Hotel

Professor Arthur McDonald Design and Production Collaboration with Nick LoCicero Boutique hotel designed for downtown Syracuse, NY alongside the Onondaga Creek Walk. 42 rooms sit above a public plaza, restaurant, and cafe. The guests have direct access to not only the public spaces below but can privately enjoy the panoramic view from the sixth oor lounge or roof garden above the bar. Integration with the creek walk ensures ample activity, including a bike rental at the base of the main stair. All communal spaces are open glazing while the rooms are covered with a three-phase sun control system. Syracuse, NY

Urban Market Associate Professor Steve Hardy

Exploration of a geometric grid system used to deďŹ ne two distinct spaces for an urban grocery store, retail oor and multi-shop corridor. Each design feature is a result of an underlying grid system derived from a unique site constraint located under another student project. A group of ďŹ ve individuals negotiated within two urban blocks to develop a rich pedestrian experience. This solution slips out from under a residential complex and spills onto the street corner. Five entry doors offer access from an interior plaza, allowing pedestrians to enter the outer corridor with numerous specialty shops or for a direct route into the Urban Market. Lincoln, NE

Fast Airports Visiting Critic RUR Architecture

Design and Production Collaboration with Nolan Ediger and Nick LoCicero The main focus was to experiment with manipulating plastic bottles to create a spacial system for a small, regional airport. The investigation we sought took advantage of the strong neck of the bottle. By using the inherent structure of the bottle opening, an interchangeable modular system allowed the airport to grow and change program depending on need. Inside, the user ows along a suspended pathway weaving in and out of program units that occasionally merge to form larger units.

Surface Structure Associate Professor Jangwhan Cheon

Surface pit mining scars the earth and leaves the area almost undevelopable. This quarry plummets over 300’ below the surface making any attempt to ďŹ ll impossible. This truss system offers remarkable strength and gives an opportunity to reclaim the lost land. 49,000 sq ft. of new surface area spans the opening and supports the program of a community center and art retreat. This section model was cut while the structure was left to show the span. Wells-lamson Quarry, East Barre, VT

1/4” Section Model

A 1/4” section model including tech-tonic features and a working chipboard truss spanning the 4’ base. Building such a large model proved the feasibility of constructing over the quarry. 5’x3’x2.5’

Meta-Matic Associate Professor Chris Ford

Jean Tinguely and the Auto-creative Art machines he built inspired this device to kick off 4th year Studio. The machine is designed to accept an 18” piece of piano wire, auto-feeding into three pneumatic pistons fitted with steel stamps. The three stamps simultaneously clamp onto the wire bending it into an undetermined shape. This action signifies it creates art all by itself by a turn of a switch.

Above: One stamp and its’ brackets. The curved bracket allows rotational adjustment while the handle on the right allows vertical movement. Below: Three stamps can be positioned in many different ways offer countless iterations on how the wire is bent.

Product Design Associate Professor Tom Allisma

Independent Study course researching design and aesthetics in desk furniture, including guided design through all aspects of production. All parts are carefully designed, selected, and fabricated personally. Full access to metal machining CNC’s, lathes, welders, and parts taught the full spectrum of how an idea becomes real.

*Steel was locally hot-rolled from recycled junk and used within 24 hours.
