A very good year This is our first full year at our Grangeover-Sands office having opened the legal department towards the end of 2017. We have had a fabulous year advising many clients on matters including shop leases, business sales, wills, probate and Lasting Powers of Attorneys. We also work closely with our Estate Agent team and have helped many clients move house.

over two years ago from Worcestershire, I understand the stress and anxiety involved. It is after all the third most stressful thing you do in your lifetime! So with 20 years of legal experience and with my practical and approachable style, I can help you with the problems you may encounter when buying or selling a house or setting up your new business and ensure a smooth transaction.

Getting involved with the local communities is important to us too, and we have taken part in the Pumpkin Walk, providing money to local charitable causes and also sponsoring Cartmel Cricket Club.

I’d like to thank all our clients and contacts for their custom, help and support throughout 2018 and may I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Oh and by the way, it is much friendlier up North!

Having moved house myself with my family

Letter from the Editor The busiest school page we have ever had appears on pages 28 and 29, in what is one of the busiest issues we have ever had. Just the time to introduce a new graphic designer - quite literally a baptism of fire at the busiest time of the year. Well done to Sharon, Sarah and Liz on producing this issue.

Two major new dramas filming locally

As Christmas approaches, there are seasonal greetings from many local businesses and groups - all to be found on pages 20 and 21. Please show them your support and shop local this Christmas. A date for the diary is Saturday 1st December for ‘Christmas in Grange’ - full details on page 5. In the following weeks of December we will be looking forward to Santa Claus paying us a visit - dates on page 20.

Deep Water based on the book by Paula Daly

The whole area made a great effort for the Remembrance day events and you can see more about that on page 25. Now the merry men and women of Sherwood Forest are getting ready to outwit the evil Sheriff, as told by the cast and crew of the annual pantomime on 7th, 8th and 9th December - more details on page 16. A fabulous time guaranteed; oh no it isn’t; oh yes it is! I hope you enjoy this jam packed issue.

Next deadline 14th December

Filming ‘The Bay’ at Grange Lido

When it airs next year, ITV’s drama ‘Deep Water’ will look very familiar. The six part drama, based on the books by Bownessbased author, Paula Daly, has been filming since August in Bowness, Staveley, Coniston and Hawkshead. The drama stars Marcella actress, Anna Friel, Sinead Keenan (Little Boy Blue) and Rosalind Eleazar (Howard’s End). Filmed even closer to home is ITV’s ‘The Bay’ penned by Daragh Carville (Being Human, Cherrybomb) who lives in Lancaster. Set to star in the forthcoming drama is Morven Christie (who you may remember from The A Word which was filmed in the Lakes). Residents were shocked to see uniformed police and police cars surrounding Grange Lido on 31st October but it soon became apparent that filming was taking place. There is no date set yet for when the drama will hit the screens but we’ll keep you posted.

there were predicted changes and reforms but in fact little changed fundamentally.

It had already been announced that

the Personal Allowance for income tax would rise to £12,500 and the higher rate threshold would rise to £50,000 from tax year 2020/21. This was

brought forward one year and will now come into force in April next year. The Capital Gains Tax exempt

allowance edged higher, as did the

Lifetime Allowance for pensions, and

the ISA allowance remains at £20,000. Overall the Budget was received

positively by the business world and did little to ‘rock the boat’ pre Brexit.

Seven Girl Guides from North West England were selected to visit the House of Lords to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Peerage Act. Sixty Girlguides shadowed sixty female peers and former Allithwaite and Cartmel Priory pupil, Jess Walmsley, was selected to attend and was appointed to be the media spokesperson for North West. Jess told Grange Now, “The House of Lords is one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever been in. Each room was unique in style and Baroness Crawley, who I was shadowing, had a different story for each whether that be meeting the King of Holland or Barack

Obama! I was taught about how women had begun to take more prestigious roles in Parliament, viewing paintings of men in top hats in the chamber and women only allowed to ‘watch’ the debate to now ladies and baronesses sitting at the forefront of politics and discussing the important issues in society. “I found a connection with Baroness Crawley as we both enjoy drama and theatre. She spoke of her teaching of the subject and we discussed how disappointing it is to see the arts sector of education being eradicated due to lack of funding. As a student, I see the unfortunate effect these budget cuts have on pupils and how it

possibly only one-quarter of those in the chamber were

women. I would love to return in 10 years and see an equal split of gender, ethnicity, and class coming together to

collaborate all experiences

and opinions to make informed judgments on matters of today. “To me, what was most

amazing was being surrounded by 60 Girl Guides all sharing the ideology of making a change for the better in

this country, all having the

confidence to speak up and let our voices be heard. We

were a community of young

women who together have the

strength, determination and will to alter the political dynamics.”

Put an end to Modern Day Slavery From 3rd to 7th December a thought provoking, informative display in the library, produced by Soroptimist International of Grange, marks the 2nd December UN International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. The display demonstrates the worrying extent and forms of Modern Day Slavery (including people trafficking) present today, worldwide and in the UK – even on our own doorstep. It aims to raise awareness of this inhuman crime and of the ways in which all of us can help combat it. Although slavery is illegal in every country right now an estimated 40-45 million people, including 13 thousand in the UK, are enslaved. They have no freedom and are treated as commodities, not people, forced to work in dangerous and humiliating conditions and subject to physical and mental abuse.

Unintentionally, we are all likely to make everyday purchases of items which have been produced by slaves. Many of the services on our own doorsteps, which we take for granted, are tainted by this practice. Who is doing our nails, washing our car, picking our fruit and vegetables? All areas where there is clear evidence of the use of slaves here in the UK. So what can we do about it? A recent national survey conducted by Soroptimist International and completed by over 9,000 people revealed limited awareness of the extent of slavery in the UK and how it can be combatted. The library display showcases what action we can all take.It contains much useful information about how we can spot the signs that someone may be enslaved. www.theclewerinitiative. org/safecarwash

A natural substance and a soft material, antique amber varies from butterscotch or egg yolk amber (opaque yellow) through to sherry or cherry amber (opaque deep red). It’s a warm, tactile and light jewellery choice, but it does take some caring for. It can be scratched or damaged by chemicals such as soap, perfume or hairspray and it should be stored carefully in a soft cloth. With some strings of amber selling for the same weight value as 22 carat gold at auction, it’s a good investment. If you’re lucky enough to own a string, wear them and enjoy them.

Grange Nativity on the Move! This Christmas local churches are putting on a Street Nativity in Grange. Travel with us on Saturday 22nd December as we act out the familiar Christmas story, with Mary and Joseph, angels and shepherds, innkeepers and wise ones, singing carols along the way.

Carol singing with Bay Community Singers

We begin at 2pm in the United Reformed Church Hall, walking through the town pausing for each scene, until we reach the manger in Main Street Car Park, and refreshments at the Commodore. Come dressed as an angel or shepherd if you wish, and be a part of the action! All the family are welcome so long as children are accompanied by an adult. Rev Jo Rand jo.rand@methodist. org.uk

On Saturday 22nd December at 10am, Bay Community Singers

will be singing Christmas Carols outside Cragdale House on

Kent’s Bank Road in Grange. Subject to approval from South

Lakeland District Council, they will

be collecting donations for Cumbria Blood Bikes. Everyone is welcome to join in or just come along and listen.

