Letter from the Editor

CONTENTS

I must be very naive or maybe I am the only person who doesn't know, but on visiting a well known supermarket in Milnthorpe I picked up an item that an assistant had just fixed a discount sticker on. 'Well if it's not sold today it goes in the landfill' he announced, nodding at the large pile of stock in front of him. Now imagine that happening every day at every supermarket in the country. Apparently, it can't be given away as someone might sue them after eating out of date stock. A shocking moment! Some fabulous sporting achievements from local youngsters - well done to them all. As the weather improves why not try something new or visit a new place. Take a look at the what's on page for ideas. Wishing all the mothers a very Happy Mother's Day......especially mine! Thanks very much to the Grange Now team for pulling out all the stops to produce a great edition while simultaneously producing Windermere Now and the new Ulverston Now.

County Councillor Bill Wearing is pleased to announce that the Saturday bus service (532) will be starting again on the 19th March thanks to the contribution of funding from four local Councils (Upper and Lower Allithwaite, Lower Holker and Grange). These funds will subsidise this route so the more people that use it the less funds will be required from the Councils. Please support your local bus service. The timetable is available now. Bill would like to thank Town Councillor, Martin Ingle for helping to compile it and his County Officers for overseeing the contract for the new service. 532: Saturday service timetable

Decision time for Victoria Hall

Tuesday 5th April is the date when locals can give their opinions, and suggestions on the future of Victoria Hall. As has been reported previously in Grange Now, South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) will cease providing funding for the hall in 2019. They have provided nearly half of the funding for the running costs of the hall since 1982 and will continue to provide £28,000 per annum for the next three years. This does give an indication of how much it costs to keep the hall going. Councillor Tricia Thomas told Grange Now:” Grange Town Council really need people to give their opinion on what they would like to see happening with the hall, and this meeting will give them the opportunity to do that. We can be proactive now and look at ways of trying to get more people using the hall as a venue and meeting place, we can do nothing and just wait for the money to run out or we can try to sell the place. Unfortunately, as it is a listed building, with no parking and limited access, it is virtually unsaleable. We need people to come to the meeting and give their views and have a real ‘ideas’ session.” District and Town Councillor, Tom Harvey said: “This change in funding is not unexpected and has been coming for many months but it’s still extremely disappointing. The Victoria Hall

is both an important asset for our town but also a significant liability as running costs are rising and use and income decreasing. The Town Council fully owns the Victoria Hall which may come a surprise to some residents and as it’s now liable for all running costs it’s vital that the views of all residents are taken on board as we begin to put together an evidence based business plan on the best way to secure the future of the hall, the status-quo is just not an option. Its crucial that we make a decision on its future with the views of everyone in the area who are ultimately paying for it through their local taxes, whether they use it or not. It is a fairly well used facility but the world has moved on and changed from the times of big civic buildings and we need to find out from our residents what more they would like to see available that would make the large proportion of people who currently don't use it at all to support it further"

The meeting will take place, in the Hall, at 7pm on Tuesday 5th April.

52 years of guiding us across the Bay Grange Town Council are holding a civic ‘thank you’ for Cedric Robinson, to mark over 52 years of guiding people across the sands.

Grange now | MARCH 2016 - Next deadline 18th MARCH

“Have you crossed the Bay with Cedric? Which year was it? What did you enjoy most? We’d love you to tell Cedric just how much you enjoyed it. We have commissioned a bronze plaque of Cedric’s footprints, which is to be set into the ground, under the Cedric Walk sign, at the entrance to Berners Close. The plaque will be unveiled at a special event on 2nd April at Victoria Hall.” The event is by invitation only, but the town council would love you to take part and join in by sending a thank-you card, so he can see just how much enjoyment (and charity funding!) he has brought to us over the years. Please send a thank you card, with a personal message to Cedric Robinson, c/o Victoria

Hall, Main St. Grange Over Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6 DP, or drop it off at the Victoria Hall Information Centre during opening hours. Tell all your friends, spread the word on facebook – we’d like cards from all over the world, for every year of his service, for him to see on April 2nd. The April edition of Grange Now will carry pictures of the event and your cards.

David Sykes’ response to Lido funding Last month, we printed an article about funding South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) had received from the Coastal Communities fund in respect of the lido. In that article, we printed an email we had sent to David Sykes, Director of People and Places at SLDC, asking him to confirm what the money would be used for. Mr Sykes’ promised a response and here it is: SLDC is working to identify a scheme to address the derelict site of the former outdoor swimming pool. We acknowledge that finding a future use of the site has involved a number of approaches involving local people, organisations and advisers over many years. What is certain is that it is a challenging site, given its poor vehicular accessibility (for potential future users and for construction), its location on the edge of Morecambe Bay and its listed building status. Whilst these are constraints, we need to be creative in understanding how they may also offer opportunities for the site. A new future use will not come without cost. There will likely be significant capital cost and we would not wish to add further

revenue burdens through the resulting operational costs of the site. The choice and design of future use needs to take full account of financial realities. We recognise that there is a popular voice amongst the community which would welcome the idea of the restoration of a swimming pool, however the Council does not believe that such a proposal would prove a viable and sustainable option. We do not wish to raise further public expectation over this option.

We need to identify a deliverable option for the site, one which plays to the strengths and opportunities of the location and provides additional value for the resident and visitor experience of Grange-over-Sands and in particular the promenade area. Uses could include public open space, refurbishment and uses of the existing buildings, public art and interpretation of the site’s heritage. There will be complementary ideas on how the site may be used for events or exhibitions. We need to consider whether there are opportunities for community and private enterprise to play a role. SLDC has been awarded funding through the Coastal Communities Fund to develop the

business case and justification for bringing the site back into use as a valued community and economic asset for the area. SLDC intend to appoint advisors with the necessary professional experience to work with stakeholders and the Council’s officers to produce this case. The work will need to explore options, yet result in clear advice on what would be a preferred and deliverable option, which the Council and local partners can take forward within a reasonable timetable, securing the necessary consents and investment. This is about bringing a sharp focus on a solution rather than a general exploration of options. The Coastal Communities funding is available to SLDC in 2015/16 and 2016/17. Following a selection process for advisers, we are aiming to start the work in May and intend to have the outcome of the work by October/ November 2016, from which the implementation requirements will feed into the Council’s budget and work planning for 2017/18 onwards. We have a commitment to engage residents and organisations in Grange, the Town Council and local Ward Councillors with the work. long, can be viewed, in full, on Grange Town Council’s website. At the time of going to press the document was not available on the SLDC website.

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP

This year’s budget is on the 16th March. Although pensions have only recently undergone major reform it is widely predicted (albeit not from this firm as we never predict!) that there will be further changes to pensions in the form of the level of tax relief received when monies are paid into a pension fund. Presently one receives tax relief at your highest marginal rate of income tax (20% for a basic rate tax payer and 40% for higher rate) although there is a possibility that a flat rate for all will be introduced. On the back of the significant changes to pensions introduced last year (those which allowed access to pension funds, regular withdrawals from pensions without the need to buy an annuity, the ability to pass on residual pension funds to beneficiaries) it reiterates the importance of making correct

decisions when approaching retirement. Such decisions are particularly important since once certain decisions have been made with regards to pensions they cannot be reversed. The new owner of the former toilet, which was in fact sold by SLDC and not Grange Town Council, as reported last month, has put in a retrospective planning application through Town Planning and Development agent, Garner Planning. The change of use, from Artist’s studio to holiday let application, comes in the form of a 6 page document in which the introduction includes:

New showroom for Bespoke-ebikes

Solicitor returns to her south lakeland roots South Lakeland law practice Progression Solicitors is preparing to welcome a new solicitor who has decided to return to her roots. Nicola Wood is set to re-join Progression next month. She joins the growing commercial law team as an Associate Solicitor in the Nicola Wood commercial property department. Managing Director, Anthony Smith commented: “We are all looking forward to Nicola’s return. She is a fantastic asset, bringing a wealth of experience which will further strengthen our commercial property team and enable us to continue to provide the best service to our clients”. A former pupil of Ulverston Victoria High School, Nicola moved to London after completing her Law Society Finals becoming a senior associate in the commercial property group of a leading City law firm. Nicola acts in a range of real estate transactions including freehold and leasehold sales and purchases, buying and selling businesses, commercial lettings and renewals (acting for landlord or tenant) and development work. With a love of the outdoors and now with a young family, the Lake District has never been far from Nicola’s thoughts, she comments: “I am thrilled to be returning to my roots and delighted to be back working for Progression Solicitors. They are a truly unique firm with such an innovative yet holistic approach to client care, business development and the local community and I am very much looking forward to being part of the team once more”. A busy mum of three, Nicola lives in Ulverston and spends her spare time running long distances and enjoying the Cumbrian climate. She will be based at the offices in Windermere from 16 February.

Thanks from the Foodbank The local group of Co-workers of Mother Teresa (who organise the Foodbank collection in Grange) were delighted to meet up with two of the Missionaries of Charity from the convent in Liverpool, Sister Aniela and Sister Helyette, when they came to Grange for a day this week. They described the work they are doing with the homeless men - they run a hostel in Seel Street for 17 men and provide a soup kitchen four nights a week at the bombed out church of St Luke's. The Sisters are also working with young families and hold a regular Montessori class for pre-school children.

The last Foodbank collection on 7th February brought forth a wonderful response. They collected 292.4 kg of food, equivalent to 696 meals and £90 in cash. The next collection will take place on Sunday 3rd April, St Paul's Meeting Room 1-3 pm.

Former Cartmel Priory pupil through to semi-final Nina Jensen, who is currently in her final year at the University of Manchester studying law, is through to the semi-final of the Miss England competition.

