CONTENTS
Well done everyone who has revised, studied and written their SATs, GCSEs, AS or A levels.Hopefully the majority is all over and done with, as in this issue we are launching our competition to design a cover for the 25th anniversary edition. Please get involved. All the details are on the facing page. Well fathers....prepare to be treated to all manner of luxuries on the annual dad's day off - yes it's fathers day on 19th June. 'You must be joking' I hear all the female voices cry out..... As ever there is a wealth of local activity and events taking place but there is certainly a sporting theme in this issue. From horse racing to 85 year old rock climbing adventures to long distance cycling and walking. Team games feature too - see page 7. Next month we are running a special feature on summer days out. More details below. This edition is an epic and can only happen with a fantastic team effort from all at Grange Now. Thank you to them. Finally, just for the record, our stance as a community newspaper is to provide free and fair comment and to be impartial. We have a letters page where people can express their own views. Why not write in? Chris

The second Joe and Connie Calling festival took place on Saturday 14th May, and organisers, Rachel Pocklington, Sian Hunter and Nicola Elson (Joe and Connie’s Mum) did a fantastic job of pulling this huge event together.
Change of use withdrawn
On the day, the community turned out in force, not just to support, but also to entertain the crowd. First up were the youth section of Grange Operatic who entertained with numbers from their recent sell-out performance of Annie; Elite School of Dance took to the stage to showcase some energetic contemporary routines and tap numbers. It was a poignant moment as Connie was a pupil at the Elite school before she got ill. Other amazing acts included: Dance Attik, the South Cumbria Retirement Band, David Kay, Ulpha 590 and Under Dogs. At the time of going to press, we do not have a final figure of the amount raised but a portion will go to Reversing Retts, Jigsaw Children’s Hospice and the Cumbria Flood Fund.
The next collection will take place on Sunday 5th June between 1 - 3pm at St Paul’s Church, Grange. Specific items needed this time are: UHT fruit juices, pasta sauces, tinned fruit, tinned steamed puddings. Please give generously.
The new owner of the former public toilet on the prom withdrew their application for, ‘change of use’ the day before the decision was due to be made.
According to the South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) website the planning department refused the application and gave 3 reasons for doing so. If you would like to view their decision you will find it on SLDC’s website under planning application number: SL/2016/0116.
Tom Harvey Deputy Leader At a meeting in Windermere on 19th May, Grange Councillor, Tom Harvey was chosen as Deputy Leader for Conservatives on South Lakeland District Council.
At the same meeting, Windermere Councillor, Ben Berry was selected as Leader. Tom said of the appointment: "Ben and I are proud to be Conservatives. We look forward and we see not only challenges but opportunities, opportunities on housing for local people, on growing the economy and keeping our residents' Council tax down."
Joint Councillor Surgery
If you have any issues you would like to raise with your local councillors, you can do so at the next councillor surgery which will take place, at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank, on Saturday 2nd July between 2 - 4pm. In attendance will be Councillor Joanna Greenway and Councillor Peter Endsor.
Coming up next Edwardian Festival
Joe and Connie Calling
MAIN: Rachel Pocklington, Connie, Nicola and Ian (Connie's parents) TOP: Elite school of dance
BOTTOM: Grange Operatic Youth Section
Joe continues to respond well to treatment but Connie’s health continues to deteriorate, but at a much slower rate. Her smile continues to inspire us all.
This year’s Edwardian Festival will take place on Saturday 11th June, let’s hope the warm weather we had in May, holds throughout June. Organisers have told us that they plan to hold the, ‘Best Dressed Edwardian’ competition slightly later in the day, at 2pm. There is a children’s, ladies, gents and couples title up for grabs - so why not really get into the spirit of the event this year and hire yourself an outfit.
Thanks to South Lakeland District Council, you can park all day for free on Berners Close car park, then just hop on the Big Red Bus to Park Road Gardens and enjoy all the festival has to offer - there’s something for everyone.
The Festival starts at 10am and programmes are available in local shops, Grange Information Centre or on the day. Hope to see you there.

The Chartered Institute within our industry is the Personal Finance Society and the strapline they promote for individuals and firms is “Proud to be Chartered”. I qualified as both a Chartered Financial Planner and Chartered Wealth Manager several years ago but only earlier this year took up the offer of a graduation ceremony in London. I was delighted that I did since it not only gave my family the opportunity to see exactly what it means but also allowed me to reflect and appreciate exactly what the qualification and achievement means from both within the industry and how it is viewed externally. In these articles we generally talk about specific aspects affecting financial planning and rarely mention our firm and I hope that you will forgive me for doing so this time. Within the firm we have twelve full time employees of
which four are consultants who advise clients and it gives us great satisfaction to be able to say that all four of our consultants are Chartered Financial Planners. Further, our company has achieved Chartered Financial Planning Firm status. Within the firm there are also members of staff working towards this goal. At a time when the financial world is ever changing it is easy to lose sight of basic principles and foundations. Our view is that reaching the pinnacle of qualifications and coupling that with quality personalised ongoing advice and service is key. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
On top of the world at 85 Grange-over Sands resident John Daffern, at age 85, completed an epic rock climb on Scafell. John has been a keen mountaineer all his life, having climbed in many parts of the UK and Europe, and aged 79 even completed a gruelling Himalayan trek. Then, having to reluctantly admit that his strength is starting to wane, he set his heart on one last, long and high rock climb in his beloved Lake District. He selected what climbers will know as “Slingsby's Chimney Route” on Scafell Pinnacle, shown in climbers guides as grade VD**, Very Difficult, with the stars indicating a challenging and interesting route.
J P Computers Based in Cartmel Free Consultation Collect and Return service
John was assisted by six climbing friends from the Grange Group of Climbers, a group who continue to enjoy climbing in their retirement, John being their “senior” member. The walk from Wasdale Head to the base of the rock climb is gruelling enough, uphill all the way, and that’s before donning climbing harness and gear. The guidebook describes the crux of the climb as the tricky entry into Slingsby's Chimney. John managed this with ease, showing off the skills and techniques developed over many years. The finale was the very lofty, and airy knife edge ridge between the Pinnacles of Low Man and High Man, that John had to abseil off to get to the main path on the summit of

