Letter from the Editor

Food Banks, Dispelling the Myths

Paul Milling was at Hawkshead Show last month hoping to dispel some myths about the amount of money claimed by people on benefits, and he discovered that most people hadn’t got a clue.

Well I think Grasmere Sports and Show just about hit the jackpot as it took place on one of the best days of the summer. With the brass band playing as the runners came in, tug o’war in full flow in one corner and fabulous Cumberland wrestling taking place in another, the day could not have gone better. Hawkshead Show also enjoyed a good attendance and a splendid day was had by all. Summer at these moments in the Lake District are perfect.

Paul Milling asks the question: Out of each £100 paid out in benefits, how much is fiddled? The answers: People think £24; the actual figure: 70p.

“It’s amazing the perception people have about benefits scrounging,” he said.

Boxes of Hope leaflets and labels are ready to collect - full details on page 4. Boxes need to be returned by November 12th. Am I really talking about bras in the Editor’s letter? Well yes as ‘The Big Pink’ are collecting - find out more on page 3.

Paul, one of the trustees of the Windermere & District Food Bank, a registered charity, also used the stand to recruit more volunteers.

Over 450 people attended the Premier Inn presentation at the Kelsick Centre. The proposals for the Borrans Road site to build an 88-bedroom hotel and 40 new homes are developing amid concerns about traffic, access, flooding and the effect on local business. A planning application is expected to be submitted later in the year.

“People find it hard to imagine there’s a need for a food bank in seemingly affluent South Lakeland, but there is.”

And he had a message to anyone who was too proud to ask for help, whether they be temporarily short of money while switching jobs, or recently widowed and finding it hard to make ends meet on one source of income when previously there was two: “Don’t be proud,” he said. “If you need food and can’t get to us we’ll get it to you.”

If you would like to donate food or money, to volunteer, or to hold a fundraising event, OR ARE IN NEED, call Paul on 015394 22569, or email info@windermeredistrict.foodbank.org.uk

The site, on the eastern side of Borrans Road opposite the Rothay Manor Hotel ‘island’, is registered under the title number CU258766 with the Land Registry, and in a copy of the title deed released in February 2013 the owners were named as David Holt, of Witherwell Barn, Grove Lane, Ashow, Warwickshire; and Brian and Peter Holt, both of Tower House, Hill Wooton, Warwickshire. It is believed they are the sons of Herbert Holt, who purchased the land from Silverdale Building Company in 1973.

That was 13 months before the Lake District National Park Authority, in June 2013, made a successful application to the Planning Inspectorate for part of the site to be re-classified as available for housing. A figure of £6 million is widely quoted regarding the value of the site. Applethwaite, based in Bamber Bridge, Preston, states on its website (www.applethwaitehomes.co.uk): “We have our roots in the Lake District where for many years we have operated as a niche residential developer creating high quality homes in premium locations.”

So long and thanks for all the cake. Troutbeck Village Shop and tea room closed it’s doors at the end of August, marking the end of 2 years of amazing cakes, good coffee and even the occasional yoga session by the fire! Carly and Gareth Harding took over the old post office and village shop in 2013, and having overcome many obstacles, offered Troutbeck a welcoming bustling focal point for those in the community that chose to enjoy it. Conveniently situated for visitors on the popular walking route through Skelghyll Woods between Ambleside and Troutbeck, many a bedraggled walker could be found gratefully eating hot soup in the tearoom before the climb back over Wansfell. The decor had a distinctly local theme, featuring the work of Cumbrian artists on the walls and using the original bookcase as food shelves.

Boxes of Hope, Cumbria

Malcolm's memories of wartime Windermere

What do you do when you are 98 and have time on your hands? Muriel Dent knits wonderfully colourful and warm children's hats for the local Cumbrian charity Boxes of Hope and to date she has made over 500.

Boxes of Hope is a small but very effective charity, raising funds for a school which educates Roma children in rural Romania and each December it distributes decorated shoe boxes, filled with essential basic items and small gifts, to children living in abject poverty. Muriel was keen to do her bit to help. Local Cumbrians donate wool and Muriel fills her days creating stylish, vibrant woolly hats.

Money raised for Boxes of Hope goes directly to the school, so this year, Muriel decided that she would like to see if the hats could raise cash to buy some equipment for the schoolchildren. This means that local Cumbrians have the opportunity to buy the hats and support the charity at the same time. The hats were very popular at some of the local shows during the summer, and if you would like to buy one, please contact Boxes of Hope on 01539436346, or info@boxesofhopecumbria.co.uk

Now is the time to fill a shoebox - a simple, inexpensive and fun thing to do for people of all ages. A shoebox gift really does make a difference to a child who has none of the basics we take for granted.

So..... pick up a leaflet from Windermere Now (next to Barclays Bank), Mountain Goat in Windermere, Hubble Bubble in Bowness, Hayes in Ambleside or the Wordsworth Hotel in Grasmere, for further information about the children we help, and how to go about filling a shoebox. It includes a boy/girl label for you to stick on

your box. Take your filled shoebox – with £2 towards the costs of the campaign – and secured by an elastic band - to one of the above drop off points by Tuesday November 12th at the latest. The checked shoeboxes leave Ambleside on November 17th, for our team going out in early December to distribute. If you would like to help check and pack the shoeboxes, or visit the “warehouse”, you will find us at Arcadia, Rothay Industrial Estate, Ambleside, LA22 0SW on Wednesday, November 11th. For further details, ring Keith Webster, 015395 68013. More information is available at: www.boxesofhopecumbria.co.uk.

