Exciting times here at Grange Now as along with our sister papers in Ulverston and up in Windermere we are now reaching more homes in the South Lakes than any other local newspaper - about 50% more in fact. As Ulverston Now has increased coverage area to include Dalton, the 3 ‘nowmagasine sisters’ collectively account for 30,000 copies a month. Closer to home we are launching a new regular feature this month. ‘Looking back in time’ brings you a monthly collection of images from days gone by. Filling a shoebox is a simple and fun thing to do, and doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and it really does make a difference to a child who has none of the basics we take for granted. The benefits of being a “local” charity are that a team from Cumbria takes the shoeboxes and brings pictures and stories back of the children who receive them and, as a small charity we have no staff to pay, so

Education until age 18 is compulsory but help with travel costs is not

What would you do in an emergency? The Rotary Club of Grange over Sands is to hold a free course of instruction to cover the situation ‘What would you do in an emergency’?

Several parents have been in touch with Grange Now this month about the cost of travel for sixth formers. One parent, whose son is travelling to Ulverston Victoria High School, is currently having to fork out £100 per month to get him there, and it is a similar situation for those travelling to schools and colleges in Lancaster and Kendal. We contacted both Northern Rail and Cumbria County Council for their response. A Northern Rail spokesperson told Grange Now: “In order to keep a fair and unbiased approach to all schools and colleges across the north of England, it was decided to withdraw this particular educational season ticket offer. These tickets are a Northern product, meaning we reserve the right to amend or remove them at any time. This decision was reached on a basis that is both non-discriminatory, commercially viable and practical from a logistical point of view, across our entire Northern network.

The venue will be the Netherwood Hotel on Thursday 10 November between 9.30am and 12.30pm. The purpose of the event is to give advice on how you should react in the case of dealing with an emergency such as heart attack, choking, severe bleeding, electric shock, epileptic fit, diabetic coma, falls or fractures and would you offer the right treatment? Tuition will be provided by Grange and District First Responders. Those interested in attending should register their name, address and telephone number at the Netherwood Hotel Reception Desk or telephone 07533 054 216. If there is enough demand, a further afternoon session may be held.

Grange branch is delighted to be chosen by the Grange CO-OP to benefit from their new Local Community Fund. Every time a member uses their membership card when they pay for Co-op branded goods, 1% of what they spend will go towards their chosen cause. (21 September until 18 March 2017). Guidance and information is available on the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) website for anyone to access for themselves and NWAS expect potential volunteers to apply on line. Post-16 Transport Policy Statement – 2016 / 2017 Academic Year

Cumbria County Council sent their guidelines for Post 16 students which state: ‘Free transport will only be available….in the following circumstances: Qualifying Post-16 students from ‘low income’ families Qualifying Post-16 students who have a learning difficulty/disability’ While it is only right that ‘low income’ families should get help, it appears that so many families fall just outwith that threshold, and those are the families who are being squeezed, financially, the most.

As you are reading this, Robin’s Runners will have successfully completed the Great North Run, which took place on Sunday 11th September. This is the second of three runs in memory of Robin Webster, better known to many locals as simply “Sir”. Following Robin’s passing last year, his daughter, Claire Logan, was joined by Philippa Skrein, Bryony Wilmshurst, Emma Teggart and Steven Teggart and, as a team, they decided to run in his memory whilst raising money for three charities that helped Robin and his family greatly. Those charities being: North West Air Ambulance, Rosemere Cancer Care and St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston. Originally, just two runs were planned. Windermere Road residents secure multi-agency meeting

The residents of Windermere Road were once again hit by flooding during the torrential downpour on 28th August, which left Windermere Road, the duck pond and the car park behind The Commodore completely underwater. The flooding was due, in part, to a lack of maintenance in waterways and also blocked drains.

At the beginning of September, a ‘Clear the drains before it rains’ campaign was started by Windermere Councillor Ben Berry which has led to a multiagency meeting which will take place in Victoria Hall on Tuesday 4th October at 7pm. Windermere Road resident, Andrew Baxter welcomes the meeting saying: “This is a good first step. After the floods there was lots of positive messages on social media but we need the drains and gullies cleared and a plan in place. If we don’t get a solution then my neighbours and I will be flooded again and again.”

