There has been a lot of talk over recent months about the Two Castles Housing site at Berners Close. Residents have spoken to us here at Grange Now to ask why the properties haven’t been sold, and why can’t they be turned into ‘affordable rents’ as these properties went almost immediately. We put the question to Greg Denwood, property services manager for development at Two Castles Housing Association and he sent this report: “We have been working hard to ensure all our new homes are quickly occupied, and we are delighted to report that, following a marketing campaign to promote the available properties, we have seen increased interest. One house is already sold and seven other properties are currently going through the sales process for people from the local area. We are confident that the remaining properties will also soon be sold.
The planning agreement meant that for the first three months the properties could only be made available to people with a connection to the immediate local area. Now that this initial period has elapsed we are able to make the homes available to people from the whole South Lakes District area who comply with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) criteria. Prior to the increased level of interest we’ve seen, we did approach the HCA to enquire whether the properties could be made available at affordable rent, rather than for sale. However, we were informed that as there is currently no funding for affordable rent, the properties must instead be sold. “With thousands of South Lakeland families on the housing waiting list, these new properties are helping to address the ever pressing need to provide quality affordable homes in the area.”
Joint Councillor Surgery If you have any issues you would like to raise with your local councillors, you can do so at the next councillor surgery which will take place, at the library, on Saturday
14th May between 10am -12noon. In attendance will be Councillor Tricia Thomas from Grange Town Council, Councillor Tom Harvey from South Lakeland District Council and
Cumbria County Councillor, Bill Wearing. Please note that if the library is not open for any reason the surgery will take place at Victoria Hall.
Cedric’s feet set for fame
On Saturday 2nd April, Cedric Robinson MBE received his most unusual accolade yet – his own footprints, cast into a bronze plaque. Grange Town Council presented them to him, at a well-attended presentation, in recognition of his fifty two years' service as the Queen's Guide to Morecambe Bay. Grange Town Councillor, Joanna Greenway told Grange Now: ”Cedric has walked more than the equivalent of twice round the world in his role, and helped local people raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charitable causes; this is indeed something to celebrate.” The plaque was made by Ulverston born sculptor, Ian Stoney. It was dedicated in honour of Cedric by the Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, Archbishop Emeritus of Liverpool, at the ceremony held at Victoria Hall. The bronze footprints will be set into the ground later this year at the entrance to Cedric Walk, named in tribute by Grange Town Council. Cedric Walk leads into Berners Close new affordable housing development. The sign and plaque will be a landmark for locals and cross-bay walkers to look out for in future.
Investment Matters By Andrew Throughton APFS
On the 16th March George Osborne delivered his latest Budget as chancellor and whilst there were a couple of new announcements, in truth the day was much about confirming the changes already scheduled for the tax year 2016/17. The key new announcements included:

Annual savings limit for ISAs to remain at £15,240 but will rise to £20,000 from 6 April 2017.
The introduction of a new ISA from April 2017 to be known as a LISA (Lifetime ISA) to help people, aged between 18 and 39 (at 6 April 2017), to save flexibly for the long term and ensure they do not have to choose between saving for retirement and saving for their first home. Contributions of up to £4,000 per tax year will receive a 25% bonus up to the point an individual reaches age 50. LISA contributions will sit within the overall ISA contribution limit of £20,000 per tax year and contributions from age 50 will not receive any government bonus There were also changes to Capital Gains Tax - for disposals on or after 6 April 2016, the higher rate of CGT will be reduced from 28% to 20% and the basic rate will be reduced from 18% to 10%. However, there will be an 8% surcharge for gains on residential property (that do not qualify for private residence relief) whereby the 28% and 18% rates will continue to apply. As detailed above many changes were

already announced and included:
The tax-free personal allowance of £11,000 in 2016-7 and the threshold at which people start paying 40p income tax increased to £43,000. A £5,000 tax free dividend allowance and a £1,000 savings allowance (£500 for higher rate tax payers).
The Lifetime Allowance for pensions reduced to £1million from April 2016. What the budget always highlights is that the world of finance constantly evolves; the importance of monitoring the changes in legislation is equally as important as reviewing the investments you hold in order to provide the best possible overall return to you.

Cumbria Young Farmers are the pride of the County Fans of the BBC’s Countryfile programme will know that Cumbria Young Farmers have been nominated for the Farming Heroes of the Year Award - and rightly so. Grange Now have been in touch with the County office in Penrith and we were told that the CYF quietly go about raising money and helping those in the community. Last year, they raised a staggering £53,000 for local charities, and their help was never needed more than when Storm Desmond hit Cumbria in December. Mark Curr, leader and spokesperson for Pennine YFC was one of the farmers who turned out to help those whose homes and livelihoods had been devastated by the flood waters. He told us: “The club collected tinned foods, clothing, bedding, pet food and cleaning equipment to make hampers for the local families who were hit by the flooding. Many of those affected are past members or members of the club themselves. In total, 23 hampers were made and some spare products were donated to Appleby food bank which has been running from the town’s collection points. These collection centres were set up so that flood victims in Appleby, and other towns, could get food and bare essentials as the bridges in town were closed, bringing the town to a standstill with many homes and businesses flooded.” The photo shows a former member’s farm which suffered severe damage as a result of a landslide. Mark told us: “Members spent their Sunday shovelling and moving mud in wheelbarrows from a farm shed where
the large diggers couldn’t get to. From 10 o’clock in the morning until 4pm, the members managed to get the shed back down to the concrete, ready to be washed out. The family made the club extremely welcome and thanked us for our help in clearing the shed which they could not have done by themselves”. Pennine also collected toys which were wrapped and distributed to local primary schools. Mark said: “Our aim was to give those children whose Christmas may have been ruined, a present, and a reason to smile on Christmas day.” Closer to home, Southern District Young Farmers (for their Countryside challenge) are helping David Mason from Heaves Farm at Levens clean up following the floods. Showing their versatility, eight female young farmers have qualified for the Show Choir National Final which will take place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on 8th May. Last September, for childhood cancer awareness month, Lowick Young Farmers decided to raise funds for CLIC Sargent. A spokesperson told us: “We made a good start a Lowick show with a “spot the dog” competition, how many balloons in the tractor and face painting, and it was then decided to continue to support CLIC Sargent throughout the year.
Our senior tug of war team had won at two other local shows and put the prize money ‘in the pot’. The proceeds from our annual Christmas whist drive and various other small fundraising activities have managed to raise a total of £1370.18. We are very proud of the amount raised so far and we know this will be put to good use by this very worthwhile charity.” To top it off, Cumbria were awarded the NFU Trophy for Champion County for the fifth year running - the first time any County has won this award so many times consecutively in the history of the award. Cumbria Young Farmers would be very worthy winners of the Countryfile title but they are already winners in our eyes.

