No bus for hours then two come at once!
(Not the Editor) Letter
In an incredible twist to the bus cuts story, it now appears that we will have not just one operator running the 532 service, but two.
This month we have a jam packed edition and we wish we could include everything that has been sent to us, but it just wasn’t possible. To start on a low note - South Lakeland Mind are in danger of closing. See page 8 for details of an emergency meeting. Another low point is the very real threat of rail cuts which will see the RMT union lobbying parliament on 4th November page 5.
Spoilt for Choice: Stagecoach and Travellers Choice battle it out on Main Street
On a happier note, we have a skydiving mother and son team, Grange Town Council have managed to secure £1.20 all day parking for every Saturday in December including Grange Extravaganza day on the 6th and Sam Mallinson from Allithwaite led Liverpool out onto the pitch - pictures on page 13 (he’s the smiley one). Chris is away, but this month’s edition was brought to you by the amazing team of Glenn, Kerstin and Sharon.

ISSUE 280 DEADLINE 14th NOV
In last month’s edition (October 278) we reported that bus operator, Travellers Choice, who operate the 532 had decided not to withdraw the service that goes from Lindale, through Grange and on ultimately to Ravenstown through Cartmel and Flookburgh. It now transpires that Stagecoach will also provide exactly the same service at exactly the same times. A resident of Grange called into the Grange Now office to tell us, “I was waiting for my usual bus this morning to come into Grange. The driver, Sally, is well liked by everyone using the 532 as she is really friendly and caring of her passengers and other road users. I saw the bus coming and I thought they had given her a new bus but when it stopped it was a male driver. He told me that this was the bus and I should get on. I then noticed another bus coming down the road and so I told the driver no thank you I’ll wait for my usual bus. I couldn’t believe that there were two buses at the same time. I got on my usual bus with Sally”. Grange Now contacted Cumbria County Council and a spokesman told us, “The information you have is correct - both Stagecoach and Travellers Choice have registered
effectively the same service in Grange (albeit there are slight variations on the route in the afternoon). This is not something the council has any control over unfortunately – anyone can register a bus service with the Traffic Commissioner if they believe it to be commercially viable and they meet the necessary criteria. Ideally, there would be variations in the service so that there is more choice for customers, but the second operator who registered the same service (Travellers Choice) have made a commercial decision to compete directly with Stagecoach for passengers. We will have to see whether running two services on this route remains a commercially viable option in the future, if not then presumably one of the operators will de-register their service and we will return to a single operator.”
What remains to be seen is what will happen if, or more likely when, one of the operators pulls out. Will we see a rise in fares and/or a reduction in service? We can’t answer that one yet but it appears that many of the residents of the area are hoping they get to keep ‘Sally’.

One of the important details which was to be announced “at a later date” was how pension funds would be taxed on the death of the pension holder. The fine detail was provided on Monday 29 September and represents another far reaching change. At present, if a pension is held but not yet drawn and the member dies before age 75 then no tax is deducted when the monies are paid out. If the pension is not yet drawn but the member is over 75 then there is a flat rate death tax charge of 55% if the proceeds are paid out as a lump sum. If benefits are being drawn through a method known as “income drawdown” and the member dies then the lump sum is paid out again with a 55% death tax charge regardless of the age of the member. There are some variations to the above rules but these provide a general outline of the current situation. From next April the position is very different. If the member dies before age 75 then the entire proceeds are paid out tax free regardless of whether benefits
have not yet been drawn or are held in income drawdown. If the member is over 75 on death then the beneficiaries can elect to have a flat rate 45% (as opposed to 55%) deducted. Alternatively, whichever beneficiaries inherit the pension can ‘encash’ under the new pension liberation rules. In summary, a vastly improved position. Pensions can be excellent but are, of course, simply a means of generating income in retirement and therefore correct planning may or may not include use of pension plans – it is the overall strategy both in accumulation before retirement and deccumulation beyond retirement that is the key. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Mother and son take to the skies for charity Local mum of three, Angela Sharp, threw herself out of a plane in an effort to raise funds for North West Air Ambulance. Angela’s husband, Garry Sharp, was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in October 2013. Angela told Grange Now, “It’s the first anniversary and I wanted to do something to remember Garry, to raise money for North West Air Ambulance but also to raise awareness of the Think Bike campaign”. North West Air Ambulance attended the accident and Angela said she wanted to give something back. Garry and Angela’s son, Lewi aged 11, told Grange Now, “I’m really proud of Mum,

Preparing for the jump: Angela and son, Luke

Angela and Luke jumped at the Black Knight Airfield at Cockerham, near Garstang, on 11th October. Friends and family turned out in force to support the pair, and following the jump Angela said, “that was absolutely amazing. Garry would have been laughing his socks off if he was here” and to prove she had enjoyed it she ended with, “here I come Cark! (airfield). I’ll definitely be doing that again.”

Who’s stealing the banners? Several vinyl banners have been taken from the railings by Grange Station. The banners, from various groups, range in cost from £70 to £200 and they are being removed immediately after the event has finished. One of the missing banners was for a 3 day art exhibition at St Paul’s Church, Lindale. A spokesperson for the church told Grange Now, “the event was on for 3 days and it finished on Sunday morning (12th October). A representative went down to Grange in the afternoon, as soon as
the exhibition finished, to collect the banner but it had already been taken down”
A spokesperson for Grange Town Council told Grange Now, “You should ask for permission to put a banner up and some have appeared on the railings without permission but the council wouldn’t take them down. We too are mystified as to what has happened to these banners”.
Another group who lost their banner is Grange PreSchool. A spokesperson for the group contacted Grange Now to say how upset they are about their banner, “It was the first time

Unveiling of Grange Town Crest
On Sunday 12th October in glorious sunshine the Grange Town crest stone near the Station was unveiled by Janice Carrick President of Soroptimist International of Grange over Sands.

In September, the Action Plan section was sent to Grange Town Councillors, South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council and ACTion for Communities in Cumbria. Comments have now been received, and the Action Plan will be revised where necessary.
The stone was received on behalf of Grange by Mayor Tricia Thomas. Janice said she was pleased to be able to mark the Club’s 60th anniversary by giving the crest in recognition of the support given to the club by the people of Grange over the last 60 years. Many local businesses, organisations and families contributed to the project and will be recognised on a plaque. A
celebration lunch was attended by Soroptimists and donors at the Victoria Hall.
Taffy Thomas, MBE, delights Allithwaite school children Taffy Thomas, MBE, a patron of the Society for Storytelling brought delight to the pupils of Allithwaite Primary School when he spent the day with them on Monday 13th October. He spent the morning telling his wonderful tales to the younger, Key Stage 1, children and then in the afternoon he took the older children on a walk around the village. Year 5 pupil, Katie Shepherd, told Grange Now, “we walked round the village with Taffy and he told a story about every landmark we came across. My favourite was

