An element of taxation which we are often asked about is the “age related tax trap”.

This a somewhat technical aspect of the taxation of Investment Bonds and how it interacts with income tax allowances and I will aim to provide an overview within this article.

All UK resident taxpayers are entitled to a personal income tax allowance which is £9,440 in the current tax year. In fact, this is quite a sharp increase from the previous tax year when it was £8,105.

However,from age 65 the allowance increases to £10,500 and at age 75 to £10,660. For now, let us put that to one side and look at the type of investments that the age related trap relates to.

Different investments are taxed in different ways – some are tax privileged or tax free, some incur income tax, some incur capital gains tax etc. The age related income tax trap relates specifically to Investment Bonds (single premium

Mary Ann says, “At least Chris won’t have to do everything himself. In the early days I sold the adverts, typed all the reports, wrote the stories, took the photos, helped with paste up (no computers then) and collated the pages on the kitchen table. Luckily times have moved on since then!

Many thanks to everyone involved over the years and I hope you all continue to support my baby Grange Now in the years to come.”

Rather a hefty baby now, from its modest 4 page first issue,it grew to a regular 28 pager and this month Mary Ann bows out with 32 pages.

Investment Bonds as opposed to Bank or Building Society Fixed Rate Savings Bonds).

The taxation of these investments are subject to what is known as “chargeable event rules” and phrases such as “chargeable event gains” and “top sliced gains” come into play – for the purpose of this explanation we do not need to know what they mean just simply that it is this type of investment that is affected.

This type of Investment Bond has basic rate tax deducted at source that is not reclaimable. Therefore (with a few specific exceptions) a basic rate tax payer will generally have no additional tax liability on the proceeds of an Investment Bond that is encashed.

However, although there is no additional tax liability on the bond proceeds themselves, it is possible that the encashment can result in additional tax being paid by those aged over 65 who have thus far received an increased personal income tax allowance.

The reason for this is that if one’s income is above a certain level (£26,100 in the current tax year) then the increased age allowance reduces for every £1 above that

set income level. And this where the age related income tax trap can come into play – encashment of the Investment Bond may not see any additional tax payable on the proceeds but can result in one’s income going past that level and therefore reducing, unwittingly, the increased personal income tax allowance from the higher level back down to the basic level.

As a consequence, extra tax is paid simply by virtue of having a lower personal allowance.

It is worth noting the intention of this current government to increase the basic personal allowance to a point where the allowance is the same regardless of age (and at that point the age trap will disappear).

For those who understood the above explanation I congratulate you and for those who did not please do ask your advisers if relevant to you!

CartmelVillage Society AGM

Community dementia forums As part of the implementation of the Cumbria D e m e n t i a S t r a t e g y , Alzheimer’s Society has been hosting a series of Community Dementia Forums twice yearly throughout Cumbria.

These forums provide an opportunity for us to update local people on a range of dementia related issues such as

the Cumbria Dementia Strategy, local services and national initiatives.

Bay Search & Rescue charity shop off to a good start.

I can’t believe we have now been open for 5 months – where does the time go?

We are always very grateful for all your donations and apologise if we have had to turn any of your items away due to lack of space. We don’t have a very large storage area and sometimes if we have had lots of donations that day, we struggle to find space for more – but please continue to try as we will always do our best to accommodate. For these reasons, please could we ask that donations are not left outside the shop when we are closed – thanks.

We have an excellent team of volunteers. However,if you would like to volunteer we are still looking for help on

a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning plus Saturday afternoon. Volunteers will be trained in all aspects of the role and asked to help with sorting and pricing stock as well as till work. Pop in for a chat or call 83312 for more details.

I am aware that quite a few of you are unable to shop during our opening times due to work commitments.

If so, why not take advantage of our late night shopping. I will open the shop for an hour in the evening exclusively for a group of 6 – 8 friends. That way, you and your friends can browse the shop in peace (without children) at your leisure – you may find that outfit you’ve been looking for! Flood Group to take action

From April 2014 Cumbria County Council will take on a statutory duty to investigate flooding incidents in Grange. The Grange & District Flood Action Group will collect information put forward by residents highlighting ongoing issues to form a flood resilience plan for the town.

Joanna Greenway, Grange Town Councillor, said: “This is our opportunity to start gathering information about the problems with flooding in our area, to bring forward local knowledge about where it is happening and any possible solutions there might be…[Cumbria County Council] have more clout on this issue and will be able to get things moving at a much quicker pace than before.”

Flooding in Grange

In the September edition of Grange Now there was an article from the Grange Flood Action Group about the problems relating to flooding being faced by members of the group i.e. shops who occupyYewbarrowTerrace, the Boulevard, Windermere Road and the car dealership opposite. As the new Portfolio Holder for the Environment and People flooding comes under my jurisdiction and I have a great deal of sympathy for people in this situation as I live in Backbarrow where flooding also affects businesses and homes. I have endeavoured to establish exactly where the responsibilities lie with regard to flooding which was one of the questions being asked by the group..

It is understood that extreme weather will happen more frequently in the future and the Flood and Water Management Act passed in 2010 was intended to provide “better, more comprehensive management

of flood risk for people, homes and businesses“. It sets out clear responsibilities for managing flood risks. Defra has overall national responsibility for policy and provides funding for flood risk management authorities through grants to the Environment Agency and local authorities. The Environment Agency is responsible for taking a strategic overview of the management of all sources of flooding. It has operational responsibility for managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs,estuaries and the sea.

Lead Local Flood Authorities, in our case the County Council, are responsible for developing, maintaining and applying a strategy for local flood risk management in their areas and for maintaining a register of flood risk assets. They have lead responsibility for managing the risk of flooding from surface water, ground water and ordinary watercourses.

District Councils are partners, they can carry out flood management works on minor water courses in partnership

Legion sold The old Royal British Legion premises in Grange have been sold by auction but it seems to a mystery buyer. No doubt all will be revealed in due course.

Also a mystery is what has happened to some artefacts in the premises.

One of our readers believes there was a display of wooden army badges

with the County Council and have to take flooding risks into account when taking decisions on development. Highway Authorities provide and manage highway drainage, in our case Cumbria Highways and the Highways Agency for the A590.

The lead Local flood Authority is quite clearly Cumbria County Council in the legislation and they also have responsibility for Highway drainage. There were several Flood Action Groups in Grange, I understand from the Town Clerk these have all been pulled together into one group: the Community Flood Action Group which is now working with all the different agencies and I am only too pleased to support them in any way I can as Portfolio Holder For Environment and People at SLDC. The lead officer for flooding at SLDC is Mr Phil Greenup 01539 793420 and at the County Council they are Doug Coyle or Anthony Lane (both on same number 01228 221321).

on the wall of the Legion. School children in the late fifties brought the badges to the brand new Cartmel Priory School (opened in 1958) at the request of their teacher Mr Swan.

Their fathers had all been in the Second World War and the children were proud to show off their fathers’ emblems.They ended up in the Legion along with a ceramic plate of the 2nd Infantry Division. Does anyone know where these commemorative items are now?

Lighting of the Christmas Tree The 67th lighting of the Grange Christmas Tree in the Ornamental Gardens will be on the 7th December with festivities commencing at 6pm.

Our appeal letters will be delivered during November and thank you to those who have already contributed to this year’s event.

The judging of the best decorated shop window and hotel will take place on the 6th December. We look forward to seeing you all at the lighting and thank you for your continued support.

We have a new film star in Grange and Flookburgh. Father Parker of St Charles & St Cuthberts is appearing in the new British feel good film ‘Sunshine on Leith’.

Demolition starts

By the way have you looked on the SLDC website to see the plans, or visited the Town Council offices? Some readers have expressed dismay that the proposed affordable homes to be built on the site by a housing association will be in a three story building right at the front adjacent to Kents Bank Road and will be out of keeping with the fine old stone properties opposite.

When Grange Now mentioned this to the Town Council we were told that the building will be a similar size to the old pool and occupy a similar position.

