JUNE 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 10 JUNE th

Brave knights, distressed damsels, heinous henchmen and decidedly cuddly dragons were all there in Ulverston on Saturday 23rd April to delight shoppers and visitors with the annual St George’s Day pageant. It was also the first day of the Flag Festival fortnight, so the town was garlanded with colourful silks of every shade to form the perfect backdrop to the mock medieval fun and games.Ralph Spours, chair of the Traders’ Association

who led the Ulverston St George’s Day pageant players commented: “With all the flags in place the town looks fantastic and it forms the perfect curtain-raiser to a spring and summer of events, festivals and markets.” More than 200 flags were put in place around the town – each one an individual design to reflect a business or shop, or some other aspect of the town. They remained on show until May 8th. The Flag Festival traditionally marks the start of the Festival season in Ulverston.

Underground Overground No, we are not talking about the Wombles of Wimbledon Common, but the extensive improvements to the Town Beck walls and culverts being undertaken at several locations across Ulverston. It was fascinating to participate in the history of Ulverston’s waterways as part of Walk Fest, on Wednesday 27th April. Our guide, Jean Povey, undeterred by hail and wind, outlined the course of Town Beck and enlightened us about probably the most important invention in Ulverston’s past; the sluice gate. It’s in the field beyond the wooded section behind the Gill and was only replaced eight years ago. Opening this gate diverts water beside Old Hall Road, along the back gardens of Garden Terrace, into the no longer existing Mill Dam Pond and under the water wheels of various breweries and mills of the town. It is known as the Mill Race and was the source of power for much of Ulverston’s historic industry. Originally, the water courses would have been open but over time they have been spanned by wooden bridges to ease their crossing and later by slate, stone and more latterly by concrete and tarmac. So today, because some of the becks and races of the town run underground, renovation involves specialists delving into the murks of the shallow covered culverts to assess repairs required and then to carry them out. It is not an inexpensive project. The tender was accepted at £2.6million but now the extent of the work is more evident that estimate has risen significantly. When we reached the Gill we were introduced to Jake, of JBA Bentley construction (the main contractor), who explained the need to maintain and upgrade Ulverston’s flood defences. Ulverston has a history of flooding but the most recent took place in 2009 and 2012 when Town Beck burst its banks affecting the town centre. “The Ulverston Town Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme is a partnership between the Environment Agency, Cumbria County Council and Network Rail to reduce the risk of flooding to 290

Come and see our exciting residential and 74 commercial properties from Town Beck. “Construction of the flood alleviation scheme will include; raising existing flood defence walls, installation of new floodgates at The Gill and Beckside Court, repairing and refurbishing the underground watercourse (culvert) as well as building a flood storage area in the natural floodplain with a flow control structure which will restrict the high flood flows to ensure that there is no increase to flood risk in South Ulverston.” After carrying out a confined space survey in January 2016, the contractors identified a collapsed arch in the culvert carrying the Town Beck underneath the Brewery Street Car Park. They advised SLDC to restrict access in that vicinity. Jake explained that the works will continue into 2017 resulting in the Town Beck flood defence being ready for a 1 in a 100 year event. However, the culvert work can only be as good as some of the structures to which they are attached, which have existed since their beginnings at the turn of the last century. In those cases, they will be good for a 1 in 10 year event. Most of the work being carried out will not even be seen, due to its underground location. Whatever takes place above ground will also be concealed by facing the strengthening concrete walls in stone in keeping with Ulverston’s conservation area. It is hoped that the natural habitats of the Town Beck waterway will not be adversely affected in the long term by recreating the original flow, fast in some places and slower patches as can be seen further upstream. Further information and visualisations are given on the partnership’s website www.townbecks.co.uk together with a webcam of the work being undertaken at the Ellers.

