Letter from the Editor It’s a packed out issue this time. There does seem to be an awful lot going on. Of particular interest to many people will be the feature in this month’s edition, which is ‘Health in our Community’. It is particularly fitting that Catherine has put the health feature together in her final issue as she is going to work in a health related organisation. The health feature is comprehensive and a great effort, which I am sure will be interesting to most readers. We also take a look at holiday ideas well it is that time of year. Looking ahead, next month we will focus on Gardening (a perfect Spring time activity), and focus our area spotlight on Flookburgh. So come on Flookburgh, please get in touch. Welcome to Sharon Shepherd who joins us this month on the editorial side. I am delighted that Sharon has agreed to join us as she has a keen interest in writing and substantial local knowledge, as well as a proven track record in a number of local organisations and voluntary positions. Best of luck Sharon and just remember, you can always blame the Editor. Feedback on the new design, larger size and coated paper has by and large been positive. We have probably had over 50 comments (good and bad) and they are all appreciated. If you haven’t yet had a look at the website then please do so at www.grangenow.co.uk. Local news is updated pretty much every day on the latest news page. You are also welcome to have your say on any issue through our Facebook page and Twitter feed - links on the website, or indeed directly to us by email or phone. Life at Grange Now is full of surprises on an almost daily basis. For example I recently met Cath Holland, a local midwife who travels to Kenya to organise alternative rite of passage ceremonies for young Kenyan girls. I have also discovered that two of our readers travel each month to Barrow where they sit in a recording studio and read out the whole paper. They then post the recording to 40-50 blind and partially sighted residents in the area. A report will be in next month’s issue. Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers, Chris p.s. - next deadline is 21st March. Please get in touch.
FORTHCOMING FEATURES The April features will be on Gardening and we’ll focus a spotlight on Flookburgh. Next Deadline is the 21st March.
Grange Now’s green credentials Previous winners of Environmental Company of the Year, our new printer, Buxton Press produces 500 regular titles and prints more than 55 million magazines per year from their ultra-modern ecofriendly factory Environmental concerns are at the heart of Buxton’s business model. Paper is, of course, their biggest potential source of waste. Therefore all paper is responsibly sourced, certified to FSC and PEFC chain of custody standards. Paper is also bought in bulk to reduce the number of necessary deliveries to the factory, ensuring a smaller
2
carbon footprint. The paper is cut to the most cost-effective size and fed directly into the press thereby saving 300 tonnes of paper per annum. Buxton uses only vegetable based inks from renewable, naturally-occurring sources (soya oil, linseed and rosin) rather than non-sustainable mineral oil. Rather than disposable ink cartridges, these are delivered in 200 litre barrels from which the ink is drawn hydraulically. Thus only one barrel is necessary for all of the presses, thereby reducing overall ink consumption. The factory itself is a

wonder of sustainable design with myriad gadgets massively reducing the firm’s energy consumption. The press boasts a pneumatic waste paper collection system with central recovery and compaction which allows 100% waste paper recycling. Furthermore, the reverse thermal convection waste heat recovery system means central heating is a thing of the past; the building is now entirely heated by waste energy from the presses! Fortunately, SLDC is currently planning to broaden its recycling scheme to include plastic and cardboard collections.
Ten years of Prom Art Grange Festival of Arts is to celebrate ten years of operating the largest open air art and craft fair in Cumbria with an indoor launch of the 2014 Prom Art season on Sunday 30th March at the scenic Cumbria Grand Hotel in Grange-over-Sands.
Prom Art is a popular attraction on the last Sunday of the month from April through to September, offering opportunities for new and established artists and designer makers to exhibit their work to the general public. The launch event will bring a sense of the Prom indoors, with stalls arranged in and around the beautiful Victorian ballroom. New Chair, Peter Nightingale, says: “We are proud to work in partnership with the Cumbria Grand Hotel to launch Prom Art 2014 on Mothers Day. This large hotel has a special ambience that we feel matches well with the artistic vibe of
Prom Art, and we look forward to a fruitful collaboration.” Mark Ridley, manager at the Cumbria Grand Hotel says: “With our vast exhibition space in the ballroom, the initial idea of providing an alternative venue was thought up by regular Prom Art visitor and Cumbria Grand Reception Manager, Rachael Bird. We are delighted to welcome them to the Cumbria Grand and look forward to a busy day on Mothering Sunday welcoming both locals and tourists to the event.” More information is available at www.promart.info
Network Rail says no! Unfortunately Network Rail hasn’t forgotten that Grange Town Council voted against closing the public right of way pedestrian crossing at Bailey Lane. Now the plans and specifications submitted to Network Rail in November for public art in Grange devised by local groups has not gained approval. This will disappoint the groups who have worked hard devising artworks, planning sites and getting estimates for the work to be carried out. Following a meeting requested by Grange Town Council with SLDC and Network Rail, Network Rail are adamant no
art work using grant money can take place until Bailey Lane crossing is closed. For this to happen Network Rail need the approval of Cumbrian County Council and, because this has not been forthcoming, Network Rail are taking their application to the secretary of state. The process is likely to be lengthy and the outcome will decide whether the pedestrian crossing is closed or not or the art work installation ever be approved. Grange Now has learnt the grant money will be transferred back to SLDC. It is to be hoped ring fenced for Grange at some future date.
Lido reborn or Prom repair? an investment requirement of over £7million pounds for one of the lido development options. With ongoing running costs to add on top, is this really the road to take and in any way realistic?
A recent press release sent to Grange Now from South Lakeland District Council on February 11th seemed to show a continued enthusiasm for the ‘Lido project’.
Fabulous news but is it what is truly needed. Perhaps more pressing would be to repair the promenade. Photographic evidence seen by Grange Now shows deterioration over recent years. The last few weeks of horrendous weather across the country has certainly not helped. So perhaps local residents should be asking for priority to be given to the future of the promenade? Grange is a tourist town and the promenade, with all the facilities adjacent, are a crucial part of the Grange tourist offering.
At the February town council meeting, councillors expressed concern at the damage to the promenade and the apparent lack of concern from S.L.D.C. In particular reference was made to broken stanchions, corrosion of the promenade and slipway and sections of railings broken and unrepaired. Furthermore, questions were asked about the possible effect on Prom Art and other summer activities if the promenade is in poor shape, both from a health and safety and an aesthetic stance. Promises have been made to groups like Prom Art and the
3Ps, but what is needed now is action. The promenade is a fundamental icon of Grange and underpins the fresh air, bygone times and peaceful relaxation that define the experience of both visiting and living in Grange. So what of the Lido? Maintenance is clearly needed to at least improve the cosmetic appearance of what is there now. Some outside improvement would surely reduce the ‘eyesore’. But the recent consultation exercise indicated
Grange Youth Prom Project The committee, consisting of chair person Liz Cornford; secretary, Clare Bell; treasurer, Mark Hadwin; County Councillor Bill Wearing; PCSO Howard Firth and Judith Shapland was set up in 2003 to look into the development of a recreation area for young people. The project identified the area on the Promenade of the redundant tennis courts and the ‘donkey field’ as being a suitable site. The work started in 2005 and since then we have raised over £78,000 which has been donated to Grange Town Council for the purchase of the equipment! This includes the I.Play, table tennis table, the shelter, skate park, kickabout area and the 9 hole crazy golf course. The committee was approached in 2013 by the Town Council to run the
Grange Now understands that, in 2008, Heritage Lottery advised locals to tackle the promenade first as there was more chance of getting funding. No business plan would be needed as there is no on-going investment and the total cost would be lower. As the promenade is taking a relentless pounding from the elements, the problem will not go away. A lido without a promenade is not progress. Of course a restored lido would be a wonderful thing but clarity of vision and positive action is needed. However, as we go to print, things have taken a turn for the better. As the picture above shows, Grange Now is happy to report that work has begun on the Prom railings.

