Letter from the Editor

Issue 299! It is now almost 25 years since the launch of Grange Now back in September 1991. Last month we launched a competition to design the front cover of issue 300 - our 25th anniversary edition. We've received some great designs but there is still time to get your entry in. Congratulations to two local winners in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards, namely Lakeland Segway who won Tourism Experience of the year and Low Sizergh Barn for winning Taste Cumbria retailer of the year. Wednesday 6th July is a date for the diary as the BBC Antiques Roadshow comes to Holker Hall. Now where's that ming vase hiding in the back of the kitchen cupboard? See the special note below. No doubt in our next edition you'll be able to 'read all about it'. The deadline for all submissions is 15th July. Cartmel Garden Party on Sunday 17th July is another not to be missed event. Held in aid of St. John's Hospice and Cartmel in Bloom this promises to be a fabulous day out, and fancy dress from vintage to the modern era is encouraged. Cumbria Steam gathering is on July 30th and 31st at Flookburgh and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Looking even further ahead Cartmel Show takes place on 3rd August offering a perfect day out for all the family. Well done to all the Maths challengers at Cartmel Priory School. Read all about this and lots of other great achievements from local youngsters on the schools page. Talking of schools, 500 local primary school children will take part in the Peninsula Olympics on Tuesday 5th July and all the parents and families of those taking part are invited. Arnside delivery is underway again thanks to Ian at Londis. He will also have some copies on the shelf if you are over that way. Chris

Cartmel Races, Simply Red, Jools Holland, Country Fest and Holker Garden Festival - the sun shone brightly for them all. Local horse trainer, Jimmy Moffatt, lined a few wallets when Altruism and Morning Royalty romped across the finish line. Both Country Fest and Holker Garden Festival drew in big crowds and the infamous ‘terrier racing’ caused great hilarity at both events. Disappointingly, the weather did not hold out for the Edwardian Festival, but the rain didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm, and it was a great day. It was wonderful to see so many people dressed in Edwardian costume and lots of people turned out to support the event. The organisers would like to say a big thank you to Bay Community Singers who entertained at the event for the first time. A real crowd pleaser were the young Ukulele players from Allithwaite Primary School. As we’ve said before there are only four people who organise and run

this wonderful event and they could really use some help. If anyone would like to help the committee please call Pauline on 07976 898 626. Here's to next year.

Antiques Roadshow would like people to get touch with them now if they have large or heavy items, interesting collections, or objects with particularly interesting stories attached or local connections. You can get in touch by going to www.bbc.co.uk/ antiquesroadshow and going to the Share Your Story page, or by calling 0117 974 2395 or emailing directly antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk Of course everyone is welcome to go along to Antiques Roadshow at Holker Hall on Wednesday 6 July, you don't need a ticket you can just show up on the day.

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS

The changes to pension legislation which have come into force are arguably the most dramatic changes to pensions ever seen and totally change the way that we view pensions both before and during retirement. Historically, the traditional pension route was to pay into a pension and at retirement convert that pension into an annuity to provide an income for life. However, with pensions now offering instant access (from age 55) to the entire value, inheritance tax free on death and the ability to pass on unused pension funds to spouse and children (amongst other key features) pensions now have a completely different role to play in the way we accrue money during our working life and the way that we use assets during our retired life. Pensions now need to be viewed as being part of one’s overall investment portfolio rather than as a separate item. Instead of accumulating several different pensions and only reviewing them at retirement it has become much more commonplace to hold those different pensions within one master pension often referred to as a SIPP

(Self Invested Personal Pension). This provides maximum flexibility, far greater choice and gives you peace of mind that your pension adheres to current pension freedom rules. We would urge anybody with pension funds that aggregate to more than £100,000 to review what they have, whether they meet current pension freedom rules and how they interact with other investments and assets. The landscape has never been as tax efficient and flexible and you need to ensure that you are in part of that. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Peninsula Olympics

Last month, we told you about 500 primary school children who will take part in the Peninsula Olympics on Tuesday 5th July [reserve day 12th July] at Cartmel Priory School from 9am onwards. The event comes after a very successful launch 4 years ago when pupils from all 6 local primary schools (Allithwaite, Cartmel, Flookburgh, Grange, Leven Valley and Lindale) all took part in a fantastic day of sport in celebration of the London Olympics. This year Dean Barwick School, Witherslack has joined the group of schools and will be taking part in the event too. As part of the festivities a competition was launched to design a logo for the event. Ian Nicol, head of Leven Valley told Grange Now: “Judges, Dr Williams (Headteacher at Cartmel Priory) and Sally Hill (PE Teacher at CPS) had a very tough job as the quality of entries was very high and several entries were judged ‘highly commended’ so very well done to all who entered.” All parents and families of the children taking part are invited to join them for the day which will see Cartmel Priory School students assisting in the organisation and running of the day: catering, marshalling, judging etc. As Ian says: “This

is a great example of schools working together, across both the primary and secondary phases, to provide an exciting opportunity for all pupils and students on the Cartmel peninsula. I would like to say a huge thank you to all staff involved, especially PE/Sports coordinators from all the schools who have worked incredibly hard putting this event together.

Witherslack Community Shop is going to promote a local artist in the shop every month. The artist for July is John Davenport, a potter from Kendal who makes hand-built

Hopefully you managed to get to St Paul’s in Grange to see the wonderful exhibition they had put together to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday. An enormous amount of work and effort had gone into the floral and memorabilia displays. Parishioners kindly loaned precious artefacts from their own collections for the displays including: newspapers and magazines from the Queen’s wedding, her Coronation, to the birth of her children. There was commemorative china alongside plates designed by pupils from Grange Primary school. A new publication called 'Sarah's acorn' which describes the development of the parish church of St Paul's, from the dream of Sarah Clarke, a visitor from Liverpool, in 1853 to the present time. Illustrated throughout. Priced at £5 the book can be ordered from Christine Harrison 015395 32013.

Arnside delivery Many thanks to Ian and staff at Londis in Arnside as they have agreed to deliver Grange Now to around 500 homes each month. There will also be a number of copies available in the shop.

David Robinson raises £500 Customers at the Pheasant Inn Allithwaite raised £500 through sponsorship of David Robinson who completed the Fred Whitton Challenge in May this year. The money will be added to other funds raised which are distributed to charities including Macmillan, Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue, the local air ambulance services and other local charities which aid young cyclists.

Burial ground In May last year, we reported that Flookburgh Community had been given a parcel of land for use as a new burial ground. This land was kindly donated by the Wilson Family of Sandgate Farm. Flookburgh Church PCC told Grange Now: “Recently, a group of local farmers kindly donated their time, labour and materials to secure the boundary of the new burial ground free of charge. we would like to thank the farmers concerned: Frank Phillipson; Stan Procter; James Bird; Edward and Trevor Wilson; Rob/Larry Lowry; Harry and Mal Barker and John Moore. It is very gratifying to find people with such a generous spirit to help in this way and we sincerely thank them”.

It will be rolling pins at dawn on Sunday 14th August when, after judging, the wonderful bakes will be sold off, in the form of afternoon tea, to raise money for Victoria Hall. Judging and afternoon tea will all take place in the hall in what is set to be a great afternoon, full of wonderful home baking, lashings of good company and a huge dollop of goodwill. So grab your pinny and get baking. If you would like to enter there are eleven categories: Six savoury scones; Apple Pie; Shortbread; Flapjack; Decorated cupcakes; Sausage rolls; Savoury biscuits; Sweet biscuits; Bread rolls (white); Bread rolls (brown) and a Victoria Sandwich. As President, Pete Endsor, along with his fellow Chamber of Trade members, has worked tirelessly for the last 4 years to have new signage installed, in and around the town. Pete told Grange Now: “I’ve lost count of the number of times visitors to the area have asked me where the promenade is. We now have signs directing people to the prom and 19 other information boards around the town. As a Chamber, we are working hard to help the businesses of Grange and the signs certainly help with that.”