Grange celebrates St George’s Day On the weekend of 23rd and 24th April, Grange Chamber of Trade held its first St. George's Day Event, at Yew Tree Playing Fields. The weekend was a huge success with a large number of people attending on both days. There were many attractions and the children participated in races and a tug of war. Bay Search & Rescue and the Fire Brigade turned out to support the event and showed off their vehicles and equipment. The main raffle prize of £100 was won by Vicky Hicks of Grange. Running the K2B by Simon McCleery
Some people may call me slightly deranged, but once again I’ve done something active, and slightly extreme, all in the aid of charity! I have now completed the 2nd discipline of my three-year triathlon that started last September with swimming the length of Windermere (raising money for Blackwell Sailability) and now running from Keswick to Barrow, raising funds for Sight Advice South Lakes. My final epic feat will be to attempt to cycle the Fred Whitton next year! I caught the “Happy Bus” from Haverthwaite at 03.40 and at 05.30, the runners were started and thus commenced my first experience of the 42.7 mile jog to Barrow. Conditions were dry and sunny and seeing the sun-rise behind Helvellyn on the shore of Thirlmere was breathtaking. I had a great support crew in the guise of my lovely family: Amanda, Douglas and Becky, giving me encouragement and home-made flapjack (recipe courtesy of Cartmel Priory School!). The run took 9 hours and 11 minutes and there was a lovely carnival atmosphere and a wellearned pie ‘n’ peas. A huge thanks to all the organisers and marshals and Allithwaite Running Club, who helped me prepare for the epic task. As I mentioned earlier, I am raising funds for Sight Advice South Lakes, a charity in Kendal that works with blind and visually impaired people in South Lakes. They have really helped us with Douglas, who has ocular albinism, and have helped him with his transition from Allithwaite Primary to Cartmel School. If you would like to sponsor me you can find me on k2b.furness.net
Over 2000 cyclists tackled the 17th annual Fred Whitton Challenge cycle ride on Sunday 8th May including local Grange riders Simon Thompson and John Stephenson.
Tackling the Fred
Starting and finishing at the Grasmere Sports Field, the 112-mile anti-clockwise route took in all the major Lakeland passes, including Kirkstone, Matterdale, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose passes with an accumulated 11000 feet of climbing. The ride becomes progressively more taxing as fatigue accumulates and even the more gentle climbs become a challenge. A particularly cruel twist is the looming Hardknott Pass after over 90 miles of riding already completed, with its 30% gradients presenting a serious challenge to even the very strongest of riders. "The weather was another hurdle this year" said 4 time
rider Simon Thompson of Grange. “It is normally quite cool but temperatures hit 25 degrees on the day. I was hoping to break 7 and a half hours for the first time but I was really struggling with the heat by the 70 mile point and feeling sick. By the time I got to Hardknott I needed to stop for a drink at a local pub and fell asleep for an hour! I’ll have to come back again next year.”
Keswick to Barrow
When Rachael Baxter moved to Grange in 2011 with her job, a friend told her that the Blind Society were looking for a new Trustee. I enjoy volunteering and, from a selfish point of view, I also really appreciate the sense of community working with the society has given me. Only the other week a neighbour of mine had come across a piece of reading equipment which he was able to pass on to the society through me. Thank-you very much Graham!
John Stephenson of Kents Bank had a successful course debut with a creditable time of 8hrs 38 minutes. The pair are training for a multi-day cross-Pyrenees cycling event in June taking in many of the famous Tour de France climbs in 720km of riding across the mountain range from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean.
I decided to do the 42.7 mile Keswick to Barrow walk to raise funds and awareness for the charity. On the day of the walk my spirit was fairly high, no rain forecast and I was about to discover an obsession with sweets! Usually at the checkpoints walkers are treated to fruit and water. This year was a little different as there was a trough of jelly sweets - it was amazing. I am actually feeling pretty good post walk although I did use it as an excuse to do very little on the Sunday afterwards.

Cartmel AFC 66 years on and still going strong Former Cartmel keeper, Maurice Robinson called in to the Grange Now office recently to tell us about his recent trip to Hampden Park in Glasgow. While there, Maurice asked about former Queen’s Park Rangers’ player, Angus Carmichael and was delighted to be shown an exhibition board
depicting, not only memorabilia about his time at QPR but also from when Angus played for Cartmel AFC. Maurice told us: “Angus played for us between 1950 - 1952, and I was keeper at the time. He was a grand fella”. Angus, a vet, who also took part in the 1948 Olympics, died in 2013 but Cartmel AFC are still
going strong. The first team have just finished runners up in the Premier Division and some of the players are related to those who played in the 1950’s team. Cartmel have 3 teams in 3 different divisions and anyone interested in joining the club should talk to either Paul Airey or Paul Garnett 07971 310280.
Grange AFC win promotion to Division 1 Back left - Wayne Lord (Assistant Manager), Jordan Harrison, Sam Woodburn, Kyle Gudgeon, Harvey Bradshaw, Josh Wareing, Tom Woodburn, Dayle Saint, Lee Harrison (Manager). Bottom left - Dan Patterson, Michael Purves, George Hathorn (club mascot, son of Matt and Tracy at keg and kitchen), Seb Wilson, James Marwood, Stephen Bleasdale, Jamie Callon, William Anderson.
Grange AFC would like to thank everyone that has made this football season a successful one. After a couple of tough years of transition, the club achieved promotion this season under the management of Lee Harrison and Wayne Lord. The club told Grange Now: “Well done to club captain, Jamie Saunders, who has lead the team fantastically well this season, and played every game after coming back from a 2 year injury but was cruelly ruled out of the picture, and the cup final, due to an injury picked up in the game before.

We would also like to thank Matt and Tracy at the Keg and Kitchen for their loyal support and sponsorship. Without them we wouldn't be what we are today. We would like to thank all the locals who have come to games home and away this season; the number of people watching on the side has gone up massively over the course of the season. Promotion was a welcome surprise and a great achievement”. Grange have applied to enter a new 'reserve' team to the lowest division of the North Lancs Football league. If you’re interested in playing for us, please visit our Facebook page 'Grange FC'. Many thanks to all our sponsors.

Jockey turned trainer, James Moffatt During a very successful 14 year racing career, James rode 78 winners, and since turning trainer in 2003 he has taken 107 winners to victory. What does he put his success down to? “Teamwork.” Clearly proud of his team, he told me: “I couldn’t do it without them; they are all absolutely amazing; (work riders) Polly Steele, Charlotte Jones, Nadine Moffatt (James' wife), and Charlotte Dean. They always give me 100%, and I’m very grateful I’ve got them, they are always on time (early in fact) and their dedication is undeniable.” While it is wonderful to hear James acknowledge his team so readily, there can be no denying his own talents. As a National Hunt Jockey his wins included: The County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival,
The Scottish Champion Hurdle and The West Yorkshire Hurdle. He is one of only a few people who has both ridden, and trained, a Cheltenham Festival winner. Other winners he has trained in recent years include: Festival Handicap Chase Cheltenham Festival, Sefton Hurdle (Grade 1) Aintree, Brit Insurance (Grade 2) Haydock, River Don Hurdle (Grade 2) Wetherby and in December 2015 Highland Lodge won at The Becher Chase, Aintree [the same fences as the Grand National]. James told Grange Now that all his wins mean a lot but one of the most special has to be Local Cartmel Cup Winner for two years on the trot; 2014 and 2015. James said: “I was also Lead trainer at Cartmel last year and that was really special for me. I’m competing against some really big stables so it’s just really good to come out with that title and, of course, it’s my home turf.” He went on to say that last year was a great year for him: “I was the Cartmel Cup Winner, I married my beautiful fiancee and my son was born. It really doesn’t get any better than that”. On the day I go to interview him, I am directed towards the gallops, where I find James and the gang relaying the surface. He also has two strapping lads helping him out, Billy Moss (a renewable energy engineer)

James has horse racing deep in his blood; his father, grandfather and great grandfather were all racers and trainers and it was his father, Dudley, who originally built James Moffatt Racing Stables in 1985. James took over the licence, as a trainer, in 2003 and he continues to strive to modernise the ground. Dudley, amazingly, at the age of 81 still rides out.

and Sale Sharks rugby player, Sam Bedlow and, as with his work riders he has nothing but praise for these two young men. Also there, is James and Nadine’s two month old baby, Jenson James. He tells me, “Fatherhood is wonderful. I adore him. It changes everything.” Included in the daily ‘chores’ at the stables is the care of Chief Dan George, one of James most successful horses, who won 9 times over 4 years. The horse has now retired but will be kept at the stables for the remainder of life. As he told me: “He’s my mate. He’s 16 years old but he’s still a great horse and very special to me.”

Robin Webster Memorial Slideshow On Monday 25th April, about 100 people connected with Grange Primary School in some way turned out to see the "Robin Webster Memorial Slide show". It was deemed a great success, and all who came to mark their respect for all the work Robin had done in the town, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Slides were shown of activities connected with the school since 1968, incorporating the move from what was the old British Legion Building up to the new site where the school is now located on Fell Drive. Commentary was provided by Colin Milner (former headteacher and Philipa Summers (current headteacher). Latterly, Phillipa had worked closely with Robin, who was chair of governors until his untimely passing away in November last year. The slideshow was something that Robin had been planning to undertake anyway, so it was fitting to conduct it in his memory.
At the time of going to press, a total of £608 had been collected and this will be used to purchase new books for the enhanced library at the school.