whole of the Recreation Area which includes the tennis court, bowling green, putting green and crazy golf course. So, after much discussion, we have decided to take on the day to day operations of the site for two years starting in April when it will be open 7 days a week until the end of September. The committee is very grateful for the help and support from the Promenade
Cafe and the Grange Now office who will be selling Day and Season tickets (more details in the next issue). We will be operating the site with volunteers so the money can be re-invested in a new low maintenance crazy golf course. Investment Matters By Jason Crane DipPFS AIFP
Whilst we all should have an ‘end of tax year checklist’, the tax breaks on offer to each of us are often left unused and therefore lost. Maximising the returns, be it growth, income or a combination of the two, from savings and investments is not only about selecting the best performing funds or the savings account paying the highest rate of interest; it is equally as important to ensure that they remain as tax efficient as possible so more of the return is retained by you. It is difficult to cover all the tax saving opportunities within an article such as this; the following are two common, and perhaps straightforward, options. An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is an ideal way to invest; any tax paid on interest can be reclaimed within an ISA and capital growth is free of capital gains tax. Up to £11,520 per individual can be placed in an ISA this tax year (no more than half of the allowance can go into cash with the balance into an Investment ISA); this limit increases to £11,880 from 6th April 2014. As the tax year end is only just over a month away (from date of publication) this means that you can shelter up to £23,400 from taxation within the space of six weeks; indeed a couple between them could shelter up to £46,800. Every year you can take a gain on an investment without paying tax on the realised gain; this is one particular allowance that is often overlooked, and therefore lost. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is only charged when gains exceed your annual allowance, currently
£10,900 per individual; capital gains (growth rather than income) is therefore free of tax up to this level. Multiple allowances can be used for jointly held assets, allowing further gains to be made tax free. Any realised gain in excess of this is taxed at 18%, or 28% for those that exceed the basic rate tax band (capital gains in excess of the annual allowance are added to other income). Careful year on year tax planning can ensure tax on gains are minimised or preferably avoided altogether. As already noted, CGT planning can be doubly effective for jointly held assets. ISA’s and the use of annual CGT allowances are only two of the many ways to save tax, and thus increase returns year on year. Making subtle changes to your investments and savings each tax year can make a huge difference to the growth of your investment or the level of income you receive. An investment should never be made simply from a tax position; however, making the most of tax allowances coupled with successful investment planning will compound returns year on year. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Grange and District Action Group Planning Application SL/2013/0691 – Berry Bank / Russell Armer Homes Ltd As most residents of Grange will by now be aware, the Planning Committee hearing took place in public at the Victoria Hall on 19th December and this proposed development of 42 houses (14 affordable, all bunched together – improper layout within SLDC) was the subject of nearly 30 wellcouched objections from concerned residents, professional consultants and clearly-stated commentary in writing from miscellaneous public bodies, including Network Rail. The tenor of the meeting, although emotional, was by and large conducted with good grace – despite many Kents Bank residents being at risk of having their privacy very seriously compromised. It was evident that the depth and breadth of objections – covering such critical matters as dangerous access, much-criticised drainage design, site layout, loss of amenity, lack of appropriate infrastructure (roads, access to schools, footpaths, cycle-ways, shopping facilities and more), and a failure to follow many of the strictures within the Planning Inspectorate’s recent report regarding developers’ compliance with SLDC’s Core Strategy and/ or The National Planning Policy Framework (the law) – were well understood by the Planning Committee. Five of the twelve members indicated their intention to vote ‘against’ the Planning Officer’s recommendation that the application be passed. Once this became clear, other members of the Committee decided to recommend that the matter be deferred until further data regarding drainage and site access was forthcoming from the developers. Ostensibly, this gave folk on both sides of the argument time to take a breather; time to reassess. But in reality it was a Trojan Horse. The deferral hearing is now imminent, on 27th February, in the sanctity of the Cabinet Room of Kendal Town Hall, where the tone of the previous meeting will be avoided. While the developers have made some slight
amendments to their drainage plans, these are still considered unrealistic by our independent consultants. Meanwhile, a traffic flow and speed survey has been conducted on Allithwaite Rd., at the top of Risedale Hill, producing results which are at odds with the splay (sightlines) and site access as it stands. In addition, our other consultants find that although there have been cosmetic variations to the layout and design of the site itself, it continues to defy best practice and remains at odds with the Core Strategy and the NPPF – both factors which underpinned the Planning Inspector’s ‘soundness’ decisions. But objectors are now out of time, and are restricted in their abilities to make further points. Had the original application been refused, the developers may (or not) have appealed. That is a risk which a cash-strapped District Council cannot entertain, and it is used, subliminally, by developers; an unspoken threat. This is a nationwide ploy. At deferral, it is impossible for the arguments put forward so cogently at the first hearing to be aired again – they have been heard, and noted; but perhaps not recalled by the Committee some weeks later. Finally, there is an inequitable law, still in force and working very well for the coalition, that Objectors have no right of Appeal, whereas developers do. That is clearly the roughest of justice. Grange Town Council has also put forward many serious objections. GADAG has been wonderfully supported by its members, particularly in terms of finance, enabling our three different consultants to produce evidence in spades. But SLDC, in their scramble to over-run the Peninsula with Lego, are both deaf and blind. When you read this, in all probability the matter will have been decided. A thumbs-up for Russell Armer will be a thumbs-down for the future of this community. Peter Nightingale, GADAG Secretary – 07751 087 292 or e-mail – gos.housing.kbr@gmail.com
Royal British Legion Planning application Grange Now has learned that Kents Bank Assets, the company who have made the planning application for the Royal British Legion, have submitted revised plans with a reduced scheme that proposes a smaller extension and omits the residential apartment that the initial proposals contained. The company offered to be at the property on 25th February
between 10am and 12 noon to answer any questions from local residents. Frustratingly for Grange Now we cannot widely publicise this opportunity as the paper is not delivered until after the 25th February. Grange Now will be at the meeting and provide a report which can be seen at www.grangenow.co.uk
Gardening week is a growing success
The week, which is the result of a partnership between South Lakeland District Council, Continental Landscapes, Grange Town Council, community groups and volunteers, aimed to make improvements to Grange’s various gardens, which date back to the 1870s. First to be tackled, on Monday and Tuesday, were the historic ornamental gardens, with Wednesday and Thursday seeing staff and volunteers getting to work on the prom and finishing off on Friday 14th with the Station Circle at Crown Hill.
Grange Community Gardening Week, 10th – 14th February, was a weeklong gardening bonanza with various works taking place to spruce up the historic gardens of Grange.
One Way System follow up Following our suggestion last month that a one way for Kents Bank Road could possibly be resurrected, we have received correspondence on the subject (see letters page). We also delved into
the archives on Grange Now to see how the proposal was received last time round. It was highlighted in a draft Town/Parish Plan for Grange dated 2006 (this was a revision of the plan first compiled by Grange Town Council in 1982!). Grange Now has lost count of the number of plans compiled by GTC, SLDC, or specialist firms over the years on the subject of Grange. The time, effort and costs involved must be substantial, a pity therefore that none got off
renowned architect Edward Paley. Interestingly, the gardens were also designed as a flood relief system; the level of the ornamental pond rises and falls depending on the weather.
The Ornamental Gardens and pond, originally laid out by the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway, are home to a population of exotic shrubs, trees and rare wildfowl from around the globe. It is one of the earliest and most complete railway gardens in Britain and the attraction was created to give a striking vista from the Grange Hotel, designed by the
the drawing board. ‘Traffic Management’ was the title of one section of the draft plan. It stated, rather obviously, that Grange had only one thoroughfare for half of the town (Main Street) causing problems. It is a shame, therefore, that the suggestion for a by-pass of Main Street, via Yewbarrow, was not taken up; the cost back in the 1980s was a lot less than it would be today. The suggestion for a one way along Kents Bank Road
The relatively good condition of the gardens today has largely been down to the significant partnership work between the Three Parks group, Grange Town Council and SLDC.
did not receive much favour, saying that it would increase vehicle speeds (note that GN’s suggestion of chicanes would deter this), although it was agreed more parking spaces would be created. The main problem seemed to be that vehicles would be tempted to use Fernhill Road/ Fell Drive as a rat-run to access Grange Fell Road for cars coming up Main Street along The Esplanade, rather than returning along Kents Bank Road to Grange Fell
Road - although traffic calming on Fernhill Road/Fell Drive could deter this. Another option in the 2006 plan was to pedestrianise the top end of Main Street, from GN’s office to the Spar but this would mean losing 11 parking spaces on this part of Main Street, creating problems for disabled drivers and businesses. After 7 years, still no progress. Maybe now is the time for action?

Magna Carta 800 year celebrations In 2015 it will be 800 years since Magna Carta was agreed between King John and his Barons, so enshrining the democratic rule of Law in English Society and limiting authoritarian rule. The original Charter was sealed by King John on 15th June 1215 and was revised several times over the next 100 years. To commemorate this 800th anniversary, ten Charter Towns (those with a strong Magna Carta Link) across England will be hosting events, joined by hundreds of other smaller sites across the country.
Visitor Trails – each with a distinct Magna Carta focus – will be suggested which can fit in with various time frames and combined into longer trails. In this way Magna Carta and its links can be brought alive in the 21st Century across the country. The National Magna
Carta Tourist Sub-Committee is suggesting that Durham, York and Cartmel form a focus for visits in the North of England. The Priory Church of St Mary and St Michael (Cartmel Priory) was founded in 1189 by William the Marshal, one time tutor to King John and his brothers, and the leading mediator between Magna Carta Barons and King. William Marshal became Lord Regent of England during Henry III’s childhood and was central to the Review of Magna Carta in 1217. Also suggested as a related spot to visit, is Brougham Hall near Penrith, which holds papers belonging to Henry Brougham, Lord Chancellor of England in the 1830’s, the man who introduced the second most important piece of legislation in English history – The Great Reform Bill of 1832. £24 million council cutbacks to go ahead At a turbulent council meeting on 13th February, almost £25 million of council cut backs were ‘rubber stamped’ by Cumbria County Council. The contentious measures include ‘£25 a year on street parking charges for residents’, cuts to bus subsidies on 70 services from April 2015 and an end to bus fare help for 16-19 year olds who become new students from September 2014. It is not yet clear how these measures will affect Cartmel,
Grange, Flookburgh and surrounding villages, but some impact is inevitable.
Although the council is not planning to increase their take from the council tax, there will be a range of measures implemented that directly affect local communities. For example the council seeks to recoup the £3.7m it spends on 44,000 streetlights. There is sadly worse to come as the council will seek to make

Time to cycle or walk the viaduct? With news that local charity The Morecambe Bay Partnership have secured £3.5m external funding and intend to create the Bay Cycle Way, perhaps the time has finally come to realise the dream of a cycle and walking connection from Arnside to Grange.

some safety fencing and connecting paths at either end is achievable? The towns are only separated by a 4 mile gap but a 20 mile drive is required to make the same journey. The crossing by rail has been in place since Victorian times and was traditionally walked by locals on Christmas day. The campaign for the crossing was started by ATOG - the Arnside to Grange Support Group with the aim of creating the walk and cycleway across the viaduct for the benefit of all. The creation of the walk/ cycleway would be the talk of the area and a real boost to tourism.

