Grange Now was invited to view the new Health Centre by Dr Diane Ruell of the Peninsula Medical Practice and her husband, registered practice manager Dr Nick Gent. The Peninsula Medical Practice (formerly Rosegrove Surgery) shares the state-of-the-art premises with the doctors and staff of Nutwood Surgery and both practices have had much input into the brand-new purpose built Health Centre. It was hard to imagine the centre had only been open since the 10th March and despite the logistics of moving two medical practices and staff into the same building, there have been relatively few teething problems. Dr Ruell told Grange Now that both surgeries are enjoying the novel opportunity of working together. The spacious reception area (with touch-screen patient registration) also has a receptionist for each practice, plenty of comfortable seating for all patients and a useful patient information section. Toilet facilities for patients are well sign-posted. Repeat prescriptions can be placed in one of two boxes in the foyer. A white box for Peninsula Medical Practice and a black box for Nutwood Surgery are clearly identified. Dr Gent took me on a whistle-stop tour through the two storey building. Along a wide corridor was the Community Services section with spacious treatment/consulting rooms to be occupied by a physiotherapist, podiatrist, midwives, district nurses and health visitors. (Presently Grange Clinic is remaining at Hampsfell Grange but is soon to re-locate to the Health Centre). A further corridor saw the clearly identifiable consulting rooms for the 8 doctors sharing the facilities (five for Nutwood and 3 for Peninsula) plus rooms for practices’ nurses and phlebotomists. The Health Centre also boasts well–appointed treatment rooms for procedures and a theatre for minor operations. A staircase (or lift) leads to the first floor and the hub of the centre – a
super administration area and work stations for both practices. A comfortable rest-room and kitchen with sofas, chairs and tables is bound to be well-used where both surgeries can relax together. The bay-side of the first floor is occupied by spacious inter-communicating meeting and training rooms. There is also a quiet room for staff wishing to research away from the hustle and bustle of the busy Health Centre. Nothing has been forgotten in the planning of this marvellous new facility for the patients of Nutwood Surgery and the Peninsula Medical Practice. Dr Ruell stressed that patients of Fairfield Surgery will still be able to attend the Flookburgh practice. “Fairfield is an important part of what we do. We are very committed to the surgery in Flookburgh as half our patients are registered there and we wouldn’t expect them to make the journey to Grange. We also treat the many visitors to the caravan parks in the area at Flookburgh.” Dr Ruell added, “Patients can request where they wish to be seen as records are held electronically and are available at both sites.” Grange Now suspects there will be quite a few requests to be seen in Grange – at least initially – for patients to see the new Health Centre for themselves! The Health Centre is open Monday to Friday 8am – 6.30pm and closed at the weekend. Please note the new telephone numbers for appointments. Peninsula patients to ring 01539 715715 and Nutwood patients call 01539 715500.

Former swimming pool makes way for affordable housing Work begins at Berners Close on much needed affordable housing.
Investment Matters By Jason Crane APFS CFPcm
‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is a common saying, but in no other area does this resonate more than in Financial Planning. The key to successful Financial Planning is to ensure that you hold a diverse spread of asset types. Other than Cash and Property; two of the main asset types are Equities and Fixed Interest Securities, such as Corporate Bonds. Equities/Shares; investing in shares means that you own a share of that company and therefore receive a share of the profits by way of dividend. Dividend income is often seen as a hedge against inflation; in theory, if revenue and costs rise with inflation, so will the profits. Consistent and rising dividends should mean a rise in the share price, ensuring investors benefit from both income and capital growth. Conversely, dividends are by no means guaranteed and the value of shares can fall as well as rise so investors may get back less than they invest. Corporate Bonds are essentially loans to companies in return for a fixed rate of interest; the loan being repayable on a fixed date in the future (very much like an interest only mortgage when buying a home). Before being repaid by the company, Corporate Bonds can be bought and sold on the
stock market with the price very much determined by supply and demand, often affected by interest rates, inflation and the financial strength of the company. In terms of risk, this type of investment sits below shares as the company simply needs to have enough cash to service the debt, whereas shareholders require the company to make reasonable profits to pay a dividend. Although this type of investment is considered lower risk than shares, they do have an element of risk as some companies will default. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Rob Brittain of Two Castles Housing Association, Craig Hunter and Bill McCafferty from Esh, Cllr Andrew Gardiner and Graham Vincent from South Lakeland District Council
There is a particular need for houses in the area, which young people and young families, can afford to rent or buy, particularly those who have grown up in the area and are now having to moving away due to being ‘priced out’ of the market. Two Castles Housing Association in partnership with Esh Property Services are behind the £6 million development of 43 houses, which is due to be completed in spring 2015. The development, for people with a connection to the town and the surrounding area, will be made up of 32 properties for affordable rent and 11 properties which will be offered under a shared ownership arrangement.
The homes, which will also include a range of energy efficient features to help make them even more affordable, will be built using natural slate and stone elevations, to reflect the character of Grange-over-Sands conservation area, something that has been ensured by Berners Grange Project Group, who has had significant input into the scheme in order to ensure that the needs and wishes of the community are met.Two Castles have already built in the area, in Flookburgh and more recently at Higher Grange, the development at the top of Grange Fell Road. Councillor Tom Harvey, Grange South district councillor and Chairman of Grange Town Council said: “This is a project on which a number of partners have been working extremely hard for the past year or so to bring to fruition. “We hear time and again about the need for affordable housing and I’m so pleased to see that after our efforts the diggers are
finally on site at Berners and starting to build what I consider to be truly affordable homes that will allow many of our local families to stay and live and work in and around Grange.”
There are currently more than 100 people on the list for affordable housing in Grange and plans for this scheme have come about thanks to Berners Grange Project Group with support from South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) and Grange Town Council. Partfunded with an investment from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the scheme was also made possible thanks to SLDC agreeing to sell the land for £1 and making available a grant of £230,000 towards the project.
Councillor Andrew Gardiner, Grange North district councillor, said: “This is the result of a lot of hard work by the councillors and officers to bring affordable housing to Grange and hopefully they will be used for local people so they can stay in Grange and support the schools and local businesses.’’
Anyone interested in renting one of these properties, should register with Cumbria Choice Based Lettings by visiting www.cumbriachoice.org.uk. Alternatively, please call Two Castles’ Carlisle office on 01228 547463 for more information visit Two Castles Housing Association, via www.twocastles.org.uk.
Roof renovations at Cartmel Priory
J P Computers
As with all building work, what at first looks to be a small job can quickly become something much larger and that seems to be the case at Cartmel Priory Church, where work on the roof is continuing. Initially, it was thought that the roof needed to be re-slated but once stripped back it became apparent that there was timber damage and 5 beams needed to be replaced. That has now risen to 21 beams - watch this space. The scaffolding, which the Church press release said could be described as ‘one of the most spectacular pieces of modern art using scaffolding’ is not deterring locals and tourists from visiting the Priory which is good news as it is likely to remain throughout the Summer. Interestingly, the Church say that, ‘now many of the beams have been removed

