VDL Stud

THE VDL STUD

Ever since Wiepke Van de Lageweg, the founder of VDL Stud, presented his first stallion to the breeders, the iconic three letters ‘VDL’ have become a symbol for quality and success. The first stallion Nimmerdor became one of the first stallions to be both successful in both sprots and as a breeding sire, creating a tremendous legacy.

Nowadays Wiepke van de Lageweg and his three sons Wiebe Yde, Janko and Sipko run the VDL Stud as a family business. Everyone in the family runs their part of the business and works with a great staff. The farm has grown to five locations, 40 approved stallions, 120 foals born every year, lots of young horses growing up healthy in almost 1000 acres of the best grass fields to grow out to become great sport horses for the future. The ability to source and breed talented young horses, produce them and connect these equine athletes with the right riders has always been one of the strengths of VDL Stud.

Some of the leading stallions of VDL Stud put their name in the history books forever. Jus de Pomme is the only stallion to win a double Olympic gold medal; the two-time Olympic stallion Chin Chin was imported to Europe and turned into one of the most influential sires of all times. Cardento was found in Holstein and with Peter Eriksson won silver team medals at European championships, WEG and the Olympic Games. Home-bred Bubalu VDL won Olympic team silver as well as team gold at the World Equestrian Games; Zirocco Blue VDL won team gold at the European championships in Aachen. Later on, VDL Glasgow van ‘t Merelsnest competed in many Nations Cups and major championships and VDL Grand Slam is well on his way to become one of world’s best sport stallions. The iconic VDL letters remain dominant in equestrian sport, more than 50 years after they were first put into use.

WEF SPORT HORSE GRADUATES

From one of world’s leading breeding farms in the north of Holland to the winter’s equestrian capital of the world in south Florida; the relationship between VDL Stud and Winter Equestrian Festival has proven to be a successful one. In the nine-year history of the WEF Sport Horse Auction, many VDL horses sold in the auction have risen to the top of the sport. And that’s not only at the highest level of show jumping, but also in the hunter and equitation ring, with professional and amateur riders.

As one of the three sons in the VDL family, Janko van de Lageweg focuses on the US market and the WEF Sport Horse Auction. “In our breeding operation, we aim for the best jumping quality, but we also want our horses to be rideable, honest, and willing. So, we need modern, careful, and fast horses with blood and a good attitude. For the highest level of the sport you also need a lot of scope, for amateur riders you need horses that are forgiving, for the hunter ring you need a pretty horse with a beautiful technique. We try to have all these types of horses in our breeding operation so we can provide what the market needs.”

Looking at the number of VDL bred horses showing all over the world and the accomplishments they have had, from the equitation ring to the Olympic Games and from the hunters to the high amateur jumpers, the VDL Stud has proven to be one of the world’s main producers of quality show jumpers.

Take a look at some of WEF Sport Horse Auction’s graduates in the spotlight.

VDL Jus de Pomme double Gold winner Atlanta Olympic Games. VDL Bubalu Team Silver winner London Olympic Games.

Three major sport horse enthusiasts have set up an exclusive and high-quality online auction platform: Trigon Auctions. With Trigon Auctions they have a common goal to bring breeders and sport closer together by creating a market for breeders for the sale of foals, young sport horses and broodmares.

The VDL Online Breeders Market is a platform where VDL Stud’s clients meet. Our breeders register to sell their foal over the platform and after selection on soundness and correctness the foals are placed on the platform. As a buyer you have the chance to inspect the foals, their pedigree and video’s online and be assured that the foals you love are correct and in good condition. You can place directly an offer that the breeders can accept or reject.

“I liked his canter and technique from day one. He’s probably the best horse I’ve ever ridden. He always gave 110% and you could rely on him even when he was 6 and 7 years old.” -Amanda Flint, trainer and rider for Ted Wachtel who bought him from the first auction under the name Chester VDL.

