We are about to start a series of old photographs looking back in time. Grange Now have been given a fabulous collection of old photographs from across the peninsula. Starting next edition, we will be publishing our pick of the best from each area. They are a fascinating look back in time and I am sure will be of interest to many. We very much welcome your feedback, if you have a story relating to one of the photographs, or wish to contribute in any way to this series.
Our congratulations to local residents and the staff of the Guides Lot recycling centre on becoming the first in the county to achieve an overall recycling rate of over 80%. Well done. Grange in Bloom Awards
Judging for this year’s Grange in Bloom Awards took place during week commencing 1st August.
One of the Grange in Bloom judges, Jan Tomlinson told Grange Now: “The Grange in Bloom judges went round the town to inspect the floral displays of businesses, churches, hotels and large managed apartments. The displays were judged on impact of planting and quality of maintenance, not on quantity of displays so it is very important to always keep the displays well watered and fed. They are marked out of 40 points, with gold 36-40 points, Silver Gilt 31-35 points, Silver 26-30 points and Highly Commended 21-25 points. This year many achieved a gold award for their colourful and well maintained displays. We would like to make a special mention this year to the businesses along Windermere Road who have planted up the wall - it looks stunning.”
Jan would also like to point out that the Grange in Bloom group will be continuing to judge the businesses in town but what they are not doing is entering the town into Cumbria in Bloom. She hopes this clears up any confusion.

You may or may not have heard of 33 year old Ben Smith. Ben is currently running 401 marathons in 401 consecutive days. A huge challenge to say the least, but why is he doing it? There are several reasons and the main outcome of this feat is to raise £250,000 for Kidscape and Stonewall, two anti-bullying charities. Ben was the victim of bullies during his school years. Things got so bad that it led him to try and take his own life, not once but twice. You can read his inspiring story on his website and it is also full of ways in which you can either help out, or donate.
Ben Smith - Exorcising demons
Have you been affected by bullying? If you have been affected by bullying there are lots of people you can talk to: siblings, parents, friends, teachers, your family doctor or several anti-bullying groups such as the two which Ben is fundraising for: Stonewall Acceptance without exception: www.stonewall.org.uk Kidscape www.kidscape.org.uk www.the401challenge.co.uk
MAIN: Ben Smith (right grey top) and the Allithwaite runners outside Allithwaite Post Office RIGHT: Ben with Jim Robson and Paula Wyatt (organiser)
On hearing about Ben’s challenge, Paula Wyatt from Allithwaite Post Office decided to organised a run. Unfortunately, two weeks prior to the run, Paula was rushed into hospital to have her spleen removed. Undeterred, she organised the whole thing from her hospital bed! Despite being in obvious pain, Paula managed to come out to greet Ben and the runners and, not one to let anyone down, she had also laid on food and drink for the runners to have during their first break. One local runner, Gill Longfellow, ran with Ben and she also intends to run in the final marathon in Bristol and is already fundraising for it.
and support from locals was fantastic but people also came from out of the area. Charlotte (10) and Martha (5) came from Chorley with their mum, Anne Kidd. They were both holding an A3 poster which they had made for Ben. Charlotte, unfortunately, is also the victim of bullies and she wanted to tell Ben about her experience in a letter which she brought with her. He discussed it quietly with her before chatting to both sisters and taking a selfie with them. There were also runners from Barrow, Warrington and Manchester.
Ben’s story has struck a chord with many people. Turnout

Little Britain win Big!
For a nation of (just!) 64 million people, making up around 0.9% of the global population, Britain did remarkably well in this year’s Olympic Games at Rio in Brazil.
October but it won’t just end there for Ben. He told me: “I can’t just stop running after the last marathon. My body is now used to consuming a massive amount of calories a day and the effect of running at least 26 miles a day to just stop would have a huge detrimental effect on my body. A programme has already been set out whereby I will continue to run every day which will slowly be phased down but it will take until 5th January 2017 for me to be able to stop completely.”
Hauling in a whopping 67 medals, 27 of which were gold, our British athletes should be very proud of themselves! Our successes in cycling, rowing, athletics, gymnastics, sailing, tennis and across the board led us to take 2nd place in the global medal table. We were pipped to the post (quite substantially!) by our neighbors across the pond, with the United States winning an incredible 121 medals! However, our athletes still beat China, Russia, Australia, Germany and Brazil with their achievements. We should rightly enjoy our moment in the sun and be very proud of the great athletes that our little island is turning out!

The first recycling centre to reach 80%
Thanks to the recycling efforts of the residents of Cartmel Peninsula, Guide’s Lot, Grange’s household recycling centre (the tip!) is the first centre to achieve an overall recycling rate of 80%. Cllr Bill Wearing told Grange Now: “As local member I welcome this recycling achievement by our residents and this shows a major commitment by us all to recycling which besides being environmentally friendly also saves us money”. Cumbria County Council’s Waste management Team said of the achievement: “The residents of Grange should be very proud of their efforts in recycling. Guides Lot, Grange’s household waste recycling
centre, is the first HWRC in Cumbria to achieve an overall recycling rate of 80%. This is an impressive rate, a result of the combined efforts of the local residents and staff working at the HWRC who together have been so diligent at separating waste received at the site into the different recycling containers. Thanks must go to all involved for their support in helping deliver this impressive achievement, including local councillor Bill Wearing, the County Council’s waste management team and waste management contractors.”

