Neighbourhood Plan - Your feedback
Editor Letter
A big thank you to everyone who braved the rain and wind to visit the display at the Victoria Hall to give their feedback.
Here we are at the start of another year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers, advertisers and contributors for your continued support. In this issue we talk to 102 year old, Carrie Nelson, who talks of a time when people were less sympathetic and kind. The telephones have caused widespread disruption and expense but BT Openreach won't commit to paying compensation. A date for your diary - the consultation for the proposed new development on land adjoining Kent's Bank will take place on 19th January 2016. Despite the wind, rain and Storm Desmond you were undeterred and the Victoria Hall Christmas Fair, Grange Extravaganza and the Scout coffee morning were all well attended. Well done one and all. A bit of news from the 'Now' team is the launch of Ulverston Now - more details below. We look forward to delivering your news throughout the year. Happy New Year from the team
A spokesperson for the group said: "We will be looking at all your comments and sticky dots and will report back in the New Year. If you missed the display, you can still fill in the feedback form on grangeoversandstowncouncil.gov.uk.
Just click on Neighbourhood Plan on the Home page. To send us your views, email your responses to our questions to contactus@grangeoversands.net. Or download the form, print it off, fill it in, and drop it off at the Victoria Hall Information Centre. For those who

Grange now | JANUARY 2016 - Next deadline 15th JANUARY
BT Openreach pass the buck
Many of you will have been affected by the loss of phone service during November/December. Grange Now, along with many businesses in the town, had no phone service at all for 2 weeks and then our phones were transferred to a lady in Grange which caused some distress. Local hotels, florists, opticians etc have been in touch with us to say the business they have lost is ‘unquantifiable’. New business owners Carol Philpott from the Flower Stop and Lisa Critchley of Lakeland Opticians, both on Main Street, Grange, have been badly affected by the problems. Carol told Grange Now: “One of the most irritating things has been the fact that people are getting the engaged tone when they ring, they get annoyed that they can’t get through and go somewhere else. The problem is you may have then lost that customer altogether.” Lisa from Lakeland Opticians has had an even worse time of it as she has had no phone, no internet connection, no card payment machine and no mobile reception. She told us: “It’s been awful. We can’t contact anyone and they can’t contact us. People have come in to collect glasses only to find out they can’t pay by card so they have to come back. I have been going home to order things over the phone there but I live in Lancaster!”. For those who don’t know, Lancaster became a ghost town when storm Desmond brought down power cables over the weekend of 5th/6th December. Lisa, who has just had her first baby, has now de-camped the family to Grange. Peter Baker, from Woodlands Hotel and Pine Lodges, got in touch to say his business had been without a phone line, internet connection and card payment machine for well over a week. He said: “How can businesses run without internet/ phone? How many potential Christmas and New Year bookings have we lost?”.
Grange Now contacted BT Openreach for answers as to why the phones were off for so long and in respect of compensation… FROM: Emma@BT Openreach TO: Sharon@Grange Now With respect to compensation, anyone affected will need to contact their service provider (ie the company they pay their bill to) once their service has been restored, to see what they are entitled to (according to the terms of their contract, etc). Regards, Emma
FROM: Sharon@Grange Now TO: Emma@BT Openreach Hi Emma. Thanks for the update. Nevertheless, you say in your last email that compensation should come from the respective 'service providers', but we fail to see how they can provide a 'service' without the necessary cables to do so. Surely, Openreach are responsible for paying compensation because,as you state in your email it is your' underground cable is faulty'. Our service provider has said they won't charge us a service charge for the days that we didn't have any service. There are many businesses, hotels and service providers who have been affected by this problem. The loss of business suffered because of this is huge and the full extent will never be known. We have had a number of angry emails claiming our line is constantly engaged and don't we want their business. People will get fed up with the 'engaged' tone and simply go elsewhere. The other side of the coin is the safety aspect. Over 68% of our residents are elderly, many of whom do not own a mobile phone. If they fall, or take ill how can they contact a doctor or the emergency services. We certainly hope that hasn't happened, but as yet, that remains to be seen. Someone needs to do the right thing and put up their hand and take responsibility for this. I look forward to hearing from you.
FROM: Emma@BT Openreach TO: Sharon@Grange Now Hi Sharon, I would stress again how sorry we are about this service issue. It is regrettable when part of the network goes faulty and every effort is made to avoid this happening. It’s quite a complex repair, but engineers are working hard to restore services as quickly as possible. The service providers are the customers of Openreach, so that would be a matter for them. Then, as you have indicated from your own experience, it’s up to the individual service providers to discuss with their own customers any compensation or goodwill. Regards, Emma

Carrie Nelson, Loved to feed the brewery horses
Grange Now had the great pleasure of meeting one of our oldest residents, Carrie Nelson, who now lives in Bridge House, Flookburgh. Carrie has reached the incredible age of 102. Born in 1913 in Kirksanton, near Millom, Carrie spoke of ‘hard times’ as a child. She told Grange Now: “I walked to school from the age of 5, with my uncooked lunch in a leather bag, which someone had
very kindly given me.” She said when the children went out to play the lunches would be put into a big stove to be cooked ready for lunchtime. She also said that the walk to school, which was very long, became more bearable when she was given a mackintosh to keep off the rain. Surprisingly, Carrie said such kindnesses were rare in those days, “people didn’t have the same sympathy back then. They weren’t
as kind and caring as they are today. They didn’t have the same sense of community that we have now”. She said her father worked for one of the breweries and she told me about going to visit the big horses in the stable and how one of the men her dad worked with would always give her half of his lunch. Carrie’s mother worked in the ‘big houses’. Carrie said: “she worked very hard and she brought us up on her own after my father left”. Carrie is a great-great-grandmother and staff at Bridge House told us that her great-great-grandson comes to visit her, with a bunch of flowers, every week. Carrie had nothing but praise for the staff at Bridge House, saying they are lovely and that they look after her really well. She told me: “They work so hard but they’re always happy. They bath me and dress and bring me tea. I don’t eat much but I drink mountains of tea!”, she said with a giggle. Carrie’s only complaint is that she feels the cold. Not really surprising at 102.

District Councillor, Mary Wilson, announced at the Grange Town Council meeting on Monday 15th December, that South Lakeland District Council has managed to secure £50,000 worth of funding for the lido. The money has come from the Coastal Revival Fund and the Lido is one of 77 projects which will benefit from a £3 million pound pot. In his resignation letter (Grange Now October) former Council Leader, Bill Woods said: “A report will be submitted very soon by SLDC officers for approval detailing the proposals for the Lido. Their current thinking is to refurbish the structure

of the building, fill the pool area in (subject to listed building consent) and install an artwork piece. Although SLDC will continue to maintain the building they consider it is better managed in Grange by Grange to further develop over time. The big question is, should Grange “manage” it, if so by who (will manage it) and will future funds be available? Should Grange consider asking SLDC now to incorporate in their plan to relocate the children’s play area to the Lido pool area, incorporating the latest play equipment (plus a large sand pit) which can be seen at other
playgrounds in the area? This will at least give the Lido a purpose, bring it to life, cater for all ages, is sustainable and fundable now. Future funding may not be available in a few years time.” Is now the time to act?

Snow Patrol in Cumbria
Could you be a snow champion?
Cumbria County Council has 24,000 tonnes of salt stockpiled and a 33-strong fleet of gritters ready to roll to keep our roads clear this winter.
The council will be using a budget of nearly £3.7 million to routinely treat around 2,400km (approx 1,490 miles) of highway, covering around one-third of the county’s whole road network – the equivalent of driving from Penrith to Barcelona. The council continues to work in partnership with a number of community groups in Cumbria to enable local minor roads to be treated and ploughed as necessary. The
council can also call on the help of more than 150 volunteers, known as Snow Champions, who keep local footways and footpaths clear of snow. Anyone interested in becoming a Snow Champion can call 0845 609 6609. Members of the public can keep track of the council’s daily gritting plans for the road network this winter via the council’s website at www.cumbria.gov. uk/gritting and through their dedicated Twitter account, @CumbriaGritters A full list of the Priority 1 and 2 routes is available on the council’s website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/gritting

