Grange Ornamental Pond, or ‘the duck pond’ is home to one lonely Muscovy duck called ‘Boris’. Boris just appeared on the pond and whilst volunteers are very pleased to have him they are concerned by the fact that he appears to be very lonely and needs a friend. If you are able to help with finding Boris a friend, we’re sure he would appreciate it! Volunteers have said they a ‘satisfactory payment’ is available to anyone who can supply a Muscovy duck. Please contact: 07531 137971
There is only one edition left before Christmas so it's the last chance to include Christmas notices, church services, gift adverts, party announcements, carol services and and so on. The deadline is 13th November and it comes out at the end of November There is then our final edition of the year which has a deadline of 15th December and comes out just before the new year. We will be having the traditional Christmas messages page in the next edition so if you wish to take a box to wish your customers or friends a Happy Christmas, then please get in touch. The cost is the same as last year at £35 + vat. We will design it for you for free. A very big thank you to the Grange Now team who have put in a huge effort on this issue, and consistently work hard with dedication and good humour.
It’s not too late to fill a shoebox for a child in Romania who will not be enjoying the same sort of Christmas as our children in the UK. For many of Europe’s forgotten children, Christmas Day will be the same as every day – potatoes and bread for their one meal, no new clothes, no gifts to open. You can brighten up the lives of one of these children and make a real difference this Christmas by wrapping a medium sized shoebox in bright paper, filling it with facecloth, soap, toothbrush and paste, hairbrush and accessories, hat, scarf, gloves and socks, stationery, a few sturdy toys (ball, skipping rope, car, doll, dominoes), sweets and £2 to cover transport costs. Pick up a leaflet from church. But you’ll have to be quick! Please hand in your shoebox to Grange Now, Grange TIC or Bay

On Saturday 7th November, Victoria Hall is opening its doors for an ‘access all areas’ tour of the building. If you’ve always wanted to see inside the grand council chamber, or backstage at all the lighting equipment, or perhaps the dressing rooms, then this is your chance. Guided tours will take place at 11am, 12 noon, 2pm and 3pm. The main hall will have tables dressed for a variety of functions, including weddings and children’s parties, in the hope that this will encourage people to book the hall for their function.

Councillor surgery with a difference
The next councillor surgery will take place, in the library, on Saturday 14 November between 10am - 12 noon. In the first of its kind, however, this time you will be able to put your concerns and questions to representatives, not just from Grange Town Council, but also South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Council. Cllr Tricia Thomas will once again be there along with Tom Harvey, who is a Town and District Councillor. Mary Wilson and Eric Morrell, who both represent the District council will also be in attendance and Bill Wearing, who is the County Councillor. The five councillors are giving up their time on a Saturday morning as they are keen to engage with the public and find out what problems you have, or which issues you wish to raise. Pop the date in your diary, this is a great opportunity.
Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines told Grange Now: “The Main Hall, on the ground floor, has 185 square meters of floor space that can be used for a variety of functions from coffee mornings, afternoon tea parties, celebration parties, wedding receptions, dances, exhibitions, table top sales, workshops and meetings.” Sally and Councillor, Tricia Thomas will be on hand during the open day, which takes place between 10am and 4pm, to answer any questions and discuss possible future bookings/events you may wish to hold. During the day there will be, on display, the results of research carried out by the U3A Family and Social History group on the names on the war memorial, and some of the items from the old British Legion club. Refreshments will be available
Helen Skelton kayaks the Arnside Bore and there will be a Bouncy Castle to keep the children amused. If you are interested in hiring the hall please contact Sally Haines on 015395 32375 or email: victoriahallmanager@ grangeoversands.net.
Don’t forget!
On Saturday 28th November, the doors will open once again
Countryfile presenter, Helen Skelton, and the production crew visited Arnside recently and were filming for most of the day. The programme, which aired on Sunday 4th October also covered the new hide at Leighton Moss. Helen tackled the famous Arnside Bore, after receiving some help and training from local sea kayak guides Yamba.

Nepal fundraising tops £26,000 We recently published Alan Oatway’s account of the earthquake in Nepal, and of his intention to raise funds to rebuild the school which was demolished.
Many people have been touched by Alan’s story and have been keen to help, Pauline and Ian Wilson are among them. They donated all proceeds from refreshment sales, during Grange Open Garden Day, giving a worthy £220 to the cause, but not content with that, and in an incredible display of generosity, Pauline decided to sell stock from her business and donate all the proceeds to the cause. She told Grange Now: “It started with our friend Judi, holding a fundraising coffee morning. How could you not be touched by the story of the schoo. The main thing is no one was hurt, our Open Gardens Day raised £220, but I felt I wanted to do more, and came up with the idea of selling my theatrical costumes”.

station, huge car park for customers and donors alike, full collection and delivery service. Area manager, Garrie, welcomes donations and is currently looking for volunteers. A spokesperson for Booths told Grange Now that the site has been let to Age UK for 12 months.
Pauline ran a very successful Theatrical Costume Business for 15 years, and is now selling the beautiful costumes, like the one shown. By selling the costumes at the ‘hire price’ Pauline hopes that this will benefit local societies as well. Please get in touch with Pauline for details of the huge array of costumes and shoes which she has for sale. She has only been fundraising since September and has managed an impressive £1700 so far. Alan Oatway has raised over £25,000 so far
village have been sorted out, a village committee has been formed to look after the building, and they know the money is coming. They have started to build their new school! For more information about the project go to: junipertrust.co.uk/projects/simi-gaonsecondary-school-rebuild and updates will be posted there when available.
The work of the Simigaon Village Fund has been continuing through the summer, and the amount raised is now over £25,000 - a fabulous response. The people of Grange have played a big part in this effort , and we are very grateful for the tremendous support they have given. Such is the economy of Nepal that this is sufficient to build the structure of the new school, although the Fund will continue its work to make sure there is enough money to furnish and equip the new school, and maybe then help out with the new Gompa as well. The logistics of getting the funds to the

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP
One of the major changes announced in the summer Budget was that of the new inheritance tax residence nil rate band which relates to the additional inheritance tax allowance in respect of the family home.

All individuals still receive their current nil rate band of £325,000 which has been frozen since 2009 and will remain frozen until April 2021. The additional residence nil rate band of £175,000 only fully comes into force in April 2020. The allowance first becomes available in April 2017 at £100,000 and increases gradually until 2020. As with the existing nil rate band the new property nil rate band can be transferred between spouses and civil partners. This means that a married couple could pass £1 million in 2020 to their children inheritance tax free. There are - of course – specific rules. For example, the additional nil rate band is only available when a residence is passed on death to ‘direct descendants’ of the deceased. Of course, to receive the full additional nil rate band the property would need to be worth at least £350,000 for a couple.
Grange now | NOVEMBER 2015 - Next deadline 18th NOVEMBER
There are certain scenarios which may warrant further investigation, for example, what if you have a discretionary trust within your will into which you are leaving your share of the property? The trust is not one of your direct descendants and therefore would the additional residence nil rate band still apply?
Clearly the new rules are beneficial since at worst there is no change and at best a couple receive an additional £350,000 allowance – although as ever it is a case of checking how the rules apply to you as an individual.

LOG FIRES, FESTIVE HOSPITALITY AND HEART-WARMING FOOD
First responders, special constables, volunteer librarians, volunteer ambulance drivers, volunteer youth workers and many more all do hugely valuable work in helping to protect local services, and should be applauded for giving up their time. But is it progress to ask well meaning volunteers to take the place of (rather than complement) trained and experienced staff? Take our police service. Chief Constable Jerry Graham has spoken out against proposals for further cuts which would leave policing in Cumbria “unrecognisable”. Essentially, he warns, the service could become a ‘blue light only’ service. So would the cuts really result in “serious degrading of policing for the county”. If so, what does it mean for traffic policing, crime investigation, and our safety? Talking to a first responder this week in Milnthorpe, I asked him what the need was for First Responders so close to the hospital. He told me how easy it is for an ambulance to end up in Ambleside, or at Lancaster infirmary, and to then become delayed as we are such a rural environment. But, is too much asked of first responders? The courts in Kendal are closing. People will now have to travel to Barrow or Lancaster. This month's county report is asking for volunteer librarians. Did you know that Grange library is the only face to
face contact point with Cumbria County Council on the Cartmel peninsula? As we go to press we have just heard that funding is to be withdrawn from Young Cumbria threatening the closure of Cumbria youth groups. Good decision? The council’s hope is that volunteers will come forward to take it on. All these services contribute to our society and community well being. We have to ask where does it end and who decides where the cuts should fall. We are not a political soapbox publication and are not here to point the finger. But, we invite you to have your say, either through the letters pages of local papers like this one, or indeed direct to your local MP if you feel that local services like Police, libraries, public toilets and meeting places are important.

