May I start by wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year; and a huge thank you for all the positive feedback we receive in respect of the articles we write. As one year comes to a close it is a good opportunity to look back over the previous twelve months and reflect on what has happened to ones finances in light of the ever changing economy. At IIA, we also review the year that has past. A large proportion of new clients we have had the pleasure to work with during 2013 are those with existing investments, pensions, ISAs etc that now require professional ongoing management. Financial markets never sit still but constantly move and evolve. In the same way, your investments will not remain static – everyday volatility will not only affect your portfolio’s overall value, it will also alter the balance of assets within it; what you originally invested in may look quite different today as companies change focus and investment funds re-align their strategies. Just working out the ideal structure of your investments on ‘day one’
As I am sure you have heard, Mary Ann Best the Founding Editor of Grange Now, has decided it’s time for a well earned retirement. The good news is that she’ll be continuing to help with the production of Grange Now for some time to come. I wish Mary Ann all the very best for a long and enjoyable retirement, and of course, I appreciate her support in helping me to ‘learn the ropes’. Regular visitors to the Grange Now office will have noticed a new face over the last couple of months. May I introduce isn’t enough – instead, it is vital to keep an eye on your portfolio to make sure it continues to meet your long-term needs. Of course, your life is unlikely to stand still either. Fun Fund in his name begun by his mum, Joanne, following the theft of his specially adapted trike last Christmas. Harrison’s Fun Fund aims to bring enjoyment to the lives of disabled children and the Holmes tapped into their resources to purchase a specially adapted £300 bike for Harrison. In an interview with another publication, mum Rebecca Woodward said: “The bike will give [Harrison] the chance to get some fresh air and play outside, because he can’t ride a two-wheeler. The help we get from charities like the Fun Fund and Millom Parents & Carers Disability Group is massively important because otherwise we would just be stuck at home with Josh.” Donations can be made to the fun fund through Mrs Holmes on 01229 43264.
Tesco coming to Grange? Grange Now has learned of a possible new Tesco Express store in Grange.The supermarket giant is believed to be considering several sites, one of which is the previous Royal British Legion building on Kents Bank Road. Cllr.Tom Harvey acknowledged the potential for controversy, saying: “What concerns me most is how our already clogged streets would cope with multiple deliveries every week from big vehicles and increased traffic from shoppers.”

Severe implications for Grange area Everyone will be aware from TV and the press that SLDC’s Land Allocation Plan has been passed as ‘sound’ by the Planning Inspectorate. The plan provides for the building of over 700 houses throughout the vicinity between now and 2025. Excluding the 43 proposed ‘affordable’ dwellings at Berners, there will be about 60 on Trickett’s field (next to the playing fields), about 50 or more on 2 pieces of open land at the lower

We may defend our greenfield sites against the onslaught of SLDC’s local development plan (LDF) but without one we could be worse off. Nationwide councils were asked to decide how many homes were needed and identify land to build on whilst consulting residents’ opinions. If councils fail to draw up plans in conjunction with residents then developers
end of Cartmel Road, 42 [see below] at Berry Bank and anything up to 200+ on the green fields between the end of Carter Road and Kirkhead Road, dipping down the hill as far as Greaves Wood Road. Double yellows outside school Now winter is almost here more children will be driven to and from their primary schools instead of walking. Most senior school pupils travel on the special school bus services, but if not are more likely to be taken by car than walk to school. So be aware that school-run parking is being monitored by some councils to catch parents who park illegally on double yellow lines and prohibited stretches outside schools. South Lakeland District Council is not as yet using
CCTV to catch offenders but, if it proves successful in the areas it is being trialled, then possibly it may do. If so it could be a lucrative way of raising revenue as Grange Now discovered when driving by local schools at dropping off/picking up times. Whilst most parents park responsibly, some don’t. One 4x4 was parked half on the pavement, straddling double yellows, outside one school and there were other miscreants outside other schools. We won’t name and photograph but please park legally children’s lives are at stake after all! They should have a

It is not driven by housing need, nor any green agenda, nor by altruism (14 ‘affordable’). Bay Community Singers Bay Community Singers now has 40 members and
we enjoy singing together under Jane Thedham’s guidance. Westmorland Orchestra
The Westmorland Orchestra’s December concert opens with a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, in the year marking the 60th anniversary of her coronation. It is the stirring march Orb and Sceptre, commissioned by the Arts Council from William Walton for performance in Westminster Abbey during the ceremony in 1953. Conductor Richard Howarth will then leave the platform to make way for Ian Thompson, musical director of Kendal South Choir, who will conduct the assembled forces in Vaughan Williams’ work Towards the Unknown Region. Ian Thompson is a versatile musician: although spending much of his professional life as a singer, he is an accomplished harpsichordist, organist and conductor. Since moving to Cumbria in 1995 he has become much involved in the regional musical scene. In his fifties Elgar wrote two suites entitled The Wand of Youth,

Cartmel Choral Society’s Christmas Concert Cartmel Choral Society’s annual Christmas concert will take place in Cartmel Priory on Saturday 21st December at 7:30pm in Cartmel Priory. Under the musical direction of Adrian Self, and accompanied on the organ and piano by Andy Plowman, audience members will be invited to join in with singing a popular mix of Christmas carols. The choir will also be performing Haydn’s Te Deum, Bob Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass and seasonal pieces by John Rutter, Walford Davies,William Matthias, Reginald Spofforth and Tchaikovsky. Rotary Club October saw us hosting an International Evening at the attended by members of various clubs in Distrcit 1190. H o s t e d by D r S o o nu Verghese we listened to some very thought provoking presentations, Soonu told us about the fight against Malaria in Tanzania. We also learned about the excellent work in Nepal and links established through the Rotary Club of Corkha and their local school and the provision of fresh water and toilets for schools in Africa.

Rotary have donated £250 to Cartmel Priory School for the YOUNG ENTERPRISE PROJECT. Rotarian Ken Thompson gave an interesting JOB Talk on how after working for Littlewood Stores for most of his working life decided to move to Froome where he ran the Post Office for several years until he retired and moved to Grange.This month Rotarian Peter Watson gave an excellent talk on the Met Office where he worked until he retired. He explained to us how the weather is forecast and weather warnings are indicated.
Furness line electrification
Local MP Tim Farron shows support for Lakes success On 7th November MP Tim Farron asked the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, to electrify the Furness line. Mr Farron
said he wanted to build on the Lakes line success and try to improve the Furness Line. “We need to protect the through trains to Manchester and work to increase capacity on the line. I will keep working with campaigners and other local MPs to do all we can to improve the line.” After lobbying and working with the Lakes Line Users Group, Mr Farron secured agreement to conduct a

On National Older People’s Day, 1st October, the Victoria Hall hosted an electric blanket safety testing day. Led by Trading Standards, this multi-agency safety initiative brought together Cumbria County
Council, Age UK South Lakeland, the fire service and neighbourhood watch to improve older people’s safety in their homes. According to Steve Jones of Trading Standards, who carried out the checks, around 1000 blankets were

Grange neighbourhood watch and Age UK were on hand to ensure that other issues relating to older people’s safety and wellbeing in their homes, which might otherwise have gone under the radar, have been noted and support provided. The team hope to engage in future multi-agency events of this kind to further protect the increasingly older population in Cumbria.