Fly the flag for St George

Nina, who was brought up in Flookburgh, came 4th overall in the Miss North West competition and was the overall winner of the 'Miss Popularity north west 2015” which means she now proceeds to the semi finals. Nina, a former Cartmel Priory pupil, told Grange Now: “ I am ecstatic to win the public voting round. I first became involved in pageants when I was 18, participating in Miss Cumbria 2012, and then going on to represent the South Lakes area as Miss South Lakes Galaxy at the Miss England Galaxy competition in 2013. The pageants were a huge eye opener to me on what pageants are all about; they promote strong, intelligent and proactive young women living across the UK who really wish to give something back to the community from which they originated; and to make a real difference to the lives of others, as well as being an

Nina Jenson Miss popularity North West 2015

unusual way to make friends for life. Accordingly, I jumped at the chance to enter the Miss North West Competition 2015 which encompasses girls from all across the North West of England.”

On 30th October, Nina climbed Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, as part of the competition, and in aid of Variety. She told us: “Although challenging in the wet weather conditions, I felt such a sense of accomplishment to reach

the top. I am still collecting donations for my climb but have so far raised £250. It also felt such a privilege to be able to do the climb in my home county, where I think we are so lucky to be surrounded with such a beautiful landscape.”

Nina was due to take part in the Miss Cumbria competition which was set to take place in March but, unfortunately, this has been postponed due to the floods. We wish Nina the best of luck in the semi-finals which will take place in May 2016.

Don't miss the celebrations for St. George's day on April 23rd and 24th. The Chamber of Trade are organising a two day event on Grange playing fields to celebrate St George's Day. They encourage us all to fly the St. George's flag and are planning a range of activities and stalls including the Fire Brigade, Bay Search and Rescue, a beer tent, wine tasting, Unsworth Brewery, Cartmel Cheeses, game pies, children's events, birds of prey, Punch and Judy, ice cream stall, fairground, rides, running events and much more. So make a date in your diary and join in the fun!

For the

love of dogs!

Did you know that there are almost 9 million dogs in the U.K. with around 24% of households owning at least one dog. So more than the estimated 7.4 million cats (17% of households) but some way behind the estimated 37 million pet fish. So here's the Grange Now page on pooches. They provide exercise, companionship, fun, frolics and occasionally a serious test of patience. But for the most part, we love 'em!

Becoming a ‘dog sitter’ is a great option to get the best of both worlds. You get to look after family dogs when their owners go on holiday, and you give them back at the end of the holiday, and have a bit of ‘you’ time. As well as getting the satisfaction of seeing a happy dog (and happy owner), you also get to go on those lovely walks again, that seem a bit strange when you don’t have a dog at your side. It is a big commitment though, so you have to be sure you are happy to look after another dog, just like it is your own! Playing with it, cuddling it, feeding it, settling it at night, walking it ….

There are several ways to become a dog sitter – you can advertise yourself, but please make sure you are properly insured, and by law you need an Animal Home Boarding licence (see SLDC website). Or you can go to a company that offers the service, and dog sit on their behalf. Check with the company that they are going to supply the insurance and take you through the licence. Either way, if you miss having a dog, or are worried about being dogless in the future, dog sitting gives you the opportunity to fill the gap in that part of your life.

When adopting a dog you must be sure that you can commit to him/her for life, the same as you would a child.

Consider the effect the animal will have on your lifestyle for what could amount to the next 15 plus years. Your travel, social life, moving home and increasing your family all need to be taken into consideration. People need to consider the financial burden on their income; your pet will need vaccinations, neutering, worming and flea treatments plus veterinary care for any unexpected illness or accidents. You will need to carefully consider what size and age of dog you best fit into your life and plan in advance for a several week adjustment when your dog arrives in your home. Your dog will give you a lifetime of unconditional love, loyalty and friendship in return he/she counts on you to provide food, water, shelter, veterinary care and exercise. These are the basic principles in caring for your pet.

Your dog will need an initial course of vaccinations and then a yearly booster. If you intend for your dog to go into a boarding kennel they will also need a kennel cough vaccine and if going abroad a passport and rabies vaccine.

Neutering/spaying is one of the kindest things you can do for your dog. Apart from the obvious, no breeding, your pet will be happier and healthier, spaying helps prevent uterine, ovarian and breast cancer in female dogs and neutering in male dogs prevents testicular cancer and prostate problems. Last but not least it saves lives as there will be fewer dogs to end up in rescues. You will need to understand your dog’s behaviour. He can’t talk but he does communicate with you in other ways, pants, tilts his head, circles. Learn what each action means and you will soon be communicating easily. Animal Refuge Furness

Caring for your pets this Spring. Did you know from April this year Microchipping your pet will be compulsory by law for all dogs in the UK and for new pups it must be carried out before they are eight weeks old. Although it isn’t law for cats to be microchipped, we think it is very important, especially as they often wander more than dogs. It is a quick and relatively painless procedure and vital to ensure your pet is permanently identifiable.

A microchip is hardly bigger than a grain of rice and just takes a few seconds to implant. Like a normal injection, it is inserted under the skin at the back of the neck, and once there, lasts a lifetime.

Should your pet go missing and is found, veterinary practices, the police and welfare organisations all have special microchip scanners and will routinely scan stray pets. The warming weather of Spring also means the return of certain parasites, notably Ticks and Fleas. As well as being directly distressing to your pets, they can also act as vectors of far more serious diseases. Starting early with preventative treatment is very important at this time of year, and now for dogs it is easier than ever with a single tablet now available that protects against fleas and ticks for 3 months!

All adult dogs and cats should be wormed every 3 months but if they are hunters or go out and about more as Spring approaches then monthly treatment is better to prevent significant worm infestations. Of course routine annual Vaccinations are important all year round, but if you are planning your holidays we strongly advise vaccination against Kennel Cough if your dog is going into boarding kennels. Have you thought about taking your pet abroad with you? Rabies Vaccination and a Pets Passport may now make this more possible. Regular booster vaccinations, combined with a health check, are the best way of protecting your pet, plus at the same time we can keep a watchful eye out for any emerging problems.

We are a nation of animal lovers.

Pets can be great fun and give their owners lots of love and companionship. Getting your pet is very exciting but it is important to do your research beforehand to make sure you get the pet and breed that is right for you.

REMEMBER P(Place) E(Exercise) T(Time) S(Spend)

Place

Exercise

Time Spend

You pet will need space to exercise & play. Dogs benefit from a secure place outdoors, cats love to explore outside and smaller animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs like going out in a run. Give thought to the amount of outside space you have & whether it is safe and secure for a pet. All pets need exercise to be happy and healthy. Dogs especially need regular walks no matter what the weather and if possible to have time to run off lead. All animals enjoy games and toys. For smaller animals this can be in the house or their cage. Pets love spending time with their human companions and this is vital to stop them being lonely, anxious and stressed. Some animals prefer to live on their own and others in pairs or groups. Either way they will still need your time and attention. Remember to factor in time for walks, exercise, play, feeding, cleaning, grooming and vet visits. As well as the one off cost of buying or rehoming a pet there are regular expenses such as food, housing & bedding, toys, insurance, vet bills & medication.

Owning a pet is a fantastic experience. Speak to other pet owners, your local pet shop and vet for advice before and during your pet ownership. Lamberts Pet Supplies & Grooming Salon

16 years of professional pet care Established in 2000, Kennel Maids are now into their 16th year of providing Professional Pet Care in Grange over Sands and surrounding area. As specialists in behaviour and socialisation/rehabilitation, they provide a range of services tailored to individual needs. We have our hand picked team of professional dog walkers, walking on average 25 dogs per day. The dogs are collected and delivered back home after an exciting, stimulating hour of fun and frolics with a group of dogs. All dogs are carefully introduced to the groups with owner present, in advance of their regular walk.

Wendy and her team are busy back at home in Witherslack providing both Licensed Home Boarding and Doggy Day Care. “Our clients are varied but many of our daily day care clients are busy local business owners and professionals who need peace of mind knowing their dogs are themselves cared for by professionals”

Her colleagues Sylvia and Kate also provide licensed Home boarding in their beautiful homes , for older, less active dogs inparticular. Grange now | MARCH 2016 - Next deadline 18th MARCH

Arnside Fire Station to stay open

Peter Standing Winner of the 2015 Bittern Award

On Monday 15th February, Grange Now spoke to Guy Crossman, Crew manager at Arnside, at one of their weekly training sessions.

They are naturally very pleased that the station will remain open. Guy said: “The past few months have been a stressful time for us all and we are pleased to hear that we will now remain ‘on call’ for the people of Arnside and surrounding area. We would like to thank the community who have really got behind us and we very much appreciate everything they have done to help.” Guy, a gas engineer, has been a retained firefighter for 21 years. Colleagues, Clive Gott and Steven Robertson also show the level of commitment this community station has with both of them serving for 21.5 and 29 years respectively. Steven’s brother, Paul is also a firefighter and is collecting his 20 year long service and good conduct medal on the evening that Grange Now visited the Station. The strong sense of camaraderie is clear and the length of service of half the force shows the level of commitment towards, not only this small village, but to the job they are doing.

Lucy Barron, AONB Manager awards Peter Standing the Bittern Award.

Now recruiting

Far from shutting, Arnside are now recruiting. Guy told us: “We have 9 on call firefighters in Arnside, all kinds of occupations from gas engineers to stonemasons. We need another 4 people to bring the station up to full complement.” Could you do it? Kasey Grainger, who is in charge of on call recruitment for this area outlined the requirements for the job:

Anyone could be an on-call firefighter, ready at a moment’s notice, to leave their place of work, family home or even out shopping to dash off to deal with any type of emergency situation. In many parts of the county these are the people who will be

Peter is proud to receive medal Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Steve Healey, was also at the station on the night we were there. He told us: “I have worked with the Arnside group for many years and they are a dedicated crew and I’m delighted that the station is staying open. That said, Cumbria County Council now has some tough decisions to make, as cuts will have to be made elsewhere.