Flookburgh lad wins a BAFTA Daniel Purcell, 32, a former Flookburgh Primary school pupil, is part of the team that has won a BAFTA at the BAFTA Academy Games Awards. Daniel was Lead Environment Artist on the PS4 game, ‘Until Dawn’ which was nominated for four awards at the prestigious event. Daniel is the youngest son of Ian and Barbara Purcell. Ian, an electrician, and Barbara, who is a director of Cromptons in Grange, told Grange Now: “We are so proud of him - he has worked so hard and is so dedicated.” Daniel said of Flookburgh School: “I got encouraged in the creative subjects by my teachers such as Art and Music as they saw I enjoyed working in those areas. I was surrounded by friends who were into video games, and being in the 80s and 90s, they were really taking off. I always had a keen interest in Video Games and Art, I
loved creating things and was always supported by my parents and brother to follow what I was interested in. I soon got a grasp of art at Cartmel School, but even then I knew I wanted to be in an art orientated job but wasn’t sure how or where. At University, I studied Computer Entertainment Technology and I left with a 1st Class Honours and a Focal Press Prize for Excellence and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends.”
Since leaving Leeds University, Daniel has worked for Lionhead Studios, Macrovision and Nik Nak Games before landing his current role at Supermassive Games; where he worked on games like Tumble and Big Match before being promoted to Lead Environment Artist. It is in this role that he started on an epic 5 year journey of development on, ‘Until Dawn’ which has won many awards including the BAFTA for Original Property. Daniel said: “I had the privilege of attending the awards and representing the Environment Art team. Everyone at Supermassive are amazingly talented and, as a team, we have made great leaps and bounds in the industry. I love working there and everyone I work with are like a family.” Daniel looks set for a glittering career in this highly competitive industry.
Great turnout for Victoria Hall meeting We are delighted to report that 90-100 people turned out to attend the meeting about the future of Victoria Hall. Councillor Tricia Thomas who, along with Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines, organised and ran the meeting, told Grange Now that she is very pleased with the response. “Those attending split up into small groups for ‘brainstorming’ sessions and these proved to be very productive. Dozens of post it notes from the meeting have been collected and the suggestions on them will be sorted and noted'" Councillor Thomas said. “Some suggestions have already come out of the session, including a film club, and the vast majority of those in attendance voted unanimously for a small increase in council tax to help cover the cost of the £28,000 shortfall. This would only add approximately
a few pounds onto everyone’s council tax bill.”
Councillor Thomas aims to set up a ‘Friends Group’ for the hall which will be run in a similar way to a PTA and will enable the group to get charitable status. Cllr Thomas told us: “If the group is run on this basis, it means we are able to apply for funding through various channels, which would not be available to the Town Council. There will be a follow up meeting in the summer where we will get down to the nitty gritty of setting up the group etc.” If you were unable to attend the meeting but would like to help out or have any ideas for future uses of the hall please contact: victoriahallmanager@ grangeoversands.net
Offenders apologise for trouble There have been a number of complaints in recent months about a group of youths who are causing a disturbance, and a mess, at the public toilets on Pig Lane. Those involved were treated to a visit by PCSO, Howard Firth. Following that, Grange Town Council were delighted to receive two letters of apology from two of the youngsters involved; one letter contained a cheque for £100 and the other a ten pound note.

Big swing dream 'made in Taiwan'
One of our former deliverers, Fionn Jordan-Tatlock, has been living, and working as an illustrator, in Taiwan for the past 6 months. Immersing himself completely in the lifestyle and traditions of Chiayi in South Taiwan, he recently took part in a 300 year old swing competition - and won! Fionn told Grange Now: “I flew out to Shanghai and spent several weeks painting the interior of a new, very high end bar with pictures of pandas and Chinese courtesans. Since then, I’ve been offered other wall drawing jobs, mostly in Taiwan, so I`m out here working, exploring the country and learning Chinese. The swing competition is run by a temple (the one in the picture), and the swing is the centrepiece of a one day festival where people come and watch, buy food and give their respects to the deity enshrined there (the swing festival takes place on the
deity's birthday). The entire thing is made of bamboo, even being tied together with strips of bamboo. Local people build it, and for the week before the event you can come and practice at any time. The competitors are mostly young to middle aged men, but there are always other people watching, often the pensioners that spend a lot of time socialising at the temple, which gives it a really nice community feel. I`m not the first foreigner to compete but I am the first to win!” Fionn has originally opted to take part in the singles competition, however: “Whilst I was practising, the doubles champion of the previous year was watching me. He came up to me afterwards and asked if I want to be his partner this year, as he didn't have someone to compete with, so I said yes and it turned out to be for the best” Fionn intends to stay in Taiwan until the end of the year.

Changing a child’s life. Fostering and adoption
Being a Foster Carer
D
- A personal story -
awn Limitsios from Barrow is both a foster carer and an adopter. She and her husband have adopted their six year old son, and are currently fostering a nine-month-old baby. They have two of their own biological children, aged 14 and 16. About six years ago the family made the first steps into fostering, after years of wondering if they were right for the role. They fostered an 18-month-old boy with emotional neglect issues, who was still unable to walk, talk, make eye contact or crave any interaction. His birth mother was unable to make an attachment with him due to her own emotional neglect in her past, so he was placed in the care of Dawn and her family. With patience and love Dawn saw slow improvements. Dawn and her husband ended up adopting him and he is now an active, loving, happy six year old. The fostering decision process took three years. The process was much longer back then. Current regulations state that a decision regarding the future of a fostered child should be made in six months, with some exceptions. She also provides short-term foster care, from anything between a couple of weeks to a couple of years, as well as respite care for those children whose current carers are unable to look after them for a few days. Dawn says: “A good foster carer needs to be patient, caring and able to commit fully to the children.” This meant giving up work for Dawn, as younger pre-school children and babies need that extra time and attention to form attachments.
8
Dawn emphasises that it never gets easier to say goodbye to a foster child. “ You have to remember that they will be fine, and you have done your job of providing that security no matter how short term for them. It never becomes easier though.” She says that whether adopted or being fostered “ All kids get treated the same in this house, whether they have been here for years or weeks. They are all part of the family. All the fostered children and our adopted son came with their own personal stories that you get support to work through.“ There are organised visits, social worker intervention and paperwork that go hand in hand with fostering. Of local support groups in the area Dawn says: “We meet up once a month, and sometimes have some training included. We have to undertake a certain amount of training each year to continue to foster and these groups help make up some of those hours. “The training sessions are very informative and range from learning about behavioural issues and attachment practices, to noticing signs of self harm.” With six people and a scatty Jack Russell terrier living in the house, organisation is key. Dawn says: “We are lucky to have the room, but yes, there are boxes of unisex clothes tucked away in the attic that just need topping up every time we have a new foster child arrive.” Dawn has one piece of advice for anyone thinking of fostering a child: “Just give it a go. You can try it and if it doesn’t work out then at least you will know. No one forces you to carry on and everyone is really supportive”
Grange now | MAY 2016 - Next deadline 13th MAY
Cumbria County Council estimates that over 970 children currently require foster care. Councilor Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Every year around 12 per cent of foster carers leave the service. Together with the comparatively high number of children coming into care, this means we are calling on local people to come forward. “The council already supports over 230 foster families across Cumbria. If you do decide to become a foster carer you will not be expected to ‘go it alone’.”
Who can foster?
As long as you can provide a loving home, a spare bedroom and have the time and commitment to foster a child then those are the first things that the various organisations look for. There are different types of fostering from short term care (ranging from a couple of weeks to a few years before the child can return to their original home), to permanent fostering. Legally you have to be over the age of 18 to foster, but some agencies have higher minimum age limits. Assessments are undertaken at the start of the process, including checking criminal records, as people with convictions for offences relating to children will be unable foster. This process can take approximately six months. Emma Weaver, of Community Foster Care (CFC), a notfor-profit organisation, says that carers can come from any walk of life: “I think that there are a lot of myths around who is eligible to foster. Carers have to be over 25 years of age for CFC to consider, and be fit enough to look after a child. There is no upper age limit, you can be single, in a relationship, have children of your own or be childless, be in rental accommodation. A person’s sexuality is not an issue. You don’t need formal qualifications, CFC will provide the training you require.” CFC are keen to recruit within South Cumbria so that children stay within their local community.
What is the process?
Security and medical checks are undertaken and references sought. A preparation workshop is offered to help aide understanding of what is to be expected in welcoming a new child or children into the family, and a series of home visits are done to help determine the best match of carer and child. The final part is the submission of a formal report to an adoption panel that considers the application and makes recommendations.

