09 New manager for Prom recreation ground Did you know that Grange Now has come out every month without fail for almost 25 years. This month I want to tell you about the people who contribute to making this paper happen. We have a full time writer, Sharon, who follows up stories throughout the month, talks to the people involved and gets to the heart of local issues. In addition she will edit articles and reports that are sent in from clubs, societies, schools and so on. Not forgetting the all important what's on list which is an arduous task as information comes from many different sources. As deadline approaches, Sharon does a terrific job pulling all the articles and images together, checking for accuracy and that captions are correct and so on. It is a demanding task and requires great attention to detail. Perhaps most difficult of all is to deliver a balanced and fair report of events, without bias. Meanwhile over on the advertising side Kerstin will be managing over 200 customers. With everything from small lineage adverts of just 2 or 3 words right through to the large colourful display adverts, the task of talking to advertisers and making sure they get exactly what is required in terms of attractive and accurate adverts is immense. Sometimes our advertisers provide their own artwork but more often we design the adverts. So proofs are sent out and returned until everything is exactly right. Perhaps the most challenging part is to achieve 100% satisfied customers against the clock, as the paper has to go to print on time. On the apple mac computer, Glenn, our graphic designer pulls all the elements together from both the editorial and advertising side. This is where all the hard work from Sharon and Kerstin comes to fruition as the pages take shape and the paper comes to life. It's a very skilled job and Glenn is largely responsible for the visible appearance of the finished paper that is delivered through your door. Finally and most importantly Sarah ensures that all invoices are sent out and payments are recorded properly. She not only works on Grange Now but also our sister papers in Ulverston and Windermere so has to juggle the demands of all three. Grange Now is a real team effort by local people who live and work in the area and are all committed to providing a quality newspaper every month. I know that Grange Now is appreciated by many people so on behalf of them and myself I would like to thank those people who make it happen.

Esplanade to close for two weeks

Town Council file objection As reported in two previous editions, the owner of the former toilet block on the Promenade has applied for ‘change of use status’ from, ‘Artist’s Studio’ to ‘holiday apartment’. All councillors unanimously Resolved to file, an ‘Objection’ at the meeting on Monday 14th March.

Below are extracts from the ‘Objection’. You can read it in full on South Lakeland District Council website under planning application number: SL/2016/0116.

Thanks to Councillor Pete Endsor for bringing to the attention of Grange Town Council, the fact that the Esplanade will be closed, for approximately two weeks, from 11th April 2016.

OBJECTION

Grange Town Council OBJECTS to the application on the grounds that it is breach of Planning Regulations, specifically:

National Grid need to replace the gas main, and they informed us that they have put leaflets through the doors of those who will be affected. The leaflet states:

This essential maintenance work is part of the national program to update the gas infrastructure within the whole country and is necessary to ensure both the security and safety of the gas supply in your area.

We have to renew the existing system and as such, our excavations and methods are determined by the present layout of the gas infrastructure and will necessitate excavations on private land as well as the public highway.

Don’t forget!

The next Foodbank collection will take place this Sunday, 3rd April. The last collection raised enough food for a staggering 696 meals. St Paul’s Meeting Room, St Paul’s Church, Grange. 1-3pm.

This is extensive roadworks and there will be heavy plant, machinery, vans and wagons operating in the working area and noise and disruption is inevitable but we will move our works on as promptly as possible. We will reinstate all materials that we have had to remove to the specification

Councillor Surgery

The next councillor surgery will take place on Saturday 16th April. Councillor Tricia Thomas will be available between 10 - 12 noon. The surgery will take place at the library. If the library is unable to open for any reason, it will be held in the Victoria Hall.

required by the Local Authority. Grange Now understands traffic will be diverted from The Esplanade onto Kents Bank Road. If you have any queries please contact: National Grid Customer Service contact number 0161 703 1000.

Volunteer meeting

Friends of Kents Bank Station & Foreshore, will be meeting on 13th April 2016 at 10am, at, Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank. The group are looking for volunteers to help revive the garden on platform 1 of Kents Bank station.

1. This has planning permission for use as an artist’s studio. The auction details informed the applicant that it was not suitable for residential purposes, and the pre-application advice from Development Management was that it was not suitable for either temporary or permanent residence. The applicant said the studio would only be used by him for painting, and planning permission was given on that basis. It is clear from the holiday let adverts on the internet that the applicant did not convert it into an artist’s studio, nor comply with the original permitted design...

2. The reasons proposed by the applicant’s agent for granting planning permission are without substance and outweighed by the overall negative impact on visitors’ experience of the Prom. We are particularly concerned that a viewing room with large obscured glass windows would be situated next to a children’s playground and near a popular teenagers’ recreation area...

3. The other potential negative impacts of its use as a holiday let are substantial and include illegal vehicle access, unauthorised use and disturbance of surrounding public gardens , lack of waste disposal facilities, noise and light disturbance in the late evenings, and unwelcome one-way ‘surveillance’ of Prom users...

Investment Matters By Andrew Throughton APFS

Grange now | APRIL 2016 - Next deadline 13th MAY

Maximising the returns, be it growth, income or a combination of the two, from savings and investments is not only about selecting the best performing funds or the savings account paying the best rate of interest; it is equally as important to ensure that they remain as tax efficient as possible so more of the return is retained by you. It is difficult to cover all the tax saving opportunities within an article such as this; the following are two common, and perhaps straightforward, options.

An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is an ideal way to invest; any tax paid on interest can be reclaimed within an ISA and capital growth is free of capital gains tax. Up to £15,240 per individual can be placed in an ISA this tax year. As the tax year end is just under a month away (from date of publication) this means that you can shelter up to £30,480 from taxation within the space of six weeks; indeed a couple between them could shelter up to £60,960.

Every year you can take a gain on an investment without paying tax on the realised gain; this is one particular allowance that is often overlooked, and therefore lost. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is only charged when gains

exceed your annual allowance, currently £11,100 per individual; capital gains (growth rather than income) is therefore free of tax up to this level. Multiple allowances can be used for jointly held assets, allowing further gains to be made tax free. Any realised gain in excess of this is taxed at 18%, or 28% for those that exceed the basic rate tax band (capital gains in excess of the annual allowance are added to other income).

Careful year on year tax planning can ensure tax on gains are minimised or preferably avoided altogether. As already noted, CGT planning can be doubly effective for jointly held assets. An investment should never be made simply from a tax position; however, making the most of tax allowances coupled with successful investment planning will compound returns year on year.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Edwardian Festival get in the spirit The date for this year’s event is Saturday 11th June and the hardworking committee are, as ever, requesting more volunteers to help out. It is astonishing to note that this successful and well attended event is put together by just 5 people. That’s an awful lot of organising, and work, for a handful of people, so the committee would love just a few more people to turn out and give a bit of a hand. If you can help by putting up posters, helping on the gate on the day, joining the committee or being the tour guide on the ‘big red bus’, please contact Mary Ann on 015395 32265. There is also still time to book a stall which you can also do by contacting Mary Ann for a booking form. The festival is a great event for the town and it’s so good to see all ages coming together, enjoying fun games and activities and generally getting in the spirit. Talking about getting into the spirit of things, it goes without saying that dressing up in clothes from the Edwardian period is what makes it the Edwardian Festival, otherwise it’s just a fair. If you need to hire an outfit please get in touch with Pauline Wilson on 07976 898 626.

St George’s Day Celebrations Based in Grange over Sands Don't forget the celebrations for St. George's day on April 23rd and 24th. The Chamber of Trade has been working hard to organise a two day event on Grange playing fields for the towns first ever St George's Day celebrations. Bring the family and see Bay Search & Rescue’s vehicles and Grange’s fire engine. There will be a display with birds of prey, balloon animal making, face painting, Punch & Judy show and children’s train rides as well a range of children’s games and funfair rides. There will be a bar run by the Keg & Kitchen, food and delicatessen stalls. Sit down with a drink and food and watch the jousting and children’s races, or get your hands dirty in the tug of war. Grange tennis club will be giving taster tennis sessions for anyone interested, and Allithwaite Running Club are organising 4 mini-races for

children: under-6, under-8, under-10 and under-12. The races will be free to enter on the day and there will be prizes, naturally, for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each race.

There will be Morris dancing with Crook Morris and a performance by the Elite School of Dancing as well as singing by Bay Community Singers. Renowned lecturer, Dr. Sam Richards will be giving a talk on the history of St. George.

Fly the flag and join everyone on Grange Playing Fields between 10am - 4pm and there will be all day parking in Berners Close car park for £1.20.

New grooming manager for Lamberts Sian and Brian Lambert, at Lamberts Pet Store, are delighted to announce that their dog grooming salon is now open full time.

Sian told Grange Now: “ I really want to thank all my customers who have been so loyal and understanding through what has been, with the exception of the birth of James, a really awful time. I’m delighted to say that the salon will soon be open much more as we have decided to employ a grooming salon manager, Zoe, to

enable us to open full time.

New library for Grange School

On Thursday 10th March, Grange Primary School proudly unveiled their new library and offices, in a well attended ceremony. Teachers, support staff, governors, Friends of Grange School, neighbours, parents and, of course, the children all gathered to see the Right Reverend Robert Freeman, Bishop of Penrith, cut the ribbon to officially open the newly built front entrance and offices.

Headteacher, Phillipa Summers, thanked everyone who had supported and helped make this venture happen and she also paid special tribute to former Chair of Governors, Robin Webster, who very sadly passed away late last year. Robin had played a key role in bringing about this project and his

family were in attendance on his behalf. Without the various sponsors: Garfield Weston Foundation, The Hadfield Charitable Trust, The Clark Foundation, Charles Godwin Trust, Councillor Bill Wearing, Bay Villa Trust, Furness Building Society, Grange Pumpkin Walk - the Keg & Kitchen, Grange Kids Club, Friends of Grange School (FRoGS), Grange Edwardian Festival, South Lakes Services, The MitchellParr Family, Percy Wignall, the parents, carers and the supporters of the school this library wouldn’t have been built. The ribbon over the entrance to the library was cut by the oldest and youngest pupil at the school: Year 6 pupil, Joe and from Reception class, Jessica.