St James’ Church celebrates its 150th anniversary

first on scene at a house fire, car crash or flooding incident. If you live or work within 5 minutes of the station you’ve passed the first test! If you are fit, healthy and looking for a life changing challenge you’ve also passed the second test! These are not volunteer roles, the pay scales for an on-call firefighter are:

nn A retainer of £2,158 - £2,877 dependent on the cover provided

nn An hourly rate of £13.14 when competent in your role

nn An On-Call Firefighter can earn up to £6,000 a year

medals and it is even more honourable when it is to a retained firefighter. I must point out the long service medal isn’t just handed out to everyone; it is also a good conduct award.”

I’m also pleased to be here tonight to say a few words about Firefighter, Paul Robertson prior to Chief Fire Officer, Jim Onions, awarding him his long service medal for 20 years service. It’s always really pleasing to give

The Church has a full programme of event planned throughout 2016 to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

On Saturday 12th March, The Allegri Singers will delight with their programme which focuses on Shakespeare: music from his time and a setting of three of his texts. The first half includes William Byrd’s Mass in Four Parts, written for Catholics avoiding persecution by meeting in secret, and anthems written by Tomkins, Amner and

In his speech, ACFO Healey also thanked and praised Paul Robertson’s family: “Being an on-call firefighter takes a lot of commitment, not just from the firefighter but also his family, so I would extend my thanks to Paul’s wife, Carol and daughter, Zara (23). Paul’s other daughter wasn’t able to attend as she was just 2 weeks from giving birth.

Weelkes for the newly formed Anglican Church.

In the second half of the programme, the choir will sing settings by Vaughan Williams of three Shakespeare poems, including the richly atmospheric Full Fathom Five, with its wonderful representation of tolling bells. As a contrast, the concert ends with something very different: Poulenc’s four Christmas Motets, among the 20th century’s most beautiful unaccompanied choral music.

The Bittern Award is given annually to recognise a person or organisation who has made an outstanding contribution to the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Peter has managed the Arnside & Silverdale Landscape Trust’s annual event programme since 2010; attracting, entertaining and informing many local people and visitors to the area. Peter moved to Arnside & Silverdale AONB in 2007 after a medical career that included 29 years as a GP in Bury. Since taking on the role, Peter has introduced a popular and well attended annual weekend series of lectures, field trips and exhibitions. He also launched a ‘Meet the Villages’ weekend rotating around local venues with ‘Meet the Yealands’ (2012), ‘Welcome to Warton’ (2013), ‘Story of Storth’ (2014), Beetham and Hale (2015) and ‘All about Arnside’ (2016). Silverdale in 2017 will complete the cycle. During 2015 the Landscape Trust mounted a total of 15 lectures, 32 field trips, 4 tours, 7 exhibitions, 2 socials, one children’s event and one play ‘the Life and Times of William Hutton’. These events attracted cumulative attendance figures of over 4500. Speaking about the Bittern Award Peter said ‘I am honoured but surprised to receive this award. I see it very much as recognition of the importance of the Landscape Trust, and I must stress that I am only one of a team of hard working Trust officers.

My post as events organiser is a great job which has given me the opportunity to meet and learn from an amazing variety of experts on every imaginable aspect of the AONB. Organising events and new projects provides me with an exciting and ongoing landscape education course and it has been a pleasure to meet the wonderful people who attend events and make up the membership of the Landscape Trust’. Peter is also involved in writing a series of geotrails set in the AONB and other nearby limestone landscapes. His guide to Whitbarrow came out last year and this year will see the publication of guides to Beetham and Arnside and an upgraded edition of the Storth and Sandside geotrail guide.

Concert starts at 7.30pm and there will be retiring collections for the church and singers.

Arnside Ladies Choir who will entertain the audience with a varied programme including Nostalgia. There are events planned for throughout the year and we will print details of these in the coming editions. If, however, you can’t wait that long, the Church have produced a lovely colour brochure which gives the history of the Church and a programme of events in included within.

Tim’s column

A number of small rural primary schools, those with less than 150 pupils like the schools at Cartmel, Lindale and Allithwaite, have been in touch with me to see what I can do to help them with the funding gap created by the Government removing the special support that had been in place to help smaller schools provide free school meals to the children in their infant classes. Free school meals for all children in reception through to Year 2 at Primary Schools was one of the measures introduced under the last coalition government. All the evidence I have seen points to this having been a really good thing to do as these are some of the key years in children’s development and research points to children who have had a good meal at lunchtime performing much better at school. Even Mr Cameron seemed to believe that it was a good thing as he has always claimed to support it and only a few months ago dismissed rumours that its funding was to be cut. However, despite all of these fine words the government are removing the support that they put in place to ensure that smaller schools, with none of the economies of scale you find in larger schools, could provide the meals to their children. It is still compulsory for the schools to provide the meals and so Head teachers are having to look elsewhere in their budgets to find the money. I know from my time as a Governor of Dallam School that staffing is by far the largest element of any school budget and so I fear this is the area that Heads will turn to first. Sadly there are a growing number of signs like this

one that the Government is really not that interested in supporting rural areas like ours. Not only have we seen this threat to our free school meals but, despite massive numbers of people complaining about the issue, the Government seems determined to go ahead with its plans to close the courts in Kendal. This will mean that in our area we will have to travel to either Barrow or Lancaster if we need access to our justice system. The Government says that with new technology we should be able to appear in court from our own homes. Clearly they have not used our broadband systems. What would happen to someone who needed to appear in court if their broadband went down as it did in Grange recently? The risk is that our already overstretched police force will be reduced to being a taxi service taking people to and from court. Coming hot on the heels of the bungled attempt to reduce funding for rural police like ours in Cumbria I feel that I will have my work cut out fighting for South Lakeland over the coming years. As ever if I can help you with any issues please do email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk, call me on 01539 723 403 or go to my Facebook page. Thanks for your support, Tim

Grange now | MARCH 2016 - Next deadline 18th MARCH

Following in Dad’s footsteps

Eat, Run, Sleep, Repeat... Several local youngsters have successfully got through to the first ever national, under 12’s final, for cross country running. Many primary school children took part in the recent qualifiers and Evan Allen, Warren Fleming and Sophie Rylance are 3 of the children who have made it through to the finals which will take place in the grounds of the iconic and glorious Belvoir Castle on 19th March 2016. We spoke to them and their families.

Dual nationality, multi-talented Inspired by his dad, Evan [pronounced A-fan] started running races from 4 years of age. He has run in many fell races across the country, and has even competed in Holland, Austria and France whenever he has had a chance. One of his proudest moments was coming first in the trail run in his age category in Chamonix, France. Evan is a member of Helm Hill running club in Kendal, as well as Allithwaite School running club. This photo was taken during the BOFRA fell race in Kettlewell, Yorkshire. Evan loves the mountains and strives to become as fast (faster?) as Kylian Jornet [Kílian Jornet Burgada is a Spanish ski mountaineer and long-distance runner. He is widely regarded as the best trail runner in the world.] Dad, Stuart, and Dutch mum, Tessa, and little sister, Tara Nel are also keen runners and they are often seen out running together as a family. He's not just a champ when it comes to running, Evan is also a talented musician, actor and dancer!

It's a family affair

Well, running in them, to be exact. Warren Fleming, 10, a pupil at Leven Valley Primary has been running for Hoad Hill Harriers since he was 8 years old.

Sophie Rylance, Y6 pupil at Lindale Primary, came first in the qualifiers which were held at Casterton School. Sophie’s parents, Jon and Niki told us:

He is another one of the youngsters who has qualified for the national final. Warren’s dad, Paul, not only qualified for the nationals when he was a lad but he also won Young Sportsman of the Year when he was 12.

“Sophie had a preliminary event for South Lakes schools which she won and progressed to a county trial, again at Casterton School. She won that event too with a lead of over 30 seconds over the next fastest Cumbrian.

She has won the U11 Cumbria Cross Country League this year and she has been competing in the English Fell Running Championships where she has done very well but they do not award positions until she is older. She won the Matterhorn Ultraks U10 event last summer in Zermatt, Switzerland where she beat all the boys!” The whole family enjoys running and they are all members of Ambleside AC and they

NECK AND NECK Hound trailing is a traditional Cumbrian sport that's been around for over 100 years. If you have not seen, or even heard of, hound trails then it's worth a visit to one.

The hounds are exceptional athletes that compete in trails over various terrains including fells and fields. They older hounds run 10 miles and 5 miles for the pups. March trials commence on 1st March, normally the start of the season for the championship starts 1st April but due to Easter being early this year they will start Easter Saturday. information for the venues can be found on the official hound trailing association website: www.houndtrailing.org.uk

Why not go along to the presentation evening on 5th March at Jutland club, Ravenstown. Tickets are available from Alison Langhorn, Chairperson for Ulverston Hound Trails Committee. Tickets are priced at: £6.00 for adults £4.50 for children, to include entertainment and pie & peas. 015395 32195

regularly run in the fells together. Surprisingly, it was Sophie and her sister Chloe who joined the club first and they then persuaded mum and dad to join as well. Sophie runs on the fells most and competes in cross country during the winter. She competes in school events for Lindale CE primary school and has won all her events so far.

Mum, Collette, told Grange Now: “Warren did well in his first school sports, age 5, winning the long distance and it started from there really. Joining HHH happened by chance really as we were at Glaxo sports club watching his brother, Blake (7), play football. Warren started chatting to a lady and then he came back and said "see you I’ve joined a running club" and off he went running around the track! He trains with them on a Wednesday night, and sometimes on the Barrow track on a Tuesday. He also plays football for both grange and Ulverston so trains twice a week and plays on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Come and see our exciting

Shake off the winter pounds Allithwaite Running Club meets for regular runs every Monday and Thursday evening. The usual start is at 6.30 p.m. from Allithwaite Community Centre. Of course, at this time of year, a head torch and some reflective clothing are needed, but little else in the way of special kit. The runs vary in route and can be on roads, trails, cross-country, or even a bit of everything. The distances can be varied too, even having two groups to do short and long runs, so there's no need to feel that one's not good enough. Please come along and try it out, shake off the Winter pounds and get ready for your own events this year.

