Countryside

The gently meandering River Stour forms the backbone of this beautiful area; it is one of many picturesque countryside sites and open spaces to explore.

Breathe in the scent of bluebells in an ancient woodland, photograph the vibrant colours of traditional heathland or enjoy sweeping panoramas from Iron Age hill forts over patchwork fields. Take in the sea air and stunning views over the coast from the Christchurch coastal path or get the binoculars to the ready at Stanpit Marsh, where an unusual combination of habitats provides a home for hundreds of bird species. This beautiful, unspoiled area is rich in wildlife; much of it enjoys protected status with a multitude of sites of special scientific interest, nature reserves and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Stanpit Marsh Š JM

See if you can spot the rare Dartford Warbler, Natterjack Toad or the endangered Sand Lizard, a Smooth Snake or even the shy otter as you explore. Learn more about wildlife and conservation at a special event or at one of our award-winning visitor/information centres at Stanpit or Steamer Point or at our outstanding country parks at Moors Valley and Avon Heath.

www.visit-dorset.com 2

Discover peace and tranquility and wonderful flora and fauna on a cycle ride or a walk, there are miles of footpaths and bridleways, plus numerous circular and long distance routes to explore. The countryside is accessible to all with special wheelchair friendly routes and pathways at Moors Valley Country Park and on the Kingston Lacy Estate near Wimborne Minster. Make it a holiday to remember by trying something new, perhaps orienteering, bushcraft or even segwaying, all fantastic and fun ways of getting out in the great outdoors!

Coast

Christchurch’s spectacular location at the edge of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and on the shores of its own natural harbour makes it the perfect location to relax and enjoy stunning views across the four miles of coastline and indulge in a host of water activities.

5 www.visit-dorset.com

Each of the six beaches has its own individuality, some cater for families and people with disabilities and others are less commercial and welcome dogs. Highcliffe Beach, Avon Beach and Friar’s Cliff Beach have all been awarded Quality Coast Awards and the water quality is checked regularly throughout the season. There’s always activity on the water as local sailing clubs regularly host regattas and windsurfers travel from all over the country to enjoy the wave sailing at Avon Beach.

Mudeford Sandbank, Christchurch

Christchurch Harbour © JM

Picturesque Mudeford Quay with its lobster pots and fishing boats is the centre of the local fishing industry and a honey pot for water-based activities. You can learn to sail, windsurf, kayak and standup-paddleboard and if you are bringing your own boat or watercraft, there are public slipways with good parking too.

www.visit-dorset.com 6

Enjoy a wet hair day and take a RIB blast to the Isle of Wight, Brownsea Island or Old Harry Rocks or why not hop on a ferry from Mudeford Quay to Mudeford Sandbank with its pretty beach huts. You can walk along Hengistbury Head and catch the Noddy train back, it’s great fun for all the family. Crabbing from the quayside is great fun for the children whatever the weather and it’s free… all you need is a line, bucket and bait!

A ferry service also runs from Christchurch Quay across the harbour to Mudeford Sandbank and you can learn about the flora and fauna and see the multitude of swans for which Christchurch is renowned. Enjoy the peaceful water of the River Stour and hire a motor boat from Christchurch Quay.

The Ebb And Flow of History

Magnificent churches, grand buildings and scenic mills, the historic borough of Christchurch and the heritage market towns of Wimborne Minster, Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury share many links.

Chain Library, Wimborne Minster © SC

Christchurch’s historic Priory Quarter is in the heart of the town centre, dominated by the stunning Priory Church with its excellent architecture ranging from Norman through to Renaissance. The gracious Minster Church of St Cuthburga in Wimborne Minster also dates from the Norman period; its unusual artifacts include an Astronomical Clock and a rare Chained Library dating from 1686. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of both of these timeless buildings, and each hosts a regular programme of concerts and events. The grandeur continues at Kingston Lacy (NT) with the splendour of the Spanish Room, lavishly gilded in leather and a renowned art collection. The superb cliff-top mansion of Highcliffe Castle, built between 1831 and 1835, is described as “the most important remaining example of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture”. Both of these great houses have wide ranging events and exhibitions.