Attending the meeting will be Cumbria County Council Flood Risk Management Team, Environment Agency, Cumbria Highways and South Lakeland District Council. County Councillor, Bill Wearing who organised the meeting said: “I called this meeting because the problems are only getting worse and working together we can overcome them. Seeing the Sites On 5th September, twelve members of Grange’s ‘3Ps’ Group, along with Grange Town Councillors, County Cllr, Bill Wearing, District Cllr, Eric Morell and Alan Williamson of SLDC contractors, Continental Landscapes visited thirteen sites which the 3Ps have massively improved over the past 10 years. Chairman of the group, Cllr Ron Shapland told Grange Now: “These sites varied from woodland and gardens, to the Promenade and the Community Orchard. They looked at work including: clearing and re-planting of green spaces, seats which have been painted and litter bins. They group also went along to the very popular

outdoor gym which is sited at the cafe end of the prom and also viewed the new information boards which were also courtesy of the 3P’s group.” Over a period of ten years, the Group raised over £70,000 and provided at least £50,000 worth of volunteer time. Thanks must go to members of the 3Ps committee and to the local community. They have given their time to make a contribution towards, not just helping to improve and maintain Grange’s environment and attractions, but also by designing printing and distributing leaflets. Quite a feat for a band of volunteers and one for which, as residents of Grange, we should be very grateful.

Long lines of cars, each displaying a yellow parking ticket, could be seen all over Grange, mainly in the ‘one hour only’ parking bays. Does this mean Grange is full of petty criminals with no regard for the law or could they perhaps be hardworking locals who have jobs in our shops and cafes who, if they were to park in the car parks, would spend £25 of their wages, per week on parking. There are many who say there are plenty of places to park without using the parking bays, Fernleigh Road

for one. If there is one issue which Grange Now repeatedly hears about it’s from the poor residents of Fernleigh Road who cannot park outside their own houses because of people parking there. The parkers can’t win. Isn’t it time something was done for those who work locally? Any suggestions, please get in touch.

On 7th September, Steve Morris of The Cumbria Steam Gathering, attended the meeting of Lower Holker Parish Council to present them with a cheque for £500. The money has been put towards the cost of resurfacing Flookburgh Square which took place on Wednesday 14th September. The Cumbria Steam Gathering vehicles travel through the Square, to Cark Airfield, every year and they were delighted to make a contribution to the Parish Council plans to improve the Square.

New life for the parish hall Plans for a mix of business space, shopping and commercial development on the site of the Parish Hall have been submitted to SLDC planning department. The plans also include a business hub which would provide hot desking and flexible short term office space. The project would involve the demolition of the Parish Hall and its replacement with a three storey building intended for a variety of active economic uses. The developers suggest that over thirty jobs could be created if the scheme is approved by SLDC planning officers and committee. The Parish Hall was sold over a year ago due its decline in use. The plans have been submitted following a rejection by Historic England to list the building. Initially designed as a four storey building, the project has been amended to

reflect the existing rooflines in Kents Bank Road and will have three floors and a lift. The applicants have stated that where possible they will use and recycle existing materials, renewable technologies and utilise a local workforce to complete the works. The development should be great news for jobs and local opportunities and there is certainly a lot happening in that area of Grange. A slightly wider issue is parking. Tim’s Column It has been a bit of a health month when it comes to dealing with issues that people have been bringing me.

I am becoming increasingly worried about the state of our health service in South Lakes. We have some amazing people working in healthcare around here but there just isn’t enough money to allow them to do their jobs properly. A report came out the other week showing that our local health trusts have much higher levels of work absence because of illness than the average for all health trusts around the country. We all know that high levels of sickness often indicate deeper issues than simply the poor health of employees. Just because we choose to live in a rural area rather than a big city should not mean we face higher health risks than other people in the country.

I have written to Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, to ask him what his plans for reform to the NHS will mean for health care in our part of the world. A recent report calculated that our health care in North Lancashire and South Cumbria would be facing a deficit of more than £800 million by 2021 if nothing was done. That is a huge amount of money to find. There is no way it can be achieved simply by greater levels of efficiency. Either the Government comes up with more money or we will have to face massive cuts to our service. Later in the month saw Jackie and I at the Cumbria in Bloom Awards in Penrith where we were very proud to see the awarding of an ‘Outstanding Award’ to the Bloom Group for their entry of the Station Border into the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category. The group have already won a national award for the Garden of the Year at the Community Rail Awards for this garden so should be very proud of themselves.

