Letter from the Editor So much to look forward to at the moment. As Wimbledon draws to a close we have Ambleside Sports this coming Thursday 28th July, rapidly followed by Rydal Sheepdog Trials, Ambleside Summer Flower show, Rusland Valley Show, Lakeland Country Fair at Torver, Hawkshead Show, and Grasmere sports. More details on page 15. Talking of Grasmere, cycling fans will need to book the day off on Monday September 5th as the Tour of Britain passes through. Grasmere also recently enjoyed the mountain festival outdoor cinema event attanded by over 1000 people and included a supporting performance from local musician Evie Plumb. Talking of Evie Plumb she not only pulled off a highly successful EskFest, helped support at ‘Another Fine Fest’ in Ulverston and the Ladies Race day in Bowness is support of St. John’s Hospice, but she also managed to get a first with honours in politics from Lancaster University. Well done to her and everyone who has achieved exam success. Talking of well done....congratulations to the organisers of Great North Swim (great experience) and also to Mike Blackledge and Windermere Rotary on an unbelievable ‘Rock on Windermere’ held in aid of the flood appeal. The quo were just fantastic, as was the whole organisation and no doubt was as a result of a huge amount of effort. U2 next year? Coniston clubs and societies, schools, church groups (and indeed any others in our coverage area) - did you know it is completely free to send in a 200 word news update along with a photo which will be printed (subject to space) free of charge. It’s a great way to get the word out. Next deadline is 1st August.

Wheelchair-friendly festival FoF FULL LOGO (deep)_Layout

Festival of the Fells, Ambleside’s first ever mountain and cultural festival which is being held from September 22-25, will officially be wheelchair-friendly.

The recently-formed charity, Freedom Wizard, will be offering wheelchair users the chance to try out the electric-powered ‘Boma’ all-terrain wheelchair and various versions of the selfpropelled ‘Mountain Trike’. Charity founder, Allie Pennington, is currently working on a wheelchair assessment of the town, designed to help wheelchair users get the best out of the festival, including suggested routes around the town and Waterhead. The festival is being organised by the group, Ambleside Together, which was formed in January to promote the town in the wake of the December floods. Since then, the

‘Love Ambleside’ branding campaign has been launched, and most of the shops in the town have put up window stickers with its distinctive heart logo. Alan Hinkes, the only Briton to have scaled all 14 of the worlds 8000m mountains, is the official patron of the festival and will be

Tour on TV A giant TV screen could be playing a starring role when the Tour of Britain cycle race comes to Ambleside in September. The thousands of people who will be flocking to the race can watch riders as they travel through Cockermouth, Keswick and Grasmere before reaching Ambleside, then on to Bowness and the finish in Kendal. Ambleside is expected to be the ‘go to’ place for the second stage of the Tour on Monday 5 September because of the spectacular sight of riders facing the fearsome climb of The Struggle to Kirkstone Pass.

How’s your swing? St John’s Hospice Golf Day will return to Windermere Golf Club for a 3rd year running on Friday 2nd September. This event has been a resounding success and places are already filling up fast. To secure your team’s place call Jill Santamera on 07745479254 or visit www.sjhospice.org.uk/golfday

Happy Birthday Beatrix! On the 28 July 2016 it is exactly 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter.

FREE LEGAL SURGERIES It is always a major decision to bring a marriage or a civil partnership to an end whether the marriage is a long one or is relatively short. Most people have no idea Lisa Martin what the process of divorce involves, how much it will cost, how long it will take or where they will stand at the end of it. Divorce proceedings do not have to be traumatic and confrontational; the legal process of divorce is usually a routine procedure. Book your place at our free legal surgery in Windermere to discuss your options with our specialist family solicitor, Lisa Martin. Our free legal surgeries are held in Windermere on Thursdays by appointment. Telephone 015394 42255 to book now.

The National Trust are celebrating right across the Lake District with many different activities. Clare Perry, National Trust Project Manager for the 150th Anniversary said: “We thought picnics were very fitting to celebrate Beatrix’s love for the outdoors, so bring your own or pick up supplies from our cafes or tea-rooms. There’ll definitely be a party atmosphere to celebrate this very special woman and all she did for her beloved Lakeland.” Allan Bank, Grasmere is planning a ‘readathon’ – reading all 23 Little Books of Beatrix Potter’s Tales from 12 – 4pm, there’ll be cake and space for people to picnic. Hill Top, Near Sawrey: Special items from the collection will be on display in the house. In the garden there’s a chance to try your

hand at water colour painting, join in with making a rag rug and meet a Herdwick sheep. Beatrix Potter Gallery, Hawkshead: Storytelling on the hour between 11 and 3. Wray Castle, Ambleside: Plenty of outdoor picnic tables and spaces; activities in the Peter Rabbit room. Sticklebarn in Langdale are running a special Herdwick BBQ with lovely lamb burgers on the terrace and showing ‘Miss Potter’ on the big screen at 6pm. There’ll also be plenty of cake. Low Wray Campsite Themed Beatrix Potter activities (based on 50 things to do before you’re 11 3/4) in the evening, when families are back on site. And of course lots of places to picnic if you’re staying with us.

Beautiful polling stations

Here is how you voted:

One thing we can all agree upon!

