Lido gets a makeover

At a meeting on Wednesday (August 27) South Lakeland District Council’s (SLDC) cabinet councillors voted to support the Supermarket Levy proposal. If the proposal is adopted, it allows the council to put a levy on large supermarkets in their areas. Councils will then be able to put the money raised back into the local community to boost jobs, trade and services. This prompts us to ask what the future holds on the Cartmel peninsula. Will Booths be built? Will it become part of Sainsburys or Waitrose? If not a supermarket on the Toyota site then what? Will any of these supermarkets, including Tesco now have to pay money into the local community and if so how much and who would decide how it can be used? Could the levy be applied to smaller supermarkets? We need answers, and Grange Now are investigating. Meanwhile there is a compound effect taking place of pressure on bus and train services along with an increase in housing volume. Less transport for more people? Read more on page 3. Grange Town Council have applied for designation of the Parish as a Neighbourhood Area with a view to preparing a Neighbourhood Plan. Mayor Tricia Thomas opens the Lido gallery

The Lido on the Promenade has long been a sad and sorry sight. After closing over 20 years ago, the iconic outdoor pool has fallen into disrepair which many describe as, ‘an eyesore’ but now thanks to the enterprise and imagination of Town Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas and Councillor Joanna Greenway, it has now been transformed by a diverse range of pictures. Tricia saw the opportunity to use the hoardings on the now-closed Lido to show a fantastic range of photographs, from nineteenth century cocklers on the Bay to images of Bay Search and Rescue’s latest rescue vehicles.

Grange has also hosted the Morecambe Bay Partnership 2020 Photographic Exhibition and Councillor Thomas explained that she wanted to complement this,

“The Lido was built in 1934 and was a beautiful building. Sadly, it has become derelict and we hope that this exhibition on the Lido will bring some beauty back to this part of our Edwardian Promenade. The Lido Gallery aims to celebrate the beauty of our town and enhance the outside of the Lido while it awaits a new lease of life.

Twenty-two local small businesses and private individuals have sponsored the images, and Richard Fletcher of Fletcher’s Greengrocers said, “the Lido is unique and it is really good that we have had the chance to take part in this. Let’s hope this is the beginning of improvements and we can bring the Lido back to life.” Grange Now sponsored the high tide scene. Chris said “We are delighted to be a part of such an innovative and positive project.” The Town Council Leader, Councillor Tom Harvey is impressed with the changes at the Lido and told Grange Now, “the Lido has been transformed. It is fabulous that so many local businesses and the community have come together so quickly to make this happen.”

Lido in Penzance is thrown a £1.95 million lifeline The Jubilee Pool, a seawater lido in Penzance, which was up until last year, still very much open for business, has been thrown a lifeline. Freelance journalist Alex Wade wrote in the Weekend section of the Daily Telegraph on August 16th, of how the lido took “a hell of a battering” during the winter storms and suffered some fairly serious structural damage. Almost immediately a campaign was launched to raise the necessary funds needed to repair the pool. Interestingly, during the second week of August, the group heard that they had successfully secured a staggering £1.95 million from the Coastal Communities Fund. This was followed by contributions from Cornwall Council of £500,000 Local Enterprise Partnership £240,000, Penzance Town Council and the campaigners themselves have added £160,000 to the pot. No infrastructure as bus routes get cut

Proposed cuts to both buses and trains are coming at a time when new and affordable housing schemes are expected to be built all over the peninsula but surely if there is a need for more housing, there is an even greater need for the infrastructure to support them. Does it not follow that there is a need for more buses not less. The first development of affordable housing, next to Berners Close, is rapidly taking shape and is due to be completed in Spring 2015. It seems rather bizarre to be told you are eligible for an ‘affordable house’ but you will need to have a car to get anywhere! One of our readers, Colin Reakes, obviously concurs with this view as you will

County Matters

As the summer comes to a close hopefully we can look forward to an Indian summer for the autumn. Unfortunately the County Council Local Committee for South Lakeland has confirmed its decision to impose on-street car parking charges on to the streets in Ambleside, Bowness and Kendal.

This was despite a very strong campaign by local residents and supported by all Conservative County Councillors to stop these charges. The Lib Dem Councillors voted this through at South Lakeland supported by their Labour partners in Carlisle. I will, with my Conservative colleagues, continue to fight these charges.

Another consequence of the Lib-Lab budget imposed on us at the February budget meeting is just coming into effect. This involves cuts to all rural bus subsidies across the County.

I am totally opposed to this proposal but we were out voted by the Lib Dem and

see from his letter to the Editor on the letters page. Subsidy for the 532 will end on Tuesday 14th October. The subsidy currently supports all journeys between 09:31 -17:31 and these will all be withdrawn with the exception of the 13:31 which will retain the subsidy. It is expected that a new service will provide journeys until Mid-

Labour Councillors at the meeting. The consequences of these cuts will be that late evening services for the X6 will be terminated shortly and the 532 circular route will also lose its subsidy in October. I am working with our transport team to help alleviate the cuts by hopefully persuading an operator to provide a service similar to the 532 which will operate on a fully commercial basis. National Grid for have requested everyone to take part in the consultation which is to be sent out to householders this month. The details are below and I hope as many people as possible send in their views. I am totally opposed to on land pylons but will support the undersea option. The manager of National Grid’s North West Coast Connections Project is urging people to make sure they have their say during the consultation exercise which starts on Thursday 4th September and runs until Friday 28th November 2014. Around 135,000 newsletters will be mailed out in the run-up to a series of 33 consultation events being held in September. These will go to homes