Coming up, on the 19th of March, the Cartmel's trail race will take place. It's one of the Lakeland Trails series of races, held every year. There will be 10 and 18 km routes on offer and several of the club will be running in those. Different start points for club evenings get used too. On the 18th of February, the club run started from Grange, headed towards Kents Bank, before coming back along the promenade to the station, up through Eggerslack wood to Springbank Lane and back to Grange. Earlier in that same week, 9 members met in High Newton for a new route, on road, through Ayside, Barber Green and round the lanes back to the start point and The Crown for a few of us too. Come the lighter evenings, we intend to start heading up to the hospice again to enjoy the superb views

FOOD & DRINK

Delicious treats and wonderful bread Not sure how your new year resolutions are going...one of ours at the bakery was to spend the quieter winter months looking at our recipes, working out how to improve them and creating some new products for our customers to try. Our classic 'millionaire' shortbread, chocolate loaf cakes, viennese whirls, cornflake cakes and even our gingerbread men are all now made and dipped in delicious Belgian chocolate! They tasted great before but we think they are even better now. We've also introduced two new delicious 'tray bakes', a flapjack base with a hint of ginger, a caramel topping and you guessed it: real Belgian chocolate on the top, the second is a peppermint fondant on a chocolate shortbread biscuit base covered in the same delicious chocolate. On the bread front, we now have a low GI Multiseed Sourdough on the shelves, with more new ideas to come as the year unfolds. Don't forget to use your pre-loaded loyalty card in March, you can use it in any of our 4 shops at ‘The Market Hall’ Ulverston, 83 Market Street Dalton, ‘Lakes Parade’ (opp.Hospital) Barrow, and our Grange Shop. Why not start your day with one of our great coffees and a croissant for £1.95. We're open from 8am.

The 7-13th March is the pinnacle of the calendar for pie lovers in Great Britain - it’s British Pie Week! These seven days provide the chance to unashamedly celebrate this great British classic. And there is something frankly quite unbeatable about tucking into a hot pie on a cold evening… it represents the best of traditional British food and of course we want to shout about it! We have been bakers of Pies for over 30 years and are proud of our range of savoury goodies. Our home-made hot water crust pastry has been perfected over decades, offering that unrivalled combination of golden colour, crisp texture and buttery savoury flavour. The Pie making begun when Pauline dedicated to diversify the offering of the traditional Butchers Shop – at first just selling a small range of favourite varieties. This has expanded over the years and we now sell in excess of 40 pie products. So, what sets ours apart from the rest you ask? We think it’s down to the generous quantities of best quality, local ingredients used in the fillings,

Look out for the new vending machine in front of the barn entrance, where you will be able to select glass or plastic bottles to fill with fresh milk every day. The Parks will also be selling some raw milk in the farm shop fridges: “Raw milk is something that we have consumed every day of our lives; to us the word milk means the raw, natural product that comes straight from the herd. We believe that the link between your food and where it comes from should be absolutely clear. Our customers can see the cows in the parlour and then purchase the fresh milk”.

CHURCH NEWS

Churches Together March finds us part way through Lent, and so part way through the House Groups. There are two on offer this year, and you are welcome at any session of either Group. Full details are to be had at any of the Churches in Grange and District. The Lent Lunches continue on Fridays, but it is best to check where, because no two are in the same venue. Also ongoing is the Ecumenical Men's Breakfast. This gathers at 8.45 on a Saturday morning, at Thornleigh Hotel,on the Esplanade. The actual dates do vary, but a phone call to Bryan on 34097 will get you all the details, and if you so wish put your name on the list. Easter Day comes in March, the day the Churches have much to celebrate. The celebrations come after the darkness of Good Friday, and for the Christian is the most important day of the year. Do come and share, in any of the Churches.

St Paul’s, Grange St Paul’s Parochial Church Council had an extremely busy away day recently with many important matters to discuss. Amongst other issues, the Mission Action Plan was reviewed and updated and the proposals from the Building Development Group as to the phasing of the re-ordering were considered. The Cake & Candlemas Service was a great success with the church full of children and their families resulting in a hasty rush to print more service sheets and to provide extra chairs as there was such a large congregation in attendance. The next Laying on of Hands will take place on Sunday 13th March at the 11.00am service. This is an important part of the church ministry and is open to all who wish for healing for either themselves or someone known to them. Maundy Thursday is the 24th March and the service of the Eucharist of the Last Supper will take place at 7.30pm followed on Good Friday by the Liturgy of the Cross at 2.00pm. This year’s ecumenical Easter Day Sunrise service will take place at 6.45am on the 27th March in Hampsfell Car Park. To encourage early risers coffee and hot cross buns will be available afterwards. The Easter flower decorations in St Paul’s will be arranged on the 26th March. These displays are designed by the church flower team and,in addition, volunteers will be decorating the window ledges. The church is open daily and visitors are welcome to come and view the displays which will be in place until 8th April.

St. Mary’s, Allithwaite In contrast with all the December events and services January was a fairly uneventful month at St Mary’s apart from a problem with the heating system which led to holding the Sunday services in the Mary Lambert Hall on one occasion. Thankfully this has now been resolved and we were able to use the church to host a visit from both our Bishops (Carlisle and Penrith) on February 1st, which was well attended by representatives from all the churches in the Windermere Deanery, for a presentation of “God for All” . This is the Diocesan strategy for the

Thursday we will meet at 7.30pm & on Good Friday at 10am we will meet in the Methodist. Church. Everyone is welcome to join us for any or all of these important services in the Christian Calendar.

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Parish Many of you will be well aware that the former St. Cuthbert’s Chapel in Flookburgh, which was closed in November 2013, has been for sale since spring last year. It has now been sold, the sale being completed in mid-January, and the new owner had begun work to convert it into living accommodation. Last month I mentioned that details of the charities benefitting from the money raised at our Christmas Charity Concert would appear in this issue of “Grange Now”. Barnabas fund, a charity which works amongst persecuted Christians in many countries around the world, and local charity, St. Mary’s Hospice have both received donations of £200

an Interim Vicar in the Cartmel Peninsula Team caring for both Allithwaite and Flookburgh. Rachel is at present Assistant Curate in the Penrith Benefice and we look forward very much to welcoming her to the area, and pray that God will bless her as she prepares for this new ministry amongst us. She will be licensed at St John’s Church, Flookburgh on Friday, April 8th. Meanwhile we are preparing for Easter by taking part in and sharing with members of other churches the various Lent courses and study groups available at different times and days of the week, and at St Mary’s we are hosting a six week “Grace” course on Wednesday evenings designed as a discipleship course for every Christian.

thanks to the generosity of those who supported the concert in any way. “Tempus fugit” – it’s already the season of Lent and our attention focusses once again on charitable works in preparation for the great feast of Easter. “Family Fast Days” and collections for “Cafod” remind us that there are so many people in this world who depend on our support so that they can simply survive. The Lenten Lunches organised by the different churches in Grange will be well and truly under way by the time you read this – if you haven’t yet given your support to at least one of them why not try to support next week’s lunch? After soup and a roll, you might still be a little peckish but you won’t

Regarding social matters at St. Charles’ and St. St. Cuthbert’s Parish, the annual Parish Lunch will take place on 24th April – we are hoping for a bumper attendance. Details of other social events will be announced shortly. Whatever you do and wherever you go in these early days of 2016, may the Good Lord go with you.

The Mass in D by Antonin Dvorak forms the second part of the programme. This is a beautiful choral work, which dates from 1887, and will be performed in the version by the composer for choir and organ. The choir will be conducted by the Society’s Director Adrian Self and accompanied by Colin Dean. Vibrant spring exhibition

The Beach Hut Gallery is delighted to host a vibrant spring exhibition of artwork by Tina Balmer and Rosie Wates. The artists cooperative, who run and showcase their own work through the delightful setting of their Kents Bank Station gallery, also play host to a variety of talented artists throughout the year. The exhibition starts on Friday 11th March and runs for 8 weeks until 15th May. The main subjects of Tina's paintings are flowers and she told Grange Now: “Sometimes my paintings move towards abstraction, then return to something more figurative, all in the process of trying to capture the essence of the object, whether flowers, animals or figures." Rosie creates "mysterious spaces" in paintings and theatre boxes, where dramas are played out. She uses rich colours with glimmers of gold. Tina and Rosie are founders and joint organisers of "Art Fest", which takes place July 23rd and 24th at Kendal Town Hall. The Beach Hut Gallery will be open every day except Tuesday over the two week Easter holiday from Friday 25th March to Sunday 10th April. Please check website for updates: www.thebeachhutgallery.co.uk

Just 17 years old but already Jess Gillam is making her mark on the music world. She has reached the category finals of the BBC Young Musician of Year competition (Woodwind). On reaching the final Jess said: “ I am delighted. The competition is a brilliant platform and I can’t wait to compete.” The category finals will take place on 6-10 March at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with the semi-final on 13 March 2016. Ulverston Now caught up with Jess to find out a bit more about this incredibly talented young musician: “I am from Ulverston, I attended Ulverston Victoria High School and my parents run Gillam’s Tearoom on Market Street. Do you come from a musical family? My dad is a drummer and was in a successful band called TC:Hug when he was younger but my mum isn’t musical at all. My younger sister, Patsy, who is 13, plays clarinet and bass guitar. She has played clarinet in the National Children’s Orchestra for three years and she is also in a band called “Pesky” who have a record deal with Fierce Panda (who signed Placebo and Coldplay) and have been interviewed live on BBC Breakfast and have had radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 and FM!

