Booths pull out the stops to help Grange

A chance remark from civic society secretary, volunteer and former consort to the Mayor, Jackie Bailey, about the deserted flower beds at the Booths site, led Grange Now to contact Booths and ask them for help.

Well doesn't time fly.

As Lorena, our accounts person is about to move on to another role with an accounts firm in Kendal who will help her develop her career further, I checked back and found out she has been with us since January. In that time time Lorena has put in a tremendous effort at Grange Now and I am very grateful to her for doing a professional and thorough job. As a team we will miss her and wish her all the very best both with her new job and ongoing professional qualifications.

Cartmel Show is the not to be missed event in the next few days, Thanks to Lorena from all at taking place on Wednesday 5th Grange Now August. A great day out for all. Meanwhile over in Arnside there are a series of local produce markets every Friday, Cartmel Food Market on the 21st of August, and of course Prom Art is on the last Sunday of the month. Here's hoping for good weather.

Thereafter followed dozens of emails resulting in Booths Buyer, Thomas Hargreaves, having over 50 bedding plants delivered to Grange, in time for the Grange in Bloom judging to take place. Thomas told Grange Now: ‘’ Booths pride themselves on working with local suppliers and our bedding plants are no exception. We have been working with our local supplier Arden Lea Nurseries, based in Hesketh Bank, for over 20 years. We have worked closely to develop a range of products that are genuinely local , with many of the plants grown from scratch. This all takes extra time but it means we can offer customers some of the finest plants around.’’

I’m sure the residents appreciate all their hard work and also the generosity of Booths, the site now looks a lot more colourful and hopefully impressed the Cumbria in Bloom judges.

Jackie told Grange Now: “Civic Society would like to thank Grange Now and Booths Stores, who provided the plants. Members of the Cumbria in Bloom group have planted these and the wall now looks so much better in time for the judging day.”

Councillor Thomas added: “We received a lovely selection of plants, all in excellent condition, and hopefully they will continue to adorn this part of town throughout the summer.” Bloom Group co-ordinator Jan Tomlinson said: “Bloom group are delighted and would like to thank everyone involved."

£4,250 for St Mary’s Hospice Leven Valley Support Group, along with help from friends, family and volunteers, managed to raise the magnificent sum of £4,250 when they held their annual car boot and summer fair in Haverthwaite on 21st June.

Winning motorcycle racer needs more sponsors Local motorcycle racer Tom McHale recently took on his biggest challenge by racing at the legendary Isle of Man TT.

Months of preparation, training and hours of grueling work on his bike led to Tom finishing all three of his races on his debut at the world renowned event. He quickly picked up the formidable 37 ¾ mile course, comprising of narrow country roads, sharp bends and the infamous mountain; finishing 32nd overall and being crowned fastest newcomer in the senior race after reaching an average lap of 121.4mph. A truly incredible result for Tom’s first time! All this was only possible because of the help and support of Tom’s sponsors, friends, family and everyone who took part in the fundraising events. A special thank you goes to The Keg & Kitchen, The Kings Arms at Cartmel, The Rusty Bullets and all the local businesses who donated such fantastic raffle prizes. The changes are marked on the attached timetable with red/pink journeys withdrawn and yellow and Green journeys re-timed. Unshaded journeys are unchanged.

The office will be open in the first week of September as a temporary base while planning is sought to redevelop the site. Foodbank - how it all began

In 1983, three Soroptimist International (SI) members from Grange, Penny Ward, Pam Baines and Pat Rye, spent three weeks on a visit to the Far East, attending the 59th Conference of the SI Federation.

After the Conference the ladies visited Calcutta, and a highlight of the trip was a meeting with Mother Teresa herself. Penny Ward told Grange Now: "It was a very humbling experience to meet and shake hands with Mother Teresa, a little stooped old lady in a much-darned sari and well-worn sandals held together with safety pins. She asked us where we were from, and charged us to get in touch with her Missionaries of Charity in London. We did that when we returned home and learnt from them about the Co-workers who work alongside the sisters doing what they can to help where there is a need. We heard that there was a small group at the Catholic church in Grange, and so we joined with them to set up an ecumenical group including the Methodists and URC. In the last 24

years we have organised various appeals for causes both at home and overseas. Although now only a few in number we continue to meet on the 4th Monday of every month for prayer and meditation and to discuss any suggestions for service. Mother Teresa asked us to seek out the needs in our own neighbourhood - she said that it is often easier to send money to relieve hunger across the world than to relieve the loneliness and pain on our own doorsteps. I am sure she would approve of what we are doing to support the food banks!” Food bank volunteers would like to offer sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the recent appeal, and to those who helped to receive and pack it. A good collection was sent on for distribution in Ulverston, Barrow and Millom.

The date for the next appeal is 6 September, which will again take place at the Meeting Room, St Paul's Church, Grange, between 1 and 3 pm.

New shelter at Kents Bank Railway Station The official opening of the new passenger shelter on the platform at Kents Bank station took place in the morning sunshine on Friday 3rd July, 2015. Although the old waiting room will remain in use, this new shelter brings facilities at the station up to modern standards. The project was organised by the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership and funded by South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council, Northern Rail, a grant from ACoRP and the Furness Line CRP. The installation of the new shelter took place only four months after the installation of three new art panels at the station and more improvements are proposed in the future.

John Wong from Hong Kong has been in touch with Grange Now to ask if Grange residents can help him trace a friend.

He told us: “Following in the footsteps of my elder brothers, my father sent me, aged 9, to England in April 1966 from Hong Kong, five months before I was due to attend preparatory school in Somerset. My command of English was very poor. Cartmel was my home for the next 5 months and I stayed with my guardian Mrs Eileen Hargreaves (d. 2002) who lived in Causeway House on the corner of Barn Garth. When I returned in 2012 part of the house, as I remembered it, was still standing noticeably along Barn Garth but on the causeway where the garage once stood has been demolished. Eileen’s husband, John (d. 1963) was a colonial officer in Hong Kong who became friends with my father.”

John continued: “When I arrived in England, my vocabulary consisted of just a handful of words, certainly not proficient to make conversation and long before I stepped foot in Lancashire it was decided that the service of a private tutor was the best option for my cause.

From May until early August, Kate Thornley (Thornly? Thornleigh?) was like a surrogate mother to me. She arrived every morning, nurtured me like I was her son, tutored me and when the weather was fit we took time to go for walks; once taking a drive to Carlisle to visit her relative. It was an encapsulating 4 months.”

