Letter from the Editor The excitement of the Tour of Britain is now just a memory, but once again the event showed how slick and professional organisation can make a major event a pleasure. The rolling road blocks were handled by the Police smoothly and the actually passage of the riders was over in a matter of minutes. The TV coverage given by Channel 4 showed the Lake District in a wonderful light (even in the showery South Lakes). Can we hope that more visitors will come here to see for themselves that the beauty in the area is not just in the population centres?
04
The tale of the ticket machines rumbles on. Some of our readers have been “ferry upset” by developments. Local SLDC councillor Ben Berry has taken up the cudgel to try and get a resolution to the problem. Where has the human interaction in our public services gone? Anyone travelling on the ferry enjoyed the slightly old-fashioned concept of being welcomed on board by a real person who took your money with a smile (usually). Does the supposed efficiency of the electronic machine really make up for the loss of the personal touch?

We also have reflections on the intrusion into our ancient landscape of the Pokemon phenomenon. Will Claife Viewing Station become a Pokemon gym? (I know all about this stuff - NOT).

Wateredge Inn opens its doors It took 239 days, but on August 1 the Wateredge Inn at Waterhead – the victim of two serious floods in six years – finally completed its full reopening.
The Grand Day Out returns on the weekend of 14th, 15th and 16th October, following the success of January’s inaugural event. There are all sorts of exciting goings-on planned with events for all ages in a celebration of Cumbria; from star gazing on through guided walks and bike rides, trail runs, mystery tours, tea and cake, family quests, gigs, workshops, films screenings, work parties, races and to a culminatory barbecue on Sunday afternoon. Langdale is the host with lots of outdoor enjoyment fundraising for communities and projects such as Cumbria Community Foundation Flood Appeal, Mountain Rescue and other voluntary services who played a vital role in helping during the devastating floods in December 2015. And it doesn’t stop there, as the launch of a county-wide event scheduled for February 2017 is promised. This future Grand Day Out will be bigger, better and involve many more communities than ever before. granddayoutcumbria.org.uk
Wearings bookshop Ambleside closed Ambleside bookshop Wearings, well known to walkers because of its huge selection of guidebooks and maps, has closed down. The shop, on Lake Road, held a closing down sale over the August bank holiday and into early September. There are now just two book shops in the town, Fred Holdsworth and Henry Roberts. 4
The storm which struck Cumbria on Saturday 5 December last year was a double-whammy for the popular inn on the north shore of Windermere; as the lake was rising inexorably the premises was hit by a road flood from the rear.
“But we’re back in business and the response since we have reopened has been wonderful,” said manager Ann-Marie Baker. “We would like to thank all our customers who have been so patient.”
Windermere is hosting one of the few northern “Walk for Freedom” events on the 15th of October this year. Organised by A21, a global anti-human trafficking organisation, the purpose of the event is to shine a spotlight on the 27 million men, women, and children who are still TRAPPED IN SLAVERY today. The Walk For Freedom exists to eradicate modernday slavery, a global reality that affects every continent and economic structure. The goal of the #WalkForFreedom is to take a united stance that will turn awareness into action. The true multiplication of this freedom message will be seen around the world through social media coverage and distributed on social media. Last year A21 organised 200 walks in 28 countries and hope to raise even more funds and awareness with their 3rd annual Walk For Freedom 2016. Christine Caine, A21’s

A trip to the large bar reveals the work that has gone into the new-look area; the bar itself is brickfaced and water sealed, and the stone flooring also has been designed
to withstand any future flooding. “And we’ve installed smaller tables so we can move them quicker if we have to,” said AnnMarie. “Hopefully it won’t come to that.”

Founder, says, “One step at a time. One pound at a time. One life at a time. We will abolish modern day slavery.” The Walk For Freedom’s key distinguishing factor is a single-file line of participants dressed in black, with black tape covering their mouths to represent the 27 million slaves who have no voice. As the line moves through the town information about human trafficking is distributed to onlookers. The Walk For Freedom in Windermere will be taking
place at 11 am on the 15th October, starting at The Lakes School in Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere (Check-in Time: From 9:30 am to 10:30 am), and finishing at Bowness Pier. A free ferry will return participants to Brockhole Visitor Centre near to The Lakes School. Participant are asked to wear all black, including the Walk For Freedom T-shirt, if purchased. Have you ‘Herd’ the latest... The countdown to the Lake District National Park Authority’s bid for World Heritage status continued in the pouring rain at Ambleside Sports. The authority’s chief executive Richard Leafe posed with an ‘I’ve Herd’ campaign hessian bag and told Windermere Now that the final decision will be taken next year in Poland. “July 2017 in Krakow,” he said. “Fingers crossed!” The ‘I’ve Herd’ campaign includes car stickers with the popular Herdy logo

