Letter from the Editor Well a few surprises this month as you will have now discovered.
The shiny paper has been on test in the last two issues. A mixture of feedback but mostly positive so this month we’ve gone shiny paper throughout. The main reason is that photographs appear sharper. We have also increased size and gone full colour. This is in response to feedback from you, our readers, who have said that the writing is too small. So hopefully you like the changes but please let us know. The good news for Catherine our editorial and features writer is that she has been offered a full time position with Mind, the mental health charity. Many of you will know that she has worked there part time for some years. It’s good news for her as that is her career choice but bad news for us here at Grange Now as we are losing her. In the short time I have been at Grange Now Catherine has been a tremendous asset to the paper with a calm, efficient approach and a tenacious observance of good grammar. May I welcome David Boyer from Kents Bank who appears for the first time this month as our new cartoonist. David’s work is original, funny and cuts to the quick of local issues. If you need an artist with a keen eye and a quick wit, please let us know and we’ll put you in touch. Perfect for a present with a difference. We have a ‘sports in our community’ feature this month. If we have missed your activity or club then please get in touch. It’s a great time of year to start something new so I hope you find something of interest. Your contributions to the paper are welcome on the understanding we are clear to publish them both in the paper and on the website at www.grangenow.co.uk at our discretion. Sadly the Bookshelf and Tim Farron’s column were not included this month due to space limitations but these are published on our website. Thank-you to Kerstin, Catherine and Glenn for all the extra effort required this month to resize the paper. You are a great team. Happy Valentines (if you believe in all that…..) or just Happy February if you prefer, Chris. - chris@grangenow.co.uk

Information Centre change It has been proposed (and agreed by a majority vote of councillors at the January Town Council meeting) to move the Town Council office downstairs to share space with the Information Centre. This will mean a two-thirds reduction of the area for the Information Centre but as you will read in their report below, there shouldn’t be much difference to services provided and goods stocked. The Town Council officers will be gaining a higher profile and easier accessibility to the public. All well and good and hopefully so but the cost is likely to be added to Grange council tax payers bill via the precept, which means residents will be paying for the move. The precept has already increased by over 60% since 2010/11. Grange Council Tax is now 40% of that levied by SLDC. The office move is suggested to cost between £12,500 to £17,000. The vacated office on the first floor could be let to help offset the cost of the move downstairs over a period of time Grange Now has also learnt that the additional £12,500 of expenditure for the move in the current financial year means the council’s spending projection for 2013/14 will show a deficit of over £21,000 and can only be financed by raiding emergency reserves. Should the cost rise to £17,000 the deficit would accordingly rise to more than £25,000. There is already an attractive and inviting Information Centre (previously known as the Tourist Information Centre) in situ with council staff offices upstairs. A
previous Town Council agreed that council officers would make themselves available by walking downstairs to anyone infirm or disabled and unable to walk upstairs. Preliminary costs for a stair lift or an elevator were investigated to see if either were feasible but it was found the costs would be too high. The TIC was saved from closure by the Town Council a few years ago, when South Lakeland pulled the plug. Now the cost is borne by Grange Town Council (i.e. counciltax payers) with the necessary and valuable assistance of volunteers. Grange Now learns that sales have been dropping in the Information Centre since 2011, as visitors increasingly use the internet to plan their holidays. Grange Town Council has the task of providing and running services previously undertaken by the District Council. It also owns and manages the Victoria Hall (Grange’s only item of silver left in the much decried local government changes of 1974). Apart from the income received from letting the Hall, thanks to the foresight of a previous GTC, it was the first council in the county (and possibly the country) to provide a Police Office, when Cumbria Constabulary closed the police station. Keeping all the services going is a drain on the Town Council’s budget, the wages and salaries bill being the largest single element. It can’t be an easy job to decide where cuts have to be made.
T.I.C. Comment As you may have realised the Information Centre is temporary closed. This is due to the exciting refurbishment that is taking place. Whilst we are closed there will be a small selection of rail and bus timetables, free walk leaflets and some general information available during opening hours in the entrance of the Victoria Hall. You can also contact us on the following e-mail address grangeinfocentre@yahoo.co.uk Whilst the Information Centre will be reduced in overall size we are delighted that the future of the service has been secured and that we will remain open and running our normal opening hours throughout the year. We will be sharing office space with the town council team who will be moving downstairs making the Council more accessible and visible to the public.
We will still be stocking our usual range of goods: maps, books, walks leaflets and information of the area along with accommodation listings and cards and goods with a local feel from some of our talented artists in the area. Our volunteers will be on hand with their extensive knowledge to help you get the most out of your stay or to help generally with anything that is needed by our residents. We look forward to seeing you all shortly and thank you for the support you have given to the Information Centre since it was saved from closure by Grange Town Council who are committed to keeping this valuable service open. Lynne Harrison-Speight, Grange Information Centre Manager 015395 34026
At the recent consultation meeting at the Victoria Hall, dozens of local people expressed their concerns to representatives from Cumbria County Council, who have invited the public to have their say on proposed budget cuts. Many local residents turned up to find out more details of the proposed cuts to bus subsidies, particularly whether or not it was already ‘a done deal.’ Two documents were available for residents to complete. The feedback
form on the budget consultation document itself and also a passenger survey. As reported in last month’s Grange Now there are many implications if bus services are cut. From loneliness for older residents, access to health care, younger people getting to college and tourists connecting out from the railway stations or central Grange to the smaller villages. The increase in the number of houses proposed
for the area will of course only aggravate the problem. Looking ahead the matter of Council cut backs including the bus services will be decided at a full council meeting mid February. Whatever is agreed will then take effect in the financial year immediately following. Without doubt cutting the bus subsidies would have a negative effect for many people in the area. There have been large scale protests and petitions across the county so let’s hope the council think again.
County Matters
effect on our rural life here in the Cartmel Peninsula. I agree with these comments and I have been informed by colleagues all over the County that this is the feedback they are receiving. I hope that the Lib/Lab Administration will now listen to all our views and find savings from other areas and preserve our rural bus services. The two highways schemes which I mentioned in my last report relating to Park Road/ Esplanade and Lindale Road after consultation with the Town Council
will now be implemented by the County Highways team. I will also be presenting a similar scheme to the Upper Allithwaite Parish Council which will cover High and Low Newton and hopefully this will be accepted as well. Lindale Playground Group have asked me for help in finding funding for their last phase in the playground redevelopment on the Lindale playing fields. I hope to have some positive news for them by the time I write my next report. Regards, Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor, Grange Division
Bus cuts - A step too far?
I would like to thank all those residents who contributed to the County Budget Consultation especially those who attended the session in the Victoria Hall on the 15th January The County Officers present were kept busy all afternoon and in to the early evening supplying information and returning forms. The main theme that emerged from your comments was that cutting bus subsidies and consequently services would have a devastating
‘Holidays For Dogs’ what it is and how it works It’s a brilliant concept that started about twenty years ago, where a dog lives in a normal home environment and gets cared for like one of the family, while their owners are on holiday.
And here in Cartmel, we have our very own ‘Holidays for Dogs’, which is run by Wendy Warwick at Top Dog Sitters Ltd (now in its fourth year). Wendy previously had the same business in Surrey 14 years ago, so understands the importance of finding that ‘special’ holiday home. How does it work? Every dog is different (as owners appreciate), so Top Dog Sitters start by learning as much about your dog as possible. Its habits, likes, dislikes and they then talk through the homes they have
available, to make sure they find the one that suits your dog the best. They arrange for you to visit, so you can make sure you think the home is ‘perfect’ as well. They have various homes available – for the active, out-going dogs and for the shy, retiring ones. But the most popular are the homes that only have one dog to stay at a time, as they get all the time and attention, and don’t have to share their holiday home with anyone else! See below for contact details.
Parish Hall Closure
After a year-long consultation process with the community, it is with regret that the Parochial Church Council (PCC) has unanimously decided to close the Parish Hall for lettings with effect from 31st July 2014. It was not an easy decision to make as the PCC knows that the Parish Hall is a valued part of the community of Grange. With several other meeting spaces in the near vicinity, however, the Parish Hall is no longer financially viable in the medium to long term. The clinic and the Cartmel Peninsula Team office will remain open in the Parish Hall building until an alternative use is found for the building or the premises are sold.