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS
Last month we briefly touched on the likely economic impact of the UKs Brexit vote and this month we turn our attention to investors. There are several key financial planning principles which need to be considered to arrive at your financial planning strategy. These include: • Diversification i.e. what proportion to place in equities, fixed interest, cash etc. • Tax efficiency i.e. maximizing tax free allowances such as income tax, capital gains tax, ISA etc. • Time horizon. • Flexibility i.e. to move between different funds, to turn income on/off etc. • Risk profile i.e. what level of risk are you prepared to take and can afford to take.

Within this context the Brexit vote is no different – it will create opportunities and pose threats and some markets will gain and others will not but, as they always have done, they will go through cycles. Only if an investor is withdrawing capital when any market is low will they actually feel the impact otherwise an investor’s portfolio will absorb market reactions (whether it be shares, bonds etc.) as they would with any other cycle. If you have not done so already it would be sensible to check that your asset allocation and diversification does indeed meet with your objectives and the key financial planning principles highlighted above.

IN BRIEF
Dr Golding bids farewell
After 10 years with Nutwood Medical Practice, Dr Dan Golding is leaving the Practice. He will be sadly missed by our patients and the Practice team. Dr Katharine Bibby will be joining us at the beginning of October.
End of an era
Most of you will probably already know but Holker Estate have held their last Garden Festival. After twenty four years of this iconic event, organisers said in a press release that: “We have taken the difficult decision to bring the Garden Festival to a close in order to devote more time and energy to refreshing our annual events programme across the Estate”. The Garden Festival will be sadly missed by many.
Christmas tree festival won’t be held at St Paul’s
Due to ongoing building work at St Paul’s Church in Grange, they will not be able to hold their Christmas Tree Festival this year. A spokesperson for the church told Grange Now: “The festival has been a wonderful event for the last three years and raised much needed funds for local charities. The church would like to thank all their past contributors whom they hope to see at their 2017 festival.”
Thirteen weeks to go
It’s hard to believe but it is only thirteen weeks until the Charity Christmas Fair in Victoria Hall. Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas and Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines are already planning the now annual event which will take place on Saturday 3rd December. If your charity would like a free table at this event please get in touch with Sally as soon as possible on 015395 32375.
On Sunday 14th August, Grange held its first bakeoff thanks to a collaborative effort from Grange Lions and Grange WI. Those who entered, provided a mouthwatering display of cakes and traybakes. Contestant’s wares were marked, ‘Yummy’ (Y), ‘Very Yummy’ (VY) or ‘Unbelievably Yummy’ (UY). Overall ‘Unbelievably Yummy’ winner was Shirley Chamberlain with her savoury scones. Shirley also entered a Victoria Sponge, various biscuits and her husband even had a go baking up some rather tasty looking flapjack. Kents Bank Mum, Sarah Stephenson, put on a magnificent display of cupcakes: white chocolate mud, chocolate fudge, toffee tumbles, and passion crowns which earned Sarah two ‘unbelievably yummy’s’ and ‘a very yummy’. All entries were tasted by two judges who are WI members from outwith the Grange Branch. Entries were judged on taste and overall appearance and the judges said they were impressed with the standard. Afternoon tea was then served and the raffle was drawn at 3pm. Winner

of the midweek hot tub holiday at the Crake Valley holiday park was Joan Hill. Joan had come along to the bake off to enjoy a birthday treat with friends so winning the holiday was a great present and she was delighted. Dave Khan, President of Grange Lions told Grange Now: “Working with Janet Ferguson and Grange WI has been a great experience. They contributed a great deal of expertise despite being very committed to other things. The Victoria Hall is such a great facility and
although I have a very demanding business I will definitely be doing this next year . Grange has a very unique group of residents who give a great deal of time and money to good causes. It makes this area such a great place to live.” Next year, they plan to run the event a little later in the day, possibly 3pm till 5pm and they have quite a few other good ideas up their sleeve as well.

Cheshire beat Cumbria on the last hole
Why should I make a Will? Sometimes even if you have a will there can be unfortunate results if you have not reviewed your will for some time and it has become out of date, for example, if you have divorced, married, have new children or grandchildren, a beneficiary has died before you or you no longer own assets mentioned in your will. Making a will is important to ensure that you do not leave any problems for those who survive you. It does not make dying any easier, but it does make the practicalities of administering the estate less traumatic for those left behind. We offer free will reviews and fixed fees for wills and are happy to give a quotation in all cases. Grange over Sands Golf Club has been rewarded for all their hard work over the last few months by being awarded the honour of staging the very prestigious Seniors County Match, Cumbria versus Cheshire, featuring the best players’ in their respective counties. The match was played on Monday 8th August with the outcome undecided right down to the very last game. The final score was 10 – 8 in favour of Cheshire, who were full of praise for the condition
of the course. The President of Grange over Sands golf club commented on the standard of golf and the excellent condition of the course,to be able to stage an event of this magnitude so soon after the serious flooding encountered earlier in the year is a testament to the hard work of the green-keeping staff and the many volunteers, the club were grateful for the support they had received from Cumbria County Council, the Environment Agency and Network Rail plus local and county councillors in bringing the club back from the brink.
Tim’s Column
Firstly apologies for a couple of significant omissions from my last column in Grange Now. I failed to congratulate Chris and his team on reaching the 300th edition of Grange Now. As I am sure you are all aware you are extremely lucky to have this publication keeping you informed of what goes on in Grange and the surrounding areas delivered free to your doors every month.
I also omitted to congratulate the team at Cartmel Surgery in achieving an outstanding rating in their most recent CQC inspection. Following on from the outstanding rating of the Nutwood Practice earlier this year this high quality health care is yet another factor in what makes living in the Grange and Cartmel area so very special.
As many of you will know I ran my annual Summer Surgery Tour last month. I travelled around the constituency, visiting the smaller places like Backbarrow and Allithwaite that I don’t get to visit as often as I would like. This tour is a really important event in my year as it allows me to find out what people are worried about and what they think of how I am doing my job. Of course the hospital in Kendal was mentioned by lots of people. The tour came just after we won our campaign to save the Kentmere Mental Health Ward but people were still concerned