WINTER WEEKENDS AT HOLKER
Grange dentist, David Tomison, will leave his home in Allithwaite in mid November to spend three weeks carrying out dental surgery from a boat on the Amazon. David is married to Allithwaite Year 2 teacher, Sarah, and is father to James, Bethany, Ruth and Leah. At Grange Now, we were fascinated to hear more about David’s trips to the Amazon, and we presumed he would be fundraising for the trip, but we were surprised to hear that David funds the trip himself. He told us: “Personally I don't need funding as I have paid all costs myself, but I do buy stuff out there such as toothpaste/brushes to give away to the communities along the river. Many of my regular patients in Grange have already donated money, some of which I send to the charity and some I use to buy dental materials that I like to use that I can't get hold of over there. If anyone reading this would like to give a donation, they can give directly to The Vine Trust (details below), who would be extremely grateful.” At the time of going to press David’s patients had generously donated more than £600. How did these trips come about are they your idea? The trips on the boats started officially in 2005, but the first boat arrived in Peru in 2001 and I treated some of the 'Street boys' in a very basic dental surgery on board back then. They [the trips] were the idea of Willie MacPhearson a Church of Scotland minister who, with the help of a few others, acquired a boat, fitted it out and sailed it across the Atlantic and up the Amazon, with the idea of using it as a ferry to raise funds for a 'street boy' project run by Scripture Union in Peru. What motivated you to do it? My motivation was, and still is, my faith in Jesus, who tells us to serve the poor and give hope to the nations. Who pays for supplies? Originally supplies were donated, but as things have developed they are now purchased in Iquitos, where the Amazon Hope has its home base.
The Café, Food Hall & Gift Shop will be open every Friday, Saturday & Sunday from early November until 20th Dec from 10.30am to 4pm. Free parking. Who goes along with you?
Other volunteers come along on each trip, usually two doctors, two or three nurses and sometimes a pharmacist or optometrist and sometimes a helper who can translate Spanish. The rest of the health care workers are Peruvian. How is it all organised?
The Vine Trust organise groups of mainly UK volunteers to allow two trips every month of the year except December. Trips for volunteers last 12 days on the boat after which they are transported back to the jungle city of Iquitos on a fast boat. How long do you go for?
I will be flying out on 16th November and will return on 5th December.
If you wish to volunteer or help in any way you can contact the Vine Trust at vinetrust.org Prince of Wales Dock, Leith Docks, Edinburgh, Leith EH6 7DX.
We wish David, and all the other volunteers, all the very best for the trip.
Cartmel and District AFC are extremely grateful for the Cartmel Village Society’s most generous donation of almost £1,400 towards the purchase of new goalposts and nets for the club’s ground in the middle of the racecourse on Cartmel Park.
We are also indebted to the King’s Arms in Cartmel for their sponsorship of new kit for our “A” team (our third team) which plays on Allithwaite Playing Fields; this new team was formed in 2013 to give extra games to local lads. The team’s manager is Liam Appleby, a young man from Grange whose commitment and enthusiasm has done much to establish the team’s place in Division 3 of the North Lancs and District Football League. To receive such generous support from local businesses

The 2015 Conker Championships, which took place on 26th October in the Methodist Hall, Grange, have managed to produce two new champions. Both from the same family! Siblings, Becky and Douglas McCleery clinched the title of under 10’s champion and over 10’s champion respectively. A fantastic result for the McCleery family. Other families also turned up, and Andrew Gardner is this year’s adult champion. Well done to all. Thanks go to 95 year old Bob Copeland, who was instructing the youngsters in the rules of the tournament whilst they were playing their matches.
first team sponsors, Playdale of Haverthwaite, have just concluded their long-term support for the club and to them, too, we would like to express our appreciation. We hope to announce a new first team sponsor soon.
The youngsters from Grange Youth Theatre entertained throughout. £250 was raised for the Compassion sponsorship of a child in the third world.
Lantern Charity shop reopens
We are delighted to announce that the well loved, and much missed, Lantern Charity shop in Allithwaite has reopened thanks to Felicity Borrowdale from Grange. Felicity read in our August edition that Michael Fieldhouse was, after many years, moving on to to pastures new but that he hoped someone would step in and reopen the shop as a charity shop. Felicity who has volunteered in charity shops for many years decided to take it on. She told Grange Now: “I am keeping the opening times and days the same as before and a number of people who volunteered in the shop for Michael are back

Grange Library is currently looking for volunteers to promote and take an interest in the library service.
Volunteers will not be delivering the work of library staff but will give support to a number of activities, alongside staff to promote the service to the community. If you are interested please contact Kay Metcalfe, Senior Librarian at kay.metcalfe@cumbria. gov.uk or Frances Taylor at frances.taylor@cumbria. gov.uk Recently a meeting was held to thank all the volunteers who helped to run the promenade recreational ground facilities. Many stories were related of families of all ages thoroughly enjoying themselves with crazy golf top of the list.
I must thank all my fellow volunteers for making these facilities available to residents and visitors alike to enjoy. Funds have been raised over the summer which will be re-invested to maintain and enhance the recreational grounds for next season on the promenade.

First of all this month, we must thank all the many younger borrowers from the area who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year. Over a hundred youngsters signed up and well over 50% finished all 6 books. So well done to everyone. It is now only 70 shopping days to Christmas - and by the time you read this it may be substantially less! So just a reminder that as usual we are selling Christmas cards and gifts on behalf of Cards for Good Causes.
As many of you may be aware, we hold events from time to time at the library and would like to hear from you if you would like us to contact you directly re these. Drop an email to the library (grange. library@cumbria.gov.uk), putting ‘event’ in the subject box and we will add you to the database. Details won’t be passed to any third parties and for those who don’t ‘do email’ it’s fine to let us know in person next time you’re passing/or by telephone (015395 32749).

On Thursday 3 December we have author Philip Caine coming to talk about his well-received book ‘Picnic in Iraq’. Philip spent 7 years in Baghdad and experienced first-hand the joy and heartache of the Iraqi people. Tickets are just £1 to cover the cost of refreshments. For those looking for new ventures now that the nights are drawing in why not join a book group? One of
our long-established groups has a vacancy – this friendly group meets in the library for an hour or so, on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30 pm. If you’d like to come along and see what it’s like, the book being discussed next month (Nov 11) is ‘The Coffin Trail’ by Martin Edwards, a Lakeland set mystery novel. Obviously you don’t need to have read it in advance for your ‘taster’ meeting but if you do fancy flicking through it/taking it away to read, just ask at the counter as copies are available. Grange Art Society are holding their annual Autumn exhibition at the library – be sure not to miss out on this feast for the eye. The art works will be on show between Monday 2 November and Saturday 28 November inclusive.
Remember too to check out all the great stuff on the libraries website. There’s a whole range of resources (ebooks, encyclopaedias, magazines, research resources… and you can peruse the libraries catalogue at leisure and manage your library account too! (Just ask next time you visit if you’re unsure of your personal library password as you will need this to access some of the aforementioned.)
Mouth Cancer Action Month
To support November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month, Oasis Dental Care will be offering free mouth cancer examinations to anybody in our local area who would like one. The practice, based on Yewbarrow Terrace, will be offering free oral health checks with mouth cancer examinations throughout the month, in order to give back to our local community and make everyone in the area aware of mouth cancer and the importance of regular check-ups in protecting against this life-threatening disease. If you would like to book an appointment please contact our reception team on 015395 34554.

New Chair and Vice Chair
After discussion about the roles of Mayor and Chair, it was agreed that the same person can occupy both. At the vote, 4 to 3 were in favour of Ron Shapland, who is now Chair as well as Mayor. Tricia Thomas was voted in as Vice Chair. Various public speakers took the floor including Nick Thorne, who congratulated Claire Benbow on her appointment as town clerk. He also encouraged greater teamwork and harmony between councillors which was then echoed by George Parr, who stressed that unity is required. Congratulations to Claire, Ron and Tricia on their new appointments. A not to be missed event on Saturday 28 November,
Tim’s column
The Government has announced it is planning to change the way that it allocates money to police forces. Their new proposals will take about £10 million from the money that Cumbria Police have to fund their services. This comes after the force has already had to find savings of £20 million over the past 5 years and before any further cuts are imposed on them as a result of the Chancellors’ plans to speed the reduction of the budget deficit. There is no way that our local police can find all of these savings without making massive changes to the service they provide us in South Lakeland. There is some talk that all they will be able to do will be respond to emergency situations. The work that we all value in actually preventing crimes and keeping us safe will simply have to be stopped. It is some time since there has been a police station in Grange but I wonder if there would even be a police presence in Ulverston if these proposals are carried through. I cannot believe that the Government has thought through these plans properly and I plan to meet up with the Home Secretary as soon as possible to demand that she reconsiders her plans. This comes shortly after the Government announced plans to close the courts in Kendal and I wonder whether they think we actually don’t have any crime in this part of the world. I only wish this was true.
is the Victoria Hall Christmas fair between 10 am and 2 pm. A councillor surgery is planned for 14th November between 10 am - 12 noon in the library. Tricia Thomas congratulated the Bloom group on a good effort on winning a national award for the station gardens. Congratulations. There will be a public display in December to update residents on the Neighbourhood plan - More details to follow.
We are just passing the first anniversary of the introduction of “temporary” changes to the staffing at the Helme Chase maternity unit at Westmorland General Hospital. These changes meant that the overnight and weekend cover for the unit was provided by on-call midwives so if you want to give birth at the unit during the night you effectively have to wake the midwife and get her to come to the hospital. These changes were introduced without any consultation with patients because they were said to be “temporary” but how long is temporary? I have contacted the hospital trust to insist that they tell us what their plans for the unit actually are. Continuing to claim that the changes are “temporary” is treating us like fools. My biggest worry is that they are seeing these changes as the first step towards closing the unit entirely. Something they know that local mothers do not want but they feel that if they run the service down then popular support for the unit might decline. If this is true it really is very cynical behaviour on the part of the trust. Finally I had a lovely morning at Cartmel Primary School opening their new classroom and generally having a look around the school and finding out what is going on there. Thanks to everyone involved. As ever if I can help you with anything please do get in touch by emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk or calling 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

New Councillor
Last month, we reported on the resignation of Councillor Bill Woods which has left a vacancy on Grange Town Council.
Only one candidate put their name forward, so Pete Endsor, current President of Grange Chamber of Trade, has been elected unopposed. Pete did stand at the last election and was only 40 votes short of winning a seat. He told Grange Now: “I am very pleased to be elected unopposed as Councillor for the vacant seat in South Ward of Grange. I am looking forward to working for the town and it’s residents”. We wish to congratulate Pete and wish him every success in his new role.

