I cannot look at almost any landscape, however idyllic, without automatically superimposing onto it the multiple images of aftermath scenes that are the reality in all too many places around the world. The disjunction between
the sites where I find myself and those other distant places is an unremitting source of acute disquiet within my apprehensions of abysmal horror in the presence of opulent plenitude.
The reiterative interlacing of various ongoing motifs in my work—aftermath scenes, floral elements, traditional Chinese landscape paintings—into a field trammeled almost to the point of illegibility, is how I continue to grapple. The pieces weave themselves over lengthy periods of time, not with a loom’s stern logic and support; but rather, through the inchoate and unruly modalities of sorrow and remembrance. Hanna Hannah