lost, was the car in trouble or perhaps they had a family emergency and needed to get in touch with somebody urgently? I couldn’t help myself, curiosity gets the better of me and a polite “are you alright there” tumbles from my lips. “Pokemon” comes the response. Clearly I needn’t have worried too much then. Further down the road a couple are sitting in their car attending to their own electronic devices. Needless to say I felt one conversation about computer generated creatures was enough for one day and my dog was impatient to try and ‘catch ‘em all’. Total dog training Thinking about getting a dog but not sure which breed? Renowned Cumbrian based dog trainer, Ingrid Grayling, offers this advice. Owning a dog is a wonderful thing, dogs provide lasting companionship, unconditional love, and of course, a dog will make sure you get out and take walks every day. Living with a dog can also help to boost your social skills and the confidence of children and adults alike, but the decision to bring home a dog warrants very careful consideration. So what should you consider before purchasing a dog? Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and not all breeds are the same; some dogs need more exercise than others, and some breeds may be predisposed to living with a family. Also, some dogs are great for flat living, while some need a little more space to feel at home. Choosing a breed that matches with your lifestyle is absolutely vital otherwise you could end up with a very unhappy dog, and a potentially stressful situation. You should consider the size of your home, how much time you have to train
the dog, and how much time you can dedicate to walking it each day (and this depends on the breed and what it needs), do you get a female or male dog, and how will the dog fit into your daily life? These are just some of the questions you need to consider before purchasing your new pet. Getting the right advice from a professional dog expert such as Ingrid Grayling who offers this service, could be very helpful and prevent making the wrong decision. Remember every dog deserves the right loving home.

the Tour ‘struggles’ through Ambleside Fans watch the big screen
Mark Cavendish leads team mate Steve Cummings through the crowds
The struggle begins for the riders
They came to see cycling legends Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, but at the end of a momentous day for British cycling the real star of the show was Ambleside and the narrow road up the fearsome fellside above it known as The Struggle.
A
s a test of a professional rider’s ability to scale inclines of 25% (that’s 1 in 4 in old money!) The Struggle will take some beating.
Don’t just take our word for it. Sky rider Nicolas Roche, son of former Tour De France winner Stephen Roche, said on TV after the stage: “It was definitely a struggle, but I think there should be a mountain-top finish there one day!” There was a sense that something special was brewing as Ambleside started filling up with visitors earlier than even on a bank holiday weekend, and with the road to Kirkstone Pass closed to motorised traffic from 9am there began a steady stream of pedestrians and cyclists heading up the three-mile climb to the third highest public house in England (at 1.460ft). Down in the town 200 or more cycling fans watched the race unfold on a huge screen as the riders raced through Keswick, sprinted in Grasmere and headed towards Ambleside. One by one motorcycles with blue flashing lights came up the hill; then the lead cars...
then a huge roar as the leading group of cyclists charged up the steep incline. The charging didn’t last long as the gradient increased and the lactic acid build-up in tired legs kicked in. And then they were gone and all eyes turned back to see how far the chasing group were behind: 20 seconds... 30... 40... then an even louder roar as the unmistakeable figure of sprinter extraordinaire Mark Cavendish appeared – leading his team mate Steve Cummings like a man possessed. The wily Cummings later caught up with the leaders on the descent to Troutbeck Bridge and broke away with Belgian rider Julien Vermote between Bowness and Plumgarths. The two came into Kendal neck-andneck, turned right onto the brutal finishing hill of Beast Banks with barely a wheel between them, and the massive crowds lining the run-in shouted and hollered for an English win. It was not to be; Vermote rode clear in the final 250 yards and claimed the race leader’s yellow jersey at the end of an extraordinary day of cycling.
Andrew Hewitt’s creations brighten up the centre of town
Paul McDougall’s shocking-pink bike
In the build up to the big day a number of colourful bikes were put up around Ambleside. Top marks for creativity must go to Andrew Hewitt of the Regent Hotel in Waterhead. The most colourful bike of them all – which also was lit up at night – was Paul McDougall’s on Lake Road; in shocking-pink and perched halfway up a tree.

“Ticket machines should be thrown in the Lake” FOLLOWING OUR RECENT ARTICLE on the new “and improved” ticketing arrangements on the Windermere cable ferry we have received letters from angry residents and a response from local SLDC Councillor Ben Berry.
W
indermere Councillor Ben Berry has suggested that the new Windermere Ferry Ticket machines should be dumped in the Lake. The new ticket machines have caused misery and annoyance to thousands of residents and visitors. After being installed in late June and the machines have been the subject of hundreds of complaints and have caused reduced crossings due to delays. The machines are seen as overly complicated with customers having to navigate multiple menus with little instruction to simply purchase one ticket. Yesterday Cumbria County Council finally gave in to community pressure and said they would have a member of staff to
operate the machines for customers for “the rest of the Summer”. Windermere Councillor Ben Berry said this wasn’t a solution “This is classic Cumbria County Council: They hoped this failed digitisation exercise would make things easier and save wages but the opposite has happened with using the service now more complicated and with an increased cost to taxpayers. If the Leadership of the Council had any business sense, or common sense, we would have a customer focused solution that maximised the enjoyable use of this valuable highway crossing, instead we see politicians ducking and sticking their heads in the sand. These ticket machines should be thrown in the Lake and users should receive an apology for this complete mess.”
Dear Editor
YOUR SAY
Cannot pay on the boat. Have to get out of your car, rain or shine. Additional staff reqd to explain the machines, which are relatively complex given the range of ticket types. Oh and have you noticed how the services has slowed down? Used to have 15, 30 & 45 minute wait signs. Then 20 40 & 60. Having just come back from Dartmouth where the ferries (one each way) operate a rapid service through much busier and tidal water, it does beg the question why Cumbria County Council are not being held to account by any Authority or Highways for the current fiasco. Either our ferry is part of the road network, or it’s a toy. Can someone please clarify? Yours sincerely Alan Piper Coniston

