School destroyed in seconds

11-14 June saw the opening of a new long distance cycle route around Morecambe Bay.

The new 81-mile route links existing traffic-free routes and quiet lanes and leads visitors through the distinctive culture, wildlife and food of the area, including Gleaston Water Mill, Ulverston, Humphrey Head, Grange–over-Sands, Levens Hall, Arnside, Carnforth, Morecambe, and Lancaster.

INSET: The School house before

MAIN: All that's left

It took 12 years to raise money to build a school. It was destroyed in seconds, before a single lesson had been taught. The Nepalese people have shown amazing strength and courage since the devastating earthquake which destroyed their country. They pick themselves up and carry on and following their example Alan Oatway, from Newby Bridge, who was near the school when the earthquake hit is doing the same. He has already started fundraising to rebuild the school. You too can help, by attending a coffee morning on Friday 10th July, at Grange

Methodist Hall on Kents Bank Road, between 10am and 12noon. Come along end enjoy a coffee, biscuit/cake, a raffle, book stall and buy a few cakes to take home with you. All the money raised will be taken to Simigaon by Alan, when he returns in October.

An organiser of the event told Grange Now: I would like people to be assured that all the money will go directly to the village. Please come along and support us.” Donations of cakes, books or raffle prizes would be greatly appreciated. Please contact: Judi Bulley 59367

Arnside sea front looked fabulous, decked out with bunting galore, and trays of cakes and tea for the riders. Local ride leader, Steve Keating, from Grange reported back from day 3 of the ride:

“I joined the route at Grange over Sands, where approximately 40 cyclists gathered for the third day’s ride to Silverdale, via

Witherslack and Arnside. The weather held as we set off in two groups to make numbers more manageable.

Cycling down the back of the golf course the motto of ‘a view at virtually every corner’ certainly rang true. A brew at Witherslack was particularly inviting. Onward to Levens and then uphill (the conversation went a bit quiet here), but it picked up on the downhill under the A590, then some incredibly, quiet roads across the estuary and into Arnside, where we were warmly welcomed by the locals. Then after chips and a drink, and the VIEW, it was off to RSPB Leighton Moss for a look around (oh and cake). What a great day, if only they were all like this.”

Cumbria in Bloom dates announced This year's judging will take place on Wednesday 15th July between 9.30am and 12.30pm. In preparation for judging, the group has replanted the tubs in the town, and will be working to make the gardens look their best. Everyone can help get the town ready for judging day by ensuring the streets are free of litter and weeds, and businesses can help by putting up floral displays and keeping them well watered. The group is grateful to all who help, especially with watering and maintaining the tubs. This year the Promenade Gardens and Veterans Garden are entered in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’, and both Grange Primary School and the Pre School group, have entered

the schools award and Thornleigh Hotel and Hampsfell House Hotel are entered in the Tourism award.

The Grange in Bloom judges will be touring Grange towards the end of July to judge the floral displays/ gardens at businesses, hotels, B&B’s , churches and residential apartments/homes. The Group is always looking for new volunteers – gardening skills are not essential. Contact Jan Tomlinson 36919 if you would like to join them.

Grange now | JULY 2015 - Next deadline 17th July

Recent pension changes have transformed how individuals are able to take their pension savings and created greater flexibility for savers. The fundamental principles of planning for life after work remain the same, however, a huge psychological barrier has now been removed and savers have the reassurance that their pension pots are no longer locked away. This will boost their appeal as a means of saving for retirement. The increased flexibility coupled with greater opportunity to pass on accumulated wealth to the next generation will change thinking and behavior. Whilst the pensions ‘Annual Allowance’ has reduced over recent years, the scope to fund up to £40,000 per tax year and utilise the ‘Carry Forward’ procedure to make use of any unused ‘Annual Allowance’ from the previous three tax years provides great scope for pension funding and the tax advantages that accompany this. In addition there is also the option of ISA’s to compliment pensions when building a retirement portfolio. Therefore, now is an ideal time to review your retirement planning, including pension contributions and ISA funding. As a business owner it may be beneficial to review the way in which you extract income and profits from the business. In the bigger retirement picture the increased flexibility requires a shift away from the conventional wisdom that retirement income comes from a pension, rainy day money is

provided by an ISA, and other savings are earmarked as an inheritance for the next generation. Rather than attaching a fixed purpose to each separate savings pot, it may be more efficient to consider how savings as a whole can be used to match income and capital needs in retirement and for individuals to consider how to take income tax-efficiently and leave the greatest inheritance for their loved ones. Whilst the increased flexibility is very much welcomed this does bring greater complexity to retirement planning and you may feel that now is a good time to delegate the responsibility to a Financial Planner to obtain that specialist advice.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Big turnout for the 22nd Edwardian Festival Despite the dire weather forecast, the rain stayed away and it was pleasantly warm in Park Road Gardens. Many made a real effort, and looked resplendent in dresses and suits from the period. New for this year was the Edwardian Bear trail with a bear being placed in all the shops around Grange prior to the festival. Unfortunately the trail stopped at the Flower Stop on Main Street. Owner of the business, Carol told Grange Now: “the trail stopped with us because we inadvertently sold the bear!” Laughing Carol added: “I hastned to add that we have now replaced it!” Music from Blowjangles, Grange School Choir, Main Line Jazz and Allithwaite Primary Ukulele players helped to add to the festival atmosphere.

Heritage Lottery fund meet SLDC over Lido BBC news recently reported on the amount of money the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded towards rejuvenating lidos around the country. Our article last month prompted readers to get in touch with their own ideas for our lido, including turning it into a theatre similar to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. Grange Now got in touch with HLF to find out about applying for grants and Laura Bates, Communications Manager for North East, North West, South East and South West told us: “The Heritage Lottery Fund is aware of plans to develop the lido at Grangeover-Sands and our development team has met with representatives from South Lakeland District Council and local partners to discuss the ideas being considered. We offered advice on HLFs grant programmes and discussed the significant challenge around finding a sustainable end use for the lido. We will continue to offer advice as the plans progress.” Heartened by this news we contacted South Lakeland District Council for their response to HLF’s quote and a spokesman told us: “We have completed the consultation and will be considering what may be feasible options for the Lido, with a view to firming up recommendations to take to the council’s Cabinet.

Part of the process has involved discussions with the Heritage Lottery Fund about the ideas which came forward out of that consultation process.

