How to apply for an affordable property in Grange and District

Letter from the Editor

The Affordable Housing schemes are progressing well in Grange and Kents Bank, and Grange Now and local councillors are being asked: “How do we apply for one?”. It is hoped that the Berners scheme will be completed by the end of June. Properties for affordable rent at the Berners and Over Sands View developments will be advertised through Cumbria Choice www.cumbriachoice.org.uk. Cumbria Choice is a choice based lettings scheme that enables applicants to bid for properties that they are interested in when they are advertised but you do need to be registered. Priority for housing is awarded through a 'Banding' system that places people in one of five bands according to their housing needs. Applicants for Berners and Over Sands View will have to have a local connection. The local area is defined as Grange and the surrounding parishes and the connection to the area includes a range of criteria such as - having a permanent job in the area, having lived here for three or more years, attended school in the area or the need to care for or to be cared for by someone living in the area. The first four affordable houses for sale at Over sands View have been advertised in the Westmorland Gazette with the next three coming up in phase 2 next year. Eligibility for these properties is assessed by the District

Thursday 11th - Sunday 14th June is the launch weekend for the Morecambe Bay Cycle Way and the inaugural ride of the route. On Friday the 12th, riders will be passing through Cartmel on their way to Grange. Then on the Saturday, the cyclists travel from Grange to Silverdale via Levens and Arnside. As we go to press, the route is set to pass through Grange town centre only. It remains to be seen if the promenade will be used as part of the route at a later date.

A good response has come from the last two issues being delivered to Arnside. In fact we are now looking for deliverers in that area so it is likely to become permanent, particularly if we can attract some Arnside advertisers. Grange Now is a free community newspaper that survives by including paid for adverts. If you wish to promote your business to local residents why not give it a try.

In the 7th May general election the Conservative party achieved a majority victory – the win was perhaps not a surprise but the margin certainly was. Politics aside the outcome was received well by investment markets, investors and business alike. Investment markets hate uncertainty and with the Conservatives at the helm it provides greater stability since we already know their policies and plans with the next term largely a continuation of the last one. The Conservatives have suggested they will introduce an increased inheritance tax allowance which for couples could provide a joint allowance of £1 million. To do this there may be an additional £175,000 allowance each which relates specifically to property which would take the combined allowance up to £1 million. Other than this headline statement no further details are held and therefore we await with interest exactly how this might work in practice. The party has also suggested that for individuals earning above £150,000 the

maximum annual amount that can be paid into pensions may be restricted from £40,000 to £10,000. The headline “too rich to need a pension” stood out. Again, we await further details in due course. It would seem interest rates are set for a further sustained period at very low levels with little pressure on the Monetary Policy Committee to increase rates at this point.

Inevitably there will be new rules and regulations along the way but at least we have a good broad understanding of the frameworks that will apply for this next term.

Does all our recycling go into one container?

Following a number of complaints this month from residents who claim they have seen all the recycling containers being emptied into the same collection wagon, we contacted South Lakeland District Council for confirmation that this is not the case. We received this response from their spokesman: “All recyclables collected by our contractors have to be separated otherwise the processing stations won’t accept the load, as it would be ‘contaminated’, so it would not be in anyone’s commercial interest to mix up the recyclables. “We are provided with extensive documentation from the contractors and the processing stations, including weighbridge tickets, to verify that the loads are delivered correctly and how much is collected; and we would re-assure people using our recycling banks that their paper, card, cans and plastic is recycled through the proper channels and that we have not had any reports that recyclable materials have been rejected by the processing stations. However, if a resident witnesses any suspicious activity at our recycling banks, we would ask them to contact us with as much information as possible so that we can investigate further.’’

Newly elected There are some new faces on Grange Town Council following the recent election, and also some familiar ones. Former Mayor, Tricia Thomas has been re-elected for Grange North along with new Councillors, Ann Walmsley, Judith Shapland and Martin Ingle. For Grange South there was re-election success for former Council leader Tom Harvey

and Councillor Ron Shapland who will work alongside newly elected councillors, Tracey Hathorn and William Woods.

At the first Town Council meeting on Monday 18th May, Councillor William Woods became Council Leader (Chair) with Councillor Ron Shapland voted on as his Deputy and Civic Mayor. The next town council meeting will take place in Victoria Hall at 7pm on Monday 8th June. Congratulations to them all.

Last year’s Edwardian Festival proved to be a huge success and the hard working committee behind the event are hoping for an even better day this year. The big red bus will once again be seen ferrying people around the town and with free parking on Berners Close car park, and free rides on the red bus, there’s no reason not to go down to Park Road Gardens and join in the fun. Organisers promise lots of new stalls and entertainment, including a new Bear Hunt! With daylong entertainment from the bandstand, Punch & Judy, miniature train rides, fabulous costumes, wonderful food and plenty of entertainment for the little ones, all that’s needed now is the weather - let’s hope the sun shines. Entry for children is free when accompanied by an adult. Entrance for adults is only £2.50. Saturday 13th June in Park Road Gardens from 10am - 4pm. Free car parking

A Country in need

Newby Bridge resident, Alan Oatway, was in Nepal, hoping to complete a trek through a remote and rarely visited rural valley called Rolwaling when the first quake hit. He is now home, safe, but visibly shocked by all he has seen. This is his eyewitness account of what happened.

Mid morning on 25th April 2015, my two companions and I arrived in the village of Simigaon, Nepal. We had climbed over 2000ft from the valley below, and to permit proper acclimatisation we were going to stay for the rest of the day and overnight. This was a village of narrow terraced fields hewn from the hillside, with houses scattered across the slope, and with no road access. We briefly looked at the brand new school, built with the proceeds of twelve years’ fundraising, and sporting a red ribbon across its doors in readiness for a grand Opening Ceremony that afternoon. We also saw the Gompa, their equivalent of a church, before checking into the lodge. What next? I so nearly decided to lie down for a rest, but decided instead to take some photographs. As I stepped outside, the step itself seemed a bit wobbly, and then as I

stepped down, the ground itself was no better. Quickly, the increasing violence of the rocking, and the accompanying noise, left no doubt that this was an earthquake. People nearby me were flung to the ground, so I went down on all fours. At this point, a nearer noise from behind caused me to turn, to witness “our” lodge collapsing into the byre underneath. Taking a rest would most likely have cost me my life. Strong and unpredictable movements accompanied by incredible roaring noises from within the earth, and awesome landslide noises from nearby. Eventually the tremors subsided. Many landslides could be seen pouring down into the valley we had left, but the first priority was to account for everyone. Of my companions, Oliver had been doing some washing and was fine. Mike, on the other hand, had chosen to take a shower in a stone structure about

