Changes to bin collection days on the way
Letter from the Editor Looking for a space in the large car park by Grange Plant Centre is proving difficult, which is a sure sign that there are plenty of visitors in the area.
The day that the majority of South Lakeland residents’ waste and recycling is collected will be changing. The changes will happen in two phases. Areas served by the Kendal depot will get any changes to collection days in September 2015, and areas served by the Ulverston depot will get any changes to collection days in November 2015.
Hopefully this is translating into brisk trade for the local shops, cafes and businesses. We were contacted recently (see letters page) saying what great value the new crazy golf and prom facilities are, in comparison to other Lakeland hotspots.... So although it’s far too early to be thinking about Christmas (unless you are a restaurant or hotel owner looking to get tables reserved, or your name is Santa), we are planning a Grange Now Christmas gift guide for local retailers, to tempt readers to shop local this year. If you have products you wish to advertise in the gift guide, why not get in touch. Not to be missed events (and they are happening almost as soon as we come out) ‘Voce’ are back by popular demand and playing in Grange on Friday 28th. Meanwhile over at Holker this weekend it’s hot stuff with the Chilli Fest, closely followed on Monday by an outdoor theatre performance of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny. Sunday 30th is also Prom Art day, and of course don't miss the Magna Carta celebrations Friday 25th Tuesday 29th September. Tickets are available from the Grange Now office. Welcome to Sarah Stephenson, our new team member joining us on 1st September. Thanks to all the team who consistently pull out all the stops to deliver a great community newspaper. Sharon, Kerstin, Glenn and Chris p.s. Don't miss Magna Carta - Tickets still available.

The Grange area falls in the middle of the two depots’ collection boundaries, which means that some areas in the Grange Now circulation area will be getting changes in September, while others will be in November. As a guide, SLDC has provided the following breakdown of collections changes in the Grange Now circulation area: September changes (Kendal depot): Witherslack, Cartmel Fell (and all areas to the east) whilst the November changes (Ulverston depot): Grange, Cartmel, Cark, Lindale, Meathop, Ayside, Staveley-in-Cartmel, High Newton, (and all areas to the west). The council will be writing to every household in the district to advise whether their collection day will be changing. The letters will arrive in a special green envelope – so the council is urging residents to look out for the

green envelope and make sure they open it and read the letter to find out if their collection day is changing. The letter will explain in more detail about any new collection day, the date when the new collections will start and will include a new calendar with the collection dates. Not every resident in every area will be affected, but the majority will, so it is important that residents keep an eye out for their green envelope to find out if the changes will affect them. Residents served by the Kendal depot will be in the first phase and will get their letters in early September. The new collection days will start in the week beginning 21 September. Residents served by the Ulverston depot will be in the second phase and will get their letters in mid-October. The new collection days will start in the week beginning 2 November.

Investment Matters By Andrew Troughton APFS
The Summer Budget saw George Osborne present his first Budget as Chancellor of a Conservative government. The Budget "theme" was to ensure economic security by putting the public finances in order and setting out a bold plan for a more productive, balanced economy.

The Budget announced many changes, including the introduction of the ‘main residence nil rate band’ for inheritance tax, a change to how dividend income is taxed, increases to personal tax allowances and higher rate tax bands, and a reduction in corporation tax. There were also changes to pension’s tax relief and confirmation of the reduced lifetime allowance of £1M from 6 April 2016. For inheritance tax there will be a ‘main residence nil rate band’ introduced on 6 April 2017, when the allowance will start at £100,000 per individual and rise by £25,000 per tax year until it reaches £175,000 by 6 April 2020. There are certain caveats to the additional allowance, including this allowance being tapered away for estates over £2million. From 6 April 2016 the dividend tax credit will be abolished and a new annual dividend tax allowance of £5,000 will be introduced. Dividend income above £5,000 per annum will be tax at either 7.5%, 32.5% or 38.1% for basic, higher and additional rate tax payers respectively.
Grange now | SEPTEMBER 2015 - Next deadline 18th September
For personal tax, the tax-free allowance is currently £10,600 and will now increase to £11,000 in 201617 and to £11,200 in 2017-18. The threshold at which people start paying 40p income tax will rise to £43,000 in 2016-17 and to £43,600 in 2017-18.
Currently corporation tax stands at 20% (on profits), however, the rate will be cut to 19% in 2017 and then 18% in 2020. Again what the budget always highlights is that the world of finance constantly evolves; the importance of monitoring the changes in taxation and legislation is equally as important as reviewing the investments you hold in order to provide the best possible overall return to you.
The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Danger on the sands On a hot sunny afternoon on 8th August, Bay Search and Rescue (BAYSAR) were called out no fewer than 5 times in less than half an hour. This was due to people venturing out onto the sands without first checking if it was safe. Mike Davis from BaySAR would ask people to: ”please check the tide times before setting out on the sands. We cannot stress strongly enough how quickly the tide comes in and within minutes people are left stranded. People need to be aware of the dangers of the sands and the tide times before they go onto them.” There were several eyewitnesses to the family on the sands with one resident telling Grange Now: "I saw the family really far out and they had a dog running around off the lead. This is incredibly dangerous as a dog could so easily run into quicksand and then an adult gets into trouble trying to rescue it.” I’m sorry to say we’ve seen it all before
and every once in a while one of these stories has a tragic ending. The various incidents on the 8th of August saw BaySAR, the police, the RNLI, the coastguard and the fire engine turning out. So please, if you are thinking of venturing out onto the sands please make sure it’s safe to do so and if you’re not sure, please don’t do it.

Further changes to the bus times
Stagecoach went on to say that this change has however allowed them to extend the 14:35 Cartmel to
Kendal service, so that it will now run every Monday to Friday, rather than only in School Holidays, providing a useful additional journey when the Travellers’ Choice 532 is not running. This will start from 21st September. Grange Now spoke to Dallam School and they told us that their school service will now be operated by Travellers’ Choice.