Objections were raised to the original plans, not necessarily on principle since the site was allocated for development in the South Lakeland Local Plan, but because of the building design, which was branded by one town councillor as ‘ugly beyond belief’. A meeting between Cumbria County Council, which is financing the Hub, town councillors, the Civic Society and the architects resulted in an alternative design and a finish more in keeping with the approach to Ulverston. At a time when budgets for the emergency services are stretched, Cumbria County Council has been successful in receiving a grant of £4.6 million from the Department for Communities and Local

Government to build the Hub, described as a ‘co-located emergency response centre with community facilities’. The current Fire Station on the Ellers will close, as will the Ambulance facilities on Victoria Road, so that the Cumbria Fire and Rescue and the North West Ambulance Service will now be together. There will also be meeting rooms for the community to use, and new traffic lights will manage traffic in and out of the Hub. What the police presence at the Hub will be is less clear as we go to press. Since the closure of Ulverston Police Station there has been an office in Coniston House on New Market Street for a sergeant and the Police Community Support Officers, and a police desk in the Coronation Hall from 9.00 am until 12 noon on weekdays. When we know whether/when these services are going to move to the Hub, we will let you know.

Canal Regeneration Gathers Pace Beautiful new flags were flying at Canal Foot during April’s Flag Festival, marking another step towards the Canal Regeneration Group’s vision of the canal as a welcoming attraction for visitors and an improved amenity for the people of Ulverston.

Proving how far it has come already, the volunteer litterpickers in the recent Spring Clean-Up found much less rubbish than in previous years, and were even able to do some work around the rolling bridge, an important piece of engineering history.

More changes are in the pipeline for the summer. After fund-raising and successfully applying for a grant from Groundwork, the group held a consultation on what people would like to see, and the proposed works have now been given planning permission. These will include sculptures showing the development of the canal and its history, and new signing along the canal with more directions for routes around the area. While improvements to the rolling bridge area and Canal Head are also envisaged in the future,

SPORTS & LEISURE Jonathan Clutterbuck and his wife Caroline are adding another spoke to their wheel of business.

All aboard the Bike Station!

After 5 successful years running Cyclewright, their mobile bike repair service operating throughout South Lakes, they are beginning a new adventure. Following months of planning, obtaining permissions, supported by local councillors and residents, they are finally crossing the finishing line in realising their goal. First Group have completed the renovation work to the derelict Grade II listed Water Tower and Northern Rail, who own the once overgrown building, are about to sign the lease agreement. I refer, of course, to the brand new café and cycle hub located at Ulverston Railway Station. Caroline said, “We are really looking forward to the prospect. It has been quite a challenge and will be quite different. But there has been lots of interest and support from locals. Many people have commented very positively on the venture so we hope it will be a great success.”

Ulverston Station has seen many changes in its 162 year history. First built as a terminal station but converted into a goods station after the line extended. A much grander station was built in 1878 after the Furness Railway took it over.

The building is on two levels. Both levels can be accessed from the road, with the upper level having a comfortable seating area, and displays of bikes and commuting accessories for sale. Downstairs will house the workshop, and point of sale, where fresh ground coffee and other hot and cold refreshments and snacks will be available. The authentic hand baked tastes supplied by Traybakes of Penrith will make anyone feel at home on their journey. Opening times

are planned to coincide with commuters and so will be based on the train timetable, envisaging a 6am - 7pm schedule with a break at some point throughout the day. The couple hope to create a quirky themed interior, utilising old bike parts, maps and photos setting the café apart from the rest. Colin Pickthall, councillor of Ulverston Town Council commented: “We welcome this initiative as it fits in perfectly with the town council’s policy to create a cycle friendly town, increasing and improving access for cyclists to access the trains.” Let’s hope Jonathan and Caroline’s visionary developments will help travellers appreciate the Italianate style of this red sandstone landmark with many of its original features still surviving and enable greater use of the bicycle.

