AUTUMN 2016 Ares Partners The She Nationality is one of the 56 Chinese minorities who has a large number of population and inhabit in the southeast mountain area of China. With the rapid development of Chinese beautiful villages, including She Nationality, the company that I worked for began to focus on this domain. The replanning and restoration of She village was one of these projects. This project is one kind of regeneration. The reason is because I do believe that all of the architectures have their own lives, so do the village. In this case, the regeneration is not only about extending the lifecycle of local architecture, but also about activating the traditional culture. So that is not a single-dimensional problem, but multi-dimensional.

The first step of regenerating this old village is researching. After that , we found a large number of buildings were dismantled, many structures of these buildings are dangerous. What can not be ignored is that there are also many delicate details are well-preserved, such as pillars and sculptures. These things show many traditions of the She Nationality and are worthy to be protected and combined with our design methods.

She Nationality has a long history and diverse culture in China. They also range widely in Southeast of China. We divided it into two areas, which were material cultural heritage and non-material cultural heritage. Then we recombinated and put these cultures into our project.

Tanhua Palace is the most famous attraction in this old village where used to be a house of the most famous person in there. Now we transferred it into a museum of She Nationality. We kept its origional space and added some new functions in it.

About the hotel buildings, we redesigned the plan of the original buildings and separated each room as a new function. So every guest who lives in this hotel will be excited about the historical ambience of these architectural curios.

We made more efforts to remain the original structure of these old houses and used some new materials to repair the ruins. In this area, we cleared the site and designed a farm place in front of these hotel buildings so that guests in the hotel will have chances to experience local people's life.

About the ruins in the site, we choosed to remain the original structure. For example, the roof of this building was already gone. So we designed this building to be a leisure space for visitors and used some modern materials to refurbished it.
There are many ditches in the site. Local people used these ditches to make the water which came from the mountain flow to their houses. Nowadays, many numbers of ditches are disused. So we decided to reuse these ditches as a landscape for hotel and village. We believed that these ditches would carry back some traditional memories.

ECO-RESORT GUANGXI, CHINA Boutique Hotel FOURTH PERIOD DESIGN Partially Completed ROLE: DESIGN ARCHITECT SUMMER 2016 Ares Partners When I participated in this project, a part of buildings have been already designed and built successfully. However the owner decided to start the fourth period project and I felt so lucky that I had a chance to take part in it and learn knowledge of real building construction. Buildings in the site were old and ruinous. But some of them still remained relatively complete struture. That was a good news for the refurbishment. We respected the original style of these buildings and used some new materials, such as glasses and steels, to open the spaces and reinforce the structures. During the construction period, we still met various problems. That made me accumulated a lot of experience of real construction.
Xingping oldtown is located in the south of Guilin, which is one of the most attractive places in China. This boutique eco-resort nestled within a village at north eastern part of Yangshuo which situated along the dramatic landscape of the Li River. The site consists of nine renovated old farm houses and one new addition which functions as an all-day dining restaurant for hotel guests. Taking on a sensitive approach to the local culture with villagers still living nearby, the resort blends into the original village structure without creating new boundary conditions to the villagers. - 24 -

The ram earth brick buildings on site are unique and we decided to keep these traditional fork houses at our first site visit. The ones which are less characteristic or added on through time without much aesthetic concerns are being demolished in order to create a better spatial relationship and to embrace contemporary living requirements.

Almost all buildings in this site were rebuilt with the original structure. But the only new-built building is the restaurant of the hotel. The structure of this building is steel structure and this kind of structure made this building more light and transparent. The height of this restaurant was lower than any other buildings in this site to show respect for those traditional buildings.
The exterior faรงade of the old houses are being refurbished. In order to let more natural light entering the guest rooms, the windows on the back elevation are being enlarged. A narrow slit window also being added on the side.

