Investment Matters

Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP Chartered Financial Planner I trust you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas and festive period. As we enter 2014 it is an opportune time to carry out a broad review of 2013. Collectively it was another good year for investment markets albeit with pockets of indifferent performance . Government Treasury Stock remains over priced and there is little to cheer savers with interest rates remaining at all time lows and latest Bank of England estimates are that interest rates are not likely to rise until the second half of 2015 or beyond. E c o n o m i c c o n d i t i o n s h ave continued to improve and whilst they could not yet be described as good the economy is certainly in better shape now that it has been in recent years. As ever, there remain challenges with Government needing to assess any unintended consequences.

015395 35453 or info@grangenow.co.uk FORTHCOMING FEATURES - The February features will be on property and local sports clubs.

Welcome to 2014

And a Happy New Year from the Grange Now team. This month’s feature is entitled ‘New Year, Healthy New You.’ So if you need a little inspiration take a look at the centre spread. Looking ahead the February feature will focus on residential and holiday property. We’ll also be finding out more about local sports clubs, so please get in touch if you wish to contribute to either of these topics.

Green Deal scam warning

For example, an increase in interest rates would be welcomed by savers (and long overdue!) but not so by mortgage borrowers who will have become used to ultra low borrowing rates on debt levels which in many cases are higher than they should be – this will be a tricky area for Government to manage. Now also represents a good time for us to look inwardly at our firm and assess the previous 12 months. 2013 was an excellent year for our firm during which we obtained Chartered Financial Planning status as a firm and became the only owner managed Chartered firm in the South Lakes. We now look after circa £180 million of investments on behalf of over 600 clients. As in previous years we saw a steady increase in client levels with the main reasons for new clients seeking our help being (in no particular order): • Those seeking an independent review of an existing investment portfolio. • Those seeking an independent review of an existing pension portfolio where retirement is less than 5 years away.

It has come to the attention of Grange Now that a telephone scam is in operation in the area. One reader told us how he had

• Those seeking a new financial planning firm where their previous adviser has ceased operating (notably banks where many ceased to provide ongoing advice in 2013). It has also been noticeable in recent years that fewer of us have Inheritance Tax planning at the top of our priorities. There is no right or wrong approach with this and it perhaps reflects the economic uncertainty over recent years and the natural instinct to preserve capital rather than address Inheritance Tax issues. May I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for 2014. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Your feedback on the new ‘shiny’ paper used for the outer cover has been positive for the most part. So plans are afoot to use this type of paper throughout. The main benefit is that images are easier to see. We’ll also be going full colour on every page in the next issue. If you wish to have your say on planned budget cuts and in particular changes to public transport, Cumbria County Council will be in the Victoria Hall in Grange on January 15th from 3.30 p.m. - 7 p.m. - more details at www.cumbria.gov.uk/ ourfuture/ Best wishes to all for the year ahead. N.B.THE OFFICE WILL RE-OPEN MONDAY 6TH JANUARY AT 9PM been contacted by someone claiming to be a government green deal advisor requesting that they call back to claim a new boiler, amongst other things. When questioning the information given he was immediately

disconnected from the number, which was witheld. If you have received any similar calls, report them to Cumbria Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, tel: 08454 04 05 06.

Agreeable small towns

Everyone apparently wants to live in an agreeable small town with good road and rail links, good shopping, good health, a vibrant community spirit, a low crime rate and good pubs and restaurants. Small rural towns in England can command an average of £14,000 more for a property compared to the equivalent in cities or suburbs. The premium is much higher if the town particularly ‘quaint’ or in a picturesque area. Grange ticks most of the boxes and is why we are ripe for developers wanting to move in, but will this lead to our ancient infrastructure collapsing under the strain? Can our roads cope with more traffic? On the other hand we are predominately an ageing population and we need young families to keep our schools open and our shops and services staffed adequately. It is a dilemma. If SLDC’s Land Allocation Plan achieves the 700 houses earmarked in the vicinity between now and 2025 we will hardly see a blade of grass between Grange, Kents Bank and Allithwaite. What price property values then? Will Grange still tick most of the boxes? Or without the influx of more homes/residents will Grange simply fade away and die? Let us have your views.

Cold calling scam Trading Standards have issued a warning to South Lakes householders of a company offering a government subsided roof cleaning and sealing service and checking the condition of rendering, etc. which they claimed should cost £20,000. A 95-year-old received an unsolicited telephone call from the trader on Wednesday 4th December saying they were on their way to survey his property. He was persuaded to hand over three cheques totalling £12,240. Luckily Trading Standards intervened and the contract has now been cancelled. To report any cold calling or suspicious activity please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06 or the Police on 101. Lost bangle

A silver bangle, which clips together with two hearts, has been lost in Grange. It holds a lot of sentimental value to the owner. The bangle was lost from Saturday 30th November onwards. A small reward is offered for its safe return. If you find the bangle or have any information, please contact 015395 35790 or 07774 012 931.

Bailey Lane crossing closure Network Rail has confirmed that it is seeking to close the footpath crossing over the railway at Bailey Lane, Grange-over-Sands. A request for a rail crossing diversion order to allow the crossing to permanently close has been made to Cumbria County Council on 16th December 2013. Surveys carried by Network Rail Mr Robinson, who is chairman showed that Bailey Lane was of the Furness Line Community used by over 4000 people over Rail Partnership, was quoted nine days this summer including by the BBC as saying: “We’ve children, people with push bikes seen an awful lot of dangerous and mobility scooters. behaviour on the crossing people wandering up the line Peter Robinson has lived close picking blackberries, chasing dogs to the crossing for 25 years and and wheelchairs being pushed welcomes the move to close it.

Rural Transport Meltdown?

Outcry over possible Tesco A planning application has been submitted to SLDC for a retail unit on the site of the old British Legion building (and once Grange School) - see pics. The application is for A1, A2 & A3 use - A1 is for shops, which covers most shops including hairdressers and travel agents and also includes the provision for cold food (sandwiches, etc). A2 is for financial or professional services, also including betting shops and A3 is for the sale of food and drink on the premises and sale of hot food off the premises (take-away). It seems all bases have been covered by the applicant company, Kents Bank Assets, however their agents Edgeplan refused to confirm who the tenant would be. The application is believed to be for a Tesco Express -Tesco Express is apparently the franchise arm of Tesco supermarkets. At the December Grange Town Council meeting much concern was expressed, primarily about traffic density and noise, if permission was granted

out with a train in sight. Perhaps the most dangerous is people engrossed on their mobile phones, not aware of anything else at all.”Network Rail said a survey found the crossing was used by more than 4,000 people over nine days this summer, including children and people with bikes and mobility scooters. In September, a train travelling at 50mph came within 100 yards of striking a pedestrian. The plan has been backed by South Lakes MP Tim Farron, who said: “This crossing is one of the most dangerous in the region and the sooner we can make it

Local bus services are in the news at the moment. Although Stagecoach nationally is predicting an increase in bus use in the coming years as private motoring decreases in popularity (thanks to parking issues, fuel costs, congestion etc.) many councils are considering cutting back on rural transport subsidies to save money and Cumbria County Council is no exception. In their Budget Consultation, to end on 20th January 2014, many rural bus routes are threatened to save nearly £2m a year for the next 3 years, part of an overall massive

£80m saving the council is planning to make by 2017.The Travellers’ Choice local bus around Grange, Cartmel and Lindale is one of those under threat. (Despite a report to the contrary elsewhere, Grange Now is reliably informed the X6 running between Kendal and Barrow will be unaffected as it no longer receives a subsidy). The bus around Grange/ Cartmel/Lindale is subsidised at £1.36 per passenger with a reported use of 33,650 passengers. Subsidies vary according to usage and route. For example the Lecks Travel Ulverston Town route is subsidised at 80p per passenger having nearly 21,000 passengers. Kirkby Lonsdale Coaches’ Kendal Town route’s subsidy is 19p per passenger with nearly 95,000 passengers. Without the subsidy local bus operators are likely to cut services as they say some won’t

for a further convenience store in the town. Grange Now asked the Chamber ofTrade for their comments. A spokesman told us, “The Chamber represents all shades of opinion and whilst some will consider the competition to be unfair, i.e. the local ‘David’ versus the national ‘Goliath’, many have expressed the view that Grange’s grocery shopping requirement is not being met by the existing facilities.” Grange Now also did some investigating about Booths, very much recently on the back-burner.