Musical Notes Ulverston Jazz Appreciation Society The tuneful music of George and Ira Gershwin, perhaps the best known of those prolific and highly gifted composers of so many memorable Broadway and Tin Pan Alley songs of the ‘30s and ‘40s, has long provided ideal material for jazz musicians. This was well illustrated at the September meeting when members enjoyed a variety of the masters’ songs recorded by jazz groups.

Other presentations featured the fine ‘hard bop’ trumpet playing of Donald Byrd and rare recordings of smallgroup leaders unusually fronting big bands.

The programme for October included Courtney Pine, Three Bs in Contrast (Tony Bennett, Richard Rodney Bennett and George Benson), and Big Bang Basie.

The November 21 programme includes: Skid Marks - British tenor saxophonist Alan Skidmore is influenced by the great Coltrane; Kosher Jazz - there’s a strong Jewish ’vibe’ in jazz with many jazzmen from this musical background; The Wow Factor - all jazz enthusiasts remember the impact of great solos and performances on their musical lives. The Society meets monthly at Bardsea’s Malt Kiln Village Hall, near Ulverston, where it presents jazz recordings from all eras, with expert commentary, on high quality audio equipment. Sessions start at 7pm, refreshments included in the £2 charge.

Grange Amateur Operatic Society Members of the society are enjoying rehearsals for “Blitz”, their production for 2014.The show, as the title suggests, takes place in 1940s war–torn London.

The cast calls for a number of children approximately aged 7 – 12 years, both girls and boys. Our producer, Christine, is looking to recruit about twelve to join the show. Auditions will be at the end of November with rehearsals starting in the New Year. If you fancy joining the happy cast of “Blitz”, give our secretary, Ann, a ring on Grange 36196. Grange’s Parish Hall

Westmorland Orchestra Around fifty musicians, under conductor Richard Howarth, gathered together in late September to be taken, sight unseen, through one of the more difficult symphonies in the classical repertoire. This was the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, which will be the main item in the orchestra’s December concert. Musicians who attended the free open day from around the country were delighted with the experience, and the orchestra has gained new players.

There is an innovation in this first December concert: the orchestra has invited one of Kendal’s leading choirs, Kendal South, to join them in a performance of Towards the Unknown Region by Vaughan Williams, which will be directed by their conductor, Ian Thompson. The other tuneful pieces in the programme are by Walton – his 1953 Coronation March – and Elgar. The season’s second concert will feature Russian music, to include Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto, while the May concert includes Czech and French popular classics.

Firstly, a huge thank you to Pat Brooks who raised an incredible £500 for the playground. Pat had her head shaved to raise funds for the playground and on behalf of Pat we would like to send our appreciation out to all her sponsors for being so generous in raising such an amazing sum of money.

Our second massive thank you goes out to all those who joined us in the September sunshine for our “Barbie in the Park” event.We had a fantastic day and enjoyed great local support, raising over £300 for the playground coffers! A huge thank you to those who baked cakes, donated raffle prizes, helped with the event on the day and especially to those who attended and made the day so special.

Events like these would not be possible without such exceptional community spirit and support.

The wacky races were a big hit, the enthusiasm of the kids and adults created some very memorable moments. Look out for round two next year!

Festive period parking charges SLDC will be offering special parking over the festive period with free parking will on Sundays in all of its pay and display car parks in the four weeks to Christmas (1, 8, 15 and 22 December). This also covers the pay on exit car park at the Westmorland Shopping Centre.

The council will also offer a £1.20 flat rate at all of its pay and display car parks in Kendal (including the Westmorland Shopping Centre) for the Christmas light switch on (Sunday 17 November).

Visitors to Ulverston can take advantage of the town’s Super Saturday Market offer on Saturday 2 November and Saturday 7 December with parking offered at a £1.20 flat rate between 8am and 6pm.

“Hero Squad”

On the 23rd of October, Flookburghbased Bay Search and Rescue featured on CBBC’s “Hero Squad 2”. Hero Squad follows six children (aged 12 – 13 years) as they are trained up by the various emergency services around the UK and take part in a staged Hero Squad rescue.

This episode features Gary Parsons and the team training cadets in techniques involved in quicksand rescue and the specific dangers of Morecambe Bay. It culminates in the cadets performing a full simulated rescue.

The series is presented by Rav Wilding and was filmed at Bay Search and Rescue’s Flookburgh station at Easter. Lido to be resurrected?

The survey and consultation document just completed by NeoNow for SLDC has cost £15,000 to get people’s views on the old Lido on the prom (formerly known as Grange Baths). There were three attempts before the final survey paper was produced.

Grange Now attended the presentation at the Victoria Hall and thought it left a lot to be desired. On the Wednesday and Thursday the display was in the entrance hall! The space provided only allowed for three people at a time to look and they were in competition with the public using the loos or visiting the council offices.

Some of the options listed on the voting form were thought badly conceived. Option 3 asked if people wanted the Lido restored (presumably as an open air pool). Naturally a majority would probably say yes.

We would all like to have our

Lido back but as SLDC closed it over 20 years ago and its deterioration since is such that it would cost a fortune to put right. Option 1 suggested ‘Doing nothing’.Option 2 suggested‘Fill in Lido and develop over site.’

Filling in to create an open space/ seating area/ performance area is better than doing nothing – which seemed a silly question to us – why spend £15,000 on a survey in that case? Option 4 asked if we wanted the Lido restored as a central focus of other activities which serve to sustain it financially – the problem is there are eleven other venues within a 3 mile radius of Grange that have problems remaining viable.

Options 5 & 6 asked if there should be a retractable roof or a permanent one. Think of the cost!

AWater Splash feature has been looked into and would cost £250K to install and it would cost 100K to make the buildings fit for business use we have been reliably informed. It could be a popular feature for town during the summer months with an

income from it by an admission charge. The water is recycled and chlorinated and could operate within the pool so no filling in is required. During the winter months the same area could be franchised to an ice skating company who provide all the facilities. The buildings could be let out to interested groups of businesses.

With the demolition starting as we go to press on the late lamented Berners Pool it is a salutary reminder of how much swimming pools need to be viable in this day and age, so it seems a pipe dream to think of a reinstated Lido. We do have several local hotel pools that are available for public use (most via a membership club) and Ulverston and Kendal pools within reach after all.

Grange Now has reported many times on Grange pool surveys – on the Lido and Berners, over the years.Let us hope this survey will be the last of them and we get a result this time. Over to you Town Council (and SLDC) and good luck!

Dear Editor, Lido Exhibition – very disappointing

I visited this on the Thursday and it was in a fairly cramped space in the entrance to Victoria Hall. This made it even more difficult to read the text on the panels as it was so low down. I was very worried that the only options up for discussion were about re-instating the Lido (or ‘bathing pool’ as it was always known when I swam there in the 1960/70s).

This was supposedly the favoured option by those who filled in a questionnaire but it seems strange to look at this as the only viable option. Some of the other options in the questionnaire got a high percentage of ‘votes’ too. And don’t forget that some people would have only filled in half the questions due to printing problems.

When we were looking at what to do with the old pool a few years ago we had several options before us and I don’t recall the ‘winning’ one being the restoration of the Lido.

Even if a Lido was the preferred option then I was also worried about the figures on display. Not much detail other than it would cost around £7 million and a vague projection of likely income.What about the longer term maintenance and running costs? What are they likely to be and who will be paying them? This was one of the reasons the pool at Berners closed and also why other pools such as the one at Troutbeck Bridge have closed. This sort of money will not come from English Heritage and it certainly won’t come from another public body such as SLDC or Grange Town Council. If the figures aren’t detailed enough then who is going to want to take on such a costly enterprise?.

Please do some more research and lets have some of the other options appraised and analysed.

