Telephone compensation - persevere!

Key things to look out for in this issue include the news that new money has become available for the Lido, courtesy of the Coastal Communities fund and SLDC. How should it be used to actually make something happen rather than just talking about it? What do you think? If you were affected by the telephone chaos in December as we were, and you have considered trying to get compensation, you may wish to look at the letters page for some timely advice. In this month’s county matters we learn that staffing in the library is to be reduced to one. There are a number of issues surrounding the proposed development at Kents Bank and consultation ends on 12th February. In all of these matters we welcome your comments via our letters page. Finally we are approaching our 25th anniversary this year. If you have any memories or stories of how Grange Now has impacted on your life or a group you represent then please send it in as we will be running a ‘looking back over 25 years’ feature. Best wishes to all our readers from Sharon, Sarah, Kerstin, Glenn and Chris PS First deadline for Ulverston Now, our new sister paper, is 5th February.

Arnside - use it or lose it We have been delivering copies of this paper through the letterbox of 1,300 homes in Arnside for over six months now. In each issue there have been Arnside stories, what’s on listings and local news and announcements. We have also featured an Arnside artist as our artist of the month. This has however been entirely generated from the editorial staff at Grange Now. Apart from Arnside highlights who sent us event news, we have received very little from the Arnside community such as school or church news, society or clubs, events and so on. So, please can we ask for your

feedback. Do you want to continue receiving Grange Now in Arnside? Any constructive feedback would help us know whether to continue delivering to Arnside or not. We also need more local deliverers. Again without local people to deliver it is difficult to continue. If you want to help us deliver then please get in touch. Arnside residents - do you enjoy receiving and reading this paper or not. What could we do better? Please tell us either way. Arnside, the decision is yours. info@grangenow.co.uk

Following our article last month about the lack of telephone service in Grange before Christmas, we emailed Gavin Patterson, CEO of BT, asking him to do the decent thing and intervene, or at the very least give one contact name and number for those affected - we’re confident he’ll reply very soon!! In the meantime, we have had a number of residents coming in with their advice on how to get a refund which is namely: If you are looking to your provider to give you compensation - you must persevere. A couple of residents, who are

customers with BT, said they were told initially there would be no compensation and then they were offered a nominal amount, but if you refuse to accept what they offer you initially, you may get a refund of the charges and two month’s line rental as a goodwill gesture. The problem came about with a faulty cable which belongs to BT Openreach, who apparently have to pay £8 per day per customer to BT and other service providers, for loss of service. So if you are looking for compensation, contact your service provider, and don’t take no for an answer!

Start your own Business in 2016 Grange Chamber of Trade would like to encourage the start up of new businesses in Grange and the surrounding areas. Perhaps you have an idea for a new business, but don't know what to do next or have had a dream of always being your own boss. Regardless of whether it will be a full time business or something you do in your spare time it can be a lot easier if you have advice, support and help. We want to run seminars and workshops to help people start

up a business. There is support from district, county and regional agencies to help people as well as from local banks.

The Chamber of Trade needs to know how many people are interested in attending a seminar or workshop. It doesn't commit you to anything and you don't have to pay for anything.

Please email grangestartups@ gmail.com with your name, address and telephone number and we can get the ball rolling.

‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is a common saying, but in no other area does this resonate more than in Financial Planning. The key to successful Financial Planning is to ensure that you hold a diverse spread of asset types. Other than Cash and Property; two of the main asset types are Equities and Fixed Interest Securities, such as Corporate Bonds. Equities/Shares; investing in shares means that you own a share of that company and therefore receive a share of the profits by way of dividend. Dividend income is often seen as a hedge against inflation; in theory, if revenue and costs rise with inflation, so will the profits. Consistent and rising dividends should mean a rise in the share price, ensuring investors benefit from both income and capital growth. Conversely, dividends are by no means guaranteed and the value of shares can fall as well as rise so investors may get back less than they invest.

Corporate Bonds are essentially loans to companies in return for a fixed rate of interest; the loan being repayable on a fixed date in the future. Before being repaid by the company, Corporate Bonds can be bought and sold on the stock market with the price very much determined by supply and demand, affected by interest rates, inflation and the financial strength of the company. In terms of risk, this

type of investment sits below shares as the company simply needs to have enough cash to service the debt, whereas shareholders require the company to make reasonable profits to pay a dividend. Although this type of investment is considered lower risk than shares, they do have an element of risk as some companies will default; in addition to this, currently we are seeing high prices being paid for this type of asset so whilst it will provide a regular income it may produce a capital loss when the maturity date arrives, thus increasing the potential risk of what has traditionally been seen as a ‘steady away’ type investment.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Development Brief for land at Kents Bank On Tuesday 19th January, a public consultation was held on the proposed development of houses, and light industrial business units, on the fields between Greaves Wood Road and Allithwaite Road in Kents Bank. The consultation, which took place at Abbot Hall Hotel between 11am and 7pm, was very well attended and members of the Development team from SLDC and members of Grange Town Council were there to answer questions. Grange Now spoke to a number of residents who expressed concern at the proposed ‘access’ points, two of which are straight out on to the 60mph stretch of Allithwaite Road. A member of the development team did say that it was highly unlikely that the access would be sited here due to the fact of turning out onto such a fast road. The other proposed access points are Greaves Wood Road (at the bottom of Kirkhead Road) and at the other end of Greaves Wood Road where it joins onto Priory Crescent. Another cause for concern was the lack of infrastructure with no proper pavements between this development and the local schools along with flooding issues. The most overriding factor though is the cost of these houses as there is simply not a big enough ratio of affordable housing. There are many young people and families who have grown up round here and wish to stay in the area and these developments would have a much more positive response if they built the houses which were actually needed.

Councillor Joanna Greenway told Grange Now: “There was also concern about protecting wildlife, the extra traffic from the new houses and commercial buildings, the lack of safe foot and cycle routes in the area, and keeping the rural feel of the surroundings.” Grange Town Councillors attended to discuss the plans, and Grange Neighbourhood Plan representatives were there all day discussing

these issues with residents and officers from SLDC and County. The Grange Neighbourhood Plan team is preparing a response to the Development Brief consultation that highlights these concerns and puts forward some practical ways of addressing them. A Councillor Surgery was also held at Abbot Hall on Wednesday 20th January to enable residents to raise related issues.

èèAnyone with further comments and suggestions are welcome to email them to the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group (contactus@grangeoversands.net ) or South Lakeland Development Plans team (developmentplans@southlakeland.gov.uk), or use the district council's online response facility at applications. southlakeland.gov.uk/ldfconsultation. IN BRIEF More Good news for Grange residents Once again, Grange Town Council has announced that there will not be an increase in their portion of the council tax for 2016/2017. GTC will also receive extra funding due to the new homes which are now occupied around the town.

You’d be crazy not to want this job! A final decision has yet to be taken on the highly successful Prom Recreation Ground.

The Prom Youth Group handed over the day to day running of the facilities, including the new crazy golf course, for the coming season. A final decision is yet to be reached on whether an outside company will take over the day to day running or whether it will be run by people employed by the council. If you are interested in a seasonal position please see the Situations Vacant page.

Back on the Beat

Community Police Officer, Howard Firth returned to the beat on Monday 18th January. Welcome back Officer Firth. Please remember for all non emergencies please dial 101.

Electronic sign at fatal collision site

On Monday 18th January, Highways England started work to install an electronic sign on the A590 at the notorious Foulshaw Road turning. This is the site of a number of accidents including two fatal collisions. Grange Mum of two and former RAF pilot, Michelle Jurd lost her life here in 2009. Highways England's Project Manager, Peter Gee, has been reported as saying:"We have listened to local people's concerns about safety at the junction and once the sign is installed, drivers will get advance warning of slow vehicles joining the A590." Work is expected to be completed by 12th February.

What’s going to happen to the £50k for the lido? In the January edition of Grange Now we printed an article about the Lido receiving £50,00 from the Coastal Revival Fund. This donation is to be match funded by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) giving a total package of £100,000.

An article in Westmorland Gazette on 18th December stated:

It has been intimated by some by this money will be used to fund a consultation on the future of the building. “That’s already been done!” I hear you scream, and we agree. So, we sent the following email to David Sykes, Director of People and Places at SLDC.

The council will also hold a series of small scale events to try and regenerate interest Grade II listed site.

Dear Mr Sykes,

We understand that the Coastal Revival Fund has given SLDC £50K for Grange Lido which must be match-funded by SLDC. We also understand that a large consultation on what to do about the lido was undertaken approximately 3 years ago when Viv Tunnadine was Clerk. It was decided then that re-opening the lido as a fully functioning swimming pool was completely out of the question.

The process to find a suitable use for the lido will involve going back out to consultation with the community, and talking to Grange Town Council, Cumbria Tourism, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and Historic England.

The lido, which is located on Grange’s Edwardian promenade, enjoyed its heyday in the 1930s but was closed in 1993. A consultation was last held in 2013 where residents voted to have the structure reopened as an outdoor swimming pool.