Investment Matters By Jason Crane DipPFS AIFP
According to Nationwide Building Society the average price of a UK home increased by 8.4% during 2013. Whilst this is welcome news for homeowners (although some would argue property remains overvalued) it adds further pressure to potential Inheritance Tax (IHT) liabilities. Although property prices are rapidly rising, the IHT threshold (known as the ‘nil rate band’), at £325,000 per person is not, and is set to remain at that level until 2019. Above this limit, estates are taxed at 40%. The result of course is that more of a family’s wealth is paid in tax. For married couples or civil partnerships, any unused nil rate band can be passed onto a surviving spouse, meaning that the amount of an estate that remains free of IHT could be up to £650,000. At first sight the nil rate band appears extremely generous, and for many it will cover their entire estate value; however, it is important to remember that your estate is made up of all of your assets; property, savings, investments etc. In addition to this any significant gifts made from your estate within 7 years of death will be brought into the overall IHT calculation. For those whose estate would be chargeable to IHT; should your assets continue to increase in value faster than the nil rate band increases then only 60% of growth will remain for your beneficiaries. From income tax to value added tax (VAT), we pay tax on earnings throughout our lives, to then have to see a further 40% paid to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is far from ideal. As with all taxes, careful Financial Planning can help to minimise or even mitigate altogether any future IHT liability. You can give away up to £3,000 a year, which is known as your annual allowance, and this will be immediately exempt from IHT (If you do not use your allowance one year, you can carry it forward to the next (only one year can be carried forward)). There is also a small gift
exemption, meaning you can give up to £250 to as many people as you like. Wedding gifts up to £5,000 for parents, £2,500 for grandparents and £1,000 for everyone else are eligible as well, as are donations to qualifying charities. Gifts of cash or assets worth more than the annual allowance will also be exempt as long as you survive for seven years from the date of the gift (not quite as straightforward if the gifts are made to a Discretionary Trust). These are known as potentially exempt transfers. ‘Gifts out of income’ are free from IHT; the gifts must form part of normal expenditure, be made out of income and they cannot reduce your standard of living. Spending capital and/or income is perhaps the easiest way to reduce your estate; however, it is important to remember that your estate includes all your assets, therefore if you spend on an item of value your estate value is likely to remain the same or indeed may increase if the item purchased could be a form of investment (for example a valuable painting). Although, as noted above, there are allowances available, they may not be significant enough to have much of an effect on your personal liability. IHT planning can be very complex; however, there are many ways to reduce any future liability, perhaps even to nil, leaving more of your estate to your beneficiaries and less to HMRC. IHT is not related to age; if you think you have an IHT issue, or you are very likely to have one in the future, the earlier you start to put plans in place will determine the level of tax you could save your chosen beneficiaries.