The Bay Cycle Way will be a fabulous, mostly level 200km long route from Walney Island, beyond Barrow, to Glasson Dock, south of Lancaster. We already have the famous Walney to Wear bike route passing through Grange - in fact it goes right past the door of the Grange Now office. How fabulous then would it be to see the new Bay Cycle Way finally open up the connection across the viaduct from Arnside to Grange. As the photograph shows, the potential for a path may already be in place as there is a path adjacent to the line. Surely

County Matters
I would like to thank all the residents who contacted me to compliment our County Highways staff on the excellent work they have done in re-surfacing the footways on Kents Bank Road and The Esplanade. I have passed on these remarks to our Highways Team, which included the understanding and willingness to accommodate and facilitate the business community of the Town. The County Budget
has been passed with no increase in Council Tax again this year. Unfortunately the ruling Lib/Lab Administration have pushed through the bus subsidy cuts and on-street parking charges against strong
Conservative opposition This will mean the 532 bus which runs around the Cartmel Peninsula is under threat. I will be working with County officers and the bus operator to see if some form of service can be maintained. This is a well used service having over 33,000 passengers a year but it still has a subsidy of over £45,000 a year. The frequency of the service may be adjustable to make it more
commercially viable. On street parking charges will be implemented later this year in the larger towns in the County. I am hoping we can hang out until the next County elections so we can put a stop to these charges coming into our smaller towns by electing a Conservative Council to run Cumbria. Regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor, Grange Division
MP calls on commissioners to support new unit One of the difficulties in bringing radiotherapy services to the South Lakes has been the rigid funding formula for smaller radiotherapy units; the ‘national standard tariff’ being too low to cover the costs at smaller units. However Tim has been lobbying ministers and was successful in making them change their minds. The bid is now at the mercy of national NHS commissioners, with a plea from Tim for a decision to be reached as
soon as possible. He has also made contact with specialist commissioners in charge of national cancer policy to encourage them to look at the bid. Support for the unit is strong, with thousands of local people signing a petition to bring the service to WGH. This follows a previous successful campaign by local residents in partnership with Tim to bring onsite chemotherapy services to the hospital. Mr Farron said: “According
Deputy Mayor’s Report It has been a fairly quiet time for Mayoral duties over the past month. However I was delighted to be asked to accompany Jackie Bailey, widow of our late Mayor, Councillor Norman Bailey, to the Hospice to present them with a cheque for £600 which was raised under the auspices of the Mayor’s Charity over the past year.
to the government’s cancer reform strategy, no cancer patient should live more than 45 minutes from the nearest cancer treatment unit - but in South Cumbria, no one lives within 45 minutes of our nearest unit at Preston. Hundreds of local people are forced to travel unbearable distances for vital radiotherapy. Having won our campaign to get chemotherapy to Kendal, we now stand an even greater chance of winning radiotherapy too.”
This occurred in conjunction with the Grange Chamber of Trade and St Paul’s Church. So, on a rainy and blustery February day, we, along with Peter Endsor (President of the Grange Chamber of Trade) and Christine Harrison (Church Warden at St Paul’s Church), arrived at the Hospice clutching a giant cheque. I understand from Mrs Bailey that there will be a further substantial cheque for the Hospice representing monies raised at Councillor Bailey’s funeral. At a later date there will also be a donation to Bay Search and Rescue raised as part of the Mayor’s Charity. Some key points from the February Council Meeting
Boxes of Hope broadens horizons Successful Grange-based charity, Boxes of Hope Cumbria, who collect Christmas shoeboxes for disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe, have recently expanded their operation. Boxes of Hope told Grange Now that the Christmas shoebox appeal remains their number one priority, but their recent trip to Romania highlighted the need for further involvement, including
a summer camp for 40 children and running a child sponsorship scheme. The local volunteers, who work tirelessly every festive season to bring a smile to the faces of over 8,000 children, have now dedicated themselves to provide them with a good education, thanks to a child sponsorship project backed by the president of Romania’s People to People charity, Nicu Gal.
Boxes of Hope spokesperson, Rosemary Webster said: “He wanted to personally thank all those who had helped with the shoebox campaign. We also launched our child sponsorship project in partnership with People to People.” After travelling to Romania to complete the shoebox delivery this past Christmas, the group witnessed the transformative power
The ongoing work on the TIC room is going well and we will soon have a refurbished Information Centre as well as, very importantly, accessible Council Offices. After a great deal of research and discussion, the Town Council Website is being revamped and will be going ‘Live’ in the near future. Due to the recent, sad death of Councillor Bailey a vacancy for a Councillor to join Grange Town Council, was posted on February 11th 2014. The next Councillor surgery will be held on Thursday March 20th from 1pm – 3pm at the Victoria Hall. Tim’s Column I must say I was impressed by the last edition of Grange Now. The new regime seem to be building on the great work put in by Mary Ann and her team over the years and taking the magazine forward in some really exciting ways. I am sure that you appreciate how lucky you are to have a high quality publication like this, keeping local residents informed of what is going on locally, delivered door to door in what is quite a rural area. Last month we had the release of the latest employment figures. You may be surprised to learn that South Lakeland has one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the country. In fact on some measures we have the 4th lowest levels of unemployment in the country, which is great. However, our issues in this part of the world are not the numbers of people in jobs but the level of pay they receive for those jobs. With our house prices as high as almost any place in the North West of England and yet with average salaries only 4th highest in Cumbria we need to work to attract more better paid jobs to the area. We are lucky in having some employers in the area who are moving forward in ways that need highly skilled, well paid workforces. Companies like Croppers and Gilkes in Kendal and, over in this part of South Lakeland, BAE Systems and, in particular, GSK with their exciting new investments in Ulverston. In many ways Grange is better positioned than much of the rest of the constituency to benefit from these opportunities. I was pleased to be invited along to a showcase for companies like these organised by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership in Westminster the other day and particularly pleased that Vince Cable sent so many ministers along to attend. It is amazing to realise that a quarter of the jobs in Cumbria lie in what is called the advanced manufacturing sector. As you would expect when you find me in a situation with easy access to a number of ministers I took full advantage to highlight the need for investment in our infrastructure. Michael Fallon, the Business Minister, got most of my attention. For manufacturing, in particular, to continue to grow businesses need to be able to move their goods around easily and efficiently. That means we need good roads in the right places and for all of our major train lines to be electrified. In particular we need funding for a Northern relief road around Kendal and, most importantly, for the businesses over on this side of the constituency we need investment in electrification of the Furness line. I was really pleased with the response that I received from the minister to this request. Obviously not a commitment to go ahead - he is a Government minister after all - they never commit just like that, but a positive acknowledgement that something needs to be done, not just for Cumbria but because of the roles that these businesses can play in the growth of the whole of country. This is something that I will keep pushing on until we start to see significant action, and even then I will need to keep up the pressure.

St Vincent de Paul Society recognised by Prime Minister
Grange Golf Club green keeper on course for Gleneagles
David Cameron has named the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) as a recipient of a Big Society award for their work supporting people across England and Wales. The SVP operates on a one-to-one basis caring for people who are lonely or in need of practical assistance. Its 10,000 strong volunteer base provide emotional support by befriending people in need and practical support by delivering food parcels, clothes and furniture. Last year, SVP volunteers made half a million visits to nearly 90,000 people in England and Wales. Support was given to older people; those who were housebound, in hospital or residential care settings; to travellers, homeless people and
refugees; and to people with mental health disorders. In Grange SVP volunteers selflessly give up their time to visit the sick and housebound, providing transport for hospital visits and other purposes, and generally giving a helping hand wherever needed. David Cameron said: “The SVP turns concern into action. The Society’s incredible number of volunteers build on a 200 year history of lending a practical hand to support those in need.” For more information on the society, visit their website: www.svp.org.uk

Two national societies – the Alpine Garden Society and Scottish Rock Garden Club - are working together to bring a new show to Kendal on 15th March. With exhibitors from across the UK, come prepared to be amazed by the quality and inspired by the colour.

You are inside the ropes working within touching distance of some of the best players in the world; it’s brilliant.” “[The Ryder Cup] is probably the pinnacle as far as golf goes so to be involved in that would be fantastic and certainly a career highlight”. “A list is currently being compiled by the host club
Rob began his career in the late 90s at Hawkstone Park Golf Course in Shropshire and has since worked and studied his way up the ranks. His first course management position began at Grange Golf Club three years ago and much progress has been made. “The feedback we’re getting from people who haven’t been to the club for a few years is they’re impressed – some have said it is almost unrecognisable,” he said. “We have done huge renovation works on the greens with no need for temporary greens any longer. We’re doing a lot and moving the whole place forward.”
First World War and the Cartmel Peninsula Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society wants to record information about Cartmel Peninsula and the First World War as we are not aware of any published record. Recently we became aware that about 250 Belgians were housed in the Grange area by February 1915. An article in the Times dated 8th February 1915 records that Vickers of Barrow was employing Belgian refugees who had fled the German invasion of their country in August 1914. Because of the shortage of houses in Barrow the workers were placed throughout the area. In Grange some accommodation usually taken up by visitors in the summer months were used and a workmen’s
train from Grange, Kents Bank and Cark transported them to Barrow every day. Does anyone have any information about which properties were occupied by the Belgians? In March 1915 a club was opened in Grange for the Belgian workers and their families. Can anyone tell us where the club was? A military hospital was established at Eggerslack in 1916. Does anyone have any information about this establishment? Do you have any family stories about life in the area during the war period? Please contact Pat Rowland on 015395 32234.