The 21:55 Barrow to Kendal and 23:15 return will only operate on Saturdays (i.e. the service will be withdrawn on Monday to Friday). Here at Grange Now we have already received complaints about the withdrawal of bus services with residents telling us “we are being left with no way of commuting between Grange and Flookburgh or Kendal and Grange.” Add to this the proposed rail changes with the threat of a potential move by the Department of Transport to remove TransPennine from our route leaving the entire operation to Northern. The impact for tourism, commuters and locals could be serious. Claims from the railway union the RMT state that a complete move to Northern as the single operator could mean older rolling stock, less carriages, poor station facilities and lack of passenger facilities and access for wheelchairs, prams, bikes etc. Perhaps more importantly it could mean an end to direct services to Manchester and beyond to the airport. What do you think? within one kilometre of the routes National Grid is consulting on. The newsletters will contain information about the Project and a map detailing the different routes being considered for the new connection. Copies will also be available from local libraries. The company has been asked to provide a new connection into the electricity transmission network for the proposed new 3.4 GW nuclear power station, Moorside, near Sellafield in West Cumbria and to export energy produced by an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. New Defibrillators A couple of months ago we used some publicity to try and recruit more responders. We had a half- page advertisement in the June edition of Grange Now and a stall at the Edwardian Festival, which resulted in a pleasing number of enquiries from potential volunteers. We were saddened to learn of the death of John Kirkman, a founder member of the team. John was an enthusiastic responder

and later due to other commitments, he stood down from that role and served as a member of the management committee and latterly as the auditor of our annual accounts. The security boxes have a keypad number, which is retained by the North West Ambulance control department. Following a

999 call for assistance, if the controller suspects that a defibrillator is needed, the caller will be given the number for the keypad to access the nearest security box. We are grateful to the owners of the properties for hosting the defibrillators and supporting the scheme, which has been established for the

Investment Matters In addition one may be entitled to various other elements of state pension such a state second pension, SERPS, pension credits, graduated pension etc. You need 30 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits to get the full basic state pension. It is possible to put off claiming your state pension and in this case you will be entitled to additional state pension or a lump sum payment, subject to various rules, when your state pension is drawn. You may have heard in the Press over recent months that changes are to take place with the state pension and presently these are planned to apply if you reach state pension age on or after 6th April 2016. The government has stated that the full new state pension will be no less than £148.40 per week although the actual amount will not be set until autumn 2015. One important change is that not only will you usually need ten qualifying years to get any state pension (as presently), but in order to receive the maximum new state pension you will need 35 qualifying years which is an increase from the current 30 qualifying years. Interestingly, the government has announced a new scheme which

allows individuals to top up their current state pension and this will be available as early as October 2015. This is in the form of a new voluntary class 3a National Insurance contribution.

As an illustration, the contribution required for an extra £1 of pension per week for a person aged 65 is £890. This equates to 5.84% and will increase with inflation. Whether or not this represents a good deal depends entirely upon the individual and is certainly not compulsory and so the fact that it is available can only a good thing. The whole spectra of pensions – whether it be state pension or private pensions – is undergoing huge transition as introduced in the Budget in March. The major emphasis from the government is on individuals taking greater control of their finances both in retirement and throughout life.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal Now is the time to start thinking about filling a shoebox for a child who will otherwise probably have nothing this Christmas … or last Christmas … in fact many of the children we have seen have never, in their lives, had any toys or gifts of any kind. Empty, covered shoeboxes and leaflets are now available from Grange Now. The leaflets give you details of the charity, the children and what to put into your shoebox - stationery and hygiene items, hat, scarf and gloves, and a few toys and sweets, plus a £2 donation so that we can pay for the transport to Romania. Your shoebox will be collected in early November ready for our local team to hand them out in early December. We have been hugely encouraged by the tremendous support for Boxes of Hope, Cumbria in its first year. With your support, we have been able to reach over 9,000 children with shoebox gifts; finish the building of a school extension; sponsor the education

of 36 children; buy a new minibus for transporting young disabled people to a day centre and for taking children on outings when funds allow; pay the electricity bill for an after school club which would otherwise have closed; provide money for dressings and ointment in 2 villages where residents had nasty lacerations; supply school uniform and other new clothing to hundreds of children; provide huge boxes of stationery supplies to various schools; fund a group of children to go to the zoo. We have sent teams in December to give out the shoeboxes, April to visit the new school extension and July to take 2 groups, each of 40 children, to a summer camp for their first ever holiday. All these trips have been self funded. Our administration

costs are minimal and we are all volunteers, so all money we raise goes to where it is needed. Our latest challenge is to raise money to buy a commercial washing machine for Tinca School. Attendance at school is often poor because the children have no clean clothes (because they have no running water at home) and they are ridiculed by