Singing for Memory Last month, we reported that Singing for the Brain was coming to an end because the Alzheimer’s Society, who was expected to take over the funding and running of the group from Grange Soroptimists, was unable to do so. However, even as the group sang their swan song, a new group was rising phoenix-like from the ashes and Singing for the Brain has been replaced by Singing for Memory. This will be run by volunteers, many of whom belong to Grange Soroptimists and will be funded by donations and weekly contributions from the group. These lively and stimulating sessions will not only be open to people and their carers coping with mild to moderate dementia, but to anyone who either through, accident, illness or ageing, has memory/language loss. Sessions are on Thursday mornings at Allithwaite Community Centre from 10.30 – 12.30. The two hour sessions consist of an hour of fun singing and activity, with time before and after to enjoy refreshments in the company of others. If you think the group would be right for you or would like more information please contact Janice Carrick 015395 58001 or Isabel Huggett 015395 36378

Fundraiser of the Year Award Val Isherwood, founder of local baby and child loss support charity, ‘Tigerlily Trust’ was awarded Fundraiser of the Year 2016 by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust (UHMBT) at the recent, ‘Your Health Heroes Awards’. Val began Tigerlily Trust after struggling to come to terms with the loss of her own baby, Lily, in 2011. She spent a year searching for the kind of support that would help her to heal after her devastating loss. A little over a year later Tigerlily Trust was launched! Since then, Val has worked tirelessly to provide support, hope and healing for other bereaved families.

Lower Allithwaite Parish Council have now signed a contract with specialist Neighbourhood Planning consultancy Kirkwells, based in Burnley, Lancs. This means that the Neighbourhood Plan, which has been slowly progressing for some months now, should begin to rapidly take shape, and we are hoping that the whole process should be complete by early next year, if not sooner. This will be a great boost to the Parish, as
it will open the door to enhanced community funding, as well as allowing the Parish to have a greater say in the planning process within its boundaries. More details of the Plan will be showcased at public engagement events to be held over the next few months in Allithwaite and Cartmel.

NOW OPEN IN BARROW
Buyers – don’t get caught out by the new higher rate Stamp Duty Land Tax! Complex new rules come into force from 1 April this year which affect people buying residential property in the UK if they already own or have an interest in other property anywhere in the world (not just the UK). Buyers do not need to worry if the property that they are buying is going to be their only residential property because they will not be affected by the changes and will continue to pay Stamp Duty at the standard rates as they would have done prior to the changes. If the property is to be a second home or a buy to let investment, the new higher rate of stamp duty will be payable at the rate of 3% of the whole purchase price if that is more than £40,000, in addition to the standard rate. Special rules and exemptions do apply in certain cases. If you are in the process of or are thinking of buying an additional residential property you may find that you will have to pay a significantly higher amount of Stamp Duty than you may have budgeted for which may even affect the viability of the purchase itself. If you would like some advice about the new Stamp Duty rates we are happy to advise you on this and recommend that you establish your potential liability before you proceed with your purchase. I am pleased to report the Saturday bus service (532) is up and running and from initial reports it is being well received and more importantly well used. At the end of March we held a meeting with potential volunteers for Grange Library. The County Senior Community Manager was there with Grange Library staff. He explained the role of the volunteers which was to help and enhance the work of the librarians not to replace them. Volunteer packs were distributed and hopefully a rota system will be in place by beginning of May. If anyone who could not make the meeting wishes to help please pick up a volunteer pack from the Library.
Some of you may have noticed that the zebra crossing lights in Main Street have been changed at my request to the new and more noticeable halo lights. These are one of only four sets being trialled in South Lakeland to emphasise the position of the crossings for pedestrian safety. A County Council Scrutiny Task Group is at present looking at the County’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. If anyone has any experiences of the service good or bad please contact me(bill.wearing@ cumbria.gov.uk ) and I will include this is in our report which will be presented to both the Council and Health Authorities with our findings and recommendations over the next few months. Kindest regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.
Country Crafts becomes The Blue Ribbon On 1st May, Laura Coward from Haverthwaite will be taking over the premises of Country Crafts in Grange. Laura, who has been working for current owner Pat Smith for the last 5 years, is looking forward to building on everything Pat has built up and will be continuing to sell craft materials, greeting cards, wool, knitting patterns, card making, picture framing. Laura told Grange Now “I will be changing the name to The Blue Ribbon and plan to stock the shop with gifts and items made
by local crafters. I also plan to run a loyalty card scheme.” Pat will be continuing to sell art materials and original paintings from home, and will be continuing under the name of Country Crafts. She will also carry on with her painting classes for small groups, mainly watercolours but dabbling in other media as well. Pat can be contacted on 015395 35811 or by email on p520smith@btinternet.com
Congratulations and best of luck to both Laura and Pat.

Barrow is a town of industry and ingenuity, so it is no surprise it has become the natural choice for Progression Solicitors, newest office. The company has been steadily expanding across the South Lakes and Furness Peninsula over the last ten years and will be opening the doors oftheir Barrow office on 4 April 2016. Overseeing the newest arm of the company will be Matthew Ratcliffe, one of their up and coming directors. Now at just 31 Matthew who was made Director two years ago following a string of highly successful cases is the perfect member of Team Progression to head up the Barrow office. Moving to the area having trained in Manchester, Matthew brought his city expertise to Furness and is loving every minute of it. Director Anthony Smith said
‘Barrow is a thriving town and the clear location to expand the focus of the Commercial side of our practice. Taking an electric bike round Cumbria's Cartmel peninsula
Electric bikes can help to take on otherwise daunting terrain, Rachael Oakden put one through its paces along Cumbria's Cartmel peninsula WALNEY TO WEAR: AN EBIKE HIKE Oh, the shame. I am tackling my first hill on an electric bicycle and I seriously think I may have to get off and push. To be fair, the relentless climb known as Bigland Hill is a whopper, one of the most challenging sections of the 152-mile Walney-to-Wear (W2W) cycle route. Without battery power I'm not sure I'd even want to walk up it, let alone cycle. But the point of electric bikes is to tackle otherwisedaunting terrain, and I've brought one to Cumbria's Cartmel peninsula to see what it can do.
ebike, with its eye-catching slim white frame. The lean machine was delivered to me at the Lakeside Hotel on Windermere by the Electric Bicycle Network, which has hire points and charge points across the Lake District and other national parks. The minimum legal age for riding one is 14, making them perfect for families with teenagers or out-of-practice parents keeping up with younger kids. CONVERSATION STARTER Researching the area for future family outings, I did the first part of my journey under someone else's steam, on the bikefriendly Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Standing on the platform, I discovered that being in possession of an ebike is like having an unusual breed of dog. It provokes stares of curiosity and starts conversations with strangers: where did you get it, how much does it cost, is it hard work? Hard work, yes, at least where Bigland Hill is concerned. The summit appears after a mile of twisting agony, after which it is all dreamy downhill gliding through woods and lanes lined with damson blossom. In Cartmel I refuel at the Pig and Whistle, a familyfriendly pub (with an affordable kids' menu) now owned by chef Tim Smith and his wife, Emma. Then it's back uphill the way I came, the longer, gentler ascent proving well within my battery-charged capabilities. Cresting Bigland Hill, plunging downwards at a sharp angle with my wrists bent backwards over the brakes, I am proud of my earlier achievement – until two "real" cyclists overtake me on road bikes. Their Lycra-clad bottoms recede into the distance, and I resolve to save that sticky toffee pudding for the kids.
A TOUCH OF INTUITION Biking friends rolled their eyes when I told them I was going "cycling" on an ebike; I wish they could see me now, pedalling until my thighs scream and lungs gasp. Modern ebikes have intuitive batteries that give you an extra push when you're going uphill, but they don't do all the work. Given that I'm heading to Cumbria's fine-food hotspot, this may be a good thing – I'd like to feel that I've earned my visit to the Cartmel sticky toffee pudding shop. However, I'm in the lowest of nine gears, my stamina flagging. I pull over to "take a photograph" (collapse by the roadside), relieved to find the road so quiet that no cars have witnessed my struggle, yet. I used to own an electric bike, about a decade ago when I was a home-counties commuter. It emitted an embarrassing hum as it propelled me uphill, and was so heavy I could barely manoeuvre it. So I was smitten when introduced to this new-generation