about the future of other services at the hospital. I promised to do all I can to ensure that not only do we keep and improve the services that are there but that we get the new ones we need like the radiotherapy unit we have been campaigning for. Another issue that was raised was concern about crime. This was before we learned of 10 bullocks being stolen from a field in Cartmel the other day. Recent figures have suggested that rural crime in the North West of England is growing seven times faster than the national average for growth in crime. Last year the Government tried to drastically reduce the funding that they provide for our policing in Cumbria. Fortunately in the face of massive opposition they backed down but this was only a temporary change of mind, there is every chance that they will try to reintroduce their plans later this year. I will do all I can to prevent them from doing so.
As ever if I can help you with these or any other issues then please email me at tim@timfarron. co.uk or calling 01539 723 403 or you can come along to meet me at my surgery at Victoria Hall on the 16th September. Thanks for your support, Tim

Disappointing turnout for councillor surgeries On Saturday 13th August, Cllr Tom Harvey and Cllr. Tricia Thomas held a councillor surgery, between 10am and 12 noon, at the Library. Sadly, no-one attended and, due to poor attendance at previous surgeries, a decision was taken at the Grange Full Town Council meeting on Monday 15th August to reduce these meetings to twice a year. Cllr Thomas suggested that a bi-annual surgery, with representatives from the Town, District and County Council, would probably be more beneficial and hopefully better attended. Please feel free to contact your councillor with any issues through the Council offices 015395 32375.

FOOD & DRINK
PLUM AND ALMOND SPONGES Plums from the Low Sizergh Farm orchards are on the brink of ripeness and almost ready to pick. They are juicy and moreish and work beautifully in this recipe devised in the Low Sizergh kitchens, which sees them paired with almonds. The only secret to making this a successful bake is to resist eating the fruit before you get chance to cook with them. Method
The Sponge 150g margarine 150g caster sugar 3 Low Sizergh Farm eggs, beaten 150g Self raising flour 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla essence The Plums 12 small plums cut in half and stones removed 25g flaked almonds 50g caster sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 180C, 160C fan assisted, gas mark 4 2. Cream together margarine, vanilla essence and caster sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs with a tablespoon of the flour 3. Fold in the remainder of the flour until well combined. Grease the muffin tray, and add a light dusting of flour 4. Divide the sponge between the 12 muffin spaces 5. Place the plums pieces on top of the sponge mix 6. Mix together the cinnamon, sugar and almonds and sprinkle over the sponge and plums. 7. Bake for 25 minutes, allow to cool then remove from the tin. Serve with ice cream or cream

Grange Bakery has been awarded a ‘1-star Great Taste’ award for its Gluten Free Chocolate Torte. The judges said: “There is a rustic look to the tart, which is cleverly constructed. The thick ganache layer is very creamy.” “Well achieved for a gluten free cake”. The ganache is created by
using the finest belgium chocolate and rich organic cream from Swarthmoor Hall Farm, Ulverston. The gluten-free torte was one of 10,000 products sampled by the judges who were made up of food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists.
It’s a family affair at the Rose & Crown NEW Raw Milk
On 13th June, Pauline and Steve Jackson took over The Rose & Crown in Cark.
Originally from Silloth, Steve used to run the Manor House Restaurant and Caravan Park and has worked in the catering and hospitality industry since 1975. Pauline comes from a background in care and they are both keen to develop the warm, friendly, happy atmosphere of a traditional inn. It’s a real family business with not only Nathan and Daniel, Pauline and Steve’s two boys, working with them but Pauline’s parents, Gary and Linda, have also been crucial in their help and support from the start. Steve and Daniel are responsible for the food and provide traditional pub food with a modern twist. All locally sourced, and cooked fresh on the premises, their pies are already proving to be a resounding success. On the ‘specials’ board they currently offer their own scrumptious BBQ pulled pork as a special and haddock and chips for two with a bottle of Prosecco!