Rail, Maritime and Transport workers union crank up the pressure against rail cuts On November 4th, trade unionists from across the Northern and Trans-Pennine Express franchises, along with supporters from the community, will take their case against the franchise plans in a major lobby of parliament. Last month RMT launched a new postcard campaign pointing out to passengers that the shock abolition of a wide range of off-peak fares is a taste of what’s to come under the new Northern and Trans-Pennine Express franchises.
The union has slammed the Government and Northern Rail for secretly colluding to axe off-peak fares, along with jobs and key services, purely in the name of private profit. A resident who recently moved to the area, called into the Grange Now office to tell us that one of the reasons they chose this area was because of the excellent rail links. As you will see from their letter on the letters page, a recent journey on a Northern Rail train left them more than unimpressed. More people need to jump on this particular
bandwagon if we don’t want to be left with an appalling rail service. Another group who are badly affected are parents of 6th form children who have to travel to either Lancaster, Ulverston or Barrow by train. One parent told Grange Now, “Up until last year students aged 16+ starting 6th Form in Ulverston could apply for discounted season tickets on the trains from Arnside, Grange, Kents Bank, Cark etc to Ulverston”, she continued, “this year my son has started 6th form in Ulverston, but

the discounted rates have been withdrawn and fees have now increased by 200% for new students. This makes rail travel unaffordable to us and we are having to drive my son to Ulverston each day”.
Northern Rail receives a substantial subsidy from the taxpayers. It was the recipient of one of the three largest train subsidies in 2012/2013. 16 - 18 year-olds are encouraged to stay on in full-time education, but once again parents are left to foot the bill.
Mark Thomas, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager for the North told Grange Now, “We’re liaising with the local authority on a few remaining details before we’re able to start the process to open our store in earnest.” He continued “In response to feedback from neighbours, we have moved the plant machinery associated with the store to an internal position, helping to much reduce any noise that this would have created. We’re looking forward to providing a secure future for the former British Legion building, creating jobs and offering a great service in Grangeover-Sands.”

Clare House raises over £400 for Macmillan
Morecambe Bay Partnership Launch of the Bay cycle way This year’s Morecambe Bay Partnership conference was held on 2nd October in Barrowin-Furness (many readers may have attended last year’s conference in Grange). Morecambe Bay Partnership is a well established and energetic charitable organisation set up to benefit the Bay’s communities. It is essentially about preservation, sensitive development and promotion.
The conference was well attended with over 100 delegates, several from Grange over Sands, and they heard a range of speakers including members of the MBP
team, and representatives from Cumbria Wildlife Trust and The National Grid. Perhaps the most interesting news for Grange was the detail of future events which will clearly have an impact on the town and surrounding area. These included the ‘Launch of the Bay Cycle Way’ in June 2015; a ‘Festival of Archaeology’ from 11-26 July 2015; ‘Morecambe Bay Heritage Open Days’ between 10-13 September 2015.
The Morecambe Bay Cycleway, a new 200km family-friendly and signed route from Glasson Dock to Walney Island, will pass through Grange and bring more tourism and spin-off benefits
to the town. Cyclists will be encouraged to explore and discover what is en-route and the cycleway will help meet Morecambe Bay Partnership’s ambition of a significant uplift to the local economy. It was pointed out that staying visitors are worth up 4 times day visitors. Hotels and Guest Houses take note! For more information about these events, about the courses they run or about the excellent work of Morecambe Bay Partnership in general, visit www.morecambebay.org.uk or write to Morecambe Bay Partnership, The Factory, Castle Mills, Aynam Road, Kendal, LA9 7DE, tel 01539 734888
This year saw the Read family host their first Macmillan Coffee morning. With such sumptuous surroundings how could it fail to be anything but a great success. Thanks to coffee, cakes, a balloon drive and a fantastic raffle £426 was raised in just 4 hours, and with some balloons still to sell the expected end total should be in the region of £475. A fantastic effort for a great cause.

Ten year anniversary for the treatment rooms Wednesday 15th October saw Emma Ballard celebrating the tenth anniversary of what is a hugely successful business.
Emma started out with one member of staff, Kathryn, and they are still working together today. In a testament to Emma’s leadership qualities her staff of 9 have all been with her for several years. Katie and Lucy, who have worked there for 8 and 6 years respectively, concurred with the rest of staff by saying that, “the Treatment Rooms is a fantastic place to work. Emma is lovely and we are a great team, and more like a family than work colleagues”. Initially, Emma offered Elemis treatments and nails. Today she is a Elemis Premier Salon and a Clarins Gold Salon. There is the full range of waxing, threading and tanning treatments available, for men as well as women, along with the nail bar and spa treatments. The business is spread over three floors, all tastefully decorated, and beautifully lit for the ultimate in relaxation.
The most popular treatments are non surgical facelifts, and if you call in a member of staff will take you through the full ‘Caci ultimate’ treatment system.
New to the business are the ‘Lynton’ Pulsed Light treatments which offer reduction in acne, red vein and pigment removal, skin rejuvenation and longterm hair removal. Again, call in for a full consultation on the procedures available. Emma told Grange Now, “I love what I do and I have such a great team. We all work really well together.” Emma and partner Ian, also have two young boys, Roman and Casper. On asking Emma how she manages to juggle running a successful business while bringing up a young family, She

admitted that it is hard, “I’m a home bird at heart and love to spend time with my boys but I feel very lucky to have them and the business but I couldn’t do it without Ian.”
We have no doubt that Emma and her team will celebrate another ten years in business and more.

Grange Institutes secure lottery funding
Grange Institute are delighted to announce that they have received, ‘a substantial sum’ from lottery funding to help pay for a new eco-friendly central heating system. Following grants from Cumbria County Council Community Fund, Grange Bay Villa Trust, the Hadfield Trust, and the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust the lottery ‘Awards for All’ donation made it possible for the project to go ahead. A spokesperson from the Institute told Grange Now, “we have not only received money from the above organisations but also from many local people, too numerous to mention but to whom we’re very grateful”.

Firstly an examination of your gums and bone structure is needed, this allows your dentist to plan the best course of treatment designed just for you. Here at Smiles Dental in Grange, we offer new patients a consultation free of charge, to discuss the options available.
The first step to making a denture is to take an impression of your gums and any remaining teeth so that your dentures match the shape and structure of your mouth to maximise your comfort. If you require partial dentures, an assessment of the shape and colour of existing teeth will ensure a perfect match. If you have had teeth removed you will need to allow time for your gums to heal and shrink back to normal so you may end up having more than one set of dentures in your lifetime. If you are interested in dentures please feel free to call us on 015395 34554 to make your appointment.
IN BRIEF Playground on the Prom condemned At the time of going to press the playground on the prom has been closed off.
A spokesperson for SLDC told Grange Now, “Following a routine inspection of the play equipment on the prom, a panel on the Activity Train with slide was discovered to be damaged. Material has been ordered to fix the equipment and it should be repaired and reopened by the end of next week (Friday 31 October). Usually we try to isolate the problem item of equipment so that the playground can still be used, on this occasion it has not been possible and so for safety reasons the whole playground has been closed for the short term.” Hopefully, by the time you read this the playground will have re-opened and be fully functional.

Heel pain The heels repeatedly hit the ground with considerable force when walking or running. When pain develops in the heel, it can be very disabling, making every step a problem, affecting your posture. There are various types of heel pain. Some of the most common are: heel spurs, heel bursitis and heel bumps. Heel spurs are normally most painful when standing, particularly first thing in the morning when you get up. They are relatively common, though usually occurring after the age of 40. There are no visible features on the heel but a deep localised painful spot can be found in or around the middle of the sole of the heel. Although it is often associated with a spur of bone sticking out of the heel bone (heel spur syndrome), approximately ten per cent of the population have heel spurs without any pain. Heel bursitis pain can be felt at the back of the heel when the ankle joint is moved and there may be a swelling on both sides of the Achilles tendon. Heel bumps are firm bumps on the back of the heel, they are often rubbed by shoes causing pain. To ensure that you receive the right treatment, see a podiatrist for advice.