Magna Carta celebrations were a triumph The hardworking committee and the teams of volunteers behind the recent Magna Carta celebrations should be applauded for a truly spectacular event. From the exquisite flower displays, designed and brought together under the watchful eye of the extremely talented, Joan Bentley to the those who set up home in Howard Seaton’s field and turned it into a medieval village. At dusk, the facade of the Priory became the backdrop for the Son et Lumiere, an amazing light show depicting the life story of William Marshall. The accompanying soundtrack and entrance of a knight on a horse had the crowds open mouthed in silence. Concerts which took place in the priory over the course of the event were incredibly well attended as people turned out to see the Amabile Girls Choir, La Serenissima and our very own Flookburgh Brass Band.
Mayor’s Garden Party The sun shone brightly for this year’s Mayor’s garden party, which Grange Chamber of Trade were delighted to host again this year. Mayor, Councillor Ron Shapland told Grange Now: “I am supporting the Friends of Grange School in their efforts to equip a new library. “ I was very pleased to be invited to the Chamber of Trade Garden Party to meet members who have very kindly raised money for the Mayor’s Charity which is to support the Friends of Grange School to equip a new library". The weather was very kind to us once again and a good day was had by all. We raised money for the Mayor's chosen charity. A big thanks to Rose and her family at Hampsfell House Hotel for a delicious buffet.

In conversation with...
...award winning Chef, Simon Rogan
It’s 9am on a sunny Saturday morning in October. A lot of people are probably still in bed, but Simon Rogan is leading me through the kitchen at L’Enclume, passed about 15 pristinely dressed chefs, who are already hard at work.
Sitting in the conservatory, Simon starts the conversation by saying that the chefs we have just passed are busy preparing lunch and dinner (breakfast for overnights guests are being prepared and served around the corner at Rogans). “There are over 20 people already at work. I employ nearly 100 people in Cartmel so it annoys me when people say they think L’Enclume is expensive. You have to take into account not just the quality of the food, but the number of people who have had a hand in preparing it, those who serve it, and, of course, the overheads”.
Q
L’Enclume has recently been awarded best restaurant in the UK Food Guide for the third year running. How does it feel. After all the awards you’ve won, is it just same old, same old?
No, I’m delighted I think it is a massive achievement to remain at number 1 and testament and thanks to my excellent team that we have stayed on top.
Q
How important are these food lists to you:
“They are very important because everyone is always looking for the next headline, you know, “New restaurant tops the list” so it’s important to keep on top of your game. Having said that, you
can’t take them too seriously, by that I mean they are very important as you want to keep your restaurant full, the number of covers you do are important, but you can’t let them take your focus away from what’s important. I’m grateful that we’re doing well so I can use the money we make to keep re-investing in the business.” Simon has a policy of promoting from within. Tom Barnes, from Barrow, has taken over from Mark Birchall as Head Chef. Mark, who worked with Simon for 10 years, is set to open his own restaurant next year. Simon told me: “I’m immensely proud of them, and of what they have achieved. I like to see them [my staff] doing well. Why did you choose to open your first restaurant in Cartmel? Smiling, he admitted that it hadn’t been his intention to open a restaurant in the north, “I had quit my job, and to be honest I had been unlucky in that I always seemed to pick the wrong job, or maybe it’s just that I realised I couldn’t work for anyone else. I had to find my own restaurant.” He continued: “ I’m from Hampshire so I was looking for somewhere around that area and my partner, Penny, is from west Sussex so she was keen to open a place in that area, Brighton or somewhere and so the North wasn’t even in our search area. These premises [L’Enclume] came up when an estate agent friend of mine was approached by Jonathan Wood and Richard Davies, who had renovated the place and were looking for someone to open a restaurant in cartmel. It took
Q
me 5 weeks to come and see it and, to be honest, I wasn’t convinced. My heart was still set on finding somewhere down South and I really wasn’t sure that it could work, and Penny was even less sure. Anyway, we took it on, and to begin with it was really tough. We sold everything to buy this place, our house, our car, every last bit of electrical gadgetry - it was a huge gamble and to top it all, Penny had just given birth to our son.” He shakes his head at the memory. “Penny moved up when our son was 8 months old” Thirteen years later and Simon and Penny have 6 restaurants under the ‘Rogan and Co’ banner: Simon is justifiably pleased with what they have achieved: “we have managed to do it ourselves” he told me, “we have resisted backing from investors over the years and everything is under mine and Penny’s ownership, and we are very proud of that. We’re a good match. I’m an optimist and Penny’s a realist. I would spend, spend, spend but she keeps me reigned in” he said with a smile. Simon and Penny also have a farm on the outskirts of Cartmel which provides nearly all the ingredients for L’Enclume and Rogans. Simon is well known for foraging for ingredients. What motivates you now. What makes you jump out of bed in the morning? “A third Michelin star for here [L’Enclume]. I really want that, and one for The French.” He continued: “I don’t stand still I want to keep evolving and bring new things to the table.
Q
Q
Do you have time for hobbies? “Yeah, I love cycling. And tennis. To be honest I have relaxed a little bit this year. we have managed to get in a couple of holidays and taken a bit more time out. At my age I need to start thinking about slowing down (he’s 47). What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you at work? After a bit of thought he said: “Dan [Head Chef] and I had been been working flat out at the The French. It was the week we opened and we didn’t leave the hotel at all, just worked, and cooked non-stop, and about 3am Dan would nip out to get us a MacDonalds” (oh the irony). Simon shakes his head and continues: “On the Saturday night Dan said a few of them we’re going out for a pint and a kebab. I didn’t want to go but I asked them to bring me a kebab back. So, there I was, in the bath, bottle of beer in one hand, kebab in the other. I remember taking a bite and the next thing I knew I woke up in a freezing cold bath, swimming in the remains of cold, congealed, soggy kebab.” He shakes his head: “not something I’d like to repeat”. Nice to know he’s a regular guy, just like the rest of us.

A return to the Pig & Whistle
Tim and Emma Smith have made a welcome return to the Pig and Whistle in Cartmel. They have been in and around Cartmel for the past 20 years but they first ran, what was then just the bistro, from 2001 to 2004 before Tim took over as chef at The Cavendish Arms, where he would then stay for the next 12 years. An occupational therapist career (for Emma) and 3 sons later, and Tim and Emma are back at the helm. Emma has already done a great job of making the two bar rooms warm and inviting. With tartan runners, a roaring log fire and plenty of candles you just want to get cosied in for the night, and with real ales, good wines and great food, what’s to stop you? The bistro offers intimate surroundings which, once again, are simply and tastefully decorated. Separate from the bar, the bistro is perfect for parties and private functions.
Tim’s first job was a coal miner prior to retaining as a financial adviser. However, as he told Grange Now: “I have a real passion for cooking and food and, in 1994, I finally decided to follow that and re-train as a chef”. Emma continued: “we have inherited a greenhouse and some of the locals have kindly donated a variety of herbs and plants to get us started. Fingers crossed, we are hoping to grow our own produce, on a smallish scale, in time for next season”. Tim continued: "I intend to offer good quality food

The pub and bistro are a real family affair with two of their sons already taking an interest and helping out. Their eldest, Sam, helps out front of house when he is home from university while Jackson, 14 has been a great asset to his Dad in the kitchen helping out as a kitchen porter. Please see their advert for full details of opening times.
First Responders would like to say a very big thank you to them all for their generosity.

69th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting The 69th Christmas Tree lighting will take place on 5th December with the fun starting at 6pm. The tree, which is situated opposite Hazelmere Bakery, looks wonderful when all lit up, and the lighting ceremony sees people of all ages coming together to sing carols, see Santa and generally join in the fun. It really is the start of the festive season for Grange. However, as with anything, decorating the tree and keeping it lit up through the festive period costs money so the hardworking committee are asking for donations. Whether you’re a business, an organisation, a resident or a visitor, all contributions will be gratefully received. Gary Johnston of Johnstons of Grange told Grange Now: “Having this tradition is solely due to the very generous contributions received, and we are once again asking if anyone would like to make a contribution towards the lighting of the Christmas Tree that is situated in the Ornamental Gardens.”

Christmas Extravaganza This year sees the 5th Christmas Extravaganza, organised by the Chamber of Trade, and every year it gets better and better. The event takes place on 5th December and starts at 10am with craft stalls in St Paul’s, the Methodist Church Hall and the old Parish Hall and culminates in the lighting of the Christmas tree at 6pm. There will be something for everyone with fairground rides, birds of prey, Taffy Thomas the storyteller, Evsie the caricaturist, Christmas card competition by the children of Grange, Bongo balloons, mulled wine, Flookburgh Brass Band, zumba dancers, and not forgetting the main man himself, Santa, who will be in his grotto! He was very popular last year with over 100 children visiting.