Cumbria Wildlife Trust wins community award
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Cumbria Wildlife Trust has recently been awarded a Spirit of the Community Award for its work at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve near Witherslack. The award, which is run by the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation, is made to charities which make a real difference to their local environment.
The £5,000 award will be spent on the installation of a new all-access wheelchair and pushchairfriendly boardwalk at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve. The boardwalk will further improve access by visitors to this stunning natural environment, which is currently home to a pair of nesting ospreys and their chicks. Cumbria Wildlife Trust also plans to install information

boards to guide visitors to what they might see and enjoy on the nature reserve and to produce a new guide, so that people can enjoy self-led visits. The ospreys and their chicks, which hatched in May, are proving very popular with visitors to the reserve. On most days a
telescope is available for visitors to see the osprey nest at first hand.
Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve is free to enter and can be found off the A590 near Witherslack. Live footage from the nest can be viewed at www. cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk/ osprey-cam
The Fall
Sometimes change goes unnoticed, until the process has already begun. Maybe it’s a question of just turning the lights on a little earlier in the evening and waking when it’s a little darker outside in the morning. Seasonal changes can be subtle. The birds are almost silent compared to earlier and there is a heavier dew in the morning air. Seed heads, rather than flowers in the wild meadows, fewer fly bys from butterflies and dragonflies and the
grasshoppers chirr soon fades away. The colours in the landscape change too. The grasses appear dull and the trees and shrubs begin to glow like embers in the cool. New life will visit soon for sanctuary. shortly birds will silently
invade our shores, some not so silent and others will leave for warmer climes. Mysterious fungi appear and gradually the glowing embers will fall. Welcome, autumn. Tony Saunders. Hon. Reserve Manager Brown Robin

SUP, or Stand Up Paddle-boarding was something I had often wondered about trying, having often seen idyllic looking photographs of people floating effortlessly across serene lakes in the Canadian Rockies, and having watched group after group of keen young teenagers in the English Lakes try their hand at the sport.
When the opportunity arose to try it out I could not turn the offer down. Our neighbours kindly lent us their equipment and after a brief introduction on how to fit the small fin to the bottom of the board, and a reminder that the boards are a little expensive and that if they were returned in any condition other than the one they were presently in then we may be eating grass butties for the next month, we were off! We drove out of our home in Eskdale with paddles and wetsuits in the boot, and two big boards strapped to the roof, and set off for Wasdale. It is worth noting the date of this particular “micro-adventure” was Wednesday the 20th of July - a day on which many will remember for waking up to flashes of lightning, giant cracks of thunder, and pounding sheets of heavy rain! Regardless, we ventured off, as the storm was beginning to subside, and by the time we were set up and ready to paddle off, the sun was starting to come out and we were able to enjoy fantastic views of Great Gable and the Scafells.
At first we waded out a little way, so as not to scrape the fin on the rocky lake bed, then we clambered on board, somewhat ungraciously! I was a bit wobbly at first and every paddle stroke I took seemed to turn me 45 degrees away from where I wanted to go. However, five minutes in and we were making tracks down the north side of the lake into a weak westerly wind. Once we had become accustomed to the balancing act we even managed a headstand! Paddle boarding was such a relaxing experience and also quite a workout when we were racing into the wind! I would thoroughly recommend trying it out to anyone who gets the chance! Thanks a million to our neighbours at West Lakes Adventure, in Eskdale Valley, for lending us the equipment! No grass butty diet required!

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE
The first of the ‘ember’ months and time to admit that summer’s almost gone.
It’s a month of extremes; euphoric sunny days are the time to make the most of the dwindling summer and cold days are an unnerving reminder of the encroaching approaching winter. It’s not quite time to run home and hide under the duvet yet though, there’s still a lot that you can get on with.
Make sure any remaining onions and potatoes are lifted and put into storage - you can dry the onions out in a greenhouse or cold frame for a few days if it’s wet. You can plait the stalks together for hanging up if you’re feeling a bit fancy. Potatoes also need to dry for a few hours after lifting, preferably on the surface of the soil in the sunshine and then stored somewhere dry, dark and cool.
It’s not just the cold and damp you have to preserve your potatoes from ….as their natural wild food sources become more scarce, rats can be spectacularly destructive at this time of year. Potatoes, squashes even red cabbage can be damaged and they have an uncanny knack of knowing exactly when sweetcorn is perfect, and it’s usually day before you realise it is. If you haven’t already done this, complete summer pruning of apples; this entails shortening the sappy new growth to a couple of sets of leaves. This lets the sun onto the fruit and the extra heat helps them to ripen and sweeten, turning starches into sugars, and the improved airflow should help prevent the fruit from spoiling. Make sure you remove any rotten fruit from the tree, rain can splash fungal spores onto uncontaminated fruit. I also think it’s worth removing fallen fruit from the ground as this can attract wasps. The menace of a lairy, nihilistic sugar drunk wasp is significantly magnified when you’re perched on top of a ladder with an armful of apples at harvest time.

Local pub rises to the challenge once again
No strangers to fundraising, The Pheasant Inn in Allithwaite, heard about Stuart Bricklebank’s decision to walk part of the Great Wall of China in aid of pancreatic cancer, and decided to get involved. Charlotte organised a raffle with the prize being either a £100 voucher for The Pheasant or a four night break at Fernleigh Cottage donated by Charlotte. The winners, Mrs Ryden and her son chose the cottage break and the raffle raised a fantastic £1000 total for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