We are delighted to report that one of our Grange readers has completed the 2013 North West Public Libraries Reading Rewards Challenge and won the prize for Cumbria. The target was to read at least 8 books in 8 categories which encouraged readers to try something new. The Challenge runs from June to October each year so you can sign up next Summer and see if you are up to the challenge. North Lonsdale Embroiderer’s Guild will be displaying a range of their work in the Library from 2nd to 23rd December. They will also be having a ‘Stitch In’ from 10 am to 3 pm on Friday 6th December – come along to find out what they do and have a go. Rhymetime with stories and songs for pre-school children and their carers will be from 10
Book Shelf to 10.30 am on 2nd and 16th December, so come along and join in the fun! Grange Toy Library will be merging in 2014 with Cumbria Library Service to provide PreSchool, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 sacks in a new format. Christmas homelessness fears During November Shelter launched an emergency a ppeal a fter of ficial figures revealed that 922 children in the North West are homeless and in temporary accommodation. The charity warns that this Christmas morning they face waking up without a home of their own, with many living in cramped and difficult conditions in emergency hostels or B&Bs.
Across Britain the charity warns that there are 80,000 children who will be homeless this Christmas. For families whose emergency housing is a bed and breakfast – the numbers of which now stand at a ten year high – this Christmas will be particularly bleak. With homelessness rising, the charity is bracing itself for a surge in demand for its advice services and launching an emergency

Welcome to our Autumn newsletter. We have a new activities organiser, Andrew Bond, who started in September. Whilst we waited for him to start, our staff got heavily involved in activities and thoroughly enjoyed spending more time with residents.

After the excitement of the Strawberry Fete, it was nice to get back to normal with Margaret Chapman coming on Tuesday mornings to do music to movement with residents. She also comes back on Tuesday afternoons to do hand massages for residents and returns on Thursday mornings to play games and do quizzes with residents. Our singing group with Jean, Margaret and Elaine continued every Thursday afternoon.I am always grateful for their enthusiasm and support in coming to The Old Vicarage, the residents love singing with them.

During August, we had a number of baking sessions. Each time the residents made some fairy cakes, which of course then had to be eaten after tea. We used up all the icing, hundreds & thousands and colours we could find. A sweet tooth defeats savoury every time!

Andrew Bond, our new activities oragniser started this month. He has 6 years experience working in Barrow as an activities organiser.
In the middle of the month, Folksy Theatre returned with their “Lets face the music and dance” show, they made us laugh and cry and we look forward to their return.

Sarah Loy went on maternity leave in August. She has since had a beautiful boy called Joseph. Returning to us is Laura Hodgson, who is also our staff member of the season. Amy Killinger has completed her NVQ level 2 in care and Dawn Barnes after a lot of hard work has finished her NVQ level 3.

We did some indoor and outdoor gardening towards the end of the month, with many of the residents taking part. We discovered that Ellen used to do the flower arranging at Cartmel Priory and she was able to advise us how on to do it.A few days later Kathleen & Alice and Sue and Amy took advantage of the amazing weather and made lots of hanging flower baskets. Sue showed a lot of ingenuity in choosing where to place them!

We swopped around our dining room and lounge in September, and bought 2 new dining suites. The new dining room is now quieter with great views into the garden. Andrew has lunch with the residents, sitting with residents who like some conversation with their meal. The old dining room has now opened up as a second sitting room.

Fire service cuts? The Fire Brigades Union North West has warned of the consequences of reports that Cumbria County Council’s budget consultation could see the closure of a retained fire station and the loss of 5 fire engines and 40 retained firefighters. FBU NW claimed that emergency response times will be slowed, leading to more deaths and injuries as a result of a reduced ability to deal with fire, floods, traffic incidents and other emergencies. The spokesperson stressed that:“Every firefighter, whether retained or whole-time, plays a crucial role in protecting public safety: there are no ‘backroom’ savings to be made.” Fire and rescue service bosses said they were considering the removal of one of the two fire engines based at each of five stations in the county – Penrith,Whitehaven,Workington, Maryport and Kendal - as part of a £500,000 budget cut faced by the service. Cumbria’s chief fire officer, Dominic Harrison, has also taken voluntary redundancy. His responsibilities will now be shared between the remaining four directors.