Our issue 10 (July/August) story about bren gun carriers stationed in Windermere during World War Two has jogged more memories . . . including how the military vehicles “destroyed” two iconic Lake District roads. Malcolm Tyson, from F.W. Tyson Mountain Footwear Specialists in Ambleside, was a boy living in Bowness at the time, and he recalls that after the soldiers completed their daily training children would congregate at their Birthwaite Road HQ. “They would show us how to get in and out of the carriers, and even give a few of us rides,” said Malcolm. “Little Peter Walker, who still lives in Windermere, was their favourite. He was almost like a mascot, and he got more rides than anyone else!” The troops did a lot of their military exercises on the Blea Tarn and Wrynose Pass roads, and Malcolm said they almost destroyed them. “They made a right mess of them,” he said. “They had to be practically rebuilt after the war.” èAny more memories about wartime Windermere? THERE'S BIN CHANGES Bins collections for many of the residents in the South Lakeland District Council area have changed – you should have received details in a letter in a green envelope – and the benefits are set to kick in early next year with the council due to begin collecting plastics and cardboard from your home.

• GLASS: this remains in a separate box;

• PLASTICS: a bag will be supplied; include CANS in this; • CARDBOARD: small pieces

should be placed in the PAPER box; large pieces should be stood up next to other bins ready for collection. “All cardboard boxes will need to be flattened before collection,” said Councillor Sanderson. The council will advise householders when this new system is due to come into force.

'It wont happen again!' Rushbearing tea shortage confession Organisers of this year’s Ambleside Rushbearing have apologised for running out of tea and pledged: it will not happen again. In the latest issue of the Ambleside and Brathay parish

newsletter they wrote: “We thought we had provided plenty (of tea) so in a way we were victims of our own success. Next year we will be getting more wristbands and lots more teas so please come and join us!”

Chris Rushton Lakes Architect Here in the Lakes we are privileged to live in an amazing landscape.

Now is the time to plan for your new house, or extend or alter your existing home. I am Chris Rushton a local Chartered Architect in Windermere, Lakes Architect, who is passionate about the design of buildings especially the homes we live in.

Homes are places where we relax and recharge batteries. Over years of experience in designing spaces for homes, I am continuing to alter and change spaces to adapt today’s lifestyle. Where we live and how we live is influenced by the spaces we use and the environment that surrounds us. Both are closely linked together.

I am aware that the traditional cellular room layout has changed. We now have more open spaces where kitchens and dining areas allow sharing whilst cooking takes place and friends and family talk. Living areas have become multi functional spaces for TV watching, quiet reading areas or simply being around the relaxing wood burning stove. Leading to conservatories and more glazed areas bringing the natural light, patios and gardens into the home. I can help you enhance the quality of your home by meeting with you to hear your dreams and aspirations . I can offer all levels of service to meet your requirements, with my first consultation free of charge and obligation. From initial discussions through to a completed scheme.

So if you are thinking of a new house, extending or altering your home next year, then now is the time to have those discussions to plan for the building work to commence in early spring of next year. I look forward to hearing from you.

“All building challenges suggest a variety of solutions, depending upon the needs and pocket of the Client. For me, the thread is traced in the building traditions of a given area. I am particularly interested in the Arts and Crafts type of designs and features which have evolved to meet people’s needs in the most effective and appealing way. This architecture, growing from the environment and deep human needs, has the ability to lift the spirit using traditional materials and design in a functional and sustainable way, whilst being completely compatible with the demands of the 21st century.”

CUMBRIA POLICE MESSAGE

“Not all that glitters is gold” Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) involves offenders grooming boys and girls (aged 11-16) and using their power to abuse them. CSE can take many forms, whether it occurs through a seemingly ‘consensual’ relationship with an older friend or a young person engaging in sexual conduct in exchange for attention, affection, gifts, alcohol or cigarettes.

Cumbria Constabulary is committed to preventing CSE, helping victims and bringing offenders to justice. It is a crime that can affect any child, anytime, anywhere regardless of their social or ethnic background. I am proud to say that I am the CSE Champion for the Lakes, which means that it is my role to ensure awareness of this crime is raised. “The More You Know, The More You See”

History of Garlic

Happy Trained Dogs

It is thought that Garlic originated in the Kirgiz Desert in Siberia around 7000 years ago. It was imported into ancient Egypt to feed the slaves who built the pyramids and to keep them fit, healthy and free from infections. Since that time garlic has played an important part in almost every civilisation. In the last 50 years an enormous amount of research has been published to confirm the many beneficial properties of Garlic. Allicin Max from Manuka is made in the same way that allicin from fresh garlic is made and delivers garlic’s active components to exactly where the body needs it.

Birthwaite Flats celebrate 50 years! On the 8th of September 1965 Birthwaite flats on Old College Lane in Windermere was opened by Mr. R.S. Crossfield, Chairman of Westmorland County Council. Offering independence and comradeship, the flats were built to ‘help with the very real problem (as Mr. Crossfield described it) presented in housing old people, particularly those who, though capable of looking after themselves independently, could not cope with the work of looking after a council house.’

As the first sheltered housing in Westmorland, the block of luxury flatlets offered self contained housing for 30 people with a house for the

Tributes pour in for former Parish Councillor Tributes have been made to former Lakes Parish councillor George Middleton, who was born and bred in Ambleside and has died aged 84. Mr Middleton, who was born on Christmas Eve in 1930, died on August 8 and his funeral was held at St Mary’s Church, Ambleside. As a councillor he was tenacious in supporting local traditions such as

Ambleside Rushbearing, and was well-known around town wearing his distinctive deerstalker hat.

Lakes Parish Council vicechairman Fiona Sparrow, at a meeting of the council, led the tributes to her former colleague.

The first warden, Daphne Tetley stayed for 25 years, and now years later she is a resident. She has seen many changes and improvements over the years. For example the original bed sits are gone

The roll-out of superfast fibre broadband across Cumbria has arrived in Ambleside. The county council-led Connecting Cumbria project to build a fibre network around the county is ahead of schedule, and by the end of the year 93 per cent of homes and businesses are expected to have access. However, having superfast broadband in your area doesn’t mean you are automatically connected, and many are missing out

comprising the various councillors who have specific responsibilities, was on the road with an open meeting held on the afternoon of Wednesday the 16th at Langdale Village Hall in Chapel Stile. It was preceded by a 30-minute session at which local people could have their say about the issues affecting Great Langdale.

