The council will be using a budget of nearly £3.7 million to routinely treat around 2,400km (approx 1,490 miles) of highway, covering around one-third of the county’s whole road network – the equivalent of driving from Penrith to Barcelona. The council continues to work in partnership with a number of community groups in Cumbria to enable local minor roads to be treated and ploughed as necessary. The council can also call on the help of more than 150 volunteers, known as Snow

Champions, who keep local footways and footpaths clear of snow. Anyone interested in becoming a Snow Champion can call 0845 609 6609.

Members of the public can keep track of the council’s daily gritting plans for the road network this winter via the council’s website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/gritting and through their dedicated Twitter account, @CumbriaGritters

A full list of the Priority 1 and 2 routes is available on the council’s website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/ gritting

Steady on there! Windermere Town Council is considering supporting the introduction of a 20mph speed limit for Windermere and Bowness and they want to know how you feel about this. The initiative is being launched as “Go20”.

It would not apply to the A roads (Rayrigg Road, Lake Road, Kendal Road and Newby Bridge Road.) which remain at the the current limits set for them. The proposal is that the rest of the roads are limited to 20mph to hopefully enhance the safety of the area for both residents and visitors alike. It would be purely a speed limit. There would be no physical barriers or speed bumps etc.

Rydal Hydro Project is officially opened The £2m hydro-electric renewable energy project at Rydal Hall, Ambleside was opened by Bishop of Carlisle, James Newcome, in a special ceremony on 20th October.

The new turbine is now fully operational providing renewable energy for the Rydal Hall estate with extra capacity being diverted into the National Grid. This is the largest hydro-electric scheme in the Lake District National Park and replaces the previous hydro-plant in Rydal Beck, which was more than 90 years old.

Ellergreen Hydro worked with Kendal based hydro turbine manufacturers Gilbert, Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, who supplied the original hydro system at Rydal. The abstracted water travels over 700m underground to the new power house generating output of up to 500kw before re-entering the beck.

Mark Cropper, Managing Director of Ellergreen Hydro, who delivered the project, said: “This scheme has required a huge amount of care over construction so any impact on existing woodland was kept to a minimum. We were supervised throughout by an ecologist to ensure this was the case. It’s wonderful to see the recently commissioned hydro scheme able to generate electricity in harmony with the environment while also recognizing it represents a major contributor to the National Park's Low Carbon Vision.”

Your Bus… Use It or Lose It

Friends of the 597 (Fo597) can show support by wearing a badge and carrying a bag. The new fabric shopping bags, and pin on lapel badges were launched outside the Goodly Dale Health Centre on Tuesday 20th October The bags, emblazoned with the Fo597 name and logo, have been beautifully designed and produced by Coniston Embroidery. Badges carry the same logo. All income from sales will go towards funding the bus.

The 597 bus service operated by Lakeland Commercials, follows a circular route on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, from Windermere Station, through Droomer, Windermere Park, Craig Walk, Biskey Howe, Helm Road, Windermere Health Centre at Goodly Dale, Thornbarrow Road, Ellerthwaite Road, Windermere Centre and back to the station. The 597 bus is ‘Hail and Ride’, stopping when and where requested. There are 6 circular journeys, the first leaves Windermere at 9.35am and the last leaves at 12.05pm. Dorothy Hill Fo597 Treasurer said “The 597 bus stops directly outside the Health Centre at Goodly Dale and this is a much valued part of the service, providing the elderly with virtually door to door service to

the Doctors’ Surgery”.

Until October 2014 the 597 service was subsidised by Cumbria County Council but this funding was withdrawn following budget cuts. Windermere Town Council gave a temporary reprieve until March 2015. Friends of the 597, was formed by volunteers in April 2015 with the sole aim of raising sufficient funds to continue the bus service in the long term. The group has the active support of Town, District and County Councillors. Generous and much appreciated support has been received from Lakeland, Cumbria Community

Foundation-Holehird Trust Fund, SLDC Community Fund, Furness Building Society, the Lions, and last but not least, from passengers and friends of the 597 who have not only donated, but have also supported fund raising events organised by Fo597. Watch this space as more is planned!

Allan Sykes, Fo597 Secretary said “The best way for residents to help is by travelling on the bus using cash or a ‘Now Card’. Full usage of the bus will ensure its continued life.” For your badge or bag contact: Dorothy Hill 015394 47841 For other information contact: Allan Sykes 015394 45608

Windermere Town Council Meeting

The Rain Man

1st January 2016 sees the 25th anniversary of Peter Bailey measuring and coordinating rainfall statistics in Grasmere. His love of all things weather, first surfaced at school when proverbs such as “Rain before 7 fine after 11” and physical indications of weather to come found in seaweed and pinecones became the inspiration for this lifelong ‘hobby’. Taking over from Brigadier Osmaston in 1991, it became a practical manifestation of his fascination with weather. Working with the standard 5 inch or 127 mm gauge to measure any rainfall. He said “It is more complicated if there is a heavy snow fall”. In quarter of a century he has never had to bracket figures together to indicate that a day has been missed. Records in Grasmere have been kept since 1890; the original notebook is still used today. Contributing to the Cumbria Weather Report, his patient monitoring of the rain has built up a database. One pioneer was George James Symons who was known as the ‘Father of British Rainfall’, the very first to take an interest

Alan Chapman

in weather instrumentation even roping his mother; publishing a book in 1860 called ‘English Rainfall’. Another report ended with a royal touch, recalling a BBC weatherman’s story; on giving a talk to Sandringham WI, the Queen was there, she accurately answered his question of what and where was the lowest ever temperature recorded in the UK – Braemar (-27.2oC) Although no successor has yet come forward to continue rainfall checking, Peter says he doesn’t foresee automation taking over; nearly 60% of all statistics are gathered manually in the UK. www.metoffice.gov.uk

He is a specialist property lawyer dealing with all aspects of the sale and purchase of residential and commercial property. Alan acts for property developers as well as individual buyers and sellers and has many years of sound experience to offer prospective clients.