Dawn broke on Thursday 23 June to a beautiful Cumbria morning, and a long day ahead for the people who manned the polling stations across the county. Twenty-four hours later the country digested the news that the Leave campaign had won the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union, with South Lakeland the only area in Cumbria to vote to Remain. The first voter to arrive at Ambleside’s polling station at the Kelsick Centre, a couple of minutes before the doors opened, was Joyce Maddocks. “I came early because I’ve got to get to work in Penrith,” she said. Fifteen hours later, electrician Chris Harrison rushed into the polling station three minutes before deadline, emerging a couple of minutes later to explain that “work, and a couple of beers” had held him up. A minute later the doors were shut.

We may have been split down the middle in this area, and nationwide where the margin of Leave’s victory was 52%-48%, but there’s probably one thing everyone can agree upon: we have some of the prettiest polling stations in the country!

Cyclists, horse riders and walkers can now benefit from a safer way through the centre of the Lake District National Park thanks to the creation of a new multi-user route alongside the A591. The one-mile long trail, which is smooth enough for road bikes, links Dunmail Raise with the road on the west side of Thirlmere, meaning non-motorised travellers will no longer need to share the busy A-road with vehicles. National Park Chief Executive Richard Leafe said: “Not only will it give more people the opportunity to explore the Lake District in different ways, but it also forms part of our vision to have a fully connected cycleway through the Lakes.”

On the right track

Kauri for Oak Tucked away on the far side of Lake Windermere there’s a small workshop where Paul Martyn has been creating pieces of fine furniture for the last eighteen months. Paul grew up in rural New Zealand where he lived in a valley filled with a wonderful variety of trees in the Temperate Rain Forests there and developed a feeling for wood which has never left him. He was raised on a farm and this led to starting his working life as a sheep shearer, coming seasonally to the UK and working on farms the length and breadth of the country. After several years of this relentless work Paul’s back went on strike and a change of vocation brought him to furniture making, in which he had long had an interest. After studying at the London College of Furniture Paul moved north to make furniture alongside his brother. Twenty five years later Paul moved again, to be with his partner, near Ambleside. He loves the space he’s found in the Hamlet of Low Wray – a converted stable block, just a couple of miles from Ambleside, on the lane down to the campsite. There, Paul can work with the wood he’s passionate about, although now, rather than using the indigenous kauri or rimu of New Zealand it’s oak, cherry and spalted beech that he uses to design and create his beautiful antiques of the future.

Looking south to Dunmail Raise from the Thirlmere side of the pass, the new track can be seen snaking alongside the A591. The photograph was taken the day the A591 reopened.

Further north, United Utilities is currently working on an underpass from Swirls car park, beneath the A591, and out onto the paths and cycleway around

Thirlmere. This will provide pedestrians and cyclists with easy, safe access. Work is expected to be completed in July.

Gallery Sale

The landmark Old Courthouse Gallery in the centre of Ambleside has been sold subject to contract. Owner Andrew Brammall, who took over and converted the former drapery store on the site 22 years ago, said he was selling it as a going concern. The leasehold business was advertised at an asking price of £150,000.

Celebrating 10 years in Style

As Davenports Fashions at Grange over Sands approaches it’s 10th anniversary, Julia Sawford reflects on a fabulous (almost) 10 years in her change of career from wine merchant to fashion shop owner. Since taking over she has overhauled the shop for a more modern market, by bringing in new European designers and introducing a stylish shop refit. There is an elegance to the place far above anything you would find on the high street. A visit to Davenports at Grange over Sands would be worth it for the views alone. So it’s just as well the clothes lining the rails more than live up to their wondrous seaside setting. Davenports stocks an exclusive range of fashion pieces, from everyday shirts and dresses to cruise wear, occasion wear and wedding outfits. We only order four of each design to limit the possibility of running into someone else wearing the same thing. There might be a dinner at the golf club or a local wedding so we keep a book behind the counter with a note of which outfit has been purchased already for the occasion, so hopefully decreasing the chance of someone else having the same dress on.

Everyone comes in a gasps at the views, it just makes the entire shop such a nice place to be. People can take their time; take a seat by the window while they’re waiting for a friend or partner. Things are developing further as they have recently opened a home wear department downstairs, stocking the wonderful Gisela Graham interior collections. Davenports Boutique offers a very personal service in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere so why not pop in, have a browse and take in the lovely views. info@windermerenow.co.uk

A Victorian village remnant At a time when High Street stores come and go quicker than an England team at a football tournament, there’s a certain reassurement in seeing a sign on a shop window that reads: Established in 1898. Queen Victoria was on the throne when the Coniston Co-operative Society village store opened, Sheffield United were English football champions, and fellwalker Alfred Wainwright wasn’t born until nine years later. Over the years, hundreds of members have bought shares in the

It claims such a large-scale hotel could put in jeopardy many of the town’s B&Bs, and local people have questioned whether narrow Stockghyll Lane, which leads to Stockghyll Force and the main path up to Wansfell Pike, would be safe for walkers visiting the tourist attraction in view of the extra traffic such a development would create.

