Grange School have received the International School Award from the British Council, Cumbria in Bloom awards by the sackful have been won by both Cartmel and Grange, our local high achieving 94 year old has completed a sky dive and the threatened 532 bus service has won a reprieve.
Life doesn’t always run smoothly but it’s great to be able to report so much positive news. As the song goes, this is an edition of Grange Now which aims to ‘accentuate the positive….’ Thank you and a big well done to the staff of Grange Now who work incredibly hard to bring you this paper each month. Gold for Grange
All their hard work paid off when Grange won Gold at the Cumbria in Bloom Awards, for the third year running. Grange also won the Jennings Trophy for ‘Best Small Town.’ In the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’ the Promenade Gardening Group were judged ‘level 5 Outstanding,’ and the Veterans’ Garden ‘level 3 Developing.’ Grange Primary School and Grange Pre-School groups both entered the schools award and were both judged to be ‘level 4 Thriving.’ Thornleigh Hotel were thrilled to be given a gold award and were runners up to Lakeside Hotel in the Hotels category and head gardener at Cartmel Grange Care Home was rewarded for all his hard work with a Runners up award in the Residential home category. The volunteers, whose hard work ensures that the area wins these awards, should be immensely proud of their achievements.
The Bloom Group told Grange Now that they would like to thank, “all the volunteers and the town council who work hard to make Grange so special. The judges are always amazed at the number of different groups of volunteers who help in Grange. A special thanks to the litter pickers who make the town spic and span. It is also very encouraging to see more and more shops putting up hanging baskets and tubs, it makes such a difference.” The Grange in Bloom judges toured the town during the very hot spell. Marks were awarded for impact and quality of planting, and quality of maintenance, so as the Bloom Group advised prior to judging, “ weeding, watering and feeding are essential to keep displays looking good in the hot weather.” The standard of displays was good and the certificates will be delivered personally by the Bloom Group to award winners. A full list of award winners will be displayed at the Grange Now office.
A boot full of trophies for Cartmel
Gill Bates and Percy Unsworth with trophies On what turned out to be a fantastic night for the peninsula, Cartmel came away from Carlisle with two ‘Gold’ awards, amongst many other trophies. Gill Bates and Percy Unsworth, representing the Cartmel In Bloom Group at the awards ceremony on the 13th of September, had to get up an impressive nine times to pick up awards for Cartmel’s entry. Apart from Gold in the ‘Best Small Village’ and ‘Best Overall Village’, Cartmel won ‘Community Champion Award’, the ‘Tidy (small) Village’, ‘Best Sustainable Development’ and ‘Best In Borough’ (for South Lakeland) trophies. Three of Cartmel’s four Pubs The Kings Arms, The Royal Oak and The Cavendish Arms were joint runners-up in the Continental Landscapes Trophy ‘Special Category’. There were also three awards for It’s Your Neighbourhood projects with the River Eea Walkway and Wild Flower Scheme winning ‘Outstanding’ and

The Village Borders and the Townend Border winning ‘Thriving’. Cartmel also won ‘The Growing For Gold’ award, marking 50 years of the RHS Britain In Bloom, for the special scheme adorning the Village Institute, and other buildings In Devonshire Square. In the ‘School Gardening Certificates’ category Cartmel’s two schools won ‘Thriving’. Judges, Jean Airey and Lesley Winter commented: “There was nothing more that could have been achieved in the overall impression which was excellent with litter free and weed free, swept streets and cobbled areas. All of which was testament to the wide community commitment to ensure that the streetscape matched this picturesque village.” David Crabtree, Chairman of the Cartmel In Bloom Group, told Grange Now: “All the trophies won this year are testament to the hard work of the volunteers, Cartmel’s businesses, South Lakeland District and Parish Councils, the wider community participation and the guidance of horticulturalist Sarah Byrne”.
The Allithwaite Boys A World War One centenary commemoration of those from the village who died, their stories, and the impact of the war on their families, and the wider community will take place on 4th November. St. Mary’s church in Allithwaite has been working with local history society researchers to find out more about those men named on the village war memorial. Researchers have learnt how young villagers left the Allithwaite parish and served both on the battlefields of France and Belgium, and also farther afield. Some died on the battlefields, one was shot down from an early RFC plane, and an officer died from his wounds back in the UK. All the stories are of devastating losses to families and friends but also of courage and service. Living relatives have also been able to add memories and

photographs to the stories.These fascinating stories will be told at a special presentation evening, in St.Mary’s church in Allithwaite, on Tuesday 4 November at 6.30pm. School children will also share what they have learnt about the events remembered in this centenary year of the beginning of World War One.
Information and photographs, as well as the children’s work, will be displayed in the church until Remembrance Sunday and a special service will be held that day. Opening times are on the church website: www.allithwaitechurch.org.uk. All are welcome to attend these events.
Major changes to Vehicle Road Tax There are going to be major changes to Vehicle Road Tax as from 1st October this year. The paper disc which is displayed on the windscreen will no longer be issued. DVLA have said that the computer record is enough for police to know that a vehicle is on the road legally. Another major change is that the tax disc will no longer be transferrable with the vehicle if you sell it. The new buyer will have to tax the car themselves and the seller will receive a refund for any full calendar months remaining on the disc - part months are not refundable.
South Lakes Citizens Advice Bureau informed Grange Now of the changes and they would also like to point out that, when you a buy a vehicle you will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle, using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) by phone 0300-790-6801 or online: www.gov.uk Another major change is the ability, from 1st November 2014, to pay your Vehicle Road Tax monthly.
This is certainly good news for those who dislike having to pay out a large sum of money all at once but please be aware that there is a 5% surcharge for paying this way. South Lakes CAB explained, “For as long as an MOT remains valid, the payments will continue automatically until you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank, or tell DVLA to stop taking them, or a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has been made. Apply online using the details above and your unique reference number given on your DVLA reminder sent in the post. The major change is the ability to pay monthly but the existing annual and biennial options are still in place. There’s no surcharge for an annual license, but an an admin charge of 5% will be added to the other payment options.” If this all sounds very confusing, you will still be able to sort out your vehicle tax at the post office.
There we sat in the Grange Now office, mid September… When in popped the smiling face of Clifford Dadson. We were delighted to report earlier in the year, how Clifford had earned a university degree, graduating at the grand old age of 94. He now came in to the Grange Now office to confess to a slightly nervous feeling, in advance of the planned parachute jump to take place at Flookburgh on Saturday. The plan was for Clifford to take part in a tandem skydive from 13,500ft, to raise money for the national children’s charity Action for Children.
Grange Now was there to capture the moment our intrepid local resident prepared to board the plane. He duly took off and some time later was to be seen floating back down to earth, with the aid of a parachute and a co-pilot. Happily, all went well and Clifford made his landing safely after an ‘incredible experience’
Cliff said: “I was a little nervous going up in the plane and I did actually question what was I doing. But as soon as we stepped out of the plane it was an incredible experience to see where I live so high up.” “I decided to fundraise for Action for Children as I have no grandchildren of my own and I think they (A.F.C.) do a great job; I’ve been supporting them for about 30 years.
Many congratulations to Clifford. Not quite a world record (the world record for skydiving is held by Brazilian Aida Mendes, aged 103) but a fabulous achievement. A degree, a skydive…. whatever next?