Grange is the final venue for the Consultation ‘Roadshow’ at the Victoria Hall on15th January - so go along to see the proposals and make your views known to the council officials present.

Was the store still intending coming to Grange? Apparently they are, as talks about flooding risk in the area of Windermere Road and the dredging of the duck pond are still taking place. TheToyota dealership presently occupying the site is rumoured to be moving to Morecambe within 12 months, which would open the way for Booths to eventually arrive in Grange. Now all we need is for Spar to expand into the vacant ex-HSBC premises next door! We will be spoilt for choice then.

Councillor Tom Harvey commented ‘I’m really disappointed that Network Rail have taken the decision to make a formal request to the County Council for the closure of the crossing. Musical Notes Bay Community Singers The fledgling Bay Community Singers gave their first ‘almost public’ performance on Thursday 12th December when they entertained families and friends at the United Reform Church hall. The thirty-strong choir presented a varied programme on a Christmas theme, ranging from John Rutter’s arrangement of ‘The Colours of Christmas’ through to a two part rendition of Slade’s ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’, plus traditional carols which encouraged audience participation. It was obvious that there had been a lot of hard work put in by everyone, led by conductor Jane

Thedham, to enable the singers to perform the nine pieces of music with two and three part harmonies after a handful of rehearsals. The enjoyment of all the choir members was plain to see and it is remarkable that some of them were singing to an audience for the first time – but not for the last, as the next performance of the Bay Community Singers was due to take place a couple of days later at the Christmas Tree Festival in St Paul’s Church.

Flookburgh Operatic Society

Flookburgh Operatic Society are holding their annual Coffee Morning on Saturday 25th January, 2014, in Flookburgh Village Hall,

doors opening at 10.00am. There will be our usual popular stalls selling cakes, books, nearly new clothes, white elephants, raffles and games, etc. We are pleased to announce that our next show will be “Stepping Out, the Musical” on 18th until 22nd March, 2014. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 25th January 2014.

Eternal light to brighten the dark of winter. Kendal South Choir sing Faure’s ‘Requiem’, and other French music. Saturday 25th January, 7.30pm, in St. Thomas’s Church, Kendal. Tickets £12. Soprano Tracie Penwarden and bass-baritone Jolyon Dodgson,

will join conductor Ian Thompson and Kendal South Choir, to sing harmonious and heavenly French music. At the heart of the concert is Faure’s ‘Requiem’. Faure saw his setting “as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards the happiness of the hereafter.” His pared down orchestration harking back to the pure tone of early church music. The choir will also be performing Berlioz’ ‘The Shepherds’ Farewell’, Faure’s ‘Cantique de Jean Racine’ and Franck’s setting of Psalm 150 and ‘Panis Angelicus’. The soloists will sing a duet ‘Benedictus’, from the superb, but little known Christmas Oratorio by SaintSaens. For further information, contact Dorothy Davies on 015395 32241. www.kendalsouthchoir.org.uk.

Art Beat 2020 Vision comes to Grange A brand new photography exhibition, made up of natural world images, is coming to Grange next summer. The 2020Vision display will tour around Grange, Morecambe and Barrow in to bring art and tourism to the Morecambe Bay area from May – August next year. The exhibition has previously been featured at the Southbank in London, Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens and Brighton promenade. Susannah Bleakley, Executive Director of the Morecambe Bay Partnership, said: “This is a great chance for these towns to put themselves on the map along with some of the best-known venues in the UK…We want the three towns to feel proud that this world-class display is coming to them.” The photographs were taken by 20 photographers under 20 ‘headings’ – with several pictures of the Lake District and Morecambe Bay in the portfolio. The exhibition will take the form of a ‘street gallery’ on 100 panels, alongside workshops, film screenings, plays and competitions. However, despite raising £22,000 already, MBP will require a further £21,500. A campaign has been running on The Big Give website during December. Keep watching for further fundraising opportunities. For more information visit https:// secure.thebiggive.org.uk/projects/ view/19806/2020-vision-exhibition or call the Morecambe Bay Partnership office on 01539 734888.

Grizedale Arts installation wins Turner Prize

During December, Lake District artist Laura Prouvost won the Turner Prize for her ‘moving’ video installation, ‘Wantee’. Her piece was inspired by German painter Kurt Schwitters, who lived in Ambelside for three years during exile from Nazi

Germany. The title of the piece was the nickname of Schwitters’ girlfriend who was forever asking guests if they “want tea?” The installation was cocommissioned by Grizedale Arts and Tate Britain and shot in a dark, muddy room at Grizedale Arts. Laure worked on the project for months in Lawson Park, Coniston, and involved local artists and Coniston Youth Club. Director of Tate Britain, Penelope Curtis, described Laure’s work as “unexpectedly moving… a complex and courageous combination of images and objects in a deeply atmospheric environment”.You can see Laure’s Turner Prize show at the Ruskin Museum, Coniston, in a ‘homecoming’ exhibition on January 24.

Abbot Hall offers Google virtual tours Abbot Hall Art Gallery has joined forces with Google to create virtual tours through the gallery’s collection. The Kendal tourist attraction is the latest partner in Google’s Art Project, which seeks to build relationships between the internet search engine giant and some of the world’s most acclaimed art galleries and museums. Street View technology allows the viewer to move virtually around the gallery, selecting works that interest them to discover more. As well as featuring nearly 100 works from the Lakeland Arts

Collection, The Great Picture Triptych by Lady Anne Clifford was chosen to be photographed in extraordinary detail using high resolution photo capturing technology. The viewer is able to study minute details of the brushwork, including birds hiding in the pattern of ‘young’ Lady Anne’s dress or the minuscule writing throughout the triptych. Oxen Park Cinema Club The Carthouse – Britain’s Newest Cinema (and one of the smallest!) After over 10 years of development and fund raising, the Oxen Park Cinema Club has finally acquired its own purposebuilt cinema. Located in an old carthouse opposite the Manor pub in the small High Furness village of Oxen Park, this has a very welcoming main room with comfortable seating for around 35 people, and small additional rooms for storage and film editing. There are also toilet facilities with disabled access. Very careful attention has been paid to making the building completely soundproof. First showings were in November and December and all to full houses: ‘Skyfall’, the latest James Bond film, and ‘Lincoln’, the award-winning story of Abraham Lincoln’s fight to end slavery in the 1860s. The Club also ran two evenings when local people, sponsors and organisations that had provided funding for the conversion of the building were invited to celebrate the opening of the cinema and to view the latest production of our filmmaking unit: a DVD about the Backbarrow Blue Works. Further information about The Carthouse can be found on our website: www. oxenparkcinemaclub.org.uk. Our New Year programme has

We also have a programme of children’s films. Please make any enquiries or book your seats in advance through the Secretary, Carol McNeill (Tel: 01229 861507, Email: carolmcneill@tiscali.co.uk).

Prom Art needs you Can you spare some time to support a very worthwhile cause? The Prom Art open air craft events are becoming more and more popular. They are well supported by local residents and also bring lots of visitors to Grange. The events need a lot of organising and we have a small team of people on our Committee and they are already working on next year’s events. We need some more committee members to help us. If you are interested please contact Peter Nightingale on 07751 087 292.