Early Christmas present from SLDC

Shoppers and traders are being given a festive boost with free parking on South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) operated pay-and-display car parks on Sunday 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd December (except Brewery Arts Centre and Kendal College). In a move designed to persuade people to hit the town centres and shop local this Christmas, SLDC Councillor Graham Vincent said: “We are delighted to be able to spread a bit of festive cheer by

supporting traders and shoppers in the district by offering free parking in our pay-and-display car parks on Sundays in the run-up to Christmas. “While this move does have cost implications for the council due to the loss of potential revenue, we feel that it is worth it to show local traders and shop owners we are behind them and hopefully increase footfall in our shopping streets.” All the pay and displays in Grange are included - Berners Close, Hampsfell Road, Kents Bank Road, Main Street and Windermere Road. Details can also be found at the SLDC website at www. southlakeland.gov.uk/carparks.

Classic Car & Bike OWners

On Boxing Day, owners of classic cars and motorbikes are being invited to share their love of their vehicles with like-minded enthusiasts at Lakeland Motor Museum’s festive edition of the everpopular ‘Drive & Ride In Day’. In previous years as many as 150 vehicles have attended throughout the day with classic cars and vintage motorcycles coming from across the north of England. Once again, a special trophy will also be awarded to the owner of the vehicle judged to be the most interesting or unique. The museum’s operations manager Chris Lowe said, “Days like the one we have planned

are absolutely perfect for both enthusiasts and the more casual admirer of classic and interesting looking vehicles. We hope our car park here at the Lakeland Motor Museum will be transformed into something very special this Christmas.” An open invitation has been issued to owners of classic cars right across the country, who are being invited to just park up at the museum’s extensive car park on the day. There’s no need to book a slot, just turn up. Indoors, the museum’s extensive collection of cars, motorbikes, and artefacts will also be on display as usual, with owners of the classic vehicles participating in the Drive and Ride-In Day event offered a discount on entry to the museum itself.

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE Daily Specials Value a la Carte Menu Resurgence of the High Street Freshly prepared & Traditional high street estate agents have been given the locally sourced commendation that they deserve. In respect to the impact Fine wines & cask beers

of online estate agents and the many hidden pitfalls and costs, news broke on how local, independent agents with their customer service focus and individually tailored sales packages are successfully holding their own.

Reacting to the news that Hatched, Connells online agency, has closed, Purple Bricks has lost significantly in the stock market slipping from an early year value of 500p to a recent low of 177.7p, and now Emoov has been put up for sale, a property expert has moved to support local and independent estate agents. Charlie Wright, who was behind Best Agent, was quoted as saying “This is good news for conventional, full service, in-person agents who have stood their ground and defended their industry. You can’t commoditise personal service. Helping people move house is a complicated, emotional gauntlet that affects people’s lives. It needs the human touch, in person, to help ordinary people through an often traumatic process at a difficult time” I couldn’t have said it better myself – so I copied it verbatim! In the end a face to face service provides significantly better support and guidance. Local staff in local offices come with huge amounts of local knowledge, best placed to fully advise you on a sale or purchase. To cement this fact even further, recently released sales figures have shown that local agents outweigh online agents significantly in the number of properties sold to since the beginning of the year with Poole November 19th December 20th Townsend leading the pack.

250 Volunteers Needed with employees who want to partake in a worthwhile service project, Churches, Youth and Community groups, schools, clubs, individuals and family groups.

Grange Rotary, with the support of the Mayor, Chamber of Trade and 26 Rotary Clubs across Cumbria and Lancashire, are proud to announce they are tackling hunger by holding an exciting Meal Pack event for the world’s hungry at Cartmel Priory School on Saturday 13 April 2019. This hands on humanitarian project involves packing 60000 nutritious meals in 2 or 4 hour shifts in a fun, “factory” setting to the accompaniment of upbeat music! Together, we are in the process of raising around £15000 to pay for the ingredients, equipment and logistics. The next step is the recruitment of up to 250 volunteers to help out generally and pack on the day. To that end this will be an ideal team building event open to volunteers from local businesses

Alongside helping to alleviate Third World hunger we are also aware that there is hunger in our own communities. For this reason volunteers will be encouraged to bring a suitable food item for distribution to local Food Banks within our district. Further Grange Rotary Charity fund raising efforts will include the proceeds to our named Rise Against Hunger Charity from the Mayor and Chamber of Trade Christmas raffle. On 25 January 2019 there is a planned Grand Charity “Night at the Musicals” concert at the Victoria Hall. How to volunteer? Details will appear in the January edition of Grange Now and on the Grange Rotary website. And don’t forget to look out for us at the Christmas Fayre Market at St Paul’s and in the Victoria Hall on Saturday 1 December for more information.

Over the time we have been cleaning, we have been asked many a time to do extra little jobs, such as trips to shops, doctors or merely just to sit and have a chat. This upgrade will cost about £7000 – the final figure is not yet in. We should be able to cover the rest from event income but further donations would be most welcome. “Looking ahead, we need to raise funds to re-finish the Hall floor. It needs sanding off and re-varnishing. We have ambitions to provide the necessary funds to purchase a set of extra radio mics and associated hardware to extend the up-graded sound system and improve the vocals at shows and lectures. We also have a dream that the Hall should own its own cinema equipment, which would be a major expense but could mean more showings as we would not have to trek up to Penrith to borrow the cinema kit. “At every event we run a raffle and raffles need prizes. We would be most grateful if folk could donate prizes, it would help on costs. “We have paid the bill for the Balcony seats refurbishment, £8096, which was mainly covered by the generous donations from residents and businesses. However, when the seats were dismantled for recovering it was found that they needed more repairs than anticipated, so the final cost was higher than the amount raised from sponsorship. This was made up from income from VHSG events.

“The large table from the Council Chamber has, in part, been converted into the new reception desk in the foyer at a modest cost of about £100. There’s plenty of good oak left to provide a sound desk at the back of the Hall for use during shows.

CHURCH NEWS

Grange Methodist Church Toast Church joined the congregation of the URC and Methodist Church on Armistice Day, and after sharing a song that Toast Church love, we joined in family time together. Rev Jo Rand was the preacher, and as we stood to remember the Armistice of 100 years before, as churches all over the country did, a trumpeter sounded the Last Post, and at the end of the two-minute silence, the Reveille.