THANK YOU TO RETIRED GRADUATE

“We bought Chester as a four year old at the 2011 auction having never ridden him. Although we were drawn to his physical qualities, namely his effortless style, after having him in the barn for a short time we learned that his best quality was his character. Even as a young horse, he seemed wise beyond his years and learned quickly. We are immensely proud of what he has accomplished with Paul and feel privileged to have been part of his career.” - Ted Wachtel

MachuPicchu

“Machu was a life changing horse for me. He is very kind, unassuming, and laid back at home but could turn it on when it was time to compete. He was an incredible fighter in the ring, always giving 100%. He brought me to a new level taking me to the World Championships in Tryon 2018, jumping

double clears in the Nations Cups in Dublin, Sopot, Falsterbo, Samorin, and Wellington twice. He went clear in the final round in Barcelona 2019 when we won the Nations Cup Final there. He won a 5 star class in Dublin in 2015 and then won a 1.60m class in Dublin in 2022 which was his last show.

He stayed jumping consistently at the 5 star level for 8 years showing how exceptional he is.

He came through the first VDL auction in Florida and was bought by Ted Wachtel and competed with Amanda Flint until we bought him as a 7 year old. I’m very grateful to his owners- Trish Hurter, Frank and Bonnie Cunniffe, Phyllis and Harry Agnew, Andrea Sinner, and Ira Gumberg. He’s enjoying his well earned retirement now on the hills at Trish Hurter’s farm in Virginia.” - Paul O’Shea IRL

Graduates Spotlight

VDL Karusa Blue

Blue

by Wanda Dodd. Sold in 2023.

“Windara Farms has purchased several horses at the always exciting VDL Auction at Wellington for our show jumping program and we have had many successes.

For 2023, the quite large, but equally big-hearted 8-year-old gelding, Karusa Blue by Zirocco Blue, captured our interest. Janko was especially helpful in allowing us the time to try out several horses, but come auction night, we were delighted to purchase the first offering of the evening, Karusa Blue!

While we feel Karusa Blue is capable of competing at the highest levels and indeed has already won at 1.30 with trainer, Michael Burnett, he seems also content to pilot adult amateur, Wanda Dodd, around the 1.10 classes while he continues his development and training. Currently, this amateur team has set the Masters Class at WEF 2024 as their goal for the year.”

- Mark and Wanda Dodd, Windara Farms

Kyaklahoma VDL

“Kyaklahoma VDL is the most wonderful mare I have ever ridden. She has endless trust, confidence, and willingness to jump anything you put in front of her. She stepped me up to my first 1.20m jumpers with very good results every time we went in the ring. Highlights include being 3rd overall in the Canadian Championship at the prestigious Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and end of year Provincial Champion. Kaia is very cuddly and sweet on the ground but knows her job in the ring and becomes extremely competitive. Kaia is definitely one in a million and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to move up the ranks with.”

VDL Adele de Beauty

“VDL Adele de Beauty Z is the absolute dream. Since the moment we saw her in the presentation she stunned us. After a very exciting evening at the auction, I finally got to call her mine. She has turned out to be the most loving and talented horse. Adele has shown her potential and her talent in all the classes she has jumped. She is always looking to win and make us proud. Adele at only 6 years old has wowed everyone who sees her with her tremendous talent and technique. Apart from her talent, she is the sweetest horse in the barn. We are so happy with her and thankful for the stress free experience we had with the WEF Sport Horse Auction and everyone involved.”

- Ana Holguin, Owner

VDL Manhattan and VDL Newton

“It’s nice to continue owning top VDL horses. Manhattan has really blossomed this year and we are excited to see what his future holds. Newton is one of those horses that is just hard to find. We are very lucky to have him in our barn and can’t wait to see what he becomes. The process VDL offers for trials is really quite easy and they give you plenty of time to really make sure it’s what you are looking for. You go into the auction feeling very confident about what you are bidding on.”

Thea Stinnet, Owner, Heathman Farm

VDL Imar and VDL Ibiza

“The two horses both have quality to be top Grand Prix horses with a mentality that they can be ridden one day by an amateur.”