Kents Bank Road rumpus Poor old Kents Bank Road, from Cross Street to Pig Lane, for years the poor relation of Grange as far as any interest has been taken in traffic management or calming, pavement widening, a crossing or any road safety feature come to that. Pedestrians and drivers both suffer. Despite trees being removed in St Charles Field - to possibly allow, as Father Parker said at the time, for SLDC to widen the narrow stretch of pavement as a safety measure, Grange Now has learnt some trees have to go back! Something to do with a planning issue apparently. Cars are parked legitimately along one side of the road (at least for an hour) but this narrows the carriageway considerably. Delivery lorries can cause havoc especially near the junction with Albert Road. Tradesmen’s vehicles parked adjacent to the junction with Main Street at lunchtimes, to grab a take-away meal add to the mayhem. Vehicles attempting to go in both directions at the same time cause the majority of holdups. There really is only room for one way. So could this be the answer? A One-Way for this stretch of Kents Bank Road has been mooted before but never got further than the pages of Grange Now with a plan by the Town Council when the late, lamented Frank Brooks was Town Clerk. Being Grange, naturally reasons against a one way included an argument about which way! Clockwise or anticlockwise and whether it should also encompass the top end to Cox’s Corner as well. (Jury still out on that). If Kents Bank Road became one way cars could still park as they do now, or bays could be created alternately along both sides of the road creating chicanes which would result in a natural traffic calming. Pavements could be widened and a crossing created
(if still necessary). Another, surely much less popular option, would be to double yellow both sides of the road which should at least ensure the car park is fully utilised. Maybe this is SLDC’s cunning plan. If that wasn’t all, the defunct British Legion premises on Kents Bank Road could become another convenience store which has raised hackles and delight in equal measures. Taking a straw poll of local mums Grange Now found that the majority supported this, especially if it was to be a lowcost convenience store. ‘I know we have fantastic independent shops,’ said one mum, ‘But I can’t afford to shop in them. The convenience stores we currently have can’t compete on prices with larger supermarket chains so I have to drive to Kendal or Barrow. I’d much rather be able to shop more economically in Grange.’ Another mum told us, ‘I wish it was an Aldi coming!’ However it was also agreed a Booth’s store would benefit the town. ‘There is room for both,’ was the main opinion. It will certainly give all of us more choice to shop locally. Poor old Kents Bank Road. It does need a fairy godmother to wave a magic wand, maybe a bustling new convenience store could be the answer. It will no doubt encourage more traffic, pedestrian and vehicular from the centre of town - but you never know, maybe the new store would be encouraged to pay for some long-needed improvements to our poor relation. Why not give us your opinion?
SLDC has given the company behind the application for a convenience store on Kents Bank Road, in the old British Legion premises, (no confirmation it is Tesco by the way), until the end of January to come back with some amendments to their original application regarding the siting of bins and noise level assessment.
Simon Fawcett, planning officer, told Grange Now, ‘If this isn’t forthcoming by the deadline then the application will be refused. Of course we could be asked to extend the period which we can do. If we receive the amendments by the end of January the application will go before the Planning Committee on the 27th February.’
Mr Fawcett confirmed the application was for A1, A2 & A3 use as reported last month (shops, hot & cold food premises and professional/business premises) but said the council hadn’t been told on whose behalf the application is being made. ‘It wouldn’t make a difference even if we knew,’ he said. ‘The application for a convenience store will be judged purely on whether it would be acceptable in that location.’
Policing Update
Please therefore moderate your speed and use the car parks, especially the one on Kents Bank Road which is now 20p for half an hour. Local residents have also brought to our attention the anti-social use of the car parks in Grange, especially in the evenings. We have been patrolling these areas much more frequently and have had positive feedback from many of the residents who live nearby.
We are living in an area that is very safe and suffers little crime. We are however keen to set up more No Cold Calling Zones and a number of locations are being looked at in both the town and the villages. You can use our non-emergency number of 101 if you want to get in touch and we will soon be having regular surgeries at our office in the Victoria Hall. PCSO 5186 Firth

We have again been asked by local residents to focus on both speeding and parking. We have arranged a few days every month when we will be out and about dealing with these perennial problems. Deputy Mayor’s Report
Norman John Bailey Norman John Bailey, Mayor of Grange, who has often been described as the ‘Gentleman Mayor’, has sadly passed away at St Mary’s Hospice. The hospice was actually one of the Mayor’s chosen charities along with Bay Search and Rescue, monies for these being raised by the Chamber of Trade events and the recent Christmas Tree Festival. Married in 1957 to Jackie, he leaves three children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Born in Sheffield Norman moved to Morecambe as a boy and attended Lancaster Grammar and, later, Morecambe Grammar Schools. He went to Newcastle University, gaining his degree in metallurgy. After National Service in the R.A.F., Norman joined Richard Thomas and Baldwins and moved to the steel town of Scunthorpe. He then went on to be Chief Metallurgist and Quality Control Manager of an integrated steel works and was an advisor to the design team for Anchor Steel Works - the jewel in the steel industry’s crown. In the 1970’s Norman had a change of direction and went on to be General Manager of a Building Group in the town. In 1984 he and his wife moved to Windermere; the children were now grown and flown. They then built their business - Windermere Lake District Holidays, until selling in 1991. Outside work he was secretary of the North Lincolnshire scientific society. Having been a rugby player Norman then took up golf. He became a Director of Scunthorpe Golf Club Ltd and very involved in the club management. Moving to Windermere he once again became involved with the Golf Club and was treasurer for 8 years, and privileged to be Captain in 2000. The same year Norman moved to Grange and subsequently became involved with Grange-over-Sands Golf Club. As a member of Probus he became their representative on the Britain in Bloom committee in 2011. Also in 2011, he became an independent member of Grange Town Council and enjoyed being involved with many aspects of the local community. Norman had the honour to become Mayor in 2013. Norman lived till his eightieth year and lived a very full life with a large family. He enjoyed a successful career and made a great voluntary contribution in all the places he lived through sporting clubs, committees and, ultimately, as Mayor of Grange. He was proud of Grange and a true gentleman who will be missed by many.

I am sure most, if not all of you, are aware that our Civic Mayor, Councillor Norman Bailey, died on New Year’s Day, aged 79. Joining the Council in August 2011, Councillor Bailey was the best sort of Councillor any constituent could wish to represent them. He was an astute man, diligent and careful, always questioning, always wishing to know the consequences of an action as well as the benefits. In particular, Councillor Bailey put the monthly, as well as the annual, budget and financial statements under very close scrutiny, asking questions and continuing until he was satisfied with the level of detail in the answers.
Among the many projects which Councillor Bailey was involved in was the refurbishment of the War Memorial. This he was passionate about, believing that the people of Grange should have a memorial to the fallen that they could be proud of and which would reflect the honour the town held for those named on it. Despite being unwell for some time, Councillor Bailey always attended meetings when he could, even getting Jackie, his wife, to drive him the short distance to and from the Victoria hall so that he could participate. In fact, a few days before he died he was still grilling me on the phone and in person about the forthcoming budget! Last Spring, Councillor Bailey was elected as the Town’s Civic Mayor, a duty he took very seriously. During his months in
post, he worked relentlessly in conjunction with the Chamber of Trade as well as St Paul’s Church to raise money for his chosen Mayoral charities, Bay Search and Rescue and St Mary’s Hospice. When all the accounts are completed, hundreds of pounds will be winging their way to these two local groups.
As well as being an excellent Councillor, Councillor Bailey was also a very nice bloke! A family man, he was kind, thoughtful and generous and had a quirky sense of humour. We will all miss Councillor Bailey’s thought provoking comments and questions but perhaps the thing we will miss most is his lop sided grin. Tricia Thomas Deputy Mayor.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to so many people who have helped and supported Norman and myself through last year in so many different ways. Also to thank you for your generosity in donating to St Marys Hospice in his memory. He would have been touched by this as his Mayor’s charities were the hospice and Bay Search and Rescue. Thank you. Jackie Bailey.
Town Council Update
be sent to Cumbria County Council Budget Consultation in relation to the proposed cuts to subsidised public transport which could result in the stopping of travel grants to young people aged over 16 and the removal of bus subsidies, the result of which could severely affect the 532 service and others. After some debate, it was decided to defer any decision about the running of the Promenade Recreation Ground
for the 2014 season, until a number of questions could be fully answered. The Council draft budget was considered but full discussion of this item was deferred until after any decision about the running of the Promenade Recreation Ground was made. A further Full Council Meeting will be called on Monday January 27th at 7pm in order complete this. The next Councillor Surgery will be held on 20th February.