Grange First Responders We held our ninth annual meeting on November 18 and heard from Team Leader Judith Newton about the range of activities during the year. The team of responders has 12 members who have had an outstanding successful year attending 266 calls of which the majority (128) were in Grange and the remainder in descending order were in Flookburgh (65), Cartmel (27),Allithwaite (27), Field Broughton (13) and Lindale (12). Two of our most experienced responders have qualified as Enhanced First Responders with a third currently undergoing training. Since Januar y they have responded to 122 calls making the total for this year 388. This is a phenomenal outcome making the Grange and District team one of the busiest in Cumbria. In addition Judith Newton, Peter Gillespie and Susan and Alec Lishman have
received commendations from the North West Ambulance Service in recognition of their outstanding professionalism. Elsewhere in this edition you may have seen that Grange Drama donated the proceeds of the raffles held at their recent production. We are grateful to them for supporting the scheme and appreciate the generosity of the playgoers who raised a magnificent £362. In addition we have received an unexpected donation of £50 from the members of Newton and Field Broughton WI towards our defibrillator fund. Surprise donations like this keep our spirits up and are wonderful demonstrations of the local community’s high regard for the quality of service from our front line volunteers. I hope that having learnt a little of what we have done through the year may inspire someone who would like to join us either as a community first responder or as a member of
the management committee. No Cold Calling Zone The latest ‘No Cold Calling Zone’ was launched at Fairfield in Flookburgh in October. This is the first zone established in Flookburgh and will provide a significant deterrent to rogue traders and bogus callers. Doorstep Crime is a serious concern in Cumbria with over 250 reported incidents reported in 2012. There is also a concern that incidents tend to be under-reported due to fear or embarrassment. The aim is to place
power in the residents’ hands, particularly the elderly, giving them the confidence to say NO to bogus callers, rogue traders, bogus officials and thieves. Identified by signs at the entrance to Fairfield, it gives a clear signal that rogue traders are not welcome and that householders will not buy on the doorstep. Additionally residents will be provided with a door sticker which states that the resident does not wish to receive cold calls to their home. To
the side of the sticker is a telephone number for the resident to report any incidents. Howard Firth, Police Community Support Office said: “We are pleased to be part of this multi-agency partnership working, which aims to benefit the community. Anyone who has information about doorstep crime is encouraged to contact Tr a d i n g S t a n d a r d s via Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline 08454 040506 or report the matter to Cumbria Police on 101.
District Report
Over the past couple of weeks you would have seen the demolition of the Berners pool, and maybe with mixed emotions. We have to look forward and to the development of the 40 or so properties which will provide much need social/affordable housing for LOCAL PEOPLE who can live near family and support the very good local schools, churches and businesses so grange can remain a vibrant place to live. The Lido is still a contentious issue and SLDC and the bidding company for the lottery funding gave a presentation at the Victoria Hall. Their idea was simple: an outdoor Lido pool with a number of associated facilities around it to provide an income stream year round, this was described as the best chance of achieving Heritage Lottery Funding. I have challenged the officers at SLDC to explain and the answer is that we probably have to go down this route,so the lottery funding group are in the process of
doing a feasibility study to see if it can work. When this is exhausted we can look at the ideas which can work and be a success. I attended a site meeting at Bailey crossing with network rail with a view to closing the gates. I know this is a contentious issue but we have to look at safety first. I will support the closure with the re-routeing of the foot path to go through the underpass and on to the promenade although I appreciate some colleagues, such as Cllr. Harvey, and manyTown Councillors do not share this view. Councillor Harvey and I have £1,000 each from the New Homes Bonus to spend in Grange and we would like suggestions as to where this money could be invested to help the local people,but it has to be match funded and for capital expenditure – i.e. not for the running costs of something. public swimming pool and £3.5m of public money was down the drain. They add that the architect ‘of this little masterpiece’, Stephen Hodder, is now serving as president of the RIBA.
Deputy Mayor’s Report
There were two dates in my diary this month: November 10th and 11th. November 10th was a perfect day weather-wise for the annual town commemoration of those who gave their lives in conflict. After a very well attended and moving service at St Paul’s Church we marched down Main Street to the Ornamental Gardens and the War Memorial, for the laying of wreaths and a short service. The sun shone, the sky was blue and the turnout was amazing. The following day, Armistice Day, dawned wet and cold. Those of us gathered at the War Memorial huddled under umbrellas to observe two minutes silence and hear the plaintive call of the Last Post, followed by prayers for the fallen. The atmosphere was sombre and so was the weather. These ceremonies give plenty of time for thoughts and memories. It struck me that there are so many names not on memorials anywhere – those who were horrendously injured both mentally and physically, but survived, their lives and often those of their families, blighted forever. And this still goes on now. We see all too graphically on our televisions and in our newspapers, those who are still sacrificing their youth and their health for the sake of their country. County Matters As you will have seen in the press recently the County Council have published their Budget Consultation for next year. This consultation ends on the 20th January 2014 and I would like everyone to look closely at proposition 24 which would cease to subsidise bus services. This will have a marked effect on our rural bus services as most will have some form of subsidy from the County at present. I will urge everyone to fill in the consultation document

Firstly, a bit of an update on the Furness line electrification. I was called to ask a question of the Transport Minister in Parliament the other day and took the opportunity to ask him if he consider supporting the case for electrification. His response was quite positive, he said he was aware of the desire for the line to be upgraded and that he would look into our case. So it is now up to us to produce a persuasive case, something that I am sure, with the help of the Furness Line Action Group, we are more than capable of delivering. One of the issues that has been causing a lot of people to get in touch with me is street lighting in villages. Much of this is provided by lights that are attached to the poles and pylons owned by BT and Electricity Northwest. In response to the death of a BT employee working on one of these poles Electricity Northwest announced that

My gums bleed when I brush my teeth, does this mean that I have gum disease? Gum disease is inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria in plaque which, if not removed through daily brushing and flossing, can build up.The bacteria can inflame your gums, eventually extending to underlying tissues and the bone that support the teeth.This can cause teeth to become loose or fall out. Gum disease is extremely common and affects 3 out of 4 adults over the age of 35 in the UK. 83% of people show signs of gum disease. Gum disease isn’t just something that happens later in life, more than half of teenagers show some symptoms. Smoking causes 50% of all cases of gum disease in the UK.Signs
whenever a pole or pylon they were responsible for needed replacing they would take the opportunity to remove the light. As a result we face the very real possibility of lots of small villages being cast into darkness with massive safety issues. I submitted a motion to the House of Commons condemning this decision by Electricity Northwest and asking them to change their minds. Within a couple of days I received a letter from BT saying that they promised not to remove lights from any poles that they were responsible for, either outright or jointly with other companies. So that just left Electricity Northwest. Well I have now heard from them and they have agreed to provide a fund of £250,000 for Cumbria to address any issues that their decision has caused. This is good but to be honest not good enough. This is for the whole of Cumbria and Eden District council alone estimates that it would need more than £1 million to replace all the lights that are at risk in their area. I still don’t understand why only Electricity Northwest, of all the companies that use poles
Council will be opposing these propositions and if you agree please fill in the consultation document before the 20th January. Grange Chess Club Grange Chess Club played their first game in Cumbria’s Premier Division (for many moons and possibly ever. Anyone have records of a previous campaign?) last month. A visit to Egremont was very successful as Grange A scored three wins and one draw against the SASRA A team and were temporarily top of the league! Meanwhile Grange B team also made an excellent start to the campaign with two wins in the second Division South with new member Phil MacDonald star performer with two wins out of two. Grange Junior chess club is recruiting new starters to the game at 4-30pm on Tuesday evenings at the Commodore. Those interested should contact Hilary Austin on 32322. The annual Xmas Lightning Chess event is scheduled for Monday evening, December 23rd, 7pm, at the Commodore. Mince Pies and special festive prizes.All welcome free to enter on the night.

At a very well attended AGM, the committee prepared and served a lunch of baked potatoes with salad and various fillings followed by delicious fruit brulées. Members,in small groups, were encouraged to discuss and select ‘An InspiringWoman’ and share the outcome of their discussions with the meeting. Helen Keller and Malala were amongst famous women included, but the majority were most inspired by their own family members. The next meeting will be at 2pm in the Community Centre on Tuesday December 3rd. In other news, one of the two teams from Allithwaite & Cartmel WI were winners in the recent Federation quiz at the Gilpin Bridge Hotel, the other team taking fourth place.