A potted history Avid readers of Grange Now will be well aware of the Booths saga. But for those not in the know we have provided a run down on the supermarket chain’s protracted plans to move into Grange.
The early years In 2001 plans for a Booths store at Berners Close were announced, to the dismay of many local traders. An Action Group formed and 4,500 signatures collected on a petition against the build. Grange Now published the results of a questionnaire designed to gauge public opinion and reported an overwhelming ‘no’ to Booths. Many were concerned about the impact on small businesses and a lack of suitable infrastructure to support the influx of shoppers and delivery vehicles. Graham Booth, a director and family member of the supermarket chain, sought to smooth relations: “We aren’t
after the business that goes to a small shop; no one wants to be seen as antismall shop.” Reports on the impact of Booths in another small town, Kirkby Lonsdale, gave conflicting results. While some residents claimed an improvement in parking provision, alleviated drainage problems and small shops mostly continuing to thrive, Grange Action Group described Kirkby Lonsdale as “a ghost town” with “an overall sense of gloom”. The debate raged and Keep Our Grange Special stickers appeared in shop windows and on cars around Grange (allegedly, these were sometimes spotted in out-of-town supermarket car parks).
The findings of SLDC’s Retail Impact Study in November 2003 appeared to rubber stamp Booths’ plans to move onto the Berners site. The Council identified an “unnaceptably low” local retention rate for convenience expenditure, with most local shoppers going further afield for their bulk food shopping. It was decided that “the benefits of a new small supermarket in Grange far outweigh any potential shortcomings”. However the Council were keen to point out that the plans could only go ahead if accessibility was improved, including reducing town centre congestion and improving the promenade. A small mention was given to the potential benefits of a land sale receipt to the 3Ps ‘Time & Tide’ project (which sought to renovate the old pool and promenade). As ever, money is a good motivator. Yet, when bigger funding pots for the local project appeared elsewhere, the financial benefits of a supermarket move paled in comparison and SLDC put Booths on hold. Small traders breathed a sigh of relief, but not for long…
Fast forward to September 2008 Booths unveiled plans for a new store on the Bateman’s Toyota site. During a two-day exhibition the chain promised to ensure the building was in keeping with Grange’s Edwardian architecture and to use local producers as much as possible. Residents raised concerns about underlying drainage problems and traffic congestion. In response Booths proposed to combine their
car park with the existing Council lot on Windermere Road, moving the roundabout to ease traffic flow, and re-routing the free Ulverston shoppers’ bus to connect with outlying villages. Booths finally received planning permission to build a store on the Bateman’s Toyota site in 2009, which was set to move next to its existing BMW and Mini garages at Kendal Road, Lindale. The Lake District National Park Authority rejected the plans at the time due to the Lindale site’s Greenfield status. But whispers that a move by the dealership would fit in with the Local Development Framework cast doubt on the finality of LDNP’s decision. In the interim, Booths bided their time, requesting a covenant from SLDC on the Windermere Road car park for 25 years.
In early 2012, all was still quiet on the supermarket front... The three year expiry date for building at the Bateman’s site passed without activity, leading Booths to apply for an extension to the planning application timeframe. Grange Town Councillors requested a rethink on permission for the chain to move into Grange citing “material changes” to the town over the previous 3 years, including the economic downturn, collapse of the Berners Vision initiative (creating an alternative available site), and the potential for 500 new homes to be built in Grange (outlined in SLDC’s land allocations document) creating further traffic congestion.

Britain and Ireland have the highest levels of death duties in the developed world, raising almost £3 billion for the UK government, yet with careful planning, done as early as possible, a significant proportion of this could be reduced.
The nil rate band currently stands at £325,000, and will remain at this level until 2019, therefore as asset values increase HM Revenue & Customs will become one of the main beneficiaries to a greater number of estates. For married couples or civil partnerships, any unused nil rate band can be passed onto a surviving spouse, meaning that the amount of an estate that remains free of IHT could be up to £650,000. The nil rate band may seem very generous, however, once you add up the value of all your assets (savings, investments, property etc.) and also factor in future asset value increases the figure may well exceed the nil rate band, in which case your estate will be landed with a tax bill of 40% of the excess. You also need to consider significant gifts made from your estate within 7 years of death as they will also
be included when valuing your estate. Consider how much tax you have paid throughout your life whilst building your wealth, from income tax to value added tax (VAT), to then pay a further 40% on death on a proportion of this is far from ideal. IHT planning can be very complex, however, there are many ways to reduce any future liability, perhaps even to nil, leaving more of your estate to your loved ones and less to HM Revenue and Customs. It is important to remember that IHT is not related to age; if you think you have an IHT issue, or you are very likely to have one in the future, the earlier you start to put plans in place will determine the level of tax you could save your chosen beneficiaries. A challenger appears: On April 14th 2014 Grange Now asked Booths for their take on the new supermarket store expected to move into the British Legion on Kents Bank Road. Following more than ten years of repeated attempts to gain a foothold in the town they have been pipped to the post by Tesco. They were guarded in their response: “Booths feel it’s not their place to comment on the proposed Tesco store…Booths stance on local sourcing is well publicised and we’re very much looking forward to opening our new store in 2016.” Artist’s impression of how the new store might look. The summer of 2013: a spanner in the works Bateman’s Toyota was sold to Harrogate-based Meridian Motor Group and will trade as Vantage Toyota. Bateman’s had finally received permission to relocate to land next to their BMW garage, however, the BMW dealership was to remain with Bateman’s and Vantage would not move in next door. A September 2013 press release from Booths stated: “Advanced talks to acquire a suitable facility to relocate the Toyota business are currently taking place. Booths have a contract to acquire the site and have scheduled the demolition of the existing buildings and construction of the new Booths store with a view to opening in summer 2016.” Graham Booth, property director for the chain, said: “We have had to wait a long time to secure this site but this has only increased our enthusiasm to
deliver to the residents of Grange and surrounding area the very best of what Booths have to offer in our most up to date format.”
Councillor Tom Harvey of Grange Town Council commented: “Ultimately this is now a private business decision between Booths and Vantage Toyota. Depending on your viewpoint, for better or worse Booths have permission to build their supermarket and it’s up to them to sort out the availability of the site. They have until early 2015 to start before their permission expires and, should they not meet that, they would have to re-apply in full for planning permission. Booths appear confident that they will be starting soon and it’s important that, if they do, we ensure that they carry out all the work required to prevent and indeed improve the flooding issues in that area.”
On May 9th 2014 Tesco confirm that they plan to open a Tesco Express on the former British Legion site. They announced in May that they hope to open their doors before the end of 2014.
September 17th 2014 Grange now asked a representative for Booths if they could give local residents an indication of when they hope to start work on the new store and they have responded: “once we are in a position to give proposed timeframes we’ll be in touch.” Booths have submitted an Alcohol Licence application and the artist’s impression shows how the new store might look. So, we are sadly not yet in a position to confirm the exact situation. Booths continue to state their intention to open and certainly the application for an alcohol licence suggests real intent. Booths have also seen this article and have approved use of the image, so watch this space.

Grange has often been described as, ‘God’s waiting room’ or a ‘retirement village,’ and that may have been the case in years gone by but is it still relevant today? The Cartmel peninsula offers fabulous walking and could well be the Cumbrian hot spot for cycling with quiet lanes and beautiful countryside, combined with a handy local train service. Time for a change of reputation perhaps. In a recent article, the Lancaster Guardian states: “Over the years Grange has picked up a bit of a reputation as being a place where people retire to and so tends to close about six o’clock in the evening. It needs to rebrand itself as a great centre for walking. The Cistercian Way a 24-
mile trail starts in Grange, while the 75 mile Furness Way passes close to the village.” Grange Now office sees a constant flow of walkers passing by the office armed with poles, boots and rucksacks, enjoying no doubt the many routes on offer. Take Hampsfell which although just 220 metres in height offers a wonderful 3 mile circuit over a couple of hours and provides a stunning outlook in every direction. Lindale, just up the road have a fabulous range of very well researched walking guides covering the local area (copies available in Grange Now office) while Cartmel and Bigland offer beautiful paths through open countryside. Take for example, the circular walk leaving from Cartmel’s
racecourse. Climb steadily through woodland and over pastures to Speel Bank, on beside deciduous Collkield Wood, below Mount Barnard, and along the Cistercian Way to Cartmel. The Cistercian Way is an ancient waymarked trail of middle distance which traverses the low limestone fells that fringe the shores of Morecambe Bay, and the sands of the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas. The trail takes about two to three days to complete. The trail, which passes through some superb scenery, begins at Grange and continues for 33 miles, passing through Cartmel. For those who prefer two wheels the Walney to Wear cycle path stretches coast to coast climbing Bigland Hill and passing the front door of Grange Now office.
Having completed the route last year, I know it’s a route that almost anyone can enjoy over 3 or 4 days. The brand new 100 mile Morecambe Bay cycle way, from Walney to Glasson Dock, will officially launch next year and is aimed at families who want to explore the area and move along at their own pace. The Morecambe Bay Partnership have recently submitted an application to fund a feasibility study into creating an Arnside to Grange walk, and cycleway across the viaduct. There are numerous routes on offer to both cyclist and walker that combine well with the local train service and providing handy access to Arnside, Silverdale and Ulverston. With so much on offer on foot or by bike, from beaches to hill tops and a growing reputation for food and accommodation, maybe it’s time for the Cartmel Peninsula to reinvent itself.
Consultation for a neighbourhood plan Grange Town Council and South Lakeland District Council have asked Grange Now to let our readers know about a consultation for a neighbourhood plan.The following piece has been written by Grange Town Council. Residents are being asked for their views on a move by Grange-overSands Town Council to have more input on developments in its parish. The Town Council has applied to South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) for the designation of a Neighbourhood Area covering the parish of Grange-over-Sands. This would give Grange Town Council the power to make a neighbourhood development plan, make neighbourhood development orders and make Community Right to Build orders. • A neighbourhood plan can establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood, such as the location and appearance of new buildings and may identify sites for new development • Neighbourhood development orders allow communities to effectively
grant planning permission for certain types of development • A Community Right to Build order gives permission for small-scale, site-specific developments by a community group Parishes with a neighbourhood plan will receive 25% of any Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) arising from developments in the area (once the CIL is in place). This is compared to 15% for those that do not have a Neighbourhood Plan. If adopted, CIL will be charged on new developments over a certain size and the money raised is put towards providing the necessary local infrastructure to support them. SLDC launched a consultation on the application on Thursday (28 August 2014) and is inviting people to make their views known on the proposal by letter, email or online. The consultation period runs until Thursday, October 9, 2014. The application is being publicised via www.southlakeland.gov.uk , the local press and parish notice boards. SLDC offices in Kendal, as well as at Grange-over-Sands library.