Dr Jane Irwin appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria The Lord-Lieutenant, Her Majesty The Queen’s representative in Cumbria, has appointed Dr Jane Irwin, of Nutwood Surgery, to be a Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria. Dr Irwin will take up this position under the name of Mrs Norman. Dr Irwin told Grange Now, “you are appointed until you are 75, and as I will have retired by then, I will become Deputy Lieutenant under my married name of Mrs Norman.” The Lord-Lieutenant is required to appoint a number of Deputy Lieutenants to assist in her duties, the maximum number being determined by the population of the county. The maximum number for Cumbria is 37. The role of the Deputy Lieutenants is varied and they act as the LordLieutenant’s “eyes and ears” within local

Silver Sunday - valuing our older generation

Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Councillor Christabel Flight, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. The aim was to celebrate the value and knowledge older residents contribute to our communities, while at the same time combating loneliness, and to help those who need it, to get out and about and meet new people. It is a day of fun and free activities for older people. Silver Sunday 2012 was a fantastic success with over 2000 people taking part in 19 events in Westminster alone. It gained the support of Joanna Lumley, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Michael Parkinson. The following year then saw Silver Sunday go national and

the event grew significantly with over 150 events being held across the country. Everyone can get involved, whether that’s organising an event, spreading the word, or simply attending an activity. This year’s Silver Sunday will take place on 5th October 2014. From concerts to museum tours, cycle rides to chocolate tastings, there’s something for everyone. 8000 visitors enjoy a grand (but slightly damp) day out at Cartmel Show.

Despite a slightly damp start, a great day out was enjoyed by one and all at Cartmel Show on 6th August. Around 8,000 visitors showed up in total to experience one of the oldest agricultural shows in the county. Grange WI members entered items in the Village Industries section at Cartmel Show and between them won 10 prizes and 2 special cups. Crowds of people gathered to watch Ulverston father and daughter Ian and Katy Shuttleworth, of Mountbarrow Farm, take the top spot in the heavy horse section with brood mare Mountbarrow Princess. Stick judge Gordon Wilkinson, from Rusland, spent more than an hour inspecting the new stick category which made its first appearance at Cartmel this year, while Naomi Boorman, from Helsington, near Levens, took the supreme championship in the dairy section with David Wright’s Holstein cow in milk.

Tribute concert for former Grange Bank Manager The stunning and extensive gardens at ‘Honeypotts’ were the beautiful setting for a fundraising event on July 15th, in memory of former Grange Bank Manager, David Harding, who sadly died from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2009. Since his untimely death, his wife Sandra has been on the Committee of the Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Support Branch who raise funds to assist people living with this devastating condition. She also works tirelessly to raise awareness of MND, giving presentations at universities, hospitals and hospices to give healthcare professionals a better

understanding of how this disease affects not only the sufferer but also their families. The Big Band Concert was a joint event put on by Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Support Branch in conjunction with the North Lancashire and South Cumbria branch with proceeds being shared equally. It was very well attended by over 150 people who were entertained by the South Cumbrian Retirement Band (SCRB) made up from experienced brass players, most of whom also belong to other bands in the area. An Ensemble from St Pius X School in Barrow-in-Furness comprising Year Six pupils aged 11 also gave a delightful

short recital in the interval. The children, led by Mr Peter Mills, were thanked individually for their excellent playing and presented with a Certificate from the Motor Neurone Disease Association for their contribution to the event. Refreshments of tea and cream scones were served in the interval. Sandra told Grange Now, “A massive total of £1,563.57 including donations was raised, which will help people living with Motor Neurone Disease. On behalf of both committees I would like to give grateful thanks to all who supported this event and helped on the day, without whom we could not have achieved such a successful outcome.”

Junior PCSOs are on track July 24th saw PCSO Emma Forrester and her Junior PCSOs meeting Simon Shipperd from Network Rail at Bailey Lane Crossing. They were there to discuss safety at these crossings but were also given lots of other interesting facts about the weight of trains and the speeds at which they travel. PCSO Forrester told us they also attended Carnforth Station later that day and received a lot of input from British Transport Police.

On Sunday 27 July, the garden of the Royal Oak pub in Cartmel became the venue for a themed garden party to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice and Cartmel in Bloom.

One of the organisers told Grange Now, “the Cartmel community came together to raise much needed funds while having fun in the sun. Music was provided by ‘Smooth Chalk’ while anyone could join DJ Windy and The Cotton Town Swing Dancers for a 30s and 40s dance in the marquee.”



 

With dancing, games, a raffle, a treasure hunt and lots of great food on offer, there was certainly something for everyone. The management and staff of the Royal Oak, as well as many of the guests, were in period costume with inspiration from Dad’s Army being obvious. First prize for best costume went to horticulturalist and landscape designer Sarah Byrne. Karen Lyons, owner of The Kings Arms and The Royal Oak pubs in Cartmel commented, “this is what village life should be about and we are very happy to be able to put this kind of event together. Clearly, both residents and visitors appreciate the opportunity to relax, socialise and have fun.” The event raised £1,000 to be split between both charities.

Give it some welly… The Donkey Sanctuary at Leeds cares for over 20 donkeys which have been neglected, mistreated or in some cases subjected to horrific cruelty. Most of the donkeys which are now cared for at the sanctuary are used to provide therapy for disabled children and adults. Have Your Say North West Coast Connections Public Consultation – 4 September to 28 November 2014 National Grid’s North West Coast Connections Project is about connecting Moorside, the proposed new nuclear power station that will be built near Sellafield in West Cumbria, into the existing electricity network.