John Parker gave us a welcome travelogue with blue skies and blue seas around the Greek Islands at our November meeting. Remembrance Day was commemorated with our Vice Chairman, Liz Scott, laying the wreath at the War Memorial. Other members were in support on what was a glorious sunny day. Our next meeting is Thursday December 12th at 2pm when Joan Bentley will be doing one of her wonderful Christmas flower arrangements. Everyone is welcome to come to St Charles’ Church room. On the 11th November John Butcher gave an illustrated talk entitled ‘The Thirlmere Hundreds’. The Hundreds in the title referred to the approximate length of time the reservoir had existed, the distance to Manchester and the annual rainfall of the area.
John showed photos of the building of the dam and the subsequent tunnelling required.This amazing feat of engineering involved tunnelling under Dunmail Raise and installing a line of tunnels and pipes which delivered water to Manchester using only the power of gravity. John completed his talk with a description of recent work and surveys. PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. New members are always welcome. The 89th Annual Meeting took place with President Ann Walshaw in the chair. She was re-elected, as was Secretary Pauline Hodgson and Treasurer Shirley Christie. Two new members have joined the committee. The institute had a successful year with members involved in many activities and some excellent speakers.The membership stands at 22. Lin Bowman, in her report on the Council Meeting, said it was excellent with very good speakers. The Federation now has 2,139 members and 2 new WIs have been formed. The team for the quiz at the Gilpin Bridge venue had not done well but enjoyed the evening.The tea outing to Kitridding Farm was good and the group meeting at Brigsteer very interesting. Grange Lecture Society
The Society was privileged on 29th October to be addressed by Professor Joyce Hill, Emeritus Professor of Medieval Literature at Leeds University. In an illustrated talk,of the life and achievements of The Venerable Bede (c.673-735), the Jarrow monk regarded as one of the leading scholars of early medieval Europe. We learnt how in the monastery library at Jarrow Bede imbibed from boyhood the works of ancient classical as well as early Christian writers,and himself became the author of a wide range of scholarly works written in Latin, among them the Ecclesiastical History of the English People for which he is best known.We learnt too, among much else,why Bede was calledThe Venerable – not an official title apparently, but simply the apt adjective chosen to complete the metre on his Latin epitaph. Perhaps the best way of following this fine lecture was with something totally different, and soprano Kathy Lewis duly provided it when she returned on 12th November with more entertaining stories of her time as a singer on cruise liners. On 3rd December at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall geologist David Edwards will speak about ‘Our Energy Future’.

A friendship meeting was held at the beginning of November where two members of staff at Cartmel Priory comprehensive school were invited to judge the peace posters done by some of their pupils.This is a national competition designed to foster awareness of world peace in young people. £100 was donated to the art department by the Lions and the two winners have been entered into the national competition.At the same meeting we completed our Boxes of Hope for Romania.Santa has dusted off his sleigh and will be touring the area on the following dates so have your letters for Lapland ready: 9th & 10th Dec - lower Grange & town centre; 11th Dec - Flookbrough & Ravenstown; 13th Dec - Cartmel square & Cark village; 16th Dec - Grange Fell & Lindale; 17th Dec – Allithwaite. Grange & District Photographic Society In November we welcomed nature specialists Brian and Sophia Fuller of “WildTalks” presenting their excellent Year of Nature, Richard Speirs DPAGB APAGB with a fascinating and humorous evening of personal images, and Sheila Davies DPAGB with a collection of AV’s from around the world. To round off the month members’ work went under the spotlight with our annual projected images competition. Only two meetings in December: on the 2nd Chairman Malcolm Kimber presents ‘The Dales Way’, his illustrated account of walking the Dales High Way from Skipton to Appleby; on the 9th Nick Withers, Wilkinson’s Cameras, Kendal, brings up to date news of latest developments in equipment together with some seasonal special offers. We extend seasonal greetings to all readers and hope to see you in the second half of our season which resumes on 13th January with something special to start the New Year. Grange Golf Club The Pro’s winter comps on a Saturday are now ongoing, anyone is welcome to join in, men and ladies. The ladies annual coffee morning was held on Wednesday 6th November when records were broken again because at total of £1,270 was raised for club funds in just two hours.The ladies all worked very hard to make this a very successful event and thanks go to all the ladies and everyone that came and took part in the event. Another successful quiz night was held on 13th November and a good supper was served to complete the evening.The next Quiz Night is on Wednesday 18th December which is open to all, members and visitors, just let us know if you intend to come along and we can make sure there is supper for all. Entrance is £6 each, which includes supper.
Flookburgh Village Hall

As 2014 approaches, we at the Hall have been remembering 2013 – what a memorable year that was. The kitchen has a new domestic water boiler and a new cooker range. The free standing central heating boiler has been replaced with a wall mounted boiler. All this has been achieved by the tireless work of the committee and kind donations from the generous people of Flookburgh and the surrounding districts. Hopefully by next summer the exterior will be painted and the front door replaced. The hall is now used more than ever. Bookings are on the increase, bringing in much needed revenue. Cartmel Fell & District Local History Society
An enthusiastic group of members and visitors gathered in November to hear Dr. Ian Saunders give an illustrated talk about “Antique Maps and their Makers” – with emphasis on North West England. Dr. Saunders started by recounting the origins of mapping, leading up to the production of the first county maps of Britain in the 16th century. These continued to be refined for about two hundred years. Then, in the mid 19th century, the Ordnance Survey began to dominate mapmaking as it does today. Finally, he amused his audience with a few oddities and eccentric maps. December’s meeting will feature Ian Lewis, curator at Swarthmoor Hall, talking about the history of The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). This will be followed by a Jacob’s Join supper.The 2014 season begins on January 13th, with the AGM and presentations by members about their recent research. Grange and District U3A
Grange and District U3A is a thriving organisation with over 300 members. We hold a General Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over a coffee and biscuit.The main activities take place in the interest groups
which are co-ordinated by members. Several have been established in the last 12 months golf, birdwatching, scrabble and geology, a German group and a second French group, ‘French Too’. A short walks group now complements the high fell walking group. There is something for all tastes and interests! Recent group activities included a visit to Caerlaverock by the birdwatching group, a hilly circuit of the Rusland Valley by the cycling group and a guided tour of Lancaster by ‘Local Explorers’. Grange & District Art Society
The society held its Annual General Meeting on November 7th. Committee members were confirmed for a further year with the exception of the treasurer, Eddie O’Neil. Eddie has been involved with the work of the committee for many years and wishes to ‘retire’. His place has been taken by Susan Page; however he has kindly agreed to work with Susan until she feels able to fully take control of the society’s finances. There was a vote of thanks to Eddie and a small gift was presented in appreciation of all his work. The main points from the meeting were: it was agreed by members that the format for future meetings should be one demonstration each month which will be open to all visitors at a cost of £5: evening meetings should be made available in the New Year (more details next month), an Equal Opportunities Policy was entered into the Society’s constitution and it was agreed that the cost of subscriptions remain the same for another year.We have welcomed six new members this year and would like more. The Winter competitions are now under way and the first, a Stableford, was won by Veronica Hall.The following week’s Medal Competition was won by Margaret Popper. The Yellow Ball competition was won by a team: Margaret Popper, Beatrice Hall and Carol Campbell. We are looking forward to the Christmas

Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch
This month we began making and embellishing clothes for a Pixies washing line led by one of our own members Sandra Walsh.The idea had originally been suggested by another member, Agnes Halliwell, who thought it might be fun to decorate our Christmas party with the line plus clothes. Sandra had cut out various templates for hats, trousers, jackets etc. which we were able to use so the clothes were similar in size.The outfits were cut out of patterned and plain felt and then sewn together. The clothes were then embellished with pockets, stitch, buttons and bobbles until they were totally individual. There was a lot of giggling as members tried to make their outfit as showy as possible! By the end of the afternoon all the outfits were cut out and stitching had begun. Members took their outfits home to finish off and will bring them back to the Christmas party where they will be pegged to the line to decorate our room. It was a fun day and our thanks go to Sandra W. for organising it. The next meeting is Tuesday 3rd December when it will be our Christmas meeting with a Jacob’s Join. Coffee Club
November’s speaker was Peter Bone, a Church Army Captain from Skelmersdale, with colleague Craig Sinnott. Peter told us how the Church Army was founded by Wilson Carlisle in 1822 and that Skelmersdale was created as a New Town to accommodate folk ejected from the Liverpool slums in the 1970s. Initially it was fantastic but, as the big firms left and unemployment grew, the town went downhill. Peter and his family came there to build a community spirit amongst what had become a largely purposeless population. He started by meeting folk, like Craig, around the pool table at the local pub. He listened to them uncritically, gained their confidence and earned their respect, even starting a pub carol concert.Then he and his wife, Lynne, opened a café serving cheap healthy meals developed a centre for the sale of clothes, toys and books at reasonable prices. Their council house became a place where people could come to rest and talk, and enjoy a weekly house group ‘church’. This month 33 members of the local community are producing the pantomime ‘Aladdin’ much to their surprise and delight. The Church Army ministry has raised people’s aspirations and self worth.The next meeting of Coffee Club is on January 14th at Abbot Hall at 10.15am when Janet Chapman will talk about “Families in Overseas Mission”. Everybody welcome.
Trefoil Guild A long trek up a scenic Peruvian trail was described and illustrated by Elspeth Jones to fascinated members of the guild. Next month there will be an inter-guild carol service in Dalton on December 11th.
Grange Ramblers
An evening of Pie and Pea supper was held on Friday 11th October at the Parish Hall with music and an illustrated talk by Maurice Steele on a ‘Desert and Wildlife Safari of Namibia’ - it was very much enjoyed by everyone. On Wednesday 9th October, 14 ramblers met at Otterbank at the start of a seven mile walk. Heading out over field paths the walkers soon joined the Dalesway which took them to Black Moss Tarn,
with pleasant views of the Whinfell range en route. The walk next passed through Patton Bridge and Haveriggs and on to Whinfell Tarn, where a lunch stop was made. The return journey was via Biggersbank and Selside. The leader was Richard Thorpe. Cartmel & District Flower Club
It is always a real pleasure to attend Cartmel Flower Club’s AGM. With such lovely food available at our Jacob’s Join lunch,and then a really stimulating business meeting afterwards. Mrs Patricia Whitehead, the retiring club President was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Our new President is Mrs Joan Bentley. Joan has been working extremely hard as the Chairman last year, as well as demonstrating and successfully representing the club at various local exhibitions and shows.This year Joan was also invited to join SueWareing, Jane Burns and Linda Stoker in a team exhibition at Tatton.The team was awarded RHS Gold Medal, a truly magnificent achievement. We welcomed new Chairman Angela Procter. Mrs Hazel Allen continues to be Club Secretary as well as the new Vice Chairman and area representative. Mrs Sandra Barton, who has beenTreasurer for 5 years, has sadly retired but continues to be on the committee. The new treasurer is Mrs Rosemary Scholes, also a successful flower demonstrator representing the club team in local shows. All other members were voted on to serve the club for a further year.
Grange Cancer Support Drop In
Last week we had a coach trip to Barton Grange Garden Centre. It rained nearly all day but it didn’t dampen our spirits at all. The Christmas decorations were amazing and there was everything you could possibly need to make your home sparkle. This is advance notice to say that the Drop In will be closed Friday 27/12/13 and back again 3/1/14.We meet every Friday, 2-4pm, in the Parish Hall, Kents Bank Rd, Grange. Newton & Field Broughton WI
The WI had a very interesting talk on the sky at night at their November meeting. Some of the many stars, constellations and planets were illustrated with slides and the whole task was very informative. Unfortunately the evening was very overcast,wet,and not suitable to go outside and look at the sky, but, following a show of hands, it is quite likely that a group will go to Field Head Centre at a later date to try to put the theory into practice. The meeting on December 11th will be the Christmas party. Everyone was asked to take their own plate, dish and cutlery and those who have volunteered to make a pudding were asked not to forget them. There will be entertainment after the meal. The meeting will be at LindaleVillage Hall starting at the earlier time of 7pm (not 7.30 as usual).

