Welcome.... I do love this time of year and it’s finally starting to feel like Spring has sprung. The sunshine is making more of a welcome appearance and the days are slowly but surely getting longer, making for longer evenings. One of my favourite things to do at this time of year is go for a sundown walk, and what better place to do this than along the stunning stretch of coastline in Southbourne. On a sunny day the views of the bay are spectacular and watching the sunset over the Purbecks is truly amazing. I’m sure you have all witnessed this numerous times but it’s one of those things that never fails to amaze me. As the sun gets warmer we need to start thinking about protection and Bill from the Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club has some sound advise on page 19. April 21st will mark our Queen’s 90th birthday. Queen Elizabeth II will become the first reigning British monarch to reach the age of 90. There will be celebrations taking place all over the UK and in many other parts of the world to commemorate this landmark birthday. We hope that she will have a wonderful time. If you’d like to get involved in the celebrations here, Southbourne Library are hosting a Queen’s Tea Party on the big day from 2-4pm. It’s free to attend but don’t forget to wear your hat fit for a queen! Until next month,
Cheryl

Local History by Hattie Miles walkingtalks.wordpress.com
Pokesdown and Southbourne Ex-Servicemen’s Club Walk up Stamford Road and you will find an old, red brick building where the Union Flag flies day and night. This is the Pokesdown and Southbourne Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
Originally built in 1922 by the Club’s first members - soldiers and sailors who had returned from action in World War One - it has been a refuge and social club for former servicemen of all ranks ever since. There were about twenty-five members back then - men who had seen action on the Western Front, in Mesopotamia, in Gallipoli and other far away places. Not only had they experienced horrors, hardship and loss, they also had memories of great comradeship and friendships formed in the most difficult of circumstances. For them, though coming home was marvellous, dealing with the lasting effects of war was hard and most felt unable to discuss their feelings with their families. In 1921 the site, on the corner of Fenton Road, was purchased for just £100, and on it this band of resourceful men erected an old Nissan hut where they could meet and talk about their war experiences and rekindle that spirit of camaraderie. The club was named The Pokesdown Branch of the National Association of Discharged Soldiers and Sailors. Just months later, with the help of a few donations they began the construction of the present building. The total cost of the freehold, the furniture, the fixtures and fittings was £613 and 10 shillings - and that even included expenses. The exservicemen rolled up their sleeves and did the work themselves utilising any spare time they had.
(Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George), did the honours. He said that he hoped the club would “always be open for the Hattie fighting men of this country who had saved civilization from disaster”.
Each member had a one-shilling share in the club, and until three years ago, all ex-servicemen who were members were share-holders. Now the club has 1,200 members aged eighteen to over ninety, many of them are not former servicemen and they include family members of servicemen, friends and local residents. Last year it was agreed to ‘modernise’ and give women the right to have full membership - there are already more than 560 lady members. Now all members are shareholders and the club is thriving. Twenty-five years ago, the club created its own military standard, which is carried proudly during ceremonial occasions like the Remembrance Day parade. It was designed by members, and then created by students at Bournemouth Art College. The ethos of the original club was to promote ‘esprit de corps’ and that feeling of pride and loyalty remains.
The club is a really good social centre and has its own skittles team, snooker team, darts teams, golf society and angling section.
The club was officially opened as the Pokesdown and Southbourne Ex-servicemen’s Club on 30th September, 1922. Bournemouth’s MP Lt Col Henry Page Croft, who himself had had a distinguished military career and had been awarded the CMG for chivalry

