COVER
A LETTER FROM THE Executive Director
Dear IHSA members, coaches, parents, sponsors, supporters, and friends,
Warm congratulations to all the riders and teams who have successfully navigated the regular season and competitive post-season, earning the opportunity to compete here at the IHSA National Championship. We are delighted to welcome teams and individuals from across North America gathering at Tryon International Equestrian Center.
Riders, take pride in your achievements, and I urge you to seize this chance to connect with fellow competitors from different teams. You'll discover a shared passion for horses and equestrian sports and a collective commitment to good sportsmanship.
The IHSA and this event owe their success to the dedicated army of volunteers who work tirelessly year-round to ensure seamless execution. Our volunteer board of directors demonstrates unwavering dedication to the IHSA's mission, and we are profoundly grateful for their considerable time and expertise.
I extend a heartfelt thank you to all the schools and individuals providing horses for Nationals. Competition wouldn't be possible without their invaluable contributions. Members, please take a moment to express gratitude to our horse providers. Remember to acknowledge the horse you ride with a pat, recognizing that its provider is cheering for its performance, regardless of team affiliations.
We extend our gratitude to our sponsors, particularly those who have recently joined us, like Dover Saddlery, Horseware Ireland and those returning who have shown exceptional support, notably Back on Track and CWD. We are thrilled to expand our relationships with our friends at The Chronicle of the Horse and Equine Network and thank them for their generosity.
Many thanks to our equestrian community and the governing bodies that champion our mission to provide equestrian opportunities to college students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels – USHJA, NRHA, AQHA, APHA and NSBA.
Join us in honoring two remarkable individuals who have played and continue to play vital roles within the IHSA – Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Julie Mann and Becky Huddleston.
Saturday afternoon, join us in honoring the 2024 class of IHSA Hall of Fame inductees. These individuals and horses represent our organization's ideals and have given back to the IHSA and the industry.
Also, we are excited to share our IHSA Parade of Teams with a greater audience on Saturday before the Tryon International Saturday Night Lights Grand Prix.
Make sure to explore all the vendors and sponsors who steadfastly support the IHSA throughout the year.
I wish everyone the best of luck this weekend and hope you thoroughly enjoy this time together!
Sincerely,
Peter Cashman IHSA Executive Director

History of the
INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION
The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association was established in 1967 by Robert “Bob” Cacchione while he was an 18-year-old sophomore attending Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. Cacchione developed the prototype competition program with the help of his professor and renowned horseman, Jack Fritz.
Some of the most notable riders in show jumping and the Western disciplines competed in the IHSA during their college years. Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden competed for Southern Seminary and won the Cacchione Cup in 1984. Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde won the Cacchione Cup in 1986 while he attended Tufts University.
Launched with just two colleges competing in hunter seat equitation, the IHSA was praised for its competition format and quickly caught on. In 1979 the Western divisions premiered at the IHSA National Championship Horse Show (Nationals). In 1999 IHSA Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization.
The early shows were judged by great horsemen, like Frank Chapot and Michael Page. Originally, Nationals were held at various college facilities but are now held at major equestrian competition venues.

About the
INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOWS ASSOCIATION
The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) welcomes members of all genders and riding levels and offers individual and team competition in hunter seat equitation, Western horsemanship, ranch riding and reining at more than 400 member colleges and universities.
Founded in 1967, it is the oldest and largest intercollegiate equestrian organization with 10,000 members in 47 states and Canada.
IHSA college and university team participation is represented through a variety of programs including varsity athletics, academic departments and club sports.
Membership in IHSA means that college students can compete at horse shows regardless of their experience or financial status. Students compete in beginner through advanced divisions with suitable, provided horses, eliminating the expense of horse ownership and much of the related costs of the sport. Through the Intercollegiate Equestrian Foundation (IEF), IHSA members are eligible for multiple need and merit-based scholarships.
Members compete to qualify for IHSA Regional Finals. The top riders and teams at Regionals advance to the IHSA Zone Finals (hunter seat) or Western Semi-Finals, Presented by NRHA. The top competitors and teams at Zone Finals and Semi-Finals qualify for the annual IHSA National Championship.
Dover Saddlery Open Equitation-level riders are eligible to compete for the USHJA Hunter Seat High Point Rider, Presenting the Cacchione Cup. Western riders qualify to compete for the Back on Track Western High Point Rider title. Qualified teams compete for the Hunter Seat Team and Horse & Rider Western Team Championship honors.
IHSA offers valuable hands-on experience and professional development in multiple facets of the equine industry. Many IHSA teams participate in service projects, giving back to their communities. Through the IHSA, students enhance their college experience and develop the tools that help to build successful careers.