Jim Walton Toyota Jim Walton (Penrith) Limited is a true family owned and run business which has been trading now for over 40 years, the business was started by Jim from humble beginnings in the small hamlet of Johnby some 7 miles from the market town of Penrith in the late 1960s selling used cars and vans to the local community from the family’s small farm. With the developments in Penrith town centre starting in early 2005 a new site was found on the Gilwilly Industrial Estate in the town and work began to extend and modernise

the existing building to accommodate new computer and phone systems as well as new state of the art MOT testing facilities. A brand new car preparation bay and wash area were also formed at the development. Marrow and Chorizo Bake Autumn is a season of deep greens, dark yellows and rich oranges and reds. Combining as it does the full flavour, colour and texture of Cumbrian chorizo with the gentler and often under-appreciated marrow, which is grown locally and delivered directly to the farm shop, this recipe from the Low Sizergh Barn kitchen pays homage to all that’s good about the coming season. After the energy of summer it’s lovely to slow the pace, get together round the family table, and tuck into a hearty and comforting dish.

Makes 1 large family dish Method

Ingredients 1 marrow (peeled, deseeded and cut into 1” cubes) 1 tbsp olive oil 1.5 pints of chicken stock 1 tsp dried oregano 2 cloves of garlic (crushed) 2 handfuls breadcrumbs 1 handful of parmesan cheese (grated) 250g lean back bacon (chopped) 1 Cumbrian chorizo (diced) 200g red lentils 1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes

1. Pre heat the oven to 180c. 2. Fry the bacon and garlic in olive oil for 5 minutes. Add the chorizo and oregano and cook for a further 5 minutes. 3. Add the marrow and lentils and cook for another 5 minutes before adding the tomatoes and stock and simmering for a further 10 minutes. 4. Pour into a casserole dish and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. 5. Remove the casserole from the oven and top with breadcrumbs, return the dish to the oven and bake for a further 10 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven and finish the topping by sprinkling the parmesan cheese over the casserole and baking for a final 10 minutes. 7. Serve with a small salad of Growing Well leaves, and granary bread.

A GOOD OL’ BRITISH PIE The British take their Pies very seriously! There are umpteen national Pie competitions held annually around the UK, and the World Pie Eating Championships takes place ever year in Wigan. It’s one of our favourite foods in Britain, and has been widely celebrated and, no doubt, consumed in the last two weeks as we celebrated British Food Fortnight.

We, at Higginsons are no different. Pies have been on the menu here for 30 years, starting out as an addition to the fresh meat offering. Since then, they have developed a rather large following, much to our delight and our Pie range now extends to over 40 varieties. Grange over Sands Golf club’s inaugural Sponsors’ Day was played on Sunday 4th September 2016, and proved to be a great success, with over 150 people attending.

October is the month of Halloween, and beyond fiddling around with pumpkins or chiselling out hard as granite turnips, (see, things were tough in the olden days) there’s still plenty to crack on with on your plot. If you have access to a greenhouse it’s worth lifting some herbs to prolong their availability, mint will do well and it’s worthwhile with thyme in case of a particularly brutal or very wet winter. I usually try and make a late sowing of parsley in pots for this purpose as well. You might read in a few books, or on the back of seed

One crop that I’ve had far better results with, seeming to be repellent to garden pests, as well as vampires, is garlic. A good variety to sow now is the cosmic sounding Thermidrome. You should get some optimistic little shoots before the winter, which in spring will transform into robust healthy plants.

I’m always tempted to save a couple of heads of garlic to sow again in the autumn. The perceived wisdom is that this can lead to a build up of disease but I’ve never had any problems, other than stopping myself from eating them!

A new book chronicling the red squirrel colony in Forest How, Eskdale is sure to capture the heart of everyone, not just those who love nature and animals. The book is about all of the squirrels but the undisputed star of the show has to be ‘Belinda’ who clearly loves the camera as much as it loves her.

The book’s author, Peter Trimming told Grange Now: “When I started studying the red squirrels, at Forest How, in 2012, I had no plans to write a book. However, I didn’t see the point of taking photographs without knowing which squirrels were appearing in the pictures. John Harris, co-owner at Forest

After several visits, it became obvious that I was compiling a nice photographic record of several squirrels; learning their ways, who would pose for me and who would run off if I approached etc. This continued until the summer of 2014, when squirrelpox struck. I always knew that this was a possible outcome, as the grey squirrel has been in Cumbria for more than 15 years. Over the course of two months, we lost all of our friendly red squirrels.

Visitors to Meathop Moss Nature Reserve near Witherslack are benefitting from 1,000 metres of newlyopened boardwalk which has just been installed at the reserve, thanks to a grant from SUEZ Communities Trust. The boardwalk will enable wildlife lovers to enjoy at close hand what is one of the best examples of raised peat bogs in the country. A variety of unusual plants can be found on the reserve, which is owned by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, including Sphagnum mosses, cotton grasses and bog rosemary. The habitat is also home to over 200 species of butterflies and moths. Meathop Moss Nature Reserve is free to enter and can be found off the A590 near Witherslack, on the road signposted to Ulpha.

