Christmas really gets going with the ‘Christmas comes to Grange’ celebrations on Saturday 2nd December. There will be festive stalls and treats in the library car park as well as the Victoria Hall, St Paul’s Church in Grange and the URC on Kents Bank Road. During the day shops and businesses will be getting involved with mulled wine and festive nibbles. Make sure you’re at Yewbarrow Terrace for 6pm for Carols with Flookburgh Band. The big Christmas lights switch on starts at 6.30pm with Grange Christmas tree, with actress Molly McGlynn doing the honours. Following that there will

be a visit from Santa who will then lead the parade up Main Street switching on the cross street lights as he goes before doing the same on Kent’s Bank Road. It’s then back down to Victoria Hall for carols, mulled wine and more festive fun. Nothing says Christmas quite like a visit to the panto. Grange Youth Amatuer Operatic will be performing Dick Whittington and his Cat between 8th - 10th December. See Arts pages for full details. held at The Pheasant Inn. St Peter’s Church, Field Broughton are organising Carol Singing around the parish on Tuesday 12th December. Organisers say; meet at 6:15 pm at Barber Green noticeboard and finish at High Newton Village Hall at about 8:15pm and then on Friday 15th December:met at 6pm at Field Broughton Parish Rooms and finish back there at about 8pm. On page 4 you will find details of all the church services over the Christmas period and on Christmas Day Flookburgh Band play all your favourite carols on Flookburgh Square, starting at 11.30am - not to be missed.
Have you been to Jeremy’s yet? A question you hear a lot around these parts during December is “Have you been to Jeremy’s yet?” We are, of course, talking about local vet, Jeremy Voakes and his Christmas lights at Trevenna.
Jeremy, Mandy and their children have been decorating their home for the last fifteen years and in the process have raised over £11,000 for the NSPCC. Jeremy told Grange Now, “We did mention having a year off this year but having smashed the previous year’s total raised we just had to do them again, and are busy putting up even more!” But getting all these lights in place is a mammoth task. Jeremy added: “Last year it took us 26 full days to get all the lights up, we started getting the garden ready in the middle of October, hopefully we will have everything ready for the big switch on on the 1st December. We’ve been switching the lights over the last few years to LED’s which are easier to run and and my wife Mandy is an invaluable help holding ladders, untangling wires and snipping cable ties.” On a sad note however, Jeremy says the lights are now taking up a significant part of the year (October to Easter all told) so this might be the last year for a while so don’t miss out on this opportunity to see them.

The Reverse Advent Calendar Advent, the countdown to Christmas, is often marked by opening an advent calendar window every day to reveal a picture or a chocolate treat. This year, the Reverse Advent Calendar has been introduced to turn that idea on its head. Designed to give, not take.
First, fire up that festive feeling, and decorate a box. Destination? - the Foodbank. From 1st December place one item in the box every day. Basic foods are always needed, but people who rely on the food bank also appreciate donations of toiletries, cleaning products, baby items and pet food. And remember, it’s Christmas, so festive food like puddings, cakes biscuits, sweets, chocolates and chutneys would be greatly appreciated. The full shopping list of what is needed contains easy to find items that won’t break the bank of those people not counting on the food bank this Christmas. The food bank will happily take supermarket own value brand
Don’t forget the next Foodbank Collection - Sunday 3rd December at the Father Magner Rooms, St Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, between 1-3pm.
Grange Christmas Tree Festival items. It is possible to spend less than £1 on each item, so your parcel should cost no more than £24 but will be a priceless gift for a family or individual in need. Being in crisis at Christmas is not a place where anyone would choose to be. So if you can help, the food bank will offer you a very warm winter welcome. What should you do with your box? St Paul’s in Grange have very generously offered to be a collection point or you can have a look at the Foodbank’s website for full details of the shopping list, drop-off points and opening times: www.barrow.foodbank. org.uk . If you can’t fill a box, any item you can afford to give would also be gratefully received. Why not pop in an extra selection box or two next time you go shopping?
Don’t forget the Christmas Tree Festival Reception, at St Paul’s in Grange, on Friday 8th at 7pm when the festival will be opened by local MP Tim Farron. Entertainment will be provided by the Bay Community Singers and a joint choir of children from Grange and Lindale Primary Schools and everyone can enjoy welcoming in the Christmas season with a carol or two, drinks and seasonal ‘nibbles’. This is always a really enjoyable evening and enjoyed by all who attend.
After the Reception, the Christmas Tree Festival is open 10am - 4pm throughout December until January 1st (closed Christmas and Boxing Day). The theme of the festival is ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Entry is free (donations to charity) and it is interesting to see how different organisations interpret this song!
There’s still time if you need ‘Friends at Christmas’
Plans are now well advanced for the Friends at Christmas lunch to be held on Christmas Day. Many businesses in the area have already been very generous with their donations and pledges of support. Friends at Christmas offer a traditional Christmas meal, traditional entertainment and companionship for anyone in the area on their own this Christmas. If you would like further information please contact Liz Benson on 33291.

Carpets are the filters for our homes They trap the dust and other airborne allergens that would otherwise be floating around in the air we breathe.
Whilst regular vacuuming of our carpets removes most of these allergens from the surface, over time, some of this stuff gets deep rooted within the pile of the carpet and only a professional deep clean will get rid of it.
For a cleaner and healthier home, make it a point to regularly have your carpets and rugs deep cleaned. While it’s a chore to do it yourself, deep cleaning of your carpets is something that should never be neglected.
For best results, you can always seek help from a professional carpet cleaning company like Revive Carpet Cleaning. We make thorough carpet cleaning fast and easy at very reasonable prices. Carpets are usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning and we move your furniture too.
We also clean upholstery, including leather.
The photos show an example of what we can achieve, the first one was taken part way through the clean to show the difference as the job progressed, the second, the final result. We hope you agree that there is an amazing improvement.

