Letter from the Editor Over 25 years, Grange Now has delivered well over 10,000 stories directly related to the immediate area and delivered over 1.5 million newspapers; that’s roughly 36 million pages. There has been drama, good news, bad news, some big stories and many smaller ones, but all with three things in common. They were hyper local and related to this area, they were delivered to the readers for free, and they were supported by local businesses through their paid adverts. The pages of Grange Now have been used to celebrate volunteers, to promote events, applaud our heroes, celebrate artists of all ages, congratulate high achievers and tackle a huge range of issues.

On the centre spread in this issue you can read about our history in an article by Mary-Ann who many of you know was the founder and Editor for 22 years. My thanks to her for the opportunity to take on the running of this fabulous paper. Since taking over, we have developed two new papers, namely Windermere Now and Ulverston Now and we currently print 27,000 papers a month across the 3 titles. No plans to start any more in case you were wondering. So now is the moment to say thank you to all our readers for their involvement, comments, letters, society, school and church reports. Thank you to everyone who has worked on the paper and helped to deliver it, and a huge thank you to all the local businesses who have given loyal support. Indeed, there are eight advertisers who have been in almost every issue dating back to 1991. But of course the most important round of applause goes to
As we celebrate 25 years of Grange Now in this 300th edition, it is interesting to think about what makes it such a great paper to work on. The answer for me is the people who do little things in the community, often unnoticed, but which make such a difference. Small acts of kindness, keeping an eye out, helping with the look of the area or volunteering in some way or other. When you come across those type of stories in the office it makes all the staff smile and spurs us all on. Congratulations to our top eight in the front cover competition. In particular Beth H. of Cartmel Primary who designed our fabulous and colourful front cover. On with the show. Chris.

Cartmel Surgery is outstanding - it’s official
IN BRIEF Tesco to start work soon Grange Now contacted Tesco in respect of their proposed new store on the British legion site. We understand that work will start in August and, once completed in November. will create 20 new jobs. Tesco spokesperson Mark Thomas told Grange Now: “We’re happy to be starting work to build our store for the Grange-over-Sands community in August and we’ll be sure to be a good neighbour as we commence construction. We’re really looking forward to welcoming people to the store later in the year and to creating new jobs in Grange-over-Sands.”
Artist in the shop
Basketmaker, Jane Bradley is the artist this month in Witherslack Community Shop. Jane was taught how to weave Maori flax baskets in New Zealand, and has been weaving ever since. She lives in Witherslack and she grows the willow with friends after trips to Somerset to collect rushes. In 2014, her rush bag won the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers Best Basket Award.
Following a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection earlier this year, Cartmel Surgery are thrilled to have been rated ‘Overall Outstanding’.
The practice, run by husband and wife team Dr Simon Milligan and Dr Heather Lovatt, has been going since 1993 and has seen quite a few changes including a move to their spacious new practice on Haggs Lane. According to latest figures on the CQC’s website, under 4% of all inspected practices (169 out of 4,400) have been rated outstanding, so it is by no means easy to achieve. The Practice was rated Outstanding in several areas including: Patients said they found it easy to make an appointment with a named GP and there was continuity of care, with urgent appointments available the same day. For example, 100% of patients said that the last time they wanted to see or speak to a GP or nurse from their GP surgery they were able to get an appointment (national average 76%). 100% of patients said they could get through easily to the

practice by phone compared to the national average of 73%.
There is a weekly walking group to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents. The practice has good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs. Information about how to complain was available and easy to understand and evidence showed the practice responded quickly to issues raised. Patients said they were truly respected and valued as individuals and were
empowered as partners in their care. Patient satisfaction with their care was much higher than local and national averages. For example,in the National GP Patient Survey 97% of patients said the last GP they saw was good at involving them in decisions about their care, compared to the national average of 82%. The full report can be seen on the Care Quality Commission’s website. Congratulations to Dr Milligan, Dr Lovatt, Practice Manager Janice Longmire and the hardworking team at Cartmel Surgery.

Gold medal event Watching over five hundred primary school children doing a zumba dance, en-masse, was quite a spectacular sight. The energetic dance routine followed an ‘Olympic procession’ when children from 7 local schools hoisted the flags for their ‘nation’ high above their heads and made their way to the Olympic podium, to the beat of Cartmel Priory School’s (CPS) samba band. The procession was led by Jim Lavin and England under 17’s footballer, Kelsey Pearson. I was, of course, watching the fantastic start to the Peninsula Olympics, the second time this event has been held, the first being 2012 when London hosted the Olympics. The event came together under the expert leadership of Leven Valley Headteacher, Ian Nicol, and he would like to thank Dr Williams, Headteacher at CPS, and all his staff and students for: “providing the samba band, trophies, catering, running the athletics events, and hosting us all in such good humour”. He went on to say: “The reason it was so successful is thanks to the
Heads from all 7 primary schools who worked together and put in many hours leading up to the event.” Sally Hill, [PE teacher at CPS] did a huge amount of work organising the taster sports sessions with the local clubs and co-ordinating the athletics events with the CPS students. The schools are also grateful to Judith Mitchell for all her hard work with fundraising and publicity. The sponsors are too many to mention here but the schools are extremely grateful to them all. The main sponsors of the event were Poole Townsend and Lakeland Ltd. Craig Turner from Poole Townsend gave out the trophies to the winners of the infant races while Lucy Cavendish of Holker Hall gave the Juniors their prizes. The hosting of the Peninsular Olympics was made possible thanks to funding from Poole Townsend, Lakeland Ltd, the Charles Godwin Trust, Taylor Hibbert Trust, Grange Lions, CGP, Grange Rotary, Cumbria Active, Holker Estates, Michelle Jurd Trust and Grange Council.
MAIN: Olympic procession INSET TOP: Allithwaite juniors relay team INSET BOTTOM: CPS samba band
Overall junior winners were Grange Primary ‘A’ team, with Allithwaite second and Flookburgh third. For the infants it was once again Grange in the top spot, followed by Cartmel and Flookburgh.
Flookburgh Children Wade in to Help
Tony Burbridge with representatives of Flookburgh Primary
Following the January floods, the children of Flookburgh Primary decided to get together to see what they could to help. Teacher, Mr Napper, told Grange Now: “Throughout the Spring term, the whole school focus was on the Christian value of Compassion; what better way to show this than through helping those in trouble on our doorstep. The children agreed that we could raise money quickly and easily by undertaking a whole school sponsored walk through the local area.
Our walk took place on the 23rd March, and our children were supported on their adventure by many members of the local community who gave up their time to be with us. In total, our children managed to raise an impressive sum of £727.50.” On 24th June, the school’s donation was gratefully received by Mr. Tony Burbridge on behalf of the Cumbria Flood Appeal. Flookburgh Primary hopes that their contribution will assist those affected by the floods in getting their homes and businesses back to as they wish them to be. info@grangenow.co.uk

Working with Autism... I’m Harry Fenton and I am a budding journalist and I’ve just finished a week’s work experience with Grange Now and worked on various articles with them. I am a Third Year History and Politics student at Lancaster University who regularly contributes to the Lancaster University Student Union paper (SCAN) I also write a blog on Autism.
A
utism affects over 1 in 100 people in the UK including myself and it’s only very recently that people have become aware of it. I’m sure there are lots of people in the area with it, and it affects the lives of their friends and family in some way or another. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability affecting how people communicate with, and relate to, others. It’s also a spectrum condition so different people are affected by autism in different ways so there’s no such thing as a typical autistic person. Fortunately, my life with autism has been very successful; going from a 3 year old boy who couldn’t even speak to a being a 20 year old University student, although I’ve overcome my fair share of challenges because of my condition. It began when I was diagnosed with Autism. There was a lot of fundraising on the part of my family to be able to fund my specialist teaching programme known as the LOVASS model of applied behavioural analysis. This involved a high level of intervention and involved breaking down into manageable pieces and then building upon those skills. I
responded to the programme very quickly and any doubts people had about its effectiveness were gone. When I started school a year later, I was always with one of my home tutors who carried out the programme and helped me at school. At first, I was home taught half the time and the programme was so successful when I was in Year 4, I could manage school full time and came out of primary school with very good grades. However, I had no social skills so I only made a couple of friends, largely because of my autism setting me apart from everyone else. It was a very small school so there wasn't that many people to choose from to spend time with and there wasn't anyone remotely like myself . To be honest, I doubt they understood me at all. I happened to be the first pupil at that school to have Special Educational Needs as the practice of having SEN pupils in mainstream schools had only just started. My behaviour was another issue partly because I felt that positive behaviour wasn’t encouraged enough and also because I got frustrated and wanted attention.
At High school, making friends was easier because there was a much wider range of people to mix with so I was a lot happier. I still did very well academically and I got on very well with the teachers who understood me which was a relief because I was nervous about whether people would understand me. I was on the school council for years and helped out with various things which earned me a lot of respect. I got mostly B’s in my GCSE’s and got into the school's Sixth Form centre. Although I did well there too, most of my friends had left so I found it hard to mix with other sixth formers. Nevertheless, I got BBB in my A Levels and earned a place at Lancaster University in 2014. Going to University has been the most liberating experience of my life because I'm studying the subjects I like; History and Politics. I've made some wonderful friends and I can do whatever I like with my free time since I'm not living at home full time anymore. To be
honest, I've never been happier. My Autism is not an issue anymore although I still wonder what people really think of me. Thankfully, people have become much more understanding about autism during my lifetime. If you’d like to know more, visit the National Autistic Society website or their local branch based in Barrow (www.furnessnas.org). Mainstream schools have become much better at supporting people with Autism in recent years and employers are starting to develop more positive attitudes towards Autistic people. I’ve seen this for myself because all the employers I’ve worked for know about my Autism and are really understanding and accepting (Lloyd Group, Age UK Lancashire and of course Grange, Ulverston and Windermere Now). Finally, having Autism is nothing to hide from or be ashamed of and it’s best to adapt to the condition and be open about it because people will develop more positive attitudes towards autistic people.