Coffee Pot undergoes massive refurb
The Coffee Pot have put on display several interesting documents relevant to the building and its neighbour, Bay Villa. These include several old photographs and undated sale particulars. Owned and managed by Jona JocsonSalter and her husband Dr Michael Salter, a law professor and writer, the cafe has just re-opened after 5 months of renovations and repairs by local builder A&S Builders. The renovations include a balcony giving customers stunning panoramic views across the bay. The renovations have also mirrored the design of the rear of the historic Bay Villa, even down to the design of the new bay-windows and the ornate and intricately constructed local slate roof over the balcony. On buying the property in February 2013, the present owners created an entirely new and more hygienic modern kitchen, on the first floor, visible from the Main Street. This investment helped to secure two 5 star food hygiene certificates in 2014-5 and 2015-6 respectively. The business itself is run by Jona who was co-manager and chef of her family’s successful catering business in the Philippines. Now a British citizen, she graduated with a BSc degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT In June 2014, after working in social care for 12 years, Sarah and Philip McDonald decided to set up Bay Home Care to offer a homecare service with a difference, to their own hometown. Sarah, a former Social Worker, and Philip, a former Registered Manager, set up the company as they wanted to offer local, high quality, unique, flexible and individually tailored service and care packages, to adults who would like to remain independent at home. Phil and Sarah have slowly built up a staff team that subscribe to their core values and want to make a difference to people’s lives. Phil says “We have a lovely diverse team of care staff that are as passionate about the
standard of care delivered as both Sarah and I.”
Bay Home Care had its first CQC Inspection toward the end of last year and they were very proud to achieve “Good” in each area inspected. In February this year, having

Grange is Blooming marvellous Grange Now managed to catch the Grange In Bloom volunteer gardeners hard at work getting ready for the forthcoming judging. Group member Jan Tomlinson told us: “The Bloom Group will be replanting the tubs with summer bedding in the next couple of weeks, and we are continuing to improve the station borders. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month from 2-4pm, and if anyone wishes to join us just turn up at the station, we always welcome more help.” Judging will take place during the week commencing 1st August. The group have reduced the number of awards this year to: Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver and Highly Commended. Jan explained: “The displays are judged on visual impact and maintenance so it is very important to keep baskets well watered, especially if we have a hot spell and drying wind. Larger baskets are easier to maintain than smaller ones and If possible, take them down, and dunk them in a tub of water as this helps to water them thoroughly”.
However, we have learnt that Grange, as a town, will not be entering Cumbria in Bloom this year. A meeting was held in early May to try and get a committee together, but unfortunately no-one attended, despite many invites going out. We have been told that smaller groups or individuals can still enter for the various smaller categories.
If there are any willing volunteers out there who would like to form a committee and put together a portfolio for future years then Grange Town Council have said that they would be willing to pay the £60 entry fee. Any interested parties should contact Councillor Tricia Thomas at the Council offices in Victoria Hall.
County Matters
At the recent AGM of the Newton-inCartmel Village Hall at High Newton the local community was presented with a most pleasing report. The newly appointed committee from last year reported an increase in bookings, more improvements to the building and increased community support for the hall. I must thank Mark Jackson the Chairman and his fellow committee members for all their hard work in achieving this over the past year. Huge thanks to the communities in and around High and Low Newton for making this happen and I hope it will now continue from strength to strength. The new computer tablets, for which I arranged funding, are now fully available on a dedicated desk at Grange Library. If you have not tried to use a tablet yet please go along to the library and try them out.You will be surprised how easy they are to use to access the internet. By the time you read this column Grange Library should have superfast broadband and free Wi-Fi is also available. I have recently been contacted by many people and Town Council Members to address the increasing illegal practice of parking on pavements in the Town. I have asked the County Councils on street parking enforcement officers to work with the Police to tackle this problem. It makes walking on our pavements a very unpleasant experience and sometimes very dangerous. Kindest regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

Grange Now caught up with Lucy Cavendish (Chair of the Holker Group) and Duncan Peake (Chief Executive) recently to learn more about recent events and in particular to find out what is planned for the land south of Allithwaite Road at Kents Bank. Planning has been granted for this mixed use site to include 202 houses and offices/workshops. As you will see on the advert on this page, a consultation process is now underway as part of the development brief (this forms part of the planning guidance) in

conjunction with the local plan. The date for your diary, if you wish to take part in the consultation process, is 17th June at Abbot Hall. So who will build the houses at Kents Bank? Duncan Peake confirmed that it could well be the building arm of Holker, Holker Homes, who take the project right through to completion, with the first residents moving in as early as 2018. With over 300 employees he was keen to stress that the Holker group have a responsibility to providing affordable housing. With this is mind and in line with the local plan, 35% (around 70) homes on the new development would need to be affordable. In particular, local residents in the area have expressed concern about congestion caused by
access to the new estate if it were to be onto the side roads in the area. He said that it is likely access would need to be onto Allithwaite Road. This stretch is currently 60 mph so it likely it would have to be reduced to 30 mph. Practically, Duncan told us that not all the houses would be built at once. A more realistic target would be around 25 houses a year, depending of course on sales. Which houses would be built at which stage, affordable or otherwise, was not clear. Most recently the fabulous new Ilex Brasserie has opened along with the granting of a wedding licence for Holker Hall. This now provides a magical combination for a lucky couple of both wedding service and reception all in one fabulous location.
Development Briefs Consultations Phases 2 and 3A
South Lakeland District Council
Shaping new development and communities in South Lakeland
We are preparing a series of Development Briefs that, when adopted, will form part of the Local Plan for South Lakeland outside the National Parks. Development Briefs provide site-specific planning guidance for large, complex or sensitive sites. They are used as guidance for considering planning applications. Development Briefs will inform developers and other interested groups of the constraints and opportunities presented by a site and the type of development expected or encouraged by the Local Planning Authority. The principle of development on these sites has already been set through the Local Plan Land Allocations.
We are now inviting comments on the proposals contained in the Draft Development Briefs for the following Phase 2 sites: • North of Laurel Gardens, Kendal; • West of High Sparrowmire, Kendal; • South of Allithwaite Road, Kents Bank. Comments are also invited on the issues and options associated with the preparation of briefs for the following Phase 3A sites: • Green Dragon Farm, Burton in Kendal; • North of Sycamore Close, Endmoor. A consultation event will be held for each site to enable people to inspect the relevant documents and discuss the proposals with Development Plans Officers.

Tim’s Column One of the things I made my priority when I was first elected in 2005 was to ensure that we had proper cancer treatment facilities in South Lakeland. I wanted us to have access to a cancer treatment facility in Kendal at the Westmorland General Hospital so that people needing treatment no longer had to travel to Preston to get it. As I am sure many of you know, when you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy the last thing you want to face is an hour long journey back and forth every time you need treatment. I have heard of many people who have simply decided to stay in a hotel or guest house while they are being treated in Preston rather than having to put up with driving up and down the M6. Our campaign has achieved the major success of getting a chemotherapy unit built at the hospital which was of course a big step forward. However, that only addressed part of our need. I have always said that I would not be happy until we also have a radiotherapy facility sitting alongside. One of the final acts of the last Government was to agree to underwrite the funding of £15 million needed to build our unit. I will always be grateful to Danny Alexander for his work in agreeing this. On top of all of this a very generous person left a legacy to
Peter is currently the President for Grange Chamber of Trade, a position he has held for nearly 5 years. help fund the unit but this was conditional upon everything being agreed by the end of June.
But we still do not have the unit and if we don’t get on with it soon I worry that all of these financial arrangements will collapse and we will be forced to start again. That is why I am upping my pressure on all the parties involved. I am meeting with or writing to all of the key decision makers to demand they get their fingers out and get on with agreeing to commissioning our unit. We have waited long enough, all the money is in place all we need is for the Government to agree for it to go ahead. As ever one thing that will help me in this is knowing that I have your support. If you haven’t signed my petition then please do so, you can find it by searching for “Tim Farron Radiotherapy Petition” on the internet. Finally, whilst I remember, I know that the coverage of Grange Now is quite wide these days so although there wasn’t a local election in Grange last month there was for many of you and I wanted to thank those of you who voted for your support. Doing well in elections is the best reassurance I can get that you think I am doing the right things. As ever if I can help you with anything then please do write to me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