Tim’s Column I was flattered to learn the other day that I have been named a “Campaign Champion” by the cycling charity Sustrans. Of course it is great to have the work we do to keep the roads safe recognised but the key benefit to this should be that I can work together with other MPs and members of the House of Lords to get more funding for cycling and other healthy forms of transport. For Grange and the Cartmel Peninsula this really could not come at a better time as Sustrans are just piloting their cycle route from Walney to Glasson (the Bay Cycle Way) which will pass through Grange and Cartmel. I really am sure that this is entirely coincidental. Anyway we know from experience that opening a major cycle route, as Sustrans plan this one to be, can bring a lot of new tourism business along with it, so the Bay Cycle Way will be great news and I will use my new responsibility to ensure that it is a success. Sustrans are planning a test ride on the weekend of the 13th and 14th September so if you see any cyclists coming through Grange at that point please do cheer them along. I think that they are planning to finish up in Grange on the 13th after walking down to Humphrey Head in the afternoon and set off from there on the 14th. Thanks to everyone who came along to meet up with us as we travelled through the Grange area as part of my

annual Summer Tour. As I wrote last month this tour is a really important part of my year and one that I look forward to a lot. What determines whether it is a success or not is how many people come along to say “hello” so thanks again to all of you who did. If you missed our visit I am back in Grange for a surgery at Victoria Hall on Thursday 30th September between 4pm and 5pm. No need to make an appointment just turn up and discuss with me anything where you feel that I can help. Finally as I mentioned last month the National Grid are starting to consult on their plans for the new power lines between the West Coast of Cumbria and Heysham. They have now announced that you will be able to express your views from the 4th September for 12 weeks. If you go to www. northwestcoastconnections.com you can find out more about the scheme. The National Grid is also running a series of road shows about their plans. They are coming to Cartmel on the 20th September (for some strange reason they don’t seem to have any plans to visit Grange). Please do go along and have a look at what they are proposing, this will be a very big investment in our part of the world and we need to ensure that we get as much benefit from it as we can. Mayor’s Report

Things haven’t been quite so busy on the Mayoral front this month which is a good thing since I have been rather busy working with Councillor Joanna Greenway to complete a project to enhance the façade of the Lido with huge photographs of Grange past and present. I would like to take this opportunity to give her a massive ‘Thank you’ for the sterling work she put in to make the project possible, as well as thanking the various sponsors from the local community and Claire from Grange Town Council who all helped make the whole thing achievable. Of course, without the wonderful photographs from Sue, Nick and Grange Photographic Society we would have been a bit stuck, so a huge thank you goes to them too. The Lido does look a lot better and is attracting very positive attention both from passers-by and the media. In fact the project is proving so popular that we are contemplating Phase 2, so if you would be interested in sponsoring a panel or sharing a larger panel please get in touch with myself or Claire at the Victoria Hall. I did brave the weather to attend the annual Dales and Lakes Historic Vehicle Day and was very impressed with the range and calibre of the entries. I was even more impressed with the number of people who turned out both as

competitors and visitors on what was really not a pleasant Sunday. You really are a hardy lot round here! This month there is no Full Council Meeting, though the office continues to be busy. As Mayor it is traditional to lead a number of events to raise money for charity. The first of these will be a Concert on October 17th at the Victoria Hall staring various local performers. Please make a note in your diary to attend – details will be forthcoming nearer the date. And moving on to November 29th there will be a Mayor’s Christmas Fair where local groups and charities are invited to apply for a stall, free of charge. If you are interested please contact Sally Haines at the Victoria Hall. Stalls are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. This would be an ideal pre-Christmas fundraiser with the opportunity to sell festive foods and gifts. I hope lots of you will be joining me in what I hope will be a fun and very worthwhile event. Society Round-up Grange Soroptimists Club members enjoyed an outing to Dunham Massey to see the WW1 hospital reconstruction and enjoyed the house and gardens. On July 29th the club held a Sound of Music Singalong, and the Victoria Hall was full of people of all ages, with a selection of costumes varying from “A brown paper package tied up with string” to an outfit featuring “My favourite things”! There were also Austrian peasant outfits, lederhosen and a nun! Some enthusiastic singing added to the atmosphere and a good evening was had by all. David Huggett did a professional job once again being the projectionist, after his debut last year with Mamma Mia. £600 was raised for the BIG project (Birthing in the Gambia) working with Maternal Child Advocacy International. The club is getting organised for their 60th Charter Celebrations the weekend of 10th -12th October which will include a dinner and the unveiling of the Town Crest on 12th October. Grange Mothers’ Union A very busy morning followed by a slightly quieter afternoon was the order of the day at the Mothers’ Union Open Day held on Saturday 12th July at St Paul’s Parish Rooms. Local people and visitors alike enjoyed their visit, judging by the comments in our visitors’ book and thought that we were friendly, welcoming and interesting! They enjoyed browsing our stalls, hearing what we do here and abroad and refreshments. As a result 3 new members are expected at our September meeting on the 4th at 2pm in the meeting room at St Paul’s Church, (our meetings are monthly on the first Thursday), when we will be holding an AFIA (Away From It All) Beetle Drive and listening to a chat to be given by Judy Redhead, who is our Mothers’ Union AFIA representative, followed by tea. Our October meeting will be Harvest Themed, our November meeting will be a “Fairtrade” Pass the Parcel and Talk and our December meeting will be Carols, Mince pies and Christmas fun. Grange Probus Club On August 11th, Robert Wheatley gave a talk on the development of Barrow in Furness with particular reference to the part played by James Ramsden. In the early 19th century Barrow was just a small village and it was the discovery of high quality iron ore in the area which prompted the beginning of the town’s growth. The rapid development of mining lead to the construction of the Furness Railway to transport the ore to Barrow. Later Ramsden and the other men involved decided to build a steel works in Barrow rather than carry on shipping the ore away from the town. Eventually the production of steel lead to the ship building industry which we still have today.

PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome. Coffee Club In July we were delighted to welcome back Rachel and Lindsay Flintoff who told us of their experiences after working for 25 years in Thailand. Rachel, who came from a spiritually dark village in Malaysia told us how God had led her through many different experiences to marry Lindsay and then join him, first in literature work then in church planting in north-west Thailand close to the Burmese border. We learnt much about this beautiful ‘Land of the Free’ where so many are enslaved by huge debts and spiritual depression. Thailand, known until 1939 as Siam, is famous for Siamese cats, conjoined twins, Thai boxing, orchids, elephants, and a much revered constitutional monarchy. Their church base is at Sam Ngao, a centre for 46 villages. Church life is busy with regular fellowship cell groups and involvement in community

life. People are very open to hearing the Christian gospel and teaching English is much in demand as, if Thailand joins the AEC (Asian Economic Community), people should have a knowledge of basic English. Coffee Club meet again at Abbot Hall at 10am for coffee on September 23rd before we will learn ‘What the Gideons are doing today’. Everyone welcome.

Newton and Field Broughton WI The display of preserves, baking and vegetables from members of Newton and Field Broughton WI looked very tempting at their stall at Cartmel Show on 6th August. The hard work of members who contributed to the stall was rewarded by a healthy financial return to club funds. The September meeting will be a talk on Sandscale Haws by Neil Forbes, the National Trust warden at the Reserve.

Members are urged not to arrive at Lindale Village Hall before 7.25pm on Monday 10th as the hall will be occupied by another group until 7.15pm and it is expected that the car park will be full.

Allithwaite Playing Fields Everyone welcome to join us on Wednesday 10th September at our Afternoon Tea Dance/Social with Live Music 2pm-4.30pm, Admission £4 including afternoon tea, a raffle will be held. Cartmel and District Flower Club At our August meeting, Patti Dawson from Penrith, filled the stage with arrangements of every shape and size. She used wicker containers to illustrate her title “Variations on a Theme”. Colourful vibrant flowers such as gladioli and sunflowers were put together with beautiful foliage from her garden to make up a wonderful display. On Monday 15th September we welcome Pat Crichton from Egremont. Her demonstration will be called “Wait and See”. We look forward to it with enthusiasm. The meeting is held in Cartmel Village Hall and begins at 2pm. Plenty of parking.

Grange Lecture Society Two well known TV personalities are among the speakers assembled by Grange Lecture Society for its coming season beginning next month. Nicholas Crane, presenter of BBC series Coast, returns on 25th November to give the first Donovan Noble Memorial Lecture, ‘An Evening with Nicholas Crane’, and later in the season broadcaster and author Michael Crick will draw on his experiences as a TV reporter in a talk entitled ‘Pursuing Politicians’, which, as anyone who has seen him knows, is exactly what he does, to confront them with the questions they are reluctant to answer. Other highlights in a varied and attractive programme include wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering talking about ‘The Red Wolves of Ethiopia’, Professor Tom Kirkwood on why we are living longer and leading nature photographer John Beatty’s latest presentation ‘Wild Vision – A Celebration of the Natural World’. All lectures will take place at the Victoria Hall commencing at 7.15pm. There is disabled access to the Hall. Application forms for season tickets may be obtained from Grange Library and the Tourist Information Office. Ticket prices are £20 for the season (representing excellent value at £2 per lecture) or £4 at the door for individual lectures.

Mothers and others After a very successful year in our new venue, Grange Fell Golf Club, we will be starting our new session on Tuesday September 9th. Our first meeting, which begins at 7.30pm, will be a short beetle drive and presentation of charity cheques followed by a Jacobs Join Supper. We have a varied programme arranged including speakers, demonstrations and outings. We welcome members old and new. Why not come along, make some new friends and enjoy a sociable evening. The course is looking in excellent condition benefiting from the recent weather as the results from the latest competition’s show, we played for the Coronation Trophy on Sunday 27th July which was won by Andy Coyles with 42pts, his third trophy this year his handicap has been readjusted accordingly. We then held our President’s Day on Sunday 3rd August played in wet conditions Mike Hudson was the winner with a 62 net. Second was Bob Gregory with a 63 net, Brian Cowperthwaite had the Best Gross with a 71, Best Lady was Carol Campbell 76net. Thursday 7th we held a Men’s Open. Winners were Ray Dunford and Gerald Benson with 49 pts, Second was Robert Moore and Derek Airey with 47 pts. Carlsberg singles was played on 17th August in windy conditions winner was Alan Paisley with 68 net.