it is probable that the trees were acorns germinated in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, possibly before the Spanish Armada. Early indications show a pattern of growth rings suggesting a recorded known period of warm wet summers, good for trees and lethal for peasant farmers in the decade before they were felled. This combined with local records of successful and unsuccessful farming at the time means that some of the timbers can be dated.’ Apparently, the Diocesan archaeologist is being consulted and when we get any further information we will let you know.
Parish Hall latest Paid for by local benefactors and good old fund-raising over a century ago (in which Grange still excels), Grange Parish Hall is now sadly closing in a few months time, apparently due to financial issues. As yet no news, despite rumours, of potential buyers. One was apparently St Charles Church. Rector Nick Ash told Grange Now, “We haven’t been approached by the Roman Catholic Church or builders. The PCC is still considering options for the future of the Parish Hall. There are no plans as yet but the PCC would consider approaches that are made.”

SLDC take another look at the Lido It appears the grade 2 listed Lido is the subject of attention from SLDC yet again as they have put a tender brief out in the hope of attracting professional advice on the sustainability of a restored Lido. Specifically, could it sustain itself financially. At a recent meeting with the head of SLDC communications team, Grange Now was told that there is positive intention to go ahead. Over the past 6 months a public consultation was undertaken and the public exhibition in the library showed the various
options for having the Lido restored. The Council are also hoping to get advice on other activities that might enable the Lido to be sustainable, such as events, café, retail units, performance event, ice rink, sporting events, fitness/gym unit etc. Whoever wins the tender will then have just 4 weeks to provide detailed
income and expenditure projections to cover 10 years and also any green technologies to help keep operating costs down. Grange Now asked SLDC for a comment as to their intentions but nothing has been received at the time of writing. Whatever the future holds, let’s hope it’s an improvement.

Allithwaite pupils turn Teacher In November, Allithwaite Primary School successfully won £3000 from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund. In order to win the money the school had to prepare a project bid on which friends, family and local people could vote for. Their bid, they decided would focus on purchasing additional IT equipment, in the form of tablets, for the pupils to use in school. To take this further was the desire to strengthen links with the community by pupils working with older members from the surrounding area to show them how to use a tablet.
On successfully winning the funding, pupils were asked to apply in writing to become IT tutors for the course. At the same time older members of the community were approached to join the Project and once the School had recruited eight pupil tutors aged from 9 to 11 and eight adult students who were keen
Rachel Clark, subject Leader for IT at the school, devised a 4 week programme including “getting to know your tablet”, word processing, use of the Internet and shopping online. The project has taken place through March into April and on successful completion of the course each pupil tutor and adult student will receive a certificate. The celebration of presenting the certificates will take place in Allithwaite School on Monday 7 April when Mrs Di Davies will present the awards on behalf of Lloyds Bank. The school is planning to run a second course and has a growing list of adults waiting to be IT students. Following high profile publicity on BBC North West Tonight and on Radio Cumbria, the community are supporting the project and the IT pupil tutors are excited at the prospect of teaching more adults.

County Matters
Good news our New Medical Centre at Berners Close is now up and running for the benefit of us all in the Town. The Chancellor George Osborne has announced in his budget much needed extra funding to local authorities for the repairing of pot holes of £200 million pounds nationwide.
More funding of £85 Million pounds has been allocated for apprenticeships which I hope will help benefit the young people of our County. One of the main aims of the
Deputy Mayor’s Report Despite there being no civic duties this month I seem to have been pretty busy, one way or another with meetings and suchlike. Lots of exciting things are happening in the town at present, with the opening of our new Health Centre and the beginnings of groundwork on the Berners site.
The Council offices are now open and busy on the ground floor of the Victoria Hall so no more stairs to climb when accessing the Town Clerk and her team. The refurbished Information Centre is also open and though smaller seems surprisingly spacious and looks great. I hope all the dedicated volunteers who work there enjoy their new environment.

A pensioner bond, paying market rates, will be launched. The rate will be set in the autumn and will be more generous than other savings vehicles. All tax restrictions on how pensioners have access to their pension pots will be lifted. Pensioners will be allowed to take money out of their pensions without paying the 55% rate. Instead they will just have to pay normal tax rates I have been informed that Cold Callers are operating again in our area and I am enclosing the following advice from our County Officers. The new town website is also up and running. Looking around the town it looks like a place where things are happening. The Ornamental Gardens have had a lot of work done over the past few weeks and will, when all the planting is finished, be an amazing sight. Much of the work still to do will be carried out by volunteers and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ron Shapland and Brian Lewis for spearheading this work and ensuring our gardens will continue to be beautiful for visitors in the future as well as those who come today. The promenade is also looking very spring-like with more and more flowers appearing every time I walk along it. Again, can I thank all the volunteers who make this happen, both there and in Park Road Gardens. We really are very lucky in Grange to have so many dedicated

Elderly resident from Cark is a victim of crime
A vulnerable, elderly lady from Cark, appears to have been the victim of theft by bogus cold callers. Police are investigating the incident that occurred sometime between Wednesday 26th February and Friday 28th February. The lady bought some cleaning products, an ironing board cover and some feather dusters, from the cold callers. Several days later members of her family noticed that 5 cheques were missing from her cheque book. These would appear to have been stolen, possibly while the lady was distracted.
The police are advising people to please be vigilant if cold callers should knock at their door and advise family and friends to do the same. Anyone who has any information that may assist police please contact us on 101 or crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Rusty Bullets help raise funds for Grange First Responders David Kay and the Rusty Bullets have once again been doing their bit to help local causes, this time for Grange First Responders.
Grange Fell Golf Club hosted the evening on 28th February and the club would like to thank all those who came and supported the event. They would also like to thank Kevin Pearson for organising it and for ticket sales and also Arnold Clark for donating the excellent auction prizes. Rusty Bullets waived part of their fee, which helped towards raising £375 for Grange First Responders.