Walking the Great Wall of China
Do you like fun fashion and bright colours?
On 15th October, Stuart Bricklebank intends to walk part of the Great Wall of China in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK. In December 2015, the father of a good friend of Stuart, died of this dreadful disease and he would like to raise as much money as possible for the charity. He told Grange Now that he intends to pay all his own travel and accommodation expenses. Prior to leaving for the trek he intends to raise funds for the charity by holding quiz/raffle events at various local pubs. Kicking things off on 4th June: The Manor pub in Oxen Park, followed by the Rose & Crown in Cark on 24th June and on 14th July the Hope & Anchor in Flookburgh will play host to the event. Stuart said local businesses have already been generous in donating raffle prizes and Sky Dive North West have donated a tandem dive.
Natasha Lomas has turned her passion for making things into a rapidly growing business. Working part-time in Grange she spends her free time making unique, fun to wear clothes from gorgeous fabrics in bright, vivid colours. She told Grange Now: “I started making and selling my items after graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2013. I am obsessed with making things and it all started out as a hobby really. I like to make items which are fun in all sorts of bright colours and prints. I have sold items online worldwide”.

Sumptuous, glittery and virtuoso
Ladies’ Day In 2005, the Royal Ascot race was famously held in York, after the Ascot racecourse was closed for redevelopment, and this is the theme of Amanda Whittington’s play, ‘Ladies' Day’.
The play takes us into the lives of four female fish processing workers from Hull, who decide to celebrate their friend’s retirement, by going to York for Ladies’ Day. Not only funny, but in its poignant moments this play shows how important friendship and dreaming dreams is to a group of unglamorous women feeling that they deserve better. Pearl is celebrating her early retirement and plotting an assignation with an elusive bookie; Linda is a sweet, shy girl whose six-horse accumulator based on the song titles of Tony Christie (think Amarillo) could turn out to be a surprise winner; Jan is keeper of the picnic hamper whilst Shelley combines leggy glamour with

Grange Drama would like to welcome experienced newcomer, Kat Arbuckle, to the cast which includes former members of Flookburgh Opera, Sue Almond and Deborah Powell on stage and, a third, Diana Donally, on the book throughout rehearsal. The determination of actor/ director Benita Finch to get this show on the road means she is joining them too and the range of roles taken on by male stalwarts Steve Pollard and
Jim Robson has to be seen to be believed. The play opens at 7.30 pm on Thursday 9 June at the Victoria Hall, Grange over Sands. There will also be performances on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June (Edwardian Festival Day).

Spring heralds the colourful return of Prom Art Prom Art started the 2016 season on 24th April. The event was another success in terms of visitor attendance, the number of exhibitors and the entertainment on offer.
Despite the rather chilly conditions, sixty artists, crafts people and entertainers both local and from further afield, helped to launch the season with a colourful display of new and innovative work. David Pooley, the artist competition winner from 2014
Richard Uttley (piano) and Savitri Grier (violin) will perform violin sonatas by Mozart, Janacek and Brahms and Ravel's Tzigane.
Richard last played in Grange, in October 2014, and a review in The Daily Telegraph, of a performance in London the following week, included the phrases: "the predominant tone was sumptuous and glittery and virtuoso. Uttley seized the music with amazing decisiveness." Born in Bradford he studied at Cambridge University and the Guildhall School of Music and is a committed exponent of new music, frequently premiering new works.
led the field of artists, whilst the many crafters demonstrated their creativity and artistic flair. It is not every craft event which has a decorative blacksmith such as Deborah Robinson from Appleby.
Savitri Grier read music at Christ Church, Oxford and is studying for a Masters at the Guildhall School of Music. She recently made her debut at New York's Carnegie Hall and frequently performs in the Grier Trio with her father and sister.
Prom Art takes place on the last Sunday of each month until September open 10-4pm and it’s free!

Sue Mason is the newest member of the Artists cooperative which is behind the very successful Beach Hut Gallery. Set on the shores of Morecambe Bay, the gallery forms part of Kents Bank Station and affords visitors and artists stunning views across the estuary.

Sue Mason, the Beach Hut Gallery
Sue told Grange Now: “I’m delighted to be part of the team and I’m excited to be involved with the running of the gallery which is continually displaying existing and new exhibitions by a wide range of artists”. Sue produces framed paintings and canvasses, showing colourful still life interiors of flowers and ceramics featured in the foreground, with a background of remote landscapes.
The gallery was founded by Judy Evans and Beverley White, with the then secretary Denys W. Vaughan, in June 2008. With donations from The Co-operative Society NW and Northern Rail, (the train company responsible for Kents Bank Station), they were able to renovate the disused public conveniences and convert the building into the wonderful space it is today. They have grown from 2 members to 7 members / directors and continue to provide visitors with a special experience, presenting known and loved work from some of the best artists in the region, plus invited exhibitors who

The late Chris Benefield also played a key role and the gallery website says it all: ”thank you for the help and support of Chris Benefield, couldn't have done it without him.” They have a wide range of handmade artists cards at £2.50 to bespoke craftsman made furniture costing £500. Members share in the running of the Gallery from the

Duck Egg and Asparagus Salad Colour has been slow to return to the landscape this year so it is gratifying to have an energising blast of pink and white from the candy beetroot that is just coming into season. Known for its beautiful pink and white concentric rings, which turn to a delicate pink when cooked, the candy beetroot has a sweet and earthy flavour and provides vibrancy if sliced thinly and mixed through salad leaves. It is also ideal as a garnish – when grated its unique flesh patterning is shown to pleasing visual effect. Inspired by the candy beetroot’s impressive colour and taste, Low Sizergh chef, Paul Archer has chosen to partner it with plenty of fresh local produce to create a lovely lunch dish: Method
Ingredients
Wash and peel the potatoes and finely dice them. Roast with a little oil and the fresh thyme for 15 minutes at 180˚c. Wash the lettuce and asparagus. Ribbon peel the asparagus and place both on plate. Simmer some water in a pan and add the duck egg for 2 minutes (until the white is set but with a runny yolk). Add the potatoes to the salad, place the egg on the top and drizzle with dressing.

Westerley closing after 65 years Many people will now have heard the news that Westerley Christian Care Home is to close after 65 years of offering residential care in Grange. There will be a short Service of Thanksgiving at Westerley, The Esplanade, on Sunday 5th June at 4.15pm, followed by tea with the residents at 5pm. All are welcome to come and celebrate the love and care that has been given and received here throughout the years. Rev Jo Rand, Grange and Cartmel Methodist Churches.

CHURCH NEWS

Cartmel Quakers
Finding Ways Forward
Your local Quakers on Haggs Lane, Cartmel got their hearts together on Saturday 2nd April, and considered the next steps forward in their long history within this area (the birthplace of Quakerism in 1652). Over 20 Quakers from Cartmel and the surrounding area gathered together with regular
visitors, all welcomed within our worshipping community of seekers. We were joined by Friends from Edinburgh and Bolton, who came for the day to help us in this process of 'futureing'. Affirming what we value and cherish, we shared our thoughts on what Cartmel Quaker Meeting means to us and our aspirations for its future. We talked about how to grow our spiritual community and ways
of encouraging wider use of our light, airy and spacious building by others in the locality. Quakers (or, more formally, the ‘Religious Society of Friends’) believe that there is ‘that of God in everyone’, that everyone is equal, and that our faith is lived through action. You are welcome to join us in the peace and stillness of a Quaker Meeting for Worship, on Sundays at 10.45 at Cartmel Meeting House (opposite the Health Centre).
will be introducing us to soprano Avelina Wright, and we have been promised an exciting programme of popular music with a national flavour appropriate for the celebrations marking our Queen’s 90th birthday. Lunch will be served from 12 noon and the hour long concert commences at 1.00pm. Admission is £8, payable at the door and includes lunch.
Patriotic celebrations continue with a civic service on 12th June at 6.00pm and a garden party in the rectory garden from 2.00pm on 15th June. Many of you will have had the pleasure of meeting with the Rev Andrew Norman, Assistant Curate to the Cartmel Peninsula Team. Andrew joined us last year and very soon became a much loved and respected member of our church family. On June 26th Andrew will be ordained Priest in Carlisle Cathedral and at St Paul’s on Wednesday, 29th June at 6.00pm, Andrew will be celebrating the Eucharist for the first time at a very special sung service. It will be followed by a reception buffet at the back of church and all are welcome to attend this significant occasion.
St Paul’s, Grange St Paul’s has a regular Laying on of Hands for Healing as a part of our main service every three months and our next Laying on of Hands will take place during the 11am service on Sunday 19th June in the Lady Chapel during the Eucharist. Our healing ministry is for everyone and those seeking healing, either for themselves or for others, are welcome to come forward to receive this ministry in a confidential manner. On Wednesday 8th June, during St Paul’s flower festival, there will be a patriotic lunchtime concert in church. Our Director of Music, Charles Edmondson,