The reason is the laying of a new pipe which will run along the B5278 from near Bigland Wood to Low Wood Bridge where it will divert into farmland around Haverthwaite village and pass under the A590 before re-joining the road at
the junction of Lane Ends and ending at The Causeway. Access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists. There will be no impact on the A590, which will be crossed by laying the new pipe inside an existing underpass. Project co-ordinator Bill Slater said the scheme was vital to prevent winter water shortages in places like Coniston, Hawkshead, Grizedale, Greenodd, Haverthwaite and the Crake and Rusland Valleys.
As a way of attempting to keep people better informed about what Grange Town Council have been engaged in during the past month, we will be including three or four key points based on items discussed or actioned at the monthly Monday evening Full Council meeting. Christmas lights at Trevenna We were really pleased with this years display but after the first couple of
days the weather took a turn for the worse, which stayed for the whole month! We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that visited and donated. It was
unbelievable to see cars still queuing in the middle of the gales, watching the lights going sideways! We are delighted to say donations surpassed previous years with the total raised this year being
£1800, which will all go to the NSPCC. Obviously enough incentive to do it all again next year and we think there is just room for a few improvements! Jeremy and Mandy Voakes
Friends at Christmas When Christmas Day dawned bright and clear, it was a big relief for many, not least the organisers, drivers and guests at the Friends at Christmas dinner. The URC Church Hall had been prepared on Christmas Eve and looked glorious. It was bedecked with white linen tablecloths provided by Grange Laundry, decorated with balloons from Grange Flowers, plants from Grange Plant Centre, gifts from Paragon, At Home, Cromptons and Bella Moda. Volunteers worked hard to prepare 14lbs of carrots provided by the Co-op, a similar quantity of sprouts donated by Fletchers, the two turkeys and potatoes came from a combined effort from Fish over Chips and J Procter. Other food items came from a long list of contributors including the Lymehurst, Higginson’s, Butterfingers, Hazelmere, Grange Bakery, the Chocolate Shop, Ainsworth’s and Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Shop and Sunrise Café. Cooking started early on Christmas Day morning and the meal was served to perfection at 12.30pm. Santa arrived after the meal to hand out presents; live music, games and quizzes followed. The day ended with the Queen’s Speech. Other contributors included Davenports, Country House, Vibe, Treatment Room, Michael C L Hodgson, The
Netherwood, Postlethwaite’s, Johnson the Jewellers, Poole Townsend, Hackney and Leigh, Wilson Robinson, Robinsons and Bagot’s. It was a genuinely joyous occasion enjoyed by 46 guests who would otherwise have been on their own on Christmas Day. It couldn’t have happened without the support of the businesses of Grange and the many volunteers. Friends at Christmas Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed, both on the day and behind the scenes. Special thanks to the new volunteers, Santa and the drivers, but especially to the 46 guests who gave their companionship to others to make it a memorable day. We have already started planning the 2014 event and look forward to seeing you there! Friends at Christmas Committee
Thank you
from the food bank
We are writing to thank the churches and organisations in Grange for their generous donation of some 302.5kgs of food. We would be grateful if you would let all contributors know that their generosity is much appreciated by the food bank and those we are called upon to serve. In October, the Ulverston food bank fed 23 adults and 13 children with 283kgs of dried and tinned food along with some toiletries and other essentials. We received almost 700kg of donated food that was processed and delivered to the food bank’s warehouse in Barrow.
The Ulverston satellite food bank is well established after being welcomed into Bethany Christian Church in the centre of town, near the bus stop. We open 3 days a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11.OOam to 1.OOpm. The main collection point is open every morning in the Parish Church. The food bank has 21 trained volunteers who work in the drop-in, process the donations and take them through to Barrow and return with the food boxes made up in Barrow to provide a balanced diet of emergency food enough for 3 days. The next appeal for the Ulverston and Barrow food bank is on Sunday 2nd February in the Parish Hall, Kents Bank Road, between 1 and 3 pm. All items would be very gratefully received.
Britain’s friendliest business? The Pheasant Inn
Allithwaite’s Pheasant Inn has found itself in the final of a national competition to find Britain’s friendliest business. The pub, on Flookburgh Road, Allithwaite, became one of 20 finalists in the award sponsored by Liberis, one of the UK’s largest providers of small business funding. The judges noted that the Inn “really stood out” amongst strong competition. The Pheasant Inn is run by the Jones family and, if it wins
the coveted title of ‘Britain’s Friendliest Business’, the owners will receive a cash award of £10,000. The company impressed judges with its strong entry and they were particularly impressed by the pub’s drive for community involvement and good customer service.
The Inn hosts regular darts and quiz nights for locals, organises and prepares Meals on Wheels twice a week, hosts two Age Concern lunches every month and raises money for the local netball team. And, if taxis are scarce, the Jones will even give holidaying guests a lift back to their accommodation. Each finalist in the competition must now get as many Facebook ‘likes’ as possible, the number received being considered by the judges when they make their final decision. You can support the businesses on Twitter @LiberisUK using the hashtag #BFBiz and on Facebook at facebook.com/ BritainsFriendliestBiz.