Former Cartmel Priory pupil wins top award
Former Cartmel Priory student, Alice Longmire, has won the prestigious Young Farmers’ Junior Member of the Year award, one of five awards won by Cumbria Young Farmers at a recent ceremony.
Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree… St Paul’s Church, Grange, will once again be hosting the Christmas Tree Festival this year. The festival is a wonderful event, and has raised much needed funds for local charities. The trees will be in place for the Grange Extravaganza Weekend and displayed throughout the Christmas period.
St Paul’s have promised to let us know in time for the October issue what this year’s theme will be and they will be inviting local groups and charities to participate. This will be a great opportunity to showcase your group’s activities. èè If you wish to reserve your place now, please contact Christine on 32013 or c.harr45@yahoo.co.uk
U3A - Anniversary Exhibition STILL IN SHOCK
Alice with her trophy
Alice, of Lowick YFC, is vice chairman of Cumbria’s Youth Forum and she fought off stiff competition from 6 other finalists. Judges were very impressed with her answers about: ‘what being a young farmer means to her’ and ‘how to bring in new members’. Alice, 18, said of her award: “I’m still in shock, I can’t really believe it! I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet! My parents were members and won competitions at county level but never at national level, so I’m really proud.”
Showing her maturity, Alice went on to say: “People can sometimes have the wrong perception about Young Farmers. It’s a lot more than standing in fields and working with tractors. You get great opportunities that people don’t always see and that’s why they don’t necessarily want to join. They get the wrong impression. We need to show more people the amazing opportunities that come with being a Young Farmer and let them know that you don’t have to work in agriculture to join.”
One door closes, another opens. There’s still a local garage offering the service you need.
As part of Grange and District U3A’s 15th anniversary celebrations, an exhibition is being held at Grange library from 29th August to Friday 11th September. U3A is affiliated to the Third Age Trust, but is a thriving independent organisation. 2015 is the 15th anniversary of its foundation and they currently have 380 members. General meetings are held in the Victoria Hall, Grange on the third Tuesday of each month when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over coffee and a biscuit but the main activities take place in the 35 interest groups which are co-ordinated by members. The groups range from the sedentary and cerebral (lunch club, countdown, languages, bridge, cinema buffs and wine appreciation),to the creative (crafts, writing for pleasure and digital photography) and the active (gardening, walking, geology, cycling, table tennis and badminton).
Our 15th anniversary year has been celebrated by a number of events: a train/launch/lunch trip on the Haverthwaite Railway and Windermere, a tea dance at the Cumbria Grand Hotel and the planting of cherry trees in the U3A-maintained bed on Grange promenade. The final event is to be an exhibition in Grange over Sands library between 29 August and 11 September 2015. This will comprise an audio-visual presentation of the history and activities of the U3A and some of the groups will display their ‘wares’. The Family and Social History Group will display the results of research into the histories WW1 servicemen listed on Grange war memorial.
èè Information about the Third Age Trust and Grange and District U3A will be available in the library to enable the curious to learn more about us. Information about Grange and District U3A can always be found at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange .

A night on the tiles Do you, like me, alternate between states of despondency and irritation about the incorrect use of English? I should, of course, not get worked up and accept that language is evolving and always has done, otherwise we would still be speaking “caveman”. This is presumably why, Hasbro, the makers of the board game Scrabble announced in May that a “shed load” of modern colloquialisms have been added to their official lexicon, the Collins dictionary. Is this a “vowel deed” or something less sinister that should be embraced? Players can now delve into a new arsenal of words, including ridic (ridiculous) slang expressions such as bezzy (best friend), lolz (laugh out loud lots), twerking (provocative dance), cakeages (charges in a restaurant for serving cake brought in from outside), lotsa (lots of), obvs (obviously) and shootie (a type of shoe that covers the ankle).

Fear not. Traditionalists and oldies can fight back using words that are now out-of-date or obscure, and so largely unknown to younger players. For example: jo (a prostitute), muzjik (an old expression for a Russian peasant), cazique (a native chief), faqir (a holy man) quixotry (a visionary scheme or thought), jukebox (a coin operated record player) and zax (a singleedge sword of ancient Scandinavia and a tool for cutting and punching nail holes in roofing slates). Progression Solicitors is ten years old And we’re celebrating by opening a new office in Grangeover-Sands. Join us at 4pm on Thursday 24 September at our new site in the former St Paul’s Parish Hall on Kents Bank Road for afternoon tea and Prosecco. We will provide a range of legal services from our Grange office including: wills and probate, elderly client advice, conveyancing, commercial

We look forward to welcoming you to our new office on 24 September 2015.
John and Kate are reunited
Last month we ran an article about a gentleman from Hong Kong who was trying to trace a woman, who had a huge impact on his life when he visited Grange as a boy. John Wong was sent to England when he was 10 years old and, under the tutelage of Kate Thornley, he learned English, but unfortunately they lost touch. We are delighted to report that Kate got in touch and this is her account: I read “Do you know Kate?” (August Grange Now) at least twice before
fully realising it was actually about me! To say I was amazed does not cover it: I was also intrigued that John Wong (from Hong Kong) had used such a clever way to find out if I was still around. Here I am, not Thornley now, but Bolton. Most people know me as Kath (but truth to tell I prefer Kate). John was a delightful pupil but he must have been homesick and anxious about his new life in England – he was ten years old. He had a most engaging personality and was full of fun – we giggled together a lot! He wore short trousers – the norm in 1966 – and his legs were long and gangly, his hair dark and short. He thought it very funny that ‘Thornley’ sounded quite like ‘Donkey’ and he
teased me about this. His lessons were, I am sure, a happy carefree time for both of us.
I e-mailed John soon after the surprise had sunk in and now we have regular contact, catching up on things.
He will be in England in September and is including time in Cartmel, when we will meet. After forty-nine years what can I say? Life is certainly not boring and there is always the unexpected!” John has been incredibly kind and has donated a generous sum to both the Connie and Joe fund and Breast Cancer care as a thank you for the article.

to help them achieve their potential.
The council is urging parents of children starting school in September to remember to apply for free school meals, even though since last year all children in reception and years 1 and 2 have been automatically entitled. This is because if eligible parents do not apply, they miss out on a free school clothing grant provided by the council worth £25 (or £35 for secondary pupils) and their child’s school misses out on a £1300 Pupil Premium payment from government; these payments allow schools to provide extra support to pupils
Parents could be eligible if they are receiving benefits; including income support, Job Seekers Allowance and Universal Credit. Applying is simple and can be done online, there’s no paperwork and eligibility is checked electronically. The whole process takes around five minutes. Once approved, the council sends parents a voucher which they redeem for cash at the Post Office, giving them the choice of where to buy the school clothes for their children. Cllr Clare Feeney-Johnson, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning, said: “It’s so important that eligible parents continue to apply for free school meals

even though all infants now automatically get one. If they don’t apply, not only are they missing out on help with the cost of their child’s uniform, but their child’s school will also miss out on thousands of pounds. “It’s because we know many families are struggling that we continue to fund free school clothing grants despite the cuts to our budget – it’s about our commitment to helping children and families who really need it. It would be such a shame if they missed out when the application is so quick and straightforward.”