Big Few Months Ahead for Ren

Local triathlete and Ulverston Tri Club Member, Renell Brennan, has an exciting few months ahead as she prepares for two big international competitions. She has qualified to represent Great Britain for the 45-49 age group at the European Tri Cross Championships in Switzerland on 25th June. Later in the year Ren hopes to travel to the World Tri Cross Championships in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. Ren, who only took up triathlon in 2013, qualified by winning her age category at the recent Malta Xterra triathlon on April 3rd. She was hampered by a very cold swim but came through strongly

in the bike and run sections. She adds this win to her second place at the Xterra World Championship in Hawaii last year. This is just one of several recent success stories for UTC with club-coach Paul Rodger having qualified to represent GB at the World Ironman Championships in Hawaii last year. Ulverston Tri Club runs training sessions catering for complete novices right through to representative athletes like Ren and Paul.

Bethany Christian Church Could you direct a stranger to our Church? Have you ever been yourself? Do you know its history? What sort of Church is it?

On 23rd June, Ulverston Methodist Church will be hosting a concert by a choir made up of orphan children from Uganda. They come from a village called Watoto where they are cared for in family groups. JUNE

Dalton Carnival takes place every year on the second Saturday of June. Records in Dalton Castle show that the Carnival has been a family event since the late 19th century.

This year’s carnival is themed ‘Transport through the Ages’ and they hope to have a large and varied parade which starts from Broughton Road in Dalton at 1pm. 14 year old Grace Milner is this year’s Carnival Queen and she will be attended by Lady in Waiting, Georgia Dean, and two Princesses, Leah Jones, and Emily Slater. The parade works its way through

She will be providing circus skills workshops, street performances and stage shows at Another Fine Fest on the 18th June in Ulverston Town Centre.

The truth is, it is the same small handful of individuals who work really hard in all weathers to make sure that our little town zings to life with colour, music, art, markets and carnival atmosphere. It is jolly hard and often thankless work and we need some new and fresh help! If you would like to get involved and take a role setting up, stewarding, de-rigging or generally contributing to the rich and vibrant festivals, we would love to have you on board. In particular, this team will take on the task of supporting The Lantern Festival, Retro Rendezvous and The Dickensian Festival. A small team of people are getting together to set up a consolidated workforce that can ensure the future of our traditions and to defend our title of The Little Festival Town With A Big Heart. If you would like to help, you can call 01229 588570 or pop in to Boogles and Bump on King Street to give Iain your details.

Askam & Ireleth Carnival

Key to the success of the day is the support from the community, sponsors, local advertisers and loyal volunteers. Every year the committee donates funding to local good causes and in 2015 just over £3000 was handed out at the annual presentation evening which was held at the Dalton Cricket Club. They also worked in partnership with the Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula which enabled them to send two young disabled people to the Calvert Trust.

Ulverston Hospice Carnival

JULY

The Ulverston Hospice Carnival, with proceeds being donated to St. Mary’s Hospice, is celebrating the 2016 carnival with a Brazil and Olympics theme!

Everyone is welcome to take part in the parade, by dressing up or helping decorate a float.

The Carnival will meander through the streets of Ulverston and on to Ford Park. Last year’s carnival was a huge success with over 10,000 people lining the streets of Ulverston. A fun day out for all the family.

JUNE

The Askam and Ireleth Carnival is a colourful parade featuring dance troops from across the region, Timmy the Tiger, a real army tank, the local schools and groups and many more attractions. The parade is followed by a family fun day on Duddon Sports field with bouncy castles, stalls food and of course the first dancing competition of the season. Many homes throughout the village are decorated and the streets are bedecked with bunting. It’s a real community event which the whole village enjoy and participate in. This year the Carnival queen is Teoni Grierson of Askam who is proud to follow in her Grandma’s steps. The two flower girls are Darcy Porter and Evie Fagan both from Askam School. The girls are keen to represent their village and are looking forward to their big day.