Dear Editor
YOUR SAY
I read with interest and renewed frustration and anger your article highlighting the debacle that is now the ticketing system for the Windermere ferry. I concur with everything in your article and add a few further points of complete frustration with the new process. I live in Far Sawrey and regularly rely on the ferry service to connect with public transport, bus and rail network which is run on a timetable - after writing to the ferry operators Amey recently about the ticket farce and delays they inform me there is no longer a timetable just a start and finish time each day for the ferry service. The service used to be fairly reliable (barring strong winds) with 3 crossings per side (6 in total per hour) it is routinely now down to 1 or 2 crossings per side per hour - so must also be losing money and inefficient. I can no longer rely on the service and have to allow significant extra time to make journeys. I also think there is excessive signage on both sides of the lake now required and increased in order to advise passengers to purchase tickets before boarding because they were not doing so... not the look really required for south Lakeland I would have thought? It is a disgrace the amount of money had to be spent on signs every few meters to inform passengers of a new ticket process. There are now more staff required to operate the ferry - helping customers navigate the ticket machine (which is very complicated and outdated methods of payment), staff to walk down the queue before allowing cars to board only to punch a hole in the ticket (for what purpose I have no idea), passenger staff member and driver. Double the amount of staff from 2/3 to 4/5 I have seen. The people who administer this system have clearly not seen the efficiency of how the staff were able to operate the ferry before the installation of the new ticket machines. They have, I will say succeeded in many things; spoiling the landscape with excessive road signs, inefficient and reducing an essential service to locals and tourists, no doubt setting the course for a price increase to account for the reduced number of crossings. I genuinely feel for the hard working ferry staff having to deal with such a ridiculous management who think the new ticketing system is progress.. Great work !! Angry Far Sawrey resident. Dear Editor
YOUR SAY
I totally agree with the comments in your magazine “Windermere Now” regarding the new ticketing system. Why on earth change something that was straightforward and easy? I wonder what the logic was in creating what is now a difficult, time consuming and very annoying system ? We are locals and use the ferry fairly frequently by car and by foot. Visitors are obviously struggling to use the new system if they can find it in the first place! When we last used it, there were council folk there to help but it must be far more expensive than the old system as these people would have to be paid. There are still the usual two people on the ferry. Then people were having to leave their cars to pay, causing traffic hold ups. I feel this is a dreadful system which should be scrapped. A report earlier this year very clearly pointed to the Agency itself being the problem and called on it to get its act together and sort things out. I was particularly annoyed to receive a letter from Andrea Leadsom, the new Minister in charge of Defra who continued to make excuses. She claimed that the delays were down to the “complex” nature of the tasks involved in sorting out the claims. We know from the report that much of the problem is down to the “complex” way that the Agency chooses to run itself. I will be following this up with the Minister as soon as Parliament is back in session.

Farmers are experiencing their lowest incomes in nearly a decade. In the past year their incomes fell by about 29% on average. That is a massive fall in anyone’s income. Many farmers who still have not received the money that they were due at the end of 2015 are those who farm the fells around the Lake District. Part of the explanation is the failure of the Rural Payments Agency to do its job properly. Given the already low incomes of these farms often provide this is unfair.

I have been keeping up the pressure on HSBC to change their mind over the decision to close their branch in Windermere. The Kendal branch of HSBC is at the top of a steep flight of steps which many elderly and disabled people struggle to climb. If you bank with HSBC and find climbing steps a bit of a challenge then the nearest branch you can actually get to will become the one in Lancaster. This means people who originally banked with HSBC in Ambleside have gone from having a branch on their doorstep to having to travel for nearly an hour to do your banking. This is simply unreasonable and I have written to them again to tell them this.

Dear Sir, The Northern country cheese farmers who gave their name to Keswick have now declared war on Windermere by kidnapping Arthur Ransome and claiming him as their own. Notwithstanding that Arthur was educated in Windermere and wrote his first book Swallows and Amazons whilst living here, drawing on the familiar geography of Windermere and Coniston, they have taken the new film of that book as referring to them. Just because the magic of film
required that the locations be somewhere backward and old fashioned (Derwent Water, where else?) they have not only “bigged-up” their nonexistent connection to AR, but have had the temerity to have held the premier of the film in that strange little town. Here in Windermere, the Royalty cinema would have been the perfect venue for a star-studded gala premiere with a real connection to the author and his stories. Can we trust those northcountry folk with any of our heritage? Name and address supplied