OUTDOOR & ACTIVE!
Lindale Bowlers are triumphant On Wednesday 12th August, a beautiful summer’s evening, the final of the Kendal and district bowling knockout doubles cup was played at Abbot Hall, Kendal. The two finalists were Netherfield A and Lindale A.
Transfer window still open! The Grange & District Junior Football Club has a team for all school years beginning at year 2 (under 7's) to year 13 (under 18's). This year will be the first year they are entering a team in the under 18's league. They told us: We have around 120 girls and boys registered within the club and keep fees to a minimum (£40 per year for first child and £35 for subsequent), this covers registration to the Kent Valley League and helps covers costs of running teams as the setup of a new team involves training of a coach and new kit and equipment plus constant upgrading and replacement throughout the years. All coaches and committee members give their time on a voluntary basis and we are grateful for the support of Cartmel Priory School for the use of their facilities and also Johnstons Jewellers of Grange, A&S Builders and Wareing & Son Plumbers for their support and Sponsorship over the past couple of years. We always looking for new sponsors whether it be for kits, trophies or equipment.
All the teams have a Level 1 qualified coach (at least) attached to them who are fully DBS Checked (every 3 years). The club holds full Charter Standard which is an accreditation awarded to clubs who are judged rigorously to be well run and sustainable, which prioritise child protection, quality coaching and implementation of the Respect programme. New members are welcome at any time throughout the year, from new players to members of the community who have skills to offer either in coaching or with the running of the club. We are sad to lose Mike Barclay this year who has been with the club for over 10 years and who has fulfilled the role of club Treasurer for the last 8 years but are pleased to welcome Peter Mallinson this year who has agreed to take on the Treasurer role going forward. èè Enquiries Paul Garnett: garnorgarno@aol.com / 07971 310 280.
The result was a 2-2 draw, but Lindale were the winners on aggregate 61=49. Lindale’s team comprised of Captain Bill Keating, Ann Anderson, Mike Atkinson, Shane Barron, Ron Hathorn, Mark Heywood, Laraine Keating and Barbara Pettit. The cup was presented by Ernie from Burneside who was the tournament referee.
What is Wild in the Park all about? Grange playing fields is the new home to enthusiastic personal trainer, Emily Luke. I went along on Sunday to see her putting a fair few locals through their paces.
‘Wild in the Park’ was created by ‘Wild Training’ and offers a new and exciting personal training system which promotes progression in group outdoor exercise, and uses some of the most innovative equipment available: battle ropes, parallettes, kettlebells, Bulgarian bags.. the list goes on. There is also a maximum number of 10 per class, giving you a more personal coaching experience. As a member, you can attend 3 of the 7 sessions each week, as well as access to a secure online client area which is loaded with helpful information to keep you on track. Reverse Rett
An article by Grange resident Lis Christopher
Last year my granddaughter Molly was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome – a genetic disorder which affects 1:10,000 girls. Girls develop normally for their first 18 months, then lose the use of their hands, their speech and their mobility, and risk severe health complications including epilepsy and scoliosis. Molly is a beautiful, happy little girl trapped in a body that struggles to obey signals from her brain. We are realising just how bright she is now that she is using an eye-gaze computer to communicate with family, friends and teachers at Grange School. She absolutely loves school and the staff and children have made her so welcome.
I have set myself the challenge of raising awareness about Molly’s condition and fundraising for Reverse Rett, a Manchester-based charity which supports research into treatments and potential cures for Rett Syndrome. As secretary of the Old Time Dance Club I asked my dancing friends to help with fundraising events and I've been so touched by their support.
European Seniors Tour Professional Golfer, Gary Wolstenholme, returned to Grange Fell Golf Club to play in the Grange Lions Club Charity Open. The Fell golf course is where, as a young boy, Gary first learned to swing a golf club.
To make a four, Gary was joined by fellow Professionals Andrew Pickering and Chris Coates and golf administrator, Margaret Bebington, all from Carus Green Golf Club in Kendal. Gary carded 5 birdies and 2 eagles whilst shooting 61, to help his team into 3rd place on the day.
It’s all going on at North Lonsdale Tennis Club. Whether you are an adult, a junior, division level player or just happy to have a friendly match, you will find your ‘match’ at this club.
There is a concert at the United Reform Church on Saturday 12th September, when Victor Hindle and friends are kindly sharing the proceeds between the NSPCC and Reverse Rett.
Granny Lis with Molly on the Prom.
The Men’s Team won the Division Two trophy last season. This season now sees them in the first division which is more challenging but we’re sure they rise to the challenge.
Special thanks go to Judith Shapland for suggesting this accessible swing, and to Cumbria CC and SLDC for funding it.
The Club recently held an American Tournament which was won by Jane Adams, Ann Morris, Martyn Willacy and Mike Wright.
Gary’s golfing career started at Grange Fell under the tutorship of resident professional at the time, Fred Robinson. He was a leading Amateur for many years before turning professional in 2010.
Jon Griffin, County Coach, is currently coaching juniors and adults - please contact the club for more details. èè To get more information contact: Club Secretary Kath Jordan tel: 015395 35590 or Membership Secretary Jonathan Rashleigh on 015395 68015. èè Full details of the club are also available on their website: www.nlltc.co.uk

A Day in the life of
Father Parker: catholic priest, rugby player, filmstar, brother, uncle and writer of the famous PS’s…is retiring, after 51 years as a parish priest. I had the pleasure of spending a lovely afternoon with him at Clare House, and hearing all about his eventful life, and some of it we can even publish!
Father Alf Parker
Growing up in Workington with his mother and two brothers, Kevin and Barry, Alf Parker had one love, one passion above all else - Rugby.
Alf’s father unfortunately died 4 months before he was born and the family moved to live with their grandfather. His mother never remarried. When he was 8 he met local priest, Father Cyprian Thompson, a Benedictine Monk, and Father Cyprian was to play a big part in young Alf’s life and was a father figure to him. When Alf was nearing the end of his grammar school education, Father Cyprian asked him if he had ever thought of becoming a priest, and Alf replied: “no, never”.
LEFT: Ordination Day 1964 ABOVE: Alf - centre with his Mother & Brothers RIGHT: Father Alf enjoying afternoon tea at Clare House
But this did indeed become the seed that would eventually lead him to his life’s work. In the meantime, on leaving school, he began working in an architect's office but soon became disillusioned and unhappy and the seed that Fr Cyprian had planted some years before had begun to grow. On 19th September 1958 Alf embarked on the 6 years of study at Ushaw College in County Durham to become a priest.
myself and my roommate (who was feeling the same) didn’t unpack for the entire term but my mother’s words had given me the freedom to make up my own mind without worrying about the effect my decision would have on others.”
Father Parker said: “after 3 years I decided I couldn’t do it, it wasn’t for me and I was very unhappy.” He went on: During the Christmas holidays I spent many hours with Fr Cyprian. He still felt I should be a priest and asked me to make a decision when I returned to the college. My mother’s advice was very specific, whilst it was seen as a privilege in those days for a catholic family to have a priest my mother was adamant that I must, under no circumstances, consider the feelings of the family.
Obviously, Fr P did eventually unpack and carried on with another 3 years of study before being ordained on 24 May 1964.
After becoming a priest, his first appointment was with the Portsmouth Diocese where he worked at the Cathedral Portsmouth, Crowthorne and Windsor. On returning to the diocese he took up a teaching position at the junior seminary at Kirkby Lonsdale. During the summer holidays Fr Alf would supply in America and parts of the British Isles.
It must be entirely my freedom to make up my own mind and not worry about the effect my decision would have on others. Fr Parker went on: “when I returned to my studies,
Family is very important to him and he has 1 nephew and 3 nieces. His nephew is the film director and producer, Kieran Parker, who