Councillor Jonathan Brook, South Lakeland District Council’s portfolio holder for Innovation and Improvement, said: “The money from the Coastal Revival Fund is great news and will enable us to move forward on the project to restore the Lido site into a sustainable and economically viable community asset.

“We will use this money to develop a sustainable business case and vision for the site’s future.’’

"Surely, this money is not going to fund yet another consultation? - It’s already been done. Can you clarify the position please?" Many residents and councillors have expressed the desire to have the building made safe and to be opened simply as a public space, and as soon as possible. Several ideas have been put forward, including having part of all of it as as a sandpit for the children. Many believe that £100k is more than enough to achieve this modest result.

The majority of residents do realise that it will never be a pool again and we are happy to reiterate this but could you please confirm what the £100k is going to be spent on and when? Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

We hope to puplish a response from SLDC in the next issue. ED

Friends of Kents Bank Station and Foreshore The Friends of Kents Bank Station and Foreshore is a recently formed volunteer group who plan to enhance Kents Bank station and maintain the Kents Bank foreshore as a tranquil place where people can sit and enjoy views of Morecambe Bay and its wildlife.

The group has a committee, a constitution, a bank account and has established its priorities for the station and the foreshore. They are also seeking affiliation to the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) which is necessary for the group to move forward with plans for the station itself. The first objective of the group was to arrange for the benches on the station foreshore to be repaired. They are pleased to report that Councillor Joanna Greenway has obtained a commitment from Grange Town Council to have the benches refurbished in the Spring.

Walk organisers on the Trust’s website. Topics under review include the role of stewards, parking problems, toilet arrangements and the need for a clear access to the foreshore for emergency vehicles at all times.

In addition David Benham completed an initial botanical survey of the foreshore last October. He identified 98 plant species in the foreshore area and will add more species when he undertakes supplementary surveys this Spring and Summer. Mary Rossall and Joanna are liaising with the Guide over Sands Trust to update the information for Cross Bay

A longer term objective of the group is the provision of information boards on the foreshore including a labelled Morecambe Bay panoramic map and key local history and ecological information. They are also pleased to report that an electronic passenger information screen will be installed at Kents Bank station soon.

FKBS&F hope to obtain funding for specific projects from grants and from donations by local residents and well-wishers. They are also very appreciative of the help and advice that they have received from Jim Trotman, CRP Officer, Furness and Lakes Lines and from Network Rail.

èè The group has a small enthusiastic team of committed volunteers. If you would like to join them (membership is free), or make a donation, please contact the group's secretary Mary Rossall, mary.rossall@tiscali.co.uk or the treasurer, Margaret Carter margaret@carter433.plus.com

This year witnessed the 30th anniversary of the event which over the intervening years has raised £175,000 for charity and good causes. Held under the auspices of Kendal Amateur Boxing Club the audience witnessed 12 bouts of varying experience and skill. These included schoolboy, female youth, elite and heavyweight grades with one contest being for the North West Counties 75kg belt.

Boxing Chairman, Gary Rogerson commented, “The final figure raised will not be known until all the bills have been paid and the accounts drawn up but it is anticipated we will be near to or even surpass the record £6,000 raised last year.” The Chairman of the Furness and South Lakeland Freemasons Alan Jones added, “We are very grateful to the boxing committee, Kendal boxing club, the raffle tickets sellers, Cumbria Grand

Hotel and our very generous sponsors who ensure that each year we enjoy good food and excellent boxing whilst raising a considerable amount of money for worthy causes.” The actual amount raised will not be announced until the presentation evening later in the year when the proceeds of the evening are distributed to good causes.

fabulous new kitchen, it now has the welcoming, family atmosphere we wanted to achieve and is the heart of our home. Thank you for all your efforts, patience and good humour throughout.

Presenter, Fiona Bruce told Grange Now: “The magnificent setting of Holker Hall, surrounded by Lakeland hills and fells, is going to make Antiques Roadshow’s visit a truly memorable one. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone who comes, seeing what they bring and hearing their stories.”

via their Share your Story page on their website www.bbc.co.uk/ antiquesroadshow.

At each Roadshow, which is now in its 39th year, over 30 experts are on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and carboot sale finds. The Antiques Roadshow is a fantastic day out and we are delighted to say it is completely free with no tickets or pre-registration necessary.

Antiques Roadshow Executive Producer, Simon Shaw said: “The filming venues for 2016 are some of our most beautiful and historic yet. Our team of experts and Fiona love nothing better than hearing people’s stories and seeing what items they bring, so we hope as many people as possible come and enjoy what our visitors consistently tell us is a fantastic day out”. Grange Now are delighted to announce that we will be interviewing Simon in a forthcoming edition so if there is anything in particular Grange Now readers would like to know or if you have a question to ask him, please get in touch.

Gates open at 9.30 and the programme organisers told us that everyone who is in the queue by 4.30pm will be seen. They have also asked If people have an item with a particularly unusual story attached, or perhaps an interesting collection, then they can let them know in advance

For more information on attending and what to do please go to the website www.bbc. co.uk/antiquesroadshow, or email:antiques.roadshow@ bbc.co.uk or write to AntiquesRoadshow, BBC Broadcasting House, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR.

The Antiques Roadshow is coming to town. On Wednesday 6th July, Holker Hall will play host to the show which attracts an average of 5.9 million viewers every week.

We will be publishing a report on all the feedback in the next few weeks -including any from the January display in the Library. So thanks again to all those who participated.

The clear winner for comments was the future of the Lido. You had plenty to say about this. We will be sending your ideas and suggestions to Grange Town Council for consideration at their next meeting on 8 February.

Some of the most frequent comments: • more affordable housing • more housing to rent • one way system for traffic • we need a shop selling office and computer supplies • address flooding issues • improve bus services Grange Now has contacted SLDC about the recent £50k funding, See page 4

THIS TIME 25 YEARS AGO

Looking back 25 years it seems that many stories are quite similar to those of today. This snapshot is taken from the Grange and District Memorandum exactly 25 years ago. Did you know that in

Thursday, 1st February

August this year we will be publishing issue number 300 of Grange Now and that we are approaching our own 25th anniversary in September this year. If you have any memories or stories from 25 years ago or of how Grange Now has impacted

on your life or a group you represent, then please send it in. We will be running a ‘looking back over 25 years in Grange Now’ feature in the September edition. There must be a wealth of stories and anecdotes out there, just waiting to be shared.

Since retiring from the teaching profession Dave Rogers has become involved with the Tallship Youth Trust, a charity dedicated to giving both young and old the experience of coastal and deep sea sailing .

Great opportunity ahoy!

Whilst living in Herefordshire he used his teaching contacts to show schoolchildren just how exciting a week on a tall ship could be, even for those who have never set foot on a boat! Now he has come to live in Grange he would like to continue this venture and he is keen to give local youngsters the chance to get aboard, get aloft and get sailing!

On April 3rd, he will be sailing on the Tallship Stavros S Niarchos Stavros, sailing from Greenock and returning there after six nights at sea. He will be working with 10 other adults, all of whom are experienced sailors and in five cases fully qualified naval officers. They will spend the week teaching 48 12-15 year old girls and boys how to sail a square rigger. The youngsters will take part in all aspects

of sailing; they will helm, set sails by climbing aloft, keep watch and pull ropes! Food, specialist clothing and warm comfy beds are provided (as are showers and flush toilets) and when not busy sailing the youngsters get involved in all sorts of fun activities, including trips ashore etc. At the moment there are plenty of spaces for boys and girls, who need no experience,

no specialist equipment and nothing more than a willingness to work hard in a team of 16 come rain or shine and have fun! The best advert for the trip would be to go to the tall ships website, www.tallships.org or look at the link www.absolute herefordshire.co.uk and find issue Sept 2014 pages 26/27 where you will find an article written after one of the trips!

èè Further opportunities exist for all ages and further information can be found by calling Dave Rogers, Youth Mentor, on 07776 395 070. Youngsters can also apply for help with the funding if required!

County Matters

The following issues have arisen at Grange Library: There has been a series of ad hoc closures due to a shortage of staffing. One member of staff has been on long term sick leave to March 2016. Closures are very likely to be a problem until opening hours are resolved on a long term basis. I want to see if we can anticipate these better and improve advance communication to library users. The recent restructure of community services means that a number of libraries, including Grange, will go to single staffing. This alone will impact on opening hours with the need to

close for lunch between 1 and 2pm. to enable staff to take their break. The Broadband connection to the library has not functioned reliably in recent times and efforts to resolve this are ongoing. We are keen to re-instate the self-scanning machine and ensure that library users are able to make better use of the computers and tablets. A number of volunteers have expressed an interest in supporting Grange Library. The Library Service is in contact with them and will be arranging a meeting to launch volunteer activities at Grange Library. This meeting will take place after the broadband and ICT issues have been resolved. If anyone wishes to be a volunteer helper at Grange Library please

contact our County Engagement Officer Carol Last on 01539 713180 or e-mail coral.last@cumbria.gov.uk As we all know there has been widespread disruption in Cumbria because of the severe weather over the past few months and hopefully we are getting back to normal. I would like to express my thanks to all the agencies and their staff for their hard work and efforts in helping our residents over this difficult period. If anyone needs or knows of anyone that still is in need of help and assistance please access the County Council website at www.cumbria.gov. uk/floods2015 for further help. Regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING DAY

The Rotary Club of Grange over Sands

23rd February at the Netherwood Hotel.