Robin Webster Memorial Slide show

Many of you either knew of, or were friend to, former Cartmel Priory school teacher, Robin Webster. Before his untimely death last year, Robin had been planning a slideshow: ‘ A history of activities and happenings at Grange Primary School between 1968 and the present’.

Former Headteacher, Colin Milner and current Head, Phillipa Summers, have decided to go ahead with the slideshow in Robin’s memory. Colin told Grange Now: “Robin was Chair of Governors at the school, and not only did his two children attend Grange in the 1990’s but he was a former pupil himself. He was planning to do this last year as he wanted to raise funds to purchase books for the new school library project, so we will ask people of our community to come along and support this event, and perhaps make an offering as a memorial to all Robin did.” The slideshow and exhibition of photographs will take place in Grange Primary School on Monday 25th April at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Doing their bit

You can ‘clean’ at any time but a weekend of ‘de-littering’ took place on 4th-6th March. Bloom group member Jan Tomlinson got in touch to let us know about a group of residents, led by Colin and Chrissie Greaves, who decided to clear the path behind the skips on Berners Close Car Park.

Colin and Chrissie told Grange Now: ”We wanted to create a step-free access to the prom, all the way from Thornfield Road, for cyclists, parents with buggies, and wheelchair users to enjoy. So on Saturday, 5th March, eight of us, provided with bags, gloves and litter-pickers from SLDC, enjoyed fine weather (and the goodwill of those filling the skips!) as we set-to and pruned bushes back, filled six huge

bags of rubbish, and cleared the path of years of leaf-mould, mud and debris. There was a great sense of achievement and neighbourliness, which we would have missed if we'd waited for contractors to do the job.” Colin, Chrissie and the gang aren’t the only ones who are cleaning up our streets, Grange Now’s much valued bulk deliverer, Tom Ross, has also taken it upon himself to spruce things up a bit. Tom was seen outside the Grange Now offices picking up litter and he told me: “I walk down to the station and back every day and I thought I may as well pick up the rubbish as I go”. Well done to everyone who is doing their bit.

Sky dive for Dani Local solicitor, Kelly Walsh, is set to do a tandem skydive on 23rd or 24th April to raise money for breast cancer. Kelly lost her friend, Dani, last month and she is doing this jump in her memory. She told Grange Now: “Dani, who was an ambassador and voice for Breast Cancer Now, was only 32 when she died last month. She was diagnosed with secondary tumours 3 weeks before she died, after being told, on New Year’s Eve, that

IN GOOD HANDS On Saturday 19th March, all the great facilities on the Prom will re-open for the Summer season under the capable management of Horton Leisure Management. Grange Now caught up with owner, Michael Gudgeon, as he sets about getting everything ready for opening. Not a stranger to this type of business, for the past 6 years Michael, alongside Lakes Parish Council, has been successfully running the White Platts Recreation Ground in Ambleside.

He told us: “We are very pleased to have been awarded the contract to run the Prom recreation ground, the site has great potential and we look forward to bringing new ideas to the site. During the school holidays we are looking at crazy golf competitions and tennis coaching. I intend to keep the price of the day ticket the same for this coming

season (£5 for 2 adults and 2 children) but, in line with what the former Prom Recreation Group were going to do, I’m raising the season ticket by £5 to £30.”

The Season Ticket stills offers excellent value for money, as you can use of all the facilities: i-play, tennis courts, crazy golf, putting green, bowling green and basketball courts for 2 adults and 2 children from March to October, working out at just over £4 a month. What’s more, both the day and season ticket entitles families to stay and play all day long.

Tickets are now available from the green hut next to the tennis courts. Manning the hut will be local illustrator and designer, Piers Harper, alongside Melissa Green. Grange Now spoke to Piers on opening day and he told us: ”I’m really going to enjoy working here. How could I not? Just look at the view!” The hut will be open 7 days a week (weather permitting) from 19th March until Sunday 30th October. While I was there, the Shackleton family from Morecambe were there enjoying a day out with the kids. They were delighted with the £5 ticket, and thought it great value for the whole family. They all enjoyed the crazy golf and putting green. There was also a husband and wife enjoying a ‘friendly’ putting

competition, but they didn’t fancy their 15 minutes of fame so declined to give their names. Despite being from Salisbury they bought a season ticket saying they come to Grange by train during the summer. As well as the Prom Recreation Ground and White Platts in Ambleside, Horton Leisure are also responsible for the ice cream trolleys in Car parks around Windermere and Coniston. They also run the ice cream kiosk at the top of lake Windermere selling the world famous Kelly's of Cornwall ice cream.

Standard and painted finishes are available. You can choose between 64mm and 89mm louvres and from one of the elegant standard finishes or maybe one of the stunning 16 painted colour finishes. No matter what colour scheme you have, you’ll find a colour to suit your interior. Drive to Arrive in Safe Hands Local driving instructor, Peter Stas, has recently retired from “Drive to Arrive” after setting up the business 12 years ago, on his retirement from the police. During that time he has nurtured many learners to successfully pass their test as well as helping other drivers through assessments, confidence building and different levels of training. Peter said, “I was fortunate that I was able to use my police skills and experience to build a successful business. I have enjoyed my time helping all my clients and got great satisfaction seeing their skills grow, so that they could achieve their goals by being able to drive safely and confidently. I would like to thank all those people who entrusted me to help them

acquire the important life skill of safe driving”.

Drive to Arrive will continue in the safe hands of Peter’s daughter, Donna Watson, who has worked in the business for the last nine years as an Approved Driving Instructor and ROSPA Advanced Driver. Donna has benefitted fromPeter’s police expertise and methods, which she incorporates in her training. She is able to teach all levels from learners to advanced, and all aspects in between. So if you want advice, or would like to discuss what training is available, give Donna a ring – see advert on back cover.

Raising expectations, and stress levels Children today appear to be under so much more pressure than previous generations. Peer pressure these days, not only takes place in the playground, but also through social media, and where once an argument could be ‘left at school’ until the following day it now continues on at home through instagram, snapchat, facebook etc. Parents seem to be constantly ferrying children to sports clubs, music and dance lessons, and a whole host of extra curricular activities. On top of all that, changes the government have made this year to SATs and GCSE have put teachers under enormous pressure to deliver results, and if this is stressful for Heads and teaching staff, what effect is it having on our children?

Grange Now asked local Psychotherapist, Sarah Fairweather, to offer up some handy tips and advice to local youngsters and their parents deal with SATs, mocks, AS exams and coursework. As well as meeting expectations from parents and other adults in their life there are the ever demanding expectations from school. 10 – 20% of

school age children have experienced anxiety symptoms.

The pressures of the SAT exams are hitting children not only in year 6 but now in year 2. Many children as young as 10 are worried that failure in these will set them up for failure in life. A recent report states that children are feeling so nervous about the impact of a low score on their future that they are unable to sleep or eat the week of the tests.

Anxiety in children is, unfortunately, now very commonplace. It impairs their day to day lives, as well as increasing their risk of severe mental health disorders in adulthood. Recent figures show that by the age of 16 years, 10% of children are affected by an anxiety disorder. The good news – there is help out there. One of them is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is used to help teach children how to identify and manage their emotions, replacing the more anxious thoughts with more helpful ways of thinking. It involves teaching them ways to stay calm and develop their problem solving skills to better confront and cope with anxiety provoking situations.

3 SIMPLE WAYS In which you can begin to help your child manage their anxiety: Blowing bubbles I know it sounds silly but young children learn essential breathing skills from blowing bubbles, especially trying to make the biggest bubble ever! For older children you can teach them the 7:11 technique – breathe in while counting to 7 and out while counting to 11. Calming box This helps children become more aware of their own triggers and what is needed to help calm them down. Help your child create a calming box by putting different objects into the box which they can then use at times of distress(this can also be used for anger – Stress balls, snow globes, colouring books, bubbles, books/comics Worry tin This will help your child to discuss their worries rather than bottling them up. Encourage them to write them down and pop them in the tin. You can then discuss them with your child once they are calm. These are just a few tips and there are many more. Winner of BBC’s ‘Garden of the Year’

Neighbourhood Plan

It’s already turning into quite a year for Holker Hall; BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2015/16 have just crowned them, ‘Garden of the Year’ winners.

We have now completed all the research work and the Plan is really taking shape.

The Plan is now with our consultants for those final touches. The people of Grange and Kents Bank will have an opportunity to see and give their views on the Plan at a formal public consultation later in the year. We will let you know the dates and venues nearer the time.

Now in their fifth year, the 11-category awards are a celebration of the countryside and its people with a shortlist of nominees drawn up by experts including BBC presenters John Craven, Ellie Harrison and Chris Packham. Nominations for ‘Garden of the Year’ were shortlisted by the editor of BBC Gardeners’ World, Lucy Hall and winners crowned via a public vote. Holker beat off stiff competition from across the Country with the five-strong nomination list including Glendoick Gardens in Perthshire and Beth Chatto Gardens in Essex.

Fergus Collins, editor of BBC Countryfile Magazine, comments; “With increasing pressures on the countryside and wider natural environment, it’s even

getting closer to the finish line

The Steering Group has also used the knowledge gained from its research and public consultations to submit a detailed response to SLDC about the Development Brief for the large site on land south of Allithwaite Road at Kents Bank (also known as MN25).

more vital to shout about what makes rural Britain so special. Our annual awards help champion our landscapes, our wildlife and our country heroes. This year’s nominees represent the best of rural Britain and are exceptional examples of what the UK’s countryside has to offer”. The full lineup of winners were unveiled online this week and will appear in the May issue of the magazine.

Holker Hall and Gardens are open for the 2016 season from 20th March to 30th October, Wednesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays. The Hall opens 11am to 4pm, Gardens open 10.30am to 5pm and the café, gift shop and food hall open from 10.30am to 5pm.