In 2003, Robin Webster and Penny Ward produced a booklet to mark the 150th anniversary of the Church. The booklet, a history of the Church up until 2003, has now been reproduced with a new second section, which Penny has written and compiled and which takes us from 2003 to the present day. The booklet has been produced to accompany the exhibition in Church (from 5th - 16th June) to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and it is dedicated to the memory of Robin, who sadly died at the end of 2015. To purchase a copy, at just £5, please contact Christine Harrison on 32013.
St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Parish Sadly,in recent weeks there have been a number of deaths in the Parish as well as two of the Sisters from Boarbank; all of them were characters in their own inimitable way and Grange is poorer for their passing. Their lives were suitably celebrated at their respective funerals in St. Charles and St. Cuthbert’s church as well as in the chapel at Boarbank. In a less sombre vein, the much anticipated Paris Lunch was held at The Grange Hotel on 24th April. A record attendance of 80 parishioners, including some children, enjoyed a wonderful lunch. It was good to be able to welcome Fr. Parker, making one of his now all-too-infrequent appearances at a parish event, accompanied by Canon John Watson, Chaplain at Boarbank and, of course, Fr. Aleks Makulski, Fr. Parker’s successor, who was joined by members of his family visiting from Poland. Having not had any instructional activities over the winter months, Fr. Parker, who has now taken up the position of Chairman of Churches Together inGrange (CTiG), will be leading a series of inspirational and practical sessions entitled “The Gift” based on CDs by well-known presenters such as David Payne and Charles Whitehead, which is open to EVERYONE AND ANYONE no matter which church they attend; it is, after all, being organised under the auspices of CTiG. Full details are available on our notice board and, I think, on all the other church notice boards. It’s your choice – we hope to see some of you there. Finally, whatever you do and wherever you go in the coming weeks, may the Good Lord go with you. LG.
Enjoy June!

Cartmel Priory School Fine Art and DT GCSE Exhibition
GCSE Art students invited family and friends to an exhibition. Guests were treated to a broad range of work including filmmaking, drawing, painting and mixed media pieces. Over 60 highly individual and thoughtful pieces were produced, some reflecting personal experiences and travel. Others were inspired by global issues, such as past and present conflicts, depicting the consequences of war in Germany and Britain, as well as Syria, France and Vietnam. The students deserve to be very proud of the high standards achieved and their
impressive creativity. Design Technology students exhibited their design folders and completed design solutions. Projects focused on flat pack and designer inspired storage solutions. The wide range of products on show demonstrated a high level of technique, skill and creativity. Technology and CAD/CAM and laser cutting techniques, amongst others, were employed to produce high quality work with levels of finish and accuracy found in commercial pieces. The students excelled and I was very proud to see all the projects receiving high praise.

Lindale CE Primary and Lindale Pre-school Nursery The Summer term has got off to a wonderful start with the good weather meaning that all classes have been enjoying outdoor learning as part of the curriculum. Pre-school have been doing a topic all about the seaside which has included an indoor beach and a trip to the seaside. Reception and Year 1 are learning about houses and buildings. There have been some great construction projects and wonderful writing about their own homes. Next week they are visiting Grange for a tour around a building site. Year 2 and 3 have been finding out about Britain and also learning all about the body. Years 4-6 are learning all Our Year Six children were absolutely amazing during SATs week. They were so calm and collected and approached all their tests with a hard working attitude. We are very proud of them. Nursery and Reception enjoy working in the mud kitchen. They collected different flowers, leaves and twigs and then worked in pairs to make some delectable dishes! We had daisy and twig pie, buttercup muffins and dandelion soup. Year 1 and 2 have been learning about minibeasts and are busy making paper maché models of ladybirds, grasshoppers and butterflies! Barn Owls recently welcomed a special visitor to their class his name was Sid the Snake. His owner, Sam, had previously brought in the skin that Sid had shed but we all wanted to see the real thing. Many of the children handled Sid and were interested to find he was not slimy as they had first thought. We enjoyed our reptile experience and learned many interesting facts about
Cartmel Primary
Preparations are underway to welcome Acorn Montessori Nursery School to Cartmel CE Primary in September. A large scale outdoor learning project is underway, with plans to develop our beautiful grounds to further enhance learning through play. Alongside a re-modelled mud kitchen and allotment area, we will also be making changes to include other creative play areas. The current wildlife garden will become a storyteller and reflective space, designed as a quiet place in which to hear the art of storytelling and spend a few quiet moments within a very busy day in primary school!
about our local area. We have been researching John Wilkinson and have found really interesting facts out about his achievements. Linked to that, we travelled to Manchester by train and then tram to look at bridges along the canals. It was fascinating seeing the impact of his inventions on the landscape. This was an opportunity for some sketching and following that we spent the afternoon at St Hilda’s Primary School in Trafford.
There, the children worked together to find out what is special about where they each live. We also had the chance to do PE on their sports pitches, before catching the train back to Lindale.