Immediately after Grange Now comes out, the group spend about an hour in the recording studio with the sound recordist John Duxbury. The resulting CD is posted out to around 40 people who are then treated to an engaging and entertaining mix of music, comment and readings from Grange Now. What a wonderful service that is kindly provided for the community. The service is done in conjunction with Barrow and District Society for the Blind. The charitable group have a shop in Grange and would always be grateful for any
contributions. They also organise welfare officers who will go out and help, covering Grange and the South Lakes area. They can organise things like talking watches and kitchen aids. Anyone wishing to contribute goods for the shop or to contact a welfare officer can get in touch with Val on 01229 820698, or just visit the shop located on Cavendish St. in Barrow which is open 9-5 Monday to Saturday. The society also hosts a monthly meeting at Abbot Hall again get in touch for more details.
Silversmithing for Double Joy Mary Stone has turned her hobby of silversmithing into a way of making money to help an orphanage in Kenya. Mary is a trustee of charity ‘Friends of Double Joy’ which helps to support Double Joy Children’s Farm, a home and school for children who have been orphaned, due to Aids, in Kenya. Mary said, “I’m usually asked to make pendants, brooches and earrings which I sell to make money for the orphanage”. The orphanage is home to 90 children who live in 11 adjoining houses, with 8 children to a home. This allows siblings to stay together, with older children looking after the younger ones with the help of house staff. Relatives are encouraged to visit the children at the farm to keep the families together. The children are taught, not only academically, but also vocational skills such as carpentry, tailoring, bicycle repair and tailoring. All Double Joy children leave the home with skills that help them to lead independent lives. Mary told Grange Now that, “with such a rise in
inflation in Kenya, the trustees are concerned about the level of funds to keep the farm going, and we are keen to increase awareness of Double Joy and of course, find more donors”. Mary continues to do silversmithing to earn more money for a very worthwhile cause, and if you wish to contact her about buying her jewellery, or you would like her to speak at a meeting you can contact her on 015395 34443.

Since then the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI will celebrate its centenary in 2015 and currently has 212,526 members in around 6,600 WIs. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities In the same way the Olympic torch

Grange WI is one of the newer branches – it formed at the end of 2013. We have a lively group of members who meet in the evening of the fourth Thursday of the month. In between meetings we have a range of social events and regularly enter exhibits in local shows and fairs. In our first year we won trophies for

professionally. If your smile is less than perfect it can affect your selfconfidence and the way others perceive you. Cfast is a gentle, minimally invasive treatment for adults, which uses orthodontic principles to straighten the upper and lower front six teeth. Cfast uses tooth coloured wires and clear brackets which are barely noticeable compared to silver brackets and wires used in traditional orthodontic treatment, therefore it is very discreet and hard to notice unless people get really close. Cfast is quicker than traditional methods as it focuses on the front teeth that make up your visible smile rather than the position
of the bite. Unlike many clear aligner systems, the movement is more predictable and is typically completed faster with the average treatment time being just 6 months. If you are interested in Cfast orthodontic treatment, please don’t hesitate to call our reception team at Smiles Dental for more information and to book your free consultation. This month Grange Now takes a closer look at the traditional fishing village of Flookburgh, which, takes its name from flat fish-known as flukes-found in the area.

What appears to be the town’s market square was, in reality, once the site of a chapel and graveyard with connections to the canons of Cartmel Priory. A market cross now designates a different market square. In 1669 the plague hit Flookburgh, and, in 1686, fire destroyed much of the village. Flookburgh fishers still harvest cockles and shrimp. The small brown shrimp of Morecambe Bay are considered a delicacy due to their flavour and texture.

Before I came to live up North (to what to me was deepest South) I knew my flooks and dabs quite well to fill my ever-hungry mouth The fish were landed every day 100 yards from my back door But all the market wanted then Was haddock once and haddock twice and haddock, haddock three times more So there were always flooks for free Because the fishers wanted shot And with my pail I’d meet the boats And gather up the jolly lot So when I came near Flookburgh I thought maybe it’s like where I was bred I asked around for flooks to buy Until folks thought ‘wrong in the head’ Then I discovered the other Flook Tall, Viking, strong and handsome too upright and full of energy Building himself a cosy broch From which to sail the ocean blue I thought that’s how good looks came here A short millenium ago His far descendants still work hard Some still go sailing to and fro And still Flook’s name goes striding out To say what Flookburgh’s about Poem by J. Higginsons Butchers are finalists in Food and Drink awards Higginsons of Grange have been selected as finalists, in the ‘Best Specialist Food Retailer’ section, in the 2014 Cumbria Life Food & Drink awards. This award is ‘particularly special’ to Stuart Higginson, as they were put forward based on reader nominations, which apparently arrived in their hundreds, as well as by an independent panel of judges, chaired by respected local chef Steven Doherty. Higginsons
are well-known in the area for their fabulous selection of local meats, speciality sausages and pies. The awards dinner and presentation is to be held at Kendal College on Thursday 3rd April.
Cartmel Coffee wins top award for second year running Cartmel Coffee was awarded the Michelin star of the industry – 5 Cup Accreditation – at the Beverage Standards Association annual Awards. This means that owners Paul and Phaedra Settle, of Grange, have reached the highest level in the quality of and presentation of drinks, customer service, ambience, cleanliness, menu range, training and sustainability procedures. And it was not just anybody who handed them the award, but Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes. Mr Settle, who only started the business in April 2011, said it was
a ‘tremendous achievement’. He added: “We were very pleased to have won the 4 Cup Accreditation last year in our first year of trading and have worked very hard to get to this standard, taking on board both the comments made by judges and feedback from customers. “This is a real cafe, frequented by locals and visitors on the edge of England’s Lake District.”

Brown Robin Nature Reserve I have had little time on the reserve due to the bad weather, however highlights include; occasional Hawfinch with numbers peaking to 13 in mid January, early drumming woodpeckers, displaying Buzzards and Ravens and occasional visits from Peregrines.
We have carried on with the coppice and finished for this season. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with this. The winds have also brought down several trees and created great habitat for the future.

Many people put up nest boxes, to see what species will make them their new home. Boxes placed near windows offer the perfect opportunity to observe just how active our garden birds can be when making their nest and bringing up young. Blue tits for instance are very active little birds, which will provide entertainment for all the family peering through the window (even on rainy days!). They make their nests out of moss and line it with wool. As an educational ‘top up’, why not hang some different coloured wools around the garden and see what colour

This allows anyone to enter observations of butterflies and day-flying moths seen in their gardens, in the street or in the countryside. There is a straightforward submission form into which the details are entered, together with an interactive map to help determine the location. All records can be viewed in a table or on a map and for even the casual butterfly observer gives fascinating information on what is on the wing and where. The results so gathered will help to understand where butterflies are, and those habitats that are favourable to their success in maintaining stable (and we
hope increasing) populations. Butterfly numbers are very sensitive to environmental changes due to changed land use and are used as a measure of biodiversity. Grange and district lies on the Morecambe Bay limestones, which is home to many butterfly species some of which are national rarities. Places to see butterflies locally are on Hampsfell and in Allithwaite Quarry, which has been restored by the villagers and volunteers. The Branch web site also lists summer field trips where different sites are visited, both locally and further afield in Cumbria.

