Oooh. What a picture!

Maternity unit threat: have your say before 4th November

The iconic backdrop of England’s longest lake is becoming increasingly popular with Chinese couples posing for dramatically-staged photos, in front of major British landmarks, in their full wedding attire. In China it is popular to do the wedding photos before the couple get married and then show them at their wedding. Many young Chinese couples are already choosing to travel abroad and have their pictures alongside famous locations like Westminster Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral. With the recent introduction of direct flights from Beijing into Manchester it is now easier than ever before for

Red letter day for town

Things are looking brighter around Ambleside thanks to the efforts of Robin Love, who runs The Hub, which includes the town’s post office. Robin alerted Royal Mail authorities about the sad state of the town’s letterboxes, which were once bright red but had

Chinese visitors to explore the UK’s northern regions.

Typically, the newly-wedsto-be want to celebrate their engagement with a photo shoot on Windermere and a mini cruise on the lake. Jennifer Cormack, Sales & Marketing Manager at Windermere Lake Cruises, says,“It’s fabulous to see that an increasing number of couples are choosing to

include Windermere and the Lake District as part of their pre-wedding photo shoots. It really does show that a ‘steamer’ cruise in the Lakes has a truly international reputation and Chinese couples are embracing it as a must-do experience. We are looking forward to welcoming many more brides and grooms to-be to the waters of Windermere.”

lapsed into moss and lichencovered dullness.

The result was a lick of paint all round, iincluding this Edwardian beauty on Lake Road opposite the junction with Old Lake Road. Keen eyes will notice the markings: ER VII, signifying that its origins lie in the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910) the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

The Helme Chase Maternity unit in Kendal temporarily became a day-centre in March 2014. These changes removed 24hr permanent cover at the unit, moving to an on-call service at night, weekends and bank holidays. Post-natal care was also removed from the unit. Since the changes were introduced, there has been a significant decline the number of births in 12 months from 190 to around 120 – a decrease of 37% at the unit. Now it seems there is a possibility that these changes will become permanent Tim Farron has had various meetings with health bosses and has made his concerns clear. He has now also responded to the public consultation, and is encouraging local people to do the same. The consultation is open until 4th November 2016. Tim said: “Like many local people, I have seen my own children born at this unit and I know just how important it is. South Lakes women deserve better than a watered-down maternity service. “Since the removal of the 24hr service, I have heard of women in labour arriving at the unit before the midwife. These changes damage public confidence in the unit and we can already see that it is driving women away. There is a very real danger that if these trends continue health bosses will decide that the ward is not viable, and will remove this service altogether.” To take part in the consultation, go to www.cumbriaccg.nhs.uk Click on “get-involved” then “Consultation/helme-chase” or email comments to: Communications.Team@ CumbriaCCG.nhs.uk

GO MO IN NOVEMBER

Gentlemen all over the region are preparing to grow their facial hair to raise money and to highlight awareness of men’s health issues. Movember, now in it’s 13th year, is an annual event where men grow a moustache (mo) during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health issues. Men can raise money on their own by simply signing up online or organising a group effort with work colleagues, neighbours or friends to challenge themselves to the hair growing event. Whether it’s the handlebar, the toothbrush or the Salvador Dahli mo growers can express themselves by getting creative with their whiskers. Forget Hipster

beards, moustaches are the way to go! Those unable to grow facial hair or reluctant to forego their clean shaven look can also get involved by hosting an event or taking the Move Challenge eg running, swimming, cycling, walking or climbing their way to fund raising. Participants are also encouraged to try a new sport and challenge themselves to a particular goal. Why not host your own fund-raising event or run in a local race such as the Ambleside Duathlon Dash on 13th November or the Langdale 10K Christmas Pudding run on 3rd December and see how much money you can raise? Those wishing to get involved in the Movember movement can sign up online at Movember.com

Ticket machines breeding

£20.99

Despite causing anger and distress amongst locals and visitors alike, Cumbria County Council are buying two further digital ticket machines, to confuse people at a more productive rate. Instead of taking the weighty local and media criticism on board the Council have doubled-up on the ticket machines. The revelation came after questioning when an officer of the Council stated: “Two new machines have been purchased at an additional cost of nearly £10,000. The digital ticketing scheme will continue.” The machines have been lambasted for causing delays and being overly complicated.

Windermere Councillor Ben Berry warned that the County Council shouldn’t ignore users of the ferry: “It is utterly ridiculous for the Council to ignore the very people they rely on to run this service. Residents tell me it is now easier and quicker to drive round the Lake given the delays the ticket machines are causing to the ferry. I’m not sure if the Council is simply incompetent or they are maliciously sabotaging this vital service.”

‘Orange juggernaut’ smashes car-pull record

Al’s pot shop is now Pete’s (pot shop) Whilst not actually a new business there is certainly a new face in the Lakeland Potteries’ shop in St Martin’s Parade, behind the new Royal Buildings in Bowness.

Fitness coach Ursula Brendling, the inspirational leader of the women’s car pull team who broke their own record for pulling a vehicle all the way from the centre of Ambleside to Kirkstone Pass, has vowed “never again.” “Let’s leave it to another team to see if they can beat our time,” she said. This year’s pull, the team’s third, was part of Festival of the Fells and attracted big crowds in the centre of town, on Kirkstone Road, and all the way

up the 1,300ft climb to Kirkstone culminating in the fearsome 25% zigzags of The Struggle. Towards the summit of Kirkstone Pass the atmosphere was electric as hundreds of supporters willed on the pullers. The team broke their own record for the climb with a blistering 62 minutes and 45 seconds, but the most important figure of the day was the money raised for the Grizedale Chemotherapy Unit at Westmorland General Hospital.