Grange Xmas Extravaganza - Thank you

Many months of hard work and preparation by Grange over Sands Xmas Extravaganza Committee came to a magnificent culmination on Saturday 14th December. Such was the herculean effort by all involved, that President Peter Endsor was reluctant to single out anyone for praise except for a massive thank you to Paul Richardson of PSR Marquee Hire, whose free gift of a heated marquee in Kents Bank Road car park made it all possible on the day. The day kicked off with the rythmic accompaniment and stretched
Lycra of Tasha’s ‘Zumba dancing Flash Mob’ as they toured the town’s hot spots. Lycra of a very different kind was on display at Reg Brown’s electric bicycle stand, where the very latest locally produced cycling technology could be examined and tried out. A very emotional moment took place when our then mayor, Norman Bailey, left his sickbed and braved the cold and damp to lend his personal support to the extravaganza, encouraging everyone as he toured the stands, with his wife and his son by his side.
Campaigners condemnation at train ticket price hikes
Three Parks Group
Railway campaigners are calling for better train services in response to recently increased train fares – a 3.1% rise on the average ticket. Indeed a single ticket from Barrow to Carnforth on the Furness Line will set rail users back £10.60, with peak return tickets now £11.80 a day. Chairman of the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership, Peter Robinson, said: “Certainly, in this area there’s inadequate capacity, not all stations have a good service and services are irregular. When fares are increased it should mean services are improved. He continued: “It’s a lot of money for a ticket when often people get turned away because there’s only one coach and it’s full. The one that calls at Grange at about 11am is especially bad and by that point it’s been anhour-and-a-half since the last train.”
The six monthly general meeting of the Group on the 16th of January in the Victoria Hall expressed concern at the continued damage to the Promenade sea wall following the recent high tide. Promises by the District Council, many months ago, to repair the sea wall and the broken stations and rails of the balustrade have not been fulfilled.
Fares increased across the UK at the start of January and will see ticket prices rise by an average of 3.1%, up to a maximum of 5.1%. MP Tim Farron said: “The cost of living is a struggle for many, so to be putting up rail fares is a big blow for people who have no choice but to pay, while those who do have a choice will be pushed back into using their cars. “If the cost of train travel is too much, tourists will either come by car, which is not what we want environmentally, or they will go elsewhere.” In 2010 several MPs, including Tim Farron, took a stand against rising ticket prices. Recently more than 50 Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green Party, and Scottish National Party MPs have signed a parliamentary motion calling for the re-nationalisation of the UK’s railways, which was tabled earlier this year.

As the deputy mayor Patricia Thomas released the balloons, the weather took a turn for the worse, so visitors drifted toward the shelter of the marquee where craft stalls, 2 bars and a hog-roast gave way to ‘’Grange Has Got Talent’’ where the 4 local primary schools competed at music, singing, dancing and gymnastics. The winner, Laurence Diffey of Flookburgh, stunned everyone with his skill at the piano. The planning is now underway for Extravaganza 2014 and the Chamber invites ideas for the event from one and all.

The Group is still waiting to find out if the District Council will be dredging the silt from the bay at the southern end of the Ornamental Pond. The condition of the ramps providing access to the toilets in the Ornamental Gardens was also highlighted along with the difficulty of opening the door of the newly renovated disabled toilet. Many sections of the garden paths are also in need of renovation as they are a trip hazard. The delivery of trees, shrubs and plants for the area cleared of bamboo is expected in February. It was good to note that the District Council has renovated and painted the three shelters on the Promenade and, thanks to Councillor Bill Wareing, the Group has been able to obtain funds to provide a seesaw in the larger children’s playground on the Promenade to replace equipment which had to be condemned. We are anticipating work being undertaken throughout the three parks during the week of the 10th February by Continental Landscapes following discussions with the District Council. The proposal to provide pictures of old Grange from the Frith Collection in the Main Street underpass has had to be deferred, for the time being, due to complicated issues between Network Rail and Grange Town Council. We do think, however, it is time Network Rail tidied up the embankment and fence alongside this Car Park, and we will make an attempt to encourage them to do so. We hope to provide a further exhibition in the library of work being carried out by the Group. Ron Shapland, Chairman.

Diabetes and the feet
Many people with diabetes know that they have to take special care of their feet and it is important to understand how and why foot problems develop.
Over a time high blood glucose levels can cause damage to the feet by affecting the nerves and the blood vessels. Because damage to the nerves and blood supply to your feet
happens gradually, it’s important to know what to look for and how to spot the signs of any change. By checking your feet regularly you can spot the signs of any damage

Organ donation: Time to talk
NHS Blood and Transplant are urging people to consider organ donation as 65 people in Cumbria were left waiting for a transplant over the festive period. 21 people in Cumbria have received a life-saving organ transplant from a deceased donor this year. But to help save more people everyone, including the 156,058 people on the NHS Organ Donor Register in Cumbria, is being urged to talk to their families about their donation decision. A spokesman from NHS Blood and Transplant said: “Fewer than 5,000 people each year die in circumstances where they can donate their organs, so we need to ensure that every potential donor who wants to donate is not prevented from doing so because their family do not know what they would have wanted.” To register as an organ donor or to find out more information, visit: www.organdonation.nhs.uk/

Whiter Teeth
I would like my teeth to look whiter and the staining to be removed. How can I achieve this?
In order to remove staining and build up from your natural teeth you would require a scale and polish with the dental hygienist. At this appointment the hygienist will remove any calculus and plaque deposits from your teeth and finally finish off with a full mouth polish. Many patients notice an immediate result as the coffee, tea, red wine and smoking stains will disappear. We also have an air flow unit that can remove even stubborn
skin, thickened toenails, cold, pale feet, wounds or sores, pain in your feet. It is important to have your feet checked on an annual basis. A podiatrist can look for changes to your nerves and the blood supply as well as checking the shape and condition of your feet. by Judith Anders

The book had three parts; photographic pages, pocket pages and concertina pages with a hard back and an embroidered spine. Elizabeth showed us how to cut the board, cover and line to make the cover of the book. We had all brought different papers with us so the finished books would all look very different. We were given the sizes and numbers of pages with Elizabeth on hand to sort out any problems! We then made folds to the pages and, with a measured template, made
the holes ready for stitching. Stitching of the pages to the spine was demonstrated and a few of the members completed their book. The rest took them home to finish. We were all very pleased with them. All thanks go to Elizabeth for leading us carefully through the stages. The next meeting is Tuesday 4th February when we will be making a piece of Black work with Dorothy Pearce. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary, Anne Covell, on 01539 737049.

All made very interesting and informative by Denis, who we trust will be back to tell us about more of his travels in other parts of the world. The Grange Probus Club members meet on the second Monday of each month, 10am at the Netherwood Hotel, G-O-S. The next meeting is on the 10th February 2014 with a talk on “The Canal System of England and Wales” by Martin Cooper. New members are always welcome.

Newton & Field Broughton WI
The 2014 season began on January 13th, with the AGM, followed by presentations from members about their recent research.
The January meeting of Newton & Field Broughton WI was a busy one! After the business meeting a member gave a comprehensive explanation of the four resolutions in order that members were aware of their contents before voting for one of them. Following this, the meeting divided into teams of 4 to take part in a quiz which had been prepared by a fellow member. This was enjoyed by all the participants and small prizes were awarded to those with the highest scores. Subscriptions were paid and monies for the dinner on 22nd January were also collected. The speaker at February’s meeting will be a representative from Old Hall Farm, Bouth. The meeting will be at Lindale Village Hall on 12th February, starting at 7.30pm.

