Welcome to all our readers old and new! Our distribution is almost covering most of Highcliffe now I’m pleased to say. If this is the first time you have come across our magazine, let me tell you what we’re all about. Whilst our advertisers fund the magazine, we try to pass on as much local information as possible. Mr Selfridge in Highcliffe By Jenny Wigman When ‘Mr Selfridge’ came to our television screens in January little did I realise how Christchurch could in fact be linked with him. Harry Selfridge was an American born in Wisconsin on 11 January 1856. He was brought up by his mother, his father did not return to them after the Civil War in 1865 and his two brothers died around this time also. With this hard start in life it didn’t deter him and he became quite the young entrepreneur. At the age of 20 he was taken on by a very successful store in Chicago one of the partners being Marshall Field. Marshall Field was a pioneer of department store shopping, someone who influenced him greatly. On a trip to London in 1906 he discovered that London’s shopping experience was sorely lacking and decided to open his own department store, ‘Selfridges’. On 15 March 1909 Selfridges opened to the public. His ideal was to embrace everyone from all walks of life so all could enjoy this new shopping experience. Mr Selfridge was very keen on mixing theatre with shopping and made the department store a destination. In 1916 he decided to have a residence away from the hustle and bustle of London and rented a property in Dorset, this property was Highcliffe Castle. Sharing his time between London and
Highcliffe he rented the property until 1922, the magnificence of Highcliffe Castle obviously appealing to Mr Selfridge’s showman persona. In 1919 Selfridge commissioned the architect Philip Tilden to design his very own castle. He had purchased land at Hengistbury Head; the plan was so vast it was due to cost a fortune. Philip Tilden set to work and some of these beautiful drawings can be found online at the Royal Institute of British Architects picture library http://www.ribapix.com. The plan involved four miles or ramparts with towers, and both a small and large castle. The large castle was to include a Gothic hall, a 300-ft tower, a theatre, a Hall of Mirrors copied from Versailles, a winter garden, a covered lake, long corridors and galleries for pictures, tapestries and other objet d’art, and at least 250 suites of rooms for guests. Unfortunately when his wife died in 1918 his spending became reckless, also in 1929 the Great Depression began. In 1930 he sold the land at Hengistbury Head to Bournemouth Borough Council with a covenant advising that the land was never to be built on. This may have been unfortunate for him as his dream castle was never built but indeed fortunate for us as the land remains unspoilt for us to enjoy. In 1939, at the age of 83, in debt and more or less penniless he was made to retire from Selfridges. After this he led a more simple life and died in 1947 at the age of 91 in Putney. As his wife, Rosalie, was buried in St. Marks Churchyard in Highcliffe, so he too was buried beside her in a very simple grave, his life turning full circle from a humble beginning to a humble ending. HOW HEALTHY IS THE LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET? 2012 Locally we saw a modest overall rise in transactions with the mid and higher end demand often underpinned by out of area ‘family’ buyers frequently with schooling considerations and second home purchasers primarily from London and the South East. Our Knightsbridge office having played an important role for us in relation to the latter group. First time buyers remained thin on the ground with high deposit requirements and lack of financial options dampening appetite. A number of properties, including small new build developments that we felt would appeal to first time buyers, were ultimately bought by investors seeking to ‘park’ their money in bricks and mortar and achieve yields of 4½% or more, plus potential capital appreciation, rather than historically low interest on savings accounts. As a result of our increased sales to investors and an ever-increasing volume of rental/tenant enquiries we set up Richard Godsell Lettings department headed by Claire Goddard to provide both full management and tenant find services to both existing and new clients. 