The same design principle extends into the interior space of the hotel. The dialogue between people, space, light and landscape is well thought out. The typical layout of the vernacular house here is a three bay structure with a double height volume in the middle bay. The upper level is normally used for storage purpose and access with a ladder. After the renovation, a staircase is added for easy access to the two guest rooms on the upper level. Each typical building consists of four guest rooms with a shared living and hangout space in the center. Bamboo, wood, galvanized steel, concrete finishes and pebble washed stones are main materials being used in interior spaces. GREEN HEART
The project is located in Shanghai, Pudong, at Gaoqing road west. The area is currently empty and the overall surroundings are yet to be developed, except for the Oriental Sport Center which is already built and opened to public.
SHANGHAI, CHINA Residential Estate Design PRELIMINARY DESIGN Ongoing ROLE: DESIGN ARCHITECT Autumn 2015 HYP-ARCH As a large residential estate program, there is a broad range of content from urban design to architectural design, and I was so lucky that I had the opportunity to deeply participate in the first round of urban design phase and was responsible for the detailed design of a certain area. This eco-friendly, energy efficient compound design, with a total of 60,250m2 construction area, sports two scales of architecture. This development is also well integrated into the urban fabric. It is a compound designed according to the optimum family friendly residential needs and offering the inhabitants a luxurious, convenient and exclusive environment.
The project site is located within the planned Qiantan CBD. The development of the area already started with the Oriental Sport Center complex. The rest of the business office, residential and commercial functions will be built around the sport complex zone. Three metro lines (6, 8, 11) will cross at the south east corner of the sport complex. The site is also in a centralized location among the current and the future Shanghai CBDs. The project will be attractive thanks to a wide range of amenities (sport, education, international education and public park) located at walkable distance in the neighbor hood.

The four high rise residential buildings are located next to each site’s corner, and enjoys 360 degres view towards the calm private inner park, the CBD and the Hangpu river. The highest tower on the north reach the height limit, and create a landmark from the commercial plaza below. Then the height of the 3 other towers decrease, but keep a minimum of 51m to integrate the design to the general skyline.

The apartments located on the 1st floor, benefit of a higher ceiling, which allow mid level in the unit’s layout, and create interesting divisions betweeen the different living spaces. The apartment located along the street can thus be raised 1,3m above the sidewalk level. This reduce their exposure to the strollers flow along the street, and ensure the intimacy of the inhabitants. 6 particular units of 1 storey on the south enjoy a private patio which permits to the inhabitants to enjoy sun exposure and natural ventilation without the inconvenience of the street front. Each of the upper apartments enjoy balconies. Loggias on the south can be enclosed and be used as winter garden by their inhabitants. - 45 -

A Variety if Apartments The 4 apartment towers can host a variety of standard configurations, ranging from 40 up to 180 m2 in size. The layout of each units is flexible, and allows different size configurations and style adaptations. The residential park can thus satisfy to different lifestyles, and host a wide category of expats from bachelor to family.
The landscape concept mainly uses building and water boundary; compose a high end green area with characteristic water landscape surrounding and centralized with green island; reserved public space at south and north, not only keep the quality and integrated into CBD surrounding, but also guide the people flow. In the heart of the complex is a landscaped park with divers green typologies from ponds, meadows to dense vegetation. this lush private green area will establish a pleasant micro climate.

Commercial Lower volumes along the west and east streets provides space for retail and cafes. The stone facade imitates the towers cladding in order to preserve the unity to the whole design. The glass frontage of each commercial block is 1. limestone cladding recessed to protect the strollers. The transparent volume that appears in between each block features a series of aluminium louvers, and reflects the park in front.