Policing update

problem again, maybe the antisocial use of vehicles in especially Hampsfell Road Car Park. Please mention to your youngsters that if they continue to use the car parks in Grange for anything other than parking they are liable to a large fine from SLDC. Police have been instructed to increase their patrols to these car parks and will pass vehicle ownership details to the council. Finally Trading Standards and the police are launching the second No Cold Calling Zone in the area on 23rd October.The new zone is being established on the on the Fairfield Estate in Flookburgh.

It is very unusual for me to report a small rise in a number of crimes in area.

Unfortunately we have had a couple of incidents of domestic burglary in Grange. An individual has been arrested and CID are investigating, so please make sure your alarms are set and working and that you have taken all the necessary precautions to make your property secure.

Driving around in the patrol car sometimes late I notice people leaving their garage doors open, I cannot understand why. Please lock your garages at all times and we will then reduce the number of “opportunistic thefts” we are having.

During the first two weeks of October three charity box thefts were reported to Cumbria Police. All three reports gave the same description of a white male in his mid-50s with white or grey hair. He was reportedly wearing a distinctive large brimmed hat and carrying a rucksack.

Cumbria Police are advising that if you have a charity box on display at your premises that you remain extra vigilant. If you see anyone matching the above description please contact Cumbria Police immediately on 101.

Trouble in Cark

Residents in Cark have told Grange Now about anti social behaviour in the village. Wheelie bins shoved into the road, traffic cones thrown likewise, plants knocked over and thrashed and a foot ball deliberately kicked into the path of a car. The police have been informed and have a good idea who troublemakers are so watch out!

Grange scoops gold for Cumbria in Bloom

Cartmel accepts Silver award at Britain in Bloom Sandra and Philip Pascall and David Crabtree represented the Cartmel in Bloom group at Cleethorpes in October to receive Cartmel’s silver award.

During their August visit of Cartmel, the judges commented that “Cartmel is a beautiful village in which to live and visit.

The Bloom Group here are engaging in environmental and floral projects that make a real difference, brightening up and improving the place for all.”

At the town council meeting on Oct 14th members of the Grange in Bloom Group presented the Cumbria in Bloom awards to the Town Council. Grange were awarded GOLD and the Jennings Trophy for Best Small Town and the South Lakeland Trophy for Best in the Borough.The awards will be displayed in the foyer of the Victoria Hall along with the ‘Outstanding’ award presented to the Promenade Gardening Group.

During the last two weeks of October the group have been busy emptying the planters around town and re-planting for the winter.

Many thanks to those who helped and to the kind lady who donated some money towards the re-planting.

County Matters

County council proposes, Budget saving options for 2014/15 A set of 35 savings propositions have been put forward for public consultation following agreement by Cabinet that the Cumbrian public and other stakeholders should be asked for their views on how the county council should tackle its toughest ever financial challenge. Reductions in central government funding mean the council has to save £80 million over the next three years, with the propositions identifying £24.4 million of potential savings for next year (2014/15).These savings are on top of the £88 million in savings already delivered since

2010.The full list of propositions and overview of the Our Area, Our Future consultation is available at www.cumbria.gov.uk/ourfuture, with hard copies to be distributed throughout council offices and local libraries.The consultation, which is now open, will run until 20 January.

Our County Council Neighbourhood Forum met on Thursday 17th October at Grange Library.The main agenda item was a presentation and talk by Kendal GP Dr Alistair McKenzie around the “BETTER CARE TOGETHER” programme.This is a review of local hospital and community health services, which will provide us all with the opportunity to give our views on the consultation.

Also Janet Thompson gave us

an update on the workings of Healthwatch which is an organisation working to champion the views of patients and people who use health and social care in Cumbria, with the aim of making our services better.

Both speakers were well received with many questions coming from the audience.

his delightful wife Olive coming a close second. As well as showing a great sense of humour, Cedric finished the evening by wowing us all playing a trombone solo with the Morecambe Brass Band. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. I hope Cedric and his wife enjoyed it as much as the audience did.

My second official engagement this month was at the Charter celebration of the Grange Lions Club.This took place at the Grange Hotel and was a formal lunch with toasts and speeches. The Grange Lions Club is a group of people who give up their free time and energy to support local groups and charities as well as raising money for charity themselves. I was very

well looked after, particularly by the President’s husband, and enjoyed a delicious meal and good company.

On behalf of the town I also accepted the two awards which Grange won in Cumbria in Bloom this year. Once again the Bloom team have surpassed themselves in their endeavours to make the town a centre for gorgeous gardens, prodigious planters and burgeoning beds. On behalf of all those who enjoy the fruits of their efforts may I say a massive ‘Thank you’ to you all.

At this point I must tender my apologies, as unfortunately I was unable to attend the annual prize giving at Cartmel Priory School.

Deputy Mayor’s Report Unfortunately the Mayor has been unwell this month, so I have been privileged to attend two delightful but very different events on behalf of the town in his stead. I am sure we all wish Councillor Bailey well.

The first event was an evening devoted to Cedric Robinson in honour of his 50 years as Queen’s Guide to the Sands. This was held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston which was packed to the roof. The evening consisted of an eclectic mix of film clips, music and celebrities talking about Cedric.

However, for me the star of the evening was Cedric himself, with

Warts and verrucae

Warts and verrucae are skin growths caused by infection with a virus; the human papilloma virus.

The common wart is often found on the hands and the plantar wart is found on the soles of the feet and is sometimes called a verruca. The wart virus gets into the skin through small breaks in the skin surface; infection is also thought to be more likely when the skin is macerated.

Due to the pressure of walking on a plantar wart (verruca), it can often be flattened and pushed up into the skin, so can have a different appearance to a common wart. Plantar warts usually have a rough surface with thickened skin around it.

Tiny black dots can sometimes be seen, which are actually small burst blood vessels. They can cause pain, particularly when the wart occurs on a pressure point such as the heel or ball of the foot. There are many treatments available for warts but none are 100% effective.

Almost all wart treatments rely on the destruction of the wart-infected cells along with an increased exposure of the wart virus to the immune system. It is therefore recommended that advice is sought from a healthcare professional.

Affordable homes ‘black spot’

New research by Shelter reveals that across 56% of the North West less than a third of the suitable homes for sale are affordable for a typical family hoping to get on the first rung of the property ladder.The charity looked at asking prices for all of the properties for sale in the North West on a single day, and compared them with the mortgage that families, couples and single people on average wages could afford as first time buyers.

In 15 local authority areas less than a quarter of the homes on the market were affordable for families - even assuming that they were able to save a large 20% deposit. The picture is even bleaker for those looking to take part in the government’s Help to Buy scheme, where a 95% mortgage would mean higher monthly mortgage costs.

South Lakeland is a ‘black spot’ where less than 3% of homes for sale were affordable; young families in the region face nearly nine years of saving before they can afford the deposit for a home of their own.

In nearly half of the areas the situation for single people looking for a home of their own was even bleaker, with fewer than 10 affordable homes in every 100 for sale in almost half of areas.

In light of Shelter’s research, a recent South Lakes affordable homes policy is welcome news. The outline planning application to build 148 new homes in Kendal has been given the green light following a Public Inquiry in June this year. Planning Inspector Brendan Lyons approved plans for the site to the west of Oxenholme Road and he supported SLDC’s policy requirement that at least 35% of the new properties should be affordable housing.

Oakmere Homes Ltd had appealed against SLDC’s failure to reach a decision on the application within the prescribed period. Oakmere wanted to develop the site, near Westmorland General Hospital, but had proposed that only 10% of the homes be in an affordable category.The Inspector granted the appeal but upheld the council’s position that a requirement for 35% affordable dwellings is reasonable.

SLDC research shows that around 4,300 households in the district are in housing need and more than 3,000 people are looking for affordable homes in South Lakeland, with an average of 34 bids for every property.

Tim Farron’s Column

We recently heard that, in response to local campaigning, the Government has agreed to invest £12 million in electrifying the train line from Oxenholme to Windermere.