Where did your love of music and, in particular, the saxophone first originate? When I was 7, my dad was teaching drums at the Barracudas Arts Centre

Artist of the Month Jess Gillam, saxophonist in Barrow. There were drumming workshops, stilts, dance and saxophone and I thought it would be a good idea to try the saxophone! I picked it up and tried it and have loved it ever since. I started taking lessons when I was 9 and then began studying at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester when I was 13. Apart from ‘Young Musician of the Year’ what else are you doing this year? I am playing at the Victoria Hall in Grange over Sands on Friday 18th March. I will be performing as a student of the Junior RNCM. Percussionist Elliott GastonRoss (BBC Young Musician 2014 Finalist) will also be performing and we will be accompanied by David Jones, the deputy head of the Junior RNCM and Head of Accompanying at the RNCM. There will be a diverse range of music with many kinds of influences and origins. Other concerts in Cumbria this year include: a solo recital at the Ulverston International Music Festival in June. I became the Young Ambassador for the Festival last year and gave a solo performance to a sold out Coronation Hall! In July last year, I was the youngest solo performer at the World

Saxopohone Congress in Strasbourg and for my performance, I commissioned music from three of the country's leading saxophonists - Barbara Thompson (composer of the music to "A Touch of Frost" , Rob Buckland (professor of saxophone at the RNCM) and John Harle (composer of music to "Silent Witness" and has sold over half a million records as a saxophonist). I also composed my own piece which incorporates a poem by local poet and artist John Ruskin entitled "Night". I will perform these pieces at Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, on Thursday 14th April. In December, I will also be performing as a concerto soloist with the acclaimed Lakeland Sinfonia in Kendal. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? I would love to have a solo performance career and I would love to be performing concertos, collaborating with other musicians and playing music across the world!

Levens Choir returns to Cartmel Having begun life as the result of a chance remark at a meeting in 1975 of the Levens Young Wives Group about having a singing group in the village, Levens Choir, now celebrating its 40th season

Following their sell-out concert in Allithwaite Church of Christmas music, the choir is now rehearsing for its special ‘birthday’ concert. This will be a programme of unashamedly favourite music: all English and mostly from the early 20th century. Vaughan Williams, Britten and Finzi – three of Music Director Ian Jones’s favourite composers – are all featured as are some of Ian’s favourite poets, including Shakespeare whose death 400 years ago is also recognised.

Antony Christie, who joined the choir for the unforgettable memorial concert for the First World War centenary in November 2014, will again be reading the poems. The choir’s indefatigable accompanist and honorary member Adrian Self from Cartmel Priory will be accompanying some of the pieces including his own setting of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ lovely poem ‘The May Magnificat’. By way of contrast, the choir will also sing George Shearing’s jazzy settings of five Shakespeare songs for which Ken Forster will relinquish his position amongst the choir’s basses to play the piano. The concert will be performed twice – another attractive characteristic of the way

Levens Choir works – in two of its favourite venues: Cartmel Priory, on April 9th and St Anne’s Church, Ings on April 12th, both at 7.30pm. Later in the year, on July 9th, the choir joins with the internationally acclaimed English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble in a programme of music from the Renaissance and the 19th century.

All details of the choir’s activities are on its website www.levenschoir.net. Tickets for the Cartmel Priory concert on April 9th are available from Grange TIC. Tickets for both concerts are at Kendal TIC, Made in Cumbria and Windermere Information. Contact 01539 730590 for further ticket enquiries.

Strictly Westmorland - an evening of dance music Westmorland Orchestra and Westmorland Youth Orchestra will come together on Saturday 12th March for a joint concert with Conductors, Richard Howarth and Roland Fudge. A unique collaboration between two favourite local orchestras brings an evening of popular dance music to the Westmorland Hall in Kendal, on Saturday 12th March at 7.30pm. The programme includes music by Grieg, Khachaturian and Gershwin

and, of particular interest in this the Beatrix Potter 150th anniversary year, is a selection of music from the film and ballet by John Lanchbery. This will be performed by the joint orchestras along with the première of ‘The Long Pursuit’ by Roland Fudge, Conductor of the Westmorland Youth Orchestra. Roland says of this commission “It is a great honour and pleasure to be writing for these two wonderful Westmorland orchestras; in the demands put on both of

them I am showing the great respect I have for their skill and commitment. It is also a huge cause for confidence to know that Richard Howarth’s brilliant directorship will ensure that his orchestra will be suitably energised for the hunt. The concert will take place in Westmorland Hall, Kendal Leisure Centre on Saturday 12th March at 7.30pm. Tickets are obtainable from The Brewery Arts Centre Kendal Box Office (01539 725133) or at the door.

SCHOOL REPORTS

We welcomed the arrival of lent by celebrating Shrove Tuesday in the traditional fashion – making and eating pancakes! In Nursery and Reception, the children have been joining in with festivities of Chinese New Year by tasting traditional Chinese cuisine. They have also been participating in ‘dragon dancing’ and writing Chinese numbers. A special delivery of fortune cookies told the class what the year ahead holds in store for them which was very exciting! Before half term, Years 2 – 6 competed in the Cartmel Peninsula Key Steps Gymnastics competition. Each team came third place overall, with Years 2, 3 and 4 qualifying for the next round of competition. Year 3-4 will visit Chester as part of their topic, ‘The Romans’. Whole School 'People Who Help Us Community Day' Our Creative Curriculum this term is linked to the Christian Value of 'Compassion'. We recently held a whole school event, focusing on this value, to enable the children to share in the experiences of those in our community who demonstrate compassion through either their jobs or voluntary work they undertake. We strongly believe that children learn much more if they are engaged and involved with their learning so, having visitors such as those listed below, we hope to embed a deeper understanding of the importance of not only compassion, but of the work being done for us all, everyday, by people in our community.

We have received support from the following people and organisations: Bridge House; Police Dog Unit; Barrow Food Bank; First Responders; Guide Dogs; Beavers; Mountain Rescue; Local Vets; Fire and Rescue Service

Cartmel Priory Celebrates Students’ Academic Progress The Department for Education (DFE) is moving away from using %5+A*-C with English and maths to measure school performance and will be using a new progress measure called Progress 8 from 2016 onwards. This new measure compares the performance of every student in a school against similar students nationally (based on their performance at the end of primary school). The DFE’s aim is to provide schools with a meaningful measure of their performance based on how well each individual student in the school performs in their best 8 subjects, including English and maths (which will count double). Cartmel Priory School was delighted to be able to

24

celebrate the achievement of its students in terms of value added and progress in the 2015 league tables. Progress data from the league tables shows that students were amongst the top schools in Cumbria and Lancashire for value added this year. What was particularly pleasing was that boys, girls, the most able, middle ability, low

ability, special needs and disadvantaged students all out-performed their peers nationally based on the value added since primary school. This is particularly pleasing given the excellent job our local primary schools do. Congratulations to the class of 2015 and all the best for continued success.

Whilst writing this article Mrs Summers and Mrs Johnson will be visiting Sikles in Nepal. The school is fortunate to have been awarded a grant from the British Council which funds the reciprocal visits. Whilst they are away they will be learning more about the projects identified in our action plan and will be working with staff and students in Nepal, collecting information about daily life, conservation and sustainability. School Council Report: On Tuesday 2nd February the School Council, Rotakids and Pupil Parliament donated food and items to help the people of Barrow who need to use the food bank. We donated 76 kg of food which will provide meals for 31 families. We were shown around the food bank by Alison, a dedicated volunteer, she also let us date, sort and pack the items ready for a family to take away the following day. We enjoyed learning about the set up of the food bank and we talked about the feelings and emotions that people go through when using the service. Thank you to everyone involved.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Hedgehog Highway

Cumbria has long been associated with hedgehogs, with Mrs TiggyWinkle being one of the most beloved characters of author Beatrix Potter. Now, in Miss Potter’s 150th anniversary year, Cumbrian homebuilder, Russell Armer Homes, is getting behind hedgehog conservation by becoming the first homebuilder in the country to create Hedgehog Highways. Russell Armer Homes is working with Hedgehog Street – a partnership between the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) – by supporting its campaign for hedgehog conservation. The homebuilder is leading the way in both Cumbria and Lancashire by ensuring all of its new homes, including those currently being built at

26

large garden is insufficient to support their needs and hedgehogs have to travel around a mile each night in a quest to find enough food and a mate. Each home with a hedgehog gap will have a special sign erected, so any new owners understand the importance of this small hole.

Oversands View (formerly Berrybank) have a 125mm x 125mm gap in their fencing, which allows hedgehogs to move from garden to garden.

Creating ‘Hedgehog Highways’, in this way, is vital for hedgehog conservation as there are now probably less than a million hedgehogs left in the UK. The move to cleaner and tidier gardens, and changes to their habitats in the countryside, has reduced their ability to find nests and food. Hedgehogs need large areas over which to wander, with radio-tracking suggesting this is between 10-30 hectares. Even a very

Russell Armer Homes’ managing director, Martyn Nicholson, says: “We hope homeowners, not living in one of the homes we are building with a ‘hedgehog gap feature’, will follow our lead and remove a brick or cut a gap in their own fencing. It is also something schools and businesses can get involved with and something we are certain children would love to have in their garden. We hope to inspire many dots to be joined up across the two counties, as Hedgehog Highways start to form.” More information about Hedgehog Street is on www.hedgehogstreet.org

What can you do to help protect Red Squirrels? On Friday 4 March at 7.30pm at the United Reform Church Hall, Grange, The Natural History Society is hosting a talk by the Westmorland Red Squirrels charity. Why not come along and find out what you can do to protect our red squirrels. When was the last time you saw a red squirrel around Grange-over-Sands? While occasionally in Eggerslack Woods, around Holker Hall and at Ulpha, their American cousins, the greys, have become common in our gardens and woodlands. Despite their endearing antics, grey squirrels represent a real threat to the survival of our most iconic native mammal. Greys have an unfair advantage over reds by spreading squirrelpox virus, by competing for natural food and breeding more successfully. Reds were once found across the UK yet since introduction in the 19th century greys have reduced them to a few enclaves. Cumbria is one of their last refuges in England. Can you imagine the Lake District without red squirrels? Sustained conservation work by residents, organisations and volunteers across south Cumbria has shown, however, that the grey tide can be turned. Reds are recovering territory once thought lost for ever.

