Grave situation averted
Poem from the Editor
On Saturday 14th March, Cartmel Young Farmers turned out in force to to plant a hedge alongside a field near the parish church in Flookburgh.
From Monday 27th April 2015 we will be located at 2, Imperial House, Main St., Grange-over-Sands.
The field has been kindly donated by the Wilson family, who are local farmers, when they heard that the current burial ground will soon be full. The field will become the new community burial ground and all legal issues have been formalised and planning permission granted. The full costs to complete the project will be in the region of £12,000, so a fund raising campaign is in progress. To start it off the CYF gave up their time to secure the boundaries and the village and the church are very grateful to them.
The telephone number is the same as always – 015395 35453 and our email is info@grangenow.co.uk Come and see us every weekday from 9-3. It is great to meet members of the community calling to discuss content, book adverts, ask for photocopying, and to seek directions. Everyone is welcome. ACCESS – The office is on the first floor so up a flight of stairs. We are very happy to come down and see you if you don't want to come up. Simply ring the bell on the inner door.
Look for the blue door just down Main street We've come to the end of our shop lease this week so we're moving just down the Main Street. It's the blue door right by the Foxes Den shop opposite Chocolori's shop full of treats. We've loved it being in our friendly old shop where we've been every day for 5 years But we need some more space and it's time for a change So we're moving with one or two tears. I'm hoping that we continue to get visits from friends old and new And even though we are on the first floor We're all there to meet and serve you. We still do copies, & adverts and news So come in and see our new place Just walk up the stairs and come straight on up You'll be met with a smiling face Our number's the same - 35453 And the hours are still 9-3 If you can't do the stairs, then just ring the bell and we'll come down right speedily!

Thank you to all those who completed and returned the forms. Their names were entered into a draw and the following have each won family tickets to visit Holker Hall and Gardens. Well done! David Pearson, Frank Leaver and Margaret Roberts We are pleased that both newspapers are well received and are regarded as filling useful niches in their respective areas. In Grange Now the highest rated content is local news, local authority information and local history. The pattern is similar in Windermere Now, with local news, wildlife/environment, and local history being the most liked content. The What’s On sections are popular in both papers. These sections will be strengthened and expanded to build on their popularity.
Survey respondents had some useful suggestions. These range from including puzzles, more “now and then” photographs, walking suggestions and reviews of local restaurants. We will try these out on an opportunity basis.
The “Now” newspapers are funded solely by advertising, and we value the support of local businesses. To attract and retain their loyalty as advertisers the written content must be of genuine interest to readers and our publications must be more than just pages of advertisements with no content, to be consigned quickly to the bin. Our surveys reassure us that readers enjoy receiving Grange Now and Windermere Now. Thank you to you all (and keep those letters coming in!).

Grange now | MAY 2015 - Next deadline 15th May
There were some good numbers coming out of the previous year review; the UK grew 2.6% in 2014, faster than any other advanced economy but lower than 3% predicted in December. Whilst not hitting the level predicted could be seen as a negative, I am sure we are all pleased to see continued growth in the UK economy. In addition to this, according to OBR Data, households were better off by an average of £900 over the last five years.
The tax-free personal allowance is to rise from £10,600 in 2015-16 to £10,800 in 20167 and £11,000 in 2017-8. The threshold at which people start paying 40p income tax to rise by above inflation from £42,385 in 2014-5 to £43,300 in 2017-8. Annual savings limit for ISAs increased to £15,240 and we now have “fully flexible” Cash ISA which will allow savers to withdraw money and put it back later in the year without losing any of their tax-free allowance. There is of course always some that lose out; for the third time under the Coalition Government the Lifetime Allowance for pension savings is to be reduced.
The allowance will fall from £1.25 million to £1million from April 2016, after being cut from £1.8 million to £1.5 million in April 2012 and then to £1.25 million in April 2014. It means that after savers have pulled together total pension savings of £1million, tax is paid at a rate of up to 55% on accumulated amounts over this limit.
The Chancellor said that fewer than 4% of pension savers currently approaching retirement will be affected. And from 2018 the allowance will rise in line with inflation.
What the budget always highlights is that the world of finance constantly evolves; the importance of monitoring the changes in legislation is equally as important as reviewing the investments you hold in order to provide the best possible overall return to you. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
On Sunday, April 12th action groups from Devon to Cumbria demonstrated against the way the planning system is working for local communities. They were all supporting a national day of action coordinated by the Community Voice on Planning (CoVoP). Grange & District Action Group encouraged local residents to come together for a symbolic meeting on an avenue of 11 lime trees that are due to be felled to make 'safer access' to a development of 64 dwellings. These trees are symbolic because, even though they are covered by a Tree Preservation Order and situated in the centre of Grange-over-Sands' Conservation Areas, SLDC has agreed that they can be felled. In their place will be an access road leading to a densely packed housing estate on a prime green field site. This development will destroy a valued open space, with iconic views across Morecambe Bay. These views bring tourists to Grange-over-Sands and the town's economy depends on tourists. GADAG believes "SLDC's planners are so preoccupied with 'housing targets' that they are ignoring national planning requirements because they know that local communities have no way to challenge their decisions. They also apply double standards to different planning applications and ignore objective evidence presented by local communities and Town Councils. They have failed in their 'duty of care' for the design needs of Conservation Areas, and their responsibilities to

All the national action groups have one common complaint: the Government claims to be supporting local communities but housing targets, time constraints in the planning process and threats from developers are distorting the way that planning applications are decided. Planning permission has been granted for developments that are not 'sustainable' but local communities
have no right of appeal against such decisions. Julie Mabberley, Chairman of Community Voice on Planning, said: “None of us disagree with the need to build more houses. But they should be built where they are needed, where there is work, and where there is sufficient infrastructure of roads, schools and medical facilities. Too often planning permission is given for housing which is in the wrong place.“

Connie & Joe's Story In just ten short months, Nicola and Ian Elson’s lives have gone from pretty near perfect to an absolute hell. The couple, who live in a converted barn near Cark, have been told not one, but both, of their young children are suffering from an incurable, genetic disease called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). This is a very cruel disease which causes the loss of the ability to walk, talk, hear and see. Eventually all normal functions shut down and the child becomes paralyzed.
Last year, Connie joined Cartmel Primary School. Her Mum Nicola told Grange Now: “Connie was a really bright, lively child who took an active interest in everything and was very happy and settled at nursery. It was when she started primary school that she started to change. She would scribble on other children’s work and not interact with the class. Connie’s teacher said some children find it difficult settling into school, but we know our child and we knew something wasn’t right”. Nicola shared her concerns with Connie’s former nursery teacher, Melanie Knight of the Acorn Montessori Nursery. Melanie told us: “Nicola told me that, after only a few weeks, Connie was not settling well at school and was
reluctant to read, write or at times co-operate. I was surprised as Connie had been a confident, outgoing little girl. She had a zest for life, a good sense of humour and an appetite for learning. She was able to count fluently, recognise written numerals and understood basic mathematical concepts. She had begun reading, she could write her own name and enjoyed drawing pictures. She was ready and looking forward to starting school. ” By this time Ian and Nicola had made an appointment for Connie to see the Doctor. Melanie offered to give the doctor her professional opinion, which she duly did, and Connie was immediately referred to specialists in Barrow for initial tests.
Ian said: “Tests confirmed that Connie had MLD and we were told we had to have our son Joe tested”. Nicola continued: “We thought Joe would be fine. I’m an accountant and knew the odds against it and we thought they couldn’t possibly both have it, but tragically the tests confirmed our worst fears." Both of their children have this disease. Your heart goes out to this lovely couple. Talking to them, their pain is clear to see and you can tell that they are still in a state of shock and disbelief at the turn their lives have taken. Connie is now unable to walk and talk and is in a wheelchair, but she does understand what is being said and will turn her head and look at you if you mention her name and she still has the most beautiful smile. Tragically, there is nothing that can be done for Connie as, at only 6 years old, her symptoms are already too advanced, but there is hope for Joe. Joe, 4, has just returned from the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (TIGET) in Milan where he underwent gene replacement therapy. GlaxoSmithKline are behind the trials and Joe’s treatment, and the family’s stay in Italy has been funded by them. The whole family spent four months in Italy and Joe will have have to return 3 times during the course of this year for further treatment. Nicola and Ian hope that this revolutionary treatment has given Joe a future.
"As a parent you hear stories like this... you can't help but be touched by it" Nicola said her employers have been incredibly supportive and her job is currently ‘on hold’ while she stays at home with her children and Ian, a Project Manager in London, still works full-time. She told Grange Now: “My company have been incredibly supportive. They allowed me to go to Italy for four months with Joe and continue to be very supportive and we’re really grateful for this”.