The opening of the M6, the university, the popularity of fellwalking – it all helped, and just at the right time.” Over the year some famous visitors have dropped in at the shop: Sir Anthony Hopkins “he wanted to use the loo,” said Fred, film director Ken Russell, Victoria Wood, Sir Chris Bonington, Melvyn Bragg, Patricia Routledge... A Tern around the lake An old lady of the lake the, ‘MV Tern’, launched in June, 1891, celebrated her 125th birthday with a day of VIP cruising on Windermere. The Tern is one of a handful of ships built in the reign of Queen Victoria which is still fully operational for passengers today. In her life she is estimated to have carried 17 million passengers, sailed one million miles and even hosted the Olympic torch in the run-up to the 2012 London Games. Lord Cavendish of Furness Deputy Lieutenant was among the special guests who took a VIP cruise on the vessel in June, and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the birthday. He was invited by the boat’s current owners, Windermere Lake Cruises.

Lord Cavendish of Furness DL said, “I have a longstanding admiration for Windermere and my family has well-known historic connections with the Furness Railway Company which commissioned the boat back in the 19th century. I feel genuinely moved to be sailing on Tern on this landmark birthday and have had huge fun on this particular trip.” Amongst other specially invited guests were Carol and Steve Shaw who have celebrated both their 50th and 60th birthdays on the MV Tern. Carol said, “It is a really special atmosphere on board Tern. It has a compact, sleek design and you can literally feel the history. The staff obviously adore her – and so do we!”

We have a chat with...

NIGEL Wilkinson is a familiar face in local media and on television. He is the boss of Winander Leisure Limited, which runs the ever-popular Windermere Lake Cruises as well as the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow. Nigel started out as a Civil Engineer, and then a Chartered Accountant, back in his native York. In 1992, as a consultant, he came to be involved with what was then called the Bowness Bay Boating Company. After working closely with them he succumbed to an invite to become their Managing Director in 2004 and swiftly moved across to a make his home in the National Park - before they could change their minds!

Nigel’s love for the Lake District started on family holidays when he was bitten by the Lake District bug. So the opportunity to come up here and work here was one he couldn’t possibly refuse. He is proud to work for a local company with local roots – stretching back to 1968.

“One of the things I’m immensely proud about is that we are a locallyowned business. The shareholders live locally, the directors live locally. We are here for the long term. Creating employment is really important to us and acting in a considerate way is absolutely key because our reputations in the area are very important. If you can provide year-round employment people can settle here, they are properly based in the community.” “The target for the Lake District and Cumbria is to get growth in the ‘quieter months when the area has spare capacity and occupancy levels in the hotels need to be increased - which is not a problem in the peak season.”

I would like to begin our response by pointing out that Windermere Town Council has no political affiliations of any kind and all of our councillors are independent, unpaid volunteers, many of whose families have lived in this community for generations.

Boundary changes

015394 43016

JULY/AUGUST 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST AUGUST

The Town Council is fundamentally opposed to the proposal to shift a substantial part of the north of our town (Applethwaite & Troutbeck) into the Ambleside and Grasmere ward. It is inconceivable that this will bring any of the benefits which the review is supposed to deliver. One of your stated aims is that the pattern of the division should, as far as possible, reflect the interests and identities of local communities. The proposals, in their current format, ride roughshod over the historic basis of our community. There are neighbourly links to Ambleside and Grasmere but there is no community link between the two settlements, which have a completely different history and evolution. Moving these facilities into another community’s ward area shatters our physical and geographical identity and cuts the community in half. The new boundaries you propose would take most of Windermere lake out of Windermere. This is inconceivable to local people and will seem bizarre to visitors and tourists. By passing Windermere lake to Ambleside & Grasmere, your proposals ignore a vital part of our community’s identity. The lake must remain within the Windermere & Bowness administrative area. Another of your stated aims is that the electoral arrangements should provide for effective and convenient local

government. Shifting a large part of north Windermere to Ambleside & Grasmere will cause a huge amount of confusion. Few residents living in the town of Windermere are likely to have any interest in voting for Councillors who represent wards which would become parts of Ambleside and Grasmere, villages which lie, respectively, 5 & 9 miles to the north of the town of Windermere. We call upon the Boundary Commission to set aside these proposals, which make no sense locally. Our proposal is that the Windermere & Bowness wards retain the current boundaries but move to having 3 members elected to SLDC rather than 4. We realise that this creates some difficulty in meeting your third stated aim of ensuring that each district has roughly the same number of electors and that there would be a disparity of approx 1,400 between Windermere and Ambleside & Grasmere. We believe that this disparity is perfectly defensible. Ambleside and Grasmere is a sprawling rural area of small settlements and two small rural hubs. Windermere is the largest urban settlement in the Lake District National Park. Therefore, it seems to us perfectly appropriate that there is some electoral disparity. The alternative is to split a community in half and create problems of identity and democratic effectiveness for generations to come.