Well here we are, almost at the end of what has felt like a particularly soggy year. I’ve been lucky enough to escape the dampness and get away to visit friends in southern Spain for a few days last month, but in-between glasses of Rioja and plates of tapas, I noticed what looked like a large number of allotments at the edge of town.
Brown Robin
The Waxcap grassland has fared a little better this season, however work on the grazing is still in progress to get it just right and we are confident we can do that. The first Redwing arrived on the reserve on the 5th of October, but on the 24th I was greeted with a flock of over 1,000 just as it was getting light. There also seems to be an eruption of Hawfinch entering the UK as well as Waxwing too, suggesting bad weather or lack of food has forced them to migrate early. I haven’t seen any locally yet but there are one or two reports in
Apparently due to the way inheritance works in Spain many farms and larger plots are broken down to be shared amongst various relatives which seem to end up only slightly larger than your typical UK allotment but contain Pomegranate, Orange, Almond and Olive trees absolutely groaning with produce, the stuff of a mad man’s dream.
These plots on the whole are much lower maintenance but with one major problem, the lack of water. Water is collected in artificial lakes on the tops of hills and mountains and runs down ancient carefully constructed channels, zig-zagging down steep hillsides, along ridges and through tunnels eventually running down into a kind of small canal system that runs amongst the plots. It’s from this canal system that the plot holders draw water, each plot has a little gate that they raise at
a pre-established (by a special water committee) time, once a week, for a set number of minutes no more no less. Then on each plot of land the owner will have dug out their own little series of channels and the water floods in around these and is delivered to the base of an Olive tree or a row of cabbages wherever it is needed. It’s great fun. So really, we’re fortunate to get our water, route one style, straight down from the sky into the floor, never mind this ancient super-cute system of teeny weeny canals. Anyway back to reality and this month you can get on with pruning apples, pears and blackcurrants. It’s also a good time to plant any bare rooted fruit trees or bushes. It might have been wet but that also means it’s been mild so you’ll still be harvesting Brassicas and salads like rocket or Mizuna.
the area. Waxwing can usually be seen in supermarket car parks as they like to feed on Rowan berries.
We had a visit from a lovely group of visually impaired youngsters from Castlehead Field Studies Centre to help out with some vital conservation work and despite the bad weather did an amazing job and we hope they visit us again in the New year. To look out for: the prom is always worth a visit for Twite or Linnet and anything after a storm. Winter thrushes such as Redwing, Fieldfare and Mistle thrush and there are plenty of Sparrowhawk on the prowl as
well as the occasional Peregrine. The grey wagtail can be seen about town if you look. They sound drab, but they are quite colourful with a pale yellow breast and underparts. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Hon. Reserve Manager, Tony Saunders.

The weather was mainly fine with just the slightest amount of misty drizzle for just 5 minutes so. Although the walk had 1440 feet of ascent, the gradients were all gentle, so the impressive views of the Fells were gained for relatively little effort. The added bonus was that the rain kept off until we were safely ensconced in one of the pub in Broughton-inFurness for light refreshments before the journey home. A very satisfying and rewarding ramble.
Reference should be made to OS Map OL6
4. Turn left over the bridge and then immediately right to follow the tarmac track along the river side to High Wallow Farm.
5. Pass through the farmyard and slightly right through a gate at the end of the buildings. Go through a field to another gate leading into woodland. Follow a clear path to an attractive arched bridge. Cross the bridge and turn immediately right through a small gate. Follow the path beside the river and over another bridge to the road. Turn left onto the road and pass the Newfield Inn at Seathwaite. 6. Turn right through a gate at a bridleway sign, through some sheep pens and take the path to the right keeping the wall on the right and head uphill on the Park Head Road. At the highest point of the walk Caw Fell is on the left.

Seven Ramblers took part in this walk from the picturesque valley at Ulpha Bridge to Seathwaite.

Soroptimists win prestigious award Ten members of Soroptimist International of Grange over Sands travelled to Cardiff recently to attend the annual conference of the SI Great Britain & Ireland Federation. They joined over twelve hundred Soroptimists from clubs all over the UK, Northern Ireland, Eire and from clubs in the Caribbean, Africa and the Indian sub continent. On the final day Grange Soroptimists were thrilled to receive a prestigious Best Practice Award for their ‘Singing for Memory’ project. Singing for Memory was started by SI Grange over Sands four years ago to help
local people living at home with Alzheimer’s and other memory inhibiting conditions. This is the second accolade SI Grange has received for this project. The sessions are popular and invigorating weekly events for sufferers and carers. Singing of popular songs, tongue twisters and rhymes and playing percussion instruments are enjoyed along with other fun memory-enhancing games, not forgetting friendly social interaction over tea or coffee (and of course chocolate biscuits!) Members of Grange club volunteer their help on a rota basis. A modest