The daughters of two of our long standing, and much appreciated deliverers, Lawrie and Jane Woodley, recently took part in a marathon. However, it was no ordinary marathon, starting at Silverdale, crossing Morecambe Bay to Kent's Bank, then along the prom and up to Hampsfell Hospice. From there, the runners made their way to Staveley via High Newton, round to The Swan at Newby Bridge and up to Finsthwaite and High Dam from where it makes it's way to Graythwaite and the finish. The Woodley’s daughters Helen (42) and Kathryn (40) came in at a very creditable 39th and 113th overall, respectively. Helen, who works for Independent Asset Management in Grange was the second lady over the line in just 5hrs 2 mins while Kathryn, who works as a Clerical Assistant at Kendal College, was the 11th lady in 5 hours 47 mins. Very well done to both of them. The show ring has everything from the dog show and a display from the dog agility team, showjumping, carriage driving and the mounted fancy dress parade.

Investment Matters

The Brexit vote can be the only topic in this month’s editorial. We can only scratch the surface in such a small article, but with the result digested what are the likely outcomes? As a chartered firm we have attended or listened to many seminars and webinars and the general consensus is that the UK will broadly see the following outcomes: • Reduction in GDP of 1% to 1.5%. Potentially this may mean touching recession in 2017 but if so it will only be minor rather than devastating. The consensus is that the UK’s economy is reasonably strong and that the economic impact of Brexit is manageable. • Inflation will rise in 2017 to between 3% and 4%. • Interest rates will remain low for even longer and potentially could even fall. • The UK is the sixth largest economy in the world. While the EU will want to be strict on the terms of our withdrawal they will definitely still want to trade with us. The stock market reaction has been interesting. Initially the FTSE 100 fell
in the wake of the result but has since gained and at the time of writing (6th July) stands 9% higher than it did the week before the vote. Of course, other stock markets have been affected differently but nevertheless markets have held up well in the circumstances. Currency markets have not with sterling falling sharply – good news for exporters but not for importers. Of course, we are only a few weeks beyond the vote and it will take weeks and months before the impact is likely to be more fully understood. Coupled with the political mess we have (in the short term at least) uncertainty and volatility will inevitably occur. Next month we will take a look at what Brexit means for investors. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Timely win for Grange

Grange Primary take the title at the final of the times table challenge Six teams of maths wizards from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Grange, Flookburgh, Leven Valley and Lindale Primary Schools, met at Grange Fell Golf Club, to show their knowledge of their times tables and their application in problem solving. The Final was sponsored by Hadwins Motor Group, Higginsons Butchers, Cartmel Sticky Pudding Company and the Netherwood Hotel. After an exciting tie-breaker round, Grange beat Lindale in an exciting tie-breaker round.
Cartmel Priory School Leavers’ Ball took place at the Netherwood on 29 June. A few words have been penned by the outgoing Head Girl, Lucia H: ‘It was such an amazing night. Everyone looked so lovely. It had been raining all day, but it finally stopped and the sun came out just in time, which is something of a miracle for British weather. The sun shone brightly, but not as bright as the smiles as family and friends gathered to witness everyone arriving to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2016.After lots of pictures had been taken, we sat down to our meal - the food was great. Once the meal was over, it was time for speeches. Dr Williams, Headteacher, gave a heartwarming speech about moving on
Grange School received £100 of maths resources with each pupil receiving a £15 voucher and a certificate. Second place was Lindale winning £60 of maths
and Mrs Dodwell, Head of Year, talked about our time at Cartmel with, of course, a few jokes here and there! It was then time for Steven (Steven N – outgoing Head Boy) and me to perform the parody to ‘Tik Tok’ we had written. We were pretty nervous but I think it went down well.
resources and £12 voucher for each pupil and third place was Allithwaite who received £40 of resources and a £10 voucher for each pupil. Thanks to independent marker, Elaine Charnock from Cartmel Priory School and independent time keeper, Chris Chew ensured the smooth running of the event. The prizes were presented by Paul Crewdson, Business Manager, Hadwins Motor Group in the presence of an audience of 50 parents, governors, teachers and Headteachers.
Scout leader needed
1st Grange & Cartmel Scout Group has over 130 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Many more youngsters would love to join but the group need more adults to help their existing team of leaders.
After speeches had been made and prizes given out, we made our way to the dancefloor. The evening ended with us all singing along to ‘Mr Brightside’, which was such a wonderful way to end the night. It was truly a wonderful send-off that I’m sure one we will all remember for many years to come’.
They would particularly like to hear from anyone who is interested in helping with our Scouts – aged 10 ½ to 14. Specific skills are not needed but a willingness to work with young people is essential. We can provide any extra training that is needed. We simply ask that “you do your best” as the Scouting

EMILY’S BUSINESS KEEPS ‘EVOLVING’
ADVERTORIAL
Following a very successful first year as a ‘Wild Training’ franchisee Emily Turnbull (nee Luke) has decided to go it alone, under the new name of Evolve Training.
E
mily told Grange Now: “Even though the name has changed, much of what people love about the classes has stayed the same. There is still the flexibility of being able to choose a class time which suits your schedule; early morning, lunchtime and evening, throughout the week as well as weekends. The classes are still outside on Grange playing fields, which is great for those who aren’t a fan of training indoors. We've had some great times doing events such as Born Survivor - and other social events outside of the classes. I am looking forward to another great year of energetic classes, unpredictable weather and a lot more laughs!”. The classes run in 6-week phases with exercise changes every 2 weeks which means it doesn’t get boring. The phases, which progress through different elements of fitness, ranging from fat burning to strength and SAQ (Speed, Agility & Quickness) means you are
constantly improving your ability and increasing your fitness levels. Julie Stonier says: The best decision I made in 2015 was calling Emily about her classes. Training outdoors, with a great bunch of people and being pushed to your limits by Emily is so rewarding. You leave every session feeling revived and ready for the day. I love it! James Atkinson says: Emily is an excellent tutor who keeps the focus on the class but will give you individual tips to get the most out of every exercise. Her energy and dedication means every class flies by and you can’t wait for the next one. The variety of equipment and exercises keeps everything fresh while working outside brings atmosphere you won’t find in a gym. Monthly memberships include: 3 classes per week, a nutritional analysis and a meal plan. There is also a pay as you go option for those who might only be able to make one class a week.

FOOD & DRINK
Delicious Redcurrant Tart Redcurrants are in season and these pretty, bright red, juicy berries with their tart, sparkling flavour are ripe for cooking with. Their high pectin content means they are ideal in a jelly to be served with game or stirred into sauces and gravies, but the punch of summer flavour that they pack is hard to resist right now. Chef Stephen from Low Sizergh Barn has used their seasonal vigour to good effect in this easy summer tart. For a truly professional finish dip a sprig of them in lightly whisked egg white before rolling them in sugar to create a frosted effect. Method
Pastry 250g plain flour 2tbsp icing sugar 125g Winter Tarn butter (cubed) 1 large Low Sizergh Farm egg 1tsp lemon juice 2 tbsp cold water Pinch of salt Filling 450g red currants (plus extra) 300ml sour cream 3 Low Sizergh Farm large eggs 5tbsp caster sugar 6tbsp ground almonds Pinch of salt