Last month we reported on the proposed bus cuts and it seems the strength of public opinion, along with intervention from MP, Tim Farron, seems to have caused a fantastic turnaround. As you will read in Tim’s column, Travellers Choice, who operate the 532 service have decided not to withdraw the service that goes from Lindale, through Grange and on ultimately to Ravenstown through Cartmel and Flookburgh. A spokesman for Stagecoach told Grange Now: “As a consequence of Cumbria County Council’s decision to withdraw funding for subsidised bus services, Stagecoach reviewed evening passenger numbers and it was clear that too few people used the X6 bus between Ulverston and Kendal in order to justify a bus and driver all evening. However rather than run nothing at all during the evening between Ulverston and Kendal, Stagecoach will run one return journey at the most popular times. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, only the senior club, 11 years upwards, has restarted following the Summer break.

regular bank emptying. It is planned to change the card banks at the affected sites from 15th September, with changes at can banks from 26th September and changes to plastic banks from 29th September. The changes will affect a number of the schools that have card/paper banks for their own use,

Marine sightings making a splash in the Irish Sea

Wildlife Trusts across the North West have said the recent warm weather may be responsible for a flurry of exciting wildlife sightings in the Irish Sea. Since the beginning of this month alone, at least two ocean sunfish - usually found along Britain’s south coast – have been spotted, along with both common and bottlenose dolphins and a very rare leatherback turtle. Last year saw the designation of two areas within the Irish Sea as Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) dubbed ‘the nature reserves of the sea’ along with 25 other areas around the UK’s coast, providing some muchneed protection for our marine life.
Emily Baxter, Marine Conservation Officer with the North West Wildlife Trusts said: “It’s been a fantastic few weeks for wildlife in the Irish Sea, with sightings of some iconic creatures like the leatherback turtle and ocean sunfish. Sightings of these illusive animals only occur every few years with it often down to being in the right place, at the right time and with good conditions! “The recent warm weather and high jellyfish numbers could be bringing some of these larger species which prey on the jellyfish into our Irish Sea.
“Although not gelativores like turtles and sunfish, even bottlenose dolphins have been making the most of the abundance of jellyfish bottlenose dolphins have even been observed playing volleyball with the jellyfish in the water!” The leatherback turtle is the largest marine turtle and the biggest living reptile after
members of the crocodile family. Leatherback turtles can reach up to 900 kg in weight and 6 or 7 feet in length down their back or ‘carapace’, with front flippers several feet long.
One of the most wide-ranging of the turtles, leatherbacks have been seen as far north as Alaska and Norway and south to Africa and Indonesia. They arrive in the UK in August and September from their tropical breeding groups, following jellyfish blooms. Ocean sunfish are the other heavyweight visitors, weighing in at up to a tonne, although most often seen by their ‘waving’, ungainly fins that splash on the surface of the water.
Another likely visitor at this time of year is the basking shark – not to be confused with its meateating cousins – which move along with plankton blooms, scooping up thousands of these tiny creatures within their cavernous mouths. Emily Baxter added: “From the distinctive floating dinner plate-like sunfish or the playful dolphins that have been seen recently, it seems we could be in for an exciting end to the summer.
“We’re only at the very beginning of securing the future for our Living Seas through a strong network of MCZs, so we’d love anyone who has any sightings or especially photographs of what they’ve seen in the Irish Sea this summer to share them with us at the Wildlife Trusts.”
This time of year is great for fungi, and Brown Robin has a good range of different species. Brown Robin specialises in one particular one particular kind of fungi; the waxcap (Hygrocybe spp). We have a waxcap grassland on the reserve and it is of national importance with over 20 species in one grassland area, mainly due to the aspect of the grassland and that it has not been fertilized or ploughed. Waxcap fungi come in a range of bright colours and are usually shiny. They only live in unimproved grassland with poor nutrients. One special waxcap in particular is the Ballerina waxcap, nationally rare but locally common, it is bright rosy pink and is a Biodiversity Action Plan species. This means it is of conservation concern due to its rarity and is therefore protected. As its cap opens up, the edges split and turn up like a ballerina’s tutu, hence the name. Please do not pick fungi! We shall be starting the coppicing again soon, as well as other needed work, and help is always welcome and you can learn more about Brown Robin by getting involved. Bay Search and Rescue donation aids training
The Santander Foundation, which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities, have donated £5,000 to Bay Search and Rescue. The money will be used
to fund Flood Rescue training in Cumbria and Lancashire. The grant will enable more of Bay Search and Rescue’s team to be trained to respond during local flooding incidents and also across the whole of the UK in times of major flooding. Training Officer, Mike Davis told Grange Now: “One of our biggest costs is on-going training and updating the team’s skills so they can

Over 35,000 people attend Westmorland County Show
Thursday September 11th dawned bright and sunny, and stayed that way all day long. A record breaking 35,227 people attended the Country’s largest one day agricultural event which has been voted by Farmers Guardian readers as, the 5th top show in the Country.

A decade of beauty treatments
Now celebrating their ten year anniversary, Emma from the Treatment Rooms explained how she, and one therapist, had started with just two rooms. Offering Elemis as their main product, a range of facial and nail treatments were on offer. With a growing reputation the team soon expanded to four therapists. By January 2012 and with a need for more space, the decision was taken to buy the house next door, allowing much needed expansion. Now with a team of nine staff , The Treatment Rooms still offer Elemis but have added the Clarins product range and a wide range of face and body treatments.
A celebrity tattooist visits once a month to provide semi-permanent make-up such as eyeliner and eyebrows and also reconstructive treatments e.g. nipples for breast cancer patients and scar camouflage. Another monthly visit is paid by the nurse who has been with The Treatment Rooms for the whole ten years and provides a botox and fillers clinic.

The sports therapist visits once a week to deal with injuries, sports massage and provide a range of remedial therapies.
Not wishing to stand still, a new service just being launched is the Lynton hair removal system offering pigmentation, acne treatment and thread vein removal.
Emma would like to thank all her loyal clients, especially as some regulars travel from as far as Preston and Sedbergh for regular fortnightly treatments. She also wishes to say a big thank you to Kathryn Evans who she has worked with for the whole ten years, and to the entire Treatment Rooms team who do a fabulous job. I didn’t know that… Community Right to Bid. People can use the, Community Right to Bid, to ‘pause’ the sale of buildings or land that they care about. This can include a local shop, the library, your local pub or even a football ground.
You can use this ‘right’ to gain time in order to get the community together to develop a bid to buy whatever it is you care about. You will find all sorts of useful information on their website http:// mycommunityrights.org.uk including the following: “It is important to nominate land and buildings to be part of a register of ‘assets of community value’. If something on this register is offered for sale, you then have up to six months to prepare a bid.” The website has many links with advice and help and there is also a link to find out if you are eligible to apply for a grant.
The Community Right to Bid covers public assets but also private ones. There is a wealth of interesting information on the website including the following:
“Local authorities are required to keep a list of all of these ‘assets of community value’. If an owner of a listed asset wants to sell it they have to notify the local authority. The local authority then, in turn, has to notify any interested parties. If community groups are interested in buying an asset they can use the Community Right to Bid to ‘pause’ the sale, giving them 6 months to prepare a bid to buy it before the asset can be sold.
The Community Right to Bid came into effect on 21 September 2012 and over 3,500 people have used the right to date (April 2014). You can see some examples on the Community Rights Pinterest board.”