For the first time visitors will have the opportunity to book a ‘Tour and Tea with the Head Gardener’ event which takes place on 20th April and again 13th July.

Fire Station Open Days Ever fancied having a look round your local fire station, climb inside the fire engine or set off the blue light? Now’s your chance.

By the time you read this, the Cartmel trail races will have taken place [19th March]. Several members of Allithwaite Running Club will have run in the races, although results will need to wait until the next issue of Grange Now. The trail races and challenge are the first of this year’s Lakeland Trails running events; they’re held annually from early Spring to late Autumn. There were two races over distances of 10km and 18km. Besides that, there’s an 18 km trail challenge for those who wanted to attempt a longer course than he/she might have done before. Going for the 10 km race were Graham Jackson, John Douglas, David Binks and Neil Stirling. In the 18 km trail challenge were Ann Nicholson, Dean Pallister and Steve Wilson.

For the ‘blue riband’ event, Tina Jackson was running in the 18km race. Besides all that, the club is still meeting Monday and Thursday every week. It’s now the time of year to head up towards Hampsfell in the early evening and be rewarded with a magnificent sunset viewed from the hospice.

Finally, there a couple of advance notices too: Tina and Dean have signed up to run half marathons in the Montane Trail 13 amongst (and over) the Howgill Fells on the 15th of May. Also Steve Wilson will be doing the April 10km race in Langdale on the 16th of April. We wish them all the best for their races.

Flood hit golf club awarded funding Grange-over-Sands Golf Club has been awarded £5000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Flood Relief Fund to repair parts of the course which were badly damaged as a result of Storm Desmond. In December, Sport England launched the £200,000 Flood Relief Fund in a bid to help clean up and repair sports facilities. Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “We appreciate that sport isn’t a major priority when people’s lives, homes and businesses are at risk. But once communities are starting to get their lives back to normal, being able to use their local sports club as usual can make a real difference. The club will use its award to purchase commercial, firm rubber matting which will improve pathways for golfers and allow the ground-staff machinery access to all parts of the course.

Cartmel Health walk The walks start at 10.45am every Tuesday. Free parking is available just inside the paddock/grandstand entrance to Cartmel Racecourse (LA11 6QF). Please note this is not the main village pay and display car park. The walk start is about 10 minutes gentle walk from the village main bus stop. From the village square, take the road to the right of the Village Shop (home of Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding) proceeding along the side of the racecourse for about 200 metres to the main gate. Free parking is available on the hard standing area on the left just after you have crossed the race track. Please turn up 15 minutes early for your first walk in order to complete the registration form. The main walk will last about 1 hour (though shorter walks can be undertaken according to individual's needs) and will follow one of a number of routes through the racecourse, and surrounding fields and woods. Between 5 and 10 walkers usually attend and

the length and route of the walk takes into account the abilities of those present. Although the walks can be kept to level areas, most of the routes have to cross grass and tracks, which might make them difficult for wheelchairs or push chairs (it is recommended that you make contact with the leader in advance if you wish to bring these). A 30 minute walk is available. Contact Ewen Cameron on 015395 32319 or at e.cameron1@btinternet.com

Tim’s column

We are nearing the end of the first year of the current Government, the Chancellor has delivered his first Budget since the Coalition and it is becoming clearer how the next four years are going to work out. Essentially I am going to be working very hard to maintain the services we need here in South Cumbria. Over the past few months we have seen the threats to the funding for our police, to school meals for reception and early years children in primary schools, to our pharmacies and to our justice system with the announcement of the closure of the court in Kendal. Sadly, I fear that this is only just the start of the list of services that we are going to have to fight very hard to maintain in the face of the face of a drive to dramatically reduce Government spending. Along with the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chair of South Cumbria Magistrates I have written to the Justice Secretary to challenge his plan to close the court in Kendal. We recognise the need to save money within the justice system and so have suggested a way of doing this with the Kendal court whilst maintaining a court service in Kendal. Before the closure was announced the Government conducted a consultation to see what local residents thought of the plan. Almost everyone who responded was against the proposals, that included solicitors and other groups involved in ensuring that the we all have equal access to justice. The fact that the Government has completely ignored all of these objections and decided to simply go ahead with their original plans is, I am afraid, a key sign that they are keen to just drive

County Matters

through their agenda without any concern for our needs in this part of the world. Sadly, we saw another example of this rather high handed attitude in the recent budget speech when the Chancellor announced that all schools would become academies whether they want to or not. A lot of secondary schools around here have already made this move but our local primary schools have been much less enthusiastic as it means that they have to take responsibility for a lot of issues currently managed by Cumbria County Council. When you are a small village primary school, currently just about managing with all the pressures of SATs tests, looking after children beyond the school day to accommodate parents who work, the many training demands, etc. The additional burden of having to pick up even more responsibilities will, I fear, be a burden too far. It is already hard enough to find teachers willing to take the step up to becoming a Head Teacher, this is certainly not going to make it any easier and I worry will lead to many of our smallest schools having to consider merging with other schools. As ever if I can help with these or any other issues then please contact me by ringing 01539 723 403 or emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk Thanks for your support, Tim

On the 10th March, I attended the official opening of the new extension to Grange Primary School, by the Bishop of Penrith. The extension includes the new library and contains the computer tablets for which I secured funding. I must thank the Bishop for opening these new facilities and the local community for all their efforts in raising the funds to make this happen. The pupils were very enthusiastic and excited with the new library. Two of them even gave me a quick lesson on how to operate the new tablets. Hopefully by now the new Saturday bus service is up and running and with your support this service will go from strength to strength.

In the National Budget for 2016 there will be extra funding for highways and flood defence schemes within the Cumbria area. To help small businesses in Cumbria there is a doubling of the small business rate relief scheme from 50 to 100%, and an increase in the thresholds to benefit a greater number of businesses. I am glad to see the Government have taken on board the issue which has been concerning us all regarding the health of our children by proposing a new sugar levy on the soft drinks industry so they reduce the sugar content of their products to tackle childhood obesity. The money raised will be used to double sports funding in primary schools and fund longer school days in secondary schools that offer their pupils a wider range of activities, including extra sport. Kindest regards

Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

“There is no more efficient way to convince someone you are crazy than to tell them you are building a cardboard boat” said local Councillor, Ben Berry, who set up and ran the Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race after being inspired by similar events in the USA. This fourth event will make a massive splash. The race now in its fourth year is sponsored by Progression Solicitors who have offices in Windermere, Ulverston, Grange and very soon Barrow and Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel and Marina has always been in aid of local charities. In 2016 it will be supporting St Mary’s Hospice and the Lake District Calvert Trust. ●● St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston, provides specialised supportive and palliative care for people with life limiting conditions throughout South Cumbria. ●● The Lake District Calvert Trust, Bassenthwaite, enables people with disabilities, together with their families and friends, to achieve their potential through the challenge of outdoor adventure in the countryside. Races take place on a time trial basis with two boats at a time pitted against each other. As if it wasn’t enough for competitors to get that sinking feeling as their beautifully constructed cardboard boats gently submerge beneath the waters if they manage to survive the time trial they then join The racing is followed by the Armada (Destruction Derby)which this year introduces the survivors battling a common enemy in the form of the Sea Monster, a man made water serpent in which

boats still managing to keep afloat succumb to a final onslaught., will be rearing from the depths to demolish any surviving vessels. Last year’s fastest time was achieved by Richie’s Warriors who pillaged their way to victory. Paddlers will compete for a variety of prizes courtesy of Low Wood Watersports Centre, including the fastest boat round the course, the best dressed team, best design, and the Under 16s award. The Armada prize will go to the victorious team in the final battle, and the Titanic prize awarded for the most spectacular sinking. Anthony Smith, Managing Director of Progression Solicitors said “It really is a fantastic event. We love being so closely involved with organising and making sure the event goes well. For us it is not just about sponsoring the event and turning up on the day, we want to raise as much money for our nominated charities as possible and at the same time give something back to some of the communities in which we are based”. This year the team who raises the most money through fundraising will not only receive a much coveted cardboard trophy but also a slap up delicious meal for their team at one of the areas brilliant award winning pubs The Watermill Inn, Ings.

Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel & Marina once again hosts the thrills and spills on the water from 10:00am on Saturday 14 May, and crews from Cumbria, Lancashire and beyond are now being called to enter by visiting www.cardboardboatrace.co.uk

Bookshelf Welcome back to Bookshelf, the monthly update on what is happening at Grange Library & Local Link. We are delighted to return with our regular column in Grange Now. The Easter school holidays now are here, so to prevent boredom on wet or cold days, bring your children/ grandchildren into the Library! We have selections of books for all ages (from board books for little ones to teen fiction), Storysacks (games or toys and books combined for primary school age children) and DVDs available to borrow. “Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?” Although Summer is a little way off, this month we will be celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th Anniversary. Shakespeare wrote something for everyone, from Comedies to Tragedies to History and Poetry and we are highlighting a selection of his writings which may tempt you to return to an old favourite or perhaps try something new. To quote ‘As You Like It’ "Can one

desire too much of a good thing?” This month we have two art displays to enjoy in our Art Room - from Pat Smith & Friends until 9th April then Ann Southward from 11th April. World Health Day on 7th April marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization which was founded in 1948. On this theme, the Library has specialist health collections of books including Macmillan Cancer, Well Read (Mental Health) and Dementia, all located in the far room, available to browse and borrow. If you can no longer manage to get to the Library but still love reading, we have a monthly home delivery service where we can deliver a selection of books (can include large print or talking books) and collect the previous month’s selection. Just call us on 32749 or ask a friend/ family member to pop in and tell us what type of books you like and how many you would like delivered. Many thanks, and welcome back, to Lyn Prescott. We are delighted to see the return of Lyn to the library, and ‘Bookshelf’ to Grange Now.