It was reported that the signs in Queens Park directing dog owners to the safe area for dogwalking activities have been removed by a phantom sign-stealer twice now. The top sports area of the park is off limits to promenading pooches. The Environmental Health Officer has warned that action will be taken against violators.

Windermere Fire Station is not at risk of closure.

Earlier reports in the media included the Windermere facility in the list of stations to close. Councillors were pleased to note the matter was reported in error. Sadly, Stavely is still definitely on the list for closure.

"We haven't got a clue what you're talking about?"

Discussing the Health & Well Being Strategy consultation from the Cumbria NHS commissioning group councillors agreed that the current statistics portrayed are shocking and they could wholeheartedly support the desired outcomes that are set out in the strategy. However, the fact that the document was written in jargon and the lack of any detailed proposed actions mean that it was impossible to evaluate what any changes would be and how they may affect local communities. Councillor John Saunders said that despite many hundreds of thousands of pounds that had been spent on all the reports brought together in the document no forward plan was obvious and the whole process had been a waste of time and money. The Council was of the opinion that, although well meaning, the consultation is actually meaningless. The clerk was asked to write to the Commissioning Group in these terms.

The splendour of the Regency period came back to Windermere when the Claife Viewing Station was officially re-opened after a two year conservation project by the National Trust. Perched on a rocky promontory near the ferry on the West side of the lake the National Trust’s latest visitor attraction (launched in October), tells the story of its colourful history; once a ‘must do’ for visitors on an English Grand Tour, then a place of music and dances for high society. Claife Viewing Station recreates for the modern visitor a sense of the discovery and delight of those earlier times, when a glimpse of the landscape was considered thrilling. Thomas West’s first Lake District guidebook encouraged visitors to appreciate the views in terms of their aesthetic qualities. Influenced by the Picturesque movement, he encouraged people to look at and frame the landscape like a painting – just as visitors do today with cameras and phones. For over a century Claife Viewing Station was used for dinners and dances; with music, decorations and the novelty of getting to the party by first crossing the lake. But by the end of the nineteenth century Claife Viewing Station had fallen out of favour and fell into disrepair.

INSET: John Moffat, General Manager for the National Trust South Lakes

In the last two years work on the buildings and surrounding landscape has been carried out by National Trust stone masons, building teams, volunteers and rangers, alongside many local tradesmen who’ve used their skills to both conserve and breathe new life into one of the Lake District’s earliest tourist attractions. John Moffat, General Manager for the National Trust in the South Lakes says: “We’re very excited to be opening Claife Viewing Station for visitors to enjoy. With the new viewing

platform in place and the courtyard café open, today’s visitors can experience what it would have been like for the very first tourists to the Lake District, over 200 years ago. Now visitors can use Claife Viewing Station to appreciate the stunning Lakes landscape around them or enjoy refreshments in the restored cottage café. The Cafe in the Courtyard is a delightful place to spend some time in the courtyard glade and enjoy snacks and meals of which Wordsworth could only have dreamed. It is open all year-round.

You can travel over on the ferry from Bowness. In less than 15 minutes you’ll leave the busy eastern shore behind you and arrive at the naturally beautiful west shore. Or you can park in National Trust car parks at Ash Landing and Harrowslack. Visitors are welcome to just visit and take in the views or can take a guided walk led by one of the NT’s experienced Rangers (check first for dates). On the fells

CLIVE HUTCHBY

I’ve just spent most of the summer walking the Central Fells, the bootshaped area of Lakeland that stretches from Keswick in the north-west to Ambleside in the south-east, and for much of the time it was a miserable experience. Day after day, from the start of May onwards, summer was held at bay by low clouds and chilly winds, making the fells thoroughly eerie as they seemed to be shrouded in perpetual mist. Mist has its advantages, however. During one walk I met a guy from Doncaster who confessed he had a problem walking Lakeland fells – he had a poor head for heights! I resisted the temptation to suggest to Andy Pattinson that he should be footslogging through The Fens or rambling around Romney Marsh, and posed the obvious question: “What’s going to happen when you try to climb Steeple?” “‘No problem,” he replied cheerfully. “I’ll do it in mist.” And that’s a strange kind of optimism, when you think about it. Walkers with no such height affliction invariably set off for a day in the fells hoping for empty skies

6

and crystal-clear views, and it is, indeed, a rare day in Lakeland when there is not one magical glimpse from a summit or ridge of a sun-bathed valley way below or a brooding tarn wrapped in rocky arms (summer of 2015 largely excepted!).