FOOD & DRINK
It’s beginning to look a lot like…
Roast partridge with sage, thyme & cider
Cumbrian cider is one of the latest specialities to be added to the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop shelves. It’s made in Wigton using locally picked apples and is the perfect partner for partridge from Cartmel Valley Game, which is sourced from local shoots. Both ingredients bring vibrant flavour to the seasonal table and we’ve found a lovely recipe that combines them to make a fine supper for two.
INGREDIENTS
Serves 2
2 oven-ready Cartmel Valley Game partridges 1 bunch sage 1 bunch thyme sprigs 1 garlic bulb, halved around its circumference 1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil
2 large knobs Winter Tarn butter 100ml Cumbrian Cider 150ml double cream 1 teaspoon dijon mustard salt &freshly ground black pepper
METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 200°C. Place the partridges and herbs in a small roasting tray. Add the garlic and season well. Drizzle with olive oil and place a knob of butter on top of each bird. Roast for 20–25 minutes, until their skin is golden brown. 2. Remove the birds to a clean plate, turn them upside down and leave them to rest somewhere warm. Place the roasting tray over a medium heat, add the cider and bring to the boil. Add the cream and mustard. Bring the sauce back to the boil, then simmer gently for about 5 minutes, until nicely reduced. Season. Return the birds to the roasting tray along with any juices left on the plate.
Christmas is nearly here! Decorations now adorn the streets and gift displays glitter from every shop window. Mince pies tempt us from the end of strategically placed shop aisles and boxes of wrapped chocolates call from office desks. It’s fair to say that for many of us, the festive season is eagerly awaited for (amongst other things) the temptations of treats and sweets that it beholds, but most of all for the anticipation of that special and wonderful Christmas meal. This will be our 34th year of providing our customers with everything they need to create spectacular feasts throughout the festive season. Whether you’re a Turkey tradionalist or a multibird roast modernist, we have something to suit every appetite! And it’s not just about the star of the Christmas Day table, we have thought of everything! From our Festive Cheeseboards at just £15 (a selection of local cheeses & a jar of chutney presented on lovely bamboo chopping boards), to our Higginsons Gift Vouchers that answer the question of what to buy that one awkward member of the family! We’ve even taken the hassle out of cooking on Christmas Eve with a Festive Pie & Pies; £20 each they include our homemade steak and vegetable pie, peas and home-made gravy for 8 people. Now it’s just a case of choosing! It’s simple to order too… either call us, visit our shop or place your order at the click of a button via our website. If you’re unsure of what to order or what quantities and you would like some advice beforehand, don’t be afraid to call in and discuss your requirements with our helpful staff. We also have FREE Cooking and Recipe Leaflets for you to take away! Our Opening times and Christmas Cooking Guides are available on our website! We hope to see you all very soon, and would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year! Best Wishes The Team at Higginsons
3. Bring to the table in the tray, then place one bird on each plate and spoon over plenty of sagey, cidery sauce. Serve with buttery mash. 4. Low Sizergh Barn regularly stock partridge but please do ring ahead to reserve (015395 60426). Recipe adapted from Gill Mellor’s cookbook Gather, which you can find in our shippon.

Club is firmly establishing itself within the running community The ‘Allithwaite 8’ trail race, organised by Allithwaite Running Club, took place under cloudless skies on Saturday 4th November. Almost 80 runners took on trail, field, fell and limestone pavement as they climbed Hampsfell in the race which saw 78 competitors battling it out for prizes made locally, including chocolate from Choco-Lori in Grange and beer from Flookburgh’s Fell Brewery, Unsworth’s of Cartmel and Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding. Many thanks to all
our local businesses – you certainly made a memorable mark on our visitors! A strong turnout from Black Combe Runners, as part of their championship races, gave some stiff competition with Josh Hartley in first place with a time of 52:36 to hold off last year’s winner and teammate Harvey Lord who took 2nd place with 53:39. Will Sisson took 3rd men’s place for Kendal AC, in a ‘photo finish’ with Steven Brennan, with a time of 56:04. Setting a scorching pace for
Jordan’s golf is well under par
the ladies was Black Combe’s Lizzie Browne in 3rd place overall and a time of 54:41. Emily Simpson took 2nd ladies in 1:04:55, with Darina Delinova (Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers) in 3rd in 1:09:00. Support by marshals from the club and the village was wellreceived by all the runners. In addition, the club wishes to thank Steve Gelderd, Holker Estates, Longlands Halland the farmers at Low Bank Side, Aynsome Croft, Longlands, Aynsome and High Fell Gate farms.
Flookburgh lad, Jordan Harrison, pretty much wiped the board clean at Grange over Sands Golf Club’s recent Presentation Evening. Aged just 24, Jordan, whose handicap is just 0.5 won the Club Championship Trophy. This consists of playing two rounds (36 holes) in one day and, for the first time in the club’s history, Jordan shot two under par rounds. The talented young man has managed to win eight trophies at the Club this year. He’s not the only winning golfer in the family though as brother Craig also won two trophies and, not be outdone, so did Dad, Ian!
Charities win big thanks to local horse show The 22nd Witherslack Horse Show was held at Cartmel Racecourse at the end of September. The sun shone for the 320 competitors who turned out on the day. Supreme Ridden champion went to Holly Dilks riding Kilattle Georgie Porgie and Supreme In hand Champion was Glynis Cockbain with Carrock Elsa.
As a result of generous sponsorship £750 was sent to each of our chosen charities North West Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer Care Unit at Lancaster Hospital while a raffle held on the day raised £212 for Dean Barwick School at Witherslack. The committee would like to thank all our sponsors and everyone who helped.

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS
The 2nd November saw Bank of England base rate rise from 0.25% to 0.5%. It was 5th March 2009 when base rate fell to that level and fell even further to 0.25% in August 2016. It is the first increase since July 2007 over 10 years ago. Whilst on the upside for savers any rate rise is welcome we need to remember that rates are still pitifully low with most savings accounts offering below inflation returns. The expectation is for rates to rise gradually and by low
margins over the next 24 months. Borrowers will be less happy with mortgage payments facing their first increase in over a decade. Less obvious will be the impact on areas such as annuity rates and bond prices. 22nd November sees Chancellor Hammond’s first autumn budget, something we will assess next month. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. face on, a precursor of the smiles from the children of Eastern Europe when they opened their boxes. After being blessed in Sunday morning, the boxes will be taken to the International Aid depot in Preston.
A group of ladies and a few men, gathered at Grange o Sands Methodist Church, to pack the 240 plus shoe boxes which had previously been covered with Christmas paper. Tables were laid out round the room, with a selection of all kinds of goodies.
Sunday 12th November - On Remembrance Sunday, the joint service for the URC and Methodist people was held at the URC church. Rev Jo Rand was the preacher and a time for reflection was held, during the two minute silence. This was preceded by a bugler playing ‘The Last post’ and the time ended when he played ‘Reveille’. The famous words of the poet, Laurence Binyan were read as the time of remembrance closed. Ray Booth was the organist.
Organiser, Eileen, outlined the procedure and the work began. There was a lovely atmosphere, most were thinking about the children who would receive the gifts, perhaps the first they ever received. At the interval, we had tea and biscuits that had a smiley

