Development Brief for around 200 new homes on Kents Bank site South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) are preparing a Development Brief for 'Land South of Allithwaite Road, Kents Bank, Grange over Sands', as required by the Local Plan. The development, which is proposed for all the fields between Kirkhead Road, Allithwaite Road and Greaves Wood Road, will potentially comprise: approximately 202 dwellings and a small element of employment development. A spokesperson for SLDC told Grange Now: “Development Briefs provide site specific planning guidance on large, complex or sensitive allocated sites. They will be used as guidance for considering planning applications and will inform developers and other interested groups of the constraints and opportunities presented by a site and the type of development expected or encouraged on the site by the Local Planning Authority." SLDC are working closely with Grange Town Council and the Grange Neighbourhood Plan Group as part of these early stages of preparing the Brief. The spokesperson highlighted:
“It is important that people keep in mind that The figure of 202 dwellings is the theoretical capacity of the site and is based on estimated densities – the exact figure will depend very much on things like the size and type of properties, garden size and how much space is used for other things like open space, landscaping and footpaths. It is also important for people wanting
Proceeds of Fair to go towards Victoria Hall Councillor Tricia Thomas and Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines are holding a charity Christmas Fair in the Victoria Hall on Saturday November 28th between 10am and 2pm.
Councillor Thomas told Grange Now: “In my role as Mayor last year, I decided to hold a Christmas fair whereby charities could raise money for their respective causes and the proceeds from the tombola, raffle etc which we organised ourselves, would go to my chosen charities as Mayor.
These green fields in Kents Bank could soon be over 200 homes and light industrial units
to get involved to understand that the principle of development taking place on this site has already been set in the Council’s Local Plan – the Brief preparation process is not an opportunity to object to the development of the site, but rather it is a chance to shape the development of the site so that it delivers benefits for the wider community as well as the potential residents/businesses occupying the new homes/units”
The Council will be running a public consultation later in the autumn so that people can put forward comments and suggestions on the key issues, opportunities and constraints for each site. SLDC have said they will keep us informed as to developments progress and consultation dates. èè For more information, go to the Development Briefs page of the Council website.
It was such a success that Sally and I have decided to do it again, but this year the proceeds from the stalls we run will be going towards upgrading equipment for the Victoria Hall kitchen. We really hope the event will be a be an even bigger success than last year, allowing both local charities and the Victoria Hall to benefit” Tricia and Sally have contacted the charities who took part last year, but if you are a charity and would like a free table at the fair please contact Sally on 015395 32375 or email: victoriahallmanager@ grangeoversands.net as soon as possible as places are being rapidly taken up.

Join the Memory Walk
Paula Easterlow, urges residents of Allithwaite and surrounding areas to walk for a world without dementia. A Memory Walk to help people with dementia, and their carers, is being organised in Grange as part of Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. The event will take place on 10 October 2015 Grange over Sands on the promenade. Paula, of Allithwaite and Blue Street Arts were inspired to host the walk because the nearest walk was in Carlisle and I am a dementia friend. She told Grange Now: ”We need people to join us and together, arm in arm, step by step and pound by pound, we will walk for a world without dementia”. She continued: “I used to work in mental health and realise how important the research and support people living with dementia and their carers.” ‘Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society is a vital way of supporting people living with this condition, and I hope that
our contribution will help fund research into better treatments.I’m also a keen walker in whatever the weather, and would love to see us come together for a common cause. I would encourage you all to put a couple of hours’ time aside to join me for this lovely event – the more the merrier.’ èè Paula’s Memory Walk which takes place in Grange over Sands is starting at 10am. If you’d like to join Paula to fight dementia, you can contact her on 015395 34853 or 07870 867 510.

Further to the recent recruitment drive, Grange fire service are delighted to announce that they have had two new recruits join them.

Asking them why they had decided to join up, Hal said: “I want to give something back to the community” and Tim said: “it seemed like an opportunity rather than a job”. With all the recent changes in the financial world including pension’s legislation, income tax, corporation tax and inheritance tax allowances, it has been easy to miss other changes being made. Many people are unaware that investor protection limits are due to change. This includes the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) decision to cut the deposit compensation limit for savers from £85,000 to £75,000 per individual from 1 January 2016. This is part of a recalibration of the threshold following falls in the euro against the pound. Currently, anyone who has up to £85,000 (or up to £170,000 for joint accounts) in a bank or building society would be covered if the institution goes bust.
The FSCS today also announced that bank customers who have large sums in their account as a result of selling a home or preparing to buy one will have up to £1m protected, for up to six months. The £1m cap will be in addition to the usual protection limit and deposits that qualify as temporary high balances include funds ready for buying residential property, or proceeds from a sale or equity release. Temporarily high balances that occur for other reasons, such as a divorce settlement or redundancy package, will also be protected under the plan.
Alongside the changes to the deposit compensation limit, the insurance compensation limit (including pensions, life assurance investment bonds and life assurance) will be increased to 100% (currently 90%) with no upper limit. The investment compensation limit wil remain unchanged at £50,000 per person, per firm.
It also seems timely to comment on the recent stock market volatility, which has arisen due to concerns over a slowdown in the economic growth of China. At these times it is important to remember that two fundamental aspects of financial planning are diversification and time horizons and we would encourage investors to think about these two factors when considering any changes to their investment portfolio. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Arnside to Grange Cycle & Footpath UPDATE FROM ATOG - ATOG is dedicated to the establishment of a cycleway and footpath on the side of the railway viaduct across the Kent estuary between Arnside and Grange, on the north shore of Morecambe Bay. A foot crossing over the Kent has been suggested since the viaduct was first built. Councillor Ian Stewart has been pushing this since 2001. A survey of households, in Arnside in 2011, showed significant support for a pedestrian/cycle path on the Arnside railway viaduct. In 2012, ATOG, persuaded cycling charity Sustrans to write a report on the feasible routes between Arnside and Grange. There were seven possibilities and each had advantages and disadvantages. (Report available on the ATOG Facebook page). The consensus seems to be that the new path should be hung on the Milnthorpe side of the bridge, but this is far from decided. There is a problem finding a route alongside the west side of the railway around Meathop Fell, but a slightly longer route around through Meathop would be an acceptable alternative. There are some issues on access from Arnside – the best option would seem to be from the car park at Arnside and through the first arch on the Arnside side. There would be an
issue with very high tides but we think there is no reason why the new path should not be closed whenever the water-tight gates to the car park are closed. Natural England who are developing the new England Coastal Path, have been generally supportive, and they are well on the way to reaching Walney Island from Gretna. Over the next year or two they will be turning their attention to Walney to Arnside section of the England Coastal path. The Arnside Viaduct could be an important part of that and they might be able to help with funding.
The next step will be for the various interested bodies to come together to raise perhaps £40,000 to £60,000 to pay for a detailed report on engineering options and benefits for the local communities. We hope that at least 60% of this sum can be found from non-public bodies. Morecambe Bay Partnership and Local Councils plan to carry out further work. èè If you have any questions or suggestions please contact Stuart on ATOG2011@talktalk.net