County Matters This month there are a number of people who deserve our thanks.
I was pleased to see so many people at the Historic Vehicle Day at the Grange Playing Fields on Sunday 14th August. We had well over 200 vehicles present ranging from the 1920’s to the 1990’s.My congratulations must go to Geoff Critchley and his team for making such a wonderfully entertaining day.
Mayor’s Report
Jackie and I had a busy Sunday attending a truly delightful Bake Off and Afternoon Tea at the Victoria Hall. This event, organised by Grange WI and the Lions, was a real treat. The entries in the baked goods competitions looked very toothsome and I was somewhat glad not to have been asked to be a judge. It must have been exceedingly difficult.
to relive motoring from the past and to examine the cars and motorcycles and talk to their owners. There are also donated prizes on offer which were presented to the winning competitors by the Mayor of Grange, Cllr Tricia Thomas and her consort, Jackie Bailey. The show has previously made donations to many good causes and the beneficiary in 2016 is www.bendrigg.org which provides outdoor activity courses, for disabled and disadvantaged people of all ages and abilities.
Thanks must go to all the Library Volunteers for their patience whilst the County have sorted out the arrangements. They should be in place by the end of the month. Another positive story is that the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Guides Lot in Grange has achieved an overall recycling rate of 80%. Thank you to everyone for achieving this and to the County Council staff working at the site for their massive contribution. Having chatted to a number of those partaking in a truly scrumptious tea we wended our way down to the Playing field to attend the annual Historic Vehicle Rally. So many beautiful cars, so pristine, even down to shiny engines. It makes you wonder if they get out at every traffic light and have a quick polish under the bonnet! As usual at this event, there was a great atmosphere and the owners were happy to talk about and

Don’t miss out on free central heating The Cumbria-wide ‘Warm Homes’ scheme, which is being administered locally by South Lakeland District Council, could pay for the installation of a full central heating system. This would either be a gas system including the connection to the gas main or, if this is not possible, an oilfuelled system. To be eligible, customers have to meet certain criteria. They must be either in receipt of certain benefits, or have a total annual household income of less than £15,600 and live in a property built before 1920. The property must not already have a gas main connection or an existing central heating system fuelled by oil or LPG. Electrically heated homes or those with a solid fuel back boiler and a partial central heating system may also qualify. For full details of the scheme, see if you are eligible, and to request application forms, call SLDC’s Housing Standards Team on 01539 793 376. A spokesperson for SLDC told Grange Now that if you apply now there is every chance that your new central heating will be fitted before the bad weather sets in.
I have had residents wishing to contribute to the County Council Scrutiny Task Group on Autism. I have passed on this information to our County Officers and Members involved in the task group and will keep you all informed on the recommendations and conclusions that come out of the investigation. It was a real pleasure to hand out the prizes, though as in the Bake Off – how do they choose the winners? I would like to say a huge thank you to the organisers of both events for all their hard work – they bring real enjoyment to the town. Cllr. Tricia Thomas, Mayor.

SCHOOL REPORT Born in 1838 in East Lothian, Scotland, John Muir is considered to be the founding father of the modern conservation movement.
The John Muir Award
Grange Primary Tennis champs
The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme named after him. It encourages people to be more aware of nature and wild places, and to take some responsibility for them in a spirit of fun and adventure. All students at Cartmel Priory School have the chance to take part in the Award (4 days) at the end of Year 7 and Year 9 students can opt into the Explorer Award (8 days). The Award requires the students to:

For the second year running, Public Health England (PHE) is strongly encouraging people, aged up to 25, who are going to college or university this autumn to get vaccinated against meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) due to the MenW bug.
These young people are particularly at risk because they mix with so many other students, some of whom are unknowingly carrying the bacteria. Local GPs will be writing to the affected age groups.

Leven Valley head leads the way in water safety
Bookshelf
In the weeks before school finished, several local primary schools took their Year 5 & 6 children to various lakes in the area.
The monthly Dementia Information Session will be held on Tuesday 6th September (10.30 am to 12.30 pm) when a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society will be available to provide advice and guidance for diagnosed individuals and their family and friends. No need to book, just turn up.
Leven Valley, Allithwaite, Grange and Hawkshead all took part in various sessions aimed at keeping our children safe in the water. Being confident in a swimming pool is one thing but once they are in open water there are plenty of dangers to be watchful for.
Jacqui Young from Waterwise Cumbria was the instructor for these sessions and she told Grange Now: “Waterwise Cumbria was born 2 years ago when Ian Nicol, Headteacher of Leven Valley school, asked me to provide water safety training for his year 5/6 class. Children in the Lakes don’t get any water safety training, even though we live next to some amazing bodies of water. I went away and developed 3 sessions on how to be safe in around the water margin and also give the children some key water safety message. Session I: teach the children the SAFE code (Spot the danger, Ask for advice, Go with Friends and know what to do in an Emergency). HELP (heat escape lessening position). HUDDLE position and we have lots of fun getting in the water by rescuing ducks and having short relay
Cartmel Adult Education Centre will be in the Library on 7th September from 10 am to 12.30 pm to take your course enrolments. If you want to learn something new or maybe continue on your existing course then come in and talk to the Centre staff.

races. All the children are wearing wet suits, bright swim hats, water shoes and start with a noodle, so they are really buoyant. By the end of the session, most of the children are swimming without the noodle. We swim round coloured buoys and then we safely jump off the jetty.
Session 2: I teach the children the SHOUT and SIGNAL rescue then move onto a REACH and THROW rescue, key message is not to get in the water. Then in the water to build on their first session, more swimming and building up confidence in open water. Session 3: Recap on the safety positions, SAFE code and try and get the children to swim a bit further, maybe

