ISSUE 284 - APRIL 15
A NO R W N SI IN D E
Grange now
Letter from the Editor Well it’s a busy one for the Easter edition. So much so that for the first time in Grange Now’s history, we’ve had to go up to 36 pages to fit everything in. A couple of other news items; with our new member of staff Grange Now are moving to a slightly bigger office round the corner. Our move will take place at the end of April - more details in the next issue.
Victoria Hall wins reprieve
From this month we are delivering to Arnside. Only 3 miles separates Arnside from Grange and, although 20 miles apart by road, we are closely tied communities. Who knows, if the footpath and cycleway across the viaduct ever becomes a reality, we could be even closer. As we go to press the budget speech has just been delivered. The gloves are now off as we head for the election. Make sure you are on the electoral register by 20th April to be able to vote in the General Election on 7th May.
When Grange Town Council met on 9th March, Councillor Tom Harvey confirmed that South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) will give funding for Victoria Hall for a further year.
Just a word of caution. There may be an article in this issue that’s exploiting the time honoured tradition of publications appearing on or around April the 1st. Apologies for this. In fact I may be in trouble!
Tom told Grange Now: "Securing funding for the Victoria Hall is great news but its only a short term fix. We'll continue to look at ways to make greater efficiencies in its running costs but also more appealing to a wider range of users to ensure its long term sustainability"
With the prom refurbished, including a new crazy golf course, and the holidays just around the corner, why not turn to the centre spread for activity ideas.
STOP PRESS - Grange Lido has won the Coastal heritage photo competition organised by English Heritage with more than 3,000 votes - come on Heritage Lottery Fund - you know you want to. There were pages of comments on the BBC Radio Cumbria facebook pages from voters who offered up many fond memories and/or a desire to see it reopened. What a fabulous asset we have here in Grange, and it has now beaten off all comers in this national competition.
Grange Information Centre We are pleased to let you know that our seven day opening times commenced on Monday March 9th. As always our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to help you.
Coastal Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt said: “I’m delighted Grange-over-Sands lido has won our coastal heritage photo competition. Lidos are such an important part of our heritage and as the only surviving lido in the north of England it is great we can recognise this important historic landmark in this way."
I am pleased to report that in our bid to provide an excellent Customer Service experience our Information Centre staff have recently completed the ‘Welcome to Morecambe Bay’ module of the ‘Welcome to Excellence’ training programme, which is the leading customer service training programme in the UK. It was great to see our mayor, Trish Thomas, show her enthusiasm for our service by participating in this training.
“I wish the council all the best in their continuing bid with the Heritage Lottery fund to restore this saltwater lido to its former glory.” Wishing one and all a very Happy Easter, from the Grange Now team.

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP
In March it was 6 years from when the Bank of England Base Rate was reduced to just 0.5% back in 2009. Nobody could foresee at that point that interest rates would stay so very low for such a long time.

Grange now | APRIL 2015 - Next deadline 17th April
The latest predictions are that interest rates will begin to rise towards the end of this year. In itself this is good news for savers although it is worth noting that we have seen predictions over the last 24 months of a rate rise being ‘around the corner’ which have not come to fruition. Such low inflation as seen presently only goes to put less pressure on policy makers increasing rates. Whilst a rate rise at some stage is inevitable it is disappointing news for savers that the medium term predictions are for interest rates to peak at no higher than 3% before beginning to fall again.
Bank of England Base Rate is a useful index for savers to measure savings rates against. Equally the FTSE 100 Index is a useful measure of stock market values. At the time of writing in early March the FTSE 100 Index was close to its peak seen in late 1999. There was a very useful article written in the Sunday Telegraph recently which talked about whether this means stock markets are good value or overvalued. Whilst only time will tell the consensus expert view is that the
two situations could not be more different. In late 1999 we were seeing the peak (and end) of the technology boom with the Price to Earnings ratio (PE ratio) of the FTSE 100 standing at a huge measurement of 30 times. The long term average of the FTSE 100 is approximately 17. The current measurement is 19 which suggests that the stock market is neither overvalued nor cheap but simply fair value. Equally interesting is that of the 100 companies which made up the FTSE 100 at the end of 1999 only 51 remain in the FTSE 100.
As the saying goes, you cannot compare two cars if you do not look under the bonnet!
Economically the main focus this year is likely to be the 7th May General Election.

Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside
We may not have much in the way of a sandy beach but we are fortunate enough to have a beautiful prom, with activities galore. This is in no small way thanks to a group of tireless volunteers who have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes, not only to raise money, but to pick up spades and shovels and get stuck in. At the time of going to press winter maintenance works were in full swing on the Recreation Park. A spokesperson for the Promenade Recreation Group told Grange Now: “ This development work is taking place thanks to some very kind donations from; Charity & Co, the Neighbourhood Forum, SLDC, Local Projects Fund and a private donation of £1,000 along with the income raised from last year’s day and season ticket sales. We would like to thank you all and everyone who came along to use the site in 2014.” Work is currently underway to, not only repair the hut and replace internal fencing round the tennis and basketball courts, but to build a fantastic new 9 hole crazy golf course, based on a system used in Filey, North Yorkshire. Instead of wood, huge ropes are used to form the sides of each hole which the committee hope will be much more durable. A stonemason is building some pretty amazing structures to test your golfing skills.
On the bowling green, Lindale Bowling Club members Lorna and Stephen Schofield from Grange were putting in a bit of practice ahead of the new season. They told us: ”This area looks so much lighter now the trees have been cut down. We take advantage of the £5 day ticket in the summer as it’s great value” Several younger members of the community were enjoying the now
completed skateboard park, while further along the prom, Helen Whittaker, her daughter Sarah and her granddaughter, all from Kendal, were enjoying the outdoor fitness equipment and a rare glimpse of the sunshine. Meanwhile on the newly refurbished playground, which has also benefitted from a spruce up and repairs, Grandparents from Morecambe were being pushed on the swings by their 4 year old grandson! They declined to be named but said they often travelled through to Grange by train to enjoy the prom. The Promenade Recreation Group would like to say that that all of this wouldn’t have happened without volunteers, “who are vital to the success of the project in keeping the Promenade Recreation Park open and welcoming. Please help us to continue this work by offering to volunteer at the recreation park this summer for just three hours a month April to September. It would make a very big difference, and the more the merrier.” If you would like to volunteer please contact Judith on 33706.
For the second year Day Tickets and Season Tickets will be available to buy. A Day Ticket costs just £5 for up to 2 adults and 2 children, and a season ticket costs £25, again for up to 2 adults and 2 children. This is

The new crazy golf course and other facilities will re-open in time for the school Easter holidays on 27th March. Prom Art starts again on 26th April
The new season of the incredibly popular Prom Art starts on the last Sunday in April - April 26th - and will, as usual, have a wide selection of arts and crafts stalls stretching from Bayley Lane to the Lido. A spokesperson for PromArt told Grange Now: “There will be some newcomers as well as many old favourites displaying all of their very high-quality work. So don't miss the opportunity for an hour's free enjoyment browsing, discussing and buying! The events take place on the last Sunday each month up to and including September.”