Please come along to enjoy this wonderful event. Grange Chamber of Trade are urging everyone to: “Light up Grange! Please do your best to light up your business with as much bling as you can. ART & MUSIC
Featured Artist:
When he couldn’t find a decent postcard of Grange to send to a friend, Andy Mortimer decided it was time to make his own! Five years and 10,000 cards later, his postcards and greetings cards are still selling well. But what gives him most artistic satisfaction are his large-scale canvas and paper photographic landscape prints. You have maybe seen some of his photographs in the new Grange Health Centre or on some of the panels on the old lido on the Prom. He also has his pictures in hotels, medical centres, dentists and private collections in this country and abroad. Andy moved to Cumbria in 1968 from Newcastle–upon-Tyne, where he had studied Art at university and trained to teach. He also holds a degree in Art History from the Courtauld Institute in London and was made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts in 2012 for his “excellent work in digital print and design”. Andy, as a successful landscape painter, was a founder member of the Northern Fells Craftsmen a collective of painters, potters, textile artists, silversmiths and print–makers living around Caldbeck in the North of Cumbria. He moved to Grange 21 years ago, having taught in secondary schools and then trained teachers at Charlotte Mason and St Martin’s Colleges. He became a recognised art consultant in Higher Education nationally and internationally, was visual arts officer for Cumbria County

The Allithwaite Boys
Photographer, Andy Mortimer
‘The Allithwaite Boys’ is a book that pays tribute to the sacrifices made by men from one small community. It exemplifies the human cost at the centre of the tragedy of war. Co-authors, Mervyn Hull, Pat Rowland and Barbara Copeland, all of whom live in the Allithwaite parish, have compiled and written this book to mark the centenary of the First World War and to commemorate those who served and lost their lives in this devastating conflict. Research by the authors discovered stories of courage, pride, sadness and loss. The stories of the ‘Allithwaite Boys’ helps us to think about the impact of the war on their families and the community. The book will be launched at a ‘cheese and wine’ event, on Saturday 7th November at St Mary’s Church, Allithwaite. The event starts at 7pm and an extract of a DVD, which will be released at the same time, will be shown. Books will be available to purchase at a special price of £5. Copies of ‘The Allithwaite Boys’ book and the DVD are available from St.Mary’s Church, from some local shops or by calling 015395 33770.

Council and then Director of the Arts Council’s Creative Partnerships project for Cumbria, based in Barrow and Whitehaven. In 2008, increasingly frustrated at not ‘making’ things, Andy bought a digital camera (and a kayak!) and set about learning new skills and pursuing his own creative interests. Living next door to Cedric Robinson, the Queen’s Guide to The Sands, helped as it offered Andy the opportunity to study Morecambe Bay when he accompanied Cedric, testing the Sands, or on charity walks. admits to becoming a bit of a Bay ‘nerd’, fascinated by its ever-changing light and moods. But this is what interests him in his photography colours, tones, textures, shapes and pattern – and he is currently working on a series of more abstract images which he hopes to exhibit in 2016. He is also about to print a new series of Grange greetings cards to replace the postcards which people are buying fewer of, now we are in the age of the iPhone and the selfie. èè See more of Andy’s work at www.bayscapes.co.uk

Happy Days Out in the Lake District A new children’s picture book has been launched by Kendal writer, Bonnie Quantz, in collaboration with local illustrator, Piers Harper. Happy Days Out in the Lake District, featuring well known local attractions, is aimed at preschool children. Author, Bonnie, along with her husband and young daughter, moved here from Canada, and has enjoyed many lovely days out in the Lake District. Bonnie told Grange Now: “At the end of lovely days out with my little girl, I wanted to talk to her about what we had done, and what she had enjoyed. I looked for books aimed at preschool children that would help me do that but couldn’t find any, so I wrote this one. It is aimed at local parents who want to read about the area with their children, and at tourists looking for a souvenir of the time they spend here.” The book has been beautifully illustrated by Piers, who was our featured artist April. Based in Grange, Piers has worked as an illustrator

and writer of children's books since 1990. His publishers include Random House, Walker Books and Scholastic. One of his most well known titles is ‘Snow Bear’ which sold 2.5 million copies. Piers told Grange Now: “ When Bonnie approached me about the book I thought it was a great idea,” said Piers. “I’ve really enjoyed drawing the local attractions, and I hope parents enjoy sharing the pictures with their children."
A season with a difference
Westmorland Orchestra's 71st season started with a Study Day in September which attracted musicians and new members of all ages from across the region. With conductor Richard Howarth at the helm we worked through Resphigi’s Pines of Rome and kick-started rehearsals for the first concert of the season on December 5th. In this ‘season with a difference’ a unique collaboration on March 12th 2016 will see the Westmorland Orchestra and the Westmorland Youth Orchestra coming together
in a joint concert featuring Grieg, Khachaturian and Gershwin, a specially commissioned work for the combined orchestras by Roland Fudge (The Long Pursuit) and on the 150th Anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth a musical selection from the ballet film The Tales of Beatrix Potter by John Lanchbery. www.westmorlandorchestra.org.uk carries more information about the orchestra. Sizergh Apple Cake The fine dry autumn that we’ve had has done wonders for the apple harvest at Low Sizergh farm. The Park family teenagers were bribed into the orchard with the promise of a ride in Grandad’s Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon, circa 1949, recently renovated. The three orchards on the farm received a transformation two decades ago when loving restoration by the National Trust’s Brian Fereday brought back to life varieties that suit local growing conditions. Beauty of Moray is a cooking apple first recorded in Scotland in 1883. It grows well in our local climate and is used here in a German-style cake, which has also been a recent favourite in the tea room:

Bake in the oven for around 1hour until the top goes brown. Leave to cool and sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve warm with custard.
ovember is awash with wonderful seasonal food, and it’s no coincidence that you can achieve some delightful flavour combinations using the bounties of autumn. Some of our favourites include our richly flavoured, local game from cartmel valley paired with sweet root vegetables that have been nipped by the first frosts. Followed by a suitably carbrich pudding filled with some of the seasons finest fruit crops – apple pie perhaps, or mulled wine poached pears? Bonfire Night is the perfect
opportunity to rustle up something fun and easy for family and friends, that will keep you warm whilst watching the fireworks. It also happens to be BRITISH SAUSAGE WEEK, so why not celebrate the great British banger at the same time? CHURCH NEWS
St Paul’s, Grange The Harvest Festivals at both the Fell Church and St Paul’s raised £195 for the Nurses Training School in Bollobphur. The Harvest decorations in church are truly inspirational and we would encourage visitors to come in and view the work of our creative flower arrangers. For those interested in the reordering, a display explaining
the phasing of the work is on the boards by the organ. The recent open meeting with the architect was well-attended. A social space has been created at the rear of the church which will be useful for our programme of forthcoming Christmas events. This is a non-permanent trial of how we may design more social space in church.
November is, of course, the time for remembrance and there will be the All Souls Service at 3.00pm on
Sunday 1st November in St Paul’s. A wreath and cards are provided in the Lady Chapel to enable the names of departed loved ones to be written down and these will be read out during the very moving service. On Remembrance Sunday, November 8th, the town civic service will be held at St Paul’s at 2pm followed by the procession to the War Memorial for a short service and the laying of the wreaths.
Churches Together in Grange-over-Sands and District. By November, most Church related events and Meetings are up and running again. Even the most welcome Indian Summer has not stopped this happening. The last Committee meeting of Churches Together in Grange and District feels rather a long while ago, being at the end of September. The usual reports
St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s
Congregations in catholic churches have not, in general, been noted for the quality of their singing over the years in spite of many magnificent settings of various parts of the Mass which some of the great composers have written for choirs of all denominations.
Perhaps this is about to change, at least at St. Charles church, where we have now managed to acquire the services of an organist for the