One reason Grange Now is highlighting this issue is because we have a resident midwife in our midst, Cath Holland, who is fighting this barbaric indignity by educating women in Africa and is soon to visit the continent again to continue her mission. Grange Soroptimists are also supporting her work; one way is by making bracelets for women to wear who have said NO to FGM. As FGM is often a ‘rite of passage’ ceremony for young girls, by having a symbol to wear stating they have not succumbed to the ritual, demonstrates to others there is an alternative. Cath explained to Grange Now that by a ‘Wearing the Bracelet’ ceremony creates an alternative ‘rite of passage’ for girls who would otherwise have to endure the barbaric practice. Unfortunately political correctness and cultural sensitivity can prevent this problem being abolished totally. Horrifically the practice is also alleged to be carried out in the UK in some ethnic communities. We have no mandatory training in FGM for health professionals and no statutory duty for a midwife to record that a new born baby girl has a mother who has suffered FGM. In France this fact is recorded and the baby girl is therefore deemed to be ‘at risk’. FGM must be stopped in the UK and elsewhere and we wish Cath
every success in her endeavours. She has promised to keep us informed of her work. In western Africa tribal beliefs are said to state that a man in contact with a woman who has not been subjected to FGM will die. NEWS UPDATE FROM GRANGE MIDWIFE CATH HOLLAND I returned from Kenya just before Xmas following a most successful visit. We at Beyond FGM together with our Kenyan counterparts Kepsteno Rotwo (abandon the knife) held our 4th Alternative Rite of Passage ceremony in the village of ORTUM in central Pokot, north west Kenya. We also held our 1st Alternative ceremony in a new more remote village, Lomut, where we were welcomed with open arms. The people there were most grateful that we had come with the knowledge, education and an alternative way to encourage abandonment of this brutal practice. This brings the no of girls who have refused FGM to around 1000! Judging by the marvellous reception we got in Lomut we are confident of success as we expand our programme to new areas. It would appear that people are eager and ready for change and we are happy to play a part in bringing about the end of female genital mutilation.

Health in our Community...
As residents of Grange and the surrounding area we are lucky that, despite our rural surrounds, we have excellent private and public health care provision on our doorstep.
From primary NHS services, including dentist and doctor’s surgeries, to more specialist private practitioners; from residential care for the elderly to community groups and charities providing advice, information and support. Grange and the surrounding area has everything you need to address those pesky aches and pains, improve your general wellbeing or to provide longer-term support as you move into the later stages of your life. Grange Now’s ‘Health in our Community’ feature aims to provide an overview of the available services and a little more information about what’s available for to you. Perhaps you’ll be spurred on to address a long-standing niggle, or discover a service you never even knew existed. We’ll also be bringing news of the new Grange Health Centre, set to open this month.
Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is based on the principle that each of us functions as a whole. To effect change, one must learn to consciously prevent unwanted, unnecessary and harmful muscular tension and effort. Because these tensions and misplaced efforts happen repeatedly through our everyday life and hence become unconscious habits, part of the learning process is to become aware of what it is that we are actually doing. Alexander Technique work deals with the “background” muscle holding patterns. These patterns are the ways you hold yourself most of the time and usually don’t notice any more. You take these holding patterns into everything you do. You take them to bed, wake up with them; take them into work, into relaxation and into exercise.

The key to the learning lies in the relationship between head and neck, and of the head and neck to the back. Once a good head/ neck/back relationship is restored, balance and ease of movement flow from this. Michael Hardwicke has been teaching the Alexander Technique in the Grange-over-Sands community area for over twenty five years with group classes and individual lessons. Very soon you will be able to spot green and white signs in various locations in the town and surrounding villages. The signs indicate the location of the defibrillators that we have installed as part of the community defibrillation scheme which runs in addition to the work undertaken by our first responders. In total there are 16 defibrillators available for use by lay people to help a resident or visitor who may be suffering a cardiac arrest. The purpose of this scheme is to enable people who are not medically trained to be able to provide immediate assistance in an emergency until the arrival of professional medical personnel. In the December issue of Grange Now I reported that the Grange and District team of responders had attended 388 calls during the 12 months up to the end of October; which should be more than adequate evidence of the necessity of this project. The North West Ambulance Trust control room staff know where each public access defibrillator is located, and when necessary will advise members of the public who ring 999 for

Endometriosis
Would you like to meet up with other women diagnosed with endometriosis? There are currently no formal support groups in Cumbria or North Lancashire for women specifically diagnosed with endometriosis. I am therefore wondering if anybody else would like to meet up on an informal basis ‘over a cup of tea’ once every other month or so? If you’re interested please text or ring Kerstin on 0781 867 2300.
The Hospice Neighbours
The Hospice Neighbours scheme has quickly developed to serve South Lakeland. We currently have 9 Hospice Neighbours and another 5 about to start. To become a Hospice Neighbour volunteers just have to want to help people in their local community, be friendly and have a few hours a week to spare. One Volunteer said: “The lady I go to see just wants to talk to somebody who has nothing to do with nursing or medicine” Up to now the scheme has supported 7 people in Ulverston, Flookburgh and Grange with a range of illnesses and needs. The support has been largely companionship, but as the relationship and trust has developed, Neighbours have been doing a variety of errands. Some have been going out shopping or for a lunchtime treat. Clients can be dubious at first but they soon enjoy the visits and the chance to chat to a different person through the week. Referrals to the service have come from Hospice Day Services, District Nurses and the clients themselves. One client said “I look forward to the visits. I know I can rely on my Hospice Neighbour to help out. She has done more than I initially thought she would”. If you or anyone you know wishes to volunteer as a Hospice Neighbour or you know of someone living with a life shortening condition that could benefit from having a Hospice Neighbour contact Anne Atkinson. Neat Feet
It’s anything but boring, maintaining the feet of the South Lakes populous. As ever, the weather presents many challenges. The winter of 2010 was the year of the crampon. The kit was consolidated into rucksacks and
through the snow we ploughed. David really did deserve his foot soldier stripes the day he notched up 9 miles on home visits. Then there was the day a lady, pregnant with twins and very overdue, requested a foot massage as she’d been advised it could induce labour. Now, our medical knowledge is pretty broad, but we never actually touched on midwifery at college. For once I was relieved my magic touch failed me! However, we shall never forget the time we were on Border TV to talk about the clinic we hold at Crosthwaite Memorial Hall. Fits of giggles from patients and practitioners made filming three minutes’ footage a challenge for the crew but goes to show: having your feet done by Neat Feet is memorable! They say that time flies when you are having fun and we must have had LOTS of fun as next month Neat Feet is celebrating ten years of putting a spring in the step of South Lakes. Here’s to the next ten!

As you are probably aware, our Grange-over-Sands Surgery will soon be moving from its current location on Albert Road to the new Health Centre at Berners Close. The planned date for the opening of the Health Centre is Monday 10th March. The partners are committed to retaining the GP services at Fairfield Surgery in Flookburgh alongside those that they offer at the new Health Centre. Our opening times will remain the same at Grange and Flookburgh. In preparation for the move we have installed a new telephone system with many more incoming lines, to ensure that you should never get an engaged tone, but you may be held for a short while in a queue. There is one new number to speak to staff who can book you appointments at either surgery, or help you with any other enquiries that you may have. There is currently an automatic divert to the new telephone number from our old numbers, but we would be very grateful is you could start to use our new number as soon as possible. Please note there is not an automatic divert to the new fax number, so it is important to start using the new fax number straight away. Our new contact details are: tel 01539 715715 www.peninsulamedicalpractice.co.uk Out-of-hours care will continue to be provided for our patients by Cumbria Health On-Call (CHOC) – 03000 247 247
South lakeland Carers
A visit to the hairdresser; attending a class; doing the weekly shop; coffee with a friend – most of us can do these things without much thought. However, the 12,000 unpaid carers in South Lakeland are not so fortunate. When you become a carer for a loved one, simple activities can become very difficult, if not impossible. Our team of 25 Sitting Service volunteers give carers time to themselves by sitting with the person they care for. Just 3 hours a month can make a huge difference to a carer’s life. Could you join us? The role does not involve personal care or lifting, just providing company and a presence in case of emergency. To find out more about getting involved, please contact Kathy Collins, Volunteer Manager, on 01539 815970 or kathycollins@ slcarers.org.uk.
better care together Transforming health services across North Lancashire and South Cumbria The ‘better care together’ review of local health services is being led by Lancashire North Clinical Commissioning Group, Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. Following public information and engagement events across both counties last year, we are now undertaking additional work to engage local communities in the debate about how health care and especially ‘out of hospital’ services could be delivered in the future. It is important that you have your say and we have organised another series of public events across the Morecambe Bay area, the events closest to you are as follows:
Mon 17 March: Kendal Town Hall 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:30 pm to 8:00pm Sat 22 March: Ulverston, Coronation Hall 10:00am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 5:00pm.
Events will include presentations on change in the NHS, work that is happening now and potential scenarios for future services. You will have your chance to discuss these issues with NHS professionals and to provide your thoughts and feedback. For further information about ‘better care together’, please visit our website at: www.bettercaretogether.co.uk or call us on 01524 518638. 15