Windermere Police Woman Attacked Thank you for the update on this sickening incident and I do hope the Police Officer makes a full recovery both physiologically and psychologically and can continue in the important role she and colleagues perform on a daily basis. Those responsible ought to hang their heads in shame and they should be appropriately punished, maybe having to live with their disgusting behaviour for the rest of their lives may be enough, but what will society think of them, should we call them cowards, bullies, drunken or just bloody idiots. What does surprise me is how the officer’s line manager ordered or permitted her to go out on patrol alone, for during the summer months with warmer weather and lighter evenings there is an increased number of people on the streets. This is even more so in popular holiday places such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick and I would have thought the Chief Constable would have trebled the number of officers on duty in these popular areas at this time of year. SCHOOL REPORT
The best kest in Cumbria Throughout the summer students on the Environmental and Land Based Science course enjoyed fine, dry weather. However this luck eventually failed and an unusually wet day prevailed towards the end of the summer term. The stone kest is one of the highlights of the outdoor classroom and despite the rain good progress was made in its ongoing construction. Situated at the end of the school field the kest was started by volunteers and the Lake District National Park Authority in May. A lot of preparation was needed to start with, moving stones and Windermere School is celebrating its best GCSE and IGCSE results in over a decade. Surpassing a 95% pass rate at A* to C is the highest that the school has achieved since it went co-educational and non-selective in 2000. It is also significantly higher than the national average of 66.6%. This success follows hot on the heels of an impressive set of results for Year 13 pupils, all of whom passed the International Baccalaureate. At Windermere School more than half of the students’ results were graded at A* or A, and for the first time since 2000, there was a 100% pass rate in English and Mathematics. Special mentions go to the following Local students: Ella Handy (9A*, A); Daisy Southern (9A*, A); Nuala Murray (8A*, 2A); Maisie Bullock (8A*, A, B); and Matilda Salisbury (7A*, 3A). The school offers a mixture 14

digging turf. Unlike a dry stone wall, a stone kest contains turf and stone, with soil in the middle.
Eventually when finished a hedge will be planted and so the kest will be a perfect habitat for lots of wildlife. Rain stopped play just before lunch due to not being able to see! After lunch spirits were high again and the group worked hard to complete the second layer of the kest.
The Environmental and Land Based Science group should be proud of their achievements and hopefully the kest will stand the test of time and be there for years to come. Thanks to the National Trust for supplying the stone for the kest and Andrew Wilkinson, a ranger from the LDNPA, for his support in this project. Without his time and effort this project would not have been possible.

of IGCSEs and GCSEs which suits pupils well. Universities draw no distinction between the two examination types and Headmaster, Ian Lavender, feels that this mixture ensures that the school can continue to offer a breadth of courses to the students, suited to their aspirations. Mr. Lavender said: “This is a fantastic set of results for our Year 11’s and a very satisfying end to the academic year for the school. Combined
with the success of our IB students earlier in the summer, this must be the best year we have ever had in terms of examination results. We are a non-selective school, so to achieve these results are a testament to the hard work of both the students and the staff. We wish all our Year 11’s onward success, as we welcome a new cohort of students into the year. We hope that they can continue the good work.”

Young people going to college or university this autumn are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated against meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) due to the MenW bug, one of the most aggressive and deadly strains of Meningitis. Young people going on to university or college are particularly at risk of meningitis and septicaemia because they mix with so many other students, some of whom are unknowingly carrying the bacteria. GPs will be writing to the following groups to encourage them to get vaccinated at their surgery as soon as possible: ll all 17 and 18 year olds (school year 13; born between 1/9/1997 to 31/08/1998); ll 19-year-olds who missed getting vaccinated last year (anyone born between 1/9/1996 to 31/08/1997) The disease can develop suddenly and progress rapidly. Early symptoms include headache, vomiting, muscle pain, fever, and cold hands and feet. Students should be alert to the signs and symptoms and should not wait for a rash to develop before seeking medical attention urgently. Students are also encouraged to look out for their mates, particularly if they go to their room unwell.

Remember the Golden Rule! It took publican John Lockley “many years” but he finally persuaded Robinsons brewery to commission a new sign for the popular Golden Rule in Ambleside. It’s based on a very old photograph of a former sign that is believed to have hung outside the pub on Smithy Brow in the 19th century. “A lot of people have commented on it,” said John. “I like the lettering, too, on the other side of the sign. It’s all a big improvement.”

Do You Know A Craft Ale When You Taste One? As if they needed any more accreditation following their win at the Great British Beer Festival, local craft ale experts, Coniston Brewing Co., have been awarded an official stamp of approval and authenticity from SIBA (The Society of Independent Brewers). The organisation aims to help real craft ale brewers to be recognised for their efforts, and their ‘quality not quantity’ approach, typically adopted by large multi-national breweries. The hope is that by displaying this stamp on their merchandise, craft brewers can help the public to easily differentiate
between true craft ales and mass-produced craft ale look-alikes, thus supporting smaller-scale breweries and helping people experience the quality of taste that many craft brewers, such as Coniston Brewing Co., can achieve.