Tim’s column
Sorry if I am beginning to sound like a stuck record but I continue to be preoccupied by the aftermath of the flooding back in December. The A591 North of Grasmere remains closed and, although we have a re-opening date of mid-May, businesses in the Lakes will continue to lose about half a million pounds a day due to the closure. MidMay will mean that yet another bank holiday weekend where businesses can start to claw back the income they have lost is missed. I am ceasing to believe that this Government really cares about anything that happens to ordinary people, particularly if they live in the North of England. When they faced with a similar challenge with the flooding of the Dawlish train line in Cornwall (where the Prime Minister often takes his holidays) the repairs were complete in 5 weeks. In Cumbria we have had to wait 5 months to get a similar result. We have seen a similar lack of urgency in the Government’s application for the emergency funds that we are due from the EU to help us to clean up and rebuild after the floods. They left it until the very last minute to apply for the funds (much of which will be made available to us more or less immediately the application is approved) and the other day I learnt that the EU is still waiting for some further information from the Government before they can process the claim. 5 months is far too long to take on a matter of this urgency. I doubt very much I would get re-elected if I sat on any of your problems for 5 months.
Away from floods, I have been pursuing another example of poor care on the part of our local hospital trust. In this case they discharged an 83 year old woman in the middle of the night from the Royal Infirmary in Lancaster, putting her in a taxi which dropped her off at her front door at 2.20 am. No one was there to meet her as the hospital had not seen fit to tell any of her friends or relatives, fortunately a kindly neighbour was wakened and helped her to get in to her home. Who knows what would have happened if this had not been the case. I have written to the Trust and to Simon Stevens, the head of NHS England, to demand an enquiry into how this was allowed to happen to ensure it doesn’t happen again. The trust has agreed to investigate the issue and we will see what they come back with. Finally apologies for not mentioning in my last Grange Now column that I had a surgery in Grange during April. Thanks to everyone who managed to find this out* through some means other than my passing on the message. The next one is at 10am on Friday the 24th June but if you can’t wait that long please do get in touch, either email tim@timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support, Tim

Featured Artist: ‘Artists of the future’
Ross is through to the next round of 500 words
This month, we are focussing on the next generation of artists, and in particular, writers. Over the last month, children from two local primary schools have impressed judges when it comes to the written word. 24 pupils from Allithwaite Primary School are set to be published in a book entitled; ‘Poetry Emotions’ which is published by Young Writers, and will come out later this year. Their poems are amongst 294, which were selected by judges, from schools all over the Northwest. Young Writers have been working with schools, parents and young writers across the world for over two decades, and are in fact celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Lindsay Joyce told Grange Now: “Our aim is to promote poetry and creative writing. We run annual competitions, produce poetry and creative writing collections as well as provide resources for teachers and young writers.”
How do you pick a winning poem?
I asked Lindsay about the criteria for picking a poem and she told us: “Once the books have been finalised for corrections, an editor will go back through the book making any final corrections. As they do this, they will also note any good entries they spot. They will then re-read these shortlisted entries, and make their final selection based on whether they are original in their content; well rounded and thought-out poems, with the story or message of the poem clear from the beginning all the way through to the
end; that they have a good use of language; use poetry techniques in a way which enhances the effect of the poem – eg: rhyme/rhythm; that they are written in a style that is appropriate for the subject matter and finally, if they are particularly imaginative or moving, depending on the subject matter.” The book is due to come out in July. Another future star is Ross Giblin, a Year 6 pupil from Grange Primary. Ross entered BBC 2 presenter, Chris Evans’ 500 word competition with his story, ‘Adam’s Apple’ and has managed to get through to the next stage. It is a national competition, and Ross’s story is one of only 4,500 stories selected out of over 123,400 entries. This is a fantastic achievement and Ross’s story will now go to the Reading Agency for the second round of judging. He will find out in early May if he has been shortlisted to the final 50. Candy beetroot, grilled stumpy goats cheese and red chard salad Colour has been slow to return to the landscape this year so it is gratifying to have an energising blast of pink and white from the candy beetroot that is just coming into season. Known for its beautiful pink and white concentric rings, which turn to a delicate pink when cooked, the candy beetroot has a sweet and earthy flavour and provides vibrancy if sliced thinly and mixed through salad leaves. It is also ideal as a garnish – when grated its unique flesh patterning is shown to pleasing visual effect. Inspired by the candy beetroot’s impressive colour and taste, Low Sizergh chef, Paul Archer has chosen to partner it with plenty of fresh local produce to create a lovely lunch dish: Method
Ingredients Golden beetroot Lancashire Sourdough loaf More Bakery Red chard Growing Well Goats’ Cheese Stumpies Thornby Moor Dairy Apple Olive oil Red wine vinegar Chives
Wash the beetroot (unpeeled) and place in a saucepan. Cover with water, add a pinch of salt and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30-40 minutes or until tender. Drain and then leave to cool to room temperature. Peel with a small sharp knife. Cover and place in the fridge to chill. Cut thick slices from the sourdough loaf and brush with olive oil before toasting under the grill. Wash the red chard and drain. Arrange some of the leaves in a salad bowl and then place the sliced sourdough around the leaves. Quarter the apple and roughly dice. Sprinkle it over the leaves and bread. Slice the goats’ cheese and grill until golden brown. Meanwhile, thinly slice the beetroot and arrange on the salad. Sprinkle the salad lightly with olive oil and red wine vinegar. Arrange the goats’ cheese on the salad at the last minute to ensure it is still warm. To finish, sprinkle some finely sliced chives over the salad.

