Grange and District U3A is a thriving organisation with more than 380 members. There is a meeting held in the Victoria Hall, Grange on the third Tuesday of each month when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over coffee and a biscuit. The main activities take place in over 30 interest groups, co-ordinated by members, and these range from the sedentary and cerebral (lunch club, countdown, languages, bridge and wine appreciation), to the creative (crafts, writing for pleasure and digital photography)

and the active (geology, cycling and badminton).

Grange U3A holds its annual Enrolment Day at the Victoria Hall on Tuesday 18 March. This provides members with the opportunity to renew membership for the year but will be in the form of an open day, with the opportunity for the curious to learn more about us. Maximising the returns, be it growth, income or a combination of the two, from savings and investments is not only about selecting the best performing funds or the savings account paying the highest rate of interest; it is equally as important to ensure that they remain as tax efficient as possible so more of the return is retained by you. It is difficult to cover all the tax saving opportunities within an article such as this; the following are two common, and perhaps straightforward, options.

An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is an ideal way to invest; any tax paid on interest can be reclaimed within an ISA and capital growth is free of capital gains tax. Up to £15,000 per individual can be placed in an ISA this tax year (increasing to £15,240 from 6th April 2015). As the tax year end is only just over a month away (from date of publication) this means that you can shelter up to £30,240 from taxation within the space of six weeks; indeed a couple between them could shelter up to £60,480.

Every year you can take a gain on an investment without paying tax on the realised gain; this is one particular allowance that is often overlooked, and therefore lost. Capital

Gains Tax (CGT) is only charged when gains exceed your annual allowance, currently £11,000 per individual; capital gains (growth rather than income) is therefore free of tax up to this level. Multiple allowances can be used for jointly held assets, allowing further gains to be made tax free. Any realised gain in excess of this is taxed at 18%, or 28% for those that exceed the basic rate tax band (capital gains in excess of the annual allowance are added to other income).

Careful year on year tax planning can ensure tax on gains are minimised or preferably avoided altogether. As already noted, CGT planning can be doubly effective for jointly held assets. An investment should never be made simply from a tax position; however, making the most of tax allowances coupled with successful investment planning will compound returns year on year.

Is the future of Victoria Hall under threat?

At a meeting of the Facilities Committee which took place on Monday 16th February, the future of Victoria Hall was discussed.

Under threat

There is a possibility that South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) funding, which has helped with the running and maintenance costs of the hall, may be reduced or withdrawn leaving Grange Town Council, or the local taxpayers to be precise, picking up the tab. Grange Town Council took over the hall many years ago on the basis that SLDC supported the running of it. The annual funding varies but over the past few years it has amounted to around £20,000 - £25,000 a year. There are several options open to the council to improve the long term viability which include making further efficiency savings but also to increase revenue through more bookings but this would certainly require further investment to improve what's on offer. By the end of the meeting the Councillors agreed that there are probably three options open to them, and plan to explore them further. 1. Do nothing. Just keep running things as they are, while maintaining the building in a usable state. 2. Sell the hall. This begs the question of how saleable Victoria Hall is

considering the fact that it is a listed building, has limited access, and no parking, and is that what residents want? 3. Spend money on current facilities in order to attract more bookings to the hall as a venue for weddings, anniversary parties, 21sts etc. in order that the people of Grange get to keep what is essentially their ‘village hall’. Chairman of the Council, Tom Harvey said: "The Victoria Hall is an integral part of our Town. The overriding question is, do residents of Grange want to keep it, and more importantly, continue to actually use it? They pay for it, and I think it’s important we hear from those who both do and don't use it. Why do you use it, and for those that don't, what do we need to do to make it more attractive for more people to make use of it?" Do you feel strongly about Victoria Hall? Ulverston Police Station to close

Worry over response times

Grange Now has learnt that Ulverston Police Station is due to close from September this year. Grange Town Council were informed on 9th February that Cumbria Police have also asked officers for redundancy expressions of interest. Having contacted Cumbria Police on 16th February, Grange Now have learned that plans highlighted last October for a multi emergency services centre are still under discussion and are unlikely to have come to fruition by September this year. Response following the closure could be from Kendal and Barrow. There was concern expressed on the likely effect on response times. It is not known at this time where the existing Grange community team will be based. Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes and Chief Constable Jerry Graham delivered the stark message recently and despite being sympathetic the message is clear. On 28 January Richard Rhodes explained to Grange Now’s sister paper Windermere Now and local town councillors that since 2009 Cumbria Constabulary has had to save £16M, mainly through cutting “back office” costs. However, between now and 2019 further recurring savings of at least £11M must be found. When these have been implemented, expenditure

on Cumbria’s police will have been reduced by 25 per cent. Surprisingly however Grange Now also learned in an announcement on 12th February Cumbria Constabulary will be appointing up to 90 police officers in their latest recruitment drive.

During the financial year 20152016, the force is looking to recruit officers in a bid to bolster its ranks The application process is now open and closes on 27th February 2015. Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said:“Police Officers work hard to support our communities, to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and focus on the issues that matter most to local people.

“The new officers will replace officers who have retired and support the front line within local communities working with local people focussing on the areas that are important to them. Funding takes no account of a seasonal, but very significant 28 per cent, increase in population linked to temporary workers and

visitors . The financial challenge faced by Cumbria’s police service may also be compounded by other pressures. The Commissioner explained that one of these is the effect of the formula used to fund police forces. In the case of Cumbria this helps to underpin the additional cost of policing dispersed rural communities by enhancing funding by approximately 20%. He fears that this may come under scrutiny if metropolitan police forces with higher crime rates in their areas seek to attract funds allocated currently to low crime constabularies like Cumbria. Another problem is that in December Scotland Yard commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, called for the existing 43 forces across England and Wales to be replaced with nine regional ‘super forces’. The downside for Cumbria, if it were to become part of a large NW constabulary, said Commissioner Rhodes, is that funding could be channelled towards large crime vulnerable conurbations such as Manchester and Liverpool. The Labour Party supports this approach and so a change in government could see amalgamations. Chief Constable Jerry Graham said that Cumbria has the second lowest crime rate in the country and his aim is to “mitigate any harm to the public” as a result of cuts. Although Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and road patrols are a visible and desirable aspect of policing, there is much, he said, that happens outside the public eye that must also be funded: dealing with historic and current child exploitation, and the deterrence and detection of complex crime, are examples. With 85% of his budget made up of staff costs, the Chief Constable explained that frontline reductions in manpower are inevitable.

