The parable of the mustard seed
describes the growth and prolific yield of one very tiny seed. Exciting transformations can happen in unexpected places and forms. The mission of the mustard seed school is to serve students struggling to reach their potential in the traditional school model through hands-on learning disciplines--science, music, food preparation, and art. Additionally, one-on-one tutoring provided by members of the community and peers roots students where they live. To demonstrate progress and growth, the architectural design is premised on increasing angles of growth and rhythms of ceiling height changes. Use of transparent and sustainable materials underscores the philosophy and ideals of this learning space.

Process: Development of Space Organization and Circulation Architecturally divided into four vertical bands to accommodate the four target subjects, each of these bands are further divided into three sections--a study equipped with materials specific to the subject, an exhibition space or recording space or cafe, and a classroom or “learning lab.
Corridor Boundaries and Wall Angles of Exhibition Spaces, Recording Space, and Cafe Suggestive of a growing and developing trajectory, the boundaries of the main corridor follow a pattern of increasing angles. All of the angles turning west and which compose the southern boundaries of each of the surrounding spaces (the dedicated study spaces and the exhibition, recording, and cafe areas), are positioned at ten degrees. See figure below.
The angles turning east and which compose the northern boundaries of each of the surrounding spaces each increase by five degrees. Therefore, the science exhibition space and its corresponding study have northern boundaries at ten degrees, while the music recording studio and its corresponding study have northern boundaries at fifteen degrees. See figure at left.
Windows and Walls of the Exhibition Spaces, Recording Space, and Cafe The walls of these spaces facing the main corridor are divided into six sections to accommodate door niches and four six-inch floor to ceiling windows. Of these four windows, however, the window opposite the vertex of its corresponding study floor boundary (at a ten degree angle), doubles in width. The length of the segmented walls for each of these spaces similarly follows a growing pattern. They increase in width by approximately one to two feet until they reach the threshold of its double wide window. At the double-width window threshold, the intervals of the wall widths repeat the pattern of the starting small and growing in scale.

Through “recast preservation”, the memory and texture of the Woodrow Wilson house is preserved beyond the exterior walls. Decorative shapes and designs found in the original furnishings articulate a new architecure for a new population and purpose. Thus, these delicate and historic elements are “recast” in reconstructed dimensions. On floor and wall surfaces, original shapes and forms repeat themselves in bold, graphic arrangements with vibrant, youthful color.

a restaurant
Edna Lewis (1916-2006) was a chef of fine southern cuisine and a personality of fascinating dualities. While she learned to cook by watching her mother and aunt in rural Virginia, she created meals for an elite clientele at her cosmopolitan restaurant, Cafe Nicholson, in New York City. Although she was actively involved in communist politics, she sewed Dior dresses for Dorcas Avedon and Marilyn Monroe. Perhaps the tension of the dichotomies in Lewis’ life kept her ever-brilliant at her culinary and dress-making talents. Whatever fibers composed Lewis’ fabric, she sewed lovely stories.

The jewelry of indigneous peoples in Angola and the natural landforms of their homeland in the context of a modernizing landscape is the inspiration of the Luanda Hotel. The juxtaposition of local identity amidst global modernity underscores Angola’s struggle to reclaim their culture and land after centuries of Portuguese colonial rule and subsequent civil war.
