Winter has arrived and with it an increased risk of fire. After sitting idle for the spring and summer months, chimneys can become blocked and unsafe for use. Rising energy prices mean that more people have turned to open fires and wood burners and so, before thinking
we’re able to carry on delivering the improved services that residents tell us they want such as: providing public toilets, a Town information centre, improving our civic amenities and much more, and we can now do this whilst freezing our proportion of the Council Tax, which I’m sure residents will appreciate” about settling down in front of the hearth, take a few simple steps to prevent tragedy. Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service tips include getting your chimney swept before use, using a fireguard and fitting and testing smoke alarms. CFRS recommends that for solid fuel fires chimneys are swept once a year for smokeless fuel and twice a year for coal. Be safe and turn to our classifieds section for contacts for chimney sweeps.

A commonly asked question with regards to an investment portfolio is “What is the most important element when creating a new portfolio or reviewing an existing portfolio?” The most important element is to ensure that the basics are correct. This includes (not an exhaustive list): • Is there an adequate cash reserve outside of the investment portfolio?
• Are the arrangements as tax efficient as possible? This does not just mean utilising tax free allowances such as ISAs but also ensuring personal allowances for income tax and capital gains tax are being fully utilised. • Does the investment portfolio incorporate the right level of capital protection to satisfy the investor’s attitude to investment risk?
• Are the investment funds held in keeping with the investor’s attitude to investment risk? This particular point is wide reaching. It is the total portfolio that needs considering when looking at overall risk rather than just an individual fund.
• Is there adequate diversification between asset classes and funds (i.e. not too concentrated or too diluted)? • Is income being generated in the most tax efficient manner possible? • Is there adequate access and flexibility? Only when the building blocks of one’s portfolio are correctly in place should investors be looking to drill down deeper into specific fund selection. Foodbank continues to support
This New Year why not volunteer?
Last year, over 450kgs of food were donated to Foodbank by the generous residents of Grange and the surrounding area. The Foodbank collections for Grange are organised by the Co-workers of Mother Teresa, a small group of volunteers from the Parish Church and St Charles Church.
If you’ve got a bit of spare time and would like to do something really worthwhile with it, then several of our charity shops are looking for those most valuable members of staff volunteers. Why not make 2015 the year you give it a go?

Project Manager for Barrow Foodbank, Ann Mills, told Grange Now: “People looking to foodbank for help in the Furness area rose sharply last year with 8312 people from 3274 families coming to us for help.” Ann went on to say that it is not just people on benefits who are looking to Foodbank for help, “The demographic of people being seen is changing, with far more working families who are finding it more difficult to cope when unexpected demand is made on their income. We also see a large number of people who are new benefit claimants who can wait for 6, 16 or 26 weeks before their first payment is made. Unfortunately we are unable to support people for that length of time as we are here to provide short term provision for people in food crisis. People are allowed three vouchers per crisis with each voucher providing 3 days of nutritionally balanced food. All food is provided by the

Grange volunteer, Penny Ward, sent Grange Now
these pictures of the items collected in Grange for the appeal which amounted to: 389 kg food and toiletries, 639 kg bedding and towels so a total 1028 kg to be sent to Sierra Leone. In addition, some toiletries not suitable are being sent to the women’s refuges in Kendal and Barrow. Penny told Grange Now: “This is a fantastic result - many many thanks to all who responded.” The next Foodbank collection will be on Sunday 1st March 2015. Many thanks to the volunteers who give up their time to make these things happen.

Do something amazing this year We need more first responders and committee members We were sorry to learn that Judith Newton had decided to step down as team leader at the end of October and we all wish her well in her retirement from active responding.
Chris Cousins has taken over as leader of the team and is settling well into this important role. We have two new responders in training and we look forward to them joining the team in the near future. However we still need to recruit more active responders in order to reduce the pressure on the existing team. Recruits need to be at least 18, physically fit, able to
drive and have access to a vehicle. No previous experience is necessary because full training is provided.
At the end of November we held our tenth annual meeting and in Judith’s last report as team leader we learnt that over the previous twelve months there had been 507 calls for assistance attended by the operational members of the team. This can be broken down as 284 calls attended by the Community First Responders, and 223 attended by the Enhanced Community First Responders. This is a massive increase compared to the previous year when the team

responded to 388 calls in total. Also there were 89 calls for assistance during the same period to which responders were unable to attend. This is further evidence that the team is working under great difficulty having lost some active responders over the year. Once again the Grange team is one of the busiest in the area and the responders deserve our congratulations for their continued commitment to serve our local community. We also need to recruit more people to join the committee. We must have officers and committee members in order to maintain our charitable status. It is an interesting and worthwhile voluntary job and not at all onerous. The number of defibrillators available for use by the
general public is growing. The latest one to be fitted is in the hallway at the Grange Institute in Main Street. We are grateful to the Charles Godwin Trust, the Women’s Institute and the Grange Institute committee for raising the money to pay for the life saving equipment. Parking and traffic in Grange - have your say!
In response to residents’ comments in the Community Led Plan, Grange Town Council has set up a number of special Advisory Groups to look into parking, traffic, signage, cycling and the ‘pedestrian experience’. We are consulting with a number of organisations such as the Chamber of Trade but it would be great to have some feedback from those who drive, walk or cycle in the town – you don’t have to be a resident to give feedback. Please come along to one of our Councillor Surgeries at the Library (1-3 pm on 19 Feb or 10am -12noon on 14 March) and give us your views. Ancient Woodlands
Witherslack Woodlands, established 25 years ago, sustainably manages 750 acres of the 2000 acre Witherslack estate (the forebears were awarded the Manor of Witherslack after the 15th Century Battle of Bosworth) where firewood has been cut and processed hereabouts since the Iron Age. Much of the woodland is dense ancient mixture of hardwood and softwood trees and impressive yews overlying the limestone of Yewbarrow and Whitbarrow. Witherslack Woodlands now has a team of six, led by Forestry Manager John Park, who produce in excess of 1200 T of firewood annually. A couple of hundred tonnes of coppice is used to heat six of the estate’s buildings Conservation concerns apply to several woodland species including the high brown fritillary (Argynuis adippe), the northern brown argus (Aricia artax erxes) and the pearl bordered fritillary (Boloria euphro syne) which can now be found in many places of the coppice woodland. Thirty years ago the historic coppice woods were foraged by pigs. Much of the area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, with the rides now widened and debris removed from the ground the butterflies can now access the flowers they survive on. Given the challenges of cutting down our reliance on fossil fuels, reducing emissions and combating climate change, it’s a neat example of thinking global and acting local. Using wood as