Scouting is Growing

Cooking up a storm

The 1st Grange & Cartmel Scout Group is growing and now has over 100 young people involved. This success means that they are starting a second Scout Troop on Monday evenings, which will begin on 23 February. The new Scout Leaders are all experienced, two of them have recently moved to the area to work, Zoe Penfold and Gina Daneliuk. Working with them is Mark Payne who also leads our Explorer Scout Unit. There are now opportunities for young people aged 10½ to 14 to join Scouts on either Mondays or Wednesdays. The Scouts recently entered two teams in the Kentdale District Cooking Competition. Although they did not win (they plan to do so next year) they produced some excellent food against a high standard. At the last meeting before half term the Scouts held a Pancake Pandemonium evening with awards for the most decorative, best tasting and the highest flipped! The Group has lots planned for 2015 including a Patrol Leader Training weekend, Beaver Sleepover and a Pack Holiday. Many of the young people in the Group are developing their archery skills making good use of the equipment purchased in 2014. With Cubs moving up into Scouts and Beavers moving up to Cubs there has never been a better chance of getting a place in one of the two Beaver Scout Colonies. John Carney

Local Dentist, John Carney, is raising money for the British Heart Foundation by walking to Everest Base Camp. Located over 17500ft above sea level, John will be walking over an 18 day period through the Himalayas to reach Everest Base Camp. John told Grange Now: “The British Heart Foundation do excellent work to pioneer research into new medications and advance surgical techniques. Having friends and family die through heart disease, I can think of no better charity to directly support.” When he decided to take on this challenge in November 2014, John organised an intense walking regime in the Lakes. Despite the recent weather resulting in waist deep snow, 70mph winds and sub-zero temperatures, John feels very optimistic about his adventures in Nepal. A new bike route which will pass through Grange has received a major boost in funding. Thanks to the Coastal Communities Fund, £300,000 will be invested in creating the UK’s first long distance cycle route accessible by electric bike, together with a bike infrastructure and including charge points along the way.

It is part of an award Morecambe Bay Partnership received in 2013 for a suite of projects to boost the visitor economy in the Bay area and included the 2020VISION exhibition and theatre show you'll remember from last year.The aim, to make Morecambe Bay a great destination for cyclists and cycle tourism. Not only that, the aim is to have it ready this summer! There is controversy however around the prospect of allowing the route to travel along the promenade in Grange.

A New Year “Revolution”

If, like most people, you started 2015 with good intentions - dreams of a fitter, sleeker figure - and have not met your own expectations, then don’t despair. This applies to the majority of us. However, how about keeping fit sitting down …. on a bicycle?

Janet Barton (Morecambe Bay Partnership) and Nicky Whinfield (Sustrans) gave a presentation to Grange Town Council on 9th February. They explained that the route had been two and a half years in development and offered a ‘cohesive spine’ to allow visitors to explore. It is not a challenge route where groups aim to go ‘fast as you can.’ Rather the ethos is a route where people take their time visiting cultural assets and heritage sites. Following a test drive last September there has been investment in signing, racks and mapping and the plan is to launch in June 2015. An information event on 11th March at Ulverston Coronation Hall will outline the opportunities for communities and businesses. It is hoped that a similar event will be held in Grange soon. Nicky Whinfield from Sustrans explained that it

Members of the public raised concern on a number of issues. Had permission been granted from SLDC, were healthy and safety issues properly addressed. Was there an insurance policy required and had proper thought been given to dangerous junctions - the right turn to Meathop being a good example?

More than anything however those members of the public who attended the presentation were concerned that the route would optionally follow the promenade in addition to or even instead of through the Grange town centre. Opinions were expressed as to safety as there is already traffic from both pedestrians and vehicles. Can the promenade accommodate an increase in cyclist numbers to the tune of an extra 30-40 a day. As recently as 2nd February SLDC confirmed that a final decision on route had not yet been taken. More on these objections can be seen on the letters page in this issue.

What do you think? Should the increase in visitors be routed through the town to enhance economic benefit and protect current prom users from more traffic? Or does it provide an opportunity to persuade SLDC to repair the promenade?

Belle Grange that opened in the summer of 2014. The two jetties will provide much improved access to the west shore by boat and more choice for walkers and cyclists. GoLakes is a £6.9M travel programme that aims to reduce the area’s CO2 emissions by 11,000 tonnes by 2015. The aim is to help local businesses and the economy, and to encourage visitors to make fewer car journeys in the Lake District.

Flookburgh lad wins top award

John the Lengthsman When I found John Gilmore, a resident of Grange for over 17 years, he was busy cleaning graffiti from the walls of the toilets off Pig Lane. We then moved on to another sign further down which was again put to rights with a clean and polish. It is this constant maintenance and attention to detail that helps to keep the town looking ship-shape and attractive to both residents and visitors alike. Covering the length and breadth of the parish (hence the name lengthsman) from Grange Golf Club to the top of the fell by the cemetery and then along the main path from Allithwaite to Grange top road. From clearing the snow in winter to strimming the paths and cutting weeds, John has been the lengthsman now for 6 years. John says, ‘It’s not just keeping the place clean and tidy, but it’s an opportunity to contribute to your own village and clean up the area where you live. It’s about having a

'APPY' LAD - Luke Atkinson

Flookburgh Primary School pupil, Luke Atkinson, seemed very bemused by his new found fame when Grange Now spoke to him on 13th February. Luke, 11, was thrust into the spotlight when he won a national Espresso Coding competition with his design for a winter themed app. Year 5 & 6 teacher Mr Ross entered his class into the competition as a way of teaching computer coding ahead of the new curriculum which the government brings into force next year. Mr Ross said Luke picked up the necessary skills very quickly and applied them to his game which the competition organisers described as ‘incredibly complicated to design’. His app is a game whereby 6 snowmen pelt santa with snowballs. Points are amassed when the snowballs are dodged. The game has 15 levels and is very complicated. Grange Now asked Luke, who is due to start Cartmel Priory School in September this year, if he intends to go into computer programming when he leaves school but, surprisingly, he said no. Luke said he is interested in farming and cars and hopes to be a mechanic when he leaves school. He told us he prefers to be outside. I’m sure this response will will have many a parent smiling including Luke’s own parents who are very proud of him.

At the end of this month (February), tenders are due to go out for TransPennine Express and Northern franchises. Cumbria County Council have been lobbying hard for improvements in our rail services and CCC’s lead member for transport, Councillor Keith Little has said this is a crucial time, “We are on the cusp of seeing what exactly we’re going to get in

our rail services for the next decade. We have been lobbying hard for improvements and telling government we need to see ambition, incentives for growth and flexibility in those tenders. The last franchises awarded in 2004, locked us into a poor quality service which did nothing to encourage investment and could not cope with the growth in passenger numbers. Celebration for £1.6m Grant for Wildlife £1.6 million has been awarded to Cumbria Wildlife Trust by the Heritage Lottery Fund for the purchase, restoration and access improvements to Eycott Hill, which lies between Penrith and Keswick near Mungrisdale

This Heritage Lottery Fund grant follows financial and moral support from hundreds of people across Cumbria. £150,000 has been donated by 400 supporters and other grants have been made by Wren, Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Eycott Hill

Eycott Hill was identified by Cumbria Wildlife Trust five years ago as a site for purchase due to its huge potential for restoration and as a demonstration site for wildlifefriendly upland land management. It is an exceptionally rich area of 216 hectares of wildlife habitat set in a spectacular location within the stunning scenery of the Lake District National Park.