Grange dentist. David Tomison, got in touch with Grange Now on his return from Peru. In our November issue we reported on David’s upcoming trip to carry out dentistry on the Amazon Hope 2. David would like to thank everyone for their generosity:
“£1012.60 was donated directly to me through the dental practice and further donations have been given directly to the Vine Trust and I am very grateful to all those who donated.” David went on: “After arriving in Iquitos on the Tuesday our team of two doctors and two dentists met up and visited a Street boys home in a nearby village where we were shown around the complex and met fifteen boys (age 7 to 11) and their leaders. They were very welcoming and we took them some fizzy pop and sweets and gave the leaders some money to buy them some presents for Christmas. Also, I went shopping and bought 400 toothbrushes and toothpastes to
hand out on the boat, with some of the money given by donations in Grange.” Unfortunately, the trip then took a tragic turn when the taxi taking them to catch a fast boat to the Amazon Hope 2, which was working on the Marañon River, hit another taxi causing two fatalities in the other car. The two doctors in David’s taxi, who were themselves injured, proceeded to treat other casualties for an hour before any emergency vehicles arrived.” Sadly, the party were in no condition to carry on with their trip, and following medical treatment in Lima, all are now back at home recovering. David went on: “On this occasion I left the dental materials I had taken with me to be used on future trips which will start again in January 2016. I gave the toothbrushes/toothpaste to a group of leaders who are running a Christmas fiesta for some of the poorer villages and they will handed out then. The rest of the money I have given to the Vine Trust to use on future trips.
Ebony McMahon-Ridding (9), a pupil at Flookburgh Primary came a very creditable second in MP Tim Farron’s Christmas Card competition. When we met Ebony she was looking forward to Christmas and she told us: “I’m really pleased. I enjoyed making the card”. Mr Farron said of the designs: “My thanks and congratulations also go to all the students who entered the competition. It was very difficult to choose because each year there are more entries to the competition and the standard just keeps going up."

Triathlon X
The toughest triathlon of the lot is coming to Ambleside next year, with Windermere the stage for the first leg of a challenge that will test the mettle (or metal) of every ironman and ironwoman competing. Triathlon X, which was staged in Wasdale this year, will be held on Saturday 25 June, with the swimming leg starting at 4.30am... Organisers have allocated 20 hours of daylight for the race (and even then they have told competitors they need to take a head torch!). In their race description, they issue some stark messages to those taking part: “Be warned! This is the hardest bike section of any ultra distance triathlon anywhere. Before entering the race it is essential that you read this document and understand the difficult and extreme nature of the event. There are mandatory cut off times that must be met. No exceptions will be made.” Entries are now open www.wasdalex.co.uk
The Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge held a very special dinner at the Grange Hotel, to celebrate the phenomenal achievement of raising over One Million Pounds. The celebration was a day-long affair and included a cycle ride around Arnside and Silverdale. The main guest for the evening was Ian Stannard, Tour De France rider with Team Sky, who presented a cheque for £125,000 to Sue MacDonald of Macmillan Cancer Support. Cheques were also presented to The Great North Air Ambulance, North West Air Ambulance and Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue who each received £20,000. Also in attendance at the dinner was Fred’s widow, Lynne, who now lives in Allithwaite. She told Grange Now: “since the challenges began, when it raised small amounts of money, it has gone from strength to strength over the years and now raises thousands of pound for good causes, every year, culminating in one million this year.” Paul Loftus the organiser, along with the Lakes Road Club and friends for the last 16 years says

the 112 mile ride has become an established major Cumbrian event, and has proved to be the forerunner of many other similar rides in the Country. Paul said: “It has surpassed all our wildest dreams, starting off with 66 riders in 1999 we now have to limit the ride to 2,500.” Paul Loftus is now handing over the organisation to Stuart Emms who aim will be to continue with
this now iconic event and raise yet more money for our special charities. Paul would like to thank all the sponsors and people from Cumbria and beyond who have helped make this event the success it is. Lynne said: “I am confident that the management team and Lakes Road Club will continue to better the event year on year.”

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP
New Year is always a good time to take stock of what has happened in the previous 12 months and the key elements going forward. Although the longer term trend for stock markets is upwards we saw a good deal of volatility during 2015. Many factors were responsible including the slowdown in the growth of the Chinese economy (albeit it is still growing strongly), the VW emissions scandal, uncertainty of timings for interest rate rises etc. If you had a maturity date for a stock market linked investment the volatility could have been bad news but failing that markets continued to provide good dividend income and continued to represent attractive medium term investment opportunities. Interest rates remained sadly rooted at ultra-low levels. It now seems likely that rates will rise during the second half of this year (although we have heard that phrase in previous years!). Three key areas apply when review your own investment or pension portfolio. Your adviser should be doing this for you on a regular basis and if not you should be doing this yourself.
Minimising “tax drag” means constantly striving to improve the tax efficiency of your portfolio to reduce the amount of your return that is lost in tax. The cumulative effect of tax free or tax efficient returns can be vast over the years.
Asset allocation means ensuring that your funds are correctly exposed to the different asset classes in accordance with your risk profile. Commonly we see non clients hold a portfolio spread across a range of different funds but if all of those funds are invested in the same area then the portfolio will not be balanced or diverse. Performance is critical and consistency of performance equally important. The majority of investment methods allow funds to be changed at nil or minimal cost and whilst we do not promote regular changes of funds by any means the difference between consistently good performers and consistently poor performers can be vast.
A combination of the above in relation to your portfolio on a cumulative basis can have a significant impact on the ultimate value. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Tim’s column I hope you had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a happy 2016. Sadly a lot of people I saw in the run up to Christmas were facing the fact that Christmas was going to be spent in temporary housing whilst their homes were being dried out and repaired after the floods caused by storm Desmond. It will be months before many people can even think of returning to anything like normality and for some things will never be quite the same. For this to happen just a couple of weeks before Christmas was just tragic. Grange has always been great at supporting local businesses and I know that the publishers of Grange Now are doing what they can to help throughout the area. Now more than ever they need this support. Lots of holiday businesses have told me about bookings being cancelled as a result of the coverage of the floods and concerns that roads may not be

passable. We really must ensure we do all we can to make people aware that we are open for business and ensure that as much of the money that we spend personally at this time stays within our area. It is vital for our economy that we do not see the hit to our incomes we have seen in the past when visitors were put off such as the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001. In the meantime I have been doing all I can to help the people and businesses affected by the floods and have been pressing Ministers to ensure they deliver on their promises to provide us with the funds we need to start to sort things out. In the immediate aftermath of the floods there was much talk of finding money but not a lot of sign of it appearing. I hope that this has changed by the time Grange Now is published and will keep up the pressure to make sure that it does. On a more positive note, since my last column in Grange Now the Government has backed down on plans to cut funding for police

forces but we still face the threat of Cumbria in particular being hit by a new funding formula. I am working to ensure that the Ministers are aware that rural areas are need more money spent per head simply because of the greater distances involved. If you haven’t signed my petition please do, just search on “Tim Farron Police Petition” and it will come up. There has also been positive news on the rail franchises for our area. The Government has announced that, as part of the new franchise arrangements, the number of trains on the Furness Line going all the way to and from Manchester Airport will double to eight each way. This is great news, not least because it will help all of our tourist businesses. Local musician organises flood fundraiser
PIG & WHISTLE Evie Plumb and band performing at the Flood fundraiser
Singer/songwriter, Evie Plumb was joined by several local musicians on Thursday 10th December, to put on a fundraiser for the flood relief efforts.
Kev Kendal, Sean Moore, Jon Dawes, Mike Braithwaite, The Evie Plumb Band and Amy-Jo Clough all performed at Bootleggers, and despite the weather, and thanks to great support, they managed to raise over £250 with some donations still coming in!
Thanks to Chris Edgar at Bootleggers for coordinating and offering the venue, to all the musicians, and to everyone that came out, donated and bought raffle tickets! Following the gig, three of the area’s best-known musicians launched a ‘Help The North’ project, to raise funds for those affected. Jamie Walker and Luke Paget (from The Feud) and James Morrison have
recorded a charity Christmas single and people from the local area were invited to be on the recording. On Wednesday 16th December, they invited members of the community to go to Lancaster’s Grand Theatre to get involved and be on the track. Evie has also been involved in the recording along with Amy Jo Clough, Molly Warburton, and Scool Trip - all of whom will be adding their talents to an original Christmas song titled ‘It Won’t Be Long ‘Till Christmas’. The single will be released on iTunes on the 18th December. Digital download of the track will cost 99p and profits of the sales will be going towards The Community Foundation for Lancashire flood appeal, and the Cumbria’s Community Foundation’s flood appeal. èèFor further information email helpthenorth2015@hotmail.com