To volunteer to help out at the event, please contact Rachel on 07580 507816. She is still looking for people to help direct traffic and for car parking. (for full details of the acts appearing - please see poster)
However, although GlaxoSmithKline funded Joe’s treatment, Connie requires expensive specialist equipment in her daily life and, on hearing this, a Mum from Allithwaite has organised a fundraising event. Nicola and Ian are extremely grateful to Rachel for organising this event and are keen to stress that all funds made will be for the care of Connie and Joe and monies not used will be donated to charities including the MLD association. Fundraising event organised by Rachel Pocklington and Sian Hunter. Rachel, Mum to a 5 year old daughter herself, heard about Connie and Joe and felt compelled to do something to help. She told Grange Now:”As a parent, you hear stories like this and you look at your own child and you can’t help but be touched by it. When I read about MLD and what it does I decided it wasn’t enough to just sit there and count your blessings and feel awful for the other family - I just wanted to do something”.
Bob Stott from the MLD Support Association UK will open the fun day. Bob told us: “The news that your child has a degenerative disease must be devastating for any family, so how must it feel to have two children diagnosed with the same condition? Most parents will never know. When Connie and Joe Elson’s parents received the news, their friends and neighbours soon rallied round and started organising the extra funding the family would require to obtain therapy which is not available through the NHS.
I feel privileged to have been invited to open the Fun Day which is being organised by the local community. Our charity is quite small, and unable to fund families in this way, so we really appreciate what is being done.
MLD Support Association UK was founded to offer advice and support to families affected by Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD), and to spread awareness (amongst Healthcare workers in particular) so that earlier diagnosis might be achieved. We rely totally on donations for this work, and additionally are committed to offering 20% of donated income to research into prevention and treatment of the disease.” www.MLDSupportUK.org.uk

Poll Position
On 7 May the country goes to the polls. Voters have the chance to decide which party will run the country for the next five years and, in a third of South Lakeland, district and parish elections will also be held.
In the run-up to what many people are referring to as one of the most unpredictable elections in living memory Grange Now asked the five candidates for Westmorland and Lonsdale to outline their bids to become your next MP. Their answers are in alphabetical order by party name.
Conservative
Green Party
Labour Party
Liberal Democrat
UKIP
Ann Myatt lives in Kendal and works as an NHS doctor at Westmorland General Hospital.
Chris Loynes is a lecturer and researcher in outdoor studies at the University of Cumbria. In many ways, the South Lakes provides a vision for the future, with small businesses meeting local needs, strong communities and a high quality of life. Yet, we also need new policies to reduce carbon emissions, tackle austerity, share wealth and improve our environment. My reasons to vote Green: Fair rewards for real work The South Lakes is lucky, but there are still too many zero hours, temporary and minimum wage jobs. Anti-austerity We need fair taxes and clean, green jobs, not benefit cuts. Even here there is homelessness, food banks and increased suicide rates. Meaningful climate change action We need carbon reduction and enhanced renewable energy, home insulation, public transport, local food, flood control and coastal defences. Defence from corporate power We oppose deals that allow corporations to threaten workers, consumers, citizens and the environment. Banking and monetary reform Power to create money will be removed from private banks and restored to democratic and public control. Voting reform Proportional representation would end the dominance of two political parties and give a voice to every citizen. Keeping the NHS public and supporting localised primary care, integrated social and health care and enhanced mental health care. Public ownership of public services, speeding up electrification, cancelling HS2 and investing in new lines and rolling stock.
John Bateson is from Kendal and served as mayor between 2009 and 2010.
Tim Farron has been MP for Westmorland & Lonsdale since 2005.
Alan Piper is owner of the Sun Hotel, Coniston.
As a Conservative, I believe in personal responsibility. I have been very fortunate to be born healthy, into a loving family and have benefitted from an excellent (state) education. So I know that it is my job to look after myself, my family and my community and to pay taxes to help others who cannot look after themselves.
I believe that those who can should look after themselves and those who cannot should be helped. But there is a difference between a welfare state, funded from taxation that provides a safety net in times of hardship, and a comfort blanket, which deters people from looking after themselves and their families. The difference between Conservatives and the other parties comes down to that balance between personal responsibility and lower taxes on one side (Conservative) and state responsibility, higher taxes and higher borrowing on the other (Labour). That is the fundamental choice facing voters at the General Election. Conservatives will give you competent government, we will continue to manage the economy well and protect and improve our public services. We offer you and your family hope, opportunity and prosperity.
I am delighted to have been selected as Labour's Parliamentary candidate for Westmorland & Lonsdale. Westmorland has been my family home for generations, and I was born, schooled and worked much of my life in my home town of Kendal. Sadly, Britain today is a massively unequal country and has become much more so in the past five years. Since 2010, the national debt has doubled to a colossal £1.5 trillion and George Osborne has borrowed more in five years than Labour chancellors have in 90. As a personal carer for many years, I am acutely aware of the crisis in NHS care, experienced daily by some of the most vulnerable people in our community. If elected, I would work tirelessly on your behalf. My pledges: I will support the reintroduction of the 50 pence tax band, raising the minimum wage and offering incentives to pay a living wage. I will fight for the integration of NHS and social care services and the recruitment of over 30,000 frontline staff. I will campaign to lower the voting age to 16 and bring back the Education Maintenance Allowance. I will promote the need for affordable housing for local people. I will be at the front of the lobby to vote for the abolition of the unfair bedroom tax.

Grange now | MAY 2015 - Next deadline 15th May
For the past 10 years, I have been lucky enough to be your MP and I have tried really hard to use that honour, to work for the benefit of this area and the people who live here. I am really proud of the things that we have helped to make happen – new jobs at places like the Steamboat Museum and at GSK in Ulverston, 3,500 young people in apprenticeships, investment in the new chemotherapy unit at the Westmorland General Hospital, electrification of the Lakes Line. These are just the headlinegrabbing achievements. My team and I have dealt with over 70,000 “cases”, helping people get rehoused, helping with benefit applications, helping firms win grants, helping anyone who needs us. But there is much more I want to do. The hospital has a chemotherapy unit, but cancer sufferers need radiotherapy treatment without having to travel to Preston. The Lakes Line is being electrified, but the Furness Line also needs electrification. We have very low unemployment, but we don’t have enough well-paid jobs. We get people rehoused, but we need more affordable homes to be built.
I see UKIP as the sensible choice for like-minded grown-ups who despair at the antics of the modern crop of political leaders - posh boys, with rich daddies or rich wives, who've never had a real job in their lives. I'm not here to challenge anyone's political convictions, but I am here to question their political allegiances. I moved here in 2000 when I bought The Sun in Coniston, thinking: “What could possibly go wrong?” Far too much, it turned out. Which is why, if I get elected and UKIP gets enough support to become part of a small, conservatively-minded alliance, I will do everything I can to draw attention to measures that will offer help to small businesses, starting with reforming VAT and abolishing the retrospective VAT "penalty". A very big local issue is trying to keep small businesses going and the pressures on SMEs. Most are struggling and this constituency depends on them. We're like a forgotten army and that’s why the VAT reform is so important here.
Another issue is the National Park Authority selling off land. There's more to that than meets the eye. Plus housing policies, which have driven local families out, lack of accountability, which they have If I am lucky enough to be reforgotten, or choose to ignore, and elected, all I can promise is that their statutory duty, which is to I will continue to work as hard protect local communities. Instead, as I can on issues like these to Control Service theyPest are competing against them to make this area an even betterQuality 50 Years Industry Experience place for us to live. recover lost funding.