Most of these session are run from the Low Wood water sports centre and we are very grateful to them for letting us use their facilities free of charge. That said, I am always on the lookout for new venues, so if anyone knows of someone with some waterfront access on Coniston or Lake Windermere then I would be interested in hearing from them. It will help with the development of essential water safety training for young people in Cumbria”. The 3rd Borderlines Book Festival will be held in Carlisle with events between 29th September and 9th October. There will be workshops and talks from authors including Alexander McCall Smith, Val McDermid, Salley Vickers, Alan Johnson, Alison Weir and many more! Information and booking details are available in the Library. A couple of advance notices. From 7th October we will be selling Charity Christmas cards and gifts, so there will be plenty of time to write your Christmas cards before the last posting dates. On 8th November we will be welcoming author Jean Briggs to the Library to talk about her new novel, Murder by Ghostlight - full details to follow next month.
You may be aware that the Library Car Park has been re-lined. There are now 2 clearly designated parking spaces for drivers with disabled badges and marked staff and delivery parking spaces. We hope this will make the parking situation clearer for all drivers using the Library. Please note that our Opening Times changed on 1st August 2016. We are now open 10 am to 1 pm Monday to Saturday and 2 pm to 5 pm Monday to Friday. We have flyers available with our new opening times and the new opening times of other local Libraries. CHURCH NEWS
St Paul’s Grange Charles Edmondson and Nigel Duce treated us to a wonderfully entertaining lunchtime concert recently with their programme of piano and organ duets. Following a delicious lunch the audience were treated to a variety of compositions from mainly French composers. The highlight being Debussy’s La Cathédrale Engloutie which Charles had especially arranged for us. These lunchtime concerts in church are extremely popular and our next one will be held on the 12th October.
In November 2009, Rev’d Canon Nick Ash was inducted as the Team Rector of the Team Ministry. We didn’t realise what an important influence Nick was to become in our lives and how our churches would flourish under his leadership. Many people will, no doubt, be saddened to learn that, at the end of September, Nick will be leaving us and moving away from Grange. We are holding an informal service, to which all are invited, at 6pm on Wednesday 28th September in St Paul’s for an opportunity to say thank you and goodbye to Nick. A reception and buffet will
Churches Together welcome new youth worker Prompted and supported by Grange and District Churches Together, the Youth Trust was formed ten years ago to support Christian youth ministry. The aims are: to give every young person in the Cartmel peninsula area the opportunity to encounter and learn about the Christian faith; To support and encourage those young people who have made a commitment in faith or who wish to find out more; To support and coordinate activities with young people undertaken by individual churches; To build ‘youth church’.
St Mary’s, Allithwaite
Sunday, July 17th was a typical British summer day, cool and breezy but with plenty of sunshine too. Following the morning service, a good number of church members and other friends drove to a beach on the the east side of Coniston Water armed with folding chairs and a picnic lunch. The reason for this occasion 22
The Trust has employed a number of youth workers since September 2008. Network Youth Church Leader, Chris Mason, welcomes new parttime youth worker, Libby Cuthbertson. Libby lives in Ulverston with husband Stu, their dog Spot and their cat Millie. She grew up in Devon with three sisters and her job as an outdoor instructor has taken her all over the country and finally brought her to the Lakes 11 years ago. She is really looking forward to starting her new job in the Grange area.
was to witness the baptism of one of the older children, 7 year old Joshua, who had expressed a wish to declare his faith in Jesus by being baptised by immersion. After lunch, and a short baptismal service led by the Rev’d Rachel Stavert, he was baptised in the lake. Subsequently, several others joined Rachel and took the opportunity for a swim in the lake before enjoying some delicious cakes, provided by Joshua’s family, to round off a very special occasion.
follow the service to which all are also warmly invited. St Paul’s has now been given permission, by the diocese, to reorder some areas of the inside of the church and create a path from the car park to the main entrance. They now await SLDC planning permission and then they can go out to tender. The first phase will see the creation of: a new office, flower room, an additional WC, fully fitted kitchen and an extended social area. The path from the car park will end in an extensive welcoming area around the entrance with wrought iron railings, lamps and newly planted terracing.
Grange and District Churches Together September sees a significant move in the Churches of Grange coming together. Beginning in September, the United Reformed Church, and the Methodist Church in Grange are to meet together on two Sundays per month. The combined congregation will meet on the second Sunday in the month in the United Reformed Church building. On the third Sunday the gathering together will be in the Methodist building. On 17th September, Churches Together in Cumbria have their annual ‘Celebrating Together’. This year it is ‘Rooted and Grounded in Love: a prayer taster day’ at Ambleside St Mary’s Church and Church Centre. £12. Book by email: hbctic@tiscali,co,uk or Helen on 07503 931196 On 21st September, there will be a meeting of C. T. in Grange at St Paul’s Church in the afternoon beginning at 2pm.
On Sunday, July 31st – being a fifth Sunday in the month – we enjoyed a rather different morning service. Several members of varying ages chose a favourite song or hymn which had special significance for them. It has been good to welcome a number of holiday makers and other visitors to our services over recent weeks and details of our services are available on the church website. allithwaitechurch.org.uk.