This term we have been involved in a very exciting art project sponsored by Nanny Brow Hotel. It was organised by parent governor, Kerrie Benson and run by local artist Sally Toms ably assisted by Bella Duckworth and parent helpers Heather, Laura, Emma and Kerrie. Over three days, everyone created and painted bespoke tile postcards from clay with their own individual and unique designs. The artwork will be a permanent installation at school for the current children and future generations to enjoy. We are all really looking forward to seeing the finished piece. Minibus - At the end of April we took delivery of our brand new minibus. Cross Lake Swim - The older children were given the chance to celebrate their swimming achievements by swimming across Coniston Water. We couldn’t have done this without the help of

Boundary change proposals Some voters in Windermere are reacting angrily to the proposal by the Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBCE) to reconfigure the council wards of Windermere & Applethwaite and Ambleside & Grasmere. The review is necessary because South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) currently has high levels of electoral inequality meaning some councillors represent many more or many fewer voters than others. This means that the value of each vote in district council elections varies thereby decreasing representative democracy. A third of SLDC of wards currently have a variance of more than 10% from the average number of voters for the district. A campaign opposing the changes has been mounted on the political front by District Councillor Ben Berry, worried that a change in condition will confuse voters and make his job harder. Having set up a petition on his website the councillor is pleased to have received

Showtime UP-COMING SHOWS NOT TO BE MISSED

hundreds of signatures in support of his position. He is strongly backed by Windermere Town Council who echo Berry’s concern as well as emphasising their dismay that - in strictly electoral terms - parts of Windermere will be moved across to the Ambleside and Grasmere ward. Town Councillors have raised a number of objections the chief being that this will damage Windermere’s identity and set a precedent for further administrative changes in coming years. Proposals and counter proposals were being bandied about in the offices of SLDC

in advance of July’s consultation deadline.

The commission will take these into account as well as paying special attention to submissions regarding the changes made by members of the public. The LGBCE states that council wards should “reflect community interests and identities and include evidence of community links” but perhaps the mandarins might reflect that the good people of Windermere feel a strong identity and aren’t quite ready to embrace their Ambleside brethren up the road with too many community links, just yet!

Lakeland Book of the Year Winners Revealed The winners of the 2016 Lakeland Book of the Year awards were revealed at a special literary luncheon in July with the top prize going to a local author, Robert Beale. This year, 50 books were entered and the Judges, author and columnist Hunter Davies, broadcaster and writer Eric Robson and BBC News broadcaster Fiona Armstrong, spent the spring months pouring over them. Founder of the Awards, Hunter Davies, said: “The

2016 awards included the some of the best short entries we’ve ever seen. The range of topics was astonishing and I would like to congratulate the winners and all those who entered as they should all be congratulated for continuing to contribute to Cumbria’s literary landscape at such a high quality.’’ Local winners were Karen Lloyd of Kendal won the Striding Edge Productions Prize for Guides and Places with her book “The Gathering Tide” Robert Beale

Charity Swimmers smash target It takes a lot to surprise the organisers of the Great North Swim – Europe’s biggest openwater event – but they were gobsmacked when they saw the number of people supporting a charity to mark the first anniversary of the death of Ambleside estate agent David Benjamin at the age of 53. A team of more than 70 family members and friends swam a half-mile Windermere course with the target of raising £10,000 for the Preston-based Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s melanoma research project. To date, over £20,000 has been raised. Many of the swimmers who took part were novices in open-water swimming and were ‘coached‘ by Ambleside resident Micky Durkin

It’s been a busy month. On top of all the campaigning for the Referendum there has been a lot of work on the future of the Westmorland General Hospital, the Lakes Line and the aftermath of the floods last year. No wonder my family have been complaining about not seeing me very much!

MAIN: Rosemere supporters RIGHT: Micky Durkin celebrates

who, for the past few months has been on crutches following knee operations. And they rewarded him with a huge ovation as he finished his second swim of the day. Matthews Benjamin and Fine & Country, announced earlier this year that it would

donate £100 of every sale to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation to honour the memory of former managing director David. Around 10,000 people took part in this year’s Great North Swim. The event is based at the Low Wood Hotel & Marina.

Pancake sales were hardly flat! The line of swimmers queuing for an après-dip pancake after an hour or more in Windermere was relentless. “We sold over 2,000,” said Kendal Crêperie co-owner Philip Dixon, “and there was a majority of sweet toothers – it was sixty-forty sweet

JULY/AUGUST 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST AUGUST

I have written before about the proposals to close the Kentmere Ward at the hospital. I hope you have been able to sign my petition against this, if you haven’t there is still time just Google “Tim Farron Kentmere Ward petition”. The trust that runs the ward changed its mind over its plan to close it at the end of June and decided to run a proper consultation about the future of the ward. They really should have done this in the first place rather than simply rushing to close the ward after receiving a poor report on it. By the time you read this the opportunity for you to take part in the consultation will have closed but if you sign the petition I will make sure that the trust knows about your feelings. We should hear what decision they make at the end of the summer. Continuing with the hospital. As you probably know the maternity services at the hospital were moved to being provided on an “on call” basis during the night and at weekends some time ago. At the time of this announcement we were told it was a temporary measure. Well the bosses at the hospital have confirmed to me what we all suspected, that they want to make this temporary change permanent. What is particularly worrying is that since the change there has been a fall in the number of women giving birth at the hospital. My concern is that the long term plan is to run down maternity services to the point where the Trust in charge can close the ward on the basis of it being no longer viable as not enough women are using it. As many of you know they have tried to close the ward in the past and met massive local opposition. This feels to me like a roundabout way to get to the same result. I have told the Trust managers that I think this is unacceptable and have written to the council committee who oversee changes to health care provision and asked them to stop the plans. A lot of parents have contacted me over the planned removal of subsidised season ticket for sixth formers travelling on the Lakes Line to school. Some parents are facing the cost of travel to school for their children rising by 400% to £1000 per year. What is particularly unfair is that parents have little choice other than to pay the increase, if they don’t they will have to take their children out of school, breaking friendships and creating nervousness as start the vitally important A’level years. I have written to Northern Rail demanding they change their minds on this. Briefly on flooding. The Government still hasn’t submitted its application for flood relief money from the EU. Need I say more? If I can help you with these or any other issues please do get in touch by emailing tim@ timfarron.co.uk or calling 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