Advice from funding bodies will now be taken into account when drawing up the recommendations to Cabinet. The earliest that any recommendations would go to Cabinet for consideration would be August.’’ SLDC and Grange Town Councillor, Tom Harvey would like to stress: “Although it may appear nothing has been happening, we've been working hard over the past couple of years pulling together reports and recommendations from a number of sources on the options available around the Lido. This includes specialist leisure providers, not for profit groups and commercial organisations all of which have real world experience and expertise in this area.

This has given us a solid evidence base on what may be possible both in terms of capital investment to develop the site and also, and probably more importantly, on the business cases for the ongoing running of some sort of facility. We need to remember that Grange is a small town, and places like the splash park at Happy Mount Park cost taxpayers a significant six figure sum every year to subsidise.

"It is of course a hugely complicated and emotional issue for many residents and the top and bottom is that there is no easy answer. It’s an isolated area, with no parking or easy access and for any facility, whatever it may become, to stand on its own two feet it needs a significant income and that means people need to be able to get there. I'll be pressing for this to come before SLDC Cabinet shortly so residents have a clear message on what is and as importantly what is not a viable proposition to move forwards"

Work to start on the Prom

We are delighted to report that Network Rail will undertake necessary maintenance works to the Prom this Summer. We cannot report actual timings at the moment but we believe that they are due to start in July. It is inevitable that these works will cause disruption and inconvenience to prom users, but that said many have complained for a long time about the state of the prom with some saying the remedial works needed to the prom are far more urgent and important than the lido. It would be ideal, of course, if works could be carried out around the dates of prom art to ensure that this wonderful event goes ahead.

The Countess supports Children’s charities and services nationally, and the hospice were delighted she chose to visit them. The Countess was greeted at the hospice by Janet Ferguson, the Chief Executive and Gillian Ward, Head of Care, who began the presentation proceedings of the Countess to the children, their families, staff and volunteers. During her visit Her Royal Highness met and spoke with many of the children, young adults, families, nurses and volunteers from Jigsaw and Eden Valley Hospice. Barbara and Reg Brown, tireless Jigsaw fundraising and awareness volunteers, from Grange-over-Sands, had been invited to be presented to the Countess of Wessex, for their voluntary work in the South of the County. They were delighted to have been invited to such a very special occasion and to have the great honour of meeting Her Royal Highness.

'Charming and natural'

Barbara said, ‘It was a wonderful afternoon, when the Countess of Wessex visited Jigsaw, we were so thrilled to have been invited and honoured to actually meet her. She was very charming and natural, putting everyone at their ease, including Reg and I, encouraging and supporting all the people that she met."

73rd hole was a welcome sight! On Sunday 21st June, in true English summer weather of howling gales and lashing rain, four golfers set off at 4.45 in the morning to play 72 holes for charity. Gary Johnston, Mark Johnston, Will Macdonald and Liam Chalmers finished the challenge at 7.15pm and, feeling wet and tired but in good spirits,

they happily headed towards the 73rd hole. There was nearly a hole in one with the last shot of the day from Will Macdonald, it went in, but he was playing 3 off the tee! There’s still time to donate at either Johnston's of Grange or on the just giving page www.justgiving.com/ Gary-Johnston8

Mrs Mollie Points (nee Potter) has recently celebrated her centenary. She tells the story of looking through job advertisements whilst at college in Cambridge in 1938, and asking her friends “Has anybody heard of Ulverston, Lancashire? There is a job for me there”. Born in Nottinghamshire she travelled northwards by train expecting dark, dirty cotton mills, smoke and a population wearing clogs and was swept away by the beauty of crossing the Arnside viaduct to a very special place with hills and sea. Offered the English teacher’s job at Ulverston Grammar school, she met her husband to be, Malcolm Points, the biology master. She and Malcolm brought up 4 girls. As the children grew she returned to full time teaching and moved from the grammar school to Victoria Secondary Modern school as English teacher and remained there whilst it became the Ulverston Victoria High school. She has taught English to generations of Ulverston and district families. Mollie has many stories of being recognised years after her retirement for example by the anaesthetist at

This month we are highlighting two walks which will take place under the expert guidance of Queen’s Guide, Cedric Robinson MBE. The sands can be incredibly dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing and we would advise not going out on them without expert guidance and help. The first walk is for Boxes of Hope and will leave Arnside promenade on Saturday 8th August at 12noon. Will you be the first to spot the ‘Dynamic S’? Competition The competition is to find posters bearing a blue ‘S’ symbol (Dynamic S) and this symbol is the logo for Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland, a world-wide organisation working to improve the lives of women and girls.

There are 20 ‘Dynamic S’s to be found around the town: in shop windows, on noticeboards, some low down, some high up, and each one is numbered. Pick up an entry form (£1) from the Information Centre in the Victoria Hall or from any Soroptimist member, and just write where you found the ‘S’ next to its number on the list. All correct entries will be entered in a draw, and the winner will receive £20.

Grange Town Council scraps committees

The second full council meeting, since the recent elections, took place on Monday 8th June at Victoria Hall.

New council leader, Cllr Bill Woods, said during the meeting that he would like more transparency and would like to make it easier for residents to get in touch with their local councillor. Cllr Eric Morrell, newly elected district councillor, aims to set up monthly surgeries, but Cllr Tom Harvey is keen to point out that any residents with a concern to voice can contact any of the councillors and their problem/query will end up on the right desk. There were vociferous objections to the to a planning application to open a 7 days a week kebab/pizza parlour in Main Street. The applicant currently has a similar establishment in Bowness and would like to open another business in the former offices of Grange Now and the adjoining shop, which had been Paul’s butchers. Residents and neighbouring businesses complained about smells and the fact that there are currently 5 outlets serving food in that one corner of Grange alone. Cllr Tricia Thomas voiced concerns about schoolchildren getting off the bus and going straight into the takeaway and has stipulated that, should the application be passed, the takeaway should be closed between the hours of 3.30 and 4.30pm. Cllr Bill Woods then proposed an overhaul of how the council functions, suggesting that the committees are suspended and working parties formed, with all decisions being taken by full council. He has also suggested that, where possible, the working party meetings should be open to the public. The next Town Council surgery will be held at Grange Library on 11th July between 10am - 12 noon. Councillors Tricia Thomas and Tracy Hathorn will be there to hear your questions and concerns. The next full town council meeting will take place on Monday 13th July at 7pm at Victoria Hall.