And so it was as I climbed Pike o’ Stickle from the infrequently used Stake Pass path, having seen very little since beginning the 39 zigzags (I counted them) leading to the summit of the pass from the foot of Mickleden. As I neared the top of the cone-like peak the mist suddenly lifted, unveiling the full glory of Great Langdale 2000ft below and, barely half-a-mile away, the pointed summit of Loft Crag... and there was a fellow fellwalker standing on the top! He was headed my way, I was headed his, and we met in the middle and exchanged pleasantries. Keith, from Warrington, told me that a week earlier he had climbed Bowfell and slipped and fallen on the way down. "I'm okay with going up, it's the descents that are the toughest part," he said. Keith is 78. What a great fella; it was a privilege chatting to him. When you meet someone like that, who cares about the weather.

Clive Hutchby, who contributes to Windermere Now, is a writer and designer who is currently revising Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. Books One and Two (the Eastern Fells and the Far Eastern Fells) have already been published, and Book Three (the Central Fells) will be on sale next March.

The Importance Of Good Eye Care Informative. Interesting. Enjoyable. Words you may not normally associate with your eye test, however, this is exactly what a well performed eye examination should be! Simply put, a comprehensive eye exam is one of the most beneficial assessments you can have; not only does it assess all aspects of your vision and eye health, it is an invaluable means of

assessing your general health too. Good vision is essential throughout our lives; in development and educational skills during a child’s informative years, in adulthood where it can govern career choices and activities undertaken, and in later years, vision becomes ever more important in maintaining our quality of life and independence. Tim's Column

As if we needed reminding, the recent, terrifying, burglary in Storrs highlights how important the police are in our part of the world. This seems to be news to the current Government. There can be no other explanation for their recent announcement of plans to change the way that police force funding is decided around the country.

The new funding formula, if it goes through, will result in Cumbria police losing nearly 10% of their funding. This follows on from being asked to find £20 million in efficiency gains since 2010 and the possibility that the Chancellor will ask for further efficiency savings in his Autumn Statement. The result of all this would be that the Cumbria force will have to lose several hundred police officers over the coming years. This will have a major impact on the type of policing we can expect in South Lakeland, some people have suggested that it may well mean that all the police will be able to do is to respond to emergencies. There will be no resource available to become involved in the type of work that prevents crime happening in the first place, the valuable work that the police do to help with the management of visitors around here, all of these types of services will simply have to go and I suspect that policing will become much more concentrated in the major towns and cities of our area. In drawing up its criteria for the new funding formula the Government has made no

allowance for the fact that serving an area as big as Cumbria simply costs more money. Its new criteria are based upon things like the number of bars you find in a particular area (so a village with one pub will score very badly compared to a city with lots of clubs and bars) or the levels of unemployment (so economies like ours which are doing well are penalised). This coming, as it does, hard on the heels of the announcement that the Government would also like to close the court in Kendal, which will have cost implications for the police as well as everyone else, makes me worry that they really do not understand the needs of rural areas.

Ann is back on top

I have written to the Home Secretary to ask her to reconsider the plans and take more account of the needs and costs of policing in areas like ours. I am trying to meet with either her or her police minister as soon as practicable to demand that they change their plans. I will keep you informed of what they have to say. Beyond policing much of my time has been taken up with issues surrounding the hospital. We have just seen the anniversary of the introduction of the “temporary” arrangements for staffing at the Helme Chase Maternity Unit which saw the provision of overnight and weekend cover becoming only on an on-call basis. My worry is that this is being done by the trust as a way of depressing support for the Unit so they can, yet again, try to close it. I will be fighting this very hard As ever if I can help with anything please do get in touch by emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk or phoning 01539 723 403.

Ann Wheeler completes her 214th Wainwright on Pike o’ Blisco under a guard of honour.

It was fitting that Pike o’ Blisco, the Great Langdale fell that was such a part of Ann Wheeler’s childhood, was the setting for her greatest achievement in life. In October, 57-year-old mum Ann completed the 214 ‘Wainwright’ tops by scaling the 2,313ft-high fell, four years after being diagnosed with a rare spinal condition that nearly killed her and has left her permanently in pain. When she was a child, growing up in Great Langdale, she would often gaze up at the mountains, and back then Pike o’ Blisco was one of the most recognisable of all the fells because of its shapely 7ft-high summit cairn. Since then it has been vandalised, but it has been rebuilt to a creditable shape – a resurrection that seems an apt metaphor for Ann’s own struggles. She was diagnosed with cauda equina, a rare condition involving extreme pressure and swelling at the nerves at the end of the spinal cord, and one that usually needs surgical intervention soon after diagnosis otherwise there is a risk of the patient becoming paralysed. “The doctors said I had to have an operation or I would be paralysed in days,” she said. It was a five-hour operation and Ann had to learn to use her legs all over again. She was determined not to use a wheelchair, and decided swimming was the best option to regain her strength. Coniston Water and Windermere (all 10.5 miles of it) were her first big swims, and soon after that she decided to set her sights on the Lakeland fells as part of a charity drive to raise money for the Calvert Trust. In less than three years she made it to the top of all guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright’s fells, culminating in her climb of Pike o’ Blisco. But even then she was thinking ahead. On the way up she whipped off her walking gear to reveal a swimsuit, and plunged into Red Tarn, much to the enjoyment of her thirtyplus walking companions. “Now I’ve finished the fells I’m determined to swim in every one of the Lake District’s tarns,” she declared. Already, even with winter looming, she’s in double figures. Oh, and she’s just started to climb the Wainwrights all over again.