When was the last time you looked in your attic?
Ellen Butcher contacted Grange Now as she would like to thank the ‘unknown’ good samaritan who helped her disabled brother, Bernard, when he fell on the Cartmel Road on Sunday September 14th.
The young lady who came to Bernard’s rescue, called an ambulance and then stayed with him until it arrived. She then took the papers Bernard was holding, and delivered them to his house. Ellen doesn’t know who the lady is but she would like to offer her heartfelt thanks.
She would also like to thank her neighbours, Alan and Jo, who on hearing of the accident also went to the scene They too waited for the ambulance so they could tell Ellen which hospital Bernard has been taken to.
Ellen said, “I’m overwhelmed by the kindness of these three people and I wanted to tell them so”. She would also like everyone to know that Bernard is fine.
Thank you to Higginsons I left my debit card in Higginsons Butchers and a member of staff kindly handed it in to the bank for me. I don’t know who it was but I’m extremely grateful and would like to say thank you.

The future of Tricketts Field still not decided
GADAG has updated Grange Now on the current situation regarding the controversial planning application at Tricketts Field. Pete Nightingale of GADAG told us, “This planning application for Tricketts Field went before South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) Planning Committee on 28th August in unusual circumstances. Recent legislation decrees that minor applications must be determined within 8 weeks, and major applications like this within 13 weeks (halved from 26). Because of its complexities, the SLDC Planning Office were unable to fully clarify with the developers a whole raft of matters relating to surface water drainage, site access, and others. However, the developers maintained that this was not the case, because they had submitted revisions which were not determined within the original 13 week timescale; whereas the Planning Office felt that the changes were sufficiently
major to warrant a completely new application. Consequently, the developers opted to take the matter, on appeal, to the Planning Inspectorate. This short-circuited the whole application; and the Planning Committee were obliged to make an arcane judgement on how they would have voted in June, had it been heard then. Therefore, in August the Committee voted unanimously that in June they would have voted to refuse the application. The date for the Planning Inspector’s hearing has yet to be decided; it will be open to submissions. The Planning Inspector may or may not take the view that the developers have a ‘case’, and so the whole application remains undetermined.”

Holker Chilli Fest is hot favourite
Holker Hall added the Chilli Fest to their calendar of events this year and they are delighted to report that it was a huge success. Jillian Rouse, Visitor Services, told Grange Now, “the event certainly offered our visitors a completely different experience. It was a fun and lively weekend with some fantastic food and entertainment.” Exhibitors travelled from as far as Scotland and Southampton, offering all things chilli-related. Jillian added, “We were pleased
to welcome Tony Ainsworth, better known in the chill world as Darth Naga, who presided over the chilli eating competition.”
The event was very popular and saw 4,500 visitors through the gate. Following its success, the dates have already been confirmed for 2015 as the 12th and 13th September.

Mayor’s Report Although there is no Full Council Meeting in August, life here at the Council by no means grinds to a halt. This is true too of the Mayor and Consort. Jackie and I have attended a number of events and for each of them the weather has been fantastic. The first was attending, in an official capacity, the end of August PromArt where we met the exhibitors as well as having a very good look at the amazing selection of art and crafts on display. I did succumb a couple of times and went home carrying my own Christmas present from my husband! Later the same day we attended a lovely garden party organised by the Chamber of Trade to raise funds for the Mayor’s charities. I came away with a goodly sum to put in the fund, having enjoyed a
delightful afternoon in the beautiful Hampsfell House Hotel gardens. The company and the tea were pretty good too. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ for their efforts. My next official engagement was as a judge for the PromArt 10th Anniversary competition. This was very different from what I am usually asked to do but was very interesting and a great honour. We, that is myself and two other much more illustrious judges, had twenty five entries to look at and decide six shortlisted items and an overall winner. Not an easy task by any means as the standard was very high and the range of crafts and skills used extremely wide. We did come to a unanimous conclusion without coming to blows and the results will be announced at the PromArt AGM on September 28th. My final wearing of the chain this month was at the last Music in the

The Flower Stop started out as freelance business 18 months ago and then Carol, and husband Leo decided to open a shop so people could see and choose their flowers. Carol told Grange Now: “I have a passion for working with flowers; I love the colours and the texture and I enjoy creating beautiful bouquets which can be adorned with accessories to compliment the arrangement”.
Park concert for this season. It seems only days since I opened the season and there I was saying a final thank you to all those who do so much to ensure the concerts are such a success. May I repeat those thank you messages to Charity and Co who organise it all on the day including putting out the chairs and supplying a seemingly never-ending supply of ices, tea and cake, to the Park Road gardeners who ensure we have such a beautiful venue to visit, to Victor Hindle who introduces the bands and takes the bucket round (a very important task!) as well as, I discovered, cleaning the portaloos each week and of course a huge thank you must go to our audiences without whom the whole thing would be a lot less fun! I am also engaged in helping to organise a Charity Concert on Friday October 17th, 7:30 at the Victoria Hall where we will be
showcasing a variety of homegrown talent. I hope to see you there. The September Full council meeting was certainly full – I did not get home until 10:45pm! One of the many discussions was concerning how we might run Councillor Surgeries in the future. The previous regimen seems to work for some but we realise many people are unable to attend so Councillor Greenway and myself are investigating a different way of doing things where come to you by attending meetings or events in different parts of the town, as well as continuing some Surgeries at the Victoria hall. As soon as details are forthcoming we will share them with you. Masonic Lodge refurbishment
We are now a small but thriving Lodge with about fifty members. We have a full programme of ceremonies and lectures which is supported by an equally enthusiastic social programme. We regularly hold quiz nights, treasure hunts, carol concerts and other social events. A highlight of the social programme is the annual Ladies Evening held on the Saturday after the third Friday in November. We welcome visiting Masons to our meetings who can be assured of a warm welcome and hospitality at our Festive Board. Non masons and friends are welcome to attend our
social events. Arthur John Brogden Lodge No. 1715 meets at the Masonic Hall, Hampsfell Road, Grange-overSands at 7.15 p.m. on the 2nd Friday of each month from September
to June inclusive.
We have now completed a refurbishment of the Lodge and it is available for hire.

Bogus callers are now ringing people and pretending to be calling from the Call Preference Service. Cumbria Trading Standards are warning people to be cautious when taking telephone calls from callers purporting to be from the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), the organisation which helps to limit the amount of cold calls received by telephone. The bogus caller falsely claims that they are from the TPS and asks for personal details including bank card details. The TPS would never make such a request, and people are once again
being reminded never to give such personal details to cold callers over the telephone.

Tim’s Column It’s a bit of a travel focused report this month.
Firstly, I am really pleased that Traveller’s Choice have responded to pressure and decided not to withdraw the 532 service that goes from Lindale, through Grange and on ultimately to Ravenstown through Cartmel and Flookburgh. This was covered in the last edition of Grange Now and I too was contacted by a number of people living out at the end of the route who were very worried that losing the service would leave them isolated, relying on friends and relatives to provide them with lifts into Grange. As a result we wrote to Travellers Choice asking them to reconsider their decision and I was really pleased to receive the email letting me know they had. It is very easy to forget how important rural buses are to some people if we are lucky enough to own and car and be able to drive. For some particularly the elderly or young people who have not been able to afford the exorbitant costs of learning to drive and getting insured for a car a bus like the 532 is the only way they can travel around. Losing services like that effectively drives them away from rural areas, forcing them to move into towns. If we are to keep the mix of people that we have in our villages we need to fight to keep the buses that are needed. I am continually having
County Matters
As everyone is aware the result in the Scottish Referendum has raised the issue of more power being devolved to local areas in England.
I am very much in agreement with this but we also need to look at the same time in having a single tier local authority here in Cumbria. This would enable us to save a large amount of funding in order to protect our front line services. With added resources and power from the centre we could promote our area and provide more jobs for our community. The local 532 bus service will still be running but with a slightly reduced service Monday to Friday. Unfortunately the Saturday service will be greatly reduced. This is due to the Lib-Lab Councillors on the County Council voting to cut all bus subsidies at the budget
to battle with bus companies to keep vital routes open across South Lakeland. I only wish we were always as successful as we have been here. The other transport issue is the Furness Line. I have written here in the past about my belief that this needs to be electrified so it can work with the rest of the rail network more easily allowing trains to go from Barrow to a whole range of destinations. This is something that will become increasingly difficult as more and more of the North West becomes electrified. In August we received a report from an independent consultancy looking at the state of the line. Their conclusion was that not only did it need to be electrified but that it really was not even fit for purpose now. The timetabling does not tie in with when people need the trains to run and there is simply not enough capacity on many of the trains. This is before the Glaxo expansion in Ulverston which will lead to a large expansion of employment there and without trains the only way for people to travel there will be by car. I have sent the report to the Speaker of the House of Commons and asked him to allow us to have a debate on it in Westminster Hall. If we are granted permission this will be a great opportunity to discuss all of the issues involved. Society Round-up Grange and District Photographic Society Our new season starts this month in the United Reformed Church Hall, Kents Bank Road at 7.30pm. On Monday October 20th Steve Shepherd will hold a Members Challenge evening. The subjects will be ‘Jumble’ and ‘Quaint’ – a test of your imagination and interpretation of the subjects.