John would dearly like to know if Kate is alive and still living in the neighbourhood. He told us he is nearly 60 and his lasting ambition is to meet this wonderful woman again. John said he thinks she’s

probably in her early-mid 70s and from memory “she was a tall woman with a slim figure and had light fair hair. She lived in a bungalow in one of these 3 roads close to Grange Fell Road; Ashmount, Charney or Eden Mount. She drove a mini, ubiquitous for those days, and owned a white Scots Terrier called Judy. Her tutoring ended in August and I met her once more in Cartmel Park and I believe she married shortly afterwards.” If anyone has any information which will help John please can you contact him on

Boys share top accolade for Magna Carta poetry competition

Allithwaite and Grange Primary school pupils recently took part in a competition to write a poem based on the values of the Magna Carta: justice and fairness, .

The Barons formed a great army They made John sign laws (some were barmy)The French invaded. John felt jaded, Then John died, the new king was charmy.

Two year 6 boys came joint first in the competition: Herbie Harrison from Grange Primary and Douglas McCleery from Allithwaite Primary.

Both boys were delighted to win a hand turned commemorative bowl made from the reclaimed rafters of the Priory. Here are their winning entries:

Last year, Cartmel came back from the Cumbria In Bloom awards ceremony in Carlisle with a car boot full of trophies, including two Golds for Best Small Village and Best Overall Village. The Cartmel In Bloom Group hope to do it again in Dalton this year with their work in horticulture, environment and community. Judging took place in Grange on the morning of the 15th July. Hopefully the new plantings at the old Vantage Toyota site will have helped to create a good impression. We look forward to the results.

Lots of fun on the run!

The recent Cartmel Fun Run event was a great success both as a fundraiser for Cartmel Primary School and as a sporting event for the wider community. Over 140 runners took part in the four races on a sunny summer’s evening raising over £200 for the school.

Oasis Dental Care fundraise for Bridge2Aid

On Friday 5th June the team at Oasis Dental Care in Grangeover-Sands held a “Smile in Pink” day to raise money for a very worthwhile charity called Bridge2Aid. We held a raffle to win a goody basket which included an electric toothbrush and other oral hygiene products. We also baked some cakes for patients our in exchange for donations to the charity (as long as they promised to brush their teeth after the cake!!). We managed to raise just under £100 throughout the day.

The main goal of Bridge2Aid is to provide access to safe, simple, emergency dental treatment to all. Their work enables training in emergency dental care for health care workers in remote rural communities of developing countries. They provide the health care workers with the skills, equipment and resources that they will need to provide emergency dental care. In the past 10 years, Bridge2Aid has demonstrated success in both Tanzania and Rwanda, making access to lifechanging treatment available to more than 3 million people.

Grange Town Council meeting The last full town council meeting took place on Monday 13th July. The controversial application to run a pizza parlour from the former Grange Now offices has been refused, on the grounds that they wouldn’t allow the extractor fan in a conservation area. Details of other applications can be found on the website. Other matters included a discussion on improvements to facilities at the Bandstand. In order to satisfy the requirements of a risk assessment, a sink and small water heater must be installed. Every summer, Charity and Co, turn out to make tea and coffee in china cups and saucers, and, are doing a great job with antiquated facilities. Councillor Mrs Shapland thinks it's a waste of money due to it flooding in winter, but as Councillor Greenway pointed out: “the cups and saucers at the bandstand is iconic Grange” to which Councillor Woods (Leader) agreed. A meeting between South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) and Grange Town Council (GTC), to discuss the future of the lido and Victoria Hall has recently taken place. We will let you know the outcome in the next issue.

Open Garden Day is a great success

The Open Gardens Day in Grange was very successful – the weather was ideal and over 250 people visited the gardens. The visitors remarked on the good diversity of the 12 gardens, the amazing limestone features and waterfalls in many of the gardens and the excellent walking route round. The 3 gardens offering teas did a roaring trade and the visitors enjoyed a wonderful but tiring day out. The total raised was over £1300 which will be spent improving the public gardens around Grange. The Bloom Group would like to thank all the gardeners for making it such a special day and for all their hard work.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our latest newsletter, we’ve had plenty of fun over the last few months including our Strawberry Fete at the start of July. April

We started the month by creating St. George's day bunting and flags which were ready in time for our St. George's day meal and some abstract art, which is displayed at The Old Vicarage.

We began with an outing to Lakes Aquarium with several staff and residents seeing all the new fish and ending the visit with afternoon tea.

John Mario returned – he isn’t just a singer, he’s an all-round entertainer, with jokes, stories and lots of laughs. We also had vintage entertainer Freya Green come and sing – she knew some very popular old time songs. Whoopie Do, the beautiful St. Bernard returned to see the residents – we can never get over how big she is – our cats made themselves scarce! After much discussion the latest big art project was started – the residents decided to create a coat of arms for The Old Vicarage. The good weather meant we could sit in the garden and relax and play croquet as well as plant seeds and flowers and it allowed residents to sit outside and paint. It also meant our regular outings to the cafes of Grange were much more enjoyable.

Edna likes the fish – and they like her!

June The variable weather wasn't going to stop us - we took our residents to the cafes and Prom in Grange, had choir sessions in the garden and painted and planted outside as much as possible. As well as their continuing work on the coat of arms which was finally finished, PHEW!, the residents and staff spent time preparing for our Strawberry Fete at the start of July. From wrapping prizes to making bunting, they were busy, they still found time for a new project painting window flower boxes.

More entertainers came calling with the Nostalgia Singers making a welcome visit and Folksy Theatre dropping by for a bank holiday special concert. Our craft work didn’t stop as the residents got going on the coat of arms and they also made a spectacular 3D light up flower display.

The Owl Sanctuary from Walney came and they brought a range of owls from a baby Barn Owl to a majestic European Eage Owl. We invited a class from Allithwaite Primary School to join us.

Of course we had a visiting entertainer in the form of skilled accordionist Jean Marks.

Sun shines on our Strawberry Fete

As well as ice cream and Pimms, We were extremely lucky to have Bongo Balloons come and make animals to give to the children. Andrew put up his banners and residents' family members put up balloons for us. We caught up with friends and family we hadn’t seen for a while.

We raised £600 - half of this will go to the Grange Lions to give to charity and the rest for The Old Vicarage Residents Fund.