The Well

Our monthly gathering in November, explored the theme of Disposable world - how we care for the earth, and how faith calls us to act to make a difference. We made bowls from clay with the imprint of leaves pressed into them as we remembered that all creation, including us, bears God’s image. On Saturday 15th December our theme is ‘Christmas - love it or hate it?’ If you ruled the world, would we celebrate Christmas, and if so, how? Are there songs you would ban? Would brussels sprouts be compulsory? Come and have a laugh, bring something that you love or hate about the season! We meet in Grange Methodist Church Hall at 5.30pm to share a simple meal, followed by conversation and something to do until about 7.30. All ages and viewpoints welcome. ART & MUSIC

Artist of the month Ceramic Artist Katie Plumb

I came to study ceramics at MA level after many years of sporadic dabbling with clay on a course up in Greystoke near Penrith. When the children were little we lived in Lancashire and I used to abandon them, my hubby and the dog for a day up north to ‘be me’! I didn’t have a life ambition to become a ceramicist but I had a go and fell in love. At the time I was a supply teacher and many an afternoon I would drive like a mad woman down the M6 (within the speed limit of course) after the session to arrive in school, just in time, with traces of clay in my hair and on my shoes. I would often take clay into the classroom to use with groups of children as a medium to explore to go alongside a topic they were studying. A move up to South Lakes found me working full time as a teacher in Windermere which I thoroughly

loved. However, after 10 years, I had the opportunity to take voluntary redundancy. A big think and some calculations later I handed my notice in and enrolled on the MA Ceramics course at UCLan in Preston. I had heard about the course from my sister in law who had just completed her first year – funnily enough, she is called Katie Plumb too! This December we will both don our caps and gowns as we graduate together. I wanted a new challenge and to pursue a different direction. The course offered a blend of theory and practice. I must admit, the thought of theory was rather daunting at the start as my mind was still at seven-year-old level. However, as I researched, delved, read and observed I found that I was exploring a part of me, which had lain dormant for some time. It was quite a surprise and a good one at that.

The course is geared up so that, over time, all of your arty ideas and aspirations are channeled into a more concise selection from which a more detailed study can be made. Living near the Lake District and being surrounded by the mountains and lakes veered my stimulus towards the tops of the fells and the water sources, gullies streams and rivers, which cascade from them. Following the watercourse down from the hills, along the valleys and out to the sea has provided me with plenty of inspiration. My work shows the strata and erosion, which are revealed as the water surges over the rocks in a never-ending cycle. The finale of the MA was to hold an exhibition of my work alongside my peers. The four weeks leading up to

the show were quite frantic, to say the least! I had multiple disasters in the kiln with pieces that I’d worked on for ages exploding or cracking under the intense heat. Right up to the wire, everything was in place. The doors opened to the general public and the whole exhibition was a great success. Indeed, I managed to sell some work and take a commission. As I look to the future, I aim to continue sculpting and creating under the theme of erosion and am in the process of applying to various exhibitions and trade shows including Earth and Fire at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire next summer. If you would like to see any of my work please take a look at my website: www.katieplumbceramics.com

Organisers said, “Because we are a small space the idea of the ‘Small Picture Show’ gives us the opportunity to bring a diverse selection of pieces by some of Cumbria’s finest. The gallery walls have the work of thirteen such artists: Christine Baines, Tina Balmer, Kate Bentley, Daniel Cooper, Lesley Edmondson, Judy Evans, Christine Leadbetter, Clyde Olliver, Laura Pendlebury, Sally Toms, Steve Trevillion, Beverley White, and Judith Wood. Jane Pape wins Millenium competition

Jane Pape was the winner of Grange & District Art Society’s annual Millennium Competition. The topic of animals at play inspired Jane to feature boxing hares and a unicorn in a mystic woodland scene. Organisers told Grange Now that the competition was a close-run thing with three paintings tied for first place forcing a second round of voting to produce the ultimate winner.

ART & MUSIC

California Suite

On Friday 2nd November, I was fortunate enough to attend the final night of Grange Drama’s production of California Suite.

The legend of Robin Hood has stood the test of time!

Good overcoming evil is nearly always a pantomime theme, but this year’s show, with our daring hero Robin Hood outwitting the evil Sheriff and rescuing the Babes, is told by the youngsters of Grange and District Amateur Operatic Society with such enthusiasm, that you can almost hear the swish of the arrows as they hit the targets on stage! Fun, laughter, and audience participation, the youngsters bring it all for your enjoyment. The amazing scenery provided by Helen Lawler, beautiful period costumes from Hilary Stubbs, swords, dynamite, bows ‘n arrows, castle towers, props by Sarah and Steve Shires. Strong,

efficient stage crew is headed up by Stage Manager Jim Robson and quality sound and lighting by their expert Bob Somerset and his young team. The production team of Jean and Mick Malkin, Ann Heap and Gillian Darrington wish to thank all their helpers and sponsors who generously support our local pantomime each year: Dianne and Ian Sissons, Dorothy from the Hazelmere cafe/bakery, Rodney from Johnston’s Jewellers, Stuart from Higginson’s butchers and Grange Lions. You can see this wonderful production at Victoria Hall on Friday 7th December at 7.30pm or on Saturday 8th or Sunday 9th at the 2.30pm matinee (which includes a visit from the ‘man’ himself Father Christmas). To avoid disappointment get your tickets early from Grange Information Centre, either in person or by telephoning 015395 34026.

Grange-over-Sands Rotary

proudly presents

a night at the musicals musicals

Friday, 25th January at 7.30 at the Victoria Hall

The 1978 play, written by the late Neil Simon, epitomises the playwright’s ability to see straight to the heart of human emotions; one minute you’re splitting your sides laughing and the next you’re stopped short by the poignancy of what’s just unfolded. The production was excellent with professional, polished performances all round. As always, even with a very strong cast, there were standout performances. It’s only the second time I have seen Howard St Quinton (the first was his portrayal of Tristram in Taking Steps) and he was equally as wonderful in this. What a talent. His believable performance and comic timing meant his part was played with great humour and never descended into farce. Howard’s stage wife Millie was excellently portrayed by Deborah Powell who put in a powerful performance as the wronged wife. This particular play had you in stitches right up to the part when Millie takes a call from the children and the raw emotion of what she has lost stops you short. Sheelagh O’Brien and Andy Dobel, were extremely well cast as Diana Nichols, a fading British actress and Sidney Nichols, her once-discreet gay husband who finds his discretion very much lacking in later years. Sheelagh gave a very emotional performance as the Oscar hopeful who returns to Suite 203 in the early hours, full of drink and venom. Her kind words to her husband on leaving for the show are replaced with vile and aggressive insults coupled with a desperate plea for love and reassurance. Andy played the part of the long-suffering husband very well, portraying beautifully his disguised annoyance at his wife’s behaviour along with a need to be true to himself. He is bemused

and frustrated by his wife’s fluctuating moods and emotions. As with the first playlet in which Kat Arbuckle portrayed an irrepressible and self-assured workaholic who dismisses her daughter’s desire to be with her father as little more than a teenage tantrum only to reveal at the end how deeply hurt and vulnerable she feels by her daughter’s rejection and her own fear of being alone. Mark Payne, who has come back into acting after a long break, delivered the line that many of us can relate to when he, the infrequent father, said: “If it doesn’t work out I’ll send her straight back!”. The final playlet was laughs all the way. Grange Drama veteran, Jim Robson and relative newcomer, Alastair Rae played off each other to great comic effect. ‘Best friends’ Mort Hollender and his wife Beth (Jim Robson and Sue Almond) decide to go on with Stu Franklyn and wife Gert (Alastair Rae and Pam Downs). After three weeks together it all goes sadly wrong and accusations and recriminations abound along with the odd tennis racket! Great fun and a great end. The set was beautifully done, thanks to Daniel Irving and great sound and lighting, as ever, from Bob Somerset. Indeed, the whole production was incredibly professional and I include the backstage helpers and the front of house volunteers in that. There was certainly nothing amateur about this production and I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The production was brought together under the direction of the very talented Carol Williamson, and it is be hoped that we can tempt her back across the county border again soon. I was delighted to see the Company perform to a packed house and I hope we will be welcoming everyone back again soon. Well done to all involved - a very slick performance.