6ft by 3. At first, he had thought the village children might be playing games with him, but in time the vibrations threw the door open and he fell out, just as the stone building collapsed to the ground. Where he landed was moving too, and he was thrown down to the next terrace, some 10 feet below, where he landed in a bed of Himalayan nettles. These have an even worse sting than our own. Our Sherpa scuttled around on all fours to check on us, and was able to re-unite Mike with his underwear: in retrospect this part of the event gave us much amusement as can be imagined, but Mike’s escape was amongst the luckiest in this village. It was apparent right away that this was a huge earthquake. For those who remember the Coniston event of December 2010, this one had a destructive power 4 million times greater, and within a matter of minutes it had raised the entire Kathmandu valley by 1 metre. Our onward route was completely out of the question, and the way we had come was impassable. We stayed in Simigaon for 5 days, and our overwhelming memory is of the dignity, resilience and humanity of the villagers, who had lost their homes, and in the case of the lodges, their livelihoods too. Yet they were all unfailingly cheerful, considerate of the needs of strangers like us in their midst, and they began picking up the pieces of their lives without a murmur of complaint. Their reaction to the destruction of their school was one of gratitude that the ‘quake had taken the school then, and not when the 52 children had started the following day.

With a second earthquake hitting this already devastated land, Nepal really is a country in crisis and in need of our help.

Elections, whether they are local or national, are always a nervous time for politicians. I am not ashamed to say that I had quite a few butterflies during the run up to May 7th this year. So seeing the votes pile up in stacks on the floor of Lakeland Leisure Centre during the count in Kendal was a massive relief. I had spent almost all of my time in the five weeks of the election out knocking on doors and the response I got was quite positive but until you actually see the votes you cannot relax.

But, to be honest, most of my conversations were with fairly unfriendly Conservative ministers during the coalition and my first five years as your MP were spent dealing with

We will endeavour to do what we can to improve the situation but it really comes down to parents who come to school in a vehicle to be aware of where and how they park. If you feel you cannot see around your car when parked then a child will be doubly in danger. I just ask all parents to be careful and if in doubt please do not park in that position.

Conservative Councillors agreed that there will be a continued need for strong scrutiny in Children’s Services, and that the Safeguarding Improvement Board will be expected to keep the Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Board well informed of progress. The Conservative group have also stressed the importance of an independent governance review of the Corporate Parenting Panel, to be carried out by auditors outside of the County Council. They recognised the need for a change in Cabinet in order to ensure that the tackling of serious failures in Children’s Services can be effective.

Giving children a chance

A team from Boxes of Hope, Cumbria has returned from a visit to Tinca Village School in Romania. They kindly sent Grange Now this report: Although Christmas shoeboxes are our main priority, we are able to support this wonderful little school with surplus money from the shoeboxes, and from individual and group donations which we receive throughout the year. Shoeboxes give tremendous pleasure, but education is the way forward for these children who live in such adverse conditions. Tinca School is run almost entirely

on charitable funding, through our partner charity People to People Foundation, Oradea. The school is state accredited, and teaches the national curriculum. It has room for 175 of the 900 children in the village - the others will probably remain illiterate. Recently, the first group "graduated" and 18 of the 22 children are now attending secondary school on a regular basis. That is a measure of the incredible success of the school, with its inspiring teachers. We spent several hours at the school, and treated all the

children to small chocolate Easter eggs The weather was good enough for some outdoor games, and everyone loved doing the Hokey Cokey, with happy, excited children contributing to a rousing chorus. There were a few children new to the school, who appeared to be on the sidelines, but we got them to join in, and their faces lit up as they started to feel involved. The school is attracting enough funding from various charities to be able to increase to 8 classes next year, an extra 25 children. In addition, a new project is starting - "Second Chance" - to give lessons to 25 older children who have missed out earlier. However, money is always an issue, and Boxes of Hope is extending its sponsorship programme. For £10 a month or more, for a minimum of one year, you can contribute to the education of children who would otherwise probably remain unable to read and write. Education will help them to fulfil their potential in life .... it will give them a chance. Outgoing Mayor’s Report My last outing as Mayor was with the Rotary Club of Grange over Sands at their 68th Charter Dinner at the Netherwood Hotel. This formal dinner was an excellent evening meeting interesting people and hearing about some of the amazing things that Rotary International does for charities, not only in the United Kingdom but worldwide.

I have greatly enjoyed the privilege of being your Civic Mayor for the past year and would like to thank all the organisations and people who have invited me to share their events throughout the year. Meeting you all and being a part of the town in this way has been amazing. Thank you all. Since the last Town Council meeting there have obviously been huge changes not only nationally but also locally. I would like to welcome new Councillors, Martin Ingle, Judith Shapland, Bill Woods, Anne Walmsley and Tracy Hathorn. I hope you all enjoy your new role and I look forward to working with you.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the outgoing councillors for all their hard work over the last few years. We will miss your enthusiasm and expertise, and we will also miss you. Thank you for what you have done and I wish you well for the future.

PLANS for a 35-minute hovercraft service between Furness and Blackpool have taken a significant step forward. Private company Hovercraft Services UK is behind the project to connect South Cumbria with the Fylde coast. The idea was first devised in 2004, but following a period of testing and sea trials, the delayed project is in its final detailed design and feasibility stage. The initial route would link Blackpool and Southport, with Blackpool-Barrow and Blackpool-Liverpool routes to be added. It would cost £25 for a return ticket from Barrow to Blackpool, travelling at 45mph. The number of services would depend on demand, but there would be a minimum of three a day. The project was discussed during a cross-party meeting in parliament, with Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock present among four North West MPs. Hovercraft Services UK is an off-shoot of the longestablished Walton’s Coaches, near Preston. The project has been drawn-up to provide “fast,

reliable, and environmentally sustainable transport” between key North West coastal destinations “not currently served in as an efficient way as they could be by road and rail links”. Commuter services would form the “core demand”, but it would be open for leisure and tourist trade. Passengers would travel on an 84-passenger-capacity AP1-88 hovercraft, which has four engines and is capable of year-round use. Pete Walton, Hovercraft Services UK managing director, said: “I’ve been banging the drum for eight years and it’s taken a while to get to this point. But now the MPs are getting involved, it does make a big difference, so I’m excited. “In terms of Barrow, there’s BAE, BNFL, the Energy Coast – when you think of everything the area has got going for it, it’s going to need different sorts of transportation. It takes so long to get around everywhere for people at these coastal places, this would be a lot quicker. When you think about it logically, it makes a tremendous amount of sense.”

The Butterflies of Brown Robin.

Although a small reserve, Brown Robin has a varied landscape, allowing habitats for a range of butterflies, from woodland glades and rides to open wildflower meadows.