FINALLY! Nude bathing comes to Grange
Low Wood No Wood
cardboard boat race
Grange Now can confirm that an unscheduled town council meeting took place last month. Due to the sensitivity of the subject matter the meeting was held late at night with some reports suggesting it was just gone 8 o’clock, but Grange Now believe it was very nearly quarter past. In a unanimous and unprecedented decision Grange Town Council voted for nudist bathing on the prom. Civic Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas told Grange Now, “nudist bathing is making a real impact in other areas and I think we should embrace it.” Councillor Thomas recently visited Llaprifoo in South Wales where the dutch leader of the town council
That sinking feeling
If you’re up for an amazing day out, having loads of fun and laughs, raising money for charity and ultimately sinking and getting very wet, then you need to get involved in the annual Cardboard Boat Race (CBBR). May 16th is the date for this year’s annual Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race which will take place at the Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel Marina, from 10.00am and runs throughout the day. The event, sponsored by Progression Solicitors, raises money for the Lake District Calvert Trust. Each year the event has become bigger and better. In 2014 over £4,000 was raised for the Calvert Trust and Anthony Smith, Director at Progression Solicitors said: “This year we would like to beat that figure and the way to do that is to increase the number of participants, so we are working hard to get the word out there and encouraging everyone to get involved”. Go online to www.cardboardboatrace. co.uk and see the wacky boats which were entered last year and all the crazy stuff that goes on during the event, and full rules and regulations etc.
there, Donn Giverdamm said: “alstublieft, spreek langzamer? Waar is het toilet? Spreekt u Engels?” which Grange Now believes translates as: “Could you talk a bit slower? Where are the toilets? Do you speak English?” Perhaps those most willing to get into the spirit of things are the local WI groups who are feverishly knitting ‘bag-o-tackles’.
Who bares all? (photo credit Loof Lirpa)
They will come in four different sizes, small to extra large, and a donation from each bag-o-tackle will go towards the Victoria Hall fund.
The inauguration march, led by Cllrs, Harvey and Thomas, will start at the railway station end of the prom on 1st April. See you there!
With a little help from our friends ...or should we say with help from our ‘little’ friends. Never ones to stand still, the ingenious crew at Bay Search and Rescue have found a new way to attract more visitors in facebook and Twitter. They have created a lego version of themselves complete with Hagglund all-terrain vehicles and an airboat, just like the full-size volunteer rescuers. Spokesman for BSAR, Mike Davis told Grange Now: "The team has great support on social media, we've got profiles on Facebook and Twitter, and a YouTube channel, as well as sharing our pictures on Flickr, Instagram and Tumblr - we're passionate about making the work
"Smoke me a kipper! I'll be home in time for breakfast!"
of the Team accessible to as many people as possible, as well as engaging with the other emergency services online too. As a team we're quite technically minded - we have to be with our unique
all-terrain rescue vehicles - and maybe that's why the idea of using Lego seemed like such a good one!” The team hope to use the figures to help them educate people about the
dangers of quicksand and to make them more aware in water environments. Mike went on to say: “there's much more to come. The Lego is a fun and, given the Team's distinctive orange branding, it's visually impactive - I think it will help people to understand the huge variety of work that the team does: quicksand rescue, flood and swiftwater rescue, missing person searches and support to the fire service at wildfire incidents." Jack Hill planning application is refused
The corner of Jack Hill Allithwaite
Nevertheless, following some further heartfelt submissions by local residents, the committee discussed the whole matter in great detail for perhaps an hour and a half. Finally, after many misgivings on both sides of the argument (including a proposal ‘to grant’, which failed) there came a proposal ‘to refuse’. This came on a complex issue to do with the developer’s failure to vary the layout of the affordable housing, as previously requested by the committee (which had been essentially ignored) and continuing doubts about the surface water drainage and potential run-off to Beckside, a flood-risk area. There were 13 committee members present, Acting Chair, and 1 A6 excluding gardentheflyer:Layout they voted 6 in favour of refusal, 6 against refusal, with one abstention. Refusal was then confirmed by the Acting Chair’s casting vote.

Arnside to Argentina
Alison Bloxham will travel from her home in Arnside to Argentina in August, to once again support the athletes in the World Transplant Games. Alison, owner and Practice Principal of Kendal Physiotherapy Centre and their outlying surgery in Grange, has been the GB Team Physio for the past 14 years. Everyone taking part in the Games has undergone a transplant, which perhaps makes their achievements even more amazing.
Everyone is a true winner
As Alison told Grange Now: “ The Games put a global spotlight on the need for organ donation and these amazing successes show how organ donation can transform lives. Our elite athletes are the third largest British sports team (after the Olympians and Paralympians) and all the competitors have received a lifesaving organ transplant – kidney, liver, lungs, heart or bone marrow. Just being able to compete against world class competition having been given a second chance of life means that everyone is truly a winner, whatever position they finish the competition in.” Alison went on to tell us that: “Unfortunately, the Games do not receive any official government funding so all of our funding has to be raised through charitable donations. This year’s World Games
costs will be around £2000 for flight and accommodation and this must be raised by both the athletes and volunteer helpers. Any assistance that can be given is very much appreciated by all the Team, and I have established a JustGiving page to assist in raising these funds. The web address for this is www. justgiving.com/Alison-Bloxham1 where you will find all the details of how to donate to this amazing cause. Donations can also be made at Kendal Physiotherapy Centre by cash or cheque payable to Transplant Sport UK.”
Our picture shows a heart transplant athlete called Kaylee Davidson-Olley who had just won her first gold medal at the Games having been competing since she was a young child. She was the world’s youngest heart transplant back in 1987 at only 5 months old.

Podiatrists specialise in the diagnosis and management of foot and lower leg disorders with a particular focus on injuries associated with foot and lower limb function and provide walking and running assessments to investigate posture.
Following the assessment, you may be given advice regarding stretching and strengthening, footwear and targeted treatment. Often orthotics may be prescribed as a long term treatment. The most suitable orthotics for your individual needs can be discussed with the podiatrist following your assessment. These will depend on your biomechanics, your hobbies and activities, and your footwear.

There are many different ways in which teeth can be moved or straightened, with wires and brackets, fixed or removable appliances. However, due to advances in 3D printing equipment, laser scanners and computer aided design, there is a new way to straighten your teeth invisibly. This is perfect for someone that wants their teeth straightened but does not want anyone to know that they are in treatment. This aesthetically pleasing method of moving teeth also has the added advantage of being removable for eating, drinking and special occasions. Each positioner is designed
to fit over the teeth and apply gentle forces to gradually move the teeth. The positioners are worn until they feel passive, usually around 14 days. You then move onto the next positioner that has further movements built in. This step by step approach ensures that you are only applying gentle forces to the teeth which is good orthodontic practice and minimises any discomfort when wearing the positioner. Here at Oasis Dental Care we are delighted to be able to offer SmileTru to our patients. Call us today on 015395 34554 to book your free of charge consultation with a dentist.
For total relaxation
There is a new clinic at the Nutwood Practice: The Relaxation Room. Catherine offers a blend of holistic health treatments, including massage and reflexology, from facials to foot treatments, and any aches and pains in between.
It’s a whole body experience. Catherine, who has previous experience of working alongside GPs and NHS Practitioners, told Grange Now: “It’s great to be back in a medical setting".
"Understandably, people can get confused with all the different approaches for Complementary Health, what they are called, what they do.” Holistic means as a practitioner Catherine focusses on the whole person, mind and body, emotional and physical. Working on the body can ease the mind. Catherine currently operates a clinic every Friday afternoon and if there is enough demand she will also open a clinic on Thursdays. Taster sessions start at £10, with longer sessions costing between £35 - £45, depending on duration and products used.
To see what others think of The Relaxation Room see the wonderful reviews on Tripadvisor.
Allithwaite Running Club isn’t standing still. A spokesperson told Grange Now: “we are continuing to grow; we are getting regular members building the Monday and Thursday evening runs and have added various weekend runs during the winter. Our recent runs at Cartmel have proved very popular and gained the attention of over 5,000 Facebook users via the Lakeland Trails page!”
Keep on running
The group meets at the Community Centre in Allithwaite at 6.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays. “We are a small, friendly club open to anybody interested in running, whether new to the sport or more experienced. We enjoy a mixture of road and trails both locally and further afield. Please check out our facebook page or just turn up at one of our meetings.”
The group is keen to attract new members and said people of all abilities are welcome: “New runner or unsure about ability? Don’t worry – we’ve all been there in the past! We’ll encourage you to do your best; new members over the past year have run 10 km races, or the fantastic 5km Saturday Parkruns at Fell Foot, Windermere at 9 am, where you can race against your own times or just enjoy the atmosphere.
Keeping up the pace Members of Allithwaite Running Club
We’re not just about races – there was a big turnout for the Christmas pub run! We enjoy the social side of running as well - members marshalled the Cartmel Sticky Toffee race and enjoyed a meal afterwards, and there is already talk of a midsummer’s event – watch this space. Successful races over the past year have involved members
running in the Kendal 10km series, plenty of Lakeland Trails events, and the Kendal Mountain Festival Trail Run in November, with crowds cheering finishers through the middle of Kendal. This year’s plans include various races, but most importantly to enjoy the freedom of running in the most beautiful part of the country with great company!”

People & Places Lindale and Witherslack
This month Grange Now takes a look at the villages of Lindale and Witherslack. Linked by the A590, and sited on the northeastern side of Morecambe Bay, they have much in common. Their rural landscapes are dominated by rocky ridges, valleys and low-lying agricultural land, which draw many visitors interested in their geology and wildlife, while their strong communities revolve around their popular and industrious schools and the church. Both villages serve the local population with a shop and pub – or two pubs, in Lindale’s case! – and are home to a number of thriving businesses.
Mountain bike challenge
Dean Barwick Primary School in Witherslack is using pedal power to drive its latest fund raising event.
The fifth annual Dean Barwick Mountain Bike Challenge will be held on Saturday 4 July 2015 and promises to be as fun and popular as the past four. Those up for the challenge can choose between timed mountain trail biking routes of 25km or 40km. The specially designed courses use bridleways, off-road tracks and exclusive trails on private land, which will be available for this day only, making it a unique way to experience biking through the area. The event is one in a series being held to raise money for a range of important improvements to the school, which include a new Key Stage 1 classroom building,
redevelopment of the foundation stage outdoor area (including the construction of a giant sandpit), and development in the Key Stage 2 playground. Under-16 riders are welcome with an accompanying adult. Visit www.deanbarwick. cumbria.sch.uk for further details and to enter.