The Men's Ecumenical Breakfast will gather at the Thornleigh Hotel, on the 14th November to hear from Mr Brian McCann more about Age Concern. All men welcome at 8.45am. The Cross of Unity, will arrive
9am mass on a Sunday morning. The singing has improved enormously – though not up to concert level yet! Perhaps we should all remember that “by singing we pray twice” (through the words and the music). It seems that the winds of change may be rising in some of the more influential areas of the Catholic Church although these “winds” are nothing more than a “gentle zephyr” at the moment. In a summary of responses to a consultation amongst the laity
St Mary’s, Allithwaite
The morning service on September 6th was the last with Rob as our Vicar and there was a good turn out for a Bring and Share lunch when we said our farewells and made a presentation to Rob and Tracey in appreciation of all they have contributed to the life of St Mary’s over the past five years. A good contingent of members travelled to Whitehaven on September 21st to share in his installation at St James’s Church, a beautiful building in the town centre, so a very different kind of parish and we pray that
at Grange Methodist Church from Field Broughton Church, on Sunday 8th November. This Cross was specially made some years ago, and travels round the Churches, staying about four weeks, before moving on.
A new diary of events planned this November to April 2016 will soon be available from any Church, and the Information Bureau. taken earlier this year by The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales on the subject of marriage and family life. With regard to more everyday matters, during recent weeks there has been one baptism, the funeral of Jim Byrne who was a long standing parishioner, and two weddings – we send our best wishes to the two happy couples. Finally, wherever you go and whatever you do in the coming weeks, may the Good Lord go with you.
God will really bless his ministry there.
United Reformed Church Harvest is now past and we look forward to settling in for the winter.
We are hopeful that there will be a positive outcome to the joint Church Meeting of our church with the members of the Methodist Church. More news next month.
Our Women’s Guild are now meeting regularly on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm. Highlights in
November include a devotional with Revd Jo Rand on the 4th, Life of Music with Victor Hindle & Sylvia Trohear on the 11th, and Revd Pam Noonan: My Life Journey on the 18th. We will also be preparing for our Christmas Fair on December 5th as part of the Grange Christmas Extravaganza. Enjoy the Autumn Colours!
Christingle at Cartmel Priory Christingle is a celebratory event which takes place in thousands of churches and schools across the country.
Although each church or school celebrates in its own way, the spirit of Christingle remains the same: coming together as a community to celebrate, whilst helping children who are in desperate need of support. The highlight of the service, which includes songs, prayers
Grange Methodist The Women’s Network at Grange Methodist Church met on Tuesday afternoon, when four workers from St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston came to speak. They told of the work of the hospice in caring for sick people and their families in different ways. The work costs 2.6 million pounds and relies on voluntary
and a collection to help support the work of the Children’s Society, involves the lighting of the Christingle candles under dimmed lights – a moment filled with awe and wonder for both children and adults. Come and experience this special event for yourself in Cartmel Priory on Advent Sunday, 29th November at 11am. You will be given a warm welcome!
donations, the income from the charity shops, the Barrow furniture warehouse and the monthly lottery. There is a scheme where volunteers can visit patients and an appeal was made for any volunteers.
At their Orangery, meals and snacks can be provided, and the ladies in the audience realised, again, what a worthwhile work it is. Joy Campton chaired the meeting and the pianist was Elizabeth Armstrong.
Our 150th anniversary celebrations are continuing with two events in November - on the 7th we will be remembering the “Allithwaite Boys”at a wine and cheese evening (see page 18). On the 21st November a family ceilidh from 6-10pm at Grange Fell Golf Club. Then on December 15th we are looking forward to a Christmas concert with the Levens Choir.
All events are open to everyone and further details are available on the church website (www.allithwaitechurch.org.uk) or by telephone to 015395-35950.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Circumzenithal arc (Upside down rainbow!)
On 28th September, five children from Allithwaite were amazed to see an ‘upside down’ rainbow, and they managed to capture this photograph on an ipod touch. According to the Met Office website: Despite actually being quite common they are rarely spotted. In order to be able to see a circumzenithal arc, a combination of atmospheric conditions and that the height, depth and position of the ice clouds must be right as the cloud needs to be at a specific angle convex to the sun. The position of the observer is also important since its visibility can vary greatly over short distances.

Winter Migrating Birds
Brown robin
A typical, but mild Autumn is well underway, with the tree leaves changing colour, a heavy dew in the morning and the sound of Geese passing overhead. Martin mere wetland centre in Lancashire has over 20,000 Pink footed geese overwintering from Greenland and Iceland, of which, many would have passed over here.
I heard my first Redwing on the 7th October and soon the woodlands and gardens will be packed with these little Thrushes. They will be closely followed by Sparrow hawks too, as they look to benefit from the influx of potential winter food. Redwing can be seen in sometimes large flocks flying overhead, sometimes mixed with Fieldfare and Mistle thrush. It is always worth checking the promenade for overwintering species such as many Ducks,
Geese and waders. At high tide you may see Goldeneye or Red breasted merganser as well as passage birds, and we may get Twite on the prom again. I have heard a couple of Grey wagtails in town too. We shall soon be in the woods undertaking the coppice work. Vital to keep parts of the woodlands diverse, important for many species but especially Butterflies such as the High brown fritillary which has not had the best season due to the wet spring.
There are several walks and work parties planned throughout the winter. If you would like to volunteer for a day, you will be very welcome and you may learn new skills, or even some traditional ones too, and you will be helping the local wildlife. For more info, visit cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk or call; 01539816300 Thanks, Tony, res manager.
Early arrival of Siberian Swan heralds long cold winter
Grange now | NOVEMBER 2015 - Next deadline 18th NOVEMBER
On Sunday 11 October, a Siberian Swan landed in Britain and started a storm of speculation that we are set for a long harsh winter. Apparently, the bird arrived 25 days
The mild and wet winters of Britain, along with our numerous estuaries full of food, create a brilliant winter haven for birds escaping the cold of the arctic or northern Europe. Autumn berries are also big draw for flocks of thrushes which arrive to feast on our abundant harvest. At Vickerstown, Walney Island look out for murmurations of starlings (a beautiful dance done at dusk before the birds roost, in our towns and cities). Visit South Walney Nature Reserve, to see Brent geese or gaze across Morecambe Bay from Humphrey Head Nature Reserve, to spot curlew.
A cold winter in northern Europe could cause thousands of waxwings to arrive on our shores. They tend to move in flocks arriving in places like supermarkets to strip bushes bare of berries. Great Places to Winter Migrating Birds in Cumbria, is available for free at cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk
earlier than year and it is also the earliest date on record, leading National newspapers to state that we could be facing the coldest winter for 50 years. The arrival of the
swan is not the only portence of cold weather. The strongest El Nino for 65 years has had forecaster predicting winter conditions on a par with those in 2009/2010. Best get that boiler serviced!
WHAT'S ON
Join the fight against human trafficking Brazilian born local mum, Andrea Mason, has thought of a really fun way of raising awareness of a very serious problem - human trafficking.
Andrea is holding a coffee morning and swap shop whereby you bring 3 items of quality clothing (ladies/ gents) which you no longer wear and swap for something which is ‘new to you’. Andrea told Grange Now: “I really want to make people aware of this devastating issue and I would like to see slavery abolished, once and for all. I thought the clothes swap and coffee
morning would be a fun way of bringing people together and any clothes left at the end of the event will be passed on to charity shops. A speaker from Hope for Justice is going to come along and talk to people about the issues.”
Andrea is covering the costs of the event herself but would appreciate donations of cakes. The coffee morning will take place at Allithwaite Community Centre on Sunday 22nd November from 5 - 7pm. This is a free event and Andrea looks forward to welcoming you.

SCHOOL REPORTS
Flookburgh Primary
As a Headteacher I am tremendously privileged to be in a position to make decisions which affect, shape and often influence the lives of so many children, their families and wider community; the responsibility of such a role is huge! However, becoming Headteacher of Flookburgh CE Primary School is a responsibility which I am thoroughly enjoying. The children, parents, staff and governors have made me feel very welcome and together, we are aiming high! There is truly a ‘family’ feel to the school which is very special; always welcoming, willing to listen and a drive to work together to achieve the best we can – as I say to the children, we are a family and we look after one another, which I am sure is a sentiment you are all familiar with. I am so looking forward to the years to come with Flookburgh School and the community it serves. I believe that together we can all help shape its success, prosperity and growth for future generations ahead. Mrs Pett, Headteacher, Flookburgh School.
Allithwaite Primary
We are really settling back into the school year and enjoying making the most of the beautiful weather. Our Monday morning toddler groups current topic is animals, on Monday 12th we went on a bear hunt, it was exhausting but great fun, we really enjoyed spending time with our new friends Eric, Sophie and Grace. The Reception children are enjoying learning about themselves and are being very creative, the wall displays are beautiful, leaf prints, leaf hedgehogs and lots of self portraits. Tawny owls are having a hoot with their current book "Owl Babies". Barn Owls are really enjoying their science topic - states of matter and will be creating their very own chocolate bars soon delicious! Eagle Owls are looking at the Victorians and studying hard. The year 5 and 6 children came second
at the indoor athletics at Cartmel Priory School. Well done! We are getting ready for our harvest festival and the children are looking forward to doing a "Ready Steady Cook" themed presentation. Our PTA Bags2School collection is being collected on Thursday 12th November and our Christmas Fair will be on Friday 27th November 6-8pm. The Hoots after school club are making the most of the sunshine, al fresco dining and playing in the sandpit.
Grange Primary The Autumn term is flying by at Grange CE Primary School. We hope you had chance to to see us at Prom Art recently, where we displayed our children’s artwork and sold Fairtrade goods from Nepal. Numerous visitors complimented the children on their art, and on the wonderful woollen dragonflies that were made for the Woollen Woods project, by the children and Emma Wheatcroft. The school took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on 25th September raising just over £450 for MacMillan. Year 3 and 4 took part in ‘The BIG Tidy Up’, linking with Fell House School to clean up the town as part of a national project. We have already attended numerous sports festivals, with our Y2 children taking part in Multiskills.
The School’s 57th Annual Speech Night & Prize Distribution took place on 13 October. We were delighted to have Graham Wilkinson, Principal of Kendal College, as guest speaker. Mrs Lownds, Chair of Governors, welcomed Graham, guests from the local community, including Cllr Shapland, Mayor of Grange, past and current pupils, parents, Governors and staff.
The Year 11 leavers returned to receive their GCSE Certificates and other awards. These included, for example, Jemima Freudmann receiving the Canon Thompson Cup awarded to the scholar for outstanding academic work (achieving 9 A* and 1 A grade in her GCSEs), Susanne Hall receiving the Barrow & District Association of Engineers Awards for Performance in Science & Engineering, Annabelle Nicholson receiving the award for outstanding allround pupil, and Tilly Hughes being awarded the William

Wilson Memorial, nominated by her Year 11 peers.
Current pupils received awards for attainment and progress in each subject. There were also prizes for pupils with 500+ housepoints, indicating a sustained high level of work, individual 100% attendance and the form with the best attendance. Pupils that completed the John Muir Discovery Award, an outdoor programme focusing on discovering, conserving, exploring and sharing wild spaces, were also recognised.
Graham presented the awards. Afterwards, he provided a history of his achievements, including working at many prestigious hotels nationally and internationally, as well as for the Queen before moving into teaching and his further education career. Graham inspired pupils about possible plans for the future, providing information about the many varied opportunities available to them.
Pupil Thomas Bowden played a classical guitar piece entitled Rumba and members of the cast of the forthcoming School Production, The Sound of Music, gave a charming performance of ‘So Long, Farewell’.
Dr Williams, Headteacher, provided an overview of pupil successes in 2014/2015 stating: “Tonight, we recognise those with attainment prizes for academic excellence and progress for making great strides forward. Others are receiving prizes for attendance, sport, music or other contributions to the school community. We celebrate your successes and wish you the very best for the future remembering the words of Winston Churchill “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”. Well done, take courage and continue to do your best whatever life brings and success will always be round the corner”. It was a wonderful evening for the school.

with us again this week (12th - 16th Oct), and to link with this we have begun to look at Fairis, the Fair Trade Frog who visits the Women's Skills Workshop in Nepal, and we are going to take him on our own adventures. We have also drawn our own Nepalese flags using our maths skills, as it is considered the most mathematical flag in the world! More on their visit next month!