The shop, known to most locals as Alan’s Pot Shop has been there for 25 years. With it’s enormous range of ceramics, some directly from the manufacturers in Stoke on Trent, it has been a haven for the hospitality trade, locals and visitors alike. Alan decided to retire and his long-term friend Pete Simon, a video director, jumped at the chance. A deal was done and Pete, who had lived in Bowness and been at the Lakes School, made the move back from Cheshire after 30 years away from the area. Pete relished the change and the move “home”. He has kept Alan’s range of products, suppliers and relationships in place. Especially the supply of fine bone china that the hospitality

industry likes so much. He says “Hardly a day will go by without someone calling in and telling me how they always came to see Alan to buy things. They really enjoyed the relationship and it’s my goal to keep them just as happy, and coming back to the shop to see me, in the same way.” Pete has created a website, which should be up and running by November, which will carry more than 300 products, but he will be more than thrilled for customers to visit his real shop, and to meet them in person. lakelandpotteries.co.uk

Andrea’s walk for Macmillan

om Airport Transfers fr

South Lakeland Andrea Batten-Gray from Penny Bridge has raised in excess of £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Care. Diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2015, Andrea immediately set about fighting the illness, undergoing six months of aggressive chemotherapy and surgery, including a mastectomy. In April Andrea found out that the cancer was in remission and decided to do something positive for other sufferers. Andrea said, “After I was diagnosed I would meet other mums from school and we would go for a coffee and we came up with the idea of doing a charity walk.” About fifty friends and family started the walk at Windermere School,

Tim’s Column

People of Staveley at risk of losing Crown Jewels.

Thanks everyone who supported me when I ran the Great Langdale Half Marathon to raise money for St John’s Hospice the other week. I ran in a not too embarrassing time of 2 hours and 10 minutes particularly to raise some extra funds for their Hospice at Home service which provides nursing cover for people who want to spend their last days at home. If you would like to sponsor me it is fairly easy just go to the Just Giving website and search on Tim Farron. We need to raise about £30,000 if we are to pay for another nurse so any donation however small will be gratefully received. Issues with our local health provision have, yet again, been taking up much of my time recently. We have seen examples in South Lakeland of ill people being sent home late at night, particularly from the hospital in Lancaster, sometimes to empty properties, sometimes just being left by a taxi at the end of a steep drive. This is quite frankly dangerous. I have written to the Government to ask them what they plan to do to provide a more joined up health service where social care, which is provided by Cumbria County Council, works much more closely with the NHS so we can be sure that people are going home safely. Our local hospital trust is consulting over maternity service provision at the hospital in Kendal. (see article in this issue) I am really worried that this is part of a plan to completely run down all maternity provision in Kendal. Any woman going into labour when living in Windermere or Ambleside would have to drive all the way to Lancaster if they want to have their baby in hospital. I urge you to email your views on this change to Communications. Team@CumbriaCCG.nhs.uk. As ever if I can help with any issues, health related or not, please email me at tim@ timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403.

The Lake District National Park Authority is considering selling a popular local amenity, Craggy Wood, a thick woodland of deciduous trees covering steep crags of rock that give it the name. Just on the opposite side of the River Kent to the village it is, according to local Councillor Arthur Capstick, “Part of the village: the local primary school use it; other groups use it; young people use it - they build shelters - lots of people walk through it. It’s special to us and we just want to be be certain that that is retained for future generations and we don’t want the uncertainty of having to work with some other owner who we - at this stage anyway - don’t have any control or influence over.”

Thanks for your support, Tim

8

Craggy Wood is just one of the latest plots of land the Authority says it would like to sell. They own just 4% of the land in the National Park. Kerry Powell, of the LDNPA said “We wouldn’t be intending to sell this land for commercial use. We are a public body, we are required to keep our land holdings under continual review. Craggy Wood is one that is in good management condition, the access rights are secured,

those protections are in place so in that sense nothing would change if we decided that it is time that it could move on to another responsible owner.” Following a public meeting at which villagers made their feelings perfectly clear the LDNPA will be continuing to review the wood and it’s possible sale until such time that they put the proposal before the members of the LDNPA.

Windermere Town Council The Town Council celebrated the end of summer by putting on the Windermere in Bloom awards ceremony, held on Thursday 22nd September in the Ladyholme Centre. We had fun celebrating the gardeners and growers in our community and everyone went home well fed and watered! I was intrigued to see a letter in the September edition of Windermere Now that expresses concern about cheese farmers, north of Dunmail Raise, kidnapping Arthur Ransome and claiming him for their own. This outburst was triggered by some of the latest Swallows and Amazons film being made on Derwent Water and the premiere being held at the Theatre by the Lake near Keswick. This is an interesting perspective, as Ransome’s juggled geography in the Swallows and Amazons books is undoubtedly centred on the landscapes he knew so well around Coniston Water and Windermere. But Ransome also intended readers to use their imagination. In the 1930s, when the books first appeared, most readers would have had little practical knowledge of the Lake District and would have pictured their own skylines , islands and shores. Ransome did not, however, limit his geography entirely to the southern Lake District. There is evidence, for example, in annotated postcards, that he asked the original illustrator of Swallows and Amazons, Clifford Webb, to base the Peak of Darien on Friar’s Crag near Keswick and mountains at the head of the lake on a view south along Derwent Water. Much of the latest film was indeed made around Coniston and not just Derwent Water. The farm in the film overlooks Coniston Water, the houseboat was moored on the lake, and the secret harbour – albeit rather contrived – was also on Coniston Water. I am a little surprised that your letter writer’s eyebrows were not raised further by the introduction of secret agents and a seaplane, rather than by where the film was made – because they are entirely new to Ransome’s story and were intended, by the script writer, to make the story appeal more to today’s children. Spies apart, much of the film is true to the original story, with charcoal burners, attempts to capture each other’s boats, and the houseboat being burgled. Everyone will have their own view of the film. Purists may not enjoy changes, but I think it deserves credit, not just as a period piece, but because there is a realistic element of stroppy adolescence (rarely detectable in Ransome’s books) and a healthy and welcome dose of children being allowed to take risks (with concerned adults in the background). Let’s enjoy the film for what it is. If it re-energises interest in Arthur Ransome, 50 years after his death, and attracts a new generation of readers to his books, that is a job well done. As for the cheese farmers of Keswick, if they did indeed kidnap Arthur Ransome, I am sure Nancy would be proud of their daring-do! Paul Flint, Arthur Ransome Trust