'Graze' ENJOY A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS AT SIZERGH

STAVELEY BAKERS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE

Christmas is about twinkling lights, the sound of carols, the smell of pine needles and mulled wine, the taste of Christmas pudding, the excitement of seeing Father Christmas!

New mums, Amy McWilliamWoods and Gwen Woznikowska

It wouldn’t be Christmas without traditions!

At Sizergh we’ll have a special, sparkling Christmas tree sourced from our own estate and a warm winter glow will welcome as you arrive. Forget about frantic last minute Christmas shopping and have a relaxing time enjoying the festivities with us. Our shop has a great selection of seasonal gifts and Christmas decorations, but if you prefer something a bit more special, why not making your own wreath to take home with you or to give as a present!

If food is more your cup of tea, join our award winning baker who will teach you how to decorate your Christmas cake; all you need to bring is your cake and imagination. Or you can treat yourself to a special Christmas lunch in our café.

Of course, a traditional Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Father Christmas, so we’ve made sure that he stopped at Sizergh on his way to the North Pole. He and his helpers will be waiting for you in their magical woodland grotto.

How can babies resist the home -baking of new mums, Amy McWilliam-Woods and her chef friend, Gwen Woznikowska? They are cooking up a storm on the local baby group circuit.

We knew that we had to do something with this, so we came up with the idea of BabyFriendly Baking Playgroups. Each week features a different bake and there’s singing and toys for the little ones too. Gwen also makes beautifully presented ingredient bags for parents to take home and make the bake themselves.

The task of weaning their babies, together with their love of baking, meant that they were always making their own homemade food and healthy, sugar-free snacks for their young boys.

After starting sessions this September in Kendal and Natland they have now started a group in Windermere in November.

Amy started a Facebook page to share recipes with friends. “It was very exciting,” said Gwen from Staveley, as the Facebook page got shared around the world. “I remember, we were both like giddy children as we kept refreshing the page and hundreds of ‘likes’ kept appearing.”

‘It’s been a very exciting summer, we’re really hoping that people will come and join us and see what it’s all about’. www.babyfriendlybaking.com

FOOD IN THE FELLS

Christmas of fitness and fundraising A local charity is offering an alternative Christmas and New Year to help the area’s vulnerable young. The new Half Marathon, which also starts and ends on the lawn of the Georgian, Brathay Hall on the northern shores of Windermere, is a 13.1 mile route

through Hawkshead to Esthwaite Water. Runners return with views of the iconic Langdales and the surrounding fells. Those who sign up for either event by Monday 4 January will qualify for a money saving early bird offer. Further information can be found at: brathayrunning.com

A guitar shop in Windermere? Surely not! It’s hardly Liverpool, Manchester, London or Nashville, is it? Although try telling that to Stu Burton and you’ll get short shrift.

Always wanted to be a train driver? Ian Charters

“You don’t have to live in a big city to love music,” said Stu. Stu’s Guitar Shop, slap bang in the centre of the town, is proof of that.

Inside it’s a ‘lived in’ atmosphere, with new and secondhand guitars hanging on the walls and propped up on stands, a few amplifiers and speaker combos on the floor, and a motorbike for sale in the window. It’s the sort of place where you want to pick up a guitar and strum along with Stu – but be warned, if you do you’ll have to have a rudimentary knowledge of The Stranglers.

Stu Burton outside his shop in Main Road, Windermere, with one of his favourite James Nelligan guitars.

as well as selling guitars, he teaches how to play them. He moved to the Lake District in 2003 and has lived in Windermere for the past five years. Stu is now 52, 14 years Cornwell’s junior and an amazing 25 years younger than The Stranglers drummer Jet Black, who is still playing at the age of 77. And he’s decided it’s time to form an acoustic Stranglers tribute band; already

The iconic punk/new wave band that burst into prominence in the late 1970s has always been York-born Stu’s favourite. “I saw Hugh Cornwell (the band’s singer/guitarist) on Top of The Pops and I thought to myself, ‘I’ll get a guitar’. I did, then just chucked it on the bed.” It stayed there gathering dust until one day he decided to find a guitar teacher, and now,

“We’re called Three More Heroes,” he said (after the best-selling 1977 album No More Heroes), “but we might be looking for a bass guitarist.” He paused for a moment. “In that case I guess we’d have to be called Four More Heroes.”

We are currently updating our list of businesses selling/serving Fairtrade in Windermere and Bowness in order to renew our Fairtrade Town Status. If you are a business, we would welcome you contacting us with your details!

Lakeland

Every big boy’s dream is driving a steam engine.