Writer, broadcaster and fell walker Stuart Maconie says: “The news that Cumbria Wildlife Trust has been granted Heritage Lottery Fund money to begin restoration and access work on Eycott Hill is wonderful news for those of us who love this rough and shapely hill in a gloriously lonely and unspoilt part of the Lakes. Get up there and see for yourself.”

Helen Duxbury, Development Manager at Cumbria Wildlife Trust, says “It has taken two years, many grant applications and lots of requests to our members for support, but I am over the moon we have secured this final grant. I’m now looking forward to restoration work and access improvements getting underway this spring.” Eycott Hill is the largest isolated piece of open access land in the National Park and the full grant will enable Cumbria Wildlife Trust to provide public access to the site for the first time.

Visitors will be able to see upland conservation in action at close range and will be able to enjoy an excellent lower level walk in an upland environment – great for those days the weather is bad in the high fells.

A community project that will blow you away! High Winds is a continuation of the very successful wind farm that is Baywind, which was launched in 1996 with a share offer for a community owned wind farm near Ulverston. Baywind has operated for 18 years generating renewable electricity and rewarding its member investors with the surplus earned after operating expenses have been deducted. Like Baywind, High Winds has a co-operative like structure and will join other co-operatives under the Energy4All umbrella. Apprentice and Careers Fair

For anyone interested in apprenticeships, Kendal College will be holding an ‘Apprentice and Careers Fair’ on Thursday 12th March between 2-7pm. The event will coincide with National Apprenticeship Week and will include the involvement of employers, training providers, volunteer and gap year organisations and careers services. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the many and varied opportunities available to both the young people and adults in our community. As such, the event is open to the public as well as Kendal College students. We spoke to one University graduate, Lorena Keating from Grange, who had this to say on apprenticeships: “In my final year of college, there was a real emphasis on university being the next step if you wanted a fulfilling, successful career. However, after finishing a 3 year degree, I was left with a degree but no work experience which limits you to graduate jobs and very few other companies who are willing to train you. An apprenticeship allows you to study towards a qualification in your field whilst working to gain that invaluable experience. I wish I had known more about apprenticeships before making the choice to go to University.” A local Apprenticeship tutor told Grange Now: “Over the last few years there has been a huge increase in students doing apprenticeships. I believe this is in part due to government investment, as much as growth returning to the UK market. The result of this is that young people now have a credible alternative to full time education and University.

Lights at Trevenna raise record total for NSPCC Every year local vet, Jeremy Voakes, along with wife Mandy, decorate their house on Green Lane with thousands of Christmas lights. I am sure many of you reading this have been along with (and without) children to see this amazing sight. Trevenna, which is situated near the foot of Applebury Hill between Allithwaite and Cark, put on its best show ever last year and this is possibly why an incredible £3104.82 has been raised for the NSPCC. As I reported to the Town Council on the 9th February the County Council Lib Dem Labour Cabinet are recommending to Full Council a 2% increase in council tax later in the month. I will not be supporting this proposal and will be voting against it.

The County Council Senior Manager with responsibility for Highways and I reported to the Town Council at this meeting on the results of the nine areas where traffic monitoring had taken place before Christmas.

Of the six locations in the centre of the Town the average speed was shown to be well within the speed limit and of the three on the outskirts they were within 10% of the 30mph limit. The Senior Manager agreed to undertake more monitoring in the summer months to give the Town Council the information

card delivered with your magazine to show that you, too, wish the town to have such a document. Already a great deal of work has been carried out by the Steering Group who meet fortnightly and a great deal more work will be undertaken before the culmination of the Plan. The starting point for this was the massive amount of information you gave us when you filled in your questionnaires for the Community Led Plan, the results of which were published and delivered to every household last autumn. At a later stage there will be another opportunity for you to support this venture as once the Neighbourhood Plan is written we will need a Referendum to ratify it before it becomes a legally binding document. Once in place it will give the town a plan for the future. We can’t stop development within Grange but this document will go some way

relating to a busier period of time. This will enable us to compare volumes of traffic and speeds to help understand the movement of vehicles through and in the Town.

I would like to add my thanks to the Highways team that have just recently re-surfaced part of Hampsfell Road and Pig Lane in the centre of the Town. They managed the process with a minimum of inconvenience and disruption to us all and did an excellent job.

Our Local County Council Engagement Officer Kelly Alty is leaving us to pastures anew. I would just like to thank her on your behalf for all the dedicated work she has done for our communities here in the Grange Area. Sadly for us, she is moving on to pastures new and I am sure we would all like to wish her a happy and successful future. The next Council Outreach session will be on Friday March 13th at the Library from 10 am until 12 noon. I hope some of you will take the time to drop in and have a chat with us. The other day I was able to have a meeting with the Schools Minister, David Laws MP, to press the case for more government funding for school transport.

The government has increased the age at which students can stop studying to 18 but has done nothing to help pay for the cost of getting students to school or college when they are over 16. This is particularly tough on those students who are in the catchment of a school, like Cartmel, that does not have a sixth form so they suddenly find that the amount they have to pay in transport shoots up when they turn 16. I argued strongly that the Government should consider introducing a “rural pupil premium” as an extension of the pupil premium they have already introduced to for children who need more support. Failing to provide this support for children in rural areas, leaving the finding of any funding to the local authority (who shorter of cash than ever) is simply unfair and yet another

example of something that makes it even harder for ordinary people to live outside big towns.

Transport has been a bit of a theme this month. A report came out earlier this year showing that Cumbria had cut the amount spent on transport more than any other authority in the North West of England. At their meeting last month the council decided to withdraw all subsidies from scheduled bus services.

This is again particularly unfair to people who live outside big towns. It seems to me that there are any number of things that the council can do to save money before they need to think about removing all subsidies. They could look at joint commissioning of transport services across all the councils involved in these decisions so allowing efficiencies and making it more likely that the services work together. They could also allow council members who have a budget of £10,000 to spend on projects and improvements in their electoral divisions to spend this on bus services. All of this could enable the council to fund things like later

running of buses around education establishments. I am pressing them to look into these and other measures before they even consider reducing subsidies that inevitably hit rural services harder than those in towns and cities. As ever the month has also seen its fair amount of campaigning for improved services for our hospital in Kendal. We have launched a petition demanding that the hospital trust reinstate 24 hour maternity cover in the Helm Chase unit at the hospital. We were told that the removal was a temporary measure brought on by staff shortages but I am still waiting to receive confirmation that this is the case. The RotaKids were well prepared for the visit and asked some interesting questions including: “What two achievements are you most proud to have brought in as MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale?

Tim responded: “Improvement in the rail network to bring more tourists into The Lake District and the imminent radiography unit in Kendal.” In a typical week MP Tim spends Monday – Thursday in The House of Commons in London, a return to his constituency on Thursday evening to enable him to spend Fridays in the local area meeting people either

A father of four children in local state schools himself; Tim expressed his commitment to high quality education and health. When asked what ambitions he had as a young boy in primary school, Tim promptly replied he wanted to be an astronaut. Indeed, since becoming MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim has clocked up 228,000 miles in his car; enough to take him to the moon!