New Councillor

The Windermere Town Council considered an application from a local resident, Mrs Christine Hallatsch, to be Co-Opted on to the Town Council. At present there are vacancies in all four wards.

Christine is a local resident, who has lived in Windermere for many years and has served on the Town Council previously, so has lots of good experience to bring to the role Bill Smith did warn that, in general, and as there were more vacancies to fill, it was not always appropriate to accept applications without a sound knowledge of the applicant as in normal circumstances of an election the electors would be making the decision. In the case of Co-Option the councillors need to act on the electors’ behalf. The council approved the Co-Option of Mrs Halatsch to the Bowness South Ward.

Thirty-four Wainwrights in three days is the type of challenge that is thirsty work, especially when battered by galeforce winds that almost scuppered the whole venture.

But Richard Jennings didn’t MIND – it was all part of a marathon reconnaissance he and a few friends undertook ahead of a planned charity event next year to raise money for the mental health charity.

One of Richard’s best friends, Dave Clapham, died earlier this year in Leeds after suffering from depression for most of his life, and the charity fell walk is a way of marking his passing. “I’ve suffered from depression myself so I know that Mind is a very worthwhile charity,” said Richard, 43, who lives near Cockermouth. “I love fell walking, so I thought this was the best way of raising money. But it’s such a big undertaking I had to walk the route to make sure it

will work. I didn’t expect to get literally blown off me feet on Helvellyn in August!”

He chose Ambleside as his main base because it lies at the southern end of the three main spines of fells through the Lake District, comprising the backbones of the areas Alfred Wainwright classified as the Eastern Fells (highest point, Helvellyn 3118ft), the Far Eastern Fells (highest point High Street, 2718ft) and the Central Fells (highest point, High Raise 2500ft).

At the end of two days of the three-day walk, he sipped a beer in The Lily in Ambleside, just down from the Backpackers Hostel where they were staying, and discussed whether day three should include Loughrigg as its first fell or Silver How, first having driven to Grasmere for the start. “Loughrigg,” said his 67 year-old friend Kev, “no doubt about it.”

Tim’s column

Swings and Roundabouts at the Council

Thanks everyone who came along to see me as our Summer Tour wound through the Central Lakes the other Tuesday. This tour really is one of the highlights of my year, which is why we have made a point of running it every year since I was elected.

Langrigge Playground came under discussion at the Windermere Town Council meeting when the Town Clerk brought up the issue of the cost of repair to the swings.

As I hope you agree I try to get out and meet with as many people as possible during the normal course of things but the Summer Tour is special as it gives me a chance to get out to the more remote villages and talk to people to find out what is bothering them. With the added benefit of allowing me to drive through what we all know to be the most beautiful part of this country. I don’t really expect people to come along with problems they want help with, the aim is to have more of a chat with people and listen to what they have to say about issues that matter to them. In fact whatever it is that they think is worth chatting about. So the more people who come along the better.

The seats of the two normal swings are damaged and need replacing and the frame of the cradle-swing has been repaired to within an inch of it’s life. So it now needs replacing entirely. A quotation of around £2300 had been obtained for the whole repair/replacement.

Discussion revolved around the possible upgrading of the style of the play area to a more “adventure-based” one than the traditional type which it is at present. Opinion was that if money is going to be spent it, may be an opportunity to alter the style of the play area. Eventually it was decided that swings would still be more relevant to the younger children with parents using Langrigge playground, so the proposal to have the swings replaced was accepted by the council.

Pine Rigg

A lot of people, particularly farmers, came along to express their concerns over the low price of milk. As many of you know this is an issue that I have been working on for many years and believe passionately that we need to sort out. We cannot afford to see farmers going out of dairy at the current rate let alone put up with the fact that nowhere near enough young people are attracted into farming because they feel that the money they can earn does not justify the hard work they have to put in. I have been pressuring ministers on this for some time and will continue with this. Thanks also to everyone who cheered me on in the Guides Race at Grasmere Sports, another bit of a tradition but one that really doesn’t encourage people to come up to me for a chat afterwards. I really wouldn’t wish meeting a sweaty MP after he has run up and down a fell on anyone! As ever if you have anything you want to discuss with me and you have not seen me out and about you can always reach me by emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk or calling 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

A-Boards

A link with guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright is about to be severed.

Of course during these chats familiar themes emerge, investment in the hospital, affordable housing, bringing new well paid jobs to the area but this is good as it reassures me that we are working on the right issues. Local transport is always a concern and this was particularly so in the Central Lakes. I am keeping a close eye on the progress of the electrification of the Lakes line which is important for a whole raft of reasons. Given the amount of effort that went into getting this off the ground I am going to work equally hard to ensure that it remains on track to happen.

MAIN: Plastic swing seats are beyond repair INSET: The wooden swing frame is too far gone to repair

The author of the Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells, in a chapter about Loughrigg Fell in the third book of the series, identified the dwelling known as Pine Rigg as the former clubhouse of a golf club on the

fellside that closed in 1956. The distinctive wooden structure is the last house on the public bridleway linking Ambleside and Skelwith Bridge via Rothay Park and Miller Bridge before open fellside is reached. Now a planning application has been submitted to demolish the existing structure, which is believed to have been built in 1904, and replace it with a new dwelling. Lakes Parish Council at its last meeting recommended that the plan be approved. “The current building is very flimsy,” said Councillor Leslie Johnson (Ambleside). “It’s not fit for purpose.”

Looking Fine and Dandy The Windermere Town Council discussed a proposal to extend the service it provides by enhancing litter collection and, for the first time, street sweeping. There will also be planting and care of neglected flower beds, which the District Council no longer maintain, to keep Windermere & Bowness looking clean and tidy. The Town Steward will continue to do lots of work in Elleray Woods and to clean the road signs every 6 months. To fund this, the Town Council has reduced its administration expenditure, using it instead to get things done on the streets, which is where it matters and where a difference can be made.