Councillor Thomas raises over £1200 During her term in office as Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas, held several fundraising events to raise money for Diabetes UK and St Mary’s Hospice at Home. She managed to raise an impressive £1213.42. St Mary’s Hospice At Home were delighted to receive £610, which they said would just about cover their petrol for home visits, for a year. Tricia’s second charity, Diabetes UK, received a cheque on Wednesday 24th June. Tricia told us: “I chose Diabetes UK because I have Type 2 diabetes. The support the charity gives to people like myself, and particularly to families with children who

Getting kids out into the great outdoors

Grange Outdoor Nature Club (GONC) is starting it's third year of getting local kids out into the great wild outdoors. Ginny Harris from GONC told Grange Now: “We have done some amazing things over the years. We've built birds nests, charmed worms, made our own secret den. We've bashed the bracken in a great Lakeland space and seen a wildflower meadow grow in it's place. We got up early to hear the Dawn Chorus, stayed up late to hear bats echo-locate. We've found lizards and mushrooms, froglets and crabs. We survived a shock snowstorm, we've been muddy and damp.”

The group meet on the first Sunday of every month during term time, usually in the afternoon.

The activities are aimed at 7-11 year olds, but the whole family is welcome to join, and all children under the age of 7 must come with an adult. A donation of £1.50 per family is welcome. To find out where our next meeting will take place, you must be on the mailing list. Please drop a line to ginny.burnsfarm@ gmail.com

Five years ago Lower Allithwaite Parish Council decided to add an allotment site to its existing allotments which were part of the Parish Cottage garden. Ten plots of various sizes were added from part of the Parish Field. First come first served, we were allowed to choose our piece of green grass to turn into an allotment.

Most of the original tenants are still on site and over the past five years various styles have been established, some with raised beds some not, some gravel paths, some grass paths, large beds and small beds green houses on some but not on others but one thing is certain for all, it’s been hard graft, but worth it. From a large green patch to individual areas of dug over earth gradually increasing in size over the years, with shallow soil on limestone and picking out the stones has been a task in itself.

We have a small car park and a good water supply, what more could we ask for, a hut perhaps but that’s a no-no says the Parish Council so we just get on with doing what allotment holders do best, talk, sorry! grow things. After five years we are established and going great guns and like most allotment

holders we have ups and our downs with regards to crops, some fail on sweet corn others do great, carrots that’s another story and tatties we all seem to do well with those. From Pumpkins to parsnips or beans to broccoli it’s been a five years of fun and hard work and we enjoy every minute of it!!

And what of the future, more of the same for Allithwaite allotments. Our new neighbours the Community Orchard have

installed an apiary for bees, so things are looking good. We are taking advice on what flowers we can plant to help our new furry friends, so as someone said “every little helps” Many thanks to Steve Sim who has written this month’s piece on behalf of the Allithwaite Allotmenteers! fantastic day and we are so grateful to those that played a part in making it so special; everybody who performed, those who donated raffle prizes and cakes, the people who volunteered their time to help out, everybody who came to support the event and, of course, Rachel and Sian for making it happen.

doing extraordinary things

Following the phenomenal success of Joe and Connie Calling, Grange Now talked to the people who organised the whole event. Not a large group of people, or a firm of professional event planners, but two young local mums. Rachel Pocklington, a bubbly and outgoing hard working mum of one from Flookburgh heard about Connie and Joe Elson’s plight from a friend. Being a mum herself she felt sorry for the family, but rather than just empathise she wanted to do something to help. After contacting friend and fellow mum of one, Sian Hunter, they came up with the idea of putting on a fun day, along the lines of Kendal Calling, to raise funds and awareness for the family. Neither of them had organised an event before, or anything remotely like it, but they took to Facebook, to beg, borrow (but not steal), and they were delighted with the response. Offers of help came flooding in and within a few weeks they had acts such as Chuck Fish, The Hairy Buskers, Kev Kendal, Elite Dance and Dance Attick all offering to entertain on the day, for free.

the day. Rachel continued: “the day we got the marquee from Rusland Pool for only £350, was the day I thought, this is it. It’s really going to happen.” Sian joined in saying: “getting the marquee and then Bare Bones contacting us to say they could supply the stage and all the sound equipment for the day, were the real turning points.”

Thereafter offers of help and donations kept coming in. Rachel and Sian said the next thing that happened to help things along, was the article appearing in Grange Now. Rachel said: “I was going into businesses for raffle prizes, and to ask them to sponsor banners, and they were all saying yes straight away, saying that they’d seen the article in Grange Now and they wanted to help, and that in turn really helped us.”

The day of the event was, miraculously, warm and sunny and families started streaming through the gates. The community had taken the Elsons to their hearts, and they turned out in force.

Rachel and Sian laughed and told me: “There were a couple of moments when the nerves hit and we wondered, ‘what on earth are we doing?”, but they ploughed on and managed to pull off an amazing event which attracted around 1,000 people on

Nicola and Ian Elson, parents of Connie and Joe, told Grange Now: “Joe and Connie Calling was a

So far, Rachel and Sian have managed to raise a staggering £6,600 for the Connie and Joe fund, and have made a lot more people aware of this rare and terrible disease. Rachel and Sian are extraordinary in what they have managed to achieve, but try telling them that, and they will tell you they are just ordinary mums doing what anyone would have done.

ART & MUSIC Keith and Elizabeth both work from their home in Cark. Elizabeth has a studio under the house and Keith's domain is the double garage. Elizabeth has been exhibiting and selling her work since the mid nineties, starting with embroidery and other textile techniques, before moving on to books and mixed media. Keith has always worked in wood since being taught woodwork at secondary school but it is only since his retirement that he has begun to design, make and sell his own boxes and furniture. Elizabeth describes herself as a mixed media artist specialising in the creation of handmade books. Although some of the books are for practical use it is the intricate folded books which are intended for display as "artists' books" that are her real love. Her work uses a lot of recycled materials such as old books, maps, sheet music but also often incorporates her own photographs and prints. The printmaking is becoming increasingly important and is the area she wishes to develop. Keith makes a range of items from small boxes to chairs, tables and even a whole dining suite. He works very hard at making each piece individual whether it is a box or a piece of furniture but always keeps to simple lines. His latest development is a range of Shaker boxes. The design of these is American in origin but he is adding his own twist by using different combinations of woods. He also offers two day workshops which give two students at a time the opportunity to make a set of three boxes of their own. They both agree that one of the

FOOD & DRINK

Great food to go…

Summer for us, is all about being able to enjoy food wherever you are (outdoors preferably) This might be a barbecue in the back garden, a picnic at the beach, an ‘on the go’ lunch or party food that you can take to celebrate and share with friends and family. Higginsons Deli is a great place to stock up with all the essentials, from home-cooked sliced meats and English & continental

Celebrating the early summer harvest

As a means of describing the vegetables that are coming through at this time of year ‘Seasonal Stunners’ does the trick on the blackboards at Low Sizergh Barn.

