Phillip Adams Artist Statement

I explore ideas of place and our complicated relationships to them. Themes and ideas related to nature permeate my work, as I am interested in exploring the impulses to control and reshape our environments. I am interested in the paradox of our desire and striving to leave our mark while simultaneously not acknowledging the impact we do have. I explore our need to create, destroy, recreate, and the physical recording of our efforts. I arrive at concepts that test the fragile balance that teeters between play and responsibility. This fragility is seen in the imagery I create, but also with the materials that I use. The use of charcoal in my studio and large-scale outdoor projects link the materiality of carbon to the imagery and further connects my work on an elemental and environmental level.