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank
By Matron Well, we have all had a busy time these past few weeks; the gardeners have been reaping abundant crops of fruit and vegetables. The kitchen has been creating wonderful meals with the produce for us and jars of delicious chutneys are filling pantry shelves. We sell our produce in the nursing home, but you have to be quick otherwise, blink and it’s gone. We have said sad farewells to some staff members who have moved away from the area to be with family and some to start exciting new times in their lives. On the flip side we have said cheery hellos to new members, Boarbank is buzzing with inductions and it’s always nice to see new smiling faces greet me in the morning. We had our 2 yearly inspection from CQC and I’m pleased to say we passed with flying colours. Telephone: 015395 32288 manager@boarbankhall.org.uk

Mother’s Union Celebration A service of celebration, led by the Rev. David Wilmott, was held at the Parish Church of St Anne’s, Ings on Tuesday 9th August. It was attended by branches from Windermere, Ings, Staveley, Cartmel and Flookburgh and approximately 60 members were present. It was followed by a sumptuous tea, banners and balloons and birthday cake. Candles were light and Happy Birthday Mothers’ Union was sung. It was a very happy occasion.
Tottlebank Church “The Phoenix Singers” will be rising again at Tottlebank Baptist Church (Nr. Greenodd) on Sat 24 September at 7.30pm to entertain us with their renditions of Songs New and Old.

VISIT OUR NEW PREMISES AT REGENT HOUSE Open Mon to Fri 9am–5pm and Sat 9am–1pm We’re proud of our Property Team. You may not realise how much they do to secure the sale of your property…
We listen to you
It may sound simple, but so many companies do not really listen to their clients. We understand we need to know what makes your house special, so that we can really sell to prospective buyers. Our friendly team and their local knowledge make it easy!
Talk Talk Talk
We don’t mean over a morning coffee and the biscuit tin! Our Team talk all day, every day, to a whole host of people... ll Prospective Purchasers - The majority of the time people do not buy the house they originally rang to view – The internet cannot tell you all the little quirks. ll Prospective purchasers follow up - If the house they viewed wasn’t for them we want to know why not? Is it something that can be easily changed so it does become their dream house? ll Purchasers - Our sales negotiators talk to Purchasers every week if not more. We understand buying a house is a huge purchase and can be a scary time. ll Surveyors – We all want your house to value at the price your purchaser is paying. Surveyors often travel from way out of area to carry out surveys – it’s our job to provide them with real, local comparable house prices to ensure your house is valued correctly. ll Contractors - Our sales negotiators have a well used address book full of local contacts who they can call on to ensure the job gets done. ll Mortgage Advisors - Our sales team will ring mortgage advisers all the time – chasing up applications, finding out when surveys are due, checking if there is any work needed and if the purchaser needs any help arranging quotes. ll Solicitors - Very often there can be long chains of properties all looking to complete at the same time, your solicitor can only speak to your purchaser’s solicitor. We can speak to every solicitor, estate agent, mortgage advisor in the chain, and we do, all the time. ll You - Most importantly, we speak to you! We only get paid when we sell your property and the sale reaches a successful conclusion – you are the most important person. Our Property Team are here to provide you with guidance and support every step of the way. Our local, expert knowledge enables us to offer a completely bespoke service every time. Dear Editor, Fundraising in aid of Rett research . Last Sunday 14th August supporters of four different charities walked across the bay from Arnside to Kents Bank. We identified “our” supporters with Reverse Rett stickers so we know that 133 walkers men, women, children and dogs chose us. Reverse Rett is a parent driven organisation working to speed treatments and cures for Rett Syndrome. This is a devastating neurological condition which affects previously healthy little girls and robs them of the ability to walk, speak and use their hands.
Dear Editor, I would like to share my idea for the lido which is, at present, a white elephant. The fire brigade could empty the pool and it could then be filled concrete to 18” from the top. Half of the space could be a paddling pool and the other half a sandpit. Revenue could

Dear Editor, I wanted to let you know that my family and I had a wonderful holiday in Grange Over Sands. We stayed in a cottage on the Meathop Caravan Club site. Friendly, helpful staff and a lovely cottage. Opening the curtains each morning and looking out across fields and out over Morecambe Bay, even if it was raining, was a good start to each day. We spent a couple of afternoons playing crazy golf and pitch and putt. The man in charge of the kiosk was welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We didn’t travel too far to explore; Bowness by launch from Lakeside, Lakeside Aquarium and a working farm - I can’t remember

Bruno Gouillon Chairman, Grange Fell Allotment Society Because my granddaughter Molly has Rett Syndrome we are so grateful to everyone who chose to support us..We raised a magnificent £1,865.38 which was rounded up to £2,000 by a kind friend. Also on Sunday Lindale Bowling Club also chose Rett Syndrome as their charity and raised £133.82 in a raffle. My family join me in thanking you all for your generosity. Every penny will go to Reverse Rett to fund research that will have a practical and positive effect on our children’s lives. Thank you for giving us hope that change is possible. Lis Christopher be made, firstly from charges: £25 per year, £5 for a week or £1 per day and secondly from retail units. I have to say that a personal highlight is being able to enjoy Thunder and Lightning ice cream! I don’t eat ice cream very often but when in the Lakes I make up for it - Just as well we were only staying a week! You have a beautiful small town, with friendly locals. The local community should be very proud of themselves. We saw some tending flower beds along the prom. I have a funny feeling that it won’t be long before we book again for next summer. Yours, thankful for relaxing holidays Fiona Reid