The meeting ended with the RotaKids proudly giving Tim a tour of the school. Rotarian John Biddlestone said: “it was an excellent opportunity for the RotaKids of Grange CE Primary School to gain valuable insights into the role of an MP, and how Parliament works.”

Careers advice at Cartmel Priory

It is at this time of year that students and young people are starting to think about the next step in their education or career. Grange Now spoke to Cartmel Priory School and they told us: “Students at Cartmel Priory School have a fine record of academic achievement. In 2014, the school was one of six schools in the South Lakes performing better than the national average in terms of the % of students securing five or more A*-C grades (including English and maths). More importantly, the school was one of four in the South Lakes that achieved better than the national average in terms of academic value added since primary school (John Ruskin, Queen Elizabeth and Settlebeck being the other three schools). Whilst good exam results have been shown to be linked closely to future success, however, it is also essential that every student gets the right individual guidance and advice on career pathways.”

Cartmel has a Careers and Work Related Learning Coordinator, who ensures that guidance is available at different stages of the students’ school careers from Key Stage 3 onwards. There is, however, a particularly strong focus during Years 10 and 11, when students are supported through mock interviews, health & safety training, work placements and a careers fair. During Year 11, every student also has an individual interview to discuss their future career plans with a personal adviser. They are taught how to use the Careers Library and computer programmes to find out more about the types of academic courses/work in which they are interested. Students record their achievements, set targets for the future and complete a personal statement. The school has also been delighted to welcome back successful ex-students who have gone onto Oxbridge Colleges to encourage the academically able students to set their aspirations high.

Do you like computers? Like helping people? Have time to spare? You could be just the person we’re looking for! At Grange Library we are looking for enthusiastic, friendly volunteers to help people with little or no experience of using computers or tablets. You’ll need a few hours to spare on a regular basis (times are flexible) whilst the library is open. We will arrange a mandatory DBS check (previously CRB) for you. Please contact the library for more information on 32749 or email grange.library@cumbria.gov.uk On Monday 2nd March Thelma, our Macmillan Volunteer, will be available in the library to provide advice on the information available including Macmillan booklets and library books in the Macmillan collection, from 12 noon to 2 pm. This is open to preschool children and their carers, no need to book just come along with your little ones and join in the fun! If you, or someone close to you, has dementia, come and talk to a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society on Friday 13th February between 10 am to 12 noon, to find out more about the condition and also what help is available. Councillor Outreach will take place on Saturday 14th March between 10 am and noon. Town Councillors from Grange Town Council will be available to talk to about concerns relating to the Grange area. Please note that due to the layout of the library confidential matters cannot be discussed at this Outreach and for these a separate appointment should be made with the Town Council. We have 3 different displays in the library this month. For the first 2 weeks Allithwaite & Cartmel WI are celebrating the Women’s Institute Centenary and Ulverston Outsiders are promoting their performance of Fawlty Towers. Then we will have a display of a selection of photographs of Nepal, together with prayer flags and children’s artwork. The 532 & 530 bus timetable changed again on 16th February 2015. Copies of the new timetable are now available to collect in the Library.

Amanda Hunter - designer silversmith

Amanda hails from South Africa, and she studied for a degree in Art and Design at the University of Cape Town.

Amanda told Grange Now: “ I left South Africa as a young woman, and then had a long career in community development and international adult education before returning full time to silversmithing five years ago.” She continued “I am permanently resident in Grange over Sands. My studio is in Beech Road. It’s not open to the general public other than for Art Trails, but people are welcome to visit by appointment or to spend a day learning how to make silver jewellery." Amanda also teaches silversmithing and enamelling as part of the adult education programme at Cartmel Priory School. The next Saturday workshops are on 14 March and 9th May. Grange Youth Theatre - on tour

Grange Youth Theatre Group (GYTG) recently took their amazing pantomime, Sleeping Beauty on tour to Cumbria’s Childrens Hospice JIGSAW for the young patients, their families and the staff to enjoy. Performing in the hospice setting was a very special time for all the children involved. interviewed and recorded several people involved. Following this performance they did a bucket collection and raised £215.00 for JIGSAW. The money the GYTG have raised this year, has helped the Children's Hospice to undertake 3 brand new outreach projects: To enable the Children's Hospice nurses to take many of the services provided at JIGSAW out into the community and into the family's home.

The performance will run nightly at 7.30pm from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th March with a matinee performance at 2.30pm on Saturday. Westmorland Orchestra

A concert to herald the opening of the Mary Wakefield Westmorland Music Festival and the arrival of spring – Three appealing and popular works by Mendelssohn, Brahms and Beethoven. Conductor: Richard Howarth Leader Pamela Redman (of Ulverston). The concert will take place on Saturday 14th March at Kendal Leisure Centre. The Overture The Hebrides (or Fingal’s Cave as it is sometimes known because this title was written on the first published score) was written after the 19-year-old Mendelssohn returned from a visit to Scotland. IAN BUCKLE is to be the soloist in the Piano Concerto no. 2 by Brahms. New Comedy Night in Ulverston A new night of stand-up comedy is coming to The Kings Hotel, Ulverston starting on 1st of March. Flookburgh based comedian, Mike Wilkinson, is hosting the first show which features headline comics Barry Dodds and Gary Delaney.

Mike, who last year filmed a series of Internet viral adverts for United Utilities ‘Water tight’ campaign in Cartmel, Grange and even his own kitchen told Grange Now: “I’m looking forward to putting some shows on locally. Bay Community Singers are staging a Spring Concert on Thursday 26th March at 7:30pm in Grange United Reformed Church on Kents Bank Road. Green Door Art Trail

Now in its 10th year, the extremely successful Green Door Art Trail will take place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March. The event runs throughout the South Lakes area but Cark is going to be a real hotspot. There will be nine artists exhibiting and demonstrating at Lower Holker Village Hall from 10.30 to 5pm each day. As well as a wide variety of art to admire and maybe purchase there will be homemade refreshments on sale. Also in Cark at Applegarth, Sunny Bank, Keith and Elizabeth Shorrock will be opening their workshop and studio to visitors. South Cumbria Musical Festival

The 2015 festival takes place between Sunday 22nd and Saturday 28th March and is held as usual in the Coronation Hall, Ulverston. The festival starts with brass classes on Sunday and follows on with speech, piano, woodwind, strings, choirs, vocals and culminating in a Gala Night on Saturday when performers from all disciplines compete for a valuable performance award in a cabaret setting. 20 years of work finally make the stage

Flookburgh & District Amateur Operatic Society(FDOS) hope you will go along and see their new musical, ‘The Adventures of Tom Dixon - Just a Little War’.

The music and lyrics for the production’s 11 songs have been written by FDOS member, Graeme Livingstone. Follow the life and times of Tom Dixon as he goes from local fluke fishing to join the Ulverston Volunteers and then to enlist with the regular army. His career sees him fighting with Wellington in Spain and Portugal and finally at Waterloo.