Sir Cliff comes to Cartmel Races

Following the popularity of previous live music concerts including Boyzone, Tom Jones, and Simply Red, Cartmel Racecourse are excited to welcome the UK’s most successful hitmaker, Cliff Richard to their race meeting on Friday 28th June 2019. In 60 years, Cliff Richard has recorded almost 1,300 song titles, composed 100 songs, achieved 14 number one singles and seven number one albums. Able to change with the times and tastes and remaining hugely popular with fans, Cliff has nonetheless stayed faithful to his rock and roll roots throughout. Continuing to draw huge crowds to his concerts, Cliff regularly reaches the top ten with his albums; not bad for someone who critics thought wouldn’t last way back in 1958! Steve Cooper, Managing Director at Cartmel Racecourse, said “We are thrilled that as a worldrenowned artist, Cliff would select Cartmel as one of only three outdoor tour venues to play in 2019. As someone who always entertains the crowds with great energy and passion, we are already looking forward to what is set to be a day to remember”. Tickets on sale now www.cartmelracecourse.co.uk

A Christmas Classic Flookburgh Band

People have their own traditions around Christmas time but one which is a firm favourite with many around here is Flookburgh Band’s traditional Christmas concert. The event always plays to a packed Victoria Hall and Musical Director, John Iveson, manages to present the perfect blend of quality brass band music and ever-popular Christmas favourites. It’s the perfect opportunity for everyone to join in and sing some carols.

This year’s concert will take place in the Vic on Saturday, December 15 and tickets are likely to sell out very quickly. The concert starts at 7pm and tickets, priced at £10 for adults (accompanied children go free) are available from: Grange Information Office; Cockles in Flookburgh; or by booking online at: www.trybooking.co.uk. Another opportunity to get together and sing carols with the band is

on Christmas Day itself. Everyone gathers on Flookburgh Square

at 11.30am and the event has, in recent years, has attracted large crowds for some pre-Christmas

dinner carols - go along and join in the fun. Everyone’s welcome.

Cartmel Choral Society autumn concert

This year Cartmel Choral are performing the St. Cecilia Mass to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer Charles Gounod who was born in 1818. Gounod`s fame dates from 1854, the year in which he composed the St. Cecilia Mass. It was first performed on November 22nd (St Cecilia’s Day) the following year and made a deep impression.

The society will also perform extracts from Handel’s Messiah and, as it will be the time of year, we will perform some traditional carols as well as carols for all to sing.

The Society told Grange Now, “We are enlisting the help of: Dorothy Baxter (soprano), Peter Smith (tenor), Ron Eadington (bass) and, of course, the ever-popular Andy Plowman playing the organ.

The concert will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday 15th December in Cartmel Priory. Tickets are £10 (students and children free) and the price includes refreshments at the interval.

Josie gets on her bike

Josie Anderson from Cartmel, who has just celebrated her 11th birthday, took up Matt Baker’s Rickshaw Challenge to raise money for Children in Need. This is unusual in the fact that Josie, who was recently diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, has never cycled before. Josie’s Grandma told Grange Now, “I was watching The One Show and I heard Matt Baker talk about his Rickshaw Challenge and he said ‘if you can’t join us, get out on your own.’ This is when I had the idea about Josie. Her Grandad, Percy Unsworth, had been a keen cyclist and had an exercise bike in the garage. He passed away in June, sadly, from Motor Neurone Disease and Josie, who can’t ride a conventional bike, has been using the bike”. At the time of going to print Josie is in the Top 5 fundraisers for this challenge with nearly £1700 raised so far. You can donate to Josie’s fund until the end of January at: rickshaw.bbcchildreninneed. co.uk. Very well done, Josie, what a fantastic achievement.

New playground is moving in the right direction

Councillor, Tracey Hathorn, told Grange Now that things are moving in the right direction in respect of the new playground at Yew Tree Playing Fields in Grange. Tracey said, “We got a grant from Walney Wind Farm which means we can now go ahead and put the work out to tender. We are hoping work will start in the New Year and the park will be in for Easter - fingers crossed!”. This year’s Pumpkin Walk raised a massive £2029 and this will go towards the playground. Tracey, who organises the event said, “Raising such a fantastic total was mainly due to the fantastic help from Co-Op, the young people that helped with the collecting over both nights, Clare House Hotel and The Keg & Kitchen. A huge thank you to everyone.”

County Matters

As Christmas approaches I know we are thinking more about our families and loved ones who are not able to join us at this time for one reason or another. I have a daughter who lives in the USA and we will not see her this time so our thoughts are with her. Closer to home I am sure you may be aware of someone who may be alone this Christmas so please if you can give them a helping hand. Everyone will be aware that Windermere Road in Town has flooded several times in the last few years and each time homes and businesses are deeply affected. The strain on people affected is significant and the clean-up operations are becoming increasingly difficult. With

each heavy rainfall that occurs the risk of flood increases and with the current forecast for significant rainfall in the next few months, the area needs a rapid response. Our Flood and Highways teams have been working to assess what interventions can be immediately put in place to alleviate future flooding in this particular area. Together with our partners, EA and SLDC, they believe a measure of alleviation may be found and implemented as soon as possible. This will require various measures including placing cameras down culverts to target the issue, creating traffic ‘build-outs’ and diverting the water. A £20,000 fund will be set aside and held by County Council Local Committee for this work which will enable the urgent response. The long-term flood alleviation projects which include upstream

works, alterations to the SLDC car park and extra culvert into the Ornamental Gardens were presented to residents at Multi-Agency meeting held on 1st November. This included representatives from the Environment Agency, County and District Councils plus the Forestry Commission. A follow-up meeting in January next year will take place to keep residents up to date on progress. I hope to see you all on Saturday 1st December at the Christmas tree lighting by the Ornamental Gardens in the Town. This is always a major event in our Town and I must thank all the committee members for all their hard work in making this such a success every year. Have a happy and enjoyable Christmas. Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Grange Councillor’s December Surgery

Councillors from both Grange Town Council and South Lakeland District Council will be holding a Surgery at 10.00 am to 12.00 noon on Saturday 8th December in Grange Library. Please go along raise any issues you may have.