High Brown fritillary

Abundantly seen are Tortoiseshell, Speckled wood, and as I write this, Orange tips are laying eggs on Cuckoo flower and Garlic mustard. Also look out for Meadow brown, Comma, Common blue, Red admiral, Painted lady and Brimstone, which can be seen throughout the year if the weather permits. Some of the less common butterflies on the reserve include Small copper, Dark green fritillary, Wall brown, Ringlet, Grayling, Gatekeeper and Dingy skipper. One important species falls within “BAP” (Biodiversity action plan), meaning it is in decline nationally and therefore action has to be taken to conserve the species. This is the High Brown fritillary which lay their eggs on Violets. Some of you may remember the coppicing taking place in various areas around and in Grange. Coppicing opens the canopy and let’s light in the ground flora, thus

allowing Violets to flourish. As a result of this work, Brown Robin had its first High Brown last year for the first time in many, many years. So we must keep the momentum going and carry on this vital work or our butterflies will once again go into decline. Latest; The first Swift arrived over Brown Robin on the 6th May and I will be counting their traditional nest sites as last year. To look out for;

Possible Marbled white butterfly, as one was reported locally. Dingy skipper, Dark green fritillary, Six-spot burnet moths and possible spotted flycatcher near the old barn. The idea is to find points on a map so it is orienteering by bike. Don't be put off if you are no Bradley Wiggins as the event is aimed at all abilities.

Maps are provided and the events, which all take place on country lanes, start from 5.30 - 7p.m. There is a small entry fee (all profits go to charity) and more details can be found at bmbo.org.uk. So if you fancy some fun and to try something different, why not give it a go?

Morecambe Bay will host a four-day bicycle extravaganza from 11-14 June for local people to celebrate the opening of a new long distance cycle route around the Bay.

Everyone is welcome to join an inaugural cycle ride through the 100-mile Bay Cycle Way from Walney Island to Glasson Dock. The new path includes many traffic-free sections and is aimed at families and leisure Telephone – who want to go at their own pace to explore the cyclists distinctive culture, wildlife and food of the area. Organisers are appealing for volunteers to help lead family bicycle rides on and around the new path, run cycle activities and stalls and join in final celebrations at Glasson Dock, near Lancaster on 14 June. There will be a series of led rides which are free, but with limited places. Anyone can join the launch and receive maps and information when it starts at Walney Island to cycle along all or a section of the route, and enjoy the attractions and events to open the new route. The signed path will link existing traffic-free routes and quiet lanes and lead visitors through the distinctive culture, wildlife and food of the area, including Gleaston Water Mill, Ulverston, Humphrey Head, Grange–overSands, Levens Hall, Arnside and Silverdale AONB, Carnforth, Morecambe, and Lancaster. The route can be done either in stages as day trips or as part of a longer visit that will uncover the secrets of the Bay’s stunning land and seascape in an inspiring natural environment. ‘Buzzing’ about my new hobby

The chance to try something completely different is a treat and that is exactly what I got from a weekend's beekeeping course at 'BeeEd' in the Lyth valley. Julia and Martin took us through the basics from anatomy and life cycles through to feeding and care. Then it was time to get suited and protected, ready for some practical hands on experience. There aren't many things you can do which demand your total attention, and where you effectively have no opportunity to be distracted. It's impossible to be distracted by a mobile phone while holding 3,000 bees in your hands. We learnt that bees can be trained within minutes to identify explosives and once trained can be very accurate. They work to co-exist in a way that is inspiring with their collective industry, but also brutal in dispatching non performers or not required. Aside from the training and teaching, the weekend was also memorable for the food, which was terrific. Bee Ed is a not-for-profit business started in 2010 to provide information and education about pollinators, particularly bees. They run courses, give talks, visit schools and attend open days and are based

100 years of the WI

This year marks the Centenary year for the Women’s Institute (WI). The WI was formed during the First World War with the aim of encouraging women to become more involved in producing food.

To celebrate the centenary year there are a number of celebratory events planned including a lunch which took place on 28th January at the Netherwood Hotel and which was attended by 180 people. April saw the ‘Let’s Connect’ with venues throughout Cumbria for members to meet. At the end of May, a special centenary marquee will be erected at Holker Garden Festival which will also feature a Honda car emblazoned with the WI

Vintage on the Prom

Arnside Village is stepping back in time, vintage style, for the third year running. On Saturday 20th June, from 10.30 until 4.30pm the village of Arnside will adopt a vintage theme, and everyone is invited to take part.

Flooks 4 Youth Junior Club restarted after a long break on 30th April with a bumper attendance of 26 new members.

The Junior Youth Club had to close last year as the funding for staffing was withdrawn and the Steering Committee has been working hard liaising with various agencies, raising funding, setting up procedures and checks and recruiting 2 very able youth leaders (Tiffany & Becky).

Adult Learner’s Week (13th to 19th June) is an opportunity to learn how to use a Tablet, Laptop or a Computer in the Library. County Councillor Wearing has contributed funding from his CCC Local Members Funding to support the purchase of several new Tablets for use in Grange Library and we hope to have them in the Library by this week. If you want to give a Tablet a try, book a free session with one of our staff or our new Computer Volunteers. You can also book to learn something new on one of our Computers or on your own Tablet or Laptop if you bring it in. Cumbria Libraries now have free E-books available to borrow. Any Library Member can sign up with their Library Card and Password and take out a range of books. Look on the County Council website under Libraries and download your selection.

Looking for some holiday reading that you don’t have to bring back or perhaps a factual book to keep forever? We will be holding a Book Sale for the first 2 weeks of June to sell both withdrawn library books and donations we are unable to add to library stock. The funds raised will purchase our own tea urn to be used for Grange Library events. If you’re finding the print in books getting smaller, why not try a Large Print book? This month we will receive some new Large Print books from Ulverscroft, as “Anyone can read it”.

This month we will have an exhibition until 26th June entitled Allithwaite Boys which shares the stories of local men and the part they played in the First World War. This was previously displayed in Allithwaite Church and a video of the original exhibition and launch event will be shown in the Library during June. On Monday 1st June Thelma, our Macmillan Volunteer, will be available in the library to provide advice on the information available including Macmillan booklets and library books in the Macmillan collection, from 12 noon to 2 pm.

Young Writers’ Poetry Competition

The British Isles have more miles of coast than India. Almost 750 of those are in the care of the National Trust, protected as part of its Neptune Coastline Campaign. Author Patrick Barkham spent over a year exploring this coast.