Mayor’s Christmas Fair
Our hardworking Mayor is currently visiting the shops and businesses of Grange in search of raffle and tombola prizes for the Mayor’s Christmas Fair which will take place in Victoria Hall on Saturday 29th November.
Open Gardens 2015
The Grange in Bloom Group are hoping to hold an Open Gardens Day again in 2015 and are looking for people with interesting gardens whether large or small to step forward to join the Open Garden Day.
The date has not yet been decided, but will take into account the wishes of those who agree to open their gardens. We would also like to have a plant stall on the day so if anyone has any interesting or unusual plants that they no longer require we’d be happy to relieve you of them. It would help if they could be potted up, but I am happy to collect them and pot them up if necessary.
Mayor, Tricia Thomas, told Grange Now, “I am overwhelmed by the generosity of local business people. They have all been so generous and given excellent prizes. Practically every business has given a prize which is just fantastic”.
It looks like there will be something for everyone with a tombola, children’s tombola, stalls, crafts, gifts, a raffle, and of course a visit from the man himself, Santa who will have gifts for children up to the age of 7. Tricia herself has donated, as a raffle prize, a hand-topped quilt which she has spent many months making. Local charities have been offered free tables
Please contact Jan Tomlinson 36919 or email c374tomlinson@btinternet.com if you feel that you can help in any way. Sew good: Mayor, Tricia Thomas, with her hand-topped quilt
at the Fair in order to make much needed funds. Robyn from Vibe has offered to braid children’s hair with proceeds going to the Mayor’s Charities Diabetes UK and St Mary’s Hospice at Home while Charity & Co will provide the cakes and
refreshments. Come along and support the event, and perhaps win a great prize, on Saturday 29 November, Victoria Hall between 10am - 2pm. All proceeds to the Mayor’s charities, Diabetes UK and St Mary’s Hospice at Home.
Swings and Roundabouts!
were a definite highlight, the kids had a brilliant time throwing eggs and wanging wellies and a fantastic £523.07 was raised. Fundraising events were completed with a spookily fun halloween disco, continuing their close collaboration with Allithwaite Community Centre committee.
It has been an eventful year for Allithwaite Playground. The February gales brought the largest tree crashing down onto their newest piece of equipment, the basket swing. Plans were made to trek across the Bay with Cedric Robinson and the fundraising started in earnest. Bad weather stalled their first attempt but in June young and old took to the sands raising an amazing £2,964.01.

event in September was hugely successful. Ducks were hooked, cakes eaten, faces painted and a fair few bacon butties cooked! The wacky races
The committee would like to thank everyone for the massive support they receive, not only from families from all over the peninsula, but also local businesses. Watch out for a new addition to the playground coming soon.
A date for your diary is 6th December which is the date for this year’s Christmas Extravaganza. You may remember the appalling weather from last year’s event which all but blew the marquee away, so let us hope it is a little kinder this year. There are still a few stalls available (£10 each for the day) and this year the Chamber of Trade has managed to secure three sites: St Paul’s Church Hall, the Methodist Church Hall and the Catholic Church grounds and fields. If you would like a table please contact Vicky, At Home 34400. Grange has got Talent will once again feature, Paul and Lorraine from Bargain Booze are providing the bar again and Santa is setting up his temporary Grotto in the grounds of the Catholic Church.
South Lake District Council (SLDC) has agreed to £1.20 for all day parking in all the town’s car parks on the day of the extravaganza.
Grange Town Council had tried to secure free parking but this is all they would agree to, and just a we went to press it was confirmed by SLDC Cllr Giles Archibald that all the town’s car parks will be £1.20 for a full day’s parking, for every Saturday in December.

The Triple Lock guarantee, introduced thanks to the Liberal Democrats in Government, means that pensions will increase with inflation, earnings or 2.5 per cent - whichever is highest – every year. The most that a pensioner can currently get is £113.10, so that should rise by £2.83 to £115.93. The Triple Lock delivers a pension rise of whichever is the greater of average earnings, inflation or 2.5%.This means that next year the basic state pension will rise by 2.5% or £2.85 a week.

On Christmas Eve at 4 pm the Rector, Nick Ash, held a short service of remembrance during which we tried – and tried – and tried to light the candles while the wind blew, branches were dropping off the trees and the rain pelted down! Although the candles are specially designed for outdoor use on graves and have 3 burn days (although this is not guaranteed!), they just could not cope with the atrocious weather. However, this year we are giving it another go! If anyone would like to join us, then please call and see
Linda Brown at the Parish Office in the Parish Hall (Thursday, 2-4 pm). We have a limited supply, and you can reserve one for £5. Please note that the candles are made from highly refined wax and specialised wick for dependable performance outdoors, with different melting points depending on external temperature. It is recommended that the candles are secured with weight or by pushing into grass to stop them toppling over. They can be placed inside a lantern or holder.

Flooks for Youth appeal
As reported in the October edition of Grange Now, the junior section of Flooks youth club, which was running once a week in Flookburgh Village Hall, has not reopened after the Summer break. This is due to
a lack of funds. The service is currently only being provided for children between ages 11 - 16. The committee are working hard to re-open the junior section. They are now appealing to all parents and guardians of children between the ages of 8 and 11 in the Cark, Flookburgh and Allithwaite areas to meet with them. The meeting, to discuss
Sam was invited to attend the Capital One Cup third round Liverpool FC vs Middlesbrough FC on 23rd of September. Liverpool won after a record breaking penalty shoot out. He had a fantastic time and got to walk out with the captain, and England International player, Rickie Lambert. He also enjoyed rubbing shoulders with England striker Daniel Sturridge and Italian forward Mario Balotelli.
ways to restart the popular club, will take place on 6th November at 5.30 pm in Flookburgh Village Hall. Anyone with any interest can contact Julia Brown (58626), Lyn Prescott (58224) or Cath Graham (59465) for more information.
The Grange Lions have already donated £100 to the club and hopefully they will receive the Lloyds Community Funding Award.
Singing for the Brain It’s official, singing is good for you and it is, apparently, particularly beneficial for people with mild to moderate dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society have been busy setting up Singing for the Brain groups all over the country with much success. The two hour sessions are for people with mild to moderate dementia and their carers and consist of an hour’s singing, with time before and afterwards to chat and enjoy refreshments in the company of others. The songs are simple and fun and the emphasis is on enjoyment and acceptance.
The Soroptimist International Grange over Sands club president, Janice Carrick, has been busy raising funds and being trained to deliver a pilot programme of 10 sessions, which started at 10.30am on Thursday, October 16th at Grange Methodist Church Hall. At the time of writing this, there are still places available at the Grange group, so if you or someone you know could benefit, please contact: Sue Scott, 01539 742631 or Janice Carrick, 015395 58001 for more information.

Cartmel Township Initiative
Residents and local businesses from Cartmel attended a public meeting last month to discuss the future of the village.
Almost 100 people attended the event organised by the Cartmel Township Initiative in order to view and comment upon the recommendations drawn up by the consultants Allies and Morrison. The recommendations covered 4 themed areas which included Parking and Traffic Management alongside measures to improve the environmental aspects of the village.

Rise in wages for apprentices
A proposal to create a single national minimum wage for 16 to 17 year olds in work, and first year of apprenticeships, will be presented to the Low Pay Commission (LPC). It would mean around 31,000 apprentices in the first year of their programme will benefit from a pay rise of more than £1 an hour. The proposal to the LPC would see wages will rise from £2.73 to £3.79 an hour on current rates. This will also help employers by simplifying pay structures.