We have held demonstration days and working days in Yewbarrow Woods and Jemmy Fell. These days have included coppicing, charcoal burning, felling, processing and extraction using horse loggers. As part of this work, ancient woodlands have been brought back into management by thinning and temporary fencing to minimise deer browsing of regenerating saplings. Tim’s column
There have been a couple of reports out in the past month that have an impact on us in this area. The first was the Kirkup Report into the failings in maternity care at the Morecambe Bay Hospital Trust. You will have already read and heard a great deal about this report, what I wanted to add was that reading through it when it came out was deeply, deeply upsetting. Learning that at least 11 babies and one mother died as a result of the issues at the hospital in Barrow is simply tragic. That it then took eleven years to get to the point where the failings were fully investigated and reported on is unforgivable. It is bad enough that families lost their children unnecessarily, but that they then had to fight so hard against the system to get to the truth of the causes of the failings while more babies were undoubtedly put at risk is unforgivable and something everyone must feel ashamed about. I will support the families involved, and any others who want to contact me, to ensure that all of the recommendations of the report are enacted and that this is never ever allowed to happen again anywhere. The other report was less clear and not quite so emotionally charged but still upsetting. This was from the Northern Rail Electrification Task Force looking at the prioritisation for the electrification of lines in the North of England. The report acknowledges the need for the electrification of the Furness Line and that doing this will bring undoubted economic benefits to our area,
which is something I have been arguing with ministers for some time now. However, it puts the project into the third tier of lines needing electrification, meaning that they are not recommending progressing with the scheme until the “medium term”. This report will now feed into a major government review of transport plans across the whole of the North of England and I need to look into what the recommendation means in reality and what can be done to move the Line up at least one tier and ideally two to be amongst those that will be first on the list for electrification. As we know, from our successful campaign to get the Lakes Line electrified, we need to be prepared for the odd set back and look to see how we can overcome them. The case for the electrification of the Furness Line is a strong one and one that I will continue to fight for until we see the first electrically powered train travelling across the viaduct at Arnside. As ever, if I can help you with these or any other issues then please do get in touch. I can be emailed at tim@timfarron. co.uk or you can phone us on 01539 723403 or, if you see this before the 28th March, I am holding one of my regular surgeries at the Victoria Hall in Grange between 10.00am and 11.00am on that day. Thanks for your support Tim

Mayor’s Report
Earlier this month, I was very pleased to be asked to cut the ribbon and declare the wonderful new Health Centre for both Nutwood and Peninsula Surgeries well and truly open. Jackie and I were also lucky enough to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch afterwards and an opportunity to meet and talk with some of the staff. The building, while seeming immense compared with what we had previously been used to, really is fit for purpose and should continue to be so well into the future, despite the rapid increase in the population that new development within the town will bring. I would like to thank all the staff, in whatever their capacity, for all the efforts they put in to ensure that the changeover for patients went as smoothly as could be desired. I owe you all an apology too! In my last month’s Report in Grange Now I stated that the next Councillor Drop

In/Outreach at the Library would be on March 13th. I should have said Saturday March 14th from 10am until 12 noon. I am really sorry if this led to any confusion. It was just caused by simple error – I had the wrong date written in my diary. I can only say ‘Sorry’ and plead human error – I am after all only human!
As spring slowly does begin to show in the trees and hedgerows I look around the town and realise yet again how lucky we are to live in this part of the country, and in particular in Grange over Sands. Our parks and gardens, the numerous trees and the amazing view across the bay are just some of the things to be appreciated every day. It is thus a real shame, and I use the word shame purposely, that there are still people within our community who not only drop litter in our lovely town and expect the rubbish fairy to pick it up but there are some who do not clean up after their dogs. This is appalling and those involved

should be totally ashamed. If you take on the responsibility of owning a dog you take the responsibility of clearing up after it too. As part of my work as a Councillor I have recently been talking to a number of visually impaired people. We were discussing the hazards involved in getting around the town. I expected them to complain about the uneven footways, thoughtless parking on pavements or speeding traffic, but no! The biggest hazard as far as they were concerned was dog mess. So please, if you are one of the minority who walk off and leave it for someone else to tread in, have a thought for others, AND CLEAR IT UP. Thank you. A day in the life series
Katie to the rescue
A day in the life of North West Air Ambulance Senior Pilot Neil Airey
Neil Airey has been a pilot for thirty-eight years, the past 14 have been with the Blackpool-based North West Air Ambulance, and is employed by Bond Air Services, which have been providing helicopters for the charity since 1999. Neil was born in Kendal, grew up in Ulverston, and now lives with his wife Heather in a village just outside the town. He flies regularly with two paramedics who are also from Cumbria: Sarah Graham from Kendal and Phil Harrison from Keswick.
Neil comments: “From a young age I decided I was going to be a pilot, and I learnt words like elevator and rudder before I knew my alphabet. It’s all thanks to my dad, Bill, who lives at Greenodd, as he was the British national radio control team member back in the early 1960s”.
All in a day’s work
“I work a 10 hour day, which starts at 7.00am. The first half hour we check the helicopters and get them out of the hangar, complete paperwork and brief staff. Then the phone starts ringing, with incidents to attend. On average, we carry
out five missions a day. Depending on weather and fuel, we also do missions back-to-back.” “Once the siren goes, it galvanises the team. Coordinates of the location to which we need to fly are taken and written on flight suits, medication is prepared, and the right crew assembled – some jobs will need a doctor as well as a pilot and paramedic. Then, it’s helmets on, final safety checks for the aircraft, and off to the scene. From when the phone rings to when the job is confirmed, the crew can be airborne within four minutes.” “When flying, I have responsibility for navigating. On the way to the incident, I have a paramedic to my left who has been trained on an aircrew course and can help me navigate. Once we get to the incident, the paramedic becomes patient-orientated so it is then a single-pilot operation.”

NW Air Ambulance is a charity that relies totally on the support of community fundraising and partners - the aircraft and pilots receive no government funding. Cumbria is a key area covered by the charity, and in 2014 380 incidents in the county made up 15% of total missions. The most common call-outs were medical, traffic collisions and sports/leisure. The public help in a variety of ways to keep the helicopters flying. 71,880 people are signed up to the charity’s lottery, hundreds of people hold fundraising events, thousands of people donate each year, and many stock donations are received for its retail stores. Volunteers provide much needed support by being a presence on the ground: raising the charity’s profile, supporting its office and retail teams, developing new initiatives and fundraising events, and by providing valuable skills and experience.

How can the readers of Grange Now help?
“Our Blackpool crew cover an area from Carlisle to Crewe, and we are often called to incidents that land ambulances can’t reach. In Cumbria I have landed at Rydal Water, Helvellyn, Langdale and the waterfront at Windermere.” “Once we get to the scene, paramedics assess the condition of the patient and decide on the best hospital: Carlisle, Whitehaven, Barrow, Lancaster or Preston. Patients are taken to Preston if it’s a major trauma and Blackpool or Carlisle if they need a cardiac centre.” “We fly to the hospital at an altitude of 1,200 – 1,500 feet above the ground and are flat out at 130 knots (145 mph). If we are within the Carlisle to Crewe area we can be on a hospital helipad within ten minutes of leaving an incident. Once the patient is at the hospital, we replenish equipment and call ambulance control. At the end of the day, the helicopter is put to bed, its rotors tied down for the night, and the team can head home for rest and recovery before another busy day.”

As preparations continue to launch the Bay Cycle Way in June this year, staff from Morecambe Bay Partnership will be available at an information evening on Wednesday 15 April from 5 to 7 pm in the Victoria Hall, Grange-overSands. The Bay Cycle Way will be a fabulous, mostly level 200km long route from Walney Island, beyond Barrow, to Glasson Dock, south of Lancaster. We already have the famous Walney to Wear bike route passing through Grange - in fact it goes right past the door of the Grange Now office. How fabulous then to see the new Bay Cycle Way add to the list of local cycling opportunities for both visitors and locals, although as we saw on the letters page in the last issue, controversy surrounds the choice of route. Should it be along the promenade, through the centre of Grange or both - time will tell how this is resolved. Even more exciting would have been to use the launch as the impetus to finally open up the connection across the estuary from Arnside to Grange. The towns are only separated by a 3 mile gap but a 20 mile drive is required to make the same journey. The crossing by rail has been in place
A Bridge Too Far?
County Matters
I was contacted last year with a request for a specialised seat for young children who are unable to use the normal swing seats in the children’s play area on the promenade. This has now been installed and I am sure this will enhance the facilities which already exist on this site. I was able to find funding from the County Council to provide this latest piece of equipment for the benefit of both residents and visitors.
Spring is nearly upon us and I hope you will join me in thanking all the gardening volunteers that make sure our promenade area always looks pristine for the season. Also thanks to the volunteers who will be shortly manning the recreational area so that we can all enjoy the facilities on the promenade. Regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.
Neighbourhood Plan – Yes, We Can! Thank-you to the 1015 residents who took the time to send their vote in - a remarkable response . Your votes have been counted and 97% said go ahead, so now we can.
Could a walking / cycling link benefit both towns?
since Victorian times and was traditionally walked by locals on Christmas day.
A recent comment made was that it would be cheaper to rebuild the existing viaduct than adapt it for walking and cycling to be allowed alongside the railway. Has anyone thought about or costed an additional bridge, to create an iconic attraction and experience that would benefit both towns for decades to come. The campaign for the crossing was started by ATOG - the Arnside to Grange Support Group with
the aim of creating the walk and cycleway across the viaduct for the benefit of all. The creation of the walk/ cycleway would be the talk of the area and a real boost to tourism. There are a range of other activities around the Bay this Spring and into the Summer - oral history training, beach cleans, heritage events and more. There are two beach cleans due to take place in Arnside, Wednesday 22nd April 10am - 12noon and Wednesday 13th May at the same time - please check the website for full details www.morecambebay.org.uk
For more details about the voting please see the Town Council website at www. grangeoversandstowncouncil. gov.uk. This is great news for the Town and the Steering Group. We are still in the early stages of developing the Plan and recently had a very useful workshop with our consultants from PLANet. We looked at what makes Grange so unique and started a list of special buildings, landmarks and features. And we marked up some maps to show many of the green spaces in and around Grange Town Centre which residents feel are very special.