ART & MUSIC The phrase, ‘picturesque setting’ is perhaps over used but in this instance it is an apt description of the gorgeous, converted shed which is home to artist, Janice McGloine and her designer daughter, Helen Scambler. Nestled at the back of a little courtyard in the gardens of Wolf House, in the beautiful village of Silverdale, this gallery is more than worth a visit. Wolf House Studio is home to a range of tasteful gifts, handpainted crafts and stunning artwork. On the Sunday morning I visited, I found Janice at work on an original painting of a delightful old house, a commission, done in acrylics on canvas. A self-taught artist she has been painting for many years, and professionally since 1993. Janice doesn’t seem to mind the interruption and invites me into the cosy room at the back of the gallery where she paints in her distinctive, quirky style. Janice is warm and friendly and clearly loves what she does. “I’m living the dream”, she tells me, “My husband Steve and I having been visiting this area for years. As a family, we enjoyed many caravan holidays in Silverdale with our children and have always loved the area. Wolf House Gallery was always a special place to visit. and when they offered me an unused shed in the garden as a studio, I couldn't believe my luck. Now not only am I doing what I love, I also share the gallery and work with my daughter Helen. It really is a dream come true” Helen is the creator behind the Boo Boo and the Bear label, which boasts a range of highly original cards, prints and gifts. She told me: “With over 10 years working as a surface pattern designer, I started my company Boo Boo and the Bear in 2012 after the birth of my

Following on from the resounding success of the opera concert last month, Grange Concert Club hope this month’s concert, on Friday 5th June, brings the same response. Performing this time are: Trio Isimsiz (which means ‘without a name’ in Turkish). They will perform Haydn's piano trio no.43 in c major, James Macmillan's Piano trio: 14 Little Pictures, and Beethoven's Piano Trio in B flat "The Archduke". Elite Dance promises quite a show Every two years, Cark based Elite School of Dance treats us to a fantastic show of non-stop, energetic dance routines. Currently in its 11th year, the Trail has gone from strength to strength, and now boasts more local exhibitors than ever before. An astounding number of artists practice their craft in this corner of Morecambe Bay. This year the Trail welcomes a new group to Silverdale village; The Lancs and Lakes Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers will be providing a host of hands on demonstration and informative talks. Also new for this year, visitors are encouraged to take part in ‘Draw and Explore’ a theme which allows the public to create their very own art work as they go round and experience the Trail. The event has over 80 exhibitors spread across 32 venues, including eight key sites. Everyone from painters to potters and stone carvers to blacksmiths are represented in the Trail. This exciting three day exhibition is open on Friday 26 June between 1 pm and 8 pm and then Saturday 27 June and Sunday 28 June from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. A very full Church experienced an emotional funeral service for Tanya Robinson. Her sisters and parents had faced the death of a dearly loved sister and daughter with courage and faith and the congregation responded accordingly.

This year has already seen two major changes to the small Church which now meets once a month on a Sunday in Grange Primary School. Firstly, John and Lesley Robinson who were leading lights within the Church, followed God's calling and have left to work with a Church in Canada. Secondly Brian Birks who lead the leadership team and preached regularly has retired to hopefully spend a more leisurely time with his wife Veronica, probably seeking out more old railways around Britain! We wish both couples every blessing in the changes ahead. Meantime, David and Sarah Tomison will be leading and co-ordinating the church. This can seem a daunting prospect but we know along with all our Church members that “the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. St Paul’s, Grange

The popularity of the midweek communion service at St Paul’s continues. Starting at 10.00 am each Wednesday, a spoken Eucharist is celebrated in the Lady Chapel. Visitors are warmly welcomed to this service and to join with us afterwards in fellowship over coffee and biscuits in the Meeting Room. Events at St Paul’s during the town’s Edwardian Festival weekend include an Edwardian Musical Evening presented by the Lancaster Singers on Saturday 13th June at 7.30 pm.

The architect’s plans for the re-ordering of St Paul’s will be unveiled on the church stall at the Edwardian Festival and we

look forward to receiving your comments and opinions. Final plans will be available later in the year at an Open Meeting for congregation and parishioners. This is an exciting time for the Parish church as we move forward with developing a more multi-functional building whilst still retaining the beauty and character of the original architecture. It is now possible to put an end to the rumours and speculation concerning the Parish Hall as it has been confirmed that the Hall will be offered for sale by auction on Friday 12th June at 2.30 pm in the Victoria Hall.

The Ladies Group continue to enjoy themselves in their monthly get-together. All very mysterious to the Parish Priest!! Len Gee gave an interesting account to the Men's Group on Life from Banking to Teaching and after. United Reformed Church On Wednesday, 13th May a most enjoyable time was had at the Women’s Guild Afternoon Tea. It was a full house and very friendly.

St Mary’s, Allithwaite On behalf of the Rotary Club of Grange over Sands, host Lew Brookes presented a cheque for £630 as a contribution to support a hygiene and sanitation programme.

In the UK we take clean water for granted, but in sub-Saharan Africa, it is a luxury many people still do not have. 1 in 5 Malawians live without access to clean water and often have to travel long distances to visit contaminated open wells. Pump Aid is a small International Non Government Organisation focused on improving the lives of some of the most impoverished communities in the world by providing two of lives’ basic needs; access to safe water and a decent toilet. Pump Aid’s main technology is a modified rope and washer pump, which is low cost, easily maintained

sustainable technology. Pump Aid works mostly with communities that are too small or too remote to be good candidates for more costly and complex water technologies provided by larger Non Government Organisations. This year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the building of the Church, the old Vicarage, Allithwaite School and the School House in 1865 – all thanks to the generosity of Miss Mary Lambert who lived at Boarbank and Abbot Hall. Various events are being planned throughout the year to mark this significant occasion, the first being a celebratory concert with the Lakes Gospel Choir last month and in June we are looking forward to a visit from the Bishop of Penrith for a special service of thanksgiving and celebration on Sunday, June 14th at 10.45 am. The previous day we are planning a celebration tea in church, followed by a presentation from Pat Rowland entitled The Mary Lambert Story, to which all are welcome. Other events later in the year will include a concert with the New English Orchestra and Singers in October, a presentation of the lives of the Allithwaite Boys who died in the first world war in November, and a Christmas concert with the Levens Choir in December. SCHOOL REPORTS

Could MP’s learn a thing or two from the youngsters! Following the recent elections, both national and local, Grange Now decided to start right at the beginning and ask the youngest councillors in our district their thoughts and views. The theme running through all the school councils is exactly the same. Candidates put themselves forward, they tell their peers what they will do if elected, and then the successful candidates are voted on and they do what they said they were going to do. Simple, isn’t it?

Allithwaite Primary School

Grange Primary School Grange pupils elect children from Y2 to Y6 as their representatives. Kodi (Y6) said he became a councillor to help people in the local area. Grange school council have been very proactive in the area tackling issues such as: ‘dangerous’ parking around school. School Councillors raised their concerns about parking at a meeting of Grange Town Council. A walking bus, which is steadily growing in numbers, has also been organised by them. Sean (Y2) said they got all the children to hand in toys to take to the Children’s Ward at Furness General.