The proposals have been strongly influenced by the consultation which took place with local residents during the course of the Summer and the meeting aimed to provide opportunities to comment before production of the final report.
The general consensus is that change is needed. The report, due to be published in November, will outline suggestions as to how the village can cope with the growing number of visitors whilst also ensuring that the needs of local residents are managed. The report will set out the principles to move forward; further consultation and dialogue will take place with residents and businesses before any projects or schemes are introduced.
A Berry Good Year! Brown Robin update
2014 has been an amazing year for berries and nuts. I think mainly due to 2 mild winters and a long dry summer here.
Main: Yew Berry
Inset: Rowan Berry
Free portrait cartoons by Elvsie, Husky Dog Rides, Flookburgh Band, Owls, Festive Stalls, Bar, Food, Grotto, Talent Show, Children’s Rides, Treasure Hunt £1.20 all day parking Festive Stalls will be held in the Methodist Church Hall Fun, Food & Frolics outside St Charles’ Catholic Church & in St Pauls Church Hall. All starting from 11:00am
The hazel trees on the reserve were so laden with nuts, we had “Nutters” (old word for people gathering hazelnuts), which I haven’t seen for a long time.
I have also met people carrying buckets full of blackberries to make jams and tarts, and I too, have found myself munching away on them whilst wandering around Brown Robin. They say we may be in for a hard winter when we get bumper fruits and nut crops and judging by the amount of geese migrating over, I can well believe it. Bumper berry trees; rowan, sorbus spp, once called the fowlers tree, as they used to put nets up to catch thrushes for the pot.
Yew, taxus spp, although the seed is poisonous many species eat the attractive fruit, such as winter thrushes like redwing, but
also badgers will eat them, but regurgitate the seed back up.
Cherry, sorbus spp. I have seen lots of these tiny fruit on the ground this season and the hawfinch on the reserve will take full advantage of this crop.
Parking only £1.20 in all Grange car parks for all Saturdays in December including the 6th
Whitebeam, sorbus spp, our rarest tree on the reserve, however if we get an eruption of waxwing this year, they will soon be stripped of their berries. The beech mast has also been great this year, providing food for deer, squirrels and a stash for the jay too.
All these seeds will be dispersed by the wildlife throughout the reserve and beyond which is great for species such as the rare whitebeam, and I think some of us too have, had a more wild food experience for a change. Thank you, Tony Saunders, Hon Res Manager.
Grange Drama raise funds for charity Grange Drama would like to thank all those who attended the July performances of ‘The Bear’ & ‘The Proposal’, by Anton Chekhov. The group has recently donated the entire surplus from the play (£265.03) to the ‘Care At Home’ nursing facility of St.Mary’s Hospice. A Grange Drama Committee member told Grange Now, “This is to recognise, in a small way, the support that this service gave to one of our much-beloved actors, Marion Chadwick, who passed away earlier this year, but who remains very much alive in our hearts.”
I think that’s all, in fact what more could you want?!

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands
Welcome to our Summer Newsletter, the good weather meant we enjoyed a wide range of events and entertainment, much of it outside – as well as all our usual activities. July
After the excitement of our Strawberry Fete, we got back into the swing of things. Andrew and the residents started 2 long term projects, a wall mural and a paper tissue flower mosaic. In the middle of the month, we decided to grow some plants – Venus Fly Traps and planted the unsold flowers from the fete.
At Allithwaite carnival the residents enjoyed watching the procession and Andrew & Tony went down to Allithwaite Playing Field to see Bay Search & Rescue’s vehicles. It was quite a musical month with visits from the Nostalgia Singers and Judith Pool brought some more of her young musicians. There is nothing better than sitting in the warm sun with a cool drink listening to music.
September During August Sian from Lambert’s In early September several residents and staff went to Pet Food shop brought some adorable rabbits for the residents to Lakeside to have tea at the train station, before returning on the stroke and hold. steam train. They had a surprise at Haverthwaite where they were able to stroke a range of owls being displayed by the Owl Sanctuary. August
On Friday 12th Zoolab came to visit The Old Vicarage, we invited the reception class from Allithwaite Primary to join us and meet an array of animals including a giant millipede, hissing cockroach, cornsnake and giant African land snail.
Sian shows Beatrice the cutest rabbit outside of a Beatrix Potter story In the middle of the month we had a visit from Stephen Watson an origami expert, who impressed all the residents with his skills and showed everyone how to make some amazing designs.
Judith Pool returned in mid August with another group of talented youngsters, who played a variety of instruments. We also went to Holker Hall for a walk around the gardens and a well earned afternoon tea.
Listening to Nostalgia Singers during a warm summer’s day We also received 2 beautiful black cats from Jennifer Light, granddaughter of Kenneth Eachus, who was a former resident. They are called Ollie and Ellie and they immediately took to the residents.
As well as the 2 long term projects the residents also made dream catchers, plaster of paris fridge magnets – very messy and personalised coasters with their photos in.
We had another outing towards the end of August to Clare House in Grange, where residents, staff and family members enjoyed afternoon tea and some delicious cakes.
Forthcoming Events
Bonfire Night 5th November at 6 pm 20th Anniversary Party Sat 22nd November at 2pm
Elaine holding the hissing cockroach – its huge! That same day we had a visit from Richard Bromley, a pianist who played some inspiring classical music.
On the 19th Judith Pool organised a concert at Grange Methodist church to support the Jigsaw charity and several residents gladly attended. We ended the month with a Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning with cakes made by staff and guests. We raised £118.
The Old Vicarage currently has a few vacancies, if you would like to come and look around or want some information please ring on 015395 33703. info@grangenow.co.uk

Men desperately needed!
Flookburgh and District Amateur Operatic Society are proud to announce that their next production will be, ‘The adventures of Tom Dixon’. Born in a small Lancashire fishing village, Tom, a rifleman in the Napoleonic wars joined the local volunteer militia when Napoleon Bonaparte threatens the Kent shores. The story tells of his days as a professional soldier in the Peninsular War, the Anglo-American War of 1812 and the climax, between Napoleon and Britain and her allies, at the Battle of Waterloo.
A tale, not of an officer or gentleman’s son, but of an ordinary, yet remarkable man with all the foibles that human beings possess. His love of life, his brushes with death, but most of all, the eternal and everlasting affairs of the heart. The Society would like to warmly invite new members to come along to rehearsals which take place at Lower Holker Village Hall every Monday from 7.30pm.
Julie Holmes told Grange Now, “men are desperately needed for this production” and she went on to say, “if you love Sharpe, you’ll love this”. Just go along or contact Julie on 07713 631344 for further information. Production dates: 24th - 28th March 2015.

Whether you are thinking about your own Christmas table, something special to cook for visitors, or the perfect gift, the talent of our local food producers mustn’t be overlooked. Here are our top five award-winning recommendations for Cumbrian produce to include on your shopping lists this Christmas: Bedrock Gin has attracted numerous accolades and was declared the only Master in the premium category of the Gin Masters Awards 2014, where it was praised for its viscosity and lavender and citrus notes. Our own Kendal Creamy Cheese, A Taste Cumbria Gold Champion in last year’s Cumbria Life Food & Drink Awards, the judges were really impressed with “exactly the right sweetness of flavour and wonderful texture”. Ginger Baker’s Westmorland Pepper Cake described as “a distinctive fruit cake with ground cloves, ginger and black pepper”, the Westmorland Pepper
Cake’s origins date back to the spice trade on the west Cumberland coast, which saw regular imports of pepper and other spices. It has recently been awarded ‘forgotten food’ status by the Slow Food Movement. High Cup Wines Townhead Farm is Cumbria’s only commercial vineyard and winery and produces the High Cup range, which is made from fruit grown mainly on the farm. Damson, rhubarb and elderflower sit comfortably alongside the more unusual spiced beetroot wine, which is ideal for mulling at this time of year. Agnes Rose Fruit Vinegar Naomi Derbyshire developed her award-winning herb-infused oils and fruit vinegars in her parents’ pantry. Having outgrown the pantry, Naomi is now based in Kendal and her Agnes Rose delights are musthave or must-give items this Christmas!