Dance Platform Extravaganza
F I T N E S S
On Friday 20th March the Year 5 children from Allithwaite Primary School participated in the Ulverston Dance Platform. The children performed an energetic and moving World War One inspired dance. Year 5 teacher, Mrs Gillian Elliott said: “The children were brilliant, a credit to the school, and thoroughly impressed the audience.” Also taking part in the dance platform were 20 children from Years 5 and 6 of Grange Primary. A spokesperson for the school told Grange Now: “The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the night. They helped to choose a selection of funky music including 'Uptown Funk' by Bruno Mars which was mixed by Lucy Everett to create a brilliant choreographed piece which the children loved performing to.” Lindale Primary School also took part and their dance was based around the

Arnside Sailing Club
The new sailing season is well underway at Arnside Sailing Club. The club offers its members a regular programme of sailing races, and they also have a Wayfarer sailing dinghy in which they can take out new members. There are two Topper single handed sailing dinghies, and the club has moorings out in the estuary that are suitable for small yachts. Alasdair Simpson, Sailing Secretary, told Grange Now: "When the tide is on a sunny day, Arnside is one of the best places to sail in the North West. There is more water than in a lake and the winds are more reliable." The club also has a clubhouse in the historic Old Customs House on the Promenade just past the Fighting Cocks. The clubhouse is open to members on Fridays from 9 pm and is available for hire. There is a regular programme of music events. Sam Willis Rear Commodore said " The clubhouse offers an intimate atmosphere for music. Many bands like playing here. Up and coming events include Dawn Foster & Friends on Friday 1st May and on Thursday 4th June Jazz Offline." The Club has one of the cheapest memberships in the North West. Full membership is £60 a year and social membership £30. (photo credit : Irene Oxford)

Lent Challenge brings school library up to date Reverend Rob Jackson, vicar of St.Mary’s church in Allithwaite has close links with the adjoining primary school, Allithwaite. Since joining St Mary’s nearly 5 years ago, ‘Rev Rob’ is a governor at the school and is actively involved in activities in and out of school. He told Grange Now: “Since becoming a governor, I am very much aware of the increasing costs of running a school; staffing, equipment etc, but I was taken aback when a teacher told me she had bought books out of her own pocket. As someone who loves to read, and loves to see children reading, I was grateful to her for doing this, and I also thought this was an opportunity for me to help.” For his Lent challenge, he decided, as the overall theme was about
You might be familiar with the expression 'Ne'er cast a clout till May be out' which I've been assured has something to do with removing your vest so you can surmise that it also means things are warming up out there. Which if you have an allotment means you can liberate your window sills and/or greenhouses and plant out your tender crops, as the risk of frost has now passed. These include some of the tastiest courgettes, climbing beans, runner beans, squashes and peas it also means that the asparagus will soon be poking their heads out in search of sunshine. With this in mind it's probably a good idea take a few preventative
measures to ward off pests: there are few things more galling than seeing that first intrepid spear being rasped away at by a bon viveur of the slug world. You can do this in a number of ways - a layer of sharp sand is a good start then I usually use some organic slug pellets. You can use garlic spray or coffee grounds or set up a slug 'pub' but I've found that these are often washed out by the rain, it may be summer but this is the Lakes. Another frustrating pest is the caterpillar of the cabbage white butterfly and it's probably worth stepping up your vigilance during this month. In the past I've erected huge netted structures which do a great

job but I've observed the butterflies actually laying their eggs on the netting above the brassicas and then days later the caterpillars abseiling James Bond like on silken threads, so it's always worth checking the plants themselves. You can pick these Caterpillars off by hand but this can be time consuming and unpleasant for all concerned, so I periodically lay a couple of sheets of newspaper around the base of each plant and whack the stem as hard as I dare in order to dislodge them, you can then rescue any spiders or other beneficial insects before discarding the paper and the poor caterpillars. When you come to plant smaller squashes (butternut, acorn etc) it's definitely worth thinking about training them up along a fence or a wall if there’s one available, as then you can control their sprawling habit a little more easily, they are less likely to rot and should ripen a lot better especially if you're lucky and it's south facing.

A day in the life
Have you got what it takes?
Could you step up to the plate and be an on-call (retained) firefighter? As part of our ‘day in the life series’, Grange Now visited Grange fire station and spoke to the nine local men who make up the team of on call firefighters for our area.
Many of you will know some, or perhaps all, of the men who are ready and willing to come to our rescue, should the need arise. The team consists of crew managers: Simon Baker, owner of Wilson Robinson; John Sayle, full time on call firefighter (John is a full time firefighter at Barrow and goes ‘on-call’ for Grange when he finishes his shift) and Bob Tallon, Builder. The rest of the crew are: Alan Speirs, self-employed builder; Eric Richards, postman; Paul Garnett, Croppers; Nathan Higginson, Landscape Gardener, Mike Stonier Building and Joinery services, and Gary Wareing, Plumber. I attended one of the weekly training sessions, which take place on a Wednesday night, and the first thing that struck me is the friendly banter and camaraderie amongst the team. You get the sense that, although it may be difficult at times to
fit it all in, full time job, family etc, these men are fully committed to giving something back to the community and, are more than happy to do so. This was confirmed by long term crew member, Eric Richards, who said: “we are a close knit bunch, we’re like a second family.” Eric along with Bob Tallon are the stations longest serving members; they have each been serving the community for 31 years! As Simon says: “it is incredible to think that these two men have come to training sessions every Wednesday night for the last 31 years. That’s real commitment” Like other fire stations throughout the County, Grange is currently recruiting. There are no stipulations or restrictions to applying. Enquiries are welcome regardless of height, age or gender,
although it goes without saying that you do need to be healthy and have a certain level of fitness.
John Sayle, full time firefighter at Barrow, is keen to point out that you don’t need to sign up on your own: “get a few friends involved and you can all join at the same time and go through your training together. Chivvy each other along.”
Alan Spiers, a self employed builder, lives in Grange with his wife Vicky and his two daughters aged 13 and 11. He moved here from Northumberland 20 years ago and has been an on-call firefighter for the past 9 years. He is full time which means he is ‘on call’ for 120 hours per week. Alan admitted: “Being self-employed makes it easier as I make my own hours but it can be tricky if I’m say working on a roof with someone else and my pager goes off and I just have to go