This will be done by either extending the hours of the Town Steward or by employing an additional person for one day per week. It was suggested the that initially the extra hours would be offered to the existing Town Steward. The branding on the steward’s working clothes was also discussed. Council members thought it important that people would know that he was working on behalf of the Town Council. The proposal was agreed.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 - NEXT DEADLINE 1 OCTOBER st

Too much advertising on the footways of Ambleside town centre, in the form of shop ‘A’ boards, is concerning Lakes Parish Council, which is drafting a letter to send to retailers in the town reminding them that they must not block the path of pedestrians.

The Bridge House

Ambleside’s iconic landmark on Rydal Road – is to get a new flue and a stove refurbishment, Lakes Parish Council heard at its August meeting. Councillors had no objection to the planning application.

CLLAP

A partnership involving Cumbria County Council, South Lakes District Council and three local parish councils has been given a thumbs down from one of its members – Lakes Parish Council – which has voted to give up membership. The Central Lakes Local Area Partnership (CLLAP) was, according to Councillor Leslie Johnson, little more than a talking shop, with poor attendance and no budget for projects.

Councillor Vivienne Rees, however, said there were positive benefits to Lakes Parish Council being a member, but she was unable to persuade enough of her colleagues to agree with her. This leaves just Windermere Town Council and Skelwith Parish Council as the remaining parish council members.

Low wood

Major plans to redevelop the Low Wood Hotel on the shore of Windermere have been given a cautious approval by Lakes Parish Council, but with strong reservations about a proposed new access point on a bend in the busy A591 road north of the current way in and out. They are worried that a combination of traffic resulting from a planned new conference centre at the site, allied to a possible new access from The Samling Hotel sharing the entrance, could cause serious problems at peak times. Councillor Anne Sowerbutts said: “I am very concerned about the road. Unless they widen the road – which they can’t – I fear this development will seriously hold up people using the main arterial road into the Lake District.”

READY, STEADY...

GRASMERE SHOW As the Adamson Military Brass Band played by the finishing line, almost five thousand visitors watched the women’s guide race record fall to Victoria Wilkinson on a beautiful day at Grasmere Sports and Show. The men’s record of 12 minutes 21 seconds remained unbeaten despite the offer of a £500 prize for anyone who took it. Well done to Simon Bailey who took first place in 13 minutes, and to his son who also won (pictured below). The large crowd who attended enjoyed a fabulous day as competitors came from far and wide to entertain and try their hand at Cumberland wrestling, tug o’ war, or the sprint races for the youngsters. Four legged visitors were in abundance from the Ferret World Roadshow, to Herdwicks and the local competitors in the hound trails. Among the winners in the pens were Robby & Peter Bland from Knott Houses Farm, Grasmere, who took the trophy for the best tup. Alison Langhorn from Lindale who took first place with ‘Tinkerbelle’ in the open restricted hound trail (pictured below). Well done to everyone who took part and made it a great Lakeland day out.

HAWKSHEAD SHOW It takes months to plan, four days to set up, but only one day to take down. That’s Hawkshead Agricultural Show in a nutshell. “The most important thing of all is that it doesn’t pour with rain just before it starts,” said show secretary Sue Todd. And as if to emphasise the point, while she was posing for a photograph outside the tented nerve-centre of the show she looked nervously as the dark clouds passing overhead. Fortunately, the rain held off, meaning the grassy acres of Hawkshead Hall Farm remained grassy and didn’t become the sea of mud the organisers feared. The show, which has been running since 1875, drew its usual bumper entry (as shown by the bulging 52-page annual show catalogue).

AMBLESIDE FLOWER SHOW Back in 1942, in the third year of World War Two, every available bit of land which could grow food was being used to feed a nation fighting Hitler’s murderous regime. But there was still time for some of the niceties of life, which in Ambleside manifested itself that summer with the town’s first flower show. Now, 73 years later, the show is still going strong, as evidenced by the colourful displays of flowers and edible displays of vegetables that filled the trestle tables of the town’s Kelsick Centre last month on the 8th and 9th August. Towards the end of a cold, cloudy and dismally wet summer, the obvious question to ask Ambleside Horticultural & Craft Society organisers was how had the contributors managed to grow anything during such a dreary few months. “It’s all about being flexible,” said committee chairman David Capstick. “Some things will grow very well when it’s cold and wet. You have to take the rough with the smooth.” If all else fails, of course, instead of growing plants you can always knit them! That’s what committee member Verna Jackson did a couple of years back when her plants were ruined by a sneaky jackdaw attack. Out came the knitting needles, and into the plants section went some wooly vegetables. “It’s now a bit of a tradition that I do this,” she said, showing off a nifty line in Swiss rolls that, by rights, should have been in the crafts section but were, instead, nestling among the veg. They still looked tasty, though.

He has created ‘The Classic Menu’, with firm British favourites such as Chateaubriand with mashed potatoes and wild mushroom or Coq Au Vin with mashed potatoes, hen of the woods, celeriac, micro carrot and pancetta crisps.

Dom, originally from Altrincham in Cheshire, has arrived in fine style and has already created two new menus from scratch for the Two AA Rosette restaurant.

Dom has worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years and brings with him a wealth of experience and innovation. He has worked in a number of award

“People’s buying habits have changed so we’ve had to offer more than fruit and vegetables,” said owner Margaret Spence, who has been running her store in the town’s Market Place for the past 32 years.

Then there is Dom’s Eastern influenced menu, ‘The Ryebeck Menu’, bursting with complex flavours complimenting simple fresh ingredients, such as wild stone bass with a miso broth, or Cumbrian lamb rump and confit croustillant, with sweet potato.

“You name it, we’ve got it,” she said. At that moment, a chef from the nearby White Lion wandered in. “Everything was on our delivery except parsley,” he said. “Have you got any?”

Dom’s food philosophy is straightforward. ‘’The food I aim to create is all about delighting the senses, it’s about texture, flavour, and the way it’s presented."

“We did have,” replied Margaret, “but your manager came in earlier and bought the lot!”