and cannot believe the difference it has made both to her health and wellbeing. Before joining Slimming World, Veronica had tried every diet there was and managed to lose some weight, but it always seemed to creep back on. With Slimming World, she has received great support each week at the group meetings and this has helped her lose the weight and keep it off.
Slimming World
Consultant Veronica Jones opened the Grange-overSands Slimming World group in Allithwaite last October and the group has now grown to over 70 members. Veronica says “There has been a lot of press recently about the obesity crisis in Cumbria (65.8% overweight or obese in South Lakeland) and I am delighted that Slimming World Grange is tackling this head on by losing an amazing 46 stones between its members to date.”
At the group, you receive everything you need to get started, plus free access to the Slimming World website for that extra midweek support. If you want to lose weight in a warm, supportive and friendly environment, come along and join Veronica’s group each Wednesday at 7pm, Allithwaite Community Centre, Quarry Lane, Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands, LA11 9QJ.
The Slimming World food optimising eating plan allows you to fill up on a wide variety of healthy foods so you need never feel hungry again. You can even enjoy your favourite treats every day. Veronica has shed over 4 stones herself following the plan
Better Hearing
Over the past forty years the staff of St John’s Hearing have come to know and understand the many and varied needs of the hearing aid user. This experience, tied with the personal service which can only be provided by a dedicated family business, gives us a unique insight into your hearing needs. From our premises at Grange-overSands, or in the comfort of your own home, we try to introduce clients to the world of hearing aids in a relaxed
and pressure free environment. They have the opportunity to have answered any of the questions they have as regards hearing aids and their use, in a relaxed environment. We provide information and guidance on all the most up to date models of digital hearing aids from the world’s smallest to the worlds most powerful. We also give people the opportunity to try certain aids and therefore get a better idea of what to expect from a hearing aid. We also offer a gentle earwax removal service.
Would it be a small warm friendly place, where every person is known by their name? A place where doctors, nurses, opticians and dentists all visit regularly if needed. ? A place where you can receive help to get dressed and washed if you need it, where your make-up and hair are made up just the way you like it and your clothing gets washed and ironed for you? At the family run Old Vicarage in Allithwaite, the staff will always talk to you and say hello, from the cleaner and cooks to the carers, and ask you how your day is going. Our activities organiser will ask if you want take part in activities ranging from gardening to baking and cooking, arts & crafts, flower arranging, quizzes and music therapy. Perhaps you’ll join in our weekly choir, we also have regular visits from entertainers and outings to local events. We’ll find out what you like and help you enjoy it. At The Old Vicarage you can bring your own personal items including furniture and decorate the room however you like.
St Mary’s Hospice drop in
Grange St Mary’s Hospice drop in support group is one of three, the others being at Ulverston and Barrow. The purpose of the groups is to provide support and fellowship to anyone suffering from cancer or other life-limiting illnesses, and to carers and bereaved relatives. As St. Paul’ s Parish hail is due to close we will, from Friday 7th March, be meeting in the Father Magner Room at St. Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, Grange-over-Sands, from 2pm to 4pm. The format of the afternoon varies,
but generally from 2pm to 3pm approximately, we share light refreshments and chat! Once a month we are led in relaxation by Caroline a complementary therapist from St. Mary’ s Hospice; and on the first Friday of the month MacMillan nurse Nick Brown is available for consultation. Occasionally we are given a talk or demonstration, and the latter part of the afternoon is occupied with table games. An annual outing and Christmas meal completes the programme. So, if you need support there is always someone to listen to you. We know, for some (men) it can be difficult to drop in, but a telephone call first will mean we could arrange to meet you. It definitely helps to be among other people, rather than being alone, and to know that there are others who have or are experiencing similar circumstances. Your visit could be short or long but please come. For further information please contact Marie tel. 33279 or Betty 32035.
Osteopaths
Val and Jol Wardle are qualified Osteopaths with over 40 years combined clinical experience. They are both registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopathy is a hands-on therapy that aims to remove or minimise pain and improve mobility. It takes a holistic view looking at the how the body operates as a unit and what is causing the symptoms rather than just treating the symptoms. When you visit a detailed case history will be taken to find out more about the problem area, which will be examined and a treatment plan discussed with you. Treatment consists of a variety of techniques to relax and stretch tight muscles and mobilising joints to increase their movement. Advice will also be given on exercise, posture and lifestyle to speed up the healing process and help prevent problems reoccurring. Treatments last approximately 30-40 minutes and cost £35 per session. You will be advised on the anticipated number of treatments needed during your first session. They are authorised to accept payments from most Private Health Plans. You do not need a referral from your GP to make an appointment. Val and Jol are available for treatments Monday to Friday. Westerley
More of us live longer and healthier lives now than at any other time in history, but for some the latter years can bring challenges that mean there is a need for specialist support. Residential care has had some bad press lately, with shocking reports of abuse and neglect of the elderly hitting the headlines on a regular basis. It can seem like a last, worst resort. But it doesn’t need to be like that. We are fortunate to have some excellent residential care homes in the local area, one of which is the Westerly Christian Care Home. One happy resident said, “It is a good home. They do their very best. Last year I went to hospital and I was so glad to be back here. Back home I called it.” The Westerly prides itself on offering top-notch accommodation and food; warm, dedicated and well-trained staff; and an excellent programme of activities and entertainment. But what really makes it stand out is its emphasis on Christian values and spiritual support. Each morning there is a short devotion and once a month there is a communion service. Another resident commented that, “there is such a loving, caring atmosphere and I truly felt enveloped in it. The Christian ethos is felt throughout.” Perhaps, deep down, we all feel a sense of dread at the thought of ending our days in a care home. But the Westerly can give us comfort. It might not be such a dreadful idea after all.
Wombelles Cancer Support Group
The group was set up in 2012 as part of Macmillan Cancer support group initiative. As the name may suggest, the group is for anyone who
has been affected by gynaecological cancer. This applies to patients, former patients, family, friends and carers. So we are open to male and females. We have seven members at present but would welcome more. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month, from 1.30pm to 3pm, at CancerCare, Lakes Centre, in Kendal. In the winter months we generally meet at Kendal, but when the weather starts to improve, as of now, we start to get out and about. In March we will be lunching at Wilf’s in Staveley, and in April we will be going to the Car Museum and Café Ambio at Backbarrow. Following MacMillan’s ethos, we support each other, treating everyone with dignity and respect, and try to be part of and giving something back to the community. We very rarely talk about the “C” word, instead enjoying ourselves. Life is definitely too short! We have a blog site which is thewombellescancergroupkendal. blogspot.co.uk Our mobile phone number is 07770 851 896. Checked daily so either leave a message or text.
Healthy teeth
Oral health plays a big part in our overall health therefore it is important to know how to maintain good oral health. Diet largely affects oral health as sugar in food and drinks contributes to tooth decay which can eventually lead to the loss of teeth if left untreated. Sugary foods and drinks should be limited, and are best consumed at mealtimes, rather than as snacks throughout the day, as this decreases the number of times that your teeth are attacked by acid in sugar. Foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and cheese make good substitute snacks. Smiles Dental are now taking on new patients and offer a free new patient examination, call 015395 34554 to book an appointment.

He also competed in the North West 200 road race in Northern Ireland, where he qualified a creditable 27th in a top field of 45, but disappointingly the meeting was cancelled due to torrential rain. The next race meeting was the British Superbike meeting at Knockhill in Scotland. Unfortunately Tom fell at the infamous ‘hairpin’ and damaged his shoulder, effectively ending his race season.
For the 2014 season Tom is hoping to compete in the Northwest 200 again and also the Ulster Grand Prix as well as selected rounds of the British Superstock Championship. As Keith Hadwin of Station Yard Garage told Grange Now: “He shows a lot of promise and is a very good racer who should go far in the sport.” Tom would be extremely grateful if local businesses are interested in sponsoring him. Please contact him on 07828 851 926 or 015395 35443.
Tony ‘The Bear’ thanks ‘The Cubs’ “If it wasn’t for the ‘The Cubs’ I wouldn’t be here,” said Tony Newell after his recent success gaining a two year stint on the Professional Darts pro tour. ‘The Cubs’ is a generous group consisting of ten couples, who all contributed £10 a month over a 2 year period to pay for Tony as he progressed through the qualifying stages. Thanks also go to the landlords at the Commodore Hotel who donated time off and general support over a four-and-a-half year period that Tony worked there. In particular he is grateful to Commodore landlord John Errington who gave real support and now acts as his manager.
He now looks forward to being just one of only 128 pro tour card holders after a thrilling victory in qualifying against Dave Ladley. Following qualifiers, which took place in February, he is training hard for the big event in March where he hopes to appear on TV. Looking ahead Tony is now seeking sponsorship to help him attend competitions which cost just over £300 to enter and £100 to attend. Companies or private individuals who wish to get involved can get in touch via the Grange Now office. This could be a very low cost way for someone to get their brand out on national TV and be associated with a rising sports star.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI February’s meeting of Allithwaite and Cartmel WI proved to have quite an impact on the members. Following the business part of the meeting Olwyn Keogh from Silverdale gave us a talk about Chernobyl’s Children. The illustrated talk was both moving and heart-warming and had a profound effect on the audience. Instead of the normal monthly competition members had been asked to bring a gift for a child and this had been very well supported. However, after listening to Olwyn, the members had asked that we also take a collection. This raised over £250 to go towards helping the charity. The next meeting is on Tuesday 4th March at 2.00pm when the speaker is Lee Kitchingham who will give us a talk entitled “Journey to the Southern Ocean”.
The Embroiderers’ Guild This month we were introduced to Blackwork by Dorothy Pearce, one of our members who brought a range of samples for us to see. Dorothy began by giving us a short history of Blackwork and its popularity in the C.16th as seen in paintings of the time. Dorothy then gave a demonstration of where to start and how to follow the pattern chart. We were then shown how to count the little squares on the fabric and the number of threads to use. There was silence in the room as we all concentrated on counting the threads and following the chart. As we started there was quite a bit of unpicking but as we got used to the pattern it became easier. Dorothy was very patient with us and was on hand to sort out any problems as they arose. Thank you Dorothy for a good day. The next meeting is Tuesday 4th March when we will be making Calico Gardens with Gillian Darrington. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary, Anne Covell, on 01539 737049.