The area’s extraordinary range of diverse habitats, and the mosaic of stunning limestone pavements, low limestone hills, ancient woodlands, mosses, orchards and meadows, along with an impressive coastal setting, magnificent views and the best sunsets in Britain make this a truly special place. Springtime is a wonderful time to visit Arnside and Silverdale AONB with the rare Lady’s Slipper orchid in bloom on Gait Barrows; wild garlic and bluebell carpeting the floor at Grubbins Wood; the Kent bore tidal wave at high tide in Arnside; butterflies including the Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Pearl-bordered Fritillary visible at sites across the AONB; as well as the arrival of summer visitors like the Avocet and Marsh Harrier to RSPB Leighton Moss. Grange Community Led Plan
A leaflet containing a summary of the Community Led Plan Report and the Action Plan was delivered to all households last November. Since then the CLP committee has met to look at progress with the Action Plan. Many of the items are being picked up through the process of preparing the Neighbourhood Plan for Grange. This plan is drawing quite heavily on the results of the CLP process and is making use of the views set out by people who responded to the various questionnaires. The whole point of the CLP is to lead to actions which reflect the views collected during the process. There is much to achieve but it is good to report that some things in the Action Plan have already happened such as; improvements to the appearance of the Lido, traffic monitoring by Cumbria County Council, information on public
transport to hospitals being available at the TIC and Health Centre and information about the respective roles of the three tiers of local government on the Grange Town Council website. Before Christmas there was a parking enforcement blitz in the town but parking remains a major issue and features along with other transport issues and planning and development in the Neighbourhood Plan work.
The CLP Committee would like to thank everyone who helped over the last two years. If you would like to get in touch please do so via the Town Council.
Neighbourhood Plan – Kents Bank - We Need You! The outside world may think Grange is just the Pond, Prom and shops, but we know better - Grange Parish stretches all the way from Castle Head Hill, up Hampsfell to High Farm, and along the coast as far as Abbot Hall at Kents Bank. Our Neighbourhood Plan must do it all justice! At the moment, the Steering Group would really welcome the input and local knowledge of people in Kents Bank, to make sure we get it right for an area which is part of Grange Parish and also has its own history, identity and needs. We would be delighted if one or two people from this area
would join our Group. Please email the Acting Town Clerk at contactus@ grangeoversands.net to find out how you can help ensure that the whole of the Parish of Grange-over-Sands has the best possible representation in the Neighbourhood Plan.
New look for Allithwaite Community Centre
Regular users of Allithwaite Community Centre (officially known as Allithwaite Playing Fields & Community Centre (APF&CC) will have noticed all the improvements that have taken place recently. Over the last twelve months work has been undertaken to build an extension which now forms brand new disabled toilet/baby change facilities and new porch extension. Philip Pascall, Chair of the committee, told Grange now: “A lot of work and effort has been put into fundraising by the committee and it’s great to see it all come together”. The total cost for all the improvements and the extension work was £36,193.76 and funding was received through various organisations including Lottery Fund ‘Awards for All’, SLDC New Homes Bonus - Locally Important Projects, Frieda Scott Charitable Trust, Hadfield Charitable Trust, Charles Godwin Charitable Trust, Neighbourhood Forum, Furness Building Society, Allithwaite & Cartmel WI, District Councillor Annual New Homes Bonus, and a generous donation from the local WI group.
Members of the APF & CC & WI Committee
Left: Philip Pascall
In total £26,843.00 was raised and APF&CC contributed the remaining £9,350.76 from their own funds. The committee would like to thank all funding bodies for their support, and they are now busy raising funds for their project: a ‘Storeroom Extension’ in order that all tables, chairs and table tennis tables can be stored externally to the main Hall, thereby making extra floor space available for all users.

FOOD & DRINK
The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District by James Rebanks was published last week and is now available from Low Sizergh Barn. Documenting life with a flock of 600 Herdwick sheep, it is a great read that highlights the important work that goes into farming our native breed. Herdwick lamb is so special it is part of the EU’s Protected Designation of Origin scheme, which highlights regional and traditional foods whose authenticity and origin can be guaranteed. It will be arriving in the farm shop from late April and our chef, Paul, has put together a recipe to celebrate this local meat. Enjoy.
Roast Herdwick Lamb with Braised Puy Lentils and Growing Well Spinach 1. Rub the lamb joint all over with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, cumin and coriander seeds. 2. Place the joint in the bottom of a roasting tray with the onion, 4 of the garlic cloves and a few sprigs of thyme. Roast for 30 minutes to seal the meat before adding cold water to the tray. Continue roasting (15 minutes per lb for medium rare, 20 minutes per lb for medium). 3. Remove the joint from the tray and wrap in tin foil. Leave to rest on a plate for at least 30 minutes before carving. 4. Sauté the shallots in half of the butter with the lardons and remaining garlic. Add the lentils, bay leaf, tomato puree and enough chicken stock to ensure the lentils are covered. Simmer for 45 minutes and season with the parsley. 5. Wash the spinach and sauté in the rest of the butter until wilted. Season and add ground nutmeg. 6. Mix the spinach into the lentils and serve with lamb.

are great value and perfect for family dining. For something a little bit different, we will have a steady supply of ‘Lakeland Herdwick’ available in the shop throughout May. Lakeland Herdwick is a native breed of the central and western Lake District, and they are renowned for producing a dark and distinctive tasting meat of the finest quality, thanks to being allowed to mature slowly on a heather and moorland grass diet on the fells. from one happy customer: “We called into Higginsons shop in Grange on the way back from the Lakes on Wednesday and bought a rack of Herdwick lamb for Friday's supper. I cooked it very rare with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and some fresh rosemary, seared on the outside and then cooked in a hot oven for 12 minutes, served with some steamed spring veg. It was the best we've ever had - absolutely mouthwatering. Everyone said it was superb. Many thanks, and please pass on my compliments to the owners of the flock”
All the Lakeland Herdwick meat sold at Higginsons is PDO regulated and farm assured, which means that the lambs were born, raised and slaughtered in Cumbria. Although we usually have plenty of choice available, if you do have specific requirements, we recommend to phone ahead in advance. If you would like to find out a bit more about this lovely breed, photographer Ian Lawson has recently produced a wonderful book ‘Herdwick: A portrait of Lakeland’ that captures the lives of Herdwick shepherds through images.

would also like to thank all of the team at the Victoria Hall and my fellow Councillors for their help and support during my time in office as well as the Chamber of Trade and local businesses who really did step up to the mark when it came to fundraising and donating raffle prizes. Thank you to you all. But perhaps the biggest ‘thank you’ should go to the community who have made Jackie and I so welcome at so many events – I have really enjoyed meeting you all and feel I have made many new friends during the year. Later in April Jackie and I will be presenting a cheque for over £600 to each of the two charities we raised money for, Diabetes UK and St Mary’s
Hospice at Home. As I write this, we have a couple more official appearances before the year closes, one being the unveiling later this week of the amazing sculpture of flying ducks which the Bloom Group has raised money for, and had installed in the bed beside the station.
The ever popular Holker Garden Festival will be held
I look back on what has been a busy year with great fondness for all the friendly welcomes we have received, for the ribbons cut and the things unveiled, for the opportunity to improve the façade of the Lido and to meet and talk to so many people.
The AGM of the High Newton Village Hall was held on the 30th March and even though it was a wild and windy evening nearly 30 residents attended. A new committee was elected and the outgoing Chair, Tracey Williams, received praise for her efforts in keeping the hall running over the past few years.
Top of the list for my vote of thanks has to be Jackie Bailey who has been a fantastic Consort throughout the year, not only escorting and driving me to events but also keeping the Mayoral chain under control! Without her life would have been a bit more difficult and a lot more daunting. I
Please note that due to the date of the election, the May Council meeting will be held a week later than normal on May 18th at 7pm. Once new Councillors have been sworn in a series of dates for councillor surgeries will be set. Until then, please do not hesitate in contacting us via the Victoria Hall. Tricia Thomas May 2015
I wish them well and with the large community support shown at the meeting I am sure they will go from strength to strength.
The Easter period was a very busy one in Grange and area and I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. The promenade recreation area was very busy and the new crazy golf was especially well used. I must thank all the volunteers for their contribution in making this area so welcoming for residents and visitors alike. Regards Bill Wearing, Conservative County Councillor Grange Division

The new Chair, Mark Jackson, thanked the whole community for supporting the pantomime Cinderella which was held earlier in the year and helped raise funds for the hall. An increase in bookings over the past few months has helped put the hall on a better financial footing. The Hall is primarily an asset for the people in Newton in Cartmel (High and Low Newton), Ayside, Barber Green and Field Broughton. Secondly, local organisations such as the Parish Council, WI, and local voluntary groups should also benefit. Thirdly other organisations which may have a commercial interest might also be interested in hiring it. With this in mind it