A taste of the Outback It’s not every day that you see Kangaroo fillets in a Butchers shop window, albeit it’s not any old Butchers Shop! With the Barbecue season in full flow, you may well have had your fill of Pork Sausages, Chicken Kebabs and Beef Burgers, so how about wrapping your taste buds around something a little more adventurous? The Exotic BBQ Box available from Higginsons has meats that you’re more likely to find on safari than in a British seaside town. Think Kangaroo fillets, Wild Boar Burgers, Kangaroo Sausages, Ostrich Burgers & Venison Sausages. See what we mean? The Box is designed to feed 4-6 people and costs £15. What a great way to try new meats from around the world! Even better, they’re all ethically sourced and happen to be lean and healthy too! Barbecues aren’t barbecues without the condiments though, and once again, Higginsons
‘Aladdin’s cave’ does not disappoint! There is currently a lovely range of garlicky goodies in-store, fresh from the Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight. The range includes salad dressings and vinaigrettes, flavoured oils, a knock-you-out garlic puree, and some interesting sauces: Barbecue, teriyaki, soy and then there’s the seriously hot ‘Vampire Slayer’ sauce with volcanic chilli! If you’re hankering after something a little more ‘local’, the Morecambe Bay Saltmarsh Lamb is at its seasonal best and travels less than two miles from ‘shore to door’. Lastly, don’t forget to visit our Higginsons stand at this month’s CARTMEL SHOW – 3RD AUGUST! We will have our usual (and unusual) selection of the finest local fresh meats and of course, a mouth-watering mountain of golden, freshly baked pies! Car boot raises nearly £5,000 This is in no small way thanks to the Leven Valley Support Group for St Mary’s Hospice who work incredibly hard fundraising for the hospice. Their enthusiasm and dedication knows no bounds. Chairman for the group, Dot Crabtree, told Grange Now: “Heartfelt thanks to all our friends
Tim’s Column The past month has been a bit of a momentous one politically and inevitably national events took up quite a bit of my time.
However, I tried as hard as I could to keep any distraction from the main job of being your MP to a minimum. Locally, we have been continuing to try to sort out the flooding problems at the bottom of Windermere Road in Grange. A lot of you have been in touch about this and I am doing my best to get someone to sort it out. These drains were simply not designed to handle the levels of water they get some days. The battle to save our mental health ward at Westmorland General Hospital continues. If you want to support us we are marching through Kendal on July 30th at 12.30pm or you can sign our petition, just search on “Tim Farron mental health petition” and follow the links. Sadly it is not just this ward that is under threat. The trust who run the hospital have told me they want to
County Matters I am pleased to report work has started on the signs and lines that were approved months ago for implementation in the Grange and Lindale area. I was instrumental in making sure residents’ views and wishes were respected. The new signs for Charney Well Lane and Lindale School are already in place and hopefully over the next few weeks the other work will be completed.
I have just been contacted by a resident about inconsiderate parking near the Grange Primary School. The photographs I received showed a person’s drive being completely blocked by parked cars. I would ask please that anyone parking near to the School to be considerate and not obstruct anyone’s drive as they may need access for emergencies at any time. Please be a friendly neighbour. At Cumbria County Council we are keen for Grange Library to continue to develop and shape its strong role in the community, providing a vibrant space for groups and
and volunteers for helping to make the day such a success once again and a big thank you to everyone for their continued support in helping raise funds to help the patients and their families in the hospice. Thanks also to everyone who turned out to entertain the crowds: Ritchie the magician enthralled the children with his tricks and Taffy Thomas the Storyteller took them on a journey to another world with his stories. Fifi the Flea flew in from Paris with Uncle Tim and Daisy and there were bargains galore.”
permanently remove onsite overnight and weekend cover from the in the Helme Chase maternity ward. They introduced this reduction in cover as a “temporary” measure in response to staff shortages some time ago and at the time I worriedit was a backdoor route to making them permanent and worse that this was just part of a plan to run down and eventually remove all maternity care at the hospital. We really cannot allow this and I will fight hard to ensure it does not happen. Of course the national political scene will impact on us locally, the new ministers in the various departments will all bring with them different views on issues like schooling, energy and transport and we need to ensure the new arrangements with Europe are the best we can get. I have already started work to ensure that South Lakeland’s needs feature heavily in their plans.
As ever if I can help you with any issues please do get in touch, you can find all the contact details on my website. Alternatively please come along to one of my summer surgeries, we visit the Cartmel Peninsula on the afternoon of August 2nd. individuals to meet, learn and have fun. We are currently developing a volunteer network that will be able to introduce new, exciting activities into the library space. We have 14 volunteers who we are delighted to welcome on board over the coming weeks and who will become a strong link between the community and the library.
We would like to introduce our volunteers to you in the near future so please keep a look out in the library for further information on the Volunteer Network and the work they will be doing. If you have any ideas or suggestions on the kinds of activities you would like to see delivered in the library, please let us know. You can complete a comment card in the library or you can contact us electronically via email at: Kendal. library@cumbria.gov.uk, through our website and also by Facebook (select ‘private message’). Once again I will be helping out at the Dales and Lakes Historic Vehicle Day on Sunday 14th August on the Grange Playing fields so hope to see you all there. It is a wonderful day out for all the family. Regards, Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

ART & MUSIC
Shakespeare shorts Almost 70 years ago, 1947 in fact, a small company of amateur actors was formed and ever since, it has attracted people to watch their productions and listen to readings of well known plays. In the 2005 programme, when a Shakespearean play was announced, would-be actors flocked to join that production. Earlier in the 1980’s, members and friends enjoyed readings from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in the Cumbria Grand Hotel garden on a glorious summer’s evening. Well, “the wheel has come full circle” to quote Will himself and Grange Drama once again turns to his work for entertainment.
An open house reading night, a “pot pourri” of extracts from the bard’s best known plays and sonnets will take place at Grange Institute on Main Street, starting at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th August 2016. Want to know more? Give Jim “Macbeth” Robinson a call on 015395 32879.There is no charge to drop into our regular venue, read or listen, whichever takes your fancy and have a cup of coffee.

Allithwaite Primary School delivered an outstanding performance of Bugsy Malone in the Victoria Hall on Thursday 14th July. It was impressive from start to finish with lovely singing and countless funny moments from all the children. Both the teachers and the pupils worked really hard to organise and rehearse such a good production. The backdrop to the play produced by Kristian Spibey of Rosefox Paper, looked very professional. The production started with a line up of the whole cast singing and wearing brilliant 1920’s style costumes and accessories supplied by Hillary’s costume room. Even the teachers were in costume which I thought was fantastic. The cast said their lines perfectly and the children who played the leading characters are certainly born actors. They were really enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed performing in front of a large audience who clapped and laughed throughout the play at all the funny moments, especially from those playing the main characters. The funniest moments included the boys firing coloured silly string from toy guns to the surprise of the audience and an audition featuring some of the characters.
The main members of the cast included Evan Allan as Bugsy, Hannah Bradshaw Blousey, Verity Cooper - Fizzy, Ruby Wilson - Tallulah, Katie Shepherd - Fat Sam and Alice Kerr played Lena Marelli. They were particularly good and their roles came so naturally to them and brought the story to life. The mood among the audience after the play had finished was so positive and some of them were amazed at just how polished and professional the production was. Following the performance, Headteacher, Gillian Elliott, expressed her

The children were really well behaved and were a credit to their teachers and families that night so it is a fitting end to the academic year at Allithwaite and a great way for the eighteen Year 6 pupils to end their time at the school. I genuinely felt that the production was faultless and it couldn’t be more entertaining. By Harry Fenton.

Stars of the future
Dazzling evocative playing Following the excellent July concert with world renowned clarinettist Julian Bliss, next in our programme is Sam Haywood.
Sam (piano) returns to Grange bringing his friends Matthew Huber (cello) and Maria Wloszczowska (violin). He is also a world player, having grown up in the Lake District and won second prize in the piano finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition when he was 13. Recently he toured the U.S. with American violinist Joshua Bell and the Washington Post hailed his "dazzling evocative playing". He also performs regularly with the cellist Steven Isserlis, but on a recent visit to Singapore he met and performed with Matt Huber, whose performance was described: "His singing tone rode through the music's lyricism with rapturous fervour" by The Times, Singapore.
Maria is also in demand as a soloist and chamber musician worldwide and has won many prizes. She studied with Maxim Vengerov with whom she recorded a CD.
Their programme is: Haydn's Trio in E major, Beethoven's Ghost Trio, Mendelssohn Trio in D, and a Bach transcription. Friday 5th August, 8pm at Victoria Hall, Admission is £12 at the door, accompanied children and students are admitted free.
Last night of the Proms
On 12th July, Cartmel Priory School was joined by Cartmel Primary to showcase their collective musical talents with a Summer Concert. There were beautifully accomplished performances from students from every year group. These included a performance of The Toreador’s Song and Mamma Mia by the primary school; Amy S singing ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ accompanied by the CPS Band and Lydia D playing Doctor Gradus and Parnassum by Debussy on piano. Thomas B performed Callejon de la Luna by Vicente Amigo on guitar and Andrew B played a selection of pieces by Gershwin on the Saxophone. Included in the programme was a very short version of ‘Matilda’
from the Drama Department. Lucy G gave a confident performance in the title role and there were some new faces alongside the more seasoned performers, including Tom S, Max G, Charlie R, Tom P and Alicia C.
Mrs Sullivan, CPS Head of Music, commented: “The Summer Concert is always a special night in our calendar - a huge well done and congratulations to everyone involved. There sadly isn’t enough space to feature details of all the performances but every pupil should be proud of their confident and skilful singing and the music played. We are sure to see some, if not all, of the above in our forthcoming productions of ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘Oliver’”

Looking back at Grange Now By Mary Ann-Best - Founder and former Editor
Can it really be 25 years since my late partner Robin Williamson and myself began Grange Now, 300 issues ago? A quarter of a century has passed since Grange Now began, recording the happenings in Grange and surrounding villages.
O
ur aim was to provide local news for local people coupled with the means for local businesses and tradespeople to reach their customers in the Cartmel peninsula.Amazingly the internet hadn’t been invented in 1991. It was only a year or two after hot metal had ceased to be necessary for the printing process.Computers were in their infancy. We still used good old fashioned paste-up and printing plates to produce Grange Now. (Cue the violin).
With a shared background in newspapers and magazines Robin and I hit on the idea of a monthly news magazine devoted to the Cartmel peninsula. However this wasn’t our original plan. We were renting an office in Grange to launch a print and advertising agency having previously worked on the defunct ‘Grange & District Memorandum.’ To produce a newspaper ourselves wasn’t something we’d considered. But when the ninth or tenth person popped their head around the door to enquire if we were “doing another paper”, we wondered if we could – although not weekly, we knew this wasn’t viable in such a small town – but maybe if published monthly…? “Let’s go for it,” said Robin, “It will help pay the rent if nothing else.” Next problem was what to call our embryonic newspaper? At the time a new national newspaper had been launched by Eddie Shah called Now! Robin had a brainwave, why not Grange Now! We had a title – but we didn’t keep the exclamation mark for long – and found a printer in Kendal. (To digress – later we acquired a printing press and printed it ourselves but this gave us more problems, we hadn’t acquired a collator so we spent one evening a month collating the
We began very modestly and the first issue in September 1991 was, looking back, somewhat embarrassing - only four pages with hardly any news. Fortunately I’d persuaded a few brave Grange businesses to advertise and this enabled us to cover our costs but we knew we couldn’t wing it next time. Fortunately, however, by the following month advertising had amazingly increased and we had our first proper news story! (Threat to Allithwaite playing field).Somehow we were on our way.
pages around the kitchen table – all the (then) 5,000 copies. A few months of this and we employed some lovely ladies to do it for us before we eventually purchased a collator). The next task was to get Grange Now delivered. Fortunately we latched onto the Grange distribution for the three ‘frees’ then flying around the town each week and Grange Now was included once a month. We were relieved to have a means of delivering door to door. Door to door delivery was the strength of‘ the frees’ in attracting advertisers. Robin wanted Grange Now to appeal to traditional newspaper readers – we were to be a mini broadsheet rather than a tabloid and used Times New Roman as a typeface. The paper was three columns wide so was easier to read and adverts were devised to fit the columns, called rather quaintly ‘boxes’. Everything fitted neatly, until a few months down the line we were asked for a quarter page which caused some layout problems, but hey, a quarter page wasn’t to be sniffed at! A month later we were asked the price for a full page. I had no idea. I quickly worked out that as a single box was charged at £18 and we could fit 15 to a

page, ergo a full page of boxes would command £260. This seemed a tad extortionate so I decided instead to go for ten times the cost of a single box and quoted £180 whilst holding my breath. The advertiser immediately booked the back page for 6 months. Somehow we seemed to have found the right formula for a popular local newspaper – our maxim was to give readers a good read. I was the newshound sniffing out local stories and realised early on it was important to have a finger on the pulse of Grange – to know what mattered to residents – and not to be frightened of upsetting local bigwigs. If we published the truth then they couldn’t sue us! In fact we prided ourselves that if you read about it in Grange Now it was the unvarnished truth. We took SLDC to task many times over the way Grange always seemed to be at the back of the queue – such as reneging on a promise to build a new pool; the money went on renewing the roof of the leisure centre in Kendal instead. Another plan was to suggest Grange had sustainable alpines planted on the walls instead of flowery summer bedding, so popular with visitors,
‘‘
Let’s go for it. It will help pay the rent if nothing else to save money - although summer bedding was still to be provided everywhere else in South Lakeland. (Ironically this issue is now back on the agenda).Closing the bridges (for Health and Safety) at Berners and Clare House Lane, both deemed dangerous from lack of maintenance. Hmm, by
whom exactly, we asked.Berners bridge was lost for ever and Clare House Lane bridge took years to return. An early news story was the closing of the swimming pool on the prom because it was ‘leaking’ – still full 24 years later. And of course it wasn’t only SLDC that Grange Now took to task. Another topic getting Grange Now’s goat were Questionnaires. Hardly a year passed without another questionable questionnaire – what residents wanted or didn’t want – maybe questionnaires? Some were delivered within Grange Now so we didn’t complain about that (extra revenue) but despite the positive vibes – something was going to get done about a, b or c, nothing ever transpired. It is hoped that the present Community Led Plan will fare better. It should by the hard work that has gone into it. Major stories over the years included Spartina grass – how to eradicate? Trials were arranged involving pesticide, roto burying, or pulling up by hand. Manual pulling up was the most successful but also the hardest work and would take forever. If adopted it wouldn’t be finished now!Roto burying caused Grange Now a giggle and we hope, our readers. We christened the machine ‘Roly’ and poor Roly ended up burying itself. In fact leaving the grass to nature and a few sheep worked much better. Maybe when Grange Now reaches 50 years we will be Grange over Sands again. Cycling on the prom was a hot topic. Letters to the Editor were written, petitions were organised. Mums wanted it for safety, being traffic free, whilst other residents, equally vociferous, wanted the promenade to remain pedestrian only. The joke was that the bye law prohibiting cycling, dating from the time the prom was constructed, had inadvertently been left off a new list of bye laws, so cycling had been legal for some time.
Toilets closing was another urgent issue covered by Grange Now. Another was a One Way suggestion along the obstacle course of Kents Bank Road but arguments ensued about which way. The cost of car parking, the perceived (by some) threat of Booths arriving; a market in Grange? All much argued topics over the years. The building of the underpass, the closure of the pedestrian level crossing (when?), the long awaited Newton by pass. The Grand Opening and sad closing of the Lottery funded pool – actually a lot of fund raising was also carried out by residents including children. Grange Now devoted page 2 every month to keeping everyone informed about how the pot was growing. We were very proud of our first colour issue – only 4 pages at first, but soon it became 8 and then 12 and finally 16! We kept the same size format however and some black and white pages. Not every advertiser wanted to pay extra for colour. We had grown to 32 pages by now and over the years the popular classified section for small ads had trebled in size. To ensure interest in the classified section we devised Free for Sales for readers. Art Beat, Musical Notes, Bookshelf, School Report, Financial Matters, and our very first continued >>

Looking back at Grange Now one; Society Round-up all became regular features, keeping everyone abreast of what was going on. We created a monthly What’s On which ensured readers held onto their copy, giving advertisers a longer ‘shelf life’. I was overruled with ‘From the Pulpit’ and had to settle for Church News. I did, however, get away with calling the pets column ‘Paws for Thought’. My cat Thompson enjoyed his appearances. I asked the new MP at the time (Tim Collins) to write a column for us and when Tim Farron won the seat he agreed to continue. Grange Now was always non-political however. Once during a General Election, we were asked what party we were promoting. We knew the answer to that. We promoted Grange! We were proud of our vibrant Letters page and always tried to make room for every letter. We made sure we had a disclaimer at the top of the page, as although we printed them all (unless anonymous) we didn’t necessarily agree with some the sentiments expressed! Robin and I knew how important it was for people to ‘have their say’ and Grange Now was their platform.

When we began we never dreamt Grange Now would still be going strong 25 years later. It was hard enough to look more than a month ahead, so intent we were on producing the current issue. Looking back much has changed in Grange since 1991 – not least the fields being currently swallowed by bricks and mortar but it was always thus. Grange is evolving, just as Grange Now did. My editorship of Grange Now ceased in November 2013 when I retired and under the new ownership of Chris it has a brand new look. I guess it was time for dear old GN

It was very important to me to get everything in. Much midnight oil was burnt squeezing in reports, cutting judiciously here and there. Pleading that society round-up correspondents kept to the 200 words rule mostly fell on deaf ears. The only items left out were if they’d arrived after deadline. Even these were squeezed
in if date imperative. Although Grange Now was funded solely by advertising revenue, we were very conscious that it was the stories and reports that kept people reading (and complaining when not delivered). Our maxim was – if we kept the readers happy the advertisers would be happy. It was also very important to have it delivered ‘door to door’ and we always had a tremendous band of deliverers of all ages. Sometimes we had a bad apple (who wasn’t asked to stay) but on the whole the majority our deliverers were very reliable. When giving talks to local groups about Grange Now, I could predict the first question. “I don’t get a Grange Now.” There could be several reasons – living off the beaten track, living in a housing complex where papers were left in reception, the deliverer running out of papers and not telling us. There was usually a reason why. But it was always good to know how keen people were to get it. That couldn’t be said about many frees.