him – we even measured him, (it took five children and two adults to do this). He measured 175 cm, that’s much taller than any of the children or adults, in our class! Thank you to Sam and Sian for the wonderful experience. Again linking with the outdoors, our children are getting out and about in the woods with Forest Schools. Each class will be visiting this lovely setting over the summer term; to explore, create, learn new skills and get back to nature. We are also greatly looking forward to our whole school walk up Hampsfell in June. The children have been singing their hearts out in rehearsals for the La'al Sing experience in Kendal. They will be performing a dramatised version of 'Toreador' from Bizet's Carmen along with a South African working song 'Shosholoza', which the miners used to sing to keep them motivated down the mines.
Grange Primary On 10th June at 2pm we are celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday by hosting an Afternoon Tea involving all children and families, neighbours and friends, who are welcome to drop in for a cup of tea and a scone! There will be traditional sports and a special tea in the school grounds. We will also be at Prom Art on 26th June, so please drop in to see our art work. The school recently enjoyed a theatre performance, Sword in the Stone, which was a huge success, enjoyed by all including some parents. Walk to
School went well and during that week, the children joined the walking bus every day from the Health Centre, This helped to ease congestion around school and gave a healthy start to the day. Our Y3/4 sports team competed in the Partnership hockey finishing in the third place play off. Teams also performed really well at the Tri Golf tournament in our cluster. More Nursery Open mornings planned for 14th June and 4th July. If you have a child due to start nursery at some time in the future you are welcome to drop in and have a look around to see what we offer. The sessions will run from 10am – 12 noon.
Off the shelf
What a fantastic two terms we have had at Flookburgh, there has been so much going on both in school and out. Year 5 and 6 children welcomed engineers from BAE Systems to explore how to programme robots to carry out everyday tasks. This was a fantastic experience and we are grateful for Judith Mitchell's help in organising this. A group of Year 4-6 children took part in the BBC Ten Pieces musical event at The Brewery Arts Theatre, Kendal. With the help of Mrs Baddiley and Mr Napper the children performed their prepared pieces and also joined the vocal finale. The children did a fantastic job and enjoyed the evening. KS2 visited the Manjushri Meditation Centre in Ulverston to learn about Buddhism.
Flookburgh School
The whole school took part in a sponsored walk and raised £727 for the Cumbria Flood Appeal. Well done to everyone.
Well done to those who took part in the Spelling Bee Competition, Football and Tri Golf. Years 3 and 5 are
currently enjoying their Monday swimming sessions in Ulverston. Our after school activities continue to be very popular and include Cookery Club, Coding Club and Gardening Club. Please visit our website for full details of all the activities and events.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Perfect Plot with John Random Love June, flaming or not, is definitely summer and if you have an apple, pear or plum tree you (or rather the tree) may experience the unnerving and imaginatively named 'June drop'. This is when some of the small developing fruitlets (aww!) fling themselves
prematurely to the ground. There's no need to panic, this a natural thinning of the fruit, that takes place when you've had decent pollination, only a fraction of the blossom (1/20) needs to develop for the tree to be at it's maximum fruit bearing capacity. Avoid doing any of your own thinning out till they've stopped falling in case you pick any off any of
the chosen few that would make it past this stage. The weather should be fine enough to plant out climbing beans, and get your wig wams out, I made mine from a combination of Hazel sticks and willow withies, you need to soak the withies for a few days before you use them this makes them flexible enough that with a little bit of fiddling you can make three or four rings of varying sizes to tie your poles to. If you're feeling adventurous you could try and weave to poles together with the willow, it'll look rustic at it's worst.
Puddled was something that my mum used to say about me, 'puddling in' is a way of planting out leeks. 1. Poke a small hole in the ground with a 'dibber' or if you're more of a Bear Grylls type, with a stick! 2. Drop your little leek seedling into the hole (roots first!) 3. Top the hole up with water. It feels a bit callous but works well.
Unwanted plastic flower pots? Two Cartmel gardeners, Elles and Jen, would very much appreciate your unwanted plastic pots in any shape, size and colour. Please could you leave them at Chamberlain’s Shop, Cavendish Street, Cartmel.
New wildlife courses Polish up your wildlife identification skills this spring and summer with Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s new series of courses aimed at beginners and improvers.
The courses cover different topics such as spring birdsong, bird watching, tree identification, green woodworking and how to share nature with children. Tony Saunders of Ynot Coppice helps to manage Brown Robin Nature Reserve, at Grange on a voluntary basis and has an amazing outdoor wood workshop at the heart the nature reserve. Tony is offering a one-day green wood course for those interested in learning about coppicing and
getting practical by making their own wooden gift. The next course to take place in Grange is on Sunday 12th June and is called, ‘Green wood Day’. To book contact: Cumbria Wildlife Trust on 01539 816300.
The Butterflies of Brown Robin by Hon. Reserve Manager, Tony Saunders There is nothing better than sitting in a wildflower meadow on a warm summer’s day and observing a range of colourful butterflies as you eat your lunch.

In the woodland rides and glades, we should expect to see Speckled Woods, Large and Small Whites as well as Green Veined White, Comma and Holly Blue. In the wildflower meadows, we may find species such as: Gatekeeper, Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Grayling, Brimstone, Large Skipper, and the not so common; Small Copper and Wall Brown. A recent discovery is the Dingy Skipper and if you are lucky, Dark Green Fritillary or even High Brown Fritillary. The High Brown is also a new discovery on the reserve and was absent for many years.
I will be doing some moth trapping this summer and will post the pictures on the, ‘Wild about Grange’ face book group. There is a walk around the reserve on the 5th June, where I will be highlighting butterflies, weather permitting, Booking is essential and more information can be found on the Cumbria Wildlife Trust website.
Butterfly spotting in Allithwaite On Wednesday 22nd June, join the Cumbria Branch of Butterfly Conservation for an opportunity to see what they have done on the access land of Wartbarrow and how much more butterflyfriendly the area is
becoming. They hope to see Northern Brown Argus and Dingy Skipper butterflies. Meet at 1pm in Allithwaite Community Centre car park. If you would like to attend, contact Martin Chadwick: 32553 or 07722 571327 on the day.

Grange over Sands, A Property Microclimate? For years the lovely town of Grange has benefitted from a microclimate with sunnier warmer weather than other parts of South Lakes – bringing a welcome influx of visitors to enjoy the ornamental gardens and walks along the promenade. Does the Grange area also benefit from a Property Microclimate? Craig Turner Branch Manager at our newly located Grange office believes it does. “The property market over the last 10 years has suffered some turbulent times with the Property boom of 2006 – 2008 followed by a sharp recession that has created peaks and troughs in the market through to the present day. Whilst Grange did not escape entirely it was the town the Poole Townsend saw the quickest recovery in, and, definitely seems to be protected from the worst the Government policies have thrown at us.” Over the past 3 years the number of properties coming to the market has increased year on year. According to Land Registry statistics Completion levels are also on the increase seeing a 17% rise from 2014 to 2015. New build within the town is selling well and even the 2nd home stamp duty changes, which have had an impact in some of our towns seem to have had a much smaller impact here in Grange and the surrounding Villages where people often purchase a 2ndhome with a view to it becoming their Retirement property down the line. At the Poole Townsend office the team have experienced another bumper year of sales and now, like the other agents in the town are experiencing low levels of stock. National Press talk of the European referendum slowing the housing market – which in turn leads to people becoming hesitant about putting their property for sale. The reality however is there are lots of active buyers in the market place at the moment. Why wait until stock levels rise which will result in more competition for your house sale. In Craig’s opinion now is the time to get your property on the market

SOCIETY ROUND-UP
Allithwaite & Cartmel WI
The usual business was conducted with updates being given on the Spring Fayre which were very encouraging considering clashes with other events held on St George's Day. Resolutions were read out and voted on, details of Holker and Cartmel shows distributed and it was noted that Denman bursaries were available for members to state their interest. A Thank you letter from the Federation Chairman was read out. Our speaker, Laura Wyatt from Grasmere Gingerbread explained her role as ambassador to the company and presented the life of Sarah Nelson, the founder of Gingerbread, with interesting pictures dating back to early in the twentieth century. Her talk included the history and development of the product and highlighted new products now on the market.Samples of the gingerbread and rum butter were enjoyed by members and many were on sale afterwards. The business has thrived and earned Grasmere Gingerbread quite a reputation in the County, nationally and internationally with the export side of the business growing annually. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7th at 2pm when Peter Rimmer will talk about "the tide being the very Devil". New members are always welcome.
St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group
The group meet every Friday 2- 4pm in the Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, in Grange. Do you or a family member/friend suffer from cancer or a life-shortening illness? Please drop in for a friendly chat, to make new friends, and/or just to enjoy time together. More info contact Marie 33279.
Grange WI
At our last meeting we discussed two resolutions for the AGM in Brighton and our Federation Adviser, Anne Walshaw, led us through the pros and cons of each one. The first resolution was about carers attending hospital with patients suffering from dementia and the second resolution called upon supermarkets to work with charities to reduce food waste and end food poverty. The photo competition proved so intriguing that members agreed to look at the photos again next time. Members enjoyed meeting in the Father Magner Room in the RC Church on Kents Bank Road and voted to keep it as their new venue for the foreseeable future. Angela Monkman Brushett will be talking to us about working with a charity in Tanzania at our June meeting. New members are welcome – contact Margaret on 36735.