Lancashire grown broad beans, so early in the season, are tender and soft, with a flavour that makes each pod a far better treat than any tube of sweets. Give them a couple of minutes in boiling water and their sweetness really develops. Serve with a knob of Winter Tarn unsalted creamery butter and there’s a flavour of summer that speaks of all the vegetable dazzlers that are still to come. Chef Paul in the Low Sizergh Barn kitchen has devised this special recipe to celebrate the arrival of the broad bean crop:

Ask in store for prices and more information.

If you literally want to grab food ‘on the go’, visit the Higginsons Take Out (just around the corner from the shop) with its fantastic selection of hot meals, freshly made sandwiches and salad boxes, home-made pizza slices, bacon /sausage buns, and a range of delicious cakes and tray bakes. Broad Bean, Crispy Bacon and Goats Cheese Bruschetta

It can be served as a starter, canapé or as part of a summer picnic and amply feeds a group of four. Method First blanche the beans in boiling salted water for a couple of minutes. While warm, remove the outer shell to reveal the dark green bean underneath. Dress with a little olive oil then leave to cool. Sauté the bacon in olive oil until crispy. Fold in the shallots, pepper and broad beans, then season. Toast the focaccia on both sides, quarter, then top each piece with the broad bean mix and crumble the goats cheese on top. Serve immediately or return to the grill. If you would like to serve the bruschetta as part of a picnic, store the topping and the toast separately and assemble when you dine.

SCHOOL REPORTS

Rotary present gifts to primary schools The retail cost of the dictionaries is in excess of £2000, and is provided by donations and fundraising. Children from schools in Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Grange, Leven Valley and Lindale are the lucky recipients. It is hoped to run a little competition for the children for the best thank you letter when all have been distributed.

As we come to the end of our Rotary year we have one of the most enjoyable tasks. President Colin Wilkinson and Youth Chair Ken Thompson made the first of 152 presentations of dictionaries to local schoolchildren in years 4 and 5.

Ian Nicol, Headteacher at Leven Valley Primary told Grange Now: “The Year 4 and 5 children were delighted to receive their dictionaries from Colin and Ken (from Grange Rotary) in an assembly last week. The dictionaries are intended to be kept and used at home to help children with their homework and studies in the coming years and will no doubt prove to be very useful. Many thanks to Grange Rotary on behalf of the children and families.”

Anyone for Tennis? Our Summer Fair was a great success on 5th June, it was very well attended and even the sun shone, eventually!

Well done to the children who took part in the tennis tournament at the Cumbria School Games in Carlisle last week. Hundreds of pupils from all over the region gathered at the Sands Centre before competing at sports grounds throughout Carlisle. The team came 6th which was a great achievement! We are also delighted to have won £200 of resources for school from Brightkidz in the Cumbria County Council Walk to School Week Competition. These are to use in our Walk to School Campaign. The remainder of the term promises to be just as busy with the Year 5 and 6 classes looking forward to their residential to Ullswater, where their programme of activities includes camping,

canoeing, ghyll scrambling etc. Our Sports Day is planned for 7th July (10thJuly as reserve day for bad weather!). The term ends on 17th July with our Leavers Service at St Paul’s Church to which all are welcome. This starts at 9.00am. We have Free Nursery Places available for 3 year olds from September, our sessions are from 8.55am to 11.55am Monday to Friday. Please email joanne@grange. cumbria.sch.uk for further details.

If you love books and a bargain, go long to the ‘Big Book Sale’ on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August at St. Peter’s, Field Broughton Parish Rooms.

We celebrated our 150th anniversary this month, the focus of which was a special Victorian day. We invited past pupils to join us for afternoon tea. We explored school photos dating back to 1903 and school register from 1865. Each pupil created felt leaves which contributed to a new banner for school. A special cake was ordered, and all the children received a special leather book mark as a reminder of the sesquicentennial. The weather stayed warm for our sports day, which was great for the children. We enjoyed a musical day with artist Ben Gates who delivered musical workshops,

Because we manage two centres, this is a large job so please bear with us as we try to ensure we have everything as up to date and accurate as we can. If you do spot a mistake, please tell us as we do try to ensure we eradicate them. We have tried to make it as user friendly as possible, with pictures to click on as well as subject headings on the main menu. There are numerous ways you can find the class(es) you are looking for, using the quick course finder, going to subject area or clicking on the “our courses” section.

enabling the children to compose music together using a whole range of recycled materials and found objects. Our community came together for our annual PTA Summer Fair which as usual, was supported fantastically, generating funds for the school. If all of that wasn’t exciting enough the children looked beyond themselves to raise funds for an Autism charity by taking part in Onesie Wednesday. Prior to these events our pupils, hosted, then visited, pupils from St Margaret's Primary in Whalley Range to enable both schools to develop friendships with children of contrasting communities, and to help one another appreciate our different cultures and backgrounds.

We also have an opportunity to run some new innovatory courses, entitled targeted community learning which are aimed at the most disadvantaged people who would not typically access these services. These classes will be FREE and are subject to eligibility criteria; hence we are looking for partners in the voluntary sector or charities to link up with to share resources and develop ideas. If you have any ideas/ initiatives which you wish to develop why not contact us on 015395 36323.

The office will officially shut for the summer on July 17th and re-open September 1st, but during the shutdown period, we will reply to emails and also come in and check the 24 hour answer machine so do carry on enrolling by post and email. Finally, we are desperately seeking a tutor to run our GCSE English course from late September 2015. If you are a qualified teacher and would be interested in fulfilling this role, please drop us an email on adulted@cartmelpriory.cumbria.gov.uk. Kind regards Jude, Carolyn and Debbie – The Adult Education team.