was behind the hit film, ‘Sunshine on Leith’, a film in which Fr Alf has a role. “I played the part of the priest!” Laughing, he continued, “Parker by name and nature - I couldn’t resist telling one of the crew that many things were out of place for a funeral” We come to present day and after countless hatches, matches and dispatches the time has come for Fr Alf to retire. He will be moving to Boarbank Hall in September. I asked him if it was difficult to devote your life to the Church and he said “I have absolutely no regrets about my life. I have loved every minute of it and I wouldn’t change a thing”. He continued: “Prayer and discipline were important and remain important to the life of a priest.”
I asked a few people close to Fr Parker for their thoughts. Friends, Eric and Angela Wright said: “It is wonderful to cook for a man who is so appreciative of food!” Angela
laughed and continued:”I must say though, after the first time my husband and I had him round to dinner we then joined Father Parker for a dinner and I felt a bit embarrassed as his cooking was exquisite. He is a lovely, lovely man” Marian Matthews, who has been the Parish Secretary for the past 3 years would like to tell Father P: “expect the unexpected”.
Len Gee said of Father Alf: “A rarity among clergymen in that he has a real understanding of the everyday life of ordinary people (“you are good people, good people”). A man who has the knack of being able to preach on the “thorny” issues of life. Whatever the occasion, he knows that an injection of humour goes a long way towards keeping the attention and appreciation of his listeners without being irreverent or minimising the gravity of the occasion.”
We all wish him a long and happy retirement.

Tim’s column
In fact one of the last things I did before taking a few days summer holiday with my family as to go out knocking on doors on a fairly wet evening in High Newton. I will even continue writing a monthly column for Grange Now to let you know what I have been up to over the past few weeks.
To be honest the election campaign did take me away from the constituency and my family more than I would have liked, 27 hustings all around the country does take quite a bit of time. But that is over, Parliament is in recess and my time is now more my own. Even with my new responsibility my plan is to continue to be home in Milnthorpe at least four nights a week, even during the times when Parliament is sitting. So Thursday nights can still be spent going out knocking on as many people’s doors as I can before people start feeling that it is getting too late to open the door to a strange rather damp man if the High Newton experience is anything to go by and I have a fair chance of being able to walk my youngest to primary school on at least one morning a week. I am also running my annual summer tour of the constituency and we will be travelling around the Cartmel Peninsula on the 1stof September so if you are reading this column soon after publication you still have time to get along to meet with us. Please do keep your eyes open for the notices saying exactly where and when we are stopping, we try to put up plenty of signs before we arrive, or you can find all the details on my website (www.timfarron.co.uk). I really look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during our stops. Even if you don’t feel you have any problems for me to help with I still enjoy having a chat with as many people as possible about issues like health care, education, employment, housing, in fact whatever it is that you think is important. As I keep saying it is only through these conversations that I can really understand what people want me to focus my efforts on in this area, this is what really allows me to be your voice in Westminster and avoid becoming Westminster’s voice up here. And if you cannot make it along to see me then you can always reach me by emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk or calling 01539 723403. Thanks so much for your support, Tim
Bruno Gouillon, Chairman Grange Allotments
What followed were sterling efforts, working together, and individually, and this is at the core of what we still strive to achieve today. We’re now in our sixth year. There are 30 plots that are mostly cultivated organically, and with varying approaches to both their design and inspiration. Some are predominantly vegetables, with a minimum area of paths, whilst others resemble more a “Chelsea Garden”. The sheds too, show similar diversity!

Some of you may have heard in the news that the devolution agenda is really starting to gather pace and a number of councils are now looking to put forward bids that would see them gain much more power and control at a local level, rather than these decisions all coming from Whitehall. Cornwall has been announced as the first rural area to be selected to benefit from a devolution deal and I really hope that here in Cumbria we
Grange Town Council meeting report During the ‘Have your say’ section, when residents have the opportunity to comment on agenda items, local resident, Mrs Parr spoke very highly of the Acting Clerk, Claire Benbow, and all the council staff, saying how well they had done during the previous 6 months. Later in the meeting the council staff were congratulated for a clear audit. It was a lengthy meeting during which many items were discussed including the possibility of a Saturday bus service. Councillors from the town council will meet with the parish councillors to discuss funding a bus service for all the outlying areas and Grange on a Saturday. During a recent meeting between GTC and SLDC, it was confirmed that SLDC will provide funding for Victoria Hall, at a fixed rate of £28,000 for the next 3 years. After that GTC will have to find the money themselves. SLDC have offered to fund a consultants report to find a way forward for the hall and to look at ways of making it self funding. However, £28,000 is a lot of money and residents now need to speak up about whether they want to keep the Hall and any ideas they may have for funding it. The lettering on the war memorial will be repainted as it has faded. The council are looking at ways of protecting it. The footpath down to the new medical centre is half owned by the developer and half by SLDC. The developer has done a good job of tarmacing their share of the pavement and it is hoped that SLDC will do their part to the same high standard. Clare House Lane bridge was discussed in detail. A number of residents have made complaints that the bridge
The Perfect Plot
I don’t think any of us were aware entirely, of what we were letting ourselves in for, way back on that cold January in 2010, when we began work on what was essentially a ploughed field surrounded by a rabbit and deer fence. Could these ever be allotments?
As some of you may be aware I have recently been elected leader of the Liberal Democrats but I want to make it very clear that I intend to ensure that this will not interfere with my work as MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, whether this involves working to address your problems or knocking on doors to find out what issues you have.
is unsafe and that a child could fall through the gap. Network Rail and the Health & Safety Executive have looked at the bridge and declared it to be a safe structure. If GTC do anything to the bridge, for example putting mesh around the gap, they then take on full responsibility for the bridge and the H&S Executive’s view will in effect become null and void. It was decided on this basis to take no further action at this stage. Many more items were discussed at the meeting and the full minutes are available to view online and members of the public are welcome at meetings. Next meeting: 12th October.

will not be far behind. It’s a real and genuine opportunity for us to benefit from a government decision and to be placed at the forefront of national change – change that will really benefit our county and of course the communities we serve.
Early discussions have already taken place between the County Council, District Councils, the Local Enterprise Partnership and our Health colleagues to put the deal together. We are in the early stages of developing a joint submission that will lay out a number of Cumbrian ‘Asks’
more communal work, then all to the good. Next year we intend to open the allotments again, as part of the National Gardens Scheme, this time to help raise funds for charity.
as well as showcasing what Cumbria has to offer in return. I sincerely hope that with all this discussion between District and County colleagues we now bite the bullet and sign up to full devolution. Forming one unitary Council (which is just what Cornwall has done) to run Cumbria would save 50 plus million pounds a year. It would form a more streamlined and efficient Authority able to argue our corner with Westminster to bring more power and funding to our area. Regards, Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

Open Gardens Day
well worth the wait!
Unfortunately, due to space constraints last month, we weren’t able to publish the photos we received from those who took part in the highly successful Open Gardens Day, but we do think they deserve a viewing - so here they are!
The 52nd show got off to a slightly drizzly start but thankfully not the complete washout that the forecasters had predicted. A long queue to get in showed a good turnout and there was plenty to do once inside. Parents queued up to have their offspring strapped into a contraction of torture that would whirl and twirl them all over the place but on further inspection the parents appeared to be paying, so it was perhaps something to be enjoyed after all. The dog agility competition was in full swing when we arrived, and the industries tent was packed with arts, crafts, sewing and knitting and boards full of drawings, handwriting and greetings cards sent in by local primary school children. Graham. Margaret, Katie and Rosie said ‘Jack the puppy' was enjoying his first show and all the attention he was getting.