New RfM office sets sail in Windermere With Windermere as the heart of the tourist industry in the South Lakes, it is a natural choice for the expansion of RfM Accountants based in Morecambe and Lancaster, and from 1st July, Lakes Accountancy became part of the RfM group. With their ‘can do’ attitude, friendly, client-focused approach and specialist skills, it should be a perfect fit with Lakes Accountancy. We live in interesting and challenging times, both for business and personal tax, and being part of a larger group enables more immediate access to a greater range of specialist skills. So what changes will there be? Apart from some additional faces in the office it will be business as usual. Helen Witte will still be involved with the preparation of accounts and tax returns as she has been in previous years, and, although Sue Bloy is looking forward to having more time to spend on her other business and community interests in the area, she will be around to ensure that the transition goes smoothly.

L to R: Paul Andrews from FBU, Sue & Peter Jackson from ‘Heart of the Lakes’ and Sophia Newton from Coulson Associates

The Lake District’s most successful self-catering cottage company, Heart of the Lakes, has scooped a major award at the ‘Family Business of the Year’ awards held in London. The family business, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, won the ‘North and Northern Ireland People’s Choice Award’ for family business of the year and was also the runner up in the national ‘People’s Choice Award’. “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the People’s Choice award for the regional category and been placed as runners-up in the national award.” added Heart of the Lakes’, Sue Jackson. “To have been voted for by the public is the ultimate accolade. Ethics and values have always been at the very heart of what we do, so it is a great honour to have those qualities recognised by such a wide audience.”

Free Resident Passes prove very popular The number of people signed up for Windermere Lake Cruises’ ever popular Residents Pass scheme has passed the 25,000 barrier for the first time. To celebrate the landmark figure Suzanne Pitchford from Carlisle had the honour of being named as the 25,000th recipient of a Residents’ Pass and was invited on board the historic MV Teal ‘steamer’ for an evening buffet cruise with her husband Richard. She said, “It was a lovely surprise to be invited. It’s easy to forget about some of the great attractions on our doorstep, so it’s definitely given us an extra incentive to get out more and enjoy more as a family.” Residents Passes are valid for 5 years and are available to anyone living

It’s taken 35 years but Dean Jennings has finally made it to his spiritual (the Lake District) and his physical (Ambleside) homes. Dean, 47, from Norfolk, first came to Cumbria on a school trip aged 12, an experience that changed his life. “I’d never been out of East Anglia before and I would never have believed anywhere could be so beautiful,” he said. “I’ve been back on holiday every year since then, sometimes twice a year.”

JULY/AUGUST 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST AUGUST

Now he has opened Ambags, a specialist shop in Lake Road just opposite The Lily, and moved to the town, too. His partner Maxine, who still lives in Norwich, hopes to move here soon. Dean knows his handbags. For years he had a stall on Norwich Market – “more like a shop, really, as the market is open six days a week,” he said. And the name? “I thought about ‘Ambleside Handbags’ or something similar, then it just came to me,” he said. A bit like that blinding flash all those years ago.

The Langdale Chase Hotel is for sale. Thomas Noblett, Managing Director of Langdale Chase Hotel, commented: “After over 23 years together at the Hotel, myself and my fellow directors have decided it is time to retire” On the shores of Windermere with extensive lake frontage and spectacular panoramic views, the hotel has been the proud winner of the title of ‘Best view in Britain’. Originally built in 1895, the renowned Grade II listed country house hotel is set in six acres of attractive landscaped grounds, including a luxurious Lake House providing eight guest bedrooms, a unique Boat House and two private jetties.

On the fells

D

CLIVE HUTCHBY

on’t the fells look great at this time of year? Lush, verdant, inviting... well, perhaps not the latter, because the reason the mountains look magnificent is because they are cloaked in the shrouds of a prehistoric survivor: bracken. For visitors to the Lake District who prefer to gaze upon the fells from below rather than climb them, this ferocious fern is a thing of beauty; for fellwalkers, it is somewhere between a minor inconvenience and a major obstacle. If, like me, you walk the fells all year round, you will be used to following sketchy paths or seeking out new routes across previously untrodden ground. But from early June to late October these pleasures are more akin to purgatory thanks to this 55-million year old plant, which means the summer months are best reserved for sticking to the established paths that have, over the decades, resisted the encroachment of the green menace. In the course of my work on the Pictorial Guides I have, on a few occasions, been forced to fight my way through this tick-infested foliage. A climb up Grange Fell in Borrowdale via its little-frequented north ridge was a particularly harrowing experience that felt as if I was battling my way through a Burmese jungle. But possibly the worst time I had battling through bracken in 2015 was when I climbed the good path up the east ridge of Tarn Crag above Easedale. There was a tiny track to follow, but the bracken was so high and invasive that I really thought I would have to turn back as the fronds lashed against my face and tangled up in my boots. Check out the photograph below and you will see what I mean. Ugh!

