Plans to bring Premier Inn to Ulverston moved a step closer in January as the planning application to convert the derelict Winder’s abattoir site on North Lonsdale Terrace into a new 79-bedroom Premier Inn hotel was submitted to South Lakeland District Council. The final submitted scheme benefitted from positive engagement right through the design process – from Planning Officers at the Council to local people – which Premier Inn are extremely grateful for. The draft plans were presented at a well-attended public exhibition in December and were well received by the vast majority of the attendees. There were positive remarks on a range of issues including the need to redevelop the unattractive site, the economic boost that will come from the hotel and the benefits of the 30 new team member jobs on opening.

The engagement also influenced the final submitted designs. At the exhibition a number of people commented that the Premier Inn should make more of the canal side location and introduce an outside seating area for their guests and restaurant customers. They have also introduced additional disabled car parking spaces which many people wanted to see.

in the North Lonsdale Road. The amended proposal has however been through a safety audit. In addition the Town Council is also awaiting the outcome of a traffic audit. Should the scheme be granted planning consent, work will begin with building the hotel later this year with a planned opening date in the second half of next year (2017).

MARCH 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 8 APRIL th

Ulverston Community Policing Team Ulverston Police Station closed in October 2015 and Police Officers have been deployed from the new Barrow Police Station since. The Community Policing Team are based in Ulverston and the ‘Police Desk’ is open at Coronation Hall between 9am-12noon Monday-Friday. Police are urging all cyclists in Ulverston and Furness to be aware that footpaths are for pedestrians. Any rider over the age of 16 years found cycling on a footway/pavement can receive a £50 fine by the issue of a ticket. The police are receiving regular complaints and are speaking to cyclists when seen but it seems that the message is not getting through. If you wish to travel by cycle as opposed to on foot, please use the road and not the pavement. Cyclists must also be mindful of

the fact that the rules governing car drivers are equally applicable to cyclists: cyclists cannot ignore red traffic lights, cyclists cannot cycle the wrong way down a one way street to name two of regularly the observed offences. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call 101 (999 in an emergency) or call into the Coronation Hall. Visit www.cumbria.police.uk for information and advice pages.

A brief word from our M.P.

We are regularly told that because people are living longer we will have to work a bit longer before retirement. But for a whole body of women born in the 1950s, the news that their state pension is withheld for a few more years has come as a shock. I met with a group of Furness women last week who have been affected by this. They have joined the National Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign and they make a really powerful case. Some of these women entered the world of full-time labour as early as their mid-teens. From playing a key role in South Cumbria's big industries, to carrying out vital work in the communities, to toiling away in the relentless world of retail, and so much more, they have poured their hearts and souls into their professional lives. Now, when they should be looking forward to enjoying a well-earned retirement, they are faced with financial uncertainty. Carefully-made retirement plans have been thrown into disarray by these sudden changes. Women in Furness and far beyond are left in the arguably impossible position of not being able to return to work, but not being eligible for a pension.

After my meeting I attended the debate in the House of Commons and heard a government minister saying that women should claim Jobseekers Allowance instead of the pension they are entitled to.

This is no way to treat people who have worked hard all their lives for their pension. The government has made a mistake and it should not be left for scores of women in Furness and others like them across the country to pick up the tab. John Woodcock MP

Separation and Children One of the biggest issues for separating couples is agreeing arrangements for the children of the relationship to spend time with both of their parents and how those arrangements can be agreed and managed. Most parents recognise that the children have a right to spend time with both parents and that it is up to the parents to reach an agreement to make this happen. In the majority of cases parents do manage to reach an agreement themselves or with the help of their solicitors. Unfortunately, there are some cases where parents are in dispute and in cases like this the parents are always best advised to seek independent mediation which can help them to reach an agreement by understanding each other’s point of view and what is best for their children. Very often mediation resolves disputes more quickly, amicably and at far less expense than a court hearing. Where mediation is unsuccessful, as a last resort an application can be made to the court. The court will make the decision for the parents and both parents will be bound by the Child Arrangements Order that the court makes. This will say which parent the children will live with and when they will spend time with the other parent. If matters go this far it is likely that each parent will have incurred significant legal costs. Progression Solicitors offer a free half hour appointment for advice on divorce, finances and children issues. Appointments can be arranged with our specialist solicitors Lisa Martin and Janett Walker at our legal surgeries held at our Windermere office each Thursday or our Grange office every other Wednesday or in Ulverston by appointment.