Grange Probus Club On September 8th, John Murray gave an illustrated talk entitled Titanic. He began by saying that there would be little mention of icebergs as his talk was about the construction of the ship and the local families involved. The family behind the building of the ship were from Whitehaven and many senior members of the crew were from Cumbrian coastal towns and even as far inland as Tebay. He described the rivalry between the White Star Line and Cunard and the desire to build bigger and faster ships. The Titanic had two steam reciprocating engines and a turbine engine which drove a central screw situated behind the rudder thus giving it extra speed. John described how new docks had to be constructed and larger cranes built in order to construct such a large vessel. He completed his talk by answering the question, why was the order given to turn starboard when the iceberg was on the starboard bow? His answer was that mariners were
still using orders that went back to the days of steering by tillers. To turn to port the tiller had to be put to starboard. The use of this outdated nomenclature led to the fatal disaster.
PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch This month we welcomed Gerry Hickson who had come to help us find inspiration for our embroidery all around us. She promoted the use of sketchbooks, not just for drawings but photographs, magazine pictures, other artists’ work, notes and collage; anything which would promote a creative idea. We were able to look through her own sketch books and look at the way ideas had developed from them.

We were then set an exercise where we collaged paper and then filled in with oil crayons being careful with our choice of colours. We then cut up the collage and discussed how we could use the pieces.
In the afternoon we made a whole series of collages based on a photograph we had brought. We were then shown how these could be used as a starter for abstract embroidery. Thanks go to Gerry for a very interesting day. The next meeting is

Townswomen’s Guild As the ‘Summer Tea’ in August had to be cancelled because of illness, members were happy to be together again. Our September meeting had both members and visitors. We heard Zelma Hallatt tell us of travelling disasters that produced lasting friendships. A board went round for the Members 68th Birthday Lunch at Hampsfell House Hotel. This will be on Thursday October 23rd. A board also went round for the Carol Service at Liverpool Cathedral on Friday December 12th. A coach is to be organised by Ulverston TG, picking up at the station about 9am. We look forward to hearing a popular speaker, Paul Hughes of Grange Bakery, on October 9th - and perhaps sharing some samples! Grange WI Our creative members won 23 awards at the County Show. Amongst them were 13 golds so we are really pleased and can’t wait for our October meeting when we will see all the entries on display. We hope to have a photo of our prize-winners for the next edition. At our last meeting we had a very moving talk by Chris Wilcock of WaterAid. In the UK we all take clean water and sanitation for granted but in many African countries this is not the case. Chris described how WaterAid had helped people in Ugandan towns and villages and improved the lives of women in particular – no more trekking miles to fetch water each day. On 23 October we will be holding our AGM and then hearing about legal planning work from Kelly Walsh.
Witherslack WI September saw Witherslack celebrating its 90th Anniversary with a party. Special guests Ruth Rigg and Eileen Kirby joined with members from the Lyth Valley Group to enjoy a sumptuous meal. Afterwards the excellent all female singing group “Otto Voce” entertained us with well known songs which were much enjoyed. The large and beautiful celebratory cake was made and iced by Pauline Hodgson. Material from the Kendal Archives was on show and was of great interest, with photos and minutes of meetings from the 1920s onwards. The more recent scrap books were also on view. A short business meeting preceded the party. The walk round Staveley with Andy Lowe and visit to Holehird and Rydal Hall had been very successful. Newton and Field Broughton WI Several members of Newton and Field Broughton WI and invited guests enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea hosted by a member and her husband in their lovely garden in Lindale. A raffle raised money which was donated to the First Responders .
The meeting in September was an illustrated talk on Sandscale Hows by the warden, Neil Forbes. He gave an interesting insight into the formation of the sand dunes there and then went on to describe the wild life in the area. This included the plants and amphibians, butterflies and fungi etc. The Hows are particularly well known for their natterjack toads as well as other rare species. The maintenance of Sandscale Hows depends largely on the of volunteers. The October meeting will be the Annual General Meeting when members will be asked to vote for the committee. Supper will be provided at the meeting but members are reminded to take their own plate and cutlery. The date is October 8th and the start will be at the slightly later time of 7.40pm.
Mothers and Others On September 9th Mothers and Others started their new session in Grange Fell Golf with a Beetle Drive and a Jacobs Join supper. The Beetle Drive was won by Margaret Tyson. We were joined by Lynn Shamal and Stephanie Sexton from Paddlers for Life which is a UK charity for cancer survivors, particularly breast cancer. Members of the charity paddle splendid Dragon Boats on Windermere and take part in events all over the world. The physical activity and team support foster the wellbeing
of those with experience of cancer. Our Chairman Joan Tyler presented them with a cheque for £100 which was some of the money raised at the Edwardian Fair.

Grange over Sands Golf Club All the main competitions have now been held as we go into the Autumn and Winter seasons. The knock-out trophies have all been played for and the winners known. We need any members with trophies at home to bring them back to the club as soon as possible for engraving ready for the presentations. The ladies prize giving and lunch are on Thursday, 20th November, the Mens’ Trophy Presentation is on Saturday, 1st November following a Texas Scramble. There are some Winter Opens coming up soon which can be booked in the Pro shop or in the office. There are some social events throughout the Autumn and Winter so please keep a check of these forthcoming events including the ever popular Quiz nights. Anyone wanting to come and join our Membership should contact the office (33180 Option 3) where we could offer some good rates for the rest of the year.
Cartmel and District Flower Club At our September meeting, Pat Crichton from Egremont entertained us to a wonderful afternoon. While she was working she told us a little about her life as a farmer’s wife come demonstrator come tractor driver. She had an interesting way of bartering lamb chops for flowers from friends and neighbours. Many of the flowers she used were grown in her turnip field. She got inspiration for her finished arrangements from various objects

GRANGE OVER SANDS NSPCC On Friday 4th September Joan Bentley BEM gave a flower demonstration entitled “Autumn Tints” in Allithwaite Community Hall. Everyone always enjoys Joan’s wit and professionalism with her flower arrangements. This year £430 was raised by the supporters of the NSPCC and we should like to thank all those who attended, with particular thanks to Joan, who helped to achieve this amount which all goes to our local NSPCC.
Another event for anyone who is concerned about the welfare of children will be a musical afternoon on Saturday, 18th October, 3.00 – 5.00 pm, in the United Reformed Church. This will be in aid of the NSPCC and a new charity called “Jigsaw” which looks after the only children’s hospice in Cumbria and is based in Carlisle. This event will be free but donations would be welcome. We have received a very generous donation of £250 from family and friends in memory of their loved one who died recently. We do appreciate this kind gesture. If you are interested in the NSPCC and would like to know more about this national organisation and our local input, the South Cumbria area of the NSPCC will be holding their AGM plus a talk on the work of the NSPCC on Monday, 20th October, at 7.00 pm in the Grange Hotel.
Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society The September lecture, ‘Monasteries and their influence in North Lancashire and South Cumbria’, was given by Dr Alan Crosby, a recognised expert in the field. He explained that by the 13th century many monasteries had become very wealthy and were becoming remote from local people. In contrast, the monasteries and priories in Lancashire and Cumbria had strong links to the local community. Most of the monks were from the local population and had local names.
At the time of the Reformation, the monks and priors were relatively young suggesting the establishments were still recruiting from the local population. The monks and priors in the local houses also seem to have led a relatively parsimonious life, in contrast to those elsewhere. The establishments were also important to the local economy, providing both direct and indirect employment. The enquiry into the establishments prior to the dissolution showed relatively few misdemeanours’ by the local monks and strong charitable giving to the local communities. Together, these factors engendered support from the local population. An excellent,
informative and entertaining lecture enjoyed by a large audience.