Looking down on the path through bracken on Tarn Crag. Clive Hutchby, who contributes to Windermere Now, is revising Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. Books One, Two and Three (the Eastern, Far Eastern and Central fells) have already been published. He is currently working on Book Four: The Southern Fells.

Disabled sailing with Blackwell Sailing club Friends, Will Clark and Stephen Hague, are both disabled following accidents. From the first day they met, Steve insisted that Will should start sailing on Windermere with Blackwell Sailing. Will, now in his third season of sailing said: “It’s a fantastic club, nice to get out on the lake and it gives me a real sense of speed and freedom”. Following fund-raising, both Steve and Will are to benefit from a new specialised boat which is to be named June Hague after Steve’s mum. David Hall, the principal instructor at Blackwell Sailing said: “The boat we chose is very modern, has two bucket seats and joy stick controls. In addition we can plug in an electric system to enable a person to steer Some people sit in tiny cars and try to climb up stupidly steep hills. That is Sporting Trials for you. The cars are not roadregistered yet can cost over £30,000, but older cars can be found around the £2000 mark. This makes it the cheapest form of motorsport there is. A small entry fee and a couple of gallons of fuel, you need a passenger to balance the car, and that’s about it. The sport is regulated by the MSA, the governing body of motor sport. Crews attempt to drive up 6 very difficult Hills set out on one site on farmland or in woods. They usually attempt each Hill 4 times. The further up the Hill you manage to get, the less penalty points you score.

the boat with either a rocker switch or a straw control, which is what Will uses. When we have gusty conditions there is enough space on board to take an extra crew member to balance the boat. Both Will and Steve have sailed the boat now, I am sure others will want to try it too and we are all still very excited about it!” Will says that he is “grateful to all the people who give their time helping with Blackwell” Will

feels that “the boat will be more exciting and is looking forward to the opportunity of pushing the limits to see what this boat can offer”. Blackwell Sailing is a registered charity that offers sailing on Windermere to local people with disabilities. If you would like to sail with them or if you have sailing expertise and would like to volunteer please get in touch 01539 445333.

What do you do on a Sunday?

The driver with the least penalty points wins. There are no expensive prizes, but the reward is a great day out with lovely people. Local Windermere man, Robin Jager retired from driving a couple of years ago after over 50 years competing. He won the top crown of the BTRDA Gold Star during that time. He says “It’s brilliant. Everyone is the best of friends. For me that is one of the best aspects of Sporting

Trials.” He still marshalls on events.

The venues are often spectacular. In the North of England the Northern Phoenix Trials Car Club hold events on the Pennines, in the Lakes and in the Dales. There is a practice day coming up in the Windermere area. Interested spectators (possible new members!) are always welcome. Get more information www.nptcc.org.uk

BEST PITCH EVER! Mike Thornton on the lush new lawns of Hillard Park.

Every cloud has a silver lining, they say, but in the case of Ambleside Football Club it’s green. The December 2015 floods submerged the club’s Hillard Park ground under five feet of water, and when it had drained away club officials found millions of stones covering the pitch. “We tried to clear them but it was impossible,” said club chairman Mike Thornton. “The only way we could continue was with a new pitch.”

Now, thanks to a number of grants, including from Lakes Parish Council and the Football Association, a new pitch has been seeded and, according to Mike, “it’s the best surface we have ever had. It’s just like Wembley!”

Everyone’s a winner The old sporting expression ‘everyone’s a winner’ was never more evident than at the first Triathlon X event held in Ambleside, billed as the world’s toughest ultra-distance event.

The first-placed finisher, Andy Drobeck, all the way from Montana, USA, completed the swimbike-running course in an astonishing 12 hours 38 minutes, an amazing achievement considering Triathlon X comprised a 2.4mile swim, a 112-mile ride over all the Lake District’s high passes, and a 26.2-mile marathon to Scafell Pike and back. Somerset woman, Daisy Baggs was the first female, with an impressive time of 16:50:41. Both winners took home a £1000 prize. Ambleside GP Dr Paul Davies, was the final finisher of the day – in just over 21 hours.

SCHOOL REPORT

Hawkshead Primary and the Chocolate Factory

In June, the whole school had the opportunity to visit the newly opened Cocoa bean Factory in Hawkshead Village. All pupils were able to make chocolate items and watch the process of how we get from cocoa bean to finished chocolate products. They came away with goodie bags and aprons and were bubbling with the excitement from the experience – a great time was had by all! Cumbria in Bloom recently visited the school and were shown around by the Eco committee, the pupils of which had made a crown with a 90 in the middle in flowers in celebration of the Queen’s birthday. In addition, they have filled a range of pots and hanging baskets to making a welcoming floral entrance to the school! Fostering understanding, Years 2 and 3 and 4 had an interesting trip to visit a mosque as part of their studies of other world religions in RE.

St Cuthbert’s is already rich in cultural diversity where the children have the opportunity to learn languages from Italian to Spanish, French and other European and world languages. Headteacher Peter Harrison stated: “Twinning with Diessen adds German and Bavarian culture to our curriculum. I feel very fortunate that our lessons can be interjected with

“The bells, the bells.”

