Letter from the Editor This month I want to tell you a bit about the people who make this paper happen each month.
We have around 60 regular writers and contributors - all co-ordinated by Sharon who edits, keeps control and checks for accuracy while simultaneously investigating local events and stories and sometimes campaigning to right a wrong or encourage change for the good of the community. She will follow up stories through the month, talk to the people involved and get to the heart of local issues. In addition she will edit articles and notices that are sent to us about events, clubs, school reports and so on. As deadline approaches, Sharon does a terrific job as news editor and will bring all the articles and images together, checking for accuracy and making sure we have a good balance of all areas, that captions are correct and so on. This is a demanding task and it includes the what’s on listing, requiring particular attention to detail. At the same time Sarah (and Chris) is involved with talking to advertisers, preparing proofs, listening to instructions and turning them into attractive advert designs. Sometimes our advertisers provide their own artwork but more often the design is done by us. This might be for a job advert, a local tradesperson or for private items for sale. Sarah has a huge task with the job of ensuring that the advert and contact details from a large number of local businesses are accurately represented ensuring that they receive good quality enquiries after advertising in Grange Now. She also takes responsibility for all the accounts, invoicing and credit control which ultimately is the most important task in enabling us to continue providing this newspaper through your door free of charge. Which brings us to Glenn who as our head graphic designer, not only designs the adverts but also brings the pages to life by laying the articles and images provided by Sharon and the writing team. Once finished, the paper heads off to the printer and is then delivered by a first class team of almost 50 local people less than a week later. We then start the next issue! Grange Now is a real team effort by local people who live and work in the area and are all committed to providing a quality community newspaper every month. Tempting as it was to come up with an April fool story in this issue we have resisted the temptation - or have we? Happy Easter everyone.

New Co-ordinator urgently required The Voluntary Social Car Scheme run by Cumbria County Council is a very worthwhile and much needed scheme which provides transport to members of the community who cannot make their journey by public or private transport. It allows people to be more independent so that they can attend doctor/ dentist appointments and social events and even go shopping without having to constantly impose on friends and family. The Scheme is working very well in Grange and the surrounding areas at the moment and the team of Drivers are able to cover almost all the requests for journeys that are received. However, the Co-ordinator of the scheme, Kirsten Ross, is having to stand down later this year, after 4 years of being Co-ordinator. If no replacement Co-ordinator can be found the Car Scheme will have to fold despite having a good team of Drivers available. The Co-ordinator does not have to be a Driver, though that would be useful. They just need to receive the requests for journeys and contact the Drivers to find a volunteer who is able and willing to do the journey.
Volunteers are reimbursed for all expenses. Kirsten would be able to give full training to anyone willing to take on the post before handing over the reins and would be available for support in the future. She has found her time with the scheme very rewarding and has made many new friends. This is a great way to help your community and keep in touch even if you are not as physically able as you were. The time required is also very flexible, allowing you to fit it around other commitments. Grange Cancer Drop-In Group Grange Cancer Drop-In Group recently enjoyed a visit from Emily Quick of The Owl Sanctuary with some of her owls. A spokesperson told Grange Now, “It was a thoroughly entertaining and informative afternoon and we learned many facts about these fascinating birds and were encouraged to handle them.” Formerly called ‘St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group’ the Dropin Centre offer friendship, understanding and support to everyone who is affected by cancer: patients, relatives/ carers and those who are bereaved. They meet every Friday in the Father Magner Room, St Charles’ Catholic Church, Kents Bank Road between 2pm - 4pm.
“We enjoy shared friendship and experiences as well as games, talks and demonstrations, poetry afternoons, monthly raffle and occasional trips out to local places of interest. Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS This month we take a brief look at Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). Not to be confused, there are two very different types: cash ISAs and Investment ISAs. Cash ISAs are essentially bank or building society savings accounts earning interest tax free. Interest rates in general are low and therefore so are returns on cash ISAs. Investments ISAs are likewise tax advantaged but instead of holding cash they can hold a range of things but typically bonds and shares. Returns therefore depend on the underlying investments rather than interest rates. Up to £20,000 per person can be contributed to ISAs per tax year. We are often asked which is best? The answer is it all depends on your circumstances, objectives and many other elements. An easy question but not an easy answer! The overriding fact is that returns are tax advantaged and should not be overlooked. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. SLDC work towards ‘light touch’ for lido At its March meeting Grange Town Council showed unanimous support for SLDC’s plan to carry out a basic refurbishment of the Lido. Following that show of support, an application to set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) has been sent to Companies House. The CIC would build on SLDC’s basic work and develop plans for the Lido’s future use. These two steps have been taken to encourage SLDC to carry out a basic refurbishment of the Lido. The SLDC refurbishment will
Grange Town Council Prior to the start of the full town council meeting on Monday 12th March, a minute’s silence was observed for former Councillor and Chairman, Robert Leach who died on 27th February. Mr Leach was also founder of the incredibly successful Prom Art. Apologies came from Cllr. Martin Ingle and an announcement from Mayor, Cllr Peter Endsor that Cllr Tom Harvey had resigned earlier that day. In respect of Tom Harvey’s resignation, if more than 80 residents from Grange call for an election then one will
probably take about 2 years. The CIC’s development of plans for the Lido’s future uses will need a lot of discussions with specialists in different fields: hospitality and catering; the entertainment industry; markets and trading; conservation and wildlife; children’s activities; cycling and other outdoor activities; and so on. The CIC will need to work out which activities can be sustained over a lengthy period and especially where reliable long-term sources of money will come from. The starting assumption is that the large space inside the Lido can support several different types of activity. For the avoidance of any doubt, I should emphasise that there is no prospect of the Lido being revived as a swimming pool.
Peter Endsor, our Mayor, has described the restoration of the Lido for future recreational uses as the biggest opportunity coming Grange’s way for years ahead, and I think that he is right. If we are to seize that opportunity, every single one of us in Grange will need to put in our ideas and possibly our time and effort.

District Councillor Eric Morrell offered condolences on the death of Robert Leach saying he will be sorely missed and that he had done a great deal for the town over the years. Cllr. Morrell went on to ask Grange Town Council to ‘wholeheartedly’ back a plan by SLDC to carry out the ‘light touch option’ in respect of Grange Lido (see Cllr. Morrell’s column above for full details).