Edwardian Festival 2014 If you are thinking of having a stall at the 2014 Edwardian Festival (conveniently dated Saturday 14th June - so you can’t forget) and didn’t have one last year contact 015395 32265 with your details for a booking form to be emailed or posted to you. If you had a stall last year you will receive a booking form during January. The Edwardian Festival committee is also asking for any local young bands or music groups to get in touch if they would like to perform at the Festival. Contact number as above. An innovation this year is a Social Evening for Stallholders to be held during April to discuss this year’s Festival and to answer any queries. A selection of Edwardian costumes will be available to purchase as well, all at modest prices. Invitations will be sent out nearer the time.

Foster home for otter cub

A Grange-over-Sands residence is once again host to a wild European otter cub. Aquarist and marine mammal medic Sarah Neill is currently fostering Conrad, a

10-week-old dog otter found on a road in Coniston by a concerned motorist. Conrad appears to have been separated from his mother and became Sarah’s charge through the International Otter Survival Fund, for whom she and fiancé Chris Edginton fostered two otter cubs last year. Conrad was weening when he was found, so Sarah has been hand-feeding him mashed fish and syringing fluids every four hours. Otters need to eat around 20% of their body weight every day and Conrad is a choosy critter, preferring trout from Booths!

only a phone call away.” During December Sarah and Conrad will take the long journey to Skye and the IOSF headquarters where he will be taught all the necessary skills to survive before being reintroduced to the wild close to where he was found. “I’m sure I will miss him,” she mused “but I am really looking forward to seeing him grown up and fully rehabilitated so we can return him to the wild where he belongs.”

Fortunately the supermarket chain has agreed to provide Conrad with all the fish he can eat during his stay in Grange. “I feel very privileged to be caring for Conrad and honoured that the IOSF entrusted me with his care,” said Sarah. “He will whistle to call to me if he needs something, whether it is to go to the toilet or simply just for a cuddle. It can be really worrying if he has a bad day, but great support from the IOSF has been

Voluntary Social Car Scheme You may have seen posters locally for Volunteer Drivers for the Voluntary Social Car Scheme run by Cumbria County Council. This is a very worthwhile and much needed scheme which provides transport to members of the community who cannot make their journey by public or private transport. There is a shortage of volunteer drivers in the Grange area which means that the scheme is limited at the moment in the journeys it can provide. I have lived in rural areas with limited public transport for most of my life and I am the sort of person who would offer a lift to a neighbour who wished to go shopping or a friend who wanted to visit someone in hospital. With this scheme I can do that for neighbours and friends that I just haven’t met yet! A local Co-ordinator receives requests for journeys and finds a volunteer who is able and willing to do the journey. Some drivers offer to be available on certain days and others accept journeys

on an individual basis according to their own prior commitments. All expenses are reimbursed and extra insurance is provided by Cumbria County Council. Journeys can be as short as a mile or two to the local clinic or church, or as long as a trip to visit friends/relatives within Cumbria. I have found this volunteer work very rewarding and I enjoy meeting the people who use the service. They are always very grateful as it allows them be more independent and able to attend doctor/dentist appointments and social events without having to constantly impose on friends and family. Even though I work part-time variable hours, I am able to help my community without having to commit to a set time or number of hours every week. If you have your own car, have time on your hands, would like to help your neighbours and are aged under 76yrs, please phone the local Co-ordinator William Boyce on 015395 31159 for an informal chat. The reading will start at 2.30 pm and refreshments are included in the ticket price (£1). Book your place in the Library or reserve by phoning 32749. Enjoy reading Magazines? We now have a new free online service called Zinio which is available through the library computers and online at the Cumbria County Council website. You need your library card and an email address to set up an account and then you will have access to 50 magazines including Aeroplane, Ideal Home, Mac User, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and many more. All Library members can borrow items and return items to any library in Cumbria. The only

exception to this is Premium DVDs. Libraries include the Mobile Library which visits monthly on a Thursday - 23rd January this month - to High Newton (9.25) Cartmel (10.00) Allithwaite (10.55) Bridge House (11.35) Flookburgh Square (13.00) and Holker (14.30). World Book Night is on 23 April 2014 and is now open to applications. You can request a set of 18 books from a choice of 20 titles to be delivered to your local library or bookshop for you to collect and give away. Titles available this year include books by Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Jane Fallon, Andy McNab and Richard Wiseman. Apply online at www.worldbooknight.org Want to get online? We have 8 public access computers available to use with access to colour and black & white printers. Users have to be library members, which we can arrange in a few

minutes if you have ID including your name and address with you. There is a small charge to use, with the exception of over 60s, under 19s and Concessionary members who can have a free hour each day. We have free display space available in the Library for local groups to display their work or information about their organisation. Displays in the past year have included the Art Society, U3A, the Embroiderers Guild, Drama Society, painters and photographers. If you would like to book a space drop into the library to check availability as we already have a couple of bookings for 2014 and one for 2015! We hope you have had a lovely festive season and look forward to seeing you again when we reopen on 2nd January 2014.

Community Led Plan

South Lakeland Mind would like to thank Rob Sandilands for his impressive fundraising ef forts during the Coniston Chill Swim. On 14th September Rob completed the gruelling 5.25 mile swim of Coniston and raised over £1,500 for us in the process. Well done, Rob, and thank you to all his generous sponsors,

The Grange-over-Sands Community Led Plan Group would like to take this opportunity to thank the community, businesses, the Grange-over-Sands C of E Primary School, Library and TIC staff, and of course Grange Now for their continued support in 2013. As a group we have managed to achieve all our 2013 planned activities and are now completing the analysis of your responses. We will then be liaising with Grange Town Council, SLDC, CCC, and are looking at publishing a completed Community Plan late spring/early summer 2014.

You may wonder why we are selling wonderful puddings (as produced for Fortnum and Mason) for £5 to help widows in Africa ! In Uganda, widows who have lost their husbands, either by death from Aids or motorcycle accidents (very common) or because their husband has left them are made destitute by the husband’s family coming and taking everything they possess.

We are selling these puddings : Zingy Lemon, Triple Chocolate, Triple Ginger, and Sticky Toffee for £5 each of which £2 from each sale is given to buy pregnant goats for these ladies. The lady enters into a contract to care for the goat and gives the kid, once one has been born, to the syndicate for another ‘widow’ to care for and breed from. Further kids are hers and once she has a herd of 5 goats she can resign from the

Cartmel Township Initiative The Cartmel Township Initiative (CTI) steering group was formed last summer with a brief to commission a study to address infrastructure and economic issues affecting Cartmel. This is being overseen by the Lower Allithwaite Parish Council as the need for such a study was identified as a priority in the 2013 Community Plan. Interviews to appoint a Planning Consultant have taken place and it is hoped that the firm of

Allies and Morrison can be commissioned to undertake the study. In particular they will be exploring ways in which the traffic and parking problems that face the village can be addressed for the benefits of residents, local businesses and growing numbers of visitors. Their research will involve consultations with residents and businesses to ensure that the most important issues are focussed upon and to guide practical outcomes. The aim is to publish the final study towards the end of 2014.

project and afford to buy a field or set up in business. The whole process is supervised by a reliable Project Overseer who ensures the woman cares for the goat and is determined to get out of poverty. All goats have regular veterinary checks and are certified well. You can order your puddings from your local church or organisation or from Keith Buckler who will be happy to give you more information or supply your organisation as required. Tel : 015395 30359. Funding has come from a range of local organisations and public groups which so far will cover two thirds the cost of the study. A further £10,000 is being sought so that the Consultant’s appointment can be confirmed as soon as possible. If anyone is interested in making a financial contribution or would like to know more about this initiative, please contact Phil Turner, Clerk to the Parish Council, at lapc.clerk@gmail.com or Barry Dean, CTI Chair, at dean265@btinternet. com. 100 reasons to say thank you