Spring tides at Arnside
Arnside has one of the largest tidal ranges in the area. On the 22nd February it had a height of 10.7 metres, the biggest I have experienced so far.
Easter Sunday - 5th April A delicious menu for all the family including lots of choice, vegetarian dishes and a great selection of dishes for the youngsters

Kayak in turbulent water at Arnside viaduct, by Will Tranter The bore, a wave that develops at the head of the tide as it enters the confined estuary, is a common attraction to watch in its own right surfing it in a sea kayak is something else! Unfortunately, on this occasion the southerly wind had the effect of flattening the bore, making it impossible to surf. As the bore reaches Arnside viaduct the high tide, constrained into narrow channels by the pillars, creates
incredibly turbulent water – and a fantastic sea kayaking playground for practicing rough water skills. Getting from one end of the viaduct to the other without losing too much ground is a great challenge, and one that you certainly feel! This is an advanced trip, not for the faint-hearted. The Perfect Plot
As a new feature for 2015, we intend to run an allotment column each month. There are quite a few allotments in the area and if you have a plot and would like to share your tips and advice with other amateur gardeners, please get in touch. Our first article comes from Ian Huitson, Secretary of Grange (Fell) Allotments. “Our allotment is a relatively new community of 30 plots, it has taken some time to work the plot to get them ready for planting. The plots are the same size, but shapes and styles vary as everyone has their own individual style of planting. Most of the plot holders have erected a shed with guttering to collect rainwater in water butts as there is no connected mains supply. There is a mixture of the more traditional vegetable plots, growing in rows, and some have been given over to raised beds. Some have a focus on soft fruit and small fruit trees alongside vegetables, we also have some beautiful flower beds. The different approaches lead to lots of conversation about what works well and how to get the best from each plot. This year has seen one plot holder growing vines and managing a small crop of grapes, we are all looking forward to the allotments first vintage wine!! We have elected a new chairman Bruno, during the coming season Bruno is keen to focus on tips and ideas about how get the most from the plots throughout the year producing in all seasons rather than just a summer glut. Some have been cropping Swede, sprouts, leek and Swiss chard during the winter months, and last year saw a good crop of purple sprouting broccoli planted in the late summer to crop in March to May. One plot holder

is trying for a crop of celeriac over the next few months after another’s disappointment last year so here’s hoping.
The allotments require collective action to maintain the communal areas and paths and to make the most of the available land. From February work parties will be meeting every two months on the last Saturday of the month, the work in February is to check all boundary fences to ensure they continue to be rabbit and badger proof! In addition some work is required on the car park with remedial action to keep it in good condition. These work parties are a good social opportunity to meet up with each other, as often working on the allotment garden is a very quiet and peaceful pastime and we are lucky to be in a very scenic, wonderful location, with sometimes no more than 6 or 7 plot holders on site at the same time.

The new Scout Troop is now operational on Monday evenings working in parallel with the Wednesday troop. Vacancies exist in both troops for boys and girls aged 10.5 to 14. We also have two Beaver Colonies which meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, again for boys and girls and from 6 to 8 years old. As a number of Beavers have recently moved up to Cubs, there are also vacancies in each of these colonies.
We are fortunate to have recently recruited a number of new leaders, but we could always do with more help. Working with youngsters can be most enjoyable and rewarding while also making a major contribution to the local community.
Should anyone be interested in becoming a leader or enrolling a child in any of the sections, please contact the Group Scout Leader- Barbara Leader on 33270. Our Base which is on Cartmel Racecourse is very heavily used, four nights each week by Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and often a weekends by visiting groups who book the building for various activities. Currently we are looking for a volunteer to undertake minor repairs and maintenance. This would not be a regular commitment but as and when required. Thanks to the work of Neil Brooksbank and helpers, the building is in excellent condition and we wish to keep up this standard. Again if anyone is interested, please contact Barbara Leader.

Growing Well is a mental health charity and organic producer using horticulture as therapy. They are based here at Low Sizergh Farm and their organic principles recognise the direct connection between health and how the food we eat is produced. In March they had a visit from minister Norman Lamb and flagged up the lack of funding and attention that mental health services are given. As a charity that is reliant on donations for the majority of

ARTS & MUSIC
La Serenata
Featured artist:
The first of St Paul’s seasonal lunchtime concerts will be on Wednesday, 29th April given by La Serenata musical trio featuring Charles Edmondson on piano, mezzo-soprano Wendy Sharrock and David Edmonds on flute. The concert is entitled “A Musical Interlude of Pieces Written for Celebrations and Remembrances”. Their programme, which will contain many well-known pieces, will be very varied and will explore the theme “hatches, matches and dispatches”. The concert will also include a piece specially written for a golden wedding celebration. Lunch will be served from 12 noon and the hour long concert will commence at 1 pm. Admission, to include lunch, is £8 and is payable at the door.
Illustrator Piers Harper
As with our two previous featured artists, illustrator, Piers Harper, does not hail from around here but like many before him he came, he saw, he stayed. Grange Now asked him if he had always wanted to be an artist and he told us: “After graduating from Sheffield University, I worked at an arts centre in Hornchurch, Greater London. The manager, realising my growing interest in illustration, offered me the chance to have an exhibition there. This gave me the opportunity to build up a portfolio to show to publishers.” We asked how his publishing career began and he told us: “I think I visited every children's book publisher in London during the next two years, and it was the last one that commissioned me. The book was an animal alphabet in five languages - English, French, German, Spanish and Italian - and was written by Patricia Borlenghi. (This book is currently having a major revamp and is due to be re-issued in 2016 with completely new pictures.) Getting your first book published seems to be the hardest part in many ways; once you've broken that barrier it gets a bit easier to get others printed. I now have had children's books issued by many publishers, including: Walker

New Rope String Band - The Farewell Tour Manic minstrels, The New Ropes, will be calling in at Arnside Educational Institute for an evening of hilarity and Python-esque absurdism spliced with beautiful acoustic music from various world traditions, in a precision-honed yet uproarious performance as part of their Farewell Tour. The New Rope String Band have come to the end of their tether. The sheer strain of spreading joy around the world for more than 25 years as Old and New Rope has proved too much. Audiences’ laughter muscles have been stretched and
Westmorland Orchestra
Saturday 14th March The excellent concert presented by the Westmorland Orchestra as part of the Westmorland Music Festival deserved better support. Given that the three works on the programme – by Beethoven, Brahms and Mendelssohn – were from the mainstream orchestral repertoire, the number of empty seats in the Westmorland Hall was disappointing.

have to sharpen it) and then use an ink dip pen, watercolour paint and chalk pastels to build it up and fill in the detail. But I also enjoy working digitally and love the freedom and precision that it offers.” Piers is currently working on several projects, including a book aimed at parents and young children visiting the Lake District. This is devised and written by Bonnie Quantz and is due to be published later this year.