The Festival will then be open daily from Saturday 9th December until 2nd January, apart from Christmas Day. Proceeds from the festival will be split between St Paul’s, the Fell Church, USPG and the Food Bank. Our Christmas services begin with our Carol Service on the 17th December at 4.00pm. On Christmas Eve there will be Eucharist at 11.00 am followed by the Christingle Service at 6.30 pm and Midnight Eucharist of the Nativity at 11.30pm. The Christmas Morning Eucharist is at 10.00am. On the 31st December we will join the congregation at Flookborough for Eucharist at 10.00am. The final lunchtime concert, on the 1st November was very successful with almost 100 people attending. A 24 strong choir, directed by Charles Edmondson, presented a programme representing all the festivals of the church year. As always, the catering team provided excellent fare.
United Reformed Church The wonderful festival of Christmas is nearly with us. Our congregation is looking forward to celebrating with our Methodist friends in their Church. Full details of all services can be found on page 4 of this paper.
This month we are sorry to be saying goodbye to our good friend, Revd Carole Marsden, who is moving to Shrewsbury to serve in a Church there. She will be much missed in the South Lakes Group, and there will be a special service and tea at Kendal URC on Dec 3rd at 3pm for us to say our farewells . On Saturday, Dec 2nd our Christmas Coffee Morning takes place in the Church Hall from 10am-noon. Everyone is welcome.
St Mary’s, Allithwaite It’s been a busy autumn with a number of events taking place in addition to the normal Sunday services. A family walk and picnic at Cartmel Fell in September was followed a couple of weeks later by another picnic on the shore of Coniston where we gathered for an outdoor baptism in the lake and the same evening welcomed Bishop James when we hosted a Team confirmation service in church. During September we also hosted a Ladies’ teaching day which was much appreciated by the many ladies who took part. The month ended with a daffodil planting morning and we look forward to the results in the Spring! For our Harvest Festival in October the windows were once again beautifully decorated by several local groups, and the auction of harvest produce raised funds
for the work of Children of Hope in Uganda. At the end of the month we hosted a ‘Big Breakfast’ in church in aid of MacMillan before a joint AllAge service with our friends from Flookburgh, and the following day a good number of children and parents enjoyed another Messy Church on the theme of ‘Light’. In November, a Curry Night proved very popular and as well as the delicious choice of curries and desserts on offer we were entertained by some “Travellers’ Tales” from two of our members who had recently visited Japan and Croatia respectively. We also enjoyed a Jacob’s Join lunch to celebrate a “special” birthday of one of our members. Our Christmas celebrations begin on 13th December with our traditional “Big Sing” with the Flookburgh Band at The Pheasant in Allithwaite from 6.30 pm. Please come along.

Artist of the month Rosco Low
“You don’t realise how lucky you are at the time. That was, however, knocked into me fairly comprehensively through thirteen years of teaching young people in Lancaster for whom life was no bed of roses.” Bernard lives locally with his wife, Janette and their two daughters and he describes his life as being, “scandalously happy.” He goes on to say, “we’re also very lucky to have Grandparents on hand in Grange and Windermere and young cousins for our girls to meet up with in Kendal, Keswick and Grange.” How did Liquidity come about?
Liquidity
by Rosco Low ISBN-13: 978-1787103139 Rosco Low is the pen name for Bernard Marshall and Grange Now had the pleasure of interviewing him about his debut novel, Liquidity.
My school was closed down two years ago. It was the kick in the pants I needed to do something intrepid. As the author blurb rather wittily puts it “An early passion for writing was savagely thwarted for twenty-five years by ill fortune, economic strife and a woeful lack of ambition. Instead, the author embarked on a torrid quest through the world’s noble trades in an effort to find the one to which he was least suited. He found it in teaching. He’s over it now and rehabilitating in the Lake District.”
A bit of background
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Born at Helme Chase, Bernard grew up in Ambleside, Windermere and the Lyth Valley but as he himself says,
The book’s autobiographical… apart from the MI5 agents, assorted gangsters and glamourous women!
Loved it. A brilliant fast-paced, actioned packed book that has everything: suspense, murder, drama, romance, likeable heros and an ending that just leaves you wanting more.
This is a simply outstanding debut novel by a very talented author - great plot, superb characters - Serbian hitmen, betrayal, MI5 and some clever twists
Absolutely fantastic read, when can we expect more????
I suppose I saw a gap in the market for a ripping yarn and wrote the best one I could. Where is your preferred writing space? Do you prefer peace and quiet for writing or noisy cafes or do you have a soundtrack? I have a comfy sofa with an overly diverting view of the garden. My mind is befuddled enough without music to confound it further. Strumming a guitar can sometimes prove productive though. So, what’s ‘Liquidity’ about? At its heart, it’s a whydunnit mystery. Why has a beautiful young woman been killed? Why has she ended up in a completely innocent man’s bed? Why does he find himself set
Cartmel Choral Society
Cartmel Choral Society`s Christmas concert will take place in the Priory at 7.30 pm on Saturday 9th December. The programme includes Hymn of Praise by Felix Mendelssohn and excerpts from J S Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, plus carols for all. This year the concert features soloists Deborah Milledge (mezzo soprano) and Simon