Year 6 from Ambleside Primary had a lovely time learning about bell ringing at St Mary’s Church in Ambleside. They climbed up the bell tower (counting all 62 steps)

they were transported. Three of the church’s bell ringers gave a demonstration and talked about how they needed to practice to ring out the different chimes. Lots of the children are now keen to go back and have a go as part of an after school opportunity which the church is going to offer.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

The Lake District Sheepdog Trials August 4th, sees the 118th Lake District Sheepdog trials at Hill Farm, Ings. With all the old favourites: open sheep dog trials, hound trails, wrestling, hound and terrier shows and well stocked catering (usually including a local beer tent). Some, but not all, of these elements have remained constant throughout the long history of the Lake District Sheepdog Trial Association, formed in 1891 and with an earlier history that’s surprisingly well documented. The 1877 trial is one of the first recorded held on the last Saturday in August on Belle Isle where “a large and fashionable gathering assembled at the invitation of Mr J. R. Bridson”. By 1883 the sixth meeting of the North Western Counties Dog Trials Association took place on Applethwaite Common, close to what is now Dubbs Reservoir and included an “influential attendance”.

This was to prove a popular location for the trial with between 300 and 400 people reported as present at the inaugural 1891 meeting of the Lake District Association, a significant crowd in the days before cars and buses. The winning Dogs were Ambleside’s Fly, Kendal’s Mite and Staveley’s Jack in the local, Kendal & Sedbergh Union and open classes respectively. By 1896 “there were over 1000 spectators and about 100 carriages” and hound trailing became a

reported spectacle in the early 1900’s. The odd fallow year and wartime suspensions are really the only interruptions in an otherwise consistent highlight of the Summer overseen by many a local worthy over the years, from judges to farmers to the Lord Lieutenant of Westmorland. Proving that moaning about our weather is a sport enjoyed at least as much as the trials, many of the historical entries over the years describe rain, gales, mist and bitter cold. Hopefully this year’s trial will fare a little better in the weather stakes.

Rotary Club – President’s Lunch Members of the Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary Club and guests were welcomed to the President’s Lunch at the Rothay Manor with aperitifs on the lawn prior to the main event in the dining room. The excellent meal of three courses was was enjoyed whilst, local harpist, Clare Bakewell, played a selection of both classical and modern music on her modern copy of a 17 th Century Bohemian Troubadour Harp to the great pleasure of all. The highlight of the lunch was the presentation by the

District Governor Arthur Jones of the Paul Harris Foundation award to Rotarian Alan Katz, who very much spearheaded the organisation and collection of funds (including a one-man pub crawl!) towards the Cumbria Flood relief, helping to raise over

£20,000 in the process. This was in addition to the collection earlier in the year for the disaster in Nepal, and other charitable work over many years both within Rotary and other groups. A very worthy recipient of the award, well done Alan.

Rainy Day money for Hospice In June, Leven Valley Support Group for St Marys Hospice held their annual summer fair and car boot sale in Haverthwaite and with the help of many friends and volunteers surpassed all expectations by raising the magnificent amount of £4,800! Until the heavens opened after lunch the weather had been very kind with a warm and sunny morning. Ritchie the magician enthralled the children with his tricks and Taffy Thomas the Storyteller took them on a journey to another world with his stories. Fifi the Flea flew in from Paris with Uncle Tim and Daisy. Bargains including books, cakes, plants, local craft, produce stalls and a car boot. Heartfelt thanks to all the friends and volunteers for helping make the day such a success. A big thank you to everyone for their continued support in helping raise funds to help the patients and their families in the hospice.

Brantwood exhibits Durer Beyond the Burden of Brilliance is Brantwood’s summer exhibition celebrating the works of a 16th century German artist. As a printmaker, Durer occupies a unique place in its development as an established medium. Durer’s influence and fame grew across Europe and paved the way for massproduced imagery to become a recognised force in cultural and social change. The exhibition is arranged

chronologically through the years between 1498 and 1523, showcasing some of Durer’s most important but least celebrated works exploring how he developed his print technique. The show includes some famous larger works such as Nemesis and the Martyrdom of St Catherine as well as providing an opportunity for visitors to get close to the jewel-like detail of some of Durer’s smallest, most intricate engravings. The exhibition runs at Brantwood until October 9th.

Coniston ‘should be home’ to Great Gable plaque

A historic plaque that stood on the top of Great Gable for nearly 90 years should find its final home in Coniston, according to the curator of the Ruskin Museum in the village. Vicky Slowe said it would be fitting that the plaque, to commemorate the members of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club who died in World War One, which was designed by John Ruskin’s longtime assistant WG Collingwood, should be on permanent display at the museum. The plaque was dedicated on White Sunday 1924 on the summit of Great Gable by Geoffrey Winthrop Young in front of 500 people. It was removed in July 2013 and a replacement, with

spelling errors corrected, was dedicated on Great Gable on 10 November 2013. Some 700 fellwalkers were on the summit that day, many of whom have been wondering what happened to the original plaque. It was on display at the Imperial War Museum

in London for a while, then its counterpart in Manchester, before being put on show at Coniston and then at Keswick Museum. “This is its natural home,” said Vicky, who will be lobbying for it to be housed in the village.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Staying fit doesn’t have to mean expensive gym memberships or fitness classes. Everyday activities around the home have huge physical benefits and can support mental wellbeing too. To celebrate the warmer weather, AXA PPP healthcare has released a new infographic, outlining just how beneficial an afternoon in the garden can be on the body.