Single, but don’t want to go out on your own? Nina Scott is organiser behind a series of social events designed to being single people together in the glorious surroundings of the Lake District. Lakes Singles Nights (LSN), aim to attract members from throughout the north west at a range of different venues. The aim, says Nina, is to provide social networking in the real world for single people, with events at

cocktail bars, outdoor activities, music venues, art and theatres, and lake cruises. LSN hopes to provide a busy and exciting social life in a world often dominated by couples.

“We want to provide friendship and companionship for people of all ages. Singles often feel isolated and are spending time trying to make friends, or find dates, online. This is a return to the traditional face-to-face way of meeting people,” says Nina. Similar schemes work very well in

London and other cities and Miss Scott hopes to bring this to the Lakes and take the pressure out of socialising. Nina continued: “We want to make sure that everyone – single, divorced, widowed – can have a good night out without being part of a couple. And without necessarily going on a date.”

Allithwaite Primary

PARK LIFE: The Allithwaite Infants visiting South Lakes Wildlife Park

Last month we asked local residents to share their experiences of World War II to support the learning in Year 5 and 6. In addition to the poetry shared by an evacuee in Allithwaite, we have had offers from members of the community to join us in school and discuss their experiences. The children have been busy exploring a range of perspectives relating to the War and have found this fascinating. In contrast pupils in Year 3 and 4 have continued to explore Ancient Greek History, examining Myths and creating some fantastic Greek style pottery. The children will be putting on a play

focusing on Greek Myths to share with the school and parents.

In the infants the children had a wonderful experience visiting the South Lakes Wildlife Park. The children fed the penguins and Emus creating both trepidation and excitement! This proved to be a perfect way to draw the topic together and reinforce what they had been studying this term. We have a great deal of activity planned for the rest of the term including Science Week, World book Day and plenty of Easter celebrations including Forest day for the whole school.

Nursery children have been making and investigating ice cubes, and learning about Chinese New Year. They also held a Learn Together morning shared with staff, friends and parents. Every child enjoyed “ teleporting” into Chinese culture especially with all lovely Chinese food brought and prepared by staff and parents. Reception children led a whole school assembly explaining to older children all about Chinese New Year and celebrations. Older KS1 children were looking at Greek mythology and investigating a plant’s life cycle followed by relevant experiments. Nurture Group children have been learning how to get transferred into an imaginary world based on book titled “Where the Wild Things Are”. KS2 children’s topic this term is “The World Around Us”. Cartmel Priory School - Fun in the Alps

A recent School trip to Austria from the Children's viewpoint When I went on the ski trip to Austria with a school group recently, it was amazing. We stayed in a hotel, which was lovely. It was semi-modern – by that I mean it looked old-fashioned in some places but modern in others. We skied mainly in Alpendorf. We got divided into 3 groups – beginners, intermediates and experts. I was in the beginners group, with a lot of other people from my school as it was the first time lots of us had skied. Everyone did an outstanding job - I went from not being able to put on a pair of goggles or do snowploughs to going round corners and almost doing parallel turns by the end of the week. I would definitely go again and would recommend this ski trip to others. The only thing was the coach trip, it took over 24 hours to get there (and back again), but there isn’t really anything anyone can do to change that! Jack, Year 8

It was a long journey but we eventually got to Austria and it was an absolutely brilliant! Everyone was really kind and the hotel was really great. We had early starts and late nights but these were all worth it as the skiing was perfect and the evening activities were really fun. There were also some spectacular falls and crashes but thankfully, nobody was injured. I really want to go again next year. Libby, Year 7

Lindale Primary & Pre-school Nursery Lindale Pre-School has had a busy start to 2015. A big focus of the last few weeks has been winter weather—which has been in good supply.

Children have enjoyed winter roleplay activities, painted pictures of snowmen and paid a visit to Lindale’s village shop to buy winter vegetables. More recently we have put on a ‘Dinosaur Week,’ making lots of model dinosaurs and reading some fun stories. Children have also been learning phonics, which helps to make sure they are ready for primary school when the time comes to move on from the Nursery. The cold weather

Class 1 have been busy building their own shops outside and also ordering on-line for their end of term party; calculating the cost of the party food. We are looking forward over half –term to the installation of a new climbing frames and other playground equipment, thanks to the very generous donation of a local company.

‘Spring’. Jill Ludlow chaired the meeting and talked about a jigsaw designer and cartoonist, and had a box of his to illustrate her talk about his humour. There was a lovely display of snowdrops and daffodils. We listened to a piano solo, readings and poems about spring and a member sang a solo. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Members of Network held their annual soup and dessert lunch on Friday morning, and many people enjoyed the home made fare. This is a fund raiser for World Missions and folks rally round in support.

During their recent annual Away Day, the Parochial Church Council took their first look at the architects’ preliminary plans for the re-ordering of St Paul’s. These plans will be discussed with the congregation this month when the two architects will be available to present their ideas and to answer questions.

Churches Together in Grange & District On 18th January Mr Lawrence Moore, Director of The Windermere Training Centre of the United Reformed Church, was the speaker at St Paul's Church. His words were centred on it being the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. There were very wise words for everyone present, and we all had new thoughts to take home.

In March there is the LENT COURSE running for 5 weeks. Weekly meetings are held at various places, on different weekdays. Full details are available at any Church.