Grange Fell Golf Club – Ladies Section To date, we are still managing to play and keep dry, in spite of the not so sunny weather! Medals 5 and 6 were won by Ronnie Hall and Ellie Woodburn respectively. The Alan Waters mixed competition was won by Vice Captain Les

Ollerton and Carol Campbell, the latter also winning the Edna Hartland stableford and the President’s Cup (ladies). Pam Chamberlain was a worthy winner of the Eva Watmough Cup. We sincerely hope that the sunny weather makes a welcome return soon!

Grange over Sands NSPCC On Saturday afternoon, 16th August, an event was held, in the United Reformed Church, entitled “Tea at the Palace”. NSPCC supporters thoroughly enjoyed this successful and social afternoon that had been suggested and organised by Margaret Northcott and Joyce Church with the aid of the NSPCC Grange over Sands Committee. Although the Queen herself had been invited she was unable to come but did send a letter from Buckingham Palace wishing the event went well. However, Rita Laisby did arrive in the guise of the Queen with her two trusty attendants and was given a patriotic welcome!! During the afternoon we enjoyed musical entertainment provided by Victor Hindle, Sue Harrison and Sylvia Trohear. We are most grateful to them all for their hard work in providing such a pleasant afternoon. The competitions that we held were “Guess the Dog and Bone name”, won by Cath Canning; “Best Dressed” won by Angela Nottingham; and “Best Hat” won by Maureen Barratt. Our sincere thanks go to all the NSPCC supporters who attended and helped raise £750 in total. Next year we shall be looking forward to a similar event entitled “Afternoon Tea in the Highlands” on 15th August 2015. On Friday 4th September at 7.00pm Joan Bentley BEM will be giving a flower demonstration entitled “Autumn Tints” in Allithwaite Community Hall. Grange WI Some of the Grange WI members entered items in the Village Industries section at Cartmel Show and between them won 10 prizes and 2 special cups. We hope to do well at the County Show on 11 September. Members recently had a very practical session with some First Aid training from members of the Red Cross. On 25 September we will be learning a bit more about the life of a Registrar when Sue Oliver comes to talk to us. New members are welcome to join us – 7.30 pm in the Meeting Room at St Paul’s Church. Grange Ramblers On 6th August, nine ramblers set off from Little Crag CP in Littledale in fine weather to enjoy a popular circular walk up to Clougha Pike. After admiring the panoramic views and a short lunch break, the route continued along the ridge onto Grit Fell before returning back to the start. On 20th August 16 walkers met at the Dudden Bridge iron furnace on a bright cool trip up through Stanley Wood along narrow paths with splashes of sunlight, passing Ash House then to the old road, some took the stepping stone route past Beck Farm meeting up with the remainder who took the road via Broadgate, a coffee break was taken in warm and sunny field , picking ripe sweet blackberries as we went along the road and farm track, Lunch at the Kirk Stone Circle with the views of the ancient builders past. Passing Swinside farm then around the edge of Lath Rigg and the quarried out cave to the edge of Barrow, the last stop with great views over Duddon Sands and mountains further north, all members enjoyed the sunny 6.5 miles circular walk. Lower Holker Village Hall There will be a Treasure Trail around Cark village on Sunday 14th September, leaving Lower Holker Village Hall at 2 pm. The trail has been devised by Mr John Coward, and will entail a pleasureable couple of hours strolling around the village discovering its treasures, hidden or otherwise. Come along, you may find out something surprizing about the beautiful village you live in. The cost of this, to include light refreshments at the hall afterwards is £3.00. Don’t get lost! Our next very popular Quiz Night will take place on Thursday 25th September at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, so come along and have fun testing your memory. Up to 4 members in a team - £1.00 per member. Grange Art Society Our first meeting this autumn is an evening meeting on Friday 5th September from 7pm 9pm at St Charles Catholic Church hall, at the back of the church. Arts & Music On preview evening, the prize draw raised over £250 in aid of Macmillan Nurses in memory of members the Society has recently lost to cancer. The prize, won by a lady in Grange, was a beautiful watercolour painting of bluebell woods, by the renowned artist Terry Harrison, who donated his picture after demonstrating his watercolour techniques at the AGM in April.

Cartmel Art Society annual exhibition On 11th August, the village hall was full to capacity for the preview evening of the annual Cartmel Art Society Exhibition. This popular exhibition proved very successful with over 60 pictures sold during the week. Many compliments were made about the presentation of the event, the floral displays and of ‘the warm welcoming atmosphere.’

Stars of the future

Allithwaite and Cartmel WI have come together to organise a Concert in aid of ‘JIGSAW’ the Children’s Hospice in Cumbria. Grange Primary School, ‘Young Voices’ will be appearing and there will also be solo performances which will include past and present pupils of Judith Pool, aged 6 to 19 years. Grange Drama will be ‘Educating Rita’ Grange Drama’s 2014/15 season opened last month with a play reading of Frank Vickery’s comedy Family Planning. Nicola Quinn, a new member who has recently moved here, shared her knowledge of characterisations and how split stage sets can add another dimension to a play.

Fiona Hancox was presented with the Constance Owen Memorial Plate when her painting, “Red Deer” was voted the favourite for that evening. During the week Ron Moore’s pastel painting “Looking North over Wastwater”(pictured) raised £399. A gentleman from Bowness was the winner of this raffle. Ron donated his painting to raise funds for his chosen charity, The Bendrigg Trust, Old Hutton which provides activities for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults.