Barbara Leader with some of her pack
Thank you to everyone who braved the wet and windy conditions at the end of November to support the Scout Group’s Christmas Coffee Morning. This year they raised over £800 which will be used to support Group activities during 2016. Some of the money raised will be used to help the Cub section celebrate the centenary of Cub Scouting in 2016. As the morning came to an end; Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers gathered to say thank you to Barbara Leader. Barbara handed over the role of Group Scout Leader (GSL) to David Farnsworth in September. Although Barbara continues to work with the Group and will assist David in his new role, the Group was determined to acknowledge her very significant contribution to Scouting in general and in particular to the 1st Grange & Cartmel Group.
Barbara originally joined the Group as an Assistant Cub Scout Master a few years ago when she was 18. Although her career took her away from Grange, she continued Scouting, holding a variety of roles in Germany, London and Cambridgeshire before returning to this area in 2004 and renewing her links with the Group. A year later Barbara accepted the role of GSL. In the following ten years she helped to transform the Group which is now one of the largest in Cumbria with over 120 members. With the help and support of husband Tim, Barbara has also led a project to completely refurbish the Scout Base in Cartmel. Explorer Scout, Issy Wattam and Beaver Scout, Oliver Pearson presented Barbara with a beautiful engraved jug as a token of appreciation for her ten years as GSL.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS Many of us start the New Year with plans for a healthy new lifestyle. After a Christmas filled with food and fun, the inner voice calls us to behave and redress the balance.
M
aking plans for a healthier lifestyle is multi faceted. We have many exercise options - from cycling to swimming, walking or even gentle activities at home. Less obvious aspects of good health include eating well, fresh air and creating a bit of ‘me’ time. Perhaps a relaxing massage once a month or a brisk walk down Grange promenade. You might consider yoga classes, the local dance school or even joining a gym. Right on our doorstep we have the mountains, lakes and seashore which present many opportunities for fun activities in the outdoors. If you really feel the urge to burn those calories just get on a bike and cycle up Bigland Hill.
It doesn’t have to be so severe though. How about asking a friend to join you or just plug in your favourite music to spur you on? Try some healthier choices next time you’re in the supermarket, breathe deeply every morning, put a smile on your face and you’re on your way. One thing is certain: providing you are medically able and don’t overdo it, a healthy lifestyle has many benefits.
Of course some aspects of our health and vitality are governed by our genes and how our mother behaves during pregnancy, but many lifestyle factors - including
fitness, diet and weight - all impact on our ability to live a long and healthy life. The pressures of home and family life can make it feel like there's little time to exercise. But aside from weight loss, there is a lot to gain from exercise and it can make a huge difference to staying healthy: So if the will power starts to wane, remember: Exercise means a healthier heart because it reduces several cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. Being physically active can bolster good mental health and help you manage stress, anxiety and even depression. Regular exercise can help you achieve and maintain an ideal weight and reduce the risk of diabetes. Good luck with the healthy new you and we wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Charities grateful for cheques On Tuesday 15th December, Cartmel & District Flower Club held their presentation evening in Victoria Hall.
HARVEST BY CANDLELIGHT
Their evening began with the presentation of cheques to representatives from North West Air Ambulance, Mr Brian Pearson. The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity (Kendal), Miss Tuver Leech, and Cartmel Village Hall Mr David Huggett, all thanked the Club for the cheques, and for the support from the public the fashion show events and said the monies raised would be put to very good use by the charities involved. We were also delighted to welcome NAFAS North West Area 2nd Vice Chairman Ross Harrison also members and friends from other clubs.
Yorkshire forced rhubarb is arriving in the Low Sizergh Farm shop and it is a bit of a seasonal contradiction; harvested in January but out-of-season when compared to its outdoor counterparts. Famously picked by candlelight, it is known worldwide for its delicate flavour and striking crimson stalks. Rhubarb, orange and hazelnut cake is just the thing to deliver cheer to a winter tea plate. Put on an apron and relish those pink dotty splatters as you gently strip the stalks.
Ingredients 250g prepared rhubarb, cut into 4cm lengths 350g golden caster sugar finely grated zest and juice of 1 large orange 200g skinned hazelnuts 150g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 300g Carron Lodge, unsalted butter, softened 4 medium Low Sizergh Farm free-range eggs FOR THE TOPPING 50g Carron Lodge butter 50g light muscovado sugar ½ tsp ground ginger 100g skinned hazelnuts, roughly chopped
Their next meeting will be on 15th February 2016 in Cartmel Village Hall at 2pm. New members very welcome.
Top Lake District hotel helps inspire budding chefs The kitchen team from the 2AA rosette-rated Lakeside Hotel & Spa took over Furness College restaurant on Thursday 26 November, to give aspiring chefs a special insight into what it takes to run a top-notch eaterie.
Method 1. Mix the rhubarb with 50g of the caster sugar and half of the orange zest. Cover and set aside for 20 minutes. Grease a 20 x 25cm shallow cake tin and line with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. 2. Put the hazelnuts into a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Add the flour and baking powder and whiz together until very finely ground. 3. Cream the butter, remaining sugar and orange zest together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then fold in the hazelnut and flour mixture and 4 tablespoons of the orange juice. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and level the surface, then spoon the rhubarb pieces evenly over the top. Bake for 25 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, for the topping, melt the butter in a small pan, then stir in the sugar, ground ginger and hazelnuts and mix together well. 5. Remove the part-cooked cake from the oven and scatter the topping evenly over the top. Return the cake to the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/gas 4 and bake for a further 20 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes away clean. Leave to cool in the tin, then remove and serve cut into squares.
A new partnership between Furness College and Lakeside Hotel & Spa, it is part of the work the hotel’s Head Chef, Richard Booth, is doing with the local community to inspire the next generation of chefs.
Along with three of his talented team, Richard was on hand for a fully-booked night in the college’s restaurant to support their NVQ Level 2 students in Food, Beverage and Professional Cookery. The very talented Catherine Gledhill gave a very amusing demonstration entitled, ‘Christmas Greetings’. She entertained the crowd with the most beautiful arrangements using exquisite flowers including orchids, anthurium, roses, tulips, chincherinchee, and amaryllis with stories of her time many years ago running her shop in Huddersfield with the help, or hindrance of, her delivery man father! Tales of many demonstrations had the audience laughing throughout, with everyone commenting that it was the most entertaining demonstration they had been to.

Milk bottle tops are put to good use In May of this year, we printed an article about Froebelian teacher, Sara Holroyd, who asked our readers to collect the coloured tops from plastic milk bottles, as these are used in schools in Calcutta to teach the children. Sara was delighted with the response and she sent this report via Penny Ward: “Thank you so much for the large collection of bottle tops, my suitcase was bursting when I returned in October. We had a very successful trip to visit our Parivar partner schools based at police stations in Kolkata. The teachers, most untrained, are beginning to understand and acknowledge the principles behind our training in Froebelian approaches. They are beginning to develop their own ideas for story, song and
resources which allow the children to explore and create with open ended activities. We have been demonstrating how such resources can be used to support learning in all curriculum areas and with children of all ages following Froebelian principles. We are now focusing on the sustainability of the project and will be helping them source cheap and free materials in Kolkata so no more heavy suitcases for us”.
Grange Methodist Church On Sunday Morning (13th December), Toast Church at Grange Methodist, presented their Nativity Play. There was a short video, and songs and Christmas Bible readings, focusing on ‘Travelling’. The children played their parts well and the congregation joined in the singing. This year, the donations are for a local GP who has been out to lesbos and si going again, with a team of medics, to help the many refugees there, and we were reminded that Jesus himself, as a baby, became a refugee. On Sunday
evening there was a Carol service, led by the minister, the Rev Joanna Rand, and children of the recent Pantomime production took part.
The church was in darkness and Jo lit a candle to emphasise what the coming of Light into the world meant, and the effect it had. After each Bible reading, a member of the panto lit a candle. After the service, there was a party atmosphere in the schoolroom, when children enjoyed a buffet supper and lots of fun.