‘Make or break’ year ahead The coming year will be ‘make or break’ for Ulverston as we know it, according to the Ulverston Community Enterprises Board which is working to secure the future of the Coronation Hall and the town’s markets.

The Board is still in the process of ironing out the details of financial arrangements with South Lakeland District Council and both sides are working hard to reach a deal fair for both South Lakes Council Tax Payers and Ulverston citizens. SLDC is allocating £100,000 within its 2016-2017 capital programme for the Coronation Hall, and that money will be made available to the UCE for maintaining and improving the hall. David Sykes, director of people and places at SLDC said: "What we are doing is making budget provisions so that when UCE take on the hall we would be able to provide some funding for them to make improvements." Ulverston Community Enterprises is on track to take over the running of the Coronation Hall later this year. But Board chairman Judith Pickthall warns that there will be no quick fix for achieving the major objectives laid out by the board, including saving the Coronation Hall for future generations, and revitalising the indoor and outdoor markets. Judith explains: “The board members are all volunteers and are all committed to getting the job done. But we can’t do it alone.” “We are working constructively with SLDC and are confident that we can reach an agreement that

UCE Board Chairman Judith Pickthall

works for both sides. The capital budget allocation demonstrates their willingness to help us achieve our aims. “We hope people will be patient while we put in place the groundwork for Ulverston Community Enterprises to get up and running as a business – a big business, which potentially will be handling budgets involving hundreds of thousands of pounds. We are progressing as fast as we can, but nothing is going to happen overnight.” “Over the coming months we will organise public consultations to explain our plans to people, and we also want them to bring along their own ideas of what they want for Ulverston over the next five, ten or fifty years. We will also be getting together with organisations within the town to get their views and their support.”

Ulverston firm named as UK Accountants of the year Ulverston accountants J F Hornby & Co are in dreamland after being named UK accountants of the year at the British Accountancy Awards. The event which rewards excellence in the profession was held at the Brewery in London and was hosted by comedian Rufus Hound. The firm had been short listed in the northern section of independent firm of the year and after winning their category were automatically entered with the other regional winners for the national award. The judges said Hornby’s had created a unique approach to accountancy and their work in tax deserved special recognition. They also commented their involvement with good causes made them a vital part of the local community. Managing Director Paul Hornby said it was an incredible honour just to be nominated and a

fantastic achievement to win the northern section, but to be crowned best in the UK was an unbelievable accolade. He dedicated the win to the incredible team he works with. He said this award is their award for the hard work and dedication they demonstrate every day. At Hornby’s we are one big happy family and this shines through to the clients we deal with. Rather than sit on their laurels the firm are now busy planning for an exciting 2016 which includes the creation of an Accountancy Academy. Director Tom Southward is working with schools and colleges in the area getting ready for the 2016/17 academic year. He commented "by retaining outstanding skills in this area we can offer an alternative to University where we can provide a vocational type of training but which gives a world renowned professional qualification."

Sky’s the limit After starting out at Furness General Hospital, as a volunteer for Radio Lonsdale, Stephen Dixon is now one of a handful of presenters at Sky who has his own show, ‘Sunrise with Stephen Dixon’. I had the pleasure of interviewing him for this, our launch edition, and found him to be extremely pleasant, unassuming and fiercely proud of his roots. He’s a northerner and more than happy to say so. Born in Newton in Furness, Stephen (41) attended Ulverston Victoria High School every Friday evening to play violin with Furness Youth Orchestra, was a volunteer with St John’s Ambulance and worked every Saturday in ‘Rumblin Tum’ cafe [now an Indian restaurant]. Stephen and elder brother, Richard, who still lives, and works, in the area, both attended Dowdales School.

It was while attending Barrow Sixth Form, 16 year old Stephen began to volunteer at Radio Lonsdale. He told us: “I was

able to have that. I don’t live in London, so I have to be up in time to drive down there. I go through the papers and get in the seat just 30 seconds before the programme starts”.

When he’s not getting up in the middle of the night to do his show, I asked what would be his ‘perfect day’.

really interested in how it all worked. It may be hospital radio but the set up is exactly the same as any other radio station”. Stephen went on to study Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham Trent University.

He told me: “I attended the first year of what was the very first undergraduate course in Broadcast Journalism in the country. While I was there (‘92 - ‘95) I volunteered at Trent FM, where I continued to work after I finished University.” Less than a year after graduating, he was headhunted by ITN in London to produce ITV morning news, before being tempted away by the launch of Five news.