Grange Men’s Forum
Forum turned to three of its own members to provide the entertainment at their meetings at Abbot Hall Hotel during November. Ken Taylor made a brief visit to Iceland in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights and came back with stunning pictures. Club secretary Alan Anderson has also been travelling to see parts of the Silk Road. His travels in Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan took in a major junction of the route. The third member to take the stage was Chris Abram, who took his audience down Memory Lane with his lecture ‘Britain Remembers’, which put the spotlight on the Sixties. Jonathan Denby, who lives in Grange, told the story of his expanding South Lakes hotels business over the past 21 years. He paid generous tribute to several members of his staff ‘ all ladies ‘ who had played a key role in the success of his enterprise. He also described his experience taking part in the Channel Four documentary ‘The Hotel’ centred on his Damson Dene Hotel.A masterclass on the lives of the Brönte family was provided by Isabel Stirk,who marvelled at the literature which came from the pens of the sisters. Grange Bridge Club
At theAGM in November the committee was re-elected en bloc. The officers are Chairman: David Strawbridge, Secretary: Bob Bagot, Treasurer: Derek Frobisher, Tournament Director: John Maclachlan. Committee members: Alan Anderson, Jean Frobisher, Marie Hicks, Chris Wilkinson. We are pleased to announce a victory over Kendal in an inter-club match during November. This follows the win over Windermere earlier in the year. Grange is a very popular club and meets on Tuesday evenings at the Netherwood Hotel at 6.45pm, but, because of Christmas functions, we will be at different venues on December 10th and January 7th.Visiting players are always welcome. Our annual New Year Dinner will be on the 14th January at the Netherwood Hotel.We are always keen to attract new members. Church News St Mary’s, Allithwaite December looks set to be a busy month at St Mary’s as we enter the season of Advent and begin to look forward not only to Jesus’ coming as a human baby at the first Christmas but also to His return as King at His second coming. We begin with a party (a ceilidh) held jointly with friends from Hope Church in Grange at the Allithwaite community centre on November 30th, and the following day will see the launch of an Angel Festival when we expect to see angels in various shapes and forms appear both in the church, the school and around the parish. The next Messy Church after school on Monday, December 2nd for
Grange Methodist Ivy Johnson was in charge of the Women’s Network meeting at Grange Methodist Church on 22nd Oct. and she chose to conduct a ‘Beetle Drive’. Teams of four competed and there was much fun as doubtful illustrations of beetles developed. Marion Briddock, President, chaired the meeting during which arrangements were announced for the Christmas Lunch and Carol Service. Thursday of that week, produced a very different interest in games, when Frank Jordan spoke to the Open Fellowship about his experiences of being a volunteer at the Olympic and Para-Lympic games 2012. St Charles The big news in the Parish this month is the closure of St Cuthbert’s Chapel of Ease at Flookburgh. Naturally, many people are upset and cannot understand the reason why. Declining numbers, ageing priests, too many Churches are the obviously basic reasons. But ask the question: where have all the baptised Catholics of Flookburgh and environs hidden themselves? I do think it is time for ‘resting’ Catholics to reassess the reasons for their absence from St Cuthbert’s. Supermarket shopping, children and travel to various Sunday morning activities and probably a lack of real understanding of the meaning, significance and importance of Eucharist in one’s life. It is a very secular and materialistic society in which we live and the power of advertising makes the idea of a Sunday morning Mass rather unattractive. Still, the Church has survived far worse
children and parents/carers,will also have a definite angel theme and on Saturday, December 7th the church will be open for angel displays and an angel workshop.To coincide with that “Café Allithwaite” will be open between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm providing a range of refreshments in the Mary Lambert Hall.The Angel Festival will culminate at our annual “Big Christmas Sing” onWednesday, December 11th in church at 6.00 pm accompanied by mulled wine and mince pies – followed by a visit to The Pheasant for more refreshments and carol singing. The themes for our Sunday morning services have continued to be based on Richard Foster’s book “Celebration of Discipline” and conclude on the first two Sundays
of December appropriately with the themes of “Guidance” and “Celebration”. On December 1st we are also looking forward to a visit from Church Army Captain Peter Bone who will give a short presentation about his work in Skelmersdale. On December 15th there will be a “Nativity” All-Age worship service at 10.45 am and at 6.00 pm a traditional candle lit service of lessons and carols (with more mulled wine and mince pies!) The services at Christmas include a Crib Service for children at 4.00pm on Christmas Eve, a midnight communion at 11.30 pm and a family communion at 10.00 am on Christmas Day. All are very welcome to join us.

Friday 8th Nov saw about twenty ladies of Grange Methodist Church busy in the schoolroom. There was a lot of chat ands a lot of work going on as they cut and glued, wrapping Christmas Shoe boxes for children in Eastern Europe. These will be filled on Nov. 22nd and within a few days will be on their way via International Aid.
We can lonely imagine the pleasure these give even and the boxes are valued by children who have so little. On Tuesday, lady members of the Women’s Network at the Methodist Church in Grange-o-Sands met for their usual meeting. After a few announcements, including details of the Christmas Lunch, President Marion Briddock introduced the speaker, Ralph Wilkinson. Ralph has been a member of theWesleyan Historical Society for many years, and spoke about the society. He then went on to describe the brides of founders Charles and John Wesley. Home life was difficult because they were itinerant preachers. One visitor was a member of the society, and a direct descendant of Charles Wesley.

Why not ask the priest or a friend who is Catholic? For interest’s sake, Mass times now are 9.00am and 10.30am on Sunday at St Charles throughout the year.However,all that said, may I take this opportunity to thank all the people of Flookburgh and the Parish who have worked hard to maintain St Cuthbert’s over the many years. I remember and pray particularly for those men and women who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith who worked tirelessly to establish St Cuthbert’s. May they rest in peace. It is now the responsibility of the
whole parish to see to the growth and deepening of faith in what are difficult times in a very secular and possibly post-Christian era. There can be no place for grudges, gossip or backbiting.We profess to be Catholic Christians – let us behave as such and be a credit to past members of St Cuthbert’s.I’m sure other things have happened in the Parish but that will be for another time. Today is a time for the parish – to thank God for what has been and to re-group and go forward in faith and rediscover and invite and encourage those ‘resting’ members of God’s family. St Pauls Grange St Paul’s was full to capacity for the annual Service of Remembrance which commenced with the calling out of the names of those brave men from Grange who gave their lives in the two World Wars. After a moving service, that included an eloquent address by the Rev. Joe Daly, the procession left the church and followed the Flookburgh Brass Band to the Ornamental Gardens where wreaths were laid at the foot of the War Memorial. The Windermere Deanery Network Youth Leader, Chris Mason, gave a presentation to the congregation during the service on the 17th November. He explained how he works with young people in both the north and south of the Deanery, visiting schools, setting up clubs and activities as well as supporting the many volunteers who help with the various youth groups. A reminder that the Parish Hall is open every Tuesday morning between 10 am and 12 noon for those wishing to drop in for a cup of coffee and a chat. Many thanks to all those who are supporting this most successful venture. The Christmas Tree Festival being held at St Paul’s for the first time promises to be spectacular. Over 30 decorated trees will be on display daily until January 2nd and the event will be launched with a welcoming reception on the 5th December at 7 pm to include wine, mince pies & nibbles as well as music, including the first public performance of St Paul’s augmented choir under the leadership of Musical Director, Charles Edmondson. On Saturday14th December (Extravaganza weekend) Grange Community Choir will be singing in St Paul’s Church as part of the ChristmasTree Festival celebrations. Come along at 11am for an hour of singing followed by coffee and mince pies. The choir will also play a leading role in the annual Carol Service on Sunday 22nd December at 4 pm. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served after the service. On Christmas Eve services start with the graveside candle service at 4 pm at Grange Cemetery. After a short service of remembrance, candles will be lit and placed on the graves of loved ones. This will be followed at St Paul’s by the children’s favourite service of Christingle at 6.30 pm and Midnight Communion will commence at 11.30 pm. On Christmas Day, there is a choice of two Communion services, at the Fell Church at 9.30 am or at St Paul’s at 11 am. The members of St Paul’s would like to wish everyone a very joyous Christmas and a peaceful New Year and we look forward to welcoming you to St Paul’s over the coming Christmas season.