The Cumbria Women of the Year event aims to find special ladies who are often unsung heroine’s of our county and honour those who doggedly work for the good of others. Nominations are made by members of the public who may know someone who embodies the aims of the award Nominees span all walks of life. The woman may be a devoted carer or charity worker, recognised for her outstanding professional achievement, often going beyond the call of duty. They may be recognised for their personal sacrifice or their ability to overcome adversity and offer inspiration to others. They could have gained success in sport or made a positive difference to the people around them. Last year's winner was Doreen Beattie - a carer and fosterer from Kirkoswald. The difficult task of selecting a winner is undertaken by the committee, which is made up of 14 voluntary community representatives from all over the county. Chairwoman, Tess Hart said "It is 26 years since the Cumbria Women of the Year annual event started in 1990 and it is very heartening that after all those years of holding this annual event, which is dedicated to rewarding those women who work selflessly

for the benefit of others, to still be receiving such worthy public nominations from around the whole of Cumbria. We are constantly struck by the enormous generosity of spirit, tenacity and courage which drives so many women to do so much for others.”

To celebrate all those achievements a special new venue for the presentation luncheon in November will be the Laura Ashley Hotel The Belsfield in Windermere, when the Cumbria Woman of the Year and the Cumbria Life Lifetime Achievement Award will be announced. This year the event will raise money for the Lake District Calvert Trust and Blood Bikes Cumbria.

Make A Nomination before 30th September The award relies on people who take the time to write sincere and enthusiastic nominations about exceptional women who make a significant difference within their communities. We welcome nominations of such women from all walks of life in Cumbria. Give as many details as possible of the achievements, personality and significant contributions to the community and over what period of time, by the special lady you wish to tell us about. Please complete and return the nomination form which is available on the website.

During a routine inspection of the external lime render wet rot, affecting the two main timbers in the oldest part of the house, was discovered. There is an urgent need to remove and replace them. Now the National Trust in the Lake District is launching a fundraising drive to repair and protect the Grade 1 listed house. The work, which will require the closure of the house to public in October, is estimated to cost in excess of £100,000. As the house is small its contents, including the priceless library of historic texts, on subjects as diverse as early farming techniques, medicine or household management, will have to be packed and protected while work is going ahead. This alone will cost £5000, while repairing and replacing the beams is likely to cost in excess of £50,000. It’s likely that Townend will have to remain closed for part of 2016 To replace the damaged section of the beams with new timber the 500 year-old farmhouse will need to be surrounded with scaffolding to support the weight of the structure while the repairs are carried out. The job will include replacing the slates above the timbers that keep rainwater off the house and external re-rendering and decoration. “Imagine what it feels like to press against a 400 year old solid oak beam and feel it crumble beneath your fingers,” said National Trust Custodian Emma Wright, “I was shocked, then extremely fearful for the future of this wonderful building.”

“It’s a daunting time, but exciting too.’ she adds. ‘This place is full to the brim with the character of the Browne family who lived here for centuries. But how was it built? How old are the original timbers? And how did the Brownes move a huge oak beam the size of a tree trunk into position in around 1600? We now have a unique chance to uncover some of this hidden history.” Visitors are already showing their support for Townend; over £5,000 has been raised so far, but there is still much more needed.

Donations can be made online by visiting our Just Giving page at: www.justgiving.com/Townend-NT Or contact Fundraising Coordinator Liz Guest to find out more on 015394 63806. or email: liz.guest@nationaltrust.org.uk

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Autumnwatch

Lone Rangers no more.... To celebrate International Ranger Day, last month, the National Trust gathered its countryside staff alongside colleagues and peers from organisations such as Natural England, Cumbria Rivers Trust and United Utilities.

Keynote speaker at the event was Gordon Miller, from the International Ranger Federation, who described the challenges faced by Rangers around the world working in Protected Areas. He described the ever- increasing threats including poaching, encroachment on protected area and that rangers in the field often pay the ultimate price for their devotion to the task.

Gordon said of the event: “This past 12 months has seen over 50 rangers from 20 countries lose their lives to poachers, from others threatening their

parks and accidents. Most losses are from homicide and others from accidents that illustrate the often hazardous environment that they face, particularly in developing countries.

“World Ranger Day gives us an opportunity to pay homage to those who have perished and urge governments to ‘protect the protectors’. The dedication of rangers, particularly in the developing world, deserves our gratitude if our precious protected areas are to remain havens for our diminishing natural and cultural assets.” Sam Stalker, Lead Ranger for the National Trust in the western Lake District, and event organiser said: “Opportunities for Rangers to get together and share their professional knowledge are few and far between – we’re almost always out in the landscape we love. Days like

The Ambleside celebration also included the announcement that the National Trust has become a corporate member of the Countryside Management Association.

The National Trust is Europe’s largest conservation charity and we believe in the importance of nature, beauty and history in people’s lives. We care for 20% of the Lake District National Park, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, its deepest lake, Wastwater, its precious wildlife, 90 tenanted farms, and the cultural heritage within a dozen historic buildings. We support 300 jobs in Cumbria and the Lake District and each year we work with local volunteers, who help us look after one of England’s most inspirational landscapes.

The Trust is dependent on the support of its members and the visitors we welcome to our special places each year: every penny we raise in Cumbria is invested in caring for this special place, for ever, for everyone. www.nationaltrust.org.uk

October is the month when the autumn colours of the trees and shrubs at Holehird are at their best. The leaves of the very many Acers in the garden, commonly known as maples, change colour before they fall. The trees turn yellow, red or orange producing a spectacular sight throughout the garden. The leaves of other trees also change; those of Sorbus, mountain ashes, generally turn to red, while some of the birches turn yellow. Berries of different colours are in abundance, red on the cotoneasters, red, white or pink on sorbus, purple on a callicarpa. There is even a yellow berried holly. Red fruits are the first to be eaten by hungry birds. Shrubs also change colour. The leaves of Euonymus elatus compactus, turn a vibrant red before falling. There are still plenty of flowers in bloom. Asters and

BUSINESS

Very Smart Home Design

Take Notice. It’s The Law

Although the No-Smoking laws have been in place for 7 years now there is still a legal requirement for businesses to display No Smoking signs.