Ordinary People doing

T

his month Grange Now talks to two of the community’s First Responders about their roles, how they affect daily and family life and the challenges they face.

Peter , who owned a convenience store for over 30 years but who is now retired, has been a Community First Responder for over 10 years and Carol, a married mum of two, has been serving the community for 7 years. Grange and District Community First Responders is a registered charity and voluntary organisation. There is an Executive Committee and there are currently 12 active responders. Six of these responders are qualified to deliver Heartstart courses to members of the public, and two of them are additionally qualified to deliver training in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Their area covers approx 27 sq miles, and runs roughly south of a line from High Newton to Meathop roundabout and down to Old Park, Holker. According to figures, local responders have attended 357 incidents in the last 12 months. Responders are trained to act on behalf of the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) to deliver rapid initial treatment to life threatening conditions. These include cardiac/ respiratory arrest, chest pain, unconsciousness, collapse, choking and many other medical conditions. Carol, who lives in Allithwaite, told Grange Now: “It would be difficult to be a responder without the support of my family, all too often a meal will be delayed or interrupted, or a night’s sleep disturbed, but they know it is important to me to be available to assist when needed, even on Christmas Day, and they do whatever they can to help me to do that. Too many disturbed nights can cause some disquiet, unsurprisingly, so

members of the team try and share the overnight ‘on call’ responsibility. I work locally, part time, and have my own car and this allows me to be able to respond on a regular basis. I still go for walks and go shopping and out for lunch and go on holiday and all the usual things, but if I am near my car and available I will log on with our responder control desk and carry my pager. We are volunteers, and are under no obligation to attend calls if not convenient, but we choose to put our training and skills to good use whenever possible.” Peter is retired and lives in Kents Bank with his wife. He laughs: “Inevitably, my pager goes off just as we’ve sat down in a cafe with a hot cup of tea in front of us but my wife usually stays where she is [rather than sit in the car] and off I go to respond to the incident. She is very supportive of what I do. Many thanks to Alison at the café behind the garden centre in Cark, she regularly

clears up after pagers go off and team members head for the door, a fresh hot cuppa ready on our return”. Can you act if you see someone in difficulty? Another positive aspect is that our training has given us the skills and confidence to assist whether ‘on duty’ or not, but we cannot act as a CFR and use the NWAS equipment unless authorised by the control desk. I have assisted at falls in Grange and faints in Asda - TLC and patient positioning are useful skills which can be taken anywhere. As a responder, you are supporting your community; it may be by delivering lifesaving assistance, or if the patient is stable it may be by assessing and reassuring, thereby reducing stress and anxiety. Quite often we are known to the patient and/or their family which can result in a further reduction of anxiety. If we are available to attend calls we log on with our control desk at Broughton, and if a call is received by the ambulance service, from within our local area, we will be alerted by the pager system which we carry when on call. The pager message will give the full location address, age of the patient and the reason for attending, along with administrative info. We are not needed for all paged incidents, if the Grange ambulance is available it will be dispatched, and unless our assistance is required we will be stood down. How do you feel when your pager goes off? The pager activation initiates a wellrehearsed process of thought - Am I needed? The location? Will it be well signed? Will someone be waiting to meet me? What will I find when I get to the patient? I am also checking if I need to switch off the cooker/ iron/ tv etc before I leave home. How can the caller help? Peter and Carol both stressed how important it is that if you are waiting for an ambulance/CFR make your house as visible as possible. At night, you could open your curtains and put on as many interior and exterior lights

as possible. During the day, please leave your front door open and, where possible, have someone stand outside. Clear property names and numbers really help. All of these things help assistance to get to you as quickly as possible. Do responders support each other? We work as a team and, if possible, have at least 2 responders available all the time. We find it beneficial when attending calls and as we cover a large area it also improves the response times to incidents. We meet up every month for compulsory training, and discussion, and we have a good support network in place, from within the team, the committee and also through the NWAS management structure. We also have social events, usually involving food and drink, and ‘for fun only’ quizzes. Would you like to join the team? Peter said: “Our team is always looking for new members, especially in the outlying villages including: High Newton, Cartmel, Flookburgh, Allithwaite, Cark, Holker and any others not mentioned here. If you would like to know more about becoming a Community First Responder (CFR) have a look at the North West Ambulance Service website: www.nwas-responders.info, click on ‘find out more’ and follow the links. There is also an application form if you would like to apply. Alternatively, if you would like to talk about becoming a First Responder any of us is always willing to discuss the process with you. Heartstart courses For many years, the First Responders team have been delivering Heartstart courses (free of charge) to members of the public/business/clubs etc. Now with the Grange & District Defibrillator Scheme there are over 30 public access units in the area. We deliver a defibrillator awareness course as well. If you would like to attend one of these courses, or we can combine both in a 2 hour session, contact: heartstartsouthcumbria@yahoo.co.uk

Mia is a born leader At a recent meeting of Arnside Parish Council, Mia Crossman was presented with the Arnside Young Citizen Award. This award is in its second year and is presented to a young person in the village who has contributed to village life in a positive manner. An active member of the Arnside Youth Project for over two years, Mia began her involvement as a young leader, and is also a committee member of the older youth group, AsAP. She became a representative on both the management committee, and the activities sub-

committee, two years ago. This membership entails attending regular meetings where she contributes to the discussions, has innovative ideas and has grown in confidence as she has matured. As a young leader, Mia has planned, and run, numerous activities and has formed excellent relationships with the young people, combining respect and discipline with friendship and a good sense of humour. Mia is an excellent role model to other young people showing the qualities of reliability, honesty and trustworthiness to name just a few.

Celebrating 10 years in style As Davenports Fashions, in Grange over Sands, approaches its 10th anniversary, Julia Sawford reflects on a fabulous (almost) 10 years since her change of career from wine merchant to fashion shop owner. Since taking over, she has overhauled the shop for a more modern market, by bringing in new European designers and introducing a stylish shop refit. There is an elegance to the place far above anything you would find on the high street. A visit to Davenports would be worth it for the views alone. So it’s just as well the clothes lining the rails more than live up to their wondrous seaside setting. Davenports stocks an exclusive range of fashion pieces, from everyday shirts and dresses to cruise wear, occasion wear and wedding outfits. They only order four of each design to limit the possibility of running into someone else wearing the same thing. There might be a dinner at the golf club or a local wedding so we keep a book behind the counter with a note of which outfit has been purchased already for the occasion, so hopefully decreasing the chance

of someone else having the same dress on. Everyone comes in and gasps at the views, it just makes the entire shop such a nice place to be. People can take their time; take a seat by the window while they’re waiting for a friend or partner. Things are developing further as they have recently opened a home wear department downstairs, stocking the wonderful Gisela Graham interior collections. Davenports Boutique offers a very personal service in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere so why not pop in, have a browse and take in the lovely views.

‘Chip’ off the old block

The event, which was started last year by Grange golf pro, Ernie Foster saw nine teams taking part in the 9 hole competition.

Ernie told Grange Now: “We [Grange Fell Golf Club] organised the event for our juniors who are coached by me on a Saturday morning. The idea was to partner up a

youngster with an adult family member. It was supported not just by local golfers but also youngsters from Kendal and Windermere. Everyone had a great time and only 9 shots separated everyone. It was really close!” Craig and Kyle Davidson (Grange Fell) narrowly beat father and son, John and Henry Bolton (Grange over Sands) and father and daughter pairing, John and Leanne Kokolay (Ulverston GC) who were 3rd.