Dear Editor

New Homes for Local People. We are all very much aware of the problems in the Lake District with regard to housing. Young people, and particularly young families, often find that the cost of rental or purchase is way beyond their income. One result of this is the decline of our local communities as people are forced to move away to find affordable places to live. The Skelwith and Langdale Community Land Trust was formed to seek ways to address this problem. We managed to obtain land at Skelwith Bridge, and, in partnership with Two Castles Housing Association, have made a start on building four houses, three and twobedroomed, alongside the four existing Neum Crag Cottages. We hope that this is just a beginning. We are looking for land which would lend itself to new build, or houses which need to be brought back into use. If you have any ideas or contacts which could help in our search, please let us know. Gordon Baddeley Chair SLCLT 015394 32077 gordonbaddeley@gmail.com 10

More strange places to stay.

Ambleside Opticians: 5 years of eye care in the community A surprise trip by my husband to Ambleside decided the location of Ambleside Opticians.

How does a night under the stars sleeping in a shepherd’s hut sound, or what about a chance to live like a hobbit in an underground hideaway? Cumbria Tourism has analysed the county’s accommodation stock and found that alternative accommodation has grown by almost 1000 bed spaces. The survey showed that the increase is largely due to the rise in sites offering lodgings like yurts, tipis, glamping pods, shepherd huts and wigwams – and even secret underground hideaways. Park Cliffe Campsite in Windermere allows visitors an upgrade from a standard tent pitch to their wool insulated camping pods. Herdy Huts at Rydal offer luxury the shepherds would have died

for. The Quiet Site in Ullswater recently opened their Hobbit Holes, large underground living spaces which blend into the local scenery. Owner Daniel Holder, said: “With changing consumer expectations and more people wanting that ‘back to nature experience’ we have invested a lot into glamping over the last 10 years with the provision of the Hobbit Holes and Camping Pods. This could eventually make up around 40% of what we offer” More traditional serviced accommodation - such as hotels, guest houses and B&Bs – has seen almost 500 new bed spaces since 2012. Self-catering accommodation continues to be the largest growth sector with an extra 3,300 bed spaces becoming available in the same period.

We have loved every minute of this wonderful journey. Some of the many highlights have been the Civic trust award for renovating our premises at The Old Mill beside Rattle Ghyll, and coming second in the national Young Practice of the Year(2014) for quality of eye care and positive impact on eye care. We are proud of the growth of the practice by recommendation, and to have such supportive and appreciative patients, who are a huge part of our success story. These are exciting times for Optometry. We are ready for the next five years with some exciting new services and equipment which offers cutting edge technology, affording all our patients a truly 21st century eye examination. Please look out for upcoming information about our 5th birthday celebrations in October 2016….we’d love to see you all there!

Ambleside’s four-day Festival of the Fells really did have something for everyone. Ambleside Together was formed at the start of the year to promote the town following last December’s floods.

On arrival at Lloyd South Lakes you will find a beautiful new showroom set in stunning countryside with plenty of space making it easy to explore the full range of MINIs which are available including the new Lloyd Exclusive, Black Edition. The local MINI Centre is easy to find, situated in Lindale just 10 minutes from Newby Bridge, making it ideally placed for test drives, with minimal traffic and a variety of driving roads right on the doorstep. The friendly and professional showroom has its own dedicated MINI team who are always on hand to help. Open 7 days a week customers are always welcome to pop in for a coffee, take a test drive and enquire about the latest offers. The new extension also made room for a dedicated indoor hand over bay allowing the team to take all the time needed to explain all the latest technologies and features included with your new MINI, safe in the knowledge that the British weather won’t cut this short. The new showroom hasn’t changed the ethos at the heart of the Lloyd Motor Group. The finest customer service with a local touch is at the heart of the Lloyd philosophy, which is loved by customers old and new alike.

Festival of the Fells was its biggest and most ambitious project, consuming hundreds of hours of the lives of a committee of seven local people who masterminded the event: Wendy Rainer, Robin Brackenbury, Clive Hutchby, Eileen Jones, Paul McDougall, Andew Hewitt and Ross Cunningham. The ‘something for everyone’ theme began on the Thursday morning of the festival when Cookhouse Gallery opened its doors for an exhibition of mountain art and in walked Dilys AdamSmith, from Chichester, West Sussex, the first visitor. Within an hour word was spreading through town: “There are wolves at Cunninghams” – this was soon after the arrival of Maska and Kajika, two 98%wolf hybrids at the outdoor shop on Rydal Road. At Zeffirellis Jazz Bar the festival was officially opened by its patron, mountaineer Alan Hinkes OBE. He is the only Briton to have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks but over the course of four days where he seemed to be everywhere it appeared that he was prouder to be a Yorkshireman. That evening, Wainwright Society founder John Burland performed his acclaimed one-man show An Evening With Alfred Wainwright. Friday was the day a number of stands went up in the Market Cross - Love Ambleside, Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary (selling tickets for Sunday’s charity Duck Race), Friends of the Lake District (whose guided walks were popular as was the ‘know your fells‘