Now surely, if it makes sense to electrify the 10 miles between Oxenholme andWindermere, it must also make even more sense to electrify the line through Grange? If anything the case should be even stronger as the Furness line serves so much bigger a population.

Electrification brings with it a many benefits, it allows the use of faster, more efficient, greener and more reliable trains. This last point is probably the most important for those of us who regularly travel on the line to work or to catch planes and are forever facing delays and even cancellations. I need to declare a bit of an interest here as I use the line myself reasonably often as Arnside is a bit more convenient for Milnthorpe than Oxenholme and so can be easier for my wife,Rosie,to come and collect me from so I know how frustrating it can be to be standing waiting at Preston or Lancaster station.

There is a further benefit to electrification, it means more trains can use the line, bolting it even more firmly into the main train network and further protecting its future.An issue we all became more aware of with the recent threat to reduce the level of service on the line and remove the direct connection to Manchester Airport.

As a result, working with the Furness Line Action Group, I have written to the Office of the Rail Regulator, the organisation that advises the Government on the need for rail improvements,not simply to ask them to look at the case for electrifying the Lancaster to Barrow line but also to come up to South Lakeland to ride on the line to see for themselves how it operates. That should really give us a chance to sit down and make our case for the new investment in the line.

Our campaign to reduce petrol prices in South Lakeland took a step closer to success. The Government has announced the names of 10 more towns across the UK that will see a 5p reduction in their fuel duty. Most of the towns named were in Scotland but 2 were relatively local, Hawes over in the Dales and Kirkby in Furness. I am not completely sure of the economics of driving down the A590 to Kirkby to save 5p a litre in petrol but I doubt it makes much sense. However, this does show that the Government is taking seriously my claim that a car is a necessity for people who live in rural areas and so there should be a reduction in the fuel duty that they are asked to pay. I will keep pressing for a reduction across a much wider area.

Finally, as winter draws closer, I wanted to remind you of my campaign to reduce the number of potholes in Cumbria. We learned the other day that Cumbria is one of the five worst counties in the UK for the state of its roads. Last year the council paid out over £100,000 in compensation to motorists, at £50 a pothole repair that is 2,000 potholes that could have been filled.

In September I was invited to a presentation evening, during their rehearsal session, along with other people also receiving donations for their chosen charities. It was a very special occasion and on behalf of Eden House Children’s Hospice I received a donation of £50 from these very special young people, which will help to make a difference in the lives of the children and their families receiving care at Eden House, which is the only Children’s Hospice serving the whole of Cumbria.

It is nearly Panto time again in Grange (Oh, yes it is!) and I would like to remind you all that our wonderful Youth Theatre Group are presenting ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’ at Victoria Hall on December 5th, 6th, & 7th, starting at 7.30pm with a matinee performance also on the Saturday 7th, starting at 2.30pm.

Research by the charity reveals that clutter fills a room or more in one in five homes in Britain. Even

though 36% say they always try to keep unused or unwanted items to a minimum, 92% confess to clutter with a third admitting they have a lot of items they no longer want or need.

Future of the Promenade ‘Power Up Your Community’ registration extended The registration period for South Lakeland District Council’s “Power up Your Community” scheme has been extended by a month to 18 November.

The scheme which is being promoted by the council for the third time puts energy buying power into the hands of the community and offers people a chance to reduce their energy costs.The extension means that more people will now be able to register. Registration is the same as previous times, with people being able to sign up either online, by telephone or by visiting one of the council offices in Kendal, Ulverston and Windermere to give their current usage figures of gas and/or electricity. Registration will close at midnight on Monday 18th November.

The auction will now take place on Tuesday 19th November.This auction will allow energy companies to bid for the custom of those registered. An offer with a price for energy supply will be sent to everyone registered that is calculated on their usage and only then will people decide whether they wish to accept the winning supplier’s offer or not.

If you took part in the first switch and changed to Ovo, the fixed year contract will be coming to an end and you may want to re-register with the scheme to find the best offer for you.

But after correspondence and discussion the Group is not yet convinced that this reveals the full extent of the problems, nor that SLDC’s conclusions take the issue seriously enough.

have only been ‘repaired’ with a collar of concrete. In places the balustrade is so weakened that it can be pushed outwards and this is made worse by the continual breakdown of the connecting pipe-work. Urgent attention is needed.

The Promenade Structure and Surface: The surveyors dug trial pits under the Promenade surface but apparently found nothing untoward. Moreover they found no reason for, or solution to, the build- up of water pressure behind the sea wall at the southern end of the promenade – this is apparent from observed seepage. The only outcome to their ‘indepth’ investigation has been unnecessary damage due to the collapse of one in-filled hole and extensive cracking and sinking of another. And now the flooding of the south end underpass has started again...

SLDC seem only to have confirmed the comments made by officers of the Heritage Lottery Fund a few years ago – that SLDC was not demonstrating a continuing commitment to the Grange area or to its very supportive community. The 3Ps view remains that, in order to secure the long term future of the Promenade, repairs to the sea wall and extensive sections of the promenade surface must be carried out alongside any scheme for the Lido – the two depend on each other.

Important Information from GADAG Planning Application SL/2013/0691 – Berry Bank / Russell Armer Homes Ltd This detrimental application (for 42 unsuitable homes in an unsustainable location between Allthwaite Road & Carter Road) continues to exercise minds.

For those who have a penchant for this type of reading, there have been 176 very detailed postings on SLDC’s website, of which 101 are objections, 3 are in support, and the remainder are commentary from CCC, SLDC, and others. Grange Town Council objects on multiple issues.

In theory – a NEW date for your diaries – the hearing is currently scheduled for 28th November at a Planning Committee Meeting to be held in the Victoria Hall.

But (contrary to protocol), the hearing date is constantly being re-scheduled to accommodate the needs of the developers.

Fell Care Day success

There are 2 other applications pending – SL/2013/0840 (Low Fell Gate Caravan Park) and SL/2013/0848 (Land at Holme Lane, Allithwaite). These are almost equally controversial – the former because of the potential loss of green standing and biodiversity, the tarmacing of much of the site (leading to much greater risk of flood water run-off, not addressed comprehensively in the application, as objected to by GTC), and an increase in traffic flow on Cartmel Road.

The latter application relates to a small (initial?) development directly opposite to the junction of Holme Lane & Jack Hill, on the inside of the 90 degree bend.There will be two separate, new driveways at that point.

In terms of road safety (not to mention common sense)

Friends of the Lake District ’s mass volunteering event ‘Borrowdale Fell Care Day’ on 17th October saw more than 200 people take part in a day of intensive conservation work in the Borrowdale valley and fells.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall below the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

The Soroptimists in Grange have led the work on Grange being a Fairtrade Town since 2006 and have recently joined forces with the Chamber of Trade and Grange Primary School to reinvigorate the promotion of Grange as a Fairtrade Town.A Fairtrade town aims to boost awareness and understanding of trade issues, as well as promoting the purchase of Fairtrade products as a way that ordinary people can make a difference to the lives of producers.

The new committee will meet on the evening of the 4th November and would welcome interest from other groups or individuals. We would welcome interest from people wishing to be on the committee as well as from anyone who may be able to offer occasional help, at coffee mornings for example.

Community Led Plan - programme update Many thanks to all those who completed the community questionnaire, we have had a 35% response, which we consider a success. The Group are currently analysing your comments etc. and we expect to be able to feed back some outputs to the community within the next couple of months.

The Grange-over-Sands C of E Primary School have been busy making a contribution to the community plan and their work will be on show in the Library between 20th and 29th November.

We are also expecting to include some analysis from our Visitor Survey, Business Questionnaire and some results from the Community Questionnaire, so why not pop in to see what our children, visitors and the community have been saying.

1920s Furness Railway tickets The attached images show Furness Railway tourist tickets from the early 1900s. Despite their similarities the exception is that the one on the left is a through tourist ticket counterfoil, and the other is a through return ticket counterfoil.