The first Pupil’s Parliament On Thursday 1st October, the first Pupil’s Parliament for South Lakes took place at the Netherwood Hotel. Organised by David Bone, former Headteacher and now part-time Education Consultant, the event was attended by 16 local primary schools, each represented by 4 members from Year 5 & 6, of their respective school councils. David told Grange Now: “Most of the schools in the locality have active school councils. I have worked with many to help improve the effectiveness of their councils and in developing their committee
skills e.g. running effective meetings incorporating action planning to ensure that ideas are turned into actions.” The parliament was opened by local MP, and leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron. He told Grange Now: “The Pupil’s Parliament is a brilliant idea. It was really exciting to meet so many young people who are thinking about and discussing the issues that they think are important for this area even before they leave primary school. I only hope that my chat about what it is like to be the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale didn’t put

Cartmel Primary What a busy month of October! We all felt very proud to be part of the wonderful celebrations for the Magna Carta. We have had visits to Wray Castle, a Forest Schools trip, science sessions led by Cartmel Priory School staff and some children visited volunteers from Cartmel in Bloom to work on a Physic garden model.
Year 5's had an exciting time on their residential at Tower Wood tree climbing, canoeing, raft building and hill walking. It was an opportunity for the children to experience team bonding, adventure and social aspects of learning in our wonderful countryside! We welcomed Tim Farron MP to school on Friday 16th October to officially open our brand new classroom. The Cumbria County Council funded project included a

them off and that they continue to be interested and even think about becoming councillors or MPs themselves.”
At the end of the day David told us: “The pupils explored the importance of meeting as a parliament with representatives from different local schools”.
The children were given some ‘ice-breaker’ activities to start with pupils going in pairs to other children in the room to discuss their favourite books etc. David continued: “The
children were then asked to think about what some of the key principles of the pupil parliament might be and, as you can see, we got some really interesting answers back” The Pupil’s Parliament will meet again next term with the intention that there will be 3 termly meetings every year.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands
Welcome to our Summer Newsletter, we have filled the last few months with outings, activities and lots of events July
After the excitement of our Strawberry Fete, the residents started on a wide range of arts and crafts projects which would carry on over the next months including making stained glass windows, wool art wreaths, flower vase decoration and painting window boxes. There were regular trips out to Grange for coffee and cake and to feed the ducks at the Ornamental Pond. Some of the residents also went to Holker Hall, the gardens were glorious and we had afternoon tea afterwards in the sun.
August
The residents finished some of their art projects and started new ones, including making wax lamps, mason jar arrangements, jute vases as well as starting on a huge banner for our Macmillan Nurse coffee morning in September. Our outings continued and not just to Grange, we also visited the Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum which was very interesting and the next week dropped into the Antiques Emporium. We went to Cartmel Food Market and picked up some delicious cheese and fresh bread which everyone enjoyed.
We had a visit from Whoopsie Doo, all our residents really enjoy it when she comes – our cats made themselves scarce though!
September
The Vicarage Voices choir who had been away for a few weeks returned, and the music and singing started up again.
We had 2 trips with residents and family members to the Netherwood Hotel for afternoon tea - they put on a great spread for us. We also had a student doing National Citizen Service, Jemima, volunteering for a few weeks – she got on great with the residents. In the middle of the month Zoolab visited, bringing an array of animals, including albino snake, hissing cockroach, tarantula and a huge snail.
Visiting the Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum
A Visit from the beautiful Whoopsie Doo Richard Bromley came, he plays the piano and sings the songs that all our residents know.
Whilst the weather varied, we used the good days to get out into the garden, having frequent games of croquet and well as Tai Chi in the fresh fair.
26
Glenn Giffney, the well known local musician came – he is very talented and we definitely want him to return. Judith Poole also came with some more of Grange’s talented young musicians. The residents always look forward to them coming.
Forthcoming Events Bonfire Night On 5th November Residents’ Xmas Party On 12th December

A very brave Elaine holding a Giant African Smail on the palm of her hand
We had our Macmillan Nurse coffee morning and it was very successful, raising £157.85. The residents finished their banner in the nick of time and also made some hampers to give away as prizes for the coffee morning raffle.
The residents moved straight into making some pumpkin decorations for Halloween – no rest for the wicked! The month ended with a visit from Brantano shoes and had a lot of fun trying and buying a wide array of shoes and slippers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor, The Phantom Poster Thief I know that I am by no means the sole Grange resident spending voluntary time organising events advertised locally by posters. However, the majority of such posters are limited in their tenure; they advertise an event, and are quickly removed by the organisers. But more than a few of us have discovered that our posters are removed almost instantaneously by a resident who appears to harbour malice. Some notices disappear without trace – be they for local Drama Groups, Societies of all descriptions, or events both indoor and outdoor. Many of these bring large numbers of visitors to Grange, who spend time and importantly money supporting local shops and eateries. Prom Art is a case in point – we have a series of banners and posters which promote our events during the upcoming week, but we are able to rely upon a
A909 GRD
colleague who is assiduous in removing 95% of these on Sunday afternoons; even before the event has come to a close. A few others on the outskirts of the town are removed on Monday mornings, so that there can be no confusion as to which day the event is held. Nevertheless, last month I was intrigued to discover on the subsequent Monday that one of our posters in Kents Bank had been ripped from its post and was nowhere to be found. In his or her desperation, TPPT had cut the plastic ties (which was unnecessary, as they are designed to be reusable) and discarded them on the ground. So that this obsessive compulsive concern is with the visual rather than the physical environment. May I suggest that he or she desists? To be detected may prove extremely embarrassing. Peter Nightingale, Chair, Prom Art.
Dear Editor, The recent celebrations for the Magna Carta Flower Pageant at the Priory, Cartmel, was a wonderful event. A lot of preparation and organisation went in to make this Flower pageant a truly memorable occasion. However, I was disappointed, that all of the reports I read and the speeches I heard, at no time was there any mention of Joan Bentley, who took on the mammoth task of organising the flower displays, the researching and planning for months before, the recruiting of helpers, from Flower Clubs and individual flower arrangers. All the workshops beforehand, and all the flowers to order for everybody, the list is endless. What a wonderful lady, that under her guidance and expertise the Priory looked truly magnificent. My part was very small, but there were lots of people who gave their time from flower arrangers, to sweepers, to tea makers, to fetchers and carriers, the stewards, the artists and craftspeople and many more, all working to help make this event so special and a joy for all our visitors to see. SOUTH LAKELAND DISTRICT COUNCIL Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 (as amended) Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations 2012
SOUTH LAKELAND DISTRICT COUNCIL
Development Management Policies Development Plan Document Issues and Options Discussion Paper (November 2015) South Lakeland District Council is preparing a Development Management Policies Development Plan Document (DPD) for South Lakeland outside of the National Parks. This document will provide detailed policies that will be used in the determination of planning applications, and help manage and shape new development. At present, development proposals are assessed against the Core Strategy, Land Allocations and the ‘saved’ policies of the South Lakeland Local Plan 2006. Some policies in the South Lakeland Local Plan 2006 and some topic areas covered by other existing policies require updating or supplementing in order to reflect current guidance and circumstances. We are seeking your views on an Issues and Options Discussion Paper that:
Draft Statement of Community Involvement (November 2015) South Lakeland District Council is preparing a revised Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) that sets out how and when we will engage with the community and other key stakeholders when we prepare and revise Local Plan documents. It also explains how the community will be consulted on planning applications. This SCI updates and supersedes the existing SCI which was adopted in 2006 and amended in 2008, reflecting a changed local and national planning context, including the introduction of Neighbourhood Planning and the Duty to Cooperate.
• Identifies policy areas that may require development management policies; • Suggests various options to policy direction in respect to these policy areas; • Identifies potential impacts in terms of need for additional evidence, taking into account viability implications.
Although there is no longer a legal requirement to consult on the SCI before it is submitted to Full Council for approval to adopt, on this occasion, the changes are quite significant and therefore a public consultation is being undertaken.
This document (along with the associated SA Scoping Report) can be viewed online on the Council’s website at www.southlakeland.gov.uk and at the following locations during normal opening hours:
We are therefore seeking your views on the Draft SCI. This document can be viewed online on the Council’s website www.southlakeland.gov.uk and at the following locations during normal opening hours:

Dear Editor, I am writing regarding my Granddaughter, Kelsey Pearson, who you featured in last month’s Grange Now. Kelsey has the opportunity to go to Dallas (USA) next March to play football with Blackburn. This is the reason I write to see if there is anyone who may sponsor her or donate some funds to enable this to happen for her. I think she has done a marvellous thing and I’m so proud of her. Young people so often get bad press nowadays but this young girl made a decision very early on to make Football her career and has worked at it so hard. It has been extra hard for her living in a small rural area as there are not the same `sporting’ opportunities as there are in a Town’s or City’s but being a girl also! It
takes a tremendous amount of her time and a great commitment from her parents too as she has to travel to Blackburn twice a week for training and once a week for matches all around the country. This in itself is a big financial burden on a young family with other siblings to support (Kelsey has 2 younger siblings age 6 and 1 and a brother of 14 yrs) and so her dream to (not only play for England Ladies) maybe get a scholarship in America one day is a big stretch on already stretched finances for a young family. If anyone is able to offer their support in any way to help make a young local girls dream come true please get in touch with her Dad – Jamie Pearson on 07764879545. Many thanks in anticipation and thanks for reading. Val Pearson – a very proud Nanna!!
Dear Editor, Plastic bottle tops and wooden coffee stirrers Many thanks to all for the amazing response to our request for these items. Sarah has been filling her suitcases for her visits to India and your contributions are already being put to good educational use in the schools there. She now has a plentiful supply for her final trip in the New Year, so we are closing the collection. However, if you still have a bag ready then please pass it in, but you can stop collecting from now! We hope to bring you some photographs in a future issue. Penny Ward (on behalf of Sarah Holroyd, daughter of Derek Jones-Darlington) Dear Editor,
As a member of the Grange in Bloom Group we have been working on some of the gardens in Grange this past week and many people have stopped to ask about the border by the Soroptimists stone (Ornis Ring border) and the wall planting. I will attempt to explain. As you are probably all aware SLDC will no longer be providing bedding plants anywhere in Grange but they will provide funds for permanent planting. They are working on planting plans for the Ornis Ring and Cox’s Corner and the group were promised that these would be in place in time for Cumbria in Bloom judging last July. However this did not take place so I attempted to scatter seeds of phacelia on the Ornins Ring border which is what is termed ‘green manure’. The idea is for the plants to cover the border and a few months later they are dug into
the soil to provide nutrients. Sadly it didn’t turn out as I hoped. Firstly I had a minor accident while planting the seed – dropping the packet so coverage of the border is patchy and the plants have grown much taller than I expected. Hopefully the permanent planting will take place this November when the phacelia will be chopped down and incorporated into the soil or composted. The Bloom Group have no responsibility for the plans for planting the wall. This is being organised by the 3P’s group. From what I believe the plans for next year will be for bedding – if they can acquire a grant – and for a small section to be trialled with permanent planting to see if that is an option for the future. The Bloom Group feel that permanent planting is the way forward as bedding is not cost effective needing replacing each year. Also permanent planting would be better for the environment and for wildlife. Jan Tomlinson
Dear Editor, At a Bay Villa Trust meeting (Thomas Oliver Bequest) held following the Town Council meeting on the 12th October, a simplified grant application was approved. Grants were awarded to the Friends of Grange School for library equipment and to the 3Ps Group for plants for the Ornamental Gardens. Ron Shapland. Dear Editor I must write and thank the people of Grange who have supported me in my efforts to raise awareness about Rett Syndrome, and funds for research into alleviating, and hopefully, eventually reversing this rare genetic condition. Firstly thank you to ‘Grange Now’ who printed my article about my granddaughter Molly, who has Rett syndrome. Thank you too to Victor Hindle who, along with Sue Harrison, ably accompanied by her mother, Sylvia Trohear, gave a wonderful, moving concert in the United Reform Church. This was also Victor's 75th birthday, and we all shared his lovely cake! A magnificent £350 was donated which was shared between the NSPCC and Reverse Rett. The following weekend was our Cross Bay Walk. This was the last in the season and the best, according to Cedric Robinson.
130 supporters gathered in the shade on the promenade in Arnside. Family and friends from near and far, along with a group of supporters from the U3A, and parents and children from Grange Primary School, set out along the shoreside path out into the glorious sunshine at White Creek. 3 1/2 hours later these intrepid explorers emerged along the narrow path at Kents Bank station, where they were met by Molly and Bethany, another girl from Kendal who also has Rett syndrome. Thank you to everyone who participated in the walk, to those who sponsored them, to the many people who gave so generously on the “just giving” page and to the many who continue to give me cheques and notes. The final total for this event will probably exceed £5,000! My family join me in thanking you all for your support and generosity. Lis Christopher
Dear Editor, As someone born in Grange in 1936, I am horrified that the building of 69 houses is going ahead on Tricketts field in spite of all the objections which have been a complete waste of time. I wonder if any of the planning committee who passed these plans have actually tried to drive out of Methven Road or Thornfield Road (adjoining the field) onto
Kents Bank Road where there are 2 blind corners. It is a nightmare and an accident waiting to happen. All these new houses will have at least one car as will the new houses at Berners. I enclose a photo of the lovely Tricketts Field which is frequented by many small animals and birds. How sad that this gorgeous view of the Bay will be lost forever. Valerie A Jones Grange
LEGAL TALK With
Joanne Armer Solicitor
MEET YOUR NEW LOCAL SOLICITOR Now full time at our Grange Office This week we are delighted to introduce you to our new full time Grange solicitor, Joanne Armer. Joanne joined us in 2010 after studying law at Nottingham Trent University. Joanne worked as a trainee solicitor at our Milnthorpe office and is now a qualified solicitor. She will now be taking up a position as a full time solicitor at our Grange office. Why not pop in a say hello? Now onto this weeks Law Talk… For my first Law Talk I wanted to touch on balancing acts; and the most common one that we need to address is the marriage with children from previous relationships. Sometimes the new spouse or partner can be pretty unpopular with the children of the first marriage, especially if they were involved in the breaking up of the parents; there can be a fair amount of understandable ill feeling. How do we then balance the interests of the new spouse and existing children and sometimes the new children of the new relationship? A common way is to make a Will, which leaves the new spouse a life interest allowing them to live in the house and to have income from investments so that their standard of living is not reduced but for the capital in the trust to be ring fenced to go to the children after the surviving spouse’s death. That sounds fair enough but it could leave the children waiting a long time if a new spouse is younger than their parent. It can be uncomfortable for everybody. Arguments can bubble up and destroy family relationships. Another way is to go for a clean break situation by using life policies, written in trust for the children so that the estate can go entirely to the new spouse and their children, with no strings attached, with the life policy ‘buying out’ the interests of the children so that they can go and get on with their lives with their ‘inheritance’ coming immediately from the life policy. If new spouse decides to leave them some money on their later death, that is up to them and if money has not been a burning issue between them souring relationships, it may be something they are more prepared to do. It is always a balancing act and everyone is different. What you need first is a free appointment with an expert.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP
Allithwaite & Cartmel WI
On Tuesday Oct 6th, the monthly meeting was well attended with many products on sale on the trading table. Our speakers.Lee and Bernadette Kitchingman delivered an absolutely wonderful presentation on Svalbard. It was a clever mix of film, stills and music containing fantastic images of wildlife, stunning scenery and included historical aspects and with geographical references. It was an interesting and entertaining afternoon. The competition,’The Frozen North’ was won by Ann Anderson who entered a collage of 'frozen' images. During the meeting members were asked to consider joining the committee as two members had resigned due to personal reasons. The response seemed to be positive as several nomination forms have been submitted. Our next meeting on Tuesday 3rd November will be the AGM, and the annual meal provided by the committee. The motto for 2016 will be decided upon and the new committee formed. The entertainment group will provide the entertainment after the meal. All new members welcome. Contact 33696.
St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group

On this occasion we were taken on a journey to Svalbard, the archipelago lying 300 miles south of the North Pole. The presenter, Lee Kitchingham, showed us a dramatic colour film of the Northern Lights and introduced us to a wide variety of wild life existing there: Artic Fox, Blue Whale, Snow Bunting, Barnacle Geese. Our November programme starts on the 3rd with Glaciers, Bears and Dinosaurs with Ken Taylor. On the 10th,
Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. we learn about the Leeds Children’s Activity Centre at Silverdale by Edith Farrar and Freda Addison. Come and join us - you will be made most welcome. Ring Alan Anderson on 015395 33696.
Grange Lions Once again the club has been out and about on several social outings. In late September we were invited to a join our friends in Grange Rotary for a quiz. In a close contest the Lions prevailed, and took the trophy. However the gauntlet was thrown down with a challenge to overturn the result next year. A group of members were guests at the Magna Carta celebrations in Cartmel. This was a splendid event and thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. On the 1st October we organised a member’s trip to a Charity VOCE' concert at the Forum in Barrow. A packed house was treated to a wonderful night’s entertainment whilst raising much needed funds for Furness General, Children's Ward. Recent donations include £250. To the “Blind Veterans Association”. £50.To the “Keep our Girls Safe” appeal and £100 to the “Syrian Refugee Appeal”. The Club received a lovely letter from a young man we have supported over the years whilst he has represented Great Britain at Baseball. Since being a youngster Luke Armstrong has shown promise as an up and coming baseball player. Representing his country at different levels has allowed Luke to visit other countries to play in tournaments. The cost of this has to be met by Luke himself, and Grange Lions have been delighted to support him where possible. Keep an eye out in the next issue of Grange Now, when we will outline Santa's sleigh dates and routes for December.
Grange WI At our last meeting Amanda Hunter led a Silversmithing Workshop for members. We started the session with a quiz which gave us lots of interesting facts about silver - how it is made, the hallmarking system and some myths and legends about silversmiths. We then had the chance to make our own pendant or ring and use the various tools to shape and burnish our jewellery. At our November meeting members will be making festive decorations for the Xmas Tree festival in St Paul’s Church. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available along with lots of other tasty food. New members are welcome.
Grange Soroptimists Club members had a very enjoyable, productive and sociable pottery workshop with Phil Lubelski in September. The fired results of our efforts are eagerly awaited. Singing for the Brain continues at Allithwaite Community Centre on a Thursday morning and is proving popular with local people with dementia. Club members run the sessions under the auspices of the Alzheimer’s Society. New attendees are welcome but please contact the Alzheimer’s Society in Kendal for information on sessions. The club celebrated 61 years of service with their Charter tea at the Hampsfell house Hotel on October 17th. Work by club members continues on the library and sensory gardens. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on our work and events see our website www.sigbi. org/grange-over-sands/