We set up on Friday with the aid of the Grange & District Lions and crossed our fingers. And then it all came together, The weather was great, we were lulled into a blissful state by a combination of strawberries and cream, gorgeous weather and great music from John Mario.

“A performer of fearless intensity”

Following the superlative performance by the pianist Ji Liu in July, the next concert in the Grange over Sands and district concert club's season will be held on Friday 7th August at 8pm in the Victoria Hall.

At the end of July, the very talented young dancers from Elite School of Dance came together for their bi-annual show. Over two nights, the dancers, aged from two and a half upwards, put on a fantastic show of modern, tap and ballet routines. The theme of this year’s show was ‘Colours’ and the dancers managed to raise, through a raffle and ticket sales, over £1,000. Of this money, £450 will go to the Joe and Connie fund, and £450 to Singing for the Brain.

The whole show had a professional feel, from the stunning costumes to the fantastic lighting and sound effects. The dancers were clearly enjoying every minute of the mind boggling number of routines that they had managed to perfect. The concert club have managed to entice two more great names to Grange: the violinist Tamsin WaleyCohen (cousin of jockey Sam Waley-Cohen) and the pianist and composer Huw Watkins. Tamsin is an exceptional young violinist who has been described by the Guardian as "A performer of fearless intensity". She studied at the Royal College of Music where she won all the available awards and was their string player of the year in 2005. Huw studied at Chetham's, and is Professor of

composition at the RCM. He has written several concertos, sonatas and songs, and as a pianist is regularly heard on BBC radio 3. Their programme is entitled "1917" and is a fascinating survey of the music being produced in Europe in this historic and pivotal year. It includes works by Debussy, Elgar, Sibelius and Respighi which were included in their third and most recent CD, described on BBC radio 3 as "Really impressive". Admission at the door is £12. When did you last see some embroidery? Over the past 30 years embroidery has become very exciting and experimental; no longer just traditional stitches worked in a traditional way on items such as tray cloths, tablecloths and collars.

Stitching is still the basis of embroidery but it can be worked in a traditional way with traditional threads or modified to produce an array of effects and carried out with a range of contemporary threads on the market. It can be worked by hand or machine or a combination of the two. The modern embroiderer uses all sorts of art materials and techniques to help produce the kind of effects they are after from dyes, paint, and oil pastel to printing.

t just 20 years old, Evie is an extremely talented young lady with an incredible voice, but don’t take my word for it. Having appeared on Radio Cumbria and BBC Introducing, Evie has also performed gigs across South Lakeland. I asked where her love of music had come from and she told me: “I think my parents and music teachers have been great sources of inspiration but I would say one teacher in particular really helped me, and that is Richard Gray from Arnside. I was about 13 and my passion for progressing through my piano grades was fast-fading. Richard offered a different type of music to me - jazz piano, involving improvisation, singing, playing keyboard in jazz bands and chord based. I think if it wasn't for Richard I might have given up piano and music entirely, which would have been a horrible shame and something I would no doubt be regretting now.” I asked if she had taken formal music lessons and she told me: “I was taught formally for 7 years on piano and for 5 years in singing, both classically, so that was very much about grades and 'reading the notes'. It wasn't the most fun I've had with music but this training certainly gave me a very good grounding for the music I play now which is improvisation, playing by ear and reading basic chords.” Take heart all of you when practising your scales! I was keen to find out where her songwriting inspiration comes from. “My best ideas usually come after I have had a music drought, where I have not had access to a piano for a long time or when I have lots of lyrics stored up

CARTMEL AGRICULTURAL SHOW

ednesday 5th August sees the 132nd Cartmel Show taking place. Hosted by the Cartmel Agricultural Society, it is a great day out with something for everyone. There’s the very best in livestock and horticulture alongside dog agility, birds of prey, and show jumping and carriage driving.

HISTORIC CAR SHOW

unday 9th August sees the return of the Dales and Lakes Historic Car Show to the Memorial Playing Fields, Grange. The show provides a wonderful family day out with enthusiasts from all over the North displaying their cherished vehicles and motorcycles.

This annual event now in its 20th year has always been run on a “Not for profit“ basis and has raised thousands of pounds for local charities. This year the charity is the “Bendrigg Trust” www.bendrigg.org which provides high quality adventure courses for the disabled and disadvantaged.

The entrance fee is £5 and accompanied children under 16 are free. Please talk to the knowledgeable owners on the field where you will see vehicles spanning 80 years of development and be impressed by the quality of the workmanship involved in their restoration. Make the most of the excellent facilities provided for refreshments and don’t forget in the afternoon the free half –hourly vintage bus that runs between Grange and Kents Bank railway stations which stops at the show site. Bring the family for a fun day out, there is something for everyone!

A Day in the Life: Michael Fieldhouse School in Jammu, Northern India welcomed Michael as guest of honour and he was taken for a guided tour in the school minibus, which funds from The Lantern helped to purchase. Whilst in the region, Michael also visited St Mary's "Church Mission Society" family in Kathmandu, Nepal. He was a speaker in their church and also enjoyed several days trekking in the Himalayas.

Michael Fieldhouse of Kents Bank, and latterly of Allithwaite, has devoted most of his adult life to helping others.

In January 2000 Michael purchased ‘The Lantern’, the charity shop in Allithwaite which opens Thursday to Saturday every week. Michael told Grange Now: “ I bought ‘the lantern’ to establish my millennium project of recycling household goods, meeting and sharing with people in the community, and to raise funds for worthy causes near and far.” Many may think that this is Michael’s only ‘job’, but this

is far from the case, Michael was the Purchase Manager at Oxleys, working full time and fitting in his charity work around that. He has also been Civic Mayor for Grange (2001/2002) and is a former scout leader.

I don’t think anyone can say that Michael hasn’t done more than his fair share for the community, and it is time for him to move on and pursue other interests.The Lantern closes its doors on Saturday 29th August and he told me: "myself and the dedicated team of volunteers would like to say a very big thankyou to everyone who has helped to support the shop over the last

15 years." I think Michael’s ideal outcome would be for someone to buy The Lantern and carry on running it as a charity shop, but as he told me, you can run any type of business from the premises, which includes a flat upstairs, and which is situated on the busy main street in Allithwaite. Michael’s wish to help worthy causes has been established through St Mary's C of E Church in Allithwaite and has maintained a strong Christian link with the community. Tea, coffee and biscuits have been served, to make people feel welcome, in a relaxed atmosphere.