On Sunday 11 November 2018, people from all over the country turned out to remember those who died in both World Wars. A great deal of preparation went into putting on a fitting event to celebrate 100 years since the end of World War One.

remembering the fallen

Left to Right, Adrian Turner, Diane Turner, Dr. John Culling, Thomas Wilson.

Over 450 people attended the Civic Remembrance Service in St Paul’s in Grange. Over 1200 poppies, knitted by an army of volunteers, looked magnificent on display as did the centrepiece made by Grange WI under the guidance of Janet Ferguson. A horse, on loan from Myerscough College, stood proudly in the foyer of Victoria Hall covered with a blanket of purple poppies to represent all the horses and mules lost during battle. Flookburgh Band led the Parade for the Centenary Act of Remembrance from the Church of St Paul to the War Memorial at the Ornamental Gardens. There have always been family ties in the Band since it was formed in 1909. Today, two current members, Adrian Turner, and Thomas Wilson are Great Grandsons of two founder members, Thomas Shaw and Thomas Wilson. Adrian and Thomas were joined with Diane Turner and Dr. John Culling to sound the ‘Last Post and Reveille’. Many of the Bands’ Cornet players attend the 11.00 services for the local Churches each year.

Remembrance at St Peter’s, Field Broughton

Those attending our Remembrance Service were invited to bring mementos of special people they would like to have included in our prayers.

Many of our congregation added items to our display. The barbed wire and poppies evoked both the horror of war and work done by the British Legion to alleviate suffering and promote peace. It was a poignant focal point for our thoughts. Having gathered information so that we knew so much more this year about the men named on our war memorial, it was thought appropriate that our service should begin with reflections on the selection and burial of the Unknown Warrior on 11th November 1920. info@grangenow.co.uk

NATURE & GARDENING

Plot

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

The short days of December can hamper the possibilities, as well as the desire, to get out and about, the idea of getting to your allotment before work is unappealing and the thought of going afterwards even more so (gardening with a head torch is no fun!) You should still aim to get there once a week just to keep an eye on things and harvest Brussel sprouts or cabbages. If possible, it’s worth checking it after any high winds or stormy weather. If a window pops out of a greenhouse you need to replace it or certainly plug the hole as soon as you can as once the wind gets inside you maybe can can pop out the other panes easily leaving you with a very expensive repair job if they are glass or hunting polycarbonate sheets o’er hill and dale. Fortunately it’s an ideal time to

Red squirrel conservationists welcome success stats One of the biggest citizen science efforts in mammal conservation in the UK has shown red squirrel populations across northern England are stable. This is thanks to over 30 community red squirrel groups which work tirelessly to protect the red squirrels on their doorstep. One hundred and sixty people, mostly volunteers, completed the annual monitoring programme this spring. This is the seventh consecutive year of the monitoring programme, led by Red Squirrels Northern England, a project managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust, which creates an exciting picture of our native red squirrels’ geographical range in northern England. Trevor Cooper from Grasmere Red Squirrel Group said: “Repeating these surveys, same time, same place, shows that year after year reds are still present in our woodlands

We would like to thank John Random Love for sending us his allotment tips and tricks every month. Always interesting, always useful and always very funny. Cheers John.

build and repair new structures. If you get a bright clear day a satisfying job is to clean the greenhouse or cold frame as you really get to see the benefi. You don’t realise just how mucky they will have become until you clean the first pane of glass; you can use a mop or wet brush on the roof if you don’t fancy wobbling around on a ladder. For freestanding poly tunnels a good way to clean the outside is to get some old netting and a bit of soapy water, gather it together into a long sausage and throw one end over to a friend/partner/ passer by on the other side then do a ‘to me, to you’ action and pull it back and forth between you. The netting should be just abrasive enough to remove any muck and leave the tunnel intact. If the weather takes a turn for the worse you could spend time indoors planning for next year or cleaning up and fixing your tools, some even recommend planting tomato seeds this month! It’s also a great time for writing out your Christmas list, woolly socks and new wellies always come in handy.

Brown Robin - highlights from 2018

Winter is upon us once more, and I look forward to the first Hawfinch of this season. At first light I am seeing very large flocks of Starlings leaving their amazingly large roosts to forage in the fields. Their murmurations are a sight to see and Leighton Moss is always a good place to observe these spectacular displays. Looking back over 2018, it has been a great year for insects, although a short season. We had excellent numbers of chimney sweeper moths and large skippers, as well as a new record of small heath and a couple of seldom see small copper and wall brown.

We made good progress in removing more scrub to open up areas for wild flora. There were new records for me too, such as white letter and purple hairstreak butterflies, a good view of osprey fishing just off the prom and a goshawk earlier on. We have had some large skeins of geese over the reserve this autumn and as I write this there are lots of goldcrest passing through our brew area as swirls of redwing shrill overhead.

It will be interesting to see what winter brings this year. There are already waxwing on the East coast and brambling locally so it’s always worth keeping a look out on your feeders and in berry-bearing trees and shrubs. That’s the beauty of our unpredictable seasons, we never know what to expect and anything can turn up. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks the volunteers who give up their time to help out with vital work on the reserve. I would also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tony, Hon. Res. Manager at Brown Robin We would like to thank Tony for taking the time to write an article for us every month. It’s always interesting and informative and we very much appreciate it.

Winter warmers at Fell Foot

Wrap up warm and be outdoors, is the message from the National Trust team at Fell Foot near Newby Bridge. Being outside in nature can have a whole host of health benefits. “It can be easier to stay indoors in the chillier, darker months of the year, but it’s really important to get out,” said Emily Taylor, the Trust’s Senior Visitor Experience Officer. For the first time, Fell Foot has a winter café, away from the lake shore and on high ground to escape the annual floods, and visitors can get piping hot drinks, soup, jacket potatoes, and one pot meals. Dogs are welcome at Fell Foot which is open every day except Christmas day. SCHOOL REPORT

Scouts commemorate the fallen

Cartmel Priory pupils reflect on their trip to the battlefields 5:30am - Wednesday and we were on our way to Langemark in Belgium arriving in time for a late dinner.

At 10 am on 10th November, 1st Grange and Cartmel Scout Group commemorated 100 years since Armistice. Thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, Remembered and Youth United Foundation’s There But Not There project, we were awarded 10 Tommy Silhouettes to use in remembrance. So we chose to do so in a typical scouting way - outdoors. Scout Leaders, Explorer Scouts, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, parents, grandparents, and three dogs walked together in remembrance. We chose to walk up Hampsfell to the Cairn, which gives panoramic views of Morecambe Bay; a fitting tribute to the fallen. The young people carried the Tommies. It was in this beautiful spot that we held a short commemorative service for the fallen. We also reflected on the bravery of Scouts who had lost their lives in WW1. The cairn was decorated with poppies made by the Cubs and Beavers and around the necks of the Tommies, we hung tags bearing the names of those our families had lost. The service ended after a minute’s silence; the poppies and Tommies were collected and we walked together downhill.