Sessions at 10am to noon, and 1pm to 3pm Booking is essential

Phone the Netherwood on 32552 to reserve your FREE place.

MP welcomes ‘Outstanding’ rating for GP practice

Would you know how to use a defibrillator? Grange and the surrounding area now has defibrillators sited around the area but when it came down to it, would you know how to use one? If not, book yourself onto The Rotary Club of Grange over Sands Defibrillator Training Day. The training, which is completely free of charge, will take place on 23rd

February at the Netherwood Hotel. There is a morning session between 10am to noon, and a further session in the afternoon 1pm to 3pm. Booking is essential, so please ring the Netherwood on 32552 to reserve your place. Anyone who is interested in learning how to use this lifesaving equipment is welcome.

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that a local GP practice has been rated ‘outstanding’.

The Care Quality Commission has published its latest assessment of Nutwood Medical Practice in Grange-Over-Sands, giving it an overall rating of ‘outstanding’.

The practice scored particularly highly for providing services that were ‘effective’ and ‘caring’, whilst “feedback from patients was continually positive about the way that staff treated people”.

Volunteering that works for you?

Age UK South Lakeland is a local charity working with older people to help them retain their independence and exercise real choice in their lives.

There are lots of roles across the organisation and there’s sure to be one to suit you: helping out at one of our drop

in sessions or coffee mornings in the area; baking cakes for events or helping to run cooking classes for men.

Our new Superstore in Grange is keen to involve more people. You can be flexible in your volunteering hours and commit to the times which suit you and your responsibilities.

Sue McMillan, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice in the North, described the Practice as “a great example of what outstanding care looks like.”

Volunteering makes a huge difference for other people. Most volunteers find it makes a huge difference for them as well, so why not give it a try? For more information and an informal chat please call 01539 728118 or email crobinson@ ageuksouthlakeland.org.uk

The surgery, operating at The Health Centre on Kents Bank Road in Grange-over-Sands, serves approximately 4,700 patients.

Tim said: “This is fantastic news for local people that use this GP Practice. The outstanding rating in the ‘caring’ category is particularly important, and it is testament to the commitment and attention shown by the doctors and nurses. My thanks go to all the staff who have helped to provide such an excellent standard of care for their patients.”

Tim’s column

I have been exchanging letters with the Minister for “Local Growth and the Northern Powerhouse” (I kid you not, he is paid over £90,000 a year to do this job), who is responsible for decisions over funding for the pumps in the Lyth Valley. As many of you will know the Environment Agency has announced that they will stop paying for the running of these pumps in June, claiming that as they are there to drain agricultural land not to prevent flooding this is not an area of their responsibility and so in this era of Osborne funding cuts they are having to stop funding them. The point I have been making to the minister is that although it is true that the original reason why the pumps were brought in was to drain farm land, that is not their purpose now. As any of you who tried to drive from Grange to Kendal after Storm Desmond will know, the road across the Lyth Valley was virtually impassable. I dread to think what it would have been like if we had not had the pumps working to remove water. The purpose of the pumps has changed from being agricultural drainage to being one of flood prevention for the communities in the Lyth Valley and to keep the roads open. I have asked him to reconsider his decision not withdraw the funding of the pumps and recognise this change in function. The Government claims to be keen to provide lots of money for flood relief, this is a great test of how serious they are. The aftermath of the flooding before Christmas has been taking a lot of my time. My entire office has been working flat out to help as much as we can with finding homes for people who were flooded or

sorting out insurance problems or pressing the Government to work harder on re-opening roads and bridges, the list goes on. One success I have had is in persuading the Government to provide funding for a campaign to make people aware that Cumbria is open for business and that they should plan to visit us for a great holiday sometime soon. However, I have yet to persuade David Cameron that the Government should apply for the EU funding that is in place to help countries facing the challenges that we have been facing as a result of the flooding. Given that there are millions of pounds in Brussels just waiting for us to ask for them, the fact that the Government is failing to apply for them for what I can only think are political reasons is very very frustrating. If you would like to support my call for them to apply just search on “Tim Farron Flood Funding Petition” and sign up. Beyond flooding I have been pressing the Government to make a move on providing a radio therapy unit at Westmorland General Hospital. The responses I have received to date have sadly demonstrated the rather chaotic and uncaring way that this Government seems to operate. But I will keep up the pressure. If I can help you with anything, flood related or not, please do get in touch. Email me at tim@ timfarron.co.uk Thanks for your support, Tim

Grange now | FEBRUARY 2016 - Next deadline 19th FEBRUARY

Thanks to Grange Now deliverers

Foodbank - please donate! The next foodbank collection will take place on Sunday 7th February, in the Meeting Room of St Paul’s Church, Grange between 1-3pm.

Did you know that a team of almost 40 local people deliver Grange Now each month. From young teenagers to retired residents, we are very grateful to each and every one of them.

Foodbank helps those in crisis by providing a minimum of three days non-perishable emergency food to local people. They work in partnership with frontline care professionals to identify those people in need. Items particularly needed at the moment are: sugar (500g or 1kg) and long-life milk but other items on the list include:

Grange Now comes back from the printer usually on the last Wednesday of the month. That afternoon, the Grange Now team sort out the rounds so everyone has the right number of copies.

The following morning there is a fabulous system of getting the papers out to all the deliverers who in turn then deliver out to the homes on their round. Crucial in all this is Tom Ross from Grange who physically drops off many of the rounds to the deliverers - thank you Tom. It is all credit to the deliverers that we get very few people commenting that they have not received their copy. It happens, but not often.

UHT fruit juice, tea bags, tinned meat, tinned fish, tinned fruit and vegetables, tinned tomatoes, tinned sponge pudding, custard (tinned or UHT), pasta sauce and instant mash potato. Carrier bags are also always needed.

Delivering Grange Now is suitable for all ages.

For the most part our deliverers go out to every home within 2-3 days of receiving their round. For many it’s a chance to get some fresh air, take some exercise and contribute to the local community. It’s also a way to earn a bit of extra money which is certainly appreciated. For younger deliverers it’s

often their first job and a good introduction to the working world. We would just like to say thank you to the Grange Now deliverers for doing a terrific job. If you would like to become a deliverer why not get in touch. Please call Grange Now on 015395 35453 or email info@ grangenow.co.uk

Luke 'bursts' onto the DJ scene Three years ago, Luke Plevin ended up in Furness General Hospital with a burst appendix. He spent a week in hospital recovering from the appendectomy and was outraged to find that the cost of buying a TV card was £15 per day.

Thanks to an uncle who lives in the Middle East, Luke managed to get an invite to the International Radio Festival in Zurich in September 2014. Luke picks up the story: “I was delighted just to be invited but I decided to send a few cheeky emails and I managed to get a one-hour programme slot at the Festival which meant I was

March off with a bargain On March the 9th to be exact. Bag yourself a bargain by attending the ‘Colours’ fundraising fashion show in Cartmel Village Hall.

There will also be a raffle which will include a £50 clothing voucher to spend on the night. Come and enjoy a fantastic night of shopping and entertainment whilst supporting the NSPCC.

Well done, the Voakes

Last year, Jeremy and Mandy Voakes were delighted when the Christmas lights at their home, Trevenna, made £1800 for the NSPCC.

He decided instead to tune into the hospital radio channel, Radio Lonsdale, and it was a decision that changed the course of his life. As soon as he was discharged Luke went down to where the programme is ‘recorded’ and spoke to Pete Sexton, who was to become Luke’s mentor, and there his radio DJ career began.

Now aged 21, Luke, who’s Gran lives in Grange, is about to complete his final year at Staffordshire University where has been doing a degree in radio production. Luke told Grange Now: “I absolutely love radio and I can’t thank Radio Lonsdale enough." Luke graduates from university on 14th July 2016 and he’s looking for a job!

If you can help, it will be greatly appreciated.

broadcasting worldwide which was quite something. I also met Tony Prince from Radio Caroline which was amazing.”

Luke returned to Radio Lonsdale on 22nd December to present a show as part of the station’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Pete Sexton, Programme Controller for the station told Grange Now: “We celebrated our golden anniversary by inviting past members to return and present programmes throughout the day from 10am to 10pm. Those returning included Darren Milby (now at “The Bay”), Stephen Dixon (now at “Sky News”), Ron Duxbury and Chris Clouter (negotiated inclusion of

radio studios in plans for FGH), Peter Last (the other member who refused to let the station disappear), Steve Thompson and James Edmond (past Treasurer and Studio Manager), Luke Plevin, Lottie Howsley and Becki Took (the girls returned as ladies), Bill Clark (Freelance Professional Radio Presenter) and Dave Chubb (Local Personality and MC). The history of the station was reflected in displays in the main hospital reception recalling the many memorable events Radio Lonsdale has been involved with over the years. Several local companies donated gifts and prizes for the day and I am very grateful to them.