Energy not landfill Last month, the Editor mentioned in his letter his ‘shock’ when a supermarket sales assistant told him that any food not sold by the sell-by date goes to landfill. This led Margaret TriceWaters to contact us. Margaret, who was visiting her daughter in the area (Cark), lives in Northampton and she told us that all out of date food, and food waste from households, is collected and recycled by South Northamptonshire Council. She very kindly sent us a leaflet which states: “6 recycled tea bags

could produce enough electricity to boil a kettle for another cuppa”. The leaflet also states: “It costs more than £440,000 each year to landfill food waste in South Northamptonshire. Recycling it could generate electricity to power a typical school for more than 142 weeks.” This would seem to make sense all on its own but when you couple this the fact that landfill is actually damaging the environment, does it not make perfect sense to

Celebrating lifelong dedication Is the theme of the month at Higginsons Butchers and Pie Makers this April. We are celebrating a couple of important milestones and achievements for the familiar faces behind our established brand.

Spinach & Cream Cheese Pie Spinach has long been popular all over the world due to its nutritional value and great taste. Popeye used it to revive his fighting spirits and strength and Catherine De Medici insisted it be served at every meal when she became Queen of France in 1522. Although it is available year-round, spinach is just coming into season and is at its best right now. Look out for Growing Well’s baby and big leaf varieties in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop – the baby leaf is perfect in chef’s Spinach and Cream Cheese Pie: Ingredients 250g Shortcrust pastry 3 bags of Growing Well baby Spinach 200g full fat cream cheese 50g grated parmesan 1 finely diced red onion 2 roughly chopped tomatoes 2 eggs, beaten Pinch of nutmeg Salt and pepper

1. Preheat your oven to 180˚C. 2. Grease a quiche dish with soft margarine. Form half of the pastry into a ball and then, on a floured surface, roll it out and line the dish with it. 3. Wash the spinach and drain well. Drop into a hot saucepan with a little butter, salt and pepper, and nutmeg. 4. Cook until wilted then drain well, squeezing out all of the excess water. 5. In a bowl, mix the spinach and the remaining ingredients together and season well. Place the filling inside the pastry base. 6. Roll out the other half of the pastry ready to cover the top of the quiche dish. Brush the sides with egg wash before putting the lid in place. 7. Brush the top with egg wash, then bake for 45 minutes until golden brown. 8. Allow to rest for 15 minutes. Serve with a delicious salad.

Our Senior Butcher, Mark Butler of Allithwaite completes his 30th year of service for Higginsons this Easter, making him one of Higginsons longest-serving employees. Mark joined the business soon after leaving school and began to learn the butchery craft. Twenty nine years on, Mark is at the top of his game and helps to train up the new recruits. According to Mark, his proudest moment was “in 1994, when we won ‘Britains Best Butcher’ at the Top Shop Awards”. Last month at the annual Cumbria Life Food & Drink awards, Higginsons owners and founders, Stuart & Pauline received an accolade of their own, winning the ‘Special Award for Lifetime Achievement’. The couple, who were holidaying in Australia at the time, were notified of the award and had recorded a video message to be played during the presentation. Stuart said they were “proud to have won such an award, especially amongst such a superb line up of nominations”. Rather apt that these special occasions have coincided with National Butchers Week, which was founded a few years back to celebrate butchers’ creativity and passion, and which aims to help raise the profile of the butchery trade, particularly through the promotion of independent butchers shops as beacons of excellence. Sadly during the last decade, the industry has experienced a dearth of young talent because of its perceptions as a declining, old-fashioned industry. Luckily, independent butchers’ shops have undergone a recent revival with consumer popularity growing, however the industry now faces a major skills gap as a result of a lost generation. We therefore think it’s more important than ever to shout about the vast array of knowledge and experience that can be found within local independent butchers! CHURCH NEWS

Singing for the Brain The Singing for the Brain group, which has been running in Grange since October 2014, sang its swan song just before Easter. The group was the initiative of the Grange club of Soroptimist International (S.I), and was set up under the auspices of the Alzheimer’s Society using funds raised by S.I. Grange and using volunteer session leaders and helpers from the Grange club. Initially a pilot run of 10 sessions was planned and the club understood that if they started the group and proved the need for one in Grange, the Alzheimer’s Society would take over the running of it, providing any necessary funding and also people to run it. However, having made a success of the group, local Soroptimists continued to run it using their own funds and helpers for a further 4 terms of sessions. Sadly, just as funds of almost £3000 raised by the club and through generous donations were running out, the Alzheimer’s Society in Kendal realised that their budget for the coming year would not allow them to fund the group and also that they were unable to provide a new singing leader. The weekly sessions of singing and socialising have been extremely beneficial and enjoyable for dementia sufferers and their carers and will be sadly missed. Soroptimist International, Grange, are extremely disappointed that the group cannot continue. Many of their members have been involved as volunteers and seen how valuable the sessions have been. Singing for the Brain groups in Barrow and Kendal are continuing for the time being if people are able to travel to them. Alison Hinds of S.I told Grange Now: “I have spoken to fellow Grange Soroptimists about it and we would like to have some involvement in a new group - this had always been our intention when we thought the Alzheimer's Society were going to take on the running and costs of it. We would need a new singing leader (more than one if possible!) and donations to keep some form of social and music therapy available to local people with dementia. Grange Soroptimists could then work in partnership with others to make this possible and share the work of it.”

St Paul’s, Grange This year, for the first time, St Paul’s held a service of Tenebrae on Maundy Thursday evening immediately following the Eucharist of the Last Supper. The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for darkness and has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services of the last three days of Holy Week. This service is marked by a reading from the book of Lamentations and the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights until a single candle, considered a symbol of the Lord, remains. Towards the end of the

noon and the hour long concert will commence at 1.00pm. Admission is £8 to include lunch and is payable at the door.

All of us at St Paul’s wish to extend a warm welcome to our new Team Vicar, the Rev’d Rachel Stavert who will be Licensed at St John’s, Flookburgh at 7.30pm on Friday 8th April. Rev’d Rachel will have particular responsibility for the parishes of Allithwaite and Flookburgh. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place at 7.30pm in church on Wednesday 20th April. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served after the meeting.

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Parish At the time of writing, as we approach the final days of Lent we have the satisfaction of knowing that our individual Lenten observances of prayer, penance and fasting will soon be drawing to their various conclusions and that the parish effort for the Lenten Lunch contributed in the region of £120 to combine with the sums raised in the other churches for the benefit of starving peoples around the world. In our parish this year we will be welcoming Rachel Ashworth into full communion with the Catholic Church; congratulations and best wishes to her. As can be clearly seen by anyone walking along Kents Bank Road, the landscaping around the edges of the car park and field is progressing steadily thanks to Tom and Sarah, our gardeners. Regarding social matters at St. Charles’ and St. St. Cuthbert’s Parish, the annual Parish Lunch will take place on 24th April – and there

Grange Methodist On Mothering Sunday, some children from Toast Church joined the congregation. For the Dressing of the Cross, a posy of flowers was laid at the foot, and Ruth Webster read the responsive readings. Later in the service, girls from Toast Church presented the ladies of the congregation with posies which the children had made, as an acknowledgement of Mother’s Day. Bryan Bucknell was the preacher, and started with some humorous comments, often made by mothers. On Tuesday 8th March, Ivy Johnson led the Women’s

service this candle is hidden and a loud noise symbolising an earthquake at the time of the resurrection is heard and the hidden candle is restored to its place. This was a very moving service and we hope that Tenebrae will become an addition to our church services during Holy Week in the coming years. The first in St Paul’s season of lunchtime concerts will be held on Wednesday, 6th April. Charles Edmondson has compiled a collection of music written specifically for Spring and will be giving the recital on organ and piano. Included will be a miscellany of organ pieces from America and a Sonata in G by Haydn. Lunch will be served from 12

are already 80 names on the list. Well done to the Social Committee! This year’s lunch looks like being the best ever.

By the time this edition of “Grange Now” arrives in your letter box the Easter weekend will probably have been and gone. Nevertheless, Easter is a time for great rejoicing in the Christian church, so on behalf of everyone at St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Parish may I wish everyone a Happy Easter and remember, whatever you do and wherever you go in this Easter season, may the Good Lord go with you. Because stewards are often asked about lady herself, they have to be conversant with her background and Joan gave us a short resume of Beatrix’ life. Stewards have to be alert and knowledgeable to answer the many questions that visitors pose. They also need to be sensitive as to what the visitors are looking for, and pictures are great points of interest. Elizabeth Armstrong was the pianist. On Sunday 13th March, Dr

He was leading a series of meetings at Thornleigh, and there were quite a number of folks who were staying at Thornleigh, in the congregation. His choice of hymns was interesting, but more so, the choice of tunes, which were predominantly Welsh. Jean Long, who was a representative of the Wesley Guild led the prayers and Brian Ludlow was the organist. ART & MUSIC

Featured Artist: Flookburgh Band On 4th May, Flookburgh Band will celebrate 107 years of making music. Their website offers some fascinating insights into the band along with some great photographs. It holds a wealth of information, too much for us to repeat here but it would be wrong not to mention Jack Manning, who, at the AGM on 8th February, was made a life-member and later, a vice-president. Jack told Grange Now: “I retired from playing last Christmas [December 2015]after playing with them for 70 years. The band has been a big part of my life and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I would recommend joining the band to anybody. They are all very friendly, there is never any tension or fall outs. Flookburgh has always been a great band and I hope it continues.” On 9th November 1996, at a concert in Flookburgh Church, Jack was honoured for fifty years of service to the band and presented with a cut-glass decanter and two whisky glasses, all suitably engraved. The band is now led by former co-principal trombonist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, John Iveson, who was also Principal in the Royal Philharmonic. On 12th and 13th September 1998, the band went to Cartmel school to make a recording which came

He was familiar with the procedures and was able to produce the recording to a high standard, travelling to the studio in Manchester several times to complete the work. The end product certainly justified all the hard work by all involved. The band, being self-supporting, has always had some restraints on what it could do or buy, but the support from local people has been tremendous throughout the years and Flookburgh Band has probably fared better than most un-sponsored bands. Joe and Connie - one year on

Green door art trail - 9th & 10th April

After the success of last years event there is going to be a second, ‘Joe and Connie Calling’, This time the event is to raise money for our new charity, ‘Butterfly Hugs’, the proceeds will go into a fund to financially support young families affected by life limiting and terminal illness in South Lakeland. 10% of the funds raised is going to be donated to each of the following charities; Reversing Retts, Jigsaw Children’s Hospice and the Cumbria Flood Fund. This year’s festival will feature fantastic music including: David Kay, Ulpha 590 and Under Dogs (bands start at 3.30pm). There will also be entertainment from with some amazing moves from Elite School of Dance and the very talented Grange Operatic Society. There will, of course, be a cake stall, a bar (courtesy of David Matthews), hog roast, burgers, chips and much more. For the kids (big and small) there’s bubble football, bouncy castles, and an appearance from Spiderman and Cinderella.