British made underwear is big biz A small Windermerebased business, which makes a range of men’s and women’s underwear that offers great fit and quality for a variety of shapes and sizes and using natural materials, has been named among the 100 small businesses in the UK. Created by Shirley Crisp, Unibu designs are created from materials found in Britain and manufactured in British factories. The company is among the select number of businesses to be featured by the Small Business Saturday campaign leading up to Small Business Saturday on Dec 3rd. “About seven years ago, I definitely got the
impression that there was no underwear manufacturing taking place in Britain,” explains Shirley. “I was starting to get an inkling from talking to many manufacturers that manufacturing could come back to Britain. So I have been developing
Unibu over the last two years while running my own lingerie shop in Windermere.”
Shirley has now moved entirely into supplying her designs wholesale to retailers around the country, and also online at www.unibu.co.uk
Epic progress for young business A young company based in Windermere has hit its five year target in just two years. Matt Holmes (34) and Ben Tomlinson (28) set up Epixx in 2014 to supply top of the range audio-visual systems, home cinema, and lighting systems. They now have a staff of six, with a customer base and a turnover they never imagined would happen till at least 2020. In two years they have kitted out some of the most impressive homes, hotels and restaurants in Cumbria. They installed systems for the Church Suites at the Cranleigh Hotel, Bowness; and the new Fizzy Tarte champagne bar in Bowness. They are now the main AV contractor for the NW Design Centre in Manchester,
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST OCTOBER
and have a new deal to install sound systems in VIP boxes at Leicester Tigers rugby ground. Matt, who is from Bolton le Sands, teamed up Ben, originally from Bentham, who was working on electrical and AV jobs. “I was selling the kit that he was fitting,” says Matt. They then collaborated with Lakeland Fells Furniture, who design and build the surrounding furniture for some of their installations. “We have different skills but seem to work very well together,” says Ben. “We have worked very hard, but I think we’re both surprised at how successful the business has proved.” Says Matt: “We are aware that we’re working with technology which is constantly changing, so
we create good quality systems which will last a long time, but can be updated.”
They echo the mission statement of Steve Jobs, the Apple computer pioneer: “Design is not just what it looks and feels like, design is how it works. All the rooms we create – homes, hotels, offices – look beautiful and everything will operate in harmony.”
Coniston Local Celebrates Law Success

Fresh young graduate, Holly Nelson of Coniston, is enjoying a summer of great news following her successful completion of a law degree at Sheffield Hallam University.
Members of the Lake District Japan Forum will fly to Osaka at the end of September to meet with key decision makers in the Japanese travel industry.
After celebrating the wellearned result of a first class law degree, Holly was subsequently awarded two very prestigious scholarships from Gray’s Inn (one of the four Inns of Court, of which all Judges and Barristers must be members). The first of these is the Hebe Plunkett award, and the second is the Prince of Wales Scholarship. Combined, these awards amount to £17,000 of funding towards further training to become a barrister. One
person being awarded both of these scholarships is news in itself, however Holly was also the first ever law student from her University to be awarded such a major accolade, making her success all the sweeter. A massive congratulations on all your hard work and success Holly!

They will showcase all the latest activities and venue developments that the Lake District has to offer to international travellers. It is a chance for the Japan Forum to establish new contacts and develop stronger links with tourism operators in Japan. “Japan is still one of our primary markets for visitors coming from overseas,” says Colin Fox who is chairman of the Lake District Japan Forum. “Previous missions have helped us increase Japanese visitors, sometimes by more than 25%. Japanese tourists are popular visitors for many Cumbrian businesses, as they are so enthusiastic to soak up the history
and heritage of the area as well as the stunning landscapes and scenery.” The delegation includes managers from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, Mountain Goat Tours/Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel, Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Windermere Lake Cruises, The National Trust and the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. The visit is also being sponsored by Grasmere Gingerbread and the Royal Mint, both of whom will be exhibiting their products, and the Lakes Distillery. This will be the group’s tenth business visit to the country. * “This gentleman will pay for everything”

When you walk into the Kelsick Centre the first thing you notice is the smell – gorgeous fragrances from a sea of blooms assail the senses. This is the Ambleside Horticultural & Craft Society summer show, but as its official title suggests – Ambleside Summer Flower, Produce & Craft Show – every year there is much more than just flowers on offer. All around the edge of the main hall was home-made produce of the lip-smacking variety: cakes, pastries, chocolate brownies and more. Oh to be a judge! Talking of which, Joanne Dann was on hand to pass an expert verdict on flowers and ferns and this time it was official. The owner of nearby Lily-Lou’s florest was drafted in for the daffodil and spring flower show at the last moment when a judge failed to turn up but got a little more notice this time! Joanne found time to enter an old family portrait which won class 144, ‘a portrait

HEALTH & LEISURE
Rydal Show There was an air of wonderful, comfortable familiarity about this year’s 113th show. Rydal Sheepdog Trials and Hound Show. Behind the scenes, show secretary Sarah Hoggarth and a number of assistants beavered away looking somewhat overworked. When asked how long she had held the position, Sarah blinked – then turned to her calculator to work out the answer! Similar calculations were needed to work out the best sheepdogs as they tried to cajole four frisky herdies into a pen within a time limit. A typical effort came from fouryear old border collie Ernie, whose owner Brenda Helliwell whistled and yelled in the secret tongue of shepherds and was so near, yet so far, in completing the task. “It doesn’t always work out in the end,” she said ruefully as she ruffled Ernie’s ears. “Maybe next year.”