Grange and District Action Group

Grange resident Geoff Euers donated his 100th pint of blood on 12th December in Victoria Hall, Grange. According to the NHS, over 25% of us require a blood transfusion at least once in our lifetime and each blood donation can help as many as three people. The 100 donations Geoff has given equates to 47 litres of blood which could have helped as many as 300 people. Geoff is a keen long distance

cycler and goes swimming 2 or 3 times a week, ensuring he keeps fit and healthy. He used to work for BA in Manchester but, since retiring, lives in Sedgwick Court, Grange. Well done, Geoff, and here’s to many more pints! Currently only around 4% of adults in the UK give blood. Stocks of rare blood types such as B- are particularly low. To become a donor call 0300 123 23 23 or visit: www.blood.co.uk

Planning Application SL/2013/0691 – Berry Bank / Russell Armer Homes Ltd This application was scheduled to be heard on 19th December at theVictoria Hall, just as this issue of’ Grange Now’ goes to press, and doubtless you will be aware of the outcome even as you read this short note. Whatever that may have been, there are a large number of other sites that have been ‘allocated’ for housing in the town and surrounding villages (totalling in excess of 700 dwellings), and it is our intention to treat any further applications that come forward with the same searching microscope with which Berry Bank was reviewed. And I repeat that we understand the need for decent, affordable housing, for purchase or for rental. The undoubted cumulative effect that any future development throughout the whole of the Peninsula will have on traffic levels on the B5277 is clear to each and every resident, and we are particularly defensive of our tourist industry, the major lifeblood of the entire community. This whole campaign is only in its infancy; and many of us have learned a great deal. The people of Grange and beyond have been extremely supportive of us, with judicious funding and other forms of voluntary encouragement; including all those, past and present, at ‘Grange Now’. And I thank everyone for that. Here’s to the future…. For further information contact Peter Nightingale, the Secretary, on either 07751 087 292 or by e-mail – gos.housing.kbr@ gmail.com

Ingrowing toenails

Cartmel resident celebrates 103rd Birthday

An ingrowing toenail is one that pierces the flesh of the toe. It can feel as if you have a splinter, and can be extremely painful. In more severe cases, it can cause pus and bleeding. Ingrowing toenails most commonly affect the big toenail.Younger people are more likely to get it (as they pick their nails more, compared to older people who may not reach their toes!) If left untreated, the infection can spread to the rest of the toe. Fo r t h e m o s t b a s i c p a i n f u l a n d irritable ingrowingtoenail, a podiatrist will remove the offending spike of nail and cover with an antiseptic dressing. If the toe is too painful to touch, a podiatrist can inject a local anaesthetic before removing the offending portion of nail.To prevent an ingrowingtoenail cut your nails properly, it’s best to use nail nippers as they have a smaller cutting blade but a longer handle. Cut your nails following the natural shape of the nail and don’t cut too low at the edge or down the side. The corner of the nail should be visible above the skin. Use a nail file to smooth away any sharp edges. Next month: Diabetes and the feet

My dentist has recommended I have a dental implant. What are they? Dental Implants are the permanent and fixed solution to missing teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace one or multiple missing teeth. There are many reasons why you may need or want a dental implant. You may have been involved in an accident and lost a front or back tooth; you may have had a tooth extracted either recently or some time ago due to decay or fracture; or you may have a bridge or denture that frequently needs a dentists attention. A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jaw bone to replace the tooth’s natural root. It is used to support one or more false

It is estimated that 25,000 people in the UK will use mobiles, PC’s and tablets to get divorced this year. However, not every case is suitable for an online divorce and people should be wary. Peter Yates, Family Law Expert, explains: There are essentially five grounds for divorce. These are adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, having lived apart for more than two years (your spouse has to agree in writing) and having lived apart for more than five years (in which case there is no need for the spouse’s agreement). Divorce needn’t be difficult with the right advice and with a fixed fee

you will know exactly what you are paying for. If you both agree to the divorce you will usually not have to appear in court, but if the divorce is defended or if both of you petition, you may have to attend a court hearing. If you both agree to the divorce, you can apply for a decree nisi, an official certificate that says the judge agrees you can divorce. Six weeks after you have received this, you can apply for a decree absolute, the legal document that shows your marriage has ended. If you cannot reach a financial agreement, you might decide to involve a mediator to facilitate discussions, although they cannot offer legal advice. You can find a mediator through resolution.org.uk. PeterYates is a member of Resolution. If you cannot agree on how to divide

Once you have reached an agreement, whether with or without external help, your solicitor will need to draw up a consent order, which must be signed by each party and their respective solicitors. “A consent order is very important, it allows you to enforce clauses further down the line and can include a clean break order so that neither party can later make a claim. YOUR LETTERS Dear Editor,

Anyone who did not see the pantomime, Jack & the Beanstalk, missed a treat. This amateur presentation was as good as any professional production. We are fortunate to have so much talent among our young people. A great deal of effort by children and adults over months of hard work made for a colourful, fast-moving show. I was able to hear all the words spoken and sung clearly. All the children and young adults played their parts to perfection. This enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment was infectious. It made us laugh and forget our worries for a few hours. The pantomime was not just for children but for anyone young at heart. It was well worth waiting for the last bus on a cold and damp winter evening. Please support any future productions by Grange Youth Theatre Group and grange & District Amateur Operatic Society. Not many small towns can boast of such outstanding entertainment. Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor, On behalf of Eden House Children’s Hospice, the only children’s hospice in Cumbria, we may take this opportunity to thank the Grange & District Lions Club (District 105 BN) for their most generous donation of £1,000 to the hospice, which they presented to Reg and I at their presentation night onWednesday November 20th 2013, held at the Father Magner Rooms, St Charles. We were amongst other organisations that were also receiving gifts from this wonderful group of people, as the evening was a ‘sharing’ of all the Lions hard work throughout the year, raising money locally for so many worthy causes. Eden House Children’s Hospice is a very special place and the grange and District Lions’ gift will enable a continuing provision of a much-needed service to many children and their families in Cumbria. Eden House offers support to children and young people with life limiting conditions. We are so very grateful for the generous gift and thoughtful kindness the Grange and District Lions provide for so many. They also introduced, during the evening, their new venture called F.O.G.L. (Friends of Grange Lions), which anyone supporting all the great work they do can join and be kept informed of all the activities and news of this very special group of people. If you would like further information on this exciting new project, please contact Peter on 32048. Many thanks again to you all for all your hard work and caring generosity. Barbara & Reg Brown, Grange

Dear Editor, Keep Our Grange Special, I’d like to congratulate the Grange Now team on producing an excellent Christmas edition. However I read with some horror a small item on page 2 suggesting that Tesco might be seeking to site a store in Grange. When we moved to Lindale many peoples’ cars were sporting KOGS stickers – Keep our Grange Special, and special it has stayed. Many of the letters in Grange Now point to the positive reaction that residents and visitors alike receive when shopping in Grange town centre. I love shopping in Grange. I come on the 532 bus (another worrying story here) and buy real local products from

real specialist shops, delicatessen, greengrocer, butcher, hardware, fish stall, to name a few. Service is friendly and chatty, raising the spirits. Keeping town centres alive was the Women’s’ Institute Resolution in 2013 (SOS Town Centres). Recent TV News programmes have featured the dreadful problems facing many town centres which have large numbers of redundant shops, and may require some very radical solutions. Tesco supermarkets have a very bad environmental and social record, and have torn the soul out of many town centres. We should not let this happen to Grange. It seems to me that we may need to revive the KOGS campaign, to save the heart and soul of the special place that is Grange. Sylvia Woodhead, Lindale