FREE LEGAL ADVICE Wednesday 2–4pm Home visits available
No surprises with fixed fees You wouldn’t do your weekly shop without knowing how much you were paying for the things you were buying, would you? Or book your holiday without knowing the cost until you were on the flight home? In the same way, when someone asks us to deal with the estate of someone who has died we tell them in advance and in writing what it will cost for us to deal with everything for them. Not all firms of solicitors take this approach (although an increasing number do) but a certain chain of nationwide undertakers make a point of telling their customers that they are the only people anywhere who will deal with an estate on a fixed price basis, which quite simply is wrong. A lot of people fall for it though, and end up, after they have been sweet-talked into signing up with the undertakers, having to deal with call centres many miles away. Not the best way of having to sort things out at an emotional and difficult time for the family. At Poole Townsend we have a team of experienced solicitors who are specially trained to deal with estates. We offer a free first appointment without obligation so that we can work out what needs to be done. Sometimes this can be nothing at all, but at least we tell you instead of signing you up to something that you don’t need. We can often reduce your stress and anxiety just by explaining the procedures in simple terms and pointing you in the right direction to sort things out yourself. We work from offices all around the Furness area so are never too far away and we will come to see you at home if you have difficulty getting to us. You will be dealing with one person who knows and understands your particular case, not just some random person at the end of a phone line – if you can ever get through to them, that is. We know and understand how difficult it can be dealing with call centres and having to start from scratch each time you get through to a person after selecting the options from a pre-recorded voice. After all, no one likes that, do they? As part of the process, we will also go through what the change in circumstances will mean for you in terms of your own planning. If you have inherited a large amount of money, you need to know what that means to you. Will it affect your tax status? Can you protect it (and your own assets) for the future? Can you give some of it away? Book your free appointment with us to speak to a member of our expert team.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP Cartmel and District Flower Club
The Club met on Monday 15th August and the meeting began with a minutes silence for three of our valued members, Hazel Allen, Sybil Law and Ann Ross who all recently passed away. We welcomed Wendy Graveston from Burnley with ‘seasons to be cheerful’. Wendy began with a very interesting display of twigs, lichen, bark all arranged on a tall glass vase, orange and yellow Gerbera were used with slices of orange to represent marmalade. An arrangement in old galvanised mop bucket in all white flowers: carnations lily singapore orchids a feather duster pan scrubs and a duster. Using a very large husk to represent a boat, Wendy used pink mitsumata sticks for height and aspidistra leaves woven with pink midelino carnations roses and lily. A stunning arrangement. Using a large white shell and exotic foliage ginger lily anthurium. Celebrating bonfire night large twigs bound in red and black wool red carnations gerbera anthuriums all to represent flames in a large cauldron. A stage filled with colour giving us lots of cheer. At the next meeting on 19th September in Cartmel Village Hall at 2pm, we will welcome John Dalton from Carlisle with ‘What a wonderful world’. Visitors and new members welcome.

Grange Garden Society
On Friday 19th August, Izzy and Nick Thorne treated members and visitors to a talk on Gardening for Wildlife. As members arrived they were invited to stick a star on the position of their house on a map of Grange, which at the end of the talk was used to demonstrate how gardens create a wildlife corridor through Grange. Izzy and Nick have converted their barren backyard into an oasis of plant life, which is literally food, drink and shelter to many insects, birds and elusive hedgehogs. Their efforts have spread to their neighbours’ gardens and to the lane at the back of the houses. We were given much food for thought with regard to our plantings’ suitability for wildlife and asked to consider what we could do to improve our efforts in future, perhaps even offering to help elderly neighbours with their plots. A thought provoking evening. On Friday 9th September members will visit Harlow Carr Gardens and on Friday 16th September, Andy Gilchrist will talk to us about ‘Apple Growing in Cumbria’, at 7.30 in the URC Hall. On 18th November Pat Murphy will reveal the joys of Meconopsis in the URCH at 2.00 pm.

Members worked hard to ensure that there was a varied selection of delicious food, to sell on the stall, at Cartmel Show on 3rd August. Sales were brisk and a welcome profit was made for funds. Entries in the craft marquee were up on last year with several exhibits winning prizes. Everyone was delighted with the results. The speaker at the meeting on Wednesday 14th September will be Howard Whittaker. His subject will be ‘Humorous Observations of an Auctioneer’. The meeting will take place at Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

Grange Probus Club
On the 8th August the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch gave a talk entitled ‘The

Past is a Foreign Country’. He began by saying that he had travelled to many foreign countries, including Yorkshire where he was the Bishop of Wakefield. He talked of the long standing historical disputes between York and Canterbury the last of which was not resolved until 2007. He then recounted his visits to several African countries particularly Zambia, punctuating his stories with many props from the country. It was here that he was invited to a presidential lunch which at the last moment had to be retimed because members of the Zambian cabinet wanted to watch the English Cup Final. Probus is a club for retired men and women of the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. The Club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. I will begin my report by saying a big `Thank you’ to all our friends at the hall. We have been anonymously gifted a dishwasher (not yet bought), and with the donations already given to upgrade the kitchen, we intend to have it rewired. We hope to have the leaking chimneys removed by wintertime. The committee have also decided to explore the possibility of a `LOOP’ system for the hard of hearing. Together with a PA system, this will no doubt help everybody. We hope to have all these alterations up and running by spring 2017. All rooms are available for hire. The most recent event was an Invitation Day, with 16 couples taking part, and supporting our chosen charity for this year, Rett Syndrome. Our green will close for the winter at the end of September, but do contact us if you would like to take up bowling at any time, on 015395 34750.