In 2000, Stephen started working for Sky News, as their overnight anchor on ‘Sky News on the hour’. Sixteen years later, he is still there: “I love working for Sky”, he told me, “nobody does rolling news better, so I can’t imagine moving anywhere else. I’m doing a job that I love, you can’t ask for more than that.’ ‘Sunrise with Stephen Dixon’, is currently Sky’s highest rating news programme. With his show starting at 6am, I asked what time he has to get up:

“2.45am” he answered, in a far more cheery tone than I would have done, “but it’s okay because I love what I do. My job is great fun and it’s great to be

“I love coming up to the Lakes and spending time with the family, and catching up with old friends. So my perfect day would have to be there. It would start out on Coniston, at 6am, in a canoe, while the mist is still hanging over the water. It’s truly beautiful and so calm and quiet. I do this quite often with my brother. Then breakfast would be made on a small gas stove at the edge of the Lake. Then I would head over to Cartmel and go out on a Segway and then back over to Ulverston to the World Peace Cafe for lunch. I love that place and always go. I’m a vegetarian and I know I can order absolutely anything on the menu and enjoy it. Then, possibly a walk before heading back home for some of Mum’s homemade cooking”.

A cracking good time but new venue needed

The Furness Firecrackers Roller Derby League, based in Barrow, was formed in 2011.

The club, with around 60 members, had an amazingly successful year in 2015. Both the men’s team, The Barrow Infernos and the ladies A team, The Crackers, gained promotion in their tiers of The British Championships. The club also sent 5 skaters to play for the British national teams in the roller derby World Cup in Calgary, Canada.

Not to be outdone, the ladies B team, The Flaming Noras came second in a Sur5al tournament, and members of the referee and official’s squad took part in sanctioned games all over the UK. These fantastic achievements happened despite the club having

ongoing problems finding a suitable training venue.

A committee member from the club said, “The venue we have at the moment is around one third of the size we need, it’s far from ideal“

At a recent visit by MP John Woodcock, who donned a pair of skates and took on the persona “Labour Pain #10”, the club has gained more support in it’s quest for a more suitable venue.

Can you help them? They need an area of approximately 110ft x 80ft with a polished concrete, wood or tiled floor. Sports halls, warehouses or similar could be suitable. Contact the Firecrackers to discuss rates and suitability - or if you fancy putting your skates on furnessrollerderby@ gmail.com

Reasons to make your Will this month 56% of people that died in the UK died without leaving a Will.

If you die ‘intestate’ (without a Will), your estate is divided up according to rules enforced by government which could mean family, friends & charities miss out completely. Making a Will with Livingstons ensures your estate is distributed according to your wishes. Why do I need Livingstons' help? Beware of a low cost DIY Will or an internet Will because saving

a few pounds now may cost you and your loved ones thousands in the future.

A small mistake could lead to your Will being contested or at worst it may be invalid. Using a solicitor is the only method of ensuring your Will is valid under English law and this month we’re offering a special 10% discount if you call Deborah Yearnshire or Helen Scott-Parker on Ulverston (01229) 585555 or Dalton (01229) 462126 before March 31st. info@ulverstonnow.co.uk

CHURCH NEWS

What's coffee got to do with it? Whilst topping up the coffee beans in Re:Vista Coffee Shop my thoughts are interrupted by the news informing the country of the latest crisis our world faces. This crisis is one that sees millions of people displaced. Lives changed forever not from choice but by external enforcement; leave or die. We don't see these things here in the UK however we have troubles of our own; homelessness, addiction, unwillingness to get involved in the tough circumstances of each other's lives, someone you love making bad choices, again, loneliness, hopeless situations,

we all know someone who is hurting.

My focus switches back to the task at hand with passion and conviction - I serve our next customer their favourite coffee and full English breakfast, knowing that by the grace of God I am making a difference each week. I choose to get involved, to love even when it looks hopeless, I also know that every coffee poured in Re:Vista is helping the present world crisis through the charities and missions we support, as well as the work we do locally as a charity here at Emmanuel Christian Centre Ulverston.