Society Round-up Cartmel and District Flower Club On Monday 17th march, we were treated to a selection of arrangements by Jackie Walker, celebrating the past and looking forward to the future. She included several types of craft work, from hand made containers to easter rings. The stage looked a picture when she had finished and everyone had a very pleasant afternoon. On Monday 14th April we welcome Ann Morgan from Morecambe with “a grand day out”. There will be no lunch this month and the meeting will start at 2pm. Visitors are always welcome. At this meeting please remember to pay £15 if you are going on the trip to Penrith.
Cartmel Art Society
Last month on a lovely sunny afternoon our members got together for the society’s spring party and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious jacobs join buffet. The subject for the Roy Johnson competition this year was “memories”. Our members produced some lovely pictures and the prize went to Doreen Hannigan whose painting was “memories of a day in Cleveleys.” Doreen was delighted to also win the favourite card competition. Many thanks to our members and friends for donating an abundance of art materials for the usual entertaining auction, proceeds of which will be going to Macmillan Nurses. We welcome membership enquiries from both men and ladies. If you enjoy painting and are keen to be actively involved please ring the secretary on 015395 33725 for more information, and visit cartmelartsociety.co.uk to find out more about us.
Chamber of Trade
The chamber operates as a non profitable organisation and its main aim is to raise funds for local charities. Members of the chamber are local businesses, and as a collective we also keep up to date on local developments. The chamber has just had its latest AGM and we are pleased to report that our members are growing yearly. The financial report was strong
and we were able to donate money to Grange Primary School and Bay Search & Rescue. The AGM concluded that it will continue to subsidise the hanging baskets for members as this helps to improve our chances with Britain in Bloom. It was also discussed that we should hold a summer event, which would complement the Christmas extravaganza, more news will follow but we are leaning towards a vintage fair at present, anyone that may be interested please contact the chamber. We are also planning an Easter event which will involve the intrepid explorer in you, the “dragon slayer” treasure hunt, will hopefully take place over the Easter weekend along with an Easter egg hunt in the park; details of this will be sent to all local schools. Any business or sole trader is very welcome to join the chamber and we would love for you to contact us, our motto is strongly becoming “the more the merrier”.
Coffee Club
In March we welcomed Revd. Nick Hallam from Hawkshead who reviewed Tom Wright’s book “how God became king”. Sadly, we have forgotten what the four gospels relate to. Our Christian creeds jump from Jesus’ birth to his crucifixion. But Jesus came to announce that the Kingdom of God has arrived and from that moment Jesus is King. His kingdom is now accomplished but not yet fully implemented. His kingdom is not one of military might but of loving sacrificial service… an example Jesus empowers his disciples to follow. Nick showed how four elements need to be held in balance: the history of Israel, Israel’s God coming back to his people, the launching of God’s renewed people and the clash between the Kingdoms of God and of ‘Ceasar.’ Tom Wright shows that the Jesus, who became human at Bethlehem, is Israel’s expected Messiah and his public ministry, bypassed frequently by our ecclesiastical creeds, had a key role in that. Ultimately our authorities and governments are limited by his control. Next month on April 15th coffee at Abbot Hall precedes the talk at 10.45am. Alison Gawith will tell of her meeting ‘the suffering church in Ethiopia.’
Crake Valley Croquet Club
Spring is here. Why not join us at Crake Valley Croquet Club. Croquet combines outdoor physical activity and ‘mind games’ often associated with snooker or chess. The handicap system allows people of all ages and both sexes to play on equal terms, learning and improving at the same time. Crake Valley Croquet Club is a welcoming club keen to recruit new members to the ‘Queen of Sports’. Whether you have played before, are an absolute beginner, or ‘might be interested’, we cordially invite you

The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch
This month Gillian Darrington brought some beautiful and delicately embroidered calico gardens to inspire us. Using calico as a base she suggested we start off with a focal point for our garden such as a window, door, gate, stile or tree. So we set to work, either making our focal point in card covered with material, or heavy stitching with padding. Once the focal point was in place gillian showed us how to build up stitch around the focal point to look like flowers and foliage. Everything was embroidered in neutral colours so the texture of the stitching was very important. We were also shown how to add little details such as stones and pebbles by stuffing neutral fabric or tights and attaching to the surface.Gradually calico gardens began to appear and all thanks go to Gillian for her inspiration. The next meeting is Tuesday 1st April when we will all be meeting at the Harris Museum in Preston for a talk on their textile collection. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Anne Covell on 01539 737049.
Grange and District Action Group
Planning matters. Something of a negative report, this month, i’m afraid. Anyone travelling between Grange & Allithwaite will have noticed an area of hedge on Allithwaite Road which has been marked out as the access to the upcoming site for 42 houses at Berry Bank. Its presence already proves our arguments about traffic site-lines. This is a precursor to the commencement of work on the site; the application was marginally passed last month by one vote, in (once again) contentious circumstances – even one of our local councillors, a member of the planning committee, having argued vociferously against it then abstained from voting. Not, it has to be said, a councillor from Grange. An application for an increase in the number of permanent holiday homes/caravans at Low Fellgate Caravan Park has emerged for a second time, with marginal differences from the original. It is understood that
there have been substantial unauthorised workings on the limestone pavements. There will be a large loss of existing open green field. This will undoubtedly exacerbate the runoff from this site into Cartmel Road and thence to Sedgwick Court, already inundated in times of heavy rain. Doubtless Gadag and GTC will oppose this application once again. The application for conversion of the British Legion into a convenience store remains in the pipeline, despite a ‘consultation’ with the developers, who are from Prestwich and have only one aim in mind. Unfortunately, as we know, Westminster is determined to pursue a proliferation of housing throughout the country and there are similar groups everywhere trying to defend their much-loved towns and villages. We support the development at Berners, despite its lack of beauty; it is needed. We are not nimby’s but realists. Perhaps our only defence will be at the ballot-box too late. Peter Nightingale, Gadag secretary 07751 087292 or email gos.housing.kbr@gmail.com
Grange and District U3a
We held a busy and successful enrolment day in the Victoria Hall on 18 March when membership was renewed and a number of newcomers joined us, bringing current membership to over 330. There was a rolling slideshow of group activities, interest groups displayed their ‘wares’ on tables around the hall and the music group supplied the background cultural sound. Tea and coffee flowed, and many biscuits consumed. Judging by the noise level, a good time was had by all. In addition to the usual group activities in community venues and private homes, this is the time of year when outdoor programmes are developed – local explorers, the walking groups, cycling, birdwatching and geology groups are all finalising plans for the year. The biggest projects are those organised by mg of ‘out and about’ whose plans include a visit to Macclesfield silk mill and Dunham Massey, another to the Wedgwood visitor centre and Trentham Gardens and a group holiday to Cornwall. It’s all happening in Grange U3a! Information about Grange and district U3a can be found at www. u3asites.org.uk/grange, in a ring binder in the resources room of the library and in leaflets at the tourist information office.
Grange Lions
Several members of Grange Lions attended the 31st annual convention of district 105BN Northwest and IOM. This was held at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal. The international guest was Ancar Benedict from Romania. We heard about the fundraising for Alice’s Escapes, the Hearing Dogs charity and Disability Awareness. Following lunch, several district trophies were presented to young people who took part in youth football,
the district music competition and district young ambassador competition. On 25th April at 7.30pm Grange Lions are holding a friends and family social event in the Father Magner room, St. Charles’ Church, Grange Over Sands. The theme will be “foods around the world” at a cost of £5 per head. Anyone who finds to find out more please contact David or Helen Khan at “The Pastures” to book your place. 015395 34252 or 07890 613 842
Grange Men`s Forum
The latest show to join forum`s theatre outings programme is the exhilarating broadway musical Barnum starring Brian Conley at Manchester Palace on Wednesday, November 5th. Reservations have to be confirmed by April 15th. A few seats may still be available for Brassed Off at Blackpool Grand on Thursday, April 17th. Two outings have been arranged for members and guests during the summer; the annual lunch at Kendal College on Thursday, May 22nd, and a coach trip to three major attractions in County Durham on Thursday, June 26th. Guests have two activities to choose from before the college lunch. Kendal musician and lecturer Edward Lawton will give a whimsical talk called the Oboe and I, in the college lecture room at 11am, while for those wanting a more active morning, there is the option of a guided walk around old Kendal led by a member of the civic trust, starting from the parish church car park at 10am. Lunch, prepared and served by the students, is at 12.15Pm. Bookings for the lunch and for Barnum to Donald Shepherd (Grange 33475). The annual summer outing heads first to the national railway museum outstation at Shildon, which houses many exhibits from the age of steam. Then it`s on to Auckland Castle at Bishop Auckland, home of the Princebishop which has only recently been opened to the public, followed by a visit to the Durham dales centre near Stanhope. Bookings to Alan Anderson (Grange 33696).
Grange Over Sands Golf Club
Well, here we are a quarter way through the year already, where does time go? The weather is now being kinder to us and the course is in good condition for us To go out and enjoy a round of golf whether it be in a competition or just a friendly round. The Captain’s drive-ins are at the beginning of April and then we get all the competitions going on each week. Thursday is Ladies’ Day and Saturday is when the men play their competitions. We have a full fixture list and lots of opens for visitors to enter. If anyone is interested, just go on line to our website www. grangegolfclub.co.uk where you can book tee times for the opens and also for casual golf. The opens can also be booked by phoning the office on 015395 33180 option 4.
Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. There are several social functions coming up throughout the year for both members and visitors all of which can be found on the website. Grange Soroptimists A Fairtrade coffee morning, with Soroptimists and Grange school working together, was very successful. Participation from local businesses included at home providing Fairtrade coffee and biscuits and Fletchers stocking Fairtrade bananas. More participation from local businesses would be welcomed as grange needs to maintain Fairtrade status. The Staying Safe project in local secondary schools, which is a joint venture between Grange Soroptimists and young Cumbria, is being adapted for use with year 6 children in primary schools. On 8th March, Grange members joined members of S.I. Barrow and Windermere to mark international Women’s Day with an event in Barrow market hall. Other groups involved included the Barrow women’s centre, girl guides and the multicultural forum. Members talked to the public regarding international Women’s day, Soroptimism and our projects including staying safe. We hope the project will be extended to Barrow secondary schools after interest shown by local teachers and John Woodcock MP. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on our work and events see our website www.sigbi.org/grangeover-sands/