Allithwaite School donating to foodbank.
During the last collection for foodbank in July, Grange residents gave 157.3 kg of food, (equivalent to 375 meals).
More and more people are dependent on the provisions they receive to help feed themselves or their families. It appears to be a problem which is on the increase and it is because of this that Allithwaite Primary School have made the decision to give the produce from their Harvest Festival this year, to the appeal. A volunteer for foodbank told Grange Now: “We are absolutely delighted that Allithwaite Primary are going to help us in this way. It’s great news”. Joint Acting Head, Gillian Elliott said: “Harvest is a time for thinking about sharing. By donating to a local food bank we are encouraging our children to support their community whilst creating an awareness of the needs on our doorstep. We are lucky to have extremely generous and supportive parents who will no doubt make this a success.” The next collection in Grange will take place on Sunday 25th October 1-3 p.m. meeting room, St. Paul's Church, Grange.
Haverthwaite residents turn out in force Representatives from Highways England along with Councillors from the County, District and the Parish Councils, held a drop in centre on Tuesday 15th September to discuss suggested safety improvements to the A590 at Haverthwaite. Among the things being discussed were two options to introduce improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as local drivers, for the section between Haverthwaite railway station and Lane Ends junction. Connecting the two communities either side of the A590 was also a key objective. Proposed new road layouts and a bridge over the carriageway were some of the options discussed. District and County Councillor, Sue Sanderson told Grange Now: "I was very pleased to see so many residents attending the event and spending time asking questions and sharing their thoughts. All views will be taken into consideration and it was very important to hear a range of opinion before any decisions are made". Jonathan Reade of Highways England told Grange Now: "We were really pleased with the turnout, 87 people attended, and the opportunity
One door closes, another opens. There’s still a local garage offering the service you need.
Haverthwaite residents: Sharing their views
the event gave us to talk directly with local people about their concerns as well as their thoughts about the options presented. A wide range of views were expressed. Many people said they had real worries crossing the road outside the Haverthwaite Railway Station, as well turning onto or off the A590 at the Levis Garth junction and Stonecroft junction. Other people said they did not face any difficulties. From the feedback we received on the day, there was a great deal of support for proposals to change the road layout so that there is a single lane in each
direction on the A590 at the Railway Station.
We also asked people for their thoughts on the idea of providing a bridge for use by pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders over the A590 at Lanes End. This would further improve facilities in the area and also open up access to other cycle networks and footpaths as well as support tourism. Again many people thought it a good idea, but others thought it was not needed." We look forward to hearing the final outcome. Watch this space.

Make a child smile - fill a shoebox Yes, it’s that time of year already, when people throughout Cumbria are filling shoeboxes for Boxes of Hope, Cumbria, in order to provide a bit of happiness for children in Romania, who would otherwise have nothing or very little at Christmas.
HOLKER HALLOWEEN FUN Wed 28th to Sat 31st October 2015 Wicked Walks in the Holker Garden (30th & 31st) at 2pm. £3.50 per person. Limited places. Pre-booking advised.
Making a difference to Children in Romania
Bring your own Loathsome Lantern. Competition judged daily 12.15pm & 3.15pm.
Creepy Crafts daily 10.30am - 12.30pm & 1pm - 3pm. Just turn up £4 per child.
Children and adults alike love to fill a shoebox – it is a simple and fun thing to do, doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and it really does make a difference to a child who has none of the basics we take for granted. Many of them have never in their lives had a gift. Many have never had a toy. A team from Cumbria take the shoeboxes and personally give them to the children. They are then able to report back and send pictures of the children who receive them. Everyone works on a voluntary basis so any surplus funding goes towards longer term educational support for these children. So, you can pick up a leaflet from Grange Now, and this will give you further information about the children we help and, more importantly, how to go about filling a shoebox. It includes a boy/girl label for you to stick on your
box. All the information is also on our website: boxesofhopecumbria.co.uk. If you haven’t done it before, you obtain a medium sized shoebox (NOT a boot box) and cover it with bright wrapping paper. Decide whether your box is for a boy or a girl, then fill your box with basic hygiene and stationery items, warm hat/scarf/gloves/socks, a few toys or games, sweets and a £2 donation which goes towards the essential costs of getting the shoeboxes from Cumbria to Romania. Secured by an elastic band, take your box, in November, to Grange Now, Grange TIC or the Bay Search and Rescue shop in Kents Bank Rd. The campaign runs until Nov 12th, and the boxes leave the UK soon after that, in time for our team going out in early December to give them out. Bring a bit of magic to a child in Romania this Christmas.

Following the amazing success of their last ladies fashion show and pop up shop, Cartmel and District Flower Club have decided to organise another one, to raise funds for The Rainbow Trust Children's Charity
The fashion show starts at 7.30pm but doors open at 7pm, which is when you can get your charity raffle tickets: one of the prizes is a £50 voucher to spend on the night. With brands including M&S, Wallis, New Look, Oasis, Topshop and
Next available at at least 50% off, it’s certainly worth going. The event will take place on Wednesday 4th November at Cartmel Village Hall (doors open 7pm) and tickets, priced £6 including refreshments, are available from Margaret Turner 015395 38946 or Angela Proctor on 015395 59145.
Coffee, cake and conkers Grange’s Conker Championship is coming soon! As last year’s competition was so successful, as were the cakes and coffee, the organisers are repeating the event at the Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 10th October at 10:00 am until 12 noon. Delicious homemade cakes, coffee, and fantastic entertainment
by Grange Youth Theatre, will accompany the competition for under 10’s, over 10’s and of course for adults! You don’t even need to bring your own conker
(although they would encourage you to do so – but Mrs. Malkin will be checking for any baked, soaked or otherwise ‘fiddled’ with conkers!), or you can give a donation and get one ready strung at the event. All proceeds to “Compassion” child sponsorship in a Third World country. Why not go along and join in some good old fashioned fun.
LADIES WE WANT YOUR BRAS. The Big Pink are collecting bras, and they will be sending them to ‘Against Breast Cancer’ in November. Grange Now have agreed to be a drop off point, so get looking in your drawers and find us an old bra. Once you have chosen the bra you wish to donate, please attach your name and contact number to it, as a few bras will be selected to win prizes. Donations to be in by October 6th please Your ill-fitting or unwanted bras will be whisked away to start a new life on the other side of the world, where traders support their families by selling textiles locally. Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty whilst providing employment for people at home in the UK. Money raised for sending the bras away goes back into the fight against Cancer. We will be using your bras in some form of decoration at the ‘Big Pink Ball’ before they are sent away.

There will be a new person appointed to fulfil this role and l am sure that you will give them the amazing support you have kindly shown me over the last 12 years. Jude, Carolyn and Debbie

Waiting for the England call up
Cartmel Priory Year 11 pupil, Kelsey Pearson, is waiting to see if she is called up by the England under 21 squad. She told Grange Now: “I’m on standby so if I get the call up I will be going to join the team in Estonia.” The niece of Barrow player, Jason Walker, has been playing football since she was 9. She played locally in Milnthorpe before joining Cumbria Girl’s Centre for Excellence. This led to securing a place at Blackpool FC at the age of 14, before joining her current club, Blackburn Rovers. Kelsey said: “I love playing football and school have been really supportive. If I get the England call up, there is an Education Officer who makes sure I keep up with my schoolwork”. Kelsey’s mum, Stacey, told us: “I am immensely proud of Stacey, and of what she’s achieved. She’s not just a good football player though, she’s a real gem.” Stacey continued: “Kelsey travels to Dallas next Easter, with her Blackburn Rovers team mates on a tour of America.” Something Kelsey hadn’t mentioned during our interview and Stacey laughed: “no, she wouldn’t. She hasn’t told anyone.” I’m sure Kelsey Pearson is a name we will hear a lot of in the future and we wish her well in her football career.

On a windy, very rainy Saturday morning (13 September); three swimmers, two canoeists and a safety boat started the 11 mile challenge of Windermere from Fellfoot (Newby Bridge) to Waterhead (Ambleside). The swimmers: Simon Thompson, John Stephenson and Simon McCleery, supported by John Douglas and Colin Fisher in canoes and Neil Brooksbank in the safety Boat. Amanda McCleery offered vehicular support; and, most importantly, Douglas and Becky McCleery, were the cheerleaders! A speedy six hours and twentyseven minutes later, Simon Thompson finished. Simon McCleery followed in with a more modest seven hours and forty-five minutes. For John Stephenson, this was his first lake swim and he set off with the intention of getting as far as he could, a very creditable eight miles later, saw him getting out at Red Nab. The challenge started off as Simon McCleery wanted to swim all of the major bodies of water in the Lake District and John Douglas wanting to run, bike and canoe the lakes.