The Green Door Art Trail takes place during this weekend throughout the South Lakes area. Details of all the artists taking part can be found on the website www.greendoor. org.uk where there is also an interactive map of all the venues. Print versions of the catalogue can be found at Grange Tourist Information and the Beach Hut

Note the date in your diary: Saturday 14th May 2016. The fun starts at 12.30pm at Allithwaite Community Centre and Playing Fields. Adults £2.50 and children under 16 get in free. In the past year Joe has responded very well to his treatment and can now ride his bike without stablizers. Connie’s health continues to deteriorate but at a much slower rate, she inspires all by continuing to smile throughout. Money raised last year has paid for a special bed, psychotherapy and counselling for Joe.

The Sun came out for Annie Guest reviewer: Lionel Warner

From the orchestral prelude - a rousing march, to the closing chorus, this was a show to celebrate the enthusiastic talent of a wonderful crowd of children from Grange and district, and their adult counterparts, who have, over the years, given us much pleasure. Annie (Molly Cowley) led the twelve orphans with loving authority and was ever present throughout the evening, singing much of the time with clear delivery. They say, don’t they, “never perform with children or animals”. The risk was taken by the adults with much success. Miss Hannigan (Sam Grundy) was in drunken charge of the orphanage and fulfilled the role with an amusing panache. The billionaire Warbucks (Steve Lowe) was believable as the prospective saviour of Annie from poverty and legally adopting her; and also balking the claims of false parents (Simon McCleery and Hannah Fish) seeking the bounty of 50,000 dollars. Grace (Trudi Carter) Warbuck’s efficient secretary, kept a tight grip on everything happening around her. Simon and Hannah displayed their range of acting skills with aplomb, adding a light, humorous touch against the dramatic background of the story. We were indeed honoured by the presence of Franklin D Roosevelt (Mick Malkin) who added gravitas to proceedings. Lt. Ward (Mark Tunnadine), New York police, delivered the part convincingly with an understated authority. The chorus sang their hearts out, one moment dressed as down and outs, the next strutting their stuff in elegant finery. Every single person involved in this great production must be roundly applauded Oh, I nearly forgot to include Sandy (Rosie) the dog, who, in my book, won a canine Oscar. Thank you to Lionel Warner for this review If you would like to review a production please send it in to info@grangenow.co.uk and we’ll pick the best one to feature. Reviews should be about local events and can include concerts, plays, musicals, books etc.

gallery as well as many other places in the area. There is one venue close at hand for Grange Now readers; Applegarth, Sunny Bank, Cark-in-Cartmel LA11 7PF where Keith and Elizabeth Shorrock will be opening their workshop and studio to visitors. In the house Amanda Hunter will be showing her jewellery and Jane Mallinson will have a wide variety of felted work on display.

Malcolm Higginson receives long service award It was taken following the Friday night performance of Annie. Malcolm Higginson (centre) has received his NODA long service award for 60 years as a member of Grange Operatic Society. He is really not very well at the moment but was determined to come down to Victoria Hall to receive his medal in person. The only other person who has got that close to 60years was Margaret Wilson, but she unfortunately died a few weeks before her 60th anniversary a few years ago.

(from left to right) Mick Malkin – 30years long service Kath Carradus – the NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) NW area Rep who made the presentation Malcolm Higginson – 60 years long service Sally Haines – 30 years long service Colin Burrow – Grange Amateur Operatic Society President.

Springtime 50s & 60s Disco Come and join in the fun at a charity disco in the Victoria Hall on 9th April, celebrating music from the 1950s and 1960s. Proceeds go towards building a Health Centre in Nepal to replace one lost in the earthquake. Tickets are £15 each to include pie and peas supper (or veg option). Licensed bar and tea/ coffee available. Dance the night away on Saturday 9th April 7.30 - 11.30. Tickets from TIC or call 015395 32265.

Young photographer winners The exceptional, imaginative, technical and creative skills of local young photographers from Cartmel Priory were recently recognised by their local Rotary Club in the Rotary Young Photographer Competition. Headteacher, Dr Paul Williams, and teacher, Miss Gemma Brown, themselves keen photographers, had the challenging task of judging the entries along with John Biddlestone, member of Grange Rotary. The brief for each participant was to present three photographs and accompanying text addressing the theme ‘Our World is Beautiful’.

Judges looked for technical merit, content and composition, imagination and style. The photographs covered a whole range of subjects from Lakeland scenes, innovative holiday snaps from abroad, people in their environment to wildlife and birdlife. ITunes Vouchers to the value of £110, courtesy of

info@grangenow.co.uk

The Rotary Club, were awarded to the best six students. Key Stage Three Winner, Emma W, and Key Stage Four Winner, Isaac H, will now be entered in the Regional Round covering Cumbria and North Lancashire. A delighted, Dr Williams, said: “Well done to all pupils that took part in the competition."

SCHOOL REPORTS

Lindale Primary and Pre-School Nursery In school we have had a very busy term with lots of visits and extracurricular activities. Years 4,5 and 6 all took part in Young voices at Manchester Arena which was a fabulous experience, being part of a choir of over 7000 children. As part of their class topic on ‘India’ this term, they also performed a Bollywood style dance in the Dance Platform at Ulverston Victoria High School. All year groups in school have been enjoying getting outside now that the weather is better and we are beginning to prepare our class beds in the school garden. Reception and Year 1 are especially enjoying being able to do more outdoor learning. It has also been a busy time for sporting events with football, hockey and key steps gymnastics events along with other schools from the Cartmel Peninsula. We also took part in the

Allithwaite Primary It has been a very busy half term at Allithwaite school. The children have successfully participated in several sporting events. The children from years 1 to 4 went to Cartmel Priory school on Thursday 3rd March to take part in the gymnastics competition. Year 3 and 4 proudly brought gold medals back to school and are now busy working on their routines for the next stage of the competition, County Key Steps, which will take place in Penrith.

They returned to school, again with gold! Then on Thursday 10th March, our Year 4 and 5 children took part in the Dance Platform at Ulverston Victoria High School. They ‘walked like an Egyptian’ following lots of practice with dance teacher Lucy Everett and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. At school we have been busy celebrating World book Day. During the week beginning 29th February – 4th March we enjoyed lots

this half term was to Tom and Abi’s garden centre, Halecat at Witherslack where Tom showed us the different plants and shoots. We’ve planted primulas in pop bottles to hang on the fence, a very colourful garden.

Football - Grange Now previously featured Kelsey P, who debuted for the England ladies/ U17 football teams at the end of 2015 in Germany and France. Kelsey has since been selected to play for England in California in the NTC Invitational Tournament and for the Euro qualifiers in Serbia. The trip to California was an amazing experience for Kelsey, one which she thoroughly enjoyed and gained much valuable experience from. She also met Steven Gerrard of LA Galaxy. Kelsey continues to play regularly for the Blackburn Rovers firsts, with a tough training schedule to match.

Next half term Lucy Warren joins us as Nursery Assistant and Fliss Ward is our new Deputy Manager, congratulations to you both. of book themed activities including; designing bookmarks, dressing up as characters from the Channel 4’s ‘Children’s favourite 100 books’ and after school on Friday the parents helped their children on a book treasure hunt! Grange Primary School

We have had a very busy time since returning to school after half term. Mrs Summers and Mrs Johnson did not return to school with the rest of the school as they were taking part in a British Council Visit to our Partner School in Nepal. They had an amazing time learning all about the country and school. Thank you to all those who have worked on the building and created an amazing library that is already being used with great enthusiasm. After a successful cluster gymnastics competition all our teams represented our cluster at the large schools partnership festival. All children performed really well with our youngest team, Key Steps 1, winning! They will now represent the South Lakes in

Penrith later this month. Young Voices was a great success again this year. The children have been practising the songs since long before Christmas ready for the one big performance in Manchester. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and sang their hearts out. The same day as young voices also saw the beginning of Fairtrade fortnight. To promote Fairtrade foods from around the world, the school ran a Fairtrade breakfast club where a different country's food was sampled each morning. A delightful selection of food was on offer each morning and a great turn out was seen. World Book day also coincided with the school's outdoor morning.

The whole school took part in lots of different activities all based around reading, stories and books. Activities ranged from listening to a good book in front of the camp fire to planning an adventure for stick man. Our cluster football competition for KS2 and the Windermere Cross Country were on the same day. The children played really well at the football festival with both our boys teams coming second and our girls team winning their group.

Cartmel Priory pupils are "geniuses"

We also performed really well at the cross country with our highest placed runner coming 13th. FROGs held a successful Bingo night where parents and child alike enjoyed the prospect of winning the big Easter egg! Finally this half term we have taken part in British Science Week. An incident occurred in school where someone stole some biscuits from the hall and the children needed to find the culprit. They learnt how to make observations of a crime scene, take finger prints and separate ink to analyse pens. We also welcomed GSK to our school to work with children on further science experiments.

On Wednesday 23 March, four pupils from Cartmel Priory School travelled to Chetwynde School, to taken on Furness Academy, in the semi-finals of the school quiz which is organised by BAE Systems.

A great day was had by all children learning more about Science and applying our skills. As you can see a really busy time this term but we have enjoyed every minute!