Michael said: “Living in the flat

above and opening the shop three days a week gave me a reasonable balance between work rest and play! Michael currently works for Cumbria County Council as a social care worker. The success of the operation has only been made possible by the hard work of many volunteers. The support of his parents, his Auntie and members of St Mary's congregation was invaluable in getting the shop established and its continuing success.” 2010 was a highlight year for Michael as he was able to visit a link project through Allithwaite Cof E School. Another highlight year had to be 2012. Michael told me: “I was highly honoured to receive an MBE for voluntary service within the community.” He continued: “I am very grateful for all the contributions received at The Lantern Charity Shop which have helped make it a success. Grange Now has been a constant support throughout by publishing periodic articles. The Lantern will be closing its doors at the end of August, which will give myself and Lynne a bit more time to enjoy our shared hobbies.” Michael awaits with interest as to what will happen to the property next, and he hopes it is something that will benefit the community of Allithwaite.

Grange postal workers raising money for children’s heart unit

Former Grange Post Office Manager, Adam Sharpley, has formed a team of 6 Postmen/women and Managers to compete in the 10K Total warrior event, due to be held in the Lake District on 2nd August 2015. Adam told Grange Now: “We are hoping to raise £1200 in total for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) based in Newcastle. We have chosen this charity as it has played a massive part in the lives of a colleague from the Grange Office, and her family. The charity have provided support and treatment for her little girl and we wanted to show our support by raising as much money as we can and to bring the charity to the attention of the public.” You can sponsor the team by collecting a form from the Grange Office or by going online to the address below. To celebrate this new programme of work, Jack Manning, retired fisherman and expert on the history of the industry around the Bay, will be giving his illustrated talk ‘A History of Local Fishing’ on Saturday 15th August at 2pm in the Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands. It is a great opportunity to learn about our shared heritage through the eyes of one of Cumbria’s best known fishermen.

15 years ago “Grandma” Tina told me she’d put my name down for an allotment at Cartmel Village Hall. I was shocked! An allotment?? Isn’t that for ‘old people in overalls and flat caps’? How wrong I was!

The Partnership is also looking for volunteers from the Grange area to help collect the fishing memories of people in the district. We are seeking people who would like to learn the skills of oral history

recording. With the decline of commercial fishing in the Bay, the need to capture the eye-witness stories and traditions of those for whom fishing was, or still is, a way of life is more urgent than ever. Volunteers are the key to collecting as much material as possible to preserve these precious stories for future generations. So if you love heritage and love hearing eye-witness stories about life around the Bay and would be keen to learn more about oral history, Morecambe Bay Partnership would love to hear from you. The Perfect Plot

Apart from the fruit, the peas were very popular with Troy and Jodie, they never made it to the pan! We once took a full carrier bag of peas on holiday with us, but by the time we arrived at the ferry 3 hours later, there wasn’t a pea left in sight! do but carrots? Amazing how well supermarket bought carrots, with the leaves on, transplant very well into the allotment soil. If anybody had seen me plant perfectly good carrots into the ground!! The children were none the wiser about the carrots and thought the pumpkins that came with stickers on! were really cool.

Troy and Jodie are a little older now, but still enjoy the fruits of our labour. Weeding isn’t that much fun anymore, but maybe when they’re in their 20’s/30’s?

One of the best things was that the allotment visit inspired school to set up their own allotment (with a little help from me) and it is still going strong!

If you start when you’re in your 20’s/30’s, you’ll be one of those “old people in overalls and flat caps” by the time you retire from the allotment!

I should still have the allotment by then, the “old boys” who used to be on the allotment before me, said it was a 50-year cycle!

As we only lived around the corner the allotment soon became our “second home”. The first year we actually grew any veg we had so much we could have supplied the whole of Cartmel. Our friends did get a bit fed up with the constant supply of courgettes, but loved the jam I made. Once we had children the allotment became a daily walk down. First they ate worms and soil, but soon found out that strawberries and raspberries were much tastier. They would just sit amongst the fruit and eat and eat.

As your readers may be aware, Wildfowling brings with it many challenges, dark early mornings and late nights, trudging across some of nature’s wildest terrain whatever the weather.

I submitted my PhD in 2004 and spent the next eight years as a sessional tutor in the History and Geography departments at Lancaster University teaching undergraduates - mostly first year students. I realised very quickly how unprepared the majority were for the huge learning curve they faced between sixth form and university study. I spent the first term of each year providing study skills: using the library, constructing academic essays, referencing and creating bibliographies.

Times Tables Challenge Final

Towards the end of term, local schools from the Cartmel Peninsula Primary Schools Consortium battled it out at the final of the Cartmel Peninsula Times Tables Challenge Quiz. The event, which took place at Grange Fell Golf Club, between teams of 4 pupils aged from 7-11 years from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Grange, Flookburgh, Leven Valley and Lindale Primary Schools. They were challenged about their knowledge of their times tables and their application. The Final was sponsored by Furness Building Society, Hadwins Motor Group, Higginson Butchers, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company and South Lakes Services. The winning school, scoring 108 points out of a possible 120, was Lindale receiving a school prize of £100 of maths resources with each pupil receiving a £20 voucher and a certificate. Second placed was Allithwaite winning £75 of resources and a £12 voucher for each pupil with Cartmel placed third and receiving £50 of resources and a £10 voucher for each pupil. Pupils in the remaining teams each received a certificate. The independent marker, Cathy Styles and the timer Chris Chew ensured the smooth running of the exciting Final. All the prizes were presented by Paul Crewdson, Hadwins Motor Group in the presence of 60 parents, supporters and governors.

Allithwaite C E School The end of term has been very hectic at Allithwaite School. All KS1 pupils enjoyed a very wet trip to Millerbeck railway at Staveley and, in spite of the pouring rain, had a wonderful time riding the train, paddling in the stream and watching the alpacas.

The end of year music concert was a celebration of the musical talents of the pupils who played ukuleles, guitars, keyboards, flutes and bassoon. The choir entertained guests by singing in Swahili. The PTA held a very successful disco for the leavers and they celebrated later in the week with a barbecue, bouncy castle and party games at the Community Centre. Year 6 pupils enjoyed being taught water safety in open Water Swimming at the Low Wood Hotel and Year 3 & 4 pupils had an overnight residential at Castle Head Centre learning how to kayak, build camp fires and toast marshmallows. The end of term was marked by an enjoyable Leavers service attended by families, parents, carers and governors where Year 6 pupils each received a leaving gift and a bible to celebrate their time at the school. Our Nursery is going from strength to strength but we can still welcome new pupils and new parents to join our Parent & toddler group every Monday. We are all looking forward to a happy and safe summer holiday.