Also there is a Lent Lunch each Friday; this is from noon to 1.15 pm. Details again from any Church. Mainly for the ladies, 6th March will be the occasion of Women's World Day of Prayer at Boarbank at 2 pm. GADAG News TRICKETT’S FIELD – although the application for 64 houses was granted by a mere 5 Planning Councillors, almost undiscussed, there remain issues with drainage of the site, as Cumbria County Council, the Lead Drainage Authority, have failed to endorse the plans for surface water run-off. However, we suspect that this will not prevent the SLDC Planning Officer and the Developers continuing to forge ahead. The planned loss of the Lime Trees on Kents Bank Road is another fait accompli. Local views are consistently over-ridden. JACK HILL – there have been further discussions between residents and Cumbria County Council Highways Officers; access to this potential new development from the very narrow Jack Hill remains extremely contentious, despite plans to redesign the 4-way junction of Allithwaite Road, Kirkhead Road, Jack Hill and Holme Lane. It is notable that the relevance of Kirkhead Road is almost entirely discounted by the developers and planners. LAND BETWEEN ALLITHWAITE ROAD & GREAVES WOOD – this is a potentially huge development of perhaps 200 houses which will be coming forward for discussion sometime within the next 12/15 months – surveyors have already been seen taking measurements throughout the area. It is an agglomeration of individual fields known collectively as MN25M on all the development maps. The one saving grace is that there will be serious, and full, public meetings before any decisions are made. But, as always within Grange and Kents Bank, there are serious flooding issues to be addressed. Dear Editor, My husband went to recycle some household stuff in Grange and met a man there who was fizzing with fury. This man had chanced to be on the site when the wagon came to empty the separate bins and they ALL went into the same container. Q. Dear Editor, As a local resident with a keen interest in any new proposal for Grange, my attention was caught by the Agenda for the Council meeting on the 9th of February 2015 which included an item regarding Morecambe Bay Partnership and Sustrans to update the community on their plans for the Bay Cycle Way, represented by Janet Barton and Nikki Wingfield. I attended the meeting and spoke of my concerns regarding the state of the Prom and the fact that no work is planned by S.L.D.C. It appears that this, new raising awareness for cyclists, is linked to a Government initiative with funding available and is basically a “done deal” as no planning is required, only signs/maps/ information. It is envisaged that an additional 40 bikes per day will be in the area, resulting in over 3.000 in a year. Plans are in hand to introduce electric bikes from hire shops. A meeting was held on 12/1/15 this was attended by 3 Cllrs, Greenway, Thomas and Thorne, other Councillors from their comments; appeared to have little or no knowledge of this proposal for the Bay Cycle Way. I feel that more publicity should have taken place in the town and a chance for residents to record their concerns or support. The Prom is very well used by residents and visitors with a number of special events such as the Edwardian Festival and the very popular and busy Prom Art, surely input from these groups should be fully represented when making a final planned route for a Bay Cycle Way. It is now hoped that a meeting/drop in session can be arranged so that local residents can be more fully informed of Morecambe Bay Partnership’s plans, the date has yet to be decided, but the timescale for the launch is 13/14 of June 2015. Well I thought I’d try and make a difference so have adopted of a stretch of road where I walk my dog picking up and recycling the offending items, a chance for dog owners to redeem some of their reputation perhaps. It’s heartening to know there are lots of you unsung heroes out there in our community I caught a man tidying up a verge adjacent to Cark station, he told me no one seems to own the land so he removes the cans, bottles and rubbish every few months. I guess we could all say well it’s the councils job but in these days of increasing cut back are we really likely to see much progress in that direction and do we really want to live adjacent to a rubbish tip. I attended the Grange Town Council Meeting on Monday to listen to a presentation from the Morecambe Bay Partnership and Sustrans, with regard to creating a cycle route from Walney to Glasson Dock, which would pass through Grange. There were two routes planned, one along the Esplanade and the other along the promenade. The advantages to the Town were emphasised , the usage by cyclists of the shops, cafes, accommodation etc; however the promenade route would by-pass everything except the café. At the present time the promenade can accommodate local cyclists, but an influx of maybe thousands would be detrimental. The promenade provides a safe place for small children to ride bikes, use their scooters, mothers with prams, joggers, the elderly with disability vehicles, dogs on and off leads. The promenade is a major asset to the Town because of its uniqueness. On Prom Art days it is only just possible to walk along, so there could be conflict if cyclists thought they have right of way. By all means trial the route through the Town, collect data after a year, before promoting the promenade route. The Morecambe Partnership and Sustrans only finance maps and signage, they would not be contributing anything to the maintenance of the promenade or the purchase of cycle racks in the town. At Grange Town Council meeting on Monday 9th February plans, by Morecambe Bay Partnership, for a cycle route through Grange (using the one that already exists) but with the possibility that the Prom would also be a route were explained (it is legal to cycle on the Prom). Whilst I do not disagree with a cycling route I do object to a non- elected organisation deciding what will happen in Grange, although SLDC will have to agree to the route. An SLDC councillor, present at the meeting, did not wait to hear the presentation or to state what SLDC’s view was. Grange, yet again has not been properly consulted or made fully aware of what is happening. Adding the Prom to a national cycling route could mean 35 to 40 cyclists using the Prom a day. Think about current usage, both daily and during the holiday season. MBP has been planning this for over 2 years, at a very late point point they informed/involved Grange Town Council. I know this matter has been raised many times in Grange Now – dog owners allowing their pets to foul pavements and footpaths. The majority of owners do pick up after their dogs but there is still a hard core minority who don’t bother, or allow their pets to run free and defecate with impunity. I walk my grandchildren to Grange School most mornings and every time we have to pick our way through a minefield of dog dirt. It is particularly bad towards the top of Laundry Hill and on both sides of Fernleigh Road near the junction with Rockland Road. It must happen early in the morning and could be that an owner has let his/her dog(s) off the lead as there is no attempt to make the dog use the gutter or a verge. The dog seems to receive a call of nature and reacts to it – right in the middle of Laundry Hill or on the pavement above on Fernleigh Road. I deduce that the dog or dogs must live fairly nearby and let out/taken out after a night indoors, so is fairly keen to ‘use the lavatory’ at the start of their exercise – or perhaps they are let out just for this purpose? So if you are the irresponsible dog owner, PLEASE pick up after your dog (or possibly dogs). I know other areas of Grange are similarly affected. Why do some dog owners not bother? It is very antisocial behaviour. And apart from being horribly unsightly it can be a dangerous health hazard to young children. M A Harris,Grange over Sands

What has happened to the supposed Little Victorian Resort. It is not the Grange i remember 60yrs ago,you walk along the Prom. there is no longer any sand for the children to play in only grass, and the smell that permeates from sections of it along towards the cafe appear to be coming from some discharge pipes, and particularly in the Spring and Summer the smell is disgusting. Then we come to the boarding around the derelict Lido,instead of putting posters up which is only trying to paper over the cracks and disguise the fact that it is a eye sore,if the parties,whom ever they are,cannot get any grants or funding to improve the site then it would be better if it was demolished and used as an addition to the Prom.this situation has gone on long enough and we do not seem to be moving forward. In the Community Led Plan 2014,visitors commented on the derelict Lido and that it was the main unsightly feature,we understand that the plan is to improve the appearance of the Lido in the short term,in our opinion putting posters up for another year is not a short term improvement it is becoming a long term non solution this building has been in this state for years.We are not sure if the Lido has been given listed building status if that is the case then it wants removing.If were getting rats from the old toilets infesting the childrens play area what are we getting from the derelict Lido. This wonderful group of ladies meet all through the year and raise money for various local charities and the night of the presentation was no exception. A silent auction took place, raising more funds, followed by a very tasty ‘Jacob’s Join’ supper. Without wonderful gifts from people like Mothers & Others, the specialist services provided by JIGSAW, would not be able to carry on and due to this help the Hospice will also be able to provide an outreach service, enabling more families to benefit from this fantastic service. LEGAL TALK Scared to death