During the ‘Have your say’ section, former Councillors’ Frank McCall and Bill Woods spoke of their concern over the illegal and often downright dangerous parking in Grange. They presented photographic evidence to the Council showing vehicles parked on double yellow lines, across pavements and on bends and junctions. The death of Robert Leach, about which more is said elsewhere, has been a sad loss to Grange. Robert was, amongst many other things, the brains and driving force behind PromArt. We will need his determination if we are to make the Lido succeed. But the example and success of PromArt is there for all of us to see and it should encourage us.

Festival celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary On Saturday 9th June, the Grange Edwardian Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Festival was the brainchild of former Grange Town Clerk, Frank Brooks who was also behind reinstating band concerts at the Bandstand in Park Road Gardens and the Historic Vehicle Rally.
T
he first Edwardian Festival was held in May 1994 and ran for two weeks with various events including a pram race on the prom, coffee mornings, Edwardian afternoon teas, and a walk around Old Grange. The Festival itself was held in the centre of Grange, on Main Street, and the road was closed for the day with permission of the police. Mary Ann Harris (Best) former Grange Now Editor/Owner was one of the organisers and remembers the closure cost £200 and the road was closed with hay bales. After two years the Festival was moved to the Promenade and became a weekend event, with a Craft Fair and Band Concert on the Sunday in Park Road Gardens. “A two week event was too complicated to sustain,” said Mary Ann. “After all we were only a volunteer workforce!“ In 1999, after 3 years on the prom, the Festival moved again to its present site in Park Road Gardens and the date was changed to the second Saturday in June – it was thought the weather would be warmer in June. The cover of the first ever programme shows a photo of the Bandstand when it was sited on the prom. Apparently,
the bandstand was moved to its current home, Park Road Gardens because ladies complained that soot from the passing steam trains was ruining their clothes! Incredibly, the festival is organised by just four people: MaryAnn, Geraldine Gordon, Michael Fieldhouse and Cllr.Tricia Thomas. Local scouts help the night before erecting the arches and helping to deliver tables on the day. The scouts are organised by Michael Fieldhouse. Any help on the day would be greatly appreciated by the team. It doesn’t have to be all day, just an hour on the gate would help enormously. It’s a fantastic achievement to keep an event going for such a long period of time and it would be wonderful if as many people as possible got involved this year. U3A has a strong self help ethos and this is clearly seen in the Discussion Group. The topics which we talk about are decided by the membership and each session has an introduction researched and prepared by one of the members of the group. Sometimes we have invited another U3A member to come along to start us off where they have special knowledge of the subject as a result of their own experience and careers. We try to strike a balance in our topics with some being global in nature, some mainly about the UK and others of particular local significance. A topical issue we explored was the problems arising from plastic waste; litter at a local level; pollution of the land, rivers and oceans; impact on wildlife and the spread of plastic particles into the food chain including our own diets. But what about solutions and our own role in addressing the situation? Do we think about packaging when we are shopping, do we avoid products that contain

Militaria Auction Uncovers Local Wartime Story Our latest Militaria and Weapons auction included a letter and a series of four postal cards written in 1943 to a Miss Jess MacLennan of Silverdale. They were all penned on behalf of Lieutenant J Southard, who, having been caught out by a German patrol “with only my pistol”, had found himself in a German hospital. He describes one bullet as having passed through the right side of his temple, exiting on the left. And then goes on
to say, “the other bullet is a much more serious matter” as it entered his stomach and did “a certain amount of damage to the old entrails and my hip”. The postal cards from 1943 and 1944 confirm his recovery and weight gain and that he’s awaiting repatriation. Leaving us to wonder 55 years later whether his repatriation brought him back to Silverdale and Miss MacLennan? If only we had that answer on a postcard too.
SLDC backing a plan to be plastic-free South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) are getting behind a plan to further tackle plastic waste. They plan to offer free drinking water, from their Lowther Street address, to encourage people to refill reusable bottles. The new water dispenser which will be placed in the reception area of their offices in Kendal will be available from March.
Councillors also voted unanimously in favour of a motion that will ‘commit the authority to phasing out the use of all single-use plastic products in its activities by the end of the year’. SLDC Leader, Cllr Giles Archibald, motion read: ‘This council will become a single-use plastic free council by phasing out the use of single use plastic products such as bottles, cups, cutlery and drinking straws in council activities, where it is reasonable to do so, by the end of 2018 and to encourage our facilities’ users, local businesses and other local public agencies to do the same by championing alternatives, such as reusable water bottles.’
It’s all part of a national campaign to reduce the use of plastic and also get the nation drinking more water. A mobile ‘app’ is available showing all the ‘Refill’ station throughout the UK. It is hoped many more outlets in the area will come onboard with the scheme. Whitbread Plc, who own Costa and Premier Inn are the first national company to sign up and refill sites will be available at 3,000 of their outlets from the beginning of March.

Grange business leading the way with plastic-free It’s well-known that the phenomenal Blue Planet series has prompted a country-wide revolution against plastic and it’s certainly long overdue.
However, a business right here in Grange has been doing their bit for the environment for nearly thirty years. Husband and wife team, Richard and Jenny, run ‘Fletchers greengrocers’ (RA & JS Fletcher & Sons) on Kents Bank Road, along with sons Andrew and Rick. A recent facebook post by Jenny Shaw tells the delights of plastic-free shopping at Fletchers, where fruit and veg can be bought loose and unpackaged or placed in a paper bag. Cumbria County Council’s Apprenticeship Team has been hosting events in the County last month.
During March the County Council has been recruiting for apprenticeship opportunities across a range of service areas including engineering, fire and rescue, social care, project management and many more. The council is committed to apprenticeships and is making a big effort to develop our offer, and over the next year we will be recruiting well over 100 apprenticeship roles.
As part of the national advertising campaign, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging people in Cumbria to test the smoke alarms in their home and those of vulnerable friends/relatives, and if not yet done, purchase and install smoke alarms at every level of the home. With Easter falling early this year, the weather may still be chilly, but ‘chilly’ is perfect for enjoying a big hearty Easter lunch indoors! We’d like a bit of sunshine mind you, so that we can get out and about to walk off the Easter excesses (or should that be egg-cesses?)
It showcases two of our Low Sizergh Barn farm shop suppliers: Hodmedods, who work with British farmers to provide pulses and grains through fair and sustainable UK production, and, Inverawe Smokehouse, whose fish is slowly oak-smoked to give a true taste of the Highlands. INGREDIENTS
Serves 2
FOR THE QUINOA CRACKERS 160g (5.5oz) Hodmedods quinoa, soaked overnight in a covered bowl and drained 110ml (4floz) water ½ teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons olive oil