On the 10th of February Martin Cooper gave a presentation on The Canal System of England and Wales. He began by describing the construction of the first canals in the eighteenth century and went on to explain the importance of the canals in the progress of the industrial revolution where the transport of coal and iron were so important. He then showed the various canal features, especially the locks, bridges and aqueducts.

He concluded by describing his own experiences and the recent development of the canal tourist industry. PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. Members held a Friendship event attended buy 50 Soroptimists from the North West Region. The event was to commemorate WW1 and in particular the role of women in the War. Members gave presentations in costume featuring the different roles of women at home and at the front. £80 was raised for the British Legion ‘every woman remembered’ appeal. Grange Golf Club Another wet month has now gone by and we look forward to better weather this coming month so we can get the new golfing season off to a good start. The golf course has stood up well in all the rain and our very hard working green keepers have managed to keep some of the holes open most of the time, and our greens have been superb all over the winter months. Well done to Rob and his staff. Our Clubhouse is open to non-members for drinks and food during the day, so why not come along and relax in a nice clubhouse over a coffee or lunch? Bookings can also be taken for private functions, so give us a call to discuss your requirements. If you are considering joining as a member we have special offers on at the moment so please do not hesitate to give us a call to discuss your options with Graeme or Margaret. Tel: 015395 33180, Option 4.
Grange Lions Members of Grange Lions met at The Pastures, Allithwaite, for an informal meeting at the beginning of February. Everyone took something beginning with “F”...some were edible goodies, others just for fun. Our grand summer raffle and golf event in aid of St Mary’s Hospice was discussed at length and some good early decisions made. We also discussed
launching FOGL’S [Friends of Grange Lions]. This may possibly be at the end of March with information going to various places in Grange, including the Information Centre when it reopens. Look out for this if you are interested in helping us but are unable to commit to regular membership. We have great fun as well as our serious fundraising for local good causes. A donation of £100 for Syrian refugees was voted on and passed by all present and this will be sent to Lions of The Lebanon who will ensure it reaches the right people. We have also been asked to help with marshalling at Prom Art this year and all members present agreed that this would be a good idea as it is a regular local event during the summer.
Cartmel Art Society This last month our members have enjoyed two All Day Workshops led by professional artists. Jackie Hadwin joined us for a fun day when members painted sheep in watercolour which were then made into greetings cards. Also, Janette Phillips spent a creative day helping us to record our personal memories in a diary using various artistic techniques and media. Members are looking forward to our Spring Party when there will be the usual Jacob’s Join buffet, competitions and the auction, proceeds of which will go to a local charity. Unwanted art materials and books will be greatly appreciated. For more information about the Society visit www.cartmelartsociety.co.uk For membership enquiries please ring the Secretary on 015395 33725.
South Lakeland Mind This month we enjoyed a beautiful day out at RSPB Leighton Moss in continuation of our relationship with this fantastic local nature reserve. Conditions were perfect on the day; we spotted a Marsh Harrier swooping low over the mosses and a huge stag resting in the afternoon sun. This month we received an extremely kind gift from the 6th Form at Queen Katherine School in Kendal. Under the guidance of the Head of 6th Form, Cathy Earle, the students raised an incredible £2000 for us over the festive period with a wonderful array of sponsored activities. Overall £3000 was raised for Mind charities and we are extremely grateful to them for all their hard work. The money will go towards improving and expanding our online information and signposting resources so that young people have better access to mental health services, in line with MP Tim Farron’s initiative to plug the gap in mental health provision for this often overlooked group in society. We are also very excited about our Happy Monday celebration week (10th – 14th March) which will feature an online auction organised through our website: www.southlakelandmind.org.uk and Facebook page: www.facebook. com/southlakelandmind If you would like to organise your own event to celebrate Happy Monday on 10th March just get in touch on 01539 740591 or email:

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society Our first lecture of the year, ‘Postal History – Only Half a Story’, was given by Professor Brian Wilson. He explained that the title of the lecture came from the fact that the letter, usually read in isolation from what was in previous and future correspondence, was only half a story. He told of the joy of collecting original letters, which involved investigating the postal instructions and markings, researching the route and method of transport and finding out about the writer and recipient. He described the history of written communication from Roman times to 1841 when stamps were introduced so that the sender rather than the recipient paid the postage. He used examples from his collection, particularly letters either sent or received locally. We were fascinated with the story of a local serial criminal who wrote to James Stockdale of Cark in 1856 asking for money. Research revealed he had been transported in 1833, 1841 and 1849, then pardoned in 1860, but was tried again in 1867 and died in 1869. Our next meeting at Cartmel is on Thursday 6th March when Geoff Pegg will talk about ‘Holme, a village history’. Details from Pat Rowland on 015395 32234.
Grange Lecture Society Entertainment was provided by TV antiques expert Eric Knowles on 28th January when he presented, with characteristic irreverent wit, reminiscences of his career in antiques and of personalities he met in his role as resident expert on programmes like Antiques Roadshow. For antiques enthusiasts there were also finely detailed photographs, expertly commented upon, including some of ceramics on display at Towneley Hall and Tiffany glass at Haworth House, both venues in the part of Lancashire where Eric was brought up. Wildlife photographer and ornithologist Keith Offord returned on 11th February to talk about ‘Namibia – Land of Contrasts’. Namibia, with its wide range of habitats (forest, grasslands, mountains, desert and coastline), is home to a wealth of wildlife, including many species of birds and White and Black Rhino, which Keith illustrated with his own photographs set against stunning Namibian scenery. On 11th March retired Geography lecturer Paul Hindle, will close the season with a talk entitled ‘Bolivia – from salt flats to silver mines’, which will immediately follow the Society’s AGM. Proceedings begin in the Victoria Hall at 7.15pm.

This spectacular display must be getting very popular as £1,836 was gathered in their collection box. We do thank all those who contributed and helped raise this amount. Susan Marsden, a member of the Grange-over-Sands NSPCC Committee, has raised £225 with her quizzes over the past year, which has been much appreciated. At the end of March the supporters of the NSPCC will be pleased to hear that £7,630.71p has been raised by their generosity, which will go to help ensure that cruelty to children must be stopped.
Grange Art Society An enthusiastic group made our busy evening sessions all worthwhile, with promises to return for our second session on March 7th at St Paul’s Parish Hall at 7.15pm. Our visiting artist for February was Richard Johnson, who discussed the issues of combining reality with imagination. The need to avoid plagiarism but pay heed to public perceptions of well loved characters was explored and he motivated his audience to illustrate their own stories or poems, guiding them throughout the process. A most interesting and highly enjoyable time was had by all. On Thursday 13th February the Arthur Bristow competition took place with some wonderful pictures on display, however the winner was Val Wood with an excellent depiction of a kingfisher using graphite. On Thursday March 20th the well known artist from Appleby, John Sibson will be visiting us for the afternoon to demonstrate the secrets of seascapes, using acrylics. Visitors are welcome for a small charge of £5 at the door and £4 for members. For further information on any of the above please contact Pat Smith: 01539 535811 or Susan Page: 01229 861443.

Members heard a very interesting talk by Sue Mulvany about the Crown Jewels that WI members made to celebrate the Queen`s Diamond Jubilee. They were part of the magnificent display in Kendal Parish Church in 2012. Fourteen ladies spent 4 months constructing replica swords, orbs and crowns with great skill and ingenuity. Among materials used were plumbers` pipes, lemonade bottles, chocolate boxes and a dog`s rubber ball. This was Sue`s 32nd and penultimate talk as the jewels are becoming too frail to carry about the county. Up until Edward 1st reign, the crown and all the deceased monarch’s valuables were buried with him, and those made after that were melted down by Cromwell to finance war in 1649. The last object that we saw was the Imperial State Crown used for coronations. Next meeting: March 11th. Andy Lowe on “Discovering Lake District Villages”. It will be very interesting. Open to visitors. Tel: 52302.
During February members enjoyed a taste of the Greek Islands with John & Barbara Smith’s AV show; a thoughtprovoking presentation “Interpretation” by Rod & Margaret Smith was well received; “What makes a successful competition image?” was very ably presented by Alan Walker ARPS EFIAP EPSA DPAGB and the month ended with the Society’s annual print competition. Return visits by popular speakers are the norm for March. On the 3rd we welcome Les Ayres MPAGB APAGB EFIAP with his “For personal pleasure”, a two-part evening firstly with prints followed by sequences of images set to music. On 10th well travelled Chris Rowley LRPS presents his “Circumnavigation of Spitzbergen” - an adventure into Arctic regions. We have been informed that the District Council has been given permission by the Environment Agency to remove the silt from the bay at the southern end of the Ornamental Pond and spread it on the adjoining cleared area. The work is being scheduled to start on the 25th of February. The trees and shrubs for the replanting in the Ornamental Gardens have been delivered and planting should be started by the time you read this report. The District Council has also undertaken hedge lowering, tree and shrub cutting back and pruning throughout the Ornamental Gardens. The piles of chippings left behind will gradually be moved by our volunteers and spread on the newly planted areas.
The University of the Third Age is a self-help learning cooperative for older people no longer in full time work. It provides opportunities for member to share their knowledge, skills and experience and to gain new ones in a friendly, informal atmosphere – all you need is enthusiasm. Grange and District U3A is a thriving organisation with more than 300 members. We hold meeting in the Victoria Hall, Grange on the third Tuesday of each month when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over coffee and a biscuit. The main activities take place in over 30 interest groups, co-ordinated by members, and these range from the sedentary and cerebral (lunch club, countdown, languages, bridge and wine appreciation), to the creative (crafts, writing for pleasure and digital photography) and the active (geology, cycling and badminton). Grange U3A holds its Annual Enrolment Day at the Victoria Hall on Tuesday 18 March. This provides members with the opportunity to renew membership for the year but will be in the form of an open day, with the opportunity for the curious to learn more about us.