Tim’s Column I have been working hard to save the Kentmere Ward at the Westmorland General Hospital. This is the ward in the hospital for those experiencing mental health issues and, as you would expect, is a vital resource for a great many very vulnerable people in our part of South Lakeland. Without it, people have to travel to Barrow or Whitehaven and even as far as Newcastle. If you are unfortunate enough to experience mental health issues you will know that security, support and understanding are critically important to your recovery. The very last thing that anyone in that situation needs is to travel to a place they don’t know which is hard for family and friends to visit. Simply having to do this can raise their levels of anxiety and make their situation worse. The ward had a poor report from the Care Quality Commission, no reflection on the quality of care provided by the staff more a criticism of the facilities that were being provided. Something the management of the ward must have been aware of for some time as the standards of facilities expected in a mental health ward are widely known. Anyway, the

County Matters

I have been asked to look into extending the handrail in Main Street Grange from the Clock Tower down to the first shop. This will now be approximately over sixty metres long. I am happy to announce I have managed to arrange for the County Council to provide this facility with the kind permission of the owners of the wall. I hope that this handrail will be installed in the next few months. At a recent Council surgery in the Library, concerns were raised about the platform near Yewbarrow Terrace. Numerous residents have approached me as to the possibility of making this into a pedestrian crossing. I

health trust involved decided to take the opportunity of the report to announce they were closing the ward. This was decided during Mental Health Week and in the face of opposition from all of the charities and other organisations who would have to sort many of the issues resulting from the ward’s closure, something that tells us a great deal about the attitudes involved. We have been running a campaign against the proposals to close the ward at the end of June which has so far attracted over 4000 supporters. I managed to get a debate in the House of Commons on the issue which forced the health minister to become involved. As a result of all of this effort the Trust has decided to “postpone” its closure plans and at least consult properly about the need for mental health care in South Lakeland. We need to be very clear this is not a victory, it is simply a delay, we need to keep up the pressure. If you haven’t signed our petition then please do so, we need as much support as we can get. As ever, if I can help you with these or any other issues then please do get in touch you can email tim@timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support have asked the County Council Highways Team to survey this site to see what can be done to make this area safer for pedestrians. The County Council’s Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Board is setting up aTask and Finish Group looking into Autism and the provision and access for services county wide. If anyone has knowledge and experience of the services in our County and would like to inform the Group of how well or otherwise the service is working please contact me at bill.wearing@cumbria.gov and I will pass on this information to the Group. Kindest regards, Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

VISIT OUR NEW PREMISES AT REGENT HOUSE Open Mon to Fri 9am–5pm and Sat 9am–1pm

Is your home ready for a viewing? First impressions count. Plenty of people forget this when it comes to selling their home and it can have a huge effect. We’ve put together our guide of the best hints and tips to ensure your house is warm and welcoming and most importantly, sells!

First impressions - Take a step back and try to look at your home with fresh eyes. At home we’re comfortable and settled and perhaps don’t always notice the small things. From the outside can you see a neat lawn? Tidy flower beds? Empty bins? If you have one, does your doorbell work? On stepping through your front door what will be the first thing your potential buyer will see? Make sure carpets and flooring are clean, shoes are neat and there’s no piles of mail. Light - If your viewing is taking place in the day let your home be filled with natural light and open your blinds and curtains to show off your home. Alternatively, for an evening, make sure you can be found and leave a hallway or entrance light on and invite your viewers inside to a warmly lit home. Distractions - As much as we love them a home filled with family members, friends or even pets can make potential buyers feel uneasy and distract them. If possible, having just yourself in your home at the time of viewing can help viewers visualise living there much more easily. Shining - Give your home that extra shine. Make sure your home is sparklingly clean throughout. Dirty windows, skirting boards, limescale on taps and grubby floors will not make for a good impression and will not impress buyers. Odd Jobs - Full redecoration is unnecessary but it’s easy to let those small jobs add up. Peeling wall paper? Draws that don’t work or loose cupboards? Sort out the small things to show your home is well looked after. Clutter - We often don’t notice it when it’s our own, but clutter can seriously put buyers off. Make sure your home is filled with plenty of clean and tidy surfaces and make it easy for your potential buyer to imagine living in the space. If you're looking to sell your home and would like advice and support, contact a member of our friendly team today

Connie and Joe the next step The trustees of Butterfly Hugs are very proud to announce that it is now a registered charity. The next few months will involve making an action plan which will incorporate fundraising ideas and developing a system for awarding grants. Also, time will be spent trawling through legislation to ensure that the charity is run effectively, efficiently and can provide a high level of support. Initially, funding will be available to purchase equipment or services specifically related to the child. Once the charity is more established, and can benefit from sponsorship grants, we will be able to support other needs. There will be a launch party, 'Picnic in the park', which will be held in Allithwaite playground. Details will be made available very soon. Butterfly Hugs intends to set up a number of schemes that will help it make life easier to adjust to disability in the family. The first will be, 'Butterfly Hugs Approved Venues'. The scheme involves assessing tourist attractions in the area and grading them according to accessibility. Hopefully, this will make days out easier to plan because families know that the venue caters for their needs. Already in the diary is 'Joe and Connie Calling 3', which will be held on 13th May 2017. This year’s event raised a staggering £3812.26. Butterfly Hugs thanks everyone for their continued support. www.butterflyhugs.co.uk

Noticed - in 30 seconds or less Alex Murgatroyd of Grange has over 12 years of experience in HR and recruitment and she believes a great CV is crucial to get you noticed. Alex says: “On average employers and recruiters spend less than 30 seconds reading a CV, and that, in a nutshell, is what CV tree will help you to achieve; 'to be noticed in 30 seconds or less', leaving your prospective employer wanting to read more. You are unique, and your CV should be too.” Alex is passionate about what she does, so much so, that she’s started her own unique business called: CV Tree.

Mayor’s Report

As is usual in June, one of the key events has been the Edwardian Festival. I was therefore privileged to attend this delightful day and present prizes to the best dressed folk who attended. It was really good to see so many people who had taken the trouble to dress up, stall-holders and public alike. It always amazes me that such a small group of people – there are actually only four on the Edwardian Committee – can produce such an amazing day, which despite the weather was a great, if slightly damp, success. I would like to offer them a hearty thank you for what they do. The displays at the Church celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday were truly amazing. I was astonished that so much memorabilia was available in our

small town and this, together with beautiful floral displays made an exhibition well worth attending. The special Sunday evening service at St Paul’s Church to commemorate the Queen’s birthday was also something to remember, especially the display of plates designed by a number of local children. It was particularly interesting to entertain the Primary School Council members for an afternoon. They took the opportunity to debate the spending of various amounts of money, while sitting at the tables set up for the evening’s full Council Meeting, using microphones like professionals. Perhaps we have future Town Councillors among them. The next Councillor Surgery will be held on Saturday July 2nd from 2 – 4pm at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank. Tricia Thomas

Cartmel & Ulverston Community Education Centre Thank you to learners & tutors for your continued support throughout 2015-’16. We look forward to welcoming you and new learners in September. Over the years they have shared their skills and talents which learners have really appreciated. Bob with his love of art and Denise with patchwork quilting. We wish you both a long, healthy & happy retirement. New tutors will join us in September so please look out for continuing and new art courses. Also new from September will be the chance

A Chorus of Disapproval The next play in Grange Drama’s open reading sessions is Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious 1984 comedy, A Chorus of Disapproval. All play readings are held in Grange Institute on Main Street and commence at 7.30pm. The play is about the day to day activities of an amateur dramatic society staging, ‘The Beggars Opera’. Anyone can call in and, either read a part, or just have a cuppa and enjoy hearing others do so, and, best of all, there’s no charge. Benita Finch will lead the reading which will take place on Tuesday 12 July. If you cannot make the Ayckbourn evening keep an eye out for Jim Robson's Shakespeare Miscellany in August.