Treasurer - Mr Vincent Carter, Box Secretary - Mr Bill Byford Mothers’ Union Grange Branch We had a very busy meeting on 5th March with a small but enthusiastic group of members. After the change of leadership, there was much to discuss and plans to be made. After welcome and midday prayers, lunch was enjoyed. It was agreed that raising awareness and encouraging growth in the Grange branch was paramount. Ideas were discussed for attracting all age groups, also lapsed members. An open day, quiz evening, MU beetle drive, fair trade pass the parcel, garden party, MU bible sale, were some of the ideas discussed. Meetings would be informative and commence with short prayers and worship as
always, but “fun” would also play an important role. This was followed by our formal meeting and our diocesan wave of prayer service. Our next meeting will be Wednesday 2nd April, at St Paul’s meeting room when we will be “sewing and knitting” hats, rugs, gowns and crosses for the MU project “gowns of love”.They are for the premature baby unit and chapel at Furness General Hospital. Our leader will be Kath Wise, who is MU action and outreach project leader for furness and has been involved in this project for many years. Samples and patterns will be provided.I’m told she is a very humorous lady!
Newton and Field Broughton WI
The business part of the March meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI was very busy as February’s meeting was cancelled and there were lots of topics to be covered. Chris Winnick entertained the members with his magic. A retired teacher, he does magic shows for children but very successfully kept his adult audience enthralled with his dexterity and fascinating commentary. Next month’s meeting will be on Millom heavy horses. It will take place on Wednesday 9th April at Lindale village hall starting at 7.30Pm.
Rotary Club of Grange over Sands
Life at the margins was the title of the talk given by Rev. Dr Jonathon Pye. It will be a day that will stay in our minds for a very long time. His talk about the rights, morals and ethics of life. It turned out to be one of the most fascinating and thought provoking talks the members had listened to. Rev. Dr Pye touched upon medical ethics and the law from the very conception of life to its ultimate end and everything in between. Also in January, Club President Dr. Richard Fell presented a defibrillator to Netherwood Hotel proprietor Mike Fallowfield for permanent placement in reception. Training was given by Grange First Responders team to staff and members of rotary club. In February, Frank McCall gave an informative talk on the history of IT and the development of email. We all have different levels of knowledge but there was something for everyone. On the 19th February, Paul Ramsey showed slides of ‘nature’s picture’ at the open meeting. Welcome to new member John Biddlestone from Worsley rotary club. Sadly we say goodbye to valuable member Peter Watson. Peter has moved to Cheltenham and we wish both him and his wife Pat best wishes.
St. Mary’s Hospice Friendship and Support Group
As St. Paul’s parish hall is closing, we have moved to the Father Magner room at St. Charles Church, Kents Bank Rd, Grange. Everything else remains
the same. The support we offer to anyone touched by cancer or any life shortening illness is still the same. It may help you to be among other people rather than being alone. Come along and see if we can help. For further information please contact Marie on 33279 or Betty 32035.
The Grange - over Sands Institute
After an unremarkable A.G.M. The committee of the institute is settled into the management of the building and the projects include the replacement of much of the aged heating system that has kept this ancient building warm over recent decades. With the intention of updating an old system to make it both greener and more efficient, the charity is faced with costs as high as £10,000. This is the subject of an appeal and the committee wishes to acknowledge and thank the generous donors which include, up to the end of february: The Grange and Cartmel forum, the Bay Villa Trust, B. O’Connor, J. Shannon, A. Little, J. McGarr, D. Preston, R. Sharp, Mr. & Mrs. P. Rowland, Mr. & Mr. P. Kimber, Mr. & Mrs. S. Taylor, Ms. P. Jones and that does not include the anonymous ones who are also thanked. Anyone wishing to help further should contact the Treasurer, Lawrie Woodley on 015395 36554.
Townswomen’s Guild report
The AGM was followed by a much over-subscribed jacob’s join tea! The Treasurer reported that we now had a surplus in the bank as a result of the belt tightening. The Committee remains largely the same but we welcomed Ivy Johnson as our new Chairman and Barbara Smith as the new Vice-Chairman. The new programme was available to paid-up members. New members are always welcome. The next meeting will be held at St.Charles church room at 2pm on Thursday 10th April. We welcome Ken McDuff, who will entertain us with his favourite music. For many years Ken was a hospital radio DJ and has a wealth of easy-listening musical knowledge. This is an open meeting and visitors are welcome to join us . Any enquiries please to Sylvia on 32215.