Neighbourhood Plan
Are you Bungalow Bill or Kit House Kate? The Neighbourhood Plan needs to know whether you like slate roofs, or tiled ones, or even grassy ones? And how about – timber framed or metal? Square or round? We would like to hear your views about the types of dwellings you prefer and how they should be built. Look out for displays in the Library, Victoria Hall and other venues in September. You will have the opportunity to choose from lots of different styles of porches, windows, wall and roof materials and other features.
This doesn’t mean that all new houses in Grange will have these features but developers in the future will have to consult the Neighbourhood Plan to see

Featured Artist: Cartmel Art Society
This month we are featuring the whole society and celebrate their fantastic annual exhibition On 10th August, the village hall was full to capacity for the Exhibition Preview Evening. Guests were complimentary about the presentation of the event and during the week visitors from near and far commented on the welcoming atmosphere and high quality of work on display. The Society had a very successful week selling 80 pictures. They sent us this report: "On Preview Evening Ron Moore’s painting 'Looking North over Wastwater' raised nearly £200 in the Prize Draw for Cartmel Village Hall funds and Hilary Farnsworth was presented with the Constance Owen Memorial Trophy when her atmospheric painting 'Hebridean Haven' was voted the favourite picture of the evening. During the week 'The Nightwatchman' a beautiful pastel painting by Fiona Hancox, raised over £400 for Fiona’s chosen charity Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice and the raffle ticket winner was a lady from Leicestershire. Fiona was also the artist who won the most votes during the week in the Favourite Picture Competition for her 'Waves' painting with 'Wild Coast' by Margaret Auger
runner up. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all our friends and visitors who came to support us during the week. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2016 when we shall be celebrating our special 50th Exhibition." Next month: Fran Brown.

Share in the enjoyment of music making
One of the highlights of Westmorland Orchestra’s 2015/16 season will be a performance of Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’. To quote conductor Richard Howarth “This music is descriptive, emotive, utterly engaging and ultimately triumphant (loud)”. To get the season off to a flying start the Orchestra invites young people and adults to come along to their workshop and share in the enjoyment of music making. Open to any player (minimum grade 5 recommended) looking to experience both the unique pleasures of orchestral playing and share in the excitement of performing this amazing piece of music. The workshop will take place on Saturday 19th September at Kendal Parish Church Hall, Kirkland, Kendal, between 9.30am to 4.30pm. 18 and under - free, adults will be asked for a donation.
Visit the Orchestra’s website at www.westmorlandorchestra.org.uk for further information including an application form and schedule for the day or alternatively email westmorlandorchfixer@ gmail.com direct to book your place. Conductor: Richard Howarth. Leader: Pamela Redman

SCHOOL REPORTS
New name for Witherslack school
Allithwaite Nursery
A local independent, specialist school has made the decision to change its name to reflect the significant recent advancements that have taken place and the exciting future that is anticipated for both pupils and staff. The new academic year will see pupils welcomed to Oversands School, which was formerly known as Witherslack Hall School. The school, based in the historic country estate between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands, has undergone an extensive consultation process with both staff and pupils to develop the new name and school logo, which was officially launched on Monday August 10th. Jude Jones, Commercial Director for Witherslack Group, the Cumbrian based education provider who have owned the school since 1972, explained the decision to make the change: “As a service, Special Educational Needs has changed markedly over recent years. The perception that Special Educational Needs schools were for the ‘bad lads’ has long since gone, and there is now a far greater appreciation of the complex needs which affect the young people today.” She added: “We are delighted to be able to make this exciting announcement and be part
of continuing the significant development of the school and how it supports and enables young people to thrive and succeed.” Head Teacher, Robin Adams, echoed Mrs Jones in saying: “The future is very exciting for Oversands School. Our current projects include creating a Primary provision, a separate post-16 residential unit and a new Art & Design classroom, in addition to a new on-site therapy team and our increased ability to accommodate girls as well as boys. All this means that the school will be better equipped than ever to meet the needs of the increasing number of young people placed at the school.” The school, which was classed as Good by Ofsted in its latest inspection, reopens for the new academic term in early September and will welcome both returning and new pupils in their new look uniforms, ready for another successful year of academic development and personal success.
Lindale Pre-School
Lindale Pre-School Nursery is preparing for the new autumn term with more space to accommodate children who wish to join our happy and thriving setting. We have recently received a Creation of Places grant that will allow us to open up more space for four extra children each day—16 in total. Places are available for two year-olds in particular, and you are warmly invited to get in touch if you would like to discuss options for your young ones at the Nursery.
We are situated immediately next door to Lindale CE Primary School, so can offer wraparound care for older children and a seamless and happy transition to full-time school education. A new member of staff, Fliss Ward, joins Claire Dawson and Rachel

Simpson in September to help care for our extra children. Also new for the Nursery in September will be some fresh equipment including a ride-on tractor and chime bars, bought with the help of a Community Grant via Cumbria County Council. Our topic for the term is ‘All About Me’, with activities including a ‘Smile4Life’ programme to teach children about healthy teeth, eating and drinking.

Our purpose built Nursery is located in the grounds of Flookburgh C of E Primary School. It has an enclosed outdoor 'play area' overlooking the school playing fields.
Grange Nursery We currently have places available from September in our Nursery class where our caring, experienced staff provide a warm, welcoming and exciting learning environment for our youngest pupils.
We welcome children from three years of age, normally admitting them in the term after their 3rd birthday in September, January or after Easter. Funded sessions are offered five mornings per week, Monday to Friday from 8.55am – 11.55 am.

into our Reception class and our Nursery and Reception teachers work together with our headteacher to ensure our children are prepared and confident to continue their journey throughout school.
Our Nursery is well resourced and children learn through a mixture of play activities, both self – initiated and structured, circle and carpet times, social snack time as well as adult led and small group activities. In our Nursery, children experience a rich and stimulating curriculum, and most importantly develop the ability to work and play together with mutual respect and consideration. The development of imagination, curiosity through problem solving, physical skills and early numeracy and literacy skills all form part of each day for your child.