FOR THE TOPPING 1 tablespoon capers Handful of sorrel leaves Olive oil for frying 4 Low Sizergh Farm eggs Salt and black pepper 1 apple (Granny Smith best) 50-75g (2-2.5oz) Inverawe smoked salmon
METHOD
5-10 minutes.
1. To make the crackers, preheat the oven to 180°C. Whizz the quinoa, water and salt in a food processor until you get a consistency like double cream.
4. To make the topping, fry the capers and sorrel in a little olive oil until crispy, then drain on a piece of kitchen towel.
3. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp on the bottom. Flip each cracker over and bake for a further

Now heading into 2018 and its third year, the festival offers a balance between keeping the festival intimate and friendly, and being able to offer more experiences and entertainment to more people! We can't wait to bring our ideas and hard work to
fruition in July 2018! This festival has grown over two sell-out years to become a local household name event that puts on a large variety of entertainment, art, food, drinks, fun, camping and all of the things one might expect of a much larger festival. Printfest is dedicated to the exhibition and sale of contemporary handmade prints, it is a rare opportunity for some of the best of the UK’s printmakers to gather under one roof, to share practice and learn from each other. Flookburgh pupil is inspired by Wordsworth
That was quite an Act, Sister! There was quite a few ‘firsts’ in Grange Amateur Operatic Society’s latest production. First show of the year, first time that Sister Act the Musical has been done in Grange and first production for Hannah Fish as Producer/ Choreographer and I’m delighted to say it was a first-class show. The cast were fantastic in their roles. You’re always on to a winner when Sam Grundy is the lead and she was in fine voice as Deloris. Pam Mellor was perfectly cast and absolutely hilarious as Mother Superior and there was a great performance from Trudi Carter as Sister Mary Patrick. Everyone brought style and panache to their roles and the show was slick, well-rehearsed and very enjoyable to watch. Alastair Rae as Monsignor O’Hara and
Twenty-five year medal for Hilary
Following the Friday evening performance of Sister Act (2nd March) costumier, Hilary Stubbs was awarded with her twenty-five year’s service award from NODA. Hilary is behind all the amazing costumes seen in all Grange Amateur Dramatic Society productions. In her costume rooms, based in Cartmel, Hilary has a dizzying array of garments and, in the unlikely event that she doesn’t have the right costume, and given enough notice, she’ll make you one.
Thomas Kidd as TJ also deserve a special mention as does the irrepressible Simon McCleery as a cagedancing drag act - you had to be there! Olivia Muir played the part of the un-wordly Sister Mary Robert brilliantly and Louis Simon gave a stellar performance as ‘Sweaty Eddie’. I can’t mention everyone
in the space available but the whole cast certainly deserve it. Musical Director, Jane Thedham, and the Orchestra were exceptional and the backstage crew and front of house staff all bring the whole production together to give us, the audience, a very enjoyable couple of hours. A fantastic show, Hannah, very well done.
In the February edition of Grange Now, we wrote about the annual Wordsworth Young Poets competition. Organised by the family of the great poet, they asked for school age wordsmiths to pen a poem about ‘Deep Waters’ and Lily Lloyd answered the call. A pupil at Flookburgh Primary, Lily (9), spotted the competition on our School Reports page and set about crafting her entry. She won’t find out until after 22nd March how she’s done but we’re so impressed with her entry that we’re printing it here. Her parents, Jon and Shirley Lloyd, are rightfully very proud of their young daughter.
Start of a new season but end of an era Organisers are now preparing for the new season of PromArt on the beautiful prom right here in Grange. A spokesperson told Grange Now, “The 2017 season was very successful with an average of 60 plus exhibitors, all individuals selling only their own work – be it paintings or photographs, needlework or glassware, woodwork or wrought iron work plus many talented crafts people. Exhibitors travel from as far away as Bolton, Warrington, Preston, Carlisle as well as our near neighbours from Milnthorpe, Ulverston, Kendal and locally from Grange and Allithwaite. PromArt is still the largest regular open-air Art and Crafts fair in the Northwest. “PromArt was established back in 2004 when Robert Leach, together with Haydon Giffney, had a vision of getting together a few excellent local artists to show their work along

Starting on Wednesday 4th April, there is another chance to see Annie Southward’s wonderful seascapes. Grange Library will host the exhibition and Annie told Grange Now, “The paintings, acrylics on canvas, are all beach scenes inspired by recent trips to the Scottish island of Iona and all displayed paintings are available for purchase”.
On Friday 6th April, the ‘Prince Bishop's Brass Quintet’ provide the music for the next concert in the Grange-over-Sands & District concert club's 2018 season. The North East's premier brass ensemble, based in County Durham, will take the audience on a musical journey from Bach to Boogie.

Joan Hill chalks up 55 years On Friday 2nd March, after the amazing Grange & District Operatic Society’s performance of Sister Act, long-time member, Joan Hill, received her fifty-five year NODA service medal and pin. Joan joined the group as a dancer when she was just seventeen. She told Grange Now, “I joined with my friend Jen Burrows, who was Burrell back then, and Marilyn Howson (nee Robinson) and we were all dancers. My first show was in 1965 and it was called Waltz Time.
“A few years later we were joined by Lynn Davey (nee Robinson) and Carol Haines. Eventually, I gave up performing and began helping with make-up, hair, chaperoning and choreography and that’s what I still do today as well as front of house and, of course, helping with the teas!” Joan’s daughters Deana and Gail followed in her theatrical footsteps. In 1986, Gail was
in Oliver and in 1997 Deana joined and had main roles in Me & My GIrl (1998), Dolly (1990), Carousel (2000) and Half a Sixpence in 2001. In 2010, Gail’s eldest daughter Deanne had a role in Carousel. Quite the family affair! Joan said, “It was lovely to see dancers back in the pantomime last year. There was a group of really good dancers who entertained the audience during Dick Whittington & his Cat.”