2013 The landscape in the first quarter has seen some changes with a significant increase in first time buyer demand, stimulated by the Government Funding for Lending Scheme. Our firm’s own independent mortgage advisor, James Youlten, confirms that he is now able to source a far wider range of competitive finance options for first time buyers, those trading up and investors alike than was the case last year and new players seem to be continuing to enter the market. Elsewhere, whilst the flat/apartment market remains challenging, family homes and retirement bungalows continue to attract strong demand and for those properties whose pricing is consistent with the market conditions a buyer can normally be found within a reasonable period of time. That said challenges remain in areas marginally above the Stamp Duty threshold, particularly at the £250K and £500K levels; whilst at the upper end of the spectrum there remains a psychological resistance to breaking through the £1m barrier unless there are exceptional attributes. HOLMHURST
T
he Holmhurst estate stretched from Hinton Wood Avenue in the west to Cranemoor Chapel in the east. The northern boundary may be roughly estimated as Pinewod Road and the southern boundary as Braemar Drive. The main entrance was from Hinton Wood Avenue where the small red-bricked Lodge, which was the gardener’s home, stood until late last century. The original drive to the house swept to the north of the Lakewood pond through thickets of rhododendrons. The house was built in the early Victorian style and had a separate bell tower which housed a clock. There was a large, imposing iron-studded front door. The entrance hall was dominated by a beautiful wooden staircase. Each rung of the banisters was carved with rabbits and squirrels. The butler’s and chauffeur’s houses are still standing in Chewton Common Road but Holmhurst itself was demolished about 1960. The earliest known resident of Holmhurst was Sir John Thursby, a very popular character in the village. He was elected a churchwarden of St. Mark’s Church and re-elected sometime later in spite of his frequent absences from the district. He gave the church choir annual supper parties which appeared to have been hilarious. The earliest reference to Holmhurst was the announcement of the wedding of Sir John’s daughter:- “October 13th 1888 - A marriage is arranged and will take place between Mr Willoughby Aston Littledale of Bolton Hall and Miss Violet Thursby of Ormerod House, Burnley, Lancs. And Holmhurst, near Christchurch, Hants”. Sir John was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and shooting. At Holmhurst he kept a pack of harriers of fifteen couples. The horn was carried by his son, George, who was reputedly an excellent rider. The parties and dances were eagerly anticipated by all the young gentry. Newspaper
records report that the festivities often continued until 3 o’clock in the morning and that the tables were laid with gold plate. The last residents were Mr and Mrs Pike, Mr Pike owned a company which mined china clay at West Creech in Dorset. The famous Blue Pool was part of his mining operations. When Mr Pike died, Mrs Pike became a recluse. She believed in transmigration and thought the soul of her late husband had entered a rabbit. She would allow no rabbits to be killed on the estate and paid local children half a crown for every rabbit they brought to her. The gardeners were encouraged to grow food for the rabbits; consequently the whole area was swarming with rabbits of different colours. Some of their offspring can still be seen at twilight in the grounds of the junior school – sometimes as many as thirty or forty grazing quietly between the trees. Mrs Pike built two-storey hutches for the rabbits, enabling poachers to put a hand in the hutch and quickly grab a rabbit. During the Second World War the house was used by the Fire Service and later by the Ministry of Defence as a staff club for the De Havilland workers from Christchurch Airfield and was run by the Holiday Fellowship. At that time the grounds of the house were very overgrown and the wildlife abounded. Rabbits, of course, adders and badgers were seen in great numbers. The officers spent their evenings watching the badgers at play outside their sets which were at the present site of the junction of Holmhurst Avenue and Hinton Wood Avenue.