Grange Ramblers On Wednesday 11th December 15 walkers met on a fine day at Staveley, walked up Kentmere Valley, then over Hugill Fell. The route went to Ings, carried on past Borweck Fold and met the Dales Way then returned to Staveley. The walk was led by well known mountaineer and fell runner Ian Conway. Monday 16th December: 8 walkers set off from Ship Inn, Sandside back road, then crossing and recrossing the main road to Dallam estate and over the hill to Beetham. At Highwood the ground was muddy and slippery in parts, till we came to Fairysteps. Some took the magical steps, others took the roundabout muddy route through the woods continuing to Storth. The 5 mile walk was led by Alan Heaton. On 16th January, 10 Ramblers and 2 dogs set off from Broughton-in-Furness for a 5.5 mile circular walk around Galloper Pool and Black Moss. The walk
followed the old railway track before diverting onto the road and taking the footpath to Butterstead Wood, and on to Latter Rigg wood. Brief sunshine provided the opportunity to admire the views and have a lunch break before descending to Black Moss. The route was taken past Wall End to the start. Leader: Alec Bottomley.
Lower Holker WI Three visitors joined members at the January meeting when Mr Jack Manning told us about the ancient Fish Traps in the bay that he surveyed when they were exposed by the shifting tide. He also showed some short films from his collection. Members will be taking part in the ‘Passing on of the Baton’ which is to travel round the country to end its journey in London in 2015 for the national centenary celebrations. The February meeting will be held at Flookburgh Village hall on 5th February at 7.30pm. Catherine Hunt will tell us of the uses of aromatherapy. Competition: A Favourite Perfume.
Grange Lecture Society Gail Morecambe, daughter of Eric, the funny man of comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, spoke to the Society on 14th January about ‘Life with my Father Eric Morecambe’. Gail, who has a busy schedule giving talks about her father, showed - with the aid of some humorous anecdotes - what it was like living at home with Eric (chaotic, but great fun) and how as a young girl she coped with having a famous father (she persistently avoided telling people Eric was her dad). She spoke about how he met Ernie Wise and their close working relationship; also about her mother Joan (a great mum, devoted to her father) and her grandparents who looked after her and her brother when Joan was with Eric on tour. Two lectures take place this month: on 11th February wildlife photographer Keith Offord will give a presentation on ‘Namibia – Land of Contrasts’, and on 18th February Dennis Whittaker will speak about the Steam Yacht, Gondola. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall. Finally, on 25th February a members’ lunch will be held at the Netherwood Hotel with serving magistrate Graham Farrell as Guest Speaker.

Grange Garden Society The January meeting was an informal event where the members gathered to pay their subscriptions for the coming year. They also enjoyed a quiz which had been set by Hilary Price, this proved to be challenging but enjoyable. This was followed by a Jacobs Join where members had provided a most excellent buffet. We now look forward to the coming year with a programme of excellent speakers commencing on the 21st of February with a talk on Hydrangeas to be given by Newman. Coffee Club In January we welcomed Janet Chapman. After working as a teacher in Blackpool, Janet went in 1984 to teach young kids in Malaysia but in the 1990’s she left the beautiful jungles of Malaysia for the concrete jungle of Manila where she taught 6-7 year olds until 1998 when she had to return to UK. Realising the needs of families working in a country with a different culture, she joined a team seeking to care for and equip such families providing encouragement, educational support and resources. Initially this involves home visits, introducing the children to others facing a similar unknown future. She helps parents and children anticipate possible problems. After they have left she keeps in touch with all 153 British children while they are abroad. When they return to UK for home leave she runs reunion camps and welcomes them back and helps them face life here where future education or schooling may be required in a Britain that
has changed much since they first left. The next Coffee Club meeting is on February 18th when Graham Jones will talk about his 2000 mile walk of discovery round Britain’s coastline. Coffee at 10.15am at Abbot Hall. Everyone welcome.
Grange & District U3A Grange and District U3A sends New Year best wishes to all in the Grange area and hopes to see a good proportion of our friends and neighbours at our meetings and activities during the year. We are a thriving organisation with over 300 members. We hold a General Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Victoria Hall, Grange-over-Sands when members can listen to an invited speaker and meet socially over a coffee and biscuit. The main activities take place in interest groups of which there are more than 30. The special events held over the Christmas and New Year period (film night, murder mystery meal, seasonal special meeting) were popular and successful. The interest groups continue with their activities and are planning programmes for 2014. There is something for all tastes and interests, whether your passion is for the sedentary and cerebral (mah jong, history and bridge), the creative (crafts, music and photography) or the active (walking, snooker and geology). Come and sample what we have to offer. Information about

Allithwaite Playground Committee Last year was such a fun year for the Committee and the local community, with lots of wonderful events, including the Spring TableTop Sale; the fun-filled BBQ in the Park; and the Hallowe’en disco. We are especially thankful to the incredibly generous support of Pat Brooks, who shaved her head last summer to raise an enormous £500 for the playground. We are humbled by her kindness.
The park continues to be such an important hub for the children in the village, who come in droves to the park after school every night in the warmer months. With your support we have been able to repair the Trim Trail and the swings this year, which are so well loved and well used by the local children. We are so grateful to everyone in the community who supports this essential and cherished playspace. We always welcome fresh faces to the Committee and to the mowing rota, so if you feel like doing something rewarding and fun for the kids in your community in 2014, please contact Mandy Freewoman on 33523.

Church news
St Paul’s, Grange
St Paul’s was delighted to welcome guest preacher Rev Celia McCulloch to the service on Sunday, 12th January. As part of the church’s Ministry of Healing, Rev McCulloch told how Jesus was baptised by John and through that baptism the spirit of God came down giving Jesus the power to heal. She explained that the ministry of healing is about comfort and peace as we open ourselves to God so he can make us whole. She asked us to come in prayer on behalf of others, those whom we knew or knew of, of places where there were wounds to heal and to

Closure of St Cuthbert’s has faded into the background. Only 4 suggestions for future use have been put forward. The June Baker concert was a great success. A full house

On the Sunday prior to Christmas, the URC Church Choir joined forces with the Methodist Church Choir in Grange, and presented a programme of Christmas music and readings, ‘Down the Ages’. Afterwards, the choirs and congregations shared fellowship over tea and coffee, in the schoolroom. At the Christmas Morning service in Grange Methodist Church, there were many visitors, and the minister’s family lit the Advent Candles. Then the Rev Joe Daley had various items connected with Christmas and challenged us to think about where the items, representing a tradition, had originated. The offering was for the charity, ‘Action for Children’. The new session of Grange Methodist Church Open Fellowship began with the Rev Joe Daley as speaker.