ART & MUSIC
Male Voices join in song
The first weekend in June will see the well respected and very talented Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir visit the Lake District.
In 1968 a small group of singers met at a local public house and declared their intention to meet on a regular basis to sing for pleasure, and so the Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir was born and the Choir have performed extensively in both Britain and Europe.
On Saturday June 6th, at 7.30 pm they will perform a concert at the Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands, jointly with the Barrow Male Voice Choir. Tickets for this concert are available from 1st May from The Victoria Hall box office. Tickets are £7. These versatile choirs will be performing a wide range of music, catering for all tastes and looks set to be a memorable evening of entertainment.
Grange Concert Club
The first concert of the 42nd season of the Grange-over-Sands and district concert club will take place at 8pm on Friday 8th May 2015 in the Victoria Hall.
By kind permission of the Royal Northern College of Music, four opera stars of the future will appear with their pianist to perform a selection of arias from operas by Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet and Delibes as well as songs by Rogers and Hammerstein, Offenbach, Gilbert and Sullivan and others. There really will be something to suit everyone and past concerts by the College's pupils have been very well received. Admission at the door is £10. We do need everyone to support the Victoria Hall without which our concerts could not take place."
Featured Artist: Hideyuki Sobue An encounter with Hideyuki in his studio in Kendal has all the ingredients that a visit to an artist should include: walls crowded with pictures, a palette and pots of colour, an intriguing work in progress, and a softly spoken man who is thoughtful, candid and an enigma, all rolled into one.
Getting a handle on Hideyuki’s approach to his work is like searching through the meticulously painted fallen leaves in his pictures – he rustles with energy, is an environmentalist in his thinking, and lifting each leaf reveals, bit by bit, an insight into how he works and thinks as an artist. A Japanese national who married his wife, Kirstie, when she was teaching in Japan, Hideyuki lives in Grange-over-Sands and draws much of his inspiration from people and places in the Lake District. This link is personified by his exhibition in Rydal Mount, which opened earlier this month and celebrates the publication in 1815 of William Wordsworth’s now iconic poem, Daffodils. This is Hideyuki’s third exhibition at Rydal Mount and his third alongside poet Gary Boswell. It also celebrates Hideyuki’s ten years in Britain. I found Hideyuki working on a fascinating portrait of Wordsworth, whose appearance varies significantly between works by contemporary artists, some of whom probably presented Wordsworth’s appearance in an overly favourable light. Hideyuki’s interpretation is probably one of the most authentic in terms of the real shape of Wordsworth’s face as it is based on a “life mask” made in 1815.
MAIN: At work in his studio on portrait of Wordsworth INSET: View towards Ambleside
Hideyuki has shunned “smelly” oil or thick acrylic paints as mediums, preferring to work in delicate layers: first drawing and line-hatching with sumi ink, and then using a very limited range of semi-transparent acrylic tints, with a palette of no more than seven colours, to create tints that are part reality and part in our imaginations. It is an exacting technique, leaving little room for error, and creates luminous tones.
Hideyuki’s aim is to challenge art, by seeking to bridge a “gap” between conventional heritage paintings with a technique that is more subtle than the “wow factor” often sought by contemporary artists. He is particularly interested in research that has examined how use of line and colour can trigger neurological responses to art. He has exhibited in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, and his travelling exhibition

“The Way I See” was part-funded by an Arts Council grant. As a member of the prestigious Lakes Artists Society it would be good to see his work in major commercial galleries. As a Japanese artist in England, Hideyuki misses most the food, friends and hot springs (“onsen”) of his native country, but equally he is enthusiastic about the cultural advantages of raising a family in this country. Kirstie is a specialist Japanese translator who is training also to teach Japanese as a second language, his son is studying maths at Durham University and his daughter also plans soon to start university. A fascinating man, and an interesting and accomplished artist. Visit Rydal Mount to see and be drawn into Hideyuki Sobue’s unique and intriguing style of painting.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands
Welcome to our Spring newsletter, where we tell you all about our recent outings, activities and entertainers January
A new year demanded new ideas - the residents made a flower mural mosaic, proudly displayed at The Old Vicarage. They didn't stop at making a mural but also made bookmarks and started on a valentine’s day banner at the end of the month. There were regular trips out to Grange for coffee and cake. Several residents went to visit the Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow – including the display about the famous Donald Campbell.
February
It turned out to be a flower month, as well as finishing off the flower mosaic the residents planted flower bulbs, made some beautiful flowers displays for Valentines Day and at the end of the month decorated flower pots and filled them with chive, basil and coriander seeds. We had several entertainers visit - Peter Fichit the marvellous magician, Judith Pool and her amazing group of talented youngsters and Richard Bromley the pianist who performed a medley of pieces to the delight of all.
Our craft work didn’t stop as the residents made Valentine mobiles, friendship wreaths, they also started St. Patrick’ Day decorations and Andrew had them begin Easter decorations
Arnold, Tony and Kamal at the Lakeland Motor Museum We had visits from Jean Marks, the highly skilled accordion player and John Mario who sings and plays the piano and who got the residents very engaged in his own version of ‘Guess That Tune’.
Our choir has really sparked into life with new volunteers including David, who plays the accordion and Anne who is an accomplished opera singer. We also got a new electronic keyboard. The choir was renamed ‘Vicarage Voices’ and together with new songs we have more residents singing than ever before. 20
March
We started March by making shamrock paintings to put up for St. Patrick's Day and of course we had to celebrate with a glass of Guinness at lunch!
The residents made an Easter Egg Tree as well as bunting to put up. They also made beautiful tissue paper eggs and baskets which they filled with chocolate eggs to give to the Allithwaite Montessori schoolchildren when they came to give an Easter show. The residents loved it. It’s not Easter without decorating Easter bonnets though.
Ellen and Betty displaying their new hats – perfect for a day at the races!

Some of the residents went to see the musical The King and I at Victoria Hall and were very impressed.
A few residents also visited Lindale candle factory and learnt how to dip them, it is definitely worth another visit. Brantano Shoes kindly came to visit at the end of the month and it gave residents a chance to get some new shoes.

St Paul’s, Grange
A special Easter activity for all the children in Grange CE Primary School was organised by Rector Nick Ash together with members of St Paul’s congregation.
The prayer spaces initiative took place over three days in the Fell Church which was set up in six prayer areas with a whole group discussion space. The focus was on the emotions and feelings the Easter story evoked in us and how we can explore those feelings in our lives today. The individual prayer spaces were centred on Joy, Friendship, Big Questions, Helping Others, Forgiveness and Hopes & Dreams. Every child

Christian Aid week
There are several events happening in the Grange area related to this fundraising week. There will be a United Service at the United Reformed Church on Sunday 10 May at 6:30 p.m. The service will be led by the Rev. Jo Rand. There will be a Coffee Morning between 10 and 12pm on Wednesday 13 May in Grange Methodist Church Hall.

experienced each space and throughout the sessions the children showed their developing understanding of Christian beliefs in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The children expressed their thoughts and feelings about each prayer space with a series of written words, drawings and models and these were hung on a series of displays which are now in St Paul’s Church to share with our congregation and visitors. St Paul’s Spring Fair will be held on Saturday, 16th May from 10am -12 noon in church. St Charles
An excellent parish away day, led by Sister Michaela at Our Lady of Hyning Convent, was a good Lenten shot in the arm. Likewise a weekend at Wigton with the Cor et Lumen Christi Community reflecting on 'The New Pentecost'. Good talks and powerful praise meant the weekend flew by. One drawback – I had to preach on the Saturday! The Easter Services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Day were very well supported. It is good to see how visitors on holiday don’t leave God at home – He comes with them – Well done!
Yellow roadside lines in Grange seem to have little effect on many drivers – perhaps understandable when everyone seems to have a car. The beautiful weather has lifted people's spirits – sunshine is a great gift. An excellent talk supported with slides by Keith Buckler gave the Men's Group an interesting insight to medical work in Eastern Europe and parts of Africa. St Cuthbert's is now on the market. May we expect an early sale? Enjoy the Spring! God bless. Fr. P. P.S. As you get older, 3 things happen. The first is – your memory goes… And I can't remember the other two!
The United Reformed Church All the Holy Week and Easter Services were well attended and now we look forward to Pentecost on May 24th, another highlight of the Christian Calendar. On Saturday, 11th April we were pleased to welcome to our Ministry team the Revd Pam Noonan with an induction service at Kendal. She is a non-stipendiary minister who is based in Kendal, and will be assisting Martyn and Carole throughout the group.
Tottlebank Baptist Church The “Li’l Chapel-in-the-fields” near Greenodd welcomes all to the Café style service on May 17th.
Café service is held on the 3rd Sunday each month, when an informal meeting led by an invited speaker is held in the ‘Schoolroom’ at 10.30am. Tottlebank
This was also the last visit to South Lakes as Moderator of the North-West Synod by Revd Richard Church and was an opportunity to say goodbye to him.
Our next walk on 11th May is around Kendal with Sylvia Trohear. Other things to look forward to are the Women’s Guild Afternoon tea on Wednesday 13 May, and the 40 season of Travellers’ Tales which begins on Wednesday 18 June.