County Matters
Tim’s Column
I am happy to report that the Village Hall at High Newton has a new committee consisting of new and established members. I must thank retiring members for their help and support over the years and hopefully now with continued local community support it will go from strength to strength. With this in mind the new committee are holding a get together for the local community on the 7th November from 7-30pm at The Crown when they will share their ideas for the use of the hall and ask you all for your input. The new booking clerks for the hall are Ian and Hilary Saunders ianpian59@gmail.com 015395 31102 / 07835 251261. Unfortunately at our recent County Council Neighbourhood Forum meeting the Police Commissioner was unable to attend because of ill health. Instead we had a lively discussion on the local health service and the way forward for health provision in our area. As everyone is aware there is a consultation happening within the
As I mentioned a couple of months ago in Grange Now, the National Grid is consulting on its proposals for the transmission of electricity from the planned new nuclear power station at Moorside near Sellafield through to the rest of the national grid. Their current thinking is to route the power lines down the west coast of Cumbria to some point between Barrow and Ulverston from where they will take them under Morecambe Bay to Heysham. This will be a very very big construction project and will bring a great deal of employment to the area, but runs the risk of having quite a big effect on our landscape. One of the earlier plans even had the cables running all the way along the A590, where the pylons run now. Fortunately even though they still say that this would be the most straightforward approach they appear to have seen sense and, after a lot of pressure from me and other people, dropped that idea. They want to hear as many views as possible on their plans, I realise that they now seem to be passing a long way from Grange and Cartmel, but that should not stop you from having your say. We really do not want them to change their minds about this. You have missed the roadshow in Cartmel but you can still make your voice heard by going to the website www.northwestcoastconnections. com where they tell you more about the plans and how to make your voice heard.
health service about the provision of both primary care (GP’s) and acute care (Hospitals).Hopefully the options will be presented to us all next year for full public consultation. The closer to home model of care which a lot of the health professionals are talking about needs to be properly resourced and thought through but is one which we all would welcome.
To reduce house fire risks in Cumbria, free electric blanket testing is being offered at venues across the county. Testing is strictly by appointment so contact CFRS on 01768 812549, leave your name and number, state Grange Fire Station as the venue and give an approximate time when you would like to attend. The Grange Fire Station day will be held on Thursday 6th November between 9 - 4.30pm. If your blanket fails the safety check, the Fire and Rescue Service will provide a new one.
Do unwanted callers make you feel vulnerable? We all get unexpected callers from time to time, and these can be a real worry to someone who lives alone or feels vulnerable. For those affected by this, help is at hand through the ‘Nominated Neighbour Scheme’. If you have a Named Nominated Neighbour, you need not open the door to anyone but instead hold up a card at the window and ask them to go to the neighbour printed on your card. The neighbour will then check the caller is genuine and come back with them to supervise the visit and
make sure that nothing untoward happens. To get a pack containing more details about the scheme you can contact Trading Standards by ringing the Citizens Advice Consumer Help Line 03454 04 05 06 or emailing trading-standards@ cumbria.gov.uk. The local policing team really feel this scheme could help to protect vulnerable residents.
Advice you can trust Getting answers to financial questions is essential as we all go through life’s ups and downs. You may not know who to turn to for professional and informed financial advice and some advisers are now very selective about who they see. Whether you have £10,000 or £10 million, we aim to provide you with quality financial advice.
You can see a financial adviser at any of our Furness Building Society branches or call:
Even without this investment the economy around here does appear to be on the mend. We have seen the release of the latest unemployment figures which show that this constituency has the fourth lowest rate of people on Jobseeker’s Allowance of any in the country. Added to which we are seeing other tiny green shoots with the numbers of empty shops in Kendal and Ulverston declining (Grange, as you know better than I do, is stuck with 3 empty shops) and across South Lakeland the level of empty shops is well below the national and regional levels. We have seen an average of over 60 apprentices being taken on each month for the past and we are even going to see pensions increase by more than the rate of inflation next year. All in all it is starting to feel like we are turning a corner. That is not to say that the job is anything like done. I know that there is so much more work to be done before we have a strong, healthy economy here. Wages are still far too low and property is still unaffordable for many people, but at least things seem to be heading in the right direction. If I can help you with these or any other issues, or indeed if you have any thoughts or suggestions then please do get in touch, you can email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403 As ever thanks for your support. Church News
St Paul’s, Grange
St. Mary’s, Allithwaite Since the end of the summer break there has been a lot going on at St Mary’s. Groups for children and young people have got going again with “Godz Gang” meeting on a Sunday morning during the main church service, Rock Solid for school years 3-7 enjoying a variety of activities on Friday evenings and the Allithwaite youth group meeting on Friday evenings at the Institute. Children are also increasingly taking part in the All-Age Sunday worship service held on the third Sunday of each month. Another “Messy Church”at the end of September was greatly enjoyed by 45+ children and their parents on a Monday afternoon after school.
A new Alpha course started at the end of September on Monday evenings and after some food together addresses questions like “Why am I here?”, “Who is Jesus?” and “Why did Jesus die?” - giving an opportunity for honest discussion of
some difficult questions by those not yet sure of the relevance of Christianity to their lives as well as for those wishing to brush up on the basics of the Christian faith. Another “Growing Leaders” course has also got under way helping potential future leaders from various churches in the area to discover their particular gifts and how these may best be used in leadership roles in the future. We have also enjoyed several social events in recent weeks including a late summer barbeque Sunday lunch on a
perfect day in September, a “refreshing” evening for ladies who enjoyed a delicious cooked meal and a talk by one of our younger members, the usual “Jacobs Join” harvest lunch following the annual Harvest Thanksgiving service at the beginning of October, and a murder mystery evening later in the month – the latter also included a three course dinner and was a fund raising event to provide free places for accompanied children at our Away Weekend in March next year.
The final gift for my Golden Jubilee was a visit to Edgbaston in the committee hospitality centre – all paid for! Along with three guests we were welcomed and led to the aforementioned centre where tea, coffee, soft drinks and chocolate biscuits awaited us. my length in the concourse of New Street Station! – only to be rescued by a charming Asian couple whose kindness and concern was an excellent witness to humanity. Incidentally, I fell BEFORE I had any beverage! Being well padded, I suffered no bruising or discomfort. I see we have a nice proper hedge now on Park Road – thanks to Mrs Shapland who some time ago, told me to be patient! The ‘Quick Journey through the Bible’ got off to a good start and was very much enjoyed by the parishioners. Communications with the Bishop look like providing
A Design Brief for our chosen architect will be prepared. We invite comments from members of the community who may have strong views about the future role of our parish church. We, at St Paul’s, were delighted to hear that our Deputy Churchwarden, Mrs Julia Gilchrist, has been accepted for training as a Reader within the Diocese of Carlisle. Julia will undertake a year’s training, the practical part of which will include her occasionally preaching and leading worship. In this challenging time of change within our Diocese, the importance of Lay Ministry cannot be emphasised enough and we are all giving Julia our whole-hearted support.

the Fell Church and Robin Webster is going to kick-start our fundraising with an evening of slides and conversation about Old Grange. This will be held at 7pm on Friday 7th November at the Fell Church. No admission charge, but donations welcome. The poignant All Souls’ Service will take place in St Paul’s at 3pm on Sunday 2nd November. If there are names you would like to be remembered please write the names on the cards provided and place them in the wreath in the Lady Chapel. The town’s Remembrance Service will take place in church at 2pm on Sunday 9th November. This will be immediately followed by the procession down to the War Memorial for laying of the wreaths.