What a wonderful few weeks we have had to finish off this Summer Term. Our Art’s week saw us out and about sketching and painting, and then all the children had the chance to work with Roma Short a ceramic artist.

LINDALE AIMING HIGH!

The younger children created seascapes and models of minibeasts, whilst the KS2 children made models of houses in the village. All year groups have had great outdoor experiences as part of our programme that builds on skills and level of challenge as the children progress through school. Reception and Year 1 have been learning all about water.

This has involved lots of experimenting and measuring as well as a day at Castle Head making boats to float down the stream. Year 2 and 3 spent a night at Castle Head and had fun making their own beds, a night walk and a hike up Hampsfell. Years 4 and 5 went to Malham in Yorkshire and developed their teamwork skills; including ghyll scrambling, climbing and preparing dinner.

Year 6 developed their leadership skills whilst staying in a remote bunk barn near Coniston. The term ended with our open afternoon, Leavers Service and picnic. We

celebrated the achievements of the year and especially the contribution that our Year 6 children have made throughout their time at Lindale.

Reflective Garden Over the course of the last two terms we, as a whole school community, have made a commitment to revisit, and develop, our understanding of the core Christian Values that lie at the foundation of Flookburgh CE School – ‘Respect, Hope, Compassion and Forgiveness’.

Throughout this time, we have worked in partnership with the Diocese of Carlisle to develop meaningful and purposeful reflective spaces within school. These special spaces have provided opportunities for all of our pupils to engage with, and develop, a greater spiritual understanding of the purpose of ‘reflection and contemplation’ and the impact that this has on their lives, and the lives of others. From Plant to Plate Courgette, Chilli & Basil Salad

he courtyard in front of the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop is currently home to herb and chilli plants grown by on site social enterprise, Growing Well, which are for sale. Their chilli plant variety (King of Fire) leaves little to the palate’s imagination, while marjoram plants offer a cool contrast with their sweet pine and citrus notes; perfect for lovers of more subtle flavours. Our recipe this month is a zingy dish that’s perfect for summer days and evenings:

Ingredients 6 courgettes, ends trimmed, cut into long strips 1-2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for dressing 1 fresh chilli, seeded, finely chopped sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ lemon, juice only handful fresh mint, roughly chopped handful fresh basil, roughly chopped

Method 1. Toss the courgette strips in a bowl with the olive oil (just enough to coat them), chilli, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Heat a ridged grill pan until smoking hot and griddle the courgettes in batches, about four minutes per side, being careful not to crowd the grill pan. They should be tender, but with a crunch in the middle. Don't be tempted to move the courgette while it is cooking or you won't get the chargrill marks across the flesh. Drain on kitchen paper. 3. Toss the griddled courgettes in the lemon juice, mint, basil and a good slug of your best extra virgin olive oil.

V J Day Service of Remembrance

St Charles

A generous offer by the parish Social Committee for a trip to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King in Liverpool was eagerly taken up by parishioners. The weather remained dry and the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all, except perhaps for those stuck in a lift for 45 minutes! Hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The Bishop's visitation went without a hitch – apart from the sound system. Two very full Masses were very supportive and some tasty cakes were a welcome if a figure-destroying repast! Eileen McKenna's funeral Mass was well attended – she was a lovely person and deserved a good 'send-off'. A tasty buffet at the Netherwood concluded a successful and extremely warm life celebration.

St Mary’s Church, Allithwaite will hold a Service to commemorate those who fought in the jungle, fighting not only the enemy but also battling against diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, rabies and dysentery. The service will take place on Sunday 16th August 2015 at 10.45am. The photo shows Rev. Fell, former vicar of Witherslack, who served in the Far East during WW2. United Reformed Church July has been quite a quiet month, with many people on holiday. However, some of us enjoyed a very pleasant social evening with our Methodist friends which included an excellent ‘Faith Supper’. The Traveller’s Tales evenings are continuing and proving popular, and our monthly walks are managing to miss the showers. On Sunday, 13th July, we were sad to say goodbye to Cynthia

and Alan Ashworth, who have worked so hard in many ways in our Church for 15 years. They are moving to be nearer family and we wish them well, although we will miss them. We are looking forward to an evening with our friends from the other churches in the South Lakes Group of the URC at Windermere. It will be good to get together to celebrate the anniversary of the formation of the Group.

Two further deaths make one sensitive to one's mortality. However, a very pleasant and

meaningful wedding service for Andrea and Alex kept life in perspective

Pins in the woollen figure should be working soon! Letters to our MP concerning Global Warming and the Assisted Suicide Bill have received prompt and interesting answers. However, life is a God-given gift I believe and who are we to end it? – Compassion, love must be considered but because we might do it does not make it right. My ideas for the lido would be to have the area that was the pool full of water spouts coming out of the concrete like you see in city centres. Children love running in and out of them and getting thoroughly wet. They could be worked by solar panels and I don’t think would be very expensive to install or maintain. When the water spouts are off the area could be used for outdoor entertainment. The area where the diving board is is a wonderful viewpoint over the bay and I suggest a 2 storey building there incorporating the diving board if it is listed. The building could be a multi purpose area for art gallery , local history displays, environmental displays, with maybe a cafe upstairs with a stunning view over the bay and telescopes for viewing wildlife. In regards to Mr Dearden’s letter last month. I’m a young person and I would like to say that for a sustainable community we have to have balance. In Grange, at the moment we have do not have balance with an ageing community. I understand people’s fears over the two new sites. However, with Tricketts Field it’s not being used. In my opinion, I think it is inevitable that Tricketts Field will be houses and hopefully affordable ones at that.

We served refreshments,with the money raised going to Simigaon School in Nepal. It was very busy and we couldn't have done this without the help of our friends Sylvia,Issy and Chris travelling 80 miles to help us. A Big Thank You to them. I have reached the end of my tether and my blood has boiled enough with these deliveries that are taking place early in the morning mainly to the co op, it was 5.30 am this morning when there was a delivery, add that with an individual who has no consideration whatsoever for the noise he is making with those rubbish little trolleys with the plastic caster wheels they seem to wheel everywhere, banging the goods back in the lorry, gone has my compassion for "oh well they have a job to do" as these drivers/ staff as far as I’m concerned just don’t care, The Co Op and Grange Bakery need to be told that the deliveries need to be done at reasonable hours, if they cannot respect this and the residents / visItors alike then there should be times allocated to them and restrictions put in place to stop this mindless behaviour. When is a limit really a limit?