We have also combined the brochures for Ulverston and Cartmel, partly to save costs and it helps with the logistics of distribution. The brochure will last for the entire academic year, from September 1st through to July 2016. You will also receive a county wide publication late August which covers every centre across Cumbria and these advertise classes up to Christmas only.

Can you remember the Saturday in early June this year, when the wind was so strong, we thought the trees, now in full leaf, would be blown out of the ground? The next day, Sunday, was 'Praise on the Lake,' so we were wondering if it would even happen. The Sunday morning was wild, but then the weather improved. By evening it was perfect. It was the common opinion that, of the twelve years this event has taken place, this year, the weather was the best we have ever had.

Little & Caine Funeral Plans

Thinking about your funeral in advance gives you and your loved ones peace of mind The process of arranging a funeral can be deeply upsetting, as it marks the final tribute to a loved one. An increasing number of people now arrange their funerals in advance.

When it comes to funeral planning, paying in advance means you get the service you want, and your family are relieved of much of the financial strain that bereavement can so often bring, allowing them to come to terms with their grief without the added distress of making funeral arrangements.

Why set up a pre-paid plan? Award for woodland burial ground

A Cumbrian woodland burial ground has again received a seal of approval from the families of loved-ones who have been laid to rest within its natural setting.

Dalton Woodland Burial Ground, near Burtonin-Kendal, has won the ‘People’s Award’ for the Best Natural Burial Ground in the North of England & Scotland 2015 from the national charity - the Natural Death Centre, for the third year running Francis Mason-Hornby, owner of the Dalton Hall Estate, said: “We are very proud to receive this award again as it shows us that the families who have chosen our woodland burial ground are getting the service that they should be entitled to, in a peaceful and naturally beautiful setting.”

Dalton Natural Woodland Burial Ground is a 30acre triangular shaped plantation set in mature mixed woodland at the foot of Dalton Crags and is set at the heart of the Dalton Hall Estate. Burials at a natural burial site, such as Dalton Natural Woodland Burial Ground, can still incorporate a traditional funeral service in but it also opens up options for those people who have more secular beliefs. Since then she has served as elder, secretary, choir member, Sunday school teacher and as general inspirer within and outside the church where she was involved with Guiding and other choirs.

Then, on a pleasant Wednesday evening in June, we took a train to Arnside and 'supped' together at the chippie, before returning to Grange station later that night.

The last month has been a sad one with three funerals of much loved members of our congregation.

Then we heard of the death of Betty Fishwick, a local lass who served the church as Sunday school teacher, elder, Women’s Guild leader, and was active in the British Legion.

On the same day, Phyllis Over died. She had been a regular member of our congregation and the Women’s Guild since she came to live in the area about 10 years ago. These ladies will be much missed and we thank God for their lives and all they have contributed to our community, within and outside the Church. As the one who planned it, Joyce would have been pleased that the 40th Traveller’s Tales season is going ahead on Thursday evenings at 7.45pm. All welcome. Admission £3.50.

Win tickets to Magna Carta 800 This is your chance to win a day ticket worth £15 (2x U16s free) to the Magna Carta celebration. To enter, simply answer the three following questions.

Last month saw a surprise party for our retired leaders, Brian and Veronica Birks, who thought they were going out for a quiet meal!

St Mary’s

Grange Methodist

On June 14th the Bishop of Penrith preached at the morning service, reminding us that anniversaries are both a time for looking back when we remember with thanksgiving all that God has done through those who have served at St Mary’s over the decades and also a time for looking forward to what God is going to do in succeeding generations.

Congratulations and thanks to the young people of the district who took part in concert and to the volunteer collectors.

We have been celebrating the 150th anniversary since the church was first consecrated by the Bishop of Chester in June 1865.

On Sunday (5th July) at the morning meeting in Grange Primary School, we have a guest speaker, returning to his 'roots'. (Surprise)

The previous day we celebrated in true English tradition with tea and cake and this was followed by a fascinating presentation from Pat and Phil Rowland looking at the early history of St Mary’s, and in particular at the life and times of Mary Lambert who lived at Boarbank. It was through her generous bequest that the church, the school, schoolhouse and the Old Vicarage were built.

The following three Sundays will be held in homes where we will be listening to recorded talks on the book of Joshua from the late Arnold Bell of City Church, Sheffield.

Other events to mark this anniversary and details of these as well as information about the church services and its various other activities can be found on our website www.allithwaitechurch.org.uk.

Come and join us and find out more. Phone 83455 or see website hopechurch.org.uk for more details.

The annual door to door collection for Christian Aid and Grange Youth Theatre’s Annual Concert for Christian Aid raised almost £350.

There will be a social evening in July and August. Please see the noticeboard for details. The URC church and Grange Methodist Church are joining for worship on Sunday mornings, once a month. June 21st. the service was held at the URC church, with a very full congregation and the preacher was Rev Jo Rand, from the Methodist Church

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Following the 70th commemorations of the Normandy Landings, V.E. Day and Dunkirk, we will celebrate the ‘forgotten army’ of Burmah on VJ Day, August 15th. Though not widely heralded by media, services and parades will occur at St Martins in the Fields (Far East POWs) at the Cenotaph (Royal British Legion) and at Guildford Cathedral (Burma Star Chapel). In the Allithwaite/Flookburgh parishes we have at least one surviving Burma Star hero, and relatives of others who have died. For us, it is planned to hold a service at St Mary’s Church on a Sunday close to August 15th. If there are other holders of the Burma Star, or their relatives, among your readership they will be very welcome at St Mary’s, Allithwaite. Alternatively, I would love to hear from them through your column or directly at Bank Cottage, Allithwaite. (Dr) Richard Fell

Dear Editor,

I am delighted to have been re-elected and wanted to let you know what I am currently working on. In the community I am working on the community led plan, the questionnaire went out at the beginning of the year from the responses it was clear that the cleanliness of the streets is an issue for many residents. This information enabled the parish council to instruct the council to carry out a full street clean. We are still processing these questionnaires and will use the information to assist the community and their needs. Dog Fouling; where do I start? I know that most dog owners are responsible and do pick up. I am disturbed by the amount of dog dirt that is on the lanes, pavements, streets and hedge rows. It is illegal to allow your dog to foul anywhere in the open air and one day you will be caught! So please be considerate to your community and please PICK UP. There are many other community projects I am working on to help local businesses and to support different groups. If I can help I will. Gillian Gardner 015395 59461 email, gilliangardner@me.com