I received an email from a member of my team last week and it said this:Just thought I would let you know, I was speaking to a neighbour last night who had been to arrange mum’s funeral and while he was there, they had given him a quote for sorting out probate and administering his mum’s estate. There is a house involved but pretty straight forward, a few bank accounts and few share holdings the total would not go over the Inheritance Tax limit of £325,000. Some of dad’s estate was not sorted before mum died. He was quoted £6,000 to deal with mum’s estate, including finishing off dad’s. That seems a lot! I nearly fell off my chair. A simple estate, with no tax problems to worry about, for £6,000. Being charitable and assuming this includes the VAT, this is a fee of £5,000. That fee sounds enormous to me. There may be some wrinkles in it that we don’t know about. It may be that dad’s estate is big enough to need a Grant of Probate which would add some cost but even so, I think we would charge half that and, if dad’s estate does not need a Grant of Probate, then less again. I also saw some exchanges on a LinkedIn network that I have joined, in which solicitors were voicing disbelief at some of the fees that other probate service providers and solicitors charge, relying on the old system of percentage values, hourly rates and a bit of a mark-up for luck. We don’t do that! We look at the person’s estate, the terms of their Will and what is going to be involved in sorting things out, start to finish. We then propose a fixed fee which is fair to you and fair to us. There is no pressure on you then to accept this and if you chose not to use our services, we will still point you in the right direction for sorting things out. If you do lose someone close, money isn’t everything. Sympathy and service counts for a lot. But I know my mother would come back and haunt me if I paid over the odds to sort her estate out. All you need to do is come in to see us for a sensible discussion, some good advice and a fixed fee quote that won’t scare you to death. Cartmel & District Flower Club On Monday 16th February we held our first demonstration of the year"Bring me Sunshine" by John Thexton a very apt title on a beautiful spring day.John used a combination of Hyacinths Narcissi Roses Carnations Gerbera Yellow catkins also red catkins and some unusual foliage from the many gardens he visits.The village hall was filled with laughter as John related many very amusing stories of his farmer friends and customers and of his numerous purchases including containers accessories, horses, sheep, horse boxes etc, his comment was "being in the right place at the right time." A fun afternoon enjoyed by the members and visitors. At our next meeting on Monday March 16th we welcome Sara Barrow -Preston and her demonstration entitled ‘In Vogue’. Cartmel village hall 2pm. North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild Members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met on Tuesday 3rd of February when Sandra Kendall, our Chairperson, took members through the process of adding design and pattern to fabric using stamps and fabric paints. To start with, commercial stamps were used but later on we were shown how to make our own from a variety of objects and materials. The resultant fabrics will provide wonderful backgrounds for embroideries. The next meeting will be on Tuesday the 3rd of March when we will be welcoming Mary Taylor who will give us a talk and demonstration entitled “My Work”. This will be in the morning and in the afternoon members will work on their current project.

Lower Holker WI Last month's talk by Elizabeth Shorrock was "My Life in Books", and what an interesting subject it was! From miniature books made from old maps to special occasion commissions. Grange Forum Though Forum`s winter lecture season ends this month, the club`s activities continue through the spring and summer, with theatre trips, a lunch outing and a day out in Scotland. Three new shows have been added to the theatre outings programme: The Ghosts of Ruddigore, Opera del Luna`s adaptation of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera at Keswick`s Theatre-by-theLake on Thursday, April 2; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the funny and sophisticated musical direct from London`s West End at Manchester Opera House on Thursday, May 28; the popular musical The Full Monty at Blackpool Grand on Wednesday, September 16, followed by a tour of the illuminations. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI The February meeting of Allithwaite & Cartmel WI was both productive and full of fun as members folded and creased paper under the excellent instruction of Stephen Watson who gave us a talk on ‘The Art of Origami’. In the initial part of his talk he gave us examples of the many unusual uses of the art including space technology. On a more down to earth note, the quick flick that folded a t-shirt had a queue of members asking for a personal demonstration later in the meeting. With much laughter and chat we all made a small paper box and were delighted when the lid fitted with ease. The next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd March at 2.00pm when the speaker Frances Benton will speak

Grange WI Members had a very creative start to the New Year - making origami flowers under the watchful eye of Amy Holland. It was quite a fiddly operation but great fun - especially using the glue gun. And we all had pretty flowers to take home. Grange over Sands Golf Club We have had a good February so far with nice frosty days and hard ground but we have still been able to play golf which we are all delighted with. There will be catering services every day from the beginning of March so you can start the day with a bacon bap before play and you can finish off a round of golf with something to eat and drink in the friendly Club house. Club Competitions for members start in March and Fixture Lists are ready to be collected. The Opens are beginning to get booked now so please have a look online and book your tee times for the various Open Competitions.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society In February Dr Suzanne Tiplady gave a fascinating talk about the history of the four Grizedale Halls. The earliest one was built in the 13th century by the Tomlinson family. The Rawlinson family, iron and copper mining magnates, married into the Tomlinson family and inherited the Hall. Several generations later it became the Poor House. In the 18th century came the first demolition and the second Hall was rebuilt in farmhouse style. Henry Ainslie, another iron and copper magnate, then acquired it by marrying Agnes Ford. In 1853, their son built Ford Lodge, on another part of the estate. This building resembled his former home in India. The old Hall was renamed Home Farm- a building which stands today. Ford Lodge became the third Grizedale Hall and it was sold in 1902 to Harold Brocklebank, a Liverpool shipping magnate. He demolished it and built a lavish fourth Hall. Later the Forestry Commission bought the Hall and it was let for holiday accommodation. In 1939 the Hall became a Prisoner of War camp for German officers. Abandoned after the war this fourth Hall was demolished in 1958. All that remains are the terrace balustrade and some outbuildings.

Witherslack WI Twenty members and 3 visitors were present at the February Meeting which started with the 3rd attempt at a Group photo to commemorate our 90th Anniversary. Treasurer Shirley Christie was celebrating an important birthday. .She received a large floral bouquet and Pauline Hodgson had made a sumptuous cake which was much enjoyed. The speaker was Annie Rose the Heavy Horse lady. In spite of

technical problems and poor pictures , Annie conveyed her passion for these lovely horses, mainly Clydesdales, which are used only for riding and not farm work.The trek from Skye to their new home in West Cumbria with the horses taking 5 1/2 weeks was an extraordinary feat. Cartmel Art Society In mid- January our programme of workshops and afternoon painting sessions resumed in the Village Hall. Our members have enjoyed two full day workshops led by well known local artists Fiona Clucas and Graham Twyford. Fiona displayed plants and twigs from the hedgerow to inspire us to paint a landscape and wildlife painting using mixed media and gouache. Members produced pleasing results after trying various techniques demonstrated by Fiona. In the second workshop Graham first helped us with our drawing skills using charcoal and pencil concentrating on line, composition and perspective. This was followed by a demonstration of knife painting techniques in acrylic to create a picture of an old stone building. Members then tried these techniques in their own paintings of old stone structures. It was a very enjoyable, instructive workshop.