Can’t Beat It at St. Peter’s Field Broughton Well actually, you can! For quite a few years now, members of the congregation, and other keen local perambulators, have annually ‘beaten the bounds’ of our parish. (In 2018 it was on 24th March.) Many assume that these ancient practices are dying out. Well, at St Peter’s, we beg to differ, and are determined to maintain this tradition. The walk is about 15 miles, and The Crown at High Newton, provides a convenient half-way resting place for lunch and other refreshments – not to mention an excuse for those who feel able to complete only half the walk! This tradition had an important purpose in the past: Knowledge of parish limits needed to be handed down so it was known who was responsible for church repairs, and who had the right to be buried within the churchyard. The undoubted highlight of the past month has been taking part – along with other local churches - in ‘Moving Mountains’ - a four day event taking place simultaneously with churches throughout Cumbria. We hosted a visiting team of ecumenical church leaders who came to share in local activities aimed at reaching out into our communities. Our team was led by Bishop Libby Lane, recently appointed as Bishop of Stockport with four other team members took part in various events ranging from “Grill a Bishop” at our local pub, taking school assemblies, visiting youth groups and care homes and enjoying a

On Saturday 10th March the Church hosted two events as part of the ‘Moving Mountains’ mission. A virtual prayer trail guided participants round a series of thought provoking displays set up around the Church. In the evening more than 60 people enjoyed an ‘Italian Evening’ with Italian food prepared by the catering team and musical entertainment provided by Victor Hindle, Sue Harrison and Sylvia Trohear. Bishop Libby Lane visits the Cartmel Peninsula The first female Bishop in the Church of England, the Rt. Revd Libby Lane, visited our area from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th March as part of an ecumenical initiative engaging with Methodist, URC and Catholic churches in Cumbria. Accompanying Bishop Libby were members of her Team; the Revd Joe Moffat from Teddington, London; the Revd Jessica Piper and two lay workers Jonathan Masters and Chris Wood. Local church leaders including Revd Andrew from St Pauls and Revd Jo from Grange Methodist church were also involved. Members of local community groups, charities and organisations were invited to a drinks reception at the Netherwood Hotel on the Friday evening and all enjoyed the opportunity to chat with Bishop Libby and her team. Saturday saw the team at the Repair Café held in the URC Hall, a joint initiative between Grange URC and Grange Methodist Church. The Repair Café invites residents to bring items in need of repair, carried out by local handymen (and women). Mrs Lilian Greenhalgh was very

Grange Methodist
Members took an active part in the County initiative ‘Moving Mountains’ an outreach sponsored by the Archbishop of York. In our part of the world, we had a team from the Diocese of Chester, headed by Bishop Libby, who was the first lady bishop ever appointed in England. There were meetings of all kinds planned, a Curry Evening, an Italian evening, a walk on the Cistercian Way, and a ’Meet the Bishop’ evening. Bishop Libby gave the word, reminding us that Mother’s Day can bring sadness as well as joy and that we should be mindful of those who are not able to celebrate as others can, and that God’s love is for all There were daffodils on the table and we were invited to take some, and include a heart shaped card, which reminds us that God’s love is for everyone.
On Sunday 11th, over 200 people tucked into breakfast and afterwards took part in a Mothering Sunday service in the Victoria Hall, before it was time for Bishop Libby and her team to bid farewell to the Cartmel Peninsula.

Time for Peace 2018
Since September last year Cartmel Quakers have held a monthly half hour of quiet contemplation. Open to all, we call these moments of stillness ‘Time for Peace’; time where we can join others in a comfortable and relaxed setting and reflect on issues concerning peace, whether that be within ourselves, our community or our world.
Bishop Libby grew up in Derbyshire and began attending her village church from the age of eleven. Her parents were not religious and she went for the first time with a school friend. Whilst studying for the priesthood she met who was to be her future husband and they were ordained together. The couple have a son and a daughter. Becoming a bishop was a surprise “Being a bishop isn’t something you train for,” she said, “You have to wait to be asked.” She never expected to be the first woman in the Church of England to become a bishop. Although Bishop Libby is adamant she isn’t a woman bishop. She says she is a bishop who happens to be a woman. Thanks to MaryAnn Harris for this report. We are planning a training session on April 12th at 7pm and hope that church members and representatives of organisations that meet in the hall will come for tips on how to use it. A BUSINESS force to be reckoned with is at large in South Lakeland, generating well over £3 million pounds for its members and helping countless good causes. Taking just one high-calibre member from each profession or trade, the aim of attracting some of the best people in their fields continues to be realised, according to chair Chris Granger. The Kendal-based architect said InGroup’s remarkable growth and success was easy to plot, based on a combined passion for cutting-edge service, quality, best possible results and maximising opportunities. He added: “We celebrate being local and operating in the heart

However, many members have national, even international clients, so the scope of what we do and how we do it is enormous. “With a strong sense of camaraderie, trust and shared commitment, members pass work to each other, knowing each and every job will be expertly handled. Our people are well-connected and extensive commissions keep coming our way.” Meeting every Friday for a breakfast gathering at Kendal Golf Club, members pass work referrals round the table and tally up invoiced work for the week. and visitors attend. According to Chris, it helps keep the group up to speed with wide-ranging issues and local charities.