Number 518 (on the left) was issued at Grange on August 27th, 1923, the destination being Eastbourne on the LBSCR (London, Brighton & South Coast Railway) by way of Carnforth and Euston. Cost of ticket: 70 Shillings return.

Number 64 was issued at Grange on 31st August, 1923, the destination being Bradford by way of Carnforth and the Midland Railway.

The cost of this return journey was 15 Shillings and ten pence.

Most people travelled by train in those days, and there were substantial goods and coal facilities at Grange which handled all the heavy stuff. It would have been a lot easier and safer crossing Main Street and Kents Bank Road in the 1920’s.

Grange man is oldest Open University graduate Clifford Dadson of Grange has become the oldest student to graduate from the Open University.

93-year-old Clifford has just gained a BA Open Degree in Arts.The former Engineer decided to take up the course after his wife passed away.

Clifford, who has proven that age is no barrier to academic success, hopes his achievement will encourage others to take a degree or diploma.

Service of Remembrance

Grange Town Council and the Grange branch of the Royal British Legion are holding a service of remembrance on Sunday 10th November, 2pm (standard and wreath bearers to assemble at 1:45pm), at St Paul’s Parish Church, Grange.

The service will be followed by a parade to the War Memorial lead by members of Flookburgh band for the laying of the wreaths and will then return to Victoria Hall for refreshments.There will also be a short service of remembrance on Monday 11th November at 10:50am.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI Fifty five members attended O c t o b e r ’ s m e e t i n g w e re entertained and fascinated by Fiona-Katie Roberts,a harpist,harp maker and composer who played different types of mostly Eastern influenced music. The percussion was provided by ‘bells’ (bottle tops) round her ankles. She explained that, with the advent of the pedal harp, instruments like hers with four rows of strings fell out of use. The next meeting is the AGM and lunch on Tuesday 5th November at 1pm.

Embroiderer’s Guild North Lonsdale Branch This month we held our AGM where we elected new committee members and re-elected old ones.The year included a variety of workshops,talks, social events and outings.

After the AGM we split into four groups to work on four different stitches. Mary, Maureen,Gillian and Joanna led the groups working on French knots, feather stitch, stem stitch and woven circles respectively.

Varying stitches is always popular with the members and all went home with a range of samples and more confidence in working the stitches practised. The next meeting is Tuesday 5th November when Sandra Walsh will be leading a workshop on a “Pixies Washing Line”. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. Witherslack WI The talk for the October meeting was “Haverigg Prison and Smokery” in which Morag Hopkins, aided by Mary Tyson, gave a vivid picture of how the prison functions and their part in it. They run the smoker, in which 8 prisoners at a time learn skills and discipline.

The smokery is now so successful that their produce goes all over the place to markets and shops. They hope to sell on line soon. They have permission to take prisoners with them to the markets and she urged people to talk to them. Most prisoners are reasonably local as it is so important for families to keep in touch. It is a Category C prison with 640 inmates.

While Morag was speaking Mary was cooking up some tasty morsels in the kitchen, and they were selling 8 different smoked foods. It was a most interesting insight into a world most people know little about. Next Month:Annual Meeting with supper.

Rotary Club Rotary Club have been busy this month, first with a great talk from our own Sue Wilkinson on the extraordinary life of the plant collector Reginald Farrer who lived in Clapham near Settle, and who discovered many of the plants which are common in our gardens to this day.

We had a visit from two of our fellow Rotarians from Kendal,Trevor Hughes and David Oates, who gave a fascinating talk supported by slides on their courageous venture when they took to their canoes and travelled from Kendal to London on the canals and waterways. They took on this venture with such precision raising more the than £10,000 for Rotary Charity.

Our own President Dr Richard Fell and Rotarian Ron Carey visited Morecambe Road School, Morecambe and presented to them 10 keyboard stands which Rotary Club of Grange-over-Sands donated.The Rotary District 1190 Quiz was Grange v Millom. The Quiz Master was Peter Clough from Grange who executed his role extremely well and was supported by his wife Ann.

Grange & District Lions Grange Lions have been busy this summer with our annual AM-AM golf tournament and summer raffle.

This raised £3,500 for St Mary’s Hospice.

A successful craft fair was held in Cartmel and the Lions joined in the fun of the Edwardian Day in the Park Gardens. Santa is busily dusting down his sleigh – dates to be announced for his trips around the villages. Societies and any organisations wishing to take part in this fundraising event, please contact Peter Clough on 32048. On the social side, much fun was had by all, both Lions family and friends alike.

Grange Golf Club Competitions are still ongoing and soon the Pro’s Winter Series will begin for men and ladies every Saturday.The ladies still have competitions each Thursday and there is a men’s Roll Up on a Tuesday & Thursday morning and a ladies Roll Up on a Tuesday morning before the men.

There are quite a few social activities to look forward to in the winter months.

There are Quiz Nights each month and we have our Annual Coffee Morning on 6th November from 10am – 4pm. Quiz night this month is on 13th November at 7pm with a break for food.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society In September, Andy Lowe gave a talk on vernacular (local) and polite (ideas coming into the area) buildings of the 16th to 18th century in Cumbria.Andy explained how buildings reflected the area around them with regard to the geology, economy, and tradition and how they sit in the landscape on selected sites, near water and in the sun. By looking at both the exterior and interior of the buildings clues can be found as to the status, date and how it was used.

Our final meeting of the year will be the AGM and a ‘bring and show a historical item’ evening at Cartmel Village Hall Supper Room on 21st November.

Grange Drama

On 25th September members had a fun afternoon exercising their drawing skills. Each of us had to choose 4 pictures from a selection of subjects which included ‘seascapes’, ‘still life’ and ‘people’. We were allowed 30 minutes to draw each one. The results were surprising and the final gallery show was impressive. We all agreed that our observational and drawing skills would benefit from more of this type of session.

On 9th October a large group of our members were treated to a wonderful day working with pastels, led by the ever enthusiastic Duncan Ibbotson who showed us a widespread selection of materials and techniques.We are an active, thriving society who would welcome new enthusiastic members. On Tuesday 19th November at 7.30pm, in the Institute building, Grange Drama are holding an open audition reading of two Chekhov one-act plays,‘The Bear’ and ‘The Proposal’ which it is hoped will be produced in May 2014.

Each has 3 characters;‘The Bear’ requires a young widow (anywhere between 25-35 years old), a slightly older, rough landowner, and an aged male servant; ‘The Proposal’ requires a male landowner (50-60 years old), his daughter (about 25 years old), another landowner (say, 40 years old).Ages are flexible in some cases.

It is intended to cast the plays separately so there is less demand on learning the lines and to make rehearsing easier.We are keenly looking for new talent, particularly the female ones. The servant and older landowner are the smaller but essential parts and would appeal to anyone wanting to try their hand at acting. If you would like to be considered for a part, come along for the reading.

Townswomen’s Guild Members celebrated Grange TG’s 67th Annual Birthday Lunch at Hampsfell House Hotel. A wonderful achievement to keep going so long!

Cartmel Fell & District Local History Society Stephen Miller, Communities O u t re a c h O f f i c e r f o r t h e Wordsworth Trust, gave an interesting talk, which complimented the current exhibition at Dove Cottage, titled “Dorothy Wordsworth: Wonders of the Everyday”.

Dorothy,the middle child,and only girl of five siblings,had a difficult childhood.Her mother died when she was six, she was separated from her brothers, and her father died when she was twelve. She lived, not always happily, with assorted relatives in various locations throughout the country.Her journals,letters, and other writings give us an impression of the woman, sister and friend, who was also an inspiration for William’s works.Without thought of fame, she caught in words, the every-day goings on of life, and raised them into a lasting world of wonders.

South Lakeland Mind (SLM) On World Mental Health Day (10th October) MP Tim Farron launched his campaign to improve services, funding and provision for vital mental health services.To celebrate the day we received donations from two local artists for silent auction. Andy Mortimer, famous in Grange and further afield for his Bayscapes photographs, kindly donated “Sunset Reflections – Morecambe Bay” which collected £65 at auction.