All good ideas are born, when adequately lubricated in one’s local! In this case it all started in 2013 in the Pheasant Inn in Allithwaite. As time has gone on, more people have joined in. “We have been fundraising for a number of charities”, says Simon McCleery, “this year I’ve been raising money for Blackwell Sailing, a volunteer-run organisation based in Windermere that provides sailing opportunities for people with disabilities, young and old”.
Golfers raise nearly £2000 for MacMillan A huge thank you to everyone who sponsored us on our 72 hole golf challenge which we completed on 21st June 2015, taking us 14 1/2 hours around Grange Fell golf course. Our efforts and your help has raised £1844 for Macmillan Cancer Support. So thank you from Gary Johnston, Mark Johnston, Will Macdonald and Liam Chalmers.
Similarly, John Douglas is fundraising for three charities: John Muir Trust – the wild land conservation organisation which owns Ben Nevis and other wild places in Britain; SANDS – The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity and Cancer Research UK. In the last year, he has run around 5 lakes (including a marathon around Coniston Water), biked around 2 and canoed 2 of 17 lakes in the Lake District.

FATHER AND DAUGHTER WIN FIRST COMP
Grange Fell Golf Club Professional, Ernie Foster, has ended the summer junior coaching with a Ryder Cup style competition for the youngsters. Former Captain, Graham Shepherd partnered his daughter Katie for the event, and they were delighted to be announced as the winners. Graham said: “It’s really nice that I’ve got a hobby to share with Katie, and her face when she won was wonderful - she couldn’t believe it. Hopefully it’s her first win of many!”
Katie Dand and her uncle, Mike Garnett, came second and father and son team, Craig and Kyle Davidson came third. Ernie told Grange Now: “It was a similar format to the opening foursomes of the Ryder Cup, and I think they were just as competitive!! He continued: “This has been the first competition following the conclusion of the summer golf coaching, and it has been a real success. We are now are planning to hold more of these events in the future. Watch this space!"
Netting a place for the County Another Cartmel Priory pupil, Isabel, has managed to secure a place in the ‘pod’ for Cumbria County netball. Isabel started playing netball when she was in Year 6 at Allithwaite Primary School, and when she started secondary school she immediately joined the after school netball club. Just before the school summer holiday, and despite only playing for 2 years, Isabel was invited to attend County trials in Carlisle. Isabel and dad, David, joined around 70 other youngsters who were then split into 8 teams, each of
which played a 15 minutes session, before rotating. Isabel said:”I was absolutely shattered at the end of the session but I really enjoyed it. I’ve already made some great friends”. David continued: “Despite not knowing a single
person, it was great to see she had the confidence to play really well in the trials, and she even scored in the first minute of the first game which really helped to relax her.” At the end of the trials 13 girls were chosen to play for the County under 14’s team and 4, including Isabel, were chosen for the ‘pod’. The ‘pod’ is made up of under 13’s who train at a higher level in preparation for making the team the following year. They also provide backup and may be picked for the first team, if they excel or as cover for an injured player. Training takes place once a month, on a Sunday, in Appleby.

Alison Joins Barking Mad as new franchisee Alison has always been passionate about animals; she grew up with up predominantly rescue dogs and cats in the family home and still has a menagerie of animals at home. She lives with her husband, two teenage children, her gorgeous Bearded Collie – Yeshe, two loveable cats – Tonks and Remus and a plethora of chickens.
Their pets are treated as part of the family, so they fully understand how it feels to leave them behind even for a short time. “We struggled with the idea of leaving Yeshe and going on holiday without her. We searched for some time to find an alternative to kennels and discovered Barking Mad, a home from home dog boarding service. I loved the sound of the service so much that I became a host family and looked after dogs whilst their owners were on holiday.
When I began to look at the business in more detail and realised that the area immediately next to me was available to purchase I jumped at the chance” says Alison.
Barking Mad arranges accommodation for dogs in a genuinely caring environment with select host families, where their existing feeding and exercise routines are maintained. If you would like to enquire about using the Barking Mad service for your pet, or if you’re interested in becoming a host, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Victoria Hall open day On Saturday 7th November, Victoria Hall is open to the public for a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the hall including the backstage area and the council chamber.
Victoria Hall manager, Sally Haines and Councillor Tricia Thomas will be on hand to give tours of the building, and there will be different table arrangements set up for anyone who wants to hire the hall for a function or a wedding/anniversary. Refreshments will be available throughout the day and the hall will be open between 10am and 4pm. The aim behind the open day is to generate more interest in the hall and to encourage people to book their function there as the hall will have to become self-funding once the SLDC grant stops.

and travelled from Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank.
Wednesday 9th September was a memorable day in our history, as this was the day that Queen Elizabeth ll became the longest reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth has now exceeded her great-great grandmother’s reign of 63 years, seven months and two days. I have just recently presented a report to the County Council cabinet on Digital innovation from the Scrutiny Task Group. The group identified a need to review the systems the council already has in place with a view to reducing the number and making them more customer friendly.
To deliver effective customer-focused digital services, the organisation needs to consider the skills and capacity required to deliver the change, and to manage and maintain it in the long-term. Some of the council’s Members obtained evidence from five other Authorities which emphasised the importance of programme and project management and technical digital skills. It is also highlighted the need to prepare staff for changing roles, and potential reduction of staff resources as business processes are re-designed and digitised. It is important to review the existing systems in place, with a view to rationalisation, and to ensure systems across the organisation are designed to ‘talk to each other’. Regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

Making a will won’t kill you. There are a number of important legal formalities that must be observed when making a will if it is to be valid and actually achieve what is wanted without any unforeseen consequences which could be very costly. Ambiguities in wills can and often do result in disputes between members of the family and unfortunately, many of these eventually end up being resolved by a court at considerable expense for all those involved. We are one of the fastest growing legal practices in the region offering specialist expertise on wills, trusts, inheritance tax, powers of attorney and probate. The private client team is lead by Pamela Horobin who is now available for appointments in our new Grange office at Kents Bank Road.
Don't put it off. Progression Solicitors uses its extensive expertise to guide clients through the process of drawing up a will in an efficient and uncomplicated manner. Home appointments can be made for clients who are housebound or elderly and Progression will always tell you how much it will cost before starting. We are always happy to look at an existing will at no charge to let you know if there is anything that you should consider updating or amending.
Call Progression Solicitors now to arrange an appointment in our new Grange office and to receive our exclusive 20% off wills offer. 015395 76123 (Offer valid for appointments made before 15 November 2015)