I would just like to compliment the drivers of Grange and area who have tried to negotiate the full length of Fernleigh Road in the last 2 days (30th & 31st Oct) and have been unsuccessful due to the road being blocked outside Carleton House due to the United Utilities fitting water pipes to the property. I has been somewhat amusing to watch vehicles drive past a sign that says ROAD CLOSED AHEAD only to be confronted by another sign in the middle of the road along with barriers saying ROAD CLOSED. The 2 signs are about a 100 feet apart. Just after the road was closed i was amazed to hear one lady driver demand that the road be opened so that she could drive through the road works, the demand was made to the workmen who were digging the trench, needless to say she had to reverse back and turn round and go from whence she came. Its even amazing to watch how many vehicles drove past the Road Closed Ahead sign then have to reverse back towards Murrell Hill/ Fernleigh Avenue in an attempt to turn round,. I was even more amazed to see a Police Van try and do exactly the same thing last night ! The mind boggles . And these drivers have signed their driving licences to confirm that they are fully conversant with the Highway Code ! I think not. There was ample warning at either end of Fernliegh Road that it is was being blocked as from the 30th October and the signs are still there (31st Oct) yet they still come ! Oh well, modern motoring, just ignore any road signs, it be reet sod it! Name and address supplied
I have only been fortunate enough to live in beautiful Grange for two years but been dismayed at the deterioration of the old Lido for many years. It was ridiculous to spend £15,000 on the latest survey and like published in the Grange Now November issue – what a waste of time and money! To have another pool would be a bottomless money pit. A retractable roof, however, is a good idea – especially if it was to cover a giant sand pit, then Grange-over-Sands would have sand! A water splash feature would be great with stripped deck chairs around the sand pit and traditional beach huts selling “seaside fayre” and local crafts.An onsite café with gallery or memorabilia. I do hope SLDC gets its act together with English Heritage and Lottery funding to restore this wonderful project and enhance Grange-over-Sands (very soon). Linda Jepson, Grange

cut over the last three years and has already had to cut its expenditure by £88 million a year during that time. Cuts will continue to the extent of £80 million over the next three years. A public consultation has been launched to obtain the views of the public on how the council’s expenditure should be further reduced. 12 years, was awarded the Institution’s Silver Badge recently. He is pictured receiving the award from the Branch Chairman, Christine Blakemore, after which he and other committee members enjoyed the wonderful tribute concert for Cedric Robinson at the Coronation Hall, Ulverston. The annual Lifeboat Coffee Morning was held in Grange on 9th November, 2013. The Branch was very pleased indeed to see so many people attend, and for the kind and generous support from everyone. £800.60p was raised at this event for the RNLI. 10am. This is a free event with a little competition at the end with a prize. To look for: We may get visits from Waxwing and Brambling again this winter as they are on the mainland. It’s always worth checking finch flocks for Brambling and other visitors. There are some Twite on the promenade again this winter and can sometimes be seen at the junction box in the Elm tree. Lindale Heritage Walks

George Webster, architect and marble cutter, built Eller Howe, where he decorated the grounds with follies, including the ruined tower on Dixon Heights. Each walk leaflet is A4, 3-fold in full colour, and has a route map and directions, photos and comments on heritage features en route. The Lindale Heritage Walks leaflets will be available for sale, at £5 per pack, at Grange Now and Lindale Village Stores.
This year’s coppice work was kick started with the Grange Fell care day on the 13th and we had volunteers from all over helping out on Brown Robin as well other areas in Grange. A good coppice session was done, as well as children from Allithwaite School, who cleared lots of scrub for the wild flowers. A great day and thanks to Friends of the Lake District and the NIA for organising it. We shall be

British Horse Society honours Cartmel couple During November, Jean and David Rogers received the leading equestrian charity’s ‘Bodynfoel’ Award for excellent service in promoting the work of the Society. The Rogers, of Cartmel, are integral to the running of many of the committee’s events, and Jean is also chairman of the North’s regional committee. As owners of the BHSApproved Birkby Cottage Stables, they have welcomed many visitors to BHS events and competitions. Jean has diverse equestrian interests and is highly regarded for her expertise as a horsewoman, training successful competitors across all disciplines, from side-saddle to carriage driving. The award was presented by BHS President Martin Clunes, a role in which he takes great pleasure. “This is what I love about the BHS – the fact that people who are passionate about horses are not just talking about what needs to be done, but getting out there and doing it. The hard work and dedication of our volunteers and supporters never ceases to amaze me, and it is a real honour to be here today recognising these wonderful achievements.”
Cark Station hosts Lord Cavendish Readers may recall news of refurbishments to Cark station covered in the October issue of Grange Now. The improvements, including complete refurbishment of the main passenger shelter with the provision of new seating, windows and glass doors, four new raised gardens, new CCTV, repainting and a safer walking route from the station to nearby Holker Hall, was celebrated on Friday the 25th October. The total cost was over £45,000 funded by Northern Rail, Cumbria County Council, a grant from ACoRP and the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership. The celebration was opened by Lord Cavendish who remembered the station from his early days at Holker Hall and he was delighted to see
the station looking very smart once again. Craig Harrop from Northern Rail indicated plans to install customer information screens at the station in the future and to bring other stations along the
line up to a similar standard. A new advertising panel for Holker Hall on the station’s fence shows passengers that it is only a 15 minute walk to get to one of the area’s major visitor attractions.
Simon Rogan: Claridge’s chef in residence Claridge’s has revealed that Simon Rogan will be the next chef to take up residence in the restaurant of this exclusive London hotel. Simon, whose Cartmel restaurant, L’Enclume, holds two Michelin stars, will be the successor to Gordon Ramsay and will begin a 10-year
contract with the hotel from Spring next year. Simon has many achievements under his belt, including Restaurateur of the Year and the Chef Award (Catey Awards 2013). L’Enclume has been voted ‘Best Restaurant in the UK’ by the Good Food Guide 2014 and featured in Steve Coogan and Rob

Grange Toy Library Grange Toy Library is changing! After nearly ten years running as an independent charity it is merging with Cumbria Library Service. In order to achieve this merger we shall need to stop issuing any toy bags from the end of November. However the KS1 and KS2 Explor-a-Sacks will still be available to borrow as usual. If you have any toy bags currently on loan, please return immediately. Once our reorganisation is complete toy bags will be available to borrow again. A Cumbrian butcher scooped top prize in the North region prestigious Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards 2013. Hospice Neighbours need Volunteers St Mary’s Hospice is looking for volunteers in the Ulverston & South Lakeland area to become Hospice Neighbours. The volunteers need to be over 18 and will help patients and families who are living with life-shortening conditions and wish