PROBUS Club On the 14th October Chris Abram gave an audio-visual presentation

entitled ‘Britain Remembers’. Chris had material covering several decades and he began by asking members to vote for the period they would most like to see.

The favoured decade was the fifties. This took members back to the Korean War, Suez Crisis, Cold War and spies, the Festival of Britain, the coronation and the ascent of Everest. Much of Chris’ material was from fifties newsreels which gave an accurate feeling of the period.

PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome. Trefoil Guild A visit to the Faroe Islands was shown with many slides to members, none of whom had ever been there.

NSPCC Last month the organisers of a charity concert held in the United Reformed Church, Grangeover-Sands, raised over £300, which was shared between the NSPCC and the Michael Spencer Fund.We would like to thank Sue Harrison, Victor Hindle and Sylvia Trohear, who both entertained and organised this event, and all those who attended and helped to make this a success.

We also received a donation of £141 in memory of Sue Marsden’s father and £130 from Rosemary Torrance who held a ‘Stop for Tea’ afternoon at her house.

We are most grateful to everybody for helping in this way to assist the work of the NSPCC. On Friday 22nd November, from 10am – 12 noon, the NSPCC will be holding their annual “Christmas Coffee Morning” in the Parish Hall. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a pleasant social time and maybe pick up a bargain or two from our Christmas stalls.Looking ahead, Mothers & Others are arranging a Christmas Concert on Tuesday 17th December at 7.30pm in the United reformed Church Hall with proceeds going to the NSPCC. We look forward to seeing supporters of the NSPCC at this event.

Newton & Field BroughtonWI On October 3rd Newton & Field Broughton WI were hosts at the Cartmel Valley Group meeting at which Ruth Rigg, Federation Chairperson, was also present. It was well attended.

Unfortunately Haverigg Prison Smokery were unable to attend. Their place was taken by two ladies who spoke about the Leeds Children’s Holiday Camp at Silverdale. The talk was both informative and touching and the members were clearly pleased to hear about this local facility.

The AGM took place on 9th October.

As Helen Cameron was away on holiday her place was taken by Margaret Fowles.

After the business meeting the members enjoyed a pie and peas supper provided by a local caterer. Ruth Rigg chaired the AGM and acted as teller for the president vote. The Institute had enjoyed a busy 60th anniversary year. Events included the evening cruise on LakeWindermere for 40 members and the StrawberryTea held at a member’s house. Members exhibited and helped at both Holker and Westmorland shows and supplied produce and manned the stall at Cartmel Show. The next meeting is onWednesday 13th November and is a talk on stargazing. If the night is clear members are advised to wear warm clothing as some of the time will be spent outdoors to get practical experience. It starts at 7.30pm at Lindale Village Hall.

Grange & District U3A Grange and District U3A is a thriving organisation with approximately 300 members. We hold a General Meeting on the 3rdTuesday of each month in the Victoria Hall, Main St., Grange-over-Sands when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over a coffee and biscuit.

The main activities take place in the interest groups (34 at the last count) which are co-ordinated by members. A number have been established in the last 12 months. The ‘Out and About’ Group thoroughly enjoyed a holiday in Ireland in September and the Digital Photography Group successfully hosted an exhibition of U3A photographs in Grange Library in early October. There is something for all tastes and interests in Grange U3A! Information about Grange and District U3A can be found on the website www. u3asites.org.uk/grange, in a ring binder in the resources room of the library and in leaflets at the Tourist information Office.

Grange Soroptimists Members enjoyed an educational and fun Manoeuvring Day, run by the Institute of Advanced Motorists at Cark Airfield in late September. The Club Charter celebrations were held at the Hampsfield House Hotel on October 5th with a dinner and entertaining story by member Carol Edwards who cleverly wove all club members’ names into the tale.

To mark World Food Day 15 members went on a visit to “Growing Well” which supports people to improve their mental wellbeing by involving them in a range of activities within the organic growing business.

Members dried off after a rainy visit with a meal at the Strickland Arms. Grange Natural History Society We s t a r t e d o u r W i n t e r programme of lectures last month with a talk by Tania Crockett on the ‘Nature Improvement Area’ scheme. This enables various organisations around the Morecambe Bay area to develop and improve their potential as wildlife sites.

Grange still has a population of Swifts visiting us every summer so we all very much enjoyed an illustrated talk by Tanya and Edmund Hoare on the life of these fascinating and mysterious birds. Sadly, their numbers are dwindling due to lack of suitable nesting sites so the speakers were able to explain how important it is to make provision for them in building projects and, most importantly, when having restoration work done on the roof.

Grange Fell Ladies’ Golf One of the highlights of our Ladies’ Section this year was our Lady Captain, Margaret Bebington, breaking the course record while in a mixed competition, the Golden Jubilee, where she scored a remarkable 76 gross.

A friendly match v. Barrow gave the Grange Fell Ladies a very pleasant day’s golf, with a happy round and refreshments. September saw Beatrice Hall win the nine-hole competition, while the Coronation Trophy was won byVeronica Hall with Margaret Bebington as runner-up.The Daily-Mail Foursomes qualifier was won by Ruth Waring and Jill Atkinson, followed by the Betty Hamer Michaelmas Trophy Competition, when Margaret Bebington was the winner ahead ofVeronca Hall. Veronica also won the October Stableford.

Allithwaite Bowling Club The final competition in Allithwaite Bowling Club’s calendar was the ‘President’s Day Competition’.This doubles competition brought a final with the pairs of Gill Balderstone & Derek Barton playing against Alan Balderstone & Bob Lear.

The final game over a set number of ends finished all square and entered into sudden death, the winners being Alan Balderstone & Bob Lear. Grange & District Art Society This month members were introduced to the art of ‘Botanical Illustration’ with Jean Grazier providing us with a selection of plants, leaves, buds and flowers and both demonstration and dialogue regarding the skills needed to be developed in order to excel at this painstaking pastime.

Grange Men’s Forum Members responded to the call to support the move to Abbot Hall Hotel and attendances have shown a welcome increase. Several new members have been enrolled and it is hoped more will follow.

Opening day speaker was Russell Barnes, chief engineer at the BBC`s Skelton transmitter. Skelton first went on air in 1943 and Mr Barnes described the major role it played in WWII as the Voice of Britain transmitting to Germany and to occupied Europe and later in the Cold War. Jersey-born Robin Collins told a harrowing tale of life on the Channel Island during the German occupation.

Mr Collins was evacuated on the day of the invasion in July 1940.

For those left behind conditions steadily worsened and a desperate shortage of food left the population on starvation level rations by 1944. Church News St Pauls Grange It was certainly a Harvest Festival day to remember at St Paul’s this year. The decorations were magnificent and the harvest gifts were abundant, all combining in making the church look absolutely beautiful. As we were celebrating all of God’s Gifts, a tent of Sukkot had been placed in front of the altar and the congregation were invited to come up and place inside the tent an article representing whatever gift they give to God’s work. The tent represented the type of abode the Israelites dwelt in during their forty years of exile in the desert. Sukkot is a seven day festival in the Jewish calendar and coincides with the Christian festival of thanking God for a plentiful harvest.

Later that same day a large crowd enjoyed the Harvest Songs of Praise followed by the annual Harvest tea. Once again our catering team excelled themselves with providing a wonderful meal. Following on

Grange Methodist Church Harvest Sun day at Grange Methodist Church was rather different from usual.

The window ledges were decorated in a familiar way, but the Toast Church became part of the service.

Pulling a very reluctant cow, (pantomime variety), into the church as it protested,‘It was happy in Cumbria and didn’t want to go to Africa’, was a feature. The young

from this Colin Milner reprised his role as auctioneer and auctioned off all the harvest produce that had been donated. All proceeds went to the AnglicanWorld Mission known as Us (formerly USPG) the international charity that St Paul’s supports.