ONE of England's oldest and longest narrowgauge railways, is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Affectionately known as La'al Ratty - meaning 'little railway' in old Cumbrian dialect - the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway was a favourite of fellwalker Alfred Wainwright. Although not in the immediate Windermere area it may be of interest to our readership in that, the railway is seeking volunteers who can turn their hand to a wide variety of roles, from manual work such as track laying and line clearance, to platform-based tasks such as driving, guarding and even being stationmaster for the day. The 40-minute journey covers seven miles of spectacular scenery within sight of the Scafell Range, England's highest mountains. It was back in 1913 that the original 3ft line closed, and two years later the new 15" railway was born. There are four heritage steam locomotives in regular service, including the River Irt, the oldest working 15" gauge loco in the world, and the mighty Northern Rock. Volunteers need no particular skills, as training is provided, and the role is described as ideal for those who wish to meet like-minded new friends or fill their time doing something rewarding. All ages, from 16 upwards, can apply, by emailing volunteers@rerps.co.uk or calling 01229 717 171

They decided to relocate their business, and The Rocking Horse Toy Shop opened up in March 2015. They now specialise in traditional wooden toys that are carefully selected based on their quality and play value and not generally found on the high street Amanda told Windermere Now:

“We are constantly looking for toys that are not widely available on the high street, and having spent the last 4 years carefully honing our range, we believe the product range we offer is unique within Cumbria - you won’t find any electronic gadgets, plastic toys or merchandise from the latest TV program. We have many toys that grandparents will remember from

their childhood, that have stood the test of time and are still loved by children today!” The Rocking Horse boasts a number of brands exclusive to Cumbria, such as their Rocking Horses and retro metal race cars and fire engines, which often sell out in days of arriving. “As a family run business, we share the same vision for the future of the business, and it gives us the freedom to try out ideas and make changes that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.”

Marlyn and Amanda are constantly looking out for new products and always aim to have something new on the shelves that can’t be found on the high street.

But working in Asia meant trips home were few and far between during the past ten years. A contributor to Facebook, he noticed a page set up for a reunion at his secondary school in Windermere by a class mate, Sarah Tiffin, 'liking' the page, details for the event followed. Andrew’s last trip home was in 2013, the reunion coincided with a family birthday and to check on Mum’s recovery to better health, he took the opportunity to come back for just a few days to walk through Grasmere and its surrounding fells, enjoy home cooking; see loved ones and old school friends. Even to experience the weather in such contrast of the places he has lived such as Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

World Records tumbling at Coniston The 45th Powerboat Records Week got of to a foggy start but once the weather started to play nicely the records came in thick and fast. Peter Hart from Windermere was the first run of the week and broke the National Record in his Outboard Immersed Prop Mono boat at 109.44mph. The 1st World Record of the week was broken by Alan Pickard in the Runabout Superstock 1200 class at 87.06mph Brian Block was the eldest entry of the week and has established a National World Record at 71.34mph in HR850 Catamaran Boat. The youngest competitor, 14 year old, Thomas Mantripp, has been on the water both days so far but was unsuccessful in his attempt beat the GT15 record. Monday had 38 record attempt runs with 13 World Records broken or rebroken and 2 National Records broken which is one of the most successful first days since the event came to Coniston 11 years ago.

South Lakes Curling League

The second day had another foggy start which was extremely slow to lift. Attempts finally got underway at 1pm with 21 attempts taking place. Records were set which takes the total number of records in the first two days of the week to 21 World and 15 National Records. This year’s event was one of the strongest for entries with 34 signing in by the second day. Coniston Power Boat Records Week is the only event in the Powerboat Racing Calendar to bring

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Tufty fights back

The 10th Anniversary of the Grasmere Squirrel Group sees Red squirrels flourishing in Grasmere. The fight against the Grey Squirrel is well documented. The Red Squirrel population in Grasmere was almost wiped out in 2002/3 by the advancing greys.

Catching the elusive Aurora October saw a burst of activity from the northern lights with reports from across the north of Britain that the greeny-blue, shape -shifting Aurora were widely visible.

Cumbria is certainly not immune to aurora fever and with a clearish sky a medium to strong Aurora event should be perfectly visible here. All you need is a glimpse of a light-pollution free northerly aspect of the night sky; and there are many places where this is easily achieved. The Aurora comes about when a high concentration of charged particles emanating from the sun, usually called solar wind, interacts with the earth’s magnetic field. The resultant loss of energy changes the structure of Oxygen and

Nitrogen atoms, showing up as the familiar green and blue light in our skies. Lancaster University hosts a very straightforward and frequently updated website (aurorawatch. lancs.ac.uk) that offers an “AuroraWatch UK” activity status, also available as an email alert, and of course on Facebook and Twitter. Having spent a week in the Norwegian northern lights hotspot of Tromsø, Cumbria’s green tinged clouds and fells last month weren’t quite as impressive as Norway’s aurora lit fjords. However, there are plenty of pictures around documenting that with a bit of patience and a good location (beyond the back garden!) the northern lights can look every bit as impressive here as in the Arctic Circle.

But success doesn’t happen overnight, and it isn’t just a single battle. It is a continuing campaign of vigilance, reporting, trail cameras, patrols, using local knowledge and technology to track both the red population and incursion of the greys!

Part time Ranger Robert Dixon is on call 7 days, to respond rapidly to sightings supported by a network by people who ring in. In Grasmere, zero tolerance was started in 2009 when a clear out of greys helped a once healthy red population to recover. Greys spread squirrel pox, noticeable by lesions on the animal’s face and listlessness, resulting in a horrible death for the reds in a couple of weeks. Although 2014 was hailed a success, 2015 and future years may not be counted in the same vein, numbers of Reds are rising in the Vale, but Greys find their way along the ribbon of woodland that connects Grasmere to the neighbouring valleys and

EXPLORE

communities. Constant work is necessary backing up the daily patrols, alerting the public of the needs of the programme, and uncertainty of future funding doesn’t give the winter clouds a silver lining. The National Trust has promised to use income raised by the Grasmere Gallop Trail Race 2016 to support red squirrel conservation in the village. Donations from individuals and the public via collecting boxes on several shop counters do help with food costs. However, no other business contributes to funding. As a report states “If the reds are to be preserved the only way this can be achieved is have sustainable funding from businesses. Hotels and other businesses benefit as their customers love seeing them”. Contact Stewart Sutcliffe it you would like to help at grasmerersg@gmail.com.