Radio Lonsdale is always in need of new members – to find out more visit www.radio-lonsdale. co.uk and follow the ‘getting involved’ link.

In 2015, thanks to everyone who has supported them, they have doubled that by taking an enormous £3715. Jeremy told Grange Now: "We would like to say a huge Thank You to everyone that helped to spread the word and promote the lights, and of course to everyone that donated. We have never had the weather so bad for both putting them up and keeping them going all month but the amount raised makes it all worthwhile.

Now we just have to start taking them down and pack away which usually takes until about April! I don’t know how long we will keep doing the display but I’m pleased to say plans are already underway for next year!"

FOOD & DRINK

Congratulations to Low Sizergh

The Food of Love Home cooked Steak and Chips?

It’s a question that divides us; is it best to stay in or go out on the 14th February? Personally I prefer to stay in; the thought of paying inflated restaurant prices and being surrounded by 49 other couples all judging each other or being overly affectionate is not my idea of a good evening out! But you might disagree. I asked around and discovered that feelings are mixed, even within the Higginsons staff room.

Mark (or Creamy as he’s better known), thinks it is definitely better to go out “It feels like you’re making an occasion of it then, if you’re doing something”. Nigel’s response was simple “It’s cheaper to stay in. Mind you, by the time you’ve bought the champagne and chocolates there’s probably not much in it”. And according to Karine from the Takeout, “Valentines is overrated. When you go out there’s too much pressure and no ambience. It’s much more relaxed at home, you can sit and eat in your PJ’s in front of the fire”. I’m with Karine. I think it’s more romantic to treat someone special to a home cooked meal! Well whether you agree with me or not, here’s our proposal:

Two Dry Aged Sirloin Steaks

with a FREE Peppercorn / Mushroom Sauce for £12

…cooked as you like them, with a side of home-made chunky chips and some roasted seasonal vegetables. Plus, a nice bottle of robust red wine or two!

Here are our Top Tips for cooking your Sirloin Steaks to perfection: nn Bring the steaks to room temperature before cooking nn Season the steaks, then place them in a very hot pan nn Fry the steaks on each side depending on how you like them cooked nn (Rare: Sear for 1½ mins each side, Medium/ Rare: Sear for 2-2 ½ mins on each side, Medium: Sear for 3 mins each side, Medium/ Well: Sear for 4 mins on each side, Well Done: Sear for 5 mins on each side) nn Leave to rest for a couple of minutes before serving onto warm plates

Between 8th-13th February, look out for our other Valentine’s Special Offers in store!

Along with five other local businesses, Low Sizergh have been shortlisted for the Family Business of the Year Awards which will be announced at the Mayfair Hotel, London, on June 2. Low Sizergh are a regular contributor to Grange Now on this food and drink page and I can honestly say are also a great venue for a cooked breakfast. The site is also home to the Growing Well project which is a fabulous social enterprise. They now employ around 50 local people and deal with around 40 suppliers from the local area.

Jerusalem artichokes (not to be confused with globe artichokes) belong to the sunflower family and it’s the plant’s small knobbly underground tubers that are sweetly succulent and compatible with many flavours. Chef Drew has created the following recipe, which can be enjoyed as a side dish or as a light and tasty salad. Ingredients

Home Grown: Food Champions of England’s Northwest, Deirdre Morley p.355 John Park began farming at the site, located just off the A591, in 1980 and they set-up the farm shop and cafe in 1991. Alison Park, who runs Low Sizergh Barn with her mother and father, Marjorie and John, her brother Richard and her 18-year-old nephew Matthew, called the nomination 'a really lovely surprise'. Best of luck to Low Sizergh and the other 5 local businesses in the final judging for the Family Business of the Year..

CHURCH NEWS

St Paul’s

Very many thanks must go to both organisers and exhibitors and to all who contributed to the success of the Grange Christmas Tree Festival, held once again at St Paul’s. In spite of the dire weather, the festival attracted in the region of 1300 visitors and donations amounting to £1000 were received and equally divided between St Mary’s Hospice and Bay Search & Rescue.

Churches Together February sees the start of of the Churches Together Lent Study Groups.

You will be very welcome at any of these Gatherings. Details of exact dates, venues etc. are in each Church.

United Reformed Church

Happy New Year! One month in and we are beginning to see signs of winter as well as signs of spring as the bulbs are shooting up. Various regular events are cropping up again. On February 12th the URC is hosting the first of this year’s Lent Lunches

Many people have enquired about the wooden framework constructed in front of St Paul's. The architect, in conjunction with the structural engineer, has erected this to indicate the position of the terracing up to the new patio area and pathway which will run from the rear car park to the front entrance of the church. We look forward to the first phase of the reordering of the Parish Church to get underway. Owing to the popularity of our lunchtime concerts, St Paul’s

Director of Music, Charles Edmondson, has announced that he will be giving four concerts in church this year. The first concert will be in April and further details will appear next month.

Some groups will be looking at the Psalms, at problems which these ancient writings address but are still in the world today.

A look at stories helping us discover what really matters in our busy lives today. In a world so full of violence, people seeking refuge, health issues and many more problems, we all need help in Making Room for what really matters.

Others will be using the New Testament under the general title of'Making Room.'

from 12noon –1.15pm. You are very welcome at any of these events which are held at different churches on Fridays throughout Lent. Donations are collected for charity. Also details are now available on the Notice boards of the Churches of the Lent courses run by Churches Together. The one at the URC is being held

All are welcome to join us at St Paul’s for Compline (Night Service) which will be held at 8.30pm every Tuesday during Lent beginning the 16th February. This traditional service marks the completion of the day and is a service of quietness and reflection.

on Thursday mornings at 10am. You may have heard that our hall was suffering from damp. It has now been stabilised and is back in use while we decide what long-term repairs are needed. All users can now return to normal. Please keep warm and safe during the wintry weather!

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Parish Having missed the deadline for the December issue of “Grange Now” I shall have to economise as much as possible on words this month. With Christmas now in the past, may I hope that you enjoyed all the festivities without falling victim to the excesses and I should also like to wish readers “A Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year”.

The Advent service in early December fell victim to the weather; not the ideal preparation for Christmas – the birth of Christ. The Christmas Charity Concert, however, was a great success. Carols and Christmas songs led by “The Lourdes Singers”, readings both topical and amusing and an audience roughly ¾ filling the church raised over £400, all of which is being donated to charity (full details next issue). Very many thanks to all involved. The Christmas masses were well attended and the illuminated crib attracted the usual attention and complimentary remarks. (Will it lead to an increase in the congregation, I wonder?).

The New Year has begun well with the festivals of the Holy Family, The Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord being suitably celebrated and The Year of Mercy, instigated in early December by Pope Francis, continuing to be marked each Tuesday morning when the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is recited after morning Mass. Continuing with matters liturgical, by the time you read this it will only be about two weeks to the beginning of Lent (Easter is so early this year that Easter eggs have been in the shops since Boxing Day!!) Regarding social matters, the annual Parish Lunch, which is usually at the beginning of February, will take place sometime after Easter. Details of other social events will be announced shortly. There are other parish matters in the pipeline – more news hopefully next month.

Whatever you do and wherever you go in these early days of 2016, may the Good Lord go with you. PS. Does expecting the unexpected make the unexpected become the expected?

News from Nutwood Medical Practice CQC rates the Practice as Outstanding! The Care Quality Commission, the Health Service regulator, carried out a routine inspection of the practice in August 2015. Nutwood now joins a small number of practices across the country to receive an outstanding rating for the quality of care it provides for patients. This is down to the dedication and hard work by the fantastic team we have in place. We are thrilled to receive this feedback.

Sue McMillan, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice in the North, said:

"We found that Nutwood Medical Practice is providing an outstanding service for the people in this part of Cumbria. “We were particularly impressed with the practice’s work to develop innovative new ways of supporting older patients and people with long term conditions. As well as the commitment of all staff to continuously seek improved outcomes for local people. “The practice was clearly well thought of by its patients. We found Nutwood Medical Practice was performing highly in patient surveys about the care and treatment it provided, and people we spoke to said they were treated with respect, dignity and compassion.”

A number of areas were highlighted in the report including:

●● Feedback about the practice was consistently high; inspectors received several recommendations from patients and survey results showed the practice was performing highly.

●● The practice had a robust system of performing clinical audits, monitoring and recording patient care, treatment and outcomes. The practice reflected on the information on a regular basis, to better improve patient outcomes. One such audit showed patients were growing more confident in managing their own health. ●● Staff worked well together and showed a strong commitment to developing better ways of supporting older patients and those with long term conditions. These included working with other local healthcare organisations to help provide additional care services in the community. ●● The practice had received certificates of excellence in 2014 and 2015 for their commitment to meeting the needs of carers in the South Lakeland area. The work the practice had done in partnership with Age UK, focusing on older patients and those with long term conditions was also highlighted as an example of notable practice.