Dear Editor,

I am writing as the new Lib-Dem councillor for Grange North to thank all the people in the ward for electing me as your councillor for the next four years. I promise to serve the interests of the ward and of the town as a whole. Some very unpopular decisions affecting our town have been taken over the past couple of years and there is little chance of those decisions being reversed. But I have now joined the Planning Committee of South Lakes District Council and hope that we shall have more influence in future. I shall also become the deputy chairman of SLDC’s Standards Committee. All of us in Grange feel very committed to our town. With your support and in collaboration with the Town Council I think we can achieve some good things for the town. On a trial basis I will hold “surgeries” for ward residents on July 11th and, from August 15th onwards, on the 3rd Saturday of each month. These will be in the Institute from 10 o’clock until midday. I hope to see any of you who have things you would like to raise there. Eric Morrell Lib-Dem Councillor, Grange North.

Regarding the sport facilities on the prom. My granddaughter and I were hoping for a game of bowls, but was told it would cost £5 - the same as (an all day ticket) for a family of four for all day. I pointed out that as there was only the two of us and it was 3.30pm, could we have it for £2.50, but the answer was no. So, we declined and as the rain then came down we were pleased we didn’t take part, but it’s a pity we can’t pay for individual games as we are local and wouldn’t want to spend all day on the prom, unlike visitors. Mrs Jones Grange

Dear Editor,

The lido presents Grange with a grand opportunity to boost its tourism - accentuate its architectural and energy efficiency credentials. Grange likes and celebrates its Edwardian heritage but other styles are represented in the town including some fine Arts and Crafts houses, the Art Deco lido and Victorian influence - but very little of any merit from the modern era. Refurbish the lido to highlight its Art Deco origin and add a roof that complements both that heritage and the curves of nearby hills and the Bay. Some of the town's attraction would be its diverse architecture. The design for the lido's roof should aim to win awards. My preference would be for a domed roof made of a timber frame that could be opened on fine days. As much as possible of the existing pool's swimming and diving areas should be retained - not filled with rubble. Grange, with its southerly aspect should make the most of its sun, wind and water resources for energy capture. The lido provides an opportunity to exploit these assets. I have heard the Promenade needs some major maintenance. If this is the case I suggest its refurbishment should include the pipes necessary for a ground source heat pump system to heat the lido. Further energy could be extracted from the Bay - as is done at the National Trust's Plas Newydd. The lido would be given a false floor to cover the heating pipes. With such a system and roof the pool could be used all year and with minimal recurrent heating costs.

Dear Editor,

I write with growing concern over the safety of the dangerous handrails over the large drop on the ramp and beyond on the railway footbridge on Clare House Lane ,Grange over sands. This matter was also included in the Grange Community LED Plan 2014 ,suggesting safety measures to be in place by March 2015, as yet no progress.I contacted Grange Council and received and sent various emails to them and the best response was from a councillor Harvey who stated that as of yet no incidents or injuries had been caused that it wasn't a problem and that Rail Network were responsible, sounds like buck passing to me I tried to contact Network Rail but found their website practically useless.I wondered perhaps you could feature this problem of the railing safety with a picture maybe and seek what response you get. May I also say that shortly quite a few more families with children will be moving next door on the former Berners site to this dangerous well documented structure.I hope you can be of assistance in resolving this matter. If a skating rink can be maintained using sun, wind and water (rather than oil, gas or nuclear) energy sources, it could be a good additional attraction to the town, but it would have to be outside the, heated, lido. * I think Low Wood Hotel on Windermere planned to extract heat from the Lake to heat the building, but I cannot find reference to it. Robin Le Mare Allithwaite,

Dear Editor,

Seldom do I express my opinions about local issues, being a live and let live sort of person, but as I gaze upon Tricketts meadow with the summer breeze rippling the buttercups, which shine like gold dust and smell the lush young greens of the hedgerows and observe the myriads hues of the bay with the Kent channel meandering its way to the Irish sea, I cannot help but mourn its passing. I’m sure the people of Kents Bank Road relish this vista as I do, plus the enchanting avenue of lime trees soon to be a memory, all superseded by inelegant, amorphous, grey concrete shapes. We seem to be living under the boot of planners, surveyors, architects et al, with their straight lines and monochrome minds. Are there straight lines in nature? Not a single one. To build on this area of Grange is shameful and shouldn’t be allowed. Hay, cows and sheep will soon replace the buttercups. The sooner people realise that farming and food production are the main necessities the better. The next piece of planning will probably urbanise Hampsfell. I have observed and sketched the rhythmic twists and turns of the bay with its colours, lines and tones virtually on a daily basis so at least I have made many paintings of this view in all its various moods. A humble offering for posterity I guess. T. Deardon ADVERTORIAL

Assessing your care needs.

The Care Act 2014 brings the law related to social care together in one place, modernising or updating it where necessary. As we saw in the last article, it sets out what councils have to do if they know that someone is an unpaid carer and needs support. Now let’s take a quick look at the assessment for those who are being cared for. The Act tells councils what they must do if someone has care needs and needs support at home or in a care home. Previously, if you had money to pay for your own care, the Local Authority could leave you to fend for yourself. This was not always the case and in Cumbria I found our local Social Services helpful when we were trying to arrange services for our ‘self funders’ as well as those that the Local Authority were responsible for. From this April, you have the right to ask the Local Authority to assess your needs regardless of your finances and to arrange services for you, (although not care home places until next year). This will now be called a ‘needs assessment’ instead of a ‘community care assessment’ and as the eligibility criteria are changing, a person’s care plan may change when they are re-assessed, or when they ask for a review. The needs assessment will be subject to new national eligibility criteria which introduce a minimum threshold. Put simply, if the person being cared for meets this threshold, they will have eligible needs. Even better news is that the new criteria look less strict and so many more people could be eligible for care and support. This should also make assessments more uniform around the country and less like a ‘postcode lottery’, although local authorities may still opt to cover more needs than the law requires. The Care Act introduces a general (very human) duty on local authorities to consider a person’s wellbeing, which is widely defined, when making decisions about them or planning services. The wellbeing principles are in turn also part of the eligibility criteria. If the impact of a disabled person's eligible needs on their wellbeing is significant then the eligibility criteria will be met. The needs assessment will then be the gateway to the financial assessment, after which the local authority will have to agree with them which of their eligible needs they will meet and how.