New Head at Cartmel Primary We are delighted to welcome our new Headteacher Mrs Rachel Battersby, who takes up her post on 1st September. Rachel lives in South Lakes with her husband, David, and is coming to us from Dean Gibson RC Primary School in Kendal where she has worked as Special Needs Co-ordinator and Assistant Head for a number of years. Rachel, a practising Christian, believes that developing life skills based on the core values of our faith is central to her work, and is looking forward to building on existing links with the beautiful Priory Church, the Priory School and other schools in the Cluster. Rachel has a background in the theatre,
and she hopes to bring creativity and innovation to the forefront of all areas of the curriculum at Cartmel Primary, seeking out the unique talents of each and every child, whilst providing opportunities for the children to grow and develop academically, vocationally, socially and spiritually. With enhanced playground facilities and a brand new classroom we look forward to exciting times ahead!
We are grateful to Mrs Jo Procter who, as Acting Head, led the school from November 2014 to the end of the academic year. We thank Jo for her work, wishing her well as she returns to her post as Deputy Headteacher at Croftlands Infants’ School.
The Nursery at Allithwaite opened in September 2014 and has one large classroom and two smaller ones where the Nursery and Reception children work together. At Allithwaite Nursery, both indoor and outdoor play is a key way in which children learn. Our play based approach enables children to explore, practise, co-operate, take risks, think creatively, communicate and express themselves. Most of all, the children have fun! We are fortunate to have a well resourced outdoor area which can be accessed in all weathers. This includes our new mud kitchen, a grassed area, a play house, a train
and a wooded area for exploring. We offer five morning sessions and three afternoon sessions on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, these can be covered by the free fifteen hours or can be paid sessions. Nursery children are welcome to stay for a school dinner or can bring a packed lunch. If the idea of den building, making mud pies, singing, dancing, building junk models and having fun with friends appeals to you, please get in touch and come and look round our Nursery. Allithwaite is an exceptional school and is at the heart of a caring community, but it is our children that make it special!

The forgotten fruit
he British Blackcurrant Foundation is championing the small, sharp-tasting berry as a forgotten fruit; apparently, the days when everyone had a blackcurrant bush in the garden are long behind us. They’re certainly not forgotten here at Low Sizergh Barn and we have been relishing the season, which started in early July. What’s more, these little beauties freeze so very well and can be retrieved from the frozen depths and used to deliver a blast of summer flavour even as we edge towards the autumn. This month’s recipe from the Low Sizergh kitchens pairs blackcurrants with Cartmel Valley Game’s smoked mackerel – super for a light lunch or quick supper.
Smoked Mackerel and Avocado Salad with Blackcurrant Dressing Serves 2-3
Ingredients 4 smoked mackerel fillets 6 vine cherry tomatoes For the dressing: A good handful of blackcurrants (crushed) ½ lemon (juiced) 3-4 glugs of olive oil Drizzle of honey Seasoning
celebrating local rural life
e are pretty good as a nation, at supporting and celebrating our countryside and its produce. Country Shows encapsulate the passion we have for this, and Cumbria hosts an outstanding selection of these shows throughout the summer months.
Local shows are an integral part of the farming community and the local economy, but they do need support in order to continue. As a local business, at Higginsons, we have always valued our involvement with local shows and enjoy how these unique events bring all aspects of rural life together: from the farmers, to the producers to the consumers, and of course, the livestock. Every year we take a stand at Cartmel Show, held each August just a couple of miles down the road from our shop. This year we had another highly successful day, selling out of Pies and Sausage! Even the weather was kind and the rain held off. This year we were a sponsor at Hawkshead Show, a lovely traditional country show with plenty of agricultural and

horticultural classes, trade stands and even hound trailing. The next big Country Show is of course the Westmorland County Show held on 10th September. It is one of the largest and oldest one-day shows in the country and boasts the largest ‘local products food hall’ in the country. The Food Hall is entirely supported by local producers promoting their products, and it offers a great shop window to ‘try, taste and buy’. We will be taking a great selection of our home-made pies, pick and mix packs of gourmet sausages and bacon, and a selection of fresh local meats including Salt Marsh Lamb. We hope that you will come and support us, and all the other dedicated local producers who help to put the South Lakes on the gastronomic map, and of course to enjoy a great day out!

CHURCH NEWS
Tottlebank Church
United Reformed Church
The year has definitely turned towards autumn, although the weather is warm as I prepare this. We now look forward to our Harvest Celebrations. This year we are going to continue our co-operation with our Methodist friends, and will hold a Harvest supper with them and then hold the Harvest Festival Service in the URC Church on Sunday, September 20th. Definitely something to look forward to.
Our monthly walks are continuing regularly with the last of them

Members of St Paul’s and the Fell Church who, for one reason or another, are unable to get to church, receive communion at home from members of our Pastoral group. Last month the Home Communicants gathered at the Fell Church to worship together, enjoy fellowship and an excellent afternoon tea and celebration of two birthdays. Many thanks are due to Mrs Joyce Leach for arranging these special occasions.

It came as quite shock to the congregation when, on July 12th our Vicar, Rob Jackson, announced that he would be leaving the Cartmel Peninsula Team ministry after 5 years to take up a new post as Rector in Whitehaven in early September. Refreshments will be provided and we would encourage people to come along and give their opinions on the changes proposed for the Parish Church.

Dear Editor,
Slimmer of the year My wife has come home today Wednesday 12th of August wearing 'The Woman of the Year' sash, silver pen and holder. Having been to Slimming World in Grange for the last 12 months and lost 4 stones 2.5lbs. Not bad for a pensioner. Well done Darling. I'm really proud of you.