HEAD Gardeners have lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, leading to improved sleep patterns, relaxation and mental wellbeing. HEART As a physical activity, gardening naturally helps strengthen the heart, building endurance and increasing stamina, meaning a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. BACK Raking and bagging leaves means constant bending twisting, lifting and carrying - all these strengthen muscles. Just remember to bend at the knees to reduce back strain. ARMS Cutting back hedges with hand-held clippers not only strengthens your triceps and biceps, but also strengthens your core as you reach up and stretch. Work such as raking and carrying leaves can also tone the upper arms and increase flexibility and strength. ABDOMINALS Weeding on hands and knees, raking, raking strimming and starting a mower. Are all gardening activities which help strengthen abdominal muscles and build a strong core. BOTTOM Squatting while weeding helps to build tone and gluteal muscles. THIGHS Pushing a wheelbarrow and squatting to weed flowerbeds helps strengthen quads and hamstrings. FEET AND ANKLES Balance and flexibility is improved, helping to prevent falls in older people. MOUTH Social interaction with friends vastly improves mental and physical wellbeing. STOMACH A greater exposure to soil bacteria means gardeners have a stronger immune system. HANDS Gardening can increase hand strength, pinch force and nimbleness.

As a damp and largely uncultivated area we have a reasonably strong proportion of ash trees around here - if you let your garden go wild for a few years there’s a good chance that a small springy ash or two will spring up. Last year was the first time that a number of cases of ash dieback were reported in South Lakeland, having spread in a relatively short space of time from the initial wildwood outbreak in East Anglia in 2012. The problem is caused by a fungus, until recently known as Chalara fraxinea, the disease is referred to as Chalara dieback. Local spread of the fungus from one infected tree to

Rusland Valley apprenticeships Ancient Rusland Valley woodlands are going to be restored thanks to a project which has created 6 new apprenticeships. The Rusland Valley is an important part of the Lake District’s diverse heritage. Its beautiful wooded valleys, scattered settlements and a network of twisting minor roads make it a unique and very special area. However, many of these woodlands are suffering neglect due to a loss in woodland industries and the skills associated with them. Unique habitats

created by coppicing have changed, leading to a loss in species. The Rusland Horizons scheme hopes to reverse this decline. By recruiting and training young people in practical and rural heritage skills, the Valley Futures programme has offered a fantastic opportunity to restore Rusland Valley’s landscape and enable young people to develop vital practical skills and knowledge essential for pursuing a career in the rural sector. Valley Futures will follow in the footsteps

of the success of the Lake District National Park’s ‘Fell Futures’ apprenticeship programme, as a result of which all of the participants are now employed full time in the rural sector.

Churches Together in Windermere During Christian Aid Week in May, members of two of our churches, St. Martin’s and Carver Uniting Church, were busy with the houseto-house collections in Windermere and Bowness. £2,806 was raised for the Charity. (last year’s collection raised £3,195).

This year, the money will go towards improving the lives of people who have to live on low-lying islands in the Bramaputra River in Bangladesh. Many thanks to all the collectors and to all who gave donations

Quakers welcome everyone Gatesbield House on New Road Windermere was once the home of Stanley and Emily Davies, who were Quakers. Stanley trained as a furniture maker with a famous Arts and Craft exponent named Romney Green. He built Gatesbield House which features the fine workmanship and carvings of both him and his wife Emily. On their deaths, the house was bequeathed to the Society of Friends in order to provide accommodation for older members of the Society and others in need of such accommodation. In 1982, Gatesbield Quaker Housing Association was established and 19 purpose built flats were built in the 2 acres of secluded gardens adjoining the house. The house played host to a weekly meeting of Quakers and continues to do so. Meetings for Worship are

held regularly for an hour every Sunday at 10.30am. Anyone is welcome who would like to join in a time of peaceful, quiet reflection. In stillness, we look to find a deeper sense of God’s presence. Although we have our roots in Christianity, we find meaning and value in the teachings and insights of other faiths and traditions. Quakers believe that there is something of God (The Creator) in everyone, that everyone is equal, and that our faith is lived through action.

We work positively and creatively with others to build a more just and peaceful world. If you would like to know more do join us one Sunday morning or contact Maggie on 015398 21125 or Margaret on 015394 34069

Thursday 11 August. 11am Concert ‘ The Morning Serenade’, given by Lake District Summer Music Academy Artists and Ensemble. Tickets £16. Friday 19 August: 2.30pm Bereavement Group Meeting. Sunday 21 August: 6.30pm Evening Communion Service. Sunday 28 August: 9.00am Church with Croissants.

We’re a vibrant all-ages church that loves to get together and celebrate Jesus through music, praise and worship. Every second Saturday of the month we hold Unite Community Worship, an evening dedicated to praising our Lord and everyone is invited to come along. On Saturday 13th August, we’re having a special ‘campfire acoustic’ Unite evening led by Stu Carter, Worship Leader at LCC. Weather permitting, we’ll be holding the event in our downstairs outdoor courtyard and we’re looking forward to singing campfire style! We invite