There have been many exciting things happening at Cartmel CE Primary during the last term, we have had a completely new classroom built behind the school.
Lindale Primary and Pre-school Nursery
We are enjoying being able to get outside in our new play area, and Pre-school and Reception have been busy planting, learning about what our plants will need to grow and how to look after them.
Our topics this term are Traditional tales in Pre-School, Water and the Billy Goats Gruff in Class 1, Creepy Crawlies and ‘How does your garden grow,' in class 2 and Flying machines in Class 3. We will soon be starting our programme of outdoor adventurous activities for all year groups with Castle Head Field Centre.
We have had “Bible and me” lunch clubs, a rock choir after school, along with a knitting club and gardening after school club too. There have been many sporting activities taking place with Moky Kids fitness sessions, tag rugby, football, multi skills, dance not forgetting to mention kwik cricket with Cartmel Cricket Club “chance to shine” programme. The staff and children have been working very hard at Cartmel CE Primary. Eggs decorated as part of the Ulverston Canal Regeneration
This will lead onto residentials for each year group from Years 2-6 later in the term. Preschool had a fantastic visit to Greenlands Farm just before the holidays.
Flookburgh School
The whole school worked together to design bunting which will be sent to the World Wildlife Fund and presented to world leaders at the G8 Summit. As well as our usual after school clubs, we are starting a new Circus Skills club! The children have already developed lots of skills with hoops and are hoping to soon put on a show.
Mrs Brown has also been given a very exciting opportunity to visit a school in Ghana as part of a global learning initiative. We, as a school, feel enriched by the experiences she brought back.
We finished last term by celebrating Easter with an afternoon of crafts in St Paul’s church. We also learnt about the importance of caring for our environment on ‘Earth day’.
Last term we started to work on Christian values and it appears we are successfully embedding these values into our everyday life. At the end of March, the children experienced their very first dance performance at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre, as part of the Dance Platform. Thanks to Mrs. Baddiley, from Elite Dance School, for the routine, the tuition and the costumes, and to Mrs Brown for all her help. We look forward to seeing them on that stage again next year.
Year 5 and 6 children are looking forward to their school trip, which is Tower Wood this year. Reception and Year 1 children are looking forward to visiting Growing Well at Sizergh. KS2 children are going on a ‘Our Natural Environment’ trip to Kentmere, which is linked to our whole school theme for the summer term of ‘Respect for Each Other and Our Natural Environment’.

Judged outstanding Cartmel Priory CE School and Grange CE Primary School both received calls from a National Society SIAMS (Church School Inspection) Inspector on Monday 9 March 2015. The schools were inspected two days later and after an intense scrutiny of the effectiveness of leadership and management; how effective the schools are at meeting the needs of all learners; the impact of collective worship and religious education, both schools were judged to be outstanding. The Grange report praised the highly effective Christian leadership of the headteacher and senior leaders at the school, recognising that it inspires and drives school improvement. The school’s exceptionally strong and purposeful links not only with the parish church and other local Christian communities, but with the global community was also identified as a major strength. The school’s global
r
links were commended for helping provide pupils to gain a greater awareness of diversity and issues such as sustainability and justice, and for helping them understand how they can ‘make a difference’ in the world. The report also acknowledged the way staff strive to improve their practice so that the very best outcomes for pupils are possible, the outstanding behaviour and academic progress of students both being noted. “Consistently good, often outstanding, teaching meets the needs of all pupils. Pupils, therefore, make very good progress from their starting points and the standards of attainment are high”. The Cartmel Priory School report recognised the quotation from John 10:10 “I have come so they may have life and have life to the full” as being the guiding principle for all decisions made in the school. This recognises that a wide range of opportunities are available for students promoting their academic success and physical and personal well-being, as well as their spiritual, moral, social and cultural
development. The inspection report recognised that “every effort is made to help students achieve their aspirations and targets”. The school’s welcoming nature and the students’ excellent behaviour were also noted, with students who have recently joined the school saying “it feels like a second home, like family”. A focus on encouraging students to contribute to the world and make a positive difference was highlighted. The final report identified that students are encouraged to be open-minded and respect diversity and, as a consequence, people take an interest in one another so that individual integrity is respected and sensitivity shown for the diversity of belief amongst students. In a time of close scrutiny on the work of schools and increasing expectations from inspection processes, it is lovely to be able to celebrate judgement that reflects so positively on both schools, their staff, governors, parents and, most importantly, the young people of our area.

LETTERS
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor, S.L.D.C. is cutting their “Parks” budget, so there will be no funding for spring and summer plants from next year in the public gardens. I do hope the new Grange Town Council and District Councillors will discuss with S.L.D.C. too ensure Grange retains its colourful display, which are so much admired by residents and visitors. Bill Woods Grange-Over-Sands Dear Editor, I am retiring from my landscaping business in April, and I would like to thank all my customers, past and present, for the last 35 years for their support. Dave Robinson, who has worked with me for 14 years, has taken over the business under the name Copeland Landscapes. Bob Copeland Dear Editor In the April issue (284) there was a letter encouraging opposition to the planned development at Guides Farm, SL/2015/0239. The writer referred to “suburban sprawl”, “inappropriate housing”, and a “desecration of a rural and historic place”. The writer went on to say that the site had previously been rejected from South Lakelands Development Plan because of poor access. Finally he asks that “every reader of Grange Now who enjoys the amenity of this small triangular oasis of wild meadows etc” to oppose the application. None of this bears any relation to the facts. Firstly, 2 detached houses and a pair of semi's, located at A6Lane garden the corner of Carter Rd/Cart cannotflyer:Layout possibly be described as “suburban sprawl” and neither can the proposed design be considered “inappropriate”, in fact, the available drawings would suggest a very attractive development. Secondly, I would hardly describe the semi-derelict orchard area as an “oasis of wild meadows”, and certainly not an area worth preserving. Thirdly, as I remember, the initial application was to build at the top of the meadows, access via Carter Rd. Following opposition, that proposal was subsequently dropped in favour of a small development around Guides Farm itself. As Guides Farm has so little income, understandably there is no money for the much needed maintenance
and refurbishment of the existing buildings. Thus rather than just sell off a bit of land as had happened in the past, the plan is to build a few houses in the old orchard, the money for which would allow the Guides Farm buildings to be renovated. As well as meeting financial requirements, equally important, the development would result in tidying up that part of Cart Lane. Even the building of the agricultural shed will seriously clean up the area to the South of Guides Farm. In Grange, any change, good or bad, is generally greeted with automatic and vociferous opposition. But before anyone does oppose, I suggest that the details of the proposal are looked at. All is readily available online. Whilst some current developments in Grange are redefining the term “high density housing”, this is not one of them. B.Wilson, Grange

Dear Editor, As your readers are aware, we have retired from Trenouth of Grange after 30 years on Main Street. We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over A6 the years, we have been very garden flyer:Layout touched by the very kind comments, good wishes, cards and gifts we have received over the last couple of months. Grange is a special place, and we hope to enjoy our retirement on the other side of the counter supporting the many wonderful shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels, guest houses and other businesses that make Grange unique. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish 04/01/2015 20:45 Page 2 Lisa of Lakeland Optical all the very best for the future with her opticians business in our old premises on Main Street, in fact we wish all the businesses in Grange a bright and successful future. Thank you all once again, Chris and Pat Brown. Dear Editor, The Grange Prom Youth Group would like to thank all the people who have supported them in the opening of the recreation area for the second year. The providers of the new crazy golf, the fencing, the volunteers who work in the hut, and the promenade cafe for selling the tickets.