Where did you train to become an artist? “I am a self-taught artist and now work full time producing work in a variety of media including graphite pencil, charcoal, pen & ink, pastel and acrylics. I’ve always enjoyed drawing from a young age and feel privileged to be able to do something that I love.” What was your occupation before you became a professional artist? “At 16 I left school and became a studio assistant at a local printing firm, HSP Milners. I trained to become a graphic designer and still do some design work today.” What inspires your art? “Living and working in Cumbria, surrounded by the stunning scenery is enough to inspire any artist.” Do you only draw wildlife? “No, I produce work in a variety of subject matters including both wildlife and landscapes. I’m also available to do private commissions. My background as a designer has made me work like this. You can’t design everything using the same fonts, colours and layouts so that’s how I approach my art. It’s fun and keeps you on your toes!”

Where can your work be seen? “I am a regular exhibitor at Prom Art, the largest open air arts and crafts event in the North West, held on the last Sunday of every month between April and September along the Prom in Grange over Sands. In fact, my painting is featured on their promotional leaflets as I won their competition in 2015.” “I display my work in Ulverston’s Paper Bunny on Market Street. A new window display is going up mid-July featuring new work of British wildlife. I attend shows and events and have work throughout Cumbria; Home Images in Barrow, Coniston Fudge and G1ART in Windermere. I am also a member of Green Door.”

A spectacular finish to the Season Levens Choir’s celebratory 40th anniversary season will draw to a close with a spectacular concert of music from 19th century Germany and Renaissance Italy, when the choir collaborates with the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, a virtuoso period instrument ensemble with a host of distinguished recordings to its name. This will be their first visit to Cumbria. The resonant acoustic of St George’s Church, Kendal will ring to the sound of music by Anton Bruckner alongside masters of the Italian Renaissance. The unaccompanied motets by Bruckner are well known and popular amongst choral singers and their audiences. Less well known but even more spectacular are the accompanied ones and when joined by the trombones of this celebrated ensemble will undoubtedly ‘raise the roof’!

Grange now | JULY 2016 - Next deadline 15th JULY

The second half of the concert will feature the cornetts of the ensemble in music of the Renaissance by Claudio Monteverdi, Tomas de Victoria and Giovanni Gabrieli. Described as being ‘as loud as a trumpet and as agile as a violin’ the cornett’s bright and resonant notes will sound wonderful in St George’s. The concert takes place on Saturday 9th July at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 (no charge for students and schoolchildren), and are available from The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal.

Please describe your latest artwork. “I’ve been busy working on a new range of British wildlife pictures and am posting it on Facebook. If anyone has any suggestions of their favourite animals for future work, I’m always open to requests.” What would you like your greatest art achievement to be? “My greatest achievement is working in a job I love, as an artist. Not many people can say that about their job.” Do you have any advice for any aspiring artist to give up work and follow their dream? “Go for it! It’s not the easiest way to make a living and it doesn’t happen overnight. But if it’s your passion then follow your dreams.” www.dmpooley.com

Time for a bit of Jazz

The programme for 28 July will offer a change of pace, with two one-hour presentations on the same theme: Big Bands and their Offspring: The powerful 14/16-piece bands of the 1930s Swing Era, and the more modern sounds postWorld War 2, regularly featured small groups from within the main bands, which starred their leading jazz musicians. Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie were typical and the small groups often outdid the main bands with their jazz appeal – particularly on record. Always with a warm welcome for jazz aficionados and newcomers alike, the Society meets monthly at Bardsea’s Malt Kiln Village Hall, just along the coast road from downtown Ulverston, where it presents jazz recordings from every era, with knowledgeable commentary, on high quality audio equipment. Sessions start at 7pm, and tasty refreshments – with plenty of time for chatter – are included in the modest charge of £2. WWW

You’re the one that I want Grange Soroptimists want you (and all your friends) to come along to their ‘Singalong’ film show which, this time around, will be the great family favourite, Grease.

This is the second event of its kind, the first being The Sound Of Music and everyone who went along said it was a fantastic night and great fun. It’s not obligatory to sing along to the songs but it is great fun. After expenses, all proceeds will go to one of the Soroptimists charities: The Meru Women’s Garden Project. A member of the Soroptimists told Grange Now: “The project operates in one of the poorest parts of Kenya. Meru district has a population of 136,000. 90% live in rural areas with HIV/Aids prevalent in the region. The project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya. FOOD & DRINK

We are thrilled with the way our raw milk sales have been growing at Low Sizergh Barn, with weekend totals now reaching the heady heights of 100 litres a day. The milk, which comes straight from our cows with no homogenisation or pasteurisation involved, is creamy, tasty and nutritious, and it’s a versatile ingredient too. For instance, it can be used to make eight different cheeses. There’s something pleasing about the location of the Ultimate Cheese Making Kits, which contain all the flavourings and recipes required for your cheese-making – they can be found in the farm shop’s shippon where the cows used to be housed. Of course, raw milk also makes sharp, smooth and wonderful yogurt. Why not follow this easy recipe from ‘The Creamery Kitchen’ by Jenny Linford? The book is also available in the shippon, priced £16.99.

Sharp, smooth and wonderful yogurt Method

Ingredients 800ml Low Sizergh Barn raw milk 3 tablespoons of live yogurt

Place the milk in a heavy-based saucepan. Heat the milk gently until it reaches 85˚C (185˚F). checking the temperature with a thermometer. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes until the temperature lowers to 43˚C (110˚F). Now mix the ‘live’ yogurt into the warm milk. Carefully pour the mixture into the sterilized jar or jars. Cover and set aside to incubate in a warm place for 7-8 hours until set to your taste. The yogurt will keep in a fridge for up to 1 week.

Summer means Saltmarsh Lamb! We’re lucky enough in this part of South Cumbria to be surrounded by a beautiful, varied natural landscape and a passionate bunch of local producers and farmers! Combined, they provide us with some of the best speciality produce in the country. We want you to take advantage of this! We work hard alongside local farmers to get the seasonal specialities to you at their best. Saltmarsh Lamb is a great example of this; farmed by Harry Wilson at Wyke Farm, Humphrey Head, the lamb is available from June until late autumn. The meat

The salt levels within the nutrient-rich plants and herbs found on the estuary cause subtle changes to the meat, and rather than tasting salty, the flavour becomes light and sweet. Once it reaches our door, the meat is matured and carefully hand prepared by our butchers into a selection of traditional and continental joints, steaks and cuts. The Children’s Summer Reading Challenge begins on 9th July – a great opportunity to keep up your reading over the summer holidays, receive rewards and a Certificate on completion. The theme this year is ‘The Big Friendly Read’. To take part children need to read 6 books (but you can read more!) between July and September. Come into the Library to register any time from 9th July. You can choose any library books you like to complete the challenge. A Dementia Information Session will be held on Tuesday 5th July (10.30 am to 12.30 pm) when a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society will be available to provide advice and guidance for diagnosed individuals and their family and friends. No need to book, just turn up. South Lakeland District Council Consultation on their current Draft Development Brief is available to view in the Library. The Development Brief includes the site South of Allithwaite Road, Kents Bank. The closing date for comments is 21 July and forms to respond are available in the Library. Do you want to use a Tablet but don’t know how? We are now offering group Introduction to Tablets Taster sessions including setting up an initial account, setting up apps and how to download them along with camera functions and looking at the different settings the tablets offer. Book your name on the list and we will contact you when we have enough people to run a session. Grange Library has 6 computers connected to both mono and colour printers available for the public to use. A library card and password is required and printing is from 10 pence a sheet. Other facilities include tablets, a scanner (you will need your own memory stick), photocopier, A4 & A3 laminating and FREE wifi. If you don’t drive and struggle to find a bus going your way on the day or at the time you need, a Rural Wheels card may be the solution. Pick up a leaflet in the Library to find out more – you do need to book your ride at least a day in advance and pay a set rate of 40 pence a mile. You can also ‘top up’ your card in the Library. And finally, a request that if you consume food or drink in the Library grounds that it is disposed of in the litter bin at the front of the Library. Broken glass was discovered one morning recently and had to be cleared before the Library opened.