How, with his partner Deb, had named one squirrel who visited regularly, and it seemed sensible to name the other ‘regulars’, so that we could easily refer to individuals sighted each day.

Vale of Lune Harriers cross the bay

On Monday 12th September, Queen’s Guide, Cedric Robinson OBE, led the Vale of Lune Harriers, including Master, Mel Brook, in a ride-out, across the bay. The group left Kents Bank Station end at 2pm for the 2 hour ride across to White Creek Caravan Park. Although very experienced riders, it was the first time riding across the bay for Tony Smith on Axel, Yvonne Shelley on Sam and Amanda and her daughter Sarah on Costa and Carina.

Improved facilities at Arnside Educational Institute An extension to the existing buildings was built to provide space for the Arnside Archive, as well as to provide additional storage space for equipment used in the Joyce Nicholson Hall by local residents. The local Link Library also recently moved into the building and is now fully operational there.

Local councillor, Ian Stewart was instrumental in getting funding from SLDC Locally Important Projects fund and Cumbria County Council, whilst Councillor Pete McSweeney has provided funds from the John Barnes Charitable Trust. A grant has also been received from The Hadfield Trust. South Lakes MP, Tim Farron performed the official opening on Saturday 10th September, alongside local councillors and residents.

Allithwaite Bowling Club raise £500 At their annual charity day barbecue in July, the Club raised £500 which will be split between Derian House and Jigsaw Children’s Hospices. This brings the total raised, over the last 7 years, to a whopping £3230. The Club would like to say a big thank you to Plumgarths for donating the sausages and burgers and to Hargans for donating the potatoes and onions. At the Open Competition, the main fundraiser for the year, Dave Gears from Carcraft

ART & MUSIC This month, Grange Now talks to former English teacher turned author, Jean Briggs.

Artist of the Month: Author, Jean Briggs gun that killed his enemy. Famous man, he may be, but as Hardacre observes, famous men are composed of passions just as ordinary men.

Where do you write? I live in Sedbergh in an old cottage overlooking the River Rawthey and work in a little office upstairs where my desk faces the wall rather than the view of the Howgills – otherwise I might be gazing out when I should be planning the next chapter. My husband and I bought the cottage as a holiday retreat because in term time we lived at Rossall School where I was Head of English. Before Rossall we lived in Hong Kong where I taught English and my husband, an artist, worked in publishing. Why Dickens? When I retired from teaching, I did wonder what I might do after such a busy life. I had written plays and short stories to use in school, but a novel? It was when I started reading Dickens again and came across a book about his founding, with Baroness Coutts, of a home for fallen women that the germ of the idea came. I read about his expeditions with the police into the London’s slums. What about a crime story? My detective duo, Dickens and Jones came

Describe your writing day? Sometimes I write straight onto the computer, but often I write in longhand. Sometimes the words flow more easily from a pen or pencil. I keep pen and paper by me at all times – just in case an idea comes. And I read Dickens’s novels and letters – I have to keep in touch with him. to life when I gave Dickens, a Superintendent from Bow Street as his partner. Matilda Richards of The History Press liked the idea of a series and accepted the first book. Dickens was very keen on acting – he was, by all accounts, a very good one. The third novel, Murder by Ghostlight, begins in Manchester in 1850. Dickens had acted there in 1848, but there was no murder done, as far as I know! However, I was tempted by the idea of the discovery of a corpse on the stage, and more, by the dramatic notion that Dickens finds it. The body is of a man Dickens loathes and this is a fact that interests Inspector Hardacre of the Manchester Police. Hardacre is even more suspicious because Charles Dickens is found holding the

unique and engaging original material, Ninebarrow also take a wide-range of traditional folk songs and rework them in their own, distinctive way. We were thrilled to see our very own Beth Holman’s design on the front cover of the 300th edition of Grange Now.

We have got off to a fabulous start to our new academic year! This term our value is ‘Friendship’ and the children have been showing excellent friendship qualities, with three children winning special certificates already! We spent the day at Castlehead Outdoor activity centre, working together to solve problems and strengthen our friendships. We welcomed 15 children to our Reception class this year and some new faces to our Nursery, and we couldn’t be more pleased. In the Snowy Owl’s class, we are learning about animals and are looking forward to a visit to Dalton Zoo. In Tawny Owl’s, we are learning about superheroes, designing outfits, complete with mask and cape, and the children are full of enthusiasm. Barn Owls have been taking their learning outside, writing Autumn poetry and making physical numbers, to explore place value,using all sorts of unusual objects. They are now looking forward to searching the quarry for ‘Stig of the Dump’. Will they find him? Eagle Owls have produced some outstanding persuasive writing inspired by the unusual book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. They are studying Maya and Space and are looking forward to an action packed Maya Day soon.