‘Love-in’ brings together Festival & Events organisers More than 40 festival and event organisers and volunteers came together for the first time at Ford Park in Ulverston to share their knowledge and commitment to stage great events in the town. The Ulverston Festivals and Events ‘Love-In’ aimed to encourage greater co-operation and collaboration between the various groups and organisations responsible for the activities which attract tens of thousands of people to the town each year. It was an opportunity to exchange information, create

new relationships and give everyone there the latest information on Ulverston Town Council grants, Ulverston Community Enterprises, Ulverston BID funding, the Coronation Hall and the Markets. There was also the opportunity to sample some of the award winning cakes produced by the catering team at Ford Park, which hosted the event. The ‘Love-In’ a great initiative co-ordinated by Jayne Kendall, (Clerk to Ulverston Town Council) said: “The turnout was excellent with just about every event in the town represented.”

ART & MUSIC

Send in your arts and music news info@ulverstonnow.co.uk Just 17 years old but already Jess Gillam is making her mark on the music world. She has reached the category finals of the BBC Young Musician of Year competition (Woodwind). On reaching the final Jess said: “ I am delighted. The competition is a brilliant platform and I can’t wait to compete.”

influences and origins. Other concerts in Cumbria this year include: a solo recital at the Ulverston International Music Festival in June. I became the Young Ambassador for the Festival last year and gave a solo performance to a sold out Coronation Hall!

The category finals will take place on 6-10 March at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with the semi-final on 13 March 2016. Ulverston Now caught up with Jess to find out a bit more about this incredibly talented young musician:

“I am from Ulverston, I attended Ulverston Victoria High School and my parents run Gillam’s Tearoom on Market Street.

Q

Do you come from a musical family?

My dad is a drummer and was in a successful band called TC:Hug when he was younger but my mum isn’t musical at all. My younger sister, Patsy, who is 13, plays clarinet and bass guitar. She has played clarinet in the National Children’s Orchestra for three years and she is also in a band called “Pesky” who have a record deal with Fierce Panda (who signed Placebo and Coldplay) and have been interviewed live on BBC Breakfast and have had radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 and FM!

Q

Where did your love of music and, in particular, the saxophone first originate? When I was 7, my dad was teaching drums at the Barracudas Arts Centre in Barrow. There were drumming workshops, stilts, dance and saxophone and I thought it would be a good idea to try the saxophone! I picked it up and tried it and have loved it ever since. I started taking lessons when I was 9 and then began studying at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester when I was 13.

Q

Apart from ‘Young Musician of the Year’ what else are you doing this year? I am playing at the Victoria Hall in Grange over Sands on Friday 18th March. I will be performing as a student of the Junior RNCM. Percussionist Elliott Gaston-Ross (BBC Young Musician 2014 Finalist) will also be performing and we will be accompanied by David Jones, the deputy head of the Junior RNCM and Head of Accompanying at the RNCM. There will be a diverse range of music with many kinds of

In July last year, I was the youngest solo performer at the World Saxopohone Congress in Strasbourg and for my performance, I commissioned music from three of the country's leading saxophonists - Barbara Thompson (composer of the music to "A Touch of Frost" , Rob Buckland (professor of saxophone at the RNCM) and John Harle (composer of music to "Silent Witness" and has sold over half a million records as a saxophonist). I also composed my own piece which incorporates a poem by local poet and artist John Ruskin entitled "Night". I will perform these pieces at Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, on Thursday 14th April. In December, I will also be performing as a concerto soloist with the acclaimed Lakeland Sinfonia in Kendal.

Q

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? I would love to have a solo performance career and I would love to be performing concertos, collaborating with other musicians and playing music across the world!

Local artists scoop top prizes in talent competition Local performers took two out of three top prizes in the Charity Stars talent competition organised by Furness Building Society in conjunction with the Bay Radio, on a night which saw good causes across the North West receive more than £3,000. Chris Barker (25) won £1000 for the CAST Theatre Company in Barrow while Rebecca Williams (16) from Walney, won £500 for Barrow Vision Support Centre, which helps blind and partially sighted people across south Cumbria. Chris stunned the judges and the audience with his powerhouse delivery of ‘The Impossible Dream’ but was matched note for note by Rebecca whose song combined opera, jazz and musical theatre-style.

Chris was delighted with the cash boost for CAST which works to encourage disabled young people and others facing challenges to become involved in theatre productions. Chris also wins the opportunity to be a ‘Star for a Day at the Bay’ with a session of video recordings and interviews at the station in Lancaster. Rebecca, who is a pupil at Walney High School, first became involved with her nominated charity as a ten year old after winning a national poetry reading competition. Since then she has been a regular visitor to Ostley House which is supported by Barrow Vision. The show was hosted by The Bay Breakfast Show presenter Danny Matthews.