MAIN: Allie Pennington, right, with volunteer helpers RIGHT: Dan and Dee Ashman walk Maska and Kajika through Ambleside. BOTTOM: Alan Hinkes, right, with John Burland

daily quiz), and poet John Phoenix, who composed a festival poem specially for the occasion which he read out on Lakeland Radio. From then on it was a blur of events – walks, talks, swims, mountain movies at Zeffirellis, a ceilidh, a live band in Market Cross on Saturday night (the splendidly named Cumbian blues band Uncle Carbunkle), a trail race to Wansfell and back started by Lakeland fellwalking legend Joss Naylor MBE, nordic walking, a half triathlon, a car pull (see page 6), the duck race, ghyll scrambling and abseiling, plus a night of comedy at The Lily. A special mention to Allie Pennington of the Freedom Wizard charity, whose wheelchair test drives offered wheelchair users the chance to experience the great outdoors. One woman, after a 2-mile excursion in a motorised wheelchair, told Allie, tearfully: “that’s the first walk I’ve had with my husband for 20 years.” Allie said: “I almost burst into tears myself.”

Ambleside pulled out all the stops for the festival, and the organisers say they will soon be actively looking for more sponsors which they will need to do a second festival next year. “It exceeded all our expectations,” said Ambleside Together chairman Andrew Hewitt. “We would like to thank everyone who supported the festival – our sponsor Lakeland Land Rover, South Lakeland District Council and Lakes Parish Council, all the people who held events or offered their venues to do so, our volunteers and, in particular, the enthusiastic support of local people.”

Hrishikesh Desai wins a Michelin Star Gilpin’s Executive Chef, Hrishikesh Desai, has been awarded his first Michelin Star. Winner of Alex Polizzi’s BBC2 Chefs on Trial, his background includes Institute Paul Bocuse, Les Maison de Bricourt (2*), Le Chateau do Bagnol (1*), French Laundry (3*), and Lucknam ‘The Park’ (1*). He is one of the few chefs to have won both the Roux Scholarship (2009) and the Craft Guild of Chef’s National Chef of the Year (2010). Desai says: “There are many dishes which are based on my childhood memories of food… this is how I approach creating new menus at Gilpin, always using the finest local produce, but adding my own twist.” With a fascinating history as a centre of the spice trade, Cumbrian cuisine has a rich heritage, and local specialities have long included exotic spices with favourites such as Cumberland sausage, potted shrimps, Grasmere gingerbread, and of course, sticky toffee pudding. At Gilpin this Autumn there will be two restaurants celebrating this tradition.

From November there will be two restaurants at Gilpin Hotel, - something for every occasion..

“ Hrishi ”

“ Gilpin Spice”

The re-named restaurant where Desai’s imaginative Michelin starred dishes combine great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver modern British dishes with a twist of Asia unbelievable textures and flavours that satisfy traditionalists while giving experimentalists something new.

A new restaurant opening in November, with an open kitchen transcending international boundaries, focusing on a more informal menu with dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China. Individual tables, chef’s counter and a private room - perfect for Christmas parties, special occasions - or for no reason at all!

The spirit of Gilpin is motivated by love and laughter – our guests’, and ours. We hope to welcome you to Gilpin soon. 16

Cumbria tourism in winter

A head start

Cumbria tourism is about to begin a five month campaign to promote the region as a destination during the winter months. The campaign will showcase the activities and attractions that people can enjoy at this time of the year. Part of this will be the new ‘LoveCumbria’ Winter Rewards Card offering special discounts to a string of popular tourist attractions. Among those who have already signed up to offer ‘2 for 1’ rewards as part of the LoveCumbria scheme are The Wordsworth Trust, The Lakes Distillery, Ullswater Steamers, Lakeland Arts, Rheged and Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Ian Stephens, M.D. of Cumbria Tourism, says, “Unlike many other UK destinations, the Lake District Cumbria has a plentiful supply of popular events and places to visit regardless of the changing seasons. There is no doubt last winter was a challenging time for our £2.62 billion tourism sector, but we are finalising this campaign on behalf of our 2,500 tourism members to showcase Cumbria’s destinations on the national stage and help make the most of the current trend for staycations.”

Watching the children in our lives grow up can be a rollercoaster ride. Whether it’s drying their tears, encouraging their studies, or providing financial and emotional support for one or more of life’s key milestones we do what we can to give them the best possible start in life. Of course, money isn’t everything but it can help to give the children in our lives a head start. And the simple fact of the matter is that the financial world our children are growing up in is a very different and difficult one. If saving for our children was once perhaps an aspiration,

it is increasingly becoming a necessity if we want them to have the best possible start to their adult lives. Without a helping hand, your children’s hopes and dreams may remain just that; but with sensible financial planning you can help make them a reality. Whilst a JISA has to be set up by a parent or guardian, the rules allow contributions from any source. It is often grandparents who are in a position to lead the way in saving for children, possibly as part of their own plans to mitigate inheritance tax. And it should also be remembered that other relatives, godparents and family

friends can also make a donation towards this valuable allowance. The maximum annual contribution limit (combined across both cash ISAs and JISA accounts) is £4,080, which will be increased in line with inflation each year. JISAs will benefit from tax-free interest on cash deposits, no further liability to income tax on dividends and no capital gains tax. Significantly, the accounts will be owned by the child but the funds will be locked in until the child turns 18. Rather than pay out at that point, JISAs will roll over into standard ISAs, hopefully encouraging the same saving discipline into the future.