Grange Lecture Society In an illustrated lecture given on 27th January under the title ‘Great Forgers’ former lawyer and novelist Jim Williams told the stories behind some famous art forgeries before turning to literature and his own unique take on the celebrated publication in 1983 of the (as it turned out) fake Hitler diaries. By an uncanny coincidence Jim had nine months earlier published a first novel called ‘The Hitler Diaries’ whose plot involved the diaries being offered to a New York publishing house! On 10th February Mo Holland, entertainment organiser for Voyages of Discovery, returned to lecture on ‘The Arabian Peninsula’. The main focus of her informative and beautifully illustrated talk, given before a packed Victoria Hall, was on Oman and the Arab Emirates. After giving her audience a detailed insight into the history and geography, Mo showed how oil wealth and tourism have influenced the development of these most traditional of countries. Wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering returns on 10th March to give the final lecture of the season entitled ‘The Red Wolves of Ethiopia’. It will follow a short AGM. Proceedings begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Grange Freemasons Lodge members and their guests attended the 29th Annual Dinner and Boxing Evening at the Cumbria Grand Hotel on 16th January 2015 organised by the Group which once again proved a tremendous success. The dining room was filled to capacity with 226 diners who enjoyed a good meal and then settled down to watch 10 excellent bouts of boxing. The evening is expected to have raised in excess of £8,000 for charitable causes thanks to generous local sponsors and the diners support for an auction of sporting memorabilia and raffles. The Boxing Committee welcomes applications for small grants from local charities and organisers of community projects. Presentation of cheques takes place in the Summer at Barrow Masonic Hall when recipients are invited to attend to raise the profile of their charity or project.

Boxing Committee Chairman Gary Rogerson said: “It was a tremendous success. The food was excellent and the boxing probably the best we have had. We are grateful to Kendal Amateur Boxing Club and their Head Coach Alan Willoughby who have been responsible for arranging the bouts every year”

3 Parks Group The trees and shrubs for planting the site cleared adjoining the toilets in the Ornamental Gardens will be delivered before the end of February. We are also considering the purchase of a quantity of Daffodil and Snowdrop bulbs for planting in the newly established areas for naturalising in the autumn. At the meeting of the Group held in January we were disappointed to learn that following this summer's planting the District Council would no longer be providing an annual programme of planting bedding plants and bulbs in the walls of the Ornamental Gardens. We will obviously need to give consideration to this news as the walls are such a feature.Ron Shapland.

Newton and Field Broughton WI The meeting on 11th February was well attended and we welcomed four new members. We enjoyed a talk about Mr John Park about his family and their life long work in farming. Their establishment at Sizergh Farm, including the many interests held by different members of the family, was fascinating and all members of the WI can remember varied visits to enjoy farm walks, cups of tea and, of course, the chance to watch the milking process. The meeting on 11th March will be a talk about ‘Dunelm’, their establishment, work and development by Martin Morland. The next meeting will be held in Lindale Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.

Grange Fell Allotments Grange (Fell ) Allotment Society held its Annual General meeting on the 19th January at the Grange Hotel. The meeting was primarily intended to elect a new committee as the society has not had a functioning committee for a considerable time. The meeting was chaired by Bruno Guillion who has been carrying out the interim chairperson role.

From a total of 30 allotment holders, 21 voted for the election of a new committee. The following members were elected, and just to avoid any confusion we have three Ian’s on the committee! Plot numbers have been included which we hope will help allotment holders direct any queries they may have to committee members.

Chairman –Bruno Guillon (plot 3); Secretary Ian Huitson (plot 26); Treasurer Ian Lacey (Plot 2); Committee members Ian Pither (plot 9) and Jennifer Forsyth (plot 30) On behalf of the allotment holders the meeting gave an expression of appreciation to Bruno for assuming the interim chair role and for all his hard work over recent months in ensuring a new committee was elected.

Grange & District Art Society The weekly general painting sessions continued with the welcome return of Geoff Maskell sitting for the Portrait painters. Each year the Society holds two internal competitions for its members. Three members tied for the first place in the Millennium Competition! In the

Grange Rotary The Club sponsored a whole day of Defibrillator Training on the 17th February. Nearly a hundred people were given instruction by volunteers from The First Responders on how to assist in the case of an emergency situation. This was held at the Netherwood Hotel and both members of the public and staff from the hotel were shown how to use a defibrillator, and to give C.P.R. The club has also decided to make a donation to Medecines Sans Frontieres who are doing such sterling work in the area of Ebola. The club believes it is in the interest of us all for the outbreak to be brought under control as soon as possible. One of our contribution to our local community is in the sponsoring of the Rotakids Club overseen by Rotarian John Biddlestone. I understand there is a separate article on their progress in this magazine. And finally, a fun evening was arranged when a quiz was held with Rotarians pitting their wits against the local Lions Club.

Grange and District U3A At our January general meeting Brain Fuller entertained us with a presentation entitled ‘Island Hopping’, a superbly illustrated trip around the islands of north east England, Shetland, the Hebrides and St Kilda. A memorable travelogue looking at the flora and fauna of the islands. We held our third ‘cake and cuppa’ event at the Methodist Church Hall, Grange. These events provide an opportunity for new members to be welcomed to the U3A and to meet group co-ordinators and committee members. The cold and inclement weather has interfered with some of the activities of the outdoor groups. A number of the cycling and walking events have been cancelled leaving enthusiasts somewhat frustrated but the birdwatching group has had a successful start to the year with a notable trip to the southern shores of Morecambe Bay where geese a-plenty, golden plover, and four species of swan were amongst the birds spotted. Grange Ramblers On Wednesday 11th February, 14 ramblers set off from Sedgwick in cloudy but fine weather on a 5 mile circular walk. The route took us past the Lakeland Maze Farm before crossing over open pastures to Skettlegate. The walk then followed good paths and tracks through Eskrigg Wood to reach the Canal at Stainton Bridge for a short stop for lunch. The return route passed through the hamlet of Stainton before eventually crossing over the railway bridge to reach a quiet lane back to Sedgwick. Walk leader was Alec Bottomley. Grange Soroptomists Members held a candlelit vigil for the victims of the Peshawar school shooting and to show solidarity with their sister Soroptimists in Pakistan. Soroptimist International is an International organisation uniting

women around the world, working to improve the lives of women and girls. The education of girls is seen as particularly important to enable them to reach their full potential. Club members enjoyed a fascinating Stargazing evening at Castlehead Field Centre and are now much more knowledgeable. On Feb 14th a packed Victoria Hall rocked with the 50’s and 60’s Disco raising money for “Mary’s Meals” a charity providing a hot meal in school for chronically poor children in Malawi and other countries. This attracts children into school and helps them gain an education and a better future. The final total will be available shortly. Lower Holker Village Hall The Hall has a number of groups using its facilities: Badminton, Tai Chi, Keep Fit, Dancing, WI, Embroidery, Bingo, Bowling Club and the Parish Council. We also have regular Quiz Nights. We have rooms available at reasonable rates. If you are hosting a one-off celebration or wish to use the facilities on a regular basis, then get in touch. The Hall runs a 200 Club and numbers are still available. Membership is £1.00 a month, and draws are made each month. The Village Hall will be hosting nine artists from Green Door during the weekend of Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of March. Grange PROBUS Club On February 9th, Richard Johnson gave a talk on Safeguarding Family Assets. Richard is an inheritance planning practitioner from Cockermouth. He began by talking about the ambiguity of recent government legislation. He then talked about the pros and cons of putting property and other assets into a trust and mentioned that this option was something that went back to the days of the crusades. He concluded by explaining what is involved in giving power of attorney. PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome.