We have looked at help available for unpaid carers and the needs assessment process for those needing the care. The last two Law Talks in this series look at the new financial limits which The Care Act introduces from April next year. How will it affect what you will pay for your care? The Government said ‘The aim of the funding reforms is to create a fairer partnership between the person and the state, to protect those with the highest needs from catastrophic costs and to offer everyone much needed peace of mind around the risks of needing care and support.. Have they achieved it, I wonder? Today, if you have assets below £13,250, you only pay your income towards your care. The rest of your capital is protected. That limit is increasing to £17,000. Between £13,250 and £24,250, you pay a ‘tariff income’ of £1 per week for every £250 you have between the limits. If you have £24,250 or more, then you are a self-funder. Thank you and goodbye. In my view that is fundamentally unfair for those who have saved for a house and investments which they want to pass on to their children. ‘I’ll tell you what’, says the government, ‘we will increase the limit to £27,000. And if you own a house we will increase it to £118,000’. Sounds good, doesn’t it? ‘But,’ says the government, whilst we ignore that £118,000 of assets, we will assess you as if you get income from them of £1 per week for every £250 of capital between £17,000 and £118,000’. So if your house is worth £80,000 and you have £30,000 of savings, you will be assessed as having to contribute your actual income PLUS £372 weekly tariff income towards your care costs. ‘But hang on’ you say ‘I only have pensions of £200 per week. Where am I going to get another £372 a week from?’ ‘Don’t worry’, says the government, ‘you can defer it until you die. And THEN we will take it from your house.’ So, despite all the changes, little has really changed and planning ahead remains fundamentally important if you want to protect the things that you worked so hard for. Come and see us for an in-depth discussion about your own circumstances, how the new rules would affect you and what planning would be appropriate for you. SOCIETY ROUND-UP RNLI Grange over Sands Lifeboat Branch held their annual Flag Day on Saturday, 18th July, when the people in town that day kindly donated £467.18 to the RNLI. We are very grateful indeed to the kind and generous people of Grange who supported the house t house collection in the previous week, when £1,451.62 was raised for the charity. Very many thanks to all our Collectors, and everyone who continues to support the Lifeboats.

Grange Garden Society The Society met on June 19th to hear Dr Julia Hoggard give a most fascinating talk entitled Gardening for Bees: It was amazing to find out how many different types of bee inhabit these islands and that the Honey Bee is an introduction and a competitor of our native bees. We learnt how to identify Wasps and Hoverflies and what type of flowering plants our bees find most attractive - bearing in mind they do not see the same colour spectrum as humans. Dr Hoggard left us planning to have more simple and open flower forms and trumpet shapes, such as those of Foxgloves and Aquilegia. Of course flowers with perfume are also attractors and colours in shades of pinks, purples and yellows are particular favourites. A Plant sale and Coffee Morning on Saturday July 11th will be followed on Friday the 17th by our monthly meeting. Les Foden will give lots of ideas and tips in his presentation Gardening for Everyone. The talk on Friday 21st August will be Life in the Faroe Islands by Barbara and Peter Ramsden. Visitors are welcome at all our meetings.

Grange Forum 13th August is the date for our trip to the Theatre on the Lake, Keswick to see John Buchan’s ‘The Thirtynine Steps’. It is an amusing and fast-paced new production of the popular West End play. The Grand Theatre, Blackpool, is the venue for our trip to see The Full Monty, an amusing musical slant on an award winning production. An Illuminations tour is included. The date for this is 16th September at 7.30pm. Salford Quays’ Lowry Theatre, 16th December at 2pm, for one of the greatest musicals of all time ‘The Sound of Music’. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI On Tuesday July 7th, members of the Allithwaite and Cartmel WI enjoyed afternoon tea, after the business section, prepared and served by Committee members. This followed the wonderful entertainment provided by "Little Island Music", a trio of lively young girls from the Ulverston area, who performed their own material in addition to some popular favourites.Their harmonies were both haunting and exciting. Reports were given by members who had attended the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and the AGM held at the Royal Albert Hall. Tuesday, September 1st will be the date of the next meeting, 2pm at Allithwaite Community Centre, when the speaker Mrs Pat Drysdale will explain to us all why "every picture tells a story". Lower Holker W.I. At our July meeting Sally Farrington gave us a most interesting talk all about tea. It was a very informal evening with all the members (and one gentleman visitor) asking many questions about all the flavours and types. It was a real eye-opener, and the evening closed with tea and biscuits. On Wednesday 2nd September (6:30pm) in Flookburgh Village Hall we are holding a "Ladies Fashion Show" by Kitty Brown from Carnforth.

Tickets (£3.00 including refreshments) will be available from the Chemist and Post Office in Flookburgh Square, or at the door on the day. After the Show, there will be an opportunity to buy ladies clothes and accessories.

Grange Soroptimists At the Club meeting on 7th July Justine McCoy from the Alzheimer’s Society spoke about dementia and provided a useful insight into the problems sufferers and carers experience. The talk was thought provoking and members were issued with “dementia friend badges” indicating improved understanding and awareness.

The “Spot the Dynamic S” competition continues, looking for the hidden Soroptimist logos in Grange. Entry forms are available from the Information Centre, Johnston’s jewellers and Soroptimist members. The winner receives £20 and proceeds go to Soroptimist charities.

Plans continue for the Dementia Open Day due to be held on Oct 22nd in the Methodist Hall.