The School Council at Allithwaite have, in recent years, visited both The Houses of Parliament in London and the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Their system is two councillors from each year group. Following a training session the children have now appointed a Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary etc. When asked why they had wanted to become a Councillor they all said: “to make the school a better place and to make a better playground.”

During their term of office they have repainted playhouse and all the benches in the playground; they have built a mud kitchen and the outdoor space has been cleaned and spruced up.

Flookburgh Primary School

Lindale Primary School Lindale school councillors are also elected by their peers and have a representative from every year group including Reception. They recently got together with Allithwaite School Council and received training from David Bone on how to run a council and the different roles which have to be undertaken. They now have appointed roles such as Chair, Treasurer, Secretary etc. The current school council have achieved many things including organising a fundraising day for comic relief; major changes to the playground, including the purchase of a climbing frame and and basketball hoop - all voted for by the rest of the pupils. They are now working on raising funds for a new CD player.

Cartmel Priory School

The School Council at Flookburgh have also achieved their set targets. Some of their councillors told Grange Now why they wanted to be on the council in the first place: Lily (Y1) said: “I like being in the school council because it means I can make a change to the school. I have been thinking about how we can change our team points system ready for our next meeting.” While Kian (Y3) told us: “ I like being in school council because I can make things better for everyone. I am helping Jack look at school dinners for the next meeting.” Luke and Tom, both Y6 said: “Being in school council is good because you get to voice your own opinion and do what we think is best for the school. Being a part of school council makes you feel like a politician.”

Why did you put yourself forward for school council? I thought it would be a really good way of making a positive contribution to the school and a chance to be a voice for the students of the school to help make the changes that the students wanted. We work closely with the school’s Eco Committee who are working hard to raise awareness on recycling and with the funding raised through Bags2Schools recently we have purchased a number of recycling bins which are located in the school dining room. School Council representatives are involved in the selection process on staff interviews and have been involved in the recruitment of Attainment Leader, Teaching Assistants, Cover Supervisor and an English Teacher. We have a school news team who are working on developing a digital newsletter for the TV screens around school.

Allithwaite School

We are celebrating our 150th year anniversary this year. Snowy owls have been sharing the Hungry Caterpillar story and are really enjoying playing with the new mud kitchen. Tawny Owls have finished their SATS and are looking forward to an ice cream in the park as a special treat. Barn Owls enjoyed their trip to Leighton Moss on the train and

had great fun: pond dipping, bird watched and had a great time on the bug hunt. We are getting excited about our residential to Castle Head in June and looking forward to canoeing, climbing and bushcraft.

Cartmel Primary School

Eagle Owls have finished SATS and are very animated about their reports on dragons. Eagle owls will be going to York for their residential this year. We have Nursery places available from September please contact school for more information 015395 32144.

Acting Head Jo Proctor told Grange Now: “A group of children have acted as our school council to help appoint two teachers for the autumn term. They were able to talk to the rest of the school about what kind of things they wanted to find out about a new teacher. The group asked the candidates questions such as “Do you play any sport?”. The group then shared the information with staff and governors. We have appointed staff following the children’s feedback.”

Den Day. This is about gaining sponsorship to transform the sofa, back garden or cardboard box (or School!) into a superden and spending the day or night in it. The money we raise could help make life better for children in the world’s poorest countries eg providing vital shelter.

‘Runners Up’ for Cartmel Priory in Schools Competition

Each year, BAE Systems, Barrow, organise a ‘University Challenge’ style competition for local schools called ‘Top of the Form’. The competition is based on the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The team from Cartmel Priory School excelled themselves this year beating tough competition from Dowdales and Ulverston Victoria High Schools to progress through to the final against Kirkbie Kendal School which was held at Coronation Hall, Ulverston, on 20 April. In preparation for the final, the team of Susanne, Joe, Tom and Izzie visited Barrow where they received a presentation on the work of BAE Systems from graduates of the company and a tour of the site. This included a look inside the Devonshire Dock Hall, where the team saw submarines in various stages of construction. Teams from both schools then had to build a model submarine that would sink, dive and achieve neutral buoyancy, using only a plastic drinks bottle, straws and some balloons, as well as plenty of sticky tape! The finished model was tested in the final

Sara Holroyd, the daughter of Derek Jones-Darlington, is a Froebel tutor and has been visiting Kolkata (Calcutta) regularly to advise and train teachers in primary schools. One of the principles of Froebel education is to recognise the importance of play in a child's development and learning, and the seven schools involved in Sara’s project have been provided

with resources such as sticks and peas, tops, mini blocks, tesselating shapes, books and story bags. Sarah is returning to India in October, and is collecting the coloured milk bottle tops (and also the wooden stirrers from Costa Coffee). I am so glad that the behaviour of charities is, at last, coming under the “microscope”. I worked for many years, for the Children’s Handicap Committee and we collected c. £250,000 annually, back in the sixties. Our admin fees were approximately 4.5% of that figure. None of us were paid, in fact we didn’t even ask for travelling expenses. Our meetings were held in a small banqueting suite provided it was not required for normal use, at no expense. Personally, I object to being badgered and I have stopped, having told them that I would do so, if they didn’t stop wasting my donations on mail shots and phone calls, all donations to charities. I now only give to charities which I know will use the money I give them for the purpose it was given. One of the charities which I formerly donated to appointed an agency in NEW YORK!!! and I received a phone call badgering me to set up a standing order. They now get nothing because I looked up on the internet and found that only approximately 10% gets through to those it is intended for. The only difference between charities and big businesses now is that what’s left after all the expenses are taken out of the sales goes to those in need, in the one and in the other it is called profit. Support for the blind Launch of new Vision Support Centre. A new service has been set up to support people with sight problems in South Cumbria.

The Vision Support Centre is run by the Barrow Blind Society from its headquarters at Cavendish Street in Barrow. People with sight loss can drop in to the new centre for advice on equipment to help with everyday life. A team of Welfare Officers is also based at the centre to offer information and advice, home visits and referrals to other services. Carl Hodge, the Society’s Chief Executive,

says, “Recently, we consulted our members about the services they want now and in the future. We found that there is a need for a specialist centre and our new service provides specific support and information for local blind and partially sighted people. The population is living longer and so there is an increased prevalence of sight loss in the community – our aim is to promote independent living through our new service.” Anyone experiencing sight loss can drop in to the new Vision Support Centre 67/69 Cavendish St, Barrow LA14 1QD which is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 5.00pm, Saturday 9.30am to 4.30pm or call 01229 820698.