Lindale School and Pre-school

Both Lindale School and the Pre-school are celebrating recent very successful Ofsted inspections. HMI Steve Bentham, said the Primary School was going from ‘strength to Felt poppies made by Year 5 and 6 strength’. He reported on the engaging curriculum that captures pupil’s imagination and also found that pupils brim with enthusiasm when talking about their work. He also commented on the caring and nurturing ethos that places pupils at the heart of the school. Early Years Inspector Carys Millican, found that the children play in a highly stimulating and interesting learning environment and that staff provides a wide range of learning opportunities that excite the natural curiosity of young minds. She also commented on the experienced and dedicated staff team and the close working relationship with parents. We celebrated Children In Need; dressing up and holding a cake stall to raise money. We are busy rehearsing for our Christmas pantomime ‘Robin Hood’ which involves the whole school. We are also enjoying a new online multiplication game ‘Times table Rockstar’ that has been kindly paid for by Friends of Lindale. Pre-school’s weekly woodland walks are going really well - thanks to the wet play suits kindly donated to us. We are working on managed risk and encouraging the children to think about keeping safe whilst out in the woods. We encourage them to think where they are putting their feet - really getting them to think for themselves.

Thursday, we set off for Ypres and the Flanders Field Museum, which gave us an insight into the events around Ypres during WWI. We then visited Ypres Reservoir Cemetery which was lovely, peaceful and clean, but it was upsetting how many graves there were. It put into context how many people lost their lives. We left Ypres for Hill 62 (Sanctuary Wood) exploring the museum and the British trenches, then travelling to the preserved German trenches at Bayernwald. These were areas of intense fighting and heavy losses during the war and are important memorial sites. Friday we set off as the sun

Following this, we went to Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, then the Thiepval Memorial commemorating more than 72,000 men who died in the Somme sector with no known grave. Then we travelled to Arras, visiting the Wellington Quarries where the New Zealand Tunnelling Company dug 12 miles of tunnels housing 20,000 soldiers prior to the 1917 Arras offensive. Finally, we made a short stop at the Canadian Monument on Vimy Ridge. The theme for Saturday was loss, sacrifice and remembrance. Our first visit was to Langemark German cemetery. Grey gravestones and a covering of tall oak trees made for a very sombre atmosphere, a stark contrast to the Allied cemeteries with their white headstones and open aspects. After Langemark, we visited the year, we were joined by residents from Bridge House, and after our service Class 3 learned a lot from hearing about their experiences of World War II. largest allied cemetery, Tyne Cot in Passchendaele, which has a memorial wall naming 35,000 soldiers of the British and New Zealand forces who have no known grave. We also visited Essex Farm Cemetery and then Poperinge cells and shooting post where several soldiers were executed by the Allies. Finally, we attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. The sheer size and number of names on this memorial was horrifying. We took time to visit the names of two soldiers who lived in the Cartmel area and to lay a wreath on behalf of the school. Sunday was our final day, the journey home giving us time to reflect on a wonderful but very moving trip. Rebecca C, Libby E, Jakob E-M, Martha R and Pearl S

Everyone was delighted to be part of the Armistice Service of Remembrance on 11th November. The children created a special banner with the image of a poppy from their designs and the help of Emma Wheatcroft who worked with the 7-11 year olds. Herdwick wool was used to represent the local area. The banner was proudly carried into church and to the memorial by School Councillors and House Captains. A range of work, with contributions from nursery aged pupils to those in Y6 was displayed by the school staff in St. Paul’s Church for all to see, and the school choir sang ‘Let there be peace on earth’ with Lydia Scales conducting. SCHOOL REPORT

Windermere School

Allithwaite Primary

In Snowy Owls, we have been enjoying the great outdoors, learning all about nocturnal animals, learning number facts of numbers over 20 as well as number bonds and doubling.

Windermere School student and Grange Now deliverer, Alice Thomas and classmate, Isabella Scowcroft, put their entrepreneurial skills to the test recently, selling muffins at Holker Hall’s Winter Market. Both students are keen bakers and enjoyed a fair degree of success in the Tenner Challenge, which took place earlier this year. Spurred on by this success, Alice and Isabella applied for a stall at the Holker Winter Market with their company, ‘A Piece of Cake’. Their application was approved and the girls set about planning budgets, pricing and flavours. With help from the school, the girls baked 900 muffins, all of which were sold over the course of the three days’ trading. They also raised about £500 for the Swallows Trust Head and Neck Cancer Support Group (www.theswallows.org.uk).

Acorn Montessori

In the past month the children have been tidying up the garden and planting bulbs for the Spring. They learnt a song about a pumpkin during orange week that also focussed on 2D shapes and corresponded with the shapes on the face of their own pumpkin. After Halloween, they helped make the pumpkin into delicious soup. A large bonfire picture and their own firework pictures offered a great opportunity for creativity with glitter! Our angel for the Angel Festival at Priory is progressing well and the children will be making special angel lanterns for the procession on Friday 30th November. A trip to Cartmel Priory School for their tremendous production of ‘The Greatest Show’ was much enjoyed. With Christmas only a few weeks away, learning Christmas songs for their Nativity Play has begun. The festive season is always a fun time for the children.

Grange Pre-school

We have been having a great time getting involved in sensory activities - some of the smells produced some funny reactions.

To finish our round of Golden Anniversary celebrations, we are following Santa with Grange Lions on Tuesday 11th December leaving Grange Primary School at 6pm and selling tickets for a Christmas Hamper to be drawn Wednesday 19th December. We would like to thank all the local businesses who donated prizes and everyone who has helped us celebrate so far. We give special thanks to Auriol Benson (a Chairperson from the very early days) who filled us in on some of the missing details from our history, including the fact that it was a Mrs Wendy Brown who was the kind lady who offered a playroom to start it all off!

Since the beginning of the new term, we have been writing everyday and we have all started our reading journey which is very exciting! We have also enjoyed our Wellie Wednesdays where we have been taking part in forest school activities as well as taking our maths, phonics and literacy lessons outside! We are learning how to keep safe around a camp fire. We are pleased to announce our EYFS results are well above Cumbria and the

Cartmel CE Primary

Children at Cartmel CE Primary School are enjoying an exciting and busy run-up to Christmas with a host of festive activities. As well as a trip to the Peter Pan pantomime at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and a Christmas Jumper Day, the whole school will be taking part in a special performance of the Nativity in the beautiful Cartmel Priory at 6pm on Tuesday 11 December. All welcome!

National Average. The REAL Pudsey bear visited school, the children were very excited and raised a generous amount. We would also like to thank Lakeland who’s donation has enabled us to purchase two ovens, two hobs and 10 safety knives, the bake off has begun! The children baked the cakes before selling at break times and after school, a wonderful whole school effort. As we look forward to celebrating Christmas, children have been thinking of others less fortunate. The School Council organised a bring and buy and cake sale to raise money for Children in Need, some pupils filled donated gifts for the Boxes of Hope Shoebox Appeal, and classes discussed Remembrance Sunday and the 100th anniversary of the World War One Armistice. Children have also been getting out and about on various school trips. Class

The Barn Owls had a visit from Hannah Barnes of lovemybeach.org. The children looked carefully at the different types of plastic pollution found on our beaches. In Eagle Owls, the children have been hot seating a soldier from the war and Tawny Owls have had a fascinating trip to the Fire station and the dentist. See our Facebook page!