Mingling with other guests we watched the cricket in comfort enjoying certain liquid spiritual refreshments! An excellent lunch (wine included), more cricket, scones with jam and clotted cream were followed by a very kind invitation to have a directed tour of this magnificent building. The visit came to a close with the offer of further beverages, which, out of politeness I duly accepted! An ordered taxi got us to New Street Station in good time and after an uneventful journey, we arrived home exhausted, but delighted with an excellent day. One slight hiccup – I measured
Having taken the decision to sell the Parish Hall, the congregation met in mid-October to consider which activities of the Parish Hall should be transferred to St Paul’s, how our facilities should be adapted to them, and also to review what changes and improvements could and should be made to our current building.
some interesting news for the future (only guessing of course!)
The Bishop, on behalf of the diocese, hosted an excellent evening for this year’s Jubilarians. A great idea, excellent food, a good chat – all much appreciated.
Deacon George has been taken by the Bishop for three new diocesan areas of work, so I’m afraid his work in the parish will be greatly diminished – to say the least.
The Friends of St Peter’s, Field Broughton are holding their ever popular, ‘Soup and Stalls’, on Saturday November
8th between 12 noon and 2pm. A variety of homemade soups together with the opportunity of bargains galore in our, ‘Shop of Treasures’.
Churches Together Since last month’s issue we have celebrated our Harvest Festival and had our Harvest Supper, always joyful occasions. We were pleased to welcome to our Harvest Supper John Towler, from the Churches Together Youth Trust and the new Youth Worker, Barbara Hardt, from Brazil. They told us something of their plans for reaching out to young people in the area. Our Harvest Appeal will support their work.

Our Learn Together Morning was to do with foods from different parts of the World followed by the Harvest Celebrations. We held a Macmillan Coffee Morning and Dolphins sold lots of delicious cakes provided by parents and raised a fantastic £172. The beginning of October saw Nursery doing a super assembly where they sang their favourite song ‘the Hairy Scary Castle’. Reception and Year 1 children are preparing for ‘Autumn’ topic and made little hedgehogs using leaves. Years 2, 3 and 4’s (Octopuses) topic this term has been ‘Stone Age to Bronze Age’ incorporating Science. They are looking forward to their educational visit to Keswick Museum and Castlerigg Stone Circle where they will have an opportunity to learn about these prehistoric periods. Year 5 and 6 children’s (Sharks) topic is ‘Industry’. They have been looking at different industries in and around Flookburgh and across the world. This half term it was all
to do with ‘Transport’ – how it has changed over time and its effects on industry. Also, Mr. Wilkinson and the Sharks have been taking part in the BBC Ten Pieces Initiative. They attended a showing of the Ten Pieces film at Vue Cinema in Barrow-in-Furness. Dolphins (Nurture Group) are on a top secret mission to search for signs of Aliens in the village. There have been several reports about UFOs in the airspace over Flookburgh, requiring further investigation by Dolphins… For more news check our website: www.flookburgh.cumbria.sch.uk

Our Reception children are enjoying our new outdoors area. The wonderful weather has meant that they have been able to make the most of their access to outdoor learning. Our Year 2 and 3 class have also enjoyed the outdoors as they have been learning about life in the Stone Age. Years 4,5 and 6 have all been learning about Japan. They have also been working with an artist to produce work for a window display as part of the Kendal Comic Art festival.
We celebrated Harvest at St Paul’s church, thinking about those who are less fortunate than ourselves both in the UK and in other parts of the world. The children brought tins and dried food that could be distributed by the local food bank and then also raised £43 for the bishop of Carlisle’s
harvest appeal, supporting Christian Aid to respond quickly to natural disasters. The children took part in the service, having written poems and prayers reflecting on thankfulness and our response to the needs of others.

Enthralled: Taffy Thomas weaving a tale
Taffy Thomas MBE, the famous local storyteller, launched our Writing Week taking the children on story walks around Allithwaite and Boarbank Hall. Thank you to Sister Eileen and her Sisters for providing delicious chocolate biscuits to the children! The Year 2s have discovered a fairy ring made of mushrooms near to school. This was a very exciting discovery, and to try and find out more about the fairies, the children have written a class letter to them and are awaiting a reply! The writing week will be followed by time spent focussing on World War I through poetry and art. The whole
school will be involved with this and will contribute to the local World War One commemorations and our own acts of remembrance. The Year 5 and 6 children have taken part in an exciting robotics workshop at school, which was run by STEM. Singing Squad are practicing hard for their Young Voices concert at the Manchester Echo Arena in March 2015. They will be part of a 3,000 strong children’s choir. We are also pleased to have launched our new website which is now online so take a look: www.allithwaite.cumbria.sch.uk

Dear Editor in response to your article re ‘Infrastructure’ in the September edition and the possible removal of Transpennine Express services and replacement with services run by Northern Rail - perish the thought! I recently had the dubious pleasure of travelling on one of Northern Rail’s services, the ‘boneshaker express’ from Carnforth to Leeds. Rolling stock well past its’ sell-by date and in a shocking state of repair - no heating in my coach and no draught excluders on the door bottoms provided a near ‘polar’ experience. Upholstery not fit for purpose and of course the perennial problem with this company, seating too close together, I always have to sit side-saddle! The thought of losing the excellent Transpennine Express services does not bear thinking about and we should do all that we can to preserve services which connect us to the rest of the country in a manner befitting the 21st century. Dismayed, Grange (Name & Address supplied)