ART & MUSIC Anthony Hewitt has been described as a pianist of remarkable talent. He now combines his busy tour schedule with his duties of directing the Ulverston International Music Festival which he founded in 2004. As a child he had an insatiable appetite to hear other pianists, and the region offered some fine concert series and festivals including: Grizedale Theatre-in-theForest, Rosehill Theatre, and Lake District Summer Music, all of whom had presented the “big names” of the day. However, these visits were relatively rare, and the vast majority of top tier performers were not within the reach of regional presenters. Anthony told Ulverston now he was known locally as the ‘local lad made good’ who was uprooted from his practice room overlooking a field with sheep and cows, to a practice room overlooking the M25 which meant he had the opportunity to hear the great artists whilst in London. Visits to the US further influenced Anthony with its many different cultures and modes of thought. His initial aim with Ulverston International Music Festival was to bring friends to play chamber music in a beautiful part of the world, of which he is very proud, and of course to show to that region the incredible talent of some of his friends and colleagues. The Lottery played its part

Artist of the Month Anthony Hewitt

with a resurgence of funds available via Arts Council Lottery grants, so Anthony took the plunge. The festival started almost as an extension of family, and still retains that personal element. Anthony’s father was a local pharmacist, so he had a headstart in enlisting financial support and encouraging locals to attend concerts. In the inaugural festival there were only four concerts; one piano, voice and clarinet recital apiece, and a chamber music evening. 150 tickets sold because of one article in the local paper. Now there are two dozen concerts over the year incorporating Jazz, Folk, Tango, Comedy, Spoken word, and new commissions.

Anthony stated “We reach out to the next generation with workshops, family concerts and master classes. One of the most fascinating and successful projects was a composition project where primary school children were asked to write a variation on themes in a piece written for the Olympics. The results were astonishing - some of the best special effects in music I have heard! Our family concerts have been lauded by some of our more ‘senior’ punters. If we can bridge the gap between a 6 year old and a 76 year old, then we must be doing something right, and the future looks promising!”

Albrecht Durer: unique exhibition at Brantwood

JUNE 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 10 JUNE th

paint, theatre tickets, and (more recently) a flag. Many people see a bookshop as a source of all knowledge – sadly not true. Neither has the owners read every book on the shelves. The myth that bookshops are dying because people no longer read books is just that - a myth. Daisyroots Books is actively seeking to improve and extend its stock.

The Blue Gallery summer exhibition at Brantwood from 10th June to 9th October is celebrating the woodcuts and engravings of Albrecht Durer. Durer is arguably the only artist of his time in northern Europe to rank on a par with the great figures of the Italian Renaissance, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian and Leonardo. Durer not only stands alongside them but he occupies a unique place in the development of printmaking as an artistic medium. Arranged chronologically in the years between 1498 – 1523, Brantwood’s exhibition showcases some of Durer’s most important works. It explores how Durer developed his use of print as he sought to define his approach to the sacred at a time of religious and secular change. The show is curated by the Director of Brantwood, Howard Hull, who will deliver a number of guided tours during the period of exhibition. Please ring ahead to check when these are running. He will also give a talk on Durer in the Coach House Loft on Saturday 16th July. Also at Brantwood from 11th June to 7th August, an exhibition of paintings by the artist Patricia Haskey ‘A Feeling for Landscape’ - Ruskin’s beloved Lake District. Patricia has a unique perspective combining impressionism and graphic detail to capture the richness of the flora and fauna and the mountains beyond.

Why are we called The Outsiders?