For grey sightings in Grasmere, phone Robert Dixon on 015394 35527.

On rare occasions, if there has been particularly bad weather, the upper car park can be icy, so then gardens may be closed for safety reasons. Apart from the few days like this, visitors are welcome at all times.

Although reception is closed the gardens are still open and still beautiful. There will be some volunteers about, especially on a Wednesday; collecting the fallen leaves from the trees to make leaf mould, cutting back any herbaceous plants that need attention and pruning shrubs and trees that have become overgrown.

Berrying trees and shrubs often continue to display their fruits into early winter. The red berries of cotoneasters often glisten in the sunshine, while the small purple fruits of Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ are an unusual feature. On clear days the views of the fells are spectacular. If the gates to the walled garden are shut then visitors are asked to close them as they enter and leave, to stop rabbits getting in.

SCHOOL REPORT

Ambleside CE Primary School

Pupils donate festival food Windermere Preparatory School held a special Harvest Festival Assembly in October for the younger pupils in Pre-School to Year 2.

Ambleside Academy comes Alive

The School became ecame an academy on the 1st of October and celebrated this milestone with a celebration day on October 15th. Two VIP guests were in attendance, with Tim Farron offering some lovely words of support and the Bishop of Carlisle blessing the school. There followed a buffet lunch for pupils and visitors and various activities to mark the next chapter in the history of education in Ambleside. The children had a lovely day; they wrote messages of hope for the school and tied them onto the railings, recreated old school photographs and made collages of the school badge. Year Six pupils at the school have completed a ‘bikeability’ training course which will make them better equipped to cycle.

Parents and grandparents were invited to watch the children sing songs and they were also treated to a performance of the Enormous Turnip. The children brought in Harvest hampers which were donated to the Windermere and District Food Bank. Windermere and District Foodbank is located in the Methodist Church on Main Road in Windermere and is open from 12pm – 3pm on

Hawkshead Primary School

The Harvest Service at Hawkshead Primary School was well attended. The coffee morning which followed raised over £200 for Cancer research. Pupils in Year 5/6 have succeeded in winning the South Lakes netball tournament and have progressed through to the next round of the competition. The Head Teacher from their link-school in Tema, Ghana should be making a visit this half term, accompanied by 2 students who will attend John Ruskin school. The link project, on the subject of Invaders and Settlers in Britain, is nearing completion. It has included discussions about current issues such as migration, with information on the same theme from Ghana, letting pupils put together a comparison of the origins and impact of migration/ immigration on our respective countries!

The school, led by two Year 1 pupils, delivered the Harvest hampers to the foodbank on Wednesday, where volunteers were on hand to help them. All food given out by the foodbank is donated, whether by schools, churches, businesses or individuals. The food is sorted according to type and best before date and then stored, ready for distribution to foodbank centres where they are given to those who need it most. The food parcels are designed by

They helped shepherd a huge photograph of a wall through Cylinders Estate on the edge of Elterwater to mark the 50th anniversary of the day. A wall, that was part of an art installation known as the Merzbarn, was moved from the Lake District to the Hatton Gallery at Newcastle University. The school Running club enjoyed a track day under the watchful eye of club coach, British 1500m runner and Olympian, John Kirkbride. Now that the winter is drawing in, the boats have been hauled out of the water for the last time this year. The sailing club continues to be a great success with five more children achieving their RYA level 1 qualification and pupils and teachers alike are already looking forward to next year’s sailing. The summer saw a total refurbishment of the early years and nursery classrooms which now look really good.

"I thought it was going to be boring but this is amazing" St Cuthbert's Primary School left more than footprints at the National Trust's Footprint Building in Patterdale Road, Windermere.

The children spent a day outdoors, as part of the school's development of Global Learning and outdoor education. The headteacher, Peter Harrison said: "We cannot thank Friends of the Lake District, Natural England, Woodmatters and the National Trust enough for coming together to support this event. Experiences such as these are always memorable for children." The children spent the day outside, with talented and experienced leaders and ecologists, Gareth and Ro from Woodmatters exploring the woods, learning about

the importance of trees. The children explored the woods using their senses and discussed the way being in the woodland made them feel. After discussing the use of wood as a fuel both for warmth and cooking, the children learnt how to effectively light a fire without matches. The children looked at how in many parts of the world, wood is the main fuel for cooking and we enjoyed some popcorn we cooked on the fire!

Each of the children came up with different products in our everyday lives that come from trees. The older children then used saws, splitting tools and potato peelers to whittle their own wooden butter knife from hazel.Hear the words from the children themselves. “I love the countryside, it’s full of

ART & MUSIC It all started in a chilly church hall 41 years ago . . . the year of two general elections, of Abba winning Eurovision with ‘Waterloo’, and of Westmorland and Cumberland disappearing following the creation of the new county of Cumbria.

Ambleside Art

Staveley Roundhouse theatre players are set to stage the hilarious Flint Street Nativity from Monday 7th to Saturday 12th December.