CHURCH NEWS

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s The series of talks, led by Fr. Parker, entitled: 'The Gift', based on CD’s by David Payne and Charles Whitehead, has continued on Wednesday afternoons Thursday evenings in the Fr. Magner Room. It has attracted a group of regular attendees. The men’s group has been meeting regularly each month at the Hampsfell House Hotel to listen to an invited speaker and then partaking of a most enjoyable buffet supper. Following the June meeting there is a summer recess until the autumn which will, no doubt, be upon us before we can bat an eyelid. “But summer has only just started hasn’t it,” I hear you groan. Indeed, it has, I agree entirely, and we have enjoyed some glorious weather for the start of June particularly on June 5th when the Social Committee invited parishioners, friends, visitors and passers-by to drop into the church garden for Sunday Afternoon Tea. The invitation brought an excellent response, the Social Committee members were “run off their feet” and everyone enjoyed a splendid afternoon of delicious homemade cakes and that most English of accompaniments a good “cuppa” in the early summer sunshine. Let’s hope we have plenty more of it this summer! Over the next few weeks I presume that many of you will be journeying off on holiday to various places, including your truly, so don’t be surprised if there isn’t a comment in the next issue – on reflexion, you might well breathe a sigh of relief! For those who are going away on holiday, travel safely, have an enjoyable break, come back in one piece and remember, whatever you do and wherever you go in the coming weeks, may the Good Lord go with you.

Time for a smile For those of you who are planning a hotel break this summer, try to avoid the one my friend stayed in – I wouldn’t say it was exclusive but even room service had an unlisted number.

St Paul’s Church, Grange

On 5th June the congregation of St Paul’s were delighted to share in the celebrating of the 50th anniversary of the ministry of Bishop Nigel McCulloch. Thirty of those years have been spent as a bishop in various parts of the country, the last of which was Manchester. He was also chaplain to The British Legion. Supported by our curate Rev’d Andrew Norman, Bishop Nigel officiated at the service and his wife Celia preached the sermon, the theme of which was “Arise, Go, Serve”. It was an uplifting occasion and after the final blessing Bishop Nigel announced that although our worship had ended, our service was beginning. Parishioners gathered afterwards at the back of the church for a glass of sherry. Team Rector Nick Ash presented Bishop Nigel with a card, and proposed the toast to him. The Bishop expressed his thanks and he then formally opened the Queen’s 90th birthday exhibition in the church.

St Paul’s celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday went very well and over 500 visitors came in to church to view the floral exhibits depicting different aspects of the Queen’s life as well as displays showing memorable milestones both in Her Majesty’s life and in the life of St Paul’s church, together with plenty of royal and local memorabilia. There was also

We hope you can join us. Our walk will be on Thursday, 14th.

Churches Together in Grange and District We are delighted to hear that Revd Andrew Norman, the Assistant Curate at St Paul's, by July, will be a fully Ordained Priest. During the stay, the children and staff participated in many innovative activities including: caving, gorge scrambling and country dancing with a twist! The children all enjoyed challenging themselves, and amazed all the staff with their resilience, perseverance and willingness to have a go at accomplishing new challenges. We feel obliged to mention that we had a teachers versus children orienteering competition where,needless to say, the teachers managed to beat the children on the final post! Whilst there, we were lucky to be visited both by our Chair of Governors;

We are back to school after the half term break and looking forward to an exciting and busy summer term. Our Friends Of Flookburgh School PTA group provided a fantastic celebration for Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday. We welcomed the local community into school and joined with staff, pupils and parents to enjoy afternoon tea. There was a raffle, tombola and guess the weight of the cake. A lovely community event that the PTA hope to repeat. Reception to Year 6 children have been working on a very special project. A competition being run by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education designed to get children involved in Religious Education through a wide variety of media, exploring a range of themes through which they can express themselves. To link in with our whole school learning theme of ‘Our Changing World‘, the last day of our half-term was Wear it Wild Day! It is a sad fact that in terms of wildlife, our world is changing for the worse. Wear it Wild Day is a nationwide event created by the WWF to encourage people young and old to think of how special wild animals are to us and to the planet.

This year, we are also piloting a Saturday morning maths session for students moving up to Year 7 in September. By the time you read this, students and parents will have attended a workshop introducing helpful online resources and providing the chance to talk to members of the Maths Department. Our aim is to assist parents in understanding the recent changes in the maths curriculum and to help them support their children at home.

The sun shone and the school grounds were decorated in red, white and blue for our 90th Birthday Celebration for Queen Elizabeth. Local residents, parents, families, members of St Paul’s and the Methodist Church, friends of the school from groups such as Rotary, all joined together with the Friends of Grange School (FROGS), the children and staff to enjoy afternoon tea and kite making. A planter competition with a royal theme was won by Nicholas Morrell in KS1, runners up were Emily Williams in KS2 with a handbag planter and Alice Walmsley KS2 with a red, white and blue container made from jeans. In June, St Paul’s ran a very successful after school craft club with a royal theme. A set of 90th Birthday plates were created by the children and formed part of the church display during the Queen’s birthday week. Y6 have been open water swimming at Windermere as part of a new initiative. Volunteers from the local fire service kindly accompanied the class to act as life-savers. This is the first of a series of sessions aimed at helping children gain confidence in the water and learn how to keep safe - and it is also great fun!

NATURE & GARDENING

The Perfect Plot with John Random Love Allegedly, July is one of the driest months of the year, I'm not sure this is the Cumbrian experience, but keep an eye out and water when necessary especially when planting out. Continue sowing salads and spinach, and look out for caterpillars and aphids, squidging them on site and keep on top of the weeds. It's probably easiest to hoe them down on a warm dry day as the heat of the sun will wilt the weeds as you go. The best technique is to keep your arms straight as possible, you can get a bit of tennis elbow if you bend your arms too much, I say tennis, as for some reason hoe elbow (elb-hoe) isn't yet an officially recognised term. You can also get on with thinning out your apples and pears. Remove as many as you can bear, and then some more. I've heard about people thinning Just over a year ago, Mike Molyneaux, a 69 year old grandad from Kents Bank, read a book about sea kayaking. Twelve months on, and he’s just undertaken the Great Glen Canoe Trail along with fellow grandad, Roger Chadwick (70) from Kendal. Their journey, which took them from Fort William to Inverness, offered up many challenges but they battled through and managed to raise an impressive £730 for Cystic Fibrosis. During their five night trip, they camped in near freezing temperatures, faced two foot waves and were upturned several times but they battled on. Mike continued: “The journey proved proved to be both exciting and rewarding. We met some lovely people and saw the

out each other’s apples as neither can bear to be ruthless enough with their own trees. It really is worth having no more than two fruits in a cluster. It might feel cruel, but at least they've got each other! It's also blackcurrant time. I love how every part of a blackcurrant bush is so intrinsically blackcurranty; the leaves, the roots, the bark - all have that gorgeous zesty, 'it's

not cat wee, is it cat wee?' smell. I love how versatile they are: jams, pies cordials and jellies, you can even make sorbet out of the leaves. The twigs, I'm sure you could have a little chew on one, but I've left prunings on the ground only to find few months later they've taken root. They are 100% dedicated to being blackcurrants, all of the time. Also you can lord it over your American family as you can't get them in the US of A.