Tim’s column
It has been a busy few weeks! Thanks everyone who came along to say “hello” when my Summer Tour rolled through the Cartmel Peninsula.
I don’t know whether it was down to the weather or the current political climate but we seemed to have more people popping along for a chat than we have had in previous years. We finished the tour with a good pile of issues to look into for people and it was really useful to hear views on everything from the price of milk to the price of housing to the state of the Westmorland General Hospital along with any number of other issues. Off the top of my head some of the other things that came up around Grange and Cartmel were the state of the A591 and other roads around here, public transport and the numbers of children going to the local schools. I will look into all of them and report back. On the issue of milk pricing I am running a petition calling on the Government to ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their milk. There are any number of things they could do, key of which for me, is protecting them from the bullying behaviour of the big supermarkets by including them within the remit of the Supermarket Ombudsman. I was very happy when this position was introduced, in fact I worked quite hard to ensure that it was part of the Coalition Agreement in the
last Government, so it was very disappointing when I learned that although the position was being introduced it would not cover farmers, the group I was most interested in being protected in the first place. We are, however, lucky around here as many of our supermarkets do pay farmers a reasonable amount. Most notably Booths who have undertaken to always pay the highest rate for milk but we need the rest to follow their lead.
Those of you who came along to the Westmorland County Show may well have signed the Petition (over a thousand took time out of admiring the cattle and sheep to do this) but if you didn’t and you want to support the campaign just email me with your name and address and we will add you to the list.
The day after the Show we had the Torchlight Procession in Kendal and I was really proud, along with my children, to walk around Kendal as part of the Organ Donor float. There is a campaign to make Kendal the first organ donor town in the country with over 1000 signed up donors by May next year. I don’t know if people from Grange signing up counts towards the total but if you would like to become a donor don’t let the fact that you don’t live in Kendal stand in your way. You can find out more by Googling “Kendal Organ Donor Town”.
As ever if I can help you with any issues please email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call on 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim
Neighbourhood Plan
Well under way!
WHAT’S OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN ABOUT? It’s a set of legal requirements for new buildings in Grange and Kents Bank. It’s to protect the things we value about the area and provide a good life here for future generations. It brings in extra funding for local priorities. It can’t stop land being built on if it’s in the SLDC Local Plan, but it can help us get something to suit our needs and keep the character of the area special for residents and visitors.
Who’s doing it and why?
What has been done so far?
We are – it’s a community effort. Residents and councillors formed a Steering Group when you gave us the go-ahead in February. We research what residents want and write it up to go into the official document. We got a government grant to fund us and hired a consultant to help with the legal aspects. We’re doing surveys, asking for local opinions, finding statistics to support our case, and talking to local residents in Grange and Kents Bank. We meet every fortnight to keep us on track.
We’ve done lots - too much to list. For example …….. • Marked out the open green spaces to be kept free of building • Listed the views, landmarks and buildings to be kept for residents and tourists to enjoy • Produced our requirements to prevent flooding on and around new building sites • Assessed where extra paths and cycleways could be provided for safer walking to school • Identified important wildlife sites to protect and improve
What next? How can I have a say? Come to our big exhibition in December Full details and invitations in next month’s Grange Now. There will be Steering Group people to talk to, all our work to ask questions about, plenty of time to tell us what you think and whether we’ve got it right so far. Everyone is welcome.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Britain’s garden wildlife needs our help
In our small terrace in Grange, my husband and I have spent the last 12 years trying to encourage wildlife into our little ‘courtyard style’ garden. Slowly, but surely, the birds came and we now enjoy sharing it with a host of tits, dunnocks and gold finches. This year, we have been greatly amused by the multiple broods of sparrows surrounding us with their continual chatter and fast brrrr of wings as they squabble for the choicest morsels of food. So, you can imagine how chuffed we were when we discovered that we were being visited by one of our most iconic native animals – a hedgehog!
However, despite wildlife gardeners’ best efforts Britain has seen a decline of its plant and animal species in the last 50 years.
Two years ago, research compiled by 25 wildlife organisations found many of our common garden species – house sparrows, starlings, and common frogs, for example – are becoming much rarer. In the case of hedgehogs, numbers have fallen by over 30% in just over 10 years. Faster than tigers are disappearing from the world!
To encourage people to support local wildlife in their gardens the RHS and Wildlife Trusts have joined forces to run Wild About Gardens Week from 26th October to 1st November. They believe that together, we can halt the decline of many of the beautiful creatures that we share our gardens with.
To help explore this question, come to Grange Library from 26th to 31st October, where there will be a display all about Wild About Gardens Week. There you will find out what you can do in your own garden this autumn, especially for hedgehogs. You will also be able to mark on a large map, where you have seen hedgehogs in and around Grange. So come and share your thoughts and let’s support wildlife in Grange.
Grange is blessed with many ‘green fingered’ gardeners and keen naturalists; all of whom are doing their bit. But can we do a bit more to help our native species by making our own gardens and parks more wildlife friendly?
Thanks to Grange residents, Izzy and Nick Thorne, for sending in this article.
Learn more by going to www.wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk and www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk We recommend checking that the library is open before setting off: 32749.

Grange landscape gardener makes top 5
A winning design by Howard Haines
Howard Haines was one of 5 finalists in the North west in a recent landscape gardening competition run by Travis Perkins. Howard transformed the garden of a property at Cartmel Fell. He told Grange Now: “It’s a terrific honour to be shortlisted as one of the top 5 jobs in the region. Jobs like these are a real labour of love and it’s a great feeling when you know you’re making a difference for the customer.” Proud wife, Sally, told Grange Now: “Howard has done all the hard landscaping, including the driveway, and designed and constructed the pergola. He was delighted to have been nominated for the award, but disappointed he didn’t win. He got through to the last 5 in the North West region which is a fantastic achievement.”

Separating the Salt from the Sand event
The Perfect Plot
October, the tenth month that sounds like the eighth, the summer is definitely over, if we're lucky there will be a few warm and sunny days to help with the final ripening of squashes and the later season apples. I try and turn squashes on these days to try and get the skin a more consistent colour even putting a little bit of straw underneath to try and prevent the rot getting in. It's worth keep an eye on the weather forecast for those first frosty nights which often follow the clear sunny days that can put you off your guard. You'll also see the last few raspberries this month, I prefer the late season varieties - to me they are more perfect in appearance and sweeter as if they've the whole of the summer’s sun in them. They are also much less prone to damage from raspberry beetles and their larvae whose lifecycle is in sync with the summer crop. Other pests can become a problem at this time of year but the battle against birds and rodents feels more honest than laying pheromone traps. Essentially I'd rather duke it out toe-to-toe with a crow or squirrel than be gazumped by a leering bondvillain-like wriggly grub when I'm about to pop a cheeky raspberry in my mouth. It's time as well to remove climbing beans and whatever
structures they've been occupying, I usually cut the stalks at ground level in the hope that the nitrogen fixing bacteria the root nodules harbour will remain in the ground. As areas become vacant it's also worth thinking about mulching any vacant areas in readiness for next year as it gives a chance for the worms and other beasties to begin to break it down and release goodness into the soil and hopefully reduce the amount of digging you have to do, if you leave it till after the frosts come it can almost insulate the cold into the ground and remain largely intact into the spring. If you are lucky enough to have access to a greenhouse or cold frame it's worth transferring herbs into pots to try and keep them going through the winter and if it's mild enough a late sowing of cut and come salads such as spinach and rocket will keep going for the whole of the winter. by John Randome Love
Morecambe Bay Partnership is running a special public talk exploring and rediscovering Morecambe Bay’s forgotten salt industry in October. Andrew Fielding, an expert in salt-making, will be exploring the tradition and forgotten industry of salt production. In prehistoric and historic times salt was won from the sea all around the North West coast and is an important part of Morecambe Bay’s heritage. Participants will discover more about the techniques used in the salt-making process and how the industry developed and disappeared over time in Morecambe Bay. Susannah Bleakley,
The event takes place from 2pm on Saturday 3 October at Gaskell Village Hall in Silverdale.Tickets are £2. To book online (using Eventbrite) and for more information follow the link at www.morecambebay.org.uk
Director of Morecambe Bay Partnership said: “Morecambe Bay has a long history of salt-making which forms part of its industrial heritage. This
is a rare opportunity to discover much more about this unique and fascinating process from one of the UK’s leading experts in the field.”
Circle of Life
Grange resident, Marie Hicks, sent these amazing picture of a Sparrowhawk which landed in her garden at around 5pm in the afternoon. Mrs Hicks told Grange Now: “I saw the bird quite by chance. It stayed in the garden for about 15-20 minutes and flew off once it had finished what it wanted to eat.”

Colours, light, textures and the beautiful Morecambe Bay landscape are just some of the things which inspire talented fused glass artist, Fran Brown. Fran moved up from Brighton in December 1998 and started a stained glass course, run by Sarah Walkley, through Cartmel Adult Education. It was on this course that she learnt the art of fused glass and became inspired to set up her own glass fusing business. Fran set up her small business with the support of The Rural Women's Network in October 2005. At that time the Network organised Business Start Up Programmes and gave out small start up grants, both of which were invaluable at the time, enabling her to get her first kiln. Once she developed a small range of designs, she gathered a few together and set off to find an outlet to sell them for her. Fran laughed: “I had glass hangings literally hung over the handles of the buggy and off I went. I walked into Tinners Rabbit in Ulverston and saw Chris Benfield. I asked him if he would consider selling my work and he said yes. I was delighted. I was really grateful to Chris (who sadly passed away recently) as he gave me the confidence to carry on and find more ways of selling my work. Finding support in the early days was crucial to enabling me to keep going, and I have many local people to thank for encouraging me and supporting my business, many of whom continue to support me today. Thank you.” Asking how she comes up with all the ideas for her work she told me:

“I’m inspired by so many things: light, reflections, nature, ceramics and also by the books I’ve read. When the boys were young I loved reading them stories by the author and illustrator, Quentin Blake. I love his style of work and found his quirky illustrations very inspiring”. Ten years on,Fran continues to work from home and is now part of The Beach Hut Gallery Artists Cooperative based at Kents Bank Station in Grange Over Sands which is both supportive and creatively inspiring. Fran now has a range of outlets for her glass including Brantwood and Tinners Rabbit Framers in Ulverston and of course the wonderful Beach

Cartmel Racecourse, the perfect launch pad Felix Francis, son of bestselling author and legendary jockey, Dick Francis, has chosen Cartmel Racecourse to launch his latest book. Front Runner, brought out under the ‘Dick Francis novel’ stable. For the over forty years Felix assisted his father with writing and researching his novels but in 2007, ‘Dead Heat’ became the first father and son collaboration when Felix took on a more
significant role. ‘Silks’ and ‘Even Money’ followed and the pair were working on ‘Crossfire’ when Dick sadly passed away in February 2010. Felix told Grange Now: "I have been greatly looking forward to coming to Cartmel Racecourse to speak about my father and how I took over the writing of the Francis books. Cartmel was always one of my father's favourite racecourses and he rode many winners there. It was a poignant return for me."