My main area of work is illustrating (and sometimes writing) children's picture books, but I also work for educational and magazine publishers as well as games manufacturers. The most popular book I have worked on is ‘Snow Bear’, selling from Japan to the U.S.A., and leading to a series of books, greetings cards and a soft toy. It also won the picture book category of the Sheffield Children's Book Awards. My favourite way of working is to loosely sketch with a pencil (preferably propelling so I don't

But, before these ageing folk-cabaret artistes go their separate ways, heading for new and exciting theatrical and musical horizons, they have decided The concert began with a confident performance of Mendelssohn’s stormy Hebrides Overture. The players captured the brooding atmosphere of the work very effectively with the lower strings producing a rich tone in their melodic line. Throughout, the ensemble playing was tight with lovely expressive playing in the quieter sections and impressive climaxes. In Brahms Piano Concert No.2, the players were joined by soloist, Ian Buckle. This is a huge work, demanding great strength from the soloist who needs to balance his part with the sound of a full orchestra playing fortissimo at

Finally came Beethoven’s seventh symphony. The energy and volume of sound required makes this a very demanding work for an orchestra and it is to the great credit of players and conductor that the Westmorland achieved this. Among particular highlights were the sustained crescendo at the beginning of the slow movement, the many woodwind solo passages, so expertly played, and the energy released in the finale. Many thanks to Clive Walkley for this review

New film club comes to Grange Many films contain a social, moral or ethical message. Some have a thread of faith and spirituality running through them, and can raise challenging questions.
FilmClub42 provides a forum where all these issues can be explored. Meeting every other month at 7pm in the Keg and Kitchen on the first Thursday of the month (i.e. 7th May, 2nd July, 3rd September), FilmClub42 will show a mainstream film and afterwards, for those who wish to, there will be a short discussion for about 30 minutes of the issues raised. The Club is hosted by the United Reformed Church, Methodist and Anglican ministers in Grange. All are welcome; people of all faiths, those of none, and those exploring. Entry is free and refreshments for the evening can be purchased at the Keg and Kitchen. To comply with licensing regulations we cannot freely name the film, but details can be seen at the Keg and Kitchen or email [filmclub42@yahoo.co.uk] to join the FilmClub42 e-mailing list and receive details. We can say, however, that the first film stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, and explores themes of anger, loss, justice, faith and forgiveness.

Currently on display at the wonderful gallery are works from Heather Gillespie and Ian Parker. Heather is an award winning designer and maker who specialises in engraving on to glass using diamond, stone and copper wheels, a technique which is no longer taught at any UK establishment. She returned to Cumbria in 2009 after living and working in the Czech Republic where time was spent refining her skills as a glass engraver.Heather has worked with some of the most prestigious brands such as Calvin
Klein and Nokia and her work is extensive, from making unique pieces for clients to tableware, candle holders, reed diffusers and Christmas decorations. A new subject 'Cumbria' is the theme for Heather's latest works, inspired by the changing seasonal colours of the Lake District and its rugged mountains, based on the landscape of Cumbria this has been a challenge. Grange Now’s newest recruit, Lorena Keating, attended the first night of Grange and District’s Operatic Society’s, ‘The King and I’. This is the first time she has seen the Society in action and this is her review. We were first greeted by Anna and her son, Louis played by Samantha Grundy and Tom Shepherd who are both extremely talented with fantastic singing voices. The story was told incredibly well and kept the audience enticed throughout. Several of the scenes were met by a grinning audience as we delighted in the dancing and singing. One such scene was that of the King being taught to dance by Anna, as well as the scenes of the youngsters dancing when a slave tries to escape the King. The young children who performed in the play deserve massive congratulations for learning their lines
so perfectly and performing so well. The scene featuring the song 'Getting to Know You' with Anna, the wives and the children was really emotive and excellently done. The young actor and actress who played Lun Tha and Tuptim (Ben Lewis and Charlotte Payne) performed their parts brilliantly and portrayed real emotion between two young lovers. Their rendition of 'We Kiss in a Shadow' was fantastic. The team behind the production should be highly praised for the outstanding appearances of the set which were simply amazing, as too were the costumes. They were perfectly suited to the characters of the play, the outfits and cultures of Siam, and made the story come to life even more.
The play lasted a considerable time, and I can imagine the kids were extremely tired by the end of the week. It was a very enjoyable performance and I praise all of the people involved in the overall production! I went home ‘whistling a happy tune!’

CHURCH NEWS
An evening of music and celebration The Lakes Gospel Choir is one of the fastest growing choirs in Cumbria. From humble beginnings in the South Lakes in 2003, the choir, which is based in Bowness-on-Windermere, now numbers about 80 enthusiastic members. The choir's growth is not just in numbers, but increasingly in its ministry of worship in song, and in its reputation for excellence in performing gospel songs, many of which have been made famous by the award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. In 2013, the choir released its highly regarded first album, ‘Moving Mountains’. The choir will be performing at St.Mary’s Church in Allithwaite on
St Paul’s, Grange After becoming accustomed to an unadorned church during Lent, we appreciate all the more the beauty of the church flower displays that are on show for Easter. Individual members of St Paul’s congregation are responsible for all the window floral arrangements and visitors are welcomed into church to view the displays which are expected to last until the 17th April. There was a large gathering at St Paul’s for the open meeting to introduce the two architects who have submitted preliminary plans for the re-ordering of the church. Both architects presented their proposals and ideas and were able to answer questions from the floor. A lively discussion followed as to

As I write this, we are about half way through the Lent Course, which is meeting in five locations on different days and times. This has been received in a positive way, and we are all learning from it, and from each other. Lent Lunches are on Fridays, and each week has seen more people there than before. Grange Methodist Church At the ‘3 T’s Meeting’ at the church on Thursday 5th March, we welcomed Maurice Steele, the retired sheep farmer from Eskdale, well known for his wonderful slide shows.
Starting with the ice age, he went through to present time, comparing differences, i.e. modern travel, candle light to electricity, etc. Women’s Network meeting had the previous President Marion Briddock, describing her journey.
The next meeting is an Easter Service, when we have the previous minister, Rev Eileen Sambrook, from the URC church to speak to us.

I felt Lent got off to a good start on Ash Wednesday, with a well-attended morning Mass, distribution of ashes and Stations of the Cross. The evening mass and ashes was a more sedate affair, but all in all – a promising start for the caterpillar to develop into the butterfly – "Come back to me" – as Joel said! I'm sure many of us will have enjoyed a trip down the A590 lately!! One would have thought in this technological age, something more driver-considerate could have been organised. However, all things come to an end! But when?!

The ladies of Grange Network entertained those from around the district, for a joint meeting. Margaret Newrick, President, presided at the business session in the morning. After lunch, Angela Mills from Capenwray Hall Bible School, spoke. Her topic was ‘Running on Empty’. Here, she described her life before she committed it to Jesus Christ, and spoke of the difference He had made. Thanks were expressed to ladies of Grange Church for providing hot drinks, and afternoon tea for everyone. The Methodist Church in Grange had also hosted a Lenten lunch of soup and rolls, and over £240 was donated for Christian Aid.

St Mary’s, Allithwaite There has been a lot happening at St Mary’s over recent weeks, ranging from a church Sunday lunch at The Pheasant to a pilgrimage to the Holy Land which was coled by our vicar, the Rev Rob Jackson and in which several of our members took part. For those who did it was an unforgettable experience as the 12 day pilgrimage took us to many of the places where Jesus lived and taught, some like Galilee comparatively unchanged over 2,000 years but others such as Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem now very different with churches built over most of the holy sites, but nevertheless enabling us
to feel connected in a fresh way with the events described in the gospels and also to gain a greater understanding of the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Those at home were able to follow the pilgrimage on Rob’s daily blog (www. growingdisciples.net). Immediately following our return was the church “away weekend” at Lytham St Anne’s where around 50 (including 9 children who had their own programme), enjoyed a relaxing but stimulating two days at the Langdales Hotel. The Rev Tim Montgomery was our guest speaker and challenged us to think individually and as a church about the questions “Who are you?” and “Where are you going?” The children produced a delightful puppet show which enhanced our worship on Sunday morning.
During Lent the home groups have been focussing on the present day persecution of Christians around the world, notably in Syria and Iraq but in many other countries as well and hopefully raising our awareness of and concern for our brothers and sisters facing desperate situations and huge problems of daily living because of their faith - but which amazingly is also seeing the church grow.
February saw the final edition of our monthly church magazine in its present form following the resignation of our editor after 10+ years, but we are planning to further develop and improve the church website (www. allithwaitechurch.org.uk) from which details of events and services are available
Now we can really feel the spring in the air. Special services will mark Holy Week. In the United Reformed Church Hall there will be a joint service with the Methodist Congregation at 7.30pm on Maundy Thursday & on Good Friday morning at 10am we will meet again for worship. Everyone is welcome at these services & we also hope you will join with Churches Together at 11am on St. Charles field to remember why Good Friday is special. At 10.30am on April 5th we will gather to celebrate the festival of Easter! Please come along! On Easter Monday 6th April, 10am-noon we have our Coffee Morning. We’ll be so glad to welcome you. The first of our monthly walks takes place on Monday, 13th April, a short stroll in good company. God bless

In the March edition of Grange Now we printed an article about the sale of kitchen items from the Parish Hall in Grange.
At the end of the article we wrote: “The Parish Hall was apparently auctioned off recently we are not aware of the identity of the new owner.” However, it appears that the Parish Hall has not yet been sold, and we apologise for any distress or inconvenience this has caused. We have been informed by Mike Hill and Christine Harrison, churchwardens for the parish, that the hall will be sold, by auction,
“probably in the next two months - and the proceeds will go to the reordering of St. Paul’s”. Notices for the auction will be put up outside the hall and around Grange, once a date has been set. Mike and Christine would also like to reiterate that: “all are welcome to make their views known”. St Paul’s Parish Hall will be sold by auction on Thursday 23rd April at 2.30pm in Victoria Hall Grange-over-Sands

SCHOOL REPORTS
Flookburgh Primary
This half term we have had a busy time at Flookburgh School. First we have taken part in The Big Pedal 2015. The Big Pedal challenge inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. Last week we recorded a fantastic effort, we were 2nd in Cumbria, 4th in the North West and 42nd in the UK out of 670 schools! Our Year 5 and 6 children are enjoying sessions with BAe Systems to work on a robotic project.
KS1 children have been visiting Flookburgh Church to explore every corner of it and ask Rev. Rob some tricky questions as they have been learning about places of worship. Some of our KS1 children were invited to take part in a special school campfire to celebrate their good reading. It was a well deserved treat and the toasted marshmallows and hot dogs were much enjoyed by all.
We also truly enjoyed the visit of Colin Milner, who is a good friend of Flookburgh School, and led the assembly presenting his photographs of stunning winter in different parts of our Globe in relation to spring and new life, new beginning – Easter time. We have also very much enjoyed bible explorer ‘Jester for Jesus’ assemblies. Each session Mark takes older children on exciting and informative journeys through the Old Testament of the Bible. Wishing everyone a Happy Easter from Flookburgh CE Primary School."