The Parish Social Committee’s Christmas dinner at the Grange was very successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Men’s Group enjoyed a very interesting talk by Dr Phizacklea – on male illnesses!
friends from all over the country. It was so good to meet everybody on such a very special occasion. It was evident how much hard work and organisation had gone into the preparing of such a spiritual and rich service, with delicious refreshments and fellowship after. We thank everyone who played a part and helped in any way to make this service of induction and welcome so special. We ask for God’s blessings on Martyn, Alison, Simon and Rebecca as they settle into the Grange Manse, begin their new life, get to know us all and enjoy the beauty of Grange and the South Lakes.
His interesting talk covered fictional characters who were superheroes, whose actions helped ordinary people. The most famous was Superman, but also interesting was Spiderman and Robin to name but a few.

On Friday, February 28th at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall a Beetle Drive has been arranged together with a Fish and Chip supper. This promises to be a fun-filled evening so to ensure you don’t miss out, please write your name on the list at the back of church to reserve your place.
Saturday 11th January was an afternoon to forget! Although I was visiting two elderly sick parishioners, I forgot completely my acceptance of an invitation to attend the induction of the Rev Martyn Coe at the URC. My abject apologies to Rev Martyn and the URC parishioners. That was not all, however. On returning from my visit to the sick, I called in to ‘At Home’ with a friend, for a cup of coffee. Having enjoyed a pleasant conversation with two gentlemen from Abbot Hall, we duly departed without paying! My sell-by date has indeed passed! I look forward to my forthcoming holiday!
Church, Elephant & Castle, treated us to a sermon of joy and insight into Martyn’s ministry to date. Mr Norman Burnell presented Martyn with a Bible as a welcoming gift from the South Lakes Group of Churches and the Rev’d Nick Ash and Rev’d Tony Wells presented a copy of the Ecumenical Declaration of Intent. This is the written Intention, as said in the service, which is so beautifully put for us all: “Together, by God’s grace, we will work and pray for the visible unity of the church in the way Christ chooses.” The Church was full. Over 170 people came, not only from Grange and the South Lakes, but also family and

Changes are in the air for St Paul’s branch of the Mother’s Union. Meetings will still be held on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month in the church meeting room with guests speaking on a variety of interesting topics, but as from this year the branch will come under the chairmanship of the Deanery Mother’s Union President.
On Saturday evening, 18th January, the Open Fellowship members invited others to join them in a New Year Party, in the schoolroom. This was
I am always interested as to why baptised Catholics cease to practice their faith, and I invite any interested person willing to discuss their reasons to contact me (015395 32731) sometime in early March (am on holiday during February). Knowing reasons might help one to reflect on what I, as Parish Priest, could possibly do to help. Also, if it is many years since you ‘rested’, you will find a different Church today. Anyway, I simply make the offer. God bless. Fr P. PS: To be intoxicated is to feel sophisticated, but not be able to say it.

Grange Drama
Recently June Metcalfe, author of ‘Tea for Tommy’, came to talk to some of us about her latest play, set in August 1915 at Preston Railway Station. Given that plans for WW1 events are being planned throughout the UK, we are delighted that she has given us permission to hold a public reading of her new work here. Readers may not know that the Preston Pals have finally been recognised and are commemorated by a plaque at this station. Our second reading of ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ was recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and seen by drama members, Jim & Florence Robson, who were delighted to find Charlie Russell in the cast of this 1920’s whodunit spoof. She appeared in Grange Opera’s pantomimes as a youngster whilst her mother Fiona acted with our company. She too is well remembered for her portrayal of
the Duchess of York (the late Queen Mother) in a play about the abdication of Edward VIII. What chance connections. Lastly Charlotte Jones’s play ‘Humble Boy’ is a wry, witty and very funny portrait of middle class England set in a garden. Grange Drama has a penchant for “stage gardening” and you have only to look back to some of our recent Alan Ayckbourn productions to know that.
We have some new group members starting in January and some spaces if anyone else aged between 9 & 11 years would like to join us. We have a new venue: we will meet at Cartmel Village Hall on Wednesdays, 6.00pm till 7.15pm, from January the 8th. Contact Adele on tel: 36650.
Masquerade Drama Group
We performed at The Old Vicarage for the residents and also at Allithwaite School for the whole school. The audience enjoyed booing the villain and cheering the hero.

Grange & District Amateur Operatic Society
The unquenchable spirit of wartime Britain, the highs and lows, comedy and tragedy, is being captured by Grange Amateur Operatic Society on stage in the Victoria Hall, Grange, on Tuesday 25th February - Saturday 1st March, nightly at 7:30pm plus a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm. This lively show, written by Lionel Bart of ‘Oliver’ fame, is set in the east end of London in 1940, and really tells the story of those war years lived out in Britain during that time. With well known songs and even ‘Vera Lynn’ (well, in voice only!) making her mark. A strong cast of experienced players are supported by thirteen local children - recruited from the ever popular local panto’ - playing evacuees and really getting into the mood of the 1940’s childhood experience of evacuation, gas-masks and all! Do come along and re-live your memories of that period of history, or experience it for the first time, air-raid sirens included! Tickets are obtainable from ‘Butterfingers’ from Monday 10th February or by telephone: 015395 34098.

School Reports Acorn Montessori School
After a busy autumn term culminating in a Christmas party and performances of their nativity play for two local nursing homes, Allithwaite Primary School and their own families, the children at Acorn Montessori Nursery School enjoyed their Christmas break.
Cartmel Priory School In early December, a business called ‘Quirky’ was involved in the Young Enterprise Christmas Trade Fair at the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal, along with other South Lakeland schools.
This term we have lots of exciting things planned – we will be looking at winter with all things cold and we may be the only people wanting snow! Chinese New Year will follow with the Year of the Horse. The children will be making their own fans, red envelopes and a huge dragon for the classroom and will look at how the festival is celebrated and enjoy a celebratory meal.
Allithwaite Primary winnings to benefit community
Allithwaite Primary School, which was recently awarded £3,000 for IT equipment, plans to bridge the generation gap between pupils and elderly residents by sharing newfound IT knowledge. “The youngsters will use the tablets in lessons and then pass on what they’ve learned to older people in the community,” said head teacher Brian Jones. “We want people to be able to use our school more.” The school was one of two across the county chosen for the maximum £3000 award from Lloyds Bank, thanks to the votes of local people. In addition, the school s PTA also donated £1,000 towards the scheme, which will pay for a further seven tablet computers. The plan is now for staff and pupils to hold coffee mornings in school at which pupils would take it in turns to demonstrate their knowledge. Transport will also be provided to elderly people who wish to take up IT lessons.