SCHOOL REPORTS
Cartmel CE Primary School
Students Celebrate GCSE Success
It has been an exciting start to the new term at Cartmel. We have a new Headteacher in post, Mrs Rachel Battersby and also welcomed Mrs Claire Unsworth to the teaching team. The children have settled well into their classes and Year 6 are particularly enjoying the whole class flute lessons in their brand new classroom. Children, staff and visitors made the most of the sunny weather on the 10th September by holding a celebratory Westmorland County Show Day at school. In house teams, the children participated in gardening activities, taking care of the allotment within the school grounds. They also decorated biscuits, made a multitude of farm
Celebrating at the Annual Graduation Ball at the Netherwood Hotel.
Cartmel Priory CE School students were celebrating GCSE success once again this year. Across the ability range there were many stories of achievement and excellence. Exam results analysis show that students achieved far better GCSE results than students of a similar ability across the country, with an amazing 30% of students averaging 1 full grade or more per GCSE subject than students of similar ability nationally (data based on the Department for Education Progress 8 measure 2014 which shows progress from primary school to the end of KS4). A huge well done to everyone - good luck in the next stage of your education.
We have had a great start to the Autumn Term here at Allithwaite. We have welcomed lots of new starters in Reception and Nursery and they are all settling in well. The Reception children all have buddies in Year 6, who are helping them settle into school life. Our two Nursery rooms have been decorated and refurbished over the summer and the children are loving the new space. The younger children have spent a lot of time outside in
members of the community to come forward and share their memories, short stories, poems and songs. If you would like to contribute please call Julia Brown, Chair of Governors on 58626 by no later than 9th October 2015 to share and discuss ideas. There will be a collection on the day, and all monies raised will be donated to an animal Charity of the families choice. There will also be a book for you to share your fond happy memories for the family to keep.

Mrs Jacqueline Johnson, Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Flookburgh Primary, sadly, passed away during the summer break. On behalf of Mrs Johnson’s family, Flookburgh School would like to invite you to join us to share our memories and celebrate her life. The service will take place on Friday 23rd October 2015 at 2.30pm in the school. To help make this a memorable occasion, they are asking for former pupils, friends and
animals in a craft event and played creative team games outside on the school playground.

given the school some new items for outdoors. We have a fabulous story telling chair, a new bird table and a great climbing wall. The children are all thrilled with these new additions. Year 5 and 6 pupils have taken part in Bikeability. Year 3 and 4 have started work on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and are already hooked! Year 1 and 2 have been looking at the story “Dogger” by Shirley Hughes and are also looking at the topic “Ourselves” this half term. We are looking forward to Writing Week next month and our Harvest celebrations, it is going to be an exciting year!

FOOD & DRINK
Apples & Plums time for picking!
T
here are three orchards on Low Sizergh farm and picking season always leads to a rush of activity given a few hours of sunshine we're off with step ladders, crates and baskets to pick the ripe plums, damsons and apples. The crop goes straight on to the shelves of the farm shop and up to the kitchens where it is transformed into chutneys, pies and tea room specials. And there’s real comfort to be found in the arrival of these autumnal dishes as the days begin to shorten. Here’s one of our simple but delicious favourites…
Warm apple and plum pudding Ingredients
115g unsalted Winter Tarn butter 175g Golden caster sugar 1 medium Low Sizergh Farm egg 200g plain flour 1tsp baking powder Pinch of salt 1tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground nutmeg 50g chopped mixed nuts 1 cooking apple, peeled, cored and diced 9 Sizergh orchard plums 2tbsp glace ginger, chopped
Method 1. Heat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/gas 4. 2. Beat the butter until creamy, then add the sugar. Continue beating until light and fluffy. Gradually add the egg beating well after each addition. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg and fold into the mixture. 3. When combined add the nuts, apples, plums and chopped ginger and mix in. 4. Spoon the mixture into a prepared tin and bake in the oven for around 45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the sponge springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. 5. Remove from the tin and serve warm, with custard.

Comfort food
A
utumn is upon us, it’s the season of Soups, crusty bread and warm puddings and ……. So here’s a favourite recipe.
A bread and butter pudding. Ingredients
12 slices Grange Bakery thick sliced white bread (or use our Brioche Loaf, for a richer pudding) 50g unsalted butter 8 egg yolks 175g caster sugar 5 drops vanilla essence 300ml milk 300ml cream 50 g dried cranberries or Blackberries Caster sugar, for glaze.
Method 1. Grease 1.7 litre pudding basin with butter. 2. Whisk egg yolks and caster sugar. Bring milk and cream to simmer add vanilla, add to eggs, stirring all the time. 3. Arrange bread in layers sprinkling with cranberries, final layer should be bread only as fruit on top tends to burn. Pour over the custard, and ideally leave to soak for 15 mins. o 4. preheat oven to 180 C. 5. put dish in a roasting tray three-quarters filled with warm water and place in the oven, cook for 20-30 mins until it’s a light set. 6. when ready, remove from water bath. Sprinkle liberally with caster sugar and glaze under a hot grill until the sugar dissolves and caramelizes. While talking pudding’s we do a ‘free from’ range of Vegan and Gluten free puddings. A Sticky Toffee Pudding, a Tangy Lemon Pudding, and a rich Chocolate pudding. They complement are other Gluten free products, Shrewsbury biscuits, a ‘lush’ orange cake, and a chocolate torte with a Belgian chocolate Ganache made with organic cream from Swarthmoor Hall farm. CHURCH NEWS
Churches Together
Hope Church
We appear to be having a season of welcoming new people: Following the retirement of Fr Alf Parker, we now have Father Aleksander Makulski.
St Paul's church have now a new assistant Curate, Rev'd Andrew Norman. We await a new Youth Trust worker, who will soon be here from Norway, Ingebjorg Huso.
St Paul’s & The Fell Church
We from Churches Together do indeed welcome them, and hope they have many happy times here in Grange-over-Sands.
An opportunity for an injection of hope
A group of thirteen of us camped at Newark Showground for four nights over the August bank holiday weekend. We joined with another 1800 on-site (under the banner of Christ Central Churches) people from all round Britain as well as Zambia, Tanzania and Canada. Apart from great banter and great food, everyone joined in as they wished with the worship, teaching, lifezone seminars, prayer meetings etc. Particularly popular with some of our group was the Creative/Prophetic Art Workshop, Colour Run, inflatable games and comedian Andy Kind. We are holding a week of prayer and fasting in the near future - see our website or Facebook page for more details. On Sunday the 4th October 10.30am we will be meeting in Grange Primary School. Steve and Ruth de la Mare will be leading us. All are very welcome.
Whatever our age we all experience times where we lack hope. ‘My Hope’ is for those ill at ease or in despair, the disillusioned, those bullied at school, those neglected by family or friends, the lonely, those longing for a warm embrace, those who need help or feel powerless.
A short film: ‘My Hope’ produced by the B. Graham Association, will be shown on Thursday 12th November at 7.30pm in Victoria Hall Grange. In addition to the film there will be contributions from both young and old who have found renewed ‘hope’ in the Christian message. Light Refreshments will be served. It’s a free event organised by representatives of different local churches.
United Reformed Church
Both have been much appreciated.
The year has really turned into autumn now, although September has been really beautiful up to going to press. Harvest services are over. We now see the summer activities closing down, as the usual winter interests begin. In the case of the United Reformed Church in Grange, the Traveller’s Tales have finished and the last walk has taken place.
Now the Women’s Guild look forward to their first meeting of the season on Wednesday, 7th October at 2pm. This will be a Devotional Meeting and visitors/new members will be very welcome. They will be planning their Charity Coffee Morning which will be held on Saturday, 24th October, 10pm-12noon. Please support this event as it will be for a good cause. Watch out for posters. Please remember, we will be very pleased to see any of you at our regular services.
Goodbye Fr. Parker – Welcome Fr. Aleks The August Bank Holiday weekend was an eventful one for the parish. On the Friday evening “Voce”, winners of “Cumbria has Talent 2013” returned to Grange, following last year’s Christmas spectacular, for a concert of summer music, performing to an audience of 75+ in St. Charles church. On the Sunday we said our goodbyes to Fr. Alf Parker, parish priest for the last 15 years. A full church for both masses said “vale pater” – (goodbye Father)
in recognition of “sacerdos magnus qui in diebus suis placuit Deo” (a great priest who in his days pleased God). His last parish mass was followed by yet another “gargantuan spread of epicurean delights” at which he was presented with a handsome cheque to use as he pleases. A fitting send-off for a popular priest. The following day saw the arrival of his replacement, Fr. Aleksander Makulski, a Polish priest on loan to the diocese from his native Poland who wishes to be known as Fr.
Nutwood Medical Practice Flu vaccine information We continue to advise that everyone over 65 years of age should have a flu vaccine and also patients aged under 65 years who fall into an “At Risk” group, for example, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and stroke. Registered Carers and pregnant women are also eligible. However, this year we will not be sending out any reminder letters. Please see below for details of our open clinics (no appointment necessary). We will also be advertising them in the Health Centre, on our website www.nutwoodsurgery.co.uk and on repeat prescriptions. If you fall into one of the above groups but choose to have your flu jab elsewhere, or decide not to have one this year, we would be grateful if you could let us know so we can amend our records.