IHSA Senior Athletic Academic Achievement Award Essay Winner
CAMRYN LUBNER, University of South Carolina
I came to school in the Fall of 2020, during the height of Covid. I chose a college over 600 miles away, not once ever touring the school and knowing not a single soul. Little did I know, joining the IHSA team would be the best decision of my college career. The days at the barn provided the only sense of normalcy in freshman year of online classes and masks.
In the blink of an eye, I am now somehow a nostalgic senior reminiscing on the last four years. I am incredibly grateful for everything this team has given me and can only hope to capture a fraction of how my teammates, horses, and coaches have impacted me here.
From my coaches, Angela and Teresa MacFawn, I have learned selflessness. In an industry that can be cutthroat, they graciously give us their time and expertise. Time and time again, they do everything in their power to accommodate requests for an extra lesson, even when it means 7 a.m. on a Friday morning. Through my worst rides, they are there to support me, pick me back up, and remind me of the rider I am. Through my highest highs, they celebrate with me while challenging me to be even better. From my team, I have learned sacrifice and humility. As a team who does not receive school funding, we have given up hours of our time and energy to make this possible, from fundraising efforts to barn chores. At shows, you can find us shining each other's boots and borrowing show jackets. We can be heard cheering for our teammates from a mile away, just as loud whether we won every class of the day or barely got on the scorecard. The subjective nature of this sport can be a tough pill to swallow, but there’s nothing like the love of a team around you to experience it with. School and social obligations aside, our Sunday nights are spent following the trailer home after a weekend away. Last year, our team qualified for Nationals for the first time in school history, an experience I am forever honored to be a part of.
From our horses, I have learned empathy and gratitude on a level I never knew possible. Without them, we would not be. Our horses may sometimes be off-sized, uncomfortable, and seldom have a lead change, but we learn immeasurable skills from each of their quirks. In their old age, they owe us nothing. Yet, their hearts of gold allow us the invaluable experiences to chip, miss, and be forgiven time and time again. We can always be found rooting for their success at shows, even when the rider is from a rival school. When our beloved team horse, Peanut, almost lost his eye, our team and community rallied together to care for him and support the exorbitant vet bills incurred to keep the eye.
I am forever grateful for the person and equestrian that IHSA has molded me into. As I go on to graduate in just a short month and enter the “real world,” I may be leaving IHSA behind, but it will never leave me. The team, the horses, and the lessons I’ve learned have me nostalgic for days that aren’t over yet.