Xander and the Peace Pirates

If you haven’t been to a blues festival before, why not dip your toe in the water by getting a one-day ticket for Bowness Bay Blues? The Friday programme will begin with a relaxing acoustic set from guitarist Tommy Allen and Danish bass player Emil Engstrom. They will be followed by Scottish bluesman Al Hughes, who plays harmonica and guitar, though his voice is often singled out as the keystone of his sound. It has a haunting, smoky quality that conveys a huge variety of moods, from gentle and wistful to raucous and raging. Next on the bill will be the incredible Xander and the Peace Pirates, fronted by Keith Xander, who was born without a right hand and plays the guitar using a plectrum held in a split metal hook. The Pirates hail from Liverpool and have had a five-year residency at the iconic Cavern Club. They have opened for many big names, including Bon Jovi, Buddy Guy and Joe Bonamassa. The day tickets are amazing value – at only £15 for Friday 18th March, £35 for Saturday 19th or £25 for Sunday 20th (available from the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal).

The festival opener on June 8th heralds the welcome return of English Touring Opera to the Coronation Hall, followed by the mesmerising vocalist Julia Biel. The vocal theme continues with a ’Barbershop’ quartet, the multi awardwinning “Reckless”. The opening weekend ends on a high with Ulverston’s very own star saxophonist Jess Gillam. MARCH 17 TH • KENDAL TOWN HALL MARCH 18 TH • KENDAL LEISURE CENTRE

RENOWNED Ulverston artist Stefan Orlowski won the Lynn Painter-Stainers young artist of the year award in 2008, only a year after finishing his fine art studies at Aberystwyth University of Wales. Today, just seven years on, he has been shortlisted for another Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize - one of the UK's celebrated competitions for representational painting. Stefan is a dedicated oil painter whose works have been showcased across England, and of course, they have also been on display in the North; in Abbot Hall and The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal. Soon after completing his masters at Wimbledon College of Art he was grateful for the opportunity of spending three months at the Trelex Residency in the west of Switzerland to explore a new found interest, painting landscapes. His experience of solitude, working privacy, practical help and critical dialogue with other artists enabled him to explore this new appeal in a setting

NATURE & WILDLIFE

New warden to restore habitats across Furness

Hedgehogs in March March is really the start of the Hedgehog year. Hedgehogs, however, like lots of other wildlife, are in rapid decline. There are a number of factors that have led to this decline including walled in gardens, the widespread use of slug pellets, the decline of food sources and being culled in parts of Scotland.

Hedgehogs are called ‘The Gardeners’ Friend’ because they eat slugs and other pests. If you have them around your garden, there are a list of things that you can do to keep them safe and encourage them to hang about.

How To Attract Hedgehogs In Your Garden Give Them Access

They can roam about a mile a night in search of food, so they need access in and out of your garden. Don’t Use Slug Pellets

And encourage your neighbours not to. Invest in a tub of sheep’s wool pellets. Wool fibres are very hygroscopic when combined with sand and grit. This causes irritation to the slug which will soon head off looking for easier feeding methods. This means healthy slugs for the hedgehogs. Feed Them And Give Them Water

You can leave food and water about in little shallow dishes. Here are some of the things that hedgehogs like to eat:

Cat food, Hedgehog food (ground up peanuts and sunflower hearts and dried meal worms) Nuts and seeds, Boiled or mashed potatoes, Cat biscuits, Mealworms, Never give them bread or milk. Be A Bit Wild Leave wild areas in the garden for them to gather bits and pieces to make a home or hide under. Make A Hedgehog Home You can buy ready made hedgehog homes, or you can make your own using what you’ve got lying around. An upturned plastic dog bed is perfect. Just put some straw underneath it. Fleeces make great insulation too. Avoid Drowning Opportunities Make sure that any ponds or water traps have sloping sides so that if they do fall in they can climb out. Don’t Kill Them By Accident Hedgehogs love compost bins, bonfire piles and long grass. So be careful with forks, matches and strimmers. Check before taking action. Dogs can also be a threat, so try to keep dogs away from hedgehog habitats.

Good luck!