Being one of South Lakeland’s best-kept secrets is certainly not part of the remit. “We want to be out there with the public knowing who we are and what we do.” So far, around £6,000 has been donated to charity, help given to Kendal flood victims, a bursary scheme rolled out at Kendal College and over £3 million generated to date supporting South Lakeland’s economy. “Unlike other networking groups, we are not hidebound by franchise, meaning we are free to go our own way and that has been the cornerstone of our success,” said Chris. “We have 23 members, are always keen to welcome new interest and especially work commissions. Wow, well March was a bit of a roller coaster weather wise with winter cast as a creepy B-movie bad guy that just won’t die; returning again and again to wreak further havoc. So, understandably, you might have gotten a little bit behind with a few things at your allotment. By now you’ve probably got an army of seedlings crowding your window sills but hold fast, and only plant out your hardier plants like broad beans and leeks. Brown Robin - Helping our countryside As many of you will know, I am the Honorary Reserve Manager for Brown Robin Nature Reserve, and have been for many years now. This mainly involves being the eyes and ears for the reserve. I got this position shortly after my first work party as I was nominated by the previous manager. At first it was a steep learning curve to get to know the reserve in order to understand it and then help manage it. But now I think I know almost every nook and cranny.
We get a regular band of volunteers which is great as over time they also get to know the reserve and can also help with planning etc. Some just come once and some come two or three times, but we get a mix of interesting people as well. The last work party we had a gentleman came along to help out but he
was waiting to go to the Antarctic with the British arctic expedition team and would be there for several months. We get students studying the environment and are looking for practical experience. We had one gentleman who would turn up on a bicycle with a rucksack and a large axe poking out of it when we would be coppicing. People sometimes travel a distance to help out too, from as far as Bolton and Cockermouth and Yorkshire. I owe a thank you to these people who come and help out as otherwise vital work would not be carried out. The Cumbria Wildlife Trust is small compared with other conservation organisations and relies on volunteers, as they have few resources. Brown Robin is relatively lucky in the sense it is a small reserve and we have a small team of dedicated helpers on a regular basis. But others are much larger

and require an enormous amount of work.
The Southern reserves officer has six reserves to look after, including South walney, so you can imagine what a task he has to get all the practical work done with so few volunteers. I am highlighting this as recently I saw some comments regarding one of the reserves and they were complaining about some debris left in an area. And I thought to myself, rather than just sit and complain about it, why not get out and help them. Get some fresh air, get physical and learn about the environment you are complaining about. It’s our wildlife, but they are doing their best to look after it for us. So if you have a free day or even just an afternoon, they would love you to come along and help. Cartmel’s Legal Eagles head to Carlisle On Wednesday 7 March, Cartmel Priory School’s team of ‘Legal Eagles’ headed north to Carlisle Magistrates’ Court to take part in the first round of this year’s Citizenship Foundation Mock Trial competition. Having studied the case in English lessons, a group of eleven Year 9 students successfully auditioned for the school team and spent many lunchtimes and after-school sessions analysing witness statements for a fictional case entitled, “R vs Fenton”. The case centred around an alleged knife crime and students performed in a variety of roles, including lawyers, witnesses and court officials. Having prepared their arguments, the team competed in two trials at

the Magistrates’ Court, watched over by their teachers and a number of legal professionals there to judge performances. Tensions ran high as verdicts were awaited and returned. Witnesses were questioned and speeches made, all in an attempt to ensure justice was done. In both our trials, the defendant was found guilty and lead magistrates spent time explaining what the consequences would be for the accused. As a result, our students got
a real insight into the way the country’s legal system works in practice. At the end of a very busy morning, the organisers announced that the Cartmel team had won and would now represent the North West at the regional finals in Newcastle on 19 May. Each class participated in their own class based activities. Snowy Owls learnt about light bulbs and how they work, they also discovered that Seahorses carry their eggs in a pouch. Tawny Owls were paleontologists just like Mary Anning. They learnt about fossils, dug for bones and built an amazing T Rex that they named Melly. Barn Owls looked at the scientist Leonardo Da Vinci specifically the parachute, catapult and zip wire concepts. They then used these to make effective weapons and means of entering into Boudicca's camp as they
have been studying the Romans. Eagle Owls had a day of 'Kitchen Science' using items found in the kitchen to make a range of activities, marshmallow constellations , life cycles, jelly earthquakes, and chocolate chip palaeontology amongst other things! All the children and staff had a fantastic day!
Cartmel Primary
After a well-earned Easter break, children at Cartmel CE Primary School will be heading outdoors to enjoy some great new additions to their garden space. We have just taken delivery of a smart new greenhouse, in which children will grow their own produce, and will be welcoming the team from L’Enclume restaurant in Cartmel to help us with the new growing facilities. We will also work on a squash project down at their farm. This, in conjunction with our new willow tunnel will enhance our outdoor area. The Spring Term saw children do the school proud in gym and

hockey competitions with other local primary schools. Older children have been following the ‘Bikeability’ programme to learn how to ride safely, and Class 2 enjoyed a trip to the 18th century corn mill at Beetham. We have also welcomed several important church visitors to the school, including Archdeacon Vernon Ross, who joined us for worship and talked to our Ethos Group. A team from the ‘Moving Mountains’ project organised by Cumbrian churches visited to tell us about the Parable of the Mustard Seed, and the Headteacher and Chair of Governors were delighted to meet with the UK’s first female Bishop, Libby Lane.

Fifty Years of Grange Preschool (1968 - 2018)
Science Flying High at Grange Primary
Grange Preschool is preparing for a series of events to celebrate their golden anniversary at their current location – but the preschool might never have got its start in life were it not for the generosity of one particular parent. Grange Playgroup, as it was then known, was formed in September 1964 by a group of mothers who wanted to give their children the chance to play together. Early attempts to create a group had failed until one mother offered the use of two attic rooms at her home in nearby Cark. The organisation went on to flourish, offering early years education for local children, and, after a two year stay at the Congregational Church Hall from 1966, settled in to its current home of the Playing Fields Pavilion, off Yew Tree Road, at the start of 1968. Staff are now encouraging any children or parents who have attended over the last 54 years – no matter how ‘grown up’ they might be – to events to celebrate the preschool’s 50 years. Lindale Primary and Pre-School Nursery Two teams qualified for the South Lakes Key Steps Gym competition at Cartmel Priory School. Well done to our 10 gymnasts, especially the Key Step 2 team who finished runners up.
In the same week, 16 Y3 6 children took part in the Elleray Cross Country event at Windermere School. Congratulations to Harvey who came 6th in the U10 race. Our Y3/4 & Y5/6 teams competed in the cluster Quicksticks Hockey festival. It was a cold, breezy morning at Cartmel but all the teams tried really hard and some good games were played on
Children were supported by staff from FETL and Siemens to complete the different activities. In one activity children were able to explore UAVs more commonly known as drones. Despite the weather, children were able to see one of the drones flying in the School hall as well as using VR glasses to experience the flying quadcopter. Elsewhere children investigated how nature has played a key role in the development of rotor blades by designing sycamore seeds to test out of the classroom window! Model hot air balloons were made by all children and then a model hot air balloon was lit to show the children how heat helps the balloon to lift, before being reeled back in on the string to prevent any environmental damage. The final activity was looking at aeroplanes. Children designed their own paper planes as well as used the stomp rockets to launch their own planes on the school field. An amazing day was had by all the children but it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of the staff, volunteers and businesses who gave their time and expertise.