The sun shone on members as they visited the gardens
of Swarthmoor hall and later went on to Ford Park . The next meeting will be the district AGM on Tuesday 15th April. Grange Trefoil are hosting this at Cartmel village hall.
Witherslack WI
The March meeting was well attended and 2 new members were welcomed. Andy Lowe, on his 19th visit to Witherslack, took us round some Lake District villages pointing out the details on the buildings which indicated their age, and describing what life would have been like in bygone days. He first came to us 21 years ago and his enthusiasm never fails to involve us. Troutbeck and Askham are his favourites. The WI will contribute a display for the church`s WW1 centenary event in May. Two possible summer outings were proposed. Next meeting April 8th. Joan Bentley, flower arranger “ spring into spring” visitors welcome tel 52302
Grange and District Art Society
In March the ‘Miss Garrett’ competition took place with entries into four categories Debbie Simmonds won “the hot day” and also joint first prize, shared with Joan Leech, for “running riot”. Liz Goodwin won “heritage”, Peter Williams won “country fair” and was also declared overall winner of the competition. Congratulations to all, the winning pictures may be viewed on our website. On Thursday 20th of March, John Sibsen discussed the use of acrylics and palette knives. The final result was a Hebridean seascape, with sea and rocks to the fore and the isles of Rhum and Eigg in the background. An excellent afternoon. Our third evening meeting occurs on Friday, April 4th at St Paul’s parish hall, from 7.15pm to 9.15pm. So if you think you might be a blossoming artist or even an eager enthusiast, come and join us, everyone is welcome. The final evening session on May 2nd will be a demonstration in watercolour by Peter Threlfall, a well known local artist. Peter’s skills can be seen on his website. Surprisingly, charges at the door remain at only £4 for this occasion but there will be a small charge for refreshments. Take the opportunity to watch the expert and enjoy!
Grange Drama
The next event is on Tuesday 15th April, in the institute at 7.30pm when Kath Bolton will
lead a reading of ‘Humble Boy’ by Charlotte Jones, a play that was produced at The National Theatre and which Grange Drama hopes to stage in 2015. It requires 3 men and 3 women so if you would like to take part in the reading, with or without commitment, or simply come along to listen, you are cordially invited to do so. Grange Drama are also producing studio performances of two of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays, ‘The Bear’ and ‘the proposal’ in the Methodist church hall, Kents Bank Road on Thursday to Saturday, 10th-12th July 2014. They date from about 1890 and are what Chekhov described as jests, or Vaudeville, pieces. Anyone who thinks they know Chekhov through the likes of Uncle Vanya, the seagull or the three sisters will be very surprised at the difference in these two shorter works. The casts will shortly start rehearsals, and fuller details of how to get tickets will be in May and June editions of Grange Now, but for the moment make a note of the dates in your diaries!

We are situated by the side of the river just down from the bridge leading to the square. We hold regular services every Sunday morning and a monthly Coffee Morning on the last Saturday of each month from March to November. We are a relatively small congregation in number but large in the welcome we extend to anyone who visits us at any time. Grange Methodist The Annual Soup and Dessert lunch hosted by the Women’s network at Grange Methodist Church happened to fall on St Valentine’s Day and it was advertised as ‘made and served with love’. Over sixty people were served with homemade soups and appetising and calorific desserts. The proceeds (£291), is for Overseas Missions. The Open Fellowship at Grange Methodist Church welcomed Barbara Leader and her husband, who had a power point presentation showing the structure of Beavers, Cub Scouts and Scouts movement to which they are both very committed. On Tuesday, 25th February, Mrs Doreen Wright was the speaker at the Women’s Network at Grange over Sands Methodist Church. As the daughter of a Methodist Minister and later the
wife of a Methodist Minister, Doreen lived at 25 different addresses. The President, Mrs Marion Briddock, was presented with a card, to commemorate her 60th Wedding Anniversary. On Wednesday the 5th March, the Methodist Schoolroom in Grange was alive with activity, when the local Soroptomists organised a Fairtrade Coffee morning. There were stalls, selling Fairtrade goods and a cake stall. The cakes were also
Over 70 women attended this special service at St Paul’s Church on the 7th March, prepared this year by the Christian women of Egypt. The theme chosen for the service was ‘Streams in the desert’, remembering that the hot, dry desert land of Egypt relies on the River Nile for water, food and transportation. The theme flowed like a river through the service, with the promise of the living water that never runs dry featured in the bible readings, prayer and hymns. The Rev’d. Celia McCulloch gave a moving and thought-provoking address, encouraging us to pray for grace that we might ‘water’ the arid places in our communities and our world, doing what we
can, even in a small way, to refresh them and to bring hope and healing. Jenny Leahy led the service, with Charles Edmondson as the organist, and individual members of all the churches in Grange took part. The collection raised £209 which will be used to help the work of the Women’s World Day of Prayer in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Relaxing and sun kissed days were a welcome change from the winds and rains of Grange. The sun certainly shines in Goa during February, but the flight to get there is not one of my favourite pastimes. However, nice though it was it is always good to return home. The kindness and desire to help was a shot in the arm for human nature. I’m not sure whether it was due to my smiling and charming personality – though perhaps it was the fact I was walking with two sticks!! To celebrate daily Mass in shorts and a T shirt made a pleasant change from the daily routine of Grange.