MARCH with Brown Robin

March is one of my favourite months of the year, with usually some frosty mornings and cool sunshine, lifting the spirit’s as spring; “Springs into action”. While writing this in early February, there was a marked increase in bird song around me, with Bullfinch, Chaffinch and Mistle thrush making their presence heard. One little bird I eagerly wait for this time of year is a Warbler, the “Chiffchaff”. An iconic bird to me, as when I hear its song, it heralds the arrival of spring as far as I am concerned. It starts singing shortly after arrival from Africa, depending on the weather. I say singing very loosely, as many warblers have nice songs, such as the Nightingale, Willow warbler and Blackcap, however, the Chiffchaff, simply, “chiffs and chaffs”, which is quite monotonous in comparison. I once highlighted this little bird to one of my assistants many years ago, however over time, to him, this became a loud ticking clock, which eventually drove him to distraction and I would sometimes find him using profanities at the bird. A very wet but mild winter has meant some of our summer visitor’s never left for the continent, such as the Blackcap, which is not uncommon, but Swallow’s have also been noted though the winter too. I actually saw a butterfly

in December. So some of our summer visitors may well be here already. Wild about Grange; A good start as several people have been posting their sightings and we now know that we have Weasels and Barn owls in Grange, so please, keep posting. On the reserve; we are currently reviewing the management plan for the next five years and hopefully extending the coppice and I will be managing the grazing more closely. What could be about? Summer visitors such as the mentioned Chiffchaff, Osprey, wood warbler and if you can, Hawfinch. And Butterflies such as the Brimstone. Thanks, Tony.

LETTERS Dear Editor, SLDC's proposals for the land south of Allithwaite Road

Offer ends next 21 days

SLDC allocated the nine fields to the south of Allithwaite Road, Kents Bank for 202 houses and an undefined number of industrial units in their Local Plan in spite of strong opposition from local residents.

Your February article, about SLDC's Development Brief for this site, states that a member of SLDC's development team said it was unlikely that site access would be from Allithwaite Road due "...to the fact of turning out onto such a fast road...".

This comment contradicts SLDC's draft Development Brief for this site. It states: "...Primary access would be on to Allithwaite Road which provides satisfactory visibility splays if positioned towards the western end of the site, with elevation changes (dips) in the road affecting visibility further east. There could be potentially 2 access points along this side of the site given the site’s size....The speed limit could be reduced with the 30mph zone extending past the site access, or continued all of the way in to Allithwaite to the 30mph zone which starts just outside of the village..."

Site access from Allithwaite Road is inevitable because there are no other suitable road access points to this land. The site's western boundary is formed by the back gardens of properties on Kirkhead Road. Greaves Wood Road bridleway runs alongside the site's southern and eastern boundaries.

Dear Editor, COMING SOON OUR NEW SHOWROOM IN

ULVERSTON!

When we moved to Kents Bank over five years ago we were delighted that it had it's own village shop and Post Office. How many times have I popped in and enjoyed Debbie and Tony's' warm welcome? They have been the perfect local shopkeepers, going the extra mile to look after their customers and serve the local community. Their shop and provided a meeting place for us all too while we went for stamps, papers, and all the little things we suddenly found we needed. Sadly Kents Bank has failed them. Their business is to close soon . Kents Bank will loss the focus of it's community and become just a suburb of Grange.

Dear Editor, On Monday 26th January, I had an extremely nasty fall. The treatment and kindness shown to me at Westmorland General A&E was exemplary. As is my care from the receptionists,

SLDC's draft Development Brief also suggests that there could be a site access road onto Kirkhead Road across a small area of land adjacent to the Greaves Wood Road bridleway junction with Kirkhead Road. This suggestion is contrary to SLDC's Local Plan because the land referred to: ●● Is not part of the designated development site in SLDC's Local Plan.

●● It is within the boundary of Grangeover-Sands Conservation Area 3. ●● It is a small, but important, wildlife corridor between Kirkhead Wood, Greaves Wood and Wart Barrow (all covered by Limestone Pavement Orders) and

●● It is on a bend near the bottom of Kirkhead Road, a narrow residential road, that has little spare capacity for extra traffic and has an awkward junction with the B5277 on the Jack Hill bend.

Comments made by SLDC's planners during public consultation exercises, and information in their planning documents, show that SLDC have a poor understanding of the road access and drainage problems posed by this site. Local residents keep hoping that SLDC planners will undertake a comprehensive infrastructure assessment of Kents Bank rather than relying on the opinions of 'experts' with little knowledge of Kents Bank's geology, drainage and road access problems! Valerie Kennedy On behalf of a group of local residents

I worked for a while in a village convenience store myself. There I saw the daily visits of some elderly and lonely local people, for whom popping into the shop may have been the only time they got out and saw a friendly face. According to the Federation of Small Businesses the villages shop network is losing 300500 shops per year. Allithwaite Post Office is still serving it's community, though I understand their requests for locals to support them have fallen on deaf ears. We had a flyer from them advertising newspaper and grocery delivery yesterday. It would be an excellent idea for Kents Bank residents to avail themselves of this service, which is on a trial basis. Jean Platt , Kents Bank practice nurses and district nurses from Nutwood Medical Practice and I’d like to thank them for their continual treatment, in what is going to take a very long time. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all concerned. Ann Park, Grange.

Dear Editor, Very many thanks to everyone who supported the Coffee Morning at Graythwaite Court. Through your generosity, the magnificent sum of £459-50 was raised to aid the Victims of Flood in Cumbria. Angela and Eric Wright, Grange

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Editor Kents Bank Post Office and Stores ceased trading on the 2nd March after 11 years of cheery and helpful service. The owners Tony and Debbie Ryan have regretfully closed the business following a further decline in trading. Kent Bank has lost an excellent facility through lack of local support. Our best wishes to Tony and Debbie for their future redirection. We will certainly miss you. David and Sandra Boyer

Dear Editor, Kents Bank are mourning the closure of yet another Post Office. Tony and Debbie Ryan have worked so hard over the last 11 years to supplement the P.O retainer with the income from the shop but sadly they can no longer make a living and have had to call it a day. More people are shopping on line and bulk buying, and though they deliver to people living alone far and wide. They can not survive.

Dear Editor, During the past month the District Council has repaired and re-laid the paving slabs surrounding the Duck Hut in the Ornamental Gardens as well as chipping up the branches from the, on going, shrubbery renovation work. On the opposite side of the road the South Lakeland Orchard Group has used the Community Orchard fruit trees to teach pruning techniques to members of the group. The vandalised information

Dear Editor, The Grange Prom Youth Club would like to thank the 52 groups, societies, funding bodies and shops that have supported us for the past 10 years; which has enabled us to provide free access for the people of Grange to use i-play table tennis, skate park and kick about area. Network Rail have also refenced the site from the subway to the tennis court as a community project. For the past two years with the help of 30 volunteers, the promenade Cafe and Continental Landscapes the Group ran the bowling, putting, tennis and crazy golf recreation area for the benefit of the town and visitors, successfully

Kents Bank community will so miss them. The shop is the centre of the exchange of gossip. The closure is inevitable I know but I just want to say 'Thank you' to them. Shop life takes commitment, they have had few holidays. I should like to thank Penny and Beverly for delivering the papers so faithfully too. The enclosed photo of Kents Bank P.O will now be a collectors item. Thank you and well done Yours sincerely, Sylvia Brown board has been replaced thanks to a donation from the South Lakeland Orchard Group and the Civic Society. In the Kents Bank Road car park the old, blocked central drain has been replaced and is now working, and the picnic tables in the Hampsfell Car Park have been renovated by the District Council. The Environment Agency has cleaned out and checked the outfalls from the Ornamental Gardens Pond into the Bay. Ron Shapland.

doubling the income from £5K to £10K, re-investing the money in the site.

We are now disbanding as a group having achieved our goals, leaving the site and hut in excellent condition. We are handing it back to Grange Town Council and they have decided to franchise it out to Horton Leisure, from Horton in Ribblesdale in Lancashire. We hope they will continue to provide the same level of service that the public has enjoyed and valued over the past two years. Liz Cornford, Chairperson Clare Bell, Secretary Mark Hadwin, Treasurer. Bill Wearing & Judith Shapland, Committee members.

LEGAL TALK With

Joanne Armer Solicitor

MEET YOUR NEW LOCAL SOLICITOR Now full time at our Grange Office Can I leave my property to anyone I want?

The law in England and Wales tends to support you doing what you want in your will, in contrast to most other European countries which have ‘forced heirship’ rules meaning that property must be left to particular family members. As usual with the law in the UK, it is not all as easy as that. We often see clients who want to make a Will leaving their assets to someone other than those that you would normally expect; the most common exclusions being their children, but sometimes even their wife or husband. You might have sound reasons. Children might not have bothered with you for years and then pop up after your death. Family fallouts may have left you feeling so upset with them that you want to make sure they don’t get a penny from you. But, there is always a risk that of the Will being challenged by family members that you have left out. There are various grounds for challenging a Will, including that you did not understand what you were doing or that you were pressured in to it. There is also the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (IPFDA) which protects the rights of close family members, in particular children. The IPFDA allows a disinherited child to bring a claim if they can show their parent’s will fails to make ‘such financial provision as would be reasonable in all the circumstances to enable the child to maintain themselves in a manner suitable to their circumstances’. Courts are reluctant to make awards to able-bodied children who are in full employment but that does not mean an award will not be made in the right circumstances. The recent case of Ilott v Mitson demonstrates the operation of the IPFDA nicely. The Court awarded a daughter money from her mother’s estate even though mother had clearly indicated the reason for excluding her daughter, based on no communication for many years. The Court found it was unreasonable for the mother not to provide for her daughter in her ‘desperate financial position’. This does not mean you should not disinherit a person if you want to. You need proper advice to make sure you are aware of the consequences and the best way to implement your wishes to make sure they are respected as much as possible. We can provide you with all the advice you need, including the risk of a challenge by a disinherited beneficiary after your death and help you structure your planning, including your Will, in the best possible way. Come to see us to discuss what you need, don’t forget our Grange branch is now at 2 Regent House, the first meeting is always free.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP

This month we have a sports section. Please see pages …. for club reports on golf, bowling, croquet, tennis, running and hound trailing. Grange Probus Club

On February 8th, Dr Rob David gave a talk entitled: In search of Arctic wonders, with special reference to the Cumbrians who had been involved in Arctic exploration and the part played by Whitehaven in both exploration and whaling. He began by talking about Skeffington Lutwidge who took his ship to the Arctic in 1773. On his crew list was mentioned Midshipman Horatio Nelson aged sixteen. At that time it was believed that the continuous summer sun would keep the North Pole ice free and that it would only be necessary for a ship to break through a surrounding circle of ice. Also mentioned in the talk was Sir John Barrow whose memorial overlooks Ulverston.