to have a makeover! In the old days we occasionally changed the colour of the front page (known as ‘spot colour’). For a few years we printed in a fetching shade of lavender. When we switched to red (or was it yellow?) we received a few letters of complaint. The lavender had been popular. The problem was we didn’t have any more purple ink. We’d managed to acquire a job lot of purple at a fraction of the cost of printing ink, but as the advert says ‘when it’s gone, it’s gone’ and it had. They were very happy years producing Grange’s very own paper. I have fond memories all that happened over the years and of all the people who were involved with Grange Now – too many sadly are no longer with us. May Grange Now continue for another 300 issues and another 25 years, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t, so long as it continues to provide local news for local people. Thanks to Chris for the opportunity to be back in Grange Now! Mary Ann Best
Debt of gratitude
Lieutenant Colonel Austin Townsend Porritt, born in Greenmount in 1875, was the grandson of James Porritt, one of three brothers who began a wool manufacturing business (Porritt & Spencer Ltd) in Lancashire in 1838. Col. Porritt raised the 2nd/5th Battalion, The East Lancashire Regiment and later took the Battalion to France and Flanders, but was invalided home in 1917. It was on returning home that Col. Porritt moved to Grange, a place where he had holidayed over the years and which held a special place in his heart.
In this celebratory issue, we would like to show our gratitude to the Porritts, a family who gave Grange many of the wonderful amenities it still enjoys today.
A Potted History
Celebrating Grange Hotel’s 150th Anniversary
Regarded with huge affection and respect by all who knew him, Lt. Col. Porritt met and married his wife, Annie Louise Schofield-Law from Grange and they had one child, a son, named Richard.
The family lived at Yewbarrow Lodge and Lt.Col. Porritt was the Chairman of Grange Urban Council for many years and was also the Chairman of the Special Bathing Pool Committee which was instrumental in building the Olympic size swimming pool on the Promenade - our now defunct lido. It is thanks to his generosity that we are able to enjoy the Community Orchard, the Sunken Gardens, the Memorial Playing Fields Pavilion, Yewbarrow Lodge and the surrounding Orchard. He also paid for the reseating of St. Paul’s Church with oak pews, the panelling of the west end of the church and the building of a new porch and baptistry.
Tragedy was to befall this generous man when his son, who had become one of the youngest ever MP’s when he took his seat in the commons in 1935 at the age of 24 decided to go to war. He became the first MP to die in the second world war when, at the age of 29, he was killed in Seclin, near Lille during the retreat to Dunkirk. It was when the Colonel and Annie were in London to receive a medal which had been awarded posthumously to Richard, that they received the news that their home, Yewbarrow Lodge, had been destroyed by an enemy bomb. Annie sadly died shortly after. Col. Porritt never returned to Yewbarrow Lodge, and instead lived out the rest of days at the Grange Hotel. On his death, he gifted the lodge and the land surrounding (now the Orchard) to Grange Urban Council for the benefit of the people of Grange. He died in 1956 and was buried, alongside his wife, in Grange Cemetery.
Colonel Porritt’s cousin, Harold, was also a benefactor and it is thanks to him that we are able to enjoy the playing fields in Grange. He was also responsible for gifting the tea rooms on the prom and the bandstand which originally stood on the prom. This was moved to its current position after ladies complained that soot from the passing steam trains was ruining their clothes.

This is the second year Girlguiding has hosted the large-scale festival for Brownies and Rainbows, offering younger members the chance to experience similar events to older Guides and Senior Section members.
In June, Brownies from Grange were among 1500 young Girlguiding members who attended Magic and Mayhem, the UK’s youngest girl-only festival, in Lancashire. 1st Grange over Sands Brownies descended on the Girlguiding’s activity centre in Clitheroe for the weekend-long extravaganza. The open-air event gave girls the opportunity to try their hand at circus skills, learn a magic trick or two, and conduct exciting science experiments.
The young festival-goers then enjoyed a disco and a mass sleepover in a giant big top tent.
Jenna Butler aged 9 years, who attended the event, said “It was so much fun trying out lots of new activities. We really enjoyed caving
As well as Magic and Mayhem, the charity is hosting Wellies and Wristbands in August, a weekendlong festival for girls aged 10-plus. Girlguiding offers girls as young as five the opportunity to be independent, learn new skills, gain confidence, make new friends and have fun.

Senior project manager, Matthew, who lives with wife Bev and his two daughters, Holly and Olivia said of the trip: “The whole experience was very humbling. It really made me think about what I have and take for granted as we live in a completely different environment.
“I have been to parts of South Africa before on holiday and that was a totally different world to the places I visited on this trip. The trip, which was fully funded by BT, gave Matthew and his colleagues a chance to see first hand the projects that he has helped to bring about including: Kick 4 Life (K4L) in Lesotho, which engages local children through football to educate them about HIV; Legal Resources Council in Johannesburg, which provides free legal support for people facing unlawful evictions; and Fight with Insight, a boxing club formed to support abused youngsters.

Humphrey Head sporting the latest stile
It’s not that grim up North! Having worked in the countryside for many years now, over time you get to notice changes.
Thanks to a group of volunteers, and funding from Lower Allithwaite Parish Council, the beautiful coastline walk around Humphrey Head now has a new ‘kissing gate’ type stile. Grange Rambler, Alec Bottomley, had noticed for some time that the old stile, a ‘ladder’ type, was in a bad state of repair, and not only that but it was also impossible for dogs to get over, so walkers were lifting the wire fence beside it to let their dogs through which ultimately led to a large hole. This caused

problems for local farmer, Harry Wilson, from Wyke Farm whose stock were managing to escape through the hole.
So, thanks to Alec and fellow rambler, Alan Heaton, along with Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Peter Jones and Simon Thomas, Wendy Nelson (member of Grange Natural History Society), and Harry (and his tractor) the new stile is in place, looks great and is doing a great job of keeping Harry’s livestock exactly where they should be. A great result all round.
idea to ask them to keep an eye on things for you, let them harvest whatever they like in return, but for anything less than two weeks I wouldn’t bother, you can experience a, ‘I’m betting the whole house on red!’ level of excitement without any of the actual risk by simply leaving it. it’s also a genuine reason for hoping the weather isn’t too good back youthan areschadenfreude. looking to sell homeIfother
Birds and some insects migrate north to breed and then return south for the winter. Some species, such as the Speckled wood butterfly are originally a southern species, however it is one of the most common butterflies I see, and the same can be said for the Southern hawker dragonfly, which is thought to have moved north using our canal and river systems. Some birds have also moved north, such as the Little egret. About a decade ago these elegant birds were a novelty here, but if you look out over the bay, you are almost guaranteed to see several at a time. In fact, locally we have a roost of over 60+. We have had Bee-eaters breeding in the county recently and we are getting more visits from White storks and Common cranes, although the crane was recently re- introduced in the south. Other’s that used to breed in the UK include the Eurasian Eagle owl, Black crowned night heron and Dalmatian pelican. There is a population of Eagle owls in Yorkshire and there is a Dalmatian
•
pelican off the coast of Cornwall at present.
The climate may well be changing, but it brings encouragement that some of our lost wildlife may return to our tiny island shores once more, giving exciting new challenges in maintaining our wild habitats in the future.
TICKS - Due to our recent mild but wet winters, the ticks are becoming more of an issue with infections. So please be aware when you are out in the countryside and remember to check yourselves, and your pets, afterwards. Tools for safe removal can be purchased from local pet shops and vets. THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands
Welcome to our latest newsletter; we’ve had plenty of fun over the last few months including our Strawberry Fete at the start of July. April
May
The residents prepared for St. George’s Day by creating a range of decorations that covered the home, including flags, hats and window stickers and we enjoyed a special St. George’s Day meal.
May was very sunny and we made the most of it, spending our time in the gardens, playing croquet, relaxing with drinks and soaking up the sun.
We moved into high gear preparing for our strawberry fete. The residents finished their paper mache strawberries and made a series of large banners to welcome visitors.
The residents started on decorations for our strawberry fete in July, making paper mache craft strawberries to hang around the home.
The good weather held up – at least at the start of June and we spent a lot of time in the garden playing all manner of games.
Richard Bromley came to play for us. His piano performances always include a medley of popular hits.
June
We visited Beetham Nursery and had afternoon tea there – the flower displays were impressive and we got lots of ideas for flowers we would like to plant at The Old Vicarage.
The amazing Richard Bromley As the weather improved, we went on a host of outings with visits to the Promenade and the Ornamental Pond in Grange along with tea and cake at local cafes. Several residents paid a visit to Holker Hall to have a look around their garden and food shops; they bought some flowers and had a bite to eat. We also went on a trip to the Candle Factory in Lindale - the range of candles and scents is amazing and we had afternoon tea at their traditional restaurant. The residents got cracking on their gardening - they planted sunflowers and sweet peas and made window flower boxes. As the daffodils bloomed in our gardens, we filled The Old Vicarage with flower arrangements. 26
We had more trips to Grange to feed the ducks at the Ornamental Pond, go for walks on the Promenade and of course we had to eat ice cream. A new orchard with bee hives has opened in the field next to The Old Vicarage and our residents have been going walks there – it's full of wild flowers – perfect for a picnic.
When the rain came, we didn’t let it stop us as we played scrabble inside – one of our new residents turned out to be whizz at it. We also looked after our fast growing plants and flowers – the sunflowers were shooting up and needed replanting. We had several more visits to parks and the prom in Grange – often it's one to one outings so everyone gets their own personal time. The Nostalgia Singers returned after visiting earlier in the year. The duo are popular with the residents and they had everyone singing their favourite songs.