Grange Garden Society The Title of the presentation at the May meeting of Grange Garden Society was ‘Enjoying your Sweet Peas’, and Kevin Preston, the speaker, more than illustrated the title. This year he has grown five thousand plants on his land, each one tied to its own support and tended with great care. With all tendrils removed and reduced to only one flowering shoot, the blooms produced are spectacular. It is no wonder that Kevin has been the National Champion grower on several occasions and has gained numerous other awards

Each individual bloom has four flowers and presents on one straight stem which can be up to 24 inches long. For competition they are arranged in a fan but Kevin also exhibits Sweet Peas in arrangement. His interest in these delightful plants is not however just for show, he grows many other forms and his enthusiasm for this plant is infectious. The next meeting July 17th Gardening for everyone

Cartmel & District Flower Club A beautiful selection of summer flowers were used by Ross Harrison from Dodds of Ulverston in her demonstration for Cartmel and District Flower Club on Monday 15th June. The title was "Summer Fantasia" and her first arrangement, in an unusual container of birch bark, included Gerbera Gladioli Lilium Roses Carnations all in a delicate shade of pink. Ross explained how she received the next unusual container as a gift from her Father at Holker Garden Festival and sharing with us how she decorated the show car and made the very impressive lady passenger from plant material. Flowers in her demonstration included Strelitzia, Snake- Grass, Monkshood, Agapanthus, Sea Holly, Ageratum, Carnations, Stocks, Lilium, Grasses. Beautiful flowers expertly arranged and entertaining us with very amusing stories about her work in the shop ,her family, her dogs and the many puppies she breeds. A most enjoyable and entertaining demonstration. The next meeting on July 20th will be the club Summer Outing to Preston.

Flookburgh Village Hall Bonus ball winners for May are: 30 May No 24, Denise Jones. 23 May - No 25, Eileen Kester. 16 May - No 17, Wendy Wilkinson. 9 May - No 18, Sue Steele . This Village hall held its AGM on the 19th May 2015, both the Chairman and the Treasurer gave favourable reports on last year's progress. The hall has had a new entrance door and step, and the exterior of the building has been painted. Bookings and revenue for the year increased and with the new heating system gas costs are down. The hall has had to have a safety check on its emergency lighting and unfortunately failed. The cost for rectifying this will be in the region of £1500 . The committee will try to get help with funding through charitable organisations and donations .

Witherslack WI There was a lot of business to get through this month. Sylvia Woodhead led a very interesting walk round Lindale on a bitterly cold evening. She was given a large bouquet of flowers and also thanked for buying the wine to accompany the meal. Four ladies attended the live relay of the National AGM from the Albert Hall at Kendal`s Brewery Arts Centre. It was an interesting event, but Anne Walshaw was actually at the meeting and gave a first hand account of being there with 5000 other women, and several “Royals”. Caroline Blee reported on a cookery visit to Denman with Shirley Christie They learnt to make Artisan breads. Then Shirley told of the two of them going to the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Sadly, member Jackie Ratcliffe was one whose ticket was taken back causing great disappointment. The speaker Sally Farrington has started up

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild. Members of the North Lonsdale branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 2nd of June. The subject was free-machine embroidery taught by member Mary Seaman. Using the sewing machine with the feed-dog down the embroiderer controls the direction and density of the stitching to provide the desired effect. It is often described as drawing with the needle. Members quickly got to grips with the techniques, with those to whom the technique was new, receiving encouragement and advice from Mary.

Vice-President Dorothy Hornung chaired the June meeting as President Glenda Clark was at the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace along with two other members. Congratulations were given for the entry which had won first prize in the WI ‘Jam and Jerusalem’ class at the Holker Flower Festival. Owing to illness our scheduled speaker Nick Henderson was unable to bring his ‘Corio Rapters’ talk to the meeting. However at only two hours notice one of our members, Mrs Frances Jarvis, stepped in to give us a fascinating and interesting talk about her life and work both as a radiographer and a photographer. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, she had lived and worked in Malaya, Kuwait, the Seychelles, South Africa and Libya, as well as in the UK. Her experiences kept us all spellbound and the members’ appreciation was evident.

Our varied programme continues with a trip, on August 13th, to the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, when John Buchan’s, ‘The Thirty Nine Steps’, will be performed. The show starts at 2pm. This is an amusing and fast-paced new production of the popular West End show.

At next month’s meeting the group have invited Maggie Hickman Smith to our annual “big name“ workshop. Maggie’s workshop is entitled “Get Plastered!” It promises to be an entertaining day.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 7th July at 2.00pm when Naomi Edwards and Louisa Mary Martin will bring us ‘Little Island’ – world music. There is no meeting in August. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.

Arnside & Arnside Knott WI There was a good attendance at the June meeting of Arnside & Arnside Knott W.I. The speaker was Tom Clare whose topic was the First Farmers. Reports were heard from members who had attended the Centenary Garden Party and the A.G.M. in London, and of a visit to the Anderton Lift. Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies) As the golf programme swings into summer intensity, the weather has fluctuated enormously, going from hot to downright cool! The Edna Thornley mixed competition was won by Ruth Waring and Mike Garnett. The Coronation Trophy, played over 2 legs, was won by Ellie Woodburn with 62pts. Ronnie Hall was runner-up. Unfortunately, Lady Captain’s day out at kendal Golf Club was postponed due to rain and gales!

8 ladies enjoyed a day out at Lancaster Ladies Open. The last Bronze League fixture, away at Sedbergh, was a wet affair , which we lost.

Grange Ramblers 13th May, seven walkers met at Sizergh Castle, and followed the NT trails across Brigg Steel Road, entered wetland project of reeds planting on Lyth Valley, then to Barrowfield farm, ascended to Scout Scar for lunch, passing Helsington church, again on NT trail back to cars. On 20 May, 9 ramblers climbed from Grange Fell Golf Club to Hampsfell Hospice. Descended to Longlands, from Aynsome to Hill Mill, Burns Farm and Howbarrow. Returned via Low Bank Side, Birkby, Templand, High Fell Gate. Weather good and distance about 10 miles. Led by Lis Fell. 26th of May, 5 ramblers met at Tilberthwaite Gill for a 6.5 mile walk including Hodge Close, Colwith Force and Cathedral Cavern. The weather was pleasant and sunny with beautiful views of Little Langdale.