Paralympian Rachael Latham puts Grange Primary through their paces
On Tuesday 10th March, Rachael Latham a paralympic swimmer visited our school to inspire children to be involved in sports. All children completed a fitness circuit led by a Sports for Schools Event sportivator to enable Rachael Latham to focus on working with the children during the fitness circuits. Then Rachael Latham gave an assembly to the entire school about her career and achievements. How with giving a 100% effort in sport,
enjoying the sport and working in collaboration with others children could also achieve their potential. All children had the opportunity to ask the athlete questions. Children collected sponsorship so that the school spends money on new sports equipment as well as supporting Rachael Latham. Mrs Phillips PE Co-ordinator said “It was a great experience for the children and we all enjoyed the visit from Rachael Latham the paralympic athlete.”
Clothes and Clutter sale raises record amount The former Holker and Cartmel Valley NSPCC committee are delighted to announce that a massive £950 was raised at their recent clothes and clutter sale held at Lower Holker Village
Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry
The event was organised by the Librarian, Mrs Scott, and members of the Reading Group. Students who accepted the invitation were given a ticket for Platform 9¾ and the Library was transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the evening. There were eight tables of crafts and activities to take part in, including wand designing, frog biscuit decorating and sand art test tube making. Refreshments available included appropriately themed pumpkin pasties, Trolls toenails
and cauldron cakes (baked by one of the students), the famous Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, liquorice wands and, of course, a Harry Potter Birthday cake. The evening ended with a quiz, set by one of the students, and four students won a Harry Potter hand knitted scarf in Hogwarts house colours. The whole evening was a great success and one which hopefully created a lot of happy memories and lots of encouragement to read for pleasure.

LETTERS
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor, As a regular visitor to Grange and reader of ‘Grange Now’ I am saddened, but not wholly surprised, that the local anti-brigade is already venting its spleen about the proposed new cycle route along the promenade. What is not to like about a scheme that encourages people to visit the town, spend money in the local shops and enjoy the beautiful promenade just as local residents so? Opponents of the scheme should make the trip around the bay to Morecambe on a sunny day to see how a large numbers of cyclists, people in wheelchairs, the elderly and families with buggies all manage to travel along the prom without incident or injury - all along a promenade that is no wider than the one in Grange for most of its length. Sustrans are a well-respected national charity that do not put their name to projects without first having researched them thoroughly to assess viability. The local naysayers should invest time in their own research before trying to stop a project that would bring money and visitors to the town. Until they do, and to paraphrase, ‘the League of Gentlemen’, opposition to the scheme does smack very much of the ‘this is a local promenade for local people’ attitude. Name and address supplied Dear Editor, Last months’ Grange Now article and letter about the new Morecambe Bay bike route passing through Grange made me smile. Cyclists are likely to make their own research-based decision to enjoy the scenic promenade or go through Grange to enjoy the facilities. Better still, they might do both or even stay a night! No route-markers should or could control that. The majority of Grange residents and visitors - walkers, ambient strollers, moon-walkers (I’ve seen a couple), scooter riders, kids on bikes, local cyclists, parents with prams, joggers, people with mobility aids/scooters, and dog owners are considerate to other prom users. Typically they will all give way for a faster paced walker, a faster mobility scooter or a even fast parent with a pram. Most bay cycle route users will no doubt offer the same courtesy. I understand the concerns that there will always be a minority of less accommodating people in all these categories, cyclists too! Cyclists shouldn’t be singled out though - let them enjoy this magnificent part of their journey.
The article stated up to 40 extra cyclists a day and asked could the prom cope. In a typical 8 hour day, thats a maximum of 5 extra per hour or 1 extra every 12 minutes. I’m quite a visual person, but I struggle to see a rammed promenade. So before anyone rushes to paint their sheep, shops, shoes, mobility aids or prams yellow, Grange should seize this small opportunity to inject new life and vibrancy into Grange. The worrying can be put at ‘bay', if you excuse the pun, until the Tour De France is routed along the promenade. If you wondered, I’m a courteous fast paced walker and occasional ambient stroller. I could be tempted to buy a bike though. Mark Illingworth, Grange-Over-Sands Dear Editor, In your March edition, you published a letter from Pete Endsor of Grange Chamber of Trade lamenting the sale of the Parish Hall with the words “Another done deal without anybody knowing”. There have been open consultations over the last three years to which all residents of Grange have been invited and the extensive communications and involvement exercises that we have carried out have been praised by our Archdeacon and referred to other parishes in Cumbria as a model to emulate. The Charity Commission praised the scheme which we proposed to them (and which has been on their website for over 4 weeks) as cogent, well argued and convincing. The Hall will be sold openly, probably by auction, in the next few months. Mr Endsor will be welcome at that event where he and anyone else will be free to bid and make a purchase. Christine Harrison and Mike Hill, Churchwardens St. Paul’s Church Dear Editor, I am interested to read the letters about litter as I also do this while walking around Allithwaite, Cark and Cartmel. Recently I have been pleased to see other ladies and gentlemen doing the same. I started clearing litter when walking in 1962 and eventually became a footpath lengthsman for the National Trust paths around Coniston. The most litter is thrown out of vehicles and I believe that a recent law has made the driver totally responsible for any litter from their vehicle. This may

well make prosecution much more common. Our lovely countryside would soon become spoilt by the rubbish discarded so casually. C. C. Flindall, Allithwaite Dear Editor, We all know, don’t we? that the ‘King and I’ was a story of an English governess who travelled to Siam during the reign of Queen Victoria. The Queen may not have been amused by the show but she would have been mightily entertained. This was pure theatre, and huge credit was earned by the whole cast and production team. The two main actors, of course, were the subject of the play’s title i.e. Anna played by Samantha Grundy, whose role was perfectly cast and executed: and the King, played by Steve Low, who carried his part with absolute authority. The Siamese children were a delight and clearly demonstrated young, very young talent and a whole lot of training, for they performed to an extremely high standard. One must see the ‘King and I’ to appreciate the brilliant colours of the costumes, and the inventiveness of the various dressings around the stage which created the true Eastern atmosphere of that day. All contributed to the whole experience, but Samantha Grundy’s beautiful voice and appearance must take a special accolade. Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding production which carries on the tradition of the wonderful group which is the Grange Operatic Society. Keep up the good work. Lionel Warner, Grange over Sands Dear Editor, As many of you will know, life at Kents Bank Post office has been changing daily during the recent downsizing. During this time all the facilities previously provided have been maintained with the usual friendly service, long may this last. I for one, would like to congratulate Tony and Debbie in achieving this in a more compact space. Yours sincerely, Brian Winter, Kents Bank

Grange now | APRIL 2015 - Next deadline 17th April
Dear Sir, As part of what seems an inexorable rush to fill every green space in Grange with houses (and developer’s pockets with money), I note that planning permission is now being sought to build houses on land at Guide’s Farm in Cart Lane. This is not “affordable” housing. This would be suburban sprawl and an unnecessary desecration of a rural and historic open space within a so-called “conservation” area. It is a site previously rejected from South Lakeland District Council’s ‘Land Development Plan’ because of the poor access and the protection of listed buildings. The Guide over Sands Trust, who is seeking the planning permission in order to “refurbish” the site and “continue to support its operation”, should ask whether selling off part of the asset is the best way forward. Building inappropriate housing might simply be a short term and ineffective solution to their problems. I urge every reader of Grange Now who enjoys the amenity of this small triangular oasis of wild meadows and listed buildings between Kents Bank and Grange to write to South Lakes Planning Department to oppose application SL/2015/0239. Yours sincerely, Andy Mortimer Dear Editor, What a wonderful performance of the King & I by Grange Amateur Operatic Society. Brilliant performance by Sam Grundy and the rest of the talented cast. Excellent production all round! Well done to all concerned. And aren’t we lucky in Grange to have such a marvellous venue for all the local groups who use it to put on shows, plays, concerts, exhibitions, meetings, dances, Xmas fairs, Remembrance Sunday refreshments, Mayor’s Tea Parties and more. How devastating it would be if we had to lose this fantastic facility. I urge everyone to contact the Victoria Hall Manager by post or email victoriahallmanager@ grangeoverands.net (GN March issue) and stress how detrimental it would be to the social fabric of Grange if it had to close. We have lost the Parish Hall; we mustn’t allow the Victoria Hall to go the same way. Use it or lose it seems to be the message. Grange managed to hold on to its only ‘family silver’, the Victoria Hall, when it lost its Urban District Council status in 1974, instead becoming part of SLDC. SLDC grabbed the Lido, the bridges, the prom and the parks and we know what happened to these! Lack of investment has led to closures, prom deterioration and the latest news is that SLDC is apparently not paying for anymore bedding plants on the walls around the Ornamental Gardens, the tubs by the underpass or on Cox’s Corner. This is dreadful news for all who enjoy Grange’s flowery appearance each summer. The expectation by SLDC seems to be that the Town Council can pick up the bill. This puts even more pressure on the Town Council’s resources especially if, as reported last month, SLDC are also considering reducing or withdrawing their contribution to the maintaining and running of the Victoria Hall. We can’t lose the only jewel in our crown. M A Harris, Grange