The final lunchtime music concert for this year was very successful. Our musical director, Charles Edmondson, and flautist David Edmonds gave us such an entertaining and varied programme and we look forward to next year’s series of concerts.Charles is inviting people to come and join the choir for the annual Christmas Carol service in December. There is a list at the back of church including a timetable for rehearsals so if anyone feels like joining in the fun, please sign up.

kept the audience interested as she talked about her life as a missionary nurse in Zimbabwe. After retiring, and living part time there and part time inWray,she described the need for voluntary help in Zimbabwe.

Because of the inflation there, church workers were very short of funds and the needs were great.

Marion Briddock chaired the meeting, and reminded us that the next meeting would be led by our own Ivy Johnson who was planning a social time.

This year at St Paul’s we are following a tradition carried out throughout Europe and in Scandinavia and placing candles on the graves of our loved ones in Grange cemetery.

On Christmas Eve at 4pm the Rector, Nick Ash, will hold a short service of remembrance during which the candles will be lit and placed in position. The candles are specially designed for outdoor use on graves and have 5 burn days (although this is not guaranteed!)

If you would like to join us, then please call and see Linda Brown at the Parish Office in the Parish Hall (Thursday, 2-4 pm).

A limited supply has been purchased, and you can reserve one for £5. Please note that the candles are made from highly refined wax and specialised wick for dependable performance outdoors, with different melting points depending on external temperature. It is recommended that the candles are secured with weight or by pushing into grass to stop them toppling over. They can be placed inside a lantern or holder.

United Reformed Church Grange It is regrettably some while since news from the United Reformed Church in Grange made its way to Grange Now. However, this is a start to rectify that.

We have been very active all the time, although there have been changes. Our minister, Revd Eileen Sambrooks, retired three years ago and since then we have become part of the South Lakes Group of the URC along with Windermere, Kendal and Sedbergh, sharing Ministry with them. We are pleased to announce that the Revd Martyn Coe, from Greenwich, will be joining our Ministry Team in January and will be based in Grange. Although he will have to work throughout the group it will be good to have a Minister living in Grange again.

Through the summer we have had our regular Traveller’s Tales evenings and walks, and K Shoes Male Voice Choir gave a concert at the beginning of September. Of course, September is the month for Harvest and we had a lovely Harvest service on Sunday 22nd with a cheerful supper on Saturday 21st.This year we collected donations for the Eden House Children’s Hospice and also contributions for the food bank in Kendal.

Our shawl ministry, when our ladies get together to knit and pray is thriving.Their shawls are a comfort to the sick and sad.TheWomen’s Guild charity coffee morning on Friday 11th October was well supported.

Proceeds to the Goat Project and Bay Rescue. We enjoyed a happy evening with our Methodist Friends in our hall.We had a ‘Church Drive’ (like Beetle) and a light supper, and now know many more of them by name. A very positive step.

Preparations are now underway for the Christmas Services and the Christmas Coffee Morning.Watch this space. We’ll be back next month. Don’t forget, we always worship at 10.30am on Thursday and Sunday and everyone is welcome.

St Mary’s, Allithwaite

Church life has certainly moved up a gear since the summer break – starting with a Sunday lunch late “summer” barbeque in September, on what proved to be one of the wettest weekends of recent months!

Nevertheless an “indoor BBQ” cooked in the church kitchen was enjoyed almost as much though it did lack the smoky flavour which usually accompanies the real thing!

A few weeks later we enjoyed another Sunday lunch in church following our annual Harvest Thanksgiving service on October 6th. This service, in the beautifully decorated church, gave an opportunity to find out more about the Bishop’s harvest appeal which this year focuses on farmers in Kenya and deforestation inArgentina and the proceeds from the auction of harvest produce following the service are being given to this.

Home groups have started up again following the summer break and are discussing questions related to the theme of the Sunday morning services which are based on topics from Richard Foster’s book “Celebration of Discipline” and are providing much food for thought! During October the long awaited and updated new notice boards have been erected at the bottom of the drive and outside the entrance to the church which will hopefully provide the community and passers by with details of the services and other events at St Mary’s. The stand for a new Book of Remembrance has also been installed in the church to record the names of those who have been buried or whose ashes are interred in the churchyard and application for the names of loved ones to be included in this can be made on a form available in church or via the website (www.allithwaitechurch.org.uk).

We are already looking forward to Christmas and are planning an “Advent Ceilidh” in conjunction with Hope Church, Grange.This will be at the Allithwaite Community Centre on November 30th from 6.30-9.30 pm and tickets are available from both churches and from the Lantern Charity shop.As well as the usual Christmas services we are planning an Angel Festival to start from December 1st and culminating at the “Big Sing” on December 11th – more details next month.

St Charles A totally confused, amazed and bewildered fellow priest rang me the other day to see if I had a twin or was it really me on the silver screen! His comment – no wonder the film industry is in the state it is!

The ‘Good News of Jesus Christ’ is being much appreciated by all who make the effort.

The DVDs have to be worked at. There is much information packed into them.

The outside parish trips had a very pleasant final season’s outing to Holker. Again, the weather favoured us. After a slow start,

the Social Committee’s “Words and Wine” evening proved very successful.

There was nearly a major disaster in Church the other Sunday (no one fell aslepp!) – No, - the ceiling-hung Sanctuary lamp came tumbling down.Fortunately,Mass had ended and so no one was hurt. The glass didn’t even break and no candle grease went on the Sanctuary carpet! – The Lord looks after the Church cleaners!

More changes afoot – Deanery Conferences as normal get underway on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Paul Kelly, Cafood eco-parish representative, led an interesting discussion

– a good opening to the Conference season.

We are living in interesting times in the Diocese.A shortage of priests must lead to big changes in distribution of Churches and Masses. As the Bishop says: We must face reality before us. Don’t listen to gossip – a lady asked me “Is it true St Cuthbert’s is up for sale!” – if it is, it is news to me! Gossip and idle chatter is a dangerous thing.

6 months of success Six months on from her debut at the Netherwood Spa, Katie Louise Barnes spoke to Grange Now about the growth of her holistic and beauty therapy centre, Nirvana.

Nir vana has been warmly welcomed in Grange with local residents and hotel guests flocking to the sanctuary on their doorstep.

“Business has been going very well,” Katie told us, “I meet a lot of people who just want to escape from their fast-paced lives. I think they feel safe here.” And rightly so. Katie is a relaxed and genial presence and caring for others seems to come naturally to her.

Another successful year Local driving School “Drive to Arrive” has recently celebrated another successful year in business.

The company was established in 2004 by Peter Stas, on his retirement from the police, and was later joined by his daughter, Donna Watson. Both are high grade instructors, involved in all aspects of driver training.“Drive to Arrive” is the only driving school in the area to offer a choice of male or female instructors and manual or automatic cars.

Whilst teaching new drivers still forms a substantial part of the business, drivers of all ages and levels of experience are catered for. Over the last year an increasing amount of time has been spent assessing and advising older drivers under the Drive Safely for Longer Scheme, run by Cumbria Road Safety Partnership.

The scheme offers two FREE sessions to drivers who are over 65 years of age.

Cartmel & District AFC This season, Cartmel Football Club has launched a new third team. This decision was made because, in the last couple of years, there seem to have been a number of footballers in the area who are keen for a game but had nowhere to play, a problem which was solved when the pitch at the Allithwaite Playing Fields and Community Centre became vacant

following Grange United’s move back to their proper home ground at the end of last season.

Sponsorship of the new team has been provided by the King’s Arms Hotel in Cartmel, who now join Playdale Playgrounds in Haverthwaite and Cartmel Steeplechases as the club’s main shirt sponsors.Without the support of local businesses like these, there is little doubt that many clubs and associations would be unable to survive and we are extremely grateful to them for their generosity.

We have begun the term with a special emphasis on the children being independent so every child becomes or is already able to come in to school, sort out the bags, coats etc. and work alone.