Fell Foot fleet of foot The popular parkrun at Fell Foot near Newby Bridge has been judged a successful and smooth-running event by official adjudicator, Paolo Dale. The 5k timed run, part of a worldwide series that takes place every Saturday morning at 9, is coming up to its second birthday at Fell Foot. Mr Dale noted the excellent relationship between the parkrun volunteer organisers and the National Trust which owns the land and supports the event. Mr Dale, who actually ran the route as well as talking to the organisers, said: “The normal course had to be changed due to another event taking part at the site. It is apparent
that the National Trust were keen for parkrun to go ahead as normal “It is apparent that there is a good working relationship between the event team and their hosts which promotes the smooth running of parkrun.” He added: “The event team are clearly motivated, friendly and welcoming to all who take part. This is particularly important during the tourist season when a lot of runners are visitors. ”
Event director Ron Eadington said: “This is a great report with two significant positives, our wonderful core team and our good relationship with the National Trust.” Fell Foot is attracting more than 250 runners during the summer season. All ages and abilities are welcome, and the event is free. It’s necessary to register online first and download a barcode: parkrun.org. uk/register

..have criticised unprepared climbers and walkers, saying they are heading for a year of record call-outs. The Wasdale rescue team said it was “shocked” at how walkers lacked “basic” outdoor skills. In one week week the team dealt with six emergencies in 12 hours including 18 people stuck at the stream crossing on Lingmell Gill. So far this year the Wasdale team has handled 80 call-outs. This is more than it dealt with in the whole of last year. Spokesman Richard Warren said it was going to be another record year for emergencies. “We have been trying to reduce the numbers of avoidable incidents with little success,” he said. The Lake District is again heading for a record year for callouts and it is becoming quite shocking the level of ill-preparedness and lack of basic outdoor skills necessary to safely get up a mountain. “We are all volunteers and there is a limit to what we can do.” He added: “We’ve had 80 ‘999’ calls since the start of the year, 20 of these in the first three weeks of August and at least 14 avoidable.” The team deals with calls to Scafell Pike, which is the highest mountain in England and the central peak in the popular Three Peaks Challenge.
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST OCTOBER
Advice from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team ll Select a route suitable for even the weakest party members. ll Get a weather forecast. ll Leave a route card with your details, the intended route, your equipment and estimated time of arrival with someone responsible. ll Wear suitable clothing - warm, windproof and waterproof whatever the time of year. Wear good walking boots with suitable soles. ll Carry basic survival equipment, food and spare clothes for the time of year. Remember conditions can change quickly on the hills and even a mid summer day can have gale force winds and rain ll Always carry a map, compass and torch and learn how to navigate before going onto the high fells.
Not pulling any punches
The women of Windermere are preparing for battle. On Monday and Wednesday nights they attack a punishing routine of Boxercise exercises to get their fitness levels up. At the old squash court in Queen’s Park, Windermere, they line up to batter their trainer, Gary Tomlinson between doing exercise circuits designed to give them strength, speed and endurance. After the 2012 Olympics, when women’s boxing gained
a new audience, the exercise side of the sport has become very popular. More than a dozen women turn up for every women-only session. There is no pressure to progress to actual boxing competition. Most just do it for the intensive work-out. “I enjoy it. It’s a great way to get fit and healthy after having had 2 kids.” said 38 year-old Edel who has a 7 year-old and a 2 year-old. A new monthly National Trust running initiative is being launched at Claife Viewing Station, on 23 October. The Trust10 is a free 10k event which hopes to encourage people to get outdoors, explore special places and take up a new challenge. Held at 9am, on the 4th Sunday of each month, the NT team in the south Lakes have devised a 10k route along Windermere’s west shore track, which will allow runners to take in the striking lake views whilst running on a good surface for the whole route. “We’re really excited to be taking on the Trust10 here on Windermere’s west shore; it will be a great opportunity for people to have a regular goal each month, as well as a chance to explore this special place. We want as many people to enjoy their
local environment as possible, so hosting the Trust10 each month, will hopefully bring a new audience to this special part of the lakes”, said Paul Kear, National Trust Countryside Manager for the South Lakes. The first Trust10 starting at Claife Viewing Station will take place at 9am on 23 October. The cosy café in the Courtyard at Claife will be open serving freshly made hot food and drinks. ART & MUSIC
Wordsmith walking with Wordsworth
Will Crisp (18) from Windermere, and a former pupil of the Lakes School won the first Rydal Mount Wordsworth poetry competition and has won a place to study at Cambridge, at the same college that William Wordsworth attended. In 2013 Will was the winner of the inaugural poetry competition for young people. His poem, Scrap of Iron, was considered by the judges to be outstanding and showed great maturity. He has just gained A levels in English Language, Literature and French and will go on to study modern and medieval languages at St John’s College, Cambridge. Christopher Wordsworth, the great great great great grandson of the poet and one of the judges each year, said: “This is thrilling news. It is always good to hear the progress of our young poets, and it is a delightful chance that Will is going to study at St John’s.” Will, who says that his course will contain plenty of cultural studies and literature alongside French and German, said: “It’s really exciting that it’s actually going to happen. I’m a bit daunted, because I know there’s such a lot of work to be done, but I’m glad the waiting is over.”