Dear Editor, Grange Town Council gets a fair amount of criticism throughout the year - some of it misplaced because responsibility often lies with either SLDC or Cumbria CC - so now is the time to give it some praise. The efforts of the Town Hall staff in decorating the hall has to be applauded. There’s so much to admire and all involved have gone to great lengths to make it a really Christmassy place. I’m sure I echo the thanks of very many people in Grange and it set off the Flookburgh Band carol concert to fine effect. Thank you, indeed! Lawrie Woodley, Grange

Dear Editor, We went to the opening night of our ‘home grown’ pantomime, Jack & the Beanstalk, in December 2013, and what a real treat it was to watch a real live pantomime here in our town. The whole show was full of energy and colourful talent. Oh, yes it was! The age range in this show was amazing and even the youngest members were so focused and lively, entering into the ways of theatre with great gusto. There was lots of laughter, fun and good entertainment brought our way by a full compliment of young, enthusiastic people giving their all to this very popular pantomime. We would like to say a big thank you to you all for doing such a brilliant job. Naming each artist and production team would be difficult, because each one of you have brought so many different skills and talents to us, your appreciative audience. You are all equally wonderful. Our young people were so focused in their roles; it was a joy to see such enthusiasm and all totally enjoying themselves. That is so infectious, a true tonic and so needed in our society today. However, we felt quite disappointed for our young friends at the low numbers in the audience last year. In fact, on the Saturday night, which by tradition is normally very well supported, there were only the first four rows full. This we feel is so sad after all the hard work, rehearsals and calls beyond duty that all the young and ‘not so young’ have put into their production. So thank you once again to our superb Youth Theatre for all your dedicated hard work, commitment and professionalism in giving your Grange town a truly magnificent feast of ‘home grown’ entertainment and all that you do to raise money for so many needy charities in our community. God bless you all. Barbara & Reg Brown, Grange

Green light for Grange affordable homes M o re t h a n 4 0 n e w affordable homes to be built on the old Berners Pool site received the backing of SLDC’s planning committee at the start of December. The plan includes 43 houses and flats on the land off Berners Close, 32 of which will be available for affordable rent, while the other 11 will be available under a shared ownership arrangement. The plans for the new homes have been developed by Two Castles Housing Association in liaison with landowner SLDC and Grange Town Council, and progressed through the

Berners Grange Project Group, which includes district and town councillors. Earlier this month SLDC set a target of delivering 1,000 new affordable homes to rent and 1,000 jobs between 2015 and 2025.More than 3,000 people are currently looking for affordable homes to rent in South Lakeland, with an average of 34 bids for each property. A public consultation event was held and revisions to the scheme were made in light of the feedback received from residents. SLDC’s planning report said the design was of a traditional form

which would have a positive impact on the Grange-overSands Conservation Area. The terraces and buildings range from two to four storeys in height and there will be 43 parking spaces provided. The new homes could be ready by March 2015. CouncillorTom Harvey, chairman of Grange Town Council, said: “I’m really pleased that we are going to see the building of these much needed affordable homes in Grange. It’s important that we are focusing on brownfield sites such as Berners with sustainable links to the town and transport infrastructure.”

The Autumn Statement: Implications for Cumbria Parking Safety A c c o rd i n g t o S o u t h Lakes MP Tim Farron, Cumbria has gained from the Autumn Statement. He indicated a series of policies which are expected to benefit local people and boost the economy. These include a freeze in fuel duty until 2015; premises with rateable values of up to £50,000 receiving discounts worth £1,000 off bills for the next two years; the capping of business rates at 2%; plus a reoccupation relief which will help to halve rates for new tenants. Mr Farron also has welcomed the promise of funding for 20,000 new Higher Apprenticeship places and the announcement

County Matters

that more than 15,000 Cumbrian children in reception and years 1 and 2 will get free school meals. This is expected to save parents around £437 a year for each child. A further bonus: around £100 million of fines from the banks will be channelled into charities supporting the armed forces and emergency services. Mr Farron said:“Today’s Autumn Statement shows that we are finally turning the corner when it comes to the economy. After a tough three and a half years for the British public, growth is finally on the up – but we should not get complacent. “While on paper the figures look promising, the average family is still very much feeling the squeeze. That’s why today’s

Another year has passed and I hope I find you all in good health because from my own experience your health is the most important thing besides your family. I have arranged for the County to look at two possible traffic schemes at Park Road/Esplanade and Lindale Road at the entrance to the Town. These will involve road markings at these sites to remind drivers to observe the 30mph speed limit with the addition of temporary speed indicator devices to emphasize this.

The County Council BUDGET consultation road show will be coming to Grange on the 15th January when County Officers will be present to help and explain the proposals and give you a chance to share your views with them. I have just managed to find funding for a new seesaw on the kiddies playground on the promenade. This will be constructed in the spring in time for Easter for all our younger children to enjoy. Finally I would just like to wish you all a healthy and enjoyable 2014. Regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division.

Deputy Mayor’s Report The three events I have taken part in this month have been real community activities. The first was the evening event to celebrate the opening of the Christmas Tree Festival, held this year at St Paul’s Church. There was an amazing array of trees of all sizes and designs. I was flabbergasted at the imagination and ingenuity used to decorate the trees as well as the selection of materials and skills involved. Each tree reflected the theme of‘Count Your Blessings’ and each tree took a different slant on this. The evening was very enjoyable, being a mixture of singing and listening to Christmas music interspersed with delicious refreshments, as well as the opportunity to see all the wonderful trees. It was also wonderful to see Councillor bailey at the event, if only for a short time. A massive amount of thanks goes to Christine Harrison and her team for organising and manning this very special event.

And then there was the Christmas Tree lighting in the Ornamental Gardens. Despite the rather damp and depressing weather, families abounded, the singing was enthusiasticaly accompanied by the band and the sight of both the tree lit up and the arrival of Santa were greeted with noisy delight. Like the event at St Paul’s this too was organised and manned by volunteers, this time led by Robin Webster, to all of whom go our heartfelt thanks. For me the only hairy moments were standing in the road with a mic in my hand while cars whizzes past just feet away. They probably only actually went quite slowly but I did feel rather vulnerable. It certainly did not detract from my enjoyment of the evening, though and I am lucky enough to be able to see our lovely Christmas tree lit up from my front windows every evening until Twelfth night. And last, but by no means least was the Extravaganza! Despite the dreadful weather the town

Furness line electrification: an update Tim Farron has been working with the Furness Line Action Group to persuade the Government and the Office of Rail Regulation of the benefits of electrifying the Furness rail line. His recent campaign to electrify the line from Oxenholme the Windermere resulted in the agreement to conduct a feasibility study into electrification and he wants to build upon this success. Trains on electrified lines cost a third less to run than diesel trains, there are considerable savings in track wear and tear, and they result in nearly

announcements on free school meals and action to curb spiralling petrol prices are so welcome.” Labour MP for Barrow and Furness, JohnWoodcock, echoed the cost of living concerns: “Any economic growth is of course welcome, coming as it does after three years of flat-lining, but families and businesses are still feeling the effects of failed promises on the deficit, borrowing and growth. “The biggest disappointment today is that nothing substantial was done to address the cost of living crisis, with working people already £1,600 a year worse off under this government ‘ bills look set to continue to rise and wages to stagnate without real action.’