The quiz is in its 10th year and the pupils are quizzed on their knowledge of science, technology, maths and engineering. The students from Cartmel: Izzy W, Lydia D, Tom McS and Joe R beat Kirbie Kendal by 65 points (460-390) in the quarter-finals to progress to the semi’s. Sadly, they didn’t win, but it was a close call. The project leader for, Top of The Form, Jason Watson, who is an engineering graduate at BAE Systems, was reported as saying: “The night has gone well and the atmosphere has been great. All the kids involved in the competition are exceptional - they're all geniuses."

Cartmel Primary School Cartmel CE Primary is proud to be part of the Cartmel Peninsula Cluster group of schools. The Cluster organises many sporting events, hosted in the main by Cartmel Priory School. Recently, we have had a number of sporting successes. All our gymnasts performed exceptionally well at the Cluster Gymnastics. Our Year 5 and 6 girls gained first place and will now go on to represent the South Lakes in the Cumbria County Finals in Penrith just prior to the Easter holidays. Our Year 6 boys won the football trophy for the second year running! This term, although short, has been very busy with trips out to support the children’s learning in class. Class 1 have participated in ‘Wednesday Walks’ into Cartmel Village, to trigger thinking about their local environment. They have looked at local businesses and shops, talking to willing shopkeepers about life in Cartmel. They have also visited the Racecourse car park, surveying cars there and also traffic on the streets. Class 2 visited Tullie House in Carlisle to attend a workshop about the Egyptians and also to Heron Corn Mill. Class 3 have been to the Dock Museum in Barrow, to enhance their understanding of Barrow in Cumbria. They are comparing this

with their developing knowledge of Barrow in Alaska, as part of their Local Area study. Class 4 have demonstrated their ongoing expertise in flute, which they learn as a class through the Cumbria Music Services First Access programme. They performed a number of songs and instrumental pieces for the whole school, staff and parents recently. We have also kick started our ‘Worship Cloths’ project this term with The Priory Church. The whole school visited church to meet with Reverend Nick. The aim is to design and make new worship cloths for our worship table at school in line with the liturgical colours. In our visit to church, the children were able to see the beautiful vestments and altar cloths and begin to understand the reasons behind the use of colour to reflect time in the church calendar. We will work on one cloth at a time, with design homework the next step, before the School Council meets to choose the final design. Both children and parents will then work together with school to make the cloths. A true community project which we are very much looking forward to developing!

Grange now | APRIL 2016 - Next deadline 13th MAY

NATURE & WILDLIFE

The Swift There is nothing better to me than sitting in the garden jn the evening with Swifts whizzing and screeching overhead, confirming summer has finally arrived. The Swift is not related to Swallows or Martins, but in fact it is related to the Humming bird. A highly adapted bird, which would have nested in crags, caves and tree hollows, however they have evolved to live among us in our roof spaces, ledges and holes in our walls. A colonial bird that mate for life, but migrate separately, so male and female not meeting for almost nine months a year. One of the fastest flying birds too, feeding on many insects on the wing. In fact they do everything on the wing, including, drink, mate and even sleep, by soaring up to 10,000 feet and slowly descending. When the young leave the nest it may be up to 4 years before they land again, only to breed. They arrive around the end of April, to the beginning of May to their traditional nest sites which are highly sought after and in short supply. This is thought to be due to newer buildings not having suitable nest sites in the eaves and under soffits. Younger Swifts can be seen prospecting for suitable nest sites and may fight for many hours over them.

5 STAR BUG HOTEL

Meathop Moss re-opens

They store their food in their crop and feed irregularly, especially if the weather is bad, in which case they will travel great distances for food. The chick will sometimes go into a torpid state to save energy until the adult’s arrival. At the Cumbria Grand Hotel we have ten nest sites with a potential new one this year. The Swift is in decline, but you can help. Some of the new builds in Grange do have Swift boxes, which are readily available or you can help by recording nest sites in Grange.

On the reserve; Slowworms can be seen basking in the sun, emerging Bluebells, Ramsons, lesser Celandine, Lady’s smock and Arum lily, early butterflies such as Orange tip and the first Chiffchaff arrived on 17th including a fly over from a Snow goose.

On Sunday 10th April, the Bloom Group will be working with the children from Grange Outdoor Nature Club to build a 4star high class bug hotel at the station.

Local wildlife enthusiasts will be able to enjoy one of Cumbria’s oldest nature reserves once more thanks to a grant of £35,964.00 from SITA Trust. 1000 metres of boardwalk, three information signs, a waymarker post and two benches will be installed to make Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Meathop Moss Nature Reserve, near Witherslack, Kendal, easily accessible and enjoyable for everyone once again. A cycle rack has also been donated by South Lakeland District Council and will be installed by volunteers. Cumbria Wildlife Trust has been able to secure this grant thanks to additional donations of £4,135 from members of Cumbria Wildlife Trust. The Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserve underwent restoration work in 2012 to improve the peat bog habitat,

including raising water levels which caused the current boardwalk to become unsafe. Meathop Moss, which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, was the charity’s first nature reserve and was identified as a valuable wildlife habitat by Lord Rothschild in 1915 and was designated as a nature reserve in 1919. Hazel Jones, Senior Fundraising Officer for Cumbria Wildlife Trust says: “Thanks to this generous grant from SITA Trust, 2,000 reed and 1,000 willow plants will be planted by volunteers alongside the new boardwalk to create a natural screen that will reduce visitor disturbance to wildfowl in the fen and pools.Regular volunteering events will be held to assist with this project and the Reserve Warden will lead guided walks at the site to inspire people about nature and the special wildlife at Meathop Moss.”

Tony Saunders from Brown Robin reserve and Ginny Harris of GONC will be in charge of operations, and it is hoped that it will be a safe haven for all kinds of insects.

How you can help the Red squirrels On March 4th, Grange and District Natural History Society had an excellent presentation from Geoff Hetherington and Dave Marshall of Westmorland Red Squirrels who raised our hopes for the return of red squirrels to Grange, and showed us how we can help make this happen. We learned the greys have several advantages over the reds (as is often the case with introduced species). They breed more frequently, and raise more kittens per litter. Their diets are more varied, and they are not as solitary as the reds. Unfortunately, the competition for food and space has left the reds rather vulnerable to starvation and stress. In addition, the parapox virus, spread by the greys, has proved devastating to the reds. Locally, occasional sightings in Eggerslack Wood and at Holker, along with a healthy and stable population in the Witherslack area, give us every confidence that red squirrels can thrive

SOCIETY ROUND-UP

Royal National Lifeboat Institution

The Grange over Sands branch of the Lifeboats held their AGM at Grange Hotel in March, 2016. At the meeting, the Treasurer confirmed that £4,950.72 had been raised for the RNLI during the year January to December, 2015. The Chairman thanked the Committee and members for all their help, and the generous people of Grange, and the surrounding area, for their support for the RNLI. As Bill Byford has retired due to ill health, the position of Box Secretary is temporarily unfilled. So the Officers of Grange Lifeboat Branch were then elected as follows: Chairman - Christine Blakemore; Vice Chairman/Hon. Secretary - Ann Epps; Hon. Treasurer - Vincent Carter; Souvenir Secretary - Lynne Dersley.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

Our March meeting began by remembering a former member Barbara Tankard who had died recently. Jerusalem was sung and the main business items were dealt with.

Members were reminded of the Spring Fayre which will be held on Saturday April 23 and all were asked to support this event.

Details of forthcoming events were given beginning with a film club,a bag making workshop and a summer outing to Hawes and Wensleydale creamery. The speaker,Mr M Hornung entertained everyone with his interesting account of the three months he spent in Labrador and Newfoundland as a student, which was enjoyed by all. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 4 th when Dr Isobel Stirk will talk about " life in a moorland village made famous by the Brontes" and the competition will be a foliage arrangement.

Visitors are always welcome and details may be obtained from our secretary on 33082.

Grange over sands NSPCC

Grange over Sands NSPCC Committee wishes to thank all those who came to the COLOURS FUN(D) RAISING Fashion Show on Wednesday 9th March in Cartmel Village Hall. Everyone really enjoyed this social evening and, whilst purchasing a fashion bargain, generously supported the work of the NSPCC by raising the wonderful amount of £1,073.50p. Thank you to everyone concerned.

Flookburgh Village Hall

Thanks to all who participated in our ‘Valentine's day’ themed lunch. Forty diners enjoyed Carrot and lentil soup and a roll, followed by either apple or rhubarb crumble and custard. Our raffle, all prizes kindly donated raised £68.00, and altogether a total of £201 was raised for the hall. Thanks also, to the Mothers Union and the Sew and Knitters for their donations to our ‘New Kitchen’ fund. By the time you read this, our new tables should have been delivered, the old wooden ones were past their sellby date and the committee decided to replace them. We now find that due to the inclement weather the roof is leaking by the chimneys. We are trying to get estimates from builders to remove said chimneys. Please note our AGM will be held on Tuesday 10th May at 7.30pm. All welcome. Contact Barry for bookings: 59075 or 07989 596 141.

St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group

The group meet every Friday 2- 4pm in the Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, in Grange. Do you or a family member/friend suffer from cancer or a life-shortening illness? Are you caring for someone or are you recently bereaved? St Mary’s Hospice Friendship and Support Group is here for you. Please drop in for a friendly chat, to make new friends, and/or just to enjoy time together. All are welcome. For more information contact Marie on 33279.

Grange Forum

The March meetings have included some interesting talks, the first one being, ‘Only Half a Story’ by Brian Wilson. It was about British Postal History, and may have been better named: ‘one thousand stories’, for we were swept along by so many intriguing tales. The ‘History of Tea’, was palatably served by Sally Farrington whose passion for the subject has led her into marketing the numerous blends now available.

On the 19th May our yearly lunch visit to kendal College takes place. There are limited number available - ring Phil Walker for details on 015395 33256.