Cartmel Primary School one of the best in the country
Cartmel C of E primary school has been ranked in the top 10 performers in the country. The national league tables found Cartmel C of E primary to be the sixth best from measurements of reading, writing and maths ability. The tables measured the percentage of pupils who achieved level four or above in reading, writing and maths between the ages of seven and 11. Other high performing primary schools locally included Arnside, Windermere’s Goodly Dale, Heversham St Peter’s, Holme, Selside, Storth and Lindal and Marton. South Lakes MP Tim Farron has congratulated pupils, parents and teachers: “In South Lakeland we are lucky to have so many good schools but Cartmel Primary really have gone above and beyond. I want to pay tribute to Sarah Firth, her staff, the pupils and their parents for their wonderful achievement.” Grange Now spoke to headmistress, Sarah Firth, who gave her response to the good news: “I am delighted that the hard work of the whole school has been recognised. The league tables however don’t tell the whole story. The most important aspect of our school is that all the children are happy and want to learn; they make fantastic progress during their time with us. This is down to the dedication of all staff who know each

Lindale Pre-School Nursery
The Nursery has had a great start to the New Year and has welcomed four new arrivals lately. There are changes afoot at our School House building with the start of work on our small garden area—a new fence is already up and there are plans to revamp the space with lots of equipment for play and education in time for the warmer weather. The Nursery has also moved into the digital age with the purchase of a new Hudl tablet, on which children can play counting, reading and writing games. Some of the children are already proving themselves more au fait with tablets than their parents!

which includes a web-cam, instructions, figures and a backdrop. The kit costs £10 and they come in fairy tale and monster themes. The kit was designed by Emilio, pictured below receiving the award. Products are available from Quirky HQ at School if you are interested in finding out more. Thanks to Grange Rotary for their support in sponsoring the Young Enterprise Programme, which runs for a period of 12 months. The project forms part of the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness course, which prepares pupils for later life by developing a range of skills.
Our topics for the term include winter weather—though unfortunately it’s been in short supply at the moment! Undaunted, children have been painting lots of snowy pictures, made a 3D snowman and learnt about the Antarctic and its penguins. The animal theme has continued with a safari project and a Nursery trip to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park to learn more about exotic creatures and their habitats. Next up on our imaginary jet-setting tour of the world is China, when we will learn all about Chinese New Year, followed by the Caribbean and its great food, and France. For any more information about the Nursery or to enquire about places for your children, call 07977 203 513 or email lindalepreschoolnursery@ hotmail.co.uk.

Dear Editor, I have a polite request to drivers in Grange. When you are attempting to park your cars along busy Kents Bank Road, in your rush to grab a free space, would you mind not mounting the kerb with no regard to passing pedestrians? If you struggle with parallel parking, or with parking safely in general, perhaps you could spare 20 pence to park in the car park? Today outside the Co-op, where the pavement was very busy, a driver drove forwards and mounted the kerb, well on to the pavement and only narrowly missed my two young children who were skipping happily along, chatting about Christmas. Unfortunately this is a frequent event, particularly along the stretch between the deli and the co-op. Today I really thought my youngest son was going to be run over. I was so shocked and busy comforting him that I forgot to write down the registration number of the car. Please be assured that if this happens again, I will be reporting any offenders to the police, after I have politely pointed out your wholly inconsiderate and dangerous behaviour. This time an accident was narrowly avoided, but Christmas could have been very different for all of us this year. Name and address supplied.
Dear Editor, I would like to thank everyone who helped me after my fall downstairs at Victoria Hall on Saturday 7th December when I was going to see the pantomime. Also a big thank you to the children of the pantomime for the plant they sent me. I have now made a full recovery and I have my plaster off my broken wrist. Mrs J. Garnett, Lindale
Dear Editor, Could you please explain to dog owners who are leaving dog poo lying around the implications of children picking the stuff up, or stepping in it and it getting into their eyes or mouth. Maybe they’d think more about leaving it behind. I am a new resident to Grange and disgusted at how dirty it is with the stuff. I was walking along Kents Bank Road last week holding my 1 year old daughter’s hand as she walked along with me, she suddenly bent down to pick something up, it was dog poo, left by the owner of a dog. I walked up Allithwaite road yesterday and there is an absolutely massive one there on the pavement not far from the school. A guy shouted back to me to watch out for it as either the pram or my daughter would have gone in it. It must have been a pretty big dog, but it’s so naughty and making me quite angry. Just before Christmas, I took my daughter to playschool at the nursery school on the playing fields. There must have been a poo on the path as someone accidently walked a fresh one into the school all over the floor/carpets where the babies play with the toys, putting them into their mouths. What is wrong with people leaving this filth around? Every day we go for a walk to the band stand park and we come back with dog poo on her shoes, my shoes or on the pram wheels. One time she jumped up onto a bench it was on her shoe and then went all over her trousers and onto her hands. It’s disgusting. Do people not care about young children or even the community? The streets of Grange are lined with it. Dog poo can cause blindness. It happened to a lad I was at school with; he rubbed it into his eye and hasn’t seen out of that eye since. Is there anything we can do as a team to sort these people out? I’ve lived in Spain and Morocco for the last 14 years, where there are hundreds of stray dogs mooching about, and you don’t see dog poo like you do in this lovely small town. I’m sure it will affect tourism too. Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor, I attended the Town Council meeting on Monday evening and was dismayed to learn of the council’s intention to alter the Tourist Information Centre, for the purpose of making the area into an office for council staff. The Tourist Information area would then become a small 2m wide corridor. The whole of the Cartmel Peninsula relies on tourism and the Victoria Hall is the only centre providing this service. The 10 largest businesses in the Peninsula are all tourist-based. They provide work for all manner of local trades people. We need therefore a strong tourist presence in the area and we were indeed lucky to have it staffed by dedicated local volunteers (unpaid) who gave it a personal touch. The cost for the alterations were spoken of £17 thousand pounds! No plans were available for the public to look at and yet 6 members of the Town Council voted for it, and there was only 1 abstention. Surely the Victoria Hall is a listed building and any alterations are subject to building regulations and should reflect the quality of the building. How is such an expense to us, the rate payers, justified when the budget is already overspent and the cost will have to come out of the limited reserves. Judith Shapland, Grange