Comings and Goings! We will be very sad to say goodbye to Dr Jane Irwin as she retires in early March. Dr Irwin has been working in the practice for over 30 years and will be a very difficult act to follow! She will be greatly missed both by patients and colleagues. As she leaves we will be joined by Dr Gemma Helme, who at present is working in Carlisle, having trained as a GP in west Cumbria. Dr Helme will be working with us for two days a week and is delighted to be coming to Grange.

‘Bet your bottom dollar’ this will be a good show Grange Amateur Operatic Society are near to completion of their Spring show, ‘Annie’. With 13 of the district’s young girls (age range 7-14) acting and singing their hearts out the show is bound to be a hit as the story and the music are tremendous.

The show’s heroine, ‘Annie’ beautifully played by Molly Cowley (a staunch member of the panto team having played the genie in Aladdin and the Wicked Witch in Sleeping Beauty plus many other roles) who portrays the youngster, left on her own by her parents as a baby, searching for them after leaving the cruel dictatorship of Miss Hannigan (Samantha Grundy) in the New York orphanage. Cartmel racecourse attract big names

John is Status Quo's original drummer from the early days in 1962 and for twenty years of hits and tours until 1981; he then appeared on both sellout Quo Frantic Four Reunion Tours in 2013 and 2014. He now plays with his own 4-piece band, recreating the Quo sounds from the early years. John will be coming to Grange on Saturday 26th March to The Victoria Hall.Local marketing agent and Lakes Live Music promoter Helen Dent, said 'We had such a great night on 27th December with T-Rex, I decided

to call John to see if he was up for an Easter show', John loves the area and the timing fell nicely with his tour dates. He will be coming up for two Easter performances. The first in Grange followed by Broughton in Furness on Easter Sunday. T-Rex will also be back for New Years Eve 2016, with a buffet supper and glam disco party! Fancy dress optional! Progression Solicitors will be sponsoring the events.Tickets available at The Victoria Hall or call Helen for more information on 07719186145.

May bank holiday weekend is usually a big event at Cartmel Racecourse, but it just got bigger. There’s not one but two big names acts due to play but rather than just tell you, Cartmel Racecourse Managing Director, Jonathan Garratt has kindly agreed to let us re-print part of his blog (he tells it much better).

Jools Holland and the Three Pence Profit ... I’m determined to expand my cultural horizons, particularly when it comes to popular music. I realised that I was out of sync with mainstream opinion when my first suggestion for a post-racing concert artist was dismissed without hesitation. Apparently The Wombles were unlikely to be available anyway. We're very lucky that we managed to secure Simply Red instead, for Saturday 28th May, although I doubt Mick will stay behind to pick up the litter. Now our friends at Cuffe and Taylor have organised a second concert - for the day after Simply Red on Sunday 29th May, when we don’t have any races - although there’ll be lots of people here on the Cartmel peninsula, preparing for the traditional Bank Holiday Monday race-meeting which goes ahead as normal. They gave me some clues and asked me to guess who the artist might be… 'Think classy jazz musician,’ they said. ‘Nat King Cole?’ I asked. Now I wish I hadn’t said that because apparently Nat hasn’t been available for fifty years. Nor was it Frank Sinatra: unavailable for at least fifteen years. I probably shouldn’t go on… Suffice to say that I needed a lot more clues.

‘He shares his name with a European nation,’ they said. ‘Uncle Bulgaria?’ I suggested hopefully. ‘This is like Pulling Mussels from a Shell,’ they said. ‘You’re really Up the Junction!’ Well I got it then… Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra will be topping the bill on the day betweenrace-days at Cartmel, with Ruby Turner and Louise Marshall providing guest vocals. The course will be open from 3.00pm and tickets are available now, at a price of £35 each, from www.ticketline.co.uk. Finally, and perhaps most importantly of all: my third resolution is to tip many more winners in 2016. Having analysed the statistics from 2015, I can confirm that if you had placed a £1 win bet on all of the weekly selections in this blog, you'd have lost a grand total of £14.22 over the year. Having made a profit of £14.25 in 2014, that means that we're still 3 pence ahead over the last two years. Let's renew the battle with Howard’s Legacy at Kempton Park on Saturday. 'Why?' I hear you ask. It’s... Cool for Cats. You can read more of Jonathan’s post at: cartmelracecourse.blogspot.co.uk

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Wild about Grange? - Get involved. There is a wealth of wildlife in and around our town. We have a nature reserve and several others in the area, such as Humphrey head and Foulshaw moss with breeding Ospreys. Our town is also partly surrounded by Ancient woodlands and coast, together important for migratory birds. But do we know where other wild places are in Grange and what wildlife they support? A social media site has been set up to help with this and to get the local community involved. Anyone can join and be part of it and it is hope with your help, we can share all

our wildlife experiences, whether you are a dog walker, gardener, fisherman or belong to an outdoor club, group, school or business. Over time, this may show how our wildlife and the wider environment of Grange is doing, where things are, is it changing and why? So if you are interested in the wildlife of Grange, please join our group and share what you see or what you are doing in our wild places. Visit Facebook: Wild about Grange The photo shows a Wax cap fungi, a few sites in Grange have them, but Brown Robin’s are a site of national importance. Tony Saunders. Reserve Manager.

In light of all the rain and floods over the new year, Year 6 pupils at Cartmel Primary School have created some poetry based on recent experiences. We thought we’d take this opportunity to share some with you and wish everyone affected by the flooding an improved start to 2016.

including Skokholm Island in Pembrokeshire, Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, and, most recently, helped conduct a seabird survey on the remote St Kilda Isles, 80 miles off coast of west Scotland.

The warden post is thanks to funding from the WREN Biodiversity Action Fund which was secured by Morecambe Bay Partnership and Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and includes a raft of habitat improvement works at nature reserves in the Furness area. Sarah, who lives on site in the warden’s cottage, is responsible for caring for the wildlife habitats, supporting the many excellent existing volunteers and ensuring visitors to the nature reserve get the most out of their visit. Sarah says: “I’m over the moon to be living and working in such a stunning

part of the world, and looking forward to continuing my predecessor’s excellent work. In my first two weeks here we’ve already had the island’s first ever seal pups, so I cannot wait to see what the next few years will bring us!” Previously Sarah has worked on several islands and nature reserves,

As well as managing South Walney Nature Reserve the new warden will be working on habitat improvements at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Foulney Island Nature Reserve and Natural England’s North Walney National Nature Reserve. At South Walney this will fund scrape creation for birds, habitat restoration to create flower-rich dune grassland and the development of new infrastructure to manage grazing. Works will also allow for a better visitor experience near the nature reserve’s entrance. On Foulney Island, it is hoped that breeding areas can be extended for terns and other birds away from the ravages of the tide.

SCHOOL REPORTS

At the start of this month, we embarked on our annual ski trip to the Austrian Alps. We undertook a ski course in the Alpendorf region in the Amade Valley. After a start to a ski season bereft of snow, due to high temperatures across Europe, the snow arrived just in time to present all of us with perfect alpine conditions. Many pupils were being assessed for their GCSE physical education course and the excellent conditions presented a perfect opportunity, with well-groomed pistes and bright sunshine. Those new to skiing were doing red runs by the end of the week whilst the advanced group skied from region to region each day. They covered dozens of kilometres of piste. Apres ski activities included swimming in Wagrain, dancing

The rigorous full-day inspection looked at the effect of the school’s ethos as a Church of England school, on its children and all areas of its work. The report sees Lindale upgraded from a previous rating of ‘Good’, following hard work from pupils, staff and parents. The SIAMS report said: “The school, through its distinctive character, is outstanding

It noted that perseverance was the value that the children were most keen to include. Lindale’s inspector praised the high levels of progress that children consistently make in their learning across all year groups, and added that “Pupils exhibit a genuine care for others.” There was also admiration of

The report concluded: “The school demonstrates its strong Christian character in the way it supports all pupils’ needs regardless of their ability or background… values permeate the daily life of the school and these have a positive effect on relationships across the school community.” Lindale CE Primary School Headteacher Sarah Coleman said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the results of this inspection.”

The report revealed that, “The wellqualified and skilled staff team provide a stimulating, well organised and calm environment where opportunities for the children to develop their eye-hand coordination are immense.” The inspector observed that, “Staff build on children’s mathematical skills in numerous ways and that children develop good pencil control and have many opportunities to foster their writing skills.” She noted, “The good levels of care which support children’s emotional and physical well-being and that younger and older children play well alongside each other and learn to respect each other’s space, take turns and care for one another.” She also mentioned that, “Staff are highly effective at supporting children to acquire the skills needed for school by encouraging the children to be independent learners, develop self-confidence and become selfassured.” For further information contact Melanie Knight on: 015395 35629 or 07971 828797.