Members of Grange Soroptimist International were delighted to hand over £1500 to the Alzheimer’s Association to be used to run a Pilot ‘Singing for the Brain’ group in the Grange area. The sessions are hoping to commence on Thursday October 16th in the Allithwaite Community Centre. 10.30 – 12.30. Our Craft Fair will take place on Saturday 1st November, and is fully booked. This is a very successful annual event, and we have a wide selection of stalls, some new and some regular favourites. Eat at the hall or take home for later. Come along and treat yourself and have an enjoyable day!

Grange Lecture Society Professor Tom Kirkwood, Dean for Ageing at Newcastle University, opens the Society’s new season on 14th October with a lecture of interest to everybody entitled ‘Why and how are we living longer?’ In it he reveals the latest scientific and medical understanding about the increase in life expectancy around the world and discusses its potential consequences. Following this on 28th October Jacqueline Hyman, an expert in textile conservation who on a previous visit gave members a fascinating insight into the kind of work she does, returns to the Society to report on her researches into a long forgotten box of excavated children’s garments and assesses their artistic and historical importance. Her talk is called ‘Buried Textile Treasures: Discoveries from Medieval Egypt’. Both lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

On Tuesday October 9th, a beautiful sunny day, 11 walkers set off from Arnside seafront to walk up Arnside Knott, where the stunning views were admired, walk then went through some delightful woods before past Arnside tower and on to Silverdale. Here a sunny spot overlooking the bay was found to sit and enjoy our lunch, then we followed the shoreline back to Arnside enjoying the ever changing views across the bay. The 8 miles walk was led by Hilary Parker. On 16th September seven walkers travelled by train to Carnforth for a 7 mile circular walk via the canal towpath to Hest Bank, returning along the coast. In warm sunny weather the leisurely stroll followed the towpath before dropping down to the beach at Hest Bank for lunch, return route followed the Lancashire Coastal Way, passing the “Praying Shell” sculpture and stopping for ice cream at the nearby cafe. A welcome cup of tea was enjoyed at the Railway station before the journey home, leader – Alec Bottomley. Details of 7.5 miles Troubeck Valley walk will shown in next issue. Grange Fell Golf Club The course is in excellent condition, benefiting from the recent good spell of weather we are now having. We are getting towards the end of the competition season and here is
a summary of recent competition results:On Sunday 24th August Hindley Hall Trophy was won by Brian Wilkinson with a 62 net, Invitation Day on the 31st was won S D Wilson and his partner with 44pts, Fell Cup was played on 7th September won by Gary Broadhurst with 44 pts,in this competition Andy Coyles had a hole in 1 on the 5th, Veteran’s Trophy was played on the 14th won by Derek Airey with 63net. Winners of the Knock Out competitions were A B Davy Trophy 36 hole Matchplay Mike Garnett beat Brain Cowperthwaite 1 up, George Airey Greensome winners were Bob Gregory and Steve D Wilson beating Daryl Lomas and Mike Hudson 2 up,Harold Perkins Cup winners were Brad Thompson and Steven Hill winning 1 up from Robert Moore and Derek Airey.
Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies Section) As the competition season draws to a close, we can look back on some glorious days of blue sky and sun – indeed at the time of writing the warmth is still here. Medal 8 was won by Pam Chamberlain, while the 9 hole trophy was by Beatrice Hall with Barbara Shepherd as the runner up. The Betty Hamer Trophy was won by Ruth Waring. Pam Chamberlain and Ruth Waring won the Daily Mail Qualifying round.
Wombelles Cancer Support Group We are a small friendly group who have all been affected by cancer. New members are always welcome. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 1.30pm at Cancercare, Lakes Centre, Kendal, (unless we have organised an event). Now that the weather is better, we like to get out and about.

Grange Crystal Investment Club We are a small but well organised club of enthusiasts who enjoy meeting socially at a member’s home monthly to discuss investing in shares and managing the club portfolio. We are one of several thousand investment clubs across this
country. We have been going now for 14 years and have weathered the ups and downs of the stock market with considerable success. Being a member of a club has helped us keep our nerve during the down times. We are registered with Proshare, an organisation dedicated to assisting investment clubs. We buy and sell shares through a specialist broker and we have developed our club portfolio mostly in UK companies, into which we each put £25 monthly. There is a wealth of information about shares now available online and being a member of the club helps sift our way through what otherwise could be somewhat overwhelming. In addition to our monthly meetings we keep contact through emails and circulate articles of interest about investing and shares of interest. We are looking for a new member or two (not independent financial advisors) who would like the opportunity for regular discussions to learn and share their knowledge about shares. Grange Lions Grange Lions had a busy meeting in September to plan several forthcoming events. Plans for our Charter Lunch at the Grange Hotel at the beginning of October were finalised. All of us are looking forward to enjoying a good meal with fellow Lions’ friends and family. A lively discussion took place about our Presentation Night. A social night was planned to present cheques to the several local charities we have collected for over the past year. Also early plans for our annual Flookburgh coffee morning in December were discussed. A donation of £100 for Boxes of Hope was agreed by all attending and this will go towards assisting with the heating and lighting at the Barrow warehouse this Autumn. Grange Lions has also been asked to take part in the Christmas Fair that is being held in the Victoria Hall in aid of the Mayor’s charities and it was decided that a toy stall would be appropriate, as it would be close to Christmas.

Each Slow Dusk

Grand Variety Show raising money for Alzheimers
Des Day, one of Lancashire’s top comedians, has brought together a group of artists to put on a Grand Variety Show at the Victoria Hall here in Grange on Friday 3rd October 2014, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, a society leading the fight against dementia.
Artists include: Brian Sefton, a top class magician; Ron Carey, male vocalist whose repertoire includes songs by Frank Sinatra & Matt Munro; Rachel Mercer, local soprano from Lancaster; Silver Web Academy of Dance & of course Des himself providing the comedy. Ladies Day at Grange Drama An initial audition reading of Amanda Whittington’s comedy, ‘Ladies Day’ will take place on Wednesday 15th October at Grange Institute. The play revolves around horse racing, exciting hats, and someone involved in the play told Grange Now, “Cartmel Races immediately springs to mind”. Grange Youth Theatre’s Summer production of ‘Wizard of Oz’, has raised a massive total of £2,000 for Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. Barbara Brown, volunteer fundraiser for the charity, said on their behalf, “Thank you to the fantastic Grange Youth Theatre, for their most generous donation of £2000. This wonderful group of young people raised this amount at their latest summer production “The Wizard of Oz”. They all work so hard to provide, not only superb entertainment for the local community, but also provide so much supportive care and consideration for so many local charities.” Barbara went on to tell Grange Now a bit more about the charity: “this very special gift will help support the new ‘outreach’ scheme at Jigsaw, enabling more children with life limiting illnesses and their families, to gain access to this wonderful supportive
service within Cumbria. Jigsaw is the only children’s hospice in Cumbria, providing much needed specialist nursing care, ensuring that they live their lives to the full, surrounded by fun, laughter and love.” Jean and Mick Malkin, leaders of the youth group, put a huge amount of time and effort into producing the Summer production and the panto, and these are always a pleasure to watch. The Summer production was also supported by The Elite
School of Dance, Grace Heap and a dazzling array of solo performers.
The next production will be their annual Pantomime. This year it’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and rehearsals are already underway. The Victoria Hall in Grange will again host the shows on Friday 5th December at 7.30pm and matinee performances on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th at 2.30pm. A definite date for the diary.
The Mayor’s Concert promises to be toe tapping fun Tricia Thomas, Civic Mayor, has decided to raise funds for her chosen charities, Diabetes UK and St Mary’s Hospice at Home, by organising a fantastic music concert which will showcase the talents of local singers and musicians. The immensely popular and very gifted musician Glen Giffney will delight us all with a half hour programme of a mix of styles to suit all tastes. Also taking to the stage will be Grange Young Musicians, a highly talented group of youngsters who are aged from as young as 6 to 16. You are sure to enjoy the toe tapping routine from Grange Folk (U3A Music for Pleasure) and Michael Simpson will have everyone clapping and possibly dancing to
his lively repertoire on the keyboard.Ian Wilson will compere proceedings which promises to be an evening of great entertainment. Refreshments will be available and, of course, a raffle. The concert will take place on Friday October 17th at 7.30pm in the Victoria Hall. Tickets will be available
from the Town Information Centre from the beginning of October. The tickets, which are priced very reasonably at £5 for adults and £3 for children, will give not only a great night out but will also raise much needed funds for the Mayor’s worthwhile charities, Diabetes UK and St Mary’s Hospice at Home.