In 1974 there were no mobile phones and no internet, but paint had been around for thousands of years, which was as good a reason as any why seventeen hardy souls got together at Ambleside’s Methodist Hall to form Ambleside and District Art Society.

Among the founder members were Marion Riley and her husband Jim who used to own a shop near the Post Office called Trend Design which they ran for ten years in the 1970s and 1980s.

“We were selling so many original paintings we made a living out of art,” said Marion. “I’m not sure that would be so easy these days.” Last year the society celebrated its 40th anniversary; last month it held its 40th annual exhibition, and its membership of more than 100 testifies to the lure of Lakeland as an inspiration for artists.

Marion Riley

“In the summer we have weekly meetings at different venues,” said Marion. “In the winter we are here in the Parish Centre.” Sadly, Jim passed away earlier this year, but his art was given a prominent position at the entrance to this year’s show, with a particularly dramatic watercolour of the Cuillin Hills, on the Isle of Skye, on display.

John Ruskin was a towering figure of the late 19th century, with his philanthropy and moralising influencing Victorian society. First and foremost though, Ruskin was known as an art critic, and in a poacher-turned-gamekeeper fashion Ruskin occasionally turned his hand to producing works of still life drawing and painting. Some of these rare art works by Ruskin have been brought together in a new Brantwood exhibition entitled Life Distilled. His small scale studies are slightly unusual in that the subjects (shells, fragments of rock, a plate of fish) aren’t arranged, but found in a natural disposition, blending science, art and philosophical reflection in an approach that runs counter to the decorative tradition of arranged still life painting. The exhibition will also show studies by some of Ruskin’s friends and associates; displaying the recent acquisition by the Brantwood Trust of a pair of watercolours by Laurence Hilliard, Ruskin’s then secretary, who subsequently became a professional still life painter in 1882. A third complimentary watercolour by the same painter will also be on show, on loan from the Ruskin Museum in Coniston. Amongst works by a couple of Ruskin’s pupils is a composed plant study by Victorian illustrator Kate Greenaway, as well as two works by Edith Isaac who was wife of Ruskin’s final secretary and helper William Gershom Collingwood. Life Distilled is on display in the Blue Gallery at Brantwood, every day from 10.30am until 5.00pm (from 30th November Wed-Sun 10.30am-4.00pm). Admission is included in the house ticket. Fears For Our Police COMING SOON OUR NEW SHOWROOM IN

ULVERSTON!

Windermere Town Council has written to Mike Penning MP Minister of State (Home Office) expressing concerns that as a low-crime area Cumbria may lose more than most in further cutbacks in the Police Forces

Dear Minister Cumbria Police

Windermere Town Council have listened with horror to the reports in our local and national press, which have outlined for us the probable magnitude of cuts to our local police force from 2016 -20.

We understand that these cuts are partly due to the need to balance our national budget but, for Cumbria, the bulk of the cuts appear to be originating from the Treasury’s proposals to make changes to the national funding formula, which will move funds away from Cumbria to other forces.

In Cumbria, crime rates may be lower than some other areas of the country, but fear of crime is real amongst our rural communities and has significantly increased over recent years. There have been several national studies which have confirmed this. The Chief Constable has stated that these cuts will wipe out community policing and leave us with only an emergency “blue response” service. The Town Council cannot stress enough how important community policing is to our area. It is a huge contributor to keeping actual crime levels low and reassuring those who are in fear of crime.

We urge the government to look very carefully at the impact these cuts will have on policing in areas like ours and, if necessary, make proposals which give us a chance to retain our community policing, before it is lost forever.”

Dear Editor,

Your item headed "Langdale says: What about us?" raises the important issue of housing in the Langdale Valley.

The redoubtable Jean Birkett highlights the dramatically high percentages of second homes in Elterwater and Chapel Stile. This problem will be evident to local people, whom your magazine primarily serves, but it needs to be projected at those who buy holiday homes in the Lakes.

I suggest, if I may, that there might be some merit in your contacting the editors of magazines such as Country Life, and national dailies such as the Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail, inviting them to run items on this issue. If the idea were taken up, these concerns of the local population would be brought to the breakfast tables of many of the second-home-owners. At least they would not be able to profess ignorance of the effects of secondhome ownership. I realise that such an exercise would make little difference in practice, but sometimes these things acquire a momentum one could not have forecast. Think for example of that questioner losing her rag on Question Time recently and the contribution thus made to the tax credits issue. Anyway - it's a thought. And whilst I am at it, may I compliment you on Windermere Now. It really is very useful and informative. Pity I missed the Vulcan flight, though... Timothy Bartlett, Windermere

Swansong for Bowness?