This Bradley Apple is a Beauty A fabulous number of community volunteers including 70 children turned out on a cold day on Wednesday 13th November to help improve the woodlands and natural environment around Grange. The Fell Care Day involved 10 conservation activities across four sites (Eggerslack Woods, Brown Robin Nature Reserve, Lime Kiln Woods, and Grange Community Orchard) and was jointly organised by the Morecambe Bay Limestones and Wetlands Nature Improvement Area and Friends of the Lake District. Activities included coppicing, removing invasive sycamore, cutting back woodland bramble and removing grass from 80 fruit trees in Grange Community Orchard.Volunteers also installed
a handrail alongside steps on a footpath and rebuilt 10 m of dry stone walling. The habitat restoration work will benefit a range of birds and plants, as well as rare species such as high brown and pearl bordered fritillary butterflies, and the wax cap fungi. 70 children from three local schools took part in the day Grange, Lindale and Allithwaite primary schools; as well as young people from the Mosaic Young Champions project which aims to encourage young people to get involved with and explore the Lake District National Park and pick up skills along the way. More than 300 pieces of cake were kindly donated and eaten by volunteers! Well done to everyone involved - a great community effort.
The Bradley Beauty apple was found as a wilding growing on the edge of Nichols Moss which is one of the three Mosses at Witherslack. The tree itself is unusual in producing suckers and has a tendency to coppice. The apples on the original tree are small, green and
unremarkable. However when grown on more fertile soil are much larger, more prolific and striped with red splashes. Tree growth is vigorous and generally healthy. The fruit is medium large with a strong flavour. It is self fertile, ripe in mid October, keeps until December, and is both a cooker and eating apple. It is a heavy cropper. Bob Bradley

Allithwaite School raised £107.57 for Breast Cancer Awareness by having a dress down day, in pink of course, to raise money for this worthwhile cause. The children produced some excellent work during writing week recently. The topic was ‘Mystery Happenings at Allithwaite.’ There is a Lloyds Bank fund which provides grants to support more than 1,300 local good causes in villages, towns and cities across England, Wales and the Isle of Man. Between September and November, the public voted for the shortlisted causes of which Allithwaite School was one. The two groups with the most votes in a community will each receive £3,000 and the other two, £300 each. We are eagerly awaiting the results and will let you know how we got on. The PTA hosted a successful “meet and greet” event for all the children one Friday afternoon after school, offering them free beefburgers and drinks, and teas and coffees for the parents and carers. The weather was good so we could have the event outside and Rev Rob very kindly manned the barbecue and Ellen Bradshaw (who happened to be passing) stepped in offered to cut the bread - thank you very much! It was an excellent opportunity for everyone to meet socially and not have to pay for anything! School will soon see the delivery of a new bench which was funded by Alex Owen from Year 1. During the holidays, Alex held a bake sale at his house to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice and the PTA and an outstanding £140 was raised.Having heard about Alex’s excellent fundraising, Playdale have very generously agreed to both deliver and install the bench free of charge for which we are very grateful. The children were invited to dress down for Children in Need and bring in a teddy; the children baked cakes and sold them raising £148.98 for the charity.The PTA is hosting the annual Christmas Fair on Friday, 29 November 2013 from 6pm - 8pm. We look forward to welcoming you. Year 5 and 6 have also been very active as part of the Fell Care Day, helping clear the grassland in Brown Robin Wood. The children had a very rewarding day and thankfully the weather was in our favour!

Cartmel Priory
It might feel like winter, but children were singing ‘the sun will come out tomorrow’ in Cartmel Priory School, when pupils and staff took to the stage to perform this year’s school production ‘Annie’. The cast and crew worked hard throughout the term with a busy schedule of rehearsals to put together one of our best ever musical shows. There is so much talent in school, with outstanding performances from Emily Barker as Annie, Lucia Harrington as Miss Hannigan and Murray Adams as Mr Warbucks. Murray is currently performing in 3 separate shows so we hope he does not get his lines mixed up in any of them! For some of our cast it was their third production as part of the team; Jonty Benn and Sarah-Jayne Dalton have had main character roles in Bugsy Malone, Grease and now Annie. Sadly this was their last musical at Cartmel as they are in Year 11 and will soon be moving on to 6th form studies.

It was great to have staff and pupils cast alongside each other, with Mrs Rea, Mrs Wright and Mrs Dodwell as the lovely Boylan sisters, Mrs Howcroft as Fred McCracken and Mr Nicholson playing a very credible, if somewhat unpredictable , President Roosevelt! Many of our younger school pupils participated in the production this year and gave us a strong chorus, especially the orphan girls with great performances from Amy Shepherd, Molly Cowley, Jess Walmsley and Lydia Dobson. I am sure we will see many of these in leading roles in the future. Other rising stars included James Mason who

To climb a magic beanstalk and return with a golden egg-laying hen (Eleanor Johnson) and a golden harp (Jessica Walmsley) is the story of true panto’, and Grace Heap, playing the adventurous Jack, accomplishes the task in style. Jack also returns with a beautiful princess, played by Chloe Owens. Grange Youth have a talent for producing a wonderfully funny, traditional, child-friendly pantomime, and this year is no exception. The Compassionate Friends, who support families after the death of a child, is launching the “Say their name at Christmas” campaign to coincide with TCF awareness week (1st 8th December). A worldwide candle lighting ceremony will take place on December 8th, supported by the charity’s new film “SayTheir Name”, which highlights the problems parents and siblings face after the death of a child. TCF Trustee, Shaun Hewitt, said:“Christmas is one of the most difficult times for any family that is grieving for the child that was such a vibrant part of their lives. An estimated 6000 people under the age of 20 die each year in the UK, leaving behind 20,000 – 30,000 newly bereaved parents and siblings. Our Learn to Run courses have been such a success that Sue is planning to do some follow on classes in the New Year, allowing people to progress and also hopefully starting another beginners Learn to Run class, subject to sufficient interest. If you want to sign up for the beginners, please get in touch. Sue has seen some amazing results and ladies who have never run before have been achieving up to 2 ½ miles before stopping, which has dispelled the memories from school days and instilled in those on the course that it is never too late to learn to run. As we head towards Christmas we have some classes still to run which include a Silversmithing and Enamelling workshop on December 7th with popular local jewellery maker Amanda Hunter. In Ulverston, Marilyn Hale will be running a Glass Fusing workshop from her own craft studio on the 7th December, an ideal opportunity to make a unique and personalised gift for loved ones.We still have some spaces on the second Willow Weaving course to run this academic year on the 25th January 2014 which is run at Castle Head Field Centre as well as A Beginners Guide to the Night Skies on the same night. The week before on the 18th January there is A Guide to the winter skies using Astrophotography After Christmas we are hoping to put on some additional classes to the brochure which include another Get to grips with your iPad and iPhone as I am sure many people may find that Santa brings them this as a gift. We also have a new weekly Buying and selling on eBay course, starting 14th January. Our popular cookery tutor,JulieWoodburn, starts a Vegetarian cookery course on the 15th January, which looks at tasty meals which will help cut down your meat intake without losing some of the variety and nutrients. You’ll discover there is more to it than nut roasts. We have a number of art classes starting in the New Year which include Life Painting in Oils and Acrylics starting the 8th January for 6 weeks; textures and surface painting starting on the 7th January for 5 weeks and our usual weekly classes to improve your painting skills on Tuesdays in Cartmel and Thursdays in Ulverston at Quaker Barn.We also plan to have an improvers guitar course in Ulverston starting January so names are being taken now. We have moved the Nuno Felt techniques course from its weekly slot to a Saturday workshop, due to take place on January 25th at Cartmel village Hall.