David Gent qualifies with honours David Gent, son of Dr Nick Gent and Dr Diane Ruell has started work as a junior doctor in Manchester after qualifying in medicine, with honours, from Manchester University Medical School.

As the nights draw in, we’ll be baking lots of autumnal favourites such as our Steak & Gravy, and Hot Pot Pies. Making the most of a bumper harvest
David was brought up in Lindale and Grange-overSands and attended Lindale Church of England Primary School and the Lancaster Royal Grammar School.
There are three orchards at Sizergh and this year we have seen a bumper crop of plums, damsons and apples. Given a few hours of sunshine we’re off with step ladders, crates and baskets to pick the ripe fruit and deliver them straight to the farm shop – and to the kitchen where they are transformed into seasonal specials for the tea room. Whether you choose ingredients to take home or you’d rather skip the cooking and get straight to the eating you can be sure of provenance and taste.

Take the latest apple crop to arrive in the farm shop, the Levens James Grieve, which is from an old tree in the village where houses now stand. Local writer and orchard keeper Brian Fereday grafted the tree to root stock to continue the variety. It’s a lovely apple that grows well in our colder, high rainfall area; one that’s just as good for eating as cooking due to its juicy, delicate flavour. Damson cheese:
INGREDIENTS: 2kg damsons (unstoned) Approx. 800g sugar 4 straight-sided glass jars, lightly oiled
METHOD:
Wash the damsons and put them in a large preserving pan with a couple of tablespoons of water. Bring to the boil and bubble away until the flesh is very soft. Let it cool a little and then push through a sieve to remove skins and stones, leaving a fruit puree. Measure the volume of puree in a measuring jug, return it to the (clean) pan, and add 350g sugar for every 500ml puree. Simmer and stir until the mixture turns thick enough to briefly draw a clear line across the bottom of the pan. Pour into the jars and seal.

The North West Connections Consultation has deposited information in the Library about the proposed routes being considered for a link between a new Nuclear Power Station at Sellafield and the National Grid. Options include routes on land, either to the north or to the south of Cumbria or under the Morecambe Bay. The consultation continues until 28th November 2014. Grange Neighbourhood Plan application to South Lakeland District Council is also available to view in the Library and responses to this consultation should be made by 9th October.

SuperReading workshop South Cumbria Dyslexia Association (SCUDA) has organised a one day workshop ‘SuperReading and Marvellous Spelling’ with Dr Ross Cooper and Jenny Morgan. The workshop is suitable, not only for people with dyslexia but anybody who would like to learn how to read faster, as well as increasing their comprehension of a text. Marvellous Spelling is a visual spelling strategy and SuperReading builds on dyslexic strengths of visualisation and holistic approach to learning. Everybody is welcome; teachers,

Church News Grange United Reformed Church September is a month of transition from summer to autumn and our Harvest celebrations are upon us. Also this month has seen an end to summer activities. Both the monthly walks and Traveller’s Tales have seen the last events of the season, both very successful and enjoyable. During the month, we have had two fund-raising functions. One was a new
one for us, when Jill, from Paragon, brought her new autumn fashions for a show which was very interesting and successful. The other was our regular concert by the K Shoes Male Voice Choir. This was a real show-stopper, with the choir in sparkling form under their conductor Ian Allen and with their accompanist Andy Glenville. Flute solos from David Edmonds added an excellent touch of variety to the programme. Thanks to everyone who
contributed to both events. Looking forward into October, the Women’s Guild open their autumn season on Wednesday, 8th October, and they are organising a Coffee Morning on 17th October for charity. However, the most important event in October is the commencement of regular joint services with our Methodist Friends on the 3rd Sunday of each month. We look forward with joy to this development and pray for its success.

St Paul’s, Grange Many members of St Paul’s were in the congregation and in the augmented choir at the wonderfully uplifting service of welcome for the Reverend Jo Rand and her family at the Methodist Church on 6th September. What an exciting, interesting and yet challenging time ahead for the Rev Jo as she starts her Ministry here in Grange with the Growing Together initiative going forward in Cumbria uniting Anglicans, Methodist and United Reformed Church members in working more closely together whilst still keeping their distinctive identities.
We were delighted to see the return of flautist David Edmonds who gave us another of his entertaining lunchtime concerts for the finale of our concert season this year. David gave an outstanding performance comprising both old and new favourite musical pieces and he was ably accompanied by our Director of Music, Charles Edmondson, on piano and organ. The concert, preceded by lunch, raised the amount of £257 for church funds. Following on from the success of the Founding Fathers Bible Study course earlier this year, the next six talks will begin on Thursday 9th October in the Meeting Room from 2.00 – 3.30pm. Entitled Judges in Israel, the course will continue looking at the Old

Grange Methodist Church was packed for a Service of Welcome for their new Minister, Rev Jo Rand on the first Saturday in September. Representatives from surrounding Anglican, United Reformed and Roman Catholic Churches joined friends from the South Lakes Methodist Circuit and the wider Cumbria Methodist District to make Jo and her family feel at home after their move from West Yorkshire. A specially gathered choir from across the Circuit led vibrant hymn singing and sang the anthem, “How lovely are thy dwellings fair by” Johannes Brahms.
Rev Tony Wells, Superintendent of the South Lakes Circuit led the worship and Rev Richard Teal, Chair of the Cumbria Methodist District, preached the sermon on a theme of Ministry. Rev Nick Ash, Vicar of Grange Parish Church, read the County Ecumenical Declaration of Intent under which all Methodist, Anglican and URC churches across Cumbria are bound to work ever more closely

Jo, who is a Probationer Minister, responded to the varied welcomes by saying she looked forward to getting to know the people, their concerns and their dreams and exploring with them where God may be leading them together. As well as the church at Grange, Jo will have pastoral care of the Methodist church in Cartmel. She and her family, husband Paul and children Martha and Amos, soon took the opportunity to get to know folk better as some 130 people joined in a sit-down afternoon tea laid on by the people of the church.

Each year at Harvest time, the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, makes a Harvest for the Hungry appeal to which donations collected at the Harvest Festival are given. This year the Bishop has informed us that the Harvest Appeal will support two projects: The Us community project in the northern Philippines and Christian Aid’s global disaster risk reduction work. The Harvest Festival at St Paul’s will take place on Sunday 5th October at 11.00 am and once again it will be a celebration of all God’s gifts. Please come and join us for this very special service which will be followed by refreshments. The Harvest tea will be served at 4.00 pm in church that afternoon and this will give us an opportunity to review our Living in Grace programme. Afterwards there will be the auction of harvest produce with proceeds going to Us (formerly USPG).
Grange Christmas Tree Festival We promised last month to let you know the theme in this month’s edition, and it will be, ‘Peace and Goodwill to all’. The festival was a big success last year and it raised much needed funds for charity. St Paul’s Church in Grange is once again holding the event in it’s beautiful building. The welcoming reception will take place on Thursday 4th December and everyone is welcome to attend. There will once again be music, song, lights candles and perhaps a glass of festive cheer. Local groups and charities are very welcome to enter a tree and St Paul’s told Grange Now, “last year we had 34 trees and over

St. Charles Church I hope you have all had a pleasant break and rest. An early Indian Summer has certainly been a welcome bonus, especially when you come out of the ‘chilly’ conditions of the Co-op – those poor workers. Well, the sleepy weeks of August are behind us – Parish activities begin to stir. Prayer Group, Ladies and Men’s Groups, Children’s’ Liturgy, Cartmel Education have once again put life into the Father Magner Room. Fathers Taylor and Steel are scheduled for talks on Ministry and Liturgy and an 8 week course “Scripture Life Line” will give everyone an opportunity to learn and grow in faith – then it will be Advent. It was a lively service for Rev Jo Rand as she accepted her position in the Methodist Church. Together with her family, she received a very warm and sincere welcome. May the good Lord bless Jo in her ministry. A short break at Southport was very welcome despite a midnight false fire alarm! Mass and lunch with the Bishop, Priests and Deacons of
the Deanery was a fitting climax to my Golden Jubilee Year. The ‘Fab Four’ ladies provided a lunch of gargantuan epicurean delights – a truly magnificent effort. Many thanks, ladies. Congratulations to Jim and Pat Byrne who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with a very pleasant ‘get together’.