Individual AC and HRV Systems
Access Control and Security
Each apartment features an individual air conditioning and heat recovery ventilation system (HRV). The users have full control of their indoor climate and air quality, with a minimum of space needed for technical equipment. The VRV air condition system guarantees continuous temperatures throughout the apartment - including bathrooms and kitchen. This is supported by the HRV sytem, which not only provides fresh filtered air into every room, but also distributes the air from the AC system evenly throughout the apartment.
To minimize technical space, the external units of the VRV air condition systems are locate in one space in the north of each tower. This allows the maximum use of the floor height at a high quality without pipes or ducts inside a dropped ceiling. Additionally, the facade can be designed without the need to accommodate small external AC units, and without obstructing the views from the apartments - resulting in a clean, high tech and modern exterior design solution, perfectly integrated into the new CBD.
Structural System
Apartment Layout
The apartment towers are constructed in a column - beam structure with a central core, instead of using a wall based structural system common in residential buildings. This system allows a maximum of flexibility not only for later use, but also during construction, as changes and adjustments are done as interior decoration following market needs and requirements. Also, it will be easy to adjust parts of the structure at any given point of time, individually for each floor or even individually for each apartment unit.
The apartments are well integrated into the structural system. The central AC space to the north of the buildings accommodates the external AC units, freeing the facades. Pipes and installations are hidden in the partially dropped ceilings. The structural system allows for large, flexible rooms and spaces inside the apartments, different from the usual small scale local apartment types. Needs of users can be accommodated easily. - 52 -
C_REFORM FUJIAN, CHINA
The site is located in Chizhou City, Anhui Province, the hometown of one of our members. Like most small and medium-sized cities in China, it is a small city with a core urban area of about 15 square kilometers and a permanent resident population of about 180,000 people in the city center. This city enjoys the most common urban landscape in contemporary China: not spacious streets, full of one-room shops along the street, lack of public space and large public buildings and backward infrastructure.
Community Center Architecture Design National Architecture Competition Design Excellence Award ROLE: LEADING DESIGNER SUMMER 2013 SIT The theme, which is called "C-Reform", means that we hope to reform the city through this project. Reforming the city sounds like a big movement. But in our research, we decided to start with a real tiny little thing. Simply as a community center. Our purpose in this project is making this architecture be a connection to provide more flexible spaces for people who are living around the site. Nowadays there are still a large number of people live in some housing estates which were built in 1970s in China. These housing estates are high density and many public facilities in it are going to be scraped. This phenomenon give us a chance to rethink the form of our design. It must be open enough to be a public building. It also need to be mixed many functions which can be used in people's daily life.

With the increasing waste of natural resources, energy conservation in buildings seems imminent. In order to avoid the same mistakes of excess hardware and a waste of resources, we have proposed to build a matrix of urban cultural life with community as a unit in small and medium-sized cities so as to decompose large cultural buildings with a scale of tens of thousands of square meters in big cities and create the open and efficient integration of unit cultural activities, thus achieving multi-win situation of energy conservation, land saving, promotion of open architecture philosophy and no destruction of the original urban texture.

Dingzhou is located in the middle of China and the site of this project is located in the middle of Dingzhou. Around the site, there are many historical buildings, such as Dingzhou Tower, which is the biggest brick -masonry-constructed tower, and Examination Hall. So the first thing I need to consider about is that the relationship between the site and the circumstances.

"Submerging" is a word I use to describe the form of this project. I hope this building is not just a construction, but still a facility for local people. People can do more things in this area. In this case, the definition of this building will blur. Because it is not only a museum at all, but also a cultural square and a city garden. It is complex. As a museum project, I also redefined it. Not just because it is a new museum building in the city, but because when people visit this museum, they will have different expirence which they will never have from others. I considered about many functions and made the museum space more flexible. That is the reason why I called it The New Museum.

The sunken space is also important for this project. I designed three layers for trees, bicycles and activities separately. This kind of belt scenery is the connection between two sides of the museum. People can do many things, such as running, riding or just sitting for a rest, in this area.

The New Museum of Dingzhou was designed to be applicable for all sizes of exhibits. I set three modular spaces which is small space, middle space and large space seperately. Then I comprised them together to become the new museum. So that the spaces of this museum would be flexible and comfortable for holding several exhibitions. As a public building, when the museum is closed, I hope people can also use the outdoor space of the museum to do some sports or some activities. Maximizing the space usage of the new museum was my main goal in this design project. The facade of this architecture was not as important as the space, it was just a kind of modern style. I used some vertical lines in the curtain system to reduce the whole volumn of the architecture.

PAINTINGS AND PHOTOS N/A Personal Paintings and Photos N/A N/A ROLE: PERSONAL WORK SPRING 2012-AUTUMN 2016 In the end of this portfolio, I would like to show some personal works of my own. About paintings, I started learning it when I was a young boy. From sketch to watercolour, I have learnt several kinds of painting. The passion of painting was one of the important reasons I choosed architectural design to be my major in the university. Here are some paintings which I picked from my recent personal works. Photograph is a another thing I really interested in. When I went abroad or visited some interesting architecture, the only thing I never forget to take with me is my camera. I like to use this equipement to record my life and share some photos to my friends and families.