Happy New Year from Grange CE Primary School! It has been a busy start to the year for our Year 1 class as they attended a Multi skills session at Cartmel Priory school as well as their good work assembly taking place in the first weeks back. Children, staff and parents were very impressed with all their hard work! The school will be involved with Fairtrade Fortnight (29 Feb – 13 March) and this year the theme is Breakfast. Children will be invited to come for breakfast sampling food from around the world. This is being supported by grants from the Co-operative, the Town Council and Chamber of Trade along with the support of Tracy Hathorn (Breakfast Club leader). Our

School Choir has started again this term and were very active over the Christmas period performing at the Christmas Tree Festival, for Age UK at the Netherwood and also at Westerley Care Home. The School Band also performed locally for the Blind Society at Abbot Hall and again at the Netherwood Hotel. Our new school library is nearing completion and we hope to be able to open it officially in the coming weeks.

Along with those from other schools on the peninsula, a group of our Year 5 and 6 children recently took part in the South Lakeland district trials for cross country running. We were all thrilled to find out that two of our runners have made it through to the county trials! Most importantly, all those who entered enjoyed the experience and came back to school proud of what they had achieved. Coming up this term, on the 10th February we are to hold Co-operative Learning Day. All the activities are focussing on learning about ‘those who help us’, and so far we are excited to confirm that we will be joined by representatives from Mountain Rescue, Guide Dogs, Police Dogs, First Responders and the Youth Club. We are to celebrate all the hard work these organisations do in our local community, especially in light of the recent floods. We can’t wait to meet our visitors on what will be a very special day for all our children!

Cartmel Primary

The build-up to the festive season at Cartmel CE Primary was busy as usual; with a well-attended Nativity! Year 5 and 6 classes produced ‘Cinderella Rockerfella’; which truly showed the confidence and ability of our young people. We have exciting new ventures at Cartmel for 2016. Our ICT is taking a full upgrade and we will be further developing our computer suite and providing access to a broader range of software to support our children’s learning across the whole curriculum. We are also working with the Cartmel in Bloom Society to enhance our outdoor area; with plans for a Storyteller and Meditation Garden. The children will also be going out into the community litter picking later in February; working to take care of our beautiful village environment

for both residents and visitors alike – a two way initiative to encourage the children to be involved in the community and give the community the opportunity to be involved in school life! Our Worship Teams are now up and running; the first one exploring the theme of Justice in an opening assembly with Reverend Nick from The Priory Church. We have also resumed our ‘Bible and Me’ Club, which is just one of a number of clubs this half-term including; Singing, Multi-Skills and Football.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER

O F

Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Winter Newsletter. The last few months have been a stream of fun with lots of visits from entertainers and interesting activities taking place. October

PR O

Early October was warm and sunny and we took advantage to take a few residents and family members out for afternoon tea at the Netherwood Hotel. They put on a great spread.

November

The month began with our annual bonfire night and fireworks party, surrounded by friends and family with lots of hot food and cakes. Everyone loved the lanterns the residents made.

We also went on an outing to Grange Pond to feed the ducks and then onto the Hazelmere CafĂŠ. It may have been wet for the rest of the month, but we made the most of it with a wide range of arts and crafts, including making lots of different Halloween decorations, carving pumpkins, creating lanterns for Bonfire Night and of course making a Guy Fawkes. Some of the residents also went out to Cartmel Village Hall for a Singing for the Brain Concert. We had vintage music singer Becki Fishwick visiting at the end of the month. She is very talented and we definitely want to see her again.

Watching the fireworks after burning the Guy We also had a visit early in the month from Bon Marche resulting in an afternoon of clothing shopping and lots of good ideas for Christmas presents. The residents started a whole series of craftwork for Christmas that would take 2 months to complete: a huge banner, wreaths, homemade decorations, baubles and Christmas trees.

Richard Bromley, our visiting pianist returned and filled The Old Vicarage with music. We had a play followed by afternoon tea from the Hazelmere Cafe put on by Dignity in Dementia. Vintage music singer, Becki Fishwick singing to a full audience. We had a traditional fish and chips lunch during the month, with food from the local 'chippy'. Nothing beats fish and chips eaten out of paper! 22

December

We had an action packed month. The residents continued making all the Christmas ornaments and crafts, put up two trees, decorated them and filled the whole Old Vicarage with all their craftwork. Folksy theatre came and performed songs and jokes that made us all laugh. Its not Christmas without carols and several residents went to Flookburgh Church for a beautiful service. The singing group, Playing for Fun, came to The Old Vicarage and entertained us with a brilliant concert. The children from Allithwaite Montessori came and performed their Christmas play. They were adorable and the residents loved it. We went out and visited the Christmas lights at Jeremy Voakes' house near Cark. It was amazing. Every year there are more and more lights. We had our Residents’ Christmas party with entertainment by John Mario and a huge buffet. It was the best ever with residents, relatives and guest all dancing. Christmas Day came and so did Santa with huge bags of presents. We had a 3 course Christmas Meal with lots of wine and sherry.

Some of the residents went out at the end of the month to Cartmel Priory School for a performance of The Sound of Music. It was a great concert. On top of all those concerts, our volunteer choir, Vicarage Voices, kept us going over the wet months with a stream of songs and music.

Our Plans for 2016 We've had a great year in 2015 and we want 2016 to be even better, starting with more activities, and outings. We will be celebrating events such as Burns Night, Chinese New Year and Shakespeare Day.

We aim to have more activities and outings with individual residents, as not everyone likes doing the same things. Its about finding out what our residents like to do and helping them with it.

Volunteers wanted We are looking for people to help us with activities. Our residents love company – if you can chat, knit, like baking, play games or cards we would love to see you. Young or old, male or female, all are welcome. And if you have a pet hamster, dog or horse – well, animals are always popular visitors.

Forthcoming Events in February Origami with Stephen Watson

Outing to Laurel & Hardy Museum

Outing to Beetham Nursery

We have a new website:

Oldvicaragecare.net We also have facebook and youtube pages, where we will be uploading photos and videos for families and friends to view as well as information about upcoming events.

Improving our gardens We are looking for a permanent wooden gazebo / pergola, along with wooden benches and garden furniture – so if you have something suitable please contact us.

During December the moat surrounding the bandstand in Park Road Gardens was leaking, so with the support of South Lakeland District Council and Norfolk Property Services, renovation work has been taking place. It is hoped to replace the water lilies in the Spring.

The area under the roadside hedge has been re-turfed, several dead trees and dangerous branches have also been removed. It is hoped that the pathway alongside the old

new home we started receiving welcoming cards from our new neighbours and a bouquet from the estate agents, Hackney and Leigh. I can't tell you what a difference this makes when moving not just a home but totally relocating. I have signed up for the monthly newsletter but still like to receive the paper version so we can keep it for easy reference. You do a brilliant job - thank you. Maureen Neathway Thanks Maureen and Rob, and welcome to the area - Ed nursery at Berners Car Park from Thornfield Road will be opened up again to connect with the new path allowing access to the Clare Lane Bridge.

It has been confirmed recently that SLDC will be continuing to supply food for the Ornamental Gardens water fowl. On the promenade three replacement information boards have been installed by Signworks funded by grants from Cumbria County Council and SLDC Councillor’s allowance to fulfil the action in the Community Led Plan. Cllr. Ron Shapland

Dear Editor,

I was delighted, when reading about ‘Boris’, to find out his mate is ‘Doris’. It sounds a perfect match and such a lovely name. Of course, I am biased. Good Luck Boris and Doris. Doris Winter Kents Bank.

I would like to make a plea to any doctors, nurses, dentists, dental nurses, optometrists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who are registered to work in the UK to utilise their medical skills in a slightly different way, for a two week period, in the year ahead. It is an amazing experience to join a Vine Trust Medical team in the Peruvian Amazon or Lake Victoria's Tanzanian Island communities to make a positive difference to the future of some of the poorest children and communities in the world. Look online at www.vinetrust. org/volunteer/medical_teams. On Saturday 12th March, The Vine

Trust are excited to welcome the Key Speaker, Dr Ronald Ramirez, who has been with the trust for a number of years and will discuss his work with the people of the Loreto region of Peru on board the Amazon Hope. The conference will be held at the Vine Trust Barge in Leith, Edinburgh. This is the ideal opportunity to learn how you can get involved and also enjoy some time in Edinburgh and its revitalised waterfront. Please pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested. For more information ring me 33166/83455. Many thanks for your publication's support over the last year. David Tomison

Dear Editor, Many thanks to all of you who made the T Rex concert on Sun 27 Dec a fantastic night. The Victoria Hall was really buzzing. It was great to see so many people in the hall. The next rock concert will be on Easter Saturday 26th March, when John Coglan, drummer with Status Quo will be performing with his band. Tickets will be available shortly. Sally Haines, Victoria Hall Manager

Dear Editor, I was one of the hundreds of people affected by the recent loss of phone and broadband service and subsequent mix up of the lines. The service providers are the ones with responsibility for this and I understand that they will receive compensation from Openreach. I am in negotiation with BT who have offered refund of the charges for the period (7 weeks) and a ‘goodwill’

Dear Editor, A good time was had by all. The Grange Friends at Christmas lunch went ahead almost as usual on Christmas Day.