We have a display in the library until the end of the month with a leaflet designed by a volunteer. Yours sincerely, Liz Cornford, Clare Bell, Mark Hadwin, Bill Wearing and Judith Shapland Grange Prom Youth Group Committee Dear Editor, The society would like to thank all those who came to support Flookburgh and District Amateur Operatic Society in the recent world premiere of 'Just a Little War', and who were so generous in their praise of the cast, the music (so ably supported by Paul Gregson), the set and the staging of this musical written about the community, by a member of the local Society and performed by that Society. Julie Holmes Dear Editor, Some years ago Grange Now ran a useful feature called ‘Grot Spots’ which asked readers to highlight areas in Grange and surrounding villages that needed attention, accompanied if possible by a photograph. These ranged from broken seats, crumbling walls, excessive litter and dog excrement to potholes, eyesores, graffiti and vandalism. 04/01/2015 20:45 Page 2 We think it would be an extremely good idea to resurrect this feature as it did prove useful in highlighting parts of Grange and surrounds that were detrimental to promoting Grange as a good place to live and as a visitor destination. Tourism is, after all, a major part of our local economy. We would like to suggest these areas as Grot Spot material: The footpath from Albert Road to the rear of the premises forming Palace Buildings and the rear of the building. The vandalised seat in the woods at ‘Yewbarrow View’ - this has been pushed off the ledge. Major dog mess areas, e.g. Ashmount Road, Fernleigh Road, Rockland Road; there are plenty of others too. Possibly one of our newly elected councillors could take this topic on board and bring Grot Spots to the attention of the District or Town Councils. We hope you will publish our letter. Yours sincerely, Soroptimist International Grange over Sands, Environment Committee.

Grange now | MAY 2015 - Next deadline 15th May
Dear Editor, Just to let you know how much we enjoyed reading 'Grange now' delivered to Arnside households for the first time in April. An interesting publication full of local stories and useful adverts and contacts. Thank you, we'll look forward to the next edition! P and S Harrison Dear Editor, I would like to say a big Thank You to the readers who made donations of wool and money to our knitting fund, shawls of love, and premature baby clothes, see Grange Now, April edition. The baby clothes have been gratefully accepted by the special baby unit at Furness General Hospital, and the shawls continue to be taken out into the community. The little babies, the receivers of the shawls, our ladies that knit and myself would just like to say THANK YOU... Grange Residents for your kindness and generosity, not forgetting GRANGE NOW, who helped to make all this possible. Thelma Lamb Shawl Ministry.

Grange hills are alive to the sound of music...
Mr Hui of Grange is full of pride over both his son’s achievements in the world of music. Edmund and Edwin Hui are both pupils are Grange Primary School and they visited the Grange Now offices recently with arms literally full of trophies and certificates. Edmund’s latest award came courtesy of the recent Mary Wakefield Music Festival where Edmund took first in both the Margaret Armitage Cup and the Mrs Reade Melody Cup Edmund Hui awarded an outstanding first for taking part in Class 41 Piano solo (Years 4-6) for the Mary Wakefield Westmorland Music Festival. Edmund and Edwin took 1st and 3rd place in the Liz Waller Cup, 1st and 2nd in the Harlyn Shield and 1st and 2nd in the Rotary Club of Carnforth. Could Edmund and Edwin be the Brownlee Brothers (champion triathletes) of the Music world? Other children who also did well in the recent Mary Wakefield Festival included Eloise Ozanne and Holly Stephenson from Allithwaite Primary School. Year 6 pupil Holly, who only started playing the piano a year ago came 2nd out of 17 people when she played, “Just strutting along”. Holly told Grange Now: “My dad taught me to play and I really enjoy it.” Eloise, also Year 6 is a very
Wills are not sexy, are they? It’s not hard to see why when you can buy a “do it yourself” version at your local Post Office for next to nothing, get an internet based or door to door company, or employ a will writing business to draft a Will on the cheap (and charge you an annual storage fee from £5 upwards. These examples suggest Wills are simple documents in every situation and require little expertise. This is a very dangerous view to have about Wills. A Will is perhaps the most important document you will ever make. While I admit a “do it yourself” Will or a will drafted by a will writer might be appropriate in some cases, quite often they are not. Very simple matters can make a huge difference to how your Will should be structured so why risk leaving your family with issues to resolve after your death when these could have easily been dealt with by a properly drafted Will? We have seen some really stupid and ineffective Wills drawn up with a view to saving money. Short term gain, long term pain! You need to be qualified, experienced and legally trained to spot the circumstances that will drastically affect how your Will should be drafted. These circumstances can include tax, receipt of means tested benefits, family disputes and more. And you need to be open to all the other planning opportunities that come from looking at your Will. Trust planning, powers of attorney, financial reviews, all part of the same process but often skimmed over by the tick-box processes that a lot of will writing systems use. Your Will should not be trusted to someone who is not suitably qualified. The title “will writer” suggests the drafter is qualified to write your Will but it’s a bit like going to Currys in the hope of ordering a chicken rogan josh: you know what you want but you won’t get it. Don’t take chances with your Will. Make a free, initial appointment with me or one of our other qualified solicitors. We’ll look at both your financial and family circumstances in detail and then use this information to make sure you have a Will which is best suited to you. To make a convenient appointment please call Poole Townsend on 015395 33316 .

Grange Soroptimists On March 14th a team of four club members swam in the Kendal Swimarathon raising £ 460 for ShelterBox. Many thanks to the people of this area who were generous sponsors. The club members voted to increase the amount to £590 from club charitable funds to ensure a complete ShelterBox could be purchased. While the team were swimming in the relatively calm water at Kendal Leisure Centre cyclone Pam was leaving devastation on Vanuatu in the Pacific and ShelterBox were initiating the despatch of Shelterpacks and ShelterBoxes to the area, utilising the money we raised last year. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on our work and events see our website www.sigbi.org/grange-over-sands/

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild The North Lonsdale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 7th April. The group was delighted to welcome Lis Binns who introduced us to ‘Origami Twist’. Using squares of fabric we folded, tucked and twisted in a variety of ways. The resultant manipulated squares were either made into a cushion or a wall hanging. It was an extremely enjoyable class and Lis was very generous in her sharing of tips and techniques to make life easier and also safer especially on how to avoid back or muscle strain. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th of May when four of our members will be leading mini workshops on the use of Angelina Fibres, Bondaweb, Expanda Print, and burning back sheers.
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229-861800
Coffee Club In March we welcomed Rev Stephen Carling from Fleetwood who told us of many people ‘Seeking God and finding Jesus’. Stephen was born in Nigeria of missionary parents and after school worked in an Israeli kibbutz and later, Pakistan, Ghana and for many years in Nigeria largely in Borno state where Boko Haram are so active displacing 15 million people from their homes and last year killing 10,000 people.
Islam, established 1400 years ago traces its roots to Ishmael, Abraham’s son. Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam is one of the monotheistic religions. Today it’s the second largest in the UK.
Many Muslims are desperately seeking God and more have found Him in Jesus Christ over the last 15-20 years than at any other time in human history, many through powerful night dreams or other supernatural experiences.
Stephen reminded us that God has said “they that truly seek me shall surely find me”. It was good to learn this is happening today. On May 19th Coffee Club welcomes Alan and Rosemary Armstrong from Donegal who will describe how ‘Ireland Awaits’. The meeting at 10.30am at Abbot Hall Hotel is preceded by coffee and fellowship at 10am. Everyone is welcome.