In 1935, Miss Edith Eckersley, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, was running her small drama group in Bardsea. An enthusiastic amateur producer, she was keen to expand the horizons of what was then her private society. It was called The Outsiders, simply because she was located outside Ulverston. On 6th May 1936 she decided to throw open membership to the public and held a meeting in the anteroom of The Coronation Hall … and they still use The Coro to this day. Over the years they have endeavoured to make you gasp, laugh and cry with a variety of performances. Fortnightly play readings were held to begin with and the first big public production was in 1938 when the society presented ‘Distinguished Gathering’ at The Coronation Hall. In April this year, they performed ‘Twelfth Night’, to celebrate their 80th anniversary by honouring Shakespeare’s 400th. Although they are primarily a drama society, in the 70s they did ‘Lock Up Your Daughters’,

a good old fashioned romp of a musical. Not that this was their first foray into musical items..’Toad of Toad Hall’ in 1955 contained a few songs as well. Since then they have also performed Cabaret and Chicago...yes they can act, sing and walk at the same time. As to the future, their next production in November will be ‘I Hate Hamlet’. They are always pleased to welcome new members, be they interested in treading the boards or helping behind the scenes. If you would like to know more then you can contact them via the website www.ulverstonoutsiders.org

NATURE & WILDLIFE

June in the Garden June is a fabulous month in the kitchen garden or allotment. It’s a time when the garden is looking fantastic, the weather is (hopefully) warmer and we are getting a few balmy evenings to relax and enjoy it. I totally love and look forward to my weekly walk to the plant stalls on the market with my special flat-bottomed basket, it’s like the grown-up version spending Saturday pocket money! There is plenty to do in the garden this month if you are growing your own, so be prepared to potter about a little bit each day. Kay Hebbourn Garden, Food & Permaculture Blogger

Sowing Brassicas and leeks can go out now for winter and early spring harvesting. Continue sowing successions of salad crops, radishes, carrots, courgettes, French beans and sugar snap peas. You can also direct sow some basil into the soil in the greenhouse or polytunnel.

Tying up & Earthing up Keep earthing up potatoes and keep on top of tying up beans, peas, courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes and anything else that wanders and needs supports. Stay on top of pinching out the side shoots on your tomatoes too. Harvesting With a bit of luck, you could be eating cabbage, kale, radishes, carrots, first potatoes, onions, baby beetroot, salads, chard and spinach, celery, peas, beans, courgettes, herbs, rhubarb, strawberries and some currants. Keep harvesting salads when the leaves are very small like they do in Michelin Star restaurants, they taste really gorgeous before they get too big and most of them will re-grow anyway.

Members of Ulverston Mind are getting ready to dig for health on their new allotment at Hill Fall. Maybe some tea drinking will be involved but the allotment will provide an opportunity for people to have a sociable time in the fresh air while, if we are lucky with the weather this summer, also producing delicious vegetables. This is all part of Ulverston Mind’s drive to improve mental well-being. Although one in four people will encounter problems with their mental health over their lifetime, there is still a stigma attached to admitting such problems, and for over twenty five years Ulverston Mind has worked hard to break down this stigma. We are actively looking for volunteers and new trustees to join our executive committee, if you are interested call into 9 Queen Street, ring 01229 581578 or email advice@ ulverstonmind.org.uk .

You can make your own plant food using comfrey and nettle by making a compost tea that can be stored and diluted to use throughout the season.

Watering & Feeding Make sure that you keep your pots and containers well watered and especially make sure that you keep the roots of the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and melons moist.

Ulverston MIND is Growing!

18

GARDENING TIP!

Simply put some nettle and comfrey in a bucket, fill with water and weigh down with a brick. I hang mine in a bag on a stick and put it in the water butt. It collects rainwater and makes free feed for the season! Leave for a few weeks and then strain and pour into a bottle with a lid. Dilute 1 part to 20 parts of water to use as a plant food. It will smell, so keep a lid on it somewhere outside!