Lower Holker WI Members enjoyed a most relaxing evening in February with Catherine Hunt who introduced us to many aromas, most of them pleasant. We also had a “smelly” quiz identifying different aromas. Catherine gave us an excellent evening, informative as well as fun. March will see us at Lower Holker village Hall on Wed 5th march to hear Don Austin present “One Man’s Lakeland”. The meeting starts at 7.30pm, visitors and new members welcome.
Cartmel & District Flower Club On February 17th we welcomed Norma Halpin to our first meeting of the year. Her demonstration certainly lived up to the title “Spring into Action”. Spring flowers are not the easiest to work with. She showed us arrangements, some of which were simple and others more challenging. A continental design entitled “Norma’s Garden” was simple and elegant and used a selection of beautiful foliage from her garden. We had a good turn out, several signing on for the first time. Next month we welcome Jackie Walker from Bury, with a demonstration entitled “Looking to the Future”. We will be serving soup and sandwich from 12.45pm followed by the meeting at 2pm. We meet in Cartmel Village Hall. There is plenty of parking - come and join us.

Church News St. Charles, Grange
Once again it falls to the “stand in” to write this month’s offering on behalf St. Charles’ Parish. Fr. Parker departed in late January for a well-deserved holiday and we look forward to his return towards the end of February, hopefully refreshed, undoubtedly sun-tanned, and (more worryingly perhaps) “firedup” with new enthusiasm for us to redouble our feeble efforts! In the meantime, Parish life continues under the supervision of our two Deacons - George Bissett and Joe Pryzluckialthough, unlike previous years, there are no weekday morning services in St. Charles’ so anyone wishing to go to Mass during the week has to go to Boarbank. The church is of course open as usual for individual personal prayer. Each Sunday, however, we are fortunate to be able to call on Fr. Gooden or Fr. Taylor from Boarbank or Fr. Aisbitt from Ulverston to come to Grange and celebrate Mass at a rather “chilly” St. Charles, there having been no heat in the church during the week! Nonetheless, our grateful thanks go to Frs. Gooden, Taylor and Aisbitt for their continued kindness. Thursday afternoons and evenings have seen the continuation of the DVD talks and discussions on “The Good News of Jesus Christ” and at the time of writing the only service to have taken place during the week while Fr. Parker has been away was on February 11th, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes, when a service of Rosary and Benediction was attended by a respectable number of parishioners in spite of the inclement weather. The £500 raised at the Christmas concert has now been presented to the Rosemere Cancer Centre. Many thanks to all who supported that event. At the end of January we said “goodbye” to two very active members of the Parish, Peter and Pat Watson. They will be greatly missed and we send them our prayers, thanks and best wishes. The next social event will be the Annual Parish Lunch at The Grange Hotel on Sunday 2nd March. We are hoping for a good turn-out of parishioners before we all embark on the rigours of Lent in preparation for Easter. Finally, wherever you go and whatever you do in the coming weeks, may the Good Lord go with you. PS. If your car could travel faster than the speed of light, would your headlights still work?

St Mary’s, Allithwaite
Advent and Christmas now seem a distant memory but we will long remember the Angel Festival when we saw the church decorated with an amazing array of angels of all shapes and sizes created by the children at “Messy Church”, by members of the church and local community and at an “Angel Workshop” on a Saturday morning - as well as for the revival of “Café Allithwaite” which provided a range of delicious
refreshments during that morning, all served very professionally by waiters/waitresses from Allithwaite School. In January we celebrated the baptism of two of our children by immersion in the swimming pool at Abbot Hall, and the following week an adult baptism in church with Bishop James at a service of confirmation and of admission to communion of some of our younger members who have not yet been confirmed.
Women’s World Day of Prayer Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organization which enables the voices of women from all parts of the world to be heard: their hopes, concerns and prayers.
This was a truly exciting start to a new year when we look forward to growing in our faith and seeing God at work in our community. February has been a quieter month but we are looking forward to a Pancake Party for all the church family on March 5th and then, as we enter the season of Lent, to reflecting once again on the meaning of Jesus’ ministry here on earth culminating in His death and glorious resurrection at Easter.
pray with the women of Egypt for peace.
The preparation of the day is extensive. An international committee works from New York and each participating country has its own national committee. Regional conferences then meet to consider the service and local groups make their plans. In our area this year St Paul’s Parish Church is hosting the service at 2.30 pm on Friday 7th March when we will gather to celebrate using the programme offered by women in Egypt. Rev’d Celia McCulloch has agreed to be the guest speaker and the theme
of the service will be Streams in the Desert. We will be asked to reflect on our Christian role of being a ‘stream in the desert’ for those who experience spiritual ‘drought’ and it is felt that this service from Egypt will have universal appeal.
On March 7th it is envisaged that a great wave of prayer will rise with the sun over the island of Samoa and sweep across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, and finally come to rest in American Samoa some 36 hours later. By then the Women’s World Day of Prayer Service will have been celebrated in over 170 countries.
One of the oldest civilisations in the world, Egypt has long been home to Coptic Christians. Since the uprising in 2011 there has been conflict between religious groupings. Political change affects individual lives and we will
Men, women and people of all ages are all welcome to attend the service at St Paul’s and refreshments will be served afterwards when there will be an opportunity to meet up with friends old and new.

The accommodation was very basic for the group. To compensate, the porters were friendly and uncomplaining. President Marion Briddock read a scripture from Philippians which fittingly described the perseverance we need, that St. Paul recommended, pressing on to the Christian’s calling.
Martyn showed slides of Iona and told of the Rev George MacLeod who had set up the ecumenical community, which works for peace and social justice and is highly regarded.
Women’s Network, at Grange Methodist Church welcomed Michael Fieldhouse as their speaker on January 28th. He told how he had the vision of buying a property in Allithwaite and opened ‘The Lantern’ charity shop there. Over the years that this has been operative, it has contributed a considerable amount of money to charities including overseas Missions. This Tuesday, the speaker was Mr Don Austin from Bowness, who told his experience of trekking in the Himalayas about twenty years ago. One member of the party was Bob Langley, of ‘BBC Pebble Mill’ fame.

Arts & Music Spells of Time: An exhibition of works by Daniel Cooper 15th March – 20th April 2014
Daniel Cooper’s art responds to the atmospheric transitions throughout the seasons, inspired by the ephemeral and evocative spectacle of the changing weather around the surrounding landscape. Finding the fleeting moments in time made by the elements in nature most sublime and romantic, Daniel cares only to express these observations with emotional vigour and couples this with a subtle play with visual illusions; the work itself often shows how the land and skies transform in different angles of light. The work is often beings in situ and from numerous on site sketches and photographs, drawing with charcoal burnt on the Brantwood Estate, and mixing washes of subtle colour - a concoction of “mediums” which the artist keeps a secret. Daniel is proud to be showing solo at The Beach Hut Gallery - founded in 2009, alongside a co-operative of artists. Spells of Time shows new works exploring the spectacle of the local Lakes weather in landscape, including views of Morecambe Bay, Windermere and Coniston. Preview on Saturday 15th March, 11am - 6pm, and entrance is free. The choir has a large repertoire of music from Latin motets to more modern pieces with something to suit every chorister. We are a very happy group who often meet socially outside of church.
The choir offers a great opportunity to develop your singing talent and to meet other like-minded individuals engaging in active worship. Previous experience is not necessary and everyone is on a learning curve. You’ll be surprised how quickly you learn to cope with and enjoy the challenge of new music. When you feel ready to take your place in the choir you can sit with one of the experienced choristers who will make sure that you have all your music ready. People can sometimes be put off by what they perceive to be a big time commitment, but with choir practice just once a week on Friday evenings and one or two services on Sundays, this is not the case. Also, the more choristers available the easier it is to organise; no one is expected to attend every week of the year. And if you’re worried about looking silly in a cassock, think again! The good thing about choir robes is that they cover a multitude of sins. Just think: you need never iron a shirt or blouse for Sunday again. We are now one of very few four-part church choirs remaining in South Cumbria and hugely privileged to praise God in such stunning surroundings. But we can only maintain the choral tradition, grow and develop with a regular infusion of new choristers. Membership of any church choir is probably the finest musical education there is. After all, ‘who sings prays twice’ said Luther. If you want to give it a go come along and join us at a Friday evening choir practice. We meet in the Priory at 7.15 pm and sing until around 8.45 pm. If you would like to know more, please contact Adrian Self (Director of Music) on: 01229 467432 or: selfmus@macace.net