Cartmel Priory School and Beyond Congratulations to the class of 2014.Students performed well and exceeded national statistics in terms of % A*-C in the June exams in both English and maths, as well as a range of other subjects. Nick Turner is a second year Mechanical Design Apprentice with Oxley Developments in Ulverston. The Oxley apprentices recently took part in the Brathay Apprenticeship Challenge and were placed 5th nationally out of over 100 teams. Catherine Shaw achieved a 1st Class Honours Degree in Contemporary Theatre and Performance. Catherine has gone onto work as a Producer/ Programmer for various national organisations. Grange Primary School has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award, in recognition of their efforts to bring the world into the classroom. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools. Their hope is that young people gain a better understanding of different cultures. The school have formed a strong partnership with the school in Sikles, Nepal and reciprocal teacher visits have taken place to enhance the partnership and encourage improved education practice. They have been involved in Fairtrade projects within their local community and also have been supporting women’s groups in Nepal. The children formed a committee which helped to select, sell and promote a range of products from Nepal and have been supported
in their global work by local groups such as Amnesty International, the Lantern Shop in Allithwaite and the local Fairtrade group. Headteacher, Phillipa Summers, said of the award, “I am absolutely delighted for the whole school in receiving the British Council Full Award for International Schools. We will continue to build upon this success by continuing our work as active global citizens and look forward to working on exciting future projects with our partner school in Nepal. “

We’ve had an excellent start to the new term. Our wonderful staff worked hard to prepare school for the new year. We have a new curriculum, new class arrangements and free school meals for infants. The older children spent a day at Westmorland County Show. They were delighted to learn about different breeds of farm animals, old fashioned farm machinery, alpacas, horses, inside the human body and inside an ambulance. Also, it was good to brush up First Aid skills
and practice what we have learnt on Health and Safety Day at our school last year. Flookburgh Nursery have made a fantastic start and warmly welcomed new starters. They have been very busy painting beautiful self-portraits and baking pizzas. We have also met our new Vicar, Robert, who, at the very start, reminded us how
important it is to do our best as individuals. Sharks (years 5 and 6) are looking forward to Priory Day at the end of September and music event in Barrow Cinema in October. We have some exciting after school clubs this term, such as: Loom Band Club with Miss Cannon and Football Club with Mr. Ross; Recorders, Netball and Music Clubs to be formed soon.
Lindale Pre-School Nursery It has been a lively start to the new year at Lindale Pre-School Nursery, with our new young arrivals settling in happily and our older children getting back into the swing of Nursery life.
Our building next to Lindale CE Primary School has had a major facelift over the summer. We have a new shed and picture frames thanks to the generosity of Newfoundland Lodges, who made and donated them. A carport-style roof to one side of the building means that children can now play outside whatever the weather, and the September sunshine has meant we have continued to enjoy the benefits of our garden that
was greatly improved earlier in the summer.
September activities at the Nursery have included self-portraits, which are now pride of place on our new display boards. We have been walking around Lindale to look for signs of autumn, and used hand and foot painting prints to make a great autumnal tree. To help raise funds for even more improvements at the Nursery, we will be hosting our second annual Band Night at the Keg and Kitchen in Grange on Friday 17 October. Jim Bean will be performing, and tickets costing £3 can be bought from Nursery or on the door. All welcome!

Dear Editor With regard to the article on page 3 of Grange Now (September)”No infrastructure as bus routes get cut”, I think that the impact of these cuts should be impressed on SLDC. The Planning Department must be made to review ALL the planning applications which make reference to Grange having “good transport links”, as clearly this will no longer be true. SLDC must also revise their Core Strategy document (South Lakeland Local Development Framework: Core Strategy, adopted October 2010) which uses “good transport links” as part of the justification for classing Grange as a Key Service Centre - and hence the justification for 449 new dwellings. Below is Section 2.10 extracted from this strategy document: 2.10 Along with Kendal and Ulverston, three other places – Milnthorpe, Kirkby Lonsdale and Grange-over-Sands – were identified in the Cumbria and Lake District Structure Plan as Key Service Centres outside the Lake District National Park. The justification for this classification was that the three places had: • Good public transport links to outlying settlements; • A primary school, secondary school, library, doctor’s surgery and a town centre function providing at least a post office and 2,000 sq m of retail floorspace; • A population of more than 1,500. It has now transpired that although there are cuts, they are not as severe as I expected. However, I understand that the service will only continue for as long as Stagecoach consider it is viable, so …. we need to “use it or lose it”. Margaret Carter, Kent’s Bank.

Dear Editor We joined Peninsula Medical Practice as temporary residents in April this year (we are spending the summer in our caravan). We have been amazed at the service we have received. Dear Editor As I take my dogs on a daily walk past the old Berners Close Pool site, I often wonder whatever happened to the glass panels/doors that listed the names of the Founder Members that helped fundraise towards the costs of the new pool. A lot of people donated their own hard earned money and gave up a lot of time and effort to arrange fundraising events. I still have the full list of family names and organisations, as printed on the 26th July 2001 by the Grange Now (issue 119 July 2001). Can someone please tell me that the panels are safe and well, and that they weren’t broken up and scrapped during the demolition work? John Sayle Grange-Over-Sands.

LEGAL TALK Choose carefully when choosing someone to help you administer an estate. Do not be misled when ‘buying’ probate services. It is not as simple as saying you get what you pay for. Sometimes, you pay plenty and get poor service in return. It is difficult for local lawyers to compete with high-street banks, and national Financial Advisers dressed up as experts at Wills and Probate work when really, they are not. They may sneak in by offering bereavement advice via a ‘not for profit’ website or call centre which, if you dig deeper, is funded by a probate or financial services firm. The pink front door leads you into a paid for service when you thought you were getting free assistance. We are open and honest about what we do. Come to see us about your Will, future planning, or the administration of an estate. The first meeting is free and followed up with a letter setting out your circumstances, the help we can offer and a fixed fee. No pressure. Nothing hidden. No need to sign up until you know what you are getting, who is providing the service and how much it costs. If you are approached by a non lawyer to ‘help’ you with the administration of someone’s estate, thinkDo you know who you are dealing with? The ‘consultant’ who comes to see you is probably employed by a third-party company. Do you know who they are? Are they qualified and do they know what they are talking about? Do you trust them? Beware the hard sell. The consultant is generally a salesperson, there to ‘sell’ you the service. They will want the estate papers (including any will) and once you have parted with that, you are in their hands. There can be a lot of pressure to sign up during this meeting. Fixed fees are not always good. It depends on how high they are fixed! Get a quote from a lawyer and don’t believe it if you are told that lawyers are always the most expensive option. And some lawyers are less expensive than others. Keep control. Don’t automatically give Power of Attorney to deal with the estate. It takes away your decision making power. We take Powers of Attorney for this in limited circumstances, say if a client is not up to the stress or work involved or if they are busy with other things and want to hand over control. Just be careful! Choose carefully. You don’t have to sign up immediately. You will have a 7 day cooling-off period but many people are too embarrassed to use this having already said yes. Ask questions about who will be providing the service, and who you will be dealing with on a day to day basis. Always consult an alternative provider, preferably your local solicitor. Allithwaite Primary School
We have had a very exciting start to the year, starting with the Westmorland Show visit for the whole school. The children had a wonderful experience, and this year our theme, for the Learning for Life Tent, was Commonwealth Games. Our Reception children didn’t attend the show but had a fantastic experience at the Old Vicarage with Zoolab, handling snakes, giant snails, cockroaches and many more exciting creatures. We had lots of success with our contributions at the Cartmel and Allithwaite Shows over the summer and at the start of term. We are now looking forward to harvest, where we will be raising funds for our sponsored
child, Angel Sarah, who lives in Ghana. We are hosting a Harvest festival on Monday 6th October at 2:45pm at St Mary’s Church where we will be selling a whole range of cakes on the day.

Additionally, we have some take-up for classes such as Spanish but insufficient for a viable class so if you do wish to learn another language please get in touch. We also continue to offer FREE tuition in GCSE Maths and English, for those wishing to acquire these formal qualifications, maybe to improve their future career prospects. Please note, that taking the final examination and completing coursework for these two courses, is not optional but is integral to us securing funding.