Please be informed of our summer outing to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, on Thursday 23rd June. Two hours will be spent there, where you may be tempted to buy a snack at Betty’s Tea Shop. We then progress to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, near York. A NAAFI Canteen is on site where lunch can be taken. Ring Alan Anderson for bookings on 015395 33696.

Witherslack WI

Nineteen members were present. Books of the Federation Raffle tickets were distributed for sale. Stewards for Holker Garden Festival were requested. The fundraising event on May 6th was discussed, also ideas for the summer outing in August and a tea outing in June.

The speaker, Diane Hewitt, had problems with her laptop which “died” at the wrong moment, but recovered later. She talked about the National Gardens Scheme, how it was first started, (all because of District Nurses in Liverpool !) and how much money the six Cumbria branches make for various charities. She explained how people are encouraged to open their gardens and how much support and advice they then get. Her pictures were mainly of her own garden at Bowness. Next meeting.April 12th. Andy Lowe on “Roadside Heritage” Not to be missed. Visitors welcome. Tel: 52302

Grange now | APRIL 2016 - Next deadline 13th MAY

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

At our March meeting Ian Boyle told us about his involvement with the R2R project recording the archaeology of the Duddon Valley. The Duddon Valley Local History Group and the Lake District National Park Authority Archaeology Unit worked together on the Reservoirs to Ring Cairns (R2R) Project, a four year project recording human impact on the landscape. An area of 75 square kilometres was surveyed by 4 teams, each comprising 6 to 8 people, who went out 50 weeks each year for 4 years. They recorded many previously unrecorded, interesting features relating to agriculture, industry and human habitation. They identified several longhouse sites probably dating to the Viking era. Excavation of a ring cairn produced evidence showing humans have occupied the valley since about 2500BC. They added 1679 sites to the valley’s previously known 343 sites recorded on Cumbria’s Historic Environment Record. The lecture was enhanced by stunning pictures of the valley and the features. Our next lecture at Cartmel Village Hall is on Thursday 7 April at 7.30pm when Les Gilpin will talk about the Development of the Furness Railway. Non-members welcome to attend. Please note the lecture on Thursday 3 May will be in Cartmel Priory and not Cartmel Village Hall as previously advertised.

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild

The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild met on Tuesday the 8th of March when guest speaker Sadie Mayer led a workshop on stumpwork. The members, under guidance, started to make a butterfly which would be attached as a raised piece of embroidery on a suitable background. There is a lot of patient stitching required but hopefully there will soon be a colourful group of butterflies on display. The next meeting is on Tuesday 12th of April when Sue Bennett will be taking the annual workshop, which this year is entitled Messing with Metal. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month and new members are welcome. If interested please telephone the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229861800.

Coffee Club

In February, Geoff Gill came to tell us about the work of MAF, a Christian aviation charity that flies missionaries and non-governmental agents to areas which food, aid workers, teachers and doctors can often not reach..such as the refugee camps in South Sudan. Geoff showed by DVDs how more than 130 light aircraft operating in around 25 developing countries have been performing medical evacuations as well as bringing aid to areas others cannot or will not reach. A three day trek through dense jungle suddenly becomes an eleven minute flight and as a result of similar flights thousands of lives have been saved. We greatly admired the bravery of these faithful men and women working often in very isolated situations. On April 19th, we expect a visit from Dougie Gallaher, who has been described as ‘Four Foot and Mouth’. He left school early considered by some to be an ‘uneducable dyslexic, epileptic dwarf ‘ but he went on to get an honours degree in English literature and become one of the most entertaining speakers we have heard. His talk is entitled ‘ A Life not happy, but full of Joy.’The meeting at 10.30am will be preceded by coffee, to which all are welcome.

Grange WI

Richard Evans spoke to us about the work of the RSPB at our last meeting. He used some excellent slides and video clips to show how the RSPB along with other wildlife agencies had ensured the survival of many threatened species and habitats – many of which are crucial for birdlife. We welcomed three new members and discussed the programme for the year ahead – particularly outings to Williamson Park in July and the Lancaster Canal in September. We will be trying out the meeting room at St Charles Church on Kents Bank Road for our April meeting and then making a decision on our new venue. New members are still welcome. Contact Margaret on 36735.

Grange Lecture Society

Amanda Owen achieved fame when her life as a shepherdess on a remote hill farm in Swaledale was featured on ITV’s The Dales. In an attractively illustrated talk on 16th February she spoke entertainingly about how she fulfilled her dream of being a shepherdess, how she met her farmer husband and faced the challenges of tending up to a thousand sheep, rearing a young family of eight and preparing cream teas for passing walkers on the coast-to-coast path. The season ended on 8th March with a lecture by John Pilkington entitled ‘A Balkan Adventure’ recounting five months he spent walking in the scenic Balkan mountains. His journey took in eleven countries on a meandering route from Trieste to Istanbul and his account of places and peoples encountered was enhanced, as always, by his beautiful photographs and inspirational delivery. He spoke with particular feeling about Sarajevo, Srebrenica and Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina, each a casualty of brutal inter-ethnic conflict during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and reported on progress made in replacing shattered buildings and rebuilding bridges (both literally and metaphorically). At the AGM held before John’s lecture Mr Mike Hornung was elected President for 2016-17. The new season of lectures begins on 11th October.

Newton & Field Broughton WI

There wasn’t a spare seat in Lindale Village Hall for the March meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI. There was quite a lot of business to be dealt with. Following that, Joan Bentley, one of the members gave a most enjoyable demonstration of flower arrangements. She used a variety of flowers and foliage and several containers of different shapes and sizes to produce a wonderful assortment of arrangements. Throughout the demonstration she gave many useful tips on the ways to condition plant materials. She also amused members with a variety of stories and jokes. When she had completed her demonstration several members were lucky enough to win one in the raffle. The meeting in April will be on Wednesday 13th when Emma Wright will be taking on, ‘Cooking in Tudor times’. It will be held in Lindale Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.

Arnside & Arnside Knott WI

The March meeting of Arnside & Arnside Knott WI was well attended. Members had to be in good voice, entertaining themselves singing songs from School days. The Federation News was read and bookings for events were taken. Future plans include a visit to Lancaster Castle and playing Bowls. Ivan Day's talk History of Food & Afternoon Tea at The Villa was enjoyed by a number of members. Four members spent a good afternoon admiring the display of

Lower Holker W.I.

At our March meeting, plans were discussed to hold a Celebration Afternoon on Thursday 30th June for HM the Queen's 90th birthday. 2016 is also the 90th Year of this Local WI, so there will be much to celebrate! More details next month.

Grange & District Art Society

The return visit of Peter Threlfall on 3rd March, made a stimulating beginning of the month. Demonstrating landscape painting in acrylics, he worked at speed, producing two pictured during the afternoon. One featured Langdale Pikes, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark with a shimmering Stickle Tarn in the foreground; the other, in sharp contrast, was a view of the Bay sands looking across at Grange from Arnside. On 17th March, we look forward to the selection of members’ paintings for inclusion in the society calendar for 2017. Selection will be made by members, with the aim of including as much variety of subject and technique as possible, to produce a rounded display in the calendar. Our final meeting in hall on 24th March, takes the form of an appraisal of members’ paintings by Andy Mortimer. Each member is invited to put forward one painting to receive helpful advice and suggestions as to how it could be improved. This will be the last of our indoor painting sessions in Allithwaite Hall until September. Friday evening meetings continue throughout the summer (first Friday in the month) at St Charles Borromeo church. There are several social events coming up soon with the final Quiz night of the winter season on Wednesday, 6th April, there is also a Jazz Night on Saturday, 30th April.

Cartmel Art Society

This month, members enjoyed a very absorbing mixed media workshop with local artist Frances Winder. We created sample pieces and triptychs using experimental techniques with oil pastels, cling film and salt over gesso, gouache and watercolour. In the afternoon members worked on their individual inspired compositions. Finally we were shown how to build up a collage and to crop finished pictures. Later in the month our members got together for the Spring Party and delicious Jacob’s Join buffet. The subject of the Roy Johnson competition was “ Spring Fever” and the winner was Liz Croy for her endearing portrait of a rabbit. Runner up was Pamela Gregory with her watercolour of gambolling lambs and third prize went to Trish Johnson for her Spring garden.

Doreen Hannigan was the winner of the Favourite Card competition. Many thanks go to Carol Whiteley for being our entertaining auctioneer of art materials and books, proceeds of which go to Village Hall funds.

GRANGE GARDEN SOCIETY

On 18th March, the Grange Garden Society was treated to a talk by David Metcalfe, entitled ‘Vegetable My Way’. David grows his produce in the challenging climate of the Pendle area of Lancashire. As the aim of most of his growing is to produce examples suitable for the show table, he goes to considerable lengths to get the best from his plants. Many things are started under cover and a lot grown on in containers of various sizes. The plants, both inside and out, are heavily mulched with straw, which retains moisture and protects against leather jackets and cabbage root fly. Tomato plants raised from expensive seed are further propagated from cuttings to produce up to nine plants from one seed. Runner beans are grown from tubers, which provide material for cuttings. The secrets for the growing of potatoes, onions, leeks, brassicas and beetroot were disclosed, challenging us all to produce better veg this season. On 15th April at 7.30pm, Peter Foley will talk on Shrubs and on 20th May, Steven Halliwell will describe Gresgarth Hall and Gardens Through the Seasons. For the summer season all meeting are held in the United Reform Church Hall, commencing at 7.30pm. Visitors always welcome and refreshments provided.

Grange Rotary

During Past President Colin Wilkinson's year of office, a generous donation was given to the charity Growing Well, based at Low Sizergh

Farm. A speaker came and spoke to the club and members were impressed by the work being carried out with people recovering from a mental health problem. The club hopes to hold a mental health awareness day at some point in the future. The club welcomed two new Rotarians, Ray and Judith Booth and have other interested parties in the wings. Finally, eight members attended the District Conference in Southport and came back inspired by the speakers who included John McCarthy.