CHURCH NEWS

With the run up to Christmas we had an excellent recorded talk by Andrew Wilson in Grange school on “Do not worry”, the words Jesus used three times while addressing a crowd in Galilee. God knows our needs and so to replace our natural tendency to worry we should look, consider and seek Him as our highest priority. In light of the flooding in Cumbria that day it seemed especially relevant. There are so many positive aspects we have seen portrayed in the media since the floods that we cannot ignore the fact that there is always hope. Our Christmas meal at Hampsfell House was a real treat enjoyed by everyone present and our thanks go out to our hosts. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Christmas festivities are all over now, although in our Christian Worship we have yet to celebrate Epiphany on January 6th, when we particularly remember the visit to the stable in Bethlehem by the Wise Men.
Churches Together The excited children will be through Christmas, and the Christmas story will have been heard again.
Hopefully those who have suffered from the floods, will be able to see their way forwards. I am sure we have all felt deeply for them, and tried to imagine their plight. So we are into 2016, with all the opportunities and chances it will

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, is the 18th - 25 January. Each morning there will be prayers together, at different churches as follows:-

St Mary’s, Allithwaite
The following day a wonderful concert in church by the Levens Choir with both well known and less familiar Christmas music was greatly enjoyed by a “full house” as well as the opportunity to join in with the Hallelujah chorus and some traditional carols - followed by the equally traditional mulled wine and mince pies. This was the last of several memorable events celebrating our 150th anniversary and as we look back we give thanks to God for all He has done through the life of the church throughout that time, and look forward in anticipation to all that He will do as we enter a new year. But at the time of writing we are still looking forward to further celebrations of His coming into our desperately needy world 2,000 years ago with a traditional service of lessons and carols, the ever popular Crib service on Christmas Eve and a family Communion service on Christmas Day itself. It is always good to welcome visitors and newcomers to the area – not just on these occasions but throughout the year and we pray that 2016 will be a year when we all experience more of what God offers us both as a church and individually.
Midweek services will be starting a new session so remember you are welcome at these events.

At the beginning of December the annual Christingle service, in which the children played a major role, and focusing on Jesus as the light of the world began the lead up to our Christmas celebrations and a “Big Sing” at The Pheasant with the Flookburgh Band on December 14th and accompanied by welcome bowls of hot soup helped to get us in festive mood.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Brown Robin, the Waxwing.
Catching the elusive Aurora October saw a burst of activity from the northern lights with reports from across the north of Britain that the greeny-blue, shape -shifting Aurora were widely visible.
Cumbria is certainly not immune to aurora fever and with a clearish sky a medium to strong Aurora event should be perfectly visible here. All you need is a glimpse of a light-pollution free northerly aspect of the night sky; and there are many places where this is easily achieved.
The Aurora comes about when a high concentration of charged particles emanating from the sun, usually called solar wind, interacts with the earth’s magnetic field. The resultant loss of energy changes the structure of Oxygen and Nitrogen atoms, showing up as the familiar green and blue light in our skies.
Lancaster University hosts a very straightforward and frequently updated website (aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk) that offers an “AuroraWatch UK” activity status, also available as an email alert, and of course on Facebook and Twitter. Having spent a week in the Norwegian northern lights hotspot of Tromsø, Cumbria’s green tinged clouds and fells last month weren’t quite as impressive as Norway’s aurora lit fjords. However, there are plenty of pictures around documenting that with a bit of patience and a good location (beyond the back garden!) the northern lights can look every bit as impressive here as in the Arctic Circle.
South Lakes volunteering
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the work of the National Trust. Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. Neil and Lesley have just completed their first year volunteering with the South Lakes Conservation Group. ‘We’re really pleased to be given this opportunity to tell you why we joined and what we've been up to. We soon realised that the role came with the

Waxwing, are about the size of a Starling with striking plumage and a crest. They breed in North Eastern Europe in isolated pine forests and sometimes move South west in winter, known as irruptions and probably due to harsh weather and lack of food. They favour berries in winter, especially Rowan, ( Mountain Ash), once called the “Fowler’s tree”, from when people would put nets in them to catch birds. Waxwing are often seen in supermarket car parks, where they have planted Rowan. We had about 200 in Grange several years ago and where best seen feeding in the trees near the railway station, but they can turn up anywhere where there are trees/shrubs with berries. There are reports that they are in the UK again this winter so it’s worth keeping a look out. About; I did see about 20-30 Twite on the prom a few weeks ago and they may still be around. Sometimes after a serious storm, rare bids can be found in sheltered bays resting and refuelling, sometimes being blown
off course, I once observed a Fulmar on the prom, which reminds me of one of my first bird I saw here, a Snow bunting, also in the area at the moment I believe. I will be running a winter tree ID workshop on January 10th at Brown Robin nature reserve. This is a free event and a good chance to learn the basics of learning how to identify trees without leaves. Booking is essential, for further information please call Cumbria Wildlife Trust; 01539816300. Tony Saunders, Brown Robin Nature Reserve Manager
added benefits of acquiring new skills, learning about the environment and meeting many interesting new people along the way. On the first day we apprehensively turned up at The National Trust’s “Basecamp”, near Hawkshead, We were met by our Ranger and started the day in the best possible way, with a brew. We were briefed about the day’s activity and soon realised that our safety was of the utmost importance as well as our enjoyment. Our first task was to repair a deer fence, protecting sensitive woodland, near Wray Castle. We were shown how to
knock in fence posts, attach pig nuts to the existing fence and cut away bushes and trees. Since then, we’ve enjoyed many superb days out in many varied and stunning locations. We’re now proud to say we can construct a lakeside path, re-build a dry stone wall (well, we understand how it should be done!) and know how to lay a hawthorn hedge. It would be great to see more people joining us on the volunteer days so if you fancy giving it a go just answer the email to say you’ll be there!” See you in the hills! Neil & Lesley Morris

Celebration Concert raises £1,100 for Jigsaw
The ‘Celebration Concert’ to support Cumbria’s Jigsaw Children’s Hospice certainly lived up to its name. After a short introductory talk about the care available at the Carlisle-based hospice, visitors to The Victoria Hall were treated to a wonderful variety of music and song.
The compere for the night was Jane Thedham, musical director of The Bay Community Singers, who were the first to perform a medley of songs. This was followed by several solo performances from local young people. Their expertise on saxophone, piano, recorder, flute and trumpet were very much appreciated. Vocal solos and duets were another highlight of the evening. The concert was rounded off with further songs from The Bay Community Singers. Tribute was paid to Barbara and Reg Brown of Grange, whose practical and prayerful support of Jigsaw over the past 10 years has been invaluable. The concert managed to raise £1,100 from generous donors - well done everyone!

These are a few of my favourite things… One of my favourite things in December was Cartmel Priory school’s production of ‘The Sound of Music’. This musical is a firm favourite in our household and the young adults put on a polished, professional show. Lucia Harrington was perfectly cast as Maria and she didn’t miss a single note throughout the entire show. This young actress is destined for great things.
Another pitch perfect performance came from 15 year old, Amy Shepherd who played the part of the Mother Abbess. Singing one of the musical’s iconic songs, ‘Climb every mountain’ Amy brought a tear to many an eye. The entire cast were a credit to the school and the set design, lighting and sound technicians and the restaurant style seating completed what was, a very impressive show.
I took a trip to old Peking Circle dance, which is also known as ‘world dance for wellbeing’ is perhaps one of the earliest forms of dance and a way of bringing the community together. Helen Brooks is holding a taster afternoon to give people a chance to try this unique form of dancing, where you all join hands and dance simple dances to lovely music from countries such as Greece, Israel, France, Romania and Russia. The steps are clearly taught, you don’t need a partners and the music reflects many moods from upbeat to calm and meditative. Everyone is welcome.
The taster session will take place in the Methodist Hall on Saturday 16th January 2.30 - 4.30pm. The cost is £7 which includes a drink. Just go along or more information contact Helen on 015395 35022; helen. brooks@phonecoop.coop
If one of my three wishes was to see a great panto, then it was definitely granted. The youth section of Grange Operatic Society were amazing and delighted their audience with their brilliant performances in the much loved pantomime, Aladdin. Chloe Owens put in a well rehearsed and enthusiastic performance as Aladdin alongside the very talented (but a little bit evil!) James Mason as Abanazar. Molly Cowley played the role of the genie extremely well and with great confidence alongside Martha Rand who was excellent in her role as the Spirit of the Ring, particularly as this was her first pantomime. Brother and sister duo Tom and Amy Shepherd were absolutely hilarious in their comedy roles as Wishee Washee and Widow Twankey respectively. They have a great future in the panto.
Mollie Shires was very graceful and confident and perfect for the role of Princess Jasmine, as was her hand-maid So-Shy. Katie Gregory and Mollie Shires brought grace and dignity to the proceedings. Murray Adams was perfectly cast in the role of Emperor with his bold, outgoing personality. Max Burrow, Reece Carter, Euan Adams and Tate Johnston were hilarious as the laughing policemen
(as quoted in their song!).
I really enjoyed this pantomime. It was very funny, well acted and overall thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone obviously worked really hard on their performances. Well done to the whole cast and everyone who worked on this show. Another great success. Review by Katie Shepherd. Junior Reporter.