30% less carbon dioxide being emitted into the environment. Added to which, electrification will mean that trains can connect more efficiently into the rest of the national rail network. This could allow people in Grange and other towns along the line to travel much further without changing trains. The Furness line is considerably longer than

turned out to support the event, including carol singing at various venues and a whole host of things held in Albert Road and the Kents Bank Road car park. When we sent hundreds of balloons off into the grey skies at 3pm it took just seconds for them to head for the hills, disappearing over the fell while we watched. The highlight of the day for me was being able to watch the finals of ‘Grange has Talent’. The young people who took part were all amazing, displaying not only talent but musicality, nimbleness and imagination and real skill. We, the audience, loved them all. I have no idea how the judges managed to choose just three winners, they were all so fantastic. It was a privilege to shake hands with and congratulate them. I must thank all those involved in the organisation of the whole event. In spite of the rain, the wind and the cold we all had a fabulous day. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Tricia Thomas, Deputy Mayor. the Lakes line, thus the investment needed would be around 5 times larger. Clearly this won’t happen overnight. However, the line is vital to the communities which lie along it, improvements will take pressure off the A590 -one of the most dangerous roads in the North of England - and the economic argument is overwhelming. The Transport Minister, Patrick McLoughlin MP, has agreed to look into the issue. This is a major positive step but Tim has committed himself to continue applying pressure on ministers and the regulator to ensure the project moves forward.

Grange Now - January 2014 - Page 15

Following a recent incident on Main Street, Grange Now has been asked to point out that Inconsiderate parking on,or partially on,pavements causes real problems for the blind, the disabled and people with wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Tim Farron’s Column I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to an exciting 2014. As I write this I am not too sure how my Christmas has been as I am still looking forward to it but I have high hopes. To pick up from last month I have made some more progress on street lighting in villages. The Chief Executive and Network Strategy Director from Electricity Northwest met up with me at the House of Commons the other day. I impressed on them that although the £250,000 fund that they have made available for new poles in Cumbria was welcome it is nowhere near enough to replace all the poles with lights on that are under their control. In response they reassured me that they had no plans to remove the lights from existing poles and that the £250,000 was there just in case any of the poles did need to be moved. I think it is fair to say that it was a positive meeting. I have asked them to work with parish councils to ensure that if a pole needs replacing they have the money to do it and to ensure that no one has to suffer the worry of walking down dark streets which were previously well lit. As the weather turns colder could I urge you to investigate whether you qualify for home heating assistance. I have just seen a new survey that indicates that about 2,000 homes across Westmorland and Lonsdale are eligible to a number of benefits ranging from new insulation and boilers to a £135 discount on energy bills during the winter. This is open to a number of people on low incomes including families and pensioners. If you think it might include you please call the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99. Last year the homes that benefited made about £250 in savings on their bills, which I know would be a real help to many people. Finally a big congratulations to Allithwaite Primary School in managing to win £3,000 for new IT equipment. Their submission said that they wanted to use the money to buy tablet computers that could be used not just by the pupils but also by local residents. They are keen to ensure that people of all ages in the area are able to become familiar with using this stuff and get confident in using the internet, with all the benefits that this can bring. Added to which they want them to be able to use the school to learn this. This proposal certainly got my vote and obviously those of a lot of parents and residents of Allithwaite for it to have been so successful. As ever if there is anything that I can do to help you please contact me by writing to, Tim Farron, at Acland House, Smokehouse Yard, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or emailing me at tim@timfarron.co.uk. I wish you all the very best for 2014

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

There was a packed house for the December meeting of Allithwaite and CartmelWI where, after business was concluded, the members were given a brilliant demonstration of seasonal flower arranging by Mrs Joan Bentley. She produced four spectacular displays within less than an hour whilst also entertaining us with many anecdotes. At the end of the demonstration the arrangements, including one she had made earlier, were raffled for a local children’s charity. The meeting ended with tea and mince pies that had been baked by the committee. The next meeting is at 2.00pm on Tuesday 7th January when there will be ‘in house entertainment’.

Witherslack WI A lot of laughter was heard at the December Meeting when Magician Chris Winnick kept his audience spellbound with his illusions and tricks. These were designed for an audience of 5-year-olds going on 80. Chris started his magic at the age of 9, spending his pocket money sending away for tricks. We saw animals created in seconds from balloons, familiar card tricks, rope tricks and a beautiful white rabbit who stole the show. Finally, he sawed a lady in half. Brilliant! President Ann Walshaw wished everyone a Happy Christmas. January’s speaker: Catherine Gordon on the charity “South Lakeland Mind”. Competition: An Unwanted Christmas Present! NB. South Lakeland Mind

This month saw a very kind donation of a Seasonal Affective Disorder light box for use in our drop-in sessions. Many thanks to the kind Grange lady who donated this to us – you know who you are! As Grange Now goes to print we are preparing for the drop in Christmas lunches and our very first coffee morning on Tuesday 17th December. We hope to raise a healthy amount with all proceeds going towards the delivery of our services. January can be a difficult month. Grange Lecture Society

John Pilkington’s entertaining travel talks are a regular feature of the Society’s programmes and he returned on 26th November to give the annual Nevile Burwell Memorial lecture entitled ‘Georgia to Afghanistan’. This was an exciting and informative account of the peoples and places encountered during his latest journey following a spectacular branch of the Silk Road from the Caucasus across the Caspian Sea to Samarkand, then turning south east to explore the High Pamirs of Afghanistan before ending up at the source of the river Oxus. As ever, John’s lecture was accompanied by his own stunning photography. This was followed on 3rd December by an illustrated talk on ‘Our Energy Future’ in which geologist David Edwards spoke lucidly and authoritatively about the various energy choices facing us (nuclear, fossil fuel, renewable) and evaluated their feasibility. In particular, he underlined the devastating consequences for societies when their energy is curtailed. On 14th January Gail Morecambe will talk about‘Life with my Father Eric Morecambe’ and on 28th January well known antiques expert Eric Knowles will present ‘An Evening with Eric Knowles’. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch This month was our Christmas Meeting which we celebrated with a Jacob’s Join. Our members arrived laden down with good things to eat which were placed on a table set out ready for our buffet lunch. Our colourful outfits for the Pixies washing line, started at last month’s meeting, were pegged up to decorate the room We started with our usual business meeting and then members talked about things of interest they had bought or seen at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate. During the coffee break we nibbled on chocolate biscuits and voted for our favourite pixie outfit. The winner was Denise Gates who won a Reticule voucher. Members then took part in a quiz made up of anagrams of embroidery words. This was a light hearted affair and clues were allowed! After the quiz we cleared our tables ready to enjoy the food which we helped ourselves to from the buffet table. It was delicious as usual and many of us went back for second helpings! It was an enjoyable meeting and we all wished each other a Happy Christmas before we left. The next meeting is Tuesday 7th January when we will be making a book with Elizabeth Shorrock. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Anne Covell on 01539 737049.