upon by faceless fiends? Why does his nemesis ultimately hold the key to his salvation? Themes that will be fairly familiar for most thriller readers, but I’m hoping they’ll also be wondering: It’s a thriller, how come I’m laughing so much? Is crime your preferred genre? Not really. Like anyone, I love a book that opens your eyes to something or takes you on a fantastical ride in your mind. Thrillers tend to achieve that more than most genres, but sometimes, you escape into a world equally or more terrifying than the one in which we already live. I wanted to write a book that was more of an adventure with thrills and danger, certainly, but also humour and humanity.
Grange Drama Grapevine As the Festive Season approaches members of Grange Drama are putting their ‘dramatic’ feet up until after Twelfth night. We would like to thank everyone who has supported our 2017 productions and other special events. Congratulations to the winners of the First Past the Post theatrical quiz and the £144 raised from sales has been split between the two charities, NW Air Ambulance and Grange & District First Responders. Grange audiences were truly treated to “tour de force” performances in the two comedies, Green Forms and The Allergic Audience, staged in October. Congratulations and a big thank you to Deborah Powell, actor / director, along with her two casts, for keeping
those of us out front so well entertained. To round off our 70th anniversary we turned to politics and looked back to the “never had it so good” years of the 1960’s. Hugh Whitemore’s play A Letter of Resignation, a drama documentary style script, portrays the public and private life of Harold Macmillan at the time of the Jack Profumo affair. To our surprise someone turned up with an original programme of the 1997 West End production and had seen Edward Fox cast in the Prime Ministerial role. In the New Year we open with a Play Reading in Grange Institute where members and friends meet once a month for a chat over coffee, read selected plays, plan workshops and rehearse for our annual productions at Victoria Hall productions.

Grange Panto: Dick Whittington and his cat Producers and Directors, Jean and Mick Malkin have been hard at work since September to delight audiences with their annual pantomime. They have sent this preview of the not to be missed show. Have we got a treat for you? Oh yes we have. On the weekend of 8th, 9th and 10th December, the youth of Grange & District Amateur Operatic Society will perform this exciting panto for your pleasure at the Victoria Hall in Grange.
Faye Hill takes on the role of Dick Whittington and her cat, Emily Kate Unsworth this show is sure to be a hit with this talented duo singing and dancing.

Comedy comes in with a bang with Jack, Reece Carter and his stage mother Dolly Dumpling played by the irrepressible Amy Shepherd. Her equally talented brother Tom Shepherd plays the Captain and newcomer Alice Payne as his sidekick Scupper will have you rolling in the aisles. Izzie Shires as the elegant and domineering Sultana of Morocco completes this wonderful cast. For the first time in a few years some beautiful dancers; Katie, Emily, Rebecca, Nerissa, Alice and

A wonderful visit to our Partner School. During half term, with the aid of British Council funding, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Whinfield travelled to Nepal to visit our partner school in the remote village of Sikles, high up in the Annapurna Himalayan Mountain Range. After many hours and days travelling, the teachers finally arrived to a lovely, warm welcome by the children and staff from the Primary and Secondary School. Mrs Whinfield had the opportunity to visit Sikles 4 years ago and Mrs Johnson 2 years ago, but both were able to see the massive changes and improvements
to the school through the support of our school as well as other organisations. The children of Sikles welcomed the teachers by wearing their traditional Gurung costumes and dancing traditional dances. KS also visited and ‘talked’ to the children about how we use the KidSafe rules to stay safe. On their return to Kathmandu, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Whinfield were able to take part in staff training for EYFS teachers, provided by Global Action Nepal (GAN) and assist their curriculum and teaching development. The trip has only strengthened our partnership with Sikles which we hope will continue many years into the future.
Lindale School and Pre-School Nursery
Over the past few weeks our children have been thinking about others less fortunate than themselves. Many of them have been making shoe boxes full of lovely gifts to be sent to children in Eastern Europe by the Boxes of Hope charity. We collected 27 boxes, which is a huge total for our small school. The children also organised their own events in aid of Children in Need. This included a ‘mufti day’; dressing up in spots or Pudsey costumes. Our Year 6 leaders also organised their own cake stall, selling cakes contributed by the whole school. In total over £100 was raised for Children In Need. We are now busy rehearsing for
our Pantomime; ‘Pantastic’, a version of the classic story Peter Pan. We will be performing it at Lindale Village Hall on the afternoons of Tuesday 5th December and Thursday 7th December. Tickets will be available on the door for these performances and all are welcome. Lindale Pre-school Nursery are also getting ready for the festive season with Christmas stories and crafts. They will be holding their Christmas performance for parents and the children at Lindale School. They are also looking forward to welcoming new children over the next few weeks.
SCHOOL REPORT
Flookburgh Primary
All of our children throughout school spent the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Day preparing for our special pupilled Remembrance Service. We prepared poppy crafts, artworks, poetry, pieces of descriptive writing and prayers all inspired by the sacrifices of those brave enough to defend those in need. We shared all of our hard work
Acorn Montessori Busy, best describes the children at Acorn Montessori. They have been finishing their topic on colours and been learning lots of new songs. The song about a pumpkin, which focussed on. The shapes of his features was a particular favourite. After Halloween the children cut up their pumpkin and helped to make it into delicious soup which they all enjoyed. The children are now they are learning new songs in preparation for a Nativity Play, “The Sleepy Shepherd” which will be performed
Grange Preschool Welcome to all our new little ones who have come to join in messy play for the first time. We are excited to be entering the First Lego League this year, with a team of ten Class 4 children currently very busy learning how to program their Lego robot to complete a variety of water themed challenges. We will competing against a number of other South Cumbria schools in December; we can’t wait to put all of our Lego innovations to the test! Recently, many of our Key Stage 2 children took part in the interschool cross country event at Cartmel. Everyone had a great time, despite the drizzle and the mud, and we came back to school proud of our achievements! at two local care homes, for the pupils at Cartmel Primary and of course for their families.
A variety of creative activities have been very popular, they made firework pictures using a paint spinner, ‘conker paintings’, lanterns and are now beginning various decorations which will be hung on their Christmas Tree in December. The progress on the outdoor classroom has caused great excitement. With a Christmas Party, Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children and lots of Christmas activities, the end of term is going to be a fun time for all. excuse to use all our shiny and bright resources for art and craft techniques. We have made cakes and clay lamps, designed our own Christmas cards and will soon be making gifts and getting ready for a party. Look out for us fundraising at The Extravaganza on 2nd December or following Santa’s musical sleigh on the evening of Tuesday 5th December.
It has been another fun and busy month at Cartmel CE Primary School, with plenty of activity beyond our classrooms.
We played an enthusiastic part in a cross-country competition with other local schools, and older children were inspired by other kinds of outdoor adventures on a trip to the Kendal Mountain Festival.
Thinking of others has been another theme of November at school. Our children have willingly contributed to the Boxes of Hope appeal, and have raised money for two more causes via a Children in Need cake stall and Remembrance Sunday poppy sales.
December will be another packed month for the school as we look forward to Christmas—and the fun has already started with a Christmas Fair in Cartmel Village Hall in late November. The whole school will soon take a trip to the pantomime in Lancaster before we put on a performance of our own with a Nativity in Cartmel Priory on Tuesday 12th December at 6pm — all welcome! We will also be taking part in the Priory’s ‘Light Up a Life’ service on Sunday 10th December, and fitting in a Christingle service, Christmas lunch and Christmas jumper day before the end of term.