Over the coming months, the team from Windermere Lake Cruises will be setting sail for a series of international trade missions, large-scale travel trade events and highprofile meetings to fly the flag for the Lake District. A trade mission to China and Korea is planned for November, in conjunction with VisitBritain and a group of other local businesses. It follows VisitBritain’s successful ‘Destination China’ event last year, which saw participants meet with more than 60 buyers from some of China’s largest and most influential companies.

SCHOOL REPORT

Coniston Primary turn up the heat Over the holidays Coniston Primary School had a new heating system and boiler installed. This caused some significant disruption but will be well worth it once winter comes! Children in Class 2 recently visited Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s Home. They had a wonderful time and enjoyed finding places in the house that had been illustrated in the books and they even found an egg in Jemima Puddleduck’s garden! The whole school celebrated their Harvest Festival at St Andrew’s Church, Coniston. During the service they had a retiring collection to support Manna House in Kendal who support those who are homeless or in need of help in other ways in

the South Lakes area. The Home School Association (HSA) is a group of parents and school representatives who come together to raise money for the additional costs that the school budget doesn’t account for. A lot of their money each year goes towards paying for the coaches provided for the school trips. They also paid for Kindles, laptops and Ipads for the children to learn on which is a necessity in this technological age. This year the HSA are funding the refreshments for after school clubs. They would like to thank everybody for supporting the school, but they need all the help they can get and would love to see some new faces.

Packing it in at St Cuthbert’s It has been a busy start to the term at St Cuthbert’s Primary School. A big venture for the school has been the introduction of after school activities at the National Trust’s Footprint building and grounds. Pupils have been given the opportunity to work closely with colleagues from a group called Woodmatters on a variety of woodland and bushcraft activities. Yakkers from Lakeland Radio has been ‘on tour’ and he officially opened the school’s outside gym and climbing wall. This new resource is very special and keeps children active and socially interacting without them even realising. St Cuthbert’s continues to extend its range of activities and this term will begin an archery club and table tennis club in the hope that Cumbria’s future Olympians may be nurtured.

Ambleside bike talent

At the end of September the Key Stage 2 children all brought their bikes to school to take part in a ‘Pro Ride’ training session with Phil Bateman. Phil is a former team GB rider and Olympian who competed in the 1988 South Korea games as part of the team time trial squad. The children had a fantastic time learning how to control their bikes in race conditions; mastering cornering and how to ride safely in a peloton.

It was great to see everyone cycle to school, all with helmets of course! Meanwhile year 6 have embarked on their week of Bikability safety training so that they can keep themselves safe whilst cycling on the streets. And just to round things off, they’ve also taken part in bike maintenance workshops to learn how to keep their bikes in tip top condition. It’s all go on the cycling front!

Bicycle thievery

On the 21st of September, the school took part in solemn, respectful activities and reflections linked to the International Day of Peace. We should never underestimate how balanced children are in their judgements about world issues.

Take good care of your offspring’s cycles. Cumbria Police have said that more than a hundred bikes have been reported stolen over the past summer - and more than 700 were taken in the past two years. Crime data which also shows that 597 cases were closed because no suspect could be identified. 39 of the cases end with court action or a police warning Just one resulted in a prison sentence.

Leon is king of the BMX

Leon Parker, a Windermere schoolboy, has become the ‘7 and Under’ British BMX Champion following his victory at the British Championships. Leon, who attends Windermere School, had to fight hard for his victory, particularly in the semifinal, where his track craft paid off in a nail-biting, final charge down the last straight to ensure a narrow victory. In the final Leon lead from start to finish, earning a £20 prize for reaching the first corner first. Leon said, “I’m really happy I won the final and standing on the podium to be presented with the trophy was brilliant. I hope I can carry on winning BMX events and maybe one day I can compete at the Olympics.” This follows a 6th place in the European BMX Championships in Verona. Leon’s mother, Renate Parker said “We’re absolutely thrilled for Leon. All his hard work has paid off, and being crowned British Champion is the icing on the cake. Both championships were tough, but Verona was particularly hard.” Rachael Thomas, Head of the Elleray Campus at Windermere School, added; “Pupils and staff have been keenly following Leon’s success and are thrilled that he has not only retained his National title, but is also the British BMX champion. We are always so proud of our students when they set themselves challenges and success on this kind of level”

Fantastic fans find Fred’s final resting place. “In my opinion we should shout ‘Attock, Attock, Attock’ on the first game of every season in respect and remembrance of what he did.” A group of fanatical fans have uncovered a previously unknown link between South Lakeland and the foundations of one of the world’s biggest football clubs. The Stretford Enders Worldwide, four ardent Manchester United supporters, have researched the very earliest days of the club and have discovered that the man who first formed Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878 – the forerunner of the modern Manchester United - is buried in Windermere. Frederick Attock managed to gather some influential characters together, including James Balfour (who went on to become Prime Minister in 1902), and Charles Prestwich Scott, then editor of the Manchester Guardian, to help his ambition to start a team. In July 1878 he registered the Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Cricket and Football Club as a limited company and football club with 8000 shares priced at £1 each. He subsequently became widely acknowledged as

being the ‘founding father’ of Manchester United. The four fans discovered that Attock had to retire from work due to ill health in 1892 and handed control of the football club to Newton Heath’s first ever full-time manager, Alf Albut. It was after his retirement that Attock moved to Storrs Park in Bowness. He died on 21 May 1902. Helped by South Lakeland District Council’s (SLDC’s) Bereavement Services Officer, who checked documents and records, they found Attock’s grave at plot 142 in the cemetery. SLDC officers were also able to confirm that the grave was purchased by Frederick Attock’s son, George, who then lived at Cunsey, Windermere. In late August the Stretford