Two of the most common complaints made to the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA)at their office in Bowness on Windermere relate to the 40p charge to use the nearby public toilets and people feeding the dozens of waterfowl and other birds along the Promenade and around the bay. Sometimes this area is covered in bird droppings. It is disgraceful, disgusting and there is the possible danger of an outbreak of deadly avian flu. Strain H5N8 is potentially harmful to humans. In November 2014 nearly 6,000 ducks were culled at Nafferton in East Yorks and in July this year 170,000 poultry were culled at Goosnargh near Preston. This is much too close for comfort. Virologist Pof. Andrew Easton of Warwick University said “This disease could spread very rapidly.” It can be spread by bird droppings and visitors to Bowness could carry this infection home on their shoes. The site of men in protective suits shooting everything with feathers will do as much damage to the area as Foot and Mouth did. No doubt DEFRA would impose an exclusion zone. South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) and the LDNPA are fully aware of this problem but they are squabbling over who is responsible. If there is an outbreak of avian flu, both are liable. Each will claim that they have no money but they are able to cooperate on “improvements” to Glebe Road which will swell their coffers while harming Bowness. And no, visitors won’t sit in the shade along the waterfront, 300 yards from the nearest 40p toilet, when they can sit in the sun along the Promenade and enjoy “people watching”. The well-being of locals and visitors and the country take priority over improvements and they must spend this nearly £2 million on the bird problem. They must ban the feeding of all wild birds, at least along the Eastern side of Lake Windermere but preferably the whole Park. Yes, they will have to employ wardens to rigorously enforce this ban but it is their responsibility. Floating barricades will stop the larger waterfowl landing and harassing and pecking the visitors. The recently arrived Canadian Geese are the real problem. They breed like wildfire and it seems that only the NT take a responsible stance over this problem. We need an immediate 90% cull, with a new cull every year. Alternatively the RSPB should collect them all and take them elsewhere. Peter Langford, Bowness

CHURCH NEWS

Christmas… The Greatest Story Ever Told Join us at Lakes Christian Centre on Lake Road, Bowness, on Sunday 20th December as we celebrate Christmas with our special Christmas Carol Services.

The first service will take place at 4.30pm and it will then be repeated at 7pm, so bring your friends and family along to your preferred time. The event is free and we recommend arriving in good time to get a seat.

Our children and youth are looking forward to taking part in our services, and there will also be a short Christmas message on ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ from our Pastor, Mike. So warm up your voices ready for singing Christmas carols, and we hope you’ll join us downstairs afterwards for refreshments and mince pies.

SOCIETY ROUNDUP

Running every day in 2015 for Parkinson's UK At the beginning of this year, Jim Tyson undertook a challenge to run at least 5k every day to raise money for Parkinson's UK having lost his Dad to the disease in October 2014. Jim Tyson is a member of Ambleside AC and was also a member of the junior section of the club as a young local lad. His dad (also called Jim) encouraged his fell running, driving him to races and supporting him and was a keen fell walker, and lover of the fells himself. When his Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2000, Jim had to watch him slowly deteriorate to the point where he couldn't even get up from his chair without assistance. This inspired Jim to make the most of his able body every day and raise money and awareness for people affected by Parkinson's It has been a tough challenge at times, finding time to fit in a run alongside working and family life (Jim and his wife Karen have two boys aged 3 and a half and 2). There have been illness and injuries to run through, but also amazing and inspiring views

Jim Tyson raising money for Parkinsons UK

and the changing landscape of the fabulous Lake District and beyond throughout the seasons.

Every day he tracks his activity and posts to his Facebook and Twitter pages along with spectacular photographs taken daily to mark each run. There

have been many longer runs and tough fell races along the way, including the Three Peaks, Ben Nevis, Duddon Valley and the Kentmere Horseshoe, as well as his 'challenge within a challenge'- running the highest peak of each country in the UK within a 365 daily run streak.

Triathlon X

The toughest triathlon of the lot is coming to Ambleside next year, with Windermere the stage for the first leg of a challenge that will test the mettle (or metal) of every ironman and ironwoman competing. Triathlon X, which was staged in Wasdale this year, will be held on Saturday 25 June, with the swimming leg starting at 4.30am... Organisers have allocated 20 hours of daylight for the race (and even then they have told competitors they need to take a head torch!). In their race description, they issue some stark messages to those taking part: “Be warned! This is the hardest bike section of any ultra distance triathlon anywhere. Before entering the race it is essential that you read this document and understand the difficult and extreme nature of the event. There are mandatory cut off times that must be met. No exceptions will be made.” Entries are now open at www.wasdalex.co.uk

Jingle Bell Jog

The Jingle Bell jog is an exciting festive event set to take place in Bowness on November 29th. A new initiative for 2015, the run begins at Cockshott Point by the lake in Bowness and follows a flat 2km route roughly circumnavigating The Glebe.

The event is family friendly with all ages and abilities welcome, so you can run, walk, crawl or bring your pushchairs or wheelchairs as required. As you might expect from the event title, Christmas outfits are expected of ALL participants, and spot prizes will be handed out to those who have made the most effort. To help people with their Christmas costumes there will be a number of “santa suits” available to purchase with race entries, on a first come first served basis. All proceeds will be donated to Lake District charities and organisers Windermere and Ambleside Lions are keen to encourage all entrants to raise sponsorship for their own charitable causes too. Registration opens at 10am and starters orders are at 11am. Entry is available at:www.eventrac.co.uk

lectricity North West operates the local electricity network in your area.

The power operator owns and maintains the electricity network in the North West of England. It’s their job to deliver a safe, reliable supply of electricity from the National Grid to your home, through their network of overhead lines, underground cables and substations. However, sometimes the local network can be affected by conditions outside of their control, such as extreme weather. If you do experience any unexpected power cuts this winter,

Electricity North West are available on the phone or online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help get your power restored as quickly as possible. Electricity North West also offer a Priority Services Register for vulnerable customers such as those who are medically dependant on electricity. You can sign up for additional support by becoming a priority customer, at www.electricitynorthwest.co.uk/ priority or call 0800 195 4141.