Grange and District U3A
We hold a meeting every month in the Victoria Hall, Grange with an invited speaker presenting a topic of general interest followed by tea/ coffee and a chance to socialise, but the main activities of the U3A take place in the interest groups. These are co-ordinated by the members and are held in a variety of locations throughout the district some on a weekly basis, others less frequently. They provide an opportunity to make friends, to learn new skills and to share knowledge and expertise. Currently there are 35 interest groups ranging from the active (snooker, walking, badminton, gardening and table tennis) to the cerebral and skillbased (languages, crafts, general history, music , writing and bridge) and social (lunch club, local explorers and countdown). As new members join the U3A so new interest groups are developed – railway enthusiasts and country dancing will shortly follow Cinema Buffs as new groups. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk

After the success of the September Fashion Show, our October meeting was very poorly attended (only 7 present). Those who did turn up had a most interesting talk supported by some truly beautiful slides, given by David Mower from Leighton Moss. The small group allowed David to happily respond to questions as we went along, which made our evening more intimate and rewarding. Next meeting is the A.G.M. in Holker Village Hall on 4th November at 1:30pm (Winter Time) Next open meeting is Wednesday 2nd December at Flookburgh Village Hall. "The Art of Origami" by Stephen Watson. Visitors welcome: £3 including refreshments. Grange over Sands NSPCC
On Saturday, 12th September, the supporters of the NSPCC and the Rett Syndrome Charity spent a pleasurable and emotional afternoon being entertained by Victor Hindle, baritone, Sue Harrison, soprano, and Sylvia Trohear, pianist, with a concert in aid of both the NSPCC and the Rett Syndrome Charity in the United Reformed Church. It was very touching and an added bonus when Lis Christopher introduced her young granddaughter, Molly, who has Retts. Both worthwhile charities would like to thank everyone who helped to make this such a successful event. The sum of £350 was raised and will be shared equally. We should also like to thank an anonymous donor for the amount of £100 to the NSPCC which we appreciate greatly. Our annual Christmas Coffee morning will be on SATURDAY, November 21st from 10 am to 12 noon in the United Reformed Church Hall when we look forward to meeting the NSPCC's supporters and friends.
North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild
The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their A.G.M. on Tuesday 13th of October. After a successful A.G.M. a branch meeting was held when two further embroidery stitches were explored in our occasional stitch tutorials. Some members who had missed a previous free machine embroidery class were able to have a catch-up session. The group were delighted with the positive feedback they had from the Embroidery Exhibition that they held in September in the Methodist Church Hall in Grange. There had been a steady flow of visitors, all of whom showed great interest in the varied techniques on display. All in all it was felt that the Exhibition had been a success. Next month Joana Henson will be teaching us the intricacies of Dorset Buttons. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month and new members are most welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Joana Henson tel- 01229-861800.

Mrs. Caroline Blee chaired the meeting of fourteen members and one guest before a talk by author Jackie Huck. 'Poetry and Stories' was an amusing and poignant cross section of Jackie Huck's work with extracts from her novel 'Salt and Pepper into the Cruet' which is based on her experiences as
a sixteen year old Care Cadet at Ashtonunder-Lyne Hospital. Poems from 'Cats like me', with illustrations by Pauline Henderson, and a forthcoming book.
Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies Section) Club competitions have now finished, probably some of the best weather we’ve had all season! The Daily Mail Foursomes Qualifier was won by Christine Bold and Lesley Wilson. The Fell Cup final (for season’s medal winners) gave Ellie Woodburn the victory. We enjoyed Lady Captain’s day out at Kendal Golf Club, which had been postponed from earlier in the season due to bad weather. Pam Chamberlain and Jill Atkinson were the winners. Finally, the Betty Hamer Par competition was won by Lesley Wilson.
Grange Lecture Society In ‘Poems from the Front Line’, the first of the new season’s lectures given on 13th October, David Hunt presented a selection of poems reflecting the tragedy of the First World War. His wide-ranging choice, representing the work of a number of different authors both famous and lesser known, traced the poetry’s changing mood from the early enthusiasm of Rupert Brooke, through an awakening of realism in the work of Charles Hamilton Sorley (much underestimated in the view of the speaker), to the later bitter disillusion of Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. As has come to be expected from David, the poems were beautifully read and commented upon with insight. On 10th November Professor Jeremy Clegg of Leeds University will talk about ‘The Changing Face of China – what it means for us’, and on 24th November historian Peter Warwick, who chaired the International Committee for Waterloo 200 set up to celebrate the bicentenary of the battle of Waterloo in June of this year, will give the John Kirkman Memorial Lecture entitled ‘The Art of Waterloo’. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.
Cartmel Art Society In September, award winning artist Tracy Levine was our tutor for the first workshop of the season. She guided us in the use of acrylics and mixed media to create a landscape painting. We experimented with charcoal and graphite, and then were taken through the process of building up layers using pastels and crayon, and finally adding acrylic and inks. This was an exciting way of experimentation. ‘Inspiration from Seed Pods’ was the theme for our monthly afternoon session, when members brought in hedge clippings and seed heads to draw and paint. Our October workshop was led by well known artist, Jackie Hadwin. She demonstrated, in watercolour, how to paint a winter stag using a limited palette, some new materials and a variety of techniques. It was a fun day, with each attending member creating their own stag painting, with surprising results.
Arnside & Arnside Knott W.I. Arnside and Arnside Knott WI welcomed Mary and Morag of HMP. Haverigg and heard of the success of the Smokery. Samples of the tasty products were enjoyed. Eight members went to Silverdale to see the production "Raising Agents" by Mikron Theatre, an enjoyable and amusing account of the W.I.'s 100 years On Sunday 29th. November The Arnside Ladies Choir will give a concert in the W.I. Hall at 2pm. The next meeting, the Annual Meeting will be on Monday 9th. November.
Grange Ramblers Thursday September 24th. Five ramblers set off from Grasmere to ascend Tarn Crag. Following a delightful walk along Easdale and up alongside the Sourmilk Gill waterfalls, the route then continued upwards to Codale Tarn before ascending Tarn Crag. Sunshine and short showers produced some stunning rainbows. After lunch we descended to Far Easdale then back to Grasmere. Thursday October 8th, five ramblers walked from New Dungeon Gill car park for a circular route around Lingmoor Fell through Little/ Great Langdale. Several members helped in the Magna Carta Flower Pageant in cartmel priory. Some were involved in the flower arrangements in their own right as flower arrangers while others, inspired by fellow member, Joan bentley, happily copied samples she had made to produce similar arrangements. Several stewarded in the Priory. On Friday a team worked hard to provide refreshments for visitors in the village hall. Soups, rolls, scones and cakes
Cartmel Art Society
On Monday 19th October, Cartmel and District Flower Club welcomed Sylvia Bower-Stockport, the title of her demonstration being "All That Jazz". For her first arrangement the container used was a lamp shade, picked up on a quick trip to the supermarket using orange lilies, cotoneaster and sunflowers from her garden a very bright design. Sylvia explained the wrought iron containers had been made by her son, one with four circular arms arranged with orange and red gerbera static and ivy looking like suspended hanging baskets a colourful display. Next, she made a hand tied bunch with Bells of Ireland, green hydrangea surrounded by steel grass then placed into tall tubes covered with grey wool a very dramatic design. For the final arrangement, Sylvia used a wreath frame covered with ivy stems placed on a large pot and using hydrangea, veronica, amaranthus and a beautiful pink edged rose. Sylvia entertained us with stores of her working life and her forthcoming holiday arrangements. Our next meeting on Monday 16th November in Cartmel Village Hall will be the AGM and Jacob's Join at 1pm.
Grange Rotary
The Club lost one of its longest serving members recently, when Past President Tom Blakemore, passed away. He served the club well for many years, as well as serving on the District International Committee. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, given to members who have made a significant contribution to Rotary. He will be sadly missed. A group of Rotarians with partners and friends is due to visit Heron Theatre soon, after enjoying a meal at a local inn. The quiz night with Lions went well, with good fellowship, but sadly the Lions won once again. We have to wait until next year to see if we can win back the cup which we played for this time. And finally, a presentation was made to Rotarian Chris Fallowfield, and Rotary Friend Mike Fallowfield at one of our Wednesday luncheons. They were thanked for their wonderful support to Rotary during their time as owners of the Netherwood Hotel. We are lucky that the new owners are happy to continue to look after us.