An exciting new design hub bringing together smart technology with the best interior furnishing is to be launched in Cumbria.

The law requires no smoking signs to be displayed in a prominent position at every entrance to the business premises. Failure to comply with the laws is a criminal offence and carries a fixed penalty notice of £200.

The new centre at Special Spaces, Overbeck, Woodland Road, in Windermere will be a showcase for some top craftsmen and designers, with state of the art home cinema, audio and lighting set into custom built furniture in an ideal-home setting. This marks the start of a partnership between Andrew Smith, who has been running the Special Spaces showroom and is also managing director of Lakeland Fells Furniture, and Matt Holmes and Ben Tomlinson of smart technology specialists Epixx.

The South Lakeland District Council’s Public Protection Group holds a limited number of free no-smoking stickers in stock. You can also download them from smokefreeengland.co.uk or order them on 0800 169 1697.

Ambleside Guest House Sold

Cherry Garth Guest House, a 19th-century Lakeland house which was on the market for £850,000 in Ambleside, has been sold to experienced hoteliers Joe and Sarah Warzecha. Cherry Garth Guest House is less than a five minute walk from the bustling town of Ambleside. Boasting spectacular views of the stunning lakeland fells and 12 en-suite letting bedrooms. The sale was handled by Martin Davis, director at Christie + Co's Manchester office. He said: “Cherry Garth presented an ideal opportunity for buyers looking to purchase a lifestyle business. The vendors have owned the hotel since 2004 and have built up a fantastic reputation, earning them an AA 4-Star rating."

Mr Davis reports strong sales in Cumbria's hospitality industry thanks to favourable rates of return in northern England. He explained: “We are pleased to report that the recovery in the hotel sector that we saw in 2014 has continued in the first half of this year.

"We have experienced a further increase in activity across all aspects of our business compared with 2014.

Matt and Ben, of Epixx, who say they “live and breathe technology”,will be based at the Special Spaces showroom. They are independent consultants and designers specialising in

"In addition to attracting experienced regional operators and high net-worth individuals, it is interesting to note the increase in the number of overseas buyers that are looking for hotel opportunities across Cumbria and the North West of England, given the favourable rates of return when compared with their own countries, as well as those seen in London and the South East, where Bricks and Mortar values and operational costs can be considerably higher.”

Andrew’s Special Spaces showroom and handcrafted furniture proved to be the ideal solution. Due to open at the end of September, the design hub will be a showcase for anyone needing home or commercial technology, with items for sale, and where bespoke designs can be ordered.

Charting a course to continued success Once again Windermere Lake Cruises sits atop the list of most visited paidfor tourist attractions in the North West in figures published by VisitEngland in August. Of the 1608 registered places of interest across England only 3 landmark monuments in London and Yorkshire’s Flamingo Land beat a trip on the lake in the 2014 survey. Accommodating nearly 1.5 million tourists is no mean

feat, especially given the seasonal highs and lows of tourism in the Lake District. Nevertheless this represents a 4.1% increase in visitor numbers on 2013.

Although no doubt helped by the good weather that we enjoyed last summer this continues a remarkably steady growth for Windermere Lake Cruises which has been offering voyages on Windermere, in various guises, since 1845, with the present ownership

ART & MUSIC

Old Courthouse Gallery 21st Birthday

It is hard to believe that it was 21 years ago that Andrew and Sylvia Brammall visited Hereford College to see not only their son, Christopher’s work at the graduate show but all the other students.

They were so impressed that it proved to be the spark for the opening of OCG in Market Place. After much renovation work the gallery was up and running, with the help of daughter Amanda and daughter in law Heidi, plus two granddaughters Wren and Izzy who loved being ‘gallery girls’, with all the fittings and stairs designed and made by Chris, it was and still is very much a family affair. They believe it is privilege to have such a long established business in the heart of the beautiful Lake District.

Starting on the 12th September is their 21st birthday exhibition entitled CUMBRIA, which will run to 17th October with 40 artists across all mediums participating.

The quiet little village of Witherslack, just off the A590 in South Lakes, will be buzzing again as it does every year in September and October when the annual exhibition by the Witherslack Artist and Makers Group takes over the idyllic Old School Room next to the church. This year is the 20th annual exhibition of work by the group which brings 16 local exhibitors together to show their new work in this inspiring setting. In 2011 Charlie Whinney used the setting to wrap a tree in steamed plywood which certainly made a different statement. Regarded as one of the best of it’s kind in Cumbria, this colourful exhibition is professional, exciting and superbly presented to their discerning, and constantly growing, audience. The range of works use traditional and contemporary techniques in media including, prints, paintings, basketry, furniture, glass, ceramics, jewellery, stone carving and textiles. All are available to purchase. This year’s guest artists will be Imogen Bone and Elizabeth Shorrock. Imogen is an established painter working from her studio at The Factory, Kendal, inspired by the dramatic landscapes of Cumbria, Cornwall and the Scilly Isles. Elizabeth creates folded paper structures in the form of books and sculptures. She used maps and recycled texts and recently has begun to incorporate her own prints.

Exhibiting this year are: Imogen Bone, Jane Bradley, John Calver, Fiona Clucas. Martin Copley. Owen Jones, Beverley White, Elizabeth Shorrock, DJ Roodhuyzen, Sue Gilmartin, Judy Evans, Jacqueline Dobson, Hans Ullrich, Alvin.F.Irving, Eileen Strand, Jo Vincent, Pip Hall, Paul Girling. Once again, this is an exhibition not to be missed, in its serene setting it manages to uplift the spirit with the beautiful artworks on display.

It’s open daily from 10am until 5pm from 12th Sept – 11th Oct. Admission is free and at weekends refreshments are available at the church next door. There will be signs for the exhibition to follow from here. The exhibition is located next to St.Paul’s Church, straight past the turning to Halecat.