We were also delighted as our Year 6s arrived at Carlisle Cathedral for the Diocesan Leavers’ Service, to see Robert Wattam’s design in print on the service booklet. Lindale Primary We have had a wonderful start to the new school year. Over the summer, we had a lot of work done to create a new path and also installed a fantastic Playdale climbing frame and outside musical instruments. This was mainly funded by a successful lottery bid and in-school fundraising. We are delighted that we now have a great play area, and access to the woodland at the bottom of our field, all year round. All classes are now regularly using the outdoors for woodland skills,

nursery school, running from within our premises. Much work has taken place over the summer period; the nursery classroom and our Class 1 space have been transformed and are exciting, vibrant and busy places in which to learn. Our outdoor learning area is now well under development. The Storyteller and Reflective Garden is now in use, and our brand new Mud Kitchen has arrived and is ready to go into place during our ‘Groundforce Day’ on 17th September. We are also awaiting the arrival of a school boat to go in the

Flookburgh School The start of the new school year here at Flookburgh has already proved to be a busy and exciting one.

Grange CE School The start of the new school year is always exciting and, at Grange, everyone is enthusiastic and eager to start work.

On 16th September all the children enjoyed an adventure filled day at Castle Head Field Centre funded by the donation from Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust. Great fun was had by all and the children were able to take part in activities such as canoeing, raft building, climbing, low ropes etc and thankfully the weather was fantastic!

School continues to promote Fairtrade and we had a stall at Prom Art on the 25th September selling Fairtrade items from Nepal as well as displaying the children’s artwork. We hope that lots of people were able to pop down to see us. Our amazing felted life cycle of a butterfly was created with the help of Emma Wheatcroft.

We are delighted to have recently been re-accredited with the Eco Schools Green Flag award which is an international award programme, providing a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life.

There has been lots of work going on at school over the summer holidays with many improvements inside and out and it all looks fantastic.

The children were very excited to see our new play equipment had been installed and were keen to start climbing! The new sun sail will provide a covered area in the grounds for the children to learn outside and make use of our excellent outdoor areas.

Prom Pumpkin Walk

Last year, Tracy Hathorn from the Keg and Kitchen decided it would be fun to have a pumpkin walk along the prom and it proved to be a big hit. This year, Tracy is determined that this year’s walk will be even bigger and better than last year. Dear Editor I am very sad to report that one of our local residents has taken it upon himself to try and prevent bicycles travelling on the promenade, or just to cause trouble. On Thursday the 15th of September my neighbour and I were returning from a days cycling. We had travelled on the 15.33 train from Lancaster to Grange, the same train had been used by the man who had boarded at Carnforth. We were cycling slowly along the promenade in single file when we approached a lady and 2 men. We rang our bell in advance of reaching the people, the lady and one of the men used their common sense and moved to one side so that we could all pass safely.

But there are also plenty of websites that are busy late at night dispensing free advice that probably won’t fit your exact circumstances and which clearly state they take no responsibility for the advice given.

Cartmel Quakers - From silence, comes faith in action Silence has been used for centuries as a basis for quiet contemplation and spiritual renewal.

Having missed the last three issues of Grange Now partly due to holidays and then through unforeseen circumstances, I shall briefly summarise parish happenings. ‘The Gift’, the series of videos and talks led by Fr. Parker, concluded towards the end of June. It was well attended with up to 28 participants from the various churches in and around Grange. In August, Fr. Aleks along with 40 or so fellow travellers from parishes around Cumbria, flew to Krakow, where the late Pope John Paul ll was Bishop. A packed 10 day itinerary took in visits to Auschwitz, the Cathedral of the Black Madonna and many other sites of religious interest. During Fr. Aleks’ absence, it was nice to welcome Fr. Parker back for 10 days’ supply. The work being done on the gardens and field has certainly paid dividends with the award of a Silver Gilt Certificate from the Civic Society. Many thanks to all whose efforts have earned this, whether paid or voluntary. Talking of the gardens & field, readers may have noticed that we have erected signs asking people not to exercise their dogs on the field. Sadly,we have taken this action because a number of people have not been cleaning up after their pets and this has led to unpleasant incidents where children and machinery have become victims of the selfishness of these owners. Finally, please look in to admire the newly installed stained glass window following its transfer from the former St. Cuthbert’s Chapel in Flookburgh. Local craftsman, Stuart Bricklebank, has done an excellent job transferring the window and altering it to fit its new home.