We will continue our active lifestyles for Sport Relief by clocking up the miles by walking, running, skipping at school every day, and carrying on to hopefully succeed in the Active Cumbria 100 mile Challenge Our recent Science week was around the theme ‘Exploring and discovering’.
The children had an exciting time working in mixed age groups to undertake various investigations and experiments. Years 4,5 and 6 had a really interesting day working on Robotics with graduates from BAE Systems. A group of Year 5 and 6 pupils have once again taken part in the South Lakes Pupil Parliament; taking part in a question and answer session with Tim Farron MP and delivering their own presentation on e-safety.
In the Easter Holidays Grange Library will have Cumbrian children’s author, Amy StretchParker, reading her story ‘Peter Digs a Den’ (rescheduled from Half Term). The reading will start at 11am on Wednesday 4th April 2018. This is a free event but places are limited, so tickets can be collected from the Library or reserved by phoning 32749. Another after School Code Club for children will be starting in the Library on Monday 23rd April 2018. This will be for 6 weeks (excluding May Day and Whit Monday) from 3.30 to 4.30 pm and is FREE for children aged 7 to 11 years. Places are limited and booking is required. A well attended March meeting enjoyed an amusing and interesting talk by John Natlacen of Churchmouse Cheeses in Barbon. He gave us a potted history of how he became a cheesemonger and provided samples of five very different cheeses – there was something for every palette –and each one very distinctive. With examples on sale many members bought their favourites.

Despite the cold, windy evening of 1 March, a few brave members attended Dr Suzanne Tiplady’s talk on 300 years of schooling in Satterthwaite. A church survey of 1718 referred to local education for the poor. Poor parents paid 1p per week to Satterthwaite’s curate who was licensed to be a teacher. Richer parent’s children went to Grammar Schools at Hawkshead or Cartmel. We were entertained by stories about successive school teachers some of whom were also curates. Increasing population led to a school being built because the Chapel was deemed unsuitable and in 1850 money was raised from across the district to build a replacement, joint, village school for
Satterthwaite and Rusland with a house for the teacher. Donations were received from William Wordsworth and people from the Cartmel area. Shakespeare was taught and teaching was rated as excellent but the introduction of compulsory education in 1876 caused standards to fall and needlework was the only subject mentioned. Information about many of the teachers was illustrated with pictures. The school closed in July 2006 when there were only 9 pupils and 1 teacher left. The season for Lindale Bowling Club began on saturday March 10th after the Chairman for this year,Bob Moseley delivered his woods in excellent style after which the members managed to play several games before the rain set in for the afternoon. Our annual event with Heversham Bowling Club will take place at Lindale on Saturday March 24th and the first internal competition will be the Johnson’s Trophy organised by Alan Anderson,on April 14th. A rules seminar delivered by referees Colin Haworth and Alan Anderson will take place at Lindale Bowling Club on Wednesday March 28th at 7pm.

On 13th February in an illustrated lecture ‘Barrow’s Boys and Other Polar Explorers’ Brian Wilson spoke engagingly about man’s heroic attempts to discover a northwest passage via the Arctic to the Pacific. He described five expeditions organised by Ulverston-born Sir John Barrow (17641848) when Second Secretary to the Admiralty, using naval personnel available after the Napoleonic wars. Though valuable geographical knowledge was obtained, none of them succeeded (that was left to Amundsen in 1903-6) and Franklin’s 1845 expedition was not heard from again. Brian described the hardship and loss of life caused by the cold, disease, starvation and even cannibalism. On 6th March space expert Jerry Stone presented his personal vision of ‘The Next 50 Years in Space’ and identified three projects he thought might be completed or see significant progress over the next 50 years: landing humans on Mars; building a space elevator (a means of getting into space without need for large rockets); and colonising space by installing human settlers inside a vast, high-orbiting cylinder powered by solar energy and provided with an earthlike environment. At the AGM preceding Jerry’s lecture Malcolm Kimber was elected President for 2018-19. The new season of lectures begins on 9th October. Lower Holker W. I.

The talk on Four Hawaiian Islands by Howard Graves took us around the main islands discovered by captain Cook in 1778. His return in 1779 saw his death at the hands of natives. The films South Pacific and Jurassic Park provided a showcase for the silver sands and mountainous backdrops of these remote islands. Andrew Lowe’s wide experience was vividly illuminated in his talk on Lakeland Architecture through the centuries. Many photos showed us the range of houses , from modest buildings to sumptuous dwellings that exist around the Lakes. From defensive towers to grandiose homes of successful business men from Manchester, Liverpool and Bolton we learnt the reasons behind the wide variety of architecture we see around us.