With vision, the Lido can have a future. Fill in the pool area with the rubble from most of the buildings, which have long been neglected. Use the levelled area as a water splash area (like Happy Mount Park at Morecambe) for the fine warmer months. Then in the winter the area can be used for ice skating (like Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh)

The remaining buildings could be franchised out, for a restaurant, to a local firm, and maybe a heritage centre and craft workshops. The frontage could be bespoke railings to allow viewing and keep out vandalism. SLDC are going to sell the old nursery land at the bottom of Berners car park, from which there will be a new footpath directly to Clare House bridge. The sale of this valuable land must be ring fenced to provide the funds to regenerate the Lido. The new town council along with our District Councillors must drive SLDC into action and secure these funds. The time has come for Grange's voice to be heard. Other residents and visitors will have their views

which need to be voiced. By working together the Lido site has a future. Adult Education

We are now in the final stages of the brochure and have lots of exciting new classes to offer from September. Much of this year’s provision has been completed, albeit that we continue with all our exercise classes and are running a limited range over the summer month off. We still have one Saturday workshop left to deliver which is: Pilates Masterclass – suitable for those who have done 6 months. Run by Sue Hotchkiss on 13/06 at Cartmel Primary School. What’s New from September 2015 We have a much more expansive range of languages which include some day time provision and a broader range of choices to include for the first time ESOL- English for Speakers of Other languages, Polish and German language and culture. We are trying to use a greater range of outreach facilities so will be running a Sewing School and some art Saturday workshops at High Newton Village Hall. We are running a wide range of counselling courses at Levels 2, 3 and Level 4 diploma. Our range of Saturday workshops is expansive and includes subjects such as Keeping older brains active; Using emotional intelligence and Coping with Depression, Stress and Health anxiety, all being run by Dr David Walton a clinical psychologist with vast experience. Mindfulness is extremely topical at present and we have a variety of topics addressing this issue including mindful eating, mindful living, mindfulness for everyone and a basic introduction to mindfulness for children. Each month l will endeavour to give you a “sneak preview” which will hopefully encourage you to sign up and support locally delivered classes, which are all of an extremely high calibre. The only other news relates to changes in funding for the service. From 1 August 2015 the automatic 20% discount on course fees for over 60s will stop. The 50% discount for those on means tested benefits, of any age, will remain. The removal of the over 60s discount will mean on average around a £1.50 per week increase for a typical 2 hour, 10 session course for participants not on means tested benefits. This change is part of a broader shift in government funding for adult education services towards targeted work with disadvantaged adults. However, we do still retain subsidised education in Cumbria, which is a positive as many county councils in other areas of the country have increased fees much more significantly than here, or in some cases, moved to full cost recovery. In most instances people will now fall into the full cost subsidised category when they book their course. We have retained the full fee subsidised category with no change in the cost for this year, to offset some of the aforementioned changes, so we represent excellent value for money but need YOUR SUPPORT in keeping this provision open as we need to maintain enrolment levels at a sensible level for viability. Do you care? The Care Act 2014 is being introduced in two stages. The second stage is the one that has grabbed the headlines with changes, which are pretty meaningless, on what you have to pay towards your care. That part comes into effect in April 2016 and there are plans you need to make to get ready for it if you or a relative are in care. I will come back to that in a later article. The first stage came in to effect in April 2015 . One big difference is the extra help given to unpaid carers who are now entitled to the same degree of help from the Local Authority as those they care for. I have seen many family members, often spouses or partners the same age as the person they are caring for, under huge mental and physical pressure, sometimes makes making themselves ill in giving the care that their partner needs. As a carer you are now entitled to a carer’s assessment from the Local Authority) regardless of the amount or type of care you provide, your means or your level of need for support. You can have an assessment whether or not the person you care for has had a community care assessment/needs assessment, or if the local council have decided they are not eligible for support. You don’t have to live with the person you are looking after or be caring fulltime to have the assessment. You may be juggling work and care which can have a massive impact on your life. It is your choice about whether the person you care for is present or not. You can have a joint assessment and you can have someone there to support you. I was in a liaison group last week, organised by Age UK, and was amazed how much support there is in our area for the elderly, disabled and/or vulnerable and their unpaid carers. Carers Support Cumbria are hosting a Carers Summit at the Forum in Barrow in Furness on the 10th of June. There will be workshops aimed at carers with practical help and assistance, a Q and A session, a real-life story from a carer’s viewpoint and a marketplace of exhibitors with information and advice for you. If you do care, you should go. I will see you there. I like to know as much as I can about the care and services available so that I can pass the details on to you if I come to see you about your Will or related planning. As well as protecting your assets it is important to protect you. It is not all about the money. If you have not been before, the Forum is straight opposite Barrow Town Hall. It is easy to get to on the train from Grange. It is a 10 minute walk or a short taxi ride from Barrow train station. I will be doing two more articles in future editions of Grange Now to follow up on the effects of the Care Act on you or your family/friends and the care you might receive in future and how the rules about what you have to pay have changed.

Competition results to report are: Mens - Midweek Medal - 15th April was won by M Taylor net 67. Winner of the Stableford on 18th April was R Gill with 42 points, The Tetley Walker Cup on 25th April was won by P Eastwood net 61 and the winners of the Medal played on 2nd May were, 1st Div W Barrington net 65, 2nd Div D Gibson, 3rd Div C King with net 68. The Mixed Jubilee Cup played on 4th May was won by A & M Calvert with 57.2 points. Grange Soroptimists The club held their AGM on April 27th and retiring President Janice Carrick congratulated the club on a very successful 60th year. This has included setting up Singing for the Brain to improve the lives of dementia sufferers, fundraising for Mary’s Meals enabling more children in Africa to receive an education and the installation of the Town Crest which was achieved with the support of local businesses and individuals. Our new President Cathy Lubelska was installed. This year’s programme promises to be a mixture of activities including a public meeting about dementia in October. The plaque listing major donors is now in place on the Town Crest and it was noted that the delay was due to a welcome late donation. Cartmel Art Society The Annual General Meeting was held in the village hall on 29th April. New Officers and committee members were elected and an exciting new programme for 2015/16 was issued.

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. After a lovely Jacob’s Join buffet members were treated to an acrylic painting demonstration by Kendal artist Thuline de Cock who is well known for her painting of cows. During her entertaining and informative demonstration she gave us lots of tips and ideas on composition, drawing and colour mixes.

Newton & Field Broughton WI The May meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI was well attended. There was a considerable amount of business to get through. The main item was the Resolution “Failing to care - assessment of need in longterm care”. Sue Needham explained this very comprehensively to members, several of whom contributed to the discussion which followed. When the vote was taken by a show of hands the Resolution was not passed. It was felt that the content was not made clear enough. A break for tea and cakes followed this. Then member, Christine Squire, gave a talk on Bees and Beekeeping. She had a slideshow to accompany the talk and had also brought several pieces of equipment which she uses as a beekeeper. Several members asked interesting questions throughout the talk. We were all much more knowledgeable about the life of bees and beekeeping at the end of the evening. The Bring and Buy stall to raise funds for ACWW and the W.I. did well.