The ‘look out’ at the highest point offers a splendid view over Grange and Morecambe Bay and during the last year someone has kindly made a wooden bench for people to sit down and enjoy the surroundings . The fine weather this summer has attracted more than average numbers of people to this spot -- sadly with attendant noise, litter and even potential fires. (The Fire Brigade had to be called out on one occasion). A few weeks ago a noise was heard from a nearby house of something falling over the cliff edge and later one of the dog walkers came upon the sorry sight of the bench lying in the trees below the view point . This has obviously been some mindless prank, but how sad that one of our local amenities has been used in such a way. Name and address supplied
Dear Editor Some time earlier this year a beautiful wooden seat appeared at the viewpoint Yewbarrow Crag. I meant to write at the time to congratulate whoever had made it for their skill and to thank them. It was in an ideal position to sit and admire the view across Grange and out to the Bay, albeit a view slightly obscured now by saplings that have grown up. On Friday evening, September 26th, some persons manoeuvred the seat to the edge of the cliff and pushed it over. It must have bounced on or over the path below – and would certainly have caused serious injury to any person or animal walking along at the time – and eventually landed amongst the shrubs below. What a senseless piece of vandalism. I am not sure how badly the seat has been damaged but I hope it might be possible to restore it in its original position. In a separate incident two weeks previously the Fire Brigade were called out to extinguish fires that had been lit in the same area. Both the Council (tel 32375) and Police (tel 101) have been informed, and would welcome further information on either of these incidents. Name and address supplied.
Lindale Pre-School Nursery
The Harvest has been one of the big topics at Lindale Pre-School Nursery this half-term, as well as life on farms. We enjoyed a visit to Old Hall Farm in Bouth to feed chickens, cows and pigs, look at corn after it has been harvested, and learn about how old threshing machines work. Our big thanks go to Charlotte and Alex Sharphouse at the farm, and to Tracy for giving us a great tour.
Other activities related to the Harvest have included making scarecrows and learning about tractors. Thanks to Dave Marwood of DJ Marwood in Lindale for letting us look at and sit on
some of his tractors, and to Ian Crowe of Crowe Plant Hire, who gave us a big tractor tyre full of mud for the children to dig into! The next Nursery fundraiser will be our annual Clothes and Toy Sale, to be held on Saturday 29 November from 10am to 12 noon at Lindale Village Hall. This event has been running for several years now, and it is a great opportunity to pick up new toys and clothes for your children and dispose of unwanted ones of your own!
Acorn Montessori We have welcomed many new faces at Acorn Montessori this term, lots of children and a new member of staff – Mrs Emma (Wattam).
The children have been very busy looking at the signs of Autumn and enjoyed a wonderful morning in Cartmel Woods. We are now focussing on Halloween, Diwali and Bonfire Night. If you would like to find out more about the nursery school please contact us on 35629/07971 828797 and book a place at our forthcoming parents evening or arrange a visit.

LEGAL TALK They say that behind every good man, there is a good woman. You will be used to seeing Martin’s face on these articles but let’s hear from Joanne Grisdale, another key member of the team, with the answers to a couple of common questions.
Q: My mother went into a care home last year. I have been told that I have to sell her home to pay her care fees. Is that right? My parents worked hard all their lives and paid tax since they left school. A: When someone goes into care, the Local Authority assess how much they have to pay towards their fees. This depends on their income from pensions etc and also how much capital or savings they have. If they have capital over £23,250 in total (and this includes a house) they have to pay the full rate of care fees which are currently between £2-3,000 every month. I presume your mother’s savings have been used up, and the house has to be sold to meet the continuing fees. You can ask the Local Authority to defer fees and they will effectively give you an interest free loan as long as your mother is alive to avoid having to sell the house sooner than you would want to but you have to pay eventually. Q: That doesn’t seem very fair to me. My in-laws own their own home. They are fit and healthy now but could the same happen to them? A: If only one of your in-laws goes into a home, the Local Authority won’t take account of the value of the house while the other is still living in it (although they will take savings into account), but if the other then dies or needs care themselves, the value of the house will be taken into account and it may need to be sold to meet fees. Q: Can’t they just sign the house over to my husband and his brothers and get round the problem that way? A: Yes and no. If someone gives their house away with the intention of avoiding care fees, the Local Authority can treat this as ‘deprivation of capital’ and the fees of the person who has signed the house over are calculated as if they still own the house. But if the house is given away when they are in good health with no reasonable prospect of requiring care, the Local Authorities own rules make it hard for them to take the house value in to account. Making outright gifts can be risky, though. Instead of an outright gift, they would get much more protection by putting the property into a family Trust. The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch
This month we held our A.G.M. where we elected new committee members and re-elected old ones. The chairperson began by thanking all members and particularly committee members for their hard work, enthusiasm and good company over the past year. She told members that the year had been very enjoyable and busy. After the A.G.M., we split into four small groups to work on four different stitches. Each group was led by one of our own members; Mary, Sandra Gillian and Joanna led the groups working on Fly Stitch, Eyelet Stitch, Running Stitch and Cretan Stitch respectively. The stitches were demonstrated and then members worked the basic stitch. After practising the basic stitch members then varied the thread and worked the stitch in a variety of ways thinking about how they could use the stitch they were creating. Thank you to the four members who led the groups. The next meeting is Tuesday 4th November when Joanna Henson will be running a workshop on Stick Weaving. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229 861800.
Grange Soroptomists
In September members had a talk about “Mary’s Meals” a charity providing a hot meal in school for chronically poor children in Malawi and other countries. This attracts children into school and helps them gain an education and a better future. The club enjoyed a live screening of the Last Night of the Proms and supper at the Commodore. The club’s 60th charter was celebrated 10 – 12th Oct with a weekend of activities involving local people and Soroptimists from around the world . Celebrations started with a reception in Cartmel Priory. A Gala dinner at the

Grange Hotel was attended by 100 guests including Margaret Oldroyd President of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and NI. The finale of the celebrations was the unveiling of the Town Crest by club President Janice Carrick. The crest was handed over to Grange Mayor Tricia Thomas in recognition of the great support the Soroptimists receive from the people of Grange. Janice thanked the many businesses and organisations who had made donations. The club’s latest project “ Singing for the Brain” starts on Thursday 16th. Further information on our work and events on website www. sigbi.org/grange-over-sands/ The picture shows a group of Italian Soroptimists leaving Grange with some (excellent!) reading matter for their journey home! They had been here to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Grange Club.
Cartmel Art Society
After a very successful Annual Exhibition in August, the Autumn programme of workshops and afternoon painting sessions resumed in September. We opened with a full day workshop “ Wildlife in Mixed Media” with local artist and illustrator Marianne Birkby. After a lovely Summer members had plenty of inspiration for our first afternoon painting session when we painted pictures of our Summer memories. In our October full day workshop exuberant Les Darlow brought his unique style to demonstrate simple but effective techniques in pastel to create an atmospheric landscape. Most inspiring and fun with amazing results!
Townswomen’s Guild Report
It was a delight to have Paul Hughes at our meeting, telling us the history of Grange Bakery since 1911. It was even more delightful when he shared his wares with us – tarts and breads. Thank you Paul. Some of us joined the two coach loads of Townswomen’s Guild members from Roose, Hawcoat and Ulverston on an ‘Autumn Tints’ outing. There were 60 ladies altogether. We were picked up at Grange Station and taken to Lakeside for a prebooked cruise on Teal. Then on to Bowness and taken to Lakeside for a pre-booked cruise on Teal. There then followed a sumptuous tea at Castle Green Hotel in Kendal. The highlight was our secretary winning the free raffle prize of a book about Lakeland gardens. On October 23rd members enjoyed the 69th birthday lunch, at Hampfell House Hotel, of the founding of Townswomen’s Guild in Grange. On November 13th John Parker is giving one of his enthralling travelogues. Turkey is very much in the news at present so his talk will be popular. This is an Open Meeting and visitors are welcome. Fee £2. We meet at 2pm at St Charles Meeting Room followed by tea and biscuits. Any enquiries to Sylvia 32215.

Grange and District U3A
A busy period for the outdoor interest groups: the geology group resumed activities with a field trip to Lindale, the walking groups have been to the Lancaster fells, Orrest Head the Silverdale peninsula and School Knott, the cyclists have been to Low Furness and completed a hilly circuit of the lower Lancaster fells from Halton (battery powered bikes were prominent) and the birdwatchers visited Marshside, Heysham and Ravenstown/Sandgate. Our Local Explorer group visited Conishead Priory in October and is planning a trip to Hawkshead in November. The ‘building based’ U3A groups have resumed their activities, some after a summer break, whilst the bowling group approaches the winter shutdown. The U3A autumn social programme has been prepared and includes a film night at the Heron Theatre on 4 December and an afternoon at the Heron theatre on 6 December following a successful cabaret evening in the Victoria Hall in October. Our monthly general meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month in the Victoria Hall where all are welcome to hear presentations from a variety of speakers. Our creative members won 23 awards at the Westmorland County Show in September. Here they are with some of the prize winning entries. At our last meeting Sue Oliver gave a very interesting talk on her life as a Registrar. We were surprised to learn that the Register Service covers a lot more than recording births, marriages and deaths. It covers changing your name, immigration checks, civil partnership ceremonies, renewing vows and even more services. Sue had lots of humorous tales to reveal and it proved a very entertaining evening. On 27 November we will be holding a creative workshop – making our own festive decorations.