TUCKTONIA: 4 - THE MAKING OF TUCKTONIA Written by Alexander McKinstry
In 1975, Harry Stiller decided to sell the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park to Grand Metropolitan Hotels Ltd., a national company looking to strengthen its hold on the leisure industry. He regrets the decision to this day. It came about after endless wrangling with the water board, and with Christchurch Borough Council, over plans for ‘Tucktonia’, a model landscape to be laid out at the back of the Stour Road site. Harry did agree, however, to stay on for two years as a consultant in the project, and vividly recalls the challenges involved in making Tucktonia a reality.
flat-bed trailer.’ The model-making contract had been awarded to a Bournemouth company, KLF Ltd., but its director, Peter Kellard, subcontracted the work to 24 model-making firms across the UK. The project posed special challenges, not least because Harry was trying to avoid a static landscape: vehicles were to tootle along the motorway flyover, while Concorde was to take off hourly from Tucktonia Airport. These animated features were powered by a hidden switchboard, 250 kW in capacity, rigged up to ten miles of armoured, medium and low voltage cable installed underground.
The models were to be assembled on four waterlogged acres towards the river, formerly part of the driving range. A condition of planning consent was that this land had to be raised 2 ft. 3 in. as a safeguard against flooding, which meant draining the area, filling it with 18,000 tons of hardcore and 2,500 tons of concrete, and then, to give the landscape a realistic, contoured feel, topping it with 12,500 tons of earth. This work alone cost an estimated £250,000. Water was then channelled back into the site to provide Tucktonia with its undulating river, with the cream of Britain’s heritage, industry and natural beauty to be spread out in miniature either side.
The models also had to withstand all types of British weather, while some – Tower Bridge, for instance, or the Cornish fishing village – had to spend their lives partly immersed in water. These challenges were met by building the models from opepe, a resilient West African wood used in boat-building and in dock construction. Some of the nicest touches at the site came about by accident. The fishing village was built by Colin On, who had difficulty sourcing a suitable material for the village stonework. ‘Then one day, by accident, I spilt some resin on the concrete floor of the workshop … When we came to remove it, it peeled off the surface concrete, forming exactly the pattern we were looking for.’
The models, right down to the pigeons surrounding Nelson’s Column, were built to a 1:24 scale, meaning that St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of the first models to arrive, was 16 ft. high: as Harry recalls, ‘They had to bring it down from Lowestoft on a To advertise please call 01202 477214
The booklets issued to promote Tucktonia as ‘the best of Britain in miniature’ only give some idea of its sheer ambition; indeed, when I asked Harry Stiller if he intended to replicate the scope of the Madurodam model landscape in The Hague, which first inspired him, his reply was ‘I wanted to make it bigger!’ When the first models began arriving in August 1975, it was reported that forty new jobs would be created at the site, sixteen for maintenance purposes alone. The effect of the attraction on other local traders was also favourably anticipated, and certainly Christchurch was the focus of all eyes when Tucktonia opened on 23 May 1976, with Arthur Askey as its miniature MC. BOSCOMBE AND SOUTHBOURNE ROTARY
I am delighted to pen our first column for the Southbourne Eye, which will seek to inform readers about our involvement in the community.
Our Rotary Club has served the local community since 1946 and so we are fast approaching our 70th anniversary! We have a great mix of long serving and relatively new members and of course the club is now dual gender. So, you may be asking what does Rotary do?
We undertake many charitable projects within the community, are involved in assisting a number of schools and run an annual fundraising event with 50% going to Royal Bournemouth Hospital. To give you a couple of recent examples: We supported Harewood College by running mock job interviews for around 60 students and we shall be doing something very similar for Bournemouth Collegiate School. The club provided assistance to Springbourne Family Centre, which operates in the heart of Boscombe providing help and support to young families, and also The Cedar Project, which assists children emerging from domestic abuse.
On Saturday 23 April we will be holding a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Event’ in the Sovereign Centre in Boscome from 10am to give shoppers the opportunity to get their blood pressure checked as a protection against strokes.
This column will keep you informed of our activities and we welcome any interest from readers. Our club meetings are held weekly at lunchtime on a Thursday and we are always happy to attract new members who are interested in working for their community through Rotary projects. If you would like to find out more about Boscombe and Southbourne Rotary please call our Club Secretary, David Shires on 07967 743123 or email: davidshires2@yahoo.co.uk Why not ‘Google’ us or look at our Facebook page? www.facebook.com/BoscombeSouthbourne-Rotary-Club

Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA)
Mother’s day and Easter Bank Holiday helped boost trade last month with a few fresh sunny days Clive that put a joyful spring in our steps and smile on our faces.
Although we still had to wrap up in those bargain coats and jumpers bought in the sales to steer off the chills. Southbourne celebrated massive success in the Bournemouth Tourism Awards with our creative and exciting finalists that were Quarters Bar & Kitchen, James Fowler (Larder House) ‘Bar Personality of the Year’, The Larder House, our very own Business Association (SoSBA) and finally The Cliff House Hotel winning the ‘Small Hotel of the Year’. Never before have so many great local businesses from Southbourne been recognised for the their fantastic offerings and incredible high level of customer service. The quality of our high street is something to be very proud of and even more so the support by you, the good people, who have Southbourne in your hearts and use our shops, bars and restaurants. 80% of trade is generated locally and 20% from tourism, if only the tourists knew what we know, but then again, shhhh…best kept secrets! Something well worth shouting about is our business association Facebook page. Every week you will find great offers and showcases, not just from the shops on the high street but also our members who have businesses operating from home and offices. Domestic Angels is one such business that provide home cleaning, care or shopping, bespoke to your needs. It’s simple to join the Facebook page all you need to have is a Facebook account and then like the page found at www.facebook.com/SouthbourneOnSea. Finally we’d like to show our support AFC Bournemouth who have powered our town into the Premier League this season. We cannot underestimate the effect of having a premier league team in our town and the kind of national attention it brings. The battle for survival is a weekly game of win, lose or draw that mirrors the weekly battle faced by every business. Come on Cherries!

Well now it’s April the obvious subject is going to be sunburn. Seriously?
Bill Well the longest day is June 21st when the sun is at its height and at it’s strongest. This year that means that the sun will be as strong on 13th April as it will be on August Bank Holiday Monday (if it comes out!).
Unlike in August, in April our bodies will be coming out after of a long winter and parts of our bodies might not have been exposed to the sun for six months or more. We do need to get some sunshine, it helps us develop strong bones and lets face it, we feel good. But too much sun will cause sunburn. This is never a good thing; apart from the obvious short term pain there is also a long-term health risk of skin cancer.
I hope by now we all know how to keep ourselves safe in the sun. Phrases like ‘Slip, slap, slop’ should be familiar, but let’s recap: In the heat of the sun, slip on a T-shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some sunscreen. When we talk about sunscreen what do we really mean? Well, we are all familiar with the SPF rating on sun screen. It’s actually quite simple; if the maximum exposure time before buring is 20 minutes then SPF3 would mean that the maximum exposure time would be tripled and increased to an hour. If you are going out for the whole day then SPF30 will allow you to be exposed for 10 hours. What you have to remember of course is that if it’s hot you will perspire, meaning you will need to continually apply the sun screen, the same applies if you swim, and don’t forget the collar and cuffs areas of clothing as the clothes can rub off the sun screen. And finally, a walk along the beach will expose you to reflected sun off the sea as well as direct sunlight. Welcome to sunny Southbourne!

WALKING TALKS by Hattie Miles
It looks like 2016 is going to be a bumper year for Highcliffe and I, for one, am very excited about it. For exactly 100 years ago, American self-made millionaire and shopping magnate Harry Selfridge made the imposing stately pile of Highcliffe Castle his country home. He is even buried in nearby St Mark’s Churchyard alongside his wife and mother.
The hugely popular ITV series Mr Selfridge has drawn attention to the area and not only are fans of the show beating a path to this cliff-top village, but last year Mr Selfridge star Jeremy Piven and his on-screen family filmed scenes for the show’s final season at the castle. It looked glorious as they took tea on the lawn bathed in summer sunshine. It hasn’t taken long for Selfridge’s Highcliffe connections to become an integral part of the local tourist trail. A popular package offers the chance to enjoy a Mr Selfridge style high tea at the castle’s tea-rooms complete with a tour of the castle led by an actor, portraying Harry, describing his time at this lavish coastal retreat (for details visit mrselfridgeexperience.co.uk). I am delighted that I have been invited to tell you more about both Harry and Highcliffe on Walkingtalks from the Cliffhanger Restaurant. These circular guided walks will take you along the stunning coast path and will not only tell you about the Selfridges but will also reveal other well-known people connected to Highcliffe, describe the area’s fascinating geology, the devastating effects of the 1987 hurricane and much more. Morning and afternoon Walkingtalks, from the Cliffhanger Restaurant in Waterford Road, run on the first Tuesday of the month until September. An after-walk light lunch or cream tea is included in the package price of £15. Booking via the Cliffhanger is essential on 01425 278058. Group bookings on alternative days can be arranged. FOREVER HOME CAN YOU GIVE BARNEY A LOVING HOME?
Hi I’m Barney a 10 month old Lurcher X who needs to grow into my legs. I can be a bit of a clown at times but I’m a very good natured boy who gets on well with other dogs. I will need on-going training however as I’m still quite young. I would dearly love a home of my own as I had to leave my last one due to a change in circumstances. If you feel you’re the family for me please contact Waggy Tails Rescue.
For more information on Barney or any of the other animals in our care please contact us on 01202 87500, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk Waggy Tails Rescue is a registered charity based in Dorset, we rescue and rehome dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a new home. We also find homes for other small furries that may be in our care. For more information you can contact us on the number above, visit our website or email us. EACH WEEK WE WILL BE FEATURING A DOG AND A CAT NEEDING A LOVING FOREVER HOME