Following the retirement of the society’s long standing producer and the relocation of their musical director, the society are pleased to announce that a new producer and musical director have been appointed and together with their resident accompanist they are ready for the challenge of getting ready for the 2015 show, The King and I. Paragon are holding a fashion show of their Autumn/Winter collection on Friday 12th September at 7pm in aid of the URC Hall. Male voice choir

The K Shoes Male Voice Choir are back, with Conductor Ian Allan, and are making their annual visit to Grange. They will perform on September 17th at the United Reformed Church on Kents Bank Road. The soloist is David Edmonds, a very accomplished flautist, who has Grange connections. The concert, which has been taking place annually for a number of years, commences at 8pm and admission, on the door, is £6. Would you like to be part of a new Choir?

St. John’s Church, Flookburgh currently has an existing small core group of singers but they are keen to welcome more members and start a new choir. You don’t need to live in Flookburgh, just have a desire to sing. Everyone is invited to join, whether you’re young, old, male, female, bass or treble. The group intend to practice, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 7-8pm, with organ accompaniment and a skilled leader. Tea and coffee will be provided afterwards. Grange Cinema has been set up in a room at the Keg and Kitchen pub on Main Street. Tracy told Grange Now, “We’ve got a big screen and a sound system to give a real cinema feel, plus comfortable seating for up to 30 people. Over the next 4 months we are working with ‘Cine North’ to bring film to rural areas.” The first film is: Mandela, long walk to freedom, which will be shown on Friday 19th September at 7pm. New exhibition of oil paintings at the Beach Hut Gallery Artist Laura Pendlebury has walked over Hampsfell with her dog, almost every day for the past year. Her exhibition of oil paintings, ‘Heaven is a Hill’, can now be viewed at the Beach Hut Gallery. Her paintings explore some of what she has seen and felt during her walks. The exhibition is supported by a wide variety of work from the other artists who run the Beach Hut Gallery at Kents Bank Station. If you haven’t been before this wonderful little gallery is well worth a visit. Open Thursday to Sunday 11am - 5pm.

Community Choir has a successful first year

Prom Art’s final event of the Summer season will be on Grange Promenade on Sunday 28 September from 10 am to 4pm.

Over 40 people joined the newly formed, Bay Community Singers, giving the choir a very successful first year. Along with conductor, Jane Thedham, and accompanist, Emma Kerr, they have sung a range of songs and have enjoyed performing at the Christmas Tree Festival, the United Reformed Church in aid of St Mary’s Hospice and also at the Edwardian Music Hall. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings 7 - 9pm in the United Reformed Church Hall on Kents Bank Road. Seldom Seen - Mapping Morecambe Bay

Mapping Morecambe Bay is an exciting artist-led programme. Morecambe Bay Partnership are working with Barrow-based Art Gene, to map hidden assets and find out about the stories of local people that draw out the fascinating social, natural and industrial histories of the Bay. These will be captured in four new maps, the Seldom Seen map series, covering: Furness Peninsula; Cartmel Peninsula; Arnside, Silverdale and area; Morecambe, Heysham and area. They’re looking for people to join them as we map the social, natural and industrial history of these communities around the bay. You can get involved in our roadshow by bringing your photos,

artefacts, memories and stories to share with our other guests, participants and volunteers. The Seldom Seen Roadshow is free and the next one takes place on 27th September at Cartmel Racecourse between 11am - 4pm. Methodist Church Circuit, made their farewells to the Rev. Joe Daley, Minister of Grange Methodist Church, Mrs Daley and their family. From September 2014, a new Methodist minister will be joining the South Lakes Methodist Circuit Reverend Jo Rand will take responsibility for Grange and Cartmel Methodist churches.

She will have moved to Grange with her family during August. The welcome service for the

family will be held on Saturday 6th September at Grange Methodist Church.

Well, there is little to report. Everyone seems to be on holiday. The Men’s Group, The Ladies’ Group, the Sunday Lunch and the Prayer Group are all on hold during August.

Prayer for healing has been part of the Church’s ministry since the disciples were sent out in pairs to preach the Good News. During the past 100 years, prayer for healing has been re-discovered by churches of all denominations and the Laying on of Hands for Healing was introduced as a regular part of the main morning service at St Paul’s several years ago. It is offered every three months on the second Sunday of the month and the next Laying on of Hands will take place during the 11 am service on Sunday 14th September when two appointed representatives will be available in the Lady Chapel during the Eucharist for those who wish to come forward to receive this ministry in a confidential

The NSPCC gave a marvellous afternoon’s entertainment at the URC Hall. Lovely sandwiches and cakes together with some good singing, hat and dress displays. Your Red Squirrels need you!