SCHOOL REPORTS
Grange Primary
This half term has been busy with sporting events. Many of our Junior children took part in the cross country at Cartmel Woods. All children did really well and the year 3 and 4 teams won both the girls and boys trophies.
We also held an inter house athletics festival in school. Each child took part in the long jump, chest push and speed bounce, working with other year groups. All the scores were then added together to give a house winner; yellow! During November, the whole school took part in a World Wars week. Everyone completed activities based on either World War I or II, within their classes, as well as talking to a World War I soldier, from the King’s own Lancashire Regiment Museum,
about his life in the trenches, and looking into Field Hospitals that were around Grange, with Kendal Archives. The whole school has also been involved in Christmas plays - EYFS and Year 1 in the Nativity and Year 2 and KS2 in a pantomime. The Nativity was a great success, with an excellent turnout of parents, relatives and friends to see the youngest children in our school dressed in their fabulous new costumes and sing their little hearts out. Cinderella Rockerfella was a similar success with brilliant solo performances from Cinderella, Rockerfella, Fairy Godmother and Buttons as well as the wonderfully dressed Ugly Sisters! All children performed excellently and certainly raised the roof, especially with the finale!

Cartmel Priory School A taste of the West End came to Cartmel recently with this year’s production ‘The Sound of Music’. Many people have said this is the best show we have ever produced.
Students from Years 7-11 took part. Leading lady, playing Maria, was Lucia H, a Year 11 GCSE Music student. Lucia has been a key member of our casts over the past five years and been outstanding in every role she’s played. It was especially good to see her play Maria so superbly. As well as familiar faces, we had a number of newcomers; notably Cameron McM as Captain von Trapp and Ella O as Elsa, the Captain’s love interest, both making the roles their own. James M, another five year veteran, gave an eye catching performance as Max Detweiler. James has really developed as an actor and we hope he will continue his interest in future years.
We were fortunate to borrow costumes from the lovely nuns at Boarbank for our sisters of Nonburg Abbey, very ably led by GCSE Drama student, Amy S, who shone as the Mother Abbess. Saskia R, also a GCSE Music student, who played Sister Sophia, was another student to have performed in the last five productions. Next year will be strange without Lucia, James and Saskia but every year new talent comes shining through. It was great to have so many of the GCSE drama students involved, including Reoghan C as Admiral von Schrieber, Georgia C as Frau Zeller, Shannon S as Baroness Elberfeld, Stephanie G as Sister Berthe, Emily B as Sister Sophia and Thomas K as Frederick von Trapp. Well done. The von Trapp children were also splendid. They looked fabulous in costumes made by Mrs Dean and sang beautifully. Sincere thanks to everyone involved. Mrs Ashcroft
Allithwaite Primary We have had a wonderful run up to Christmas. The annual PTA Christmas Fair was, once again, a great success. There were a wide variety of stalls, games, food and drink and we even had a visit from Father Christmas who, along with his helpful elves, took time out of his busy schedule to set up a grotto in school! There were many fantastic raffle prizes kindly donated by some generous local businesses and great food hampers to be won. Thanks go to the PTA for organising such a fun and successful event for all. School Singing Squad have been treating our community, performing a variety of songs during the evening of the Christmas Fair and again for the residents at Boarbank Nursing home where they sang
some traditional Christmas carols and also songs from our upcoming Christmas play ‘A Midwife Crisis’. Rehearsals are going well for the play, with Snowy and Tawny Owls classes acting, with singing support from Barn Owls and Eagle Owls, the children are all excited and looking forward to the performances during the last week of school. The children have got into the festive spirit by making their classrooms look like a winter wonderland with handmade snowflakes and stars, festive painting and crafts. Snowy Owls class even held a Christmas craft morning for both children and families together which proved a great (and glittery) success! We are all now looking forward to a relaxing Christmas break, ready to be refreshed for the New Year.
Flookburgh Primary
Lindale Primary and Pre-school
On Monday 16th November, eight of our Class 4 pupils represented the school at the local schools cluster cross-country competition. All entrants had to run a gruelling and very muddy three miles through the Cartmel woods! We are very proud of all the children which took part, and are delighted to share the news that the Girls’ Team came first, bringing home the Competition Shield. A big well done to all involved! Nursery and Reception spent a lot of time making salt dough tree decorations for their stall. These were beautifully painted and are sure to look superb hanging on any tree this season! To link in with the food theme, the children also prepared their own World Kitchen Recipe Books filled with tasty treats. These were snapped up, so there will be plenty of international foods cooking around the village from now on! Class 4 had a variety of produce for sale on their stall: chutney, mince pies and spice pots (sold alongside recipes for delicious meal ideas!). Class 4 all went out to pick fruits for their chutney earlier in the term, the photos of which can be seen on the Class 4 webpage. The mince pies were all prepared the day before the Winter Market to ensure they were as fresh as possible!
We ended a very busy Autumn term, with 3 wonderful performances of Alice in Wonderland in Lindale Village Hall. This was a challenging script with many children having a lot of lines to learn and several characters having solos. As always, the children rose to the challenge; were word perfect and really enjoyed singing all the great songs. Our after school ‘Fun Club’ held a Christmas special, when the children watched a film snuggled up on cushions in onesies and PJ’s. The Nativity play performed by Years 1,2 and 3 took place in St Paul’s, and we enjoyed Christmas lunch and parties. The role play area in Reception/Year 1 was turned into a stable, complete with the baby Jesus. Lindale Preschool have had a great fun filled half term learning about Africa reading Handa's Surprise, looking at where she lives and how far it is from Lindale, we also tasted some of the different fruit from the story. During our transport topic we had a return trip on the train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside with reception and year one. Leading up to Christmas the children have made lots of Christmas crafts, we have read the Christmas story and with the nativity set some of the children have retold the story, they did a fantastic performance of 'The Sleepy Shepherd' in front of friends, relatives and everyone at Lindale School finishing the year off with a Christmas party.

Cynically, I wonder why South Lakes District Council bothers to apply conditions to a planning permission, only to allow them to be discharged so easily at a later date? The latest attempt at this ploy involves an application to chop down three magnificent pine trees on the Berner’s site. They are neither diseased nor undermining or threatening buildings. These trees are a mature and striking group of pines that are a landmark at Berners. They provide a sense of place, scale and history to the town and its buildings. Like the pollarded lime trees that will be felled further along Kents Bank Road, they are simply in the developer’s way. This process is happening so quickly and insidiously that if we are not careful, the Neighbourhood Plan might be shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted! Grange must make an urgent choice. EITHER we have a town which is unique, maintaining its special character and history, and with new developments fitting in with the needs of residents and tourists, OR a tree-less sprawl of mediocre speculative building which is determined by profit-driven developers. We certainly need affordable housing in Grange but we don’t need dense and inappropriate developments which fundamentally change the town’s appearance, weaken its attractiveness to visitors and seriously challenge its infrastructure.
I am now increasingly concerned that this is what we are getting because of the way that planning permissions granted by SLDC seem to be manipulated by developers in Grange and are beginning to threaten the town’s unique qualities. The council requires a builder to research and assess a site to be aware of the many constraints that they must consider when drawing up their plans. To this end, developers are supposed to carry out tree surveys, environmental impact surveys, traffic analyses, and infrastructure assessments etc which should govern what their final submitted plans and designs look like. The planning authority then approves plans, having checked that these constraints have been taken notice of. If they don’t think that this has been done, or that there are further factors the council want the builder to comply with, planners can place their own conditions on a development. Permission is granted by SLDC with ‘Conditions’. Again and again, when the initial dust has settled and work begun, developers ask for these conditions to be lifted or constraints to be relaxed – and more often than not, permission is granted. Subsequent planning applications to ‘discharge conditions’ can go through quietly, almost unnoticed by the public, and without consultation with any original objectors. Yours, Andy Mortimer ED: As we go to press the application has in fact been turned down.
Dear Editor
When I moved to Grange 5 years ago I was delighted to find it had an excellent library. I love the well stocked shelves, the jigsaws, the computers, the story sacks for little ones, and most of all the friendly helpful staff. Since I became disabled I have particularly valued the free adjacent car park and avoided the temptation, strong as it is, to visit the shops after returning my books. I was surprised to learn that there are people who abuse this facility to the extent that they park their cars on the car park for much of the day. It is unfair that commuters to businesses in the town should deprive young mums with several children in tow, or elderly and infirm library users of the spaces to which they are entitled. Jean Platt