FRIENDLY HONEST LEGAL ADVICE
Commercial Property - Capital Allowances Capital allowances give tax relief for property owners, occupiers and investors. There are several types of allowances applicable to different asset categories. The principal forms, found in all commercial properties, are plant and machinery and integral features. All too often, capital allowances are left unclaimed for several years. The reasons for this include lack of awareness (by clients and their advisers), that they are seen as of little value, perceived as risky or too complicated and a common misconception that claiming reduces the capital gains tax base cost – potentially creating future issues – which is not the case, where properties are sold on for a profit. When the seller of commercial property has claimed capital allowances for fixtures, the seller and buyer will need to inform HMRC within two years of the transaction completion date of a ‘just and reasonable’ apportionment of the claimed allowances between them. This gives a ‘fixed’ value. If the fixed value requirement is not met then the result will be catastrophic for a buyer. Not only will the buyer never be able to claim any capital allowances, but should the property subsequently change hands, neither will any future owner of those fixtures. It is therefore crucial, when considering the sale or purchase of a commercial building, to establish whether allowances have been claimed in the past. In practice, sellers may have claimed on some assets, but not on others. The more information the buyer can obtain, the better it will be for maximising his own claim.
Offer ends next 21 days
Capital allowance rules have been toughened further, so that even where the seller has never claimed any capital allowances, it will be required to pool the expenditure and formally notify it to HMRC in a tax return. If this has not been done, the buyer loses out again. On a £500,000 property purchase, with capital allowances typically saving £25,000 to £50,000 (and as much as £125,000), failing to apply these new rules properly will prove costly to property buyers. Knowing the details can save you stress in the short term and money in the long term. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society In March, Jamie Lund, Regional Archaeologist for the National Trust, gave a fascinating talk to a large audience about the community archaeological dig that took place in Sizergh Park in the sizzling weeks of July 2013. The project was called ‘Dig in the Park'
Serving our local community for 3 generations Grange: 015395 33550 Also at Barrow, Dalton & Ulverston www.littleandcaine.co.uk 30
Together with Levens Local History Society and the archaeological contractor, Oxford Archaeology North, 80 volunteers and children from local schools were involved in the investigation of two sites – a Burnt Mound and a Bank and Ditch feature. Jamie explained how a systematic, historic landscape survey of the estate in 2010 had thrown
up 250 new sites and from that the two sites were chosen along with a building survey of the Great Barn. He gave a fascinating description of the excavation of the sites and how the evidence was interpreted, both from the Dig and from aerial photography. The volunteers had two weeks training before the Dig and then worked on each site, trying out new skills as well as learning much more about the history of Sizergh Park. The next talk is about the Sailing Yacht ‘Gondola’ on 2 April at 7.30 in Cartmel Village Hall
Grange WI Jacqueline Cottam gave a very interesting talk at our last meeting about School Angel. This is a charity which supports over 100 schools around the country, including ones in Kendal and Grange. She explained that if internet shoppers use the School Angel website (schoolangel. org.uk) before they buy from many websites such as M&S or Amazon then the seller donates money to School Angel. And it doesn’t cost the buyer anything. She told members about some of the projects which School Angel funds to help children with special needs or other learning problems. In April we look forward to a talk about women and girls in Ethiopia. New members are very welcome. Please contact Joanne on 015395 32932 for more information.
Cartmel Art Society Despite the wet weather many of our members attended the Spring Party in the village hall earlier this month. This is always a popular event in the Society’s calendar when members get together to share a delicious Jacobs Join buffet lunch and take part in painting competitions. The title for this year’s Roy Johnson Painting Competition was “Inside/ Outside”. An intriguing title that produced some very interesting work and the prize went to Catherine Alexander for her watercolour of pears cut in half. Members also voted for their favourite card and the winner was Ann Fitch. Many thanks to our members for donating an abundance of unwanted art materials and art books for our entertaining auction, the proceeds of which go to the local hospice. Once again this was a very enjoyable social event.
Allithwaite & Cartmel WI Frances Benton was the guest speaker for our March meeting and, following the business section, she spoke to us on her ‘Passion for Pearls’. She had brought along many examples of the different types of pearls and her talk was both interesting and instructive. Members were able to handle the samples which also included the shells of the different oysters. The next meeting is on Tuesday 7th April at 2.00pm when the speaker Christine Raafat will give us a talk about the River Lune. The May meeting will be on Tuesday 5th when Hilary Stubbs will talk us through ‘Historical Fashion through the years’. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.
3 Parks Group During the month Continental Landscapes completed the coppicing of the overgrown Laurel where we were working in the Ornamental Gardens. Planting of the trees and shrubs has started and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. We have also submitted an application for funds to purchase bulbs for planting in the Autumn to provide colour next spring.
Grange now | APRIL 2015 - Next deadline 17th April
Thanks to Continental Landscapes a quantity of wood chips has been produced from recycled branches which will be spread over the site to control weeds. A new leaflet for the Ornamental Gardens is currently in the design stage.
Grange Ramblers Due to the weather only one walk in the past month - 6 mile circular walk led by Alec Bottomle, 7 ramblers set off in fine but deteriorating weather from Gilpin Beck near Crook passed Bateman Fold to reach Thornfield, over Bow Mabble Breast to Bryan House, then Foxhole Bank and High House Farm, ending with a social visit to Wild Boar Inn. Now the weather is warming up come and join us on the extensive choice of walks from our Spring/Summer 2015 programme. It covers a wide variety of options from leisurely strolls to more energetic longer walks, you can expect a very warm welcome from the members. The walks in April are as follows: 2nd April 6.5 miles Backbarrow/Haverthwaite, 15th April 7 miles Post Knott/Brant Fell/School Knott, 23rd April 7 miles Langcliffe/Catrigg Force/Attermire Scar, 29th April 9 miles Arnside/ Jenny Brown’s point via Arnside Tower. Full programme can be found on Grange library notice board or Ramblers Lake District website http://www.ralakedistrict.talktalk. net/html/walks.html, or send email to jeanybarnett@hotmail.com to request the programme. We hope to see you on one of our walks soon.
Grange Lecture Society Pursuing Politicians’ was the apt title of broadcaster Michael Crick’s talk on 17th February. Drawing on his experiences as a TV reporter for Channel 4 and the BBC, he discussed with some amusing anecdotes the fun, perils, and dilemmas of holding politicians to account, a crucial role of the media in a free society. He gave a fascinating insight into the tricks of a TV reporter’s trade, and concluded that politics was in a healthier state today than when there was less transparency and reporters were more deferential. For the season’s final lecture wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering returned on 10th March to speak about her quest to sketch and paint ‘The Red Wolves of Ethiopia’. These rare animals are only found in a few remote mountain locations. Pollyanna’s illustrated lecture gave a gripping account of the physical hardships, such as freezing conditions, faced by her and her photographer daughter in locating them, and also contained excellent photographs of birds and hyenas at close range. At the AGM held before Pollyanna’s lecture Mrs Gill Mitchell was elected President for 2015-16. The new season of lectures begins on 13th October.
Newton and Field Broughton WI The meeting on 11th March was well attended. In the unfortunate absence of the speaker, which was disappointing, we enjoyed an informal evening getting to know our new members. Our next meeting on 8th April will be a talk on 'Owls' by the Owl Sanctuary at Barrow. This will be held in Lindale Village Hall at 7 .30pm.
Grange and District Photographic Society We have held four meetings prior to publishing date. February 16th - Robert Leach took us on a visit to the volcanic islands of Lanzarote and La Palma, making us
wish for some summer weather here. February 23rd – We had an excellent Print Competition. The results are as follows:- Colour Print - 1st Peter Kennedy, 2nd Ron Croy, 3rd Ann Anderson. Mono Print - 1st and 3rd John Mitchell, 2nd Julie Thomson. Best Overall Print Quality – Ron Croy. Congratulations to all the above. March 1st - Members Evening, we had a DVD presentation. March 9th – Ken Taylor showed us the dramatic scenery of Iceland, the Land of Ice and Fire, in the grip of winter, including the elusive Aurora Borealis. A report of the last two meetings in March will be in the May Grange Now. By the time you read this our season of meetings will be over until October. Visit our website: www. grangephotographicsociety.co.uk for full information about our society.
Grange Freemasons Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 (founded 1877) has received a letter from Shirley Martin of Lindale on behalf of the Riding for the Disabled Westmorland Group Limited (RDA) following the report last month in Grange Now about the Furness and South Lakeland Group of Lodges’ 29th Annual Dinner and Boxing Evening. RDA which operates locally to assist disabled riders received a grant of £300 last year from the proceeds of the Boxing Evening which was presented to Shirley by a member of the Arthur John Brogden Lodge at a Presentation Evening. It gave her the opportunity to explain the work of the RDA which is not government funded and relies on donations and volunteers. Shirley said “RDA was very grateful for the cheque and I enjoyed a convivial evening. We learnt a lot from the representatives of the many varied local charities and community projects present about how their grants would be used”. The 30th Annual Dinner and Boxing Evening will be held at the Cumbria Grand Hotel on 15th January 2016. Enquiries about meetings of the Lodge or hiring the Masonic Hall or grants from the Boxing Evenings can be sent to L1715secretary@gmail. com
Witherslack WI Ann Walshaw chaired the March Meeting and Shirley Christie won the draw to attend the Royal Garden Party. A summer outings to Hawes and a walk round Lindale were agreed.Bulbs will be planted around the village for September 16th, WI DAY for the Federation Centenary. Plans are afoot for the Let`s Connect day on May 2nd. The speakers were Edith Farrer & Freda Addison who spoke about the Leeds Childrens`Holiday Camp at Silverdale. It was founded in 1903 by the Mayor of Leeds and has been going strong ever since although many things have changed. At the start only children from a home where the weekly income was £1 or less were eligible to come to the camp. We heard of heartrending cases of disadvantaged children who came from dysfunctional homes, many of whom had never seen a cow or a sheep. Some had had their lives transformed by the experience. The camp is modern and well-equipped ,but fundraising is a continual problem. The ladies were obviously totally dedicated to this excellent cause and their enthusiasm showed. Next meeting April 14th Andy Lowe will talk about Lakeland Churches. Visitors welcome Tel 52302
Grange Soroptimists The club’s very successful 50s and 60s Disco raised £915 for “Mary’s Meals” a charity providing a hot meal in school for chronically poor children in Malawi and other countries. This attracts children into school and helps them gain an education and a better future. At the March Club meeting members voted to top up the money from other charitable fundraising so an amazing £1,830 will go to Mary’s Meals enabling 150 children to receive a meal every school day for one year. On March 14th members swam in the Kendal Swimathon raising money for ShelterBox. Further information on our work and events on website www.sigbi.org/grange-over-sands/