The mighty Wurlitzer organ in the Royalty cinema in Bowness on Windermere is about to go stratospheric at a charity film showing of “The Titfield Thunderbolt” on the 19 October. The restored organ is the only one in Europe still being used in a working cinema. It was originally at a theatre in Ohio but was shipped to the UK in 1934 when ‘talkies’ ended the era of silent films in the USA. Restored and installed in the cinema by a group of local organ enthusiasts, it was originally placed on the floor to the left of the stage. Nearly all Wurlitzer organs installed in cinemas before the Second World War were placed on lifts so that all the audience could see them as they rose from beneath the stage with the organist playing. Paul Adorian, Managing Director of AID (Association for the Independence of Disabled People), had organised a previous charity film show at the Royalty and, remembering his childhood excitement at seeing Wurlitzer organs ascending and playing, felt that this Royalty Wurlitzer needed to do the same. He persuaded two companies to donate
Ready for take-off
and install a scissor lift mechanism beneath the organ so that the Royalty’s Wurlitzer could not only be heard throughout the cinema but could also be seen in all its glory. The scissor lift was donated by Skyjack UK. The installation was carried out by Nationwide Platforms Ltd. Sir Chris Bonington, no stranger to heights himself, will formally christen and launch the Wurlitzer, but will leave the playing to organist, Mark Latimer. AID is seeking to raise funds from the charity event, not only to progress a clinical trial on a drug to
help people suffering from motor neurone disease but also to assist with its work on persuading hotels and public buildings to improve their facilities for disabled people. Tickets for the event are priced at £15. For credit/ debit card sales telephone 015394 48459 or send your cheque, (made payable to AID), to AID, Applethwaite Lodge, The Common, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1JQ.

Famous faces on the fells
The Lake District’s premier film maker and the country’s most famous mountaineer have been out and about in Great Langdale. Movie director Terry Abrahams, known for his two Life of a Mountain films about Scafell Pike and Blencathra, was shooting scenes for his latest film, a bio-pic about Yorkshireman Alan Hinkes, the only Briton to have scaled all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks. Abrahams posted a picture on Facebook of Hinkes ghyll scrambling in Great Langdale, as well as a video of him rock climbing in Borrowdale where he pretended to lose his grip on the crags, much to his own amusement. Both men were in Ambleside for the Festival of the Fells
Environmental Photographer of the Year
Terry Abrahams, left, and Alan Hinkes
from September 22-25; Hinkes, the patron of the festival, gave a talk at Zeffirelli’s, followed by Abrahams introducing his movie Life of a Mountain: Blencathra and taking questions from the audience after its screening.
“The last night of the proms” Flookburgh Band, under their Musical Director, John Iveson, will be presenting their ever- popular concert “The Last Night of the Proms”. In addition to Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem there will be “The Armed Man” , 633 Squadron, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many other favourites. . Enjoy the very best of brass band music and raise the Priory roof in an evening of patriotic celebration and flag waving. Saturday 1 October: 7.30pm. Cartmel Priory: Admission - £10 (on the door) includes refreshments and a flag.
Grizedale Forest continues to foster its reputation for relevant art and not only does it play host to over 40 permanent sculptures but once again the Environmental Photographer of the Year (EPOTY) exhibition has returned, running until 1st January 60 environmental photographs have been shortlisted; whittled down from from the submission of 10,000 images by photographers and filmmakers from around the world. The exhibition is supported for the fourth year running by the Forestry Commission. EPOTY photographs and films reflect the urgent environmental and social issues that surround us today. The competition
was launched in 2007 by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management with the aim of celebrating both amateurs and professionals. Judge, Dr David Haley said “Year on year it gets better and better. Once again I was amazed at the diversity of subject matter and the diversity of photographers – seeing the extraordinary within the mundane and revealing the way extreme environments are becoming the new normal”. This year there are three specific prize themes: Changing Climate, Built Environment, and People, Nature and Economy. Grizedale Visitor Centre opening times, September & October 10am to 5pm.
Hill Top art exhibition A new Cumbrian exhibition this autumn showcases drawings of several modern day Beatrix Potters, to celebrate 150 years since her birth. Women’s Work, by South Lakes born, London based artist Freya Pocklington has been commissioned by the National Trust as part of its Trust New Art programme. Women’s Work will feature at Hill Top this autumn: this is the first time the National Trust has displayed a contemporary exhibition inside Beatrix Potter’s original home. “By bringing contemporary art installations into historic
buildings such as Hill Top, we hope to add a new and exciting layer to our visitors’ experience” says Hannah Pierce, the Trust’s Contemporary Arts Programme Manager. “My aim was to celebrate the achievements of women aged 35+ working with animals that are underrepresented in portraiture. All the ladies in Women’s Work started in a totally different career and none came from a farming background. I found this really interesting and very Special Place Wicken Fen comparable to Beatrix Potter. It must have been daunting to make a move like this” Special Place Wicken Fen says Freya.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust
be warmly welcomed and will have an enjoyable evening.
Talks planned for Autumn: October 13th: ‘Opening Your Garden for the National Gardens Scheme’ Diane Hewitt, NGS Cumbria CO November 10th: ’A Journey Around South Cumbria’s Reserves’, Peter Jones, CWT Reserves Officer
Ranger Diary My name is Amy and I am the new Long Term Volunteer here with the National Trust South Lakes Ranger team. As part of my degree at Aberystwyth University I am undertaking a placement in a relevant industry to my chosen degree of Countryside Management and Conservation. The time I spend with the National Trust will be just as important, if not more than the time I have spent in lectures, putting into practice the skills and knowledge I’ve learnt so far. Our recent conservation work has been extending fences on the west shore of the lake into Windermere. These fences are not to exclude people from areas of land, but cattle. Cattle can prevent natural regeneration of woodlands from occurring by grazing off young shoots from the trees. With the extension of the fences these shoots will be allowed to grow and an understory develop. Working in water is much harder than working in bare ground as very quickly the water becomes cloudy with the disturbance of the lake bed. Secondly there are many rocks, all of which affect how easily or straight it is to get a post into the ground. Once the posts are in the ground and up to the wobble test, it is time to attach the rails; for the majority this was the easy bit but hammering in water is a new and weird experience. For this task waders were a must, as we all found out! To find out more about volunteering with the National Trust visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/volunteer