Squirrel activity is at its height in the spring and summer months. The squirrels – reds and greys - are busy breeding, feeding and beginning to expand their territory. The Westmorland Red Squirrel Society’s volunteers and contractors are equally busy. We’re trapping and despatching greys - more than 1100 so far this year – which is essential if we’re to prevent the spread of the squirrel pox virus that is lethal to reds and reduce the damage that greys do to our woodland trees and bird populations. We’re busy recording red sightings too, including more in the grounds and woodlands of Holker Hall this summer and across the Kent Estuary in Arnside and Silverdale. We’re also attending many of the local shows. This spreads the word about red squirrel conservation and offers visitors and

Lindale geological trail ‘The place is a geologist’s paradise. You can actually see the fault, where the earth moved, by the church’. Allithwaite Upper Community Plan 2008. The story of the rocks below Lindale, which determine much of the character of the village, is revealed in the latest addition to the Lindale Heritage Walks leaflets (still available from Grange Now). Based on mapping by the Westmorland Geological Society, sponsored by Cumbria GeoConservation and printed by the Field Studies Council, this leaflet will be of interest to students at Castle Head Field Centre and members of Grange U3A, and to anyone who has wondered how the rocks around Lindale have formed. Written and designed by the same team of Sylvia Woodhead and John Shippen, the leaflet is a lavishly coloured A3 fold out with a geological map, explanations and many photos showing the geological features to be seen on this walk around Lindale.

Swifts in the community The Grange Natural History Society Swift monitoring team has pinpointed 29 buildings in the town where Swifts have nested this year. Most just had one pair of Swifts but some had multiple nests. At least 54 nests were occupied in Grange and we think that many successfully fledged young. The top “Des. Res. locally” is Cumbria Grand who hosted ten pairs of Swifts and I hope that visitors to the hotel enjoying the balmy evenings in July appreciated the exciting spectacle of screaming high-speed swift fly-pasts around the flag tower. If you take the time to look a little closer at moths you will find they are just as colourful and varied as butterflies. I tend to see them as just night Butterflies. They drink nectar and sap and you get to really appreciate them when they are resting during the day as you can get very close. I was walking out of the station and found an impressive Poplar hawk moth recently. However over the years I have noticed more wild flowers popping up here and the phosphate levels are lower now and it is hoped the seed will take and extend the wildflower meadow. Beech “de-limbing”. Maths success at Cartmel Priory

CPS hosted its third Primary Maths Master Class in July

Fourteen students attended the course from the local Primary Schools of Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Grange and Leven Valley. The students completed a workshop which focused on developing problem solving skills and collaborative group work. A variety of puzzles were attempted from getting the red car out of a traffic jam, balancing all 24 penguins at once on the (very) unstable iceberg, to completing magic squares with numbers, colours and symbols. Well done to Ben, Max, Jacob, Rebecca, Douglas, Tate, Eloise, Isabelle, Benjamin, Owen, Joshua, Gabe, Sam and Cailtin for mastering a variety of tricky problems.

Junior Maths Challenge Success

Following the great success of our students in the UKMT Intermediate Maths challenge earlier this year, our students have again proved strong mathematical ability, this time, at the ‘junior’ level. Selected students from both Year 7 and Year 8 sat the national maths competition in May and between them achieved 1 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze certificates. Over 240,000 students from across the UK sat the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. Well done to all 19 students who took part: Joe R, Henry M, Lydia D, Oliver C, Maddy D, Rachel C, Charlotte M, Felix F, Scott C, Jessica M, William K, Oliver T, Lucas O, Louis C, Adam P, Olivia D, Philippa B, Will W and Toby C. Lindale CE Primary School We are looking forward to the new school year at Lindale. We welcome Miss Natacha Bland to our staff. Miss Bland is covering Mrs Law’s maternity leave. Our Reception and Year 1 class has had a ‘makeover’ over the holidays providing enhanced provision both inside and

It was incredible how, in just three weeks, the school had managed to put together such an amazing show complete with acting, singing and dancing! Looking back, the summer term ended with a celebration of the year and especially of our leaving Year 6 group. We were so proud of the confident and caring young people that they have become. After a day of sightseeing including visiting No 10 Downing Street, they spent the night having a ‘sleep-over’

We live in a world where, for thousands of years, man has rampaged destructively upon the earth - a world dominated by the bad stuff about being humans - money and status. power and greed, aggression and egotism, corruption. This has led to a pile up of major problems for the human race. We need to live in a world dominated by the good stuff about being humans e.g. peace, wisdom, integrity, beauty.

I can see a way forward to begin to make this happen. If this town was to become the birthplace of this idea, then there could be considerable economic and cultural benefits. At 78, I wonder whether this is an idea too far. You decide! Please come to an informal meeting for a brief explanation of the idea followed by a discussion. Dear Editor A huge, ‘Thank you and Congratulations’ to two local young people, Glen Giffney, pianist, and Grace Heap, singer, for providing us with the most wonderful concert on Friday August 1st.

The concert was entitled, ‘From Bach to Bond’, and that is exactly what they treated us to, a selection of varied treats from the old composers to the more modern pieces of theatrical world. These two very talented young people entertained us with such professionalism and charm, with all the moss and tempo changes.

Victoria Hall was a full house, a superb accolade to this local, harmonious twosome, who performed beautifully and blessed us with the joy of music in all its various forms.

The quality of their music delivery is ‘spot on’ with their dedication and enthusiasm to their art, being totally evident. Both Glen and Grace have been developing their musical skills and talents since they were about 4 years old, within the Grange area.

However, Glen and Grace are now moving on, in separate directions, to study music to further their careers but ‘a little bird’ has reassured me that they hope to be performing together again occasionally, in the not too distant future. Wonderful news. So dear Glen and Grace, thank you again, for a splendid concert and we wish you all the very best in your exciting musical careers.