Alek(s) “Pragniemy bardzo serdecznie powitac ksiedza Alek” – (we wish to extend a very sincere welcome to Fr. Alek). Fr. Alek is not entirely a stranger to the North-West of England having served for several years in the Blackburn area, a brief spell in Barrow and most recently six years at Appleby prior to his arrival in Grange. He has already visited Cartmel Grange Nursing Home and is getting to know the workings of the parish. No doubt he will soon become a familiar figure around the town.
With regard to other activities in the parish, the Year of Priestly Vocations has already begun and there will be a holy hour on Fridays from 10-00am to pray for vocations to the priesthood. Mass will also now be celebrated each Saturday morning at 10-00am. Finally, wherever you go and whatever you do in the coming weeks, may the Good Lord go with you. LG. PS. Why isn’t “phonetic” spelled the way it sounds?
After well over 40 years of dedicated service to the Fell Church as verger and caretaker, Miss Freda Burton has decided to take a wellearned rest and let others take the strain. The congregation joined the Rev. Nick Ash to say a big thank you to Freda and present her with a bouquet of flowers and card as a token of appreciation for all that she has done for her beloved Fell Church. Freda has been a member of the Fell Church since she was born, which was in a house almost opposite the church and where she still lives. Over the years Freda encouraged the social use of the building and helped make the Fell Church so special and well-respected in the local community. Doug Ratcliffe, who will be taking over the reins from Freda, is determined to make sure this tradition is upheld in the future.
Our Harvest Festival services will take place on Sunday October 4th at 9.30 am in the Fell Church and 11.00am in St Paul’s. There will be a Harvest tea served at St Paul’s commencing at 4.00pm after which the auction of produce will once again be in the capable hands of Mr Colin Milner. The proceeds of the auction will go towards supporting United Society’s nursing school in Bollobhpur, Bangladesh.