Dear Editor, The Royal British Legion branch items that were in the club on Kents Bank Road, are now temporarily stored in the Victoria Hall until a permanent home can be found for them. Yours sincerely, Judith Parrington (Treasurer) Dear Editor, In response to a previous complaint in Grange Now. I would like to offer my congratulations to the committee and the team of volunteers who have made vast improvements to the recreation area on the promenade. Many families have enjoyed the facilities this season and find the changes extremely reasonable. Often families are charged extortionate rates for tourist attractions. It’s a pleasure to find a good ‘value for money activity’. I challenge anybody to compare prices for crazy golf/ putting/bowls/tennis in the area and find better value. Liz Benson, Allithwaite Dear Editor, The Committee of Lower Holker Village Hall, Cark-in-Cartmel, would like to express their thanks to the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust for a grant from them for £1000. This grant will go towards the cost of the work involved in updating the fire safety equipment in use at the Hall. This work had been identified in a recent Fire Risk Assessment Report. The Hall is a registered charity and has to raise funds itself for all of the work needed to be done at the Hall. Once again our grateful thanks go to the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust. Rhona Barton, Secretary, Lower Holker Village Hall Dear Editor, I recently held a Strawberry Tea to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care, the only UK wide specialist breast cancer support charity. Many local businesses in Ulverston and South Lakes gave, with staggering generosity, to provide the prizes for the raffle and a silent auction. Relatives, neighbours, friends and friends of friends arrived throughout the afternoon of the 31st July to enjoy a cuppa, a natter and over 7kg of donated strawberries served on cakes, shortbread, scones and fruit sticks which concealed another prize when selected. I would like to thank the bakers, the houseful of guests who attended and to the businesses listed below for their help to make the Strawberry Tea such a resounding success. Much appreciation also goes to St Paul’s Church in Grange who loaned the crockery, and also to Sonia, for providing emergency chairs for folk to enjoy the afternoon sunshine. The correct quiz entry winner is a Grange resident. After the Gift Aid was added, an overwhelming £788.30 was sent to Breast Cancer Care. Of course if there is anyone who still wishes to donate to this cause they can do so directly by visiting www.breastcancercare.org.uk and following the links. The Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank donated the quiz prize, a £30 voucher to spend there or at any of its sister inns. Vouchers from the Rose and Crown, The Mill, Poppies Café and Bistro, Mad Hatter’s Tea Rooms, The Hot Mango Cafe, An Indulgent Cream Tea for Two at the Netherwood Hotel, A Leisure Day Family Pass at the Grange Hotel, £23 worth of foods based on the strawberry theme from Gillam’s Tea Rooms, A bottle of wine from The Royal Oak, Lindale, An exclusive spa day for two at the Lakeside Hotel which is a priceless prize as this facility is only not normally offered to non residents, plus a mini manicure for two. And the strawberries were donated by Park House Farm PYO, who even picked them for us, the Co-Op and Booths who both also provided cream and cheese. Thomas Cook, Corrie and Co, Progression Solicitors and Ralph Spours for their help in printing the quizzes. St Paul’s Church, Grange over Sands, for the loan of enough crockery to feed and water a houseful of guests. Yours, Mrs. Pip Woon, Supply Teacher in Primary Schools throughout the South Lakes area.
Playing Robin Hood In the last Grange Now I was half way through my 4 part series on the new Care Act. But wait! Plus ca change….
The Department of Health has decided that it cannot go ahead with the changes to the financing of care, including the cap of £72,000 for what those in care will have to pay. Whilst the Government ‘remains firmly committed to implementing the cap to protect people from the risk of catastrophic costs’ it is not ‘proceeding to simply meet a deadline’ and also has ‘the hard task of balancing the books’ . Amazingly the secretary of state for Community and Social Care said ‘A time of consolidation is not the right moment to be implementing expensive new commitments such as this’ and so he has ‘taken the difficult decision’ to delay the introduction to the cap on care costs to April 2020. Remind me. When is the next election……?
But does it really make a difference to us? Not really. The cap was going to affect very few of my clients. It would be difficult to reach that £72,000 cap and that did not stop the ongoing contributions to daily living costs, of £12,000 per year, plus extra for toiletries, trips and treats.
I have only one client currently in a long stay in care that this would have helped. It is unlikely that he will live long enough to see this implemented and the past contributions he has made are not taken in to account under the new system anyway. He is now down to £35,000 of savings from his original £200,000 and we will soon be applying for pick up funding from the Local Authority. That is pretty catastrophic. If we do ever see this new cap become a reality it will need a great deal of thinking about and background infrastructure to support it. The idea of an ongoing care account for each person to monitor how much they have spent on their own care towards the cap is going to be fraught with difficulty and I imagine many Local Authorities will be very relieved that they have been given an extra 4 years’ breathing space.
So, it’s business as usual. You still need to plan for your own future to make sure you protect as much as you can for you and your family. We still see the cost of care as an imbalanced and unfair system which penalises those that have saved for their retirement and to leave something for their children, and which rewards those who have not been so frugal. I understand that we only have so much money in the system to pay for care and that it needs to be spent on those who need it. But we are here to look after you and yours.

Coffee Club In July, we welcomed Greg and Sue Walton who have recently moved to Grange after having ministered both in the UK and abroad. Greg looked at the future of the Christian church as ‘Mission or Monument’, while Sue illustrated with drama and song. Christ’s church has grown, like a mustard seed, to reach all over the world, but without growth it could become just a monument. Growth requires:
Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. Messengers: every Christian is a missionary; Mentoring: of others to continue sharing the good news; Motivation: The love of Christ is given to us by God; Method: shown through practical outreach to real needs; Moment: recognising God’s call individually Maintenance: Keeping going to keep going. This sharing of good news is through:
Our Words: sharing personal experiences; Our Work: putting belief in practical ways; Our Walk: showing by our consistent behaviour. Greg and Sue gave us much to consider and to apply personally. Our next meeting is on 15th September when Nigel Swinford, founder of the New English Orchestra, will share about ‘Music – Food of Love?’ anticipating the NEO visit for a concert at St Mary’s Allithwaite on October 17th. Meeting preceded by coffee at 10am. Everyone welcome.

Another highlight features Amanda Owen of ITV’s The Dales talking about her challenging life as a Yorkshire shepherdess. Further subjects to be covered in the rest of a varied and attractive programme include China, wildlife filming, mountaineering and adventure travel.