After all the footwork on day one, the group were ready for a boat trip down the Rhine, from Boppard to Rüdesheim, ending up at the (Rüdesheim) Museum with the most amazing array of mechanical musical instruments and then the Niederwald Monument. An evening round of mini-golf brought out the competitive instinct in the pupils before another delicious, traditional meal back at the hotel. All pupils were extremely interested in experiencing the language, culture and scenery of Germany and some are already looking forward to the next language trip scheduled in 2019!

Mid-October, 44 pupils and 4 teachers from Cartmel Priory School set forth on a journey from Cartmel to Boppard, on the banks of the River Rhine. Food, films and snoozes broke up the journey! The first day was spent admiring the beauty of Cologne Cathedral, before burning off the calories by going up the Bell Tower to look at the stunning views (the step counting was made much easier by the advent of sports watches). Pupils were then able to recover from their efforts by walking around the Lindt Museum,
with the wider community, and we were glad to be joined by members of Bridge House. The children’s efforts highlighted their deepening understanding of our current Christian value, Respect.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP Grange over Sands RNLI
The Grange over Sands RNLI Branch held its annual Coffee Morning on 11 November at the Methodist Church Hall. As well as RNLI Christmas cards and gifts, there were stalls offering bric-a-brac, books, a range of home produce, tombola and a raffle. The event was well attended and I am pleased to report that it raised £820. I should like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time to prepare for the event and to all those involved on the stalls, and serving the coffee, tea and biscuits. Most of all may I thank all the people who attended and by their purchases once again made this event a success. The main raffle prize winners were: Hamper - Judith Parrington; Christmas Cake - Irene Ross; Photographic Book of the Lake District - Jean McDonald; Box of Celebrations chocolates - David Lamb.
I do hope that we’ll see you at the RNLI stall at the Christmas Fair on 2 December at the Victoria Hall. And remember, we still need new volunteers to replace members leaving the Branch. Perhaps you watched the BBC2 series “Saving Lives At Sea” and felt inspired by it. Please, do think about joining us. Christine Blakemore, Branch Chairman. Grange Garden Society
October is the first of our Winter afternoon meetings which start at 2pm. The topic chosen was very apt for the coming season being entitled Plants for a Cold Garden. Ron Davies knows all about these conditions as he was formerly Head Gardener at Winderwath Garden in the North of the County, where temperatures can be well below freezing in the winter months. Armed with a long list of plant names members were treated to photographs which illustrated beautiful plants which have survived in the gardens Ron has tended. As he has a special interest in rare and unusual plants there was plenty to interest even the most experienced and to encourage others to experiment with new varieties. It was a fascinating afternoon. The November meeting is the AGM which will be followed by a sociable Jacob’s Join and a Quiz. On Friday 8th December members will be attending a Christmas Lunch. January 19th will be the first talk of the Year and members old and new will be welcome to attend at the URC Hall Kents Bank Road. St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group

On 8 November the Society held an open meeting on the topic of planning and development. The meeting was addressed by Cllr Eric Morrell (SLDC), Cllr Joanna Greenway (GTC), Mark Loughran (SLDC Planning department) and Val Kennedy (a local campaigner).
A description of the planning process was followed by spirited and informed discussions on a number of topics including proposed developments in Grange and Kents Bank, the continuing need for affordable housing and the way in which developers use a viability criterion imposed by central government to reduce commitments to affordable housing even after planning permission is granted. (The viability criterion allows developers to make 18% profit come what may.) Mrs Kennedy described the experience of volunteers who challenge developments which may meet national policy but fail to take into account local conditions. Cllr Greenway described the purpose and benefits of the Grange neighbourhood plan which is nearing formal acceptance.
Following the success of the evening the Society is considering topics for future meetings. Further details about the Civic Society may be found via its website at www.g-o-s-civic-society.btck.co.uk/ or its Facebook page. Grange Probus Club
On Monday 13 November 2017 a mixed audience of Grange Probus members were entertained to an informative talk by Graham Davies on Tidal Energy with particular Reference to Morecambe Bay and the Dudden Estuary. Graham gave a brief introduction to the patchy history of tidal energy and advised members that the threat of Global Warming had made an even stronger case now than ever before for this clean renewable energy source. The particular plan for Morecambe Bay proposed a Tidal Gateway between Heysham and Bardsea that could harness the billion cubic metres of water that flowed into and out of the Bay 4 times a day. (Two tides, in and out). Among the significant advantages of