It looks like being a bumper year this year and I've had problems in the past with overly laden branches sagging and the fruit rotting on the ground. So, don't be shy, tie the branches up, or support them from beneath. I made little crutches, it looked a bit odd, but it worked.

You could even be harvesting your first onions by this time. Wait for the leaves to bend over of their own accord, then you can lift them and leave them on top of the soil for a day or two to dry the outer skin. This will help them store better.

We would especially like to thank Colin and Rita Denby for co-ordinating the fundraising and also providing welcome encouragement.”

Celebrate the life of a loved one with a memory leaf

Have you recently lost a loved one and are looking for a special way to remember and celebrate their life? Cumbria Wildlife Trust have been in touch with Grange Now to tell us about their ‘Memory Leaf Scheme’. They told us: “You can now purchase a brass Memory Leaf, inscribed with a personalised message of your choice, to be placed at either of two peaceful nature reserves: Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve in south Cumbria or Drumburgh Moss Nature Reserve in north Cumbria.” The scheme was launched to recognise the many hundreds of gifts it has been left by supporters in their wills and has put up the brass plaques, which are in the shape of birch and oak leaves, on the boardwalk and handrails at the two nature reserves. Leaves can also be purchased in memory of a loved one for £250 and the money will go towards helping Cumbria Wildlife Trust to protect wildlife on their nature reserves. WWW

Are Butterflies just posh Moths?

Elephant Hawk Moth

Many of us only see moths when we get up in the night and put the light on and get flustered by a buzzing, flapping insect determined to burn itself on a light bulb, which can be irritating and even scary to some. Yet when we see Butterflies, we are sometimes in awe of their daintiness and colours. Moths, from my point of view, are just night butterflies. And that is the main difference, they mostly fly by night. There are few anatomical differences, such as slightly different antenna and moths are generally hairier, as you would expect, as it is much cooler in the night. But take a closer look at the moths, they are just as colourful and varied as their close relatives, butterflies. Moths come in such a range of unusual shapes and colours compared to butterflies too, and their names are sometimes very descriptive and sometimes a bit wacky! There are day flying moths too, such as the Cinnabar, a striking black and red moth , and their striking black and yellow caterpillars feed on Ragwort, The Silver “Y” moth can be seen darting around grassy area’s, so called due to having a little Y on each wing. Speckled yellow, is yellow, but speckled with brown markings. Some of my favourite moths include; Burnished brass, Swallowtail, Emerald, Beautiful golden “y”, Swallow prominent, Poplar hawk moth and Buff tip. If you would like to learn more about moths, there are usually some moth trapping events in the area organised by Butterfly conservation, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the RSPB. Booths get behind Grange in Bloom

Once again, Booths have very kindly supplied plants for, what is now known as, ‘The Booths Wall’ outside their proposed site in Grange. Planting was undertaken by Lady Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas and former consort, Jackie Bailey. Many thanks to Thomas Hargreaves, Buyer for Booths, who arranged everything.

Following the success of their first Open Day in September 2015, Grange Allotment Gardens are opening their gates to the public once again, on Sunday 31st July, from 11am to 5pm. Chairman, Bruno Gouillon told Grange Now: “We’re now in our seventh year. There are 30 plots that are mostly cultivated organically, with varying approaches to both their design and inspiration. Some plots are predominantly vegetables, with a minimum area of paths, whilst others resemble more a ‘Chelsea Garden’. We love the ethos of growing our own delicious food, fresh, and without the use of noxious chemicals, and we would be very happy to show you what we do.” To help raise funds for charity, the allotments are also being opened as part of the National Garden Scheme. Entry for adults is £3 per person, with children going free. There will be a raffle with prizes donated by Grange

Grange Garden Society

Arabella Lennox Boyd, the renowned landscape designer and plantswoman, moved to her present home, near Caton, in 1978. Her beautiful and varied garden is open to the public on selected dates throughout the Growing Year. The Garden Society has organised its own tour on Friday 1st July. Steve Halliwell, a retired police officer, author, biographer and public speaker was invited to talk to the Society on May 20th about ”Gresgarth Hall Gardens through the Seasons”. The talk did not disappoint and the members were treated to a beautifully illustrated journey. Steve has visited the garden on numerous occasions and really whetted our appetites for the visit. A mature park of 12 acres is the precursor to lavishly planted terraces leading down to a lake. Wild and Bog Garden, Kitchen garden and a Japanese bridge leading to a woodland garden give changing visual experiences. The Society is looking forward to the Edwardian Festival on 11th June, followed by a Coffee morning and Plant sale on 25th June. We look forward to seeing you there and also on Friday 17th June at the URC Hall, 7,30pm when we will have a talk on Climbing Plants by Lynn Brunetti.

Lower Holker W.I.

What a wonderful time we had at our meeting in Flookburgh Village Hall. We all had front row seats around a table to watch our speaker, Marilyn Hale, demonstrate, ‘Fused glass pendants’. We then made either a pendant or a brooch, and are now awaiting to see the results of our efforts, after firing. On this occasion our smaller group was an advantage, as it allowed each of us to have personal assistance from Marilyn. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 6th July at 8:00pm at Lower Holker Village Hall (CARK). Freda Addison will be the speaker; subject to be arranged. Visitors welcome: £3 including refreshments.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

The meeting held on Tuesday June 7th began by visitors being welcomed, followed by the singing of Jerusalem. Details of Holker entrants were given and the bag workshop had been well received by those who had attended. Members were invited to state their interest in other possible workshops. Payment for the trip to Hawes was imminent and the WI activities for the month were referred to in the newsletter. Birthday cards were distributed and Happy Birthday sung. Peter Rimmer, the speaker for the afternoon, delivered a wonderful talk aided by superb photos entitled, ‘The Tide's the very Devil’ which happened to be the title of his book. He described the dangers of the bay from different perspectives and noted changes occurring over the decades. The shrimpers and cocklers worked on the treacherous sands which were depicted clearly as ever changing. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday July 5th when the committee will provide afternoon tea for members and the speaker, Joanne Halliwell, will talk about Betsy the Scullery Maid.

Grange Rotary

The Club is currently preparing to establish the new team going forward into the year 2016/2017, when Ron Carey will take over from Helen FrainKaye as President. On 25 May, a full house was entertained by Gordon Burns who many will recall presented North West Tonight on TV for fifteen years as well as The Krypton Factor. He recounted numerous amusing anecdotes, his proudest boast being that he interviewed eight British Prime Ministers including Margaret Thatcher and Gordon Brown, during fifty years in Broadcasting.

On 8 June the Club's own Jim Needham regaled members with an interesting talk entitled: 'Fresh from Arizona'.This was Jim's swan song before departing for Alsager. A street collection over Spring Bank Holiday weekend raised £450 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation in Preston and thanks go to all who contributed.

The two winners of the local Rotary Young Photography competition from Cartmel Priory School were awarded 'Highly Commended' certificates, an excellent achievement on their first entrycongratulations to Emma and Isaac whose entries are on our website.