Grange Ramblers

On 25th February, 11 Ramblers walk the easy 6 mile in the sunshine through Levens Park and along the old canal up to (damaged) Hawes bridge and back along the river Kent returning through the park again. It was amazing to see the degree of scouring in the river bed due to the recent floods. The footbridge at Wilson Place couldn’t be crossed due to the damage. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed being out walking again after the awful winter weather. Leader-Tony Harrison. On 3rd March, 6 Ramblers met at Wray castle for a 6 mile, easy, walk by Windermere lake shore , round Belham Tarn and in the direction of Hawkshead. The weather was fine and there were wonderful views of snow covered mountains. Leader-Jennifer Gallagher. 16th March 8 members started from Water Yeat on a fine sunny morning, after a steady climb to high Bethecar a break in the sun with beautiful views, carried on to Low Bethecar, over the moor, lunch was taken in Grizedale Forest, eventually arrived at top of O’Selside with view over Coniston water and the fells, then we steady return late afternoon in the sun, the 8.8 miles 2000ft ascent walk lead by Ian Conway.

Members, partners and friends enjoyed a very interesting visit to Hawkshead Brewery followed by a delicious meal. At the club meeting £940 raised during the year was allocated with bequests to Sense (the Deaf blind charity), Womankind Worldwide and OCCED Children’s home in Nepal. The club is most grateful for the support of our events by local residents and businesses. On March 19th members swam at Kendal Leisure Centre in the annual Swimathon event. Team sponsorship was for ShelterBox but the final total is not yet available. Club members continue to work on behalf of women and girls including awareness raising and petitions on FGM, honour killings and women’s refuges. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on events or our work see our website www.sigbi.org/ grange-over-sands/

Grange and District U3A

Our Enrolment Morning at the Victoria Hall on 15 March appears to have been a success, providing an opportunity to renew membership in a

convivial atmosphere and for the U3A to showcase its many activities. Membership now exceeds 400, the growth reflecting a demand from the ‘older generation’ for stimulating company and learning opportunities. With the arrival of spring and better weather groups have started their more adventurous activities – the walking groups, birdwatching, geology, cycling, gardening and outdoor bowls enter a busy period, local explorers plan to visit High Head Castle in April and the out & about group will be going to St Helens Glass Museum in April and has a 5 day holiday in East Anglia planned for September. The table tennis group followed up its handsome victory over South Lakes U3A in February with a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Lancaster & Morecambe – it’s fortunate that we only play for fun. A full picture of the U3A’s activities can be found on the Grange & District U3A website at www.u3asites.org.uk/grange but all are welcome to join us at the Methodist Church Hall, Grange for a ‘dropin ‘ event on Tuesday 26 April at 10.30.

LETTERS Dear Editor People in Grange know that the time is rapidly approaching when important decisions will be taken in relation to both Victoria Hall and the Lido, two jewels in Grange’s crown. I write now to set out the options as many of your readers can see them and to emphasise the vital need for the people of Grange to come together and hammer out solutions.

In three years time the Victoria Hall will lose £28,000 of income from SLDC. There are three possible ways in which that can be made up. First, Grange Town Council could increase its precept (council tax demand) by £14 annually for each Band D household; that would meet the need. Second, efforts could be made to increase the income at the Hall. Third, savings could possibly also be made. Common sense suggests that we might need a mixture of all three. Councillor Trish Thomas has organised a public meeting to discuss this at 7 pm on Tuesday 5th April. I hope that many people from the town will come. As to the Lido, I have been very

Dear Editor, To everybody in Lower Holker Parish We are very lucky to have a lovely Victorian hall for our community use, leased to us by Holker Estates. The hall provides a low cost home for many indoor activities including adult education, dancing, crafts and sports and is also the home of Lower Holker Bowling Club and offers lovely views across the Bay. It is a major community asset. The Hall is run by a committee which is responsible for its maintenance, upkeep and improvement. This involves just ten meetings a year and help with fund raising activities. Most of the committee members have been doing a wonderful job for many years but are now getting increasingly creaky. We need some new blood with enthusiasm, energy and good ideas.

impressed recently by the number of ideas which people in Grange have in their minds and future development will partly depend on people sharing those ideas and giving their time and expertise. But before any plan can be adopted we need to know that the Lido can be made safe and, given the impossibility of restoring a swimming pool, that a more or less flat surface can be made. Many of your readers will have peeped through the wooden screens and seen how big the old pool is. They will recognise that the task of filling in that pool or even building a deck over the pool area is very daunting, especially given the problems of bringing machinery and materials to such an inaccessible location. The SLDC study, about which David Sykes wrote in the last issue, will give vital advice on this. There are real problems, especially at the Lido. But, if it proves feasible to do the huge initial works, I think that we who live in the town just might help recreate a facility which would be viable and sustainable, and of which we could be proud. Eric Morrell, SLDC Councillor (Grange North). Won’t you join us to help save the future of the Hall? IF THERE IS NO COMMITTEE TO RUN THE HALL, AND THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN SOONER RATHER THAN LATER, THEN THE HALL WILL BE IN DANGER OF HAVING TO CLOSE. The future of the hall depends not only on its Committee but also how much use of it is made by the local community. The revenue received from hiring the hall out is essential to maintain and improve the hall as well as pay the running costs. I appeal to members of the community and local community groups to make use of the hall to ensure the reason for its being and future survival. Apart from the main hall, there is a smaller hall and a supper room upstairs. Anyone interested contact me: Geoff Critchle, Chairman on: 015395 58883

Dear Editor, We are pleased to report that £900 was made at our recent charity sale held at Lower Village Hall. This fantastic amount will be divided between the Connie & Joe fund, Hospice at Home, South Cumbria NSPCC and Lower Holker Village Hall. Very sincere thanks go to all our loyal supporters. Betty Dickinson on behalf of Cartmel Valley Charities

Dear Editor, This letter is sent as a warning to unsuspecting motorists parking in Grange during what I have been calling 'the great siege' of Kents Bank Road. Maybe a few of you will have noticed the subtle, (!), cones, barriers, vans and various bright yellow, hard-hatted beings which have slowly taken over the landscape, moving at a snail’s pace along the thoroughfare digging and filling in as they go.... I too had noted their presence, but hadn't noted the other variety of interloper...the traffic officer....only ever seen during times of great crisis, (ie siege) , or

30

of great celebration, (Edwardian fair, extravaganza! Races etc). Be warned that this variety of being will charge you Fifty Quid of your hard-earned for parking infractions....ouch....unless you choose to park legally or in the kents bank road car park for 20p for 30 minutes while you nip into the coop or collect you prescribed necessities from the Well. I was so lucky the other day.... saved by a kind stranger who I had never met before who gave me 20p and saved me the 50 quid fine from the interloper who was waiting to catch me! Beware and keep 20p in the glovebox! I am keeping 40p then I can return the favour of the kind stranger. Thank you, whoever you were! Billie

Grange now | APRIL 2016 - Next deadline 13th MAY

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Editor, We would like to thank everyone for all their kind wishes, cards and gifts we received on the sad closure of our Shop and Post Office. We would especially like to thank all our loyal customers both in the Shop and via our Home Delivery Service for their support and custom to the very end - You were Amazing! We have had a really enjoyable 11 years and met some wonderful people (and characters!). It has been a pleasure and a privilege to live and work in such a lovely place and just sad it had to come to this end. Our heartfelt thanks and very best wishes to all of you. Tony and Debbie Ryan, formerly of Kents Bank Post Office.

Dear Editor, I have been concerned at the number of street lights that do not work along Kent’s Bank Road, along the Esplanade and up the hill past Cartmel Grange to the start of the de-restricted stretch of road. This has led me to, firstly, ascertain who has responsibility for these lights and, secondly, how to remedy the situation. Initial enquiry reveals that some of the lights are the responsibility of SLDC and some of Cumbria CC. At Cumbria CC the website suggests that contact is made by e-mailing …..betterhighways.southlakeland@ cumbria.gov.uk or phoning 0845 609 6609…or to….customer.services@ southlakeland.gov.uk or phoning 0845 050 4434 ….in each case giving the number on the lamp post for identification. The numbers beginning with a 1, e.g.100 are those of Cumbria Cc whilst those beginning with a 4, e.g.400 are those of SLDC. SLDC have responsibility passed to them by Grange Town Council by way of a fee paid to them via a precept to SLDC.

Dear Editor, Between Sunday 19th June and Friday 24th June, I will be leading a group from the North of England to visit Germany and Poland to commemorate the end of World War ll, seventy one years ago. We will fly with Flybe direct to Berlin. We will visit Berlin, Potsdam (where Churchill, Truman and Stalin signed the Potsdam Agreement), Stalag Luft

Whilst anyone passing may notice that a light isn’t working, it would seem that, unless the lamp post identity is provided, nothing will be done. No-one seems to have the responsibility of carrying out any routine check which suggests that if there’s any sort of incident which can be attributed to the failure of lighting, unless the Authority was told of the problem and did nothing about it, then there’s no liability on the Authority. This, therefore, suggests that it would be most helpful if Householders outside whose premises there is a defective light, were to report it as outlined above to get something done. The sudden absence lighting can be very disorientating to a passing motorist or cyclist which could prove tragic. It could be even worse for a pedestrian who could stumble and fall in the sudden darkness. The fact that there are so many different coloured lights in different parts of the town do not make for safer driving and the sooner there is conformity the better. Lawrence Woodley, Grange

Dear Editor, I had a lady call me recently about joining the WI. As we have not printed out our talks programme yet I told her to check in the Grange Now for future meetings. She replied that she had seen the notices about Grange WI in Grange Now which is why she had phoned me. She added that she had only moved to Grange about 9 months ago and finds Grange Now invaluable for keeping her informed on what is going on in the town. Without it she wouldn’t have realised just how there was to do and how many groups and organisations to join. Margaret Brennand on behalf of Grange WI

anonymous donation. The Committee would wholeheartedly like to thank the donor(s), and feel that this is an appropriate way to publicise what is a very magnanimous and generous gesture. Thank you very much indeed. Peter Nightingale – Chair, Prom Art.