this form of energy were its predictability and reliability and the fact that it could create thousands of jobs, improve connectivity, aid flood and storm surge control and reduce carbon emissions through reduced journey time and distance. A straw poll of those attending showed a significant majority in favour of such schemes PROBUS is a club for retired men and women of the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. The Club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. On 24th October Dr Robert McManners, who has collected over 400 drawings and paintings by local miners in the North East, talked enthusiastically to the Society about ‘Mining Art’. He presented photographs of the artwork, featuring pitheads, miners working underground and life in mining communities, and pointed to its emotional content and evident quality. A gallery showcasing the collection opened recently in Bishop Auckland. On 7th November John Pilkington reported on his latest travels in a lecture entitled ‘Russia and Europe: What Next?’ His journey, which included sombre visits to Auschwitz and Chernobyl, took him from Poland into, among other countries, Ukraine, travelling to the edge of its eastern conflict zones; and from Georgia into little known Caucasian republics on either side of the Russian border, some of them violently fought over following the Soviet Union’s break-up. He spoke engagingly of the peoples and cultures he encountered, with some geopolitics thrown in, and, as ever, accompanied his story with stunning photographs. He could make no predictions about such an unstable part of the world. On 5th December Antiques Roadshow expert Paul Atterbury will talk about ‘Exploring Britain’s Lost Railways’. His lecture begins at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall. Grange over Sands Golf Club
The ladies held their annual coffee morning at the beginning of November which was open to members and visitors with lots of interesting stalls and we would like to thank all the people that attended and helped to make it a success raising funds for the golf club. The sun shone on the second ‘Allithwaite 8’ trail race, organised by the club on Saturday 4th November. See full report in main paper.
The event comes after a successful summer of running, including Steve Wilson’s ‘3 in 3’ half-marathons in September; elsewhere John Douglas achieved his long-term goal of a sub-four hour marathon at Coniston in June on a very hilly off-road course, and Tina Jackson completed the Lakeland 50 in July in a great time. Steve was also accompanied by Paul and Julia on the 50 mile epic ultra- run ‘Lakes in a Day’ at the start of October in very testing conditions. Also doing exceptionally well are Sally and Gill who joined us in the spring and ran the Allithwaite half marathon and the Cumbrian run in October. Great running ladies, and proof of our encouragement in achieving your goals! We continue to welcome new members who enjoy running the trails and roads around the peninsular. We meet at Allithwaite Community Centre at 6.30, Mondays and Thursdays, but please check the Facebook and Website calendar for the occasional foray further afield. We tend to run around 5-6 miles and at a pace to suit everyone. Witherslack WI

What sadness was conveyed in our talk by David Maidment on the subject of the Railway Children Charity! Yet the hope given to thousands of children worldwide who live and beg for survival around stations was a wonderful counterbalance to this sadness.
Mike Fossey gave a fascinating talk, marrying Parisian history of circa 1871, the Revolutionary Communes then existing, with the French Impressionists, who reflected much of the City’s destruction by the invading Prussian armies. Mr Fossey’s talk, though, centred on the dark side of French ballet and the young women who were exploited in this form of entertainment. David Alison told the story of the SettleCarlisle Railway, of its 21 viaducts and the huge loss of many workers’ lives before completion in the 1840s. In 1980 the line’s closure was threatened but the then Minister of Transport, Michael Portillo, saved it, and since then its importance to many small communities has been realised. Right Reverend Nigel McCullough invited us to join him on Sovereign Service, taking us on a revealing and humorous journey. He served for 15 years in the House of Lords where he painted a word picture of crossbench interplay which had us chuckling.
Our meetings take place at Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank on Tuesdays at 10.15 am unless otherwise stated. Interested in joining us? Phone Paul Ramsden on 015395 36547. Flookburgh Village Hall

Membership is more than 140 and growing, together with offers of help and donations. The Group’s first few months have involved trial fundraising events, all well supported by the community. These will help VHSG to register with Charity Commission for charity status., which will allow applications for larger grants from public sources. Money already raised has helped towards the purchase of a dishwasher, which was first used at The Blues at The Vic Event attended by 130 people, and an A3 Laminator needed to help with publicity. The next main major project is the renovation of the balcony seats. Events in December include: on Dec 2nd, a stall at the Christmas Charity Gala in Victoria Hall; the 16th a Family Prize Bingo and Snowman Drive; the 18th Cash Prize Bingo; the 19th The Voce Singers, and the entering of a decorated tree in the St Paul’s Church Christmas Tree Festival. A full programme of events for 2018 will be published soon. Again, the Group is grateful for the huge support from the community in helping to preserve the Victoria Hall and we hope to see you for morning refreshments each Friday in the former Police Office. www. victoria-hallsupportgroup. btck.uk Mothers & Others
Oct 17th: Malcolm McIvor was the speaker and his subject was ‘My House’. His work had taken him to Darlington where her purchased an old house
which needed a lot of renovation to restore it to its former glory. He became intrigued by its previous owners and researching through census records its history come to life. An enjoyable evening.
Oct 31st: Our planned speaker was unable to attend so members played Chinese Chequers and Dominoes while other members sewed items to adorn the tree for the Christmas Festival at St Paul’s Church. Nove 14th: Mike Whittaker was the speaker. He had been a police dog handler in Yorkshire. He brought photographs of the Alsatians he had trained. Some showed them living as the family pet and others portrayed them on duty. His talk was interesting and informative, questions were answered to conclude a pleasant evening. It was appropriate that Isobel Stirk’s talk “Warriors, Writers and War Hospitals”. about poets and novelists who shared their experiences during the First World War took place during the month of November. For December we will be having a bit of magic. On December 19th “The Magic of Christmas” will be presented by the North West Society of Magicians. We have special memories of the fun and magic and the “volunteers” co-opted to the stage! We will be taking part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Paul’s church and have an inspired working party beavering away at producing special decorations for our tree featuring the U3A ethos and examples of our many activities – all decked out on the blue and yellow U3A colours. Several of our interest groups have a Christmas event (usually featuring some festive food) and/or introduce a seasonal theme; the German Language group likes to include stories related to the festival. Our main festive lunch will take place on 23rd January at the Cumbria Grand. More details of U3A’s many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites. org.uk/grange, at Grange Library and on posters around the town. Grange Lions
Our activities in the past few weeks have been the Bake Off, reported elsewhere in this issue, to raise funds for the Victoria Hall. We have also held our Annual Presentation Evening, at which we make presentations to the organisations for whom we have been raising funds during the year. This year we made presentations to St Mary’s Hospice, Jigsaw (the children’s hospice in Carlisle), Marie Curie Nurses, Kidsafe and Days for Girls International. We always look forward to our coffee morning at Flookburgh Village Hall. This year’s event will be on Saturday December 9th when we will have our usual array of cake stalls, tombolas, bottle stalls, etc. The morning has been well attended by local people in the past and we are very grateful to them. Over the coming weeks we will be out and about with the sleigh. The dates are published in this issue. Please come and greet us as the children we meet are thrilled and we can support local organisations with your donations. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. Please call me, Lion Dave Stubbins, on 07807 836591 for more information.