Ambleside & District Art Society Will be holding their annual exhibition, from Wednesday 14th October until Sunday 25th October in Ambleside Parish Centre. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm daily (except both Sundays opening at 10.30am and last entry on the final Sunday at 3pm). The exhibition will be opened by Mr Geoff Atkinson, Hotelier, Salutation Hotel, Ambleside.

To celebrate the founding of the society just over 40 years ago, Ambleside and District Art Society will be launching sales of a special postcard book of images by 30 different artists, all working within a 10 mile radius of Ambleside. This shows the incredible range of styles and talent within the society and will be well worth the small sum charged.

Amongst the society’s members are Mary Lauritzen, Marylin Tordoff and Mike Labrum, as well as emerging Lakeland artists, demonstrating the diversity of talent within the society. Marylin is known for her beautiful 22

Hardly lonely. Wordsworth legacy is as popular as ever.

‘I wandered...’ is a new book that celebrates that most iconic of Wordsworth poems on the 200th anniversary of its definitive version being published. This collaboration between poet Gary Boswell and Cumbrian based Japanese artist Hideyuki Soube has come about thanks to the foresight of Peter Elkington, Curator of Rydal Mount in Grasmere, home of William Wordsworth for the last 37 years of his life, has this year hosted a companion exhibition including a new portrait of Wordsworth by Soube which places him above an infinite field of the eponymous daffodils. Soube says that ‘I wandered...’ revaluates the spirit of Romanticism for the modern age by “taking a contemporary interpretation of the love of nature felt by Wordsworth, and using visual language to present a new body of work”.

New Expressions: Uta Kogelsberger Lakeland Arts, Wordsworth Trust and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery have commissioned artist Uta Kogelsberger to produce a new body of work inspired by the three venues' collections, buildings and surrounding landscapes. Uta Kogelsberger lives in London and lectures in Fine Art at Newcastle University. Since completing her Masters degree in sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London, she has been working primarily with photography and film to create intense works often looking at landscape. She has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally. New Expressions 3 has been made possible by an Arts Council England National pathfinder programme that fosters collaboration between contemporary artists and museums.

Something to get steamed up about 26 year old Robert Beale, who is currently second in command on the famous ‘steamer’ the MV Tern, has written a new book, “Lakeland Waterways”, a history of travel on the lakes. Robert who is originally from Silverdale, has worked with Windermere Lake Cruises since 2008 and is one of the youngest ever skippers of a Windermere ‘steamer’. He published his first book “Steamers of the Lakes” in 2011.

The heritage of England’s most iconic lakes features in the book, co-written with Richard Kirkman, which celebrates a history of travel in the English Lake District, including Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater and Derwentwater. With a wealth of archive photography and previously unpublished research, it gives an insight into sailing on the lakes from the Romans and Vikings right through to the present day.

Windermere is the UK’s top photo spot – are you surprised? The results of the Nikon UK’s Favourite Views Survey are in and show that Windermere in the Lake District was the place favoured by most photographers (38%), according to the Nikon poll of more than 2,000 photography enthusiasts.

Left to right - Robert Beale, Margaret Reid,Greg Simpson

The book was officially unveiled aboard Windermere’s most historic vessel, which has operated on Windermere since the 1890s. Robert says, “This book has been a labour of love. I spent more 7 years researching historic documents including timetables, guidebooks

“Surprised? Not really! Windermere is so well known, and easily accessible by road and train, and it’s a great starting point for exploring the Lakes, along with Ambleside and Keswick. Castlerigg stone circle, Loughrigg Tarn, Blea Tarn and Langdale Valley are all particular favourite places of mine to shoot in the Lakes, while Coniston Water has some great locations without the crowds. Autumn is my favourite time of year to be there, with the fall colours and a hint of the coming winter in the air, but it’s a great place to visit whenever you get the opportunity.”

For more than two decades, award-winning pro photographer Jeremy Walker has been making stunning landscape and architectural images for advertising, editorial and design clients worldwide. Recently named Nikon UK’s new Landscape Ambassador, Jeremy tells us about what the Ambassador role means, why it’s no surprise that the Lake District has been voted the country’s favourite photo location, and what his own top spots are… and also makes a rather surprising confession Now that picture up there. Is it really Windermere?

Lakeland Waterways has been published by Lily Publications and is now stocked on Amazon. It is also available from a range of Cumbrian retailers at a cost of £19.95.

Dear Editor, I have just enjoyed the richness of news and prospects contained in the August/September issue.

I am struck by the enterprise of some local Primary Schools. When, as the new Director of Education for Westmorland, I visited every Primary School in the academic year 1967/68, I was struck by the extreme isolation of so many small schools. many heads that I talked with had not visited another Primary or Secondary school in their career and were ignorant of the mass of books and materials available to illustrate new branches of the curriculum.

So I told Heads of all Primary schools they were to go out and about for one day in each term and that the cost of a supply teacher would be met. Some went to open day at their local Secondary School, some went to see the exhibition of books at the Teacher centre in Kendal.

But school expeditions were unusual. I encouraged schools to join together to visit local castles, historical sites and nature reserves. Some schools took no part so staff and pupils remained bound by the limits of their classroom. It’s apparent from your magazine that some schools in this area need no encouragement to get out and about, to experience communal life, to learn what responsibility each must take and to see their teachers as friends in the learning process. In the same article was a picture of Windermere Picture House. Not a bus stop as was suggested.

CHURCH NEWS

ST. MARY'S 160!

St. Mary’s held a 160th Birthday Party ( Patronal Festival *) and Service on Sunday 6th September. The service at 11am was followed by a Buffet Lunch. * A Patronal Feast is the occasion on which a parish annually honours the saint who was chosen as the Patron Saint of the parish.