IHSA HONORS Lifetime Achievement Award JULIE MANN & BECKY HUDDLESTON WITH THE Lifetime Achievement Award
The IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award is a testament to the remarkable contributions made by Julie Mann and Becky Huddleston, recognizing their unwavering commitment to the IHSA and their outstanding work in the improvement and functionality of the organization's show management software. It is only the second time in IHSA history that two people have earned the honor in the same year. The husband-and-wife duo of Claiborne and Tom Bishop received the award together in 1996. Huddleston expressed her astonishment at receiving the award. "I was totally shocked," she said. "I was so excited for Julie, but I was not expecting that."
Huddleston joined Mann on the website committee working on the IHSA's show management software in 2013. It was her first year as a board member and she was unsure of what committee she should dedicate her time to. She saw that Mann was frustrated with the software. "I didn't know what I was doing, but I thought, I'm going to help her," Huddleston said. "And we've become really good friends."
Together, they've dedicated 11 years to enhancing the IHSA show management platform's functionality and user-friendliness. "We went from having a bland, unfriendly site that didn't do much and we created a horse show program that's much more usable and user-friendly," Huddleston said.
The website is now integral in tracking points for IHSA members and teams, providing transparency and streamlining administrative tasks. "It makes everything flow better for us, especially for the admin part of the association," Huddleston added.
When asked about her feelings regarding the award, Mann said, "I don't feel like I've been on the board long enough to be a Lifetime Achievement recipient,
Becky Huddleston
but I appreciate their recognition of what Becky and I have done with the website."
Born in Scotland while her father was in the military, the Huddlestons call Baxter, Tennessee, home. She grew up riding backyard ponies on the family pig farm. She was recruited to the IHSA team when she attended Tennessee Tech, starting in Walk-Trot and progressing to Open and Reining. During her senior year, she also competed in hunter seat and jumping.
When the Tennessee Tech coach resigned, Huddleston coached as a student and then was asked to stay on after graduation. She took a job in electrical contracting but decided the horse world was where she belonged. In 2001, she built a barn and began life as a professional, teaching and training and all the while, she coached the Tennessee Tech team. Huddleston is also a judge, holding multiple cards with various associations. Huddleston started her journey with IHSA as a volunteer coach and progressed to become a regional president, board member and now secretary serving on the executive committee.
Mann was born in Chicago, but the family moved to Muscatine, Iowa. A lifelong rider who now competes in dressage, Mann spent a few years in the Boston area, then returned to Muscatine. She started coaching the Augustana College IHSA Team in 2006.
Mann loves witnessing the personal growth of her students and hearing from them after they graduate. When they move on, she said, "It's like my own child is graduating."
She quickly became involved in governance and became a regional president. She was "volunteered" to work on the website committee. Amazingly, neither Mann nor Huddleston had prior experience in software development.
Both Mann and Huddleston have actively contributed to the betterment of the IHSA,
helping members throughout North America. "The IHSA allowed me to pursue my passion and give back to the equestrian community," Mann said. Their dedication, hard work and love for equestrian sports have left an indelible mark on the IHSA and the students it serves.

Hall of Fame
The IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association) established its Hall of Fame in 2020 to celebrate the remarkable contributions of individuals and horses to the organization. This initiative was a significant milestone in recognizing the dedication and achievements within the equestrian community. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the postponement of the Hall of Fame class in 2022.
The IHSA remains committed to honoring excellence within its ranks. As a result, this year, the IHSA is resuming its Hall of Fame inductions with great anticipation. The second class of inductees comprises seven outstanding individuals and two remarkable horses, all of whom have left an indelible mark on the IHSA through their contributions and service.
Nominations into the IHSA Hall of Fame are carefully considered, with candidates falling into one of four distinguished categories: Founders, Coaches, Riders, or Horses. Each inductee is recognized for their years of dedicated service, impact on the sport, and embodiment of the values upheld by the IHSA.

For over 22 years, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) has witnessed the power of team mentality. Instructors who turn lesson students/clients into equestrian team members at the middle and high school levels not only see improved riding abilities, but also more barn camaraderie, growth in responsibility, added revenue streams, and increased enthusiasm for collegiate riding. Youth athletes competing on draw-based IEA teams participate in equestrian sport at an affordable cost while learning important horsemanship, team-building and life skills. Regardless of ability level, every team member can earn points and play an important role in the success of their IEA Team.
IEA offers educational opportunities to riders in grades 4-12 who ride Dressage, Hunt Seat and Western using the same unique draw-based team competition format as IHSA. Each season, more than 13,000 youth riders participate in nearly 900 IEA shows across the US. During the 2023-24 season, IEA awarded more than $1.1 million in cash and collegiate scholarships to High School students. Why not give your collegiate team a boost by
adding an IEA component? Membership for the 2024-2025 season will open this summer. Join today!