LETTERS Dear Editor,
Four ladies from Grange Methodist Network Group were invited to attend a meeting, organised by the North West Air Ambulance, at the Netherwood Hotel on the evening of Thursday 9th November.
The evening commenced with light refreshments, when members of the group moved amongst us talking to us about their work and experiences. There were about 150-200 people at the meeting - all supporters, as a group or individuals. After about an hour we all moved into the conference room at the Hotel where different groups and individuals were thanked for their support; photographed with the team and presented with a small badge. It was all very interesting listening to how various people had raised money; cycling groups, WI’s, individuals who had baked or knitted or men who had done odd jobs for people and stories from people who had much to thank the organisation for their rescue and care of a loved one. It showed us that in a small way we can all help to support this wonderful organisation to carry on the good work. Name and address supplied.
Dear Editor, Cartmel Methodist Chapel. The last of the eight coffee mornings took place on Sunday 28th October. Thanks to all our supporters we had a successful year and were able to send a donation to ‘Mary’s Meals’, an organisation for feeding African Children. Our Carol Service will be on Sunday 17th December at 11am and all are welcome. Judith Shapland
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor,
Having been through a difficult medical time and being now on the road to recovery can I take the opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to all of the many people who have sent their good wishes and kind thoughts. Such people include Grange Now, Grange U3A, Grange Institute, Victoria Hall, Bay
Dear Editor,
On behalf of JIGSAW, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, we would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Jean Malkin M.B.E. for her very generous donation of £92000, which she raised by swimming a phenomenal 70 tarns in a year, to celebrate her 70th Birthday. Well done Jean, this is an amazing achievement and because of Jean’s tremendous support for JIGSAW, this gift will help in so many different ways, providing children and their families with such a very special service in their times of need. JIGSAW, the only children’s Hospice within the County,

It may appear strange to write such a letter but my wife brought so many good wishes to me in hospital that it would be difficult to thank each individual. I am truly humbled by all the kind messages. Thanks, again. Best wishes Lawrie Woodley

Dear Editor Congratulations to Grange and District U14’s football team on their successful and innovative fundraising to purchase a new kit. (GN Oct 17) This brought back memories from the 1960s when I was about the same age. Back then a group of friends formed what may have been the first Grange AFC junior side although we only played ‘friendlies’. To look the part we raised our funds by holding a Grand Jumble Sale, enough money being raised to purchase the strip - red and white striped shirts and black shorts.
Among the players I remember were Robin and Jeremy Webster, Richard Foster, Michael Edmonds, David Hargreaves, Edgar Baines. Paul Cragg and Martin McClure. If anybody today can fill in the rest of the names I would love to be reminded. John Bedbrook
Dear Editor, My husband has recently had open heart surgery at Blackpool Victoria Hospital from which he has made a wonderful recovery.
Our thanks and appreciation go to the surgeon Mr Raimondo and medical team; Dr Ruell and all the doctors and staff at Peninsula Medical Practice for their kind attention and care which has been excellent.
We hear so many negative reports about the NHS but in this case the treatment has been very good and for which we are extremely grateful. Judith Slater

We may have actually seen the real end to ‘Commisery’. Recent findings by the Advertising Standards Agency has seen the ruling that certain misleading television adverts involving face fulls of cake, showers in milk and claims of ‘no commission’ are to be made more transparent. As I’ve said in the past – nothing in this life comes for free – and the suggestion that you could sell your property and not have to pay any commission is frankly ludicrous.
The thing that these adverts has unfortunately done is obscure all the good work that traditional agents do to ensure a property sale and the successful completion of the sometimes complex sales chain and conveyancing process. To highlight fee structure in such a misleading way is targeting the one thing that holds most people’s attention – money.
Looking beyond the apparent money saving headline you can see that not everything is as it seems. In most cases internet agents are either paid up front or clients have signed up to a loan to guarantee the money. This creates a scenario where the client is paying for a service that they have not yet, or may not even, receive. A No Sale – Pay Fee business model means that there is less impetus to ensure that a sale is achieved as the fee is already guaranteed! This is also mirrored in the efforts to maintain a successful property transaction chain. Whereas traditional agents are extremely proactive in ensuring the effective progression of an agreed sale to exchange and completion, it is often the agent who already has a guaranteed fee that creates the weak link in this chain. And as we know a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If one sale collapses then the rest comes tumbling down around it.
Offer ends next 21 days
At Poole Townsend we offer a No Sale – No Fee service. It is my strong belief that if a sale is not achieved then we haven’t done our job – you wouldn’t pay the milkman if he left a cow on your doorstep!
Our service offers all the internet coverage of online agents (and has done before internet agents existed) with exposure on RightMove, OnTheMarket and Lake District Property alongside the Poole Townsend web site. On top of this we use local media, applicant lists and proactive marketing to provide a service beyond just the World Wide Web. By offering the No Sale – No Fee service we carry all the risk in a house sale. We therefore have a vested interest in agreeing and more importantly completing a sale. Contact us in the office to discuss how we can successfully sell your property.