Three days before Christmas a water leak in the United Reformed Church hall rendered the room unusable. The Methodist Church came to the rescue and kindly agreed to allow us to use their hall. We managed to let most people know about the change of venue, despite many people in Grange not having a working telephone at the time.

Thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers we managed put our plans back on track and welcomed 45 people for Christmas lunch and festive entertainment. A special mention needs to go to Sharon and Robert from Fish-over-Chips who cooked dinner and also offered

payment of 2 months line rental, small recompense for the distress and expense incurred. Others have been offered varying amounts. There appears to be no consistency and I feel that those involved should work together, especially if we need to refer the matter to the Ombudsman. If anyone else would be interested in a joint response please phone 015395 35879. Name and address supplied

the use of their café for the day if we’d been unable to secure a new venue. We are also indebted to the private individuals and business in Grange who donated food and other goods including: Proctors Butchers, Butterfingers, the Chocolate Shop, Karen Rhodes Catering, Sunrise Cafe, Hazelmere Bakery, Grange Bakery, Co-op, Country House, Davenports, Grange Laundry, Robinsons Electric, Johnsons Jewellers, At Home Bistro, Higginson Butchers, Cromptons, Lymehurst Hotel, Netherwood Hotel, Flectchers, Michael C L Hodgeson, Hackney and Leigh, Grange Plant Centre, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company, Postlethwaites, Thyme Out café, Grange Flowers, the Spar and Cafe S. Free Good Will?

In November 2015, IRN research published a survey (priced at £120 funnily enough) of 60 ‘will-writers’, varying from large solicitors firms to online tick-box services, which found the average price of a standard will fell to £83 in 2015, with the average price from lawyers at £118. Prices are being forced down by new names using more fixed price deals, and the availability of online services from £20. 'The will-writing market is fragmented with many small players, including some unregulated ones’, says IRN. There are at least 40 purely online services, whose prices are generally much lower. However, the report findings are based on quoted fixed price rates and 'more complicated wills can be much more expensive and the pricing survey takes no account of the quality of the wills provided'. I added the emphasis there because it is important. Is it so shocking that sitting with an experienced, well trained professional is more expensive than filling in a form on a website? That getting a product you can rely on costs more? That there is a price to pay for knowing your Will has been prepared in full knowledge of your circumstances, what you want and how it should be done and that you or your family have the right to go back and complain in the (hopefully rare) circumstances where mistakes were made? Clients who come to see me about a Will don’t always get what they expect. Some clients don’t need a Will and I am honest enough to say so. Do you think speedywills.com would give you your £20 back if it decided you didn’t really need it? And would it go on to ask the right questions to see what you do need? The numbers of wills written seems to be fairly constant at about 1.2 million to 1.5 million, but the number of people aged over 60 is increasing. It is essential that you get this part of your planning right when you are considering your retirement and who gets what if you die. And what about Powers of Attorney and protecting your assets from those that would rather spend it for you whilst you are still alive? The report also said 'pressure is also coming from consumers with probate where more and more individuals undertake estate administration without turning to a professional’. In 2014, over 1/3rd of Grants of Representation were issued to individuals with no professional help. And good on them. Getting a Grant is not rocket science in many cases and you can save yourself legal fees if you go DIY. But it is not always easy to deal with someone’s estate. If you have others breathing down your neck, you may wish you had left it to someone else to sort, even if it does cost a bit more. The bits we do quickly, calmly and efficiently are worth paying for. Come to see us and we will show you plenty of Good Will. The first meeting is free.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP

Grange & District Lions Club December was a busy time for the Club and its members. Together with a very successful coffee morning in Flookburgh Village Hall, we were joined by several other societies taking Santa and his sleigh around the villages. Although the weather wasn’t always kind to us, Santa would not be deterred and all the scheduled nights were achieved. Some of the funds raised went to local groups who assisted on certain nights. Donations went to Allithwaite King George V Playing Fields Association, Flooks 4 Youth Group, Grange Preschool Play Group and Grange Rotary Club. The bulk of the Lions money (£500) went to the flood relief fund. Lions District Governor, Mike Bagnall, has set up an emergency flood relief fund. Lions Clubs from all over the North have already contributed and a £40,000 grant from Lions Emergency Fund applied for. It is envisaged that the Government will “match” all Lions funding. Kendal Lions Club have been particularly busy providing cleaning and disinfectant products to homes affected, as well as "hands on" support to help with the clean up operation. This is an ongoing project, and although it may fall from media coverage over the next few weeks, it could be many months before some people can return to their homes. Grange Lions will provide what help we can, plus financial support in the weeks ahead. Please support any fundraising initiatives by local societies. This is a real local disaster, and the knowledge that people not directly affected by the flooding really do care, means so much to those still struggling with this disaster. Finally, the Lions would like to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2016, and let’ s hope it eventually stops raining! (Due to technical problems prior to Christmas we didn’t receive the ‘Lions’ report so we’re printing both months now. - Ed)

Grange Rotary Fifty six Rotarians and guests assembled at the Netherwood Hotel for a very fine Christmas Lunch on 16th December hosted by President Helen Frain-Kaye. A "Chorley Raffle" was held and the proceeds sent to the charity Reverse Rett Syndrome. Members also assisted the Lions Club on one evening in December to help Santa who was touring parts of Grange over Sands and the wider community in his sleigh. The first event in 2016 was a Frugal Lunch held at the home of Past Presidents Sue and Colin Wilkinson when £260.00 was raised for the Cumbria Flood Appeal. The next big event is the third Defibrillator Training Day which is to be held at the Netherwood Hotel in conjunction with the First Responders, on Tuesday 23rd February. There will be two sessions: one starting at ten o’clock and finishing at

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI The Town Crier declared silence for the President! The meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem. The competition cup for 2015 was presented to Ann Anderson, who has won this for six years consecutively. Birthday cards were distributed and the President shared a reading with members entitled Fulfilment in the New Year. Richard Matthews, the Town Crier from Kendal gave a very interesting talk and slideshow on the history of Town Crying and reasons why he chose to become a town crier. He began his early career in Ulverston but quickly moved to Kendal where he has been employed as Town Crier for the past eight years. He explained the duties involved including requirements necessary to enter competitions and stayed for a plenary session afterwards. The next meeting of the Allithwaite and Cartmel WI will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2pm at Allithwaite Community Centre when the speaker will be Sandra Kendall talking about Embroidery as a Hobby. The competition will be, ‘A Stitch in Time’. New members will always receive a very warm welcome. Please contact 33696 if interested.

Grange & District Art Society After our pre-Christmas social and Christmas lunch we welcomed members back for our spring programme. The two demonstration afternoons in January were, ‘Painting Animals’ by Thuline De Cock, using mixed media and ‘Flower’ by watercolour artist Jackie Hadwin, with an opportunity to try out the methods shown. February will see one of our annual competitions within the society. This commemorates Miss Garrett, a founder member who instituted this particular competition. other meetings this month are for members to work on their own pictures and enjoy a get-together. New members are always welcome. The weekly meetings are held at Allithwaite Community Hall every Thursday from 2-4pm. Contact either Elizabeth 35163 or Angela 33842 for more details. There are also Friday evening meetings set up by the Art Society 2 years ago to encourage beginners, non-members or those not able to attend on Thursday afternoons.

Grange Soroptimists Members enjoyed a pleasant evening at their Christmas party at Woodlands, Meathop. An excellent meal was followed by party games. In December members took part in the Write for Rights Campaign run by Amnesty. The campaign sends messages of solidarity to people suffering human rights abuses and also includes writing to the authorities

Happy New Year to all our members and visitors and we hope we can look forward to lots of good golfing days. The last few weeks have seemed long and hard, not only have we had incessant rain creating problems all over the country but Grange and the surrounding villages have had to try and work with virtually no phones or internet connections. These are now almost sorted out and we hope by the time this ‘Grange Now’ issue is published these problems will be fixed. We are now taking bookings for all our Opens for this year, we have Gents, Seniors. Ladies and Mixed competitions to look forward to. Booking can be done via our website or calling the golf club Tel:33180 Option 2 or 3. Our various social activities are ongoing which are open to members and nonmembers.

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild Members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their first meeting of the New Year on Tuesday 12th of January. After the short business meeting, Sandra Kendall invited members to consider the variety of colour and texture found in lichens. Sandra had many samples of her interpretation in stitch of lichens to show and inspire us. Members then started stitching on dyed muslin with wools and threads, the resultant pieces either to be attached to bark-like looking fabric or felt “stones”. The next meeting is on Tuesday 9th of February when members of the committee will be leading on the proposed National Capability Brown Exhibition. New members are welcome, so if interested please contact the Secretary Joanna Henson on 01229-861800.