Church News Grange Methodist

Have you heard about the charity ‘Mary’s Meals’? Mr Duncan Hamlett came to the Open Fellowship at Grange Methodist Church, on Thursday, 21st November, and by slides and a video presentation, told about the work. Believing that children learn better when they are fed, Mary’s Meals provides a lunch, locally sourced, now for 822,000 children around the world. The number is growing every day. For some of the children, this is the only meal they get in the day, and those cooking and serving it are all local volunteers. This all started when a young schoolgirl complained about her school dinners! Mr Clifford Dadson chaired the meeting and the pianist was Ann Clark. Grange Women’s Network on

St Charles

When you read this, Christmas will have come and gone and another tear will have started. I hope you ad a trouble-free and peaceful Christmas, thanking God for all you had. I hope and pray 2014 will be kind to you all. Though I suspect hurt is still felt by a few supporters of St Cuthbert’s, and for them I won’t be the flavour of the month, however, the dust for the large majority of parishioners has, I believe, generally settled and Masses at St Charles have certainly benefitted from the increased numbers. Thank you to all those who have recognised and supported the importance of parish community worship on the Lord’s Day. The future of St Cuthbert’s is under discussion, but it is early days. Ken Taylor gave an excellent slide and talk exposition of Angela’s and his holiday trip to Canada and Alaska. An

Tuesday (Nov 26th) took the title ‘Treasures’. Previously, the secretary had invited ladies to bring a treasure and be prepared to explain its value to the meeting. There were rings and necklaces reminding folks of a previous generation and love of grandmas and mothers. One was a copper box inlaid with silver and lined with wood; another was an embroidered picture; there was a shell from the Sea of Galilee, and so it went on. Everyone agreed the value of the gifts were the memories they generated. Marion Briddock chaired the meeting and Elizabeth Armstrong played the piano. Old Hutton Ladies Choir visited the Open Fellowship meeting at Grange Methodist Church on Thursday 5th December. They presented a varied programme of Christmas music which was very much appreciated by the congregation. The pianist

was Lynn, who travels from Underbarrow to the rehearsals and concerts. A highlight was two piano solos, by a husband of a choir member. The first, the music from the film ‘Ladies in Lavender’, and the second a Christmas medley he had arranged. The concert was followed by a lovely buffet supper provided by members of the committee. OnTuesday 10th December the Women’s Network of Grange Methodist Church visitedAbbot Hall at Kents Bank and enjoyed a Christmas lunch together. This was followed by a Carol Service arranged by Jill Ludlow. It included appropriate Christmas poetry and a reading from Luke chapter 2, in Black Country dialect. Thanks were expressed by Marion Briddock to the staff of Abbot Hall and to those who took part in the service.

American-type supper of burgers, sausages and dessert was the icing on the cake of a most enjoyable evening. The three ladies who provide a monthly lunch for the elderly, widows and widowers were themselves treated to an early Christmas lunch at Holker Hall, arranged by Deacon George and his wife, Elizabeth. The Parish Priest heard there was food at hand and so got himself included! The new lights in the knave and transepts at St Charles have been a great success. The sanctuary is the next area to be tackled! We look forward to the visit of the June Baker singers with their Christmas programme including the Hallelujah Chorus. The Mass for the Feast of Christ the King was given an extra lift with the Lancaster Lourdes Singers offering a change of music which was much appreciated by the congregation. The ‘Good News of Jesus

Christ’ programme has been well received by the faithful 20+ regulars. Sadly, people do not realise what they are missing. However, fortunately, it is still a free country. The Church is very much into a period of transition and it is a great opportunity for young people, in fact all people, to accept the challenge, step out in faith and commit themselves to the Good Lord without fear, knowing, as the Lord said:“I am with you always, yes, to the end of time.” As Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman said: “To live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.” With every blessing for a healthy and trouble-free 2014. God Bless, Fr P. PS Two TV aerials met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The Church ceremony was average, but the reception was brilliant! PPS A committee: a group of the unfit appointed by the unwilling to do the unnecessary!

The annual Edward Bear Christmas party in the Parish Hall was enjoyed by almost 30 children accompanied by their mothers and grannies. Plenty of food and fun with traditional party games created a festive atmosphere made complete by the arrival of Santa bearing gifts (kindly provided by the Mothers Union) for all of the children. The Edward Bear Club, the mother and toddler group that meet every first and third Tuesday afternoons in the church meeting room, is approaching its fourteenth birthday and there will be a special service held at St Paul’s on Sunday 19th January at 11am to mark this event. The candlelight Carol Service was certainly an occasion to remember. The augmented church choir, numbering about 25 voices, sang some most interesting pieces, notably ‘Adam lay Abounden’, a 15th century English carol with Middle English lyrics set to Peter Warlock’s melody and also John Joubert’s lively arrangement of the Galician carol, Torches. Plenty of more conventional carols were included in the programme, with the congregation joining in enthusiastically with the choir. After so much exuberant singing the mulled wine, served with mince pies after the service, was gratefully received! The Cartmel Peninsular Team Ministry Epiphany service will take place at Cartmel Priory on the 6th January at 3.30 pm and all will be made most welcome. If anyone would like to know more about the Bible and its relevance to life today, Rector Nick Ash is holding an interesting four week course on Thursday afternoons commencing the 16th January at 2 pm in the church meeting room. Each session will consist of a talk and video presentation on an aspect of the Bible followed by questions and refreshments. We look forward to hosting the St Paul’s Patronal Service on Sunday, January 26th at 11am when we will be joined by our friends from Lindale. This will be followed at 1 pm with lunch in the Parish Hall.

Many of us start the New Year with plans for a healthy new lifestyle. After a Christmas filled with food and fun, the inner voice calls us to behave and redress the balance. Making plans for a healthier lifestyle is multi faceted. We have many exercise options - from cycling to swimming, walking or even gentle activities at home. Less obvious aspects of good health include eating well, fresh air and creating a bit of ‘me’ time. Perhaps a relaxing massage once a month or a brisk walk down Grange promenade. You might consider yoga classes, the local dance school or even joining a gym. Right on our doorstep we have the mountains, lakes and seashore which present many opportunities for fun activities in the outdoors.

NEW YEAR, HEALTHY NEW YOU!

If you really feel the urge to burn those calories just get on a bike and cycle up Bigland Hill. It doesn’t have to be so severe though. How about asking a friend to join you or just plug in your favourite music to spur you on? Try some healthier choices next time you’re in the supermarket, breathe deeply every morning, put a smile on your face and you’re on your way. One thing is certain: providing you are medically able and don’t overdo it, a healthy lifestyle has many benefits. Of course some aspects of our health and vitality are governed by our genes and how our mother behaves during pregnancy, but many lifestyle factors including fitness, diet and weight

ort School Rep Lindale Pre-School Nursery Lindale Pre-School Nursery had great fun with its ‘Old Uncle Sam’ Nativity play in December, giving all the young children a chance to sing, perform, dress up and celebrate Christmas. There were lots more festive goings-on in the run-up to Christmas, including craft activities to make some decorations and pictures. The topic of the half-term was ‘People Who Help Us’, so children learned about emergency services and made cardboard fire engines and police cars.We were also very grateful to Colin at Bay Search and Rescue, who hosted a wonderful trip for all the children to the organisation’s headquarters at Flookburgh. Children learned all about the sands and how people are rescued from them, and were able to sit in some of the vehicles used by the rescue team and try on the suits and helmets used by the volunteers. For any more information about the nursery or to enquire about places for your children, call 07977 203513 or email lindalepreschoolnursery@hotmail.co.uk

Are you interested in the psychic world?

Local Nurse Rosemary Harrison has recently moved away from the caring world to help and support people with their spiritual world and all things psychic. Rosemary says ‘I initially became interested in the psychic world through observations made whilst nursing and unanswered questions around advanced intuition between close families. Much scepticism exists around intuition and psychic abilities, as people are cautious that the reader is not genuine and only serves to trick or fool them. Rosemary adds ‘if you had told me twenty years ago that I would have this interest and leave the NHS to undertake this work, I would have told you you were mad. But the more I study the more I know I’m on the right track; and hope that my nursing background gives me some integrity and credibility. Rosemary is currently studying mindfulness through both meditation & reiki; amongst other studies such as psychic development and well-being coaching. School Report

Allithwaite Primary School We have received an early Christmas present this year as we were successful in receiving a £3000 grant from the Lloyds Community Fund to support sharing ICT skills with our community. Many thanks to everyone who voted for us and supported us in our application for the grant. Bob Hope once said that “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness.” This was very much evident as our Singing Squad shared some very special moments with the residents of Boarbank Hall and the Old Vicarage, singing carols and festive songs. It has also been wonderful for some of our children to take part in the Grange Extravaganza’s talent show. We have all been crafting Angels for the village

Angel festival taking place throughout Advent which has been a great success. Our PTA organised a fantastic Christmas Fair which was a great opportunity for the Allithwaite community to once again come together, raising over £1380 for our PTA. How wonderful to be able to join with others and send shoe boxes to Romania again this year. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without our Carol service including Year 3 and 4 playing their brass instruments, guitars, flutes, choir and all of our children joining the congregation to celebrate Christmas. We have ended the year with our Nativity play and our open day sharing our work this term. As the term has drawn to a close Year 5 and 6 held a Victorian Day where our

Sikles school children welcoming Sara and Paula.