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

Jerusalem was sung opening the February meeting which was well attended.Glenda Clark won the January competition and Elizabeth Armstrong the February contest. The Committee proposed that £500 should be donated to the Cumbrian flood victims and the Club agreed unanimously. Our current charity for the forthcoming year is to be Ostley House, to support them in their building of a new dementia unit for the elderly. Everyone was in agreement with this. An organ donation form was circulated to all members for them to sign and return. Various interest groups and activities were highlighted for the month and birthday cards were distributed. Sandra Kendall, chair of the North Lonsdale Embroiderers Guild gave an enthusiastic account of embroidery as a hobby supported by some fantastic samples of her work ,which were admired by all.

Probus is for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members welcome. Chairman - Russell Bloxsom 34595, Secretary - Ewen Cameron 32319.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 1 St at 2.0 when Gregory Simmister will entertain us with his version of George Formby.

Grange & District Photographic Society

The group meet every Friday 2-4pm in the Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, in Grange. Do you or a family member/friend suffer from cancer or a life-shortening illness? Are you caring for someone or are you recently bereaved? St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group is here for you. Newton & Field Broughton WI

The February meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI was well attended and the business was soon completed. The speaker for the evening was Dr Nick gent. He gave a very interesting insight into his work which is managing disasters throughout the world with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Following a disaster it is important that communication is established as soon as possible. This then enables the various services to be co-ordinated in the reestablishment of the area. Tourists visit such areas and have to be managed. Transport for rescue services and food is needed; fatalities have to be dealt with and injured and sick people require medical attention. Children need schools. The restoration of water, sanitation and housing follow to enable the local population to return to a normal lifestyle. Volunteers and charities need to be organised to provide an efficient service. Plans then need to be put in place should a similar disaster occur again. The March meeting on Wednesday 9th will be our member, Joan Bentley, demonstrating ‘Springtime in Flowers’. It will be in Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

Lower Holker WI

As part of our 90th Year celebrations, arrangements are being made with all members and past members to enjoy a lunch together on March 23rd. Further celebrations are also being planned. At the February meeting, Joan Bentley gave us a hint of Spring with "Fun with Flowers". The competition was for a buttonhole. The conventional floral entries were accompanied by an attractive and very complex machine embroidered "true" buttonhole!

Flookburgh Over 60's

February gave us en entertaining afternoon talk, when Janet Niepokojczycka recounted her 1000 mile journey from Kendal to London and back through Wales accompanied by her trusty packhorse Roy. Original post roads were used ,unless replaced by motorways !!

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild

The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met on Tuesday 9th of February. After a brief business meeting Sandra Kendall invited members to share their ideas for a project based on Capability Brown that is being run by the National Guild. There were many different interpretations, all at varying stages of completion. Later in the morning beads, threads and fabric which had been given to the group by the son of a past member who had recently died were made available. Members made a donation for charity. The next meeting is on Tuesday 8th of March with Sandie Mayer when we will be working on a Stump Work Butterfly. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month and new members are most welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229-861800.

Grange and District Art Society

The Miss Garrett competition in February brought us the winners of the categories set this year – the winners being chosen by members voting for their favourites in each section. Eddie O’Neil’s knife painting of a steam engine came first in the “Monochrome” category. David Pearson’s picture of a swan in the “Animals or Birds” group and an amusing interpretation of “Tea for Two” in the Abstract still life section were voted first in their categories. The overall winner was David Pearson. Many thanks to all the members who contributed work and voted, making for an enjoyable afternoon. On March 3rd the artist Peter Threlfall is making a return visit to demonstrate landscape painting in acrylics. On March 24th Andy Mortimer takes on the difficult task of appraising members own paintings. These visits are interspersed with our regular general painting sessions. New members and visitors to our demonstration afternoons are always welcome. Weekly meetings are held on Thursdays 2-4pm in the Allithwaite Community Centre. The monthly Friday evening group enjoyed an oil painting demonstration by Graham Twyford, well-known local artist from Barrow. The next meeting is 4th March Contact for more details Angela Tel: 33842 or Elizabeth Tel: 35163 or on the society website. Contact for Friday evenings Pat Tel: 35811

Grange Lecture Society

Engineer and railway enthusiast Brian Wilson has long researched developments in rail transport. In a well illustrated, at times humorous, presentation given on 26th January and entitled ‘Monorail to Maglev and Beyond’, Professor Wilson expertly traced the history of monorail in its various forms from primitive beginnings in 1815 to its recent most sophisticated version in Japan which uses magnetic levitation (the Maglev of the title) to achieve speeds of well over 300mph. He ended by considering projected future developments. The remote Russian Arctic was travel expert Mo Holland’s subject on 9th February when she spoke engagingly about Murmansk, with its contrasting darkness in winter and midnight sun in summer, Archangel, important as a port and for its processed timber, and the impressive Solovetsky island monastery in the White Sea, now a UNESCO heritage site. She outlined their changing history, described the inhabitants’ way of life and showed photographs of, among much else, Orthodox churches, museums full of icons, and memorials to the fallen. On 8th March, following a short AGM, travel writer John Pilkington will give the final lecture of the season entitled ‘A Balkan Adventure’. Proceedings begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Cartmel Art Society

In January, our workshops resumed with Les Darlow showing us how to use soft pastels using simple but effective techniques to create atmosphere in “Wild and Free Skies “. Later in the month we had a fun afternoon exercising our drawing skills in “ Luck of the Draw”. Each of us chose four pictures from a choice of given topics and had thirty minutes to draw each one. Members showed intense concentration in their observations with some good results. In February, members had a wonderful day drawing with Lakes artist Valerie Wood. Valerie showed us what other products are available that can be mixed with graphite. We practised blending pencils to make tonal grades to create wood, tree bark and feather textures.

Lower Holker Village Hall – March 2016

The Quiz Night on Thursday 28th January was very successful, and raised about £75.00 for the Cumbria Flood Relief Fund. Many thanks to all who took part, and ensured that the evening was so successful. Final figure of the amount raised will be available in April’s issue. Our next event will be the concert by the Ulverston High School Swing Band on Saturday 16th April. The doors open at 7.00 pm and the concert starts at 7.30 pm. This is always a very enjoyable evening. Tickets are £7.00 per person, and are available at the door or in advance from Geoff on 015395 58883, Duncan 015395 58385, Rhona 015395 58636, or the hall on 015395 58304. Tickets can be reserved and paid for on the night. And as usual bring your own drinks and nibbles, and don’t forget your glasses. And lastly if anyone would like to join the committee then please ring Rhona on 58636. We have ten meetings a year and the time required is small, but very enjoyable.

Grange Rotary

Rotakids, which is the junior branch of Rotary, are going from strength to strength in Grange. Rotakids from Grange Primary organised a collection of food for the Food Bank in Barrow and took along 73 kg of food which is sufficient to feed thirty one families. Whilst there they joined a discussion on how it feels to need help from a Food Bank. Rotarian Ken Thompson accompanied them along with two teachers. At the time of going to press, nearly seventy people are booked in for the Defibrillator Training Day on the 23rd February. A good number helped by the insertion in Grange Now. The club also appreciates the help they have received from Netherwood Hotel which is the venue for the training. The Club had a talk on 13th January from Sarah Miles of Bendrigg Lodge, which specialises in outdoor courses for people with a disability. The talk was well received and a donation from members was taken to Bendrigg by our President. A further talk on 27th January was given on Air Traffic Control by Mike Molyneaux. In January we also welcomed two new members, Linda and Mike Butterworth, and a further two members are being inducted on the 17th February. As always anyone interested in knowing more about our club should take a look at our website (Rotary Club of Grange over Sands).

Grange Over Sands NSPCC

We are now coming to the end of our financial year and feel overwhelmed by the generosity of people who support the NSPCC's efforts to protect vulnerable children in this area. Throughout the year we have raised, with our various events, £4,264.24p. Then, in December, Mr and Mrs Voakes and family, once again decorated their house in Cark with a magnificent display of Christmas lights and, despite the atrocious wet and windy weather, collected £3,715.16p from the public, which they then donated to our local NSPCC. We do appreciate all the work that has gone on behind the scenes,

such as the efforts of Mr and Mrs Voakes and family, and the kindness of donors. Thank you, everyone! Our work continues so don't forget the ‘Colours Fun(d) Raising Fashion Show’ in Cartmel Village Hall on Wednesday, 9th March. Doors open 7pm

Grange Forum

Contrary to our printed programme for February we heard, on the 2nd, about the work of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau - a most informative presentation by Martin Cooper. On 9th February, we learnt about, ‘It’s a Crying Game’ taking us behind the scenes of a Town Cryer. Looking forward now into the coming month of March on Tuesday 1st, we are only getting, ‘Half a Story’ about the history of British Postal History. professor Brian Wilson will be putting his stamp on this intriguing title. The 8th March, we drink a toast to the History of Tea served by Sally Farrington. The 15th sees a welcome return of Andrew Lowe to tell us about Lakeland Bridges. On the 22nd, we hope to fly high with Ramblings of an Aircraft Engineer by Eric Morton followed by our AGM. Please note the start time will be 10am. If you are a club member, try hard to attend this especially important meeting.