Our Best Fête Yet
Everyone was impressed by the singing group Voce We had a brilliant event, with everyone stunned with the calibre of VOCE – they sang for 2 hours and we were lucky to have them. The Owl Sanctuary came with several owls and braved the outdoor winds. Bongo balloons made animals and flowers to the delight of small and not so small children.
We had a range of stalls, including a children’s tombola, a raffle, an adult tombola, Pimms, several craft stalls selling a variety of items including jewellery, gifts, homemade clothing and knick knacks and most importantly a cake stall selling cakes made by the Old Vicarage cooks - Paulette & Kath - the cake stall always seems to be the most popular! Of course we had our strawberries with scones and cream. We had a lot of help from the Grange & District Lions, without whom it wouldn’t have been possible. We would also like to thank everyone who helped and donated prizes. Our residents, their families & friends and everyone who came had a great time and the only challenge is to make it even better next year!
Emily with the owls from the Owl Sanctuary We raised £712, which is our highest amount ever, half of which we will be donating to the Grange Lions for charitable causes and the rest will be used for The Old Vicarage Resident’s Fund.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP Lower Holker Village Hall
The hall has recently benefitted from a £1,000 grant from Grange and Cartmel (South Lakeland) Community Grants Fund. The grant was used to part fund the outside painting of the hall. The work, carried out by local contractor Steve Wilson, has greatly enhanced the appearance of this much used community venue. Geoff Critchley, Chairman.
Grange Garden Society
Lynn Brunetti travelled from the Penrith area to give her talk to the Society on Friday 17th June, it was well worthwhile as her presentation was lively and informative and left members with an enhanced appreciation of Climbing Plants. Lynn illustrated each method used by plants with examples from beautiful gardens where tendrils, roots and stems supported colourful and bountiful arbours, arches and walls. The Society heard how climbing stems will be stimulated to cling to walls with pads taking only a few hours to develop and heard how to use these climbing methods to enhance their garden walls and fences. She advised listeners that when as keen gardeners they had filled their garden beds there was a vertical garden still to be filled. Roses, Clematis Jasmine, Wisteria, Ivy and Honeysuckle being old favourites and all of them a source of food and shelter for our wildlife. Following a successful Edwardian Festival, despite the weather, the Society is hoping that the Cake and Plant sale and Coffee morning held on 25th June was also well attended. The next meeting is on 19th August Gardening for Wildlife. Both at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church Hall. Visitors are welcome.
Cartmel and District Flower Club
At the meeting on 20th June, we welcomed Kathleen Dean Southport. Her demonstration, ‘A Garden of Verse’ based on favourite poems, ‘The Owl and the pussycat’, ‘To a butterfly’, ‘My love is like a red, red rose’ and finally, ‘The Garden’. Kathleen used a beautiful selection of flowers in stunning colours including gerbera, roses, laitrus, stocks, sweet william, peonies, anterinums and magnificent orchids all beautifully arranged. Kathleen told many amusing tales of her life before retiring from her flower shop in Southport including delivery problems and driving home after demonstrations, she gave us an afternoon full of lovely flowers and fun. The annual club competition for members took place today the title being, ‘Fit for a Queen’, our thanks were shown to Ann Chester for judging a range of lovely arrangements.
Congratulations were given to Rosemary and Pat for being awarded second prize at Holker Flower Festival. Our next meeting on 18th July is the Annual Outing the coach leaves Cartmel at 9am. Grange 9.30am. Levens 9.30am. Pine Lake 9.45am.

June featured the art society’s 69th annual exhibition of members work in Victoria Hall. The paintings and drawings shown were in a variety of mediums and the subjects were also very varied, flowers, animals, portraits, landscapes and abstract compositions. Two members kindly allowed us to show their sketch books and journals. As in previous years the Stroke Association provided paintings, showcasing the talent and determination of their members. The favourite picture which was voted for over the week was ‘Catching Up’ painted by Mrs Ann Millard and the raffle picture ‘Bird of Paradise Flowers’ painted by Mrs Susan Page, the winner of last year’s favourite picture was won by Mr Victor Hindle. Our thanks to all those who submitted pictures and cards and especial thanks to those people who helped set up and then dismantle the exhibition. On 11th July Andrew Vickers gave a fascinating talk on Recycling in South Lakeland. He pointed out that the South Lakeland area covered more than 600 square miles, with over 53,000 homes and at least 4 million collections. He stressed that the aim was to provide a universal service. Recycling began with the collection of paper only but now the sale of newspapers had declined by 50%. He explained that much of what had previously gone to landfill was now turned into fuel and that the recycling process had become cost neutral. He concluded with a video showing the recycling process and the new fleet of vehicles.
PROBUS is a club for retired men and women in the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. The Club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. What a contrast to last month! At the time I was doing my report for Grange Now it was sunny, dry and warm; now look at itrain, cold and windy with more water on the ground than can be absorbed. The Environment Agency and Network Rail are helping us with the flooding problem which is a mystery to us because when we are flooded normally the fields all around us are flooded, but not this time. However we have had some good response to our ‘Get Into Golf’ programmes. The first group have now come to the end of the first session when a dozen ladies attended the group lessons and are willing to get on with the second phase, with many hoping to join the Golf Club in the near future. The new ‘Get Into Golf’ session started after the Edwardian Festival where Juniors and adults signed up for group lessons. Despite a bad weather forecast, Lady Captain’s Day was very successful, with over 40 ladies playing golf over 50 attending the Lady Captain’s delicious meal which was followed by the Prize Giving. Julia Liddell was the winner, Pauline Smith was second and Glynis Purnell was third. Gent’s Captain’s Day will be held in the near future.

16th June, the 9-mile walk took us from Orton village over Gaythorne Plain and back via Asby Winderwath Common through the Asby Scar, National Nature Reserve. We enjoyed a multitude of diverse wildflowers alongside paths and the songs of the Skylarks. The weather was good we didn’t experience during the walk any of the downpours occurring elsewhere. Impromptu walk 6th June, the 6 mile easy walk start from Staveley up to Potter Tarn via Craggy Plantation and Littlewood farm and back through Beck Mickle Ing. It was an excellent walking day with good views of distant hills, many plants in flower and birds on the ground and in flight. Both walks led by Tony Harrison. Grange Ramblers is launching a series of trial walks- “SUNDAY RAMBLES” on Sundays, hopefully it will appeal to those who are enjoying walk the lakes and fells but unavailable during the weekdays, the walk details will only circular via e-mail 4-5 days ahead based on the weather forecast, it will not shown on walks programme or website’s walk finder, if you are interested to take part on the Sunday Rambles, please contact Gary Hewitt: g.l.hewitt@ btinternet.com to ensure that your name is on our mailing list.

On 19th July 100 members took part in our summer event based at the Cumbria Grand. One group took a guided walk around the adjacent Brown Robin Cumbria Wildlife Trust reserve whilst other tried their hands at a game of croquet. Everyone enjoyed afternoon tea, the light classical music played by three of our members, and the opportunity to talk to other members. For our monthly meeting in August we return to the Victoria Hall where on the morning of 16th August we’ll be hearing from a Marine Biologist. Sarah Neill will be talking about her work with Marine Divers Rescue including otter and cetacean (whale and dolphins) surveys. “Fun on the Prom” and a “Picnic in the Park” will take place on 18th August with tennis, bowls, putting and crazy golf. The Environmental Awareness Group’s visit to Shank’s Mechanical and Biological Treatment Centre at Barrow was fascinating and we learnt a great deal about what happens to the waste we put in the grey bins. More details of U3A’s many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange, at Grange Library and on posters around the town.

The Lifeboat Flag Day was held in Grange over Sands on Saturday 9th July. It was a damp and wet day, but the people in town very kindly donated £529.30 to the RNLI. Very grateful thanks are due to all our collectors, and to the kind and generous Grange residents who supported the House to House collection in the previous week, when £1,232.10 was raised for the Charity.
There was a good attendance at the meeting in July. The President reported that the afternoon tea, which was held to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, had been a success. Sue Jackson went as the Rep. to the AGM in Brighton and gave a comprehensive report on the proceedings. Requests were made for contributions to be made to sell at Cartmel Show and also for members to help there. Helpers are also needed at the Westmorland Show to assist with setting up the marquee and as stewards. Joan Meakin then gave a most interesting talk on ‘Plants Poisonous and Medicinal’. Using examples of common plants, she described how some parts could be poisonous while other parts of some plants could be used for medicinal purposes. Some prescribed medicines may have a harmful effect if taken over the recommended dosage. It was a thought-provoking talk which held everyone’s interest. There is no meeting in August. The next one will be on 14th September when Howard Whittaker is giving his ‘Humorous observations of an Auctioneer’. It will be at Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

In June, Ros and Steve Bagwell came from USA to talk about ‘The Bible – Feast or Famine’. Ros, from Bury, went to Cameroon, in West Africa, with Wycliffe Bible Translators, then to Chad, where she met and married a computer programmer, Steve from America. Later they moved to Nairobi and
eventually to USA on the home staff of Wycliffe. They reported that although there are well over 100 different English translations of the Bible, apart from tapes, CDs, tablets and computers, of the 7000 languages in the world, only 500 have the Bible in their own language, 1300 have the New Testament and 1700 have no word of scripture at all. They demonstrated the problems of recording languages with no alphabet and the difficulties of phonetics, different idioms and tonal variations. Schools often teach by rote in a language children don’t understand and never use at home. What a challenge they face to get God’s word to all the world. On September 20th, we will welcome back Matt Rich whose talk is called “Sitting on a Virtual Bench”. The meeting is at Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank at 10.30am preceded by coffee at 10am, to which all are welcome.