Enders Worldwide made a pilgrimage to visit the grave of their club’s founding father and to lay flowers and scarves in the colours of Manchester United and Newton Heath. Steve Donoghue continued: “It is important that every Manchester United fan on this planet should know about this man. He is someone I think we should revere. In my opinion we should shout ‘Attock, Attock, Attock’ on the first game of every season in respect and remembrance of what he did”. Mark Wylie, Curator of the Manchester United Museum at Old Trafford, confirmed that the details about where Frederick Attock is buried was new information and would be added to the official archives.

Coniston’s Joe is a star in the making! There was a very excited young man and very proud parents and siblings when Coniston resident, Joe Edmondson (aged 16) was recently chosen to represent England in September’s U17’s Junior International Uphill Event on Skiddaw Little Man up above Keswick. This was a culmination of a lot of hard work and a great deal of determination to succeed and Coniston is very proud of his achievement. Joe managed

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST NOVEMBER

to get 5th overall on the day which resulted in four England runners finishing in the top 5. This meant that team England also achieved team Gold. Joe was very keen to thank everyone who has supported him over the years, especially his family, and all those who went to cheer him on at the race. It was very much appreciated by him. Well done and we are sure that he has a fantastic running future ahead of him!

There’s no place like home for Rosemere A charity scheme launched to honour the memory of popular Ambleside estate agent David Benjamin has raised £6,000 in its first six months. ‘Charity begins at Home’ was adopted by local

estate agency Matthews Benjamin and Fine & Country Lakes and North Lancashire to raise money for Rosemere Cancer Foundation by donating £100 from the sale of every property. Company director Andrew Kneale said: “We are delighted to donate £6,000 to the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, which is such a worthwhile local charity.” The pledge was made to following the death of former managing director David, who lost a

courageous battle against skin cancer last year aged just 53. Rosemere’s corporate fundraiser Cathy Skidmore said of the company: “Its directors and staff are leading the way in showing other local companies how business and charities can work together to help serve the communities on whose custom they depend.” The money raised will be spent on vital equipment, research and training to help ensure cancer patients in Lancashire

and South Cumbria have access to world class treatments and services via their local hospitals and the Rosemere Cancer Centre at Royal Preston Hospital. The donation comes on top of the company’s sponsorship of 71 places in the Great North Swim on Windermere in June, in which director Deborah Benjamin, David’s widow, his three sons James, Alex and Oliver, Andrew Kneale and other staff, family and friends took part.

More than 120 players took to the course at Windermere in fine conditions, in support of the charity, which serves patients across North Lancashire and the South Lakes. The event has become renowned for its ‘quirky style’, with an ice cream van in situ on the fairways (courtesy of ‘Josephs’) and afternoon tea and cocktails served at the halfway house by St Johns’ volunteers, and mixed by Simon Thomas & Adam Thorpe of Slate Bar. The combined efforts of the raffle and auction contributed towards the tremendous sum raised, with prizes donated by Emirates, who gave two airline tickets to Dubai. Other prizes up for grabs were special golf experiences at Loch Lomond and Archerfield and lunch for two at Simon Rogan’s Cartmel restaurant, L’Enclume with accompanying chauffeur, donated by Lakeland Chauffeurs, with match funding provided by Barclays and Yorkshire Bank. Following a sumptuous three course dinner, a video production of the day was played by ‘Tee Video’.

A one-night Lake District art exhibition helped a Japanese artist, living in Grange over Sands, to accompany his painting to a Japanese art exhibition. Before it was shipped to Japan, Hideyuki Sobue’s painting was shown in England for one night only at Wordsworth’s former home at Rydal Mount near Ambleside. Curators, Peter and Marian Elkington, held a reception and poetry recital by Andrew Christopher Wordsworth, the poet’s great great great great grandson. The painting brings together two World-class poets on one canvas. William Wordsworth and the Japanese poet Basho. The exhibition, at the Kakimori Bunko Museum, has assembled some of

the original manuscripts of both of the poets alongside artworks created by over 20 other contemporary artists from the UK and Japan. Hideyuki Sobue, (who now lives in Grange over Sands), was commissioned by the museum to create the artwork. At an opening ceremony, a huge poster showing the hills of the Lake District can be seen behind

the museum officials. Christopher Wordsworth said: “It has been a privilege to learn about the poet Basho’s work through the art of our friend Hideyuki. Basho stands as Wordsworth’s equal, or even greater, in global literature. We are very pleased that we were able to help Hideyuki attend the opening.”

Hard hat tours of Wray Castle If you’ve always fancied a poke around in the depths - and the heights- of the Lake District’s premier gothic pile, Wray Castle, then you’re in luck. Every Saturday and Sunday in November at 1pm the National Trust are hosting ‘Hard Hat Tours’. They will take you beyond the usual visitor access into some of the unseen parts of Wray Castle.

Find out more about the work carried out to repair the complex roof and some of the lessons learned along the way. There are spiral staircases to negotiate, small spaces to get through (hence the hard hats) and a few cobwebs to avoid. The intrepid guides will also show you some of the darkest corridors and turrets so torches will be at the ready!

Places are limited so the National Trust are advising people to book early to avoid disappointment. Telephone 015394 33250.