The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 13th of March at Holker Village Hall. Janet Browne was the visiting tutor, entitling her workshop “A little Bird”. Members were fascinated with the reverse applique technique which proved to be a great technique for producing some lovely birds. Janet provided help and guidance to allow members to carry on with other more complex designs on their own. The next meeting is on Tuesday 10th of April when Branch member Sandra Kendall will be showing us how to do Monoprinting. New members are most welcome to join us on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Adele Jones came along to demonstrate tree grafting for apples and helped members to try it themselves .She explained why growing trees from seeds doesn’t work. It is thought the Romans knew about this skill. 20th February: We started the meeting with the presentation of a cheque for £100 which was gratefully received by Helen Carlson, Head of Fundraising for St. Mary’s Hospice. She said it would be put to good use in caring for patients either in the Hospice or in the comfort of their own homes. This was followed by a cheese and wine tasting. Len Gee had brought red and white wine from various countries which were sampled and commented on. This was followed by a wine quiz, as you can imagine a very enjoyable evening ensued.
6th March: We started the meeting with the presentation of a cheque for £100 to Sally Haines, who gratefully accepted it on behalf of the Victoria Hall Support Group. This has been formed to promote its use and maintenance and running costs after the withdrawal of funding by SLDC. This was followed by our Speaker, Mrs Dorothy Milner, who spoke on her love of quilting. She gave us an informative history on the subject and its basic construction. Each item from her beautiful collection was passed round for inspection. There were quilts, bedspreads, wall hangings, cot covers and cushions. A very enjoyable evening. NSPCC
Once again Jeremy and Mandy Voakes put on a wonderful display of Christmas Lights at their home, and the Grange Fundraising Committee are delighted to say as a result we have received a cheque for £4886.02. We would like to say an enormous thank you to the Voakes family for their continued support of the NSPCC as this money goes a long way to helping vulnerable children in Cumbria.
We have a varied programme of events planned for 2018, starting with a street collection on Saturday 5th May. Lots more coming so watch this space!.Thank you to everyone who continues to support us at all our events.

21 February marked the induction of two new members to the Club: Pam Green and Eric Marshall, the latter having been a Friend of the Club for several years. We wish them both many happy years of membership. On 21 March two new Friends of Rotary were inducted: Norman Green and Judith Harper. Again, we hope they will enjoy to the full their time in the Club. Derek Timms, our District Membership Chairman visited the Club on 14 March He delivered a considered, thought provoking talk and suggested innovative ways we can boost membership and attract like minded persons willing to put something back into the community as well as internationally.Anyone wanting information on the Rotary movement and interested in joining the Grange Club is most welcome to email Mike Butterworth, Membership Chair at mikeb3@btinternet.com. A highlight in our District year is the annual conference which took place at North Lakes Hotel, Penrith on 17 March. A most interesting, exciting and informative programme was complemented by Cumbrian and Irish themed nights with raffle in aid of the RNLI. Grange Garden Society
At their February meeting Grange Garden Society members enjoyed a seasonal illustrated talk about snowdrops. The speaker, Pat Murphy, a gardener and Garden Committee member at Holehird, has a special interest in the genus, and gave a comprehensive and entertaining talk. We learned much of interest regarding the history, botany and propagation of snowdrops, not least, that an individual bulb has recently been sold on e-Bay for a three figure sum! April heralds the first of our monthly Spring/ Summer season of evening meetings, when our speaker Alan Clarke will give an illustrated talk entitled “Plant Hunting in SE Asia” on Friday 20th at 7.30pm. in the URC Hall, Kent’s Bank Road. Members are invited to bring along items of horticultural interest for the display table. Visitors are welcome. Grange Lions
At our last meeting we spent most of our time making preliminary arrangements for the next Grange Lions Bake Off to be held at the Victoria Hall on November 17th. Whilst our previous events have been enjoyed by all who participated, we are keen to increase the appeal of the event. Please look out for further details as the year progresses.
We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. The regular VHSG events at the hall are continuing to be successful, in both raising funds and providing entertainment for the community. In the coming months we are hoping to expand the demographics that these events are aimed at, with the hopes of running events for younger people and children. The Victoria Hall is, after all, the town hall for all residents of Grange and we hope future generations will benefit from it. The next project that VHSG will be working on is refurbishing the seating in the balcony. We are hoping to secure sponsors for each seat and further
details on how to sponsor a seat will be available soon. The VHSG committee is also looking to recruit some new members who may be able to take on more specific roles, particularly to help us apply for funding grants and tackle the updated data protection laws. Cartmel and District Flower Club held their monthly meeting at Cartmel village hall where they welcomed the guest arranger Ann Morgan, who delighted the packed audience with her varied and beautiful arrangements on the theme of “In the Pink”. Despite the recent cold weather Ann really made everyone feel that spring is definitely on its way. The next meeting will be on Monday, April 16th when the demonstrator will be Louise Jones from Wallasey and the theme will be “Inspired by …”. The Club will also hold a Coffee Morning in the United Reformed Church, Kents Bank Road, Grange from 10am – 12 noon on Saturday, May 5th in Aid of St Mary’s Hospice. Twelve members enjoyed a group visit to “Sister Act” and a meal in Thyme Out. A group of members and friends made a team of six for the Swimathon in Kendal swimming 127 lengths and raising money for ShelterBox. The Sensory garden is having quite a makeover with new paths thanks to grants from Walney Extension Community Fund, The Hadfield Trust, SLDC and Grange Town Council. This has greatly improved access, particularly for wheelchair users and those pushing prams. The Soroptimists have also put in decorative cobbles and have further plans for additional planting and improvements. Singing for Memory on Thursday mornings at Allithwaite Community Centre continues to be popular. We are very grateful for recent donations from individuals, Charity and Co, Upper Holker United Charities and Cartmel Priory which help support the sessions. If you or someone you know has problems with memory, dementia or problems with speech why not consider attending. It’s an opportunity to sing and socialise in a relaxed environment. Newton and Field Broughton WI held their meeting on 14th March, the talk was “”Blood Bikes, The intricacies of transporting vital blood supplies”. The talk gave an insight into the problems and rewards faced by the volunteers on
a daily basis. It was very much enjoyed by the members and question time carried on for some time. Next month the talk will be “Contemporary Rag Hooking” by Pam Bolton and will be held at Lindale Village Hall at 7.15pm on 11th April. All new members and visitors are welcome, entry £4.