-Jenny Rankin, Rider

“Both of our VDL horses have the scope, elasticity, and ride ability to succeed at the top levels of our sport. We could not be more proud to have representatives from the VDL Stud on our team.”

-Liz Phillips, Owner

“The 2 horses we have that originated at the WEF Sport Horse Auction show a high standard of the breeding and selection offered for sale.”

- Barry O’Connor, Trainer

Both horses where bought at the auction and produced by Ariel Grange and the Lothlorien Team.

Prospective buyers must register no later than February 29, 2024 at 7pm. Online bidders must register in advance at https://bid.wefsporthorseauction.com/register and be confirmed as a registered bidder prior to the start of the auction. The auctioneer will decide for each horse the minimum bid. The highest bidder shall be the buyer and sign the Acknowledgement of Purchase. This document shall be binding, and only once it is signed, will the next horse enter the ring. In case the successful bidder does not sign the Acknowledgement of Purchase, the auctioneer can decide to bid the horse again. Telephone bidding is also available at the time of the auction. Telephone bidders must have immediate access to either a fax machine or e-mail and scanner capabilities in order to immediately return the Acknowledgement of Purchase. Seller reserves the right to bid or to instruct the auction staff to bid on Seller’s behalf. A Sale summary shall be published immediately following the Auction and any unsold lot shall be designated as such.

Online Bidding: Online bidding is also available for this sale and will be held to the same terms and conditions set forth herein. VDL Horse Auctions BV, WEF Sport Horse Auction, and Wellington International will not be responsible for internet failure pertaining to online bidding availability. Should any internet issues arise, it is suggested that the bidder call Melanie Peterson-Ramey at 561-870-6587 or Janko van de Lageweg at 832-706-3407 immediately. Technical support will also be available on the website.

Bids are made by digitally entering a bid. Each Bidder is expected to bid for itself and is bound by its bid, which is deemed to be unconditional and irrevocable. The Bidder offers for its own account and risk. If a Bidder is mandated by a partnership of buyers or a legal entity, this must be stated to the Auctioneer when registering the Bidder for the Auction. A Bidder is held to its offer until a higher offer is accepted.

The auction organization is never liable for damage as a result of action and/or lack of action by third parties, including the organizer of the auction; delay at using the auction site; dropping out or not being available of the auction site because of other reasons, including not being available of a specific auction. Such delay or falling out can be caused by not proper functioning or being available of internet, or not proper functioning or being available of (computer) devices. Under no circumstances indemnification of indirect or resulting damage can be claimed, such as loss of profit, missed savings and reputation damage. Neither can indemnification be claimed for damage which is the consequence of circumstances beyond the auction organization’s control.

6. BIDDING DISPUTES.

Should any dispute arise between or among two or more bidders, auctioneer shall forthwith adjudicate the dispute, and auctioneer’s decision shall be absolute, final and binding on all parties. Bids tendered after fall of the hammer are not valid grounds for dispute. Bids received by personnel employed by auctioneer have the same stature as bids received by auctioneer in the stand. In case of dispute, at auctioneer’s sole discretion, the bidding shall be reopened for advance bids, and if there be no advance bid, the horse is sold to the person from whom auctioneer recognized the last bid. Advance bidding shall be restricted to the disputing parties, unless the bid is reduced below the level of the recognized bid at commencement of the dispute, in which case bidding is reopened to all. Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any or all bids.

12. SEVERABILITY.

If any provision of these TERMS and CONDITIONS is held to be illegal or invalid, such illegality or invalidity shall not affect the remaining provisions of these TERMS and CONDITIONS, and they shall be continued and enforced as if such illegal or invalid provision had never been inserted herein.

COVID has impacted all industries including our sport. As shows continued in the United States, The Netherlands has been on hold. Normally our young horses would be exhibiting themselves at shows, but with the lack of official shows, they mostly had to gain experience at training shows. Unfortunately these training shows do not count for official results but were built to the same standards as an official show. In the auction catalogue and website the selected horses have been exhibited at various training shows to the level stated on their page.