2 and Class 3 visited the Vindolanda Roman Army Museum in Northumberland and the Dock Museum in Barrow respectively, either side of a trip to see the Priory school’s excellent performance of The Greatest Showman. We have also enjoyed a visit from a poet organised by the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere.

Flookburgh CofE Primary

We’ve had such a busy month at Flookburgh, it is hard to know where to begin! To help them to appreciate the British Value ‘The Rule of Law’, all of our Key Stage 2 children have enjoyed a trip to Preston Crown Court to learn about how trials are undertaken. Through role play, one of our children was put on trial for cyberbullying; thankfully she convinced our judge of her innocence after facing a tough grilling from some of our budding barristers! Our children are very dedicated to making our school an exciting place to be, as evidenced by the organisational skills shown by our older children in putting together a ‘Keep Calm and Dance’ disco for their peers. Everyone had a great time (even the teachers!). We have also worked together

as a school to prepare crafts and wares to sell at our annual Children in Need Fair; this year we managed to raise over £300 so thank you to all those who donated and helped to make our event such a success!

Key stage 2 children learning about the Rule of Law at Preston Crown Court.

Class 2 are excited to be starting to learn French and we have been privileged to be joined by Jenni McConnell each week for our Gardening Club. She has been teaching us how to turn our plastic waste into something useful.

FOOD & DRINK

Gourmet Grange

Christmas Chutney

In association with Higginsons Butchers

Preserving is the original ‘waste not, want not’ approach to cooking and a great technique for extracting all of the goodness from seasonal gluts of fruit and vegetables in order to create something new. The kitchen team at Low Sizergh Barn have been busy making Christmas chutney using apples from the orchard and from our Crop for the Shop initiative, where we use surplus produce brought to us by local home and allotment growers. This hearty, bold chutney makes a great gift (it even improves with age). It’s also a good option to make as part of your festive preparations as it is a perfect match for Christmas cheeses and cold meats. Makes 4 x 500g jars INGREDIENTS

1kg cooking apples 500g eating apples 450g sliced onions 50g root ginger

1tsp peppercorns 500g granulated sugar 250ml cider vinegar 500g cranberries

METHOD

Place all the ingredients except the cranberries in a large heavybased pan. Gently heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year that celebrates all the good things in life – good food, good times with family and friends and a good rest from work or familiar routine. Planning for Christmas and all that it brings starts weeks before for many of us with gifts to buy, homes to decorate and food to prepare. All this extra preparation can leave even the most organised individual stressed-out. To combat this, we believe the key is finding ways to make life simpler and not to feel guilty about doing so, particularly when it comes to that most special and wonderful Christmas Meal. For 35 years, we have been providing our customers with everything they need to create the most memorable feasts throughout the festive season. From our range of carefully sourced festive poultry and hand-made showstoppers, we have something to suit every appetite but also something to suit every cook to ensure that the person doing the cooking is confident and calm on Christmas day. To assist, we supply free pop-up timers with all our birds and joints (that tell you when they’re cooked) and our helpful staff will be on hand with cooking tips when you collect your order. If you’d like some advice on what to order or what quantities you

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for about 50 minutes, stirring regularly until the apples and onions are tender and the mix has thickened with no juice remaining. Add the cranberries, then cook for a further 10 minutes or so until softened but not burst. Fill warm sterilised jars with the mixture and seal.

0800 032 3030 cumberland.co.uk Your mortgage is secured on your home. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Carpets are the filters for our homes They trap the dust and other airborne allergens that would otherwise be floating around in the air we breathe.

Whilst regular vacuuming of our carpets removes most of these allergens from the surface, over time, some of this stuff gets deep rooted within the pile of the carpet and only a professional deep clean will get rid of it.

For a cleaner and healthier home, make it a point to regularly have your carpets and rugs deep cleaned. While it’s a chore to do it yourself, deep cleaning of your carpets is something that should never be neglected.

For best results, you can always seek help from a professional carpet cleaning company like Revive Carpet Cleaning. We make thorough carpet cleaning fast and easy at very reasonable prices. Carpets are usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning and we move your furniture too.

We also clean upholstery, including leather.

The photos show an example of what we can achieve, the first one was taken part way through the clean to show the difference as the job progressed, the second, the final result. We hope you agree that there is an amazing improvement.

Grange Lecture Society

This season’s Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture will be given on 4th December by distinguished mountaineer Alan Hinkes, replacing Paul Ross who is indisposed. Alan looks back on a career in which he was the first Briton to climb all the world’s peaks over 8000 metres. The lecture begins at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Meanwhile there are three lectures on which to report. On 9th October Stefa McManners told the story of Kynren, the spectacular open-air show featuring 2000 years of English history staged annually by local volunteers outside Bishop Auckland Castle. Then on 23rd October in a well illustrated presentation Martin Withers, who piloted the famous Vulcan bomber raid on the Falklands, described with engaging modesty

and humour the hazardous 8000 mile return journey involved, including the tricky procedure of aerial refuelling from Victor tankers en route, and the successful strike on Port Stanley’s runway. Finally on 6th November photographer John MacFarlane in ‘The 1868 Abyssinian Military Expedition’ vividly recalled a journey he made following the route taken by British forces in 1868 to rescue the British Consul imprisoned in a mountain fortress at Magdala. John illustrated his narrative by deftly interspersing photographs taken on his own journey with original photographs and drawings from the 1868 expedition.

On Friday 7th December members and friends will be attending a Christmas Lunch at the Cumbria Grand Hotel.

Mothers & Others

23rd October - Our speaker was Geraldine Braithwaite, a very ardent supporter of the Brooke Hospital for animals. Tis charity is concerned for the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules around the world. A slide show accompanied by a detailed talk was enjoyed by all. Gifts of Christmas cards, brooches, pencils, and shopping bags were purchased by members who were pleased to help this good cause.

At the October meeting Rachael Hoggarth from Barrow Women’s Centre spoke about the excellent projects going on including sessions for teenage girls. A massive number of sanitary items were donated to Rachael to combat Period Poverty and those unable to afford sanitary products will benefit.

6th November - Our speaker was Margaret Watkins and her talk was ‘Yesterday’s Fashion’. She had brought along some vintage clothing which had belonged to her late aunty. Many were still in their original packaging with pre-decimal prices on the labels. There were cardigans, blouses, scarves, dainty tea aprons, and stockings. They were mainly made from natural materials - wool, cotton, and silk. Maureen volunteered to be our model for the evening and she made a very good job of it too. Members thoroughly enjoyed this evening.

Eleven members attended the Soroptimists Federation Conference in Liverpool and were inspired by the different projects being undertaken by Soroptimists across the world. Keynote speakers included Sally Kettle, Terry Waite and Ranulph Fiennes who were inspiring in many different ways. Singing for Memory continues to be very popular. If you or someone you know has problems with memory, dementia or problems with speech why not consider attending sessions at Allithwaite on a Thursday morning. Ring Janice 58001 or Isabel 36378.