Witherslack WI

After usual WI business presided over by Mrs Caroline Blee there was a talk by Ian Robinson of Cartmel Cheeses. Based in Unsworth Yard in Cartmel the shop sells hand made cheeses mostly sourced in the UK and the locally made St James sheep's milk cheese by Martin Gott of Holker. Mr Robinson brought along four cheeses for the members to try and explained the different processes by which they were made. Stichelton, a blue Stilton type, Tunworth, a Camembert type, Wescombe Cheddar and Hawes Wensleydale. A very interesting, informative and delicious presentation. Upcoming events, a Jumble Sale on Saturday 5th March and a Kitty Brown Fashion Show on 6th May. Both in the parish hall. Next meeting, March 8th, NGS gardens and history by Diane Hewitt of NGS Cumbria.

Cartmel & District Flower Club

On February 15th we welcomed the very entertaining Norma Halpin from Barrow with ‘Love is in the Air’. Her first arrangement was a welcome basket, when she began her career flower arrangements were rarely sent, instead pot plant arrangements were sent as a gift. A lovely long low arrangement followed using a range of beautiful pink gerbera, roses, carnations and lisianthus depicting the lovers Romeo and Juliet. On stage was a large white stand her husband thought was just a load of wood until she pointed out it spelt LOVE ,three low arrangements of bright orange roses, gerbera, carnations and Lillie one to be placed on each letter a most unusual display. Using a beautiful stem of green orchids, willow, white roses and Lillie two containers were used to make tall elegant arrangements. The final arrangement Norma said was her favourite, as she loved wedding and church work ,the beautiful large gold container was bought in Cartmel some years ago, using all white and cream flowers gerbera, carnations, roses and Lillie the stage was full of beautifully arranged flowers. The next meeting March 21st in Cartmel Village Hall at 2pm Liz Broad Merseyside her demonstration entitled"Le Tour" visitors and new members welcome.

Grange Soroptimists

Members held a very successful “Say Cheese” evening with a talk by Cartmel Cheeses, a cheese tasting, wine, desserts and a quiz. £670 was raised for the club charities which include Sense (the Deaf blind charity) and Womankind Worldwide. Many thanks to Cartmel Cheeses and Cartmel sticky Toffee pudding for their support.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society Rocks, Lakes and Early History (of Cartmel)

Our first talk of 2016 drew a packed audience. Ken Howarth gave a very informative talk with excellent slides about the very early history of Cartmel. He linked the geology of the area to the local history. He based his talk on two booklets on the subject written by Murray Mitchell. Ken explained the geology of the area and described the hard Bannisdalerock and carboniferous limestone which surrounds the area. The glacial period had left the area with numerous drumlins and pools. The stone in the drumlins was used to build local stone walls and the Priory was built on an outcrop of Bannisdale rock surrounded by lakes left by the glacier. Ken pointed out the edges of the lakes in Cartmel which can still be seen today. Ken then showed how fossils found in the Priory’s sandstone proved that the stone came from a quarry near Holker and Cark, called Quarry Flat.He added that the quarry was much bigger than it is today with the stone probably extending beyond the railway. Next lecture: 3 March at 7.30 in Cartmel Village Hall - Ian Boyle on Archaeology in the Duddon Valley.

Grange & District Lions Club

Our Grand raffle will start at the beginning of May. As usual we will have a fantastic list of prizes, donated by local businesses and supporters. Every year they come up trumps, knowing that every penny raised goes to charity. We remain eternally grateful to them, as with those who buy tickets. Our annual Golf Event with all proceeds going to St Mary’s Hospice is already scheduled for Friday 12th August at Grange Fell Golf Club. Registration and booking details will be available at the end of March. Grange Lions will be running the raffle at the Victoria Hall on Saturday 2nd April during the ‘VOCE’ concert. All raffle proceeds going to N.W. Air Ambulance. On the social side, we recently enjoyed a weekend away in Blackpool. Most of the members attended, and despite the very strong winds, it was a great success. Our next little venture on Wednesday 30th March, is Ten Pin Bowling in Morecambe followed by a fish and chip supper. This is also open to our FOGL (Friends of Grange Lions) members. Anyone wishing to become a FOGL is very welcome. Annual subscription is only £5 per year. Contact Peter Clough on 32048 or David Khan on 34252. We have one or two exciting new initiatives in the pipeline which we hope to reveal in the next issue. watch this space.

COFFEE CLUB REPORT

In January we had been looking forward to hearing about the work of A Rocha – a Christian conservation charity – but unfortunately the speaker was taken ill the day before his visit and was unable to come. However Alan Jones kindly stepped in and showed a video of a presentation recorded at the South East Asia regional conference on Creation Care in Manila in 2014 by Dave Bookless, the CEO of A Rocha, which was entitled “God’s Word to the Church” and which for many of us provided a new insight into a Christian view of creation and man’s responsibility for stewardship of the earth and its resources. This lasts for 45 minutes and can be viewed on the A Rocha international website (www.arocha.org) .

On March 15th we are looking forward to a repeat visit from Linda Robinson, founder of the Goat Project, who will be talking about “the Shepherd’s Psalm unveiled”. The meeting is at 10.30 am at Abbot Hall Hotel preceded by coffee from 10 am – and all are welcome.

Allithwaite Community Centre & Playing Fields Committee

Please note due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to cancel our Evening Dance planned for March, we will be welcoming Bill Johnston, Accordionist in April - look out for details next month. Anyone interested in joining our 100 Club for 2016 please contact details below, cost £10 for 12 months, 3 money prizes each month & an additional one at Christmas. Bookings for any occasion at the Centre please contact Heather on 07582 706353.

Grange WI

We are on the move! The good news is that our membership is increasing but the bad news is that we need a bigger place for our meetings. So we are trying out a couple of new venues – the first will be the Masonic Hall for the March meeting. The Hall is on Hampsfell Road near the junction with Charney Well Lane. Brenda Austin recently gave us a very entertaining talk about her collection of tins – made for biscuits, chocolates and beverages. Every tin had a special story and we learnt a lot about the social history surrounding the tins and their contents. We will be making our own flower arrangements at the March meeting. New members are very welcome. Please contact Margaret on Grange 36735.

Grange and District U3A

Andy Lowe, formerly Conservation Officer with the Lake District National Park Authority and a popular guest of the U3A ‘made a Grand Entrance’ in January when he looked at a range of historic Lakeland doorways at our general meeting. He showed the changes in design since the C16th, reflecting the wealth of occupants, the fashions of the times and the type of building material in the locale. In February, Howard Graves presented ‘Four Hawaiian Islands’, exploring the geology, history and nature of four islands in the Hawaiian chain. The volcanic origins of the islands, the tropical climate and the social and political history, including the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in WW2 made a fascinating story. We held a successful quiz evening with pie and pea supper at the Victoria Hall in January, courtesy of Bob Lear. Many of the interest groups entered teams; the competition was won by the birdwatchers, although the dubious scoring system led some to question the result! An informal ‘French Cafe’ on a Saturday has been tried for those seeking to brush up on their holiday language skills. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange .

Grange Garden Society

At our February meeting Dr Trevor Pierce illustrated the adaptability, the variety and the beauty of Ferns in an illustrated talk, Fern Cultivation and Propagation. Ferns are all around us in the crevices of walls, on the surface of canals, even by the sea. None of them produce fruits or seeds they multiply by producing spores. Although Ferns were the passion of the Victorians who grew them and used their form widely for decorative purposes they are once more in fashionable gardens growing on and in and through tree stumps in what are known as a Stumpery. Dr Pierce showed how ferns can be propagated by division of creeping stems, taking baby ferns(bulbils) from fronds and division of mature plants. He is a member of the British Pteridological society which was founded in the Lake District in 1891, it offers a spore exchange for true enthusiasts together with information and advice. The structural form and colour of the fern was revealed as an asset to the garden in all seasons. On 18th March, 2pm at the URC Hall, David Metcalf will talk about “Vegetables my Way”

Grange Old Tyme Dance Society

This year we are planning to celebrate 60 years since our society was founded – unless you know differently Our membership records go back to 1955 when Mr and Mrs Sylvester, who managed the Berners Close Hotel, started the dances probably as an additional amenity for the hotel.. That first year there were 80 members – 36 “unattached” females, only 2 single men and 21 couples. Some things don't change! We have earlier financial records going back another 5 years to 1949/50 when the membership cost 10 shillings - £1 per couple and the room hire only £2 a week. So is our club actually 65 years old or does anyone have family whose memories extend earlier than that? We'd love to hear from you – telephone 015395 35512 or email me: elisabeth. christopher@gmail.com

Arnside and Arnside Knott WI

The February meeting of Arnside and Arnside Knott W.I. was attended by 34 members including new members and 3 guests. A most interesting and moving account of Rural life in Nepal, was given by Stephen Cottam. He told of the involvement of himself and his wife with the Saramilla Trust, who give help and advice with setting up Schools, Education and Farming, in remote areas. The vote of thanks was given by Sanda Humphery who was the winner of the competition - a photograph of a mountain. The 2015/2016 Scrapbook is completed and entered for judging. The Federation Newsletter was read and bookings made for events, at The Villa, half yearly Council meeting and Group meeting. A return visit by the duo, Nostalgia will be held on 13th February. The Post Christmas meal is on Thursday 25th February at Crooklands Hotel. Plans are underway for the Westmorland Show. The next meeting is on Monday 14th. March.

A Landscape Photography Workshop is to be held at St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston, run by popular, local businessman, Colin Reynolds. Aimed at photographers who are looking to improve their landscape photography, both on location and then in a classroom setting, reviewing and editing your pictures. Bob Henfrey is also running another Painting Workshop at his own Studio in Kendal. Places are limited to only 4 learners per session, so book your place now, at only £35 for

Thanks again to you all for your patience over the last few weeks, whilst I have been ‘manning the fort’ on my own and for your continued support, for which we are extremely grateful.