Faintly Falling Upon All the Living and the Dead Faintly Falling Upon All the Living and the Dead is a new indoor sculpture exhibited at the visitor centre, Grizedale Forest. Artist Mariele Neudecker has transplanted three life sized trees into the gallery space. Their presence speaks of the stillness of a forest clearing, without the possible howling of wind, patter of rain or creaking of branches. Neudecker’s work is an evolving exploration of the landscape tradition in art, and

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 1ST NOVEMBER

furthermore the changing representation and reception of nature and landscape. As in internationally acclaimed artist, Neudecker has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the IKON Gallery, Birmingham, Tate St Ives, Tate Britain, London, the Zeppelin Museum, Friedrichshafen, as well as in Biennales in Japan, Australia and Singapore. The installation is in situ at Grizedale from 1st October to 1st January 2017.

Lakeland memory jerkers

Joseph Hardman’s photographs of the Lake District have long been held in high regard with his black and white pictures, taken using Victorian glass-plate cameras appearing in both national and local press. Well known for iconic images of Cumbria’s beauty spots and tourist havens, Hardman’s portrayal of people at work is often passed over. However an exhibition of Hardman’s work may now be seen at the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry, Kendal, until 17th December. Hardman died in 1972 and never learned to drive so he covered about 200 miles a week by taxi, across the Lake District. He took thousands of images and assiduously

recorded shows, shepherds’ fairs and traditions such as the Lyth Valley damson harvest. In 2014, Hardman’s photographs were given to local people with dementia in an attempt to trigger their memories of the area between 1930 and 1960. Rachel Roberts of the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry: “I think Hardman had a very positive message. It was a message of great personal love for the Lake District and for the people who lived and worked here.”

Kay at the Rosewood Cafe A new book has been published by Lakes poet, Kerry Darbishire. Kay’s Ark is the charming story of Kay Callaghan, Kerry’s mother and the owner of ‘Rosewood’, the former café and tea garden at Skelwith Bridge, near Ambleside. Kay became a much loved local character after moving up to the Lake District with her three children in 1950. With her marriage on the rocks and little money to support her young family, she decided to open her home to the public by turning it into a cafe and tea garden. Rosewood soon became a popular haven for artists, musicians, writers, animal lovers and animals during the 1950’s and 60’s. Kerry writes about the daily goings on at Rosewood, recollecting her mother’s vibrant personality whilst poignantly revealing her insecurities. Kay Callaghan had been born into privilege, the daughter of a wealthy midlands Industrialist and a close descendant of the composer Frederick Delius. After spending her formative

Kay’s life in the Lake District was to become very different to the affluent lifestyle she had been used to. In later years, she founded two animal charities in the Lake District, Animal Concern and Animal Rescue (with Alfred Wainwright) helping to save hundreds of animals from a desperate fate. The author and prize winning poet Kerry Darbishire won a Cumbria Writers Bursary to pen the book from the writer Hunter Davies. She lives near Staveley with her artist husband Stephen Darbishire.

At the cutting edge Rusland Horizons Scheme which sees six new apprentices on a 3 year programme is dedicated to restoring and protecting the important landscape of the Rusland Valley. They were delighted to accept the involvement of Makita, Electricity North West and Thomas Graham, a local Cumbrian family business.

All of its power tools have been generously donated by Makita. Thomas Graham has provided the team with a comprehensive store of tools. This leaves them fully equipped and ready to really make a difference, as a team “This is an important scheme and one Makita is proud to be involved with,” says Mark Earles, national sales manager, Makita OPE..” Two of the new apprentices, Leia Hoggarth from Barrow and Aiden Dineen from Dalton are also being sponsored by Electricity North West. Sally McGuire of Electricity North West, said: “We are committed to providing opportunities for young people throughout the region through our own apprenticeship scheme and also by supporting other fantastic schemes like the new apprentice programme by Rusland Horizons”. Claire Green, Rusland Horizon’s Skills and Training Coordinator says: “It is fabulous to have this opportunity to provide skills and training to local young people who are so enthusiastic and passionate about protecting this local landscape.”

Remember, remember… the environment Winter is almost here, bonfires and firework displays will soon be upon us. Although this can be a magical time, consider a few things before throwing yourselves into the celebrations. We are aware of the common sense rules in the Firework Code. We know to light the touchpaper at arm’s length and stand well back. We tell our children to never throw them and we know to keep livestock safe and our pets indoors. However, in recent years sky lanterns (commonly known as Chinese lanterns) have become increasingly popular for all kinds of celebration. Unfortunately the hazards posed by them are much less obvious than their explosive cousins. Sky lanterns are made from paper and wire (sometimes bamboo) and contain an open flame heat source which lifts the lantern into the air where it can float for miles from the point of release. Once the flame extinguishes, the lanterns falls back to earth. There have been several reports of animals dying because they have eaten the wire frames when they have landed causing rupture to

the stomach. Small animals and birds have become entangled in the frames and died from injury, starvation or simply stress. According to the RSPCA the bamboo framed lanterns are just as dangerous. There are many cases of cattle suffering burns as the lanterns have fallen into fields, but even more damage can occur if they land in gardens, parks, haystacks, fuel tanks and barns causing injury and catastrophic damage to the environment. They can cause damage to aircrafts. Aviation authorities have highlighted the risks of damaging engines, tyres and fuselages. This could pose a particular problem in

our area given the amount of MOD military aircraft low flying activity at night. Fireworks are loud and powerful, but the dangers are obvious. Sky lanterns can float around for a substantial period of time and we have no control over where they will land. The RSPCA, NFU and many other organisations have been calling for a ban (they are already banned in several countries). Please ask yourself... are the few minutes of pleasure gained from watching a lantern majestically float into the night sky really worth the havoc they can cause to livestock, wildlife and the environment?