On Thursday, 6th March, the Open Fellowship had their fortnightly meeting when the speaker was Olwen Keogh, MBE, from Silverdale. Mrs Keogh was instrumental in setting up the charity, ‘Chernobyls Children’, and described how a group of children come visiting for a month in the summer. During this time, they are not only given a holiday, but have health and dental checks. The charity is now operating in many groups country wide.

made with Fairtrade ingredients. Some children from Grange Primary School helped, they were most interested because they are presently working on a project on Nepal.
Presbytery after an early morning swim, I see a gentleman, whose name I know not, striding out with his bucket and rubbish ‘picker-up’, clearing the bits and pieces us careless people needlessly drop, thus littering the streets of Grange. He is doing such a great job. Well done, unknown gentleman. The Saturday after Ash Wednesday was an important day for Andrew and Stuart and their families. Along with 50+ men and women – young and middle aged, they joined Bishop Michael at the Cathedral in
and projects run by Christian charities around the world.
The service is held on the first Friday of March each year, the first taking place on the Island of Samoa as dawn breaks The world is then circled in prayer for 36 hours as the service is celebrated in over 170 countries until the last one is held in American Samoa. Our next year’s service will be held in the Chapel of Boarbank Hall, and the material will be prepared by the women of the Bahamas on the theme of ‘Jesus said to them: do you know what I have done to you?’ Lancaster to take their 1st visible and positive step at the Rite of Election to full communion with the Catholic Church. Arts & Music Blitz - “She’s at it again” She certainly is. Christine Bell has once again delighted audiences, with her excellent choreography and keen directing skills with toe tapping tear jerker, Blitz. The play was polished with standout performances from Jean Malkin as the irrepressible Mrs Blitzstein, Rachel Muir as sexy Elsie, comedy duo Mick Malkin and Richard Tyler, and cracking vocals from leading lovebirds Olivia Muir and Curtis Medley, who has recently gained a place at a top London stage school.
A special mention has to go to the children who all put in excellent performances as the evacuees, and in particular the scene in which they sang ‘Mums and Dads’, without a step out of place and not a single note off key – well done. And talking about being in tune, the orchestra, ably led by the talented and impossibly young looking conductor/ musical director, Tom Gray, put in faultless performances and were a pleasure to listen to. The supporting cast were in fine voice and their backing performances made the whole show very enjoyable and the sound and lighting guys produced some great special effects. As Christine’s last production for Grange and District Amateur Operatic Society, the World War 2 tale of life in war torn London sees the end a 25 year run for her with the society, and she will be a huge loss. All in all, as a swan song Christine has done herself, and us, proud.

Rusty Bullets raise the roof for St. Mary’s Hospice
The support group for the hospice held a pie and pea supper on Saturday night at Greenodd village hall which included music and dancing to Rusty Bullets who are a well known local band. The evening was very well supported and practically a sell out! The evening was started off with the hugely talented David Kay who is a former pupil of Cartmel Priory School singing a selection of popular songs and playing his guitar. Rusty Bullets then came on and played their fantastic array of rock songs which was enjoyed by everyone. Due to the wonderful generosity of rusty bullets waiving their fee for the evening and all who attended the group managed to raise the magnificent amount of £780 for the hospice.!!! Thanks to all who supported us. The group’s next event is the ever popular fashion show in Café Ambio by Two by Two of Ulverston on 25th April which is reflecting the silver anniversary of the hospice.

Ruth finds new career working as a freelance gardener Ruth first started working as a freelance gardener 3 years ago, whilst still studying horticulture part time at Newton Rigg College in Penrith. She was made redundant on 31 March 2011 and the following day started her first job in gardening, at a beautiful private garden in Grange. She still works there one to two days a week and it is her favourite place to be. She has designed gardens in the past for herself and for friends, but professionally, she has now completed four and is starting on a fifth. Creating plant lists and planting plans is my favourite part of designing. Arranging the plants in a new garden is like painting with flowers.

The Three Parks Group currently has 30 members who are actively involved in renovating, restoring and bringing new life and colour to the Promenade, the Ornamental Gardens and Park Road Gardens. The group is always looking for new members, so if you want to get involved and help with this very worthwhile work of restoration you will be very welcome. For for more information or to volunteer, please contact Ron Shapland on 33706.
Cartmel in Bloom have a Vision Cartmel in Bloom presented their vision to an enthusiastic audience at the Grandstand of the iconic Cartmel Racecourse. Cartmel in Bloom Chair, David Crabtree, outlined the organisation’s ideas for enhancing the village through horticulture. He emphasised the benefits of “pulling together” when discussing matters such as the reduction of street clutter, protecting the heritage of Cartmel and improving awareness of environmental and recycling issues. Cartmel businesses, representatives of the Parish, District and County Councils as well as residents and volunteers listened intently as a variety of suggestions were discussed and the Committee was delighted to answer questions following the talk. David thanked Sarah Byrne, Garden Designer and Landscape Horticulturalist, for her professional advice and expertise to help Cartmel in Bloom to develop their vision. Jonathan Garratt was happy to organise and host the event and said, “it was really good to see so many people coming together.

Apart from general weeding and pruning, tired and overgrown borders are cleared and replanted to refresh each area to keep it looking colourful. Our entry into Cumbria in Bloom in 2013 in the’ It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category resulted in an award of outstanding for the promenade. We were delighted with this accolade, but even more so when we were successful in the same category in Britain In