New summery flavours at Higginsons It might not be quite ‘al fresco-dining’ weather just yet, but that’s no reason to miss out on tasty seasonal food! We’ve been busy developing a range of gourmet summery specialities that are packed with Mediterranean flavours, and are oven-ready in just half an hour. They are ideal for mid-week meals and dinner parties alike, but are all designed to maximise taste and minimise time. From the melting Pork & Beef Pepper Patties and the Chicken, Ham & Cheese Melts that the kids love, to our individual Weekday Chicken Wellingtons, we will have a selection of these tempting parcels available in the shop every day. They are also great value at only £3 each, but keep a look out for the weekly pick and mix special offers! Local Spring Lamb is here! We now have Cumbrian Spring Lamb instore, sourced from our local auction. The quality and flavour is simply unbeatable, and we are offering a great selection of all the best joints and cuts, in addition to pre-portioned and boxed ‘Half Lamb’ packs, which
are ideal for the freezer or even for gifts! Herdwicks the word on everyone’s lips at the moment - but we’re more about the taste! ‘Herdwick’ is turning into something of a Lake District mascot. What with James Rebanks 40,000 strong Twitter following and best-selling memoir, to the recently launched ‘Go Herdwick’ Art Trail scattered across the Lakes in support of the Calvert Trust. Lakeland Herdwick meat should be justifiably celebrated too! It’s dark colouring and distinctive flavours are down to the heather and moorland diet of the sheep that graze the upland fells. All the Lakeland Herdwick meat sold at Higginsons is PDO regulated and farm assured, which means that the lambs were born, raised and slaughtered in Cumbria. Although we usually have a supply available, we recommend to phone ahead in advance.

Grange Methodist The Women’s Network service on Tuesday afternoon in Holy Week, was led by Joy Campton. Joy had set a table with lovely spring bulbs in pots, set out, along with the symbols of the crucifixion and communion.
St. Mary’s, Allithwaite The most exciting event of the past month has been the arrival of the Revd Rachel Stavert as a Team Vicar in the Cartmel Peninsula Team Ministry with particular responsibility for the parishes of Allithwaite and Flookburgh. St John’s Church, Flookburgh was filled to overflowing on April 8th for the service of licensing by the Bishop of Carlisle and installation to the parishes by the Archdeacon of Westmorland and Furness, the venerable Penny Driver, when representatives of both churches
St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Following the closure and sale of St. Cuthbert’s chapel in Flookburgh, the stained glass window depicting the patronal saint was removed in sections and has been in storage awaiting a new home. It is hoped that the first steps to having the window installed at St. Charles and St. Cuthbert’s church will be taken in the fairly near future. The project will take some time to complete as it will involve
St Paul’s, Grange Although the weather on the day of our Spring lunchtime concert was far from Spring-like, quite a crowd came and enjoyed Charles Edmondson’s recital of music for piano and organ. and the local community were able to greet and welcome her and Bishop James spoke on a passage from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians emphasising the need for growth and maturity in the Christian faith. Following the service a delicious buffet supper in the adjoining Church room gave opportunity for personal greetings, and a Welcome Lunch at Allithwaite following the Sunday morning services on April 10th provided a further occasion for meeting Rachel informally. With three services most Sundays at 8 o’clock, 9.30 and 10.45 am and many new people and situations to get to know Rachel will appreciate our prayers that God will strengthen
and equip her and bless her new ministry in both parishes. At the welcome lunch it was also good to renew contact with the Dobbing family, our former CMS mission partners in Nepal who were in the area on holiday. Since their return to the UK last summer they have been living near Edinburgh where Paul has a job in IT with a Christian charity. We have recently become linked as mission partners with another CMS family – the Marshalls – who are working with refugees in Malta and we look forward to meeting them and discovering more about their work at some point in the future.

51 sun salutations for flood victims Local Ashtanga yoga teacher, Shelley Osman, along with a group of her Yoga students, got together to practice yoga, and to raise money for those affected by the floods. The group, which consisted of students aged between 27 and 70, did 51 sun salutations (9 Yoga postures repeated 51 times) which is a vigorous sequence. SCHOOL REPORTS
Allithwaite Primary
In mid-March, Cartmel Priory School was invited to join the Rotary Club Technology Tournament. We took two teams of four Year 7 students to take part in a design and engineering task, which was a bridge building challenge. Our students were excited and keen to get involved, which would turn out to be a really positive experience and one that I’m sure they’ll remember for some time.
"Our classroom is so cool now"
Allithwaite School has recently refurbished their Nursery and Reception rooms, and the pupils have come back after the Easter holidays to lots of new and exciting things in their classroom. The main classroom has been split into different areas and one of the favourite places is the new reading den. It is filled with cushions and the children love to go and hide in it with one of their favourite stories. There is a new messy area
with a painting easel and a playdough station where the children have been creating different cakes and biscuits with glittery playdough. The new dressing up rail allows the children to choose whether they are going to be a pirate, police officer or princess! The responses from the children themselves have been fantastic, one child said “Our classroom is so cool now, I like all the new areas” and another said “The new rugs and mats make our class looks like a rainbow”.
We competed against other South Lakes schools - our students were amongst the youngest there and up against other year groups with a lot more experience. They handled themselves really well and, ultimately, one of our teams came runner up in their group (pictured Lara C, Faye H, Charlie E & Luke A). Teams were given time to draught a portfolio demonstrating their design idea on paper
Cartmel Priory School
and the rest of the afternoon was given over to bridge building and testing. I found the testing part to be most nerve wracking as your hard work is put to the test in front of the other teams. I was joined by our Science Technician, Mrs Vickers, to form a staff team. We competed in the advanced category, which I’m proud to say we won. We fought off stiff competition to maintain the school’s honour as
my predecessor,Mr D Wilson, had also won the previous year! I would like to extend our gratitude to the Rotary Club for putting on such a well organised and engaging event, and congratulate our students on their superb performance. We are very much looking forward to seeing the students compete again next year. Mr F Wilson Subject Leader, Design & Technology

Greater flexibility with the age at which children are left in our care has also been highlighted. After 23 years at the Institute in Allithwaite, Acorn Montessori are moving to new premises in September. The nursery has leased a classroom at Cartmel Primary School, and while it will continue to be run independently, it will also benefit from enhanced facilities and close links with the school. Although sad to be leaving Allithwaite, owner/manager Melanie Knight, is delighted at the prospect of the move, “It will provide more space and improved facilities with free-flow access to outdoor spaces for the children to access the curriculum both inside and outside.” Cartmel Primary Headteacher, Rachel Battersby, is looking forward to welcoming the nursery school. “We will be in the unique position of being able to offer education in Cartmel from 2 to 16 years. Children can enter at nursery stage, progress through their primary stages and secondary stages, all within our beautiful village setting.”