Coffee Club In January David Tomison revisited Coffee Club to tell us of his visits to work amongst the street boys of Peru. His visits over many years have been through the Vine Trust which works with Scripture Union to help the young boys who are often pushed out of their homes at an early age to fend for themselves. Often they become involved in gangs which are regarded by the police as vermin, liable to be shot or imprisoned on sight. The gangs, called ‘piranhas’, as they may attack and strip folk of everything they possess. If befriended and welcomed into one of the Vine’s Homes they have a chance of responding to Good News of the love of God that is told and demonstrated to them and can become valuable members of society. David introduced us to several such boys. In February Duncan Hamlett told us of the exciting work Mary’ Meals have been doing, especially of his recent visit to Malawi, to which we were able to donate some money..
Our next meeting is on April 21st at Abbot Hall at 10.30am preceded by coffee, when Rev Gay Pye will revisit us and talk about Future Planning.

Grange Civic Society We held our AGM on 12 March, attended by around 30 members and guests. Mike Hornung presented the Report and Accounts which were accepted by members. The following were elected onto the Committee: Chair: Frank McCall; Vice-chair: Harry Ashcroft; Secretary: Jackie Bailey; Treasurer: Mike Hornung; Membership secretary: Patricia Kimber; other Committee members: Joy Rutter (on a temporary basis) and Shirley Leaver. Joy was thanked for all her hard work as Secretary to the Committee.
Frank said that more members of the Committee were still needed to help with the Newsletter and organising trips. Issues raised by members – more publicity to note that the Civic Society is sharing the costs of painting litter bins and park benches with SLDC, concerns about parking and
the need for bollards, poor state of the Lido, SLDC will not fund the plants and flowers around the town from 2016.
After the AGM Dr Ruth Hughes gave an interesting talk on how Grange had developed from a small hamlet to a busy tourist town.
Trefoil Guild Our new Chairman, Joy Taylor, held a business meeting which was followed by a domino drive. The next meeting, a slide show on China, will be on the 13th April at Cartmel Village Hall. Details from Molly Inglis on 33141.
Grange & District U3A At our February meeting journalist Matthew Connolly entertained us with anecdotes reflecting his love of the Lake District. The monthly general meetings provide an opportunity for U3A members to gather informally and each is attended by approximately 100 of the current 380 membership. Whilst the poor weather has interrupted the programmes of some outdoor groups, a number of events have taken place. The badminton and table tennis groups scored notable successes against South Lakes U3A and the Cartmel Quiz, held in aid of Cartmel Village Hall, was successfully hosted by Grange U3A. The local explorers group visited Blackwell House in February and the Armitt Museum and Holehird Gardens in March.
Let's Bake For Comic Relief!
A group of friends were inspired by the Comic Relief Bake Off series on the television- so much so, that they baked hundreds of delicious cakes, biscuits, pies and scones to sell in aid of Comic Relief. They sold them on a stall next to the Co-op on the morning of Saturday 14th March. They even had a couple of little helpers selling Loom Bands on a separate stall for 10p each. It was a fantastic effort by all the bakers and they would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who baked and bought cakes. Thank-you to Mr Richardson at Independent Investment Associates for letting them use their forecourt as a temporary bakery! Together they raised a grand total of £210!

Forthcoming events include a games evening in April and a car-rally-quiz plus supper in June. The celebration of our 15th anniversary will include a train-Windermere boat trip-train and lunch event in June, a tea dance in a local hotel in July and a display in the library in September. These activities together with a Chester Zoo trip and a Scottish holiday organised for the ‘Out and About’ group ensure that members have busy summer ahead. Details of U3A’s activities can be found at www. u3asites.org.uk/grange
Cartmel and District Flower Club On March 16th we welcomed Sara Barrow from Preston for her demonstration entitled ‘In Vogue’. Sara's arrangements included a range of beautiful flowers from the humble daffodil to roses, sunflowers gerbera to magnificent tropical strelitzia heliconia protea and orchid. Sara gave information and useful tips on how to create some of the imaginative containers she used: one of which was made from old magazines. Our next meeting will be held in Cartmel Village Hall, 2pm, on April 20th. We look forward to welcoming Brenda Wardle from Cheshire with her demonstration entitled, ‘A Postcard from OZ’. Visitors and new members welcome.

We send our deepest sympathies to his widow, Dorothy, and his family. The Forum season finished on 24th March with a talk by Joyce Hodgson about the new Health Centre and which was followed by the AGM. We have full programme of outings for Spring and Summer:

Knitting tiny cardigans for premature babies (Inset: Thelma Lamb)
In 2012, Thelma Lamb was asked to say a few words at the United Reformed Church about knitting prayer shawls.
That twenty minute talk has led to 12 women, not all from the Church as this is not a religious group, meeting up once a month to knit beautiful shawls to give comfort to those who need it. Thelma, June, Dot, Rita, Olive, Flo, Eileen, Barbara, Margaret, Margaret, Winnie and Lillian are the knitters behind these beautiful shawls.
The shawls are given to people who are perhaps grieving or in need of comfort. Once knitted, a prayer is said over the shawls in the United Reformed Church, then they are carefully wrapped in tissue paper before being placed in a gift bag with a typewritten prayer. The group have received some wonderful feedback about their shawls from those receiving them. Recipients have said that they shawls have, “made them feel
loved”, and have “brought them great comfort.” The ladies, who meet between 2pm and 4pm on the third Tuesday of the month at Yewbarrow Lodge, are now knitting tiny cardigans for premature babies. Knitter (and reluctant group leader), Thelma, told Grange Now: “People don’t expect their babies to come early and don’t plan for it, so often these tiny babies have nothing to wear when they are born and rely on the hospital providing something. We hope our cardigans, bootees and little hats will be well received” The members of the group each pay £1 per week and from this pot the wool, gifts bags and tissue paper is bought, although Thelma did say that many of the group buy the wool themselves as well. They are very grateful for donations of gift bags and wool but stress that they use only new wool. If you would like to make a donation to the group please contact the Grange Now office.