Grange in Bloom Group
The Grange in Bloom Group is a small group within the structure of the Civic Society. We work in partnership with SLDC and Continental Landscapes to enhance the local environment with special emphasis on the open spaces in Grange to increase the visual impact for visitors and residents. Our garden projects to date have included the clearing and replanting of borders at Cox’s Corner, Main Street carpark underpass, the border above the Veterans’ Garden and our ongoing project to improve the Station Gardens. We have had great success in Cumbria in Bloom with gold awards in the past few years and are keen to maintain the high standard we have achieved for the benefit of the town. To achieve all of this, and to help make Grange a pleasant place to live, work and to visit we desperately need more help!! If you feel that you would like to help please contact Jan Tomlinson 36919
The removal of the silt from the southern end of the pond in the Ornamental Gardens has been completed by Continental Landscapes on behalf of the District Council. The Group is contributing £200 towards the cost of the work. Two terraces have been created and the District Council proposes to add a layer of mulch to both of them. Planting of the area has started and will continue when ground conditions allow, as some parts still need to dry out.
Halecat The mild nature of winter’s progress to date, has, as you’d expect left many plants in a state of semidormancy, particularly those that hang on until the very end of October into early November This isn’t a significant problem with those plants rooted in the soil, it can however prove tricky for those destined to spend their first 1-2 years growing in the confines of plant pots. We struggle sometimes with this semi-dormancy as the shock of a March frost or dump of snow can accelerate moulds and tissue damage. Prone areas to potential damage are the roots and the growing tips of the plant. The Primula family is a large one of which we grow a sizeable number annually on the nursery; this is one group of plants that don’t appreciate a ‘mixed-up’ winter. Tom Attwood runs the nursery at Halecat in Witherslack with his wife Abi. A nursery, garden and gardening school rolled into one.
Letters to the Editor
The obvious knee jerk reaction is to make it one way traffic but I don’t think we should go quite as far overboard as one of your correspondents who proposes one way AND removal of roadside parking bays. If roadside parking were removed then what would be the point of making it one way? The road would then be wide enough to function as it was intended. Or put the other way by making it one way what then would be the point of removing roadside parking? The whole point of roadside parking is to provide access to local shops. Some of us have seen through the myth that it is cheaper to drive to Kendal or Barrow to shop. To suggest that delivery vehicles to the Co-op should be made to use their access slipway is another straw in the wind approach. It is NOT designed for vehicular access and if so used would then block the pavement as well as a pedestrian walk through from Fernleigh Rd. There are times when large delivery vehicles, often arriving together, do cause congestion all too frequently made worse by local drivers parking in daft places. Giving everyone in Grange a copy of the Highway Code might be one cheap way of overcoming part of the problem. The difficulties being experienced can be put right with simple traffic management and we don’t need to have an expensive Consultation Study to indicate how it can be achieved. Thought has to be given to consequential problems elsewhere in Town by any changes made to Kents Bank Rd. At the time of writing due to the work on Grange Fell Rd. traffic is using Fell Drive/Fernhill Rd as a through route but these roads are not designed for other than purely local traffic. Make Kents Bank Rd one way and this is the first ‘new’ problem which will have to be dealt with. As to the suggestion to limit Kents Bank Rd to 20 m.p.h. has your correspondent observed the driving habits of those traversing the 20 m.p.h we already have in Grange? The suggestions to which I refer are fine in their intent but need to be thought out a bit before pronouncement. The state of our Promenade is perhaps a much more serious issue and threat to the well being of our town and requiring urgent attention as well as the eyesore on the seafront. J. Smith, Grange
Dear Editor,
I write on behalf of the governors, pupils, staff, parents and carers of Allithwaite C E School to thank the trustees of the Michelle Jurd Trust Fund for the significant funding you have granted us from the charitable Trust. The pupils have gained a huge amount from the outdoor education opportunities which the funding has enabled us to offer them. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to kayak, orienteer, raft build and experience adventure days but they have also learnt a lot about themselves. They have had opportunities to learn how they can work in teams and as individuals in order to challenge their perceptions and anxieties within safe and secure boundaries. In the current climate of tight budgetary constraints I hope we can continue to benefit from the Trust in order to enhance even further the education of our pupils through outdoor and cultural experiences. Thank you for the support and we wish the Michelle Jurd Trust every success with the events planned for 2014. Diane E Fenton, Chair of Governors. Allithwaite C of E Primary School
Dear Editor,
Thank you for the Music - ‘BLITZ’, what a wonderful show, presented by our very own Grange and District Operatic Society in March. There were many humorous situations and some tragic, all beautifully portrayed by a full cast and included our bright and enthusiastic younger people of the Society. We were transported back to the 1940’s , when London was being attacked, but life went on and the British camaraderie carried families through the ordeals of war, with some light hearted humour to help them all through. The whole show was full of music and dialogue, an amazing display of brilliant memories in remembering all the music and all the words, we don’t know how you did it! Congratulations to all for a marvellous array of talents across the board and a big thank you for all your dedicated hard work bringing live theatre to our town. You are inspirational! With our increase in computer tablets in school this has meant that our children are becoming increasingly proficient in developing the use of ICT in their learning. This month some of our

Our garden has woken from its long winter sleep and we have been busy sowing seeds for summer colour and flavour. We have also been representing how animals grow and change with the help of paint and glue etc. Grange Lions have been very generous in their support, after we helped them follow Santa. Gemma’s unstinting efforts for us have secured a Natwest grant. Sarah, Liz, Michelle and Emma have donated unwanted toys. So a big thank you to these and all our other loyal supporters. Cartmel Priory C of E School recently celebrated an ‘Active Reading week’ commencing with a Readathon assembly on Thursday 6 March. Readathon is a sponsored reading event that helps seriously ill children through various charities, including Clic Sargent and Roald Dahl’s Children’s charity. Local author, Russell Fralick, came to talk to students in Years 8 & 9 about his book, ‘Over the Top’, and the experiences he had whilst climbing which gave him his Christian faith. A climbing wall was in school for the day, provided by Mere Mountains, and pupils also took part in a creative writing workshop about the great outdoors, decorated ties as a book cover and recorded short stories on film in 16 seconds! All forms and various departments also decorated their doors in the theme of a book. The winning entry was from 8JB, the Secret Garden (pictured below). We have also pictured some of the other decorated doors. It was a brilliant day in school, enjoyed by all.

Designed to be fun and inspiring, the Grange-over-Sands Fresh Start event, is at the Netherwood Hotel on Tuesday 6th May at 7.00 pm Fresh Start will encourage women who might want to make a change in their lives to think about what they wear, what they’re good at, and what they might want to do next. Tim’s Column
I want to take this opportunity to pay a tribute to the people of Grange. I know it is controversial with some of you but I think that the work that has been done to put in place the development plans for the Berners site has been brilliant and will be great not just for Grange but for much of South Lakeland. Residents, the town council and the district council you should all feel very proud of themselves. The new health centre is amazing and exactly what a community like Grange needs, particularly in the face of the changing nature of health care in this country. You are so lucky to have it. But in addition to this the provision of affordable houses and flats on the site will provide a lasting benefit for years to come. According to the most recent figures I have there are over 100 people on the waiting list for housing in Grange. As a statistic this is surprising enough, however, the key thing about housing statistics is not just to see them in terms of numbers but in terms of people. In my surgeries I see so many people with housing problems. Families who have to squeeze into spaces far too small for them to live proper lives or who live under the constant worry that they may have to move again very shortly. With the threat of uprooting children from their schools and moving away from their families, making future planning all but impossible, all of which creates a pressure that is almost intolerable for people to live under. Of course the ideal is to buy a house and if you can afford to do this that is great but in many parts of this area the price of homes is eleven times higher than the average salary. That is on par with Oxford the city in this country with the greatest gap between salaries and housing prices. I had a meeting with Cumbrian housing associations in Westminister only the other day to discuss this very issue and all agreed that much needed to be done from giving the associations more flexibility on how they can raise money through to the freedom to avoid having to sell off existing affordable homes and key amongst this is the need for more public land to be made available for homes to be built. So it is a brilliant thing that is being done in Grange and one that will make a significant contribution to sorting this out this dreadful issue, at least in this part of the Cartmel Peninsular. One other matter I wanted to draw your attention to is the Coastal Communities Fund. I have mentioned this in Grange Now before, it is a pot of some £20 million that the Government has created specifically to help communities around the coast with plans they have to improve their areas and boost economic development. We have been lucky here, winning funds for development around Morecambe Bay and in Barrow. The closing date for the next round of funding is the end of April and so if you know of an organisation who could benefit from this please go to the www.gov.uk website. As ever if you need my help with anything you write to me at Acland House, Smokehouse Yard, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk. Thanks for your support Tim