On 8 July the Club looks forward to its annual barbecue.

Grange Ramblers

On Tuesday 3rd May, 7 Ramblers met at Torver for 7.5 mile circular walk to Coniston, along the Walna Scar road and returning via the lakeside. The weather was bright, breezy and sunny with just a short shower on last few hundred yards. During our Annual Outing June 9th, 14 members travelled to the Swaledale North Yorkshire. Crossing high pass from Nateby to sunny hamlet Keld, coffee and cake at Rukins Farm. We followed the path below historic farm house Crackpot Hall, there were magnificent views at Swinner Gill Bridge, looking up with impressive gorge to old Lead mines. Break at the Ivelet Wood bridge which led to Muker, sat watching Sandpiper and 4 chicks bobbing around the boulders. Continuing through fields of meadows, thinking once Vikings Danes farmed this land. Perched on outcrop at Marble Scar with Gunnerside on left here we had lunch, second part of walk mainly on wooded tracks some near the river, the black clouds which had chased us finally caught up and we raced to Reeth (1 1/2 miles away) to end the day with hot tea/ coffee at the pub.12 miles wonderful Swaledale scenery with return trip via Butter Tubs, Garsdale and Sedbergh.

Grange and District U3A

Our General Meeting on 21st June took us on a “virtual” tour of the development of Blackpool with our very own Bob Lear. With “Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside” he guided us through the social history of the resort with the help of pictures, words and music. On 19th July our special summer meeting takes place at the Cumbria Grange Hotel.

This will be an afternoon of varied activities including games and a guided visit to the Brown Robin Nature Reserve, followed by Afternoon Tea. A newly established Social Events Working Group has spread the organisational load with an interesting programme already set up: ‘Fun of the Prom’ and a ‘Picnic in the Park’ on 18th August and a Jazz Night at Carnforth Station on 10th September. New Interest Groups include: Country Dancing and Grange Folk music playing group. The Environmental Awareness Group has a visit to the grey bin waste recycling centre in Barrow whilst our Landscape and Geology group has been to the Shap pink granite quarry. More details of U3A's many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites.org. uk/grange, or in Grange Library.

Newton & Field Broughton WI

There was a good attendance at the June meeting. The President drew attention to the fact that the WI had obtained 1st prize for ‘The Mad Hatters Tea Party’ exhibit, prepared by Geraldine Brierley and Pam McDonald, at the Holker Garden festival. There was another 1st, for Diane Devenish, for her delightful felted Mrs Tittlemouse in the ‘any Beatrix Potter character’ category and the group’s exhibit of a ‘Children’s Book’ came 2nd. Members were reminded of the importance of the stall at Cartmel Show, on 3rd August, as it is the main fundraising event. Schedules for entries in the Village Industries section are now available. The speaker for the evening was David Ratcliffe on, ‘My extra-marital affair’. He spoke of his interest in sport and how, in 1980, he had been persuaded to take part in a cross country run. From this humble beginning, he has taken part in several prestigious races throughout the world and had many of his winning medals on show. He has also raised considerable amounts of money for various charities. The next meeting will be on 13th July when the speaker will be Joan Merkin on ‘Plants - Poisonous and Medicinal’.

Grange NSPCC

On Saturday, 28th May, Grange over Sands NSPCC held their summer coffee morning in the United Reformed Church Hall. NSPCC supporters came and enjoyed a very pleasant social time and, due to their overwhelming generosity, raised £395. We would like to thank everyone who came and those who helped organise this successful event. We look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday, 20th August, when there will be afternoon tea and entertainment, entitled: ‘London's West End’ in the United Reformed Church Hall (tickets £6).

Grange Forum

On Tuesday 26th July, we have arranged a walk at Burns Beck Moss which is a Cumbrian Wildlife Trust Site. It is situated at Old Scotch Road (LA6 2QJ). The walk is over flat terrain and will take about one and a quarter hours. It will be led by Mike Hall. There are no toilets available. We meet at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Please ring Alan Anderson if in any doubt. Our new season’s programme will be announced in Grange Now’s September issue.

Witherslack WI

The June meeting was well attended and there are several new members. Fifteen ladies enjoyed a superb afternoon tea at Woodside Farm. On July 11th, there will be a guided walk round Kendal followed by supper at the Brewery, and on August 10th a trip to Barnard Castle by vintage coach.

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. Pat Howarth from Crosthwaite WI gave a very full and interesting report on her trip to Brighton for the National AGM. She is a newish member and it was her first time at an AGM. She said it brought home to her the value and importance of the WI movement in the country, and to sing Jerusalem with 6000 women is a truly moving experience. Both Resolutions were passed. Margaret Rankin then told us of a visit to Auschwitz with her husband. She hadn’t wanted to go but was glad she had done so, and wanted to tell others about it. Unfortunately, the speaker, Brian Wilson, who has been in hospital recently had to cancel. His talk will now be at the September meeting.

Grange Lions

By the time you read this we will have a new President in place. June 30th is the end of our Financial Year. Wednesday 15th June is our handover supper at retiring President Dave Stubbins’ house, when he will pass the baton over to incoming President Peter Ashton. Dave has had a splendid year despite our low membership. Whilst maintaining our busy fund raising calendar, he has represented us at various charter and anniversary dinners/ lunches, this together with his role as “king pin” of the real ale society, makes him a very busy man. I’m afraid there’s no rest when it comes to Lions. Dave takes over as Press and Communications Officer. One of his first reports will be to advise you the outcome of our annual quiz with Grange Rotary Club. It’s our turn to host the quiz, which will be held in the Fr Magner Rooms, at St Charles church. Drinks and a fish & chip supper should add to the enjoyment. Coming up soon is the junior 5-a-side competition, our Street collection for Alzheimer’s Research on 22nd July and our Charity Golf Day, at Grange Fell Golf Club on 12th August. The golf event is already filling up with only a few tee times left.

Grange WI

At our last meeting, we had a very interesting talk about the Pendle Witches by Terry Bond with lots of excerpts from original documents and trial proceedings. It was Terry’s birthday that same day so to help him celebrate we consumed lots of delicious cakes. We also completed the photo competition and our joint winners were Alison Teggart and Joanne Airey. Despite a wet start to the Edwardian Day in June we had lots of interest in our stall – our cakes, cookies, sweets and posies sold very well. We were also delighted to be judged runner-up for ‘Best Stall’ on the day and Christine Park collected our prize from the Mayor. Richard Matthews will be talking to us at our July meeting about being a Town Crier. New members are welcome – contact Margaret on 36735.

Grange Fell Golf Club [F]

We have enjoyed plenty of sunshine recently – even too hot for some golfers! The Coronation Trophy was won by Christine Bold, with Ellie Woodburn as runner-up. Unfortunately, the friendly match against Dunnerholme had to be cancelled because of rain. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent playing the Edna Thorley mixed greensome. It was won by Ruth Waring and Steve Wilson. The second round of the Edna Martland Trophy was won by Ronnie Hall. Eleven ladies enjoyed a visit to Lancaster Golf Club to play in their Open competition last Tuesday.