In a week of heavy rain, Thursday afternoon was fine for the celebration in Flookburgh village Hall of TWO 90th birthdays: Our group, and H.M. the Queen. The Hall was patriotically decorated for the occasion in red white and blue, and although we are only a small group, a very high quality afternoon tea was served. A display of memorabilia from the local WI and community attracted much interest, as did the display provided by the WI head office (Kendal) showing what the WI means to today’s women: and it is not all ‘Jam and Jerusalem!’ In the later afternoon, many school children and their mums joined us, there still being more than enough afternoon teas to satisfy the young mouths. The usual raffle and tombola had a plentiful supply of prizes, and the afternoon was rounded off with ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Jerusalem’, and the National Anthem. At our July meeting, Freda and Edith entertained us with their experiences of cruise liners including the QE2 over the last 20 years. Several members joined in with their memories of some of the places visited by the speakers. There is no meeting in August.

CHURCH NEWS
Grange Methodist Church The morning congregation joined with Toast Church and shared the work the children had been doing, learning of the fruits of the Spirit. Music was led by the Rev Jo Rand, Martha and Amos, the songs were uplifting and boisterous. After a drama which the children and young people took part in, we discussed in groups how the spiritual fruits had helped us through the week then shared our thoughts with everyone. We made collages to emphasise what we had learned which are to be displayed in the church hall and afterwards, shared toast and tea, (or coffee). Saturday 25th June, was the day designated for the Street Collection for ‘Action for Children’ and in Grange there were many members of the church actively collecting donations. A Coffee morning had also been planned to boost the funds, and both proved quite successful. This combined effort resulted in the marvellous total of £540.20p being raised. Many thanks to those who gave, those who worked and those who baked for this worthy cause. Morning services are having to take place in the schoolroom because of roof problems, but the informality is proving successful. On Sunday morning, the worship service was conducted by the Rev. M William of Barrow, and included communion. We shall not have to say much about it, as the minister’s sermon was the challenge of St Paul’s words, that if we must boast, then our boast should be of the Lord. Joy Campton was the pianist. An announcement was made of the welcome get together to meet with the Rev and Mrs Steve Morgan, who are here for a holiday, from South Carolina. We hope that our weather will be as warm as they would experience in their home state.

At that moment laughter was penetrating the deluge (one of Biblical proportions) from the new freshly assembled gazebo. We were having a fabulous time together preparing for our first presentation at the Edwardian Festival. It was 7.30am. The dictionary defines ‘struggle’ in many ways, from ‘fighting’ to ‘being confused’. We were endeavouring earnestly and despite being soaked! It was raining heavily two and a half hours later. Visitors are always welcome to join us for the spoken service of Holy Communion held in the Lady Chapel at St Paul’s every Wednesday morning at 10.00am. After the service, which lasts about thirty-five minutes, all present are invited to partake of coffee and biscuits which are served at the back of church.
This is a good opportunity for visitors and newcomers to Grange to get to know members of St Paul’s in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Please come and join us -we would be delighted to see you. Recently a large contingent from St Paul’s joined with other congregation members from across the Cartmel Peninsula team to visit St Peter’s Church, Finsthwaite, for the first in a series of inter-church visits. Everyone was made very welcome as they toured St Peter’s and learned about its history. Of particular
thanks and pray for a better day for the visitors and stand holders.
The prayers were answered with the heaviest rainfall so far experienced - more laughter. Prayers are not always answered when and how we would like them to be. Visitors were suddenly there- mums, dads, children grandparents- ignoring, in a truly British way the weather and asking questions while facepaint was being applied to youngsters. The prayers had been answered after all. Unfortunately, due to refurbishment, we are unable to use Grange Primary School during the summer. Please contact us on: 015395 83455 to find out where the meeting will be held. interest was the tower, to which the group were granted access. The tower houses the only working set of tubular bells in Cumbria and also able to be viewed was the mechanism of the tower clock which is a miniaturised version of Big Ben. The afternoon ended with a delicious tea in Finsthwaite Village Hall and many thanks must be paid to the congregation of St Peter’s for their warm hospitality.
‘Keyboards in Action’ is the title of our next lunchtime concert which will take place in St Paul’s on Wednesday, 10th August with Charles Edmondson and guest musician Nigel Duce playing duets on piano and organ. The programme will include works by Schubert, Mozart, Debussy and Bizet amongst others and promises to be highly entertaining. As usual the concert will be preceded by lunch served from 12 noon and the hour long concert will commence at 1.00pm. Admission is £8, to include lunch, and is payable at the door.
Grange United Reformed Church July has seen our exhibition of the history of our church over the last 125 years and very interesting it has proved. I hope many of you were able to visit it. Now we look to the future, and the URC and Methodist congregations have decided to work even more closely together. Starting in September, we will share worship twice a month instead of only once, on the second and third Sundays. We are also investigating how else our congregations can co-operate. We look forward to this exciting venture as we get to know each other better. For the present, the Church Walks continue on the 2nd Thursday of the month and everybody is welcome at the Midweek service in the Church Hall on Thursdays at 10.30am.

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank
By Matron We are at the end of a village perched on a hill with far reaching views over Morecambe Bay. We see the sun rise and the sun set. The main house has architecture worthy of a stately home with an interior and grounds to match. But who are we? What do we do? And what is it like to work for a community of Augustinian Sisters? Boarbank Hall has many functions: it is a guest house; it is a retreat house; it is used for conferences; it is a place for worship, and there is a nursing home, which is where I work. So firstly to answer some pressing questions:
30
Are we all Catholic? The simple answer is, No. You do not have to be religious to live, work and stay at Boarbank. What are the Sisters like? They are warm, kind, caring women who have a defined purpose in their lives. And I must add on a personal note, they have wicked senses of humour. We laugh, talk and cry together and their presence in the nursing home undoubtedly makes it a very special place. Do you have to attend Mass or the other services? Only if you want to. What are the staff like that work in the nursing home? I am extremely proud of my staff, they are dedicated, hardworking and go the extra mile for the patients. They sing happy birthday to patients and staff alike, they sit and chat to the patients, play games with them, take them out on trips, welcome them and their loved ones into Boarbank and they cry for them when they pass away, comforting their families and friends.
Grange now | AUGUST 2016 - Next deadline 19th AUGUST
What are the staff like in the guest house? They are polite, friendly, hardworking and smile a lot, which I think sometimes a smile says more than words can.
And now a personal note. I drive 45 minutes to work every day and the moment I see Boarbank as I drive over the hill out of Grange a
smile creeps on my face. I enjoy coming to work, and I think if you can say that then you have found your vocation. Would you like to have a job where your opinions count? And where you feel valued? Telephone: 015395 32288 manager@boarbankhall.org.uk

“When we arrived the tents were already put up, so we dumped our bags, ate tea then went to the evening meeting in the open barn. After the meeting we all watched the Paddington movie and finally went to sleep about midnight! The next day we woke up early and went to our activities; Tricky trail bikes (biking round a forest course, over and around various objects); cave bus (artificial caving inside a bus); laser tag (shooting each other with lasers – we won!); climbing tower (climbing up a wall with others belaying you); low ropes (a circuit of ropes); archery and free time where you could do art and crafts, go to the prayer tent, go on gyroscope, go on the bouncy castle, try to knock

FRIENDLY HONEST FINANCIAL ADVICE Equity Release - You’re never too old to think again! For this edition we offer something a little different, a guest article, kindly written by one of our clients ‘As a recently widowed lady of a certain age it was always a concern to me that the now popular phrase ‘downsizing’ would be forced upon me before I was ready. I’ve been told by several people to sell up and move on to something smaller which needs less cleaning - but I’m just not ready. I love my home, my mature garden nurtured over many years, my neighbours and that I still have the ability to house my whole family in one sitting even if it is just for high days and holidays. I’ve been an occasional customer of Poole Townsend a few times over the years, after a conversation with my family I thought I’d give them a call to discuss equity release. I learnt to my advantage the market and its regulations have moved on a lot since the the 1980s! The current schemes can insulate you from the old worries such as negative equity and unsavoury lenders. I met with Lyn who took the time to understand my individual circumstances and after a lot of discussion, presented me with a selection of options to consider. She’s very approachable and I was able to call and email her with questions after our meeting. No hard sell followed and no pushy phone calls. Not one of the products Lyn offered me had been presented from my online research. Lyn explained that they have access to offers and products that aren’t broadly advertised and as a result I saved a good deal. In the end I have opted for a draw-down mortgage. This works for me because although I have a lump sum agreed with the lender, I only get charged interest on the money I actually use. There are no monthly repayments to cope with and I have the peace of mind that my family won’t be left with a huge debt as there is a negative equity guarantee built in. All the team at Poole Townsend have been lovely and very supportive during the process which has been surprisingly speedy - less than 2 weeks to a formal offer. I put this down to their efficiency not the lenders and certainly not me. If I had been left to organise everything: credit checks; underwriting; valuation; etc on my own it would have been a much slower process... If it happened at all! Anyway, it’s a big decision so my advice is - get some advice. It’s worked for me, it may not be right for everyone but you don’t know until you ask!’