understanding the importance of the person with dementia’s feelings; how to help maintain their comfort and detect pain; why meaningful occupation is so important and suggestions about ways to engage individuals; unusual or challenging behaviours and how to reduce them. The programme also provides relaxation instruction so that carers can use it when they are feeling stressed. Food glorious food!.....and what a fantastic amount of all kinds of food was donated at St Paul’s Church Meeting Room on Sunday 13th December. We had a great turnout of volunteers sorting foods to be distributed in Ulverston, Barrow and Millom to people unable to afford essential foods, including some suffering as a result of the latest floods. This time people had given many 'Christmassy' items so that a good time can be had by all members of our communities. A concert rehearsal was in progress in the church, and as we sorted and packed the very enjoyable music of flutes entertained us. It is indeed unfortunate that we need to continue to collect for Food Banks. Even though the tax credit cuts have been abandoned, further cuts are planned which will affect the poorer members of our communities . Please bring any donations to the next collection at St Paul’s on Sunday 7th February, 1pm - 3pm. And thanks once again to the people in Grange and District for their generosity and thoughtfulness. Grange Prom Youth Group would like to thank network rail for all the new fencing which they have provided on the recreation area on the promenade; from the tennis court to the subway. It completes the renovation of the site which the group has worked on for the past 10 years with the help of the community and many societies. The facilities will be returned to the Town Council in 2016. Judith Shapland

Leven Valley Support Group for St Mary’s Hospice held an enchanted evening of songs sung by the male voice quartet “Voce” on Fri 20th November in The Café Ambio Haverthwaite. The evening commenced with a look around The Lakeland Motor Museum courtesy of Mr Les Micklethwaite. The Furness four piece then proceeded to treat the audience of a 100+ to a variety of music in a classical style which included songs by Bocelli, Bette Midler, Josh Groban, Snow Patrol and many others. During the break there was a

To everyone who supported Joe and Connie Calling. Rachel and I would like to thank you all for making the event so successful. Not only did it raise awareness of MLD, it also raised £13,000 to go towards a lift and physiotherapy for Connie. The day would not have been possible without contributions from businesses, bands, volunteers and friends from the Furness and Cartmel Peninsulas and Kendal area. We plan to continue raising awareness of MLD by setting up the ‘Butterfly Hugs Foundation’. The foundation is intended to be a tribute to Joe and Connie, with supporting families affected by MLD as its legacy. It is called Butterfly Hugs because that is the phrase parents of children with MLD use when comforting each other. The Butterfly Hugs Foundation will have three main roles; to unite families affected by MLD and other rare diseases, campaign for prenatal testing, and holding an annual event to raise money. We will become a registered charity and will keep everybody updated through Facebook and a website. We intend the Butterfly Hugs Foundation to help provide financial support for families of children with terminal illnesses and all rare diseases.
raffle of a magnificent Christmas cake, courtesy of Andrew Southcott Catering. After refreshments had been served Voce continued the evening and ended with the group singing The Impossible Dream which had the audience spellbound! Andrew Southcott waived his fee for the evening which helped us raise a magnificent amount of £1200.
The Support Group would like to thank everyone for their very kind generosity and for their continuous support.
Trusts and life policies
Funds raised will provide support in the form of a grant so that families can subsidise holidays, days out or for unexpected expenses. Also, a percentage of money raised in next year's event will be donated to the Jigsaw Hospice in Cumbria. We have already started planning next year's event and have secured the support of seven bands including; Barebones, Braxton Hicks and Kevin Kendal. The date will be Saturday 14th May with further details to follow. We must never lose sight of the inspiration for our events. Connie a four year old girl who loved to dance, read, play and smile. She has had everything except for her smile taken away because her genes didn't let her body stop the build up of sulphides. This caused damage to the myelin sheath resulting in messages in her brain not being sent to parts of her body. This cruel disease is so rare that it is often missed. Treatment is only in the trial stages and Joe is fortunate to be part of the trial in Italy. This not only gives hope that he will remain well it also means that a lot more can be learnt about treating the condition. We thank you once again for all of your help and send Butterfly Hugs to you all. Sian, Rachel and Nicola
I love Trusts. They have all sorts of interesting uses to protect and control assets for the future during your lifetime and beyond. They can be as restrictive or as flexible as you like. Life policies are an interesting example. If you take out a life policy to provide for your family on your death, you should always consider whether a trust would be useful. If you put the policy in trust, you appoint trustees, who can then claim the policy on your death just by producing a Death Certificate. No Grant of Probate necessary. Money can then be made available quickly to those you want to protect (the beneficiaries of the trust). The proceeds are out of your estate for Inheritance Tax too. Imagine you take out a big life policy and pay premiums all those years and then the taxman snaffles 40% of it just because you did not write it in trust? Some clients actually use life policies to pay an inevitable Inheritance Tax bill. Paying Inheritance Tax on the proceeds of a policy intended to pay off Inheritance Tax would be plain silly. You can provide for children of previous marriages by taking out a life policy in trust for them so that you can then leave your estate to your new spouse. It can be unpleasant for the surviving spouse if you have left your half of your house for them to live in for life, only to have your eager children breathing down their necks and willing them to choke on their next cup of cocoa. The children get the proceeds of the life policy and ride off happily, leaving your new spouse free of second-family ties. And the premium on a life policy may seem cheap compared to years of angst and step-mum/children frictions. The rules for the taxation of Pension Scheme Death Benefits have changed recently but Trusts can still be useful there too. If a spouse inherits a large Death in Service benefit it is Inheritance Tax free when they receive it but might then be taxed on their death. Spousal Bypass Trusts can be used for them to be able to access, borrow and use the benefits but keeping the bulk of them away from the taxman. The rules are different in terms of inheriting the actual pension fund in which Trusts may or may not be the best option. All of this needs to be considered in the context of your Will planning. You need advice from both a good Independent Financial Adviser and a good lawyer to get this planning right. At Poole Townsend, we have both.

In our last issue we told you about gardener, Andrew Duddle who very kindly bought Boris a mate, a female Muscovy duck called Doris. Rumours were abound, however, that the lady in question was called Olga, so we put it to the vote. Thanks to all those who got in touch; you voted 8 to 1 in favour of Doris. So, Boris and Doris it is. May they live happily ever after and if there is ever any sign of little Boris’s or Doris’s please let us know.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP
Grange Garden Society
Grange Garden Society reported a successful year at their AGM on 20th November. The Society held two profitable fund raising events during 2015. The stall at the Edwardian Festival had been well supported by members growing plants and the surplus was then sold at a well-attended plant sale and coffee morning. Many members enjoyed two garden visits to Windy Hall at Bowness and Hornby Castle and a further three interesting visits are already planned for 2016. Trophies were awarded to those members who had accrued most marks with exhibits on the Show table during summer months. The meeting ended with details of the forthcoming programme for 2016. This will be displayed in the Library, outside the URC Hall and various other locations. Following the AGM members enjoyed a Gardening themed quiz and a Jacob’s Join. The next meeting is the Annual Christmas Lunch at the Grand hotel on Friday 4th December at 12 for 12.30. We hope to welcome old and new members to the January 15th meeting at 2pm in the URC Church Hall. Our Chairman Tom Peters will be telling us all about Orchids. Very handy if you received one for Christmas! We are always pleased to see new members.