Grange Fell Golf Club [M]

On Sunday 29th we played for the Fisher Bowl won by Dave Moore with 65 net, runner up was Ken Illingworth with a 66 net, Vice Captains was the next competition won by Steve D Wilson with 40pts runner up was Brian Shepherd with 39 pts. Sunday 12th June we played the Golden Jubilee winner was man in form Dave Moore with score of 73-11-62, pipping the Treasurer Ian Campbell 86-23-63 by a shot. Coffee Club

In May, Andrew Sinclair and Chris Tiltman talked about AIDs/HIV relief in Sub Saharan Africa. Chris and Nicky, his wife, worked in the Lake Tanganyika field of Operation Mobilisation until they returned to UK because of ill health. Of the 40 million people suffering from HIV, 29 million live in Africa. Although the disease can be largely prevented and treated , people don’t want to know. Most folk live by fishing and to travel for testing and assessment means losing 10 days off work but the OM team brings a mobile clinic with battery powered equipment which can test and assess in 30 minutes. Of a local population of approx. 10,000 only 500 came for testing and just 30-40 were found to be positive. The fear is of the stigma of AIDs so education is a top priority. Screening, treatment and continuing follow up with respite centres, education and good compassionate care means that patients can soon be full active members of their community again, OM work similarly near Johannesburg and with others wherever HIV strikes in Russia, Nepal, India, Burma, Malaysia, Latin America and even in the UK. OM are doing a wonderful work of love. Next meeting: 19th July at Abbot Hall, 10.30am preceded by coffee at 10am. Everyone welcome.

Allithwaite Community Centre & Playing Fields Committee

North Lonsdale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild

On a cloudy Tuesday 14th June members arrived at Lower Holker village hall, Cark hoping for some sunshine because we were doing sun printing using silk paints. Sue Tyldesley was leading the group and she assured us we would still get a print but it would take much longer if it stayed cloudy.

Cartmel Art Society 50 Golden Years

We set about painting our fabric with water and silk paints and arranged our leaves and flowers in a pleasing manner and put it all outside. About midday the sun began to appear and members could now see their prints beginning to form before their eyes.

When the fabric was dry members removed their greenery and oohs! and aahs! could be heard as we uncovered the shapes of the leaves etc. It was quite magical the way the shapes had appeared on the fabric making very pretty prints. It was a very enjoyable day and all thanks go to Sue for explaining and demonstrating the process. Further meetings will be on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. New members are always welcome and if interested please contact Joanna Henson on 01229 861800.

Allithwaite Running Club

We’d like to say a heartfelt well done to Tina Jackson, John Douglas, Andrew Wattam & Steve Wilson for all completing marathons in the last few weeks. LETTERS

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Sir SLDC's proposals for the land south of Allithwaite Road Your article about the proposed development site south of Allithwaite Road (June 2016 issue of Grange Now) states: "...Planning has been granted for this mixed use site to include 202 houses and offices/ workshops..." This is not correct. Planning permission has not been granted for any part of this site. However, SLDC have earmarked the land south of Allithwaite Road as a development site in their Local Plan, but, because it is such a large site, their planning policy requires them to draw up a Development Brief for this site before developers can submit planning applications. This document will outline their planning objectives for the nine fields south of Allithwaite Road. The final version of the Development Brief will summarise SLDC's vision for development on this site. Future planning applications

Dear Editor, The SLDC elections in May produced very little change in the council overall. The Conservatives won a seat from Labour in Ulverston and several Lib-Dem councillors increased their majorities significantly. But the balance of the parties is nearly as it had been before. At the time of the elections, the Lib-Dems elected a new leader, Giles Archibald. We all know that relationships between SLDC and Grange have often been poor; indeed, as many of you know, the main reason for me standing as a Lib-Dem for election to SLDC last year was to try and improve that. I am glad to say that Giles, although a councillor for a Kendal ward, is an outward-looking man who has committed himself from the outset to better links with all the out-ofKendal wards. Also at the time of the elections, I was elected Vice-Chairman of the Council and Vice-Chairman of the Planning Committee under the continuing chairmanship of Mary

Dear Editor, As the current chairman of Grange Town Council I am also the Chairman of the Bay Villa Trust. This is a Trust Fund which administers the bequest of the late Thomas Oliver who owned the Bay Villa and bequeathed the proceeds of the sale of the house to be put into a Trust to be used for the benefit of the town and its people. It is a charity and Councillors automatically become Trustees upon election to the Town council. The Town clerk acts as the Trust secretary. It is

will be expected to take account of requirements set out in this document. Comments made by SLDC's planners during previous public consultation exercises, and information in their planning documents, show that they have a poor understanding of the road access and drainage problems posed by this site. In addition they still claim that a 220 metre green gap, between Kents Bank and Allithwaite, on the southern side of Allithwaite Road, will protect the separation between our two communities. Local residents see this as 'urban creep' that will ultimately lead to Kents Bank and Allithwaite becoming a suburbs of Grange-over-Sands. Anyone specific concerns about SLDC's proposals for this site still has time to register them; the public consultation period for this Development Brief is open until 21 July 2016. Valerie Kennedy, On behalf of a group of local residents

Wilson in Cartmel. Planning law and regulations since 2010 have moved strongly in favour of developers, whether individual owners, small builders or large-scale companies. The government has done this in order to encourage more building and there is some justification for that. But the new arrangements do create the danger that communities and individuals will increasingly feel that they are being steam-rollered. Mary Wilson and I will try to ensure that proper balances are maintained, insofar as we can. We are very involved in a succession of local proposals and developments and are always glad when any of you come to us on such issues. More immediately I have contributed some of my councillor allowance to the restoration of the War Memorial, which will hopefully help to keep it in the state we all want it to be in, and many of you will have been glad to see the new signage for the Promenade which SLDC has recently installed. Eric Morrell, Vice-Chairman SLDC (Lib-Dem) totally independent of the Council’s activities. Each year the Trust has a small budget for grants of up to £1000 towards small projects to benefit the town and its people. Local groups and societies can apply and details and application forms are available from the Secretary of the Trust via the Town Council office or at www. grangeoversandstowncouncil.gov.uk This money is there to be used and I would like local people to know about the possibilities it offers. Councillor Tricia Thomas., Grangeover-Sands Town Council.

LEGAL TALK With

Martin Oates Partner

FREE LEGAL ADVICE Wednesday 2–4pm Home visits available

Nasty, expensive lawyers. It bugs me that unqualified and unregulated advisers are allowed to offer cheap will services to the public in a way that suggests that lawyers are bad and expensive people whilst they are shining white knights who can solve all your Will planning issues with the swish of a laptop.

Let me give you an example. I saw a couple recently who had asked me to visit because they were worried that they had not made Wills. All they wanted to do was to leave everything to the survivor and then on to their daughter. Simple. And unnecessary. They don’t need to waste money on a Will to do that when, in their particular circumstances, that is what would happen anyway. So what did I do? Did I tell them they don’t need a Will and leave it at that? Make them a Will and charge them for something they don’t need? Answer? Neither of the above. I made myself comfy and had a long chat with them. I asked them lots of important questions surrounding their own circumstances and what they really want to achieve and I gave them a lot of really good advice. Neither of them are in the best of health and either or both of them may need long term care in future. One is likely to lose the ability to look after their own financial affairs due to a progressive illness and so this raised a better way of making Wills using trusts to protect assets, a better division of their assets between them, the possibility of making gifts to their daughter or into a Trust, and the need for Lasting Powers of Attorney. We also looked at their finances and I advised them on a basic level which of their investments were definitely ‘keepers’ due to their exemption from means testing and which they should talk to our in house Independent Financial Advisers about. I followed that up with a detailed letter setting out the options, with a full price list for each part of my advice. Some of it is quite pricey but represents good value in terms of what it gives them towards what they want to achieve.

The cost so far? Nothing. If they don’t like me or the advice I have given them then they will not get a bill. I will have been happy to spend the time with them and point them in the right direction. Having said that, I hope to see them again soon, with their daughter, to discuss next steps. So don’t fall for that sales pitch about nasty, expensive lawyers. Get really good advice, without any cost or up-front commitment.