Grange Lecture Society Author and wildlife photographer Michael Leach launched the second half of the season on 12th January with a lecture entitled ‘It’s a Funny Way to Make a Living’. Dr Leach, who has filmed wildlife for numerous TV documentaries, including as part of Sir David Attenborough’s team of

Grange now | FEBRUARY 2016 - Next deadline 19th FEBRUARY

cameramen, contributed photographs to hundreds of books and magazines, and now writes wildlife books of his own, gave a humorous, strictly nontechnical introduction to the realities of professional wildlife filming. He explained, for example, how to coax animals into the right position for the camera without them realising anyone is watching and disclosed some of the cunning tricks of the trade that helped produce the photographs with which his lecture was illustrated. His message was that what we the viewers see is often not what we think we see. On 9th February Mo Holland returns to tell of a fascinating journey into Russia’s Arctic North East of Murmansk and on 16th February Amanda Owen of ITV’s The Dales talks about her challenging life as a Yorkshire Shepherdess. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Grange WI Members are looking forward to a busy year of events and talks. We have talks on a wide range of subjects – from witches and town criers to working in Greece. We also have several handson workshops planned – Easter flowers, quilling and Xmas decorations. And some social outings too. In between meetings we will be crafting our entries to the many local shows in the County. Our February speaker is Richard Evans from the RSPB and he will be telling us about the work of the South Lakeland Group. New members are very welcome. Please contact Margaret on Grange 36735.

Oxen Park Cinema Club Our programme for the New Year is now well underway. Most showings are at our purpose-built cinema in an old carthouse opposite the pub in Oxen Park. There are two series of films – the main programme on Tuesdays or Saturdays from September to May, and a ‘films on the fringe’ programme on the first Saturday of each month. We also like to take our mobile equipment around to village halls. One notable showing will be at Greenodd Village Hall on Saturday, 1 March. This is ‘Wild’ starring Reese Witherspoon and is based on a book of the same name by Cheryl Strayed. ‘With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behaviour, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. The film captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthen, and ultimately heals her.’ Any walker, especially those who have undertaken long journeys in the hills, will not want to miss this. Details can be found on our website at www.oxenparkcinemaclub.org.uk.

Grange Forum We sadly report the death of two former presidents of the club. Roy Twentyman died late last year and Donald Shepherd died on 1st January this year. Donald will be particularly missed as he, over the years, arranged the wonderful trips to the theatres in Manchester, Blackpool and Keswick. These brought much pleasure to so many people, many of whom were not club members. Our programme of presentation for 2016 commenced on 12th January and took us to the Isle of Man to enjoy Transport of delights. On the 19th we went further afield to an Everest Base Camp Walk. On the 26th our brains were tested by our New Year Quiz arranged as usual by Ann Anderson. On February 2nd we learn about the Citizen’s Advice Bureau from Martin Cooper, followed on the 9th by a talk named, ‘It’s a Crying Game’ taking us behind the scenes of a Town Cryer. No meeting on the 18th.

WHAT'S ON

Our Anniversary Lunch is served on the 23rd at Abbot Hall Hotel when there is a talk on Northern Entertainers by Susan Wilson. Why not sample one of these occasions? We meet at 10.15am at Abbot Hall Hotel every Tuesday. Ring Alan Anderson on 015395 33696 for further details.

Witherslack WI There was a good attendance for the January meeting to hear Phil Brown talk about the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. With some excellent pictures he told us of the diversity of our county's flora, fauna and landscapes. The danger of losing such wonderful wildlife, with so much already gone, is a very real threat. Paid workers and unpaid volunteers work the year round to protect it.There is a full programme of events to suit all ages and interests.Volunteers and new members are most welcome. Last minute additions are being made to the Centenary Scrapbook. A show of hands took care of the Resolutions. There will be a Fashion Show on May 6th. The overall winner of the competitions in 2015 was Jackie Ratcliffe. 2nd Tina Pearsall. 3rd Linda park Next month: Speaker. Gavin Lowe on The Chocolate Shop Visitors welcome. Tel: 52302

Grange Ramblers The walks scheduled for the 1st and the 9th December had to be cancelled because of the atrocious weather. Wednesday 16th four undeterred ramblers made a 6 mile circular walk in the aftermath of the recent heavy storms. Starting from “Toadpool” north of Plumgarth roundabout, followed footpaths eastwards to High Brundrigg then Capplerigg Lane. After coffee break took the route west along Gamblesmire Lane to reach the well preserved Lime Kiln near Cunswick Scar. After lunch the path along Scar to the summit Cairn then dropping down via Plumgarths to return to the start, finishing with tea/scones in the warm environment of Plumgarths Cafe. The group had two annually social events recently: 12th November the Pie and Pea supper was held at the Grange Golf Club, Matthew Emmott gave us an excellent illustrated talk on ‘Fortified Farm Houses in Cumbria’. We often pass such places on our walks but fail to notice them. We will now appreciate their historical significance. 6th December 28 of us thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch at The Woodlands Hotel Meathop, where we were made most welcome. These two events show our Ramblers Group has a thriving social side, as well as an active walks programme.

Grange Probus Club On 11th January, Geoff Woods gave an interesting and amusing talk entitled: The life and times of a sewer rat. This referred to Geoff’s long career as a drainage engineer. He began by giving some early history of sewage drainage beginning with the Romans and continuing with the facilities of medieval abbeys and priories. He then showed examples of modern drainage systems and the ways in which they were constructed. Probus is for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members welcome. Chairman - Russell Bloxsom 34595, Secretary - Ewen Cameron 32319.

Newton & Field Broughton WI The meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI held on January 13th was well attended. Following the business meeting the Resolutions were explained and members were given voting slips to cast their votes. Subscriptions were paid for the year. Then followed, an interesting quiz, covering several subjects, which members thoroughly enjoyed. The winner received a small prize. The February meeting will be on Wednesday 10th when the speaker will be Dr Nick Gent who will be Dr Nick Gent who will be describing his work with the World Health Organisation. It will start at 7.30pm in Lindale Village Hall.

Grange Civic Society The society AGM is to take place in the hall of the Methodist Church at 7pm on Thursday 10th March. The meeting will be followed by a short talk about the town, Grange, Now and Then.

Grange & District U3A The pre and post-Christmas period was very busy for members of the U3A. Our ‘Christmas Special’ general meeting in December was entertained by Tony Berry of the Houghton Weavers with song, stories and humour. The annual dinner, was held at Grange Fell Golf Club in early January when the feasting was constantly interrupted by ‘Betsy the Kitchen Maid’ and her dubious tales of life below stairs. Many of the interest groups held parties and gatherings to celebrate the season whilst the music group performed a programme of Christmas carols at three homes for the elderly in the area. Programmes for 2016 have been prepared by some of the groups including multi-day ‘events’ for birdwatchers and cyclists. Events of include: a quiz evening with pie and pea supper in January and, following a successful ceilidh in November, there will be a repeat in February at the Victoria Hall with a buffet provided by ‘Cracking Spread’. The recently established Country Dancing, Railway Enthusiasts and Environmental Awareness groups have had successful starts and an Indoor Bowls group will shortly commence at the Victoria Hall. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www. u3asites.org.uk/grange .

Cartmel and Ulverston Adult Education Centre First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Happy New Year! The New Year got off to a flying start with the majority of our classes beginning again in the first week of January. Perfect timing for those resolutions to be put into practice! We have a number of new Pilates classes now running, with experienced and highly qualified local tutor Tasha Jones, at Leven Valley, Grange Lindale and Cartmel. If you fancy going along to any of these, give the Centre a call and we can find out the best one to suit you. If you are looking to begin a more gentle exercise routine, following illness or rehabilitation after surgery, or simply just wanting to get back into exercising again, then maybe our Healthy Hearts classes may be more appealing. We have classes on a Tuesday in Ulverston and on a Thursday in Grange with our

excellent new tutor, Elaine Towler who is a fully qualified BACR Phase IV instructor. With regard to Yoga, we have the talented Bernie Riley back teaching for us at Cartmel Village Hall on a Monday and at Grange Methodist Hall on a Tuesday. Bernie is a qualified Sivenanda yoga tutor and Alexander Technique teacher and her many years of experience with Ashtanga Yoga inform her gentle intuitive releasing specialism. Unfortunately, we can only continue to run these and all our classes, with your continued support and for this we are extremely grateful. New Classes for February include, Buying and Selling on eBay on a Tuesday morning from 2/2 and a Discover Glass Fusing also on a Tuesday morning, which we had to postpone from January, so call us for more details. Saturday Workshops – We have

a number of workshops booked throughout February, such as Willow Weaving, Create a Digital Darkroom, Soft Furnishings, Make and Repair Silver Jewellery, Painting in Watercolour, Paint in Acrylics, Creative Writing, Mindfulness in Children, Create Your Own Visual Journal and Mindfulness for Everyone. Please call the office on 015395 36323, visit the website at www.cartmel adulted.org.uk or email us on adulted@cartmelproiryschool. co.uk for further details. And on a final note, following the departure of Jude and Debs for pastures new, we still do not have a new Centre Manager in place, so the office is currently open on a Monday and Tuesday, from 9am-2pm and on a Thursday and Friday, from 9am3pm. Many thanks to you all for your patience over the last few weeks, at this particularly busy time of year. Carolyn