T h e re wa s g re a t excitement in Grange Primary School yesterday as a live video link connected the Year 6 children to their teacher, Mrs Whinfield, in Nepal. Paula Whinfield is there as part of the schools work with the British Council who have awarded the school the prestigious International Schools Award Foundation Level. Paula’s travels have seen her first visit Kathmandu, then Pokhara and finally a very bumpy 6 hour jeep ride to Sikles. Sikles is a mountain village located to the north east of Pokhara, at about 2000 meters elevation (Scafell Pike is 978m) in the shadow of Annapurna II.It is a large Gurung village and a well-preserved

example of traditional Gurung culture.Paula is accompanied by Dr Sara Parker from Liverpool John Moores University, a friend of the school who has a long standing relationship with the village of Sikles and is able to introduce Paula to many villagers and officials to enhance Paula’s experience and our children’s learning. During the live video link yesterday morning all the children got to ask Mrs Whinfield a question about her trip; questions about food, weather, the local school and its facilities were all asked and answered. The boys were keen to know if they could play football at school in Sikles, the local teacher Gehendra Gurung told us that they can!

children experienced a typical Victorian school day, a far cry from the way lessons are taught now! It was a great eye opener for our children which culminated in a fantastic piece of writing shared with parents at the end of the day.

Mrs Whinfield said she had been overwhelmed by the amazing warm reception that she received in the village. She added that both the schools are very excited to be working together reciprocally to learn about and from each other’s cultures and to expand our global learning programmes Mr Colin Milner (the retired head teacher at Grange) and Mrs Milner were welcomed back to school by Mrs Summers while MrsWhinfield is away. The Grange / Sikles link originated during the Milners’ time at Grange and they were delighted to see it continue and grow under the leadership of Mrs Summers. Mr and Mrs Milner said “It was great to be able to spend time in a successful Skype communication with Sikles and it’s a privilege to be part of such a marvellous project.” Dr Parker set up a photography project in Sikles and if anyone has any old but working cameras or mobile phones they can be donated to the project and given a second life in Nepal. They can be dropped off at Grange Primary during school hours.

Lindale CE Primary School December at Lindale CE Primary School was packed full of Christmas activities, including this year’s ambitious festive play— Silent Night. Set in Austria in the 18th century, it told the story of how the wellknown Christmas carol came to be written. The cast of villagers, schoolmasters, parish priests, nativity characters, mice and snowflakes performed their parts brilliantly over three performances at Lindale Village Hall, learning their lines to perfection and singing with gusto. Following it, the half-term was rounded off with a Christmas fair, a festive party for all the children and a carol service at St Paul’s church in the village. Before all that, the half-term followed a theme of caring for others and our local community. Children from Years 4, 5 and 6 joined in with the Grange Fell Care Day project, learning how to coppice safely and helping to tidy up Lime Kiln Woods. They followed it up by making some bird boxes to

provide food and shelter for birds during the winter months. In November, the school raised nearly £200 for Children in Need, through activities including a talent show, pyjama wearing and a senior and junior ‘Bake Off’. Winners in the children’s section for decorated cupcakes were William and Hannah Dykes, while Lisa Jefferson won a keenly contested grown-ups competition for the ultimate chocolate cake. Children have also been thinking of others by filling shoeboxes to send to Romania for the ‘Boxes of Hope’ Christmas appeal; and by thinking about safety in school. They discussed ways to make sure there is no bullying, and have been learning about how to use the internet safely in school and at home, with talks for older children from Childline and a presentation for parents. The friends of the school group have produced an excellent cookbook, packed with delicious recipes from parents. Copies cost just £4 and are available from the village shop.

Firstly, we hope that everyone had a great Christmas and send all our good wishes for 2014. We have lots of classes on offer from January including some NEW ones such as a Beginners Pilates class from January 13th with Sue Hotchkiss. She is also starting a second Pilates class on Thursdays at 10:15am. We have a one day Nuno Felt the easy way at Cartmel Village Hall on the 25th January with Jane Crowe. I am sure many of you will have been lucky enough to be bought the latest electrical gizmos and we are offering additional beginners classes on subjects such as iPad and iPhone as well as eBay, so call us to reserve your place. We also have some classes at Castle Head including a one day workshop on Willow Weaving on the 25th January, a Beginners guide to the night skies on the 25th Jan and A Guide to the winter skies with an intro to Astro Photography on the 18th Jan. We are trying to get regular Sugarcraft classes going with trained pastry chef Dorothy King who runs her own cake decorating business. Times would be 4 hours, not 6 as advertised and we are taking names to gauge interest. We still have limited space on the Upholstery workshop due to start on the 25th Jan. We have an exciting range of art classes including a NEW class, Life Painting in Oils and Acrylics, due to start on the 8th January. If you fancy doing something new and interesting why not come on the one day,

Grange Chamber of Trade expressed shock and outrage at even the suggestion of removing the subsidy from such an essential life-line, particularly for the older folk in the area. The County Council’s proposal, they say, also runs counter to the polices of most sensible local authorities who encourage the use of local transport and discourage car owners from clogging narrow streets. The inevitable resulting loss of retail business in the town is something they cannot even contemplate whilst the local economy remains in its current state, Grange Now was told.

Local resident Peter Robinson of the Kendal & District Bus User Group wanted to make sure our readers are aware that, as well as the withdrawal of bus subsidies, there is another implication in the consultation document - proposition 19 is to withdraw all travel assistance between home and school or college for 16 to 19 year old students, starting with new students in September 2014. As there is no education provision for this age group in the Grange & district area all senior school students would be affected. The Victoria Hall CCC Budget Consultation on 15th January is from 3.30 to 7pm.

Lancashire Day

County of Lancaster more than 800 years ago and has been described by the Friends of Real Lancashire as ‘one of the youngest counties’. The introduction of administrative counties in 1974 created a new county of Lancashire which only partly covers the traditional region. The FORL are keen to point out that no legislation has ever changed the area or boundaries of the traditional county of Lancashire. To find out more,www.forl.co.uk

On 27th November Lancashire Day was celebrated on the post office steps in Grange to commemorate the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to parliament. Town criers across the original county read out the Lancashire Day Proclamation to mark the date. Lancashire was established as the

We also have a NEW Level 3 Award in Education and Training at Cartmel, an ideal way to improve your employment skills to gain a nationally recognized qualification. If you’ve over indulged over the festive period and fancy cutting down to get in trim, why not enrol on our Vegetarian cookery class, due to start 15th Jan run by popular tutor, Julie Woodburn. For those who fancy a more academic course, why not enrol on the thought provoking Moral Philosophy class which starts 14th Jan at Ulverston Business Centre, looking at various issues such as abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, animal rights and political violence as well as ethical consistency, objectivity and truth. Another NEW class is Visual storytelling which looks at the potential of graphic storytelling, exploring visual language to produce narrative with sequential images, due to start 18th Jan. If you also have a little one aged between 18 months and 3 years why not enroll on our Didi Dots course which runs on Tuesday afternoons at Grange Parish Hall with Lucy Everett of the Dance Atikk, It runs between 2 and 2:45 so ideal for the school run if you have older children. We are restricted in space now so have many more things on offer so phone us to find out more and re-book for your classes.