S.L.D.C. come to Grange to discuss the Lido.... On Wednesday 19th August, a Leader Surgery took place in Victoria Hall and was attended by Peter Thornton (PT) and Lawrence Conway (LC) of South Lakeland District Council (SLDC), Grange Town Council and members of the public. However, residents B Braysher and K Gaskin were in attendance and have supplied us with the following notes from the meeting:
Contemporaneous Notes. Lido.
1. P.T. (Peter Thornton) informed us that there will be no pool, too much money/not viable. 2. Problems, the Lido would not becommercial and is on the wrong side of the track. 3. The Lido being a Grade2 listed building brings extra restrictions and cost. Although it may be possible to have the listing removed it would be very costly. 4. SLDC. informed us the building would remain, it cannot be demolished. We know certain areas were detailed in the listing such as the diving board area and the shape of the pool.
5. The seawall, P.T. knew that Network Rail would be working on the Prom, but not what work was to be carried out, enquiries to be made. 6. The “ makeover” of the Lido would become a public asset, e.g. Prom Art could expand. 7. Some areas might be suitable for letting. This must be run by Grange Town Council; there must be no cost to the ratepayers. P.T. said that Grange raised the highest precept from SLDC. and there should be enough funds. 8. P.T. said the cost of the work could be between 1 & 2 million pounds. B.B. raised the point that money and time had been wasted on previous plans for the Lido. Opportunities missed when under taking a Heritage Lottery Bid. P.T. said that had been a different time when money was available, and that we needed to move on. The work on the lido under consideration was to make everything up to “Health and Safety Standards”. To fill in the pool; leaving a small shortfall; which would define the shape of the pool. To keep and enhance the diving area, as it is detailed in the listing document.
SLDC. would work with Grange Town Council and consult when necessary town residents, to achieve the best possible result. The intention is to retain as much as possible of the Lido, working with listed buildings regulations. Question and Answer session on the Lido Grange resident. Would the lido be open at night? P.T. The Lido should have the ability to be closed or hired out. Grange Resident. Raised the state of the Prom surface. Would this be receiving any work? P.T. No work planned. K.G. Ref the money from the sale of Berners old nursery site. Would the money be ring-fenced for Grange? P.T. No, it would go into a central pot. P.T. informed us that Grange receives a far greater amount than we pay in. Grange is subsidised more than many other places e.g. Arnside. Grange could apply for funding for projects from the New Homes Bonus Scheme. B.B. Ref timeline for the Lido. Would it be completed in my lifetime? (I am 67.)
L.C. (Lawrence Conway) Hopefully. L.C. spoke of all the different stages SLDC. have to go through at each stage of the project; every step could take up to 6 months, plus extra time for any consultations. (Retiring Councillor, Bill Woods, has an idea for the way forward for the Lido - see his letter on page 27.) Plants and Bulbs.
K.G. raised the matter of the withdrawal from supplying plants and bulbs within Grange. P.T. & L.C. could not see that any more funds would be forthcoming. They agreed that Grange residents worked to support the town in all areas and for that reason the town already received extra money and we should apply to the Town Council. P.T. & L.C. are to find out from J. Barlow the outcome of our funding application. Today, 21/8/15 I received an email to inform us that we had been unsuccessful in our application; we do not generate economic growth within the town. P.T. Suggested that we contact local businesses for funding. The Garden Groups already have their support, helping with plants for both the gardens and planters.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Grange now | OCTOBER 2015 - Next deadline 16th OCTOBER
Dear Editor, Today (4th September), people had to be rescued again from the beach at Humphrey Head, someone said they were following the public bridleway sign which is posted at the cattle grid leading onto the bay. The bridleway takes you round the head, and if you do not know the tide times and do not keep near the head you can soon get in trouble. Could there not be a danger sign added to this bridleway sign or (can the sign be) taken down. Also, could there not be a sign to the Head Well? Roy Gibson (a local) Dear Editor, Prom Recreation Facilities. What a brilliant resource for the Town (as is the whole of the Prom). For two years the Prom Youth Project (all volunteers) and a whole host of other volunteers have turned out 7 days a week to allow the rest of us to play. All this costs just £5 a day or a season ticket for £25, covering two adults and all the children. All the money raised is used to improve and upgrade the facilities, just look at the Crazy Golf and the new fencing. What more could you look for in a day out? In October, the facilities are being handed back to Grange Town Council (who have provided support throughout the last two years, along with several others bodies). Have you enjoyed using the facilities? If yes, tell your local councillor! Grange residents need to be active participants in the development of the Town. Kate, Grange Resident and Prom Rec volunteer Dear Editor, Come on let’s celebrate. It is 10 years since the first launch, to build a children’s hospice in Cumbria. So we felt it’s time to ‘thankfully’ celebrate, for all the wonderful support we’ve had over those 10 years from our Grange and district community, raising funds and awareness for this very special service called Jigsaw. So we are having a Free Celebration Concert, at the Victoria Hall, Grange over Sands, on Saturday 21st November 2015, starting at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) with light refreshments during the interval. The concert will feature our own local Bay Community Singers and young musicians, conducted by Mrs Jane Thedham, who will be providing us with an exciting evening of music, both old and new. So please come along and join us for a very entertaining, celebration evening. Reg and Barbara Brown, Grange
Dear Editor:
A meeting of the Trust, which was funded by a bequest from Mr. Thomas Oliver in 2005, was held on the 17th August to approve the accounts for the year ending 31st October 2014. During the year an income of £4,682 was received from investments and it was noted that grants of £2,395 had been given to local groups. Approval was given by the Grange Town Councillors present to submit the Annual Return to the Charity Commission. Local organisations or individuals seeking a grant for a project should contact the Town Clerk for an application form. Ron Shapland. Dear Editor,
I’d like to say thank you to all those allotment-holders who turned out to support the open day, providing visitors with instant feedback to questions about each allotment. I think it is generally true that this was a two-way process, and allotment holders too, felt that they learned things. Their hard work in preparing the site and their allotments for the open day, was also very much appreciated.
LEGAL TALK With
Jamie Williams Solicitor
Thanks too, must go the 5 Grange traders who provided prizes for the raffle – Clare House Hotel, Grange Bakery, Grange Plant Centre, Higginsons Butchers, and Johnstons Jewellers – and to the allotment holders who also donated prizes. The event raised almost £120.
We also had a visit from the National Garden Scheme (NGS) coordinator for Cumbria, which opens gardens to raise money for charity. Subsequently, we have just heard that our application to be a part of the NGS next summer (Sunday, 3rd July 2016) has been accepted. We will be the first allotment to be a part of the NGS in the north west of England. We will additionally be having another open day in 2016, to which all will be welcomed. Bruno Gouillon Chairman, Grange Fell Allotment Society Dear Editor,
May I thank residents who voted for me to represent them on the Grange Town Council but due to “unforeseen circumstances” I have had to resign as a Councillor, and as Chairman. My last act was to appoint a very deserving member of staff to the permanent position of Town Clerk.
During the last 4 months the workings of the council has been streamlined, all committees suspended, decisions are now taken by all councillors at full council, paperwork and reports are being reduced allowing the council to be more effective. By appointing a Town Clerk internally and not replacing the deputy Town Clerk, staffing costs have been reduced by £20,000. Much work is done (by the Council sic) behind the scenes like getting Bailey Lane cleared of vegetation, introduction of £1.20p all day parking at Berners, the upgrading of the bandstand catering facilities for volunteers, progressing a possible Saturday bus service, working with the Chamber of Trade and Prom Art, ensuring the new footpath to Clare House Bridge from Berners is pram friendly, and most importantly promoting communication with residents. A good and improved working relationship has been established with SLDC councillors and officers, who now are well aware and most importantly now listening to Grange residents demand to see a decision on the Lido and work started, in addition to numerous other issues highlighted which affect the Grange area including the Victoria Hall and future housing development briefs. Grange North SLDC Councillor Morrell has been especially active and effective in opening doors to the decision makers in SLDC. A report will be submitted very soon by SLDC officers for approval detailing the proposals for the Lido. Their current thinking is to refurbish the structure of the building, fill the pool area in (subject to listed building consent) and install an artwork piece. Although SLDC will continue to maintain the building they consider it is better managed in Grange by Grange to further develop over time. The big question is, should Grange “manage” it, if so by who (will manage it) and will future funds be available? Should Grange consider asking SLDC now to incorporate in their plan to relocate the children’s play area to the Lido pool area, incorporating the latest play equipment (plus a large sand pit) which can be seen at other playgrounds in the area? This will at least give the Lido a purpose, bring it to life, cater for all ages, is sustainable and fundable now. Future funding may not be available in a few years time. Many residents may not know:
In a few years time the Council will have to find an additional £15,000 towards the cost of running the public toilets when the 5 year grant ceases. The 20p entrance fee only goes someway to help repay £5,000 annually, for a large loan to refurbish these toilets.

Lasting Powers of Attorney
We have not looked at these for a while so here is a quick update. If you lose the ability to make your own decisions about your property and your money or even about where you should live and what care you should and should not receive, who would you want to make those decisions for you? For me, it would be my wife and (until my children are a bit older) my parents. So I have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in their favour. I know that they would make decisions in my best interests at all times. I trust them completely and I have placed no restrictions on when they could act. The LPA for Property and Financial matters has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) so is ready to be used whenever they think it is appropriate. I do not need to have lost the ability to make my own decisions. I could just be physically or temporarily unable to deal with things myself so they can take over straight away. It is possible to limit the LPA so they can only use it if I don’t have capacity but that places obstacles in their way and limits the effectiveness of the LPA. What’s the point? I trust them. Why would anyone appoint Attorneys they did not trust completely in the first place? The LPA for Welfare decisions has also been registered with the OPG and is ready to go immediately if needed, but is more limited and can only be used to make specific decisions that I am unable to make myself. That makes sense. No one should decide where and what care I get unless I can’t choose for myself. The LPA includes the power to give or refuse consent to life sustaining treatment so I would like to have an opinion! LPAs are getting easier to make yourself but beware. If you don’t get them right they may not work as you expect in the future. You can’t amend them later or remove restrictions that you put on if they turn out to be inconvenient. It is very easy to tick the box that says the LPA for finance can only be used if you have lost capacity but that can cause so many problems when you want to use it, it should rarely be ticked. So, even though they are easy to make, they are also easy to get wrong. When you pay us to do them for you, you don’t just end up with the bits of paper. You also get our advice and expertise to make sure you are doing the right thing in the right way.
The Information Centre despite work from dedicated volunteers, costs the council around £12,000 to operate. The Council also subsidises band concerts and the games area on the Promenade.
The Victoria Hall is a very expensive building to maintain, operate and is subsidised by the Council on average £30,000 per year, this will greatly increase in 3 years time once an annual grant from SLDC of £28,000 also ceases.
It is the residents of Grange who pay via the council tax precept to maintain these services so it is vital, residents make their views known, (as) to the future direction the council takes including on the Lido. Grange is very lucky to have dedicated council staff, numerous voluntary groups and councillors, therefore I ask residents to support their work Bill Woods