We have also introduced Class Surgeries and are pleased that the sessions appear to be quite important and welcomed by many parents. In Nursery this term we have done our exciting topics: ‘All About Me’, ‘Me and My Family’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

Class 4 and 3 enjoyed taking part in collaborative shelter building.With a mixture of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, each small group were given a tent to put up.The problem solving focused on how to construct a tent and needed effective teamwork,communication and practical skills.

Masquerade A new fun drama group has started at Victoria Hall in Grange – Masquerade.

Masquerade’s aim is to build children’s confidence in fun and practical ways, in a safe environment. Children aged 9-12 are invited to develop creative and critical skills, take part in role play, drama games, mime, improvisation, mask

solving activities, kayaking and completing an obstacle course.

Class 1 have been learning all about their bodies and senses and this included a visit to the doctors.

Years 2 and 3 are currently thinking about settlements and have been enjoying reading the story ‘UG’ by Raymond Briggs; they are planning a visit to Hadrian’sWall in November. Class 3 have been reading ‘There’s a boy in the Girls Bathroom’ and together with Class 4 are learning all about Africa.

Our Friends of the School have been busy raising money and have purchased 16 I-PADS for use in the classrooms.We are very fortunate

to have such great support.Their next event will be a children’s disco for Children in Need.

We have enjoyed sporting success winning the cluster High Fives Netball tournament. Each Tuesday the children have had the opportunity to go Mountain Biking after school in the local area.

Our Breakfast Club and After School club wraparound care facility is going from strength to strength and a large investment in resources including a TV and Wii as well as a range of toys and craft activities are ensuring all our children have fun.

Year 3 and 4 pupils had a star opportunity to explore the space and the planets without even leaving the comfort of their classroom! Thanks to the team from Daresbury Science Park and their portable planetarium - provided by Science and Technology Council - children had the universe brought to them.

They enjoyed learning about outer space, the solar system and constellations. The session was very successful and it was part of the science curriculum - and, what’s more, a fun activity.

This term we also welcomed Leven Valley Primary School to play a football match splendidly supported by parents, staff and pupils of both schools. The teams played some great football, communicated and passed well and the entertaining match finished 10 - 0. All the players were a credit to their schools and

conducted themselves in a very sportsmanlike manner. We look forward to continued success with a promising side.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the Coffee Morning helping to raise £250 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

FOFS provided teas and coffees; parents had brought many delicious cakes and biscuits.

Sunday 10th November will be our next Groundforce Day and we hope again that a lot of adult helpers turn up and do a great job as we did last time. Children have requested a new “Quiet Space” in the grounds.

Lindale Pre-School Nursery

Small Wonders achieves excellent Ofsted report

It has been a busy half-term at the Nursery, with children enjoying a transport topic and investigating different ways to travel. Their research led them on a trip from Lindale to Cartmel on the circular 532 bus, with a break and a play at the playground before returning. Our thanks to our friendly bus driver who helped to make the trip such a success!The last few weeks have encouraged children to think about autumn and Harvest activities, thinking in particular about the work of farms at this time of year.

The next big project at the Nursery is to revamp the garden area at the front of the building, adding things like a willow den, mud kitchen, outdoor music area and planters.

This will give children much more to do in the fresh air, and if we are able to add a small roof, we hope to get them outside whatever the weather! Fundraising for the improvements started in earnest with a very successful band night at the Keg & Kitchen in Grange in October, featuring two brilliant local bands and raising around £550.

We are very grateful to Hadwins for their sponsorship and to Matt and Tracy at the Keg & Kitchen for their support.

The next Nursery fundraiser will be our annual Clothes and Toy Sale, to be held on Saturday 16 November from 10am to 12 noon at Lindale Village Hall. It’s a great opportunity to pick up new toys and clothes for your children and dispose of unwanted ones of your own. Admission is just £1, to include tea or coffee and biscuits, and there will be home-made cakes to buy plus a raffle.

Small Wonders Child Care based in Grange a few minutes walk from Grange Primary School with whom they have close working links, has achieved an ‘Outstanding in allAreas ‘ Ofsted award following an inspection in August.

A few weeks later they received a letter from her Majesty’s Chief Inspector who wrote; “The judgement of outstanding means that you are exceptional and significant elements of your work are exemplary. I do not under estimate the considerable hard work, expertise and commitment it takes to achieve outstanding

provider status.”

No wonder Small Wonders are thrilled!

Proprietor Julie Stonier told Grange Now; ”We have been looking after children from six months to eleven years all year round since 2009 and provide extensive opportunities for children to develop, explore and learn inside and out, teaching them valuable independence skills and promoting their self confidence and self esteem.” Julie also ensures the children has lots of fun, affection and cuddles. Cartmel Priory School Charlotte Pyne, a pupil at Cartmel Priory School, has become one of the stars of the highly successful Lakes International Comic Art Festival.

Her work was selected by internationallyacclaimed comic artists as being the winner of the age 15 category.

him. Charlotte was fascinated by this tale and having seen the illustrations of Brian Selznick with their intricate cross-hatching and depictions of light and dark, she quickly set to work.

in school and Charlotte decided this was a perfect way to present her 20 panel illustration.

Science and the natural world have been among the topics high on the agenda this term at Lindale CE Primary School.

Late September saw an exciting visit from ‘Zoo Lab’, giving children the chance to see and handle all sorts of creatures including snakes and spiders! Older children became ‘Eco Investigators’ for the day, looking at the impact of humans and climate change on creatures around the world,and younger ones have learned about different minibeasts and their habitats. Class 2 meanwhile visited Grange School to experience the giant inflatable planetarium ‘Star Lab’, picking up knowledge about the stars and planets.

The school’s science club continues to be very popular, with children enjoying lots of hands-on activities and getting interested in all aspects of science. The school’s club leader, Mrs Carr, will soon be taking part in a specialist science course at the National Science Learning Centre in York, which will give her even more

great ideas for science activities, including outdoor adventures and ICT-linked work.

The last few weeks of half-term have brought activities including a trip to the Comic Art festival at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre and Harvest celebrations. November will see some activities to raise money for Children in Need and the school’s annual remembrance service at the war memorial in Lindal.

You might be forgiven for thinking that running is the new Pilates craze given the number of ladies who are now seen regularly running up and down Grange Promenade, spurred on by our NEW and very successful Learn to Run courses, delivered by Sue Hotchkiss. As a result of the large take up we are running additional courses after the half term, with another beginner’s course planned as well as continuation classes to look at different aspects of running such as trail running etc. If you wish to reserve your place, please call us.

November is probably the busiest month for courses so there is plenty to choose from to cater for all tastes and levels of ability.We still have some spaces on the Willow Weaving course on 9th November which is run at Castle Head Field Centre. After the positive feedback and support received for our dementia class, we are running a series of one day workshops on this heartbreaking but increasingly important subject on the 16th November, as well as an introduction to Neuro Lingusitic Programming. Joan Bentley will be running her Christmas Flower Arranging course on 23rd November at Allithwaite Primary School (please note change of venue). If you struggle with your back why not enrol on the forthcoming ‘Alexander technique and your computer’ course on the 16th November, which looks at how your office might be contributing to your problems and how to overcome this as we become more allied to our technology.

We are delighted with the large take up of computer classes this year. Starting immediately after the half term is the Introduction to Social Media class on 5th November. The Get to grips with your iPad and iPhone class starting the end of November is now full but we also have an additional course starting on 6th November for 3 weeks to cope with demand so please call us to book your place. We also have a number of Saturday workshops coming up including Excel for Beginners on the 9th November.

On Tuesday 29th October between 10am and 4pm (during the half term break) we have Creative Crafts for Kids – Big and Little! This one day workshop for children, with an accompanying adult, is suitable for children aged five years and above. A great opportunity to learn some new creative skills together in a fun and relaxing atmosphere when I’m sure many parents are stuck for activity ideas.