Grange Probus Club
Trefoil Guild
On 10th August, Tony Crowley gave an illustrated talk on the construction of the Heysham to M6 link road. He began by pointing out that the prospect of a new link to the M6 was already encouraging development on the White Lund commercial estate. He explained how the variation in terrain meant that large amounts of earth were excavated from East of the A6 and used to create an embankment to the West. He then described the construction of bridges over the A6, the River Lune, the Lancaster canal and the West Coast mainline railway. he described the many problems faced by the engineers including the creation of a nest by a pair of oystercatchers on a newly delivered heap of gravel, thus holding up its use until the chicks had matched and flown. Probus is for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members welcome. Chairman - Russell Bloxsom 34595, Secretary - Ewen Cameron 32319.
Grange Chess Club The new season starts mid September. Anyone interested contact Nick on Grange 32322
Newton & Field Broughton WI The new position for the Newton and Field Broughton WI stall at Cartmel Show on 5th August was beneficial as there was considerably more passing trade. It was well stocked with cakes, jams, chutneys, vegetables and lunch boxes and sales were brisk. This produced a healthy financial return for club funds. Thanks go to everyone who helped to make this such a success. The next meeting will be on September 9th when Marilyn Hale will be giving a hands on session on fused glass jewellery. It will be at Lindale Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.
Grange Lions All change at the top. Lion President Peter Clough handed over to incoming President David Stubbins at the end of June. It was a double celebration as the handover was also the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of long serving member Maurice Robinson and his wife Margaret. In his closing address Lion Peter thanked the members for their hard work and support in raising funds for lots of worthy causes. July’s social meeting started with a walk along Humphrey Head, followed by supper back at the President’s home. The weather was perfect with both members and guests able to sit out and enjoy some late seasonal sunshine. The sun was also in evidence for the Lions Charity Golf day at Grange Fell Golf Club. Arguably the best day of summer so far, with the course in excellent condition, some tremendous scores were recorded. The winning team, 3 Wise Men plus 1, was led by Kevin Pearson, with Fred Foster, Derek Airey, and Graeme Wilson collecting the trophy and prizes. Proceeds from the event will go to St Mary's Hospice.
Grange now | SEPTEMBER 2015 - Next deadline 18th September
Members met at Joy Tayler’s house. As Grange is hosting the annual carol service, members handcrafted cards for the invitations to the other guilds. The next meeting will be at Cartmel Village Hall on the 14th for a demonstration of Tai Chi. Details from Molly Inglis on 33141.
Grange & District Art Society The Society's Summer Exhibition was held at the Victoria hall Grange from 18 to 26 July. The Exhibition was opened by President Dr David Pearson and was graced by the Guest of Honour Mrs Mollie Points, our centenarian and former Chairman, and a leading member for many years. Susan Page's painting of Sharp Edge, Blencathra was voted the favourite painting in the show and is featured in the 2016 Calendar. This has just been published and many copies were sold at the Exhibition. Our Autumn programme of weekly meetings commences on 10 September at Allithwaite Community Centre with a display of paintings done by members during the summer. We hope that anyone interested will come and see what we do!'
Grange Rotary We have had two excellent talks this Rotary year. Tim Farron, Leader of the Liberal Democrats attended and gave us an insight into his new role and our second talk was from Justine McCory who is a Manager with the Alzheimers Society. She gave an informative talk on dementia and what help is available to people who have someone in the family who suffers from it. President Helen Frain-Kaye has asked that we support the charity in her year and the club is holding a collection for them on the 29th August. Watch out for our collectors on that day. There is a hope that a cafe could be formed for people suffering from dementia as well as those people caring for them. The club looks forward to a return match with the Lions Club on 24th September when a second quiz with supper will be held. And finally the club inducted a new member this Rotary Year and we were delighted to welcome Shirley Evans as a new Rotarian.

An overgrown and neglected area on the west side of the pond was selected for autumn and winter work starting in September with replanting in the Spring. The decision by the District Council to discontinue annual planting in the walls of the Ornamental Gardens was discussed and a promise was made to provide numbers and costs for the Group and Town Council to consider. Ron Shapland, Chairman.

CLASSIFIEDS
Adult Education It’s that time again as the summer we never really had fades and thoughts turn toward the autumn and what classes can we take to fill the darker nights, be that to learn a new hobby, get fit or take a course which might improve our job prospects.
We open our doors again 1st September and will be having an enrolment morning at Grange library on the 2nd from 9.30-12.00pm. The new brochure has received lots of positive comments as well as our revamped website, where we have tried to make it visually impactful and easy to use, so thank you for everyone who has taken the time to call us on that subject to give us your views. Classes will be starting from the week beginning 7th September so please be patient with us as the phone literally never stops ringing and we will be working longer hours than advertised to get through all your enrolments.
If you have difficulty getting us by phone, please email us on adulted@cartmelpriory.cumbria. sch.uk as we aim to answer them with 48 hours. To help us, please can you ensure that you complete all sections of the revised enrolment form as this is a condition of us receiving our subsidies and incomplete forms are returned to us. I am pleased to announce that we have found a GCSE tutor for English, Beatrice Pooley, so that will be going ahead in Ulverston, starting late September. This year we hope to use social media more extensively to communicate about up and coming courses, as well as advertise any courses which are additional to the brochure. If you use Facebook or twitter, please like us and link on Facebook: CartmelAdultEducation and Twitter @CartmelAdultEd.
We are using some new venues this time which include High Newton Village Hall to run a weekly sewing class, starting 17/09/15 as well as some Saturday workshops. We also have some courses which we have never hosted before, such as Adult Ballet lessons on Wednesday evenings and Thursday afternoon, Papier mache and decorative paper making techniques starting 14/09/15 at Cartmel village hall.
Other classes to look out for include:-
●●A great variety of language classes including Italian for beginners in Grange, Learn to speak Polish, ESOL, Greek, Spanish and Japanese at varying levels, French for beginners and German language and culture for beginners, as well as the old favourites of intermediate and advanced French. ●●Photography classes with award winning photographer Colin Reynolds, where he will teach you to use your digital camera more effectively on a Photographic Journey as well as running workshops of specific photographic topics. ●●A vast selection of arts and craft classes including art appreciation 16/09/15, felt painting 12/03/16, hand spinning using a drop spindle 10/10/15, getting started with hand embroidery 10/10/15, make a simple shift dress 19/09/15 and various painting workshops, such as watercolours, acrylics, mixed media and learn to draw and sketch.
●●Weekly and Saturday workshops on topics such as mindfulness, happiness and psychological well -being, keeping the older brain active, managing anxiety and from timid to tiger: parenting children with worries or anxieties.
●●Our normal selection of keep fit classes at varying times of the day, evening and at weekends including Pilates, exercise to music, Aqua, learn to run, yoga, healthy hearts, circuits etc. ●●Accredited courses including FREE GCSE Maths and English courses (exam fee payable), Level 2, 3 and 4 Counselling and Level 3 Award in Education and Training

As you can see, lots to choose from, with many still attracting a subsidy, so representing excellent value for money. We look forward to welcoming you to this centre as another academic year beckons and hope you will continue to support us as strongly and loyally as you have in the past. Singing for the Brain
SITUATIONS VACANT MORE ON PAGE 30
Singing for the Brain in Grange will soon be one year old! Originally set up last autumn as a ten week pilot project by local women’s group, Soroptimist International Grange-over-Sands, it quickly became a popular activity for people with dementia and their carers and was extended for two further blocks of ten sessions, finishing in July. Following research some years ago that showed how beneficial music, especially singing, can be for those coping with dementia, The Alzheimers Society began to set up Singing for the Brain groups across the country and it remains the most successful and well-attended of the various programmes they do. There are groups in Kendal and Barrow but S.I. Grange-over-Sands decided that there could also be a need for one in Grange and set about raising the funds in 2014 so that their members could have training from the Alzheimers Society to become volunteers or session leaders and set up a group here.
Taking place originally at Grange Methodist Church hall, the two-hour meetings were a mix of socializing and singing, plus activities to help language, co-ordination and spacial awareness. They were also great fun, not just for those with dementia but also their carers. Since January, the sessions have been at Allithwaite Community Centre, which has parking facilities and disabled access. After a successful year, the group has a regular core of participants who are keen for it to continue and so will resume at Allithwaite Community Centre onThursday, September 10th. If you or someone you know could benefit and would like more information, please ring Janice Carrick, 015395 58001.