If you have a child of nursery age or you would just like to come and have a look around to see what we offer please come along, sessions will run from 10am – 12 noon. We are delighted with the success of our children at the South Cumbria Music Festival this year. We are also extremely proud of all 6 girls who came 2nd place at the Key Step 1 Gymnastics County final at Penrith on 23rd March, in the large schools competition. It is an excellent achievement which they deserve after all their hard work and great performances. Congratulations also to Ross Giblin who has recently got through to the final 4500 of the BBC 500 Words Writers Competition. Also on the 14th, is a Glass Fusing Workshop run by the talented Marilyn Hale over at her studio at Newland, near Ulverston and is aimed at both the experienced as well as those looking to try their hand at a new craft. Again, the full day only costs £30 per learner and numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. On 21st May, we are planning to run a 3 hour Pilates Masterclass for those dedicated followers, with tutor Tasha Jones, at Cartmel Primary School Hall from 10am to 1pm, at a cost of only £17 per place. We also still plan to run the workshops

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Five star hotel next to Grange Station Ginny Harris from Grange Outdoor Nature Club has been in touch with the following update on the bug hotel. On a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon in April members of Grange Outdoor Nature Club, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Spooniversity and Grange in Bloom came together to build a beautiful, bountiful Insect Hotel. We all worked very hard to get the job done, and, in fact, the whole structure was put together in just over an hour. All the nooks and crannies will provide shelter for a huge range of insects, molluscs, mammals and maybe some reptiles. Building the hotel was great education for the kids and, even better, they didn’t even notice they were learning. They found out about life cycles, co-operation, how ancient civilisations made tools, woodworking and construction. It was great how we all worked together and lovely to see so many different groups, ages and backgrounds coming together
for a common goal; together we made something special. Right now, the Insect Hotel is covered by a tarpaulin to protect it from the rain. Soon though, the pillars we made will be set around the construction. They will support a custom-made slate roof which will give the job a really professional touch. You

Many thanks to Grange Building Supplies for donating the breeze blocks and pallets. All the other supplies were reclaimed or recycled. Huge thanks to all the adults who helped.
Spooniversity of Grange.
Spooniversity of Grange was set up as a non profit group a few years ago to get people into Ancient woodlands, to learn traditional crafts, trees, wildlife and conservation. We are also a social group, where we sit around the campfire and chat. We are planning to expand the skill further in the future to include as well as spoon carving, also leather work, knife making, and wild food preparation among others. All for just £20.00 per season, or £5.00 for a taster session. We meet every second Sunday of the month, so if you are interested please contact Tony on 07961 054 114 or visit our Facebook page.
Danny is the 'best man' for the job Danny the pony and his handler Saskia Read, from Meathop, have been working to restore woodland at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Barkbooth Lot Nature Reserve, Crosthwaite. The beautiful woodland is an old oak plantation that also has birch, ash, rowan and yew trees and a stunning carpet of bluebells in spring. But non-native larch trees in one area have sadly had to be cut down due to the threat of Phytophthoraramorum disease which has become widespread across the UK and for which there is no cure. Joe Murphy, Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Senior Reserves Officer says, “Ponies are the best way to remove felled logs from our woodland nature

Cartmel in Bloom Spring plant sale has become an annual event, and this year’s sale will take place on Sunday 1st May at Cartmel Village Hall between 10am and 3pm. Cartmel In Bloom chair, David Crabtree told Grange Now: ”People know that they will get excellent quality plants at very competitive prices but that they also can come with a friend or family member and have a cup of tea and a piece of

The event coincides with the Antiques Fair which takes part in the main room of the Village Hall, and so attracts visitors to the village as well as locals. Plants are sold from under a marquee and the supper room operates as a cafe for the day. Other things such as lavender bags, candles made by volunteers or even art donated by the Cartmel Art Society are also often for sale.
Helping to keep the life of Grange buzzing! With the coming of May, our senses tell us that spring has truly arrived. It’s a time of year I always look forward to as so many of our gardens and parks are blooming with dashes of vibrant colour. But we must not forget those all important bugs, without whom there would be no birds and mammals, and many gardens pests such as aphids and whitefly would go unchecked. Many of our flowers would also fail to pollinate, set seed or produce fruit without the help of pollinating insects such as bees, hoverflies and butterflies. And the benefits of pollinators are not limited to just our gardens and allotments. Sadly, according to many of our national organisations such as The Royal Horticultural Society, The Wildlife Trusts, the Bumblebee
Conservation Trust, our wild bees and other pollinators are considered to be in decline. By planting nectar and pollen rich flowers over a long season, we can help reduce this by growing more pollinator friendly plants. So, when you buy your plants and shrubs look out for this logo on the labels and encourage your plant supplier to stock them. The RHS Perfect for Pollinators mark is only given to plants that support pollinating insects in gardens. Find out more at rhs.org. uk/plants At the beginning of June, Grange library is hosting a display that illustrates how you can attract pollinators to your gardens. So come and have a look Thanks to Izzy Thorne for writing this article.

“The Perfect Plot for us” We bought a shed and it’s a great place to sit, with a cup of tea or coffee. Our greenhouse overlooks Cartmel racecourse, we can look through our tomato plants and see horses galloping by. We bought some perspex covers which fit snugly over seed trays to protect our sweetcorn, peas, broad beans, runner beans, sweet peas and sunflowers. Over the years we have experimented with a variety of vegetables and now have a number of favourites, Cylindra beetroot, an ideal size and shape for pickling and making chutney, a family favourite. Sweetcorn, ideally picked and cooked as soon as possible - even if it means running home with them to ensure they are at their very best! Climbing french and runner beans, normally grown on various “Heath Robinson” structures, but grown
for the first time last year on a new framework, the design came from The Kitchen Garden monthly magazine and proved very successful, namely it didn’t fall down in the wind when overloaded with greenery and beans. A variety of annual and perennial flowers are grown on Cartmel Allotments, many visitors to events at the Village Hall often remark on the wonderful sight and riot of colour during the summer months and the pollinators love them as well. An Open Day in August each year is held for members of the public to see for themselves the wonderful mixture of ways the eleven allotment holders work their individual plots. Money made from the sale of produce at the last Open Day enabled a donation of £100 to be given to St Mary’s Hospice. Sandra & Philip Pascall

The April meeting was well attended and opened with Jerusalem after which the usual business was dealt with and birthday cards distributed. The speaker, Dr Isobel Stirk gave an exceptionally well researched talk on Life in a Moorland Village made famous by the Brontes. She drew attention to the conditions in the workhouses and the general poverty endured by the villagers. The Bronte sisters did not engage or involve themselves with village life being on the moors in summer and incarcerated in the house during the winter months. Isobel Stirk's talk was well received by members who asked many questions during the plenary session afterwards. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 3rd May at Allithwaite Community Centre when Laura Wyatt will be talking about Grasmere Gingerbread and providing samples for members to try. New members are always welcome and the meeting begins at 2pm.

On 23rd March, seven Ramblers went on a circular walk from Elterwater taking in Skelwith Bridge, Colwith Force waterfall, Stang End and Slater’s

Though the weather was overcast, with occasional spots of rain, they all thoroughly enjoyed the six-mile scenic route, which ended with a splendid cup of tea in the café by the car park. The walk was led by Tony Harrison. On 31st March, seven walkers set off from Swan Hotel Newby Bridge for a 6 mile circular walk, the immediate ascent route took us within 30 minutes up to Water Side Knott, we passed Finsthwaite Tower continued through the woodland, took a break at Finsthwaite church, through the footpath between houses, over the fields, we came to Low and High Dam, there were some families and dog walkers about to enjoy the freedom of outdoor during half term school holiday, lunch was taken in the sun by the High Dam, returning through some wet boggy area we reached the nice bridle way within Finsthwaite estate back to cars. The day was misty at start, sunny, light drizzle and cold at the time, a typical spring day in Lake District!