Somerford kids go bananas It was icky, sticky fun for all at Somerford School on Friday 8th March. Fairtrade bananas dunked in a Fairtrade chocolate fountain - such a sweet introduction to the serious issues behind the Fairtrade mark. In all, 180 children got a chance to taste Fairtrade food from around the world – bananas from the Caribbean, grapes from South Africa and chocolate from Ghana. They learned that buying products with the Fairtrade mark guarantees a fair price for the producer and gives money towards health and education in these impoverished communities. Local Fairtrade Vice-Chair, Pauline Iveson said, “Today has been a great success. The children were all so enthusiastic and eager to learn about the countries and their Fairtrade products. And of course the Fairtrade chocolate fountain went down a treat. There were some happy, sticky smiles round that.”

CHAMBER – A CHAMPION OF THE BOROUGH
I
was asked recently what the Chamber of Trade does for the town as a whole. Chambers of Trade are organisations set up by businesses to speak up for and to lobby on their behalf. Chambers work Julie on initiatives that support businesses and promote their localities to the outside world. Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce is not a large organisation and does not have a great deal of money. Often it kick starts and supports initiatives until they run on their own. So, how does it help businesses and the town as a whole? Here are examples of its work. The town’s CCTV scheme was set up as a joint initiative between the Chamber, Council and Police; the Christchurch Food Festival was initiated by the Chamber and run by businesses; the Christmas Festival began as a Chamber initiative for a late night shopping event; the Chamber runs the Shoplink Radio Scheme, an offshoot of the CCTV scheme, to help prevent business crime; the Parking Refund Scheme, where businesses offer to refund 1 hour’s parking charge for a set spend, is Chamber run. The Chamber holds business events and produces publications, such as the Christchurch Shopping and Services Guide and Christchurch Business Guide to promote business. Recent lobbying has included the £1 for 2 hours parking campaign and support for the Totally Locally initiative. Without a successful business base, towns become run down. Shops and industrial units lie empty, jobs disappear, property prices drop. So a healthy local economy is vital to the wellbeing of a town and its residents. A pro-active Chamber of Trade is an essential part of this. Christchurch works best when it works together. The Food Festival is testament to that fact and local Councils and Chambers should work in partnership to create conditions in which businesses can thrive. www.xchtrade.co.uk

ue to some strange collision between the moon, the Gregorian calendar and the number of rabbits it takes to change a light bulb, Easter is irritatingly early this year. Whereas we can usually enjoy a week or Rachel two of holiday, pump our kids full of chocolate and lovingly send them off into the care of apprehensive teachers, this year we’re stuck with them. Two whole weeks of choccy-hyper ‘I’m bored’-ness.
If you’re fed up of cowering in the corner with your hands over your head, you could always take the little darlings to the local library. I recently took a peek in Christchurch branch, which is nearing the end of a full refurbishment and extension. It is with some relief that I can finally go in there without needing a disguise due to a certain ‘incident’ which occurred when my kids were quite small. At the time I also owned a new puppy. Not knowing quite how to deal with the barking, the biting and the nasty deposits on the floor (and that was just the kids) I trotted along to the library and borrowed two books. One was called ‘How to Tame your Toddler’ and the other was a book on dog training. It was with some embarrassment that I returned the remains of the books two weeks later; the Toddler Taming book having been eaten by the puppy, and the dog training book having been scribbled in by the toddler (much to the amusement of the librarians and the detriment of my wallet). Anyway, the library now looks all fresh and lovely, and they usually put on free events for the kids during the holidays. (Make sure you check out the lovely ceiling skylights if you go in). Alternatively you could always leave the kids at home with an unsuspecting baby sitter and go to the library for some peace of your own!

Can You Dig It? Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d
recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. By Lee Bestall
Tip: You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house!

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. 2. Put the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Leave until melted and smooth. 3. Remove from the heat. Add the sugar and stir until well incorporated. Add the flour and stir until well incorporated. Finally, stir in the eggs and mix until thick and smooth. 4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until flaky on the top but still soft in the centre. Be careful not to overcook otherwise the edges will become hard and crunchy. Leave to cool completely before dusting with icing sugar, to decorate. New Forest Children’s Choir In 2008, the New Forest Children’s Choir was formed by former Principal of the Royal Ballet Training School, Alison Russell Hayward. Under her leadership, the choir- now numbering more than forty children aged from 4 – 15 years- rose to dizzy heights, exceeding Alison’s own expectations. Their meteoric rise to national status culminated in their amazing win as BBC Children’s Choir of the Year in 2010. The choir is based at The Regent Centre, Christchurch where weekly Wednesday rehearsals concentrate on technique; building repertoire, and creating lifetime opportunities to all local children. Since their win in 2010 the choir has continued to build on its formidable reputation- competing successfully at the Llangollen Music Festival. Their local, regional and national contributions are always sell out events. Two opportunities have arisen since the formation of the Training choir in 2011 and the Chamber choir in 2012. Alison is, once again, giving the children of Dorset and Hampshire the opportunity to take part in the feeder Training choir. Entry is by a simple audition (but the children don’t know they’re being auditioned) and are given additional opportunities to receive high quality 1-1 tuition for a nominal sum. The latest audition dates are 27th March 17th April and 24th April. Parents are asked to contact Alison via the choir website newforestchildrenschoir.co.uk The Chamber choir is also seeking to extend its membership. Older children; young adults and adults are welcome to join a rehearsal and to audition after this. Again, please contact via the website to register your interest. In addition to their regular concerts, the choirs intend to visit New York in the spring of 2014 as they have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall.