Originally a motte and bailey construction, the ruins of Christchurch Castle Keep now offer good views over the town. There are glorious vistas from Park Walk in Shaftesbury where the ruins of the abbey built by King Alfred in 888AD are bought vividly to life in Shaftesbury Abbey Museum. Enjoy the area’s history throughout the ages at the Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne Minster, from our rich archeological landscape and treasures to absorbing photographs of village life over the last century. The Red House Museum in the heart of Christchurch, was originally the local workhouse and is fascinating to visit.

11 www.visit-dorset.com

Follow the meandering River Stour upstream and you come across a series of mills, some now converted to art and craft centres including Place Mill, alongside picturesque Christchurch Quay, and Walford Mill in an idyllic setting on the pretty River Allen in Wimborne Minster. View the mill machinery at White Mill (NT), located alongside Dorset’s oldest bridge or see flour still being produced at Sturminster Newton Mill on one of their special milling days.

Glorious Gardens

Award-winning gardens abound in Christchurch and Rural Dorset. Wimborne Minster was Britain in Bloom Small Town winner in 2012 and the parks and gardens in Christchurch, with their stunning borders, win regular accolades in the South and South East in Bloom competition.

The area has a rich horticultural history with some excellent independent nurseries and garden centres to discover, many specialising in particular species including ornamental grasses, fuchsias, camellias, heathers, roses and azaleas. The area also has many larger garden centres, including Stewarts, Haskins, Golden Acres and Plowmans, offering a full range of gardenware, plants and accessories. Explore some of our hidden gems, gorgeous gardens that open less frequently and offer tranquil and relaxing havens. Discover the lovely walled gardens of Cranborne Manor or nearby Edmondsham House or Farrs Lodge, the unusual gardens and studio of botanic artist Lys de Bray.

www.visit-dorset.com 14

Knoll’s nationally acclaimed, secluded four acre garden is a peaceful haven featuring spectacular, naturalistic modern planting and unusual trees and shrubs. It is the perfect showcase for their stunning ornamental grasses, winners of ten consecutive Chelsea Gold Medals. The recently renovated kitchen gardens at Kingston Lacy have been attracting much attention, not least for their popular inhabitants, families of rare breed pigs. The allotments are a nice counterfoil to the formal gardens and parkland that surround the house itself, pay a visit in February to see the grounds carpeted in snowdrops, a magical sight.

Enjoy the fabulous gardens of some of our attractions including Highcliffe Castle, Wimborne Model Town and the Red House and Priest’s House Museums. The latter sits on an old walled, burgage plot which extends 100 metres down to the clear waters of the River Allen. Pick up a copy of the ‘Specialist Nurseries and Hidden Gardens of East Dorset’ leaflet or a copy of the Dorset Yellow Open Gardens booklet at Wimborne or Christchurch Information Centres.

If you prefer still water there are numerous lakes to discover, further information can be found on our website. Try sea fishing for bass and mullet in Christchurch Harbour during the summer or beachcasting from nearby Mudeford or Hengistbury Head all year round. If you fancy a day out at sea there are several fully licensed operators providing trips. There are a variety of fun ways to take to the water! Try paddle boarding, body boarding, windsurfing or canoeing, or perhaps an exhilarating rib ride! Bring your own boat and use one of the public slipways or go kayaking. The picturesque countryside offers a huge variety of circular walks, long distance trails and on and off-road cycle routes. If you prefer not to go under your own steam, explore with the assistance of a four-legged friend and enjoy a gentle hack, there are a selection of riding stables catering for all abilities. Golfers have a fantastic choice of high quality, varied pay and play courses to challenge them, or perhaps try your hand at orienteering or bushcraft skills. If high adrenalin activity is more you, head for the treetops on the Go Ape High Wire Adventure course at Moors Valley Country Park.

adventure wonderland

Animals are always a firm favourite with the children and you can get to meet some giants of the equine world at the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park. As well as the shire horses and other gentle giants there are donkeys, miniature ponies, alpacas, snow dogs, pigs, rabbits and many more furry friends to meet. As well as the animals there are wagon and tractor/trailer rides and play areas to explore. The children themselves will feel like giants at Wimborne Model Town. Your own kingdom, a faithful 1/10th scale replica of Wimborne Minster, is spread out before you as you search for clues and answers to one of the popular quizzes. There are hundreds of activities throughout the school holidays, arts and crafts at our museums, sports activities at our leisure centres and lots of nature and wildlife events at our country parks and sites, something to make everyone’s holiday special.