Autumn at Holehird Gardens Holehird gardens remain open throughout the year. As the temperature becomes cooler the colours of the leaves become more intense before they finally drop off. The views of the Langdales are spectacular on dry days and of course there is still a lot of colour produced by late flowering plants such as sedums and Michaelmas daisies. Dahlias will still be flowering until the first frosts turn their leaves brown. The gardens are generally quieter in the autumn, but worth visiting for their peace and tranquillity. As the month wears on, the volunteer gardeners will be busy cutting back

the herbaceous borders, removing any weeds which spring up and mulching the ground ready for the next growing season. The fallen leaves will be collected to make leaf mould. Two to three year old leaf mould, coupled with Holehird’s own compost, helps the plants grow so well each year. There will be a gap in the walled garden where the greenhouse once stood. It will be replaced by a new structure early in 2017. There will be no volunteers in Reception until spring 2017, but there may still be plants for sale. Visitors are asked to put plant money into the box next to the main

building. If the gates to the walled garden are closed, visitors are asked to enter and then shut them so that rabbits are prevented from coming in as well. On most days there will be a few gardeners around, with most coming on a Wednesday.

On the fells

CLIVE HUTCHBY

Suddenly, in less time than it takes for a rain-storm to whip up over Great Langdale, the summer was gone. It wasn’t exactly an ‘Indian Summer’ September but it had its moments, with enough sunshine and balmy temperatures to keep tourists and fellwalkers flocking to the Lakes and events such as the Tour of Britain and Ambleside’s Festival of the Fells to further boost the local economy. But now it’s October, the leaves have turned, and walking the fells takes on a whole new level of seriousness. At this time of year the weather can change at a blink of an eye, which is why I’ve spent many hours lately sorting through the autumn/winter gear I need to take with me onto the mountains. I’ve got one of those expandable rucksacks and for the next few months it will be bulging with crampons, snow goggles, winter fleeces, extra mittens, hats, gloves... nand not forgetting the JetBoil of course. There’s one thing I will be doing, however, before setting off to walk the next set of Wainwright fells (the Northerns), and that’s return to Tilberthwaite. Last year I spent three days walking on and around Holme Fell (that’s the delightful fell that provides a backdrop for Yew Tree Farm on the A593 between Skelwith Bridge and Coniston), and what a joy that was. I particularly want to go back to the narrow lane between the main road and Hodge Close, where, if the autumn leaves haven’t been blown away by October gales, the colours are as vivid as an explosion in a Dulux factory. For photographers seeking some golden moments, this is a location I would highly recommended. You might well see me there!

Looking down on Holme Ground farm, Tilberthwaite Clive Hutchby, who contributes to Windermere Now, is revising Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. Books One, Two and Three (the Eastern, Far Eastern and Central fells) have already been published. He has completed work on Book Four: The Southern Fells which will be published next spring.

Tufty back at Brockhole

There was great excitement recently when one of the National Park’s volunteers spotted a red squirrel from the bird hide at the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole on Windermere. Bob Cartwright, Secretary of Westmorland Red Squirrels, explained, “Greys out-compete the reds for territory and food and risk spreading squirrel pox virus, which is lethal to red squirrels. We know that by managing grey numbers through humane control we have seen

We’ve heard that the frightening Asian Hornet has now been found in the UK. What does this mean for us and our indigenous stripey friends? Now we are into winter does it have any relevance? Not a lot for us humans, and perhaps not a total disaster for the wasps and bees that live here already. Yes, the Asian Hornet (Vespa Veluntia) is very aggressive to bees and may wipe out colonies. But according to Nicola Spence, Defra Deputy Director for Plant and Bee Health, “It is important to remember they pose no greater risk to human health than a bee, though we recognise the damage they can cause to honey bee colonies. That’s why we are taking swift and robust action to identify

red squirrels maintain and extend their range across south Cumbria.”

Kat Parker, Brockhole Commercial Manager, added, “Brockhole should be ideal for seeing red squirrels in their natural habitat and now we know they’re back, it’s a great place for the public to view these Lake District

icons.” Mike Turner, of Treetop Treks, which is based at Brockhole, agrees. “The visitors to our experience get as close to red squirrel habitat as it’s possible to do without being a squirrel. We’d love it if our customers spot a red as part of their exciting day here in the heart of the Lake District.”

Stirring up a Hornet’s nest. and destroy any nests.” The distinctive Asian Hornet, smaller than our native species, is most likely to be found in southern parts of England. It has been spotted in Tetbury, Gloucestershire earlier year – the first time the hornet has been discovered in the UK. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has set up a three-mile surveillance zone and a ‘species alert’ has been issued. It’s active months are between April and November and whilst it is inactive over the winter the Queens will be preparing to form new colonies in the spring. The good news is that it is believed the species will not be able survive

in the north of the UK due to colder winters. How do you recognise it? Unlike many of the garish pictures that have appeared in the press it is a dowdy little thing. If you do spot one early next year you should report it at once before the colony can develop. Sightings should be sent with a photograph and local details to alertnonnative@ceh. ac.uk

There are around 5,500 church towers with ringable bells in England but the numbers of bellringers are falling and an ancient tradition is in danger of fading into silence. That’s the message from Clive Sutton, writing in the Ambleside and Brathay Parish Magazine, who warned that unless new bellringers come forward “the sound of church bells will cease to be part of our cultural heritage”. The bells at St Mary’s Ambleside, Holy Trinity Brathay and Holy Trinity Chapel Stile are still rung weekly but more ringers are needed if this is to continue.