In our November workshop, members created an Autumn Bonanza. Local artist, Janette Phillips, showed us how to use a variety of materials and tasks to explore and create leaf textures. Then we drew and printed into a wash to produce interesting compositions. Later in the month, our members had a fun afternoon at the Christmas Party. We drew and painted a selection of Christmassy objects and designed cards. A visit from Santa’s little helpers, with a present for everyone, a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie all helped to get us into the festive spirit. A very enjoyable afternoon. All day workshops and afternoon painting sessions will resume in the New Year.
NSPCC Grange Branch
On Saturday 21st November, Grange over Sands NSPCC held a Christmas Coffee Morning in the United Reformed Church Hall. A steady stream of supporters came and enjoyed a very sociable event, during which they helped to raise a grand total of £470, which will go towards the work of the NSPCC in our region to protect vulnerable children. We should like to thank everyone who has supported the NSPCC over the past year and look forward to seeing you at our future events in 2016. Meanwhile, we wish you all a Very Happy New Year.
Grange over Sands Golf Club
As the year comes to a close we end it with a Christmas Party lunch at the golf club in December. We enjoyed some good weather during the year but it has certainly ended on a wet note with 10 inches of rain in November. Thanks go our green staff who have worked very hard throughout the year and to both Captains for all their efforts during 2015. Our new Captains, Bertie Houliston and Hazel Shaw are looking forward to a good year of golfing and hoping the weather will be kind. There are many social activities planned for 2016, the first one being the ‘Meet the Captains’ on 3rd January from 12 noon till 2 p.m. with drinks and snacks. We are now taking bookings for our Opens for 2016 for Ladies, Gents, Seniors and Mixed competitions. Like many businesses and private homes we have been suffering from lack of telephones and the internet for the past few weeks and we all hope that Open Reach will get the problems solved very soon.

The December Meeting was chaired by new President Caroline Blee who introduced Jeff Wood. His talk about sewers, drains and lavatories ( or lack of ) down the ages had members in stitches. It was also very interesting and with excellent illustrations. One piece of information: Sewermen are now called, ‘Wastewater Network Operators!’. After that, the business took place. Arrangements were made for the New Year dinner at the Derby Arms. All who had helped at the Christmas Fair were thanked . It raised £539 for the Parish Hall. Subscriptions are due in January; also Resolutions voting slips from the WI Magazine to be brought along. Pauline Hodgson was congratulated on her birthday. Next Meeting: January 12th. Phil Brown on Saving Cumbria`s Wildlife. Visitors welcome Tel: 52302

The club’s year has ended with two very good talks. The first, ‘Great Minds Inspired’ inspired our lesser minds by informing us of the lives of Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. The second talk introduced us to the amazing life of Lady Anne Clifford, a

woman before her time. She was at Skipton Castle in 1590, had in her long life contacts with the court of Queen Elizabeth and had control of extensive properties with castles to protect them. Many of her castles were bombarded by Oliver Cromwell because she was a Royalist. Her escapades were many and varied, too many to record in detail here, but for a woman of small stature, in a man’s world, she displayed indefatigable energy and influence, dying at Brougham Castle at the age of 86. Our 2016 programme opens on 12th January with, ‘Transport Delights in the Isle of Man’, followed by ‘Everest Base Camp Walk’ on 19th January. On 26th January our New Year Quiz run by Ann Anderson. A varied programme we would suggest and one to which you are cordially invited. Come and join us at Abbot Hall every Tuesday at 10.15am. Phone Alan Anderson for further details on 015395 33696.
Grange and District Photographic Society
On November 16th Brian Martland showed why the Lakeland Landscape looks as it does today, showing the features involved in its development. On November 23rd Lee Kitchingman discussed how we could improve our digital images before submitting them in competitions. This was very informative and helpful. Unfortunately Nick Witham from Wilkinson’s Cameras was unable to visit on November 30th. Instead Lee Kitchingman continued his appraisal of images from last week. Following this Ron Croy showed a compilation of images from the Dodgson collection showing Grange and district in the 19th and early 20th century. Due to the bad weather our meeting on December 7th had to be cancelled. The Projected Digital Image Competition will now be held on March 7th Our meetings begin again on January 11th with a visit from Stephen Taylor. Meetings are in the United Reformed Church Hall, Kents Bank Road, Grange, 7.30pm start, on a Monday. Everyone is welcome to join or attend as a visitor, £3.50 for a visitor (deducted from your membership fees if you later join the society). For details of future meetings look on the What’s On section and for more information visit our website - www. grangephotographicsociety.co.uk
North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild.
On Tuesday 8th of December members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met for their Christmas Jacob’s Join and Social. Once the brief business meeting was concluded members enjoyed a stitching game devised by Chairperson Sandra Kendall loosely based on the game of Consequences. Amid much hilarity pieces of fabric were passed round and sections stitched in sequence. When the pieces were finished and displayed everyone was delighted how well each piece turned out. After voting for the Christmas Competition everyone enjoyed the Jacob’s Join. The next meeting is on Tuesday 12th of January when Sandra Kendall will be taking a workshop entitled “Lichens and Encrustations”. New members are welcome so if interested please contact the Secretary Joanna Henson on 01229 861800.

On November 25th which is UN Day for Elimination of Violence against Women club members were in Barrow handing out White Ribbon stickers to men and boys to raise awareness about domestic violence. The Club also provided resources to the sixth form of Kirkbie Kendal school to raise awareness of the problem of violence
affecting teenagers particularly girls. In previous years we have campaigned in Grange, Ulverston and Cartmel Priory School. The club was delighted to win an award from our Region for our work on this campaign in 2014. At the 1st December Club meeting Dr Monica Placzek gave an inspiring and thought provoking talk about her work in a Children’s Home in Kathmandu in Nepal and talked about the devastating effect of the earthquakes. The club are planning a fundraising event for club charities on Jan 22nd at Cartmel Village Hall. This will be a Cheese tasting and talk by Ian from Cartmel Cheeses and there will also be a Cheesy Quiz! Tickets at £10 are available from Isabel 015395 36378. Further information on our website. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on our work and events see our website www.sigbi. org/grange-over-sands/
Grange and District U3A
A busy pre-Christmas period for Grange U3A. In October Dr Jean Turnbull presented a fascinating glimpse of South Lakeland’s early 20th century social history at our general meeting. She described the oral history project based at Kendal Town Hall and gave a number of examples of life as described by local members of the community. In November Jonathon Garratt, Managing Director of Cartmel Steeplechase Course gave us an entertaining behind the scenes look at the racing industry and a snap-shot of his professional life. The interest groups remain the main focus of activity with the outdoor groups (walking, cycling, birdwatching and landscape/geology) starting their winter programmes and preparing for Christmas celebrations. Recent Local Explorer visits have been to Lancaster and Barrow in Furness and the next is to see the Quaker tapestry in Kendal. Three new groups have been established: a country dancing group held its first session in November at Allithwaite Community Hall whilst an Environmental Awareness Group and a Railway Enthusiasts Group have also held their first meetings. Grange & District U3A currently has 38 interest groups, reflecting the range of interests and expertise in the growing membership. U3A website: www. u3asites.org.uk/grange .
Grange Lecture Society
On 24th November Peter Warwick, who helped organise this year’s bicentenary celebrations of the Battle of Waterloo, delivered the John Kirkman Memorial Lecture entitled ‘The Art of Waterloo’. Using artwork of the time Peter gave a graphic account of the Napoleonic Wars culminating in that important battle. Elizabeth Thompson’s recreation of the charge of the Scots Greys and Turner’s sombre masterpiece The Field of Waterloo were among many paintings projected. On 8th December traveller David Edwards in an illustrated lecture entitled ‘Botswana: Love, Lions and Democracy’ told of two visits to Botswana, the first as leader of a youth expedition that spent three months living in the bush surrounded by wild animals, the second staying with local people. He also told the remarkable love story of Seretse Khama, who, after marrying a white woman and forced by local disapproval into exile in Britain, returned home to become Botswana’s first President and founder of its newly independent democracy. On 12th January Michael Leach talks about wildlife filming in ‘It’s a Funny Way to Make a Living’ and on 26th January Brian Wilson’s lecture is entitled ‘Monorail to Maglev and Beyond’. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

At our last meeting members had a great time learning how to felt. After lots of stabbing (with needles only!) several felt Xmas puddings emerged
WHAT'S ON and one robin. Members toasted their hard work with mulled wine and a feast of food. In the summer members made 100 paper flowers to decorate our stall at the Edwardian Festival to mark 100 years of the WI. Some of these flowers were used to decorate our Xmas tree in St Paul’s Church – a great example of recycling. 19 members had a delicious festive meal at the ‘At Home’ bistro in early December. We took a moment to remember those who were suffering the effects of the recent floods, including one of our own members. We made a collection to go to the Community Flood Fund. We hope the New Year is a better one for those affected. We start our New Year with a talk about Morecambe Bay by Peter Rimmer on 28 January. New members are very welcome. Please contact Margaret on Grange 36735.
Furness & South Lakes Group of Freemasons
Lowick resident Allan Curtis was installed as the new master of the Arthur John Brogden Lodge of Freemasons at its recent meeting at Grange Masonic Hall. There were 52 members and their guests at the meeting including special guest Chris Band and Furness and South Lakeland chairman Alan Jones. Outgoing master Alan Telford has had an excellent year representing the Grange over Sands lodge at other meetings in the area. Chris was presented with a cheque for £500 for distribution to good causes with the lodge previously this year having donated £500 locally. A raffle raised £210 which will be used to help the victims of the Cumbria floods.