June’s meeting will be a talk on ‘A History of Kendal’ by Trevor Hughes. It will be at Lindale Village Hall on Wednesday June 10th starting at 7.30pm.

Rotary Club of Grange The Rotary Club of Grange over Sands held a very enjoyable Charter on Wednesday 6th May. President Colin Wilkinson welcomed 79 guests from Rotary Clubs in the District as well as the Mayor of Grange, Tricia Thomas, and Roger Mason, the District Governor of Rotary in Britain and Ireland. The Speaker was the Reverend Martin Jayne who gave a humorous talk on his life. The Club has been very active over the last months and donated £500.00 to the local Mind Organisation from a Flag Day held at Easter. They have also donated £630.00 to purchase an Elephant Pump to provide a community with clean water. £250.00 was sent to Aquabox following the hurricane in Vanuatu. The club is currently anxiously waiting for news from Nepal as a number of local clubs have been working to help a remote village build a new school and medical facilities.

Grange Forum Our 68th season of the Forum begins on Tuesday 6th October at Abbot Hall Hotel. The subject of our talk by Lee Kitchingman will be ‘Svalbard - a journey to the Arctic’. May has provided a varied and interesting programme of outings: May 21st - Lunch at Kendal College where two choices of prelunch activities were offered, a walk around Old Kendal or a recital at the College by a talented flautist, by name, David Edmonds, accompanied by Charles Edmondson on piano. May 28th - ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ at Manchester Opera House.

Cartmel & District Flower Club We are delighted to report our fundraising fashion show held on May 6th in aid of North West Air Ambulance was a great success. We had excellent support from all who attended. The raffle included a £50 voucher given by "Colours" many flower arrangements and other prizes totalling over twenty. On arrival everyone enjoyed a welcome drink and then the show began. The company "Colours" treated us to an excellent show, the M C and models made everyone feel at ease all being very helpful and amusing. As the show ended we were invited to purchase the garments and many didn't need to be asked twice to indulge and find a bargain. We all thoroughly enjoyed a great evening and finally raised £900 for the very worthy charity North West Air Ambulance.

North Lonsdale Tennis Club (Grange) We hosted two Easter Holiday Half Day Tennis Camps for South Lakes Juniors and Jon Griffin’s coaching team. These were a great success with Primary School Children – partially due to the Easter Egg prizes on offer! In the meantime our Club’s 3 x 45 minute junior sessions take place every Thursday afternoon from 3.45 to 6.00pm. You don’t have to be a member but please book with David Houghton on 015395 34933 or 07443 469273. We finished a creditable 6th in the Winter Veteran’s League with our best point score ever. The Summer League matches have started. The Men’s team were promoted to Division 1 this season and are finding it hard, losing to Kirkby Stephen and Windermere, but enjoying the competitive tennis. The Ladies lost their first match against Lancaster in wintery conditions. The Mixed Team won their first match against Sedbergh.

The Fun & Games Social Event in April went well, with Frank Jordan’s organised tennis and Jacob’s Join lunch. Frank has umpired at Wimbledon and coached for many years.

Arnside & Arnside Knott WI At the May meeting of Arnside and Arnside Knott WI members voted for Resolution No.4 Failing to care, assessment of need in long time care. Three members joined the "Lets Connect" event at Endmoor. Two members are going to The Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Seven members are attending the A.G.M. live screening at the Brewery, Kendal. The speaker for the evening was Gordon Fletcher who told of his visit to Greenland. His photo presentation of the landscape, seascape and icebergs was spectacular.

Grange PROBUS Club On May 11th, Peter Stas gave a talk entitled: Driving - high risk or not. Peter had been a police driving instructor. He began by telling the story - of the driving test and particularly the more modern additions. He explained the statistics of motoring accidents and the fact that there had been a steady decrease mainly due to new technology. He followed this with some useful advice on driving more safely and concluded by telling about the county scheme for checking and improving the driving of over 65’s PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome. Grange Lions At our meeting in April we voted to send a donation to earthquake hit Nepal.....this will be sent via the Lions Club of Nepal so we can be sure it reaches it's proper destination and is put to good use.

A good start was made at Prom Art selling our Grand Summer raffle tickets and hopefully this will continue throughout the summer as this is one of our big fundraisers for St Mary's Hospice and other local charities. Our weekly raffle at The Cumbria Grand hotel also continues to be well supported by the management and guests. Plans are also underway for the Lion's stall at Grange's Edwardian festival in June. At the end of April David and Helen at The Pastures held a social evening to introduce some prospective new members to us all... plenty of food and a good quiz and everyone enjoyed themselves. Finally members and friends enjoyed a really good meal at Kendal college one evening. The students there did a splendid job as usual.

Grange WI Greg Robinson recently gave a very moving talk about young women in Ethiopia who often give birth at an early age. Because of this they have difficult long labours often resulting in stillborn children and an obstetric fistula (a tear in the wall of the bladder) which leads to incontinence. The women are often cast out by their families and village and lead a life of abject misery and low self-esteem. In 1975 two doctors – Reginald and Catherine Hamlin set up a hospital to help women with this condition. Greg recounted numerous success stories. There are now several hospitals in Ethiopia which perform operations and train women as midwives so they can help in the villages. Witherslack WI Sarah Bradley chaired the May meeting of 14 members and after local business introduced Noreen Leese who had come along to inform us about the NFWI resolution to be decided upon at the AGM. Next month, June 9th, Sally Farrington will give a talk about tea tasting.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society The May meeting, delayed because of the General Election, welcomed back Howard Martin to give a second lecture on the Great War. His subject this time was the story of Geoffrey Hardy, a soldier whose name is on the Cartmel War Memorial. Geoffrey, a Quaker, was born in Banbury and he married into a local Quaker family thus giving him a connection to Cartmel. He married Mabel Isaac, the grand-daughter of W R Nash of Pit Farm, Cartmel and The Mount, Cark on 5 March 1916 whilst on 44 hours’ leave. Howard’s research uncovered information about Geoffrey’s early life and his military career. He joined the West Yorkshire Field Artillery (Howitzer) Brigade and was involved in the battle for Bullecourt between April and May 1917. Many of his letters home were quoted. He survived the battles but died from wounds inflicted when ammunition exploded in a fire involving a howitzer. He died on 27 May 1917 aged 27.

Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies Section) As I anticipated, the Tina Turner Tribute on April 24th was a great success. Golf competitions are in full swing now. We had a Bronze League Match v Carus Green at home which we won. 8 ladies qualified for the Cavendish Trophy and the 1st round of the Edna Martland Trophy was won by Lady Captain, Ronnie Hall. We also won our Bronze League match at home to Sedbergh. Medal 2 was won by Ronnie Hall on a card count back with Ellie Woodburn. Our last competition, Bronze League v Carus Green away which was narrowly lost.

Needless to say we all enjoyed it and there was plenty of opportunity to try costumes and hats afterwards. Arnside Sailing Club We are offering a chance to try out sailing on Saturday 20th June between 2.15pm and 4.15 pm in the afternoon. The event is part of Arnside Vintage on the Prom day.

Grange Freemasons Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 (founded 1877) introduced new members at the Regular Meetings held on the second Fridays in April and May with the traditional ceremonies of Initiation in the Masonic Hall Hampsfell Road Grange.

Freemasons donate annually through their Lodge subscription to The Freemasons’ Grand Charity. The news that the Grand Charity had donated £50,000 to the Red Cross in response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal at the end of April was received and approved by the members. The Worshipful Master Alan Telford appealed to the members to donate for victims of the earthquake as part of a coordinated Masonic response towards search and rescue and relief efforts. A collection was taken at the May meeting and the sum of £150 was raised and has been sent to the Grand Charity. Lower Holker Village Hall May’s 200 club winners: £40.00, 36, Vi Hadwin; £25.00, 44, Fiona Whittaker; £15.00, 137; Tony Roberts; £10.00, 55, Barbara Shaw. The concert by the Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band on Saturday 25th April was a sell-out event, and all the available seats were taken. The performance was excellent and everyone seemed to enjoy the night, including the band. The evening raised £790.00 and after paying the band we were left with £540.00 which will go towards the upkeep of the hall. The Band will be asked back for next year.

On Saturday 8th August we will be having a “One Man Paul Robeson Tribute Performance”. This is an excellent show which has been performed all around the country to rave reviews. And lastly our annual Craft Fair will be held in the autumn. We have rooms available to rent at a reasonable cost. If anyone would like to join the committee they would be very welcome. With the competition season now in full swing at the Fell and the grass starting to grow we could just do with the weather warming up a touch; here is a summary of our results. On Sunday 26th April we played for the Harry Leach Trophy this was won by Ken Bramley with a 63net, Best Gross that day went to Daryl Lomas with 76. Our next competition was the Millennium Trophy played on Sunday 10th May which was won by Gary Broadhurst with 62net. Best Gross on the day was Graham Shepherd with 75.

The Try Out Day is aimed at giving non sailors an opportunity to sail. You do not need any experience to join in the fun. We held a similar event last year taking out a wide range of people including families with children. We will be operating from the slipway at the end of Promenade just before Ashmeadow. We will provide buoyancy aids and the club's safety boat will be operating, though you should come prepared to get wet." As well as sailing the club offers a programme of social and musical events in our historic clubhouse in the Old Customs House. The club offers both social and full membership so you do not need to sail to join. The Club has one of the lowest membership fees in the area. Grange Ramblers Wednesday 15th April 10 walkers walked from Bowness through town to Post Knott then Brant Fell, followed the Dales Way through Cleatbarrow to School Knott via High Lickbarrow and Helm Farm to finish off with a cafe stop in Bowness. Despite a dull start to the day, we had good views from Brant Fell and School Knott of both the lake and the fells, including the Langdales. In warm sunny conditions on 23rd April, six walkers walked from Settle via Langcliffe to Stainforth Beck and Catrigg Force to Jubilee and Victoria caves, returning to Settle passing Attermire Scar and Warren Knotts. The 7 mile limestone landscapes with spectacular outcrops led by Tony Harrison. On 6th May 7 ramblers set off in fine sunny weather walk the Winster valley, starting from Linthwaite Hotel passed Lindeth Farm before dropping down to Barker Knott and onto Bellman Ground. After a brief stop to admire views, the walk passed around Rosthwaite Farm to reach the delightful view point on Rosthwaite Heights. Following a Lunch break continued down to Ghyll Head Tarn before turning back over pleasant open pastures and woodland to return via High House and Lindeth Farm to the start. Leader- Alec Bottomley.

Grange Golf Club - Mens Section

The AGM in April was well attended and endorsed the election of Roger Handley as Vice Chairman. The business meeting was followed by an excellent presentation by Ken Taylor entitled ‘Trail ruts, badlands and geysers’, a journey through the history and landscape of the American mid-west. It was a stimulating and engaging session. Brian Lewis manages the U3A’s gardening section on the prom and has recently planted cherry trees in recognition of the 15th anniversary. During the last month the birdwatching group had a successful trip to Barbondale, the cycling group completed the ‘Preston Wheel’, the walking groups went to Kentmere and the Lyth Valley and Bob Lear organised an indoor games evening. Forthcoming social events include a car-rally/ quiz plus supper in June. The celebration of our 15th anniversary will include a trainWindermere boat trip-train and lunch event in June, a tea dance in a local hotel in July and an audio-visual display in the library in September. These activities together with a Chester Zoo trip and a Scottish holiday organised for the ‘Out and About’ group ensure that members have busy summer ahead. Allithwaite Playground Committee The Allithwaite AGM 2015 will take place in Mary Lambert Hall (Allithwaite School) on Monday 15th June at 8pm. All Welcome! The Committee is looking for new members to ensure the playground is maintained, kept safe and above all, kept open! They are looking for a new Secretary as well as other interesting roles. No experience is needed and it won’t take up too much of your time. A great way to meet new people whilst making a positive contribution to the Allithwaite village and ensuring the children can continue enjoying the playground. The Bloom Group are delighted to announce that the 2015 Open Gardens Day will take place on Sunday 12th July, from 10am to 5pm. A spokesperson for the group told Grange Now: “Hopefully we will be blessed with good weather, and even if Andy Murray gets to the Wimbledon final, we will still attract a good number of visitors!” The funds raised from the Open Gardens are used to regenerate borders around Grange, and is the Bloom Group’s main source of funding. This year there will be at least 12 gardens open to visitors. These are all situated in a small area of Grange, off Grange Fell Road, Ashmount Road, Eden Mount Road and Charney Road. Tickets will be available from the Tourist Information Centre, from the end of May.

NSPCC volunteers distribute £950

In the April edition of Grange Now we reported that the former Holker and Cartmel Valley NSPCC volunteers raised a massive £950 with their annual clothes and clutter sale. They are distributing the proceeds as follows: Local NSPCC; the playgrounds at Allithwaite, Cark, Cartmel and Flookburgh moor Lane; St Mary’s Hospice at Home; Flookburgh new churchyard; Lower Holker Village Hall and the Connie and Joe Fund. The committee would like to offer huge thanks once again to all helpers and supporters.