Newton & Field Broughton WI Members and three guests were welcomed to the April meeting by our President.
Six members had attended the Federation halfyearly council meeting at the end of March. The speaker, from Tyneside, described the dresses worn in the ‘Jane Austen Era’ and demonstrated these with six beautiful costumes and underwear that she had made herself. Unfortunately, the evening’s speaker was unable to attend as one of his owl’s had taken ill and then died.
Members enjoyed an early cup of tea and a social chat amongst themselves. At the next meeting on May 13th the resolution for the National AGM will be discussed and voted upon. We will also hold a bring and buy stall in aid of ACWW and our own funds. Our talk will be about bees and beekeeping by member Christine Squire.

However we hope for better weather to come and hope our fixtures are able to take place. Come and collect your fixture lists so you won’t miss anything you wish to take part in. We have several Visiting Parties booked so it is as well to book your tee times either through BRS, the Pro or the office so you are not disappointed when you come down to play and find that the course is busy. Grange Lions On Easter Saturday, Grange Lions organised a collection at Booths supermarket Ulverston for "Alice's Escapes". This is a local charity that organises holidays for seriously ill children and their families. We would like to express our thanks to the staff at Booths for allowing us to do this. At our first April meeting it was voted to send a donation for victims of the recent cyclone Pam in Vanuatu in the South Pacific. We have also now finalised arrangements for a concert by VOCE, a very talented group of singers who entertained us at Christmas at St Charles's. This time the concert will be at St John's church Flookburgh so watch out for our posters and information. If anyone is interested in joining us in our fund raising activities and social events please contact: David Khan on 34252 or Peter Clough on 32048

Grange Freemasons Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 (founded 1877) meets on the second Friday in the months of September to June inclusive in the Masonic Hall Hampsfell Road Grange. Many of its members are also members of Grange Chapter No. 1715 (founded 1932) which meets there on the fourth Friday in the months of September November February and March.
The Chapter meeting on 27th March 2015 was the Annual Installation Meeting when the Principal Officers take up their offices in
a traditional ceremony. A splendid chicken dinner provided by Burneside Bakery rounded off a memorable occasion. The members and guests who attended were very complementary of the recent refurbishment of the Hall and 50 dined comfortably and in fine style. Enquiries about meetings of the Lodge and Chapter or hiring the Masonic Hall can be sent to L1715secretary@gmail.com
Trefoil Guild Barbara Ramsden gave members an insight to the many historical sites in Turkey with slides taken during an extensive journey. The next meeting will be an ‘Exploring Grange’ quiz at Hillgarth on the 11th May. Details from Molly Inglis on 33141.
Grange WI Linda Robinson recently gave an interesting talk on a scheme to help disadvantaged women in Africa. Linda set up the Goat Project in 2011 in a small village in Uganda. A woman (usually a widow) is given a goat and she then breeds from this goat. When they have 5 kids they are allowed to sell one which enables them to become self-supporting. Take a look at their website atwww.thegoatproject.co.uk for more details. On 28 May we are holding a social evening with lots of cakes to try out. New members are very welcome. Please contact Joanne on 015395 32932 for more information.
Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society In April Dennis Whittaker gave an interesting talk about the Sailing Yacht “Gondola”. He explained that it was based on a vessel called a “burchiello” not a gondola and its design is similar to the Royal Barge “Gloriana” used in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. It was designed by Ramsden and built in Liverpool by O..Jones and Quiggin, entering service in 1860. The Dukes of Cavendish and Buccleuch financed the scheme and their coats of arms decorate the bow and stern. The engine was based on railway steam engines and sited at the rear, so passengers had the views without the fumes. The first class saloon decor was based on those used in royal railway compartments. The “Gondola” was laid up during the First World War, taken out of service in 1936, eventually returning to Coniston in 1963 when it was submerged to preserve it.
In the 1970s the National Trust raised £400,000 towards restoration. Apprentice trainees at Barrow Shipyard built the new hull and the new roof was also built there. The “Gondola” was re-launched in 1980. Howard Martin’s talk “A soldier of the Great War” will be in Cartmel Village Hall, Thursday 14 May 7.30 pm.
Cartmel Art Society The programme of workshops and events for 2014/15 has now come to an end. The two final workshops held in March and April were led by tutors Heather Davies and Judith Farnworth respectively. Heather demonstrated how to create unusual watercolour effects using brushes of different shapes and sizes. Some paintings produced by our members had elements of both abstraction and reality. Judith showed us how to use techniques to create paintings using Brusho- transparent, bright watercolour ink powder. We used crayon, wax candle and bleach to create stunning effects and had fun in the process. All our workshops and social events have been very successful and enjoyable. During the summer months we shall have opportunities to meet up and paint outdoors at local venues, weather permitting and of course we shall be working hard to produce paintings for our popular Annual Exhibition in August.
Grange PROBUS Club On 13th April, Robert
Wheatley gave a talk on the Kennedys of Stonecross. He began by referring to his talk of last August in which he covered the development of the Furness area mainly due to the mining of iron and the growth of the steel industry. He went on to describe the part played by the Kennedy family. Following the death of their father, Charles and Miles Kennedy were faced with a problem. Their father had purchased a large area of land in order to search for iron ore, but without success. As Miles was an engineer he was in favour of continuing the search. This they did, discovering a deposit of high grade iron ore. Through this they achieved great wealth and were able to build particularly grand homes.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI At the April meeting of Allithwaite & Cartmel WI Christine Raafat gave an illustrated presentation about the River Lune which ranged widely through topography, history and place names. She focussed, in particular on how, through time, developments in transportation affected and transformed the land and the livelihoods of those who lived near the Lune. The ghosts of Brigantes tribesmen, cattle drovers, pack horsemen, as well as canal and railway men passed their shadow over Lunesdale. Much of the people and monuments from the past have gone from the area but it is still possible to find some traces in the landscape of the Lune. Next time we catch a glimpse of the River Lune we shall look on it - and its ghosts - with new eyes The next meeting is on Tuesday 5th May at 2.00pm when Hilary Stubbs will talk us through ‘Historical Fashion through the years’. The June meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd when Nick Henderson will bring us ‘Corio Rapters – birds of prey’. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.
Grange and District U3A The general meeting in March was our Enrolment Day, an opportunity to sign up and for newcomers to see what the U3A has to offer. The event was busy attended by 190 people including 31 new members. Current membership stands at 380. The better weather in the last month has enabled the outdoor groups to renew activities – the cycling group completed the popular circuit of Coniston Water, the walking group has been to High Rigg and Illgill Head, Wastwater and the birdwatching group had a local day on Grange prom. and went to Caerlaverock Reserve. Local Explorers enjoyed a very successful visit to the Heron Corn Mill, Beetham. Forthcoming social events include a car-rally/ quiz plus supper in June. The celebration of our 15th anniversary will include a trainWindermere boat trip-train and lunch event in June, a tea dance in a local hotel in July and an audio-visual display in the library in September. These activities together with a Chester Zoo trip and a Scottish holiday organised for the ‘Out and About’ group ensure that members have busy summer ahead. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange
On Saturday 21 March, Frank Watson from Allithwaite scored his first ever hole in one. He managed this at Grange over Sands golf club on the second hole, the 198 yard par 3. This was the first hole in one for the club this season. Frank, who has a handicap of 26 and has only been playing for 5 years, told Grange Now: “I never dreamed of getting a hole in one. I’m thrilled”.

She currently supports 40 people in this area, both adults and children, in a variety of ways, eg giving advice, seeking funding, etc." Chairman, Jane Strawbridge, thanked everyone for working so well together as a team.