The party was due to take place on 6th September just after we went to print with this issue but we discovered that a chapel was first on the site in 1848 and was steadily extended until finally St. Mary's was consecrated as a parish church in 1856. St. Mary's Church came into being as a direct result of the coming of the railway to Windermere in 1846. The population of the scattered township of Applethwaite increased rapidly and there was obvious need

for a church more central than those at Bowness or Troutbeck. The church was almost destroyed by arson attack in August 1988 but fortunately Restoration work started on the church in March 1989 and was completed in the summer of 1990. Now a modern and well equipped space with great acoustics (I know as my entire family have sung in there with different choirs and school performances). over the years - Ed.)

Selling Blessed Insurance! Popular Windermere-based insurance broker Rob Nicholson is swapping the world of finance for the cloth as he prepares for four years training to be a priest. Rob, who has worked at Simpson & Parsons in the High Street for 11 years, is about to take up residency at the Highland Theological College in Dingwall, Inverness, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands. “You could say I’ll be selling blessed insurance!” he said. It’s a big step for Rob, who, in the midst of all this, has moved the family home from Windermere to Wigton, where his wife Mel is taking up a teaching position. “I’ve always been religious, and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time,” said father of two grown-up children Rob, who was rather coy when asked about his denomination. “Probably . . . a reformed evangelical with a hint of charismatic thrown in,” he said.

Wedding Bells at the Filling Station On 15 July, Rev Brian Streeter, much loved Anglican missioner at Troutbeck, and Regional Director for Filling Station Ministries in the north of the UK, married Anne Mayo from Windermere. He has recently left Troutbeck to take up a post as Priest-inCharge of three churches in the Furness Deanery. Brian will be the speaker at our October meeting when we hope to hear of the exciting developments as Filling Stations spring up in the north - Yorkshire, Lancashire and Scotland all have new and enthusiastic groups meeting together. Brian will be busier than ever … and for those who know him … that means WOW ! Join us on Thursday 15 October at 7:30 at the Marchesi Centre in the middle of Windermere. You’ll be most welcome. Together we’ll give thanks to the Lord for all these signs of new life and love in our communities. Take

a look at our website thefillingstation.org.uk to find out about the vision and history of this vibrant movement - and you can phone 07584079607 for further info on the local meetings.

SOCIETY ROUNDUP

Summer welcomes offered by the Lakes Line Rail User Group

Lakeland Disability Support

Lakeland Disability Support is a local grant-making Trust, set up to help disabled people in South Lakeland. The purpose of the Trust is to give grants of financial assistance to help to improve the quality of life for people in South Lakeland who have a physical disability.

Tim Brown from Ambleside talking to an overseas visitor

The group started this a couple of years ago, and have continued it as it is so appreciated. The idea is to get visitors arriving by train to get the most out of their stay here. Volunteers travel on the busiest morning trains between Oxenholme and Windermere on school holiday Saturdays, and have travel information for visiting passengers. The most popular items on journeys from Oxenholme are Stagecoach bus timetables, information about boat trips on the Lake and Go Lakes 'Traveller's Guides'. Robert Talbot, LLRUG Chairman and organiser of the welcome

teams, has written in his report: ‘Our welcomes, on all Saturdays from 18th July until the end of August, including additional forays on some Sundays and over the bank holiday weekend, have been as successful as ever. Passengers are very appreciative of onward travel information from Windermere, suggestions for activities and other local knowledge which we bring to the system. Stagecoach, its local bus timetable distributors and Go Lakes have been pleased with our ventures. All of our many volunteer members have also thoroughly enjoyed their work.'

Funding may be given for respite care, day care, equipment and services that will enhance the life of disabled people, and which the applicant or social services are unable to provide. It is not the purpose for the Trust to provide the primary support that is the responsibility of the local authority. The Trustees meet quarterly, in January,

Rewarding, challenging and interesting…. were the top 3 words used by people to describe their volunteering experiences. Research has shown that 2 in 3 volunteers have said volunteering reduces stress and that 1 in 2 said their physical and mental health had improved.

SCHOOL REPORT

New Children’s TV Programme Filmed at Windermere Preparatory School Windermere Preparatory School has been used as one of the locations for the filming of a brand new CBeebies programme, ‘Down on the Farm’.

The Year 1 children at Windermere Preparatory School were chosen to star in the production – impressing the crew with their enthusiasm and camera-readiness. The film crew filmed the children on a nature trail

They explored badger setts, looked under rocks and logs, listened to the sound of the birds and tried to spot any other evidence of nature activity, such as nibbled leaves and gnawed pine cones. The director, Jaqui McAlpine, who also directed Balamory, made sure that everyone had a turn in front of the camera if

Developing a School Vision at St Cuthbert’s The return to school in September can be a relief for many parents but also a nervous time for both children and teachers. This is typically short lived as children are helped to settle into routines quickly children and are brought back up to speed academically after a lull in work over the summer.

For St Cuthbert’s, the start of term will be exciting as staff and governors will be coming together for a joint whole staff and governor meeting. A school and its leadership, a focus of every school’s scrutiny, strengthens when everybody comes together to create and share a common vision for the school. It is exciting that the final outcome from this meeting is not yet known. What the Head does

Governors play a key role in all schools and require a committed group of volunteers, dedicated to the leadership and success of a school. The team of governors at St Cuthbert’s come from a great mix

Libraries are much more than books!

Ambleside Library Kelsick Road, Ambleside

Learn something new at Ambleside Library this autumn. Courses starting in September:

‘Down on the Farm’ is a five part series which explores the outdoor world of farming and the countryside. Starting in August, the BBC Scotland production will be presented by former JLS star JB Gill and Scottish presenter Storm Huntley. The pair will visit a variety of farms throughout the series, as well as getting stuck in with growing projects and adventure schools, where children are encouraged to embrace the outdoors and learn about the environment.

The Headteacher, Peter Harrison served as a school governor for several years prior to joining St Cuthbert’s. He would urge any adult in our communities with a desire to support and develop our schools, to get involved in school governance and make themselves known to their respective school’s headteacher. Nationally, school governors are in decline and every school needs the best governance we can give to our children and their families.

“Being a school governor is a commitment with immense satisfaction putting our children and their future at the fore of what we all need to be a part of.”