Farewell to Haines and Lowrie

In February 2014, Lindale joiners John Haines and Bill Lowrie are retiring from Smithy Hill Works after 50 years of service. When Bill started at Smithy Hill Works in 1962 there were 11 other joiners working there. They were agricultural joiners, building barns, making cartwheels, wooden rakes and mending hay carts. The Farmers’ Guardian made an illustrated article about Walter Atkinson, the head joiner, making ‘the last wooden wheelbarrow in the area’. All the work was by hand, there were no power tools at that time. The works were all flat belt driven by a 10 horse power motor, which might nowadays be considered a Health and Safety nightmare. They did lots of big jobs, refitting hotels in Kendal
and Ulverston, repairing houses for the Council. The joiners would sit around the fire in the works during their lunch break, and try out Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling holds. They were all immensely strong and great characters. Smithy Hill works started as a barn for Brackenbarrow Farm opposite, then became William Snape’s engineering shop. The upper floor was once used as Lindale’s village hall, and by the Home Guard during the war. The building will continue to operate as a joinery. Sylvia Woodhead
Talk to an Insurance specialist Unless you have a second home in sunnier climes it seems likely that you will be somewhat disillusioned with the weather we have been having recently. February seems to be following on from January, which itself was the wettest month on record. While the worst problems are out of our area we have certainly not escaped lightly, and we do have many homes that are in flood risk areas. The variety of homes in Cumbria, from traditional cottages to coastal properties, makes it more difficult for many of the county’s homeowners to buy home insurance. The very different nature of the properties accounts for many examples of what the insurance industry calls ‘non-standard risks’ – anything falling outside
the standard categories set by the insurance industry. Homes located near water, as many of our local properties are, or those which have previously flooded come into this category. However, ‘non standard’ also includes many other properties, such homes owned by people with an abnormally high number or recurring claims. It could also be due to the construction of the property, as anything other than bricks and mortar is deemed ‘unusual’. Thatched roofs and timber constructions are classic examples. Non-standard properties also include holiday homes; those shared by boarders or lodgers; and others undergoing renovations that prevent occupancy during the refurbishment. To insure properties like this, you need access to an insurance specialist
whose knowledge can steer you through the process. A non-standard risk needs to be treated as a bespoke case, with a policy written specifically for it. This might be something that some aggregator sites are just not quite as geared up to handle. Furness (and some other insurance brokers) can provide not just non-standard insurance, but more keenly priced quotes by working with multiple providers. A panel of insurers competitively tender for a homeowner’s insurance needs. In effect, just like comparison sites, Furness can select from a range of different insurers to obtain the most competitive deal – call into any of the Furness branches or call the insurance quoteline number on 0800 083 2429.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, On a recent visit to Grange, visiting my parents who are both 80+, I was horrified at the parking situation in the town. I live in SW Scotland where we have free parking except for the NPC car park in Dumfries. If houses are to be built between Grange and Allithwaite that will mean more cars to the town. As I said before, my parents are 80+ and my mother is disabled and finds it hard to walk any distance. I suggest that Grange Council take note or people are going to shop further afield. Roll on Booths and possibly a fuel station! T.I.C. White Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway
Dear Editor, My late aunt, Sadie Crompton, of Ashness, Kents Bank Road, Grange, often spoke of how kind ‘Diane’ was to her and asked me to contact her. I do not know Diane’s surname and cannot find it among her papers; nor can her neighbours help. She asked me to contact her to thank her personally. Can anyone help? I think she may live outside Grange but nearby. Name and address supplied NB: If you have any information about ‘Diane’, please contact the Grange Now offices.
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
outside the shop opposite the Post Office as this bay would be rendered unnecessary with the advent of the free parking round the corner. If this seems too harsh then specified delivery times could be shown when Higginsons have right of use. This would enable people to pop into the Post Office for stamps etc., although when the Post Office is very busy one doesn’t just ‘pop in’! One of the benefits, too, would be to get people to walk a bit more round the town and so, apart from getting the exercise, they might be inclined to go to other shops on their way, too! Hope this observation seems positive. Lawrie Woodley, Grange
Dear Editor, I would like to thank our county councillor, Bill Wearing, for getting the pavements repaired and the road markings re-painted in and around the town. A grateful Grange resident

Dear Editor, In 2001 the Civic Society, the Local History Group and the Photographic Society received a ten thousand pound grant from the National Lottery to stage a 10 day exhibition, in the Victoria Hall, of photographs of Old Grange. The then Town Council was presented with a large photograph of the town, to celebrate the centenary of the Victoria Hall, which was on the wall by the kitchen door. Also there were other framed photographs on the walls in the upstairs corridor of previous serving mayors and the Council Chamber contained items of interest and history. The disappearance of the photographs remains a mystery. Does anyone know of their whereabouts? Judith Shapland, Grange
Dear Editor, I would like to congratulate you on the presentation of Grange Now, and read with interest your article in the February issue about the proposed one-way system in Grange. When the former Crown Hotel was being converted into apartments, we were at that time in business at the delicatessen on Kents Bank Road, and a one-way system was implemented. The traffic moved very efficiently, coming up the Main Street, bearing left down The Esplanade, turning right into Cross Street for Kents Bank Road (or continuing along to Cox’s Corner to head out of town), and from Cross Street traffic turned right in to Kents Bank Road, proceeding along to Pig Lane, going right past the Church, then left to go down the Main Street. For access to the Fell Road, traffic went past the Post Office as normal. Delivery vehicles were able to park for off-loading and normal traffic was not impeded. As this system worked very smoothly without any increased cost to the Rate Payer, I would suggest that the same system be put in place, a few direction signs at strategic places is all that would be needed. Alan Turnbull, Grange
Dear Editor, I very much agree that Kents Bank Road should be made one way - I’m not fussed much which way it operates. However, additionally, there should be no on street parking and instead the car park be free with a maximum waiting time as there is in the parking bays currently along the road. This would enable the vast majority of shoppers to get their shopping done without incurring any penalty and keep traffic moving. To avoid speed problems along the road there should be a 20mph limit plus a crossing outside Bargain Booze to allow pedestrians to cross from one side to the other. The Co-op may bleat about delivery problems but they already have an access slipway which should be used; Spar have one at the back of their shop which they have to use. Higginsons may have a delivery problem but it should be possible to use the parking bay

This term at Flookburgh School we were all working hard to ensure the standards of reading improve. We aim for every child to feel motivated to read with a special emphasis on understanding what they read and parental support in this matter is hugely appreciated. On Thursday 13th February we held a Collaborative Learning “What We Love” event and it was a very teamfocused, productive morning. Parents, class 1, 2 and Nursery children also enjoyed a Knights Challenge which was
organized by KS2 teachers to do with the ‘Castles’ topic. It was a lovely morning, one that was both fun and challenging. We are delighted to have welcomed new teachers and staff at our busy school. Classes 1 and 2 have got new teachers Miss Cannon and Mrs Procter who are both very impressed by how well everyone is working and had a
Lindale School ‘resoundingly good’ result Children, staff, parents and governors at Lindale CE Primary School are celebrating the results of an Ofsted inspection that rated it as ‘Good’ in all areas of its work. The two-day inspection in late January came one year after an Ofsted visit resulted in an assessment of ‘Requires Improvement’. All those involved with the school have been working hard since then to tackle the issues raised by Ofsted, and they have been rewarded with some very positive comments from the latest inspector. The report noted: “From requiring improvement on all fronts, the school is now resoundingly good.” It saw “marked improvements” in pupils’ progress across the school, especially in writing, and observed “good and occasionally outstanding” teaching. The improvements at Lindale school have been driven by Headteacher Sarah Coleman, who said: “We are all delighted with this Ofsted judgment. The report reflects the efforts of the whole team—our fantastic children, staff, parents and governors. One of the great strengths of the school is its relationship with the local community, and everyone should feel very proud of the improvements we have made.” 26

As these are well supported enrol early as we limit numbers. We also have a Creative Yoga Master class in Ulverston on the 8th March with Sue Ward. We start a short weekly eBay class on the 4th March for 4 weeks, an ideal opportunity to learn about how to buy and sell and earn some money for yourself by selling unwanted items to you, treasures to others! We also have an Introduction to Social Media class planned but not due to start till May now but names are being taken. If you love cookery and you want to eat more healthily why not sign up to our lively
cookery classes with Julie Woodburn who will be looking at Wholesome Wholefoods, starting 5th March. Again, we are three short of viability for a Level 3 Counselling course which is a great as a stepping stone to prepare you to embark on the Level 4 qualification, due to start in September 2014, so your call could make all the difference. In our series of personal development workshops we have one looking at Anger Management on the 8th March, exploring what triggers your anger and how you can better manage yourself to improve relationships at home and work and stop your anger costing you opportunities and possibly career progression. On the arts and craft front we have a number of exciting workshops which include a
Glass Fusing workshop on the 1st Feb at Marilyn Hale’s own studio, a Crochet and Chat workshop for those who have done some crochet in the past but wish to refine their skills from the 15th to the 29th March, How to Do Batik on the 1st Feb and a Rag Rugs workshop on the 8th Feb both with Caren Threlfall and a Paint in Acrylics workshop with Peter Threlfall on the 1st February. If you do photography now and have some knowledge, but would like to improve your technique why not sign up for our weekend landscape photography class aimed at
We are taking names for running classes which we hope to re-start again in March, once it is a bit warmer. We aim to run another Beginners class and also one for those who have taken the introductory course, looking at more ambitious runs over varied terrain.