The opening lecture of the new season was given on 14th October by the distinguished former Reith Lecturer Professor Tom Kirkwood of Newcastle University whose subject was ‘Why and how are we living longer?’ With the help of various graphs and other graphics, he showed how life expectancy continues to increase worldwide profoundly affecting the lives of individuals and societies, discussed the science behind the ageing process, and revealed the extent of our scientific understanding of this steady increase in longevity, which was arguably one of humanity’s greatest successes and had taken governments and other agencies by surprise. On 11th November Ellie and Ian

The October Meeting was an Open Meeting and some visitors joined us for a talk called “Stobart Group-The History. From Cumbrian Family Business to UK Superbrand” given by Kate Willard, Colette Butterworth and Matthew Beresford. Trucks are only a small part of the business now which also includes Rail Freight, Aviation and Biomass Energy Fuels. They own Southend and Carlisle Airports..The trucking part of the business has a fan club of spotters numbering over 20,000, ticking off the ladies` names on 3000 trucks. The trucks “die” and are renewed every 3 years. The evening started with a Photo-shoot of members to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Witherslack WI. Unfortunately several members were away and so are not pictured for posterity. The photographer was Ken Etteridge. Tilly van Rees was presented with a certificate for her 30 year`s membership. Nominations for next year`s committee were taken. Janet Read, on behalf of the vicar, made a plea for help from the WI in compiling a collection of anecdotes and tales from the past to raise money for the church. Is there any event that you would like to see us put on? Any suggestions would be welcome. This is your hall, and the saying is “use it or lose it”. We are always on the lookout for fresh ideas/input.
Grange Rotary
Grange Rotarians are involved in several exciting projects. One of our members has started a ’50 Club’ to raise extra funds and anyone wishing to participate can contact Rotarian John Biddlestone, via the Netherwood Hotel. Our major community event this year was a Prostate Awareness Day, which was held on16th October at the Victoria Hall, in partnership with our local health authority. On 8th October we hosted a district International Meeting for Rotarians from neighbouring clubs. We have recently contributed funds to a Sand Dam Project. These dams
hold water in areas where they have long periods of drought. Not only are the people able to extract water when required but the sand also filters it and makes it fit to drink. We wish to give a big thank you to all those Grange residents who responded to our appeal for baby clothes. Our very special thanks to the Tracy at the Keg and Kitchen and Vibe Hairdressers who have been collection points for these clothes that will added to Aquaboxes, which are sent to people in other parts of the world who are suffering from natural disasters or the effects of war and provide essential items and clean drinking water. You may have seen an example at the September PromArt. For further information go to http:// www.aquabox.org/.
Local History Society
On 3 October, Susan Allen, from the Wordsworth Trust, gave a talk on Dorothy Wordsworth. Susan explained how in the last 30 to 40 years Dorothy has become a person of interest, especially her significance within the Romantic Movement.Susan concentrated on the 8 years that the Wordsworths lived at Dove Cottage and the domestic scene there which included many visitors such as Coleridge, de Quincey and Sir Walter Scott. As the Wordsworths struggled financially, Dorothy alongside William’s wife and daughter, would strive to write out William’s poetry and prose to get it published and bring in money. Susan quoted from Dorothy’s Grasmere journals which described landscapes, the natural world, long walks and included private thoughts. Her forceful views and opinions came through and she was described as intelligent, impressive and a good listener with both de Quincey and Coleridge using the word ‘ardent’ when talking of her. Dorothy appeared to be different things to different people. Her writing was clear and lyrical and at a time of great changes in British society, her journals, poems and letters are not only a testament to her own intellect but an insight into the movements and changes around her in that period. Susan brought many books with her and the large audience asked some intriguing questions.
COFFEE CLUB
In September, we welcomed, as speakers, members from our local Gideons who explained that although Furness is a relatively small group they are part of an international organisation covering nearly 200 countries seeking to make the Bible, the Word of God, available as widely as possible. Gideons began in 1889 when a bored American commercial traveller decided with a colleague to introduce Bibles into hotels as an easily available reading matter containing sections of advice on where to look for help in various differing times of need. Today Gideons distribute scriptures in hospitals, hotels, prisons, and universities and colleges. For example in UK over 50,000 testaments are given to university students and 600,000 to school children annually. Our speakers told us of many people whose lives
had been permanently changed through receiving and then studying the books they had received. For example, many have found peace reading Ps 46 v10 ‘Be still and know that I am God’. We were very grateful for their fascinating presentation. On November 18th João Pedro, from Brazil, will tell how he uses Street and Hip-hop Dance for Jesus in Japan. All welcome at Abbot Hall at 10.30am preceded by coffee at 10am.
Grange Lions
On the 5th of October Grange and District Lions club held their 35th Charter Lunch at The Grange Hotel. Members and their families and friends from other Lions clubs in the area attended and a good meal was enjoyed by all. The Civic Mayor of Grange, Councillor Thomas and Vice District Govenor Mike Bagnall gave excellent speeches as did Lion President Peter Clough and Vice President David Stubbins. Once again we managed to make it a fairly informal occasion and fun for all. Our thanks go to The Grange Hotel for making us welcome again. At our October business meeting it was voted to give £100 to Flooks 4 Youth. This popular Youth club in Flookburgh is struggling financially at present and unable to accommodate all the children that it would like to. One of the aims of Grange Lions is to help young people in the area with grants to help continue youth services such as this.
Grange Ramblers
On Thursday 18th September, a group of 8 enjoyed beautiful weather and clear views along Troutbeck Valley and round the back of the Tongue, starting from Troutbeck Church Bridge. At lunch we were treated to a large flock of shorn Herdwick sheep being herded back onto the fells and our return route passed through Limefitt Park. The 7.5 miles walk was led by Irene Allan. On October 15th, fifteen of us started from the Lindale Inn walking north under the A590 turning left shortly after to negotiate Wilson Hills, the bridleway to the Winster river and onward passing Nichols Wood farm. Continuing on the minor road but ignoring the turn to Slate Hill, we climbed up through the wood to the cross-paths at Halecat and turning south then left later through to Longhowe End and Latterbarrow, where we had lunch. Afterwards, we carried on past the Derby Arms and under the A590 again to follow the roads round Meathop Moss to Meathop returning to Lindale via Low Meathop. The
easy 9 miler was led by Tony Harrison. Grange Ramblers A.G.M. will be held on Thursday 13th November at the United Reformed Church Hall 1:30 for 2:00pm. Come along and have your say.

We also have a talented artist, Diana Merrick who runs classes with the involvement of Life models so think about enrolling on her Portraiture Drawing class, starting 12th Nov for 6 weeks. We have a 7 week course run by Dr Janet Eccles, entitled Religion and Personal Life, starting Nov 4th. One has only to look at religious tensions across the world to realise that religion is hugely important and this course will deal with various personal issues around birth, sexuality, women, family, marriage and death and ask to what extent can and should religion play a part in these issues.