For Quakers, this forms the framework for our worship, meeting together in silence so that we can still our minds and open our hearts and lives to God. From the stillness, comes clarity and vision; then we

Hope Church

At the end of August, 18 people linked to Hope Church Grange attended a four night event organised by Christ Central Churches.

Camping at Newark showground, we experienced some rain but this didn’t dampen spirits especially among our hardy Cumbrian band who entered the mini olympics event and were the only group to continue through the ‘downpour’. We were with other Church groups from around the world some as close as Kendal and some as far as Mexico

There to celebrate Jesus, we also had many seminars and talks available and felt God impacting our lives as well as hearing some amazing stories of answered prayer. It is good to be reminded we are in one great big family of all ages. We are back in Grange school from the 2nd October at 10.30am and on the first Sunday of each month thereafter. All welcome. It was with regret and sadness that we had to say ‘Good Bye’ to the Revd Nick Ash. Nick always supported Churches Together, and we will certainly miss him, his presence and his wisdom.

St Paul’s Grange Members of St Paul’s and the Fell Church were able to say their personal goodbyes to the Rev’d Nick Ash at a Parish Lunch held at the Grange Hotel recently and also at an informal service to celebrate his ministry. Members of the Cartmel Peninsula team attended this occasion along with others representing various local organisations and the church was full as people gathered together to wish Nick well for the future.

A table top sale is due to be held in Flookburgh Village Hall on Sunday 16th October and Sunday 30th October. On Saturday 10th September, the Grange branch of Cerebral Palsy Cumbria held a successful street collection in the town. £359.70 was raised to support local families living with cerebral palsy. Many thanks go to the members of Grange Rotary Club who helped, and to those who donated.

The Lakeland Trails Keswick trail race proved popular at the start of September with a new (muddier) course thanks to Storm Desmond altering the previous route. Tina Jackson placed 6th lady and John Douglas came in 10th in the V40M class. Up against Mo Farah in the Great North Run, Steve Wilson and Matthew Bacon came in with times of 1:57:30 and 1:45:35 respectively, with Matt raising over £200 for Motor Neurone Disease Association via www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Matthew-Bacon4. Grange & District Photographic Society

The club starts its new 2016-17 Programme on 10th October in the Methodist Church Hall, Kents Bank Road, at 7:30 pm. Simon Handley, operator of Skylark Aerial Photography, will show his equipment, and talk about and show examples, using the latest drone photography technology.

The following week, 17 October, features a Member’s Challenge photo competition, while on 24 October, Nick Witham of Wilkinson Cameras of Kendal, will let us know about the latest developments in cameras and equipment. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

The September meeting was very well attended and after a welcome by the President Jerusalem was sung with gusto. The financial report was given and Smartie tubes,an initiative to raise money for Denman College, were handed in.The County newsletter items were identified and members were encouraged to sign if interested. Details of proposed trips to Liverpool were highlighted and a five mile walk identified for the following week.The Charity Christmas coffee morning in November was discussed and members were asked to make craft and cake items for this event. Mary Stone, the speaker, spoke with energy and enthusiasm about Double Joy Children’s Home in Kenya.Her sincere involvement in the scheme provided the members with a real insight into the daily routine of the children and workers at the home as she oozed enthusiasm with every example given. Her handmade jewellery,cards and calligraphy items were on sale much of the proceeds of which were donated to Double Joy. After the vote of thanks given by Doreen tea and coffee was enjoyed by all. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 4th October, when the Rev Nigel McCullough will entertain us with some “right royal roles”.

Grange Ramblers

Tuesday 16th August : Six Ramblers went up The Calf from Sedbergh, passing by Winder, Arant Haw and Calders on the way. It was a glorious warm day with magnificent views of the Howgills at the top. During the descent, we visited the Arant Haw and ended back in Sedbergh for a cup of tea after about 6.5 hours of splendid walking. The walk had been rescheduled from the 28th July, due to previously unfavourable weather conditions. Leader Tony Harrison Friday 9th September, three walkers started on Brunt Knott and Potter Fell walk on a cloudy morning. There was several light showers but overall a dry day, lunch was taken on top of Brunt Knott mainly in the cloud but occasionally break with far view, the 7 and half mile walk with 1700 feet ascent was led by Ian Cornway.