A £50,000 National Heritage Lottery Fund project to reveal Cumbria’s Top 50 Trees has almost reached its halfway point. The 18-month endeavour to highlight and celebrate the public’s favourite trees in England’s second largest county is unearthing some fascinating specimens. Nearly 100 nominations have been received from across the county - from Barrow in the south to Carlisle in the north. Forestry expert and project co-coordinator for Cumbria’s Top 50 Trees Iris Glimmerveen said: “Whilst some nominated trees are healthy magnificent specimens, others have been damaged by storms or withered by old age and one entry only has part of its trunk and roots left.”

If you are interested in Natural History or Conservation do come along to one of the meetings. You do not need to be a member of CWT to attend, you will

Cumbria’s Top 50 Trees
Volunteers gather scientific data about the tree as well as uncovering the often personal reasons why an individual nominated the tree. Whilst eventually all the information about all the nominated trees will be sent to the official organisations in Cumbria charged with looking after our tree heritage, we are also revealing people’s
emotional connections to trees. One woman nominated an ash tree near Coniston that was struck by lightning many decades ago. “Despite being sliced in half it continues to send out new shoots every year and the nominator said its tenacity and survival against the odds helped inspire her in a battle with lung cancer,” said Iris.
Talk talk on the Lynx lynx
Family rides for defibrillator The family of a muchloved former Lake District publican and businessman stopped off at Grasmere to view a defibrillator that has been installed at a former red phone box in the centre of the village in his honour.
Everyone is welcome to attend the next meeting on 13 October at 7:30 pm of the Ambleside Natural History Society to hear the a topical talk by Ian Convery at the Beehive Building, Ambleside University campus, Rydal Road, Ambleside. Should the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) be reintroduced to the UK?
Eurasian lynx are charismatic top predators in woodland ecosystems. They perform valuable ecosystem services (e.g., by reducing deer damage to woodlands) and pose little threat to humans or livestock. Professor Ian Convery from the University of Cumbria and Lynx UK Trust will outline the case for a trial reintroduction of lynx to the UK.
Mike Hodgson, who when younger was a renowned fell runner, died in August 2015 aged 57 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest while out biking near his Cumbria home. He used to run the Langstrath Inn in Borrowdale before his wife Sara and family moved to St John’s in the Vale. Earlier this month Mike’s widow and family cycled 350 miles from the Lakes to Acton in West London, ending the ride at the headquarters of ‘The Collective UK’, the gourmet yoghurt company he founded. The ride was to help finance ten ‘defib phone boxes’ nationwide.

The Bell Tower Project Fund Our local Hawkshead Parish Church, St. Michael and All Angels, which is a Grade 1 listed building, urgently needs serious/restoration work on its bell tower. A substantial sum of money, (£70,000), needs to be raised in advance of the work being able to take place, this is obviously an enormous demand to make on the rural community and congregation. So we are fundraising. For those unfamiliar with its history, it is a 14/15th
century building (The Tower is the oldest part) and one of the best late medieval churches in the north west. The church is largely unaltered since 1585 and it is the principal architectural feature of the Hawkshead valley. There is serious water damage, the walls are damp, plaster and paint are coming away inside, and a large monument had to be removed for interim repairs because iron fixings have rusted because of the dampness.
Windermere’s Di Berry shares an amazing testimony Well known Christian from the Lakes Christian Centre, Di Berry, agreed to share her testimony with us at The Filling Station.
Di was born in Bermuda and trained as a nurse in the UK, where she met and married local hotelier Simon Berry. In 1984, while they were on holiday in New Zealand, God broke into their lives in a miraculous and powerful way. Di at last found the Father she had spent her life searching for - Abba - our Father God, who
sets us free and brings abundant life. Our October speakers at The FILLING STATION Geoff and Kate King, re-established Hawkshead Hill Baptist Church. Kate’s vision for helping needy children became the successful Dream scheme movement. Now living in Chorley, we are privileged to have them at THE MARCHESI CENTRE, Holly Rd. Windermere. 7:30 on Thursday, 20 October. Come along and be blessed. Queries 07584079607

Birthday bash
To celebrate the 140th anniversary of the founding of Mothers’ Union by Mary Sumner in 1876 a service of celebration, led by the Rev. David Wilmott, was held at the Parish Church of St Anne’s, Ings on Tuesday 9th August. It was attended by branches from Windermere, Ings, Staveley, Cartmel and Flookburgh and approximately 60 members were present. It was followed by a sumptuous tea, banners, balloons and birthday cake. Candles were lit and Happy Birthday Mothers’ Union was sung. It was a very happy occasion.