The Soroptimists are running very successful singing sessions. Anyone who would like to attend Singing for Memory, at Allithwaite Community Centre, to help their memory or speech should ring Janice on 015395 58001 or Isabel on 015395 36378. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society
Dr. Mike Winstanley gave a talk on Roughs and Respectables: the pleasures and problems of leisure. The talk examined the meaning of 'leisure' to reveal a highly complex and dynamic concept which was, and is, influenced by many factors such as age, social background, regional differences and gender. Old newspaper sources were used to illustrate the talk with many references to events in the local area. Two variables examined throughout the talk were: how the 'roughs' or lower classes entertained themselves, and how the elite or respectables either entertained themselves or were entertained. Leisure for the 'roughs' in particular seemed to attract the need to be codified and regulated as it was deemed to be problematic. This was clearly shown with reference to the part animals and birds played in Victorian leisure. The Cruelty to Animals Acts of 1835 and 1849 criminalised cock fighting, and the gambling that was associated with it, which led to it being carried on clandestinely. However the hunting of game and the shooting party became a major social event for the 'respectables' and much of the landscape in Scotland was changed as a consequence. See our display in Grange Library.
3Ps Group
The 3Ps Group has been successful in a funding bid for the Park Road Gardens. It will enable the Group to restock the Bandstand moat with water lilies in May when the temperature is right. It will also finance the replanting of the area cleared by the District Council of diseased trees near to the Clare House entrance. The park is experiencing some vandalism at the moment with the destruction of new hedging. If anyone notices this being done please could this be reported to the police. The current year's planting in the Ornamental Gardens has been completed and a number of individual trees planted at various sites in the Town to replace those removed recently by SLDC. The Annual General Meeting of the Group will be held on Thursday 9th June at 2pm in the Victoria Hall when a review of the future objectives will be discussed. All are welcome. Ron Shapland, Chairman.

Only three members of the public attended what was an open evening for all. The chairman reported that we have had another good year. The new heating system is keeping costs down and we have replaced our old wooden tables with new plastic ones. Hopefully our next project , which was to be a new kitchen, will now have to be the removal of leaking chimneys. The Treasurer reported an increase in bookings over the year. Bonus ball and revenue from our Friday library all bring in valuable funds. The Treasurer thanked all who made donations towards the upkeep of the hall, without which we could not keep the hall going. The hall is now an important community resource for all the village and all who help are to be thanked. Hire of rooms contact Barry. Tel: 59075 or 07989 596 141.

The last weeks of March included an interesting afternoon on which members selected paintings for our projected society calendar for 2017. Many thanks to those who contributed work, providing a variety of subject, medium and technique from which to choose – a tricky task! Over now to the printers. The finished calendars should be ready for sale at our annual summer exhibition in June. Our final indoor meeting of the season welcomed Andy Mortimer, who undertook to appraise paintings put forward by members. His encouraging advice and helpful suggestions were much appreciated. During April a small group of members, using their own cars, met at Salmesbury Hall and had an enjoyable day exploring the half – timbered Tudor building and the grounds, and taking full advantage of the café and restaurant. By now, all members should have received the necessary information packs about the summer exhibition entries and time – tabling for the exhibition week in June. Grange Lions
The Lions are entering a very busy period. The Summer Raffle starts on the May Bank Holiday weekend. There are 15 excellent prizes, all donated by local businesses, with all proceeds for St Mary's Hospice. We also have a street collection on Friday 22nd July, in aid of Alzheimer's Research. Hardly a week goes by without hearing of someone affected by this horrible disease. I'm sure the public of Grange will support this in their usual generous way. Plans are also underway for our annual charity golf day. Grange Fell Golf Club will host the tournament on Friday 12th August. Golfers from all over the County will take part and "tee times" can be booked through Peter Clough on Grange 32048 or with Club Secretary Derek Airey. 32356.
On 9th May, Bob Cartwright gave a talk on Red Squirrel Success in Cumbria. He began by showing that a survey in 1945 showed that there were red squirrels in the entire country except for part of the South East. The most recent survey shows that they are now limited to Scotland and a large part of the North of England. He went on to explain how the westmorland Red Squirrel organisation is working to preserve the number of reds and limit the number of greys. Grange Probus would like to make it absolutely clear that the Club has moved into the 20th Century (I know, I Know, but one century at a time!) and now welcome all retired men and women into full membership of the Club. This decision was made at the Club’s AGM in March this year. There has been an immediate response with a number of women already attending this month’s meeting. If you would like more information on the Club and its activities please contact either the Chairman ,Ken Thompson on 34898 or the Secretary, Ewen Cameron on 32319.
Grange Fell Golf Club (F)
Since the last news, we have said goodbye to Brad, our greenkeeper for over 20 years, and welcomed Adam, who has taken his place. We wish him well and hope he enjoys working on our beautiful course. The Cavendish Qualifier was won by Jill Atkinson and on 22nd April, and a brilliant night, with our Elvis tribute act, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Medal 2 was won by Ruth Wareing on a very cold, windy day and just a week later, in glorious sun and high temperatures Pam Chamberlain and Ellie Woodburn won the Peugeot Pairs Competition on a card count back. Who knows what the weather will bring in the next 4 weeks!

Grange Rotary
The Club suffered a grievous blow recently when its Chair of Youth died suddenly at a relatively young age. He worked closely with local schools and will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and fellow Rotarians. The club celebrated its 69th Charter at the Netherwood Hotel on 4th May on a lovely evening. A total of 98 Rotarians and friends joined the club in an evening of good food and fellowship. Rotarian Nigel McCulloch was the main speaker of the evening and entertained us with tales of his life as Padre of the British Legion, especially his officiating at the Royal Albert Hall Remembrance Service. President Helen Frain-Kaye thanked those who had been involved in the planning of an extremely successful evening. Work is currently afoot to present junior school children with their Rotary Dictionaries. This is an ongoing service to our local schools. Please look out for Rotarians who are holding a collection day on 28th May for the Rosemere Radiotherapy Unit at Preston. The club looks forward to a talk from the broadcaster Gordon Burns on its meeting to be held on 25th May.
Grange Ramblers
Wednesday 20th April, saw 9 members enjoying a delightful 7.5 mile walk over Cartmel Fell, we started at St. Anthony’s Church and made our way towards Lightwood and on up to Gummer’s How, here lunch was taken in the sun with view of Windermere and fells far beyond. Our return was via Foxfield and Low Loftwood where the Bluebells were just beginning to bloom, a glorious spring day made the walk just perfect. Leader: Jen Howitt. 27th April, 7 members walked the 5 miles over Dalton Crags, through a pleasant old wooded area, with sparse floral activity, due to cold winds still active on the day, although there was a promise of some improvement. From the trig point we watched the distant snow and hail flurries all around us, but none came to spoil our day. Crossed the limestone pavements cleaned by glaciers, jumping grikes landing on some weird clints, coffee at the cairn with outstanding views over the bay. A refreshing downward walk through hidden wooded dells, lunch was taken with a background scent of the woodland garlic near to Hutton Roof. Returning through fields to the start at Plain Quarry. Leader: Alan Heaton
Newton & Field Broughton WI
The meeting on 11th May was well attended and the business part included an interesting account of the talk by Lord Inglewood, on his life as a member of the House of Lords, which 5 members had attended. There was also a lovely display of willow baskets which 4 members had made on a 2 day course. Tea and cake was served before the two resolutions were read, discussed and then voted on. The final vote will take place at the AGM in London in June, when the delegates will cast the vote. A Bring and Buy stall was held for ACWW, and members were thanked for their donations to this, and also for the contributions for the WI tent at Holker Garden Festival. The remainder of the evening was spent with members making a small gift bag from paper under the expert tuition of Helen Scott. The June meeting will be on the 8th and David Ratcliffe will be talking about, ‘My extra-marital affair’. It will take place at Lindale Village Hall at 7.30pm.
Grange NSPCC
Throughout April and May supporters of the NSPCC have been busy raising funds to help protect vulnerable children in our area. One of which was Cameron Finn who took part in the "Coniston 14" mile run and raised, through sponsorship, £215 and we are most grateful for his great effort. Then, on Saturday 7th May, volunteers turned out for a street collection in Grange over Sands and reached a total of £245.35p. We would like to thank each and everyone of you for helping and contributing to this worthwhile and essential charity.