Lower Holker WI

At our last meeting, ‘Fun making Jewellery’, Jenny Wheeler encouraged us to play with her extensive selection of beads etc. By feeling and arranging the beads on our beading trays we all made ourselves a necklace and a bracelet. Much fun and concentration with Jenny’s help went into the design, before the choice of fastening type to complete the necklace. If you would like to “have a go” at different things: craft, drama, quizzes etc., why not come along to Lower Holker WI? Since joining, I have taken

Cartmel Local History Society

A taste of Townend: Recreating recipes from 1699. The September lecture, by Emma Wright, House manager at Townend was centered on a recipe book, handwritten by Elizabeth Birkett. This contains culinary recipes, instructions for household tasks such as dying and removing stains, and cures for various ailments, such as nosebleeds, epilepsy, toothache, rickets. Elizabeth Birkett moved to Townend in 1703 when she married Ben Brown, the owner. She would have cooked mainly on open fires but she did have an oven, which would only be fired up about once per fortnight. The culinary recipes were mainly dishes for entertaining. Ordinary fare was dominated by clapbread, made from oats.

Emma described a number of culinary recipes, including stuffed pike, roast mutton, shred pie, venison pastie, spinach tart, and capon pie. Deserts included green pudding, little cakes (a bready bun with seeds), bean cakes (sugar and almonds), apricot paste (apricot and sugar boiled down to create jelly like sweets), ‘Mrs West’s cake’. Surprisingly, a wide range of unusual ingredients could be obtained from the village shop in the early 1700s. The evening ended with a tasting of sweetmeats made from one of the recipes.

Grange-over-Sands NSPCC

Despite the torrential rain on Saturday 20th August, supporters of the NSPCC turned out in force to enjoy “Tea in the West End”, which was held in the United Reformed Church Hall. Everyone enjoyed the musical entertainment and friendliness of the afternoon. Grange Over Sands NSPCC would like to thank everybody for coming and making it such a successful event, raising a total of £303.10. Our particular thanks go to Victor Hindle, Sue Harrison and Sylvia Trohear for their musical contribution and Margaret Northcott and Joyce Church. Margaret and Joyce come up with all the ideas for the August events and helped to organise the day. Our stalwart NSPCC supporters, Victor, Sue and Sylvia, have been busy these last two months and have raised a further £215 from two musical concerts they have given. We are indebted to them for helping this essential charity. Once again, thanks to all our supporters and we look forward to seeing you at our Christmas Coffee Morning on the 26th November in the United Reformed Church Hall.

The Club raised £330 at our recent street collection in aid of SSAFA,the charity that provides lifelong support for our Forces. On 7 September, President, Ron Carey, gave a fascinating talk on the life of Sir John Barrow, locally born Statesman and Writer, who is commemorated by the Hoad Monument overlooking Ulverston. On 10 November, the Club is holding an Emergency First Aid Course at the Netherwood Hotel which will be of great relevance to us all.It will cover the situation: What would you do in an Emergency? Grange and District First Responders will give advice on how to react if confronted by someone suffering a heart attack, stroke, choking, bleeding, diabetic coma, fainting, falls and fractures. As mentioned in the September edition of Grange Now, the society membership is now open to ladies. Our programmes are interesting and varied and the first one on 4th October is entitled: ‘Inspector Morse’s Oxford’ by Colin Milner. On 11th October, Dr Rob David will present Waiter, Miner, Butcher, Spy - a most intriguing title! On 18th October, Michael Fossey will be ‘Decoding Works of Art’. He will be taking a close look at Vermeer. This meeting will be at 14:00 hrs [2pm].

We usually meet at 10.15am prior to which tea and coffee are available. We meet at Abbot Hall Hotel in Kents Bank, Grange over Sands. Witherslack WI

There were 3 visitors at this month’s meeting, 2 of whom were from the USA! Members had very much enjoyed the ‘Walk around Kendal’ in July, followed by a meal at the Brewery. The bus trip to Barnard Castle in August was also enjoyed. A bowl of fruit was raffled as a start to the £10 challenge. Calendars and Diaries were on sale, also a calendar of Old Lindale produced by Sylvia Woodhead. The speaker was Professor Brian Wilson on “Postal History”. The study of this had opened up endless “windows” on social and national history down the centuries, starting with a Roman “letter” found on Hadrian`s Wall. Some of his finds were local and one took us to Tasmania. He has written several books on the subject which were on display. It was a fascinating talk. Grange Lecture Society