Grange now | AUGUST 2016 - Next deadline 19th AUGUST
Dear Editor, On Tuesday evening 17th May my husband and I were enjoying a delightful meal with friends at the Netherwood Hotel in Grange-OverSands when he suffered a violent arrhythmic attack which required urgent intervention. I would like to express our deep gratitude to the Hotel staff and, in particular, the theatre sister, whose name we believe is Christine or Elizabeth Rowbotham, who was also dining there, for coming to our aid and for their prompt, calm and reassuring assistance. We have returned home to Thaxted in Essex and I am glad to say that he is receiving appropriate medical attention and is making a positive recovery. Thanks. Christine Knight, Essex
Dear Dr S D Milligan & Dr H M Lovatt, I am writing to congratulate you on your recent CQC rating, which gave the Cartmel Surgery an overall rating of ‘outstanding’. This is a fantastic reflection on the service you provide to the community. With thanks for all that you are doing, Yours sincerely, TIM FARRON MP
Dear Editor I was delighted to read in his County Matters piece that, following a Council surgery, County Councillor Bill Wearing has taken up the issue of a pedestrian crossing at the platform near Yewbarrow Terrace with County Highways. However, I must point out that there is nothing new in this. This proposal, along with suggestions of pedestrian crossings on Main Street near Crown Hill and the Esplanade/Park Road, was included in the Community Led Plan published in November 2014. In the community survey carried out by the CLP Committee there were 78 detailed comments requesting better pedestrian crossings in the town which mentioned these three specific locations. Bill Wearing and the County Council were provided with copies of the CLP Report and Action Plan in 2014 so it is a shame that nearly two years have passed without any action. Can we look forward to some progress now? Malcolm Kimber Former Chairman Grange Community Led Plan Committee

LETTERS
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor, South Cumbria Retirement Band Concert in Grange for Motor Neurone Disease. On a concert took place at Honey Potts in Grange. The plan was for people who attended to admire the wonderful estuary views from the garden, browse the stalls of books, bric-a-brac and the tombola, and spend time enjoying the light music played by the Retirement Band, all to raise funds for the local Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and so help people in this area living with the devastating condition. Unfortunately the weather had its own agenda, and as the music started the rain came down in torrents. Fortunately Honey Potts has a ‘hanger’ which housed the band from the elements, and a ‘bunker’ equipped with TV, and a
Dear Editor, Following Valerie Kennedy’s letter (Grange Now, July 16) and having looked at the Local Plan in more detail, I see that Holbeck Homes Ltd is an interested party in any likely development. Holbeck Homes Ltd is part of the Holker Group. Would I be being too bold to suggest that the opportunity might exist to tap into the perceived relationships and the associated experiences and knowledge of Prince Charles with regard to innovative building design and site development, to deliver alignment with local environmental, economic and social needs and plans? To my mind, whilst for many this
Dear Editor, The Phantom Poster Thief (Part 2) Readers of ‘Grange Now’ may recall a little tale of a poster (for a Grange Drama production) going AWOL – some time ago, granted. There has been a recurrence. Almost certainly not connected, however, in any way. But in this instance, for the recent weekend of Sunday June 26th three separate posters for Prom Art were removed. Their ties had been deliberately cut, probably with a Stanley knife, so it was not a ‘spur of the moment’ thought. In themselves they are not intrinsically valuable; but they have a value in terms of community cohesion. Prom Art does not just ‘happen’, by magic, on a Sunday morning at the end of each summer month. So its posters and banners are an important integral element of publicity. Readers may or may not be aware that Prom Art engenders a footfall of
carport which gave shelter to our welcome and stalwart visitors. Being typically ‘British’ the band played on! Their music was appreciated as a backdrop to the refugees in the ‘bunker’ who were also watching a certain match on TV! The tombola, where there was a prize every time, was a hit amusement, and books disappeared to avid readers! The brave people who attended, and many friends who found the rain too daunting, gave outstanding donations to our cause. We are absolutely delighted to report that from these donations and our takings on the day we have reached a fantastic total of £1422.62. We thank everyone for their support and the many helpers who came on the day, and for the monies which have been sent to me since to reach this wonderful result. Sandra Harding
development will be perceived as a threat, it has to be seen as representing an opportunity. The post Brexit realities facing the country mean that we will have to build more houses and grow our economy whilst meeting the social needs of our citizens in challenging circumstances. Grange has its part to play in this. Growing the local tourist economy must be a prime objective. This can only be achieved if the character of Grange is maintained. The expertise and experience to balance these two needs is out there. Those in power just need to tap into it in ways like the one I suggest. Name and address supplied
perhaps 2000 people per event; this can be proven. Where do they go afterwards? They circulate around Grange, unsurprisingly! Poking around in shops which have the nous to remain open - for visitors to Grange are always enticed by its broad array and unusual variety of individual shops! And then sitting in our cafés, restaurants and hotels which provide the best of succulent fare. As a resident, I am privileged to walk along the Prom in the quiet of the early evening, day after day, inhaling all its various attributes. ‘Inhale’ is a word that refers, primarily, to the lungs. But everyone can also inhale through their eyes and their ears. And in so doing exult in their surroundings. Prom Art introduces folk to Grange and to its unique soul; why would any local resident deny them that pleasure – by the removal of posters? Pete Nightingale – Event Organiser – Prom Art
LEGAL TALK With
Martin Oates Partner
FREE LEGAL ADVICE Wednesday 2–4pm Home visits available Bereavement- we can help Losing someone close to you is difficult, whether it is expected or not. Day to day tasks which might ordinarily be easy can become big hurdles and you can get bogged down and lost.
You are faced with challenges such as how to register the death and how to deal with the house, personal possessions and finances of someone who has died. What about pensions? The tax office? State benefits? What about other family members- who is responsible for all this? You should get advice from someone who knows what they are doing, from experience and who can be independent as they are not caught up the in the emotional turmoil. Registering a death is not difficult in itself, but it is a question of knowing where to go and what information to take. It is a sobering task and really brings home, in stark terms, the fact that you have lost that person. Our local Registrars are a sympathetic and helpful team but it is still a big job to do If the person died in hospital, you need to go there first to collect the medical certificate for the cause of death. Again, despite the best efforts of the sympathetic staff at the Hospital, this can be an upsetting experience.
If they did not die in hospital, the certificate is issued by the Doctor certifying the death. Registration is usually by a relative. If no relative is available then anyone present at the death or the person paying for the funeral can register. You need to make an appointment with the Registrar who needs certain information, including the name of the person who has died, their date and place of birth and death. The Registrar will ask their occupation, home address, whether they were receiving any state benefits and details of any spouse whether surviving or not.
If a death has been referred to the Coroner, the Coroner's Officer will issue an interim death certificate, to be used until after the inquest or until the coroner has decided that none is needed. The undertakers organising the funeral will need the papers from the Registrar’s office to then go ahead with the arrangements.
And you need to organise the financial side of things, getting a Grant of Probate and realising and distributing assets. Again, it is not rocket science but is an unwelcome job at a time of great loss and sadness.
For many people, the first time that they set foot inside a solicitor's office is after they have lost someone close to them. We offer help and advice on the procedures and the information you will need. We can register the death for you. We can sort out the Grant of Probate and full administration of their estate. We take away the stress so that you can concentrate on what is important.

Mayor’s Report
As some of you will know, a few days after the last Council meeting I flew out to Australia for three weeks to visit my son who lives in Brisbane. This has meant that the only Mayoral activities I have been engaged in this month has been the meeting and greeting of a group of American tourists who visited the town. Over their coffee and scones topped with cream, we talked about the town, the Lake District and their impressions of the country as a whole. They all seemed very enthusiastic about Grange and went off after their refreshments to view the Promenade, the Ornamental Gardens and the shops. Although I have not been around, my deputy, Councillor Peter Endsor has been very busy at local events. Despite the weather, the Strawberry Tea held at the Old Vicarage was a great success and he enjoyed
showrooms, it is worth going to both to see what is available. As an independent, they offer the best of British and Continental kitchens - including LochAnna, Alno, Virtu, Britannia, Neff, Bosch, Samsung and Impuls - and also an outstanding range of over fifteen high-end suppliers of bathroom and sanitary ware. Their bespoke fitted bedrooms come from the beautiful and distinct range by Hepplewhite (part of the well known Hammonds group). The DEL showroom in Ulverston is open Monday to Saturday, and the Witherslack showroom all week except Wednesday - just call in or give them a ring on 01229 581043 or 015395 52411 - and turn your dream into reality!
meeting the many residents and visitors there. An invitation to the Grange Art Society Annual Exhibition was also very much appreciated, to the extent that he purchased one of the paintings on show! I think, however, that the School Olympics was the high point for him – he was not only delighted and amazed at what the children taking part could achieve but also with the meticulous organisation of so many children taking part in so many events without any hitches at all. To all these event organisers we would both like to take the opportunity to say a hearty ‘Thank you’ for the invitation as well as all the hard work, time and energy involved in undertakings of this sort. The next Councillor Surgery will be held at the Library on Saturday August 13th from 10am until noon. If for some reason the Library is closed we will move to the Victoria Hall.