If you visit www.hedgehogstreet.org you will find for more information about joining up gardens in order to help hedgehogs roaming at night. If you find a sick or injured hedgehog please contact Irene Cannon, Furness Hedgehog Rescue on 01229 464829.

Sarah Dalrymple is settling into her stunning new home as the new warden for Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s South Walney Nature Reserve. The warden post is thanks to funding from the WREN Biodiversity Action Fund which was secured by Morecambe Bay Partnership and Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and includes a raft of habitat improvement works at nature reserves in the Furness area. Sarah is responsible for caring for the wildlife habitats, supporting the many excellent existing volunteers and ensuring visitors to the nature reserve get the most out of their visit.

Previously Sarah has worked on several islands and nature reserves, including Skokholm Island in Pembrokeshire, Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, and, most recently, helped conduct a seabird survey on the remote St Kilda Isles, 80 miles off coast of west Scotland. The new warden will also be working on habitat improvements at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Foulney Island Nature Reserve and Natural England’s North Walney National Nature Reserve. At South Walney this will fund scrape creation for birds, habitat restoration to create flower-rich dune grassland and the development of new infrastructure to manage grazing. Works will also allow for a better visitor experience near the nature reserve’s entrance. On Foulney Island, it is hoped that breeding areas can be extended for terns and other birds away from the ravages of the tide.

The pups which were born on the Island in November have now fully moulted the white fur that they were born with and are able to swim and feed independently of their mothers. It is encouraging that seals are pupping in the local area and using the islands off the Furness Peninsula. Seals may bite

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is advising people not to disturb young seals that may appear on local beaches at this time of year. Young seals, up to a few months old, are appearing on local beaches from their birthing grounds on South Walney Nature Reserve, elsewhere in the Irish Sea or further afield. Over the next few months, beach-goers may come across young seals on the beach while they rest before returning to the sea to hunt. Marine Conservation Officer Dr Emily Baxter says: "It can cause a problem as people often do not realise that seals need to come up onto the beaches to rest. There is a misconception that they are sick when they are more than likely just resting or sleeping."

Circle Dancing Hound trailing is a traditional Cumbrian sport that's been around for over a 100 years. If you have not seen or even heard of hound trails then it's well worth a visit to one. The hounds are exceptional athletes that compete in trails over various terrain including fells and fields. The older hounds run 10 miles and the pups 5 miles.

We have March trials coming up which commence on the 1st of March. Normally the start of the season for the championship is on 1st April but due to Easter being early this year, the championships will start Easter Saturday. Information for the venues can be found on the official hound trailing association website www.houndtrailing.org.uk

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Winter Newsletter. The last few months have been a stream of fun with lots of visits from entertainers and interesting activities taking place. October

November

Early October was warm and sunny and we took advantage to take a few residents and family members out for afternoon tea at the Netherwood Hotel. They put on a great spread.

We had an action packed month. The residents continued making all the Christmas ornaments and crafts, put up two trees, decorated them and filled the whole Old Vicarage with all their craftwork. Its not Christmas without carols and several residents went to Flookburgh Church for a beautiful service. The singing group, Playing for Fun, came to The Old Vicarage and entertained us with a brilliant concert. The children from Allithwaite Montessori came and performed Watching the fireworks their Christmas play. They were after burning the Guy adorable and the residents loved it. It may have been wet for the rest of the month, but we made the most of it with a wide range of arts and crafts, including making lots of different Halloween decorations, carving pumpkins, creating lanterns for Bonfire Night and of course making a Guy Fawkes. Some of the residents also went out to Cartmel Village Hall for a Singing for the Brain Concert. We had vintage music singer Becki Fishwick visiting at the end of the month. She is very talented and we definitely want to see her again.

The month began with our annual bonfire night and fireworks party, surrounded by friends and family with lots of hot food and cakes. Everyone loved the lanterns the residents made.

Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group Easter Egg Trail! The Easter Egg Trail is just round the corner and we would love you to be part of it. We already have over 30 businesses signed up to decorate an egg this year and are aiming to get over 60 large eggs along the towpath. Local businesses have been so generous with their donations, that we have been able to offer each school and club 1 free egg. An “egg” is cut from plywood and then decorated, in any way you wish. We then place them along the tow path, where they can be enjoyed and admired.

As well as the big eggs, everyone is welcome to make small decorated eggs on wooden spoons. They were a great success last year that gave much pleasure to hundreds of people visiting the Canal. Contact 07720 712 928 or via our facebook page. info@ulverstonnow.co.uk