NSPCC Grange over Sands
We were all extremely sad to learn of the death in February of our friend and great supporter of the NSPCC, Elizabeth Ross. She served on the Committee for 20 years during which time she took on the onerous task of Treasurer for several years. In her memory donations from a collection in the United Reformed Church raised £437.50, which went to the local NSPCC. We all miss her very much and our sympathy is extended to her husband, Stewart. On Saturday, 7th May, the stalwarts of Grange over Sands NSPCC will be out and about holding collections in our town - hoping for good weather! Then our next event will be the Summer Coffee Morning on Saturday, 28th May, in the United Reformed Church Hall from 10am - 12 noon. We look forward to a very pleasant and sociable morning.
Grange Probus Club
On the 11th of April, Edward Lawson gave a talk and performance entitled Music in Nature. Playing an oboe he began with The Lark in the Still Air and
part of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. He went on to play several pieces which had been inspired by nature and ended with Hedwig the owl’s theme from Harry Potter. Probus is for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members welcome. Chairman - Russell Bloxsom 34595, Secretary - Ewen Cameron 32319.
Newton & Field Broughton WI
The April meeting of Newton & Field Broughton WI was a busy one as usual. Members were thanked for helping with the Lindale village litter pick. They were also reminded of the Federation appeal for bottles, scarves and plants for the stalls in the WI marquee at Holker Garden Festival. Following the business meeting we were enthralled by Emma Wright’s talk about Tudor times and cooking at the NT property Townend, in Troutbeck. Emma came dressed as Elizabeth Birkett whose cookery book, dated 1699, was found in the Townend archives. Emma set the scene by showing us photos of the property, both inside and outside and then proceeded to tell us about Elizabeth’s recipe book. The book contains medicinal as well as cookery recipes, such as how to stop nose bleeds and cures for epilepsy, which astounded and horrified the audience. Cookery recipes for jumbles, small cakes, shred pies as well as roasting a pike, a Mediterranean chicken recipe and a venison pie were explained and fascinated us all. Our next meeting is on May 11th when National WI Resolutions will be discussed. We will hold a Bring and Buy stall for ACWW and our own funds.
Grange Fell Golf Club (F)
Our season opened on 29th March with Lady Captain’s Drive in over 9 holes. It was won by Ronnie Hall with 17 pts with Christine Bold 2nd (16 pts). The Captain versus Vice-Captain’s match was a resounding victory for the Vice-Captain’s team! On 2nd and 9th April, the Ladies held ‘taster’ sessions to encourage new members. Although 2nd April was very wet, both days proved successful. Our thanks go to Lady Captain (Carol Campbell) and all who helped, including Ernie Foster, our professional. April 12th, saw our first medal played. The winner was Jill Atkinson.
Grange & District Lions Club.
Since our last report the Club had a visit from our District Governor Mike Bagnall. Mike detailed the magnificent contribution by Lions Clubs from all over the North West to aid victims of the December Floods. Not only in providing much needed cash, but also providing practical support help restore some normality to those affected. A wider, inspirational view of the collective achievements of Lions Clubs from all over the UK, reminds members that their individual efforts are always worthwhile. Our annual junior 5-a-side competition is once again scheduled for July. Schools will be contacted directly with the date and times. With more and more girls wishing to play football, some schools have to enter additional teams. Ladies football is becoming very popular in the UK. I wonder how long it will be before
Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. we have an all girls team win the Lions “Stonecraft” trophy. Friends of Grange Lions (FOGL) application forms will be available on our stall at the Edwardian Festival in June. Annual subscription is only £5 per year. The Masonic Hall was an ideal venue for our meeting on Maundy Thursday as members needed lots of space for their flower arranging session. Our President, Janet Ferguson, guided us through creating an Easter themed flower display, complete with eggs and Easter chicks. By the end of the evening the tables were overflowing with beautiful displays to take home for Easter. Terry Bond will be coming to our May meeting to talk about the Witches of Pendle. By this meeting we will have decided on our future venue so please contact Margaret on 36735 if you are interested in coming to this meeting.
Coffee Club
In March we welcomed back Linda Robinson, who has previously told us of her trips to North Korea and West Africa. It was during her latter visits she learnt of the tragedy of the Ugandan ladies who were rendered destitute after losing their husbands. Linda set up a scheme whereby lovely puddings, (as made for Fortnum and Mason) are being sold and the profits used to buy pregnant goats for these poor ladies and so restore them in their society. Many Grange Now readers have bought and enjoyed these puddings and thus helped the project. In March Linda shared how, by studying the familiar Shepherd’s psalm 23, she had discovered not only what the psalm meant to David’s pastoral contemporaries, but also how we can today find new truths of God’s love and concern for ordinary people like us. Linda certainly shared her enthusiasm for ‘digging deeper’ into familiar Bible passages. On May 17th we expect to have a visit from a couple who have been working to help AIDS victims in central Africa. Details of the meeting will be advertised locally in Grange. The meeting at 10.30am at Abbot’s Hall will be preceded by coffee.
Grange Garden Society
On 15th April, members were treated to a very informative talk by Peter Foley, late of Holden Clough Nursery. Peter gave us detailed guidance on the pruning of a long list of different species, with particular emphasis on the correct time to make the cuts. He was very helpful with the age-old problem of how much to take off at any one time. His pruning demonstration was followed by a slide show, which introduced many excellent varieties and explained their management. Peter brought a good range of shrubs and alpines, which were available for members to purchase. At the next meeting, on 20th May, Steven Halliwell will talk to us about Gresgarth Gardens Through The Seasons. Look out for the Society stall at the Edwardian Festival on 11th June and on 17th June come to a talk on Climbing Plants by Lynn Brunetti. All summer meetings are held in the URC Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors welcome.