MEET DAISY THE BLACK CAT Daisy is a black cat in need of a home and has been sadly overlooked.
She is a gentle and affectionate lady in need of a patient new owner with a quiet household. Daisy needs a little time to come out of her shell but she is a friendly cat who enjoys playing with straws and a good chin rub will leave her dribbling with happiness.
Homeless cats are more likely to be black or black and white and more and more black and black-and-white cats are being taken in by Cats Protection’s Ferndown Homing Centre than any other colour.
“The unfortunate thing for these cats is that not only do we have more of them coming in, they are also much harder to find homes for. They often get overlooked by prospective owners who would rather adopt a more unusual colour, like ginger, or tabby cats which are very popular,” says Donna Ward, centre manager.
Black and white cats have just as much love to give and make equally good companions as any other colour cat. “If you are able to adopt a cat please get in touch as we’d love to show you the beautiful black and black and white cats we have that are desperate for a loving home,”says Tanya Knox, senior cat care assistant.
To find out more about adopting a cat like Daisy from CATS PROTECTION’S FERNDOWN HOMING CENTRE please call on 03000 120175. Alternatively, visit the centre’s website at www.ferndown.cats.org.uk.

Teen Eye Happy April! With Eastertime now just past, I am still munching through the usual Easter chocolates and eggs. Emily This is definitely a necessity this year as I am in the middle of my A level revision and I need to keep my energy levels up! It is always easier to work when it is cold outside but as soon as we get some sunshine, it is harder to focus. It’s weird to think that these are my last exams to revise for at Twynham and I won’t have to go there daily like I have been in the last seven years! I’m looking forward to a long holiday abroad with friends at the end of July. It’s so nice to have something to look forward too while I’m revising and even better that it’s straight after my exams! I am also so excited to be able to spend time on Southbourne beach too over the summer. I especially like going to Bistro on the beach where it is normally quieter, it is a lovely spot for sunbathing or playing beach games! If you are out and about in Southbourne then why not pop into the Close Knit Yarn Café? There are some absolutely delicious cakes to try and an interesting selection of teas. I love all the knitted decorations that can be seen around the shop making it very individual. The decorations are also available for purchase. They also do lovely smoothies, made with completely fresh fruit as well as being hand made to order. Another lovely place to visit in Southbourne is the shop Sugar Mango. Based in the centre of the high street, it stocks beautiful jewellery which is perfect for a gift or just a present to treat yourself. They sell a variety of beautiful handmade gemstone jewellery inspired by nature, in the form of drop earrings, necklaces and bracelets. The option to have a custom piece made is also available to make pieces personal to you!
Crockpot Salsa Chicken INGREDIENTS 6 chicken breasts, boneless, skinless 1 jar mild salsa/fajita/enchilada sauce 1 cup grated cheese
METHOD
Preheat oven to 200 celsius/Gas Mark 6. Place whole chicken breasts in your crockpot and pour the salsa over it. Cook anywhere from 1½ to 2 hours, you don’t want to cook it longer because it will start falling apart. Take an 8 x 8 baking dish or 9 x 13, depending on how big your chicken breasts are, then carefully place the chicken in the dish. Spoon some of the leftover salsa (from the crockpot) over the chicken and sprinkle evenly with the cheese. Bake for a further 15 minutes or until it’s nice and golden brown, and you see the sauce and cheese bubbling.
Have a lovely month!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds!

If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely. HOW TO…
Plant a container-grown shrub Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.