Grange Rotary We are now into the new Rotary Year. President Helen Frain-Kaye took over from Colin Wilkinson and one of her first tasks was to present Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to Treasurer, Ted Taylor, and Secretary, Sue Wilkinson. Both were unsuspecting recipients. The first Speaker Meeting was Martin Lewes who gave an insightful talk about life as a Radio Cumbria presenter. Immediate Past President Colin delivered two prizes for ‘The Best Thank you Letter’ this week, following the distribution of dictionaries. The winners so far are Sophie from Lindale C of E School and Henry from Leven Valley C of E Primary. All the letters were a joy to read and it was difficult finding a winner. The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 7th of July. The guest tutor was Maggie Hickman-Smith who led an intensive session entitled “Get Plastered”. Using a mixture of paste and paint, fabric was lightly coated and etched into or imprinted with a variety of implements to provide a textured surface. Once dry the pieces were coloured and really came to life ready to be used, with further embellishment, for a variety of projects. There was a good turnout of members for this much anticipated class which proved to be a most enjoyable workshop. There is no meeting in August, the next meeting will be on Tuesday 1st of September. Grange WI Marilyn Hale gave a fascinating talk about making glass jewellery at our last meeting. Members then had a fun time making their own pendants and brooches which Marilyn then took home to fire in her kiln. Members also agreed to mark the centenary of the WI by planting a tree in Park Road Gardens. Our August talk has the mysterious title of ‘An extramarital affair’. Grange Probus Club On 13th July Susan Wilson gave a talk entitled “Buck Ruxton” Murder, Mystery and a vital ingredient. Buck Ruxton, a doctor in Lancaster in the nineteen thirties, was born in India and studied medicine in Edinburgh where he met his wife, Isabelle. After spending time in London, he settled in Lancaster with his wife, children and maid called Mary. Although a much respected Doctor, neighbours reported violent quarrels and when his wife and maid were not seen for some time, suspicions were aroused. In 1935, two ladies saw a woman’s arm in a stream. Further searches revealed more female body parts over a wide area. Experts believed they had been cut by someone with medical experience. Fingerprints were identified as those of the maid, Mary. After bloodstains were found in his

Witherslack WI In the absence of Pauline Hodgson, Ann Walshaw and Caroline Blee were in charge of the July Meeting. Becks Cooper came to ask for support for a fund raising event for Dean Barwick School in October. Plans were made for the Classic Coach outing to Hawes in August. Calendars and Diaries were available to purchase.The speaker Elaine Towler explained why exercise is good for you, and how every part of the body benefits. Cartmel Art Society Our members have recently enjoyed three lovely outdoor painting sessions at Holehird Gardens, Cartmel and Arnside. But now preparation for our Annual Art Exhibition to be held in the village hall from Tuesday 11th August until Saturday 15th August is well on the way. Paintings, including some local scenes, will be on display to view and for sale. There will be a variety of work covering watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel and graphite. In addition there will be the ever popular cards, some art books and mounted, unframed pictures for sale. During the week a painting donated by a member is to be raffled to raise funds for a local cause and there will be an opportunity to vote for your favourite picture in the Exhibition. Newton & Field Broughton WI At the meeting on July 8th members heard an interesting talk about the AGM in London given by the area representative who had not been to an AGM previously. Other business was also discussed. Then followed a talk on the Pendle Witches by Terry Bond. He had worked for some time at Lancaster Castle where he became interested in the witches. This was a very interesting insight into the various families who had lived in the Pendle area and who had been tried as witches and then hanged the next day at Lancaster Castle in August 1612. It was a thought provoking talk. There is no meeting in August. Members have been encouraged to bake, make presents etc for sale at the annual fund raising event at Cartmel Show on August 5th. Goods for sale need to be taken to Cartmel Village Hall for packing and pricing between 6-7.30pm on Tuesday 4th August.

Grange and District U3A The June summer event, a train/launch/ lunch ‘combo’ from Haverthwaite, was very successful with 80 plus members attending and a warm sunny day to celebrate our 15th anniversary. We look forward to the next elements of the anniversary , a tea dance at the Cumbria Grand Hotel in July and an exhibition of all things U3A in Grange library between 28 August and 12 September. The interest groups have been very active; Local Explorers have been to Milnthorpe to look at aspects of the slave trade, Out & About have had a successful holiday in Scotland, whilst the cycling, geology, walking and birdwatching groups continued with their programmes. The recently founded cinema group now has a programme of films and will meet on every third Saturday at the Keg and Kitchen, Grange. The home/ venue based groups continue to meet. Forthcoming events include a trip to Chester Zoo, a jazz evening at Yew Tree Barn and a ceilidh in the Victoria Hall in October, a four day excursion along Hadrian’s Cycleway in September by some of the cycle group and film and theatre nights at the Heron Theatre, Beetham.A full list activities can be found on the website at: u3asites.org.uk/grange .

Grange Fell Golf Club Our season continues, on a course that is in really good condition. Our thanks go to Brad, our Greenkeeper, for all his efforts on the course. The views of the Lancashire coast and our beautiful fells have been outstanding too.

Medal 4 was won by Lesley Wilson. Lady Captain’s Day dawned hot and humid - too hot and humid for some players who had to ‘retire’ gracefully! The winner was Carol Campbell who also won the Alan Waters Mixed Foursomes with Captain Les Ollerton as her partner. Hilary Austin and David Robb were runners up. Medal 5 was won by Hilary Austin. Ladies who visited Morecambe Golf Club for their Open competition had a very enjoyable day. Over the last week we’ve played the Molly Davy Scratch competition over 2 days. The winner was Ronnie Hall, with Ruth Waring as runner up. The net competition was won by Ellie Woodburn.

Civic Society Report The last month has been very busy, Cumbria Connect Open Day, arranged in conjunction with the society, was valuable and successful. Open Gardens day was held on the Sunday 12th. The gardens looked spectacular, the weather was good. Thanks to all those who opened their gardens, also helpers providing and serving refreshments to the many visitors. All groups have been busy preparing the town and gardens for the Cumbria in Bloom judging. The town looked beautiful on the day and we also had a glorious sunny day for the judges visit.

On Thursday 16th members enjoyed a visit to Lancaster, with an interesting and informative tour of the city in the morning and around the castle later in the day.

Saturday 11th was Captain's Day. All the members who played had a marvellous day and evening. The main winner on the day was Steve T Wilson with 44pts winning on a card play off from John Redman and Malcolm Higginson. Ladies 9 hole winner was Carol Campbell.

Coffee Club June saw a visit from Juliet Burd and Julie Gregson, who with Kathy Houghton from Cartmel went as a medical team to Bombo, Uganda. In 2007 Pastor John Bunjo set up a primary school and ‘Children of Hope Uganda’ was born with plans to develop other facilities including a medical clinic, at present there is one doctor for 25,000 patients. The team of 13 from UK went to support the primary school of 69 children , aged up to 16, and 4 teachers. Most girls leave school early when their ‘dirty’ periods exclude them, but with aid of the team’s instruction on using their ‘Washable Sanitary Cases’ they can continue schooling like the boys. Subsistence farmers earn an average £2.50 daily. Our medical team saw 400 patients daily and ran health, dental and eye clinics and offered basic physiotherapy care for the 23 days they were there. Their fascinating talk was wonderfully illustrated.