Grange and District U3A
The U3A Enrolment Morning in March was very well attended. Many of the interest groups were represented, and new members enjoyed looking round and deciding what to sample. The recently formed country dancing group attracted a lot of interest. The Birdwatching group continues to thrive. Recently they had a very successful visit to the RSPB reserve at Burton on the Wirral and whilst they were in the area they had fruitful stops at other Dee Estuary locations. The birders are planning a short break
in Northumbria, with excursions to Coquet Island and the Farne Islands.
Local Explorers have had a combined visit to Rydal Mount and Rydal Hall in March and Highhead Castle in April. Out and About visited St Helens Glass Museum and Speke Hall in April, and there will be a holiday in September to Constable Country. The bowling and gardening groups have resumed after the winter and a new Italian group has been formed.
Juniors knock the socks off the competition North Lonsdale Tennis Club started off the season with an American Tournament. All ages and abilities took part as partners are mixed around. The winners were Joanne Read and Rod Martindale, and runners-up Martyn Willacy and Jane Woodley.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands
Welcome to our Spring Newsletter, where we tell you about what we've been doing and our plans for the next few months. January
February
March
We started the year with a 3 course New Year's Day lunch made by our cooks. It was delicious.
The improved weather meant we were out and about in Grange, with several visits to the Ornamental Pond followed by tea and cake in the various cafes nearby. A few residents visited the Laurel and Hardy museum and statues in Ulverston.
It was a very busy month, we went to Grange several times to feed the ducks, go for walks on the Prom and do a little shopping. Some of the residents went out to the musical Annie in Grange at the start of the month. It was very entertaining.
It may have been a wet start to the new year, but this didn't stop us cramming in as much as possible, including leather craft work and making making flower window decorations to brighten up The Old Vicarage.
We had traditional meals on St. David's Day as well as St. Patrick's Day. We also had a Mothering Sunday meal surrounded by flower displays prepared by the residents.
At the end of the month we began to make a series of Valentines Day decorations. We planted lots of seeds, which in time we hope to put in the garden as they grow.
A grand day out at the Laurel & Hardy museum in Ulverston The residents started on 6 feet tall daffodil and leek models for st. David's Day as well as St. Patrick's Day craft work and flags. The residents also made an amazing cherry blossom display.
All we could eat and drink on New Years Day
We managed to find time for some baking, making some appetising fairy cakes. They looked good enough to eat – so that’s what we did.
The wet weather meant we had a lot of time for one to one sessions, with chats about the past, painting and lots of games.
We had a series of visits with Stephen Watson, the origami expert coming at the start of the month and John Mario gave a grandstanding concert performance which got everyone singing.
Jean Marks the amazing accordionist visited in the middle of the month and her music was much appreciated. We ended the month with a Burns Night meal. After reading an Ode to the Haggis, we all tucked in - it was a unique experience.
Forthcoming Outings in May & June Beetham Nursery
Abbot Hall Art Gallery
Holker Hall Food Market
The duo Nostalgia Singers came for the first time – it won’t be the last as the residents were singing and dancing and had a blast. Schoolchildren from Allithwaite Montessori performed their Easter concert, which all the residents thoroughly enjoyed.
The smell of fresh flowers filled The Old Vicarage The residents also made lots of decorations and put them up for Easter, which of course was celebrated with a special meal and Easter Eggs for all our residents and staff.
The Old Vicarage has a few vacancies for residents. If you would like to come and look around or want further information please ring us on 015395 33703
LETTERS
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor, Two Castles Housing Association is having difficulty in finding applicants, with family or work connections to Grange-overSands, for 11 of their shared ownership 'affordable homes' at Berners. This is shocking news because we are only in year 3 of SLDC's 12 year Local Plan. Throughout the Local Plan consultation process SLDC insisted that Grange-over-Sands needed 157 additional 'affordable homes' between 2013 and 2025. They based this target on household projections modelled by their 'expert' advisers. We submitted written and oral evidence showing that Arc4's household projections were based on flawed statistical methods and were an over-estimate of Grangeover-Sands' 'affordable housing need'. Our evidence was ignored. SLDC's policies ensure that South Lakeland's 'affordable homes' are financed by limiting planning permission to developments that include 35% 'affordable homes', subsidised by 65% market housing. To achieve their 157 'affordable homes' target for Grange-overSands a total 449 new homes were allocated to the town in SLDC's Local Plan. Now, three years into SLDC's Local Plan, we learn that the Two Castles Housing Association cannot find enough local people, who meet both the financial and local connections requirements for 11 of the shared ownership 'affordable homes' at Berners. The housing association has told Grange-over-Sand's Town Council that they need to allow applications from people with family
or work connections to other parts of South Lakeland in order to find occupants for these properties. SLDC's policies allow them to do this as long as the properties have been advertised exclusively, for people with local connections, for three months. This is scandalous! Councillors and our MP have told us, on many occasions, that the Berners' properties are for people with family or work connections to Grange-over-Sands and the Cartmel peninsula. 'Affordable housing' allocations for people with connections to other parts of South Lakeland, such as Allithwaite, Cartmel, Kendal, Ulverston etc..., are also included in SLDC's Local Plan. The housing association's problem implies that: SLDC's 'expert' advisers over-estimated Grangeover-Sands' 'affordable housing need', or, The type of homes available at Berners are unsuitable for qualifying households with family or work connections to our town, or The 'shared ownership' model is unsuitable for qualifying households, or Local people, who assumed that they qualified for 'affordable homes', do not meet SLDC's financial requirements. Two other Grange-over-Sands' sites already have planning permission for another 28 'affordable homes' and 53 market homes. If there are not enough local people, who meet SLDC's financial criteria, to fill these 'affordable homes' SLDC cannot justify ruining our town by granting planning permission to any more inappropriate developments. Your sincerely Valerie Kennedy On behalf of a group of local residents
Dear Editor, What a lovely display of red tulips on the walls of the ornamental gardens. A welcoming sight as you enter Grange, for both visitors and residents. P.Pascall Cartmel
Dear Editor, Lindale Stores and Post Office Many villages across the country are gradually losing the amenities that give a focus to village life. Lindale has not escaped this. We have heard recently of the problems facing St Paul's church and the Lindale Inn has now closed. Sadly the shop is also struggling and, without local support, could face a similar fate. To try and stop this happening we have had discussions with The Post Office who have allowed us to reduce our opening hours to enable Jan to work elsewhere as a pharmacist and thus keep your local shop afloat. From Tuesday 3rd May the new opening hours for the shop and Post Office will be :
Monday: 08:30 - 13:00 and 13:30 - 18:00 Tuesday - Friday: 08:30 13:00 and Saturday 08:30 - 12:30 Later in the summer there will be further changes. A new Post Office and shop counter will be installed nearer the door to enable single handed operation. Light refreshments will be available in the back part of the shop which we hope will become a welcome and welcoming facility for the village and visitors. To make space for this we will be discontinuing some of our less popular items but we will still aim to provide a useful service. As soon as we have more details we will let you know, meanwhile we hope you will continue to support us during and after this period of change. Jan and Ian Maynard
LEGAL TALK With
Joanne Armer Solicitor
MEET YOUR NEW LOCAL SOLICITOR Now full time at our Grange Office Why pay a premium for a DIY service? I saw clients last week about an equity release they had already committed themselves to (shame - we have specialist advisers for those). They had also been advised by the equity release advisers to make Wills and Powers of Attorney (LPAs). But they had not understood what they had signed up for and had not realised that the fees for the LPAs would be deducted from the mortgage proceeds. And the fees were pretty steep. After the mortgage was completed, they received papers in the post including 4 LPA forms, 4 registration applications and 2 (should have been 4) fee remission applications, as well as Wills with guidance on how to sign them. Have you seen LPA forms? They are long and complicated and the witnessing requirements are odd in terms of who can sign them as your Witness and Certificate provider. I mean, it’s not rocket science but it is daunting to receive a pile of papers an inch thick with pink tabs all over showing you where to sign and with instructions on who can witness etc.
You can access these forms yourself on gov.uk. If you are good with paperwork, you can work your way through them and if you get them wrong, the OPG returns them. You will probably have to pay another £110 registration fee.
But if you pay someone full whack to do these for you, should they be sent to you in the post to sort yourself? I was happy to help these clients through the forms but they were out of date and could not be used, as they had been nervously sitting on them since they first got them. I called the company and asked if they would refund the fees, but they refused. They did agree to send a new set and I suggested our clients bring them in and I would whizz them though the signing and witnessing requirements, which are not difficult when you are used to doing it.
Who are the winners and losers? The company who posted the forms are the winners. They got paid up front, whether the forms are sent back or not. The clients have lost as they have been stressed and feel badly treated to by the ‘remote provider’. I suppose I have won as I have ended up with happy clients who will come to us for future work, promised to tell their friends and said I could write this article. If you want a proper, full, face to face service from someone local who is there when you need them, come to us. Don’t use remote or online providers however shiny they may look.