Strange planning Christmas events when we are in the middle of one of the hottest Septembers on record. ‘Boxes of Hope’ have once again approached the Lions for our assistance. Along with filling many shoe boxes with useful gifts for children who have very little, we also help to finance the heat and light for the storage facility in Barrow, prior to their despatch. Lions, Jim and Daphne Rhodes also help in the warehouse to sort and load the vehicle. When we see the excitement and anticipation of the recipient children it makes it makes it all worthwhile. Many people in the community get involved with this project from the churches and other clubs and societies. It can be quite a challenge, as well as good fun, working out how many items will fit in a shoe box. Our next social event will be our 37th Charter Lunch at the Grange Hotel. Can you believe that 37 years of serving the community. We will be joined by fellow Lions from all over the north west to help celebrate.

Grange & District Art Society

Our Autumn programme is well under way. Members meeting again after the long summer break, enjoyed catching up on each other’s views and ideas before settling to work on their individual pictures. Clive Wylie’s demonstration ‘Painting Seascapes in Oils’ proved a real highlight. Those attending expressed such interest and pleasure that they requested a return visit by the artist, for him to lead a workshop. At the time of going to press, the challenge of the month that is the Millennium Competition, has not yet taken place. (We will include the result in our society report next month.) On Monday 5th September, members and friends went to Blackpool and enjoyed the spectacular ‘Hot ice show’. The new session opened on 6th September with a Jacobs Join supper and a domino drive in our new venue - ‘The Father Magner room’ at the catholic church. We have a varied program arranged and new members will be welcomed. We look forward to seeing you.

Grange WI

Our creative members did exceptionally well at the County Show recently. Between them they scooped 44 awards – 19 golds, 20 silvers and 5 bronzes (red stars) – clearly the Rio effect has rippled out into Cumbria! Members will have a chance to see some of the award winning entries at our general meetings. A group of members went on a Treasure Hunt around Cartmel instead of our usual meeting in August. It proved to be an interesting night with several of us learning things we didn’t know about the village. Hope the vicar didn’t mind us trampling over graves to look for clues on some of the gravestones! In October, we will be holding our AGM and Zoe Daws

The opening lecture of the new season, entitled ‘Medieval Musical Instruments’, will be given on 11th October by solo historical musician Peter Bull. Dr Bull plays a variety of period instruments (dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, recorders, flute and lute among them) and he also sings. He has performed at such venues as the Tower of London, Hampton Court and various English Heritage and National Trust properties, including Sizergh Castle. Following this on 25th October Phil Holt, an air traffic controller for well over thirty years, will give what he describes as a humorous yet factual talk on air traffic control. The title of his lecture is ‘The Crowded Sky: experiences of an air traffic controller’. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

North Lonsdale Tennis Club

North Lonsdale Flukes (A) Team has kicked off The H&G Seed Veterans’ Winter League (Over 40’s) with 3 wins in 3 outings. The Flounders (B) Team, set up to give our growing membership more playtime, has faced stiff competition early on. The League now boasts 18 teams from as far away as Pilling (20 miles). Annabelle Cartmell Level 2 Tennis Coach, from Slyne, is teaching the basic skills to our bevy of beginners, and giving helpful hints to our intermediates on Thursday nights. Grange U3A activities get into full swing at this time of year. In September there was a Jazz Night at Carnforth Railway Station, the “Film Buffs” group resumed its screenings in the cinema room at the “Keg and Kitchen” and some members of the Cycling Group undertook a circular tour of Cumbria. Our Interest Group Leaders have their annual meeting on 5th October and everyone is invited to our “Drop In” coffee morning later that month. This will be held at the Methodist Church Hall from 10.00 am to noon on Tuesday 25th October. This is your chance to find out more about U3A. All are invited, members and prospective members, to come along for a chat and to meet one another, members of the committee and group co-ordinators over some light refreshments.

Grange Probus Club

On 12th September, Paul Duff gave a very interesting illustrated talk entitled ‘North Peru by Motorcycle’. This trip was nearly cancelled due to a major earthquake in the area but Paul and his wife were not to be deterred and flew to Lima and then on to the town of Cajamarca once the centre of Inca rule. They visited Inca tombs and the sacrificial stone where once the blood of victims was mingled with irrigation water. They encountered many obstacles including a collapsed bridge where local people helped by carrying their motorcycles over the damaged area. Aided by their local guide, Fran they visited a pre-Inca fortress which had been the home of a people known as the Cloud Warriors. They returned to the coast for some well earned relaxation before their flight home. PROBUS is a club for retired men and women of the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers.