What an honour The honours system recognises people who have made achievements in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping Britain. Three of those recognised in this year’s honours list include:
Keith Buckler
Retired surgeon, Keith Buckler, has been awarded an MBE for his work with Grange Rotary, the New English Orchestra and other charities. Mr Buckler, from Sutton Coldfield, worked as a surgeon in hospitals in Bury and Rossendale before retiring to Grange 17 years ago. An active member of the church, Mr Buckler told Grange Now: “I was very surprised when I was told but I’ve been fortunate, I’ve had opportunities other people haven’t had. Others have done far more and deserve it more, but I’m obviously very pleased.”
Tiffany Hunt Tiffany Hunt has spent the greater part of her working life in the voluntary and charitable sector. She is currently involved in supporting and promoting the North West region’s natural and cultural heritage as Chair of the HLF NW Committee; Secretary of the Cumbria County History Trust; member of the Regional Heritage Centre Advisory Board, Lancaster University; Trustee of Cartmel Village Society and member of the Cartmel Priory PCC and Development Group. From 2002-10 she was Regional Director of the National Trust in the North West, a role in which she held overall responsibility for the National Trust’s activities and helped look after some of the NW’s finest countryside, coastline and historic buildings. Tiffany told Grange Now: “ I was extremely surprised, but delighted to have been awarded an MBE and very grateful to all those people I have worked with over the years who helped to make this possible”.
Chief Superintendent Jonathan Ward
Chief Superindent Jon Ward has been awarded the Queen’s Police Medal. Jon joined Merseyside Police 28 years ago and rose through the ranks to his current position as Chief Superintendent. He is the Area Commander for Liverpool City centre and surrounding area, and the lead Match Commander for games at Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs. He is also an accredited Firearms and Public Order Commander.
Jon attended Grange Primary School, Earnseat Prep School at Arnside before going on to Heversham Grammar School. From there he went to Myerscough Agricultural College for 3 years where he obtained a National Diploma in Agriculture. During that time he spent 6 months in Canada on a dairy farm. He joined the Merseyside Police Force in 1987, rising through the ranks to his current position as Chief Superintendent. Jon’s Mum and Grange resident, Penny Ward said of the award: “I would just like to say how very proud their father would have been of his two sons”

Record number of complaints
Tesco
Grange Town Council received a record number of complaints over the Christmas break about rats, ‘all over the children’s playground’ on the promenade.
Tesco has announced plans to cut 43 of its ‘unprofitable’ stores, the majority of which are expected to be local convenience stores. Tesco has also stated that they are shelving plans to build 49 new super stores. This, along with the announcement that they intend to close their staff pension scheme, saw Tesco shares rise by 9% on Thursday 1st January 2015. In respect of opening a new store on Kents Bank Road, a spokesman told Grange Now: “There is no further update on our Grange-over-Sands store at the present time and we don’t yet have an opening date. My apologies for this. When I have some further news I’ll be in touch to provide an update.”
According to residents who complained to the council, and who also contacted the Grange Now office said: “there were rats in the trees and running round all over the equipment in the playground it was horrible”. Grange Town Clerk told Grange Now: “the building works currently being undertaken at the former toilet building next to the playground have dislodged the rats. The playground has now been closed, for approximately 4 weeks (from 5th January).”

Pensioners will doubtless be delighted at the launch of the new National Savings and Investment Bonds for pensioners which are only available for people aged 65 and over. Two bonds have been launched: the first is a one year bond offering 2.8% gross/AER interest and a 3 year bond which will pay 4% gross/AER interest.

Radiotherapy unit for Kendal?
In what could be good news for cancer sufferers, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander MP, has said of the proposed unit at Westmorland General in Kendal, “I will ask University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, NHS Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching NHS Trust to conduct a joint feasibility assessment of the scheme.”

Several residents went to the Holker Hall Winter Markets - and were impressed with the fire eater and the hot chilli stands. There was also an exciting outing to the candle factory in Lindal with lunch at the factory.
During the month we had a our Residents’ Christmas Party with entertainment, good food and some early presents.
After all that, the residents had a well earned rest on Christmas Day when Father Christmas came.
We ended the month with a visit from Stephen Watson, the origami teacher.

County Matters
Cumbria Highways have informed me that they will be re-surfacing Pig Lane and part of Hampsfell Road( by the toilets) in the centre of the town on Saturday 7th February from 1300 – 2200hrs, weather permitting.
The Highways Engineer in charge of the work has arranged that the work will start from lunchtime that day to help minimise disruption to traffic in the Town. The work will be completed on that day, by working on into the evening. It will mean that the library car park will be out of commission from late morning as preparations are made for the surfacing works. Notices will be displayed at the junction of Pig Lane, Main Street and Kents Bank Road well in advance of the work
Macmillan collection. National Libraries Day is on Saturday 7th February and in the week leading up to this we will be asking readers to tell us about their favourite books. On 10th February, to mark Safer Internet Day, we will be providing advice and bookable sessions on how to safely buy online and communicate by email or social media. Storytime with Lyn or Tina will be on Wednesday 11th and 25th February at 10 am. This is open to preschool children and their carers, no need to book just come along with your little ones and join in the fun!
A Dementia Information drop in will be held on Friday 13th February from 10 am to 12 noon and a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society will be available to provide advice and guidance for diagnosed individuals and their family and friends. Grange Town Council will be holding a Councillor

The bus service around the Peninsula will be changing on Saturdays with the withdrawal of the 532 service, as from the middle of February. The X6 will be the only service operating on Saturdays. Monday to Friday services will remain the same. I will be asking our transport team to see if we can persuade them, or any other operator, to look again at our Saturday services.
Unfortunately this has occurred due to the fact that the County Council has withdrawn all rural bus subsidies. I did not support, nor voted for this, but my Labour and Lib Dem colleagues forced this through last year despite pleas from Conservative Members that this would

With the New Year underway, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are asking people to make their resolutions in 2015: to make sure that their smoke alarms are up to date,and in the right place. For people who live in a multi-storey home or a larger property a single smoke alarm is simply not enough. January has been a bit of a health dominated month. In case you haven’t heard I received a letter a couple of weeks ago from the Treasury committing to provide the £15 million needed to build a new radiotherapy unit at the Westmorland General Hospital, providing that the business case can be made. I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say this was one of the most exciting letters I have ever received.
The fight to bring cancer treatment facilities to our hospital has been a very personal one for me. I know the dreadful toll that cancer can take not just to the individuals involved but also to their family and friends. I lost my mum to ovarian cancer and my wife’s mother died from pancreatic cancer. When people are suffering from this disease it is not reasonable to ask them to make a round trip of well over 100 miles for their treatment in Preston. When you are receiving cancer treatment the
last thing you should face is a long drive back home up the M6, many people find that they stay over in Preston rather than make the effort, particularly if they are getting treatment very regularly.
Four years ago we were successful in our campaign to bring chemotherapy treatment facilities to the hospital but, as I said at the time, that was always only the first stage. The campaign could never be seen to be successful until we also had also brought radiotherapy treatment. The letter from the treasury does not promise this will happen, as with the Lakes Line and all major capital investments these days, the business case must be made. But I am fairly confident that this can be done and I will do all that I can to help in this. I think it is fair to say that we are closer to seeing radiotherapy coming to Kendal than we ever have been but we won’t be opening the champagne until the first person starts their treatment. I was also lucky enough to be called to ask a question of the
Minister at Health Questions in the House of Commons the other day. I used this opportunity to ask the Minister to re-examine the rules that determine the number of ambulances that cover rural areas without an accident and emergency unit like ours. The trouble is our ambulances have to travel out of the area they are meant to be covering a lot of the time and as a result the rules that determine how many ambulances are needed do not work. In fact we have heard from some concerned people in the North West Ambulance Service that they estimate we are about 30 ambulances short of what is needed to give us proper cover. I was really pleased that the Minister agreed with me and has committed to review these rules as soon as situation allows. The more you know, the more you see. Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) involves offenders grooming youngsters and using their power to sexually abuse them. It can take many forms, whether it occurs through a seemingly ‘consensual’ relationship with an older boyfriend, or a young person having sex in return for attention, affection, gifts, alcohol or cigarettes.

NSPCC ‘SHARE AWARE’ ONLINE CAMPAIGN The NSPCC has created a new online guide to help inform parents about the risks of different social networking sites used by children: http://www.nspcc.org.uk/ shareaware This comes after an NSPCC survey revealed that three quarters of parents surveyed found sexual, violent, or other inappropriate content. An NSPCC panel of more than 500 parents from Mumsnet reviewed 48 social networking sites and said all those aimed at adults and teenagers were too easy for children under 13 to sign-up to. On more than 40 per cent of the sites, the panel struggled to locate privacy,
reporting and safety information.
The NSPCC also asked just under 2,000 children and young people which social networking sites they used. Talking to strangers or sexual content were the main concerns mentioned by children. But they also thought the minimum age limit for signing up to many sites should be higher, despite saying they’d used the sites when they were underage. Children worried about online safety or any other problem can call the free, 24-hour helpline on 0800 1111 or get help online at www.childline.org.uk

It was Geoffrey Chaucer in 1382. Chaucer wrote the first poem, ‘Parlement of Foules’ which associated Valentine’s Day with romantic love. Prior to that, Valentine’s Day, which was celebrated on February 14th, related back to the 5th Century and was based on St Valentine who, according to some websites, is the patron saint of beekeepers and epilepsy! Chauncer’s poem, which includes the line: “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate“, which speaks of day birds (and humans) coming together to find a mate, so he may be responsible for the Valentine’s

Famous lovers throughout the years have included: Romeo and Juliet, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Posh and Becks and poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In 1845 on January 10th, Robert Browning read the then spinster, Elizabeth Barrett’s volume of poetry entitled ‘Poems’ and apparently fell instantly in love with her. Over the course of their courtship the Brownings exchanged nearly 600 letters. They married and moved to Italy to escape the wrath of Elizabeth’s father who had dictated that none of his children should ever marry. Unfortunately, I fear the age of romance is not thriving in the office of Grange Now. On asking the various staff members what they would be doing for Valentine’s Day, the writer received the following responses: “sod all”, “commercial rubbish” and “nothing”. Glenn, our wonderfully talented graphic designer did say: “I tell my wife I love her every day, not just on Valentine’s Day” - ahhh.

Grange-over-Sands Neighbourhood Plan
Vision and Objectives Vision Grange-over-Sands is proud of being an attractive, friendly, and wellmaintained place to live, work and visit. Its promenade, the superb views across Morecambe Bay, and its woods and upland areas are all particularly impressive. These contribute to the town’s distinctive character. The community’s vision is to ensure that changes and developments will be in sympathy with the town’s historical roots and natural assets. Positive support will be given to changes and projects that address sustainability and accessibility, and encourage creativity in design. This support will be through ensuring that there is an integrated approach to providing the infrastructure the town needs, as well as safeguarding the valued features of areas being developed. Using this method the distinctive elements of the town will be maintained, so that residents, businesses and visitors will be welcomed and supported.
Objectives The Neighbourhood Plan has five core objectives. They provide the framework for the detailed policies for local planning in the main body of the Neighbourhood Plan. There is the need to address the challenge of repeated flooding and to integrate the relatively high number of new houses into the existing fabric and services of the town. This will be done by: • Supporting the use of brown field sites where appropriate and possible. • Creating a design brief for new development which addresses the important issues already identified by the community in the Community Led Plan: • Affordable homes for sale and rent. • Homes that cater for the needs of every section of the community. • Conversion of redundant buildings wherever possible. • Protecting outstanding natural features. • Ensure that flood protection measure and drainage plans are appropriate for the area.
Objective 3: Transport and Accessibility The aim is to promote sustainable public transport with pedestrian and cycle routes within the town. It will involve linking new developments to the town centre.

This is the next step from the Community Led Plan which every resident of Grange had the chance to contribute to. Doing a Neighbourhood Plan will bring in a lot of money – we estimate in excess of £100,000 - for us to spend on our town. The Town Council has started the project and a Steering Group of councillors and residents has been formed. The Steering Group has considered all the opinions and views you gave to the Community Led Plan survey and created from these a Vision and Objectives for our town for the next fifteen years.
We need the residents (that’s you!) to approve this Vision and Objectives in order to go ahead. These are published on the page opposite We want to hear from everyone. If you have an elderly neighbour or know someone who is ill or too busy or for whatever reason may not respond, please tell them about this project and help and encourage them to send in their YES vote. It will only take a moment and it will make a big difference!

Island Dreams
Ann Southward - Featured artist
Every month throughout 2015 we are going to feature an artist on our Arts page. This month we are shining the spotlight on Grange artist, Ann Southward.
Ann has been painting professionally for 35 years, and she has put together a collection of her wonderful paintings for an exhibition which will be displayed in Grange library. The paintings, all in acrylics on canvas are of Scottish beaches. Ann loves the Lake District and moved from West Cumbria to Grange, with her son, 16 years ago. She studied graphic design at Liverpool University. The exhibition will run from 2nd 28th February. The Grange Now offices display a couple of Ann’s paintings permanently along with some beautiful knitted cats and a selection of blank cards with scenes from her paintings.

Christmas Concert with ‘Voce’ in Grange
An audience of over 120 people was treated to a magnificent melange of seasonal and popular songs performed in a classical style by “Voce”, the male quartet winners of “Cumbria has Talent 2013”. The charity concert was arranged by the Social Committee of St. Charles RC Parish and took place in the church on Kents Bank Road on Friday 19th December. The total raised amounted

John Graeme Livingstone, a member of Flookburgh and District Amateur Operatic Society, has written the society’s next production entitled, “Just a Little War.” The play, which will be performed for the first time this year, is a story of a young Flookburgh man, Tom Dixon, who goes from fluke fishing to the Ulverston Volunteers, and then on to enlist with the regular army. His career sees him fighting with Wellington in Spain, Portugal and finally at Waterloo, as well as following the drum to the Americas. The very talented Y6 student, Luke Atkinson, has, with the support of Y6 teacher Mr. Ross, won a National Competition promoted by Discovery Education.

The annual production at the end of 2014 was ‘The Addams Family’, featuring a touching story of a young couple from very different families and backgrounds (one very unconventional!) falling in love.
The cast and crew worked hard with a busy schedule of rehearsals to once again put on a musical of outstanding quality. Talented pupils gave excellent performances including George E as Gomez, Lucia H as Morticia, Annabelle N as Wednesday, Murray A as Uncle Fester, Chris H as Lurch, Josie G as Grandma, Nathan M as Pugsley, Saskia R as Cousin Itt, Lewis B as Lucas Beineke, and Jess W and Joe M as Mr & Mrs Beineke. The chorus was also stunning in fabulously spooky costumes. A big thank you to everyone involved for making the production a huge success. We had about 50 fabulous
young people involved in acting/ singing, backstage, technical/ making props, make-up, green room, waitressing and refreshments, hall decoration etc. It was an amazing job and I am very proud of all our young people. I would also like to thank the staff involved, the PTFA and parent helpers, the band, and the parent taxi services that allow rehearsals to take place.
There has been a lot of interest in the new Theatre Workshops which now take place after school on a Monday evening. The workshops cover acting, dancing, singing, lighting and sound, design, writing, directing and props. We hope many students taking part will go on to have roles in this year’s musical, The Sound of Music! The Addams Family Director, Mrs Ashcroft

The task was to create a seasonally themed app, or game, using the on-line Espresso Coding, free code-section. Luke beat-off the competition from across the country to win the National Award for Key Stage Two. Staff and colleagues are very proud of him for winning this prestigious award. Luke wins a ‘Learn Pad’ by Ryan Swell from Discovery Education. Year 6 children have also been working towards BikeAbility Level 2 Certificates. They led a school assembly demonstrating all important skills on the real bike and making sure
that younger children are familiar with safety instructions when riding one. Nursery children started spring term with learning about Winter and Chinese New Year. In Reception it is all about Winter as well, and children have been learning about Arctic and Antarctica followed by their own exciting winter expeditions. Year 2,3 and 4 children have started this busy spring term from learning about Anglo-Saxons and tackling some mathematical problems.A huge thank you to Sunetra and Alastair from Holker Sawmills in Cartmel for providing a fantastic learning opportunity last term, showing us all the complicated machines, and how the planks of wood, timber and logs are made. We are also looking forward to our Co-operative Learning Morning which takes place on the 4th February and is always enjoyed by children, staff and parents.
Grange Primary We started 2015 with a performance on Friday 9th January at the Victoria Hall where all children from Reception to Year 6 performed a dance routine choreographed by Lucy Everett (principal at Dance Atikk) who has been working collaboratively with teachers and children throughout the school since September. The performance gave us the opportunity to showcase our dances as this is one of the ways we have been spending our PE funding this year. The children all performed brilliantly! We are also pleased that our year 6 pupil Mia Heath came 4th in the County Cross Country which took place on Saturday 17th January at Kirkby Stephen – well done Mia! Miss Eccleston and the School Council have been very pro-active this year
and as well as having organised a toy collection and delivery to Furness General Hospital in December they have now got a Walking Bus running each Wednesday from the Health Centre in Grange to School. This coincides with the Walk on Wednesday Scheme. We hope that this will cut down on traffic congestion around the school and encourage the children to be more active generally.

There has been a very busy start to the new term. The school has been looking at a particular value for life and exploring it. Respect and peace have already been covered with discussions, thinking, peace and quiet, peace amongst our friends and peace more globally. This term we will be looking at perseverance. The Governors recently met at Rydal Hall to look at the vision of the school, and it was decided to change it to the following:
“Within our community each of our children will achieve their potential preparing them for the future through high quality teaching and learning and exciting opportunities, whilst having a
sense of belonging in a safe Christian environment”. Staff recently took part in first aid training delivered by Kentdale First Aid, and a further session was organised for members of the community. Thank you to Mrs Swift for organising both and thank you to the members of the community who helped raise £95 for first aid equipment for school. Year 5 and 6 children have completed a project about the Magna Carta as they will be contributing to the 800th anniversary celebrations. Their topic is life in World War 2 and evacuation to Allithwaite. If anyone locally would like to contribute by sharing their experiences of the War, we would be exceptionally grateful! (Please call Mr Jones or Mrs Elliott on 32144). The Christmas Fair was a huge success with the PTA raising £1516.20. Thank you very much to the PTA and all the other helpers.

St Mary’s, Allithwaite A “Messy Church” with a Christmas theme was enjoyed by about 45 children after school on December 1st and set the scene for the following Sunday’s annual Christingle Service - again with the children from “Godz Gang” (Sunday School) taking a major role. Now with Christmas festivities behind us we are looking forward to another weekend away at Lytham St Anne’s at the beginning of March and making plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the building of St Mary’s Church as well as Allithwaite School and the school house – all
St Paul’s, Grange The congregation participated in an alternative Christmas card scheme which this year raised £423 and was sent to Water Aid working in Mozambique to prevent infant mortality from unclean water. Many thanks to St Paul’s, Lindale for hosting our Patronal Festival to mark
the Conversion of St Paul on the 25th January, and for providing a wonderful lunch after the service. Bridget Padgett recently retired from the Flower Team after nearly 15 years and was presented with a bouquet by Canon Nick Ash on behalf of the congregation with grateful thanks for her work and dedication.

United Reformed Church Our Midweek Service (10.30am Thurs) and Women’s Guild (2.30pm Wed) have restarted after their break. Visitors are always welcome on these occasions. St Charles A failure in the church heating necessitated a basic Sunday Mass – no extras or inessentials – much appreciated by the congregation (and the priest!). Sadly, two deaths over the Christmas period put a damper on activities. Pat Byrne, a wellknown former District Nurse for 26 years, died on 27th December. (Postlethwaites funeral directors are to be congratulated on working a minor miracle after an unforeseen mishap could have caused a major problem. Well done, Alan). James Costello from Field Broughton died on 1st January. Now we are in the New Year, life begins to stir – the Prayer Group and other activities are slowly unwinding from the Christmas lethargy into a vestige of movement.
A 3rd death occurred when tom McHale died on 7th January.
We do live in a secular world which is often not accustomed to church traditions. So often, secular readings and music is requested. Religious music in all probability is never played at home – secular music should not be played in a religious setting. Make sure you make out what service you want at your funeral. God bless. Fr. P.

The SLDC Planning team has ‘knocked back’ the proposed development at the top of Jack Hill, Allithwaite. One of the assertions which swayed the authority was that affordable and standard houses should be mixed together, not separated as if in apartheid. Conversely, two completely independent submissions pointing out that sewage disposal in Beckside, Allithwaite was unsafe was greeted with deafening silence: This despite an explanation that the conditions for the children of Beckside were almost perfect for an ebola (or e-coli) outbreak, that is, if ‘cloudburst’ or ‘weather bomb’ conditions occur. It is hoped that SLDC will seek Public Health authority advice and hold United Utilities to their obligation to provide safe water and safe sewage before even more houses are built to further overload a manifestly overloaded sewage system above Beckside. The North of Jack Hill development should be refused for safety reasons based on its location adjoining three roads: Holme Lane, Jack Hill and Kirkhead Road (the latter not identified in the application plans) with no adequate pedestrian safety in place! And the Planning Committee only recognises for referral the problem on Jack Hill under guidance from the Planning Officers present..A very big mistake! Additionally, SLDC’s Core Strategy states a minimum of 35% of a development must be affordable. In other words: more than one in three! Unfortunately, the Core Strategy of SLDC continues to be undermined. It’s about time the Planning Committee acknowledges its continuing error and starts by correcting it in the Jack Hill/Holme Lane development and insist on 7 affordable homes being built. That is, if decided it should still go ahead despite the many expressed safety concerns about the location at the meeting on 18th December 2014 and the SLDC website. George M Imber Allithwaite

In regard to the Planning travesties which took place on the 18th December, GADAG comment: The Chair revised the Agenda, delaying two major Grange applications to the end of proceedings, and the hearing for Jack Hill (18 dwellings) started 2hrs. late. The Chair, a resident of Allithwaite, absented herself, and the Vice-Chair heard matters. Cogent objections from perhaps 25 local residents regarding drainage plans, the width & unsuitable site access from Jack Hill (a part of the Cumbria Coastal Way), affordable housing layout, potential sewage outflow causing risk at Beckside, junction revision and the lack of footways into the village. This is a main platform of the Planning Inspector’s recommendation that no further building should take place near Holme Lane until village footways are resolved, on grounds of danger. His views were ignored. After discussion, during which the Committee dwindled to only 9, there was a Proposal to ‘grant’ the application. The Vice-Chair noted that it was refused by a vote of 6:2 against, and announced “This application is refused”. But she was then advised by the Planning Officer that a Proposal to ‘Refuse’ must be sought – despite its refusal already. A proposal was seconded, but after some complex obfuscation and leading comments by the Officer to the Committee, they decided to defer their decision. A deferment implies that the Committee ‘granted’ the application; very arguable, in the teeth of their refusal. The hearing for Trickett’s Field (64 dwellings) commenced at 3.00 pm. More of this elsewhere; it was passed by 5 Councillors only! In August 2013 SLDC’s Planning Committee rejected a planning application to build 64 homes on the limestone meadow next to Grange-over-Sands playing fields. On the 18th December 2015 six (out of 17) members of SLDC’s Planning Committee attended the afternoon session where they briefly discussed a similar application to build 64 homes on the same site. They voted to approve this planning application without any discussion of significant core planning problems that had been raised by local residents who attended the meeting, including Town Councillor Joanna Greenway, who made an strong, well reasoned plea for rejection on behalf Grange-over-Sands Town Council. All these statements fell on deaf ears. The problems that residents highlighted included: • Land drainage: increased flooding at the railway underpass and Sedgwick Court, no provision for direct surface water drainage to Morecambe Bay. • Site access: two new junctions on a 1.5 km stretch of road that has 17 road junctions. • Inappropriate design for Grange-over-Sands’ Conservation Areas: including loss of iconic view of Morecambe Bay from Kents Bank Road that attracts tourists. • Adverse impact on Grange-over-Sands’ tourist economy (inadequate road system, lack of parking facilities, lack of employment opportunities, poor public transport). • Removal of 11 roadside trees covered by a Tree Preservation Order. • No current need for additional housing: over 200 homes on the market within one mile of the centre of Grange-over-Sands, plus 43 ‘affordable homes’ nearing completion at Berners and 42 homes being built at the top of Risedale Hill. The developer claimed that this development would bring much needed housing to the town and SLDC’s Planning Officers made strong recommendations that the committee should accept this planning application.
None of the six Planning Committee members asked for guidance on the ‘material considerations’ that had been raised by local residents. Councillors discussing this application did not bother to discuss major worries about drainage, increased traffic, site access problems, the loss of an iconic view of Morecambe Bay, or the impact on the town’s tourist economy. By the time this application was discussed the six planning committee members appeared to be disinterested in the proceedings and keen for the meeting to end. Local residents could not understand why they complacently accepted SLDC’s Planning Officers’ recommendations. This was an appalling planning decision that took no account the views of local people. It blatantly disregarded the importance of Grange-over-Sands’ Conservation Areas to the local economy and the significant contribution that this open space makes to the overall attractiveness of Grange-over-Sands to tourists. The planning committee on December 18th had an unusually long agenda. A road accident delayed residents registered to speak, and the length of the meeting meant that some members had to leave before the end but the committee can still operate provided it remains quorate. The planning committee is the largest of all the District Council committees. It is also a demanding one, and requires members to have undertaken training before they are able to fully participate. Full membership is 18, but the quorate level is a quarter (5 in this instance) the same as for all main council meetings. I am unable to comment on the Jack Hill application. In my role as a district councillor I am expected to fully engage with my parish council and residents with planning issues, but if I am seen to strongly support them and appear that I have already made up my mind then this precludes me from taking any part in the planning committee. The Trickett’s Field application had been considered by members earlier in the year. The principle of development on the field had been rigorously inspected during the land allocation process and concerns about loss of amenity space within the town could only have been considered if the Town Council had made a successful application to include it in a list of important open spaces during the allocation process. The issues which lacked clarity at the earlier application, had been addressed by the developer with drainage and highways issues agreed by the responsible authorities. Planning officers judged that sufficient improvements had been made to the design and layout to justify approval. The result was that the committee approved the application unanimously. The loss of the trees was a matter of concern but the detailed report from the arboricultural officer convinced members that, by removing the whole section of trees and re-planting further back, the avenue feature will actually be preserved for the future. He felt that the existing trees were at risk because of their age and condition and he was mindful that the preservation orders do not prevent highways authorities removing them at any time. For Mary Wilson, Chairman of planning, to try and blame Grange Town Council for Tricketts field getting built on is outrageous. Throughout the land allocation procedure we worked tirelessly to try and achieve the best results for Grange and despite robust and credible submissions we were brushed aside by Mary and her colleagues in the way they ruthlessly pursued the intensive over development of Grange “The way the planning meeting was held was an absolute travesty and Cllr. Mary Wilson, under the guise of ‘having to make a decision within a time frame’ engineered a planning meeting that suited her and the planning officers and meant that one of Grange's most substantial planning applications for many years was railroaded through by Mary and her planning officers instead of considering our residents. For less than 30% of a planning committee to decide an application, which was virtually identical to one for the site that was thrown out weeks ago, is a real slap in the face for Grange and shows complete contempt for our community within the planning process by Mary and her planning team. LEGAL TALK Joanne is back again with more Questions and Answers about Care fees planning Q: My mother went into a care home last year. I have been told that I have to sell her home to pay her care fees. Is that right? My parents worked hard all their lives and paid tax since they left school. A: When someone goes into care, the Local Authority assess how much they have to pay towards their fees. This depends on their income from pensions etc and also how much capital or savings they have. If they have capital over £23,250 in total (and this includes a house) they have to pay the full rate of care fees which are currently between £2-3,000 every month. I presume your mother’s savings have been used up, and the house has to be sold to meet the continuing fees. You can ask the Local Authority to defer fees and they will effectively give you an interest free loan as long as your mother is alive to avoid having to sell the house sooner than you would want to but you have to pay eventually. Q: That doesn’t seem very fair to me. My in-laws own their own home. They are fit and healthy now but could the same happen to them? A: If only one of your in-laws goes into a home, the Local Authority won’t take account of the value of the house while the other is still living in it (although they will take savings into account), but if the other then dies or needs care themselves, the value of the house will be taken into account and it may need to be sold to meet fees. Q: Can’t they just sign the house over to my husband and his brothers and get round the problem that way? A: Yes and no. If someone gives their house away with the intention of avoiding care fees, the Local Authority can treat this as ‘deprivation of capital’ and the fees of the person who has signed the house over are calculated as if they still own the house. But if the house is given away when they are in good health with no reasonable prospect of requiring care, the Local Authorities own rules make it hard for them to take the house value in to account. Making outright gifts can be risky, though. Instead of an outright gift, they would get much more protection by putting the property into a family Trust. SOCIETY ROUND-UP Christmas tree festival in St. Paul’s church This was the second festival and proved to be even more successful than the first.
36 trees representing groups and organisations in Grange were well received, and 1368 people came into church during the month long festival (855 last year which we thought was good). The chosen charity was Springfield. Before the festival, Springfield needed to carry out essential work on their building and so the church council agreed to give them £500, to name them as our chosen charity for the Christmas Tree Festival and to hope to achieve this figure in the festival. The good news was that we were able to add another £500 to the initial £500 because of the generosity of our visitors.
Many thanks go from St Paul’s to all those who entered a tree and those who contributed in so many ways, particularly by coming to see the trees.

Grange & District U3A Our December general meeting was superbly organised by Erica Clapp and comprised a WW1 theme. The music group played and sang songs from the trenches, a number of members read extracts from the diaries WW1 soldiers and the morning closed with the final poignant episode of the BBC series Blackadder. All followed by mince pies and coffee in a convivial atmosphere – an excellent precursor to the Christmas period which will come to a close with the U3A dinner at Grange Fell Club on 16 January.

The first meeting of 2015 saw members and visitors enjoy an interesting talk by David Tomlinson from Warburton’s Bakery. Although now retired, David had worked as part of the management team for many years and he gave us an excellent insight into the workings of the bakery which is now run by the 5th generation of the Warburton family. The business part of the meeting had been fairly short and included the presentation of the ‘Competition Cup’ to Mrs Ann Anderson for the 5th successive year. The next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd February at 2.00pm when the speaker is Stephen Watson who will talk to us on the ‘Art of Origami’. Grange over Sands Golf Club Last year went so fast and we are all looking forward to a good golfing year for 2015. Our Christmas party was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. Following on from that we had ‘Meet the Captains’ in early January where there was a good spread of nibbles made by our ladies and enjoyed by members. The ever popular quizzes continue every month with lots of other social events through the year. Fixture lists are now available at the club for 2015 and the Golf Open competitions are on line to be booked, there are ladies, gents and mixed events to enter. We are proud to announce that Grange Golf Club received a Silver Cardiac Smart award from NW Ambulance Service NHS Trust. 60+ employees and members have trained to use the Automated External Defibrillators now kept in the hallway of the Clubhouse making our Golf Club a safer place to work and visit by providing staff and members with Emergency life support training.
Grange Soroptimists Club members enjoyed their Christmas Party in December at Clare House with delicious food and fun. At the club meeting on 6th Jan members held a Candlelit vigil for the victims of the Peshawar shootings and to show solidarity with fellow Soroptimists in Pakistan.

Members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild had a colourful start to the New Year. Under the guidance of member Anne Covell, threads and different types of fabrics were dyed using a variety of folding and scrunching techniques. It was fascinating to see the variety of colours and shades obtained from the primary dyes colours provided. The resulting fabric and threads will surely provide inspiration for future projects. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 3rd of February when Sandra Kendall will be showing us how provide pattern on backgrounds using fabric paints and employing stamping and printing techniques. Grange Lions At Grange Lions first meeting of 2015 there was much laughter and eating of the remaining Christmas chocolate biscuits before diets are started. We had an initial discussion about our annual golf event to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston. This year the event will be held at Grange Fell golf course on the 7th August so all you keen golfers out there be sure to save the date and join us in raising money for this very important place. Further details will be announced later in the year. General financial affairs were discussed and a further payment made to support Edwin in Kenya through his University course. Two other fundraising events were planned and applications made for a collection at Booths supermarket in Ulverston in March and a street collection in Grange sometime in May. Any of our supporters wishing to help please keep an eye on the press for details.
Grange Probus On 12th January Dr Rob David gave an illustrated talk on Ice Houses and the International Trade in Ice. He began by showing photos of local ice houses which were in use during the nineteenth century. He showed how they were constructed with an entry tunnel leading to a domed chamber with a deep well-like pit to contain the ice. Next came an advertisement by Harry Mudd a grocer in Grange’s Main Street who was offering high quality ice from Wenham Lake. This lake is actually in America and was the centre of an ice exporting industry on a massive scale. They were shipping ice as far away as India and Australia. However, an enterprising Norwegian businessman named his ice factory Wenham Lake and began exporting ice to England via East Coast ports like Grimsby.

Grange Rotary The Rotary Club of Grange over Sands held a lively discussion today on how to attract new members or ‘Friends’ of Rotary. Anybody who would like to know more about the organisation can drop a line to the Membership Secretary, care of The Netherwood Hotel, where we meet. President Colin Wilkinson hosted a lunch at his home in lieu of our usual meeting and £150.00 was handed to the Treasurer for the Charity Account. All who attended enjoyed the informal get together. At the start of our new year our Speaker Secretary is working hard to get together an interesting array of speakers for meetings where guests can attend. Plans are also afoot for further social functions. The Games Night was enjoyed by all who attended and the request has been heard for ‘more of the same please’. Money raised from the Fifty Club has been distributed. Bay Search and Rescue and First Responders were sent cheques, as well as a donation to a school in Nepal.

Adrian Lines MPAGB FBPE EFIAP ARPS gave an interesting and informative digital image presentation showing how, in photoshop, images can be altered. He matched, for instance, interesting people with interesting backgrounds. After a refreshment break we had an informal discussion about his work while prints were handed round. 30 Lodge members were joined by principal guest David Grainger from Barrow who is an Assistant Provincial Grand of the Province of West Lancashire with responsibility for the Furness and South Lakeland Group of Lodges and 40 other guests. David was presented with cheques to the value of £1,150 for charitable causes and was delighted to witness such a special event. He said: “What we have witnessed today is one very proud father and a very grateful and happy son”. We then enjoyed a splendid traditional roast beef dinner provided by Higginsons. Alan is looking forward to a busy year as Master attending his own Lodge which meets monthly at Masonic Hall on Hampsfell Road and in visiting other Lodges in the Group. Newton and Field Broughton WI The meeting on January 14th was busy as there were subscriptions to be paid, numbers for the sinner on 21st to be finalised as well as the business which had to be discussed. This included a synopsis of the topics for the resolutions. Following this, a quiz took place in which all the members participated, and all thoroughly enjoyed. At the meeting on February 11th, John Park will be talking about Low Sizergh Farm. It will be held in Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.
Grange Bridge Club Our annual New Year Dinner, held on 13th January at the Netherwood Hotel was much enjoyed by everyone. Grange is a popular and friendly club with a wide range of experience and ability. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the Netherwood at 6.45pm. New members are always welcome. Grange Art Society
Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 has met continuously in Grange since it was formed in 1877, and annually in December the new Worshipful Master takes up his office in a traditional ceremony of Installation. The meeting on 12th December 2014 was unique in this Lodge because the Installation of Alan Telford was carried out by his father John Telford. The first time in over 130 years that a father had installed his son.
Members of Grange Art Society were inspired and enjoyed another oil landscape demonstration by the well known Lake Artists Society artist, Graham Twyford on 15th January. For some years now he has visited our Society to instruct and entertain members with his superb skill in revealing the process behind his successful paintings. His sessions are eagerly looked forward to. This year he virtually finished a magnificent and colourful ‘free’ view of Ennerdale, laying the darker base in acrylics and completing the painting in wonderful oil colours with exciting lighting showing a waterfall, tumbling foreground water amongst the rocks with vegetation, trees in the mid-ground and the more distant mountains. JP, from Brazil, came to the UK for a church year exchange but stayed for 10 years learning the language and attending Bible College before going to Japan as a missionary to teach Street Hip Hop dancing !
200 Club January winners
Japan is a nation that is materially well off but spiritually destitute. Hopelessness results in more than 100 Japanese committing suicide every day. Only 11% of Japanese worship the traditional gods of Shinto and Buddhism and 85% wonder why they exist. 79% when pressed to choose a religion opted for Christianity. It was a joy to hear of JP’s presenting Jesus as the answer to their needs. On February 10th we welcome Duncan Hamlett who will tell us the fascinating story of how a picture of the virgin Mary bringing up her child in poverty inspired a Scot to provide a daily school meal initially to needy Bosnian children and now to nearly one million children worldwide ensuring that they develop healthy and educated lives. The meeting is at 10.30am at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank preceded by coffee at 10am. Everyone very welcome.
Grange Lecture Society Geoff Somers returned to the Society on 13th January to give a presentation entitled ‘Borneo – Vanishing World’, which covered two years he spent in Sabah, Borneo. In it he described the country, its fauna and flora and told of the journey he made into the depths of its tropical rainforest, including a daring traverse through a previously unexplored part of the interior. For an accomplished Polar Explorer like Geoff this was a case of going from one geographical extreme to another. On 10th February Mo Holland returns to talk about Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and on 17th February TV Reporter Michael Crick’s lecture is very appropriately entitled ‘Pursuing Politicians’. Lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.
Grange Ramblers Christmas walk On December 28th. 17 Ramblers left Haverthwaite in icy conditions on a circular walk. The route lay beside the river to Low Wood, up the bridleway to High Brow Edge and past the Riding Centre to Bigland tarn where a short stop in bright sunlight was made. The group continued down steep and slippery Birk Dault and out to Roudsea. The path crossed the disused railway bridge out to the bank of the River Leven and back to Haverthwaite village and the Anglers Arms where a number of the group had lunch. A brilliant sun drenched Winter walk was enjoyed by all. The leader was Wendy Bowen.

Mothers and Others Our Chairman Joan Tyler welcomed members to the first meeting of the New Year. Although it was a cold and frosty night, members turned out and enjoyed a Silent Auction and a Jacobs Join Supper. Joan also welcomed Barbara Brown, who is the local fundraiser for Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, and she presented her with a cheque for £250. Barbara told us about the excellent work of the Hospice which supports Children and young people with life limiting conditions. They also now provide an outreach service which enables more children and their families to benefit.
Grange WI Members are looking forward to a busy 2015 with a wide range of talks and outings planned. On 26 February our speaker will be Jacqueline Cottam. She will talk about ‘School Angels’ a locally based charity set up to help schools and disadvantaged children countrywide. Future talks will cover Morecambe Bay, poetry, hands on sessions with glass and flowers and a very intriguingly titled talk ‘extra marital affair’. A full list of talks is available in the Library. Witherslack WI The January Meeting started with the Vicar, Michael Woodcock, explaining his ideas for raising money for church repairs. Idea 1. To make an audio recording of older members of the Witherslack community talking about the “olden days”. Idea 2.To set up a Geocache at the church. The WI is very willing to help. The second attempt at a group photo failed as the memory card on the camera was inadvertently wiped.! A third attempt will take place next month so please come promptly.