SOCIETY ROUND-UP
NSPCC Supporters of Grange Over Sands NSPCC enjoyed a most entertaining afternoon at our “Tea in the Highlands” on Saturday, 16th August, in the United Reformed Church Hall. We should like to thank everyone who attended and helped raise the massive sum of £807.02. We should also like to thank Victor Hindle, Sylvia Trohear, and Susan Harrison, who kept us entertained with their Scottish renditions; Margaret Northcott and Joyce Church, who organised the event; and all those who worked behind the scenes. Margaret and Joyce tell us to look forward to their next event in August 2016 entitled “Tea in the West End”. On Thursday evening, 3rd September, the talented Joan Bentley gave a floral demonstration, entitled “The Spice of ….!”, in Allithwaite Community Centre. As usual Joan was thoroughly amusing while presenting some wonderful flower arrangements. We do thank her for her dedicated commitment to the NSPCC and to our supporters who attended that evening and helped raise £267.00. We would like to point out that all money raised by the Grange over Sands NSPCC goes to our local region where it is used to help ensure every child has a safe childhood
Cartmel & District Flower Club On Monday 17th August, we welcomed Derek Morgan from Morecambe, his title being, ‘My Garden Chair’. He explained his chair is a recliner at the bottom of his L-shaped garden so he has a different perspective of the area, seeing many creatures one being a friendly fox depicted in a low arrangement in a mix of orange tone alstromeria, carnations, roses, antherums and foxtail lillie. Derek arranged a beautiful display of tropical flowers in reds and orange antherums, gerbera and alstromeria in an interesting container found at the bottom of his garden to show a sunset over Morecambe bay. We were introduced to his neighbour’s dog through a hole in the hedge while he was stargazing, the arrangement using all white flowers larkspur, roses and chrysanthemums in a tall wine glass to represent a comet he attempted to photograph. The inspiration for his final container was a photograph of a rat’s spinal cord, his creative use of chicken wire and coloured straws. Gladioli, roses and chrysanthemums in pinks and purples ended a most enjoyable demonstration full of fun, beautiful unusual flowers expertly arranged and very amusing stories. Our next meeting in Cartmel Village Hall 21st September at 2pm. Lynda Fraser-Carlisle her demonstration, ‘Spellbound’. Visitors and new members welcome.
Grange Garden Society Member Barbara Ramsden and her husband Peter conveyed the meeting to the Faroe Islands at the August Meeting by accompanying their lovely slides with an interesting account of their visit. This group of spectacular islands is situated 320 km North West of the British Isles forming an archipelago, volcanic in origin, which has been fashioned into a superb glaciated landscape. Towering cliffs fall into the surrounding sea which is never far away and as there is little

Allithwaite and Cartmel WI At the meeting of the Allithwaite and Cartmel WI the business content was briefer than usual this affording us more time to enjoy the paintings and art work of our guest speaker Pat Drysdale.Pat nursed for 35 years in the North East and Carlisle before settling in Lindale when, on retirement, she began to paint. Her paintings were designed initially to stimulate the imagination of children and latterly based on her own encounters and experiences. The members were captivated by her wonderful stories which accompanied each piece and work books were available to view and cards of the pictures were on sale. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th October when members welcome back Lee Kitchingham who will deliver a talk and digital images of the Frozen North.
For further information and details about our WI please contact Ann Anderson on 33696.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society The lecture at the September meeting was given by Dr Rob David on ‘The Yellow Earl in the Arctic.’Dr David began by considering Lord Lonsdale’s expedition in the wider context of arctic expeditions in late nineteenth century. He then explained his research sources – primarily the Lonsdale archive and contemporary newspapers. The possible motivations for the expedition were discussed and then The Earl’s route outlined. This went west across Canada to the north west of Winnipeg, then north to Liverpool Bay, west into the Yukon and Alaska and then south by boat to San Francisco. Journal extracts and letters were used to illustrate the conditions the Earl had to cope with, his hunting activities and various adventures he had while living with the Inuits. Lord Lonsdale brought back a large number of artifacts and animal skins. The best were presented to the British Museum, many others were displayed in the Hall of Lowther Castle and two, a polar bear and a musk ox provide star attractions in Kendal Museum. A fascinating and very entertaining lecture.

As well as reflecting the tragedy of the War, his choice of poetry traces the changing mood from the initial enthusiasm of the early poems to the ultimate, bitter disillusionment of the latter. Following this on 27th October, the Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture will be given by Alpinist Finn McCann. In ‘Great Elevations – a tale of adventure in high places’ Finn recalls his many expeditions to all seven continents and speaks of the personal quest for adventure that has taken him there.

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild. After a break during August, members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met on Tuesday the 1st of September when Sandra Kendall introduced a floral theme. Various stencils of flower heads were available to apply to fabric using Shiva/ Markal sticks. Once the design had been applied, embroidery, either by hand or machine, was used to embellish the design. Sandra provided many samples using the technique which provided us with inspiration and ideas for taking the idea further. Please note that the next meeting is on Tuesday 13th of October when it will be the A.G.M. Once the business meeting is finished, members will be revisiting some well- known stitches. Further meetings will be on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. New members are welcome and if interested please contact the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229-861800.

Grange Probus Club
Grange WI
On 14th September, Ann Kitchen gave an illustrated talk on Nature Reserves of the Arnside and Silverdale AONB. She began by comparing a 19th century map of the area to a modern map showing how rural the area was at that time. She explained how boats from Morecambe brought the first tourists to Arnside. She told how several different organisations were involved in the creation of the AONB. She showed a series of most interesting photos of the most unusual plant and animal life to be found in the area and the measures being taken to protect them. These included rare orchids and animals as unusual as the hairy snail.
The very first meeting of the WI took place in Anglesey on 16 September 1915. Lots of events have been happening up and down the country and will continue for the rest of 2015. Grange WI decided to mark the centenary by planting a tree in Park Road Gardens. On 16 September our President – Joanne – led the celebration with some energetic digging. No WI event is complete without cake and we consumed plenty of chocolate cake, helped down with a few glasses of fizz. More success for our crafty members with 13 golds, 15 silvers, 4 reds and 1 blue at the County Show. At our last meeting David Ratcliffe told us the fascinating story of how running (especially marathons) had shaped his life. At our next meeting on 22 October we will hold our AGM and we are delighted to have Joan Bentley joining us to show us some displays using autumn flowers. Members will also have the chance to have a go at creating their own displays.
Probus is for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members welcome. Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies) As summer fades into autumn, the end of the club competitions is in sight!
The Edna Martland Trophy (best 2 of 3 rounds during the season) was won by Lady Captain, Ronnie Hall. We enjoyed Lady Captain’s away break at Mytton Fold near Clitheroe and had 2 days of beautiful weather and good golf. Thank you Ronnie for organising it. Medal 9 winner: Lesley Wilson, runner up: Christine Bold. Medal 10 winner: Ronnie Hall, runner up: Jill Atkinson.
Grange and District U3A We have had contrasting presentations at our last two general meetings, reflecting the wide interests of members of the U3A and our varied speaker programme. In August Robin Acland presented a literary journey, ‘Keats walks Cumbria’, in which we followed John Keats and his close friend Charles Brown in their journey around the county. September’s meeting provided a marked contract as Phil Eccles took us kayaking with narwhals around Baffin Island – a spectacular expedition illustrated by stunning photographs. Several interest groups have resumed activities after the hiatus of the summer months; badminton in Lower Holker Village Hall, Cark and table tennis in Allithwaite Community Hall have returned to winter timings, whilst the bowling group is nearing the end of its summer programme. The 15th anniversary celebrations closed with a successful exhibition in Grange library – the writing for pleasure group and the photography group displayed their work and the family and social history group provided an impressive display of the findings of research into the individuals named on Grange war memorial. The group hopes to publish its findings in the near future.
A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange .

COFFEE CLUB Nigel Swinford returned to Coffee Club in September, before the visit of the NEO to Allithwaite on October 17th, to share about ‘Music – Food of Love’. He demonstrated with examples the vision and ethos of the orchestra and how they communicate with their audiences. The singers have no set uniform, expressing their individuality, singing with their eyes to an audience, each one an individual loved by God despite their differences and faults. Music takes us beyond academic concepts to express the whole issue of words such as ‘I love you’. Love unlocks all other emotions, especially joy. You can’t be joyful if you feel unloved. Joy is difficult to express, unlike excitement but music can, such as the freedom of Jazz, the identity of Folk Music and the lightness of many J.S.Bach compositions
The success of the NEO was illustrated by a DVD made in 2015 in the Pantheon in Rome, where each person interviewed among the 10,000, from over 86 nations, volunteered their consciousness of God’s presence. In October Melanie Bister will tell of her 8 years learning to ‘Adapt to life in Taiwan.’ The meeting at 10.30am at Abbot Hall is preceded by coffee at 10am. Everyone welcome.