At the meeting on the 10th May the resolutions for the AGM were discussed and voted on. There were two resolutions. 1, Appropriate care for hospital patients with dementia, and 2, Asking supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary code to prevent food waste. The members voted for only resolution 1 to be put forward to the NFWI AGM in June. The next meeting is on 14th June with Professor Brian Wilson telling "Only half a story".

On our walk in April, we visited the Troutbeck area when 14 joined the party. Our guide, Andrew Lowe, ensured we kept our eyes open as various points of interest emerged en route. Our Summer outing has four seats remaining. This will take place on Thursday 23rd June. We will visit the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, where we will spend two hours. Here you may be tempted to buy a snack from Betty’s tea Shop. We then progress to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York. A NAAFI canteen is on site where lunch can be taken. Ring Alan Anderson for bookings on 015395 33696. On 26th July, Mike Hall will lead a one and a quarter hour walk at Burns Beck Moss Nature Reserve. We meet at the nearby car park at 10.30am. Ring 015395 33696 for more details. Look forward to seeing you there.

COFFEE CLUB
As expected when Dougie (Four Foot and Mouth) Gallaher spoke to us in April, he gave us a most amusing, interesting and challenging talk. Born locally in Backbarrow, he moved early to Birmingham, where his physical and medical problems led to him leaving school at an early age. However after some years he was challenged to attempt to ‘get an education’, so despite his dyslexia and epilepsy, by sheer hard study and tenacity he eventually got an honour’s degree in English Literature. He explained how his life had not been a happy one but one that has been full of joy resulting from his discovering peace with himself, with others and with God through Jesus Christ. He now spends his life helping people who, like him, have been rejected by society. Sorry if you missed his talk! On June 21st we are expecting a visit from Steve and Ros Bagwell from USA. They have worked for many years in Africa and will be talking to us about the reason for Bible Translation. Their talk is entitled ‘ Bible – Feast or Famine’. The meeting is at Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank at 10.30am preceded by coffee at 10am, to which all are welcome.
26th May. We hope to have a Walk to Chapel Island in either August or September. Keep your eyes peeled for information about this. If anyone would like to play Badminton please contact the Hall. We have quite a few badminton groups playing at the hall. If anyone would like to try Scottish Country Dancing or table tennis, then please contact the hall. We now have four new members to the committee who hopefully will stay with us. If anyone else would like to see the committee in action then just contact Rhona on 58636. Otherwise the general number for the Hall is 58304 with an ansaphone if Caretaker not available. Lastly, the Hall has various rooms including a kitchen available for hire for social occasions or group meetings.

It was all change at the 2016 Annual General Meeting in May. Malcolm Kimber stepped down as Chairman but has agreed to serve on the Committee for a further term. Roger Handley was elected as Chairman, John Eakins as Vice –Chairman and Chris Harris as Secretary. Business was concluded swiftly and was followed by Christine Squire’s stimulating presentation about beekeeping and honey production. This left many of us wondering how to change the contents of our garden flower beds and trees to make them more attractive to the bees. A full picture of the U3A’s many activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange.
Area Group WI
The area group WI meeting was held on Thursday at Cartmel Village Hall when "frolics and fun", organised by Allithwaite and Cartmel WI, was had by all after Joan Bentley opened the meeting and Jerusalem was sung, very well led by a member of Grange WI. Authors had to locate their books in a fun icebreaker which was followed by Channel Island cricket. A ’name the faces’ was placed on the tables and this was won by Grange WI, who were also the winners of the Queen charades game. Tea, coffee and tray bakes were enjoyed by all, after what proved to be a most enjoyable evening.

Allithwaite Running Club
What bizarre weather at the turn of the month? It made us consider packing down-jackets and gloves, as well as Summer shorts in our kit bags when going to a race. A few weekends ago,a recce was made of the first leg of the Lakes-in-a-day challenge (run in October). The start from Caldbeck was in glorious sunshine, but some tramping through snow Back o’ Skiddaw was required.
Now though, Spring is well sprung and the blooming of wild flowers makes for some lovely evenings out on club training nights. Shorts have been dug out from drawers and the sight and smell of a carpet of bluebells in a wood is glorious (even if ghostly white legs aren’t)! During the last month, thanks to Zoe, Heather and Howard too for their interest, and joining us on club runs, which are every Monday and Thursday, at 6.30 p.m. The usual start point is Allithwaite Community Centre, but please check the club’s facebook page in case we’re using a different venue for variety.

Banger racing
A sport not for the faint hearted! Kents Bank parents Craig and Julie Lomas have been in touch with Grange Now to tell us about their son’s success at banger racing. Adam, a pupil at Cartmel Priory pupil, became interested in the sport when he watched videos of his dad racing. Desperate to see his dad first hand, he persuaded him to take up the sport again. Then, not content with that, he got behind the wheel himself and first time out he won. Julie told Grange

Bookshop celebrates ten years in Grange Daisyroots Books celebrated its tenth Birthday during May. Grange’s second-hand bookshop opened its first local shop in Albert Mews with 10,000 books. Today the shop on Main Street Grange offers over 21,000 books over two floors. A recent and very popular addition has been the comprehensive selection of new Ordnance Survey maps.
The myth that bookshops are dying because people no longer read books is just that - a myth. Looking forward to the next ten years Daisyroots Books is actively seeking to improve and extends its stock whilst continuing to offer its customers the personal attention they have come to expect from this family run independent bookseller.

New MOT Station D.J. Marwood Car Servicing and Repair will be celebrating their 7 year anniversary on 6th June, by expanding the business and opening a new MOT station. They are now able to offer comprehensive service and repair facilities for a wide range of vehicles. The brand new designated MOT bay allow them to
test cars and vans up to 3 tonnes, and campervans up to 4 tonnes. With a handy, convenient location close to the A590 and late night openings on a Wednesday, the firm are now expanding and extra staff are anticipated. Why not get in touch with David Marwood and his team for all your servicing, repair and MOT requirements.
Parents will lend their children over £5 billion for property purchases this year, providing deposits for over 300,000 mortgages and buying homes worth GBP77 billion.
According to the survey, sponsored by the Centre for Economics and Business Research and Legal & General, parents now finance 25 per cent of all UK property purchases which makes parental loans the equivalent of a top ten mortgage lender. We see it all the time, and the problems have been worse since the financial troubles in 2008. Today I heard about the first 100% mortgage being offered again but even that relied on someone (usually parents) putting an equivalent of 10% of the purchase price in a related account to ‘guarantee’ the top slice of the lending.
There are problems with parental loans and the arrangements need to be carefully structured.
The simplest model, a straight loan, requires parents to decide whether to take a formal charge on the property (which needs the first lender’s consent and narrows down the choice of lenders) or just a separate loan agreement Such a loan can often scupper a mortgage application and some mortgage lenders insist on formal confirmation that the money is a gift and not a loan. If parents charge interest, they will need to pay tax on it.
The parents could protect themselves by taking part ownership of the property but that can have big issues. They will have to pay 3% Stamp Duty (SDLT) on the whole property and they will also risk having Capital Gains Tax (CGT) to pay on their proportion when the property is sold. And they have to get involved in the mortgage arrangements. Using Trust arrangements can work well, protects the parents’ capital against their children’s bad decisions (in love and money), avoids the extra SDLT and allows Principle Private Residence relief to avoid the CGT. That is probably the best way forward although fully protecting the Trust at the Land Registry is difficult, may need the mortgage lender’s consent (which you are unlikely to get) and so even that is not perfect.
With all this in mind, a lot of parents end up simply giving the money to their children. It is simple and effective, and are you really ever going to have that loan repaid anyway? It gets the money out of your estate for tax and care costs, and the kids will think it’s great. But what if they get in to debt or a relationship that you can see won’t last and then the son-in-law trots off with a chunk of your money? There are many things to think about and everyone has different problems and so, different solutions. Come to see us to work out what is best for you.