At our recent meeting John Iveson spoke to us about his career in music. What a fascinating talk it turned out to be. As a young boy he was given the trombone to learn because the local brass band only had that instrument available and from there his career took off. From his local brass band to the Royal Northern College of Music to the London Philharmonic and Royal Opera House and more orchestras and jobs in between and now back “home” conducting Flookburgh Band. He told us many amusing stories about hiccups while performing and as a musical examiner. In April we will be having a cheese and wine evening with cheese and expert guidance from John Natlacen of Churchmouse Cheeses. Six members entered a team in the Cartmel Village Quiz in March and won the event. It all went down to a nail biting tie-breaker with another team and our answer to the distance between Manchester and Auckland turned out to be the closest. We will now be hosting the Quiz next year and only have to find 150 questions to ask! New members are very welcome at our meetings – contact Margaret on 36735 for more details. Our Junior section have continued to meet during the winter months and have been improving their skills in the coaching studio. They follow the Golf Foundation Passport Scheme covering all aspects of the game, skills development, fitness and skills for life. Most of the juniors who commenced the programme last year have now completed stage two of the three stages. Table tennis (thanks to Mike Jackson) proved a great success during the problems caused by the Beast from the East . Master chefs, Norrie and Julia, continue to prepare daily home made soups which revive the stalwart golfers, passing walkers and members of the tree clearing working parties. Greenkeepers John and Steve, assisted by Brian and “builder Mark”, continue projects to improve our course.
Socially ‘Dave Ford’s’ Rocking night had members singing and dancing the night away. Quiz nights are a great success as was St Patrick’s gala Bingo evening .

Dear Editor, My wife and I moved to Grangeover-Sands some seven years ago perhaps slightly influenced by my memories of spending several holidays here as a boy from 1949 onwards. My childhood home was in Bingley in Yorkshire and we would hop on the train in the town and come through to GoS, changing at Carnforth. It was the holiday haunt of many Bingley people who, like my father, pinched cuttings from the promenade gardens. Several have lived in GoS over the years and indeed still do. Our regular accommodation was Granville, owned by Mr & Mrs Shrigley who provided very good, full board hospitality. A rather strange but lasting memory is of playing seek the thimble, it must have been raining, and being reprimanded by Mr Shrigley for upturning an ashtray stand, thus tipping out the contents, in looking for the thimble. My other memory, as I became more "independent" and to escape the oldies, was to walk to Kents Bank, often in my grey pacamac, and then along the promenade through to GoS station and back to Granville and really little has changed along that route
Dear Editor, I have been visiting Grange-OverSands for more than 55 years and have seen the town in a variety of states of prosperity and otherwise. Yesterday after an absence of about three years I enjoyed a delightful visit helped by the lovely weather and the overall appearance of the town was a credit to all involved in its upkeep. The promenade gardens were beautiful and the wildlife sculptures added interest. The amount of work needing to be undertaken to present such an attractive stretch for all to enjoy is

The photograph shows myself on the sands roughly opposite Bailey Lane crossing with my bucket and spade, now I do believe that this photograph appeared in a Grange Yearbook. I believe the tower above my head would be Yewbarrow Lodge. I wonder how long it will be before sand castles are being built on a GoS beach again. My parents told the tale many times of father rescuing me from an incoming tide as I became isolated on a sand bank. Edward Scott commendable and it was good to see a relatively litter and dog dirt free area. Benches donated by families who have enjoyed times in the town provide opportunities to enjoy the views and the older looking benches with the squirrel details are beautiful. The ornamental gardens were in a good state as I have seen them in the past looking quite sad and neglected. On Monday 1st March, we called at Cartmel to visit the priory and do some food, wine and present shopping only to find no available parking. The surrounding streets were marked with double yellow lines as was the village square. The only legitimate parking was next to the Priory where fortunately one of the spaces with a one hour limit became available. As we had travelled a long distance we decided to visit the Priory and shop elsewhere. Total spend in Cartmel £5. We then went on to hawkshead to shop and eat and found pretty much the same thing. There are plenty of Lakeland villages, towns and farm shops etc that provide

plans. I asked the man conducting the event if it was going to be a Tesco but he declined to answer. Compare this less-than-frank response to the long debate that Booth’s had at both the sites in the town where it wanted to open a store. We are all free to shop wherever we like of course and I choose to do most of my weekly shopping at local family businesses, the co-op and spar. Perhaps such well-respected local firms such as Fletcher’s and Higginson’s should re-launch themselves and get some free publicity when a councillor cuts the ribbon. John Church, St Paul's Church and Grange Singers. After suffering a stroke Eve was persuaded to move to a nursing home near Kirkcudbright in South West Scotland to be nearer her family and it was there that she passed away peacefully. Yours, David Binks
Dear Editor, Having very recently learned of the death of Eve Baynes, a truly delightful lady who graced the stage with Grange Drama over a number of years, we look back on some of her most memorable appearances at both Victoria Hall and the Cumbria Grand. Perhaps like many of us, readers remember her remarkable ability for characterisation and how she played an extensive range of parts in productions with both Flookburgh and Cartmel groups as well as Grange. Three of her performances particularly spring to mind. Who could forget her Madame Arcati in ‘Blithe Spirit’, the Mother Superior in ‘Letter from The General’ and in portraying royalty, HM Queen Mary, mother of Edward VIII, in ‘Crown Matrimonial’. We remember her wicked sense of humour, never malicious and how she brought a sense of fun along with her to rehearsal but always combined with a dedicated approach to delivering

I went to Sister Act recently and it was an extremely good show. So much work, backstage, musically and rehearsing had gone into it - it was really a fantastic result. This was in the Victoria Hall, without which no shows, events, plays etc. would take place in Grange. If we lose this venue, so many groups would find it hard to continue.
Our Town Council must find a way, with the help of the Victoria Hall Support Group, to keep this Hall part of our community, as the funding from SLDC finishes next year. Please do not let it become yet another empty building in our town,

There are some fabulous community groups who will be contributing this time such as the Chestnut Community group who manage the various school playgrounds in the town. An interesting group on the music page are the tuneless choir. The idea is to sing like no-one is watching, so with gusto. Outside In are running an article this month too - they provide indoor play spaces for youngsters. We have a few sports articles of interest - namely water polo and walking netball plus updates from various local clubs from fencing to cycling and canoeing. In this issue we go behind the scenes of a few festivals coming up in Ulverston; its easy to forget that what you see is just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath lies months of effort, often by unpaid volunteers, and feats of organisation. Ulverston Now wanted to take a peek behind the scenes and asked some of those involved with the upcoming WalkFest and PrintFest to share what putting a festival together can involve.