1st June, a small group of Ramblers met at Blind Lane car park for a 6 mile walk on the southern edge of Grizedale Forest, passing through Satterthwaite and Rusland, Force Forge and Force Mills, with waterfalls and a sculpture of 2 bathers on the way. We were treated to a good variety of birdsong along the way back to car park.

Newton & Field Broughton WI On 19th May, Newton and Field Broughton WI hosted the group meeting of Cartmel Valley WI’s at the Methodist Church at Grange over Sands. It was a very successful evening. The speaker was Joanne Halliwell, who became Betsy the Scullery Maid and kept the group happily entertained. Members took part in the Holker Garden Festival entering in some of the competitions. Several also undertook stewarding duties in the WI tent. As usual there was a lot of business to be dealt with at the meeting on 10th June. The two members who were fortunate enough to go to the Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace gave fascinating descriptions of the occasion. A report was given on the outcome of the Resolution: ‘Failing to care - Assessment of use in long term care’ at the AGM in London. This was not passed as it was not thought to be particularly well thought out. Trevor Hughes, Historian and Kendalian was the speaker for the evening. He gave a fascinating and informative talk on the history of Kendal.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th July. The programme has had to be altered and the speaker has not yet been confirmed. It will be at Lindale Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.

Grange WI Our Craft Team had a very successful time at the Holker Festival recently, winning two first prizes and two second prizes. We also had a great time at the Edwardian Festival with lots of people visiting our stall. We celebrated 100 years of the WI by decorating our stall with 100 flowers. As they were made of paper we were pleased the rain held off. We are looking forward to a talk at the end of month on the poet Pam Ayres.

Grange Soroptimists The club ran their successful tea, coffee and cakes stall at the Edwardian festival raising £350 for club projects. President Cathy Lubelska has given presentations to the members covering the two main, very worthwhile charities which will be supported by the club this year. These are Womankind Worldwide supporting women in Africa, Asia and Latin America and Sense helping people who are deaf and blind.

The club is holding a “Spot the Dynamic S” competition, looking for the hidden Soroptimist logos in Grange. Test your observation skills during July and August by entering the competition. Trefoil Guild Members met at Witherslack for a business meeting and discussion. This was followed by a substantial tea provided by Hilda Jarvis. The next meeting will be a campfire at Hillgarth on 13th .July. Details from Molly Inglis on 33141.

Grange Lions Members of Grange Lions had a very enjoyable day on their stall at The Edwardian Festival in June. The weather stayed dry despite the usual threat of rain from the met office! A variety of costumes were worn but David and Jim in particular looked very dapper. A Lion hunt for the children proved very popular as did the furry animal Tombola. All monies raised will go to local charities. At our June meeting we also voted to donate monies to the Fun Run being organised in Cartmel later this summer in aid of Cartmel primary school.

Arrangements were finalised for the Lions football competition at Cartmel Priory school: this is a yearly event for the older pupils of all the local Primary schools and Cartmel Priory school very kindly support us in this by allowing us to use their football pitches, and supplying referees from their older pupils.

Coffee Club In May we welcomed Alan and Rosemary Armstrong, originally from Belfast but for the last eight years they have been living in Donegal in the republic of Ireland. They have been made very welcome but found the culture very different. The currency is different, the Irish language is widely spoken and taught in schools, road signs are in Irish, though maps use English names. Life is expensive with a visit to the doctor costing €70 – or €100 for him to visit you – and the nearest A and E is 25 miles away and closed at weekends. With EU money Ireland enjoyed a Tiger economy for a few years but when the implosion happened development ceased, prices rose and many from Donegal went abroad. They have made many friends through their neighbours and involvement in local activities such as Irish country dancing, quilting etc People are very religious, 95% attending Mass regularly, though few seem to have a personal faith in Christ. On July 21st we welcome Greg and Sue Walton who will speak about the challenge of ‘Mission or Movement’. All are welcome at Abbot Hall from 10 am for coffee before their talk at 10.30 am

Grange Freemasons Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 (founded 1877) changed the format of the Regular Meeting held on the second Friday in June. There was no traditional ceremony. After a short business meeting the members adjourned for a buffet supper provided by Burneside Bakery to which non-members were invited. A well-known local resident Peter Fitchett entertained with some magic after which renowned local historian Robert Wheatley of Aldingham gave a most interesting talk on Antiques explaining the historical perspectives of the items he produced. Both were thanked by the Worshipful Master Alan Telford for the marvellous entertainment they had provided. The next Regular Meeting of the Lodge is on the second Friday in September. Members and their families and friends will be participating in social activities organised by the Lodge Social Committee during the summer break. Enquiries about meetings of the Lodge and or hiring the Masonic Hall can be sent to L1715secretary@gmail.com

Thanks also to members for providing a great spread of food and helping to make the event a success. Welcome to our lovely new members. Thanks also to those who had a go at the tennis game at the Edwardian Festival and for those members who supported this event. Thanks to all who contributed and helped raise £188, despite the cold, rainy conditions that day. On Tuesday, 5 May, the Annual North West NSPCC Conference was held in Ambleside. This was a most informative and entertaining meeting during which a raffle was held raising a further £113 for our region. On the morning of Saturday, 6th June, we held our “Summer Coffee Morning” in the United Reformed Church Hall. This was a successful and enjoyable event, which raised £395. Grange & District U3A Tom Attwood from Halecat Nursery entertained members at the general meeting in May with an account of his career in horticulture and the development of the nursery. As many members are familiar with the nursery and its products, Tom’s presentation was all the more interesting. The June presentation was cancelled in favour of a train/ launch/lunch event based on Lakeside Railway and Windermere in celebration of our 15th anniversary. July will see another special event – a tea dance at the Cumbria Grand Hotel.

Group activities continue: local explorers visited Brougham Hall in May and in June, were shown the architectural secrets of Hawkshead by Andy Lowe; the geology and landscape group went to Furness Abbey to study sandstone and glacial features; the fell walking group went to Grizedale, Ullswater and climbed the paper bridge; the cyclists completed a 21 mile circuit to the south of Penrith which included stops at Larch Cottage Garden and Lowther Castle.

Forthcoming events include a trip to Chester Zoo, a Scottish holiday for the ‘Out and About’ group. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange .
