Description My individual project for the Alcala West site is intended to connect the Linda Vista community with the USD campus in a way that creates a larger scale of community to the area. In my project, I have included Institutional buildings that serve for academic purposes (white) as well as two residential halls (light blue) and a campus recreational center (white) intended for USD students connected to a community recreational center for the surrounding area. Also included is a Student Union, which is intended for student organizations, multi-purpose rooms, and a bowling alley. In the heart of the site is a “Retail Plaza (red) that is focused towards a shopping and dining experience that caters to the USD community as well as the Linda Vista community. This will draw a focus towards the interior of the site, allowing for a higher density of population to accumulate and enter the site. To the far west end of the site is a market (red) that caters to the community and USD campus. To the far left of the retail plaza is intended space for apartment homes (blue) not owned by USD. It is intended to be a mixed-use building with apartment homes being located on the top floors while the lower levels are intended for retail businesses. Along with the amount of building variability within the site, I also wanted to include a fair amount of vegetation (parks, trees, green spaces) that would follow the traditional USD campus guidelines, attributing to the beautiful campus.
Assignment: Create a project proposal for Alcala Village. These materials may be taken to the community with the intent of engaging a dialogue with interested stakeholders and vetting design proposals and assessment of the area. Rhino 3D Architectural Studio 302 - The Urban Village Spring 2015