Members and guests enjoyed festive food and fun at Arnside and Arnside Knott W.I.'s Christmas Party. The ladies Choir and afternoon tea proved to be a very successful event. The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 11th. January 2016. W.I.Hall, Orchard Road Arnside
Newton and Field Broughton WI
Members of Newton and Field Broughton enjoyed the Christmas party. The food was excellent and the entertainment was a success. Members were wished a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year by the committee. The first meeting in 2016 will be on 13th January when the annual subscriptions of £37.50 will be due. There will also be a quiz.
Grange over Sands Institute
Over the past twelve months this classic building on Main Street has been yet further enhanced with improved heating and the installation of additional facilities. Much work has been carried out by enthusiastic members and the accommodation provides comfortable meeting rooms which are available for hire. The AGM will be held at the Institute on Thursday 28th January at 7.30pm. The meeting will once again be open to members of the public and all are welcome so, whether or not you are an existing member or just interested in the way in which this public charitable organisation is run, come along and see how the intentions, first set out more than 150 years ago, are fulfilled today. We look forward to seeing you on the night. Nominations for the Committee are always welcome from existing and intending members and this year will include the appointment of a new President consequent upon the retirement of John Blake, who has held the position since 1998. If you would care to help in the management then have a word with John on 015395 35017 or with any Committee Member.
Coffee Club
In November Andrew Dodd told us how God gradually led him to realise that theology is how God relates to real life. God had shown him that his mission was to refresh Christian disciples and help raise an apparently dead church back to new life. After several years as a practicing lawyer, Andrew had a burnout experience and was released to become a Baptist minister, this was possible as he was also invited to work with the Crown Prosecution service Initially he felt a tension between his pastoral non-confrontational role and his confrontational role with the CPS. But Andrew showed how this worked out in both his life as a Crown Prosecutor and as a Baptist Minister. The essence of crime is the violation or harm to the victims and the community and the offender. A Crown Prosecutor has to assess whether there is both sufficient evidence to prosecute and also if it is in the public interest to proceed. Isaiah 59 confirmed God’s gracious balance between justice and mercy for victim and offender. On January 19th David Beattie, from A Rocha, will talk about ‘Faith and the Environment’. The meeting at 10.30am is preceded by coffee, to which all are welcome.

Far Arnside campsite wins AA award Hollins Farm campsite, Silverdale has been named the North West winner by the AA’s Caravan and Camping Guide. Hollins Farm, which is situated between the beautiful villages of Arnside and Silverdale, is owned and run by Holgates Holiday Parks. The AA guide states: “Stone-built buildings blend with the fields to create an authentic example of a bygone age. Pitch density is also generous with spacious all-level touring pitches and the surrounding views with gentle hills create a wonderful ambience of peace and tranquillity. The superb amenities block, with under-floor heating, is equipped with excellent modern fixtures and fittings providing good privacy options and family facilities.” www.holgates.co.uk/hollins-farm. Grange & District Community First Responders Our eleventh AGM was held on 16 November. As ever we have experienced a busy and eventful year and have welcomed two new responders to the team. Chris Cousins has proved to be a most able team leader and Peter Gillespie has taken on the role of training the Heartstart trainers in south Cumbria. Peter and his team of field trainers have also delivered training sessions to groups throughout the area focusing on the use of defibrillators. The group has taken a lead role in encouraging the installation of CPads (external boxes containing a defibrillator) for local schools - the latest are at Grange and Cartmel primary schools funded by Rotary International. The other Cpads in Grange are at the Promenade cafe and the Pavilion on the playing field; in Cartmel at the village hall and Priory school; in Allithwaite at the Community Centre and in Lindale at Hadwin's Audi showroom, the primary school and at the business park near the Lyndene estate. Cumbria Fire Service
has fitted a defibrillator outside the fire station that is available to the public. These installations bring the total to eleven with others in the pipeline. These are additional to the defibrillators that are located indoors at various sites in the locality. It is particularly pleasing and a demonstration of their commitment that a significant number of our founder members are still involved; either serving as front line volunteers or as committee members. However we need more volunteers to train and serve as responders and also on the management committee. We still need to recruit more active responders in order to reduce the pressure on the existing team. Recruits need to be at least 18, physically fit, able to drive and have access to a vehicle. No previous experience is necessary because full training is provided. Our team is one of the busiest in the area and the responders deserve our congratulations for their
continued commitment to serve our local community. We also need to recruit more people to join the committee. We must have officers and committee members in order to maintain our charitable status. It is an interesting and worthwhile voluntary job and not at all onerous - we meet four times per year including the annual meeting each November. In addition we need to recruit two volunteers: firstly, someone to assist us with fundraising - there is considerable financial outlay annually to for pager rentals and to replace essential equipment; and secondly, someone to liaise with the guardians who look after the public access defibrillators on their premises. Please get in touch if you would like to join us or if you know of someone who may like to do so. Please call 015395 32510 or 07713 085 002 if you are interested in becoming a responder or committee member. Jane Strawbridge, Chair of the Management Committee

ADULT EDUCATION
As we say farewell to 2015, we are also saying goodbye to a number of our tutors who are leaving for a variety of reasons such as new jobs, retirement, imminent medical operations or to pursue new opportunities. These include some of our stalwarts, who have been as much a fixture at this centre as myself and include Celia Carlsen, Joan Bentley and Sue Hotchkiss. I would like to personally thank all the tutors who have left this year for many years of loyal service to the centre and wish them well. We will be getting replacement tutors for some of these classes and l hope that learners will continue to support the centre by enrolling on them, as sustaining a certain level of provision is essential to ensuring that we retain adult education classes in this locality. I feel l need to make clear that the centre is certainly not shutting from January and is as open for business as ever. On a positive note, we will be welcoming Bernie Riley to cover Monday and Tuesday yoga classes and Tasha Jones will be running the Pilates classes at Leven Valley, Grange, Cartmel and Lindale. Both have extensive experience of the subject areas and l am sure you will be as supportive & welcoming as you have always been. Elaine Towler will be running some of our healthy heart provision in Ulverston and on a Thursday
in Grange and she is a fully qualified BACR Phase IV instructor. She also could offer yogacise, a class aimed to stretch and strengthen the body and build core strength so would appreciate people letting us know if they wish to attend and register their interest. I hope you will bear with us as we may need to juggle around some classes and change times or days to accommodate the departure of old tutors and the work schedule of the new ones in order to deliver the breadth of curriculum you have always enjoyed. In terms of new classes, we have a variety starting after Christmas, which include:Level 3 Certificate in Counselling skills, starting 25 January Level 3 award in Education and Training which gives you the threshold qualification to teach in adult education starting 24 February. We also propose to run the art appreciation course with Cherrie Trelogan, formerly of Abbot hall Museum as we have had renewed interest, so please get in touch if this appeals, hopefully starting second wed in January Willow weaving at Castle Head Field Centre on 06 February Postponed using emotional intelligence workshop runs on 16 January Digital Imaging for Photographers starting 05 January A weekly buying and selling on eBay class starting on 16 february A weekly photography class starting Wednesday 13th January for 10
weeks with Colin Reynolds, entitled a Photographic Journey. A variety of Saturday workshops including glass fusing 06 February, Paint in watercolour workshop 23 January, Create your own visual diary 27 February, Upholstery workshop on 23 January, Creative writing: writing from life 06 February and soft furnishing for the home 06 February to name a few. The office will shut for Christmas on the 17th December 2015 and reopen January 4th. During this period there is a 24 hour answer machine so please leave your messages and we’ll respond as soon as possible. Finally, thanks for the last 12 ½ years where l have had the privilege of working with many lovely people serving this community. There will be much l will miss, such as our association with Cartmel Priory School and the unwavering support they have provided to my personally. I will also miss the “hands on” nature of this job, dealing with the village halls, tutors and learners and can’t thank everyone enough for their warm wishes, emails, cards and gifts l have received, for which l am extremely grateful. My only hope is that subsidised education continues as these classes are very important to many people and that everyone gets behind the new tutors and staff at the centre to sustain the successful business we have built over many years with your support. Signing off for the very last time! Jude x