Seasonal warden returns to remote nature reserve

The seasonal warden at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Foulney Island Nature Reserve, near Rampside in Furness, plays a vital role in protecting rare and unusual breeding birds such as Arctic, little and sandwich terns, and eider ducks which nest on the ground amongst the shingle. Each year these birds migrate from their wintering feeding grounds, some as far away as the Antarctic, to Europe where they spend the spring and summer raising chicks before leaving again in the autumn. Mike Bannister (pictured), returning for his fifth year to Foulney Island, will be living in a caravan on the reserve from May until July. Mike says: “One of my main jobs at Foulney Island is to monitor the

JUNE 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 10 JUNE th

tern and gull colonies to assess breeding productivity and also to monitor breeding eider, meadow pipit and skylark populations and any other breeding birds on the nature reserve. I’ll be setting up electric fences to protect nests from predators before nesting begins and maintain the fences throughout the season, as well as putting

out egg pens on tern nests as another line of protection.” “As the nature reserve is open to the public all year round, I’ll also be talking to visitors about the importance of protecting places like this so birds can successfully raise chicks. During May, June and July we ask visitors to walk along the centre of the shingle spit that forms the nature reserve so that they don’t disturb the ground-nesting birds further down on the beaches. Dogs are not allowed on the nature reserve at this time.” Restoration work was carried out by Cumbria Wildlife Trust at Foulney Island Nature Reserve in March to make the habitat here even better for ground-nesting birds. cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk for more information.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust welcomes new trainees

LEFT TO RIGHT: Hayden Hurst, Jade Chenery, Mari-Anne Park, Georgina Blow, Rebecca Gledhill, Amy Hopley

Five trainees have begun a nine-month placement with Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas team. The three-year project to train people in marine conservation skills is running thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Skills for the Future scheme and is in partnership with the Wildlife Trusts for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside and the North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. Over the last five years Cumbria Wildlife Trust has trained 20 young people in marine conservation skills, many of them graduates of marine conservation degree courses but others from Cumbria’s coastal communities. The trainees will gain the foundation skills and practical experience necessary for working in marine and coastal conservation, with an emphasis on community engagement. They will be undertaking a range of taught courses and ‘on-the-job’ training across Cumbria and Lancashire’s coastal areas. The group will each spend half of the nine-month placement based at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Kendal office and half at their South Walney Nature Reserve on Walney Island. Rebecca Gledhill from Ulverston said: “I’m very excited to be starting this placement. The selection day was pretty tough and I know there was a lot of competition for every place on the scheme, so it’s great to finally get started. As I’m from Ulverston, I know Morecambe Bay is an amazing place for marine and coastal wildlife and I’m looking forward to discovering even more about this beautiful area and learning the skills to help me secure a job in the future.” Those who have completed the training scheme have gone on to work for the North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority, Joint Nature Conservation Committee and charities such as The Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB.

Sandside Lodge School

Pupils attending our school are the very fortunate beneficiaries of donations, grants and fund-raising from the local community.

We use this money to supplement activities such as residential visits, out-of-school-hours activities, and curriculum trips. We also use the money to purchase much needed items of specialist equipment for our pupils to use in school. Over recent years we have been able to subsidise a visit to the Calvert Trust for Key Stage 3 and 4 aged pupils, a ski trip to Italy for secondary aged pupils, a visit to Liverpool for sixth form pupils and a visit to a local farm and activity centre for primary aged pupils. We have purchased and installed playground equipment, added to our Multi-sensory Interactive Learning Environment and purchased ceiling mounted tracking for moving our pupils into and out of wheelchairs or specialist equipment.

As a UNICEF Rights Respecting School we teach our pupils that it is important to not only receive such welcome support but to also know that we can make a difference for others around the world, especially children and young people. Each term we organise a charity fundraising day in school with activities to help our pupils learn about the work of the selected charity and why they need to do this work. Recent days, shown in our photographs have included learning about change and how we can change aspects for

the better through the UNICEF ‘Day for Change’, and fund raising for ‘Happy Days’, a national charity which provides support for disabled and disadvantaged children and young people to access events and activities. ‘Happy Days’ have provided opportunities for visiting theatre groups to perform in our school and for pupils visiting the Calvert Trust at Keswick. Sandside Lodge School would like to thank all who support our work and provide us with opportunities to help our pupils learn.