On September 15th Nigel Swinford, founder of the New English Orchestra, will share about ‘Music – Food of Love?’ anticipating the NEO visit to Allithwaite on October 17th. He will speak at 10.30am at Abbot Hall Hotel, preceded by coffee at 10am. All welcome.

Grange Lions Members enjoyed a successful day and wonderful weather at the Edwardian Festival. Earlier we held a street collection in aid of Kids Safe. This National charity provides guidance for children, schools and parents on Internet safety and mobile safety. The £176 raised will be well received.

We promoted a VOCE concert at St John’s church Flookburgh on Saturday 20th June. A wonderful evening from this "class act" with St Mary's Hospice and St John’s church the main beneficiaries . Our annual 5 a side football tournament was enjoyed by over 50 children who each received a commemorative medal and Lion Bar. Flookburgh junior school won the "Stonecraft" Trophy plus £100 for sports equipment. Our Charity Golf Day is on Friday 7th August at Grange Fell Golf Club. All the afternoon and evening tee times have been taken, however there are a few tee times available for morning play. To book your tee time ring Peter Clough 32048. All proceeds will go to St Mary's Hospice.

Grange Bridge Club At the end of June, Grange Bridge Club hosts a Simultaneous Pairs Charity Event, in which the same hands are played at Bridge clubs throughout Cumbria. This year a total of £550 was raised for St. Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston. In July, Cumbria beat Lancashire in an intercounty match. The Grange team of John MacClachlan, David Strawbridge, Alan Anderson and Sam Norman had the highest overall score.

Earlier in the year there were other successes for Grange members at county level. John MacClachlan and Robin Rose won the Westmorland County Pairs. David Strawbridge and John Farmer, with Kendal team-mates, won the Westmorland County Teams.

The winners of the Grange Summer Handicap Competition, played over two months, were

Jean Meadowcroft and Eric Morrell. Grange is a very popular club and meets on Tuesday evenings at the Netherwood Hotel at 6.45pm. Visiting players are always welcome. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society Magna Carta: history …. And more history! Following the huge success of the lecture by Dr David Starkey, the Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society (CPLHS) has arranged for Dr Alan Crosby to present a talk at Cartmel Priory on 7th September beginning at 7.30 p.m. entitled: “King John was not a Good Man – Understanding Magna Carta on its 800th Anniversary”. Admission will be £2.50 at the door. Monday 28th September is Local History Day and, as part of the five-day Magna Carta Celebrations, Dr Sarah Rose, Lancaster University, will give a short lecture at 11.30am on “Magna Carta and the Northern Barons”. At 2.00pm and again at 4.00pm Stuart Harling (Chairman of CPLHS) will give a brief talk on “The Impact of Magna Carta in Cartmel from 1215”. Each talk will be followed by a guided walk around the village with members of the CPLHS. Flower Pageant ticket holders for that day, for whom admission is free, will take priority for the limited places available for each event.

Arnside & Arnside Knott WI At the July meeting of Arnside & Arnside Knott WI members heard a very interesting and informative account of the varied range of work done by the Salvation Army. A report was given by Jill Woods (Silverdale) delegate at the A.G.M. in London. The Strawberry Tea afternoon was successful. The picnic on the Knott will be on Monday 17th August, meet at the W.I.Hall at 5pm. The next meeting will be on 14th September.

Grange Garden Society The July meeting of the Grange Garden Society was a talk by Les Foden entitled “Gardening for Everyone”. Les started his presentation with a series of recommendations for tools and chemicals, which he has found most useful over many years of gardening. Spraying the outside of tubs with WD40 to deter snails, using old tights for tree ties and storing onions, and wearing cut-off wellie legs as arm guards when working in the shrubbery being some of the more novel ideas. The jokes flowed freely and further advice was supported by a slide show dealing with dahlias, chrysanths, fuchsias and other aspects of gardening. The Coffee Morning, Plant Sale and Raffle, held at the URC Hall on 11th July proved very popular - particularly the Homemade Cake Stall. 21st August’s meeting will be “Life in the Faroe Islands by Barbara and Peter Ramsden” and on Friday 18th September we will learn about “The Versatility of Herbs” from Hellen Shipton Smith, of `Hellen’s Herbs. All meetings for the summer are at 7.30pm in the United Reform Church Hall, Kents Bank Road, followed by refreshments. Visitors are always welcome.

Arnside Horticultural Society Are holding their Annual Summer Show on 29th August at 2-4 p.m. in the WI Hall on Orchard Road. There will also be exhibits of cookery, handicrafts, art and photographs in the Methodist Schoolroom next to the Hall. Admission is 50p and there will be a Garden Stall and refreshments as well as a raffle.

Adult Education Hopefully by now you will have been able to read the new brochure, which is widely available throughout the Peninsula area and incorporates both Cartmel and Ulverston courses, in one glossy brochure. The brochure will last for the entire academic year, from September 1st through to July 2016. You will also receive a county wide publication the week beginning the 17th August which covers every centre across Cumbria and these advertise classes up to Christmas only.

We have fully updated our website, to enable people to access course information sheets and also to enrol by sending us their form online, which has some significant changes on, so please ensure you complete it fully in order for us to continue receiving public subsidy. Feedback suggests that you LOVE the new website and its highly pictorial format. This has been done by Debbie Parkinson, who manages our social media campaign and we encourage you to like us on Twitter or Facebook as we regularly update courses and events. The office has now officially shut for the summer and re-open September 1st, but during the shutdown period, we will reply to emails and also come in and check the 24 hour answer machine so do carry on enrolling by post and email. We are still seeking a tutor to run our GCSE English course from late September 2015. Our enrolment day at Grange library l am assured will go ahead even if the library is shut, as we will gain access to one of the doors but until nearer the time we will not know if there will be a skeleton staff there on the 2nd September. We have a host of new tutors such as Stella Adams Schofield, well known for her embroidery and patchwork skills; Colin Reynolds- professional photographer; Jennifer Street- running hoop dancing and circus skills; Clare Taylor- adult ballet; an enhanced language selection including ESOL, German and Polish for Beginners; Karen Lloyd -running a number of creative writing classes and Cherrie Trelogan (whose work is featured on the front cover of the brochure- the eye and visual journal), running art appreciation and learn to draw and sketch.