Cartmel Art Society

Club members were in Barrow Market Hall raising awareness about Modern Day Slavery on Anti-Slavery Day in October. A similar display will be in Grange library for a week marking Abolition of Slavery Day (December 2nd).

In the New Year, our first meeting is on Tuesday 8th of January when we welcome Stella Adams-Schofield who will be leading a workshop on Design. New members are most welcome. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and if interested please contact the Secretary Anne Covell on: 01539-737049.

Grange Garden Society

The first of our winter afternoon meetings took place in October, when Fiona Butcher, a Cumbrian plant specialist, told us about her experiences as a holder of a National Plant Collection of Wisteria. Collection holders are dedicated growers who ensure that a particular plant species thrives and is conserved.

Fiona started her Wisteria collection (initially all potted) in 2000, and has gradually adapted her garden to grow and display many varieties of this beautiful climbing plant.

She encouraged us to grow Wisteria, and not to be deterred by its potential size. The key to success is to control their growth by fearless hard pruning. In this way they can be trained to fit most situations; clothe a mansion, hide an unsightly shed, or, for those of us without gardens, grow in a pot as a Bonsai

| DECEMBER 2018 - Next deadline 14th DECEMBER

Members have thoroughly enjoyed and been inspired by two recent workshops. Patsy Derry demonstrated a painting technique using ink and bleach, with some fantastic results. Last week the very talented Roy Grogan was our guest artist who helped us create some beautiful work using watercolour washes. Wonderful to see such lovely work produced by our members in such a short time. The Society’s next event will be our Christmas party on November 28th when once again members can enter a painting competition with a seasonal theme ‘Winter’. The winner will receive the Constance Owen Trophy. Greatly looking forward to seeing our Cartmel Art Society sponsored Angel, decorated by talented members, she will feature in the Festival of Angels at Cartmel Priory on November 30th. Please come along and see our wonderful work!

Cartmel and District Flower Club

Cartmel and District Flower Club enjoyed a delicious Jacob’s Join lunch followed by the AGM. Reports were given on the activities during the year and also the financial statement. Three members of the committee retired and one new member was elected. After the meeting a talk was given by Richard Evans of the RSPB. The club’s next event will be its Christmas Gala on Tuesday December 11th at 7pm in the Victoria Hall, Grange when Mark Entwhistle will demonstrate some spectacular Christmas displays. Grange-Over-Sands Civic Society

A new handrail was installed on the wall surrounding Berners Close apartments on 24 October 2018. The purpose of the handrail is to provide assistance to people visiting the Health Centre, Berners Close car park and/or the Promenade via Olive Way.

Tricia Thomas, acting on behalf of the Civic Society, was the prime mover in the project. It was she who identified the need, secured the funding and arranged the fabrication and installation of the handrail. Tricia also secured agreement from Berners Close Management Ltd (to which many thanks) for the handrail to be affixed to their property. The project would not have been possible without generous donations from Councillor Eric Morrell, Dave Khan and the Lions and thanks are due to them all. (The Civic Society also donated to the project.)

On Remembrance Sunday the Society, along with many other organisations, laid a wreath during a very moving commemoration of the Centenary of the Armistice, first at St Paul’s Parish Church and then at the town’s war memorial in the Ornamental gardens.

Further details about the Civic Society may be found via its website at http://www.g-o-

Exclusive members-only competition with a festive feel. Our members have been working hard at their easels in a bid to be the face of Christmas for South Lakeland District Council (SLDC). In a competition judged on 22 November, the winning picture will be reproduced as Christmas cards to be sent out by SLDC.

Staying with the topic of competitions Jane Pape was the winner of our annual Millennium Competition. The topic of animals at play inspired Jane to feature boxing hares and a unicorn in a mystic woodland scene. The competition was a close-run thing with 3 paintings tied for first place forcing a second round of voting to produce the ultimate winner (see Jane’s painting on our Arts pages). Our AGM saw the same team of officers re-elected with Brenda Craven joining the committee. A new constitution was adopted and has now been circulated to all members.

LETTERS

Dear Editor,

Planning applications (SL2018/0897) have been submitted to build on land on South side of Allithwaite Rd. for up to 90 units together with shops, cafes and takeaways. Does Grange really want that many more houses and a possibly small retail unit on the edge of town? We already have plenty of small independent shops and do not want them closing and thus the town becoming like many other places with boarded up and empty premises scattered throughout. A major problem would also be the effect of extra heavy traffic on streets which they were not built to support. There is already considerable congestion with private cars and delivery vehicles and lack of alternative routes in the town and it seems folly to add to it. Please check out the SLDC website for planning and get your objection to this development in a.s.a.p. as the closing date is, apparently, 3rd December. We had KOGS before and it needs to be resurrected! Yours truly Jane Woodley, Belle Isle Terrace.

Dear Editor

Dear Editor,

After much consideration, a heavy heart and with mixed emotions, I would like to let you know that I will be starting the new year with a new challenge. I am leaving my role as the Branch Manager at the Furness Building Society’s Grange Branch and moving on with a new career in early January. I will still be living in Grange, (you can’t get rid of me that easily) and I will be working not too far away, but unfortunately I won’t see many of you as often as I have been used to. Furness Building Society’s Grange Branch has been my second home for over 12 long years and it will be difficult to no longer have it as such a major part of my life. I’ve been very lucky to work and live in such a wonderful community for such a long period of time. I’m going to miss all the members of staff that I have been lucky enough to have worked with, but I will especially miss all my wonderful and lovely customers, many of you I can also call my friends. It’s going to be very difficult to say goodbye to you, but I’d like to thank you all for your continuous support, your loyalty, putting your trust in me and making my job a very enjoyable one. Mandy Smith

We would like to say thank you to our many friends in the Grange area for being part of our lives for almost 30 years. It is a wonderful place to live and work.

We originally moved to the area when John was appointed Head of Science at Cartmel Priory School in 1990, before moving on to teach in Ulverston and Barrow. All three of our children attended Cartmel and as a family, we have lots of great memories of our involvement with the school. Sandra worked at Nutwood Surgery for 18 years, initially with Drs Norman and Irwin, and latterly at the new medical centre.

We were also very involved with the Churches Together Youth Trust and helped to run the Summer Holiday Club for many years as well as a number of Church-based Youth events and activities.

Before we left Allithwaite we opened our home for a ‘house cooling party’ and invited friends to make a financial contribution to leave a legacy to four causes close to our hearts. Thank you to all who contributed to this.

We have added to it and divided the money between Churches Together Youth Trust, Cartmel Priory School, Nutwood Surgery Charitable Trust and Ash Stannard who was a youth worker in the area for many years.

We will certainly miss living on the peninsula and the many people that we have known over the years. John and Sandra Towler

Dear Editor, I would like to thank John Brennand for delivering my post and papers for the last 30 plus years and wish him a long and happy retirement. Dorothy Edgar, Holes Farm, Flookburgh.

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