Lindal and Marton Primary School We are very proud of the PE and sports provision at Lindal and Marton Primary School. This term we have been able to offer the children something new. Sensei Steve Turner and his wife Linda from South Lakes Academy of KarateDo come into school every Tuesday and deliver Karate sessions to all our pupils from Reception to Year 6. The sessions have proved very popular with the children and so we hope to make this a permanent part of our PE curriculum with a 12 week block of lessons every year. Sensei Steve Turner has been studying

the martial arts since 1989 and is a 3rd Dan black belt in Goju Ryu Karate-Do. He is also a qualified primary school teacher and passionate about teaching Karate. The children love working with Sensei

Steve and Linda, so much so that many of them have joined their Academy of KarateDo which takes place Monday to Thursday at Dalton Leisure Centre from 4:15pm.

They are not developers looking for somewhere to build a high-rise block of flats, but members of Ulverston Civic Society which is undertaking a photographic survey of the Conservation Area. This is for future reference, to support the local conservation officers in their management of historic Ulverston, and to log any effects of modernisation.

Ulverston in Bloom

The Civic Society was revived by former members mainly because of all the pressures on

Ulverston in Bloom is a voluntary group which looks after all the planting around the town.

This includes all the tubs and planters, Jubilee gardens and planted beds. At Dragley Beck allotments the group have planted an orchard and have a polytunnel to grow some of their own plants. Bee hives are to be installed enabling the group to harvest and sell its own honey. Blooming tasty! Judy Pickthall, chair of Ulverston in Bloom, explained that Ulverston in Bloom has linked with Business Improvement District to change the civic planting in the town and brighten the centre. This is in line with the BID’s proposed three “A”s objectives: Attractive, Accessible and Alive We look forward to the new colourful displays.

As its fame spread, just about everyone played the club next to the Pacific Ocean - and a selection of their recordings formed a fascinating presentation for members of Ulverston

the Conservation Area, and one of its aims is to encourage good quality replacements when old window frames, doors and indeed whole buildings reach the end of their lives. Part of Ulverston’s attraction to visitors is the way characterful quirks and design features from the past still exist, and the Civic Society seeks to preserve these. Some buildings in the Conservation Area are also listed, and their owners or new buyers are often unsure about what changes they are allowed to make. To help them, the Civic Society is in the process of producing leaflets giving up-to-date guidance, so they don’t fall foul of the planning department. It

Jazz Appreciation Society, meeting in April. Other lively presentations included Jazz Je-Ne Sais Quoi, featuring some fine French jazzmen, and Blue Note, a member’s favourite recordings from the leading jazz label. The programme for June 30 will include: High Times, Hard Times: One of the great jazz singers, Anita O’Day got established with Stan Kenton’s powerhouse band and went on to stardom but the high life eventually took its toll.Portraits and Sketches: another side, more diverse and lyrical, of Stan Kenton and his talented musicans. Graceful Guitars: From Django Reinhardt to Jim Hall, from Charlie

also acts as a consultee on planning applications, and has already had some successes in preventing the obliteration of historic features in the town. In another role, the Civil Society now holds the town archives, and is fundraising for materials so that these can be catalogued, and eventually be made available to interested members of the public. Membership of the Civil Society includes local historians and archaeologists, and if you are interested in the built environment or have any other relevant skills, you are welcome to call into The Old Curiosity Shop on Queen Street and talk to the chairman, Peter Lowe.

Christian to Herb Ellis, a look at some of the finest jazz players. Offering a friendly welcome to grizzled jazz ancients and open-eared newcomers alike, the Society meets monthly at Bardsea’s Malt Kiln Village Hall, a few minutes along the coast road from downtown Ulverston, where it presents jazz recordings from every era, with knowledgeable commentary, on high quality audio equipment. Sessions start at 7pm, and tasty refreshments are included in the modest charge of £2. For more information phone Roy Booth at 01524 853335, or visit the club’s website at www.ulverstonjazz.co.uk.